The professionalisation of the sector, the modernisation and technification of pig farms and good production figures have not been enough to make this as good a year as expected. Exports have fallen, as have the sales prices, and this has spread a feeling of uncertainty in the sector about the coming months. Despite this, at the productive level, the sector is at a good moment and prepared to take on new challenges with the aim of producing more and better. So, we must face 2015 with optimism!

In our field of business, EuroTier last November showed us that, at Rotecna, we are doing things well. The novelties we presented at the fair generated a very good response from our clients and the farmers who came to see them. Thus, despite the understandable uncertainty that is palpable, the pig sector faces the future with the aim of continuing to grow and to do so, wagering on those products for the farms that enable them to be more efficient energetically and achieve the maximum performance. Thus, with the aim of continuing to respond to the sector’s needs, in Rotecna, we will keep on investing in R+D+i to supply the market with new products and solutions.

“Over recent years, the company has grown exponentially and in 2014 we could say we have seen the consolidation of Rotecna leadership as a specialist in equipment for the pig sector.” That is how Rotecna’s general manager, Amable Izquierdo, summed up this year.

In Catalan popular culture, building the nativity scene or crèche is almost an inescapable tradition, more so if there are small children in the house. Mary, the baby Jesus, Joseph, an ox and a donkey, angels, the Magi and the shepherds are the main characters of this miniature depiction of the birth of Jesus. However, if there is one figure who has become the star of the crèche in Catalonia, this is the caganer, literally the defecator.

Among the characters who have been converted into caganer, there are politicians like the US president, Barack Obama, the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, or the Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy. There are also versions of the writer William Shakespeare, the singers Madonna or Freddie Mercury, as well as a long list of footballers including Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi.

The traditional figure of the caganer is a typical Catalan peasant, squatting down, wearing a white shirt, dark trousers and a red barretina (a typical Catalan cap), often smoking a pipe, usually defecating under a bridge, behind a haystack or in some other corner of the nativity scene.

The major growth of the company over these years has meant the need for new investments to guarantee our commitment to the best service to our clients. “It must be remembered that you cannot be the champion of the league if you don’t have the best resources”, Izquierdo assures. He adds, “This way, in parallel to the growth of the company, we have continued investing in improving our resources, installations, personnel,... to achieve new success”. In line with this philosophy, in 2014, Rotecna has upgraded and started using the new buildings acquired at the end of 2013, which have extended the company’s production area from 20,000 to 35,000 square metres.

New markets On the other hand, another of the firm’s lines of work is to increase the international impact of the Rotecna brand. As well as being a year of consolidation of the company on the markets where it was already present, 2014 has seen the opening of new markets so that we are now present in over 80 countries.

On the other hand, the popularity of the caganer in Catalonia led to the creation of the association Amics del Caganer (Friends of the Caganer) at Christmas 1990. This association works to promote this figure, report each year’s novelties from the makers and organise exhibitions of caganers, among other activities.

Moreover, for Christmas, the entity organises an annual supper for its members where the “Caganer de l’Any” (Caganer of the Year) award is presented. This is given to the public personage who stands out most for his or her

contribution to spreading and promoting this figure.

The ‘caganer’ goes international The growing popularity of the caganer, its promotion and presence in the great Christmas markets, like the Santa Llúcia market in Barcelona, have led to its internationalisation.

Thus, the sales of this figurine are not restricted to Catalonia and the rest of Spain, and some of the craft makers of these figures have widened their market to other countries like the United States, Singapore or Japan.

There are actor caganers like Groucho Marx or Humphrey Bogart and the world of fiction also has its own, with Gollum from the Lord of the Rings, C3PO, Captain America, Ironman or Mario Bross, among many others.

Thanks to the material used in these panels being highly resistant to corrosion by pig slurry, the chemical products used for disinfection and other corrosive agents, they guarantee the farmer high durability. Moreover, their smooth surface facilitates cleaning and hygiene to maintain them always in a perfect state and optimal conditions of sanitation.

The client is offered two different models in the new range of Rotecna panels, blind and ventilated. With standard dimensions of 1000x1200x50mm, the panels can be produced and supplied in any size required by the client, with exactly the same characteristics and advantages.

The internal structure has a grid shape. This design means that the welding (hot plate system) is homogeneous, stable and firm, characteristics that, added to the hermetical sealing, give our panels the robustness that ensures great durability and resistance.

With this new range of products, Rotecna offers farmer an effective solution for the system of dividers in various phases of production.

PORK EXPORTS TO RUSSIA FALL 89% The Russian embargo is causing havoc in the European pig sector.

The 89% drop in European exports to Russia between January and September 2014, when it was the largest purchaser in 2013, has generated a surplus on the markets and a generalised fall in prices.

The efforts to cover the 485,000 tonnes of meat that Europe has not been able to export to Russia over these nine months have not been sufficient, although they have served to increase exports to Asian markets. Thus, between January and September 2014, exports to Japan rose by 50%, to the Philippines, by 94% and South Korea by 92%. With a 1% rise in exports, China has become the country that buys most pig meat from the European Union (500,778 tonnes).

However, as indicated above, despite the efforts made to sell EU pig meat on other markets, the total volume of exports fell by 7.3% in the first nine months of the year compared with the same period of 2013, with 2.12 million tonnes exported. The European pig sector faces a surplus of supply, which has led to a fall in prices in almost all countries in the EU. Only between weeks 39 and 42 of 2014, the average pig meat price in Europe fell by 10% to eur. 142.72 /100 kg, which was eur. 15 less, according to data from the BPEX.

With a 1% rise in exports, China has become the country that buys most pig meat from the European Union (500,778 tonnes).

However, as indicated above, despite the efforts made to sell EU pig meat on other markets, the total volume of exports fell by 7.3% in the first nine months of the year compared with the same period of 2013, with 2.12 million tonnes exported. The European pig sector faces a surplus of supply, which has led to a fall in prices in almost all countries in the EU. Only between weeks 39 and 42 of 2014, the average pig meat price in Europe fell by 10% to eur. 142.72 /100 kg, which was eur. 15 less, according to data from the BPEX.

Consumption One of the factors that historically most concerns producers in any sector is the domestic consumption of their product, given that an increase in demand implies an increase in profits and margin to continue growing. In the case of pork meat in Colombia, domestic consumption has risen year after year over the last decade, from 2.9 kilos per person in 2002 to 6.7 kilos in 2013, and is forecast to reach 7.3 kilos in 2014 (Graph 1).

Among the factors that influence the higher consumption of pork, the annual report of the Asociación Colombiana de Porcicultores indicates the increase in family incomes as the most important: if income increases, the spending of the families rises.

After a good 2013 for the pig sector in Colombia in terms of production, consumption and prices, 2014 began with very good prospects, with the confidence that the volume of production would remain above 3 millions head, an increase in the average consumption per person and year from 6.7 kg to 7.3 kg, as well as maintaining a bullish tendency in the prices for the producers.

In fact, there were good overall figures in the early months, but the appearance of the first cases of PED (Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea) in some farms in Boyacá, Cundinamarca, Huila, Santander and Tolima in March sounded all the alarms and led to fears of suffering the same losses as those registered in the United States, Canada or Mexico. Finally, the sector has been able to recover rapidly and, after the first urgent measures taken, Colombia managed to control the PED outbreak and end it in June, only three months after the suspected cases were detected. In this sense, improving the health status, and eliminating and controlling diseases through biosecurity, are some of the main challenges facing the pig sector in Colombia for the coming years.

Regarding the number of sows, this rose between May and June compared with last year in Germany, Holland, Spain, Denmark and Hungary.

Pork consumption in the European Union has remained stable in 2014, with low levels similar to those of 2013, of 31 kilos per person and year.

However, the forecasts for 2015 are for pork consumption to rise thanks to a greater availability of meat on the EU market and the higher prospects for economic growth.

According to the figures for the shortterm from the European Commission based on Eurostat data, pork meat consumption will generally increase within the European Union from the 41.07 million tonnes of meat consumed in 2013 to the 41.88 million tonnes forecast for 2015. If we convert these figures into consumption per head, this will rise from 64.5 kilos per person and year to 65.5 kilos.
