Anyone who enjoyed a UK holiday this year must be very happy. The British countryside & coastline certainly takes some beating doesn’t it. In this issue we are delighted to share plenty of great events for you to look forward to over the coming months; Amanda Fashions (see opposite for details) are preparing for another popular Fashion Show event, we look forward to covering this for you again. It’s a fun night out, and very well organised, with proceeds going to the Mole Valley Citizens Advice Charity. Fetcham United Charities run the Reading Rooms and the Fetcham Almshouses; they are celebrating their centenary this year. Do take a look at pages 62/63 to find out more; you may even be tempted to join them on 8th September, when refreshments will be available. As you may already be aware, Ashlea Medical Centre, in Ashtead, out of several hundred Patient Participation Groups in England, won the National PPG of the Year Award 2017. The PPG Committee thought long and hard on how best to use the prize and they decided to invest the money back into the community by holding a Family Health Day on Saturday 8th September, at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, from 10am to 3pm. Open to all, the event will also celebrate the 110th birthday of the AshLea Medical Practice and the 70th birthday of the NHS. What a fantastic accolade, and a great way to use the prize money! Do take a look at page 42 for your invitation to attend! The call for family law reform

Reform is currently the buzz word in family law, and has been proposed, debated and urged upon Parliament in the areas of fault based divorce; cohabitation and also the presumption of shared parenting. But with government focus necessarily being on Brexit, the prospect of Parliamentary reforms have receded, although the social imperative remains. Surprisingly, perhaps, the divorce rate, which is currently 42% (Source: www.ons.gov.uk), is similar to that in the mid 1970s, from when the current Matrimonial Causes Act dates, and lower than its peak in the 1980s and 1990s. This is largely because there are fewer marriages, per head of the population, with more couples choosing to cohabit. 21% of families with dependent children are now unmarried. Whatever form the modern family takes, however, the UK has, unfortunately, the highest rate of family instability in the developed world. The volume and range of litigation coming before the higher Family Courts demonstrates the need for new legislative framework. This has been starkly, and very recently, highlighted by the Supreme Court in delivering their judgment on 25 July 2018 in the case of Owens v Owens. In dismissing Mrs Owens’ appeal against earlier court rulings that allegations in her divorce petition of unreasonable behaviour were ‘at best flimsy’, the Supreme Court stated that they were doing so ‘with reluctance’ but their ‘uneasy feelings… are of no consequence to this court’. The role of the courts should be to update and refine the law by decided cases (precedents), but it cannot fulfil the role of Parliament in adapting legislation to rapidly changing social times. A recent report by the Nuffield Foundation stated that there is already divorce by consent or “on demand” but which has to be dressed up to fit the legal requirement that there should be evidence of adultery or unreasonable behaviour, if not two years’ separation. Indeed, it had often been said, pre the decision in Owens, that the legal “bar”

for unreasonable behaviour is set so low that generally it can be found on both sides of most marriages! Resolution, the solicitors family law organisation, in supporting a Private Members Bill proposed by Baroness Butler-Sloss to reform divorce law, have revealed that since 1996, 1.7 million people have cited adultery or unreasonable behaviour in their divorce petition, many of whom had not wished, or needed, to do so. Sir James Munby, President of the Family Division, has called for reforms as a means of introducing “intellectual honesty” to the situation and to absolve the District Judges from “the ritual of considering whether the anaemic allegations contained in the petition drafted… do or do not amount to unreasonable behaviour”. There is also support for abolishing the requirement for two years’ separation. Arguably, such reform would not necessarily weaken the institution of marriage if combined with support for couples in times of difficulties. Research by the Marriage Foundation shows that unhappy couples who stay together are as likely to be happy ten years later as those who separate. Lack of clarity, and judicial consistency on the thorny issue of life-time spousal maintenance obligations has led to unnecessary, and often costly, variation and maintenance applications. Thankfully, greater certainty (and some relief for payers) was provided by the Court of Appeal in April 2018 in its decision in the case of Waggott v Waggott. Family law should be reflective of social values and realities, and not lag behind by decades. These are legal issues that affect the lives of many ordinary citizens.

This month, our theme is “Connections”. People enjoy life in Ashtead because of the many interconnected groups and networks. Neighbours interact and help each other; organisations such as the Residents’ Association, Ashtead Good Neighbours and the churches all work for the good of the community, as do so many others. Two years ago, Ashtead Tree Wardens (ATW) were formed and their work in Ashtead includes reviewing Planning Applications involving trees, planting new trees in verges and pruning low growth from street trees, which may be obstructing sight lines or pathways. Alongside the work they do locally, the wardens are seeing that their role is wider as members of the national network of tree wardens. Tree Wardens are volunteers under the umbrella of The Tree Council, which has contributed to the Treecharter.uk, a green wish list of 10 principles, co-ordinated by The Woodland Trust. There are so many opportunities linked to conservation and planting projects and, of course, contributing through donating and leaving legacies. There is also an educational role in teaching children to understand the importance of trees in maintaining the health of the planet, locking up carbon and biodiversity. In addition, there is a requirement for vigilance in observing and reporting invasive pests and diseases, which damage trees or weaken them to such an extent that they have to be felled. It is important that infections and pests are not imported so do resist the temptation to bring back a sprig of this or that from overseas, which may carry a pathogen or pest. There is a fascinating, but frightening story, which you can read at www.telegraph.co.uk/news/earth/ earthnews/9704055 in which Dr Joan Webber of the Forestry Commission lists all of the threats to our trees: we urge you to read it to see the extent of the problem.

One example of a threat is ash dieback, a fungal condition, which will result in the loss of millions of trees, with a huge financial cost, as well as the biomass loss and researchers are keen to monitor the speed of deterioration. You can contribute to the research by taking a photo now of a mature ash tree, set against the skyline so that the canopy is well outlined, then another in 3 months and a third photo when it comes into leaf next year. Please send your photos to the tree wardens email below for forwarding. HEDGEHOGs: the lack of connections. Hedgehog numbers are estimated to have plummeted to less than a million but an accurate count is difficult. They travel a mile a night to forage for food but our impenetrable garden fences stop them travelling from garden to garden: please do consider putting a tunnel, a pipe, or cutting a hole of 13cm x 13cm (5 inches)) so that hedgehogs can pass under. Also, don’t be too tidy: leave rough piles of leaves, twigs and grass cuttings under shrubs and hedges where worms and slugs will gather and provide a perfect supper. This might also provide somewhere for winter hibernation; there are marvellous Homes for Hogs on line, but it is fairly simple to make a suitable house. Finally, please avoid slug pellets containing metaldehyde: poisoned slugs will also poison the thrushes and hedgehogs that eat them. If there is no alternative to pellets, use those containing ferric sulphate instead, but as sparingly as possible. hedgehogstreet.org is a delightful website with more information. POTHOLE PETITION - The battle continues to repair our roads. As reported here last month there’s a petition you can sign urging government to reconsider its formula for allocating funds. Following the severe winter, Surrey was given £1.8m, but some other counties received a lot more. At the time of writing the number of online signatures had reached more than 6,400. At 10,000 signatures the government will have to respond. At 100,000 signatures the petition will be considered for debate in Parliament. Fascinating Choices on LOCAL HISTORY FOR HERITAGE WEEKEND

Leatherhead & District Local History Society is gearing up for this year’s Heritage Weekend on 15 and 16 September with a full programme of events. The Society owns and runs Leatherhead Museum at Hampton Cottage in Church Street and will have a special Sunday opening on 16 September from 10am-4pm as well the normal Saturday opening (same times). This year’s exhibitions cover the centenaries of the end of World War 1 and the introduction of votes for women, as well as a display on the brilliant but short-lived Ashtead Pottery firm. Four special events over the weekend are also being promoted by the Society. On Saturday, 15 September, 9am-5pm, at Manor Farm Tithe Barn, Manor House Lane, Little Bookham, Society member Vivien White will be promoting her new book Little Bookham in World War 1 as part of a general exhibition on our local villages and the Great War. At 4500 ft2, the 15th century Grade 2 listed Tithe Barn is one of the largest in Surrey. Its own history will also be displayed. Also on Saturday at 11am in the Leatherhead Institute, Leatherhead Museum curator Lorraine Spindler will be talking about The Women of Leatherhead: Suffrage and Struggle 1850-1950. How did local women help to achieve the vote in 1918? A collection of oral interviews, photographs and newspaper accounts will be used to show how education, war, romance, household responsibilities,

religion and entertainment all evolved, enabling women to come out from the shadows by the end of World War 2. Also on Saturday at 2pm in the Pastoral Centre, St Nicolas Parish Church, Great Bookham, local historian Judith Witter will tell the tale of Mary Chrystie (1838-1911), Benefactor, Property Developer and Temperance Activist, one of the district’s most remarkable women whose activities and development of property made a major contribution to the appearance of the local villages we still know today. Finally, on Sunday, 16 September at 3pm in the Letherhead Institute, Manor Theatre Group, an amateur company from Horsham, will perform Keep the Homefires Burning, a poignant drama about love and loss commemorating World War 1. Reviewed by the National Operatic and Dramatic Association as ‘an exceptional production’, it tells the interweaving story of men in the trenches, nurses in the field hospitals, and the loved ones left behind. YOUTH TRIP - ROMANIA 2018

This summer LYP took a team of 8 young people from Leatherhead and Bookham to Romania to run summer activities for children in the gypsy village of Soard! The team had a packed week that included lake swimming, football, hairdressing, making jewellery and flower crowns, a trip to the zoo, and helping with the weekly feeding programme! The whole team got really involved, making the activities super fun for everyone and building some great friendships along the way. Here is what 2 of our team had to say: Nathan Jago – 17 I was unsure if I wanted to go on the Romania trip as it was really out of my comfort zone. When we first arrived, I thought that the country was

beautiful, and then going to the Gypsy village, I realised how lucky I was. My highlight was helping with the feeding program which was set up out there to give kids one staple meal a day. It was fun helping prep some of the food. I’m looking forward to going on a similar trip again where I get to support others. Mary-Jean Giles – 17 Before going to Romania I was told about the poverty but was really taken aback when we arrived in the Roma gypsy village. I can’t believe that people live in those conditions! A highlight for me was spending time with the kids in the village, it was great to see how happy some kids are even when they live in difficult conditions.

I have several clients at the moment who are writing their own memoirs but are in need of a bit of mentoring support. Have you ever thought of writing yours? Have you hit that ‘Life Story Brick Wall?’

If you’ve already started writing your life story, the first thing I would say is, well done! Well done for wanting to get your family memories written down. Your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will certainly thank you for it. We live in a modern and hectic digital world, where photos remain on phones and emails and texts are sent instead of precious treasured letters. Capturing social, domestic and family history is really important. It won’t be long before there are no memories of a world without Google! Here are five very quick suggestions to keep you on track with getting those memories written down. A good way to start is to get a large piece of paper and create a mind map. A mind map is a diagram with interconnecting

Writing can be tough. There’s nothing more daunting than staring at a blank screen or pristine piece of paper. Where do you start? Will you remember everything correctly? What will people think when they read it? Will your life story be boring? Sometimes, an initial burst of enthusiasm leads to a few carefully written pages that are soon abandoned at the back of a drawer or filed away on an old laptop. Often the task seems overwhelming.

lines and words. Put your name in the middle of the page and just get creative. Use different coloured pens and put down headings and thoughts about your life. Go through old letters, photos and other bits and pieces that you’ve kept. It doesn’t have to be neat and tidy. Just have fun with it and one memory will lead to another. Once you start, don’t be frightened of being wrong. Just write! You can edit it afterwards. If you’re writing your story on a computer, make sure that all the documents are clearly labelled and stored in one folder. Also, don’t forget to back up onto a hard drive or memory stick, just so you have them if your computer crashes. Your life story is very precious! Print out your work and read it in hard copy form. It’s much easier to understand the structure of what you’ve written and you can be more objective. It’s also easier to proof read. I know this sounds obvious but, if you’re writing by hand, try very hard to make your words clear and legible. You don’t want to go to all that effort only to find that your family can’t read it! The Arts Society Ashtead continues to thrive, with around 200 members regularly attending our ever popular monthly lectures on a wide range of arts subjects (3rd Tuesdays, doors open at 09.30 for coffee). We have also enjoyed four exciting day visits, namely to Woburn Abbey, Romney Marsh historic churches, Sissinghurst and Tudeley Church, and Knole . Fifty members enjoyed our 3 day tour to Bath, Wells, and Bristol, and a 5 day tour to Glasgow and Edinburgh will take place in September. Trips to Lincolnshire and to Vienna are planned for 2019. To mark the 50th anniversary of The Arts Society nationally, we will be staging a memberâ€™s Arts and Crafts Exhibition in the Ralli room on Tuesday 20th November. Although open to all, the event will also celebrate the 110th birthday of the AshLea Medical Practice and the 70th birthday of the NHS. Various charities and organisations such as British Red Cross, Mid-Surrey Dementia Trust, Age Concern, Prostate UK, a local Pharmacy, Mole Valley Volunteers, Dyscover and many more have accepted an invitation to attend. We hope that any questions you may have about general health,

The British Red Cross will be bringing an emergency vehicle and demonstrating basic first aid. As well as a blood pressure machine, there will also be a Smoothie Bike. What, you may ask? It’s a fun way of making a fruit or vegetable smoothie by peddling like mad with a delicious, healthy result at the end! If that sounds too energetic, we will be offering “healthy” refreshments - using less sugar and fat along with a recipe or two to take home. Our Family Health Day, at Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, Woodfield Lane, is open to all residents of Ashtead and Leatherhead and we really do hope to see as many people as possible to support the volunteers taking part on the day. NHS Surrey Downs Clinical Commissioning Group (the organisation responsible for planning and buying local healthcare) is working closely with Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust and Sutton and Merton CCGs to address a number of challenges the trust is facing and explore possible solutions. These challenges include the trustâ€™s ability to meet some clinical standards due to national consultant shortages and recruitment issues, estates issues linked to old buildings, and ongoing financial challenges, which all need to be addressed. This programme is known as Improving Healthcare Together and in July and August a number of events took place across Surrey Downs, Sutton and Merton, where people could hear about the challenges in more detail and give their views. This was the first in a

series of engagement events, and further meetings are taking place in September in the Surrey Downs area. Dates and venues will be advertised on the Improving Healthcare Together website at www. improvinghealthcaretogether.org.uk so if you would like to find out more, please come along. You can also read more about the programme and give your feedback online. Epsom and St Helier Trust is exploring the sale of a small amount of land on the Epsom Hospital site, where this is no longer needed, to fund maintenance and improvements to other parts of the hospital. However, this would not impact on any of the potential site solutions which may be considered in the Improving Healthcare Together 2020-2030 programme.

Fetcham United Charities, which runs the Reading Room and the Fetcham Almshouses, celebrates its centenary this year. To mark the occasion, the Almshouse gardens and the Reading Room will be open to visitors on the afternoon of Saturday September 8th – the first of two national heritage weekends. You may have driven past their buildings on the way from Fetcham to Cobham. The Reading Room is the first building on your left immediately after the railway bridge. The Almshouses are opposite, on the corner with River Lane. Although the charity in its current ‘united’ form was founded in 1918, its origins go back to the seventeenth century with the founding of the local Henry Smith Charity in 1627 and the George Shiers Charity in 1685. These charities provided support to single women, local boys wishing to become apprentices, and to the poor of the village. Other charities funded the building of almshouses for local people in need. In total five charities combined one hundred years ago to form Fetcham United Charities. Run by volunteer trustees, mainly appointed by St Mary’s Church and Mole Valley District Council,

the charity ensures that the Almshouses and Reading Room continue to provide a benefit to local people. If you visit the porch of St Mary’s church, you can see the large stone which records the founding of the George Shiers Charity. Sir George was ‘Lord of Slyfield Manor’ near Stoke D’Abernon. The Almshouses Over the centuries, almshouses have provided an early form of social housing throughout England. There are almshouses in many Surrey towns and villages, including Ashtead, Bookham and Leatherhead. The original Fetcham almshouses were located near the far end of Kennel Lane by a chalk pit. The residents were allowed to sell chalk to help support themselves. However, in the early 1800s, four new almshouses were built on the site of the Reading Room - with living quarters on the ground floor and sleeping quarters upstairs. They housed families as well as the elderly. By the 1880s, these almshouses had fallen into disrepair and needed to be replaced. Using local donations, five small almshouses were built in the ‘Abbottsfield’ opposite. The accommodation was

cramped and basic. There was no running water and residents had to use an outside bathhouse situated at what is now the end of Monks Green. By the second half of the 20th century, these Victorian almshouses clearly needed updating. There was also the opportunity to create new homes through the building of a modern block of flats. Using existing funds and a loan, both these major works were carried out in the 1980s. Renamed ‘Morley Court’ after Eileen Morley - the Chair of Trustees who made it all happen - the old and new blocks can be seen in the attractive garden opposite the Reading Room. Eileen was later awarded an MBE for her ‘services to Fetcham’. Morley Court now comprises of ten selfcontained flats providing social housing for single retired persons with local connections. Conveniently situated for the Fetcham shops, some residents have enjoyed living there for over twenty years. The Reading Room In the 1880s, rather than simply demolishing the old almshouses, the charities decided to turn three of them into Fetcham’s first village hall with the fourth serving as a home for a caretaker. The funds

to do this were generated by selling a strip of land to the company that was building the railway line to Guildford. The hall became known as the ‘Reading Room’ because one of its main uses was as a place where local educated ladies were able to read the papers to less fortunate, illiterate, villagers. In the 1980s the Reading Room was substantially renovated. The Caretaker’s House became the kitchen and hall toilets, a new room was added at the back of the main hall, and the garden was landscaped to provide more attractive surroundings. The Reading Room continues to provide a weekly meeting venue for local groups and is available for hire by local residents for family events such as children’s parties. Local charity Happy Child International celebrates 25 years of reaching out to vulnerable children in Brazil.

This year Happy Child International, a local Leatherhead charity is celebrating 25 years of working with street connected children and children at high risk in Brazil. The charities vision is to rescue, restore and reintegrate vulnerable children and young people back into their families and communities. Caroline Taylor, Head of Operations for Happy Child says â€œOver the last 25 years our team in Brazil has rescued 11,500 children and young people giving them hope for a better future. The generous donations and loyal support of local individuals and organisations here in Ashtead and Leatherhead has contributed enormously towards the continuation of the charities work. For that we are truly thankfulâ€? Currently Happy Child runs a safe home in Recife, North East Brazil which operates 24/7 to take in young vulnerable teen age girls who have become pregnant and have often been subject to various forms of violence and sexual exploitation. (Recent figures illustrate that there are 4,800,000 people who were victims of sexual exploitation in Brazil and 99% of these are women and young children). Some girls like Eva become pregnant as young as 13 or 14 years old

arriving at the home with little or no education and emotionally and psychologically traumatised. When Eva came to us she was already a mother to 2 children, arriving with her 10 month old baby and 3 year old daughter. She grew up without parents and was brought up by her brothers and sisters who struggled to make ends meet and became involved in drug trafficking. Eva was forced to leave her community and ended up living on the streets. Eva stayed in our home for a year and a half. The good news is that the Happy Child team were eventually able to resettle her and her young children with extended family. Back in April we had the pleasure of reviewing Brian Simmons memoir, ‘Stepping Out from Ashtead’ about growing up in Surrey in the post war years. That story ends as he reluctantly leaves the Metropolitan Police to return home following his mother’s cancer diagnosis. His immensely readable second volume is punctuated with many humorous and informative anecdotes; initially about life as a 1960’s motor trader, then in search of greater security for his young family, he is forced to leave his first love, the motor trade, and returns to the only other thing he knows, the police service. He sails through the induction process and is told he could be destined for senior rank. Believing this, he decides to really go for it and in so doing sows the seeds of destruction of his already shaky marriage. Applying for police accommodation, he finds himself, by amazing coincidence, allocated a house in Gladstone Road Ashtead, the road he was born in. Here he meets an elderly resident who remembers him as a toddler. Brian relates his time on the beat around Ashtead and Leatherhead and his first attachment to CID when within a couple of weeks he finds himself as the officer in a murder case.

This remarkably frank account charts the life of an ordinary working officer from ‘68 to ‘94, as uniform constable, detective, police marksman, rural police sergeant at East Horsley and police Press and Public Relations officer. With a deteriorating personal relationship the book describes the breakdown of his marriage in parallel with his professional success. Having spent much of his career in specialist departments, the author is able to lift the lid on some lesser known aspects of the police service. Single parenting of two young children, his return to the dating scene, his eventual remarriage and a major inheritance are highlights of his personal story while firearms instructor, IT trainer, force recruiting officer and promotion to inspector punctuate his police life. Nestled in the heart of Fetcham you’ll find the gem that is 1st Fetcham Scouts. In a world where children are obsessed with screens, social media and selfies it’s so very refreshing to see young people thriving in this most traditional of organisations. But the Scouting community in Fetcham is about to embark on it’s biggest adventure yet by taking on the challenge of building a new scout hut. Scouting in Fetcham dates back to 1942, and there are now over 190 boys, girls and young adults (age 6 to 18) who participate in Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer groups at the Cock Lane hut. Sadly, the hut is falling apart around their ears and does not offer all the necessary facilities required to accommodate the many

children, including those with special needs, who want to get involved. The children, and dedicated helpers, are working tirelessly to raise funds but they need help from local patrons who would like to get involved. FETCHAM VILLAGE W.I. JULY REPORT Following a busy month we looked forward to a gentler July, and prepared for our main meeting accordingly. However, Plan B was put into action when we were delighted to welcome three new visitors and almost all of our members. Impromptu table and chairs were borrowed from the adjacent Committee Room and the meeting began. Secretary Sylvia featured a report on the National Federation’s Annual General Meeting held in Cardiff in early June. Treasurer Pat updated us on a number of subjects and the forthcoming Summer Afternoon Tea. President Maureen rounded off with a resume of the past month before introducing Mrs. Mary Riley and her bespoke millinery. We were told the background and basics of hat design and our models each tried every one on display. They were judged by the audience on suitability, colour, and individual’s features; the final two chosen and regally photographed. Refreshments followed, and the regular book and cards stalls joined by plant sales to boost funds, concluded a very enjoyable evening. We now look forward to knit and natter, speakers auditions, yoga class, the Mole Veterans Brass Band concert and Committee Meeting. Order of events was slightly different this month with our group being treated to a very amusing talk entitled “You’ll Never Believe What Happened” given by Pam Goodall soon after the meeting commenced. Pam related a number of very funny and unexpected events that have taken place whilst she has been on the circuit giving talks to various groups. Pam had the group in stitches relating a number of humorous, yet at times frustrating situations. As well as this she gave examples of how it is a mistake to pre-judge individuals - as you can be very pleasantly surprised! General business was conducted after the tea break where a number of forthcoming events and trips were outlined with a local Garden Party being the first of those to take place next month. A member gave an overview of the recent Wisley trip and points were duly noted with action to take place. Three members were invited to attend a meeting of the Trustees to be held in September where questions from the group will be raised. Funds are healthy and initial discussion took place between members on how we should decide which charities to donate funds to. Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead REWILDING Rewilding seems to be an idea whose time has come. The term basically means letting Nature do its own thing, in a specified area. It’s not always 100% possible to do this, but it’s a good goal to aim for. In 2015 a new umbrella organisation, Rewilding Britain, was set up and they’ve joined a Rewilding Europe network which has affiliates all over. RB is unashamedly a work in progress. But rewilding should always be work in progress. As the stewardship plan for Wild Ennerdale says: “There is no endpoint...[our plans are] indicative of what could happen, not what will.” Ennerdale in the Lake District is an outstanding example of what can be done. Twenty years ago the landscape was dominated by “a dark and funereal shroud of foreign trees [spruce]”, to quote renowned guidebook author A. Wainwright. It was a prime site in the Forestry Commission’s long-running campaign to cover England and Scotland as far as possible with spruce plantations, excellent for timber production – a worthy goal – but a complete disaster for biodiversity. Now, the Wild Ennerdale Group (wildennerdale. co.uk) - a partnership of Natural England, the National Trust, the three big landowners there and numerous others - are transforming the valley into a biodiverse wonderland which also produces timber. Another inspiring example is Carrifran in the Scottish Borders. Twenty years ago, a group of locals decided to recreate a piece of the wildwood that covered the area 7000 years ago; they raised the money, mostly from the public, bought a 700-ha valley from a local farmer, fenced it in, and set about afforesting it, details are at www.carrifran.org and here are photos from 2004 and 2017. A big challenge for nature conservation, whether or not it’s called rewilding, is joining up fragmented habitats and reunifying fragmented gene pools. Hence, rewilding works best at a large scale, but that isn’t essential. The RSPB has done great work at Farnham Heath in SW Surrey by eliminating the former spruce monoculture and creating new heathland and mixed forest, the new flora provides food and habitats for a whole range of species including many birds. More locally Ashtead Common, The Rye Brook Meadows, Teazle Wood Trust and the Lower Mole project have all been ‘rewilding’ our Rye Brook by doing in-channel work to help make a new natural meandering flow channel which is especially important in stretches where the brook has been canalised. On a smaller scale, road verges can team with plant and insect life if left uncut see plantlife.org.uk for details about this. LEATHERHEAD COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION UPDATE

After such a long, hot dry Summer it will be good (at the time of writing) to welcome cooler days and nights! Here are the many interesting talks, visits and activities that will take place in the Institute over the Autumn. Gwen Hoad starts her music programme on 19 September with a ‘Pick & Mix’ and this is followed on 17 October, 21 November and 19 December by three more afternoons of music to enjoy. The Art/History lectures, arranged by Liz Meikle, start on 26 September with a series of 6 lectures with an eclectic mix of subjects ranging from Frida Kahlo, Arthur Gormley to Gauguin. As this is ‘the year of the women’ there will be one devoted to women in Art. On 12 October Tea and Talks will have the final talk in the Thames series taking you from Tower Bridge to Gallions Reach, on 9th November the Phoenix Players will perform the play ‘Beware of the Fat Man and adventure with a Sat Nav’, and there will be a ‘Christmas Miscellany’ presented by Ian Bevan and his wife on 14th December. There will be a full programme in the Institute over the Heritage Open Days weekend, 14-16 September, when there will be three talks, five exhibitions and two performances on the Sunday. Please look in the special HOD brochure for all the details. Don’t forget there is table tennis and snooker on Monday afternoons, two book clubs on Thursdays, and on Fridays you can play Scrabble or join in with the friendly Social Bridge Group which plays for two hours from 2pm also on a Friday. Rosanna and Janet have planned the Autumn visits going to Chiswick House in September, Freemasons Hall London in October, and Nutcracker at

Guildford in November, and Peter Humphreys is organising his shorter and longer walks, he is always happy to give you full details, just phone him on 01372 378347. The Institute can also offer you tickets at reduced prices for three concerts at the Royal Festival Hall. On 24 October there is an evening of music with a french flavour with the London Philarmonic Orchestra, on 6 November there is music by Grieg and Sibelius with the Orion Orchestra, and on 14 December ‘Christmas Classics’ is being presented by the London Concert Orchestra, together with the Trumpeters of the Coldstream Guards and much more. Remember that there are rooms for hire in the Institute, either for a single event or a course of classes, but for full information on everything that happens in the Institute please call in where you can pick up the new Newsletter which gives you all the information on the different programmes that will be running in the Autumn. Membership of the Institute is only £5 a year and most of the activities are free to Members, but nonmembers are always welcome for a small charge. BUILDING THE DREAM

How exciting to be building a new house or extending and improving an existing home. What an opportunity to create a much better living environment with garden and house working really well together. A garden designer can help assess the plot and help you ensure that you get the most from the whole plot. Iâ€™ve been to see some house extensions in my time, some which are brilliant and sadly others which unfortunately divide the plot up or have large windows facing the neighbours flank wall or doors which open to a hugely overlooked space. It would have been easy before it was built to suggest a few simple adjustments, but once its built its invariable too late and the money has been spent. Considering the landscape, both of the garden and the surrounding area means that the whole project can be informed by the context of the site and the gardens can compliment and enhance the house and your use of it. Often a landscape plan (garden design) is requested by the planners as a condition of the planning permission and it is better to have the gardens designed alongside the house, so that itâ€™s not just a rushed afterthought once planning permission is granted. A

garden designer will be able to work alongside your architect during the design stage so that the whole site is considered, not just the house. The architect will design the house and the garden designer the landscape design. There are also good practical and economic reasons to plan the garden early. It may be that clearance or any level changes are best done whist the access to the site is at its best before the extension or house is built. Sometime it may even be appropriate to plant new screening trees as early as possible during the build if they can be protected and watered throughout the build. On a sloping site the design of the garden may even influence the levels of the house as often a key planning consideration is that the new house is in keeping with its surroundings. Your house builder may suggest building up the level with he spoil from the house excavation but this may not be a good idea and built up ground may often subside and it may also affect ground water or run off and even create an uncomfortable feeling garden space. It the garden has been designed prior to the house building work starting, then the house builders can

Home & Garden quote to do all the ground work and lay the sub base for patio areas according to the garden design and specification and to the levels set by the garden design. There will be economies of scale with this approach and the house builders will have the appropriate machines on site and the skills to do the ground works. The added benefit is that this ‘hard’ space can be used by the house builder for storing materials during the build and areas of the site which will be soft landscaped can be cordoned off to protect them and ensure that no rubble is dumped in your garden. An early garden design also means that the position of drain covers and underground services can be considered too, so there are no man hole covers right in the middle of the lawn or just outside the front door. Electric and gas housing units can be positioned out of the main views or screened appropriately. Once the garden design is detailed, landscapers can quote for all the hard landscaping and the soft landscaping so that a competitive price is obtained from specialists for all the landscping work. Some architects advise that the hard landscape work is added to the main house builder’s contract, but unless all the landscape plans were included in the original tender

you won’t have three competitive quotes. The other crucial consideration is that the house builders may not have the appropriate skills in landscaping and then you have to find competent people to do the soft landscaping later which is harder and sometimes not even practical (due to reduced access across newly paved areas). If the house and garden build can be phased, then once the house building work is done then a team of specialist landscapers can be brought in to do the hard and soft landscaping so that all the skilled landscaping work is done by experts who know how to set the correct falls /drainage and any other landscaping features which are detailed in the garden design. As with everything the devil is in the detail and having a good team who can help you will make the whole process run much more smoothly. September brings changes for many of us. Returning to work after a much needed holiday, going back to work or school; or even starting at a new school or college for the first time. This can be a very stressful time, when normal routines are disrupted and new routines have to be established. What has any of this got to do with your local policing team? It’s a fair question. The point is that it’s very easy to get caught up in all these changes and to forget the simple precautions that you would normally take to safeguard your possessions and property. It’s easy to forget to secure windows and doors when leaving the house in a hurry. Remembering to lock your car when it is parked and taking all items of value with you! All of these are things that you have probably got into the habit of doing automatically but it is easy to be distracted when there are so many other things on your mind at the time. It only takes a simple lapse to give a perfect opportunity for someone to take advantage and to gain entry to your home or your vehicle and to make off with things that are really important to you. During the summer months, many of us will have been gardening on a regular basis. Sometimes, it is tempting to leave equipment, such as mowers and garden tools out, rather than locking them away. We always seem to receive a significant increase in reported thefts of quite valuable garden equipment during the summer, often because they’ve been left out or put away in insecure sheds. This still remains a problem at this time of year. It’s also worth noting

that would-be burglars will often make use of your tools, ladders etc to gain entry to your home. Many of you will also be doing last minute shopping before returning to work or school. Please keep your purses and wallets safe when you are out and about. It is easy to be distracted and it only takes seconds for an “expert” to deprive you of your cash, credit cards, driving licence and, if they are all together in a bag, your car keys and other personal possessions. Think of the inconvenience and unfortunate consequences of this happening to you! Always keep your handbag, purse or wallet close to you and never leave your bags unattended when you are out shopping. Also, be aware of who is around you when you are using cash points outside banks and ATMs. Quite a few people are tricked into being distracted by someone when withdrawing cash. Sometimes, you will have been seen entering your security code and then the card is taken while you are distracted and it can then be used to withdraw cash or pay for items using your account. Always make sure that no one is watching when you are entering your PIN code and do not respond to anyone approaching you while you are doing this. If they are genuine, then they will be happy to wait a few seconds while you complete your transaction. None of this advice is meant to cause anyone undue concern. It is just a reminder to do everything possible to avoid the additional stress of having to deal with a theft or burglary, when there is plenty already going on in your lives to keep you busy.

Earlier than that, Shakespeare is thought to have visited here when the owner Edmund Tylney was the official censor or ‘Master of the Revels’ to Queen Elizabeth I. If you like history and want to know more about this Grade II* Listed building in your area, please come along Thursday 13th - Saturday 15th September to see our display for Heritage Open Days. Bear in mind that parking space at the library will be more limited while the roofing works continue. You can also pick up a copy of the Heritage Open Days magazine which lists many other wonderful attractions and opportunities during this annual event. It has been a long hot summer. Children who’ve taken part in the libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge may need a little nudge to remind them that it ends on 15th September. They can collect their finishing certificates from any Surrey Library. Remember too, that e-Books and e-Audiobooks can count towards their target of six books to read over the summer holiday. For some, school days become the best years of our lives but for little ones just starting out into the wider world, it can be daunting. We have a selection of books to help prepare them. Are you aware we have a Digital Buddy, Thursday’s 2-4pm? A digital buddy is able to help with computer queries, using the branch PC, their own laptop or tablet. Book a slot at the desk or ring 0300 200 1001 and ask for Ashtead Library. Weekly Rhymetime Session This is a great opportunity to interact with your baby/toddler through rhythm, actions & singing & introduce children to all the library has to offer. The Rhymetime session is available on Friday 10:15am for 30 mins. Places are limited so please arrive early.

Summer Reading Scheme Once again, this years Summer Reading Challenge at Ashtead Library has been immensely popular. The Mischief Makers has been one of the best, with firm favourite such as Dennis, Gnasher, Pieface, Rubi and JJ. You have plenty of time to keep reading, but the final day to complete your reading challenge is Saturday 15th September. If you need any help or advice on what books to read - or what mischief to make- why not ask one of the librarians? They are always happy to help!
