Christmas shopping and preparations for the festive holidays …. For the last few years, I’ve done most of my Christmas Shopping locally. We are very lucky to have such a wide selection of fabulous retailers to choose from, and what better way to support our local community and businesses? And at the same time, saving myself from crowds of people and the traffic queues of course! There is a whole host of Christmas Concerts and lovely local events taking place this year and we have enjoyed selecting some gems for you; we’ve packed as many options into our pages as possible; I do hope something takes your fancy! Incidentally, Oxshott and Cobham Music Society are taking bookings for their New Year Concerts; these include Spiritato Baroque Ensemble (UK) as well as, Tyler Hay, Piano. Something lovely to look forward too? Details within. Finally, we also include a great competition for all you MG enthusiasts out there! A substantial & lovely book about the history of these much loved cars is up for grabs! This really would make a wonderful Christmas Gift. See page 28/9 for that. We look forward to bringing you more local coverage in 2019 and until then, we wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year, Until next time …

GARDENING WITH AUNTIE PLANTY CHRISTMAS CRACKERS

While we cram our house with all kinds of evergreens, tinsel and sparkle, to create Christmas cheer, don’t write off what is happening in the garden. There are some real Christmas crackers outside in the wind and the rain, all ready to burst into colour and scent. It’s true to generalize that most winter garden flowers are pale in colour, if not white. And, it’s almost true to say that most of these will have a scent. Think about it.. the weather is dark and gloomy and there may well be a fog or a mist about. The only way the flower can hope to attract its pollinator is to shine like a beacon (pale colours show up better in the dark) and to push out a strong scent,. I have three stalwarts in my winter flowering repertoire. The first is Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’, an upright deciduous shrub. The flowers begin to bud up in late autumn, and you’ll probably not see them while the leaves remain on the plant. But, when they open in their full glory, you won’t miss them. In the words of that inimitable Strictly Come Dancing judge – they’ll smell Fab-U-Lus. The second is Lonicera fragrantissima or it’s near relative L. x purpusii ’Winter Beauty’ - I mean, the names really do say it all! Both of these plants will push out their fragrant white flowers, in pairs along naked stems. Unlike other honeysuckles, neither of these is a climber, and should be treated as rounded shrubs.

14 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2018

Actually, I cannot make up my mind which is my third best, so I’ll nominate two as an equal tie. Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Pallida’ (witch-hazel) produces clusters of large, frost resistant, fragrant, spider-shaped sulphur yellow flowers, again on bare leaf-less stems. The added bonus for this little beauty is its autumn leaf colour. What more could you ask? And, the other tie for third is Chimonanthus praecox ‘Luteus’ (wintersweet) which has unusual, pendent and fragrant sulphur-yellow flowers, with purple blotches inside. All of these plants will fare well in any sized garden, but placing them needs a little thought. There is no point tucking them at the back of a border. They are all best put close to a path or other place that you might linger: beside the patio or close to the washing line; perhaps even beside the front door to amuse your visitors. Wherever you put them, your nostrils will truly think it’s Christmas every one of those dark winter days. Valerie McBride Munro is a chartered horticulturist. method

1. Preheat the oven to 180˚C, gas mark 4. Put the parsnips in a large roasting tin & sprinkle over ½ tbsp oil. Season & roast for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven & add the potatoes, radishes, garlic halves & rosemary sprigs to the tin. Toss together in the remaining ½ tbsp oil & season. 2. Warm the redcurrant jelly in the microwave & brush all over the lamb. Season and sit the lamb on top of the veg, then pour in the stock. Roast for 1hr, turning the veg halfway through. Ensure the surface of the meat is thoroughly cooked & the juices run clear, then remove from the oven & squeeze the roasted garlic out into the roasting tin. ELMBRIDGE COUNCIL GRANTED THREE YEAR INJUNCTION

Elmbridge Borough Council has been granted a three year protective injunction banning the setting up of unauthorised encampments and fly-tipping on all identified public land. Following on from the recent three-month injunction granted in August 2018, the High Court today (Thursday 8 November) has extended that injunction for a further three years. The injunction covers all of the Borough’s parks, open spaces and car parks. The injunction prevents any individual from occupying land or depositing waste as well as stopping anyone from entering, or occupying any part of the land for residential purposes, including caravans, mobile homes and vehicles. This has proved a very effective deterrent during the temporary injunction. It will also prevent the Council from having to obtain court orders for the removal of these encampments, which can take several days to obtain, and will authorise High Court enforcement officers to move people on if they take no notice of the injunction order. Failure to do so can result in imprisonment, fines or seizure of assets. The Council evidenced large-scale fly-tipping and the cost of clearing it, damage to gates and barriers, lost parking income and the large increase in the number and size of recent encampments as well as the significant impact on communities living adjacent to each encampment and the loss of community facilities during the summer. Leader of the Council, Cllr Tim Oliver said: “I am delighted that the protective injunction has been extended for three years. This will bring relief to our residents and

22 Looklocal Magazine - Festive Issue 2018

businesses who have been impacted by the disruption throughout the summer. I would like to thank the Officers and Members of the Council for the hard work and diligence required to bring our case to the High Court. We will now carry on with the work we are doing to review the security of all of our open sites so that our communities can enjoy their surroundings, whilst continuing to closely monitor any illegal activity across the Borough.” Superintendent Andy Rundle said: “We understand the concerns and the impact on local communities in relation to allegations of criminality and anti-social behaviour associated with some of the recent encampments. When there is criminality of any sort, regardless of who is involved, we will respond and take action. “It is important to understand that Police powers are very specific and prescribed and do not cover civil issues, which we know can sometimes be frustrating and confusing for our communities. “However, in relation to recent events, we are now hopeful that with this injunction in place we can respond proactively to the concerns of local residents and reduce the negative impact of unauthorised encampments upon the local community.” 2018 has seen an unprecedented increase in levels of unauthorised encampments in Elmbridge, totalling 27 on public parks and open spaces as well as other recent encampments on private owned land such as Painshill Park. The size of these encampments has also risen dramatically with some encampments being over 60 vehicles in size.

Now in its fourth year, the popular event guides visitors around a new route for 2018, taking in locations including the Rock Garden, the Seven Acres lake and the Jellicoe Canal. Jigantics, designers of cultivated illumination, will this year bring a number of brand new blooms to Wisley, including arches of gladioli over the new Wisteria Walk and a bouquet of alliums on Seven Acres. Favourite installations such as the waterliles on the Jellicoe Canal and interactive colour-changing flowers will return to complete the uniquely floral immersive experience. The paved route will take in not only the floral lights, but also a number of Wisley’s most famous and spectacular

trees, bathed in bright colours to showcase their beauty. The magnificent Glasshouse will also be illuminated, where a magical Woodland Realm awaits discovery, with elves, treehouses and Santa’s reindeer all to be found in a beautiful festive display. Look out for sparkling plantfilled baubles hanging from the trees and the towering ‘Christmas tree’ of vibrant poinsettia. Due to popular demand a priority booking system has been introduced for 2018, and all visitors must book a time slot in advance of their visit. Glow 2018 will be open from 4–8pm (last entry at 7pm) every day between 1 December and 2 January except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The Wisley Plant Centre and Gift Shop will be open throughout, with a fantastic range of decorations and gift ideas for all the family, and hot chocolate, mulled wine, mince pies, cranberry and gin brownies and Christmas cake are just a taste of the warming food and drink on offer. MAKING YOUR MONEY

WORK HARDER. Hi everyone, we are pleased to say that we have moved office from 74 Queens Road, Hersham to 26-28 Molesey Road Hersham (as you turn into Waitrose). If you would like to have a chat about any tax or accounting issues please pop in. Elaine & Keith Jones run the Weybridge office of TaxAssist Accountants. Each issue, Elaine provides advice on recent change in tax law, or addresses a topical financial issue.

2018. Based on what you’ve said, it’s likely you should have registered by 5th October 2018. HM Revenue & Customs can impose late notification penalties and the scale of them will depend on your “behaviour”. They will look at how long your delay was, your eventual tax liability, whether you came forward without prompting etc. The best thing you can do now, is register as swiftly as possible. To show HMRC that you are back on top of things, it’s probably a good idea to get your tax return completed well ahead of the deadline (31st October for paper returns; 31st January for tax returns filed online). This will also allow them to finalise any penalty they wish to impose for your late registration and hopefully HMRC will look favourably on you for completing it early.

Temporarily self employed Making Tax Digital for VAT

Q. A.

Who is affected by Making Tax Digital for VAT and when will it apply? From 1st April 2019, VAT-registered businesses with a ‘taxable turnover’ above the VAT threshold (£85,000) are required to keep digital records for VAT and send HMRC their VAT returns using Making Tax Digital-compatible software. ‘Taxable turnover’ includes standard, reduced and zero rated, but does not include exempt supplies or income outside the scope of VAT. Once within the scope of Making Tax Digital for VAT a business will remain subject to the rules, even if VAT taxable turnover subsequently fall below the VAT registration threshold. However, the rules will no longer apply if the business deregisters from VAT or meets one of the exemptions. The new rules will apply to VAT accounting periods that start on or after 1st April 2019.

Late registration

Q. A.

I started a business early this year. When should I have registered by? If you have a new income to declare, this should normally be done by 5th October following the tax year in which it started. The tax year runs from 6th April to the following 5th April. For example - You start renting out a property from 6th June 2017. This falls into the tax year ended 5th April 2018. Consequently, you should register by 5th October

Q.

I finished university earlier this year, so I did some self-employed work over the Summer in town. But I’ve now got a proper full-time job, on the books, in the nearest city. Do I need to declare my small amount of self-employed income? And if so, what is the best method? If you earned less than £1,000 in selfemployment income across the year, you may be able to make use of the Trading Allowance. If your annual gross trading income is £1,000 or less, you may not need to tell HMRC, declare the income on a tax return or pay tax on it. If your income is more than that, you will need to pay tax on it. Normally, newly self employed people would need to register as self-employed. But as you were only temporarily self-employed, I would recommend you instead phone HMRC. If you can give them the dates of your self employment and detail what income you earned, they may be prepared to collect the tax through your tax code with your current job. This would avoid you registering and the need for a tax return and mean that you pay your tax bill throughout the year; rather than leaving it until January.

MGB

THE ILLUSTRATED HISTORY BOOK REVIEW AND COMPETITION An invite to journey down Memory Lane has dropped heavily through my letter box. It is in the expansive and colourful guise of a vast tome entitled “MGB - The Illustrated History!” It took me straight back to my shared ownership of a drop-top MG when I was serving my country as a National Serviceman based at Bomber Command HQ, RAF Wyton, nr Cambridge, with its spectacular display of V-Bombers, Valiants, Victors and Vulcans. My Welsh pal Ed Williams and I, high flyers in our jointly-bought MG, were the envy of the jetsetting crews, and just to add to our eccentricty , in car, we always wore black and shiny top hats when, at weekends, we were outing with undergrads, mainly female. Ah well!!! The reminder of those carefree and madcap days is the pleasurable MGB volume, the fourth edition, from Veloce, the painstaking publishers of automotive books galore. The bulky hardback, a coffee-table spectacular, is not cheap at thirty five quid - but its 256 pages and 260 pictures of the iconic and remarkable fun car are a bargain treat for those of whose affection for the marvellously enjoyable motor is a continuing memory. The author, Jonathan Wood, is the author of more than 30 books on the history of the UK’s motor industry, and he is...deservedly in my opinion... twice the winner of the Guild of Motoring Writers’ Montagu Trophy as well as being awarded similar recognition in America for his handiwork. His co-author, Lionel Burrell was the originator of Classic Car magazine, and, when he is not showing off his 3-litre Bentley, which he has owned for 50 years,he is restoring a rebuild of a 1926 Talbot. They are both committed MG enthusiasts, hence

their unstinting efforts to excite we outsiders from the pedigree frontage of the traditional iconic and bestloved sports car. But back to the Veloce book. It is a treasure. I have not been able to put it down. Its high level is a showpiece and the splendour of the photographs, as well as the recountings, reminiscences and technical detail and data will, I promise, hold any MG enthusiast, or , for that matter, any keen car enthusiast, spellbound. After Ed’s and my demob, he returned to Cardiff and I to my Manchester home town. We agreed he could have our wee treasure. I moved on to a convertible Sunbeam Talbot, then, much later, I progressed to super-car heights with three successive E-Type Jaguars and then a Lamborghini Espada. Was I crazy? Each,in its own showcase way, was a thrill of a wellenvied drive - but I never quite recaptured the total glee of running about the country in our airy MG. After our demob I lost contact with Ed. I wonder if he still parades our draughty wee runner with its hard-on- the-bum seats, ripped-off fabric roof but pleasantly harmonic engine. I am more than happy to share my overwhelming admiration for the splendid book and spread its appeal to what I know would be an appreciative readership. Therefore I, kindness personified, will bless a lucky recipient with a prize copy if they come up with the correct answer to my quiz question:

What do the initials MG stand for? Please email your answers and magazine By Ted Macauley area to ros@looklocalmagazie.co.uk before 14/12/18

SURREY READING ALOUD

COMPETITION 2018

Surrey Libraries and Brooklands Radio have been looking for people in Surrey who are brilliant at reading aloud. Help us choose the 2018 winner of the Surrey Reading Aloud competition by listening to each of the entries from our shortlist and voting for your favourite by midnight on Sunday 9 December. Visit www.surreycc. gov.uk/libraries/news-and-events/special-eventsand-competitions or www.brooklandsradio.co.uk to listen and vote. Listening to stories is very relaxing and there are huge benefits throughout our lives of listening to someone reading aloud. Regularly reading aloud to children, even as tiny babies, is the best way to give them a lifelong love of books and reading. Even teenagers, whose reading ability doesn’t match their listening ability until they are nearly 15, benefit from listening to someone reading aloud as this allows them to access stories that are too difficult for them to read themselves. In fact, when asked 80% of teenagers said that they

would still enjoy listening to someone reading aloud. Finally, as adults and into old age, listening to someone reading aloud is not only extremely relaxing but has also been found to improve memory, jog recollection and help with depression. In this way, listening to stories has been shown to be particularly beneficial for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia. So, if listening to these wonderful extracts has given you the desire to listen to more stories then visit your local library and see how we can help. We have regular free rhymetimes and storytimes for babies and children and Weybridge Library also has a popular storytime time for adults on the last Wednesday of every month. All libraries also have audio books for children and adults and as a library member you can also access free e-audio books online. Find out more at www.surreycc.gov.uk/ libraries Finally, tune into Brooklands Radio on 24 December to hear this year’s winner reading aloud a special Christmas Eve story

Inspiration!

RED ALERT In my previous car, an orange light at the bottom right of my dashboard signalled an almost-empty fuel tank – bad news if I’d just got on the motorway. In my current car, there are always little orange lights at the right hand side of the dashboard, even when the tank is full. They merely indicate how much fuel is left. But occasionally, when I notice them, I am still triggered into a default response of Help, I’m running out of fuel. Years ago, a red light on my old laptop warned me that the battery was dying and I needed to plug into the mains immediately – bad news if I was nowhere near a mains socket. So when I stayed with my friend and used her laptop, I was instinctively concerned to see a red light on it. “It’s okay,” she told me, “it just indicates that it’s connected to a power source”. But I never really felt comfortable using her laptop because that red light always made me feel on edge. My outdated reflex reaction had kicked in.

friend might simply be wondering. But if it sounds like your judgmental mother while you were growing up, you might hear something completely different. As we approach Christmas and the time for family gettogethers, it might be a good idea to think about who or what triggers us. What do we usually react to in a way that we end up regretting? What are the flashing red lights that elicit a stressful kneejerk response in us? How are they impacting our daily life and relationships? And as we move towards the New Year we can ask ourselves: Which of these triggers and responses am I tired of replaying? Which ones are no longer serving me? Which ones have I outgrown? And which ones do I want to deal with once and for all and leave behind in 2018? I wish you a happy and peaceful Christmas,

Has anything like that ever happened to you?? It’s easy to understand the triggering effects of physical things. But we can also react to things people say or do without being aware of the real cause of our distress. Sometimes a seemingly innocuous comment can lead to an inappropriately strong internal response to the situation. We can experience anything ranging from mild anxiety to a sense of panic or rage, and then wonder why! Maybe we’re not really reacting to the current situation at all, but to something from the past? “Are you sure about that?” might be a simple curious question from a colleague. But it can come across as something much more insulting if it reminds you of your ex-wife’s constant doubting of your memory. “Are you wearing that dress to the party tonight?” your
