OCTOBER ISSUE It’s that time of year again, when our summer clothes are put away for their winter break and out come the winter woolies again. Although, as I write this, it is still remarkably mild and my washing is drying in the warm autumn breeze outside. So actually, it’s really rather pleasant!

Congratulations must go to the Elmbridge Talking Newspaper who wiped the floor clean at a recent awards ceremony event! Such a wonderful service which really deserves this recognition. See pages 20/1 to find out all about it.

Bruce’s Doggie Day Care enjoyed their annual open day. It was an action-packed event and what a cute bunch of clients Bruce has! (I mean the dogs, not the owners, by the way!) We are delighted to share some highlights with you within.

And finally, we have a little local history for you to enjoy, a sad little tale, telling the story behind one of our well-loved local gardens. Thanks must go to Natasha Hicks for this delightful contribution.

n 15th September representatives of Elmbridge and Runnymede Talking Newspaper were delighted to attend the Runnymede Achievement Awards Evening, organised by Runnymede Access Liaison Group.

The awards were introduced

by Chairman, Jonathan Fisher, who is blind and has a guide dog, and the evening was

well attended by disabled and able-bodied representatives of the many organisations offering services and advice to disabled people in the area.

The Charles Babbage Memorial Rosebowl for individual achievement by a disabled person was awarded to Christopher Gilroy, who first joined the Talking Newspaper as Listener Representative in 1999 and was Chairman elected by acclamation at

the Annual General Meeting in 2007.

The Frank Wheeler Memorial Rosebowl was awarded to Mrs. Edna Blowers, who has stood down as a volunteer with the Talking Newspaper after 15 years. During this time, she selected articles from the local papers for the weekly digest and took over the leadership of the registration team, which checks and records the returned pouches from

listeners.

The Bob Davies Award for achievement by a group or service in serving the needs of Disabled People was presented to Elmbridge and Runnymede Talking Newspaper in recognition of its long service to visually impaired people in the Borough.

Elmbridge and Runnymede Talking Newspaper is one of the oldest in the country, having been launched in 1975.

It is funded by the local Rotary Clubs, produced by volunteers

and distributed free of charge to some 120 listeners in the two boroughs. It has been sending recorded digests of the weekly local news throughout 39 years and also produces a monthly magazine edition of items of specific interest to visually impaired people, plus interviews with local celebrities. In November of this year, its 2,00Oth edition will be sent to its many listeners in both boroughs.

The sun shone and dogs and owners had great fun on Saturday (13 September) at the annual Bruce’s Doggy Day Care Open Day. Based in Cobham and serving customers in Surrey and London, award-winning dog crèche business, Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, caters for dogs large and small from Bookham and Balham to Walton, Weybridge and Wimbledon.

The invitation-only client event was held at its purpose-built 15-acre site, giving customers the chance to see the fields their beloved pets play in and meet the staff who look after them.

As well as doggy antics and agility activities, the event raised money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Sponsor a Puppy initiative, with several of their puppies and trainers on site.

Refreshments were also available for hungry hounds and humans, including dog treats, cute cupcakes and a barbecue.

Bruce Casalis, founder and director of Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, said: “It was a fantastic day and I’d like to thank our

O P E N DAY four-legged and two-legged friends for coming along to share the fun. Bruce added: “I’m also pleased we were able to raise the profile

2014 has been quite a year for Bruce’s Doggy Day Care, having celebrated its fifth birthday, won a Best Small Business award and expanded its services and geographic reach to include dog home boarding and the Waltonon-Thames area.

We always knew there was something spectacular about Elmbridge. The leafy green trimmings and rolling hills define the quaint and tidy borough we know and love. However, the peace and tranquillity found here entranced people long before us, some of whom were members of the most famous and instrumental family in the country. ineteenth century Esher housed members of the Royal Family for many years, and there is little

Other landmarks of the time, such as Nonsuch and Richmond Palaces, were also sold and demolished to pay off debts from the parliament.

Only one year after a happy marriage, Charlotte passed away at the age of 21, due to complications in childbirth. Her death caused nationwide devastation as the entire kingdom went into mourning. It has been said that linen-drapers ran out of black cloth as customers flocked to buy mourning attire.

And the whole plot handles superbly well, however daring you are in your arrival at corners. On the open road, having chosen the topmost of the paddle-shift operations and hitting the revs really hard, you remain in a comfort zone ...safe and sound.

Would I buy one? Despite my lack of affection for estate cars, and Trophy Wife’s preference for Porsche sports cars, I could well be tempted. In the light of my sincere appraisal, maybe Milton Keynes-based Audi will now forgive my original sin. Whatever it was... ends.

I still don’t know why or how, and they never bothered to explain, but Audi fell out with me about a decade ago and banned me from their review car service.

Was it something I wrote? Was I too honest and critical of one of their cars? I guess so. Thankfully, with a wee bit of jiggery-pokery, there are alternatives means of getting my hands on their products.

And, just to show there are no hard feelings, at least on my part, I would commend their latest Avant, a thriller of a five-star performer.

The new RS 6 is an estate car to both excite, entertain and proudly stand its ground in a fiercely competitive arena of wellestablished rivals.

Its RS tag - Rally Sport - could stand for “Really Special”. And that coming from me is rare praise because I am not a fan of family estate cars. They are too often too unwieldy, vast lolloping, shaking, shivering examples of clumsiness on the move, and little short of vanlike looks. Not the RS 6. It is a rare beauty, a winner on first kerb-side sight and a gem of a star fronting a trail of throaty exhaust sound to be envied by any overtaken sports car.

It’s a funny thing about the Blues. Listening to someone else singing about their own hardships can make us feel better about own problems.

I discovered the Blues when I arrived on these shores back in ’68. It was a time of the Blues Boom and was a great springboard for artists like Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and even Led Zeppelin.

With some great memories in mind, I am delighted to hear that a new wave of guitar slingers is treading the boards up and down the country, and one of the best young prospects is 22 year old Laurence Jones.

I went along to the Half Moon pub in Putney recently to see Laurence and was blown away by this phenomenal talent. Remarkably, he started as a classical guitarist and won a Young Musician of the Year Award.

Usually, classical players can’t make the transition to rock, but Laurence has not only crossed the wide divide, but he also won the prestigious Young Artist of the Year prize in the British Blues Awards a couple of weeks ago.

Despite his age, he’s the foot stompin’ real deal, and if you fancy being energised by a master of his craft and get that life-affirming feeling that great music can bring, just imagine a cross between Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page and that’ll give you some idea of his style.

Check him out online or on CD, better yet see him live and catch him while you can: he’s the perfect antidote to all those antiseptic talent shows that fill TV’s prime time.

Your garden may be a mass of colour & scent at the moment, but it’s not just for our enjoyment. Flowers will use every trick in the book to ensure that the right pollinator comes a-knocking.

Significance of colour Colour plays an important role in inviting the correct pollinator. As a general rule, flowers that are moth-pollinated will be white – it’s a colour that stands out in the dark.

Winter-pollinated flowers will also be light in colour and have a strong scent to marshal the pollinators onto the landing strip On the other hand, tropical flowers will have strong colours to cope with being seen in strong sunlight.

In UK, very early spring flowers are mainly white or yellow.

Honey bees, although blind to red, distinguish at least four different colour regions, namely yellow (including orange and yellow-green), blue-green, blue (including purple and violet), and ultraviolet. Their sensitivity to ultraviolet enables bees to follow nectar-guide patterns not apparent to the human eye .

Bee flowers, open in the daytime, attract their insect visitors primarily by bright colours. At close range, special patterns and fragrances come into play. Many bee flowers provide their visitors with a landing platform in the form of a broad lower lip eg nectar-guides on the lower spurred petal of the viola, on which the bee sits down before pushing its way into the flower’s interior.

Typical moth flowers are datura, stephanotis, and honeysuckle. The flowers are lightcoloured, with often long and narrow tubes, without landing platforms. The petals are sometimes fringed; the copious nectar is often

in a spur. They are open and overwhelmingly fragrant at night.

Butterflies ‘smell’ with their antennae, and many of them can ‘taste’ with their feet to find out whether the leaf they sit on is good to lay eggs.Good butterfly flowers are conspicuously coloured, often red, generally smaller than moth flowers, and have flat-topped inflorescences that provide the perfect landing space for them

Why do plants smell?

The smell of the flower alerts pollinators that the plant is ready to be pollinated, and when the appropriate insect or animal arrives to collect pollen and/or nectar, pollen gets transferred.

Part of the mechanism that is used to attract insects and animals such as bats to roses and other flowers is the fragrance. Using this powerful lure gets the pollinator in close proximity to the plant. In like manner, the flower scent in turn attracts the pollinator to other plants, making pollination possible.

The fact that flowers smell good is simply Nature’s way of making sure the cycle of life for the plants continues with no interruption.

What’s Cooking?

Cheesey Leek &Mackerel Pasta Bake Serves 2. Prepare: 10 mins. Cooking: 25 mins

Ingredients • 150g essential Waitrose Elicoidali or

other similar pasta shape • 2 leeks, thinly sliced • 350g essential Waitrose Cheese

Sauce • 2 tsp Dijon mustard • 25g pack fresh chives, snipped into

1cm lengths • 110g can John West Natural Steam

Cooked Mackerel Fillets, drained • 25g grated Gruyère

Method Preheat the oven to 200ºC, Gas Mark 6. Cook the pasta in a pan of boiling water for 10 minutes until tender, adding the leeks to the pan for the last 3 minutes of cooking.

Drain the pasta and leeks well and toss with the cheese sauce, mustard and chives. Gently fold in the mackerel.

Spoon into an ovenproof dish, scatter over the Gruyère cheese and bake for 15 minutes until golden brown.

Competition. It is the stuff of life. We all compete, from our earliest days with our siblings for attention, at school for better grades, at work for promotion. I’ve never shied away from it. If we compete well, we are successful. If we compete badly, then we fail – the implications ranging from hurt pride to bankruptcy. So here I am, working in the book trade, running an amazingly popular and successful bookshop in Weybridge where I encounter all sorts of competition including supermarkets, charity shops, and of course, the mighty Amazon.

The thing is, I cannot compete with Amazon because they corrupt and distort the world around them. They sell books at a loss in order to secure market share – it’s called predatory pricing and they use it to put the competition out of business or force them to sell up to Amazon. They base themselves in Luxemburg to avoid tax and VAT. But now I must tell you something quite disturbing. The writer Amanda Foreman recently wrote an article in The Sunday Times which revealed Amazon’s sharp practice of “disappearing” certain authors from its website in an attempt to force publishers into giving bigger discounts. And Amazon sells so many books that publishers could face ruin if they don’t comply (or sell up to Amazon?). It is not difficult to imagine a future where Amazon controls who gets published, promoted and read. It’s going to take some courage to take them to task. It is a monopoly which should be broken up. The big publishers need to hold firm against Amazon’s demands.

Customers need to buy books from independent outlets while they still can. As Amanda says, “Stay silent and soon Amazon will be telling the world what it can read”.

This is more cheering altogether. The Bookshop Book by Jen Campbell. A love letter to bookshops the world over, examining the history of books and looking at over two hundred weird and wonderful bookshops across six continents, from the book-selling barge sailing to France to the Canadian antiquarian book vending machine – I want one.

There will be a few books around this autumn about Sir Winston Churchill, who died fifty years ago. The first to catch my eye is The Churchill Factor by Boris Johnson. Boris looks at his youth, character, way with words and his patriotism. It’s no surprise that what is uncovered is a complex man of contradictions.

Harry’s Last Stand by Harry Leslie Smith is out in paperback. ‘As one of the last remaining survivors of the Great Depression and the Second World War, I will not go gently into that good night. I

Who do you think you are?



If you’ve grown up with those words at the back of your mind, chances are you were cut down to size a few times as a child and either find it hard to connect with the wonderful human being you really are, or have spent much of your life trying to prove to the world that you’re fine, fantastic even. Neither way allows space for the real you to emerge, and both can be hard work.

We can interpret the words we heard as a child in several ways as we grow up: Criticism Children who get the same negative messages too often without enough positive messages to balance them out are likely to believe them. That can lead to low self-esteem, lack of confidence, fear of trying new things or taking responsibility for your own happiness even fear of success.

Challenge Some seem to rise to the challenge and prove they are great. However, many successful people have admitted to secretly fearing they’ll be found out to be frauds. That fear can keep driving them from success to success, leading to stress, fear of failure and a need to keep proving they’re better than others.

Conundrum If, over the years, you’ve just fitted in with what those close to you say or expect - in your choice of subjects at school, your career, family, friends - you may well be asking yourself “Who am I, what is important to me?” by this point.

Gift Some people find a way to turn challenges into opportunities. If, as you grew up, you responded to “Who do you think you are?” by telling yourself “I don’t know, so I’m going to find out and I’ll make sure I’m the best person I

can be,” it will indeed have been a gift.

Why bother to find out?

• You won’t waste energy trying to be someone you’re not • You’ll find yourself in fewer situations you’re not happy with • If you’re happier, people around you will be happier.

It’s never too late • Take your time to find out your values - what’s important to you in life • Get to know yourself better. Ask yourself what you like best about who you are: what you did that you’re most proud of; what you would love to do with your life if you had the chance, and why; what you can do to make the world a better place.
