Quality and strict requirements have been the two main axes of the assembly section at Rotecna, which nowadays is made up of a staff of 12 whose ongoing task is to improve our products, to make them faster and better.

After moving due to the demands of growth, the section has adapted to the times and has undergone a progressive evolution over these 25 years. In the beginnings, there were no plans and the workers had to use their skill to assemble the products. Nowadays, they have plans, break down drawings, assembly instructions and a quality department to help and assess them. The sum of all these elements had contributed to improving the way of production, making the workstations more adequate and the tools more accessible. Thus from the experience of our workers, all the production process has been improved.

SOMETHINGABOUT...

THE PATUM, THE

To organise the workflow, the assembly section receives production orders generated by the purchase orders from the sales department.

An IT programme manages these and decides the quantity of a product that has to be produced and the time that should be dedicated to this. Based on this, the person in charge of the section has to prepare the assembly lines, bearing in mind the capacity of each operator, as some are more skilled at one thing than another, although the aim is to have workers who are flexible and able to carry out any part of the assembly process. In this sense, each product has a production time that depends on its components and the difficulty involved. While the process is underway, all the times are set, although working with people and no machines, a certain tolerance is necessary.

Once the line is set up, the workers place the components that arrive from the store at the place and in the order established, and then all that is required is to follow the instructions.

Because we don’t have a stable production and work to meet the market demands, the assembly lines are set up depending on the production run, in other words, the longer the production run, the more time the line remains set up.

THE PATUM The origins

FESTIVAL PAR

We have to go far back in time to find the origins of the festival, specifically to 1264 with the start of the festivities of Corpus and the groups that participated in the procession. Derived from pagan roots, the groups were Christianised, although with the passing of time its instructive character diminished and the entertainment side gradually came to the fore, which led to a civil and secular celebration called Bulla, a prelude to the current Patum.

EXCELLENCE OF BERGA AND CENTRAL CATALONIA

The Patum is unique, the essence of a town that fully identifies itself with it, the festival of the senses and sentiments. In 2001, the UNESCO declared it a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

The Plens is the greatest spectacle of the Patum, the climax of the party.

The Patum of Berga is not only a festival, it is also a feeling; it can be felt all year and is lived by both day and night. It is one of the most popular festivals in Catalonia and coincides with Corpus Christi. It is probably one of the most impressive theatrical displays you can see. For five days, the groups, the parades and the most singular characters, including demons, giants, dwarves, etc. combine with fire in the town of Berga whose population increases by up to sixfold.

A festival with its own language The Patum is made up of a set of elements that give it its special character. The square of Sant Pere becomes the nerve centre for the festival and the characters take over the space.

RELIEF ON PRICES

The hopers tend to be the products that take longest to assemble, reaching up to 45 minutes for some models. They are also the product with the highest demand and there is usually a permanent assembly line given that 60% of the company’s turnover is from these products.

Accepting the everyday challenge of being more efficient, the professionals in the assembly section in Rotecna work to supply our clients with quality products, adapting to the reality of the company and its growth.

The prices of pork in the European Union have been worrying the pork producers for a long time now. Especially since Russia closed its market in 2014, European producers have suffered from the surplus production with its special effects on prices.

However, a recent report by the British Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) indicates that finally some relief is coming to pork prices in Europe. In the last week of May, the price reached €140.76/100 kg, the highest since October 2015.

Chinese demand has a lot to do with this bonanza, given that exports to this country from the leading producing countries is at record levels, just as indicated by a report by the European Commission on pork exports during the first quarter of 2016. This report stated that exports to Chine increased by 77% between January and March 2016.

Jacint Faura, head of the assembly section Jacint Faura began his career in Rotecna in 1998. During this time, he has organized all the Rotecna assembly lines that produce 80 models of products.

Moreover, AHDB says that the rise in Chinese demand has also helped to absorb the additional meat on the market coming from the freeing of meat stored in private storage that the European Union authorised in January to reduce the pressure in the market.

On the other hand, another report by the same agency indicates that the levels of production in the

European Union have begun to stabilise. In line with provisional data from the European Commission, production fell by 1% in March to 1.02 million tonnes.

The drop in production is a sign of the slowing in growth and backs up the predictions about an adjustment of production throughout 2016.

Furthermore, they are indicative that the reduction in the size of national herds that were registered in December in the leading producing countries is beginning to filter through to the supply.

Some producers, like Holland and Spain, registered an increase in production in March compared with the same period in 2015. However, drops in production were observed in other leading producers, like Germany.

OF BERGA • The Tabaler is one of the main characters of the festival and has been documented since 1626. This is the only element of the Patum that participates in all the acts of the festival. He is always there and, to an extent, could be said to preside over and direct it. The Tabaler is the crier of the festival, the sound of his drum, pah-tum, is what has given the festival its name since the end of the 18th century.

• The Turks and the Cavallets (papier-mâché horses) depict four Turkish horsemen and four Christian knights. After parading together at the start of the dance, the two sides stage a battle that ends, after five charges, with the victory of the Cavallets. The earliest known reference to the Turks and Cavallets in the Patum dates from 1828.

• The Maces (demons wielding maces and whips) interpret the struggle between good and evil. There are four tools made up of a wooden stick over two metres long that ends in a circular wooden box with the two sides covered in leather.

• The Guites (dragons) are elements of popular bestiary. There is the figure of a dragon with a giraffe’s neck and that spites fire from its mouth. Two Guites perform in the Patum, the Grossa (Big) and the Xica (Little) (or Boja (Mad)), that chase the people with three burning torches in their mouths.

• The Àliga (eagle) is the star of one of the most long-expected moments of the night with its dance. It symbolises power, dignity, peace and justice, which is why when it appears in the square, there is a deep silence.

It dates from 1756 and is the oldest eagle in Catalonia.

• The Nans Vells (Old Dwarves) are four big-heads that have been taking part in the Patum since 1881, although not long after, they were replaced by the Nans Nous (New Dwarves).

Nowadays, both groups take part in the jumps in the Patum.

• The Plens is the greatest spectacle of the Patum. They represent demons and carry fireworks on top of their heads. Their name derives from the fact that they are plens (full) of fire.

The Guites chase the people with three burning torches in their mouths.

This is the culminating moment of the Patum, the apotheosis of the festival.

When the lights go off and the square is plunged into darkness, hundreds of fireworks start to burn and convert the space into an authentic ball of fire.

The barreja For the Patum, it is traditional to drink the famous and popular barreja, a mixture of three parts of muscatel and one of anis. This used to drunk by the peasants when they started work early in the morning and needed to warm themselves up.

It’s also for children Although fire is always there, the Patum is also for children. In fact, since 1956, there has been as festival

exclusively for them. On the Friday, there is the children’s Patum, a festival with the same elements as the adult one but smaller in size. In the morning, a parade announces the start of the activities and from then on, the day goes by with all the traditions, groups, dances and fireworks, but with safety measures adequate for the children.

150th anniversary of the giants 2016 is the 150th anniversary of the old giants of the Patum and the 125th of the new giants. To celebrate this, Bruce Springsteen has given the rights to the song “If I should fall behind” that the giants danced to in one of the jumps of the Patum in the Sant Pere Square.

NEW DROP KIT, FOR AUTOMATIC FEED SYSTEMS With 25 years of experience in the development and manufacture of products for the pig-farming sector, in their eagerness for continuous improvement, Rotecna incorporates a new drop kit into its automatic distribution systems with different input and output diameters that perfect its characteristics for the best performance.

Made in high-quality polypropylene, the new drop kit is highly resistant, which makes it very durable. It is simple and fast to install, with the need for screw fixings. Fastening with zip-ties is perfect to hold it firmly to the distribution pipe.

Wide mouth A big advantage of the product is the wide mouth that facilitates the movement of the flour to the drop tube.

With its rigid slide, we achieve a fully closed transport channel, without feed loss, as well easy access and quick handling from the ground for the farmer.

Models The product is available in six models, catalogued according to the size of the transport tube (inlet) and drop tube (outlet).

The drop kit is a fundamental piece of any automatic feed system. It is the element that links the circuit that distributes the feed (granulated or flour) throughout the room and the feed drop to the feeder.

That is why, Rotecna’s need drop kit has been designed to avoid any obstacles or obstructions to optimise the feed drop, whether it is granulated or flour, as well as to be easy to open and close.

US: THE US

PORK INDUSTRY, POWERHOUSE OF THE COUNTRY’S FARMING ECONOMY The United States is the world’s second port exporter and third producer.

Source: National Pork Producers Council / U.S. Department of Agriculture The United States pork industry is a significant part of the country’s agricultural economy and, to a great extent, contributes to its development. Attentive to improvements in bio-safety, a changing market and the needs of the market, more than 68,000 US producers traded around 112 million pigs in 2014, which generated total revenues of 23.4 billion dollars. These figures make the US the third largest producer of pork in the world.

Production According to data from the Department of Agriculture (USDA), on 1st March 2016, there were 67.6 million pigs in American herds, a slightly higher number than in March 2015, and 1% lower than in December 2015. The number of sows was 6 million, while the figure for fattening was around 61.7 millions.

Throughout the first half of 2016, mating has fallen by more than 1% over 2015. The coming months will be marked by a trend that will continue downward.

Also, the total number of pigs on integration farms with more than 5,000 head, which accounts for 46% of total census, remains the same as in 2015.

With regard to the amount of meat produced per year, the USA closed 2014 with a total production of 10,360,000 tons of meat. These figures represent an increase of 17.74% over 2000, when production was 8,586,000 tons of meat.

A total of 106,876,000 pigs were slaughtered in the US in 2015, 8.61% more than in 2000.

Although production is spread throughout the country, there are some states where it is stronger; two-thirds of US hog farms are concentrated in five states: Iowa, North Carolina, Minnesota, Illinois and Indiana.

Furthermore, from US 2013 pigs have been under the threat of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED), which has had a significant impact on the census and the price of meat products, so that biosecurity has become an essential tool in pig farms in this country. During the first half of 2016, a recovery has already been seen, although, as has been shown, prices remain low, as do profit margins.

Exports and imports United States is the second largest exporter of pork worldwide, ahead of Canada and after the European Union.

In 2014, the country exported a total of 2.18 million tons of pork, valued at 6.67 billion dollars.

American exports have grown in volume by 1,268% since 1989, when the United States established new trade agreements and began to open up new markets such as Japan, Mexico, Canada and China.

During 2015, exports fell by 2% in volume and 16% in value.

However, these sales accounted for 24% of total production in 2015, lower than the 26.5% in the previous year.

As a result of lower prices, strong competition and reduced demand, the USDA expects a decline of 100 million dollars in US exports in 2016.

With regard to imports, USA is emerging as one of the main importers of pork worldwide. In 2014, the country imported a total of 430,000 tons of pork.

Consumption The pork that Americans consume nowadays has little to do with that of a few decades ago. The pork meat products sold in supermarkets are characterised as nutritious and tasty. This change is the result of improvements made by farmers and animal nutrition experts, who have worked for years in breeding pigs to suit the demands of consumers.

Thus, since 2000 the consumption of pork in the United States has remained around 8.5 million tons per year, which is about 30 kg per person per year. These figures represent 7% of the consumption of pork meat worldwide.

This consumption also improved over the last year. After the

losses caused by the PED virus, the increase in production reflected the response of producers to improve yields and increase in litter sizes, reaching 10.33 piglets per litter last February.

Future expectations According to a report by the USDA, demand for pork is expected to continue to rise over the next decade, and that this increase has the support of increase in the final weight of the carcasses reaching the slaughterhouses. In turn, it is hoped that increases in the cost of feed will be moderate.

The forecast for meat prices are not so optimistic. The same report predicts a fall in prices for the next ten years, contemplating slight increases towards the end of that period, thanks to a slowdown in production and increased exports to key markets like the Pacific rim countries and Mexico.

The period between the day when the sows are weaned and when they are covered is short, but very important for their ovulation and fertilisation. In these days, the feed plays an important role. The sows normally come from a catabolic state in lactation and it is important for them to change into an anabolic state as soon as possible to avoid conditioning their productivity. For this reason, during the weaning-heat interval, experts recommend feeding ad libitum, to achieve a good follicular development, which will give a greater quantity and quality of oocytes. In practice, what we find on farms is that the farmer tends to ration all sows alike, and tending to the lower level, to avoid having to remove the excess feed from the trough. Other farmers choose to wean sows in pens with hoppers, but aggressions and feet problems are the main disadvantages of this system.

A possible solution to all these issues is to design a specific area for this period, in which the sows are housed in separate cages with the Feeding Ball as an individual feeding mechanism. This way, we avoid fights, obtain an individualized control of feed intake and guarantee the maximum potential intake of each animal with minimal waste of feed. Keep in mind that food consumption during the weaning-mating

AN ALTERNATIVE FEED SYSTEM DURING WEANING-COVERING. interval varies depending on the day, because the heat approaches, food consumption usually drops.

Ad libitum feeding mechanisms like the Feeding Ball covers this variability of intake while decreasing feed waste, without involving extra labour costs.

MATERIAL AND METHODS To test the functionality of this mechanism in the weaning-mating interval, a trial was conducted in a commercial farm integrated by the company Vall Companys (http:// www.vallcompanys.es/). The piglet production farm, Albiporc SLU, has 635 productive sows with Nucleus genetics and working in weekly bands. In the test, the consumption of a total of 376 sows, spread over 16 lots (April-August 2015) was evaluated. Within each batch, the sows were randomized according to the thickness of their dorsal fat and parity in the two treatments: Feeding Ball (feeding ad libitum,

with a limit of 6 kg/dose) (Photo 1) and Control (hand fed according to the protocol of the, 4 kg/day) (Photo 2). This eating pattern was applied from the day of weaning (Tuesday afternoon) to Saturday (day 4), when most of sows were coming out in heat and all began to receive 2 kg/day (Table 1). After checking the feed intake in the weaning-mating interval, the results of entry into heat and percentage of births were followed.

In addition, prolificacy in the next delivery was recorded, and the piglets were weighed individually at birth to obtain the average weight and variability within each litter.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The results of the test show that the Feeding Ball is a mechanism that enables feed consumption to be optimised during the weaningmating interval. During this period, the sows with the Feeding Ball

device consumed an average of 1.3 kg of feed per day more than the control. The average consumption of 5.3 kg/day is difficult to reach for most farmers, who in the best case provide about 4 kg/day (as in the control test) (Table 2). These figures could even be increased if the consumption recording was done in winter, when high ambient temperatures are not a limiting factor for the appetite of the sows. In the days of the weaning-oestrus interval, the day of weaning and the following are the ones when we most limit consumption with the same dispensers, with statistically significant differences from the control; while in the two days prior to entering into heat, consumption of 4 kg / day fit quite well. Another factor to highlight and that encourages consumption during this interval is that animals have no problems adapting to the mechanism. In fact, the proportion

of sows with consumption of less than 4 kg/day was even somewhat lower in sows that had not previously been in contact with the system, than those that had (Figure 1). So, it proves that this kind device is intuitive for sows through natural habit of rooting.

Despite the higher consumption of feed achieved with the Feeding Ball during the weaning-mating interval, no statistically significant differences were observed in subsequent output results in heat, litter size and piglet weight at birth at the next birth.

Still, parameters such as the percentage of births (Table 2) or the prolificacy of the next litter were numerically superior. Sows who were fed ad libitum with the Feeding Ball in the weaning-mating interval had 0.42 more live piglets per litter (Table 3), without any negative impact on piglet weight at birth, while it is known that piglet weight falls by around 40 g for each additional piglet in the litter (Figure 2). No differences in the variability of weight were observed within the litter between treatments, despite the higher number of piglets born. Piglets weighing less than 1 kg can be a third of the litter when it is very large (more than 20 piglets) (Figure 3). If these piglets survive during lactation, they are largely in the tail in transition and fattening,

which lengthens the time of they occupy the sheds until they reach the desired weight to be sent to slaughter.

CONCLUSIONS The weaning-mating interval is a short and delicate period, which is key to productivity of the sow. During these days, it is recommended that the intake of sows should not be rationed, so the Feeding Ball is a useful tool for maximising the real feed consumption and minimising waste. Not only does it allow feeding adapted to each animal, but that is no problem of adaptation to the mechanism. If we equal dosing in the weaning-mating interval, the day of weaning and the following are the ones that most limit the voluntary intake of the sows. Of course, the sow does not eat if it is not given the opportunity.

Although no statistically significant improvement in subsequent reproductive results through of higher feed intake during the post weaning days was observed, a numerical improvement in the percentage of births and prolificacy the next delivery was appreciated. Sows fed with the Feeding Ball had an average of 0.42 more piglets per delivery, without any negative impact on birth weight or weight homogeneity within the litter.
