I decided last year, that I would get all my all Christmas shopping done by 1st December this year, needless to say, that didn’t happen! And thus far, I haven’t actually started! Busy month ahead it seems! This is, of course, traditionally a month filled with lots of lovely local events; we have a good selection included within our pages so I hope you find something of interest. One of my favourite being ‘Glow 2019’ at RHS Wisley Gardens. This event promises to dazzle you with giant botanical inspired light installations. The enchanting trail is themed around the four seasons and should provide a wonderful winter outing. I am hoping to visit myself at some point in December, tickets are selling fast so I’d recommend that you book sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment. See page 18 for details. Wishing you all a wonderfully festive month, we will be back in the new year as we enter our sixteenth year in print!

“When I knew we were going to be resettled in the UK I felt like I could relax for the first time. My daughters would have a future and be safe.” The global refugee crisis is the most significant humanitarian crisis of our generation. More than 65.3 million people are displaced worldwide. Millions of these refugees are Syrian families, forced to flee their homes during 8 years of war. Many end up in refugee camps with little hope for their families’ future. Abdul lived in a refugee camp in Jordan with his family before being resettled to the UK last year. “We had quite a few problems in Jordan,” he explains. “It was hard to have a life there.” He came to the UK with his wife and three daughters (aged 7, 11 and 13) under the Government’s Syrian Vulnerable Person Resettlement scheme (SVPR) and was settled in Elmbridge. “[When we got here] it immediately felt safe, quiet and peaceful. Our neighbours are very kind, and people have been good to us.” Elmbridge CAN is a local charity working with the Council to resettle refugee families in the community. We help find properties. We furnish homes and we provide ongoing support to the families through our incredible team of volunteers. “When we moved in we needed furniture and [Elmbridge CAN] supported us with this,” says Abdul. “They showed me how to sign up for English

lessons too – although my youngest daughter is fluent now and corrects me all the time! I can definitely say I have friends in Elmbridge CAN now.” Together we’ve supported six families under this scheme and we’re hoping to welcome nine more over the next year. But to do this we need to find suitable homes to rent. “The people the SVPR scheme helps are in a desperate situation,” explains Alex, a local landlord who’s renting a home to one of the families. “This was an opportunity to welcome them into our community here in Molesey and give them some support. We wanted them to feel welcomed.” If you want to help a family like Abdul’s, please visit www.elmbridgecan.org.uk/let-yourproperty to find out how you can support our property appeal. Please note: the names in this story have been changed to protect the identities of the people we support.

Blocked gutters can lead to damp problems and damaged brickwork potentially costing thousands of pounds as debris from trees and excessive moss growth can cause major problems. The build up of muck washed from the roof by rain water, bird droppings, moss and lichen can grow at an alarming rate, even if your property has no trees in the vicinity, hence it is advisable to have your gutters cleared on an annual basis to prevent water damage to your property. A&L Cleaning provide a fast, efficient gutter clearance service for residential properties and commericial buildings throughout Greater London, Surrey, Middlesex and Berkshire.

The button & bows members really excelled themselves with their annual charity coffee event this year. Instead of holding it on a Saturday morning, the club decided to hold the event at their normal club meeting on a Monday afternoon. So their Charity Coffee Afternoon in support of CROHNS & COLITUS was held on Monday 30th September. The afternoon offered ‘Cream Teas’ or ‘Coffee and Cake’, and the opportunity to take part in the ‘Grand Raffle’ all prizes being donated by local businesses. The event was extremely well attended enabling the club to raise a staggering

£1018.08.

Visitors will become enchanted by giant botanicalinspired illuminations as they follow the twinkling trail around the Garden. The creative display will feature an enchanted poinsettia production line that grows these colourful Christmas presents. Due to popular demand a priority booking system will be in place again for 2019, and all visitors must book a time slot in advance of their visit. Glow 2019 opens from 4-8pm (last entry at 7pm) daily between 7 December 2019 and 5 January 2020, excluding 24-26 December 2019 when there will be no Glow event. Special guests arrive at Garsons for Christmas

Garsons of Esher is busy preparing for the arrival of very special visitors on Saturday, November 30 two real reindeer who will be bringing the magic of Christmas to the family-owned garden centre. The majestic creatures will be staying in a purposebuilt, spacious enclosure with cosy stables, and families can visit them right up until Christmas Eve, during Garsons’ opening hours. Storm is a veteran to Garsons and is a `gentle giant’ with an impressive set of antlers, and this year he will be paired with Iceberg, a beautiful reindeer with splashes of white on his nose and small but intricate antlers. Both animals have been rescued from culls in Norway and Sweden and are now looked after by one of Britain’s leading experts, who in turn works with a specialist reindeer vet. Their visit to Garsons has taken weeks of careful planning. Reindeer helpers have been specially trained and have visited the rescue centre in Berkshire to get to know the animals. When Frosty and Glacier arrive, they will have a settling in period before meeting the public and the reindeer helpers will be responsible for their welfare throughout their stay, including taking

them for daily walks, ensuring they have plenty of the right food and making them comfortable. “The reindeer bring the magic of Christmas alive and put a smile on the faces of adults and children alike,” says Ben Thompson, Garsons director. “However, our top priority is always to make sure that these beautiful creatures are carefully looked after. They are given plenty of exercise, the right nutrients and we make sure they have lots of space to move around so they can take time away from visitors if they want to - although they are naturally curious and friendly, and will love to come and say hello to everyone.” While there is no charge to visit the reindeer, this annual tradition will be raising money for Garsons charity of the year, Harrison’s Fund - a local children’s charity raising funds for research into Duchenne, a rare and fatal neuromuscular condition. Collection buckets for donations will be near the reindeer enclosure. For more information about Garsons reindeer and how they enjoy their lives in between visits to the garden centre, visit www.garsons.co.uk Garsons, Winterdown Road, West End, Esher, Surrey KT10 8LS

Safety in the Garden 2 By Selina Botham

Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham continues to looks at issues of safety in the garden. This time looking at water and how to reduce and manage the risks. Water can be a hazard in the garden, from swimming pools to ponds and it’s even possible to drown in just 2cm of water. If you are worried I think it’s best to avoid open water in your garden. Accidents involving water in gardens, whilst terrible, are very rare but we still need to be careful and design out the risks as much as possible. Top designer tips:Swimming Pools should be fenced off from the main areas of the garden with child safety locks and a safety cover. I would always advise against a pool being situated right up next to the house where a fence would not be possible or very unsightly. Pools look beautiful when open on a sunny day, but with the cover on (most of the year) they look less attractive. Water features with open water should be carefully located out of the main routes around the garden so the risks of walking in are reduced. I know this sound obvious but I once visited a garden where the pond was adjacent to the house and you had to creep around it to get into the main garden. Raised ponds are less likely for someone to step in to by mistake, but can be dangerous as children may try to walk around the edge.

Black metal or plastic grates can be used to cover the surface of the water in ponds to reduce risks for children and these can be barely visible if just below the surface. These can be cut to any size or shape too. A raised water bowl is fairly safe but a child may still fall in face first, so even this presents some risk. A temporary cover can be put over the water if needed. Water features with water running down a wall or over a sphere with a covered reservoir are safe (as far as I know). Just make sure the water is treated and well maintained and no one drinks the water! I do hope this doesn’t put you off completely if water is something you really want. Risks can be managed and reduced with good design, but everyone needs to make their own decisions about the risks. Certainly when our children were young we did not have any water features and for us I think this was a good decision as our children loved taking risks. Goodbye Windows 7 On January 14th 2020 Microsoft will officially end extended support of Windows 7. Yes in a matter of days Windows 7 will not receive any software support or updates. But what does this actually mean for you? In very simple terms it means that your Windows 7 device will become less and less useful if you use the device for any internet connected activity. For example if you use the machine for online banking, your bank will stop you gaining access to your online accounts, as they view your computer as being a security risk to their systems. Bit by bit this will become widespread and most online shopping systems will block your ability to carry out transactions with them for the same reason. We are not saying your machine will suddenly stop working on the 14 January. Your files and photos will still be accessible, the machine will power on as before, but you will be at greater risk to security breaches, and your ability to communicate and collaborate with others will be much reduced. What can you do about this? 1: Upgrade the software on your machine to Windows 10 (the worlds most used operating system). This does carry a cost of ÂŁ130 for the software alone, and your machine may not be designed to work efficiently with Windows 10 Or 2: Replace your computer with a new Windows 10 machine. With costs as low as ÂŁ250 for new machines this is probably the most economical route and you get a brand new, up to date machine, with a full warranty. We can transfer all your data from the old to the new machine and ensure the new machine is ready for the years ahead, with minimal disruption for you Beat the rush - act now

COME AND SING CAROLS A small amount of your time can provide a huge benefit to others The Esher & Claygate Car Service drives people without transport to their medical appointments & is always looking for more volunteers to help it with this valuable service. If you can spare as little as an hour or two a month, hold a clean driving licence, have the use of a car, you could help people in your local community. Our volunteers take Esher and Claygate residents, mostly elderly, to medical appointments at GP surgeries, dentists, opticians, physiotherapists, podiatrists and nearby hospitals.

Hugely rewarding and very interesting, if you would like to find out more; Call us on: 07501 029 237 or email us at: ec.carservice@gmail.com

LEXUS RX CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY

It is big in Japan, a top seller in America and it is looking all set to monopolise the fiercely competitive UK market for luxurious and large SUVs. That’s the refurbed, refreshed and reliable Lexus RX; It is a promisingly successful blend of petrol and electric for efficiency and reasonable fuel economy and all achieved in the utmost comfort. Okay, it may be relatively pricey, but for anybody with a few quid to spare and a requirement to enjoy miles of luxurious accompaniment, the RX fits the bill. Lexus, launched by Japanese car moguls Toyota 30-odd years ago and in its fifth generation, is right now, a niche player in the UK market, battling with the respectable likes of the Audi Q7, the Volvo XC90 and the Range Rover Sport, all dominant forces to be reckoned with. Since its arrival on the UK scene in 1990 more than 200,000 RX’s have hit the British market, 16,000 this year - and they aim on its upcoming re-launch early next year to smash their own record. I can see it happening. Such is the obvious care taken by the astute brains behind the scenes and the evidential fine result for their effort. They tell me that since its original launch in 1998, the revolutionary Lexus RX SUV has sold more than three million models. And I’d bet there’s not been one complaint... So what is it like? According to which of its three trim levels you fancy, the RX, F Sport or Takumi, the flexible five or slightly longer seven seater is a whizzbang

goer, huge and sprawlingly comfortable, responsive and sharp, just what you need either for arduous motorway treks or humpy-bumpy twisty rural lanes. And before you settle on a sale, you can specify halfa-dozen stand-alone spacious “captain’s chairs”..two in each row - offering a really commanding driving and viewing position. Furthermore, the clever clogs in the design and planning areas have come up with a crucial safety trim. It is entitled the BladeScan Adaptive High Beam system which offers 24m of extra vision so you can spot potential hazards without it being a blinder to oncoming drivers. And there’s tons of power from the self-charging hybrid set-up. That comprises a 259bhp 3.5 litre direction injection V6 petrol engine working with a front-andback pair of electric motors that will create a pulling power of 308 bhp. I hope that does not sound too technical. The prices will range from £52,705 up to £62,605.... So....What are the RX’s feedback and performance benefits? The five-seater F-Sport, for instance, will propel you from standstill to a respectable 62mph in around 7.7 seconds, topping out at 124 mph. The seven seater is a wee bit slower. No surprise there. No real disappointment or setback either....You would hardly notice. Those rival SUV front runners had better watch out when this flexible new boy joins the fray.

VITAL FUNDING TO HELP IMPROVE THE LIVES OF ELMBRIDGE RESIDENTS Play equipment for a town centre, outdoor play and learning space, extension of a hall for community use and a defibrillator - just some of the recent projects awarded funding through Elmbridge’s Community Infrastructure Fund. The Community Infrastructure Fund (CIL) allows Elmbridge Borough Council to raise funds through borough development to help pay for the physical infrastructure needed to mitigate the impacts of new development. The bulk of the money raised goes towards strategic borough wide schemes such as highway schemes, permanent school expansions or flood works. However, as part of the process, the council also allocates a portion of these funds to be spent locally on smaller infrastructure schemes that are required in the communities where development took place. The council has formed area committees known as Local Spending Boards where local Councillors decide on how these local CIL funds will be allocated. In the case of Claygate, the local proportion of CIL funds will be passed directly to the Parish Council. The definition of infrastructure is broad and includes: • roads and other transport infrastructure • flood defences • schools and other educational facilities • medical facilities • sporting and recreational facilities • open spaces Cllr Karen Randolph, Portfolio Holder for Planning Services is a keen advocate of the CIL process and is delighted that local groups have benefitted from the funding: “In this latest round of CIL funding, it was great to see such a diversity of projects being supported by the council. Working in partnership with schools, charities and other non-profit organisations CIL can provide vital funding to help improve the lives of the people of Elmbridge.” A sample of some of the projects supported through the local CIL funding are listed below: • Sunbury and Walton Sea Cadets building for the future • St James Church of England Primary School toilet and cloakroom upgrade • Cardinal Newman Catholic Primary school hall extension • Patient participation group defibrillator • Hinchley Wood Primary School playground upgrade • Chatterbus ticketing machine upgrade “The CIL funding has made such a big difference and we are hugely appreciative of the support given to us. We are now progressing the training centre project, which will provide an important place for young people across the community”, says Mrs Cramp, Chairman, Sunbury and Walton Sea Cadets The next application period for CIL funding, for 2020-2021, is anticipated to open in February 2020, with the boards being held in June and early July 2020. Please visit https://www.elmbridge.gov.uk/planning/ community-infrastructure-levy-cil-funding for more information.

This Christmas, young wildlife sculptor, Elliot Channer will be exhibiting his latest bronze wildlife sculptures at Esher based gallery, The Art Agency.

As an artist represented by The Art Agency, Elliot will be adding to his pieces already on display by introducing two of his latest bronze sculptures- ‘Fluttering Owl’ and ‘Harvest Mouse’. These pieces will be on display during the Christmas period. Born in 1989 in Staffordshire, Elliot showed a passion for wildlife and art from a young age. Described as one of the ‘young stars’ of the international art fair circuit by Belgravia magazine, he is influenced by the animal sculptures of Rembrandt Bugatti and Antoine- Louis Barye. He focuses on capturing the life and grace of the subject, concentrating on their key features but allowing spontaneity to make up the main body of the sculpture. Largely self-taught, and taking inspiration from the countryside, initially in Staffordshire and Derbyshire, Elliot now travels the country in order to observe and photograph animals in their natural habitat. Alongside lifesize sculptures, he also scales down large animals, creating more manageable pieces.

Focusing his art on British and international wildlife, Elliot’s clay sculptures are then cast in bronze. He works closely with the team of skilled craftsmen at the bronze foundry in Birmingham where his work is cast using the ancient Lost Wax process. Elliot’s work is exhibited across the country and at prestigious venues and art fairs throughout the year. These include the Affordable Art Fairs in London. Each bronze sculpture are signed and limited edition. The Art Agency was launched by Emma Riley and Alison Ramsay as a pop up gallery and opened on Esher High Street in October 2011. Due to an increasingly wide portfolio of artists the gallery moved to larger premises at 118-120 High Street, Esher in 2015. The gallery shows a mixed collection from several featured artists exhibiting original artwork, sculpture and ceramics from an exciting portfolio of contemporary artists in a variety of mediums and price ranges to suit every tastes and budgets.
