SCHOOLS COACHING IN THE COMMUNITY S P O N S O R E D

H

enshaws Estate Agents have been running a series of children’s soccer coaching sessions in local schools in Fetcham, Bookham, Effingham and Horsley. Josh Evans of the Josh Evans Soccer School, who is a full time soccer coach, is being sponsored by Henshaws Estate Agents to go into schools and teach the children football skills. The first session was held at Polesden Lacey Infant School in Bookham last week, where Josh took 60 children for coaching. This was followed up this week by 120 children at St Lawrence Primary School in Effingham. Josh used fun games that interacted with ball skills. Roger Grunsell of Henshaws said “We are

10

B Y

H E N S H A W S

thrilled to be supporting local schools in the community and have been delighted with the response from schools for these free coaching sessions”. Tim Pearce, who is a Director at Henshaws, said “We have had a lot of positive feedback from the schools and are pleased to be able to offer this facility and play a part in the local community.” Each child was presented with a commemorative medal by

Josh after each session and a certificate to mark attending the course. Dates for Oakfield Junior School in Fetcham and The Raleigh School in Horsley have also been set up for these courses, which will bring the total number of children coached to over 540. Due to the overwhelming success of this initiative, Henshaws said they may well consider running events like this again in the future.

Effort

of Will I

sn’t it funny how we get so used to our community that we sometimes forget how special it is? How many times have you driven from Cobham to Fetcham and ignored the little school on the other side of the M25? Well, that little school is, of course, the world-famous Yehudi Menuhin School, arguably the finest music college in the world. Its alumnae include Nigel Kennedy, Nicola Benedetti and a host of wonderful players working with some of the world’s greatest orchestras.

T

his year saw another great feather in the cap for the school when one of its final year students, William Dutton, won the string section of the BBC Young Musician of the Year. And if you have attended St Andrew’s Church over the last few years, you might have seen the young prodigy there, either singing in the choir or astounding everyone with his virtuosity in his many concerts. Will was born in 1995 in Leeds. He asked to play the violin aged 3 and began taking lessons when he was 4. In 2004, his talent was recognised by the Kazakh virtuoso Marat Bisengaliev; he subsequently studied with Marat and his wife Vassilia and then with Raimonda Koço in Leeds. Will was a member of the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain between 2003 and 2008 and was awarded a Leverhulme Trust Scholarship in 2006. In 2008, he gained a place at the Yehudi Menuhin School where he studied with Lutsia Ibragimova. As a pupil of the school, he regularly performed in the school solo and chamber music recitals, most notably last year, leading a performance of Schubert’s C Major Quintet. He led the viola section of the Yehudi Menuhin School Orchestra last summer in the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, Switzerland, playing on Lord Menuhin’s Testore viola. In November 2013, Will led the violins of the YMS orchestra as they toured Holland, giving concerts in The Hague and in Amsterdam, where they accompanied the finalists of the Youri Egorov International Piano Competition. Successes as a soloist have included first place in the Concerto Class and the Annie Forth and Thomas Trophy Classes at the Harrogate Competitive Festival. Will was a soloist in Bach’s Concerto in D Minor for Two Violins with the York Minster Musical Society in York Minster in 2012. In April 2013, he was a guest soloist at the European String Teachers’ Association Conference and has been invited

back to perform again at this year’s national conference. In February 2014, Will performed at the Interlakner Musikfestwochen in Bern, where maestro Vladimir Ashkenazy presented the Yehudi Menuhin School with an award. And of course, the following month he won the coveted BBC Young Musician of the Year 2014 in Cardiff. If all that wasn’t enough, Will also won the BBC Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year in 2006! He has performed with world-class soloists, orchestras, conductors and celebrities, including José Carreras, Alfie Boe, Aled Jones and Ken Dodd. He made his BBC Proms début in July 2007 as a soloist in Fauré’s Requiem with the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales, conducted by Thierry Fischer, and his Welsh Proms début in July 2008 as the Youth in Mendelssohn’s Elijah alongside Bryn Terfel. Will left the school this year and is now preparing to become a professional muscician - a tough career but one he is working hard to achieve. As part of that process, Will has moved to Switzerland to study in the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne with Svetlana Makarova. Whilst it all sounds fabulously exotic, it is not cheap! Will is not from a wealthy background and is finding it hard to pay the £20,000 a year costs of living and learning in one of the world’s most expensive countries. Then he had an idea - why not ask for support using Crowd Funding? He set up a page and is kicking it off on 1 November. So if you fancy supporting Will, & even getting some great presents - CDs, concerts - read the details below & give this lovely, talented guy a hand - he would really appreciate it.

Support Will! If you fancy supporting Will in his career, then go to www.crowdfunding.co.uk and search for William Dutton.Your money will go straight to Will and there is a whole bunch of great gifts he will provide for your help. Thanks from Will!

MICROSOFT’S U P DAT E S & C H A N G E S This year has been quite a year at Microsoft. They retired a wide range of products for both the home and business users and they introduced a variety of new and up-and-coming products. To try and keep you informed with relevant changes, we hope the following is of value to you.

Out with the old: Significant products that have been retired this year include Windows XP, Office 2003 and Microsoft Server 2003. But what does retired mean? The software is no longer updated or supported by Microsoft. As it is aged software, it is more exposed to viruses and internet-borne threats and could be a security risk, exposing your machine, data and all devices to infiltration by remote users. What should you do if you are using any of these products? In short, stop using it and upgrade to a more secure platform.

In with the new: Windows 8 was released in December 2012 (with Windows 8.1 being released in February 2014). Its design and layout caught some users offguard; this often overshadowed its major advantages of increased security, improved performance, faster boot times and greater reliability. In our experience, people really liked it and could become productive very quickly with Windows 8.1. To ease the transition, we have recommended the use of a free-of-charge utility called Classic Shell from www.classicshell.net. This returns the start button which was removed from the initial version of Windows 8.0, and provides a familiar Windows 7 type interface. We have also seen the sales of Windows 7 machines remain very strong, and we expect this to continue, as a lot of companies prefer to work with standard products across their entire fleet. Microsoft recently announced its replacement to Windows 8, named Windows 10. Windows 10 is due to hit the streets in Spring 2015. It is going to be a mixture of Windows 7 and Windows 8, meaning it has the start bar, with programs and tiles being available off this start bar. More to follow on this, but it is being rumoured that any Windows 8 machine purchased now will be entitled to a free-of-charge upgrade to Windows 10 when it finally ships. The other significant development about Windows 10 is that the updates and upgrades are likely to be supplied on a subscription directly from Microsoft. More to follow as the options unfold‌

PESTO , PRAWN & COURGETTE F E T T U C C I N I FO R TH E P ESTO : 70g/5 ½ oz macadamia nuts

I NG REDIENTS: 300g/11 oz frozen giant peeled prawns - defrosted 4 medium courgettes (approx 1 kg/2 lbs total weight) Sea salt & freshly ground black pepper

METHO D

1 small bunch fresh coriander 1 clove garlic, crushed 120ml/4 floz extra-virgin olive oil Sea salt & freshly ground black pepper

1. Make the pesto: put the macadamia nuts, coriander, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper into a food processor. Whizz until smooth. 2. De-vein the prawns by cutting down the back of the prawn and removing the narrow black tube - if you can’t see it, you don’t need to do it! 3. Place a steamer basket over a large pan filled with about 2.5cm/1 in water. Bring the water to the boil. 4. Run a julienne peeler or vegetable peeler along each side of the courgettes until you reach the central seedy part, which you leave. Place the courgette strips into the steamer, cover with a lid and steam for about 2 minutes. 5. Remove the lid, toss them over, then continue steaming them for a further minute. Tip the courgette into a colander and cover with a lid for a moment. 6. Put the prawns into the steamer, cover with a lid and steam for about 3 minutes or until pink all the way through. 7. Put the courgettes, prawns and pesto into a large bowl, toss together, check seasoning and pile into warmed serving dishes. Serve immediately.

The hot, and I do mean HOT, Majorca sunshine took over where the cool silvery moon had left off and its beams pinpointed a view, centred eye-catchingly in the shadows of the spectacular Tramuntana mountains backdrop. Sheer joy. A sight to behold. A black beauty. My borrowed Porsche 911 Cabriolet. It was not only a welcome means of escape from the rather dreary hotel I had booked into - and, despite my obvious able-bodiedness, had been allotted the disabled guest’s room - it was a parade of a car on an island of show-offery. And neither I nor Trophy Wife fret about being stared at in an atmosphere of the utter envy of bystanders. Posche does not mess about or stint on style when there is really big money to be gained for a return of sheer excellence on the move, at a breathtaking, but safe, speed. This charismatic rag-top cabrio-cousin to the coupe, one of the world’s truly eminent sports cars, is a gift to sun-worshippers like me and TW who revel in breeze-in-the-

hair driving. Its behaviour and hard-grip road holding, fitting of such a painstakingly developed example of automotive genius, were immaculate whatever pressures I applied, either on the sharp mountain turns or on the straighter, slightly faster runs to the capital, Palma. There is so little tyre noise and if you opted for the spec, as on our car, of adapative dampers at extra cost, the ride becomes pleasant and compliant. With the roof down, you could be plunging into a gale and it would not disturb the calm of a cleverly designed cockpit that even has an electric roller-blind breeze-blocker behind the front seats, so that you don’t have to fiddle to put it up. And the seat heaters...wow...are a treat of bum-warming that keep you fire-

sidedly comfy and cosy, even with the top tucked away and the chilliest air striving to invade. With the kiddyseats in the back and a generously spaced boot upfront, the cabrio lives up to its deserved reputation as one of the most practical of sports cars. It certainly gives the likes of its rivals, the Audi R8 Spyder, the Mercedes SL and the Jaguar XKR, a good run for their money and performance levels. The entry level £83,000, which can be easily upped on the add-ons, appears trifling in comparison as the most economical and lowest-emitting of them all. As a final tribute to Porsche’s enlightenment, I cite the roof. They have redesigned it and sandwiched magnesium panels into the fabric, so that when the roof is up, it is effectively a hard top. Whatever words of praise I may summon up, I feel they fall well short of the reality which may only be discerned by getting behind the wheel for a spin to thrill. The perfect getaway car from a dreary holiday stopover.

GARDENING MATTERS And here we are in November already, nooooooo. Winter is definitely not my favourite season, so I’m going to pretend it isn’t happening. Let’s continue with the naming of plants, this time plants which have been given names that indicate their resemblance to a different plant, maybe one which is better known. Sometimes, this may simply be a generalisation, such as arboreus, which means ‘tree-like’, as in Lupinus arboreus, the tree lupin. There is also gramineus, meaning ‘grass-like’, as in Ranunculus gramineus, the buttercup whose foliage has long, slender, grass-like leaves; also bryoides, or ‘moss-like’, as in Saxifraga bryoides, a mossy saxifrage. The leaves can play an important part in the naming process. The suffix ‘-folius’ indicates a type of leaf, so quercifolius refers to oak-like leaves, ‘quercus’ being the Latin for ‘oak’. Erigeron quercifolius, a flowering annual of the aster family is an example of this, its leaves resembling the leaves of an oak tree. ‘Salix’, the Latin for ‘willow’, gives us salicifolius, as in Cotoneaster salicifolius, a cotoneaster with thin, narrow, willow-like foliage. Even the roots of a plant are comparable: napellus means ‘turniplike’, and is found in the name of Aconitum napellus, a perennial with tuberous roots resembling a turnip. In addition, the fragrance is often compared to another plant: Thymus citriodorus is a lemon-scented thyme, the name easily recognisable from our word ‘citrus’.

The immediate appearance of a plant is reflected in names such as Muscari botryoides, where the last part means ‘grape-like’. The common name for muscari is ‘grape hyacinth’ and it is easy to see why: the teeny little blue flowers look like a miniature bunch of grapes. And pomifera, meaning ‘bearing apples’ features in the name of a rose, Rosa pomifera, whose hips are apple-shaped. But in many other cases, the comparison is with another plant. Jasminoides means ‘jasmine-like’, examples of which are Solanum jasminoides and Trachelospermum jasminoides, both of which have very fragrant white flowers like a jasmine. Primuloides, meaning ‘primula-like’, is found in the names of Mimulus promuloides, whose flowers look a little like primulas, maybe because of the yellow (ewww), and Saxifraga primuloides (London Pride), whose scalloped leaves are shaped like the leaves of the primula (although they are shiny, not hairy). Other direct plant comparisons are found in plants with names including iodes (like a violet), ferulaceum (like fennel), hederaceus (like ivy) and horminoides (like clary). Plants named after plants. And why not? Next month, time to step back a few paces and consider prefixes, and maybe suffixes if space allows. And if not, yaaaaay, I have another month’s material. PS if you are having bonfires on November 5th, please check for hedgehogs, and cats too.

MUSIC MATTERS So are the 80s the new 60s? I’m often asked which my favourite era in pop is, and for many years, I would automatically say ‘the 60s’, mainly because I became a pop fan in that decade & also because music was such an important part of youth culture. The 60s were also a breakthrough time for British acts in America. Having recently hosted a couple of big 80s themed parties, I’m now wondering if it isn’t time to evaluate the importance & enjoyment of the most colourful decade in pop. The 60s were revolutionary, the 70s were eclectic, having started with introspective guitarstrumming singer-songwriters & ending with the punks whose purpose was to shake up the scene & chase away the remnants of hippie culture. The 80s though were something else. I have fond memories of presenting Top of the Pops, when each episode was like hosting a big party. The decade saw the birth of MTV which meant that image was just as important as the music. Music & fashion mixed like never before. Superstars such as Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Madonna & Prince emerged to embrace the new MTV generation, while producing some of the most enduring music of all time. George Michael, David Bowie, Annie Lennox, Boy George & Duran Duran became as popular in the US as they were in the UK. CDs, Walkmans, cassettes & boom boxes also gave us new ways of accessing the hits. I began the decade hosting Top of the Pops & ended it hosting The Network Chart, so I was in the enviable position of seeing the new trends evolve & mixing with the personalities who were most successful in the 80s. So, for me, while video didn’t actually kill the radio star, it was certainly a big game changer!

MEDICAL MATTERS!!

DIABETES A N D M E D I C AT I O N This is quite a minefield for patient & professional alike. Clinical trials bring new evidence, changing guidelines which in theory should deliver better care to patients. Many medications used in diabetes care have multiple benefits & ideally should be considered sooner rather than later, as prevention of complications in diabetes is key. Anyone with diabetes over the age of 40 should consider statin therapy. They get a bad press, but current evidence is robust that they reduce cholesterol levels & also reduce risk of heart disease. Blood pressure is also an important element in diabetes requiring good control. A group of tablets called ACE inhibitors (ramipril, enalapril, lisinopril) work well to achieve this, while also helping maintain healthy kidney function. There are now many different tablets used to control blood sugar levels. Some have been around for over 60 years, while others are very new to the market. Metformin is the mainstay first-line treatment in diabetes management. It works well, reduces appetite & helps the body use its own insulin better. It is used as long as it is tolerated & kidney function is good. Gliclazide also has been around a long time. It seems now though to be being superseded by other, newer medications. It works by stimulating the pancreas to make more insulin & may cause problems with hunger, weight gain and low blood sugars (hypos). Newer drugs are now being welcomed, as more data is being collected as to the effectiveness of these drugs. If you feel your blood sugars control could be better, why not discuss your medication options with your GP or practice nurse?

Jacky Ollington is a practice nurse based in Essex & an independent prescriber.

BOOKHAM’S NEIGHBOURHOOD FORUM:

PREPARE FOR 2016 REFERENDUM The preparation of the Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) for Bookham continues. The Forum’s timetable for producing the NDP is dictated by Mole Valley’s Housing and Traveller Sites Plan (HTSP). Until Mole Valley District Council meets in January 2015, we shall not know what sites, if any, are proposed to be released from the Green Belt in Bookham. So, for now, the Forum is concentrating on preparing policies which can apply within the current built-up area of Bookham (not in the Green Belt), and will take into account what comes out of the HTSP planning process in January 2015. The aim is to produce a draft plan and take into account the feedback from the community during 2015, before putting it forward for examination and finally voting on the agreed final plan in a community referendum in May 2016. The Forum will spend its next meeting listening to proposals for policies to include in the draft plan and will provide feedback before the policies are firmed up. Once the draft plan is written, the whole community will be able to comment on it in early 2015. The recently advertised October public event, originally planned to launch the draft plan, has been postponed, so please look out for the new plan launch date which will be advertised online and widely around Bookham early in 2015. The next Forum meeting will also see the election of a new Chair. Lucy Botting, the retiring Chair, was elected as a district councillor for Bookham North earlier this year. Due to potential conflicts of interest in the two roles, Lucy has reluctantly resigned her Neighbourhood Forum role as Chair but remains as a member of the Forum. As well as preparing policies for the NDP, members of the Forum and Task Force (Forum working groups) have found time to comment on the Guildford Borough Draft Local Plan as it affects Bookham. To see these comments and keep up to date with the latest news from the Neighbourhood Forum, please visit the website. join us on Twitter or Facebook or get in touch to sign up for the regular newsletter.

Bookham High Street Consultation At the Mole Valley District Council / Surrey County Council Local Committee on Wednesday 10th September, the recent Bookham High Street consultation was discussed and it was agreed that a new design incorporating just two tables and a reduction of the lengths of the existing yellow lines to enable three passing places will now be proposed by SCC Highways. Also, advisory notices for HGV traffic, suggesting that the High Street is unsuitable for these types of vehicles, should be erected. In addition, consideration should be given to a third phase, with a complementary plan for Church Road, Bookham. A further consultation on these revised plans will take place in December with the local High Street businesses and residents, Surrey Police and the BRA.

SURREY POLICE NOTICE

Neil Clar ke, 13363 Neighbourhood Team Co-ordinator

W

DISTRACTION BURGLARY

ith winter approaching, opportunist rogue traders see a good opportunity to take advantage of people’s vulnerabilities and the desire to have their homes safe, secure and watertight for the coming colder months. Surrey Police continues to work alongside a number of partner agencies, developing initiatives to help all members of our communities be and feel safe in their own homes. As part of this ongoing work, your Neighbourhood Teams are focusing particular attention on providing guidance, support and awareness to members of the community on how to spot and deal with cold callers, rogue traders and distraction burglars. You should know, however, that you have a right to refuse to deal with anyone who comes to your door uninvited. You can always refuse to answer if you have any concerns about the caller. If you have a door chain and do intend to answer the door, then put the chain across before opening the door. We would not recommend that you agree for any work to be done without checking that the business offering this service is totally legitimate and reputable. Many areas have directories for businesses that have received positive customer feedback. Also, Trading Standards and Consumer Direct can offer advice on businesses and service providers who should be trustworthy, reliable and who will carry out work for a reasonable price. In many cases,

nothing can beat personal recommendation. It is never a good idea to allow someone you don’t know to carry out work for you. They may not be qualified or competent to do the work, and what may sound like a cheap price could turn out to be an expensive choice, particularly if you end up paying out again to have bad work put right! Additionally, distraction burglaries can be particularly upsetting, as they prey on people’s trust in authority: for example, a person may call, saying that they are from a utility company, calling to check on reports of “faulty” water pipes, gas leaks or problems with the electricity supply. Once they gain entry, they will distract the resident by asking them to keep an eye on a tap or meter, while others go elsewhere in the house to “carry out checks”. Many people have been distressed to find they have had money, bank cards, jewellery or other items taken in just a few moments. Please insist on seeing appropriate identification for anyone claiming to be from a utility company. You can also telephone the company to find out if they are operating in the area. In fact, even if a uniformed police officer calls at your door, they will be perfectly happy for you to ask to see their warrant card to identify themselves, or you can even phone us on 101 to confirm an officer’s details to your satisfaction. Finally, if you are ever put in a position of feeling in any way vulnerable or frightened by unwanted callers, please call the police on 999.

Rainbow Riot was the theme of this year’s Holiday Club and it certainly lived up to its name. Rainbow colours shone out from the start, as 70 or so children from the local area entered the world of Potts Paint Factory. The escapades of Splodge and Splash (Tracey Gillard and Joy Lord) gave us all plenty of laughter as they grappled with their curious paint-mixing machine. As it splurged and spluttered along, there were some magnificent results, including, by the end of the week, a striped rainbow colour of paint! None of it would have been possible, of course, without the guidance of their eccentric manager, the colourful Mr Potts (otherwise known to us as the Rector)! What also brought the Old Barn Hall alive, of course, was the enthusiastic participation of

R I O T !

the children who attended each day. We had escapades from a rather confused rescue team called the Colour Squad (who believed Mr Potts was locked in his potting shed!), and various extra fun moments when we all joined in with some keep fit, singing and joke-telling. There was certainly a great atmosphere. There was also time for some important thinking about God. Splash and Splodge had received a Bible and shared with us what happened at Creation. We heard about the rainbow in the story of Noah,

which means God will always be there for us. And Dan the Delivery Man recalled for us each day someone he knew from his delivery rounds who had been at important Bible events, such as the boy David who defeated Goliath, a woman who was healed and others who had heard Jesus teaching us to pray. The week finished with a service at St Nicolas Church on Sunday afternoon to bring all our stories to a close and we enjoyed a well-earned barbeque in the garden of the Pastoral Centre. For those of us new to the Holiday Club experience, it was a delight that sent us home each day with a smile, if not a little exhaustion! Who to thank for this event? Jackie Kennedy arranged and oversaw the whole event and Sue Lawrence provided some wonderful script writing. Look out for the photos in the church, but as a health warning, only if you can handle the vibrant colours! Rev David Sigsworth, Curate at St Nicolas Church
