The Spanish pork sector is going through a moment of tense calm: the production figures are positive and, although the prices are not what we would wish for, it seems that everything is moving at a good pace. However, there is latent tension resulting from existing health threats that can destabilise the market. The declaration of an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) detected this summer in Belgium this summer has triggered all the alarms and brought the application of restrictive measures on imports. In addition, warnings have been reappeared about the catastrophic effects that the sector could suffer if ASF enters the country. On the other hand, and not least, the sector is aware of the great challenges facing the future in order to move towards increasingly sustainable production (such as reducing emissions of ammonia to the atmosphere) and more respectful with animals (such as elimination of surgical castration without anaesthesia or analgesia).

In the business world, we are a few weeks away from EuroTier 2018, in Hannover (Germany), the leading international fair for our sector. Once again, we will participate with a large stand (pavilion 17 - stand C04), where we will present our latest developments, some of which we have already advanced in this Rotecna World, such as the new TR3D fattening hopper, a model with three mouths and double-sided, an addition to the family of the successful TR2, and whose design allows pigs weighing between 20 and 120 kilos to eat quietly without bothering each other.

Finally, I am happy to announce the launch of the new Rotecna website. This is in line with digital trends, and is visual and very intuitive. Rotecna’s external installations section offers the customer a complete post-sale service for commissioning, advice and resolution of possible breakdowns in the more complex products, such as the feed distribution systems and electronic feeding systems we sell.

In the beginnings, Rotecna’s contact with the livestock farmer was much more direct, since the company was manufacturing and marketing directly to the final customer and installing the products on the farm.

Miró was born in Barcelona on April 20th 1893.

However, his emotional landscapes, those that would influence him as a person and artist, were mostly from Mont-roig, Paris and Majorca, and later New York and Japan. He grew up in a wealthy family, an introverted and frail child. Despite Miró’s artistic

talent of, his father tried to persuade him to be a priest or a soldier.

His father managed to enrol him in a trade school, although he simultaneously frequented ‘La Escuela de la Lonja’, a famous art academy where

the renowned painter Pablo Picasso had studied years before. When finalising his mercantile studies, it was contracted by a chemical company. He was soon fired for drawing sketches in the accounts books.

expansion, there has been a change in the system. Rotecna currently manufactures and sells the products to our distributors, who sell directly to the farmer and install these systems. In spite of this, the desire to maintain customer satisfaction and that they continue to rely on the Rotecna brand has led us to reinvent the assembly service as a technical service for the specific installation of those technologically more complex products, those that include electronics and computers. In these cases, it is Rotecna who continues to offer the livestock farmer start-up, advice and training and post-sales technical service.

Apart from the change of concept that the section has undergone in parallel with the growth of Rotecna, the digital evolution has enabled us to improve the service that the section offers the clients. Thus, Internet has become a basic tool that allows technicians to diagnose and solve problems 100% online, without having to travel to the farm. The systems developed by Rotecna are designed to be configured via Internet from anywhere in the world, provided that the exploitation has access to the network.

The day to day of the section The staff in the external installations section meet every Monday morning to list those tasks that can be programmed, such as start-ups, installation advice ... and place them on the map with the aim of optimising the routes to be done that week.

From there, the regular service of the section is combined with emergencies that may arise and which require immediate response.

The external installations section is one of the ones that works more autonomously, without depending directly on other departments.

However, it has very automated procedures, so that when you place the order for a spare part due to a breakdown, the shipments will quickly be despatched with your delivery note so that they can reach their destination as soon as possible. On the other hand, they do have a closer relationship with the Department of Quality to be able to communicate the needs and possible complaints from clients, and to give an immediate solution, and with the Sales Department, who inform about the sales to be able to organise and plan the setting up of the product with the customer.

In the midterm, the external installations section considers that the Dositronic (integral electronic feeding system) is their greatest challenge due to its complexity and the fact that the launch of the product has been a success for the possibilities and benefits that it brings to the farmer. That is why they expect a very busy future in advising about and installing this product.

Frank Reollo, in charge of external installations With a long experience as an electronic technician, Frank Reollo arrived in Rotecna on July 3, 2006 to join and direct the external installations team. His aim is always to solve the doubts and problems that customers can have effectively with those more complex products given their electronic configuration.

MIRÓ He studied at the School of Fine Arts and at the Gali Academy in his hometown. His first individual show was at the Dalmau Galleries (1918).

In his pre-1920 works, there are influences of Fauvism, Cubism and the Romanesque frescoes of Catalonia. During that year he travelled to Paris, where he befriended Pablo Picasso, met Tristan Tzara and Max Jacob and attended various Dadaist events.

Between 1921 and 1922 he painted ‘La Masia’, his most outstanding painting. In 1921 he had a solo exhibition in Galerie La Licorne. A year later, he is part of the Rue Blomet Group with André Masson, Antonin Artaud and others.

Miró started from the memory and irrational to create works that are visual transpositions of surrealist poetry such as ‘Catalan Peasant with Guitar’ (Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid), ‘The Harlequin’s Carnival’ (1925, Albright-Knox Gallery,

Buffalo) and ‘Dutch Interior’ (1928, Museum of Modern Art, New York).

Miró’s success lies in his ability to seduce the audience with the spontaneous perception of his language of wavy shapes and his irresistible chromatic appeal. His works are composed of plain backgrounds in neutral tones and painted in a narrow range of bright colours, especially blue, red, yellow, green and black. They have amorphous silhouettes alternated with accented lines, points, curls and feathers. Later, he produced more ethereal works in which the organic shapes and figures are reduced to dots, lines and explosions of colour.

Although identified with the republican cause, he returned to Spain in 1940 after the beginning of World War II. In addition, he experimented with other media, such as engravings and lithographs, to which he dedicated himself especially in the 1950s. He

also produced watercolours, pastels, collages, paintings on copper, sculptures, theatrical scenery and cartoons for tapestries However, the creations that had the greatest significance, along with his pictorial work, were his ceramic sculptures.

His mural for Hotel Terrace Plaza in Cincinnati was a turning point in his career and after that, his fame expanded and he received wide recognition. Among other works, he did the great ceramic murals Wall of the Moon and Wall of the Sun (19571959) for the UNESCO building in Paris and the mural of the Palace of Congresses and Exhibitions in Madrid.

The Miró Foundation of Barcelona was inaugurated in 1975.

It won prestigious international awards, such as the Guggenheim Prize, he was awarded doctor honoris causa by Harvard and appointed horseman of the Legion d’Honour in France. In addition, in 1980, he received the Spanish Gold Medal for Fine Arts from King Juan Carlos I.

He married Pilar Juncosa in Palma de Majorca on October 12th, 1929, and they moved to Paris. On July 17th, 1931, their only daughter, Dolors, was born. Joan Miró died on December 25th 1983 in Palma de Majorca.

THE DRY DOUBLE FEEDER WITH EASY ADJUSTMENT

Given the great success of the TR2, Rotecna expands its range of dry feeders for fattening with the TR3D. It is a new model, with three mouths and double face, designed to supply large animal pens.

The design of the V-shaped side mouths, so that the animals can be placed diagonally, allows them to eat placidly without bothering each other, thus avoiding fights and waste of feed. Thus, the TR3D, more than 1 metre high and with a capacity for 330 litres, can feed up to 66 animals.

In other similar hoppers, it is difficult for three large pigs to eat at the same time, which reduces their yield.

SOLID AND RESISTANT The TR3D is made entirely of plastic and stainless steel, thus converting it into a solid hopper resistant to the impact of animals and the corrosive agents on the farms, which provides greater durability.

On the other hand, the use of non-porous material like plastic improves the levels of hygiene and disinfection, thus reducing the water consumption and time that the farmer has to spend on these tasks, and guaranteeing better results, with the benefits that these bring from the point of view of vets’ visits and animal health.

ADJUSTMENT WITH ONE HAND EACH SIDE The TR3D maintains the main advantages of the successful TR2 and its easy-toadjust system with the “sandwich” skimmer, which allows you to regulate the feed drop with one hand, and makes a fast and precise point-by-point (transition 10 positions).

The “sandwich” system facilitates the handling of the hopper even full, since the skimmer is protected by two sheets between which it glides smoothly, without resistance from the food, since it is not in contact with it.

One of the main advantages of this hopper is that it allows the farmer to regulate each side of the TR3D independently, a very useful feature when working with pens with different sized pigs, different number of animals per pen or if you want one of the sides to fast.

“THE SPANISH AND EUROPEAN PIG SECTORS MOVE TOWARDS ALTERNATIVES TO SURGICAL CASTRATION” testicles, with which the pigs develop very small testes and do not produce enough testosterone for the flesh to have boar taint. The pig is given type of vaccine at least twice during its life.

In terms of animal welfare, what are the benefits of suppressing surgical castration?

The pig’s nervous system is fully mature at birth and, therefore, sensitive to pain. From here, it has been proven that castration without anaesthesia or analgesia is painful when done, but also in the days after castration, in addition to causing long-term problems of hypersensitivity in the pig, so that eliminating it implies avoiding the suffering to the animal. On the other hand, at a social level, this issue has attracted a lot of attention from consumers, who see surgical castration as an unacceptable practice from an ethical point of view.

Although 80% of the pigs in Spain are bred whole, surgical castration is a routine practice and very widespread in certain European countries, such as Germany, Denmark, France and Italy. It is a painful and stressful procedure for the animal, and causes long-term problems of hypersensitivity. Although eliminating this practice is not free of controversy, the pressures of the meat market and the willingness of the sector to move towards more ethical and sustainable production suggest its reduction in the near future. Déborah Temple, researcher at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the UAB on animal behaviour and welfare issues, analyses the current panorama of surgical castration in Europe with us and talks about the trend regarding this practice in the sector.

What is the surgical castration of pigs?

This has long been common practice in countries in the European Union, including in Spain. It is carried out with the aim of reducing boar taint, a musky sexual odour in the meat of male pigs. According to European legislation, surgical castration without anaesthesia or analgesia can be performed up until the animals are 7 days old. This practice is performed manually by the farmer or operator on the farm, by making an incision in the scrotum of the animal and extracts the spermatic cord.

What benefits justify surgical castration?

Mainly, as we have indicated, it avoids boar taint in meat in countries where pigs are slaughtered at a high weight, when the animal has already reached sexual maturity and, through testosterone, secretes a substance that remains in the flesh and generates an unpleasant smell. It is estimated that more than 30% of the population is sensitive to this. On the other hand, in intensive production systems, longterm castration prevents some animal welfare problems, such as fights between animals and mounting.

What is the current status of castration?

The figures vary according to country. However, according to a study conducted in 2015, it is estimated that in Europe, 65% of pigs are surgically castrated. At the opposite extreme, there are countries such as Spain, the United Kingdom and Ireland, where the percentage of surgical castration is very low, because they have chosen to raise whole pigs. Thus, in Spain more than 80% of pigs that are raised are whole, without castrating. In the United Kingdom, this figure is 98% and in Ireland, 100%.

Where is the European legislation in this area heading?

The current European legislation, which has been in force since 2008, states that surgical castration can be carried out without anaesthesia or analgesia until the animals are 7 days old. However, in 2010 a declaration was signed, which is not a regulation, in which the sector agreed to eliminate surgical castration and opt for less painful alternatives.

According to this statement, between 2012 and 2018 surgical castration should have been eliminated throughout Europe, but this has not been the case.

However, it is true that, at a state level, there are already countries where changes are taking place.

In this sense, in Holland the production of whole pigs has reached 70%. Immunocastration is used on 15% of pigs in Belgium. Next year, it will become mandatory to use anaesthesia in all surgical castrations in Germany. On the other hand, there is increasing pressure against surgical castration within the meat market, with large distribution chains who will shortly not accept surgically castrated pork.

What alternatives are proposed to surgical castration?

Currently there are two: the breeding of whole pigs and immunocastration. In the first case, the animals are reared without castrating them and, in the second case, a treatment that functions as a vaccine is used, inhibiting the function of the

Productively, what benefits does the farmer obtain from not surgically castrating?

The production of whole pigs has many advantages from the production point of view and for the quality of the meat. However, it is true that, in the long term, this type of production can generate other animal welfare problems, such as injuries resulting from fights between animals and mounting. That is why strategies are now being studied to be able to breed uncastrated male pigs and that this production is sustainable, both in terms of welfare problems and the boar taint of the meat. On the other hand, regarding the production of immunocastrated pigs, everything that has been studied and carried out to date shows that it is profitable, because the pig grows as a whole animal almost until the end of fattening. However, some markets are somewhat reluctant to promote the meat of these animals. However, it must be said that this product works very well and it has been shown that, evidently, there are no residues from this in the meat. I think will takes a bit longer to make the immunocastration better known, for example, here in Spain.

Economically, is it more expensive to produce whole or immunocastrated pigs than surgically castrated ones?

No, on the contrary. Raising a whole pig is cheaper than raising a castrated one, because it grows better, faster and its meat is of higher quality.

However, the problem is that you cannot avoid the boar taint in the meat at the end of the fattening and there are problems of mounting and injuries in the carcases due to fights, which can cause a slaughterhouse not to accept them. So, that is where we find ourselves with a problem and a financial cost.

What is the future of surgical castration?

I believe that, in the end, due more to market pressure than European legislation itself, the Spanish and European pig sectors will move towards the reduction of surgical castration without anaesthesia and analgesia, so those producers who want to keep up with the sector and the market will have to opt for one of the existing alternatives.

“WITH THE DOSITRONIC WE HAVE VERY GOOD FEED CONSUMPTION AND THE SOWS WEAN 15.7 PIGS OF 5.4 KG” In 2014, the Cooperativa d’Ivars invested in the reform and expansion of this farm of 2,000 sows in Valfarta (Huesca), where they installed the Rotecna Dositronic electronic feeding system in all their maternity places in 2017. After three complete production cycles, the farm has reached excellent production figures, with an average of 38 weaned piglets per sow per year. In this Rotecna World we speak to Orlando, the manager of the farm, to know how he works with the Dositronic.

How is the farm organised?

We have a 720-place insemination house, where we keep the sows for 40 to 45 days, and from there we pass them to confirmed gestation, where we work with self-capture cages, until between 107 and 109 days. Once this cycle is completed, we move the sows to farrowing. Specifically, we have 21 rooms with a total of 396 farrowing places, where they remain after birth for about 22 or 23 days of lactation, at which time we wean the piglets. We also have 4 weaning rooms, where we have wet nurses.

Finally, the farm has a 700-bed nursery that houses the farm’s future mothers, a quarantine area, a complete and comfortable area for workers, a warehouse, a workshop, a water treatment room and a boiler room, which works with biomass.

Who works on the farm and how are tasks distributed?

There are 7 people: a secretary who is responsible for the entire administrative part, 4 people in the farrowing room, two of them responsible for farrowing and the other two to control the feeding of animals and process piglets and, finally, two more in the area of insemination-pregnancy.

What Rotecna products are installed on the farm?

Dispensers, the Dositronic electronic feeding system, farrowing and weaning slats, heating plates, early age dishes, VRH-3 valves, fences, TR-5 and Grow Feeder hoppers, feed distribution systems, etcetera.

They are many. With regard to consumption, you can see at all times how much an animal has eaten, give more or less food depending on their needs, whether it is winter or summer, make sure you can eat at night, etc. We use the Dositronic in ad libitum mode, so once we have determined the curve for each sow, it can eat when it wants and the amount it wants in each ration. Now we have a very good consumption of feed, the sows wean 15.7 piglets weighing 5.4 kg of (annual average), and they leave for the next insemination in good condition. It is also very important to note that with the Dositronic there is no waste of feed, the feeders are always clean, which, in turn, reduces the workload of the staff, who do not have to spend time emptying the feeders. Finally, we must highlight the safety and tranquillity that the system gives us, as there is no need to be present on the farm to feed the sows.

How many feed curves do you work with?

Throughout my career as a farmer, I have always worked with Rotecna products. All their products offer very good results on the farm.

On day 0, which is when we enter the sows to farrowing before delivery, we programme the feeding curve to a maximum of three kilos. On the day of parturition, the sow can only eat 1 kilo if she wants, and, from the second day, she is given 3 kilos again. After that day, the daily ration is increased by 1 kilo per day up to a maximum consumption of 13 kilos at the end of weaning. The advantage of this system is that, if you see that a sow asking for more food, you can raise her ration, or lower it in the opposite case.

In farrowing you have opted to work with the new Dositronic integral electronic feeding system. Why?

In everyday working, how is the work organised to get the most out of the Dositronic?

For its advantages in the management of feeding in farrowing, since it helps us to increase the feed intake of the sows during lactation, with the benefits that this entails, and to take individualised control of the amount that each animal eats.

The first thing I do in the morning every day is to go around the sheds to quickly see what the feed consumption has been with the information provided by the coloured lights on the Dositronic.

Then I go to the computer and, in the programme, I check the sows that have not eaten in more detail, I write down where they are and then I go directly

to see what has happened. It is a job you do in 20 minutes. It is very fast. The truth is that with the Dositronic you save a lot of time.

Do you think that the panel of buttons is an advantage?

Yes. In the mornings, when I check the rooms, the LED lights on the Dositronic quickly provide me with a lot of information about the consumption of the sows, and the panel allows me to increase or reduce the feed level according to each one’s consumption. On the other hand, on the day of farrowing, we press the button on the panel that indicates the start of lactation, and on the day of weaning, we press the weaning button and turn off the system.

What use do they make of the dosipocket?

We use it a lot: to register the sows in the system when we enter them to farrowing, to record the movement of animals, to increase and reduce the level of feed for the sows if necessary, etc. The truth is that, in terms of handling, both dosipocket and the panel of buttons are very easy and intuitive systems to use, so they are of great help and very useful.

What does it mean to be able to have all the data on the sows’ consumption behaviour computerised?

It is a very useful tool that facilitates our everyday work on the farm. If a sow does not eat, it is very easy to locate with the programme and then we to see what has happened. In a conventional system, if you want to have this information, you have to go room by room and pen by pen and, in addition, you will never get as much data on the feeding of animals as that which the Dositronic can offer you.

With this electronic system, it is impossible for the animal to spend more than a day without eating, something that can happen with other systems.

At the level of productivity of sows and litter, have you noticed improvements?

Yes, definitely. Compared other systems I have worked with, there are many improvements, especially in the weight of the weaned piglets.

Normally, in farms with an average of 15.7 piglets like this, they reach about 5 kilos at weaning with other systems. Then, with the Dositronic, the sows wean piglets with an annual average of 5.4 kilos and in winter, they can weigh 5.8-5.9 kilos. This is one of the great advantages of the Dositronic, which is also thanks to the system stimulating the sows to eat. If a sow eats, the noise of the feed falling stimulates the other sows to get up to hit the sensor and claim your food ration. Finally, with the Dositronic, the welfare of the sows improves.

They adapt quickly to the system and appear calmer, with which we favour their productivity.

At the health level, what are your main concerns?

Maintain the sanity of the farm, so we perform a very careful management and do not let anyone into the farm enter the farm.

What biosecurity measures are adopted to reduce the risk of disease?

Entry of people from outside the farm is very restricted and, if a visit is scheduled, it can only come on Mondays, the same as the trucks. On the other hand, the internal staff shower both when entering and leaving the farm, and they know that once inside they cannot leave the premises during the working day. The management of the farm is inside and therefore the staff must also be there. In exceptional cases there are boots to go out in. As internal biosecurity measures, in addition to the

shower area, which differentiates the dirty area from the clean area very clearly, nobody can bring personal items onto the farm, there is a footbath at the entrance of each of the farrowing sheds, etc. In terms of biosecurity, we are very demanding and all personnel are aware of its importance.

Finally, what future challenges arise for exploitation?

At a productive level, my objectives are always high for this farm, since I like to improve myself and get ahead. In this sense, if we now have 38 weaned piglets per sow per year, I believe that, based on this figure and with the genetics that is coming, we could reach 40-42 piglets/sow/year. On the other hand, in the medium term, we plan to extend the farm to double the number of sows from 2,000 to 3,800 by the end of 2019.

The biggest Bolivian city, Santa Cruz, is the largest producer of pork, with 80% of total production.

The Bolivian pig sector increased by 16% in 2017 due to the movement of animals. This growth was accompanied by an increase of 10% in the number of breeding sows, with the consequent creation of new jobs in the sector. By system, large-scale production represents 25%, while 75% occurs at the small and medium scale. By areas, Santa Cruz, the most populated city in the country, is also the largest producer of pork, and supplies 80% of domestic consumption. Cochabamba is in second position, with 13%, and the rest is from the city of Sucre, the third largest producer in the country.

PRODUCTION Bolivian pig production dates back to the colonial era, when the production systems were family based and located next to the houses. Selfconsumption was the main form of production and

was essentially aimed at local markets. Pig farming began to be an economic activity in the 1980s. The main markets were Santa Cruz, Cochabamba and Sucre, which have remained at the top in terms of production to date. Last year, there was a crisis in the Bolivian food industry, and more specifically in pork, due to excess production. The surplus from the farms was 4 thousand tons compared to 2016 figures. Fortunately, the Bolivian government signed an agreement with Peru to create new markets.

However, at the end of last year the level of agricultural work began to decline, and this was blamed directly on the meat traders.

IMPORTS According to the data from the Bolivian Institute of Foreign Trade (IBCE), the amount of imported pork sausages in 2016 was 10,042 kilograms, 3,000 kilos

more than in 2015. In January 2017, imports of 3,904 kg were predicted.

MARKETING AND CONSUMPTION According to Adepor, Santa Cruz supplies 80% of the domestic demand for pork, and the people of Santa Cruz consume up to 8.2 kilos of pork per year.

In Bolivia, the pig industry generates around 225 million dollars per year from the direct sale of the animals. Every month, some 2,200 tons of pork are distributed, and these finally reach industry and the consumer.
