Welcome Welcome to the winter issue of Rotana magazine. As we draw towards the end of another busy year, our sights are already set on the next phase of expansions, launches and developments. Earlier this year, we committed to opening 19 new properties before the end of 2017 and, already, we are well on our way to reaching this ambitious goal, expanding our presence in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Iraq. At the same time, we are embracing exciting new markets in Africa. The launch of the Kin Plaza Arjaan by Rotana in Kinshasa marks our first property in The Democratic Republic of the Congo and will soon be followed by upcoming Rotana properties in Nigeria, Tanzania and Mauritania. In the future, we will also be exploring new opportunities in Ghana, Mozambique and Angola as we expand our presence across the vast continent. This issue, we spotlight one of these African destinations in our 48 hours in Khartoum focus feature on page 18, highlighting the unsung attractions of the Sudanese capital, from its bustling souqs and fascinating museums to the modern skyscrapers and first-class facilities. Another treasure trove of historic marvels awaits in Jordan, home to some of the Middle East’s most ancient and extraordinary sites. Our feature, on page 24, embarks on a journey across the Hashemite Kingdom, taking in the Roman ruins at Jerash, which rival any outside of Rome, the beautifully preserved Citadel with temples and palaces that overlook the modern city from a hilltop in Amman, and, of course, the Nabatean city of Petra, carved into the cliff face many centuries ago. One of the most exciting aspects of modern Arabia is the rich blend of cultures that characterise many of its major cities, the benefits of which are evident in flourishing art and design scenes across the region. This is particularly the case in Dubai, where quirky boutiques, pop-up fashion concepts and home-grown runway shows are diversifying the fashion offering, establishing the city’s reputation as an international design hub in its own right. We speak to some of the pioneers behind Dubai’s eclectic fashion community and catch-up with the latest industry developments on page 34. We also provide our customary round-up of top events taking place across the region this season, from art shows and film festivals to concerts and sports events, keeping the calendar full right up until December. A waterfront walk Muscat’s captivating corniche stretches for three kilometres along the city’s bustling harbour with views of ferries and boats gliding past as well as whitewashed buildings nestled between rocky mountains. At one end of the corniche is the old dhow port, where fishermen unload the day’s catch every morning to sell at local markets. Further along is the famous Muttrah Souq, a warren of alleyways crammed with stalls selling jewellery, spices, antiques and other traditional trinkets. The corniche is also home to some of the city’s most important landmarks, including the Sultan’s Palace. Also known as Al Alam Palace, this grand structure is the ceremonial palace of Sultan Qaboos bin Said. Nearby are the Muscat Gates as well as the Muttrah Fort that was originally built by the Portuguese in the sixteenth-century. Visible from the eastern end of the Muttrah harbour, the fort is perched on the edge of a cliff and casts a striking silhouette thanks to its traditional architecture.

The new Sudan
Recent decades have seen huge changes in the Sudanese capital as a development surge continues to redefine the city, placing it well and truly on the African tourist trail

Built at the point where the White and Blue Niles meet, Khartoum derives much of its charm from its extraordinary waterside setting. For a long time, the city was seen as a sleepy desert outpost but today, this image has been left behind as Khartoum continues to transform at a rapid rate, with an influx of infrastructure and technology shaping the cityscape. It's also interesting to note that Sudan has the most extant pyramids in the world and the Nubian pyramid site at MeroĂŤ, approximately 100 kilometres north of Khartoum, is a popular attraction in its own right. There are three distinct cities that make up the capital Khartoum, which is divided by the different arms of the Nile. Bahri is primarily industrial and residential while Omdurman has a more Middle Eastern feel. Khartoum proper, the oldest part, is the largest of the three and the seat of the Sudanese government. This natural division provides a helpful starting point for visitors on a weekend visit to Sudan's capital, with a day each in Khartoum and Omdurman and the option to pay a quick visit to discover the highlights in Bahri.

In the very north of Jordan, the small town of Umm Qais sits perched on a hillside. This is the ideal base to start exploring as the town is famed for its spectacular views overlooking the Sea of Tiberias, the Golan Heights and the Yarmouk River gorge. Further on up the hill, is another major attraction, the ruins of Gadara. Once a stronghold of the Roman Empire and, before that, a centre of Greek civilisation, this ancient site bears witness to the area’s historical significance. Gadara was part of the Decapolis, a group of 10 strategic cities linking the eastern frontier of the Roman Empire. Today, evidence of its former glory is discernible in the remains of two theatres carved into the hillside, along with a hippodrome, colonnaded streets and a bath complex. Much of Gadara is unexcavated, which is true of numerous historical attractions around Jordan, where large sections of sites remain hidden beneath hillsides, presenting an ongoing challenge for archaeologists. This was recently spotlighted by the discovery of a new monument in Petra, when satellite imagery and drone photography identified the outline a vast structure beneath the ground. As Jordan’s most-visited city, it comes as a surprise to learn that only 18 percent of Petra’s sites have been uncovered. The Treasury – one of Petra’s most enduring images – leads visitors to a series of other sights, including cave complexes and a 3,000-person Roman-style theatre, before heading up to

the remarkable cliff-top Monastery, which offers a tantalising reward at the top of a steep 40-minute climb. Meanwhile Jerash, located around 50km north of Amman, is justifiably described as one of the best-preserved Roman sites outside of Rome. Beginning at the magnificent Hadrian’s Arch, built to honour a visit by the Emperor in 129-130 AD, the path leads on past the Hippodrome. There are two beautifully preserved amphitheatres here as well several temples, at least 15 Byzantine churches, a cathedral and The Cardo, a wide colonnaded street that was once the hub of ancient Jerash, or Gerasa as it was known in Roman times. While Byzantine and Roman-era sites abound in Jordan, including The Citadel located right in the heart of Amman, there are also many medieval attractions to take in. A short drive on from Jerash is Ajloun Castle, an impressive 12th century structure that surveys beautiful surrounding landscape from a high hilltop. Eight years into her career as a fashion designer, Victoria Beckham’s undeniable success still evokes a degree of surprise. In an industry that allows little room for trial and error, her entrée into the fashion world in 2008 was anticipated with a certain amount of scepticism from the fashion community as it waited to watch another celebrity vanity project unfold. Instead, the debut collection of 10 dresses astounded onlookers, eliciting glowing reviews and launching Beckham onto the fashion scene in a blaze of well-tailored glory. “The woman formerly known as Posh Spice has launched a dress collection, and, believe it or not, it’s one of the hottest things going in New York this week,” commented Nicole Phelps in Vogue while Lisa Armstrong writing in The Times, praised the use of fabrics and attention to detail evident in what she, and many others agreed, was an “impressive, accomplished collection”. There was a time when red soles and luxury labels reigned supreme on Dubai’s fashion scene. As the desert transformed into a modern metropolis, complete with some of the world’s most glamorous malls, shoppers flocked to the city, drawn by the lure of designer labels and flagship boutiques. As the city evolved, Dubai took its place alongside London, Paris and Milan, becoming a global shopping destination and a hub for fashion in the Middle East. Recent years, however, have seen a shift. Increasingly, Dubai is known not only for the abundance of international brands, but also for the homegrown boutiques and fashion concepts emerging in its artistic communities. “The creative community that is being built, including designers, artists and creative minds from the region, was something the city lacked before,” says Stefan Siegel the founder and CEO of NOT JUST A LABEL (NJAL). “It’s a market that’s seemingly saturated but ripe with opportunity for young designers to capitalise on. Designers here have told us that it’s great for new brands and the port’s city location makes it a trading centre between east and west.” Known as the world’s leading designer platform for showcasing contemporary fashion pioneers, NJAL first partnered with Dubai Design District (d3) in 2015 to build a support base for the emirate’s creatives and open up channels of communication to connect the regional fashion community with the global market for international exposure.

We still love our big designer names, but we’re also looking to contemporary designers for more innovative designs and fresh styles,” Lyla says. Designers today are more empowered than ever and compete on an almost equal playing field. In Dubai, the latest Gucci bag garners the same attention as a new design from the hottest regional talent. Jebel Weibdeh Until recently, Jebel Weibdeh was a sleepy residential area, where older Ammanites enjoyed the peace and quiet of leafy sidestreets and flower-filled gardens. Today, an influx of young expats has transformed this space into Amman’s hipster neighbourhood, prompting a slew of quirky cafés and cultural hangouts alongside boutique art galleries and clothing stores.
King Abdullah Mosque Open to visitors of all faiths, this impressive structure was built by the late King Hussein in 1989 to commemorate his grandfather. Beneath the vast blue dome is a prayer hall capable of accommodating 7,000 worshippers with room for a further 3,000 in the courtyard outside. The mosque also houses The Islamic Museum, which contains photographs and possessions of the late King Abdullah I.

Capital of culture With Louvre Abu Dhabi opening this season, we look to the region’s potential as a destination for the arts, mirroring Rotana’s commitment to creative growth

The launch of Louvre Abu Dhabi this winter marks a major milestone in the UAE capital’s development, the impact of which will reverberate across the region. A new era of culture and creativity is dawning in the Middle East, which is now home to some of the world’s most impressive cultural attractions, from the Royal Opera House Muscat and the newly completed Dubai Opera, to the Museum of Islamic Art and the upcoming National Museum of Qatar in Doha. Abu Dhabi in particular, is investing heavily in developing its cultural infrastructure, with Louvre Abu Dhabi set to be the first in a string of galleries and museums planned for the emirate. The spectacular structure, created by celebrated French architect Jean Nouvel, has already attracted widespread international acclaim for its design, which incorporates several extraordinary features, such as a 180-metre wide latticed dome that creates a ‘rain of light’ as the sun streams through into the atriums below. This, and other elements of its design, draw from classic Middle Eastern architecture, combining the past with present in a way that recalls the region’s artistic tradition and reinterprets it for the modern day. The local landscape plays a part too. The sea is an integral feature of the new museum’s layout, which Nouvel has creatively designed to blend water with dry land. While other structures in the UAE have been built on platforms in the water, Louvre Abu Dhabi is unique in that it stands directly in the sea, with the waters of the Arabian Gulf lapping at its walls.

Not surprisingly, this presented enormous challenges during the construction stages of this US$650 million (AED2.4 billion) building, but that has never prevented the emirate’s architects from pursuing ambitious projects in the past. Before the dust from the launch of the Louvre Abu Dhabi is settled, we will already be looking ahead to the opening of the next major cultural institution and exploring the ideas behind another ground-breaking design. The coming years will bring a number of new landmarks to the Saadiyat Cultural District in Abu Dhabi, which is set to be a hub for art and education not just in the UAE but also the wider Gulf region. Joining the Louvre Abu Dhabi before long will be the equally prestigious Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, and the highly-anticipated Zayed National Museum with its distinctive feathery silhouette that has been conceptualised by Foster + Partners to resemble the wings of a falcon. This is just the beginning, for Abu Dhabi and the Middle East as a whole. The reputation of the region as a vibrant destination for the arts is growing. For us at Rotana, this commitment to creative growth mirrors our own ambitious development as we expand our presence in this cosmopolitan capital. With 13 hotels already in operation in Abu Dhabi and Saadiyat Rotana Resort due to open in 2017, the future looks bright as we reach out across the region and beyond in the new year. للمتحف ،الذي مت تصميمه ليمزج بني املاء واليابسة بعبقرية مبتكرة .فعلى الرغم من وجود عدد من املباين التي مت بناؤها فوق منصات يف البحر داخل اإلمارات ،غري أن اللوفر أبوظبي قد صمم ليقف يف البحر مباشرة ،فيما تصفع األمواج جدرانه اخلارجية .ويبدو املتحف وكأنه يطفو فوق املياه الزرقاء جلزيرة السعديات ،الوجهة الثقافية يف أبوظبي. مل يكن تطوير املتحف عملية سهلة ،فبناؤه فرض العديد من التحديات الضخمة من تركيب القبة الزجاجية وحتى إجناز أصغر التفاصيل داخل املبنى حيث وصلت تكلفة إنشائه إىل 650مليون دوالر ( 2.4مليار درهم) ،ولكن هذه التحديات مل متنع املهندسني الطموحني يف العاصمة أبوظبي من استكمال عملهم وحتقيق أهدافهم للوصول إىل النتيجة املرتقبة. ولكن متحف اللوفر أبوظبي لن يكون سوى احملطة األوىل من الرحلة التي بدأتها العاصمة للتحول إىل وجهة ثقافية بامتياز ،وقبل قص الشريط األحمر يف افتتاح متحف اللوفر يف أبوظبي ،ستتوجه األنظار ترقب ًا الفتتاح الوجهة الثقافية املقبلة وسنستكشف األفكار الكامنة وراء تصميم رائع جديد. ستحمل السنوات املقبلة معها عدداً من املعامل اجلديدة إىل احلي الثقايف يف جزيرة السعديات أبوظبي ،والذي سيتحول إىل مركز للفنون والعلم ليس يف اإلمارات وحسب، وإمنا يف كل دول اخلليج .وسينضم إىل املشهد الثقايف قريب ًا متحف جوجنهامي أبوظبي األسطوري ،والذي قام بتصميمه املهندس الشهري فرانك جهري ،باإلضافة إىل متحف زايد الوطني املرتقب الذي قامت بتصميمه فوسرت +بارترنز ليشبه أجنحة الصقر. ما هذه إال البداية بالنسبة ألبوظبي والشرق األوسط بشكل عام .فإن سمعة املنطقة كوجهة للفنون واالبتكار تستمر بالنمو .بالنسبة لنا يف روتانا ،هذا االلتزام بالنمو املبتكر يتماشى مع تطورنا فيما نعمل على زيادة تواجدنا يف هذه العاصمة الدولية .مع وجود 13فندق ًا قائم ًا يف أبوظبي ،ومنتجع السعديات روتانا الذي سيفتتح يف العام ،2017 يبدو املستقبل مشرق ًا بينما نتوسع يف جميع أنحاء املنطقة وأكرث يف العام اجلديد.

انتقل إلى عالم الذكريات الجميل في البلد عمان على وسط املدينة الذي يعرف بالبلد ،هو مكان يعبق بسحر التاريخ يف قلب املدينة الصاخبة .حتافظ ّ عدد قليل من املباين التي يعود تاريخها إىل ما قبل سنة ،1921ويقع وسط املدينة على مركز حضاري تاريخي يعود إىل سنوات غابرة غاية يف القدم .كانت منطقة البلد تدعى فيالدلفيا يف العصر الروماين ،وهي واحدة من مدن الديكابوليس العشرة .وما زالت اآلثار املتبقية تشهد على هذه احلقبة ،من املسرح التاريخي الصامد إىل املعابد البيزنطية والقالع األسطورية القابعة على التلة.
جبل اللويبدة يف السابق ،كان هذا الشارع عبارة عن شارع سكني هادئ يستمتع فيه كبار السن بالهدوء والراحة حتت ظل األشجار واحلدائق التي تعبق برائحة األزهار. ولكن اليوم ،حتول هذا الشارع إىل حي يجتمع فيه الشباب يف املقاهي والتجمعات الثقافية إىل جانب احملالت الفنية املميزة ومتاجر األزياء.
مسجد الملك عبداهلل يستقبل هذا الصرح املعماري املذهل الزوار من خمتلف األديان واملعتقدات .مت بناءه يف العام 1989من قبل امللك حسني الراحل تكرمي ًا جلده .ترتفع فوق املسجد قبة زرقاء مهيبة تظلل القاعة الرئيسية للصالة والتي تتسع لـ 7000مصلي .أما الساحة اخلارجية فتتسع لـ 3000مصلي إضايف .يضم املسجد أيض ًا املتحف اإلسالمي ،الذي يجمع صوراً وممتلكات تعود للملك عبداهلل األول.

دولة البحرين وقطر أيض ًا مستعمرات بريطانية ،قد حصلت على استقاللها يف وقت سابق من هذه السنة .كانت املشاورات تسعى إىل ضم قطر والبحرين إىل اإلمارات التسع ،ولكنها -مع رأس اخليمة لفرتة وجيزة -مل توافق على بنود االتفاق .بعد فرتة قصرية من التوقيع على اتفاقية االحتاد ،أصبح الشيخ زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان ،حاكم أبوظبي ،أول رئيس لدولة اإلمارات العربية املتحدة .يف مطلع العام 1972انضمت إمارة رأس اخليمة إىل االحتاد. حتتفل االمارات يف هذه السنة بعيد االحتاد الـ ،45 ويتم العمل على تنظيم برنامج حافل بالفعاليات ،من أبرزها مسرية وسط مدينة دبي .تنعقد هذه الفعالية يف كل عام وتستقطب احلشود الغفرية التي جتتمع على جانبي الطريق يف بوليفارد حممد بن راشد .ويشارك يف املسرية الفرق الرياضية ،طالب املدارس ،الدراجني ،املؤسسات غري احلكومية ،الشركات ،وغريها من اجملموعات التي تسري يف الطريقة حمتفلة ،ملونة وصاخبة. تستمر األجواء االحتفالية يف خمتلف مناطق الدولة لعدة أسابيع ،قبل وبعد يوم عيد االحتاد ،وتكتسي الدولة بألوان العلم اإلماراتي ،التي ترفعها السيارات ،املتاجر، املنازل وحتى القوارب املزينة بألوان األحمر ،األبيض، األخضر واألسود. الدول األخرى يف املنطقة ال تبتعد كثرياً عن األجواء االحتفالية ،فهي أيض ًا متتلك األسباب املناسبة لالبتهاج. حتتفل البحرين بعيد استقاللها وحتتفل البحرين بعيد استقاللها يف 16سبتمرب ،وتليها قطر يف 16سبتمرب ،وتليها قطر يف يف 18ديسمرب .ويف الدولتني ،يعترب هذا التاريخ عيداً وطني ًا، 18ديسمرب .ويف الدولتني ،يعترب يحصل فيه موظفو القطاع العام وطالب املدارس على يوم هذا التاريخ عيد ًا وطني ًا ،يحصل إجازة .يف الدوحة ،تقام االحتفاالت الضخمة مع عروض فيه موظفو القطاع العام وطالب احلافلة. السيارات الكالسيكية ،األلعاب النارية ،واملسريات املدارس على يوم إجازة وتشمل الفعاليات أيض ًا احتفاالت كتارا بالعيد الوطني ،وهي جمموعة من الفعاليات الرتاثية التي تقام يف قرية كتارا الرتاثية يف املدينة .كما تنظم البحرين برناجم ًا من الفعاليات الرتاثية ،التي تربز التاريخ الغني للمملكة والتاريخ الكامن حتت الدولة املعاصرة. تعترب هذه االحتفاالت جز ًءا من هدف أكرب لالحتفال باألعياد الوطنية يف املنطقة ،ما يعزز الشعور بالوحدة بني الدول العربية ،ويخلق مشاعر الوطنية واالنتماء ،وهما أيض ًا عناصر رئيسية بالنسبة لهذه الدولة اليافعة وشبابها .وتساهم الفعاليات الرتاثية ،التي تشملها أيض ًا برامج اليوم الوطني يف اإلمارات ،يف نشر العادات ،والتقاليد التي بنيت عليها هذه الدولة ،لتبعث روح الفخر والشعور العميق باالنتماء بني السكان الذين يزدادون تنوع ًا مع توسع وتطور دول اخلليج بسرعة كبرية.

تعترب جرش واحدة من اآلثار الرومانية القليلة خارج روما التي ما زالت بحالة جيدة عمان، من الناحية األخرى وعلى بعد 50كم شمال ّ تقع مدينة جرش .وتعترب جرش واحدة من اآلثار الرومانية القليلة خارج روما التي ما زالت بحالة جيدة .إنطالق ًا من قوس هدريان ،الذي يخلد ذكرى زيارة اإلمرباطور يف العام 130 - 129قبل امليالد ،تقودك الطريق إىل ميدان السباق .ويوجد يف هذا املعلم التاريخي مسرحني باإلضافة إىل عدد من املعابد 15 ،كنيسة بيزنطية على األقل ،كاتدرائية والسوق املقنطرة التي كانت مركزاً جلرش التاريخية. وبينما تشتهر األردن باآلثار البيزانطية والرومانية، عمان ،كذلك فإنها تضم ومنها القلعة املوجودة يف قلب ّ عدد من املعامل التي تعود إىل القرون الوسطى .وعلى مقربة من جرش ،تقع قلعة عجلون ،بناء مذهل يعود تاريخه إىل القرن الثاين عشر .وتطل القلعة على مشاهد طبيعية رائعة من أعلى املنحدر .وهي واحد من احلصون اإلسالمية القليلة التي بناها األيوبيون إلبعاد الصليبيني .أما قلعة الكرك فهي حصن صليبي يقع إىل جنوب عجلون ،وكان يحكمها حمارب عظيم اشتهر برمي املساجني من فوق سور القلعة. أما يف مادابا فتوجد جمموعة من الفسيفساء البيزنطية املذهلة والتي تتضمن أقدم خريطة ملنطقة الشرق األوسط ،وصنعت اخلريطة من الفسيفساء لتزين أرض واحدة من كنائس مدابا. هذا التنوع الغني الذي ينقلك يف التاريخ من اآلثار الرومانية إىل املدن البيزنطية والقالع الصليبية هو ما يجعل من األردن دولة جديرة باالستكشاف.

تقع بلدة أم قيس الصغرية يف منحدر جبلي يف شمال األردن .ومنها تنطلق رحلة االستكشاف ،فهذه القرية تشتهر بإطاللتها اخلالبة على بحرية طربيا ،هضبة اجلوالن ،ونهر الريموك .يف أعلى املنحدر ،توجد واحدة من أهم املعامل التاريخية وهي آثارات جدارا ،إحدى املدن احملصنة لإلمرباطورية الرومانية .وكانت قبل ذلك مركزاً للحضارة اليونانية .ويشهد هذا املوقع األثري على األهمية التاريخية للمنطقة .فقد كانت جدارا تنتمي إىل حلف الديكابوليس الذي يضم عشرة مدن اسرتاتيجية متثل اجلبهة الشرقية لألمرباطورية الرومانية .اليوم ،تشهد اآلثار الباقية على تاريخها العريق ،ومنها مسرحني حفرا يف اجلرف الصخري ،باإلضافة إىل ميدان السباق ،الطرقات املقنطرة وجممع احلمام الروماين .ما زال جزء كبري من هذه املدينة عصي ًا عن االستكشاف لوقوعه يف املنحدرات الصخرية كما هو احلال يف العديد من املعامل السياحية التاريخية يف األردن التي متثل حتدي ًا كبرياً بالنسبة لعلماء اآلثار. وقد برز هذا التحدي مؤخراً مع اكتشاف معلم جديد يف البرتاء من خالل الصور اجلوية التي قامت بتحديد بنية واسعة حتت األرض .ونظراً لكونها واحدة من املدن األكرث زيارة يف األردن ،فمن املفاجئ أن تعلم بأن اجلزء الظاهر من مدينة البرتاء ميثل 18باملئة فقط من حجمها احلقيقي ،ومل يتم الكشف بعد عن اجلزء األكرب منها .من أهم املعامل التي مت التنقيب عنها يف البرتاء ،اخلزنة وهي واحدة من اآلثار التي ستحفر يف خميلتك ،وكذلك جممع الكهوف ومسرح روماين قدمي يتسع حلوايل 3000شخص ،أما يف أعلى املنحدر فيقع الدير ،وللوصول إليه سيتوجب عليك التسلق ملسافة 40دقيقة. استكشف القالع الصحراوية في األردن ،والتي تتواجد في عدد من
