waste. Thus, as we did in the last Rotecna World where we presented the TP-01 Solid Separator, in this edition we present the slurry Agitator.

So, 2017 will see the launch of this new line of products, and we hope that it will be well received by the sector. So far, the reactions to the TP-01 Solid Separator perceived in EuroTier 2016 (Germany) and FIGAN 20107 (Spain) have been excellent. On the other hand, we can also be proud of having won an award in the technological novelties competition at FIGAN 2017 in the category of ‘Technological Advance’, the same category where we were awarded a prize for the new Dositronic electronic dispenser, our bid to automate and individualise the feeding of sows in farrowing and gestation.

From moulds of 6,000 kilos to moulds of up to 25 tonnes

have to meet. Then, the most adequate supplier is selected and the building process begins. This can take up to 6 or 8 weeks (approximate time, depending on the dimensions and complexity of each mould). After this time, and once the new mould arrives in Rotecna, the Die Department verifies that everything is in order and requests the Quality Department to do an test injection, at which all the departments involved in the production are present to validate the good working of the mould.

With the incorporation three years ago of new injection machines to produce large-scale pieces, the range of moulds in Rotecna has changed, and has gone from working with 6,000-kilo moulds to doing so with moulds that reach 25 tonnes.

While the mould for the mould for the 60x60 was the most used for many years, in recent years, the success of the new family of separator panels for pens has taken its place, and the mould for the panels is now the one with the largest production.

The process of making a mould begins in the Technical Office, which is in charge of designing new products, and with whom the die maker meets to define and agree the characteristics the new mould will

the moulds, but, over time, it has specialised with the aim of modifying existing moulds ‘in situ’, so that the same mould could be used to make different pieces, as well as taking on the making of small-scale moulds.

Over the last 10 years, Rotecna has doubled the number of moulds for making new products.

Between the Technical Department and Injection, we find the Die Section, in charge of managing all the moulds for Rotecna. These are the basis for the production of a wide range of the brand’s products.

Since its creation in 1994, together with the Injection Section, the Die

Department has grown in parallel to the company’s expansion, extending its range in function of the market need and tendencies, with ever more complex products. Thus, over the last 10 years, Rotecna has doubled its stock of moulds to 319 in 2017. To start with, this section was only concerned with the maintenance of

Given the challenge of managing a large number of ever-bigger moulds, the Die Section has implemented

The strategic position of the hill, a high point, well communicated and close to the Segre River, has meant it has been important from ancient times down to the modern epoch, passing through the Iber Iltirta, the Roman Ilerda and the Muslim Larida. In a more recent historical period, civil war and European wide conflicts left only the Cathedral and the Castle standing, and these were used as barracks until 1948. That is when its recovery began with the restoration, which is still ongoing.

The hill (turó) of the Seu Vella is visible from anywhere in the city of Lleida. Right in the middle of the city, it is home to a series of sites full of history, namely the Cathedral of the Seu Vella, the Castle of the King /La Suda, the fortification that surrounds the hill and various archaeological remains.

This is the most prominent building on the hill that bears its name, and is old cathedral of Lleida. Considered one of finest examples of thirteenth-century Catalan architecture, as well as the church by Pere de Coma with its Latin cross basilica floor plan with five apses, the cathedral includes notable sculptural elements in its capitals, cornices and doorways.

Moreover, it conserves the remains of mural paintings and chapels built by illustrious dynasties and outstanding members of the church.

SECTION new working protocols to make it more efficient.

The purpose of the section is to guarantee that all the moulds are always in perfect conditions to produce. With this aim, two years ago, all the tasks in the section were computerised to provide a daily register of all the actions carried out and control the activity with the moulds. On the other hand, the amount of preventive maintenance of the moulds has increased to control the number of injections and reduce breakdowns.

Finally, to ensure that the moulds made outside the company (the majority) arrive in the best conditions, a list of requirements has been created with all the conditions that the suppliers have to meet in the manufacturing process, and this has enabled a reduction in the time required to set up the new moulds. Moreover, a year ago, the Die section began external assessment from two professionals, a moulder and an expert in injection.

The section To be able to accept an increasingly large workload, the Die Section has a staff of five who distribute the daily work, with priority given to the production requirements of the Injection Section. So, after ensuring that the production work will not be held up by a mould, the other tasks are distributed:

repair, modification and adaptation of moulds, and preventive maintenance of the stock.

For the future, managing a growing number of large-scale moulds and having enough space to work with these are seen as the main challenges of Rotecna’s Die Section.

Eloi Martí, in charge of the Die Section Trained as a mechanisation technician, Eloi Martí has been working for Rotecna for 11 years.

Previously, he was working as a locksmith.

Thus, although he was in the metalworking sector, the possibility of specialising in the world of moulds made him decide to move to Rotecna’s Die Section in October 2006.

“I remember that the precision with which one works and the sector requires has fascinated me from the start, and was one of the things that encouraged me to stay and form part of the team at Rotecna”, Eloi explains.

VELLA IN LLEIDA Among the most important elements of the Cathedral of the Seu Vella, is the bell tower, over 60 metres high, and that can be climbed up a spiral staircase with 238 steps, and the enormous cloister, considered one of the greatest in European Gothic architecture. Moreover, this cloister stands out for its 17 large windows, five of which offer magnificent views over the city, and the varied repertoire of the capitals.

The King’s Castle (Castell del Rei) On the highest part of the hill, the Castell del Rei also known as La Suda, and Arab term that means a closed urban area.

The name would refer to the Andalusian fortress built in the ninth century on the site nowadays occupied by the castle, but it is also the name that medieval sources designated for the noble neighbourhood that stretched across the hill.

This castle was the palace where the monarch resided when in Lleida. It was built over different stages between the end of the twelfth and the fifteenth century, which is why it is a mix of Romanesque and Gothic forms. Moreover, it was also the scene of important historical events.

Fortification Finally, mention must be made of the fortification that surrounds all the hill of the Seu Vella with defensive bulwarks, stretches of wall, walkways, tunnels, etc., all of which are the result of different works carried out in the context of the wars in the modern and contemporary epochs.

Despite this, the earlier Roman city of Ilerda, the Moorish Larida and medieval Lleida had all fortified the hill, the walls of which were partly destroyed in the second half of the fifteenth century during the civil war against John II. Thus, the defences

had to be rebuilt, especially during the modern epoch.

Candidature for UNESCO World Heritage Nowadays, one of the challenges for the Board that manages the Turó of the Seu Vella in Lleida is to have it declared a World Heritage site by

the Unesco. To this end, between 2007 and 2013 over 13,000 signatures were collected, and in 2015, the Spanish Ministry of Culture included it on the list of Spanish monuments that opted to be declared World Heritage sites.

Nowadays, the hill and its buildings are listed as a site of National Cultural Interest.

Some of the main challenges for the pig sector in the future are food safety, the reduction of environmental impact, biosecurity and adaptation to the animal welfare legislation. The production of healthy pig meat is acquiring greater importance.

The safety and quality of the feed are the keystones to the increasingly integrated food chain. Protecting the animals’ health is thus one of the key elements that the farmers have to face.

One aspect that contributes to improving the health of the animals and reducing the environmental impact is the materials used inside the farms. This comparative study showed how the polypropylene panels reduces the consumption of cleaning water, and thus the production of slurry, by 46.5 % in comparison with concrete panels. They require 21.5 % less time for cleaning and, most importantly, they have a much lower residual microbiological load when they have been cleaned and disinfected.

The antecedents in the cleaning and disinfection of fattening sheds are not particularly good. This was an aspect that tended to be neglected. However, nowadays, farmers have a clear idea that this is a primordial aspect for maintaining a good health status on their farms, aware that the buildings and sheds can themselves be the cause of some reiterative diseases and that, in the long term, can generate a constant fall in the health and performance of the animals.

The so-called sick buildings constantly expose the animals to pathogens and toxins that provoke the secretion of cytokines from their immune system. It

has been shown that some of the main cytokines secreted have important growth inhibiting properties. That is why it is essential to maintain high levels of hygiene in the installations if one wishes to avoid diseases that impede the optimum growth of the fattening pigs.

So, as well as practicing good cleaning and disinfection of the installations, it is necessary to obtain information about the properties of the materials used inside the farms, as these have different qualities and, in consequence, provide different results for the efficacy of cleaning and disinfection. With this aim in mind, the properties of concrete and polypropylene surfaces were compared. This enabled us to obtain very relevant information to achieve a higher level of cleaning and disinfection and, thus, a better health status.

MATERIAL AND METHODS The comparison between the polypropylene and concrete panels was done in 12 sheds (60x14 m) with 1000 pigs – 6 concrete and 6 polypropylene – with the same characteristics, and where the dimensions of the building, pens and corridor were checked, as was the type of compact floor/slat.

• Cleaning costs: To evaluate the costs of cleaning, the time required for this was measured. The price per hour was calculated from the average hourly rate of the cleaning companies.

• Water consumption: This consumption was calculated from the meters installed on the

farms and, where there were none, calculating the litres/minute of water for the cleaning lances. In the latter case, 80 % of the time from the start of cleaning was counted to account for the moments when these were stopped.

• Electricity consumption: Energy cost was calculated from the consumption of the water pumps with the current tariff per kW. • Transport costs: Regarding transport, the price per kilometre can vary the final cost of transporting the slurry. Two different distances were calculated to obtain criteria for short and long routes (Table 1 - Information supplied by Gestió Agro-Ramadera de Ponent (GAP)).

Quality of the hygiene The samples for analysing the total aerobic microorganisms and enterobacteriaceae were obtained with disposable sterilised swabs supplied

by Laboratorio Convet S.L. (Consultoría y Asesoría de Sistemas de Gestión y Seguridad Alimentaria).

After cleaning and disinfection, the farm was left for at least a day to dry out, and then an area was marked for sampling. This was located at a point on the pen separator panels where the animals have direct access. The surface analysed was 1 m² and, to acquire the samples, all the surface was rubbed vigorously with the swabs. They were then stored in

a portable fridge at low temperature and transported immediately to the laboratory.

• Average of fattening (2.3 cycles/year) in farms for pigs of 18 kg to the slaughterhouse.

Given that there are two variables that can influence the final results directly, samples were taken on different farms to obtain samples with a range of conditions of temperature and humidity.

• The labour cost was calculated from the average hourly rate invoiced by cleaning companies.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The results obtained on the farms where the cleaning tests were carried out (Tables 2 and 3) show that, in the sheds with concrete separators, average water consumption was 35.7 m³ to clean a farm with 1,000 pigs. In contrast, the farms with polypropylene separators consumed 19.1 m³ of water, in other words, 16.6 m³ less than for concrete panels, a 46.5% saving of water for the farms with polypropylene panels.

Regarding the time spent on cleaning, the average with concrete panels was 19.9 hours, and 15.7 hours with polypropylene panels. This means 4.2 fewer hours on farms with polypropylene panels, a 21% reduction in cleaning time. Bear in mind that on the farms with concrete, all the elements to be cleaned were previously soaked. In contrast, on those with polypropylene, the panels were cleaned directly without any kind of soaking.

The annual savings in labour, cleaning water, slurry transport and energy consumption (Table 3) were calculated in the following way:

• The cost of removing slurry was obtained from the information supplied by Gestió AgroRamadera de Ponent (GAP).

• The prices of water and electricity were calculated from the current applicable tariffs.

The results obtained in the trial show that polypropylene panels mean annual savings of 327.28 euro compared with concrete ones (Table 4).

To analyse the efficiency of the disinfection of the polypropylene and concrete panels, a test was carried out by the Laboratorio Convet S.L. Graph 1 shows that the initial load regarding the Enterobacteriaceae count was 56 % lower on the polypropylene surfaces than on concrete surfaces, and on the former, the efficiency of the disinfectant agent was 49 % higher.

The conclusion from these is that the polypropylene surfaces have a lower residual microbiological load and a significantly higher efficiency in disinfection treatments than the concrete surfaces.

costs and water and electricity consumption, their use contributes to reducing the production and transport of slurry and the resulting environmental impact. However, as shown by the results, where they offer a greater advantage is in animal health and welfare, given the efficiency of the disinfection of the polypropylene surfaces. Given a scenario where the reduction of antibiotics and food safety are, and will be, essential requirements for the sustainable production of pig meat, preventing disease in the animals is fundamental to the requirement to obtain safe food for consumers.

After analysing all the factors involved in the evaluation of concrete and polypropylene surfaces, we can conclude that polypropylene separator panels have been shown to be a very effective tool in disease prevention.

The financial losses that can derive from a deficient health status can be difficult to count or quantify, but farmers know very well that to reduce production losses, poor health is the main enemy to combat, as it is for the possible implications that certain diseases can have for the export trade.

Given this scenario, Rotecna’s range of slats, the widest on the market, continues to grow with the aim of supplying farmers with a wide choice of possibilities when constructing their rooms. With the largest pig herd in south-east Asia, Vietnam is working to transform its productive fabric, be more competitive and have capacity to export.

Vietnam is the third country in the world by per-capita pig meat consumption, with an average of 29.14 kilos in 2015. However, although it has the largest number of pigs in south-east Asia and the third largest in the world, its production is unable to cover 100% of the internal demand, which forces it to import some products, especially frozen pork and edible offal.

In figures, in 2015 there were 27.752 million head of pig in Vietnam, and 74% of the country’s meat production was pork, followed distantly by chicken at 18%. Between 2001 and 2006, there was the greatest growth in the pig population in Vietnam, which went from 21.76 to 26.85 million. Since then, the growth has been stable until 27.752 million head, according to the data from the Vietnamese government’s General Statistics Office and collected

by ICEX España.

PRODUCTION CONSUMPTION Vietnamese pig production meets 80% of domestic consumption, the rest is covered by the import of products, mainly from China. Although local pig production is important, and places Vietnam in third place in the world by herd size, health is one of the main problems in its production, as there are few guarantees that the meat is disease free and of high quality. It must be taken into account that 70% of producers are small farmers with farms fewer than 50 pigs each, few hygiene measures and where the feed of the pigs is not controlled. All these elements mean that there is scant traceability and the productivity figures did not exceed 10 live piglets per sow and litter. Given this scenario and with the aim of making the sector more competitive, the Vietnamese government promotes the establishment of large companies. So, the country’s productive fabric is moving cambiando towards a model of industrial farms, but there is still a long way to go. The large farms, with over 1,200 sows, currently make up only 8% of the total. These farms have developed technological systems and high standards of hygiene, as well as producing their own feed and genetics.

Pork is the most widely consumed meat among the Vietnamese, and the main ingredient of many dishes.

Since 2010, pork consumption has increased considerably, up to 29.14 kilos per capita in 2015, according to OECD data. In the coming years, the consumption of pig meat is forecast to continue this positive tendency, thanks to such factors as rising incomes, population growth and increasing urbanisation. Regarding other meats, pork represents 56% of national meat consumption, followed by chicken (27%), beef (16.7%) and lamb (0.21 %).

On the other hand, most Vietnamese prefer fresh meat, mainly sold in traditional markets, and which they tend to buy in the morning to ensure its freshness, as there is a growing concern with food safety.

In this sense, the younger generations are beginning to concentrate their shopping in the weekends and the supermarkets, which meat higher health standards than those found in traditional markets.

Moreover, the consumers are increasingly exposed to western products, which are perceived to be of

higher quality due to the stricter health checks they have to pass through, which means the Vietnamese with enough purchasing power prefer to acquire imported meat, as they consider it to be better quality.

IMPORTS Given that local production does not cover 100% of domestic demand for pig meat, the market resorts to imports, which have grown continuously for the last 5 years. Increasing awareness among the population, especially in large cities, regarding food hygiene and traceability induce the consumer who can afford it to opt for meat imported from the West. This reality suggests that the tendency in imports will continue upwards over the coming years.

Edible offal, to a value of $300.6 million, and frozen pork, to a value of $108.8 million, are the products most imported by Vietnam. By origin, China is the principal supplier of pig meat (80%) and, far behind, in second place is Spain, with 2% of the total imports. In 2015, Spain exported almost $8 million in meat products derived from pigs to Vietnam.

FUTURE CHALLENGES Given the perspectives of increasing domestic consumption and the low competitiveness of the Vietnamese pork sector, the government has developed a plan for 2020 designed to increase production to cover 100% of domestic demand and increase exports. To achieve this, the principal challenges the sector must face in Vietnam are: move towards a more industrial production to improve the productivity figures, reduce dependence on the imports of feed for the livestock and combat the problems of biosecurity and animal health to guarantee the traceability of its products.
