Baltic production in the EPP Gener Romeu Rotecna's President

Last month we took part as exhibitors, in the Eurotier fair, which has become the most important event at the world level for the livestock sector. Our presence in this edition (regarding the exhibition space) was 35% larger than the previous edition in 2010, the same proportion that the organisation itself has grown in space and general participation (according to official sources). Eurotier was the showcase chosen to present all the novelties that ROTECNA has developed over recent months and also those about to be launched. There are more than a few of these and they respond to the ongoing interest in technifying the sector and great efforts to maintain and even increase the investment in R+D.

The pig sector is undergoing fluctuations all over the planet for very varied reasons, generally outwith the farms. These are the cause of narrowing profit margins: new regulations, health inspections, raw material prices, etc.

There is one factor that always affects profitability favourably and one that is intrinsic to the farm itself: the technification of the installations and equipment.

Everyone is aware that investing in innovation and technology is always an investment in the future. Beyond all those external constraints that fluctuate unpredictably from one area to another planet so rapidly.

Hence my categorical statement: at Rotecna, we are on the right track.

Rotecna has some fifty patents and/or models of utility in the Spanish Patent Office. Ramon Penella is in charge of protecting all the company’s R&D. Every year, Rotecna invests a large slice of its budget in innovating to ensure its products remain market leaders. Industrial design adds value to the product, making it more attractive for the clients and can even become the main reason for buying the product. So protecting the valuable designs tends to be fundamental part of the commercial strategy of any designer or manufacturer who invests in R&D. This is the case with Rotecna.

A great deal of effort, resources, time and talent is required to find new materials, discover new ways of doing things or thinking up new uses for old systems. In Rotecna, the Technical Department is where most of the products are thought up and developed. There is a team of four. Ramon Penella is in charge of protecting all the R&D. Patenting

everything owned by Rotecna prevents other manufacturers from copying it.

Nowadays, in the Invenes database, the register of the Spanish Patent Office (OEPM), there are almost fifty Rotecna products. Each product can include various patents and/or registered models of utility.

For a product to be patented, it must be a new invention, implying an inventive activity and having an industrial application. Examples of patented inventions include an anchor piece for floors of gratings or a feeder for very young animals, among others. In the case of models of utility, these are objects (instruments, tools, apparatus or equipment) whose configuration, structure or constitution means an appreciable advantage for their use or production.

Obtaining a patent is a slow process. The OEPM takes about 30 months to award a patent and ten in the case of protecting a model of utility. A large amount of documentation has to be presented to justify the invention, a description of this and plans, etc. Rotecna works with two specialist agencies for writing the claims, as these are one of the most important and delicate parts as the definition is the key in this phase.

Patenting is also expensive. Besides the cost of the agency that takes care of the patent, there is also a payment to register it. The Industrial Property rights are territorial. Thus, a fully internationalised company like Rotecna has no option but to apply for patents in all the countries, which raises the cost even more. . (B.G.)

Olives and the oil from the olive tree have contributed very significantly to the diet of the people and is part of the civilisation of this area. As you know, the olive branch has become a symbol of friendship and peace among nations.

The winners of the ancient Olympic games were crowned with olive branches.

Among other uses, olive oil has been used as a medicine and as fuel, although this latter use has disappeared nowadays. In contrast, there are still people who use it to treat certain ailments. Recent research confirms its benefits for preventing and controlling cardiovascular diseases, problems in the digestive tract and cell oxidation.

The legend The legend states that Athena and Poseidon were disputing the control of the city of Athens and this led appeal to King Cecrops. He decided to award the city to the one who offered it the best gift. Poseidon, the God of the Seas, struck the earth with his trident and a spring gushed forth. However, the water, like the sea, was salty and of no use to the people. Athena hit the ground with her lance and caused an olive tree to sprout to give the citizens food, fuel and protection. In gratitude for the wisdom of the Goddess, the city adopted her name. This legend leads us to think that Cecrops, the city’s founder, wanted to guide his people away from war and piracy and lead them towards agriculture and the creation of cities in the Greek colonies that spread

As well as a fall in profit margins for the farmer, the drop in the number of animals also threatens the supply of animals for the slaughterhouses in the European Union.

The main reasons for this drop in Sow numbers, which has been even faster than anticipated, are the animal welfare legislation and feed prices. In the former, it was expected that the Directive that comes into force in January 2013 would have an effect, either through farms closing or for the need to reduce numbers to comply with the space required for each gestating sow. In the latter case, the problem is that high feed prices reduce the returns on the farms so some farmers do not fill their feedlots 100%. There are also some who have given up the business.

Much of 2012 has been characterised by record prices for pork, much higher than in previous years. This very good news for the producer has been tarnished by yet another rise in costs due to the increase in raw materials for feed. This means that although the accounts of the farms are still in the black, they are not as buoyant as they should be. The reason behind this rise in pig prices is basically due to a drop in supply. This is usual during the summer months as the animals grow slower because of the heat. But a fall has also been noted in the census of fattening animals as a result of the decrease in sows.

According to EU figures, a fall in number of sows was noted this June.

In Spain, this decrease was 2.8% and 6% for gilts. Neighbouring countries have also seen a reduction in the number of sows. This decrease was 3.5% in France and Holland, 2.3% in Denmark and 1.3% in Germany. The fall was much greater in some other countries, such as Italy and Rumania, with 13% fewer animals, and Poland with 10% less. In gilts, Germany stands out with a rise of 10%, in contrast with the figures for Spain mentioned above, or Denmark where the number fell by 7%.

The protecting oil

An oil for each use

This research by the CSIC confirms what other studies had already suggested, that olive oil reduces the inflammatory response produced by food absorption. An excess of inflammation can cause blockages in the arteries, which in turn, has serious consequences, including heart attacks and strokes.

Thus, the consumption of olive oil reduces the risks of these conditions, especially in those people most susceptible.

What oil to use depends on its acidity. Either to use to enjoy its flavour or not to waste it frying or cooking where its acidity will not be appreciated.

At either side of this part, there is a 10-cm anti-slip strip so the piglets do not slip after feeding. The whole slat, including the anti-slip areas, has the same strength to support the weight of the sow.

Lyaonavichyus stated that, “in the last 19 years, no new have farms have been able to be built”, and only upgrades of Soviet-era farms have been possible. However, the market

Regarding the popularity of the pig sector, Algis Baravykas told the European Pig Producers (EPP) Congress, held in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius in June this year, that “people believe that the pigs are badly fed on the farms and are forced to grow fast”. One of the consequences of this is that the consumers prefer to buy pork meat in the local markets, closer to the national producer.

This is the highest growth in three years, and is based around building, industry and financial services. The growth of almost a third in foreign trade in 2011 was one of the highest in the European Union.

Given these figures, the Association recognises that things had to change. One point to bear in mind is the quality of the meat products.

Algis Baravykas, the head of the Lithuanian Association, believes that there are three vectors responsible for quality: the producers, the processing industry and the supermarkets. In the case of the producers, the Association believes that a change in breed is needed; selecting the animals according to the desired type of meat; regulating their feed and creating new conditions for the animals as well as reducing the quantity of medicaments used.

These targets for the farmers give a clear illustration of the shortcomings of the Lithuanian pig sector. The most basic challenges have yet to be met, although there are other more serious handicaps, such as adapting the farms to the requirements of European legislation (such as the animal welfare directive), that make the task of reaching the level of their European competitors even more complicated.

Despite the relatively minor figures of the pig sector, the country has a potential for investment. Nor surprisingly, many projects have been carried out. The leading Lithuanian producer, Saerimmer, has invested 190 million litas ($67.8 million) since it started up in the Baltic country in 1999. The planned investment for 2012 is 6.75 million litas ($2.4 million), nut in June, the company president, Salius Lyaonavichyus, announced that this year the investment would go to Russia instead of Lithuania.

The EPP President Erik Thijssen opened the congress and was proud that such a great number of practitioners and persons who exchanged ideas and experiences, the main purpose of EPP congress according to Thijssen.

With the new regulations on group housing to be fully applied from January 2013, the EPP president said that EU pig production faces its biggest challenge. He asked the audience whether consumers will accept the higher costs of pig meat production or will imports from third countries fill the shortfall in demand due to farmers leaving the business.

Experts from Lithuania, Russia, Belarus and Poland gave interesting speeches about the

economic potential of agriculture and the special topics regarding pig production in the Baltic region.

The talks on the second day of the conference, with speakers from Denmark, United Kingdom, Norway and the Netherlands gave a more global overview of pork consumption, production and trade, as well as strategies against diseases and the use of antibiotics.

A visit to typical Lithuanian pig farm completed the congress. The next congress will be held between 29 May and 1 June 2013 in Veije, Denmark. . (M.P.)
