Welcome Welcome to this issue of Rotana magazine. We are in the midst of a particularly exciting period at Rotana, with new properties opening across the region and further afield as we build towards our target of operating 100 hotels by 2020. This year alone, we plan to open 14 new properties, taking the total number of our portfolio to 71 before the end of 2017. There are four new properties opening in Saudi Arabia alone this year, as Rotana expands its presence in the Kingdom to cater to the expanding tourism market. This issue we offer an insight into one of the most recently completed Saudi properties, Rosh Rayhaan by Rotana in Riyadh. The five-star hotel is located in the heart of the Saudi capital and takes luxury to new heights with stunning rooms and suites that boast contemporary décor as well as exceptional facilities and premium dining venues. A second wave of works from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi collection is currently on display. This eclectic exhibition focuses on creativity expressed through different media, including installation, painting, photography, sculpture, video, and works on paper. Around 18 artists of different nationalities are taking part with works centred around the themes of performance, process and presence offering a transcultural perspective on art since the 1960s. “[The exhibition] draws back the curtain on the creative process through the work of a diverse group of artists featured in the growing collection…both individually and collectively, they reveal a sense of wonder and magic that can be found in the everyday,” says Richard Armstrong, director of Solomon R.Guggenheim Museum and Foundation. Held in various locations around Morocco’s capital Rabat, performances at Mawazine draw some of the largest crowds in the world, with around 90 acts featuring local and international musicians.

With Abu Dhabi’s classical music season in full swing, the capital is ringing with the sounds of world-famous soloists and orchestras. So far, Abu Dhabi Classics has seen French pianist Lydie Solomon pay homage to Chopin and Staatskapelle Dresden orchestra perform the Symphonic Concert 1: Strauss-Bruckner, among many other musical highlights. The overall theme this season is The Traveller, explains Dr. Ronald Perlwitz. “We’re looking at the theme through different eyes and it will be an interesting journey. It’s not about the tourist or the man that’s going to a place for two weeks. It’s about the traveller that leaves a place not knowing when he’s going back. Headliners this year at the UK’s favourite music festival include Radiohead, Ed Sheeran and Foo Fighters. The largest greenfield festival in the world, Glastonbury takes place every year in the last weekend of June, with a break every fifth year to give the land and local population a break. In addition to music, the festival features comedy acts, dance performances, theatre, circus and cabaret. Ramadan The Holy Month is a time for prayer and reflection

Those visiting the Middle East during Ramadan have the opportunity to gain unique insight into its culture and values. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is known in this part of the world as the Holy Month. This is when Muslims come together in a period of prayer and reflection, fasting during the day and dining together at night. The exact day on which Ramadan begins depends on the sighting of the new moon, after which fasting starts at the first light of dawn on the following day. This year it is expected to begin on May 27 and, for the following 29 or 30 days, Muslims must abstain from all food, drink, smoking, intimacy with their spouse, gossiping and cursing. Another major feature of the Holy Month is zakat, one of the five pillars of Islam, which requires Muslims to give to the poor and needy. The hunger felt during fasting acts as a reminder of the suffering felt by those less fortunate.

An African adventure The Congolese capital surprises travellers with a treasure trove of unique historic and cultural attractions While the growth of the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been impacted by political upheaval in the past, the city is now well and truly on the rise with improved infrastructure and a spate of exciting new development. Once a site of fishing villages, Kinshasa is the third-largest urban area in Africa today, after Cairo and Lagos, with a population of over 12 million people. It is also the largest French-speaking city in the world, with the language used to unite an ethnically diverse population, although many residents are known to use Lingala or speak other Congolese languages, including Kikongo, Tshiluba and Swahili among themselves. This has all greatly contributed to the cosmopolitan character of the city, which quickly becomes apparent on arrival. Visitors will find themselves thrust into the whirlwind of daily life in Kinshasa with all the confusion and clamour that goes with it. The best way for newcomers to navigate is by hiring a trusted local guide to access the highlights, including national museums, natural waterfalls and bustling souks, which are plentiful for those who know where to look.

Endangered species

Zoological Gardens In 1994, local NGO Friends of Animals in Congo, launched an initiative to re-develop the Kinshasa Zoo and save its inhabitants. The facility now focuses on protecting the endangered bonobo, a species of ape unique to the Congo. Orphaned bonobos can be seen at the sanctuary at Chutes de Lukia, where visitors can play with some of the younger animals.

The pace of growth in Kinshasa, already one of the largest cities in Africa, shows no signs of abating with more investment flooding in. Recent reports reveal that it is expected to have the third-fastest growth rate of any city on the continent by 2025.

One look at the online abaya market, and the huge variety of colours, shapes and style available, reveals the diversity this widespread interest has resulted in. Another element of Smart Dubai’s City Transformation Agenda is Dubai Data, which is designed to stimulate a new data economy for the city as it pursues the development of an advanced knowledge ecosystem that helps to enrich the lives of residents. ‫مدن املستقبل‬ ‫دول اخلليج تقود الطريق نحو تطوير البنية التحتية الذكية‪ ،‬وتوفري البيئة‬ ‫الرقمية املتطورة األذكى يف العامل دون منافس‬ ‫—— ناصر النويس‪ ،‬رئيس جملس اإلدارة‪ ،‬روتانا‬ ‫شهدت فعاليات القمة العاملية للحكومات التي انعقدت يف دبي يف شهر فرباير املاضي‬ ‫إطالق تقرير (مدن املستقبل العاملية من منظور دول جملس التعاون اخلليجي) حيث أشار‬ ‫التقرير اىل ان العديد من املدن اخلليجية وعلى راسها مدينتي ابوظبي ودبي مؤهلة الن‬ ‫حتجز لها مكانا متقدما على قائمة مدن املستقبل‪.‬‬ ‫ومن املعروف ان التحول اىل مدن املستقبل يتطلب توفر ثالثة حماور رئيسية أولها‬ ‫وجود البنية التحتية املتطورة وثانيها توافر الكم الرقمي الذكي باإلضافة اىل احملور‬ ‫الثالث الذي يعنى برفع درجة االهتمام يف البيئة‪.‬‬ ‫وعلى هذا األساس فإن ثمة مناذج يف دولة االمارات العربية املتحدة تعكس بشكل‬ ‫كامل ومتكامل الصورة احلقيقية ملدينة املستقبل ولعل أوضح هذه النماذج حاليا هو‬ ‫مدينة مصدر يف ابوظبي‪.‬‬ ‫فقد صممت هذه املدينة لتكون أكرث املدن املستدامة حول العامل‪ .‬فهي تستمد طاقتها‬ ‫من حمطة للطاقة الشمسية ومزارع رياح تضمن ان تكون املدينة خالية من انبعاثات الكربون‪،‬‬ ‫هذه املدينة التي حتظى ببنية حتتية متطورة تشمل شبكة من املواصالت الكهربائية التي‬ ‫تسري حتت شوارع املدينة التي خصصت للمشاة‪.‬‬ ‫ونتيجة لتوفر الكم الرقمي الذكي واملتطور يف مدينة مصدر فقد اصبحت حمطة‬ ‫ألصحاب الشركات وخاصة تلك القائمة على التكنولوجيا النظيفة‪ ،‬لذا فإنه من املتوقع‬ ‫أن يعيش يف مدينة مصدر ما يقرب من ‪ 40‬ألف شخص‪ ،‬بينما يزورها كل يوم ما يقرب من ‪50‬‬ ‫ألفا آخرين ممن سيذهبون إىل أعمالهم يومي ًا‪.‬‬ ‫اما على صعيد املساعي للتحول اىل املدن الذكية او نحو بناء مدن املستقبل فقد‬ ‫قطعت دولة االمارات العربية سواء على املستوى االحتادي او املستوى احمللي شوطا‬ ‫طويال مكنها من ان تكون يف صدارة الدول الساعية لهذا الهدف على الصعيدين العربي‬ ‫واإلقليمي إن مل نقل على الصعيد العاملي‪.‬‬

‫فقد اعتمدت احلكومة االحتادية منذ فرتة عدة معايري ومؤشرات للتحول اىل مدن‬ ‫املستقبل مثل حتديث وتطوير البنى التحتية وتطوير البنى التحتية الرقمية والعمل على‬ ‫تقليل االنبعاثات الكربونية وترشيد استهالك الطاقة واملياه وغريها من االجراءات كما‬ ‫قامت بعض احلكومات احمللية وعلى رأسها امارة ابوظبي ودبي باتخاذ تدابري مماثلة‬ ‫اهلتها بجدارة لتنال اعجاب املراقبني يف خمتلف دول العامل‪ .‬كما أطلقت أبوظبي يف‬ ‫العام املاضي مبادرة التحول الرقمي لدفع جهود تطوير احلكومة الذكية‪ .‬ومن األهداف‬ ‫الرئيسية للمبادرة‪ ،‬تعزيز التعاون بني اجلهات احلكومية‪ ،‬حتسني الفعالية‪ ،‬زيادة االنتاجية‬ ‫وتطوير وسائل أفضل تسمح للقطاع العام واخلاص وحتى األفراد بالوصول إىل املعلومات‪.‬‬ ‫وبعد فوزها باستضافة معرض اكسبو ‪ ،2020‬أعلنت دبي عن مشروع املدينة الذكية‬ ‫والتي تهدف من خالله اإلستمرار يف عملية التحول الذي جعلت منها أحد الدول العاملية‬ ‫واألعلى تنافسية‪ .‬وتستفيد يف جهودها من االبتكارات السابقة التي أجنزتها لتوفري بيئة‬ ‫حضرية مستدامة متثل سابقة للدول األخرى‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مثاال حتتذي به الدول العاملية يف تبني التكنولوجية املتطورة‬ ‫لقد أصبحت االمارات‬ ‫لبناء املدن العصرية‪ .‬وألن السياحة واجهة املدن املشرقة واملرآة التي تعكس حقيقة تلك‬ ‫املدن فإن أول قطاع مطالب بتطوير وحتديث اساساته هو القطاع السياحي الذي يجب‬ ‫عليه ان يستفيد من اجلهود احلكومية اجلبارة يف هذا اجملال ليقود سياحة املستقبل‪.‬‬ ‫ومن هنا فإننا يف شركة روتانا قد بنينا اسرتاتيجية تقوم على االستدامة وحتاكي‬ ‫اإلجراءات احلكومية يف بنائها ملدن املستقبل فقد قمنا بتطوير بنيتنا التحتية الرقمية‬ ‫اىل اقصى احلدود كما اطلقنا العديد من املبادرات التي تهدف اىل احملافظة على البيئة‬ ‫وترسيخ مبدأ ترشيد استهالك الطاقة والكهرباء كجزء من برنامج روتانا ايرث‪ ،‬منصة الشركة‬ ‫لإلستدامة والذي يقدم إطار عمل شامل إلرشادات ومبادئ االستدامة البيئية‪ ،‬االقتصادية‪،‬‬ ‫واالجتماعية عرب فنادقنا العاملة والتي من املقرر إفتتاحها يف املستقبل‪.‬‬

‫ملسة عربية‬ ‫حتولت العباية من رداء متواضع إىل ظاهرة‬ ‫موضة عاملية على أيدي أمهر املصممني‬ ‫عندما بدأت رفيعة هالل بن دري بتصميم العبايات يف التسعينيات‪ ،‬مل‬ ‫يكن هذا النوع من التصاميم موجوداً يف السوق‪ .‬يف ذلك الوقت‪ ،‬كانت‬ ‫السيدات اخلليجيات وحدهن من ترتدين العباية بتشكيلة حمدودة من‬ ‫األقمشة والتصاميم‪ .‬بدافع من “احلاجة الشخصية لعباية أنيقة مل‬ ‫تكن متوفرة يف املاضي”‪ ،‬قامت بن دري يتأسيس موزان‪ ،‬وهي تطمح‬ ‫لـ “حتويل العباية التقليدية إىل رداء أنيق‪ ،‬مريح وجميل ميكن للسيدة‬ ‫العصرية ارتداءها بثقة وأسلوب متميز”‪.‬‬ ‫بعد عقدين من الزمن‪ ،‬أصبحت موزان إحدى‬ ‫دور تصميم العبايات الفاخرة األشهر يف دولة‬ ‫اإلمارات ويعتربها العديد أحد العوامل التي أدت‬ ‫إىل ازدهار سوق تصميم العبايات يف املنطقة‪.‬‬ ‫تقوم موازن بتصميم العبايات الفاخرة مستخدمة‬ ‫أجود أنواع األقمشة واخلياطة اليدوية التي جتتذب‬ ‫اجملتمعات الراقية‪.‬‬ ‫كانت العالمة تتوجه يف البداية للسيدة‬ ‫اخلليجية‪ .‬أما اليوم‪ ،‬فعمالء موزان يقصدونها‬ ‫لميا عابدين‬ ‫من حول العامل‪ ،‬حيث تقوم السيدات من الواليات‬ ‫هي شيخة من الفجرية‬ ‫املتحدة وأوروبا بطلب تصاميم بن دري عرب االنرتنت‪.‬‬ ‫وإحدى أهم املواهب اإلماراتية‬ ‫تقول بن دري مشرية إىل النمو يف سوق العبايات‬ ‫احلاصلة على العديد من‬ ‫حول العامل‪“ ،‬حتولت العباية من تصاميم حصرية‬ ‫اجلوائز جملموعاتها األيقونية‪.‬‬ ‫يقدمها عدد حمدود من جتار التجزئة إىل ما نراه‬ ‫اختارت دور األزياء الفاخرة يف‬ ‫املنطقة مثل هاريف نيكلز‪،‬‬ ‫اليوم ‪ -‬اآلالف من الشركات التي تقوم بتصميم‬ ‫جالريي ال فاييت وفاليديز أحدث‬ ‫العبايات‪ ،‬سوا ًء كانت عبارة عن مصممني يعملون‬ ‫جمموعاتها كوين أوف سبايدز‬ ‫من املنزل‪ ،‬متاجر صغرية أو عالمات فاخرة لتصميم‬ ‫لعرضها داخل متاجرها‪.‬‬ ‫العباية ضمن دور لألزياء يف األماكن الراقية”‪.‬‬ ‫وتتابع‪“ ،‬وينبع هذا التنوع الهائل يف العرض من‬ ‫الطلب املتزايد على العباية التي حتولت إىل رداء‬ ‫يومي ليس فقط للسيدات اخلليجيات‪ ،‬بل أيض ًا للسيدات من خمتلف‬ ‫اجلنسيات واملعتقدات”‪.‬‬ ‫كما كان الهتمام العالمات الفاخرة يف العبايات دوراً رئيسي ًا يف زيادة‬ ‫الطلب‪ .‬وحتولت املالبس احملتشمة بسرعة إىل سوق مهم‪ ،‬مع تخصيص‬ ‫العديد من العالمات العاملية خطوط للعباية لبيعها يف دور أزيائها‬ ‫املتواجدة يف منطقة الشرق األوسط‪.‬‬

‫عندما بلغت العشرين تقريب ًا‪ ،‬تعرفت شانيل على أحد األثرياء اتيان بالسان‪،‬‬ ‫الذي عرفها أيض ًا على صديقه الربيطاين أرثر كابل‪ .‬ساعدها الرجالن يف الدخول‬ ‫إىل عامل املوضة‪ .‬فقدما لها الدعم عند اطالقها أول متاجرها‪ ،‬حيث كانت تبيع‬ ‫القبعات يف شارع كامبون يف باريس سنة ‪ .1910‬بعدها افتتحت متاجر جديدة‬ ‫يف بياريتز ودوفيل وتوسعت نحو املالبس‪ .‬كانت شانيل تصمم املالبس لسيدات‬ ‫اجملتمع اخململي بعد أن تعرفت إليهن عن طريق كابل وبالسان‪ .‬وبدأت تبني‬ ‫شهرتها تدريجي ًا لتصبح واحدة من أشهر املصممني يف باريس‬ ‫يف العشرينيات‪.‬‬ ‫يف عام ‪ 1925‬أطلقت بذلة شانيل اخلالدة‪ ،‬مع سرتتها‬ ‫الشهرية من دون الياقة وأتبعتها بالفستان األسود الصغري‪.‬‬ ‫هذا التصميم حول اللون األسود‪ ،‬من لون خمصص للحداد‪،‬‬ ‫إىل لون أنيق لثياب السهرة‪ .‬كما أطلقت عطر شانيل ‪ 5‬خالل‬ ‫هذه الفرتة أيض ًا ‪ ،‬دون أن تتوقع النجاح الكبري الذي حققه‪.‬‬ ‫مع انهيار االقتصاد يف مطلع الثالثينيات واندالع احلرب‬ ‫يف سنة ‪ ،1936‬اضطرت شانيل إلغالق عملها بشكل مؤقت‬ ‫ولكنها عادت إىل عامل األزياء يف وقت الحق من حياتها فأطلقت‬ ‫كارل الجريفيلد هو املصمم‬ ‫الرئيسي ومدير االبتكار حالي ًا‬ ‫خط املالبس األنثوية املريحة عندما كانت يف السبعني من‬ ‫يف شانيل‪ .‬وقد ترك بصمته‬ ‫العمر لتستعيد مكانتها يف عامل األزياء الفرنسية‪.‬‬ ‫على دار األزياء بأسلوبه احليوي‬ ‫عزت شانيل اكتشاف شهرتها إلحدى السرتات القدمية التي‬ ‫الذي يظهر يف جمموعة ربيع‪/‬‬ ‫قامت بإعادة تصميمها لتصنع منها ثوب ًا يف الشتاء‪ .‬الثوب‬ ‫صيف ‪ ،2017‬املستوحاة من‬ ‫مماثلة‬ ‫القى إعجاب صديقاتها وطلنب منها خياطة أثواب‬ ‫التكنولوجيا‪ ،‬والتي تنتقل بعالمة‬ ‫يف‬ ‫شهرتها‬ ‫لهن‪ .‬وقد قالت يف إحدى املرات وهي تعلق على‬ ‫شانيل بالفعل إىل القرن الـ ‪.21‬‬ ‫حتويل اإلطاللة البسيطة إىل مظهر أنيق من خالل إضافة بعض‬ ‫األكسسوارات اخملتارة‪“ ،‬بنيت ثروتي من سرتة قدمية ارتديتها‬ ‫بسبب الربد يف دوفيل”‪.‬‬ ‫اليوم‪ ،‬يعيش هذا اإلرث يف دار أزياءها‪ ،‬الذي وعلى الرغم من تطوره ليتأقلم‬ ‫مع املستجدات يف العصر احلديث ما زال يف الطليعة ملتزم ًا مببادئ شانيل‬ ‫األصلية‪ ،‬التي تتمثل يف ابتكار املالبس األنيقة واملريحة‪ .‬فكما كانت تقول‪،‬‬ ‫الرفاهية يجب أن تكون مريحة‪ ،‬وإال فهي ليست رفاهية”‪.‬‬
