With this in mind, at the end of 2013, we acquired some land and buildings neighbouring our production plant. These have allowed us almost to double the size of our holdings. To maximise the return from this extension as soon as possible, we have dedicated a good part of our efforts in this first quarter to updating and adapting the new installations and building new ones.

The new distribution of the company, detailed on later pages, enables us to make production and despatch more agile with the aim of optimising the working of the company and improving the service we offer our clients.

With our firm belief in innovation as the only possible way to remain competitive in this sector, we are also aware that together with the work in the R+D department, we have to create new production facilities, bid for the new technologies, have the latest machinery and, to sum up, invest in the future to maintain our position as a leader in the production of equipment for pig farms.

Finally, I must mention the difficult situation the European market is going through five months after the closure of the Russian frontier to all pig meat from the European Union due to the cases of ASF detected in Lithuania, Poland and Latvia. As was to be expected, this totally disproportionate measure has had effects on the figures for EU exports, which fell by 9.1% in the first quarter of the year. However, the blow has not been as hard as anticipated thanks, partly, to the difficulties the sector is having in the USA where Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea is seriously affecting production. We shall see how European export sales evolve during this second quarter as there seems to be no progress in the negotiations between Europe and Russia to lift the embargo. So, we will have to look out for ourselves and promote European pork on other markets that can absorb the 700,000 tonnes of pig meat that were being exported to Russia every year.

ROTECNA EXTENDS ITS INSTALLATIONS Rotecna has extended its installations with the aim of increasing its capacity for production and storage, ands to improve the attention and service it supplies to its clients.

In the words of Rotecna’s director general, Amable Izquierdo, “We are an expanding company, in constant growth and with a very clear policy: innovation, innovation and innovation, and that requires the space to absorb the wide range of products we offer the pig sector”. This way, with the target of dealing with the growth of the company, in both production and turnover, at the end of 2013, Rotecna acquired land next to the its plant in the industrial estate in Agramunt. The new property is an extension of the installations by 15,000 square meters reaching a total of over 35,000 square meters, of which 18,500 are built up.

To be able to optimise these new terrains as soon as possible and to integrate them into Rotecna’s production line, in the first months of 2014, the company has invested in renovating and adapting them. Thus, the existing building has been reorganised and extended

into this land to dedicate it to storing the finished product, packaging and preparation of orders, and a large area has been prepared for despatch with a new agile and fast loading bay with enough room for trucks to manoeuvre without hindrance.

The new restructuring of the company will enable us to improve the logistics, optimise the working of the production plant, which has also been restructuring with the availability of more space to work more comfortably, and a much clearer productive procedure has been established: injection, storage of pieces and assembly in the old buildings, and storage of finished product, packaging and despatch in the new installations. “With this new distribution, we will rationalise and speed up the company’s working, and this will enable us to reduce costs, time and risks”, Izquierdo states.

With all this, the extension of the installations at Rotecna should facilitate, on one hand, being able to respond to the company’s current production needs and, on the other, invest in a future where space is not a limiting factor on our ability to innovate, design and create new products. In this sense, last year Rotecna acquired a

From local festival to international fair The Tàrrega Street Theatre Fair was born in 1981 with the aim of converting the September Local Festival into a great event, encouraging the people to participate and making use of different public places. Four years later however, the fair had grown and become an event with its own personality and a reference point for the theatre world at the national level. Thus, the popular festival that was the Fira del Teatre in its beginnings had evolved, become professionalised and turned into the place

On the other hand, the organisation created La Llotja, a meeting and point for professionals, companies and programmers that facilitated the debate on current issues, the contracting of shows and the possibility of agreeing shared projects for the future.

From the 1990s, the Fair took a step forward and, without abandoning the idea of a popular festival in the street, it began to extend its presence to all the leading theatrical festivals, principally European, to attract the interest of programmers from all over the world, and began the path towards its internationalisation which is a reality nowadays.

large injection machine to make large-scale pieces. According to Izquierdo, this means “the need for more room for these pieces and to have the most up-to-date machinery to continue innovating and extending our range of products for the pig sector”.

Finally, the new arrangement of space in Rotecna also means an improvement in the company’s image, a very important aspect in such a competitive sector and in which the company is convinced that it has to invest to consolidate even more, the loyalty of our clients to the products with the Rotecna brand.

The company is currently working to finish designing the last details of the refurbishing of the new space so that it can begin normal working during these summer months.

In the first quarter of this year, the exports of meat from the European Union have suffered a fall of 9.1% compared with the same period of the previous year. The data presented by the Management Committee of the Common Organisation of Agricultural Markets on the 22nd of May show this important drop in exports that were 654,067 tonnes in the first quarter of the year, in other words, 65,000 tonnes less than the first quarter of 2013. The main reason for this fall is the Russian embargo that has seriously affected Germany, Spain, Denmark and France.

However, the evolution has varied between countries. For example, Germany, the leading exporter of pig meat in the European Union, has suffered an 18%, reduction of its exports, 34,500 tonnes less falling to 150,302 tonnes. In contrast, Denmark, the second exporter, has registered a slight rise of 0.7% to 133,209 tonnes. Finally Spain, the third largest exporter, has shown an 8,650-tonne decrease in exports of, 10% less, down to 77,981 tonnes.

On the other hand, China, Hong Kong and Japan are the main destinations for European pig meat, respectively representing 26%, 14.4% and 10.5% of the total pig meat exports. Although expected, the fall in exports to Russia after the embargo is notable, with a drop of 71% compared with the previous year.

In contrast, we can highlight the rise registered in exports to South Korea (91%) and Philippines (69%), an increase that has occurred partly due to the situation with the outbreaks of the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) virus in

A fall in imports The imports into the European Union continue their downward tendency, with a 5.7% reduction compared with the same period of the previous year, and a figure of 8,602 tonnes. Switzerland continues to be the main supplier with 51% of the total quota, although this is a drop of 6%, followed by Serbia with 12% of the imports and an increase of 73%. Chile is the third supplier of pig meat (9%), followed

by Norway (8%) and the United States (4%). It is notable that the imports of pork from the United States have suffered a reduction of 26% from the first quarter of 2013, partly for the PED that is affecting American production.

STREET THEATRE FAIR began to go deeper into the idea of expanding the venues outside the town itself and began to programme shows in nearby villages like La Figuerosa or El Talladell or even hold performances in the countryside, far from the bustle of the fair to capture the audience’s full attention and take them into another world.

Year after year, the event has grown to the point where nowadays over four days, the Fira del Teatre al Carrer hosts more than 300 performances of around eighty shows, some of which hold their world premiere in Tàrrega.

The financial impact of the fair is in excess of 6 million euros per year, some 2.3 million of which remain in the town and its immediate surroundings. The next edition will be from the 11th to the 14th of September.

Support for creation In recent years, the organisation of the event has worked so that the Fair is not restricted to only the four days of performances and meetings between professionals, but to make it into an event with activity all year round.

Thus, in 2011 the Support for Creation programme was begun. Through this, the Fira

establishes a plan for artistic stays that contemplates three lines of action: the Creation Laboratories, the Creative Residencies and the Resident Company. In all three cases, all the structure and services of Fira Tàrrega are made available to the creators, who spend their stay in the town to give shape to their shows.

This way, Fira Tàrrega is a permanent structure for revitalisation that works all year round giving support to the creators of stage arts and contributing to the creation of new markets for the street arts.

In this same line, one of the recent novelties of La Fira has been for training through various courses and workshops aimed at artists and, often also to all the population.

The high point has been the starting of the Master in Creation in Street Arts jointly with the University of Lleida. The first of these courses was done in January 2013. It is a pioneering experience in Europe that offers post-graduate university training aimed at the professionalisation of the artists in the speciality of the street arts.

ULTRA-RESISTANT CHAIN With the aim of adapting our products to the specific needs of the farmers and the characteristics of the installations, Rotecna has launched a new chain for feeding systems. The new Ultra-resistant Chain (with green disks) is designed to work in long installations, as the hardness of its links makes it more resistant to stretching and tensioning.

The new Ultra-resistant chain is added to the other two chains that Rotecna offers. The Zinc-plated steel chain (with yellow disks), for small and medium sized installations, and the Nitrurated carbon chain (with blue disks), very useful in multi-phase installations without wear in the distribution line that works empty for periods of time.

All three models adapt perfectly to the Rotecna conveyor drive unit that has a shock absorbing system in the drive wheel teeth to reduce the tension in the chain and lengthen its life. Moreover, this conveyor system is designed with curves and pulleys to avoid the feed becoming stuck.

Rotecna is giving the farmer the choice of the product that will work better depending on the characteristics of the farm, the distribution system in use and the distance it has to carry the feed.

It is essential to install the Delta Silent Block with the Delta Beam to obtain greater stability and resistance on the ground. The Delta Silent Block is a polypropylene cover perfectly adjustable at the ends that has recently been redesigned by the Rotecna technicians to increase if this is still possible. The base of this piece has been widened to allow perfect seating of the beams and the slats in the farrowing or weaning rooms, an important aspect given the growing tendency towards bigger spaces in these productive phases.

Production In Mexico, pork represents 21% of total meat production, behind chicken (48%) and beef (31%).

However, there has been a rise in pig rearing over recent years with an average annual increase of 1.1% over the period from 2001 to 2011.

While production in 2001 was 1.06 million tonnes, in 2011 this had risen to 1.18 million tonnes. This tendency continued into 2012 and 2013, and this constant growth is forecast to continue.

Regarding exports, although Mexico still has a long way to go, the tendency is positive. In 2011, the volume of pork exported was 67,000 tonnes, a growth of 10.5% over the

Imports If we look on the world level, Mexico is among the leading pork importers.

According to data for 2011, the Mexican Republic was in fourth place, behind Japan, Russia and China.

On the other hand, the leading destinations for Mexican exports of pig meat are in Asia, with specifically Japan as the main market. In figures, 46,800 tonnes were exported to Japan in 2011, an increase of 2.9% over the previous year.

In contrast, the figures for consumption and production have risen over recent years. Moreover, Mexican pork is becoming a highquality alternative in the most demanding markets, as shown by the growth in exports to Japan, the main market for Mexican meat.

Reaching a balance between imports and exports is one of the main challenges for the pig sector in Mexico. According to data from the report Panorama Agroalimentario 2012 by the FIRA (Fideicomisos Instituidos en Relaci贸n con la Agricultura), there is a deficit in the Mexican balance of trade. Thus, during 2011, for every tonne of pig meat exported, ten tonnes were imported.

So, we can state that 40% of the pork consumed in Mexico is imported, principally from the United States, Canada and Chile, according to data published by the FIRA in the report Panorama Agroalimentario 2012.

A report by the FIRA in 2011 concluded that Mexico imports ten

previous year. An upward tendency that, as mentioned above, has been sustained from one year to the next.

For example, in 2012 the volume of exports rose by 5.6% to 71,000 tonnes, and in 2013, foreign trade in pork rose to 84,000 tonnes, an increase of 15.5%.

GLOBALPIG exports in 2009, coinciding with the outbreak of A/H1N1 influenza, which affected the perception of Mexican pork on the Asian market. Currently, following campaigns to repackage the image of this product, the volume of purchases has recovered, although it is still only at similar levels to those of 2006.

Behind Japan, other markets for Mexican pork include South Korea and the United States.

A deficit in the balance of trade One of the main challenges for the Mexican pig sector is to increase exports, and in this sense, there is still a long way to go.

During 2011, the Mexican balance of trade in pig meat was in deficit: for each tonne of meat exported, 10 tonnes were imported. Thus, in 2011, the deficit in the balance of trade, in terms of volume, was 659,000 tonnes.

As a positive aspect, mentioned above, we can note that the tendency in recent years in Mexico is to reduce the volume of imports and increase exports.

THE EPIDEMIC DIARRHOEA FORCES UP PRICES IN THE USA The price of pork in the United States is at very high levels (2.419$/kg carcase = 1.77 €/kg carcase) due to the effect of the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) virus, that has reduced slaughters by 4.8%.

Pig production in the USA is profitable for the farmers who have not been penalised by the disease. Since early May, there have been around 200 cases of PED per week, which, although a high number, is tending to fall and is far from the 300 cases per week that were declared in February.

The figures for the frozen stocks show the difficult situation of the market, given that as well as a 4.8% fall in production the stocks have fallen by 17%, which together has led to a surge in prices.

PED affects pigs at all ages, although mortality is highest among piglets.

Cases in Canada and Mexico The Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) virus has also affected some herds in Mexico and Canada. So far this year, the Canadian administration has informed the OIE about the appearance of up to 58 cases. There is no legal requirement to report cases of PED in Canada, but there is a national animal health control network that has been used to monitor and report on the situation.

Moreover, it is now obligatory to report it in some provinces like Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. On the other hand, 83 foci of PED have been detected in Mexico since July 2013.

Spanish ham in Mexico Hams, together with matured sausages, are the main pork products that Spain exports to Mexico.

Spanish exports of Serrano ham have found a great market potential in Mexico and sustained growth.

Over recent years, there has been growing interest in ham and cured sausages from Spain. In 2012, with a figure of 82.7 tonnes, the Mexican Republic became the fifth destination for Spanish cured ham exports, according to a report published by the ICEX on El Mercado del jamón y el embutido curado en México (The ham and cured sausage market in Mexico).

The only handicaps for exporting to this market are the strict health requirements imposed on meat products by the Mexican government. Specifically, to export Serrano and Ibérico ham it is essential for the producing companies to be authorised by the SAGARPA (Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Food). Moreover, this authorisation is granted plant by plant, and to obtain it, it is necessary to have the visit and approval of the Mexican inspectors. There are currently 79 Spanish plants producing ham and meat products that are authorised to export to Mexico.

The presence African Swine Fever (ASF) in the European Union continues to be a first order health concern since the 30th of May when the Polish authorities notified the OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health) of two new foci. A total of 4 wild boar have been found dead in the Podlaskie region, on the frontier with Byelorussia.

On the other hand, on 25th of June three wild boars were founded dead in Latvia. Moreover, the first confirmed cases of ASF in domestic pigs appeared in a Latvian farm. So the Community pork market is not going through its best moment.

The Russian decision to close its borders after the news of the first cases of ASF in Lithuania is still generating serious economic consequences. Bear in mind that Russia was until now the European Union’s leading client for pork.

However, the EU states are not the only ones directly affected by the Russian decision. The Russian market is also feeling the effects of the current situation and pork prices have rocketed as a consequence of the shortage of this meat. This shortfall is related directly to the embargo imposed on the EU imports. Since the borders were closed at the end of January, some import 1.3 million tonnes of meat have not been imported, a figure that is practically a third of all the pork imported in 2013. On the other hand, the shortage of pig meat supplies in the USA caused by the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) virus have prevented Russia from replacing the gap in the market left by the missing EU exports.
