With a production of four million tons of pork in 2017, the Spanish pig sector represents more than 37% of final livestock production, is a leading sector in Europe and exports to more than 130 countries, thanks to the quality of the meat. These are three compelling reasons that push us to continue working to avoid sitting back and losing steam along the way.

In this context, as far as the business sector is concerned, at Rotecna we have started the year investing in expanding our production capacity and developing new products. 2018 will be a year of novelties, some of which have already been presented, such as the SiloMetric. Others we will be announcing throughout the year, like the hopper SF3D for fattening and wean-to-finish, and the shutter for fasting that we present in this Rotecna World. We will display all these developments, along with others still on the way, at EuroTier 2018, the leading international event in our sector to be held in November in Hannover (Germany).

SALES DEPARTMENT PROFILE: · Year of creation of the department: 1991 · Number of employees: 16 · Number of countries where Rotecna is present: 84 Although the sales department was born at the same time as the company, in 1991, it was formally constituted as such a couple of years later, when a sales team was created who shared out the domestic market with the aim of selling and implementing the Rotecna brand all over the country.

The global expansion of Rotecna began with our closest neighbors, but it soon spread to the international market and to being present in all those countries where an opportunity was found.

Currently, we are present in 84 countries.

Initially, the sales activity focused on the Spanish market, but it shortly became possible to set up the first links with an international client. This was in 1992, with the company Agroalcanede in Portugal, with whom we still have a very good business relationship.

TWO ELEMENTS OF CATALAN FESTIVAL IMAGERY

These are made of different materials, but mainly wood. Inside there is a structure designed to hide the person who carries the giant, and who makes it parade and dance through the streets.

On the other hand, there is the figure of the gegantet (little giant), one not much higher than an adult, designed to be carried by children.

The gegants (giants) and capgrossos (big heads) are figures in Catalan festive imagery, folkloric elements that take part in popular celebrations, mainly in local festivals and in specific gatherings for this type of that take place throughout the territory.

The giants

The capgrossos, as the name suggests, are typified by disproportionately large heads, giving a comic effect. This structure is placed on the wearer’s shoulders and gives the appearance of a strange character, with an excessively large head. In addition, these do not depict kings or nobles, but rather clowns, soldiers, witches and other types of characters. Currently, the recent tendency is for a capgròs to be used as a homage to local characters.

History The gegants are large figures that mainly represent kings, nobles and other traditional characters dressed in the typical clothes of the time they refer to.

In Catalonia, the tradition of the giants is documented since 1424 in Barcelona,

Currently, the department has a staff of 16, between domestic and international sales people and those in the back office (administrative part).

The trust of the client The main function of the Sales Department is to establish a link between the company and customers, working to build their trust and establish a solid relationship, one that goes beyond simply selling products.

This confidence, however, is a work of years, the result of the day-to-day work of the sales staff, most of whom have been in Rotecna for more than 10 years. In addition, this trajectory allows them to offer good service and advice to the clients, contributing their experience and knowledge of the pig sector.

From the final customers to distributors Given the evolution of the markets, between 2007-2008, it was decided in Rotecna to move towards a more exponential growth of the company,

and to stop working directly with the end users (the farmers) and instead to do it through distributors all over the world, companies that buy our products and then sell them on and give service to their customers.

Another section of the department that has also been growing in parallel to the company has been the staff in the back office, those that work from the Rotecna facilities.

Enamored with his work, his years of experience have given him insight into the sector, the company and its clients, knowledge that helps him to manage and coordinate a department that is key in any company.

In the second half of the 20th century, with the arrival of democracy, many people rediscovered elements of local and festive identity in the giants, and they become an important phenomenon. In addition, new builders appeared, lost figures were recovered and new ones created in places with no previous tradition.

The town of Agramunt (Lleida) also has a long tradition of giants and big heads. Thus, the giants of Agramunt, known as the King and Queen, date back to 1957.

On the other hand, legally constituted giants’ associations grew up and in many cases, these act as promoters of the associative and cultural life of towns and cities.

In 1984, the Agrupació de Colles Geganteres de Catalonia (Catalan Association of Giants Groups) was created and, since 1985, every year, a

The design and construction of these, however, are not exclusive to Agramunt, since they are based on a commercial mould and so it is easy to find similar ones all over Catalonia, although the clothes and colors differ. As their name indicates, they represent a king and a queen and are dressed as such. Since 1991, they have their own dance with its choreography.

The same year (1957) as the giants, six big heads were bought. Made of papier maché, they were also based on a commercial mould. These represent a soldier, a witch, a farmer, a Mexican, a clown and a mayor.

Later, in 2007, the Pom d’Or giant was built, which also has its own dance.

are a homage to popular people of the town, were elaborated.

Thus, the caparrons have a brief explanation about the person they represent, and, in addition, there is a dance of Agramunt’s new festive imagery, which depicts the family of each caparró.

SF3D Fattening

Having a feeding system capable of supplying a large number of pigs per pen is an ongoing need in markets with growing swine production

Feeding represents about 70% of production costs. Therefore, it is very important to optimise its management with feeding systems capable of facilitating precise and efficient handling that, at the same time, allow animals to eat placidly without wasting feed.

To this end, Rotecna has developed the new SF3D hopper (from the English “Shelf Feeder”). This hopper is capable of supplying a large number of pigs per pen, and is flexible and very versatile, due to the range of possibilities it offers for feeding.

Two models 1. SF3D Fattening: Dry and wet food.

2. SF3D Wean-to-finish: Dry and wet food, and very precise tray regulation system (internal telescope) to facilitate access for smaller piglets. (*) SF3D with VRH-3 valve: The VRH-3 valve can be install with all of SF3D models. The VRH-3 valve installs in one of the dishes to obtain a constant water level, and use the other two for dry or wet feed.

Common features • Animals may choose to eat dry directly from the upper tray or with feed mixed with water on the bottom plate.

• Possibility of changing the height of the feed tray to facilitate access for animals of different ages and sizes.

• Double-sided hopper with three independent 38-cm mouths on each side, which can each feed from 13 to 15 pigs.

• Large feed storage capacity: 175 kg of granulated feed and 140 kg of feedmeal.

• Telescopic system for the feeding tray. This allows smaller piglets to reach the feed and makes this hopper suitable for wean to finish.

SHUTTER,

TOTAL CLOSURE OF HOPPERS FOR FASTING Fasting before slaughter is a common and fundamental practice in pig production to obtain a good yield from the carcass, reduce the stress on the animals during transport and increase the financial yield per pig.

Restricting the animals’ access to feed (but not water) before slaughter reduces mortality and prevents them from suffering nausea and vomiting during transport to the slaughterhouse. Another benefit of fasting for pigs is the improvement in food safety, as it prevents the increase and spread of bacterial contamination, and facilitates gutting.

Shutter for fasting In order to facilitate the handling of fasting on farms, Rotecna has designed a shutter that is perfectly adapted to the Grow Feeder Maxi fattening hopper.

Very easy to install, the shutter is located in the hopper’s feed drop mechanism, blocking it completely and preventing the fall of feed even when the animal hits the hopper hard, regardless of the granulometry.

Quickly and without the need to empty the hoppers, the shutter enables fasting only in the pens of the animals that have to be prepared for slaughter, thus avoiding stressing the rest of the pigs in the same shed. It is also a useful accessory in cases where the animals in a pen have to fast to treat digestive pathologies.

65.7% of the Guatemalan pig sector is concentrated in technified farms. The rest (34.3%) is on family or backyard farms.

Swine production has consolidated its position as the second largest livestock sector in Guatemala behind poultry. Since the country declared itself free of classical swine fever (CSF) in August 2016, the situation of the sector has improved, as it has been able to restart exports of live pigs, products and by-products, mainly to its Central American neighbours. Indeed, the main challenge of the sector is to maintain the health status and earn recognition as free of PPC from the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

PRODUCTION The Guatemalan pig sector has a census of 1,555,595 pigs, 65.7% of which are concentrated on technified farms. In recent years, producers have invested in improving their farms genetically and technologically to produce better and more competitively, with Guatemala being the most technically advanced pigraising country in Central America. The rest of the sector, 34.3%, is still concentrated on family or backyard farms (Graph 1). In 2016, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Panama accounted for approximately 83% of regional pork production, while the remaining 17% was produced in Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador.

Given the low consumption of pork in Guatemala, the sector is trying to increase a figure that is far below the annual per capita figure for chicken meat of 16 kilos. Thus, producers are working to encourage pork consumption, which, they say, stands out for its quality and low price, as well as ensuring rigorous health and hygiene checks throughout the production process.

IMPORTS AND EXPORTS The volume of pork imports into Guatemala exceeds its exports. Thus, according to data from the Association of Pig Farmers of Guatemala (APOGUA), between 2012 and 2016, the country imported a total of 65,398 tons of pork, including sausages, pig skin, processed meats and gelatin. This amounts to around 12,00014,000 tons annually, a figure that has remained stable in recent years. The main exporters of meat to Guatemala are the United States, Mexico, Spain, El Salvador and Canada. Regarding exports, between 2012 and 2016 the country exported 40,750 tons of pork, including sausages, pork skin, pork rinds and entrails. The main destinations for Guatemalan pork products are Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Hong Kong.

In Central America as a whole, of the 249 thousand tons of meat consumed in 2016, 73% corresponded to local production, while the remaining 27% was imported, mostly from the United States and other countries outside the region.

CHALLENGES FOR THE FUTURE CONSUMPTION Currently, the main challenge for the pig sector in Guatemala is to maintain the country’s status as free of classical swine fever without vaccination and achieve recognition from the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). In this sense, given the remaining restrictions, the pig sector is working with the private sector to open exports to Asian and European markets.

Despite the country’s productive capacity, consumption of pork in Guatemala is among the lowest in Central America, with an average of 3.7 kilos per capita, a figure well below that of such nearby countries as Costa Rica (14.4 kilos) or Panama (12.4 kilos) (Graph 2).
