My family and I were hoping to go on holidays to Spain in a couple of weeks however this is obviously not possible now. We expect that our flight will be cancelled. What are our rights if our flight is cancelled? Are we entitled to compensation?

If your flight is cancelled for any reason, and regardless of when you are notified, your airline must offer you the choice between: 1) Re-routing as soon as possible, subject to availability, free of charge.

2) Re-routing at a later date.

3) A full refund.

If you choose a full refund, then your airline’s obligations to you end at this point.

In normal circumstances i.e. a non Covid-19 situation, a consumer would normally choose an alternative re-routed flight as soon as possible if their flight is cancelled. If you choose to be re-routed, then you are entitled to meals and refreshments, hotel accommodation and transfers between the airport and hotel as required.

If the airline does not provide these, and you end up paying yourself, keep the receipts - you are entitled to a reimbursement of reasonable expenses.

Your compensation and expenses claim will not be evaluated at the airport. You will need to contact your airline and process your claim directly with them.

Financial compensation generally ranges from €250 to €600 and depends on the flight length and the reason for the cancellation.

Generally, compensation claims are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. www.flightrights.ie is a good website offering advice on passenger rights.

Urgent surgery ‘transferred to Bon Secours Hospital’

Local TD Denis Naughten has been informed by the HSE that urgent cancer surgery, which normally takes place in University Hospital Galway, has been transferred to Bon Secours Hospital in Galway as a result of Covid-19.

“As a result, there was a two-three week period when elective surgery was not undertaken by University Hospital Galway.

“I have been assured by the HSE that urgent cancer surgery in the West of Ireland is now back within timeframes outlined in the National Cancer Care Strategy except for these small number of cases and if patients are experiencing delays they should make contact with their GP,” concluded Denis Naughten.

Look my friend, it’s tough for everyone, but it is okay to feel empathy for all, and to be responsible about this pandemic, and to deal with our own difficulties, while STILL looking to happier times, thinking of simple pleasures, working towards getting back to normal…

Friday In the Roscommon People office, only a small number of the incoming emails are not coronavirus-related. According to the BoyleSports PR people, Sarah McInerney is now 5/2 to replace Sean O’Rourke in the prime Radio 1 slot.

Claire Byrne “has been pushed out in the betting” to 4/1 from 5/2. Miriam O’Callaghan is still favourite, at 2/1.

A while later, BoyleSports are back in touch, advising that some Irish actors are ‘in the running’ to replace Daniel Craig as the next James Bond. Michael Fassbender is now 5/1 (from 8/1), while Cillian Murphy is 14/1 from 33/1.

‘Normal People’ star Paul Mescal is mischeviously added on as a long shot.

Okay, BoyleSports’ PR ‘gamble’ has paid off, as their latest novelty bets’ list has gained some column inches here. But it surely would have been even more riveting/newsworthy if Claire Byrne or Miriam O’Callaghan were in the running to be the next 007 (Bond), or if Michael Fassbender or Paul Mescal were tipped to replace Sean O’Rourke.

I can only assume that betting on Marty Morrissey as the next James Bond has been suspended…

Saturday/Sunday We’re reliably told that people are reading more during lockdown, and watching more TV/Netflix too. This is good. Personally, I’ve been on a very random journey, indulging in a few sports’ biographies and an odd mix of TV programmes!

It’s always nice to discover, and then browse in, a quaint bookshop when on holiday, and it was in one such place that I bought an old, dusty copy of Brian Clough’s biography many years ago. I might never have read the book, were it not for lockdown. Published in 1994

by Partridge Press, it’s the controversial soccer manager’s hilarious account of his life in football, complete with anecdotes that would have today’s politically correct brigade reeling. There are stories of punch-ups in training, players drinking alcohol on the way to matches, and all sorts of other controversies.

phenomenally successful (with Derby and Nottingham Forest). Both are now gone to their eternal reward. It’s a marvellous book about a golden era in English football.

I’ve now moved on to the biography of Bobby Charlton, a rather different character to Clough, and one of the all-time greats of the game.

I’ve also discovered the documentary channels on TV. Once you accept that there’s a policy of constantly repeating programmes, there are some gems to enjoy. There are fascinating programmes on World War 2, featuring remarkable and often very moving footage.

Meanwhile, the ‘America in Colour’ series is nostalgic, informative and entertaining. These programmes document the unfolding history of America from the 1920s onwards, with great footage of events now presented in high definition colour. It really is a fascinating series.

Meanwhile, any scanning of the channels is sure to lead to a sighting of the very earnest reporter

Fred Dinenage, continuing his sometimes fascinating insights into the life stories of ‘Britain’s Most Evil Killers’.

Elsewhere, the ‘Gold’ channel lifts the mood with nightly repeats of classic comedies. The excellent ‘Blackadder’ is always worth a watch.

I still have a soft spot for the classic gentle comedy ‘Last of the summer wine’. And when I came across a documentary on the great Tommy Cooper, I was relieved to see that his unique brand of comedy has aged really well!

Monday On ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’, the host and his guest Michael Moore are very exercised by their mutual nemesis, Donald Trump.

The duo haven’t ruled out Trump orchestrating the postponement of November’s Presidential election. If/when it goes ahead, and if he loses,

Maher and Moore reckon Trump will try to hang on in office. Maher, a comedian and broadcaster who is fiercely anti-Trump, and Moore, the renowned movie-maker and author, say they’ll lead marches to Washington if Trump plays dirty. If and when they get there (with thousands of followers), they expect to be confronted by armed Trump supporters.

Crazy times in America. It all makes our fussing over Leo Varadkar ‘picnicking in the park’ seem quaint!

Tuesday On my walk around town, in gorgeous evening sunshine, I notice a little bit of activity on one of the local sports’ pitches. Four kids are having a kickaround. There’s no tackling, just a few long passes and shots on goal. It’s responsible, with social distancing observed.

The sun is glorious. An adult keeps an eye, from the sideline. Another kid is running around the pitch. One young lad drives a long shot in, the ‘goalkeeper’ scrambles and parries the ball to one side. All is well with the world, in this moment. It might just be the most beautiful sight of the summer…

Roscommon poet Jane next up in ‘Live’ Literary Network Event The Live Literary Network is a new network of arts venues that includes Roscommon Arts Centre from around Ireland who are focusing on developing audiences for literature. The network has been established as part of a Words Ireland initiative and in response to the pandemic, it has developed a six-week series of online conversations with writers with Words Ireland’s literary officer Dani Gill.

As part of the series, on Friday, 29th of May Roscommon poet Jane Clarke will be in the ‘hot seat’.

Kerrane accuses Creed of ‘hands-off approach’ Sinn Féin TD for Roscommon/ Galway Claire Kerrane has accused Minister Creed of having a ‘total hands-off approach’ to Covid-19 outbreaks in meat factories.

Deputy Kerrane was speaking during statements and questions with the Minister for Agriculture in the Dáil on Thursday last.

Deputy Kerrane said: “It is very concerning that before Monday of last week not one inspection was carried out in a meat factory, despite complaints being made.

“What is worse is that neither Minister Creed or the Minister for Business Heather Humphreys

could say how many inspections have since been carried out in meat factories, this figure according to both Ministers is confidential. In fact, Minister Humphreys went as far as to say that she didn’t need to know.

“Minister Creed has continuously said that putting safety protocols in place to protect employees is a matter for meat processing plants however, he too has a responsibility. Outbreaks at plants not only impact the individual employee concerned but their family and the entire community.

“Unfortunately, recent weeks

Naughten presses Minister on infections in meat plans Independent TD Denis Naughten says Minister Simon Harris has acknowledged that he shares concerns raised by the Roscommon/ Galway TD regarding the contact tracing system, and that as a result, the Minister has ordered an urgent examination of these concerns regarding Covid infection in the meat and nursing home sectors.

In a statement, Deputy Naughten said: “I welcome the fact that Minister Harris has reversed his position on the disclosure of medical test results to employers and is now seeking an explanation from the Department of Health and the HSE,” stated Denis Naughten.

“In my recent response to Minister Harris I took issue with six points made in his letter earlier that day justifying the disclosure of personal medical information to employers, even before employees received the results.

“This has led to a welcome u-turn by the Minister and I hope this will now commence a process of reviewing every aspect of the current infection management and contact tracing system which in its current format is doomed to failure”.

Denis Naughten pointed out that the correspondence from the Minister now begs further questions: * Why was the decision taken to

provide results to employers instead of contacting employees directly as all subjects of mass testing were asked to provide a contact number? * Who made the decision? * Did this happen in all settings in which mass testing occurred? * Were results provided to employers even where employees were contacted by the HSE? * Have the data subjects all been informed now by the HSE that sensitive health data about them was provided to their employer and details of how this data was processed?

Unleash your creative spirit during Cruinniú na nÓg Cruinniú na nÓg takes place on Saturday, 13th of June.

It is Ireland’s national day of creative activity for children and young people – and entire families. So get ready to answer the call, to celebrate your creative talents, and to share them with the nation. It’s a day for doing, making and creating.

Check out the fantastic events organised for you by Roscommon County Council Arts Office, Heritage Office and Library Service, Roscommon Arts Centre, Music Generation Roscommon and Roscommon County Youth Theatre at https://cruinniu.creativeireland.gov.ie/.

In order to make the event happen this year, most activities are online and there’s an element of getting out and about too with tutorials to encourage heritage explorations within your own 5km! De-stressing…by dancing at the castle!

A number of local people who are working on the frontline have come up with a novel way to de-stress!

About once a week, the friends meet up after work at Roscommon’s historic castle. And that’s when the fun begins!

First time out, the group danced to ‘Is This The Way To Amarillo’, following up with

‘Let’s Twist Again’ and other classics.

The people taking part have even gone to the trouble of dressing up in colourful costumes!

One of the organisers is Jacqui Gunning, who works in retail in Roscommon Town.

Jacqui told the Roscommon People: “It has been a very

stressful time for us all over the past couple of months. I work with wonderful people and we try to keep our spirits up at work by singing and having a laugh.

“We then decided to meet after work and dance to ‘Is this the way to Amarillo’. It was such fun, we have decided to continue this as a weekly ritual!”

leagues have of course maintained social distancing during their weekly dancing get-togethers.

Jacqui concluded: “We all miss our family and friends but we also need to stay positive and have some fun. Until the world goes back to normal, we will keep singing and dancing at the castle!”

Peddler Mac’s live music venue in Athlone have organised an exciting musical fundraiser which will be held this Sunday evening.

While Peddler Mac’s – like all other pubs – is closed at the moment due to the Covid-19 restrictions, Kevin and Bryan wanted to support the South Westmeath Hospice and also organise a fun concert to lift people’s spirits.

The Live music concert will be hosted on Peddler Mac’s Facebook page this Sunday, 31st of May, and will feature a number of top artists, including the Kevin and Bryan O’Gara of Peddler Mac’s live music venue in Athlone have organised an exciting musical fundraiser which will be held this Sunday evening.

While Peddler Mac’s – like all other pubs – is closed at the moment due to the Covid-19 re-

strictions, Kevin and Bryan wanted to support the South Westmeath Hospice and also organise a fun concert to lift people’s spirits.

Words of wit and wisdom with MIRIAM KERINS

There’s no such thing as the ‘perfect parent’ Hi readers, (and indeed, parents in particular), I’d like to ask you a question. Are you feeling a bit overwhelmed? Are you drowning in a sea of ‘how to’ advice coming through social media? Me too! Okay, my girls are adults, so the how-to-Feng-Shui-your-kid (kinda like chop suey only not as delish) brigade and their perfect-parenting potions are lost on me.

I mean, isn’t it enough we’re all worrying about family members we can’t see during Covid, are concerned for our livelihoods and, let’s face it, the state of the country in general, without being over-exposed to dictatorial instruction that could, if we’re feeling vulnerable, seriously shake our confidence? Am I right? You know I am.

So, when I heard a teaser for Channel 4’s ‘Britain’s Best Parent,’ a reality TV series

exploring the best way to raise a child, I immediately resurrected my pained sucking-my-face-out-through-the-backof-my-skull expression. Why? Because shows like this can lead to some parents developing perfectionist tendencies, resulting in a compulsion to try and control everything.

How do I know? I’ve been that self-doubting parent; the one who thought she’d malfunctioned at motherhood. The one who thought she was never quite doing enough.

The one who felt she was, at best…only average. Parenting, at any time, but especially during a world pandemic, is an emotionally and intellectually draining experience.

For me, placing such TV tripe at the forefront of our national conversation, showcasing

self-proclaimed perfect parents (harbouring high hopes of one day being memorialised on a postage stamp), preaching how the next generation should be raised, is infuriating!

We don’t need it, especially when we’re in the middle of a stressful health crisis. I mean, surely we can’t all be expected to scale the cliff-face of magnificence…can we? I don’t believe we can.

However, what I do believe is that all of us, whether parenting kids or adults, need to start rejoicing in our successes, and, when we feel we’ve got it wrong, tell ourselves we’re not malfunctioning at motherhood, nor are we flunking at fatherhood. And why? Well, because there’s no such thing as a parent with endless energy, endless time and endless patience.

I’m pining for the professionals…

The country is slowly reopening, (at last), however, social distancing guidelines and government-forced lockdowns are still in place for many businesses; hair and beauty salons being just two of them. And, while it absolutely makes good health-sense to have these strategies in place, it’s not exactly comforting for those us of who desperately need a haircut, a brow and lash tint and trim; and don’t even get me started on the state of my nails!

Now I’m not claiming that pre-Covid I went around looking like one of the Kardashians with luscious lips, conical boobs and the obligatory flawless den-

tition, (I did not). However, I did have decent hair, nails, brows and lashes and, like most readers, I desperately depend on the professionals to keep my beauty-related necessities from turning into what have now become untidy coronavirus hangovers!

Let’s say that my time in isolation has now been stressed to the max, and, in order to avoid what I’d call ‘mono-brow madness,’ I admit, like many, I’ve taken to tweezing my stray brow hairs, then colouring them back in again; the results of which could be described as being spine-chilling. Thank God I can hide behind my overgrown fringe.

There he was, all-over tan, tailored teeth, a coronet of eh, perfectly combed-over hair, and a freshly dry-cleaned suit, desperately trying to command respect as he tried hard to sell himself to the country as our new leader.

I’m talking about Micheál Martin’s appearance on last week’s Late Late Show, folks.

Look, while Mr. Martin insists the prospect of being our next Taoiseach doesn’t make him nervous, I have to say the likelihood of him taking the big job

frightens the you-know-what out of me; and so it should. I mean, it’s not as if the nation’s forgotten the economic devastation it suffered at the hands of a former Fianna Fáil-led administration now, is it? Surely our memories are not that short?

Lockdown rules apply to everyone!

The sight of Boris Johnson, head down, defending his key advisor Dominic Cummings amid the furore resulting from his aide’s jaunt from London to County Durham during lockdown, was pretty pathetic. In fact girls, BJ’s woeful attempt at rationalisation was akin to the protestations of a flat-chested woman (me) desperately trying to convince herself she wears a 34 DD cup bra!

For those of you who missed the memo, Cummings drove 260 miles (420km) in March, allegedly in search of childcare services with his wife who reportedly had coronavirus symptoms.

Cummings also faced further allegations of making a second trip. Well folks, I’m not sure what your thoughts are on this fiasco, but in my opinion, as a way of bringing your career and credibility to an abrupt end, it appears Cummings’ ill-considered road-trip could prove to be pretty successful!

Council invites applications for the County Roscommon Pride of Place Competition 2020 Roscommon County Council is currently inviting community groups across County Roscommon to participate in the County Roscommon Pride of Place Competition 2020.

Pride of Place is a prestigious All-Island competition and recognises the vast wealth of community contribution to the local

society and the creation of civic pride.

The 2019 awards were presented to the winning groups at a ceremony in The Lyrath Estate Hotel, Kilkenny in November 2019, which resulted in the County Roscommon entrants Athleague Tidy Towns/Athleague 2020 winning the overall award in their category and Boyle Town Team/Boyle

Roscommon County Council will nominate one or more groups to the All-Island Pride of Place Competition organised

by Co-Operation Ireland.

The 2020 Pride of Place competition promises to showcase some of the vast wealth of talent and innovation that characterises community groups throughout County Roscommon. The competition is divided into twelve categories.

Categories for 2020 The categories for 2020 are as follows: Category 1 – Population: 0-300, Category 2 – Population:

300-1,000, Category 3 – Population: 1,000-2,000, Category 4 – Population: 2,000-5,000, Category 5 – Population: over 5,000, Category 6 – Theme: Creative Place Initiative, Category 7 – Theme: Community Wellbeing Initiative, Category 8 – Theme: Community Youth Led Initiative, Category 9 – Theme: Community Tourism Initiative, Category 10 – Housing Estates, Category 11 – Islands and Coastal Communities, Category 12 – Urban Neighbourhoods.

Community groups can only enter the All-Island competition by being nominated by Roscommon County Council. The

Roscommon County Council would like to invite communities to participate in the County Roscommon Pride of Place Competition 2020.

Category winners will be nominated by Roscommon County Council to the All-Island Pride of Place Competition organised by Co-Operation Ireland. Pride of Place is about the celebration of community group’s contribution to local society and the creation of civic pride through communities working together.

County Pride of Place competition is open to all communities in County Roscommon with the exception of communities that have been nominated within the last three years.

Applications should be made on a town/village/ parish basis. Applications received from different groups in the same area may be treated as one application. Groups should, where possible, work together and submit one joint application.

Pride of Place emphasises the need for community groups to work together in enhancing their local area and rewards those who demonstrate community co-operation and linkages with public bodies, businesses and agencies.

For this year only, due to the COVID-19 crisis, the All-Island Pride of Place Competition cannot take place in its usual format.

Community groups that are entered into the All-Island Pride of Place 2020 competition will be asked to submit a detailed written submission (a template for submissions is available) and this will replace, for this year only, the judges’ visit to the community. Community

groups will be judged on their detailed submission.

In addition, a call (e.g. teleconference/zoom/Microsoft Teams) will be arranged between the group and the judges. Each call will facilitate a Question & Answer session and will provide community groups with an opportunity to elaborate on their submission and also facilitate judges to seek clarification.

The closing date for this year’s County Competition is 5 pm on Tuesday, 16th of June 2020.

The late Gerry Corcoran: A tribute < SEAMUS DUKE

I first met Gerry Corcoran, right, (and his wife Anne) when the Miss Ellie’s nightclub in Roscommon was on the go in the late 1970s. We remained good friends ever since. He was quietly spoken, great company, and a man with a massive sense of community spirit. We worked together in Rockford’s and many’s a chat we had about the affairs of the day on a weekly basis over a couple of pints.

When that phase of our lives was over we remained friends and indeed he did the tarring work around our house when we built it in 1998.

Gerry asked me to play at

several family functions and get-togethers in Kenny’s in Rockfield over the years and I can genuinely say that you couldn’t meet a more decent or honourable man.

Gerry did colossal work in the community over the years, but it was work he did quietly

and without any fuss. He was one of the main driving forces behind the development of the Rockfield complex and in recent years he was very proud of the new facilities at his beloved Oran GAA Club. He was also involved in several other community groups, including the Oran graveyard committee.

Gerry was ill over the past couple of years. He fought that illness with courage, bravery and determination. Just last Christmas I met him with the Oran team as they celebrated winning Division 5 of the football league. If they had won the Sam Maguire Cup he wouldn’t have been more excited. It was a measure of the man he was.

I always loved to meet Gerry.

He was marvellous company and a good friend always. To Anne, Martina, Katrina and David and all the rest of the family, my sincere sympathy.

May he rest in peace.

10 YEARS AGO From Seamus Duke Column: Spirits lifted by sunshine

There is no doubt that the good weather lifts everyone’s spirits and we have had a great summer so far. Driving around the country is it is uplifting to see people out working hard in the fields at hay and silage and in the bog getting the turf ready to bring home. The three terrible summers that we have had in recent years are a distant memory and I know that there have been loads of barbecues in people’s houses over the last few weeks. There is no doubt about it, if we ‘had the weather’ in this country there is nowhere like it in the whole world.

8 YEARS AGO Group cycled from Roscommon to Croagh Patrick…then climbed it!

A group of people based around Roscommon town recently undertook a unique challenge to raise money for the Suicide Aware charity. The group cycled to the foot of Croagh Patrick from Roscommon town, proceeding then to climb Croagh Patrick.

15 cyclists made the 113 km journey on bikes and 22 people climbed The Reek and in the region of €5,500 was collected for the charity.

The fundraiser was organised by Liam Casey and David Kelly and among those who took part were well-known GAA players Frankie Dolan and Enda Daly, along with several other people from around the Roscommon town area.

7 YEARS AGO GAA legend ‘Gooch’ in Roscommon – but just for one day! < SEAMUS DUKE

He’s not transferring to Roscommon – unfortunately – but GAA legend Colm ‘The Gooch’ Cooper was in great form when he made a visit to the county town this week.

‘Gooch’ was in Roscommon town on Tuesday at the Convent of Mercy Secondary School to advise students on the AIB ‘Build a Bank’ competition and to do some skills with the school football teams.

Colm Cooper will play for his club team Dr Crokes of Killarney in the AIB All-Ireland club senior football semi-final against Ballymun of Dublin next Saturday and he will be hoping to get to the final on St. Patrick’s Day where Roscommon champions St. Brigid’s will be hoping to be involved too.

I spoke to Colm Cooper as he met the staff and students at the Convent School. “I’m in Roscommon today as part of an AIB initiative called Build a Bank that we do for schools all over the country. I am here today to have a chat with the girls from Transition Year and

5th year who are involved in the initiative and who are going to the regional finals in Sligo soon.

“I’m also doing a bit of coaching here today and that’s tied into the visit too. I’ll be meeting a few of the football teams in the school and I enjoy the skills sessions that we do with the young players.

“With regard to myself and the football we are training away with Dr Crokes but it’s such a long year when you are involved with your club as well the county. But it’s great to be involved in the semi-final of the AIB Club Championship. Every club player wants to be in Croke Park on St. Patrick’s Day but Ballymun will provide huge opposition for us and it will be a cracker of a game in Thurles on Saturday week”.

From Paul Healy’s column: Majella touches an entire nation…

There were good reasons (for me at least) not to be over-enthusiastic about viewing Majella O’Donnell on last Friday night’s Late Late Show.

One: I don’t like the Late Late Show any more.

Two: I’m not a fan of Daniel O’Donnell and usually see appearances by him and Majella as cheesy. Three: I wasn’t sure about the suitability of this topic to a Friday night primetime television programme.

As it turns out, I saw the programme, and I have to say that Majella O’Donnell was wonderful and that the segment was sensitively handled by Ryan Tubridy and in no way out of place or ill-judged.

While Ryan did his job well and the audience members were clearly touched by Majella’s bravery, the most striking aspect of the proceedings was the truly remarkable courage and generosity of this brave, highly impressive and articulate woman.

This was compelling television and, as a fundraiser for the Irish Cancer Society, an extraordinary success (over €400,000 raised as we go to press). However, while Majella O’Donnell so eloquently sought to divert attention from her own illness, for viewers, it was almost impossible not to be impressed by her remarkable bravery and generosity. Majella really did touch the nation on Friday night and everyone will wish her a speedy

recovery and every happiness in the future.

Roscommon artist wins Arthur Guinness Projects award < EOGHAN YOUNG-MURPHY

A piece by Roscommon artist Joe Caslin was announced on Monday as one of the winning projects in the Arthur Guinness Projects.

Joe’s masterpiece, Our Nation’s Sons, encourages the empowerment of potentially marginalised young men in their community. The project was crowned one of the winners in the arts category.

One of the judges was Boyle actor Chris O’Dowd.

The Arthur Guinness Projects, which was launched in June this year, was developed to champion and celebrate people whose ideas, passion and spirit are enhancing and shaping our culture and identity.

The initiative, which has showcased an abundance of talent and creativity, has seen hundreds of project applications from across the island of Ireland, with thousands more showing their support by voting online.

Fr Devine inducted into ‘Caring Hall of Fame’

Follows in footsteps of Dalai Lama On Thursday 31st October, Fr. Patrick Devine SMA, founder and executive director of the Shalom Centre for Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation (SCCRR) in Kenya, was inducted into the Caring Hall of Fame by the Caring Institute (USA) in Washington DC. The Caring Institute, led by Senators Bob Dole and Tom Daschle, promotes the values of caring, integrity and public service. The Annual Caring Awards, inspired by Mother Teresa of Calcutta, recognise people who try to make such a difference to the world and set an example for others.

The recipient in 2012 was the Dalai Lama.

From County Roscommon, Fr. Devine has spent the past 25 years in Tanzania and Kenya in East Africa working in a variety of environments,

where he frequently encountered serious conflict.

4 YEARS AGO John becomes first wheelchair user to summit Croagh Patrick < DAN DOONER

Last Saturday, Williamstown native, John Tobin, became the first wheelchair user to climb Croagh Patrick. John, aged 29, suffers from cerebral palsy and was helped on the climb by local volunteers, Roscommon Civil Defence and his family and friends.

The climb started on Saturday morning and took approximately three hours to complete with a committed team of helpers using ropes to manoeuvre a specially designed, suspension wheelchair towards the summit.

John was joined on the climb by family members, friends and supporters and arrived at the top of Croagh Patrick just before 2 pm to a rousing ovation amid emotional scenes.

John’s mother, Ann, paid an emotional tribute to her son at the summit: “It’s just amazing to see and amazing to see his face when he landed at the top is just a dream. He’s just an amazing person and I love that he’s my son”.

John was later presented with a medal for being the first wheelchair to successfully climb ‘Ireland’s Holiest Mountain’. The fundraising event ‘Climb With John’ has so far raised over €15,000 for five local charities, including: Join Our Boys; Irish Wheelchair Association (ROC Day Centre and Cuisle Holiday Centre); Ability West, Brothers of Charity (Cherry House) and Creggs NS ‘Sunshine Class’.

John and his team descended Croagh Patrick in a little over two hours on Saturday evening and received a hero’s welcome.

Progress? Cautious welcome for Mulvey’s Just Transition report Denis Naughten TD has welcomed the publication of the Just Transition Commissioner Report – but warned that we need to see “real action” on the delivery of measures within communities right across the region now.

Local businessman fears for economy and public health if we don’t ‘crush’ Covid now < PAUL HEALY

A Roscommon businessman has appealed to local politicians to lobby for a change to Ireland’s approach in the battle against Covid-19.

Everyone has an opinion on how Ireland as a nation is dealing with Covid-19, and that includes local businessman Larry O’Gara. In a letter to the Roscommon People, Mr. O’Gara outlined his concerns about our current approach.

Mr. O’Gara, a well-known nightclub and bar owner, does not believe that the economy should be reopened yet. He says businesses in Roscommon and throughout the country might reopen in the coming weeks and months – but that many of them have no chance of survival if a policy of ‘living with Covid’ is persisted with.

On the health front, Mr. O’Gara says one expert has warned that over 40,000 people in this country could die from Covid-19 over the next four to five years if Ireland adopts a ‘containment’ approach.

While he thinks the Government and health experts have acquitted themselves well up to this point, Mr. O’Gara says he

is nonetheless deeply worried about the lifting of restrictions, even on a phased basis.

The businessman says he has been greatly influenced by infectious disease experts who are advising that countries should try to “crush Covid-19” rather than “settling for living with the virus”.

In particular, he cites the advice of infectious disease expert, Professor Gerry Killeen, who is in favour of Ireland closing its borders, widespread wearing of face masks, and re-

strictions remaining in place.

The Roscommon man also quotes another expert who said on TV on Tuesday night that “the scientific community wants this virus eradicated now”.

Mr. O’Gara wrote: “Personally, I feel we need to be very cautious about reopening the economy. Of course we all want to return to normal as soon as possible. I’m a long time in business, so I certainly feel that way too.

“However, the economy won’t recover until people feel safe. If we don’t crush the virus now, we will face a second wave of Covid-19, and then further waves. By reopening the economy and lifting restrictions, are we gambling with people’s lives?”

Mr. O’Gara says he has seen at first-hand a small number of people in Roscommon not observing social distancing. This greatly concerns him.

“If we don’t crush the virus, as opposed to just flattening the curve, more waves of it will come, and then we will be back to square one, with restrictions imposed again.

“In relations to businesses, we have to be realistic. Hairdress-

ers and bars and restaurants can reopen, taxi drivers can return to work, but will the business be there for them? We need to complete the job now. We need to get to a place where businesses can open up when they have the prospect of being viable”.

Mr. O’Gara said he is speaking out now because he was sorry he hadn’t spoken out during the recession of 2008.

“At that time, every business person knew that bailing out the banks was a disaster. But the government wouldn’t listen”.

12 years on, he says politicians are not infectious disease experts, and they need to be wary of a rush to reopen the economy, wary too of vested interests.

“As a country, we’re planning to live with the virus instead of crushing it. But there’s no point in locking the front door and leaving the windows of the house open. Where we are at now is not normal. We can’t go to football matches, we can’t hold our grandchildren.

“We can crush this virus, or live with it. The Government is saying ‘live with it’ – but if we live with it, it’s devastation”.

What Professor Killeen is saying…

Professor Gerry Killeen is emerging as a prominent voice in the debate on Ireland’s approach on Covid-19.

Research Chair in Applied Pathogen Ecology at the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences in University College Cork, Professor Killeen says there will be repeated waves of Covid-19 over the next four years unless restrictions remain in place for now.

On The Tonight Show on Virgin Media, he said Ireland needs to follow the example of “China, Taiwan and New Zealand”, rather than focussing on the response to the pandemic in Europe.

“If you relax (restrictions) a tiny bit more we have a growing epidemic again – then you have to reintroduce restrictions. You need to get this over and done with fast”.

Meanwhile, in an interview on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Professor Killeen warned that it’s not enough to flatten the curve of the virus – it has to be crushed. He said that the Irish response to incoming travellers and asymptomatic cases has been “slow and half-hearted”.

“There’s no way to get to Phase Five without causing a second wave so then I’d ask the question, why would we embark on a journey that sooner or later is going to backfire on us?” Professor Killeen said.

“Certainly, our existing restrictions should go on for longer but we’re talking about months and we’re talking about bringing it to an end point where the virus is eliminated from the country”.

€2m upgrade of Monksland Wastewater Treatment Plant

A €2 million upgrade to the Monksland Wastewater Treatment Plant in County Roscommon has been completed.

Irish Water carried out the works to modernise and upgrade the wastewater treatment plant in partnership with Roscommon County Council and contractors Glan Agua Limited.

Commenting, Eunan Canavan Irish Water, said: “These essential upgrade works to the Monksland plant will ensure that all wastewater treated at the plant and returning to the Cross River is fully compliant with EU Urban Wastewater Directives.

The works will also enable the plant to better deal with storm events and will assist with capacity for growth in Monksland and surrounding areas”.

As part of these essential works at the Monks-

land plant the inlet works, screens, grit removal and overflow chamber were all upgraded; a new storm water holding tank and associated storm water overflow infrastructure were constructed; improvements were made to sludge handling facilities; the control systems at the plant were upgraded and the old inlet works and disused sludge drying beds were decommissioned and demolished.

Cllr. John Naughten has welcomed the completion of the €2m upgrade.

“The completion of this work will provide the capacity for growth in Monksland and the surrounding area both in terms of population and business which is extremely welcome,” stated Cllr. Naughten.

Covid-19 Business Restart Grant FAQ (See advertisement opposite) What types of business can apply?

Subject to the qualifying criteria below, any business that has a commercially rateable premises, or where rates are paid on your behalf and attributable to the business premises you occupy, can apply. Multiple chain stores, i.e. a business that is a non-financially independent branch of a group of chain stores, which is owned and managed by a single entity, are not eligible.

Non-commercial organisations such as community and sporting premises (including charity shops and community and sporting premises with a bar) are not eligible. Businesses that do not operate from commercially rateable premises (tradesmen, service providers, etc.) are not eligible. Premises that were vacant prior to the Covid-19 emergency are not eligible for the grant.

How soon will I get my grant?

On average, we hope to issue approval within one week. This depends, of course, on the initial volume of appli-

cations. Applications will be processed in relation to anticipated re-opening dates, in line with the Government’s strategy for the re-opening of the economy.

How much will I get?

The grant will be the amount of your rates demand in respect of calendar year 2019 only, subject to a minimum of €2,000 and a maximum of €10,000.

In the event that your rates demand was reduced on appeal, the appeal rate will apply to an amount of the grant if the grant is over €2,000.

If my rates demand for calendar year 2019 was less than €2,000 can I receive a grant of €2,000?

Yes. What can I use the grant for?

The grant is a contribution towards the cost of re-opening or keeping a business operational and re-connecting with employees and customers. The grant could be used to defray ongoing fixed costs, e.g. utilities, insurance, refurbishment or for measures to ensure

How will the grant be paid?

The grant will be paid by electronic transfer to the business account detailed on the application form. employee and customer safety.

Yes. The local authority will endeavour to assess what your rates demand for 2019 would have been and, if, for any reason, an estimate cannot be made the minimum grant of €2,000 will be paid.

Hidden connections …JFK and us!

Grace Robinson Carroll, a student of the Convent of Mercy, Roscommon, made a very interesting discovery recently…

It is strange how you can go through your life day by day and there are amazing things that you do not know about yourself and the world around you, how there are…hidden connections. This story is a prime example.

My mother (Samantha Robinson Carroll) took a DNA test and also had a paper trail done to try and uncover details of our family tree and see whom we are related to.

My mother had come across many people that we are related to – cousins, etc. – and then we came across an amazing discovery.

The photograph alongside shows former President of America, John F. Kennedy, with three other people. The amazing discovery that we have made is that we are third cousins

of JFK! Allow me to explain how. The lady standing directly behind JFK is one of my family members.

Her name was Margaret Bernice ‘Bunny’ Fitzpatrick, and she married Rose Kennedy’s brother, Thomas Acton Fitzgerald. (Rose Kennedy was JFK’s mother). Margaret’s spouse was JFK’s uncle and his two children are first cousins to JFK. John Fitzpatrick was a brother of my great-grandmother, Eliza Fitzpatrick. Now back to the photo: the lady who is standing behind JFK is Margaret (as outlined), and

the other lady was Margaret’s mother-inlaw, Josephine Hannon Fitzgerald. The man on the right was Tom Acton Fitzgerald. Margaret is related to us through my mother’s side.

This is truly an amazing discovery – to find out that we are related to one of the most iconic people in history. My family – mother (Samantha), brother (Jack Robinson Carroll), myself and my grandparents (Patricia and Michael) are very excited and happy about this discovery.

RosFM fundraising competition RosFM are giving one lucky winner a Michael Kors Cece Monogram Coated Canvas Shoulder Bag, Dinner & Wine for two at the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon and a hamper from ‘So Sue Me’.

RosFM Community radio was set up in 2004 with a disability ethos in mind; it would provide a safe training environment and buddy system for any individual with intellectual disabilities. It is completely run by volunteers with no paid staff. The running cost of the station is approximately €15k a year along with many loans to repay from previous costs accumulated. Each year RosFM hold fundraisers and training, which helps

with these costs. This year it has been greatly impacted due to Covid-19. They are in desperate need to raise funds to cover the running costs in order to continue providing a voice to all in the community.

Conexão Brasileira As semanas passam e ainda estamos falando sobre o Coronavírus. Um vírus que mudou nossas habilidades de sobrevivência. Em um primeiro momento, quando o primeiro caso do vírus veio a ser identificado aqui na Irlanda em Março, os casos cresceram rapidamente, atingimos o pico do vírus, vivemos e continuamos vivendo em confinamento. Na segunda-feira, ao assistir ao noticiário, foi anunciado o primeiro dia em que não tivemos mortes. Como ser humano e passando pelo que todos estamos passando, é muito gratificante ver que uma nação, juntamente com seus governantes, pode alcançar resultados satisfatórios. Obviamente, os cuidados necessários não mudam, pois continuamos a tomar precauções e certamente aprendemos a cuidar melhor de nós mesmos. Acredito que agora somos capazes de cuidar de nós mesmos de uma maneira diferente, porque sabemos que essa nova maneira de viver será por um período mais longo.

A primeira fase da reabertura do país ocorreu na semana passada. Inclui lojas de ferragens e, em particular, lojas que possuem áreas externas.

A segunda fase ocorre no dia 8 de junho, com a abertura de lojas menores. E assim retornaremos lentamente à algo um pouco incerto, algo que ainda não sabemos completamente.

Infelizmente, o que sabemos é que estão chegando consequências que ainda não entendemos. Muitas pequenas empresas, assim como as grandes, estão na corda bamba. Economistas e jornais dizem que estamos entrando em outra crise mundial. Nas crises passadas, os jovens tiveram a oportunidade de tentar encontrar trabalho em outros países, como Austrália, EUA ou Canadá. Infelizmente, desta vez não há para onde correr porque o vírus criou uma crise global.

Roscommon Swift Survey 2020 to take place this summer Perhaps the most iconic and intriguing of our urban bird species, swifts are a small migratory bird that visit Ireland each year to nest. They travel from southern Africa where they have spent over eight months of the year.

Swifts have adapted to nesting in cavities where found in buildings in our cities, towns, and villages. Their future is seriously threatened in Ireland due primarily to the loss of nesting sites.

However, the good news is that there is a lot that can be done to halt the decline in Roscommon’s swift population. Knowing how many swifts there are and where they nest in our cities, towns and villages is the first step.

This summer, BirdWatch Ireland will conduct a County Swift Survey in Roscommon. Although finding, recording, and mapping swift nesting sites is core to

BirdWatch Ireland this summer will be actively surveying in Roscommon. The ‘County Roscommon Swift Survey 2020’ is an initiative of the Roscommon County Council Heritage Office and County Roscommon Heritage Forum and is funded by the National Parks and Wildlife Service’s National Biodiversity Action Plan Fund.

Brazilian conection The weeks go by and we are still talking about coronavirus. A virus that has come to change our survival skills. When the first case of the virus came to be identified here in Ireland in March, the cases grew rapidly, we reached the peak of the virus and we lived in, and continue to live in, lockdown.

On Monday, when watching the News, it was announced it was the first day that we had no deaths. As a human being going through what we are all going through, it is comforting to see that a nation, together with its government, can achieve results such as these. Of course, the necessary care we must take does not change – we must continue to take precautions and better care of ourselves. I believe that we are now able to take care of ourselves in a different way, because we know that this new way of living will be around for a while.

The first phase of reopening the country took place last week. It includes hardware stores and in particular, stores that have outdoor areas. The second phase comes on the 8th of June, with the opening of smaller stores. And so, we will slowly return to something a little uncertain, something that we still don’t know fully.

Unfortunately, what we do know is that consequences are coming that we do not understand yet. Many small businesses, as well as the large businesses, are on a tightrope. Economists and newspapers say that we are entering another world crisis. In past crises, young people had the opportunity to try to find work in other countries such as Australia, USA or Canada.

Unfortunately, this time there is nowhere to run, because the virus has created a global crisis.

A little closer to home, we can already see signs of the impact to come. We already know some local companies that will not reopen their doors. And with that will go many jobs... it’s a worrying time for everyone!

Brazil: Covid 19 Unfortunately, we are unable to say the same about Brazil. Brazil has been experiencing a lack of political control, where the President, government and ministers are in complete disagreement. In

the absence of a strategy, Brazil now holds the second highest levels of the virus in the world. Putting an entire population at greater risk by not offering the expected leadership could be political suicide for Bolsanero. The spotlight is on Brazil now, and on the President – and the world is watching!

The Last Dance I grew up involved in sports; my mother was a Physical Education Teacher in High School, a soccer coach and a basketball player. Weekends always had a game here and there. Last week we spent the evenings watching The Last Dance on Netflix. The documentary is about Michael Jordan’s career, the giant who delighted us on the basketball court playing for the Chicago Bulls. When that man jumped, it was like he could float in the air! He defied gravity.

He had a level of competitiveness that was unequalled, and his legacy will surely never be matched.

Michael carried his team, and at the same time his perseverance and determination motivated and inspired his teammates to be the best that they could be. his, in turn, provided him with the back-up that enabled him to shine brighter with every game. A must-see for every sports fan!

Personally, I think the most effective thing to do to control the spread of the virus, is to wash our hands thoroughly and regularly.

Phase 1 Roadmap for Reopening Society and Business The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted our lives. Now, thanks to your patience and sacrifice, we are taking the first steps on a 5-phase reopening of our country.

It is important to be aware of Public Health restrictions and guidance:

Work from home if you can. Bear in mind that most workplaces, especially offices, remain closed.

The 5km limit applies to outdoor exercise, social visits and visits to public amenities.

Social distancing, hygiene measures and coughing and sneezing etiquette must always be observed. Wash your hands regularly.

Older and vulnerable people who are cocooning should stay indoors, apart from brief outdoor exercise.

FRANK SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION Sunday, May 31 2020 The giving of the Spirit to the new people of God crowns the mighty acts of the Father in salvation history.

The Jewish feast of Pentecost called all devout Jews to Jerusalem to celebrate their birth as God’s chosen people, in the covenant Law given to Moses at Sinai (see Leviticus 23:15–21; Deuteronomy 16:9–11).

In today’s First Reading the mysteries prefigured in that feast are fulfilled in the pouring out of the Spirit on Mary and the Apostles (see Acts 1:14).

The Spirit seals the new law and new covenant brought

by Jesus, written not on stone tablets but on the hearts of believers, as the prophets promised (see 2 Corinthians 3:2–8; Romans 8:2).

The Spirit is revealed as the life-giving breath of the Father, the Wisdom by which He made all things, as we sing in today’s Psalm. In the beginning, the Spirit came as a “mighty wind” sweeping over the face of the earth (see Genesis 1:2). And in the new creation of Pentecost, the Spirit again comes as “a strong, driving wind” to renew the face of the earth.

As God fashioned the first man out of dust and filled him with His Spirit (see Genesis 2:7), in today’s Gospel we see the New Adam become a life-giving Spirit, breathing new life into the Apostles (see 1 Corinthians 15:45, 47).

Like a river of living water, for all ages He will pour out His Spirit on His body, the Church, as we hear in today’s Epistle (see also John 7:37–39).

We receive that Spirit in the sacraments, being made a “new creation” in Baptism (see 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 6:15).

Drinking of the one Spirit in the Eucharist (see 1 Corinthians 10:4), we are the first fruits of a new humanity – fashioned from out of every nation under heaven, with no distinctions of wealth or language or race, a people born of the Spirit.

unique take on life ...

Animal magic: Why I’m spellbound by Seven Worlds: One Planet From wildlife in South America to new lambs in Creggs, our columnist is transfixed by some animal magic…

Almost ten weeks into lockdown, and one of my greatest discoveries (so far) is a man who is 94-four-years old, who has – obviously – been around for a long, long time, and is a world renowned figure, but it’s only now that he

has truly managed to capture my imagination. The man I speak of is Sir David Attenborough, an English broadcaster and historian, but it is his amazing wildlife series Seven Worlds: One Planet, that has absolutely kept me spellbound on each of the last three Sunday evenings. I genuinely can’t wait to see the remaining four programmes in the series.

So far we have been treated to the unbelievable wildlife of South America, where we see some extraordinary fish jump several feet out of the water

to pick berries off the trees on the river bank, and where a puma mum gets seriously injured as she hunts guanaco to feed her hungry cubs; the guanaco is two and a half times as heavy as the puma and is over two metres tall, and on her first two attempts the mother is unsuccessful, and gets badly cut and injured in the process. When, on her third attempt, she manages to make a kill, she (while still badly injured) has to drag the massive dead weight of the guanaco more than a kilometre across rough, unforgiving terrain to

where her starving cubs are waiting for a much-needed feed. The meal that she manages to provide will only last three to four days and then she will have to do it all again, still injured, weak, and herself in danger of falling prey to some other predators.

We saw walruses in large numbers, weighing up to two tons, falling hundreds of feet from huge cliffs to their deaths, where they became instant dinners for waiting polar bears. There was amazing footage of beaches, which were literally covered

in sea lions, sometimes up to a hundred thousand of them, and penguins having to walk on the backs of the sea lions – and in other cases, angry polar bears – to get to the sea.

So far we have visited Antarctica, Asia, and South America, and the different wildlife on view is almost beyond belief. The camerawork is extraordinary, and all I can say is, if you haven’t seen any episode so far, tune in to RTÉ 1 next Sunday evening at 6.30 pm and I guarantee that you will see stuff you never knew existed.

Another top sporting moment…

I’ve finally nailed it…

On to my top ten sporting memories, and remarkably, 21 years ago today (I am now finishing this column on Tuesday) my fourth event took place in the Nou Camp in Barcelona, when my beloved Manchester United came back from the dead to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the 1999 Champions League final.

United, who were without two of their most influential players – Paul Scholes and team captain, Roy Keane – trailed from the sixth minute and were still a goal down as the game went into injury-time. The Munich fans were already celebrating, when in the 91st minute United won a corner. David Beckham floated it in, and after a bit of bouncy ball, Teddy Sheringham put it in the net.

Everyone expected extra-time, but there was still a twist in the tale; thirty seconds after the kick-off, United won another corner, Beckham again floated it in, Sheringham headed it across the goal, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

stuck out his foot and put the ball in the roof of the net. Even though the game restarted, Bayern were so distraught that they could barely play and they never looked as if they could possibly get a last-second equaliser – and so probably our greatest ever victory was sealed.

The Bayern ribbons, which had already been put on the cup, had to be taken off and replaced by the red of United, and the whole place went mad. What a night, what a memory, and well worth a place in my top ten.

It’s Monday morning as I write this piece and myself and my little Jack Russell, Hope, have been on our daily walk around the lovely country roads of Lenamarla. I have often told you before of the wonderful flowers, plants, birds and trees that are to be found on our rural route. Primroses, bluebells, violets, rockets and wild roses are among the flowers that populate the hedges, while there is an amazing array of all kinds of plants growing everywhere.

My wife, Carol, works in Ardcarne Garden Centre, and she often wonders how all this stuff grows on the side of the road, without any care being taken of them; no fertiliser, no sprays or any food, and yet, every year they come back in all their glory and make our walk a complete and utter joy.

This year, however, we have a new addition: one of the farmers on the route has a pair of pet lambs and by now, they are totally at home with human contact. Every time we walk by they come running to the gate, showing absolutely no fear of either Carol or me, or of Hope the dog. They nearly have the chat, and it shows that all animals (if trained to get used to people early enough) can be almost humanised.

This pair of lambs are, presumably, expecting a drop of milk when we pass, and I’m sure by now they must think we are miserable gits.

Remarkably, it doesn’t stop them from coming to see us whenever we pass, and I look forward every day to stopping to say hello. It’s a strange world.

Our new neighbours…

Back in 1955, as a very shy four-year-old gasun, I headed off to the national school in Creggs, where I developed the habit of chewing on the corners of all my schoolbooks.

My teacher, Julia Crean, a wonderful woman, managed to wean me from the books, but of course I then took up the equally bad habit of chewing my fingernails. And from that day to this almost, I have continued to do so, with the result that (needless to say) I have never had a nail on any finger. I say ‘almost’ because Covid-19 dictated that I was not to touch my face with my hand, and as a consequence I now have a full hand of perfectly manicured nails, and am driving my family mad as I pare and file them and clean under them – and generally look after them. And the truth is that I hate them; they stick into my other fingers, are in the way when I try to pick anything up off the table or the floor, are very strange to feel, and are a real nuisance, but sad to say they are here to stay as I would feel too guilty if I was ever to get rid of them again. And so, I can say that one good thing (or can I?) came out of Covid-19: my new nails. Maybe I’ll treat myself to a manicure!

Saying farewell to a great local lady Finally for this week, from joy to sadness, as last Friday we said goodbye to a great local lady, Colette Hanley, who died after a brave battle with illness.

Colette was one of the ‘auld stock, married to Noel, and mother to five children, and was one of the nicest and most upbeat people you would ever meet. She will be greatly missed. She was sister to the late Bernadette, my nextdoor neighbour for many years, and was my brother Duff’s mother-in-law, so I used to regard her as almost family. She always had a warm welcome for everyone, wherever you might meet.

Sadly her funeral was another that fell victim to the new Covid rules, and once again all we could do was line the roadside and try to pay our respects in that way. However, despite everything, a huge crowd gathered, in proper social distancing, to pay tribute to such a lovely woman. To Noel, and her family and friends, I express my deepest sympathy.

Colette truly was a stalwart of our community, and supported everything that happened in the area. May she rest in peace.

FarmingPeople Roscommon IFA urges local farmers to put safety first

Roscommon IFA Farm Family Chairperson, Mrs. Frances Keane, said farmers must put safety first on their farms because not doing so puts them, their children and their neighbours at risk.

“As farmers we have to take the lead role in addressing this issue and that starts at home on our own farms. There have been eight confirmed deaths on Irish farms this year.

This is not just a statistic, behind the numbers are heartbroken families,” Mrs. Keane said.

“Farmers have to put safety first on their farms. The reality of the figures of injury and death on farms is devastating for the families involved. Farmers need to be serious about recognising the dangers of their workplace. They need to minimise all risks while taking on every job, both for themselves and others,” she said.

“Covid-19 has resulted in more children and young adults being at home on farms. This increases the risk of injury and death. We are also in silage season, with contractors and machinery operators working flat out trying to get through the workload,” said Mrs. Keane.

“It is the middle of the breeding season with cows, young calves, and stock bulls which can be especially dangerous at this time of year and as the summer progresses.

Caution is also needed for those who operate quad bikes on farms. While they are a very useful tool for any farm, they are also high risk, particularly if driven too quickly or with passengers”.

Mrs. Keane said: “Farmers must slow down; plan the job out; use proper equipment; and keep others back.

There is nothing more precious than life – the work will always get done”.

Indecision within forestry service could lead to contract losses – Fitzmaurice

The level of indecision within the Forestry Service section of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is in danger of leading to Irish companies and forest owners losing out on valuable contracts, according to independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice.

Speaking on the matter, he said: “I have been contacted by a number of forest owners who applied for felling licences, but who have been left frustrated by the level of indecision and lack of progress made on their applications.

“These applications have been submitted over a year ago. But applicants are being told that their submissions are being held up due to a backlog in the workload for ecologists.

“Having spent the past three months liaising with the Forest Service on these particular applications, they have not progressed from the ecologists’ desk.

“And these are not isolated incidents. It appears as if the forestry sector is being suffocated by crippling indecision, as well as dealing with significant numbers of objections to proposed plantations.

“But the sad reality of the matter is that if felling licences continue to be held up as they are at the moment, then companies and forest owners will lose out on valuable contracts. This could also have a very negative impact on jobs.

“The minister needs to review operations within the Forestry Service to see if processes can be streamlined and if resources can be improved or increased” Deputy Fitzmaurice concluded.

Mart structure must be supported – O’Beirne Mr. John O’Beirne, Roscommon IFA Livestock Chairperson, says ongoing restrictions on marts are a significant issue for livestock farmers and the trade.

“While the marts have made huge efforts to operate under the current restrictions, the sooner we can get the auction rings reopened and marts back up and running again, while maintaining necessary Covid-19 protections, the better,” he said.

Mr. O’Beirne said marts provide an essential service to farmers and the agricultural community in terms of the livestock trade, especially open and transparent market price competition, and also se-

curity of payment.

“While online trading has been a great help and is certainly part of the future for marts, the closure and restrictions on the trade this spring have hit the livestock sector, marts and farmers. The spring is peak trading season for cattle and a lot of this trade has been lost”.

IFA strongly supports the efforts of marts and their representative bodies to reopen the services as soon as possible.

“Detailed discussions have taken place with the Department of Agriculture and protocols and procedures have been worked out, which hopefully will facilitate a return towards a more normal service as

On a sunny Sunday afternoon in March last year, I was heading home from Roscommon to Ballinahiskera, Killimor, Co. Galway, to take my mother, Philomena Quirke (nee Dervan) out to lunch.

On that journey, I started thinking about a fiddle that my grandfather, Martin Dervan from Coolfin, Abbey, Co. Galway, had made, and how even though as a child I never played music I loved looking at it and kept it on a sideboard with the bow in our sitting room at home.

My granddad was a carpenter by trade and only ever made one fiddle.

Sadly, I never met him, so maybe the fiddle made me feel close to him or maybe it would later inspire me to learn how to play a musical instrument!

Over the years I never knew where this fiddle ended up, so now, driving home I had a bee in my bonnet about finding it. I searched our old home house – now derelict and fighting off the cobwebs – and eventually found it in an upstairs bedroom in the bottom of a wardrobe. It had seen better days. It was stringless and pegless, it had a broken scroll and a broken f-hole, some woodworm holes and a little water damage, but nonetheless, I was very excited to find it again!

Initially, I thought to myself I’ll clean it off and polish it, put some old pegs and strings on it and hang it on a wall somewhere in my house in memory of my granddad. But as I was cleaning it, I couldn’t help but wonder when he made this beautiful instrument, and if he made it for someone? Curiosity got the better of me, so I used the light on my phone and looked through the broken f-hole to see if anything was written inside – and there it was, pencil on paper! I couldn’t believe it!

for her, what a lucky little girl! I was super-excited to tell my mum this great news and, in that moment, I decided that this beautifully hand-crafted instrument needed to be professionally restored back to playing condition, so I rang my friend Paul Doyle, a Luthier based in Galway.

Paul was delighted to be able to help.

According to Paul the craftsmanship involved in making this instrument was excellent, considering that in 1953, my grandfather would have had limited tools and no patterns. He may have used a textbook for a pattern or just copied another fiddle. Paul informed me of the interesting local Irish wood Martin used to make the fiddle.

The top is Douglas fir, the neck is beech, it has a pine fret board and that beautiful flamed pattern on the back is sycamore, as are the sides. Paul spent the summer months restoring the fiddle and bringing it back to life.

Martin Dervan grew up on a farm in Coolfin, Abbey, Co. Galway with his parents Michael and Margaret, brothers John and Michael and sisters Mary and Bridget. His passion for working with wood was evident from an early age. He converted a cow shed at the back of his parents’ house into a

workshop, and so began his carpentry career. He married Kathleen Galvin from Clonfert, Co. Galway in 1936.

They moved to Birr, Co. Offaly, where he continued his wooden creations, making furniture, stairs and pony traps, while Kathleen kept lodgers.

Nine years later their only child Philomena (my mother) was born. Around 1958, the family moved to Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, where once again Martin set up his workshop in an outbuilding and Kathleen continued to keep lodgers such as ESB workers, terrazzo tile workers who worked on the stairways in Portiuncula Hospital, rent collectors, etc.

Sadly, one morning in December 1962 tragedy struck the Dervan family. When Martin was walking into town, he was hit by a car crossing the road close to his home on Bridge Street, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway. He was 68 years old and died at the scene.

This was a devastating shock for his wife Kathleen and their 17-year-old daughter, Philomena. Times were tough back then, but thankfully Kathleen Dervan was a resourceful and resilient woman. Soon after Martin’s death, Kathleen went into Portiuncula Hospital and landed herself a

job in the kitchen as a cook. Now a widow, Kathleen continued with the lodging business and before long she was making the surgical gowns in the hospital. Kathleen had a passion for sewing and had a cast-iron Singer sewing machine in her house, that she managed, with help I’m sure, to bring into the hospital, where she set up shop and started mending and making theatre gowns.

Tragically for Phil and the Quirke family, history repeated itself many years later, when sadly her only son Noel died in May 1996 when he was hit by a car crossing the road to his friend’s 21st birthday party, just outside the village of Killimor. He was only 20 years old and died at the scene. This was a devastating blow for all of us. Phil’s mother Kathleen had only passed away the previous year, at age 98.

Martin clearly passed on his woodworking gift to his grandson Noel as he also had an eye for perfection when it came to working with wood. Noel’s memory lives on in many ways in our lives but especially in our home house in Ballinahiskera, where there’s a beautiful mahogany corner stand that he made in secondary school.

Last summer, mum and I called to Martin’s home house in Coolfin, where his nephew Michael Dervan was living. Michael referred to Martin as being a lovely quiet man and confirmed that he was gifted with wood.

He shared many fond memories of Martin and remembered that he had made a fiddle many years ago. I was delighted to be able to show Michael some photographs of the restored fiddle on my phone, which he enjoyed viewing. Michael recalled that Martin’s woodworking tools were given to him as a gift from my grandmother, Kathleen. A lovely gesture to keep the family woodworking tradition alive, a task that Michael certainly lived up to!

Martin’s memory and talent have been brought to life again with the restoration of his beautiful and carefully handcrafted instrument. His memory will live on forever in the music that flows from the hands that will play his fiddle! I have no doubt that the presence of this instrument in our house when I was growing up somehow inspired me to learn to play guitar and ukulele. No pressure, but I think I might just have to learn a tune or two on the fiddle in honour of my granddad, Martin Dervan!

To Declan McGarry, Nurse Mary Geoghegan, and all the wonderful staff in Oakwood Nursing Home who were always so kind and compassionate to us and Anthony during his time in there. To the excellent grave diggers who prepared his final resting place.

Thanks to Father Eugene McLoughin for the funeral mass and burial. Thanks to Margaret Harlow for the beautiful music performed by her.

Thanks to Father Fitzgerald who administered the “Last Rites” to Anthony in the Hospital and prayed for him.

As we approach the first anniversary of Mam’s death, we, here daughters Mary, Jacky, Muriel and Sharon, together with our extended families, wish to express our sincere gratitude to all who sympathised with us on our sad loss. Thanks to all who telephoned, called to our homes, sent Mass Cards, messages of condolences, floral tributes and all who travelled long distances to attend Kathleen’s removal and funeral. 7 YEARS AGO Hurlers claim Connacht IHC title

Roscommon 1-11 Mayo 0-12 Roscommon hurlers claimed the inaugural Connacht IHC title in this entertaining curtain-raiser played at McHale Park last Sunday.

The Roscommon team showed several changes from the team that lost the Nicky Rackard Cup final a week earlier but it was a well deserved win on the balance of play.

Mayo were slightly the better side in the opening half and in Sean Regan they had a magnificent free-taker and they led by four points with half-time approaching. But Liam Kilcline scored an opportunist goal in the 28th minute and then David Flaherty pointed to ensure that the sides went in at half-time Roscommon 1-5 Mayo 0-8.

Roscommon’s other scorers were Niall Kilroy (0-2) and Robbie Fallon (0-2) with points. Sean Regan scored seven of Mayo’s eight first-half points.

Regan and Donal O’Brien pointed early in the second half to gave Mayo an advantage.

Roscommon improved and Cathal Dolan and Robbie Fallon levelled the scores by the 40th minute and then took the lead with points from Gary Fallon and Robbie Fallon.

Despite pointed frees from Sean Regan, Roscommon stayed ahead and further points from the Fallon brothers Gary and Robbie saw Roscommon ahead by two with the game going into injury-time.

4 YEARS AGO Convent into All-Ireland Final All-Ireland Senior Colleges Camogie ‘C’ Semi-Final: Convent of Mercy, Roscommon 1-9 Carrigaline CS (Cork) 1-7 This was a high-quality semi-final and the Roscommon girls edged home to reach the All-Ireland final on the 5th of March.

The first half was very low scoring with Roscommon ahead at half-time by 0-3 to 0-2.

However, two early second-half points saw the Cork girls ahead.

But five points in a row saw the Roscommon girls establish a lead that they were not to lose. The points came from Rachel Fitzmaurice, Grainne Whyte, Leah Rowe (2 frees) and Niamh Farrell and the home side led 0-9 to 0-4 with 50 minutes gone.

The Cork girls responded with two points but then Eala Ni Cumhaill scored a fantastic goal to put the Convent girls in a very strong position. The Roscommon girls had done enough and they will now face Rochfortbridge in the final on March 5th.

Kilbride go from underdogs to top dogs Truly Irish Roscommon Ladies Football Senior Club Final: Kilbride 6-9 St Brigid’s 2-9 < SEAMUS DUKE

Kilbride ladies footballers made history in Knockcroghery last Saturday when, appearing in their first senior final, they swept to their first ever title, playing some of the most exciting and exhilarating football that this reporter had seen in many a long day. St. Brigid’s contributed to a superb game as well, but they had no answer to the fleet-footed and superbly coached Kilbride side who won the title in magnificent style.

Played before the biggest crowd seen at a ladies county final in many years, and on an overcast but dry evening, both sides served up a feast of attacking football. After a slow start, Kilbride exploded into the game and while they had several superb performers, I am sure they won’t complain if I single out Siobhán Tully for special mention. The diminutive Roscommon county player was simply unmarkable on the day. Her work rate, searing pace and superb ball skills were worth the admission fee alone, and even St. Brigid’s team officials admitted after the game that they just couldn’t handle her on the day. Not far behind was Tara Taylor who put on an exhibition of midfield play throughout for the winners.

For the winners, aside from the brilliant Siobhán Tully, Aoife Feeley, Maire Lohan and Rochelle Mullaney and Katie Kelly were excellent in defence. Tara Taylor was outstanding at midfield, while up front Fiona Tully, Eilish Fannon and Casey Keane were all very prominent. For St. Brigid’s, Claire O’Brien, Claire Grehan, Aine O’Brien and Jenny Conlon were best.

Ladies’ campaign is back on track Lidl Ladies NFL Division 3: Roscommon 2-12 Leitrim 1-5

Roscommon ladies produced one of their best performances in the recent past to overpower neighbours Leitrim at Ballyfarnon last Sunday. It was a timely win for Roscommon after their loss to Wexford the previous Sunday.

Roscommon started well and Sheila Brady fisted home a goal in the 4th minute but two points from the Leitrim sharp-shooter Aine Tighe saw them back in the game soon after and the same player scored a well-taken goal to give Leitrim the lead.

Roscommon replied with a superb goal from Natalie McHugh and a Jenny Downey point saw Roscommon three in front. By half-time the home side were three to the good with further points from Jenny Downey, Siobhan Tully (2) and Sinead Kenny.

Points from Jenny Downey and Rachel Ryan extended Roscommon’s lead on the restart.

Leitrim then enjoyed a period of supremacy but they could not get past the brilliant Rachel Timothy who made some breathtaking saves in the Roscommon goal.

Roscommon finished with points from Jenny Downey, Siobhan Tully and Laura Fleming to secure an excellent win.

Cup thriller in Cardiff revives memories of New York! < SEAMUS DUKE

With the ongoing absence of live sport due to Covid-19, TV companies have been on a nostalgia overload over the past few months. The 2020 FA Cup Final was due to have been played last weekend, so the BBC filled the vacuum by showing some of the best finals of the past (in a series of programmes).

One of the games featured was the clash of West Ham and Liverpool in 2006. Played in Cardiff, the game ended in a 3-3 draw, with Steven Gerrard, pictured right, scoring one of the greatest goals ever seen in a cup final – in injury-time – to hand his side a lifeline. Liverpool went on to win the final on penalties. It struck me that many Roscommon GAA fans will remember where they were when that game was played.

That’s because the cup final was played on the same weekend on which Roscommon played New York in the Connacht Championship. Over 4,000 Rossies were in ‘The Big Apple’ for the big match.

Early that Saturday morning, the sports bars in the general Times Square area were packed with Rossies who were up early to enjoy the action from Cardiff.

In one such establishment, I watched the game alongside at least 150 Roscommon supporters, and

the atmosphere was electric. It was a fantastic FA Cup final, but for many of us it was only one of the many highlights of what was one of the greatest weekends for anyone who was lucky enough to have been there. The stories from that weekend still abound. It was the trip of a lifetime.

Meanwhile, last Sunday night The Sunday Game featured the 2017 Connacht final between Roscommon and Galway. Kevin McStay, Roscommon manager at the time, was the special guest in studio. That brilliant win has been well documented elsewhere but it was a real eye-opener to see all the really talented players who are not in the Roscommon set-up for one reason or another three short years on.

They include the Murtagh brothers, Conor Devaney, Sean Mullooly, John McManus, Cian Connolly, Niall McInerney, Seanie McDermott and Ian Kilbride, to mention just a few. For Roscommon to come back and win the title again in 2019 was a phenomenal achievement.

But back to the 2017 final, and it was a day that few Roscommon fans will ever forget. Two outstanding goals, a dominant performance and a nine-point win all added up to one of those days that will do down in the rich folklore of Roscommon football.

Needless to say Kevin McStay spoke well about the occasion on Sunday night. The segment brought back some great memories of a special day and one of Roscommon’s sweetest ever wins.

The Bundesliga continued with a second round of games last weekend. It would appear that there have been few problems with the logistics. It is a signal that we could see Premier League action return in the UK in the next few weeks.

There are also plans to test League of Ireland players in the coming weeks with a view to a return to action here.

However, the GAA scene is altogether more difficult to predict.

Carton tops!

Online darts continued last week in Roscommon with some great darts on show. There was also some clinical finishing; Tomas Rushe with the top finish of 108.

Paul Carton had wins over David Boyle (30) and David Cafferky (4-2) at the quarter-final and semi-final stages. On the other side James Sharkey took a 3-2 win over Seamus Naughton before a 4-3 win over Martin Fleming took him all the way to the final.

The final went to the wire. Nine 100+ scores including four 140s for Sharkey were countered by seven 100+ scores for Carton, with six of them 140s. Both players’ best legs were 15-darters. It was Carton’s day as he edged it on a 5-4 scoreline.

Kolo is new head coach at Buccaneers Kolo Kiripati has been appointed Head Coach at Buccaneers RFC as the Athlone club prepares for the resumption of rugby in the forthcoming season. The powerful forward played for ten seasons with the Pirates whom he skippered to promotion to Division 1A in 2016/17.

Kiripati replaced Peter O’Donnell at the midlanders where Henry Bryce will be his backs coach and David Henshaw will assist with the forwards as scrum coach. Backrower Kolo hails from Samoa and grew up in New Zealand where he honed his rugby.

Irish racing returns behind closed doors with strict new protocols in place at Naas on Monday week the 8th of June. There are 53 flat meetings and 22 national hunt meetings from the 22nd June up to the end of July. There will be eight-race cards run at every opportunity where stable capacity allows, with the protocols requiring one stable per horse for hygiene reasons.

Roscommon will race on the 15th and 22nd of June with flat cards and a national hunt card on the 24th June.

They race twice in July with a flat fixture on the 7th and a jumping meeting on the 13th. Our neighbours in Kilbeggan will run a meeting on the 29th June, 2 meetings in July on the 10th and 17th and again on the 1st August. Sligo have their first flat meeting on the 2nd July and Ballinrobe have a two-day fixture on the 20th, on the flat and the 21st over jumps.

The Galway festival is being maintained as a seven-day event but there are significant changes to the traditional race programme. The opening two days will host Flat races only while the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday fixtures will be all National Hunt.

The meeting will conclude, in the first two days of August, with two all-Flat cards. The Galway Plate and Galway Hurdle will be run on the Wednesday and Thursday as normal.

Good news announced on Wednesday that RTE 2 will be covering 2 races each evening live, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the first 5 weekends of racing. Hugh Cahill will present the new run of live coverage with guest analysts joining regulars Jane Mangan, Ted Walsh and Ruby Walsh.

The programmes will run from 7-8pm on Fridays and 5-6pm on Saturdays and Sundays will include replays from earlier races each evening. Coverage will include both Guineas classics on the 12th and 13th with the Derby on the 27th. This coverage is very welcome for all racing fans who do not have access to satellite coverage.

Irish jockey Robbie Downey, given a 6-month ban by France-Galop for cocaine abuse, has been granted a licence by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board and can ride in Ireland when racing resumes on June 8.

Downey denied the accusation, saying he did not take the drug and argued the positive sample must have come from

environmental contamination.

The return to racing in Britain next Monday will be marked by a return to the newspaper shelves in print form of the Racing Post which has been digitally produced and only available on the web since late March.

Racing at Newcastle on Monday has a huge entry of 369 horses for an 8-race card, around twice the normal for this time of year. The behind-closed-doors meeting will be the first to take place in Britain since March 17th and with 72-hour declarations the final fields for Newcastle will be published on Friday.

The 2nd at Kempton has even more entries with 454 horses for a 9-race card. Wednesday’s racing at Newcastle on Wednesday has 265 entries for a 10-race card.

However, on the other hand the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup has been cancelled due to Covid-19, with officials at Ascot citing international travel complications. The meeting, which sees riders represent teams from Great Britain and Ireland, Europe, the rest of the world and a female-only group, was scheduled to take place on August 10, but will not take place this year.

The Stewards of the Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee have announced proposals to start the Autumn 2020 Point to Point Season the week commencing 14th September 2020. The Autumn 2020 Point to Point fixture list will be published in the coming weeks and the provisional summary of races will follow.

In Europe France’s premier jumps contests the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris and the Grand Courses des Haies will remain at its traditional home course of Auteuil, ending speculation that they could be transferred to Pau with other races. They are country’s equivalent of the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Champion Hurdle. They are scheduled for June 11th but as Auteuil is in France’s “Red Zone” they could be transferred to the autumn.

In the US the Belmont Stakes, traditionally the final leg of the US Triple Crown, will now be run as the opening race on the 20th June at a reduced distance of 1m1f, instead of its usual 1m4f, and take place behind closed doors at Belmont Park. In its new slot, the $1 million Classic precedes the Kentucky Derby on September 5, four weeks ahead of the Preakness on October 3.

REFLECTIONS ON SPORTING INSPIRATIONS

Birth of a legend ‘The lad from Whitehall looked as carefree as if playing on a beach. The Soviet midfielders didn’t look so happy; indeed they resembled hens that had suddenly found a cub in their midst. John Keats wished that his first book of poems would explode upon the world: it didn’t so much as get a single review. I doubt if Liam Brady harboured any such ambition, but on that grey, windy afternoon long ago, he most certainly exploded on to the football world’ – Con Houlihan on Liam Brady’s international debut in 1974, when the teenager inspired the Republic of Ireland to a 3-0 win over the Soviet Union in Dalymount Park I had been planning to write about someone else this week – then we ran out of milk.

As I drove to the shop last Sunday, I was joined by Joe Molloy and John Barnes. On Off the Ball on Newstalk, the host (Molloy) could hardly get a word in with Barnes, the former Watford, Liverpool and England great. But that was fine. Barnes is a fascinating interviewee. You could listen to his cogent, intelligent, fair-minded arguments all day long (but I was only going for the milk).

Still, the milk could wait. I stayed in the car for half an hour or so, entertained, intrigued and educated by genial John…Joe and I hanging on to every word. Barnes is the antithesis of the stereotype (if it still exists) of the Footballer With Nothing to Say. John is fascinating, brilliant, now an established and much-in-demand pundit, commentator, campaigner and public speaker. It was good radio.

Outside the shop, two men observed social distancing as they leaned against a car, ice cream cones in hand (flakes and all). Just as I was about to get out of my vehicle, John Barnes, unprompted, and without any sense that he was deliberately appealing to an Irish radio audience, made reference to a player who had greatly influenced him. “…My favourite player ever – and I know it’s not Britain because it’s the Republic of Ireland – was Liam Brady. He is the greatest player from this part of the world, ever”.

That’s what John Barnes said – and he meant it. (He’s far too thoughtful and intelligent to bother with the business of trying to curry favour with an audience). He mentioned Brady only in passing, as part of a typically nuanced answer to a question about a perception that Barnes had not realised his full potential in an England shirt. But he said it, and he meant it…bypassing Paul Gascoigne, Glenn Hoddle, Thierry Henry, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo…the lot.

‘Liam Brady…the greatest player from this part of the world, ever’.

After I’d bought the milk – and a 99 Flake – I was tempted to share the good news with the two men leaning against the car in the gentle summer sunshine.

Brady was, of course, always on my ‘Heroes’ list – John Barnes has just brought him forward.

Long before Liam Brady became one of the Three Wise Men of soccer punditry, he had another life…as a wizard in football boots. Brady left his native Dublin to join Arsenal as a shy 15-year-old in 1971. Making his first team debut in 1973, he soon became a fans’ favourite, renowned for his magical left foot. A superb passer of the ball, Brady was an attacking midfielder, an old-style dribbler. He scored many superb goals, including a Goal of the Season contender against Spurs (see YouTube). Playing with the joy and carefree innocence of a boy expressing himself in the schoolyard, he was Arsenal’s cultured playmaker. He went on to conquer Italy too. The brilliant international career which began with such joy in ’74 ended in some sorrow, through no fault of Brady’s. Jack Charlton was talking the plain prose of ‘putting them under pressure’; there was no space for Liam Brady’s poetry.

‘For a year I had lived with the possibility of Liam Brady’s transfer to another club in the same way that, in the late fifties and early sixties, American teenagers had lived with the possibility of the impending Apocalypse. I knew it would happen, yet, even so, I allowed myself to hope; I fretted about it daily, read all the papers scrupulously for hints that he might sign a new contract, studied his onfield relationship with the other players at the club carefully in case it revealed signs of bonds too strong to be broken. I had never felt so intensely about an Arsenal player; for five years he was the focus of the team, and therefore the centre of a very important part of myself, and the consciousness of his rumoured desire to leave Arsenal was always with me, a small shadow on any X-ray of my wellbeing…

‘Liam Brady was one of the best two or three passers of the last twenty years, and this in itself was why he was revered by every single Arsenal fan, but for me there was more to it than that.

I worshipped him because he was great, and I worshipped him because, in the parlance, if you cut him he would bleed Arsenal; but there was a third thing too. He was intelligent. This intelligence manifested itself primarily in his passing, which was incisive and imaginative and constantly surprising’.

The Liam Brady final May 1979, and in Rooskey, a major crisis was unfolding. George Latimer was a genial man, but by now, he had our TV for the best part of two weeks. When our television broke down, my father had dropped it off with George, the TV repair man in Mohill. Several days passed.

No word from George. No sound, and certainly no vision. And the FA Cup final was imminent.

Arsenal against Manchester United, a glamour pairing, with particular Irish interest.

Thank God (and George), calamity was avoided. My father, briefed on the enormity of what was at stake, made another foray into Mohill, this time returning with the repaired television, just minutes before kick-off in the FA Cup Final.

Inspired by Liam Brady’s dribbling skills and vision, Arsenal went 2-0 up. The ending raised an ordinary game to classic status. Gordon McQueen scrambled in an 86th minute goal, then Sammy McIlroy equalised two minutes later.

Advantage United.

Liam Brady had one more arrow in his quiver.

As despondent Arsenal teammates wilted around him, Brady made one final penetrating run, pushing the ball wide to Graham Rix. An inviting deep cross, and Alan Sunderland stretches to connect at the far post. John Motson (in commentary): “It’s there! 3-2! Arsenal are back in front, through Alan Sunderland!” It was Arsenal’s cup – and Liam Brady’s final.

Around this time, a Sunday newspaper reported that Leeds United (the club I supported then and now) were poised to bid 200,000 pounds’ sterling to buy Brady! The headline quoted a source as saying that the Leeds players were prepared to walk to London to get their man. Leeds never got Liam Brady, but he was on the move. In 1980, he went to Italy, joining Juventus, with whom he won two Serie A titles, before going on to further success with other Italian clubs. To this day, his name is revered by many of those who saw him play in Italy. Brady returned to English football in 1987, joining West Ham. In his last ever game, he scored a superb goal (it’s on YouTube), the ecstatic home fans invading the pitch in celebration.

Under Jack Charlton, Ireland qualified for the 1988 European Championships and the World Cups of 1990 and ’94. Fate would not smile on Brady however. He was superb during the 1988 qualification campaign, only to miss out on the finals due to a combination of injury and suspension. In 1990, Charlton (as detailed in Rowan’s book) effectively dispensed with Brady. Riled by pressure from media and fans, Charlton started Brady in Ireland’s last friendly before the World Cup, against Germany in Dublin. The manager then ruthlessly substituted Brady after half an hour, later inferring (perhaps correctly) that this was one hero who was past his best. ‘Brady remonstrated with Charlton in the dressing room’ wrote Rowan, ‘telling him he had been humiliated by being replaced so early and it could have waited till half-time…in the hotel afterwards, Brady announced his retirement from international football’.

It was sad that the majestic Brady was destined to miss out on Ireland’s greatest days. Ireland wouldn’t have made history by getting to the Euro ’88 finals were it not for Brady’s consistent brilliance in the qualifying games. Con Houlihan summed it up: ‘The good peasant plants and tends the vine even though he may not be around to drink the wine’.

More than a decade on from that summer’s day in Rooskey when we’d cheered Liam Brady’s Wembley magic, I went to Lansdowne Road for his testimonial match (against Finland). It was 30 years ago this month. Maybe I only had eyes for the star attraction, but I genuinely thought Brady was the best player on the pitch. He may have been in his twilight as a footballer, but he still stood out. Every touch oozed class.

He was a joy to watch; all you could do was lament the march of time.

Before the final whistle, he was called off, this time so that he could experience the love of his people. An emotional ovation shook Lansdowne. Then he was gone, back into the embrace of the city from where his wizardry first announced itself to the world. It was sad to see our hero disappear. How he had graced the game. He was the carefree boy who never quite grew up. Liam Brady played the game in real life the way we played in our dreams.
