I was injured in a car accident last year.

My ex-boyfriend was driving too fast and he crashed the car into a wall. I was not seriously injured but I have been left with a horrible scar on my leg. I would like to have plastic surgery to improve the scar. Please advise me of my rights.

It is not uncommon for a person who suffers an injury in a road traffic accident or otherwise to be left with scar tissue which forms after the injury heals. If the scar is the result of an injury received due to the negligence of another, you should be entitled to compensation.

Such scar injury cases are often complicated.

Beyond the physical pain of corrective surgeries, a scar victim can also suffer emotional and mental trauma from the change in their appearance caused by a disfiguring scar. When considering the implications of a scar injury, the age of the scar victim, the severity of the scar, the permanency of the scar and the number of corrective surgeries needed must be kept in mind.

Expert medical advice from plastic surgeons and other medical practitioners is essential.

The costs of any specialist medical treatment required, together with other out-of-pocket expenses, will form part of the compensation claim.

Yes, like you said, exciting! Anyways, I think one thing we’ve learnt from Covid is that we should be nicer to people. So I say well done to Leo, Micheál, Eamon & Co. Be nicer to people? You’re going soft!

What we didn’t like…

The Government has been less than surefooted in its handling of the admittedly unprecedented challenge of trying to facilitate a reopening of schools (in September) in the midst of a pandemic. News that the Government now aims to reopen schools fully – apparently without social distancing – came as a surprise to teachers and parents. More twists and turns to follow in this saga, we suspect.

A diary of the times that are (part 14) Sunday

Lockdown has afforded an opportunity to enjoy more TV/radio/Netflix, etc. Today I came across ‘Everton – Howard’s Way’, a documentary on Howard Kendall’s reign as Everton manager in the 1980s. It was very enjoyable and nostalgic, with great contributions from former players such as Andy Gray, Peter Reid and the wonderful Neville Southall. It was a reminder too of how gifted the Irish international Kevin Sheedy was. Everton had unprecedented success under Kendall, who sadly died in 2015, aged just 69.

It’s certainly given me an appetite for some of the acclaimed sports documentaries which I’m aware of but have yet to see, including The Last Dance (Michael Jordan), Lance (Lance Armstrong) and recommended ones on Sunderland FC and Leeds United FC. On Off the Ball on Newstalk, another great Irish footballer, Kevin Moran, was interviewed by Joe Molloy. After winning two All-Ireland senior medals as an outstanding young GAA player with Dublin, Moran sensationally switched codes, joining Manchester United in 1978, at the age of 22. I still remember how shocked my school friends and I were on hearing this news. A Dublin GAA star joining Manchester United! Moran went on to have a great career in English football, and with Ireland. The podcast of the interview is well worth listening to.

Finally, on Sunday night, while channel-hopping, I joined ‘Philomena’ about 15 minutes in (BBC 1). It’s the critically acclaimed true story of an Irish woman’s tireless search for the son she had been forced to give up for adoption.

An unmarried teenage mother in 1950s’ Ireland, Philomena had placed her baby son in the care of the now notorious Magdalene Laundries. Incredibly, the nuns and priests

who ran such institutions often sold babies of ‘shamed mothers’ to childless American couples. As one reviewer wrote: “It was a baby-farm business model that ran on cruelty and hypocrisy”.

This grim, emotional story – which has some extraordinary twists – is very well told in the film.

Judi Dench is superb as Philomena, and Steve Coogan (as the journalist who helped uncover the truth) is excellent too.

Monday

And the crowds, they gathered in their thousands (well, hundreds, at least). And they were all drawn to the one magical thing. Young and old, they swarmed towards the light, the opening, the wonder of it all.

Some of those observing this strange movement of people mused that a UFO may had landed. Others whispered that there might have been a religious apparition. Others didn’t whisper at all, they just stopped what they were doing and followed the masses.

And on and on they went, these people, drawn by the light, drawn by the promise of something new, of some hope midst the darkness and the gloom. And to a man (actually, it was mostly women) they showed no fear or apprehension. They weren’t afraid, they didn’t worry for their safety. They were brave. Some held the hands of loved ones (immediate family only)…others felt the comfort of the presence of friends, some brave souls ventured forward alone.

Yes, they were brave, and they were curious, and they would not be stopped or held back. On and on they moved, followed now by an inquisitive and intrigued media posse, the gathering growing with every hour, as darkness turned to light. And still the observers wondered might it be a

UFO or a religious apparition.

But no, it was just Penneys’ reopening.

Later on Monday

3.30 pm, and I’m walking on the Athlone Road, enjoying the sunshine and wondering if the predicted thunder and lightning is bypassing Roscommon.

The traffic is steady. A vehicle whooshes by. Helpfully, it says ‘Horses’ on the back, and sure enough, there are horses inside it. Then another truck passes, also heading for Roscommon, also with horses.

At once, I feel delighted that there’s a race meeting in Roscommon today, but the sight of the flying horses is also a reminder of all that we have lost this summer. The weather is beautiful, it’s a Monday in June, and the horses are heading for the starting line. Hopefully the punters/casual race-goers will be in hot pursuit soon!

Tuesday

On Virgin Media’s Tonight Show,

Green Party TD Neasa Hourigan and Fine Gael TD Damien English are in studio. On Monday, their parties, with Fianna Fáil, unveiled a draft Programme for Government. Happy days, Damien might have been thinking.

Neasa was one of the Greens’ negotiating team. But after signing off on the deal, she abstained when the plan was put to a vote at parliamentary party level. Matt Cooper then asked if she’d vote for it in her capacity as a party member.

Neasa – who helped negotiate the deal – said she couldn’t commit at the moment. She’d have to read it again!

Matt arched an eyebrow upwards.

Damien? He must have felt like a prospective partner in an arranged marriage who has just realised that the ceremony could be cancelled!

Wednesday

Some years after his playing peak, Willie Thorne, who sadly died in the early hours today, visited Roscommon for a snooker exhibition. With Thorne was a young man who would go on to be-

come arguably the greatest player of all time – Ronnie O’Sullivan.

The duo played an exhibition in Roscommon town. It’s likely that this is the trip which O’Sullivan was referring to when he paid tribute to Thorne on Wednesday.

O’Sullivan tweeted: ‘…a beautiful man, big heart, great company.

Had a week in Ireland with him I’ll never forget. Will be missed by a lot of people in the snooker world. RIP WT’.

Willie Thorne may not have been one of the all-time great players, but he belonged to snooker’s golden era. And he was a super player, renowned for his century breaks (and maximum 147s). He was twice a quarter-finalist in the World Championships.

His impact in the sport was significant. He was one of the game’s greatest ever characters, immensely popular with fellow players and fans. He went on to become a top commentator. Aged just 66, Willie Thorne died in Spain after a short illness. Snooker fans all over the world are mourning one of the legends of the sport. He will be greatly missed.

Where the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic triggers the collapse of a company, liquidators will need to be satisfied that directors’ efforts to balance continuing to trade and protecting jobs against creditors’ exposure were bona fide. Directors should bear in mind that a liquidator will also investigate actions taken in the pre-pandemic period.

In response to the Covid-19 crisis, the UK Government recently published a Bill containing measures suspending wrongful trading for a 4-month period from 1 March 2020.

As such, companies can continue to trade whilst insolvent without the threat of personal liability in these special circumstances. To date, no

such measures have been introduced in Ireland. Consequently, directors who are concerned about the potential for insolvent trading should implement risk mitigation measures without delay. Such measures may include increasing the frequency of board meetings, accurately documenting board decisions, preparing cash flow projections based on assumptions underpinning their decision to continue to trade, availing of emergency State supports such as the Temporary Wage Support Scheme, and seeking professional advice.

128 days on, green light for Micheál? < PAUL HEALY

Michael Gove thinks it’s all over – and it probably is – but that pesky ‘democracy’ bit still has to be overcome!

If a week is supposedly (and famously) a long time in politics, then 128 days is…well, a very, very long time.

Finally…finally…finally… to considerable interest, some enthusiasm, some apathy and some cynicism, a Programme for Government has been agreed between Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Green Party.

And while each party’s grassroots (members) have to approve the deal – that’s the pesky democracy bit – it does look as if political obituaries of Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin will need to be rewritten.

Martin is facing some opposition to the deal within his own

party, and certainly the Green Party membership could vote either way – but the FF leader still looks very likely to be the next Taoiseach. Hence the congratulations already issued in the House of Commons by the silver-tongued Michael Gove, who sent good wishes across the Irish Sea to “Taoiseachelect Micheál Martin”.

If, as he’s expected to, Martin gets across the line, he will have successfully avoided those pages in the history books which were being reserved for him under the heading ‘First FF leader never to be Taoiseach’.

If the new Coalition gets the…er, green light, then we’re into historic ‘Revolving Taoiseach’ mode. And once you start revolving Taoisigh, you get used to it (I imagine). So, it’s an intriguing new future; Martin in the top job until the

end of 2022, then the second coming of Leo (Varadkar taking over for two and a half more years).

There is some irony in the fact that Martin is taking over at a time when his party is languishing in the polls, while Varadkar is stepping down when he’s just burst the pollometer (75% rating in an Irish Times poll, FG flying too).

Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil grassroots will endorse the deal, although there are rumblings of discontent in FF particularly. Amongst those opposing any love-in with Fine Gael is Roscommon councillor, Orla Leyden.

If the new Coalition gets over the line, Senator Eugene Murphy will suddenly find himself as the only Govern-

ment Oireachtas member who is based in Co. Roscommon (Deputy Frank Feighan of FG now represents the sprawling Sligo/Leitrim constituency, which takes in part of North Roscommon).

Meanwhile, as matters stand (and a week is a long time in…you know the rest) our high profile Independent TDs Michael Fitzmaurice and Denis Naughten appear to be out of the ‘Government equation’. Of course that could change. Both men were involved in Government formation talks, but not in actual Programme for Government talks! They are both understood to be studying the latter document as we speak – that’s 140 pages or so, just over one for every day of the tortuously long negotiation process.

First-time TD Claire Kerrane

(Sinn Féin) looks set for opposition, which is not a bad place to be just now. She is likely to be sharing those benches with Fitzmaurice and Naughten, with Murphy wearing the Govt. jersey in the Senate, and it’s anyone’s guess how that landscape will impact on the political dynamic here in Roscommon/Galway.

But if the Greens vote to scupper the deal, while Sinn Féin are still unlikely to get a “We’ve had a cancellation” call, Deputies Fitzmaurice and Naughten could very quickly come back into play and find that FF & FG want to speak to them again!

Another election cannot be ruled out, but pragmatism is almost certain to prevail. The Greens are likely to come on board. Micheál Martin can probably start looking for Louis Copeland’s number.

The Covid pandemic has introduced many new terms – lockdown, cocooning, social distancing – but the meaning of ‘we’re in this together’ touches the hearts and souls of each and every one of our citizens”.

All photographs will be presented in an online exhibition later this year, making the job of adjudicator Brian Farrell that bit easier. School principal Mary in weekly call to pupils!

A local school principal has been supplying students with goodie bags every week since the lockdown!

Since March 12th all schools have been closed due to Covid-19, however provisions for school meals were still in place and it was advised by the Department of Education and Skills that this initiative should continue until the end of the school year.

With some confusion as to the logistics, Mary Lynskey, Principal of Tibohine NS, decided to take it upon herself to supply each student with goodie bags every week. Mary sought help from her local family business to source the goods.

Mary packed the parcels each week and spent a day out on the road delivering the goodie bags to all students in Tibohine NS.

She said that she looks forward to her “day out” each week and loves to see the children and parents.

“It is a wonderful oppertuntiy to keep in touch with the school community while maintaining social distancing” she said.

Mary would like to thank Patrick and Padraic Mitchell of Mitchell’s shop in Frenchpark and their suppliers.

Boyle man David McKenna recently ran over 290km to raise funds for the St. Patrick’s Community Hospital Patient Comfort Fund. The facility, located in Carrickon-Shannon, provides a vital service for people from Leitrim and North Roscommon. What a great gesture

by David! David, a keen runner and a member of Boyle GAA Club and Carrick Hurling Club, ran a minimum of 7km each day in May (routes in Boyle and Carrickon-Shannon).

Proceeds of €444.25 will be presented later this week.

David wishes to thank everyone for their support and generosity, including Noel Fallon and Eamon Flanagan (who provided David’s running gear).

590 people waiting for driving test in Roscommon < PAUL HEALY

590 people are waiting for driving tests in Roscommon, with a further 691 on a waiting list in Athlone, and 434 more in Carrick-on-Shannon.

These figures are up to date as of 10th of June last.

Driving instruction and testing has been on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and there is growing concern over the backlog.

Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane is calling on outgoing Minister for Transport Shane Ross to publish plans for a return of driving tests. She says that nationwide, there are 55,000 people on the waiting list.

Deputy Kerrane, who recently acquired the figures from the Road Safety Authority, says the numbers waiting have “skyrocketed”.

She added: “There is now an urgent need for clear plans as to how driving lessons and driving tests can be reintroduced in a safe manner. Perspex dividing screens, PPE for instructors and testers and shorter driving routes all need to be examined”.

Deputy Kerrane told the Roscommon People: “By now, driving instructors, examiners and their unions should have been consulted along with the Road Safety Authority and the Department of Transport. We now need a plan on how we get over 55,000 people through their driving test”.

HAPPY HUB! Progress on Food Units welcomed

Progress on the exciting Food Incubation Units’ project in Castlerea is likely to result in the creation of a “large number” of jobs and provide a welcome boost to the area.

That’s the view of Cathaoirleach of Roscommon Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice who has welcomed news that the tender for the Food Incubation Units is about to go live.

The new build will see advanced food units built at the Demesne site behind the Hub Complex in Castlerea. The build is estimated to cost €1.5 million and closing date for tenders will be the 15th of July.

Cllr. Fitzmaurice said: “The stateof-the-art units along with associated office space is due to open in early 2021. These units will allow start-up food businesses to bring their products to market in a short timeframe in

an approved facility.

“We have been working very hard behind the scenes in conjunction with the Community and Enterprise Section of Roscommon County Council to finalise design documents over the past few months.

“We want to thank the Council staff who have put a huge effort into advancing this project. We would also like to thank our architects, Collins Boyd”.

Cllr. Fitzmaurice also acknowledged the support of Minister Michael Ring and the Department of Rural & Community Development.

He added: “This is a very positive addition to Castlerea and West Roscommon and we are very hopeful Pictured (back) Cllr. ‘Name and shame illegal dumpers’ Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane is calling for people who are engaged in illegal dumping to be “named and shamed”.

She raised the need for tougher laws with Minister Richard Bruton in the Dáil.

Deputy Kerrane said: “The issue of illegal dumping is only getting worse. There are a number of blackspots across counties Roscommon and Galway.

“It is extremely frustrating for the majority who pay for their bins, separate their waste and do so consciously.

“I’ve recently been dealing with a litter warden who has told me that in many cases all they can do is send a warning letter to the perpetrator. This is not good enough”.

Deputy Kerrane said that it was time to get tough on those who choose to dump their rubbish wherever they please.

“We need to better resource our local authorities to ensure they have an adequate number of litter wardens, we need to increase litter fines and we need to ultimately bring waste management back under the control of local authorities rather than numerous private companies.

“I would go as far as saying we need to name and shame those who are destroying our communities with their waste”.

newsbriefs Junctions on N4 at Croghan and Cootehall: safety works’ update Deputy Frank Feighan has been informed that the design and implementation of proposed safety improvement works at junctions on the N4 at Croghan and Cootehall are being progressed by Roscommon County Council.

In response to Deputy Feighan’s recent parliamentary question on the issue, Gary Lynch of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) said: “Funding for the scheme has been provided to the Council this year by Transport Infrastructure Ireland and I understand that the Council’s negotiations with landowners to acquire necessary lands for the works are at an advanced stage”.

Kerrane presses Ross on funding for sports groups Sinn Féin TD for Roscommon/Galway Claire Kerrane has asked the Minister for Sport Shane Ross to put in place grants to support local sporting organisations that have not been immune to the impacts of Covid-19.

Deputy Kerrane said: “Local sporting organisations and clubs have not been immune to the impact of Covid-19.

We know the important role that these clubs play in many peoples’ lives, especially our young people.

“I have asked Minister Ross to make funding available to these clubs in the form of grants. In his reply to me, the Minister has advised that his Department is looking at developing a Sport Recovery Action Plan, in consultation with the sector.

“I have stressed the importance of grassroots sporting organisations and clubs being part of this consultation and every effort must be made to ensure that these clubs are listened to and heard”.

Dumping in Ballaghaderreen.

Education summer scheme welcomed Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has welcomed the Department of Education’s decision to run an expanded summer scheme to meet the needs of children with additional educational needs.

The scheme will be available to a wide range of students with severe to moderate needs, autism, Down syndrome, and children with audio and visual impairments. The scheme will be available both through participating schools and in the home. DEIS schools will also have the opportunity to run literacy and numeracy camps.

“We are all too aware of the impact which school closures have had on pupils with special educational needs in particular” Senator Murphy told the Roscommon People.

Bord na MĂłna to start Enhanced Peatland Rehabilitation Scheme Bord na MĂłna has suspended harvesting and commenced work on its Enhanced Peatland Rehabilitation Scheme (EPRS).

The company says the EPRS provides clarity for employees who have been concerned by the ongoing uncertainty around planning for peat harvesting which has become increasingly challenged since last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s High Court case.

The company will now commence EPRS work that will involve 65,000 hectares (c.160,000 acres) of its bogs this summer.

EPRS, which is of international significance, was announced last October as a key component of Bord na MĂłnaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s move away from peat.

Deputy Denis Naughten has welcomed the â&#x20AC;&#x153;clarityâ&#x20AC;? provided by the Bord na Mona decision. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As I pointed out to An Taoiseach recently, it was completely

unsustainable to have the livelihoods of 360 Bord na Mona families dependent on a peat harvest this summer where there was absolutely no guarantee that peat harvesting would be allowed to recommence pending the complex planning process that company must go through,â&#x20AC;? said Denis Naughten. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the interim priority had to be given to the need for job security for Bord na MĂłna staff, their families and the economy of many small towns and villages across the midland countiesâ&#x20AC;?.

On the rehabilitation work, he said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;This work will also provide new opportunities for communities right across the Midland counties as there is a considerable land bank, where peat extraction has already ceased, that will flood naturally and where work on rehabilitation can start. This work would include the provision

of recreational facilities such as walking and cycling trails, which would be less than two hoursâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; travel from Dublin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The decision has already been taken, as part of Project Ireland 2040, to develop a 35,000-acre national wetland park on the Mount Dillon bog complex in counties Roscommon and Longford. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A further example of the opening of bog land for public access is the Ballinasloe parkland project, which would utilise the cutaway bogs outside the town of Ballinasloe. It is envisaged that it will form part of the DublinGalway greenway. Public access alone is already attracting over 50,000 visitors a year to Mount Lucas in County Offalyâ&#x20AC;?.

Deputy Naughten said that this decision does in the short term provide security of employment for local staff.

by Minister Paschal Donohoe, whose mother hails from County Roscommon. This was only the start of a really enthusiastic, ambitious effort to connect people from Roscommon all over the world. Little did we know in December how important this would become.

Roll forward to March 2020 and Covid-19 puts a stop to everything which is considered ‘normal’ – the chance to meet up, the chance to return home for the weekend, the chance to fly home for summer holidays or indeed the chance to fly to family who have settled elsewhere.

This will be a two-hour livestreamed event via Roscommon Bound on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin, and will feature a host of Roscommon people both at home and abroad.

There will be a great deal of content across many spheres, from sports to arts to tourism and local business.

Summer wouldn’t normally be summer without the primrose and blue dreaming of glory (and indeed achieving it!) so there will be a catch up with some sporting legends and a look back on great moments from Danny Murray, captain of the 1980 All-Ireland team, to the stars of the present such as dual player Niall Kilroy and Conor Cox, to an upcoming star, Aaron Oyiki.

Other sportstars to feature on the day include Danni Neilan (unbeaten MMA fighter), Jenny Higgins from the LGFA, and Aoife O’Rourke and Donal Ward from the world of boxing.

The business world is also well represented from Willie Murphy and Saj Hussain in Ballaghaderreen, John Mee from Sidero in Monksland and Studio Meala in Boyle discussing the benefits to having a business and working in Roscommon.

The event will be peppered with highlights from the Roscommon world of the arts from poet Jane Clarke to a specially commissioned piece by Brian Leyden and many musical items including from the Solstice Choir, Fintan Donnelly, John Dunning and more. A dramatic piece by local actor Paraic Newman will tug at the heart strings for those who have experienced the ‘ache for home’.

The event is the work of the Regeneration Unit, Community and Enterprise, with input from various community groups and the Global Rossie family around the world. There has been a huge interest in the project both from within the county to Rossies around the

globe and according to Nollaig Whyte, who is spearheading the initiative: “We have had a great ‘complaint’ in that we have been inundated with content.

We have worked with local company Mimar Media to produce an amazing piece for Roscommon people everywhere. Hopefully they will be proud to promote their county to wannabe Rossies”.

Portiuncula tender decision in coming days – Naughten

The long drawn out process to commence the enabling works for the new 50-bed ward block at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, are coming to an end with the selection of a contractor in the coming days, local TD Denis Naughten has confirmed.

“The enabling works are required in advance of construction of the new 50-bed ward block, a commitment which I secured from Government in Project Ireland 2040 and was delivered upon by Minister Harris in October,” Deputy Naughten said this week in a press statement.

“I have now been informed that the HSE has received and listed the contractors in a protracted tender process that was initially delayed at the end of last year and had subsequently to be postponed to take account of safety measures needed on site as a result of Covid-19.

“The HSE is now going through some legal requirements and they expect a contractor will be appointed shortly after that, with works on site before the end of the summer”.

7 YEARS AGO Back in the Big House < SHANE REYNOLDS

Three Roscommon women were transported back in time recently and given a sense of what life was like for the typical Irish servant in the typical ‘Big House’ in Ireland as part of an exciting new television series by Big Mountain Productions.

The trio were part of a cast of 13 people who had to not only step back in time, but also – in their case – step into the shoes of their ancestors who had actually worked at Strokestown Park House during different periods around the middle of the 20th century. During the filming, the cast members actually worked and lived as servants in the past had done.

For several decades now, life has largely stood still at Strokestown Park House, the home of the Pakenham Mahon family for generations. Every fixture and fitting has remained as it was. But this big house recently came alive through the ancestors of men and women who lived and worked there – to bring to light a hidden history that until now has seldom been looked at.

Marie Gillooly, Rosemary Lyttle and Patricia Rogers had to spend three full days fulfilling the duties which their ancestors would have had to do – all under the watchful eye of the TV3 crew.

Strokestown House will feature throughout the four-part series.

5 YEARS AGO Funding approval for new Primary Care Centre in Boyle

The building of a new primary care centre in Boyle is due to start at the beginning of next year, it has been revealed.

The European Investment Bank have approved €70m in loan funding for 14 new primary care centres, including the new facility in north Roscommon.

When complete, the 17,000 square foot twostorey primary care centre, being developed on the grounds of the Plunkett Nursing Home, will include GP suites, consulting rooms, physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

It is expected that the construction of the project will provide a welcome jobs boost for the area.

By now, most older dogs will have seen the legendary ‘Kleenex toilet paper’ television ad, where a puppy neatly unrolls the toilet paper and takes it on a (neat) tour from room to room and eventually outside, all done in a very endearing (‘ah, look what the dog’s just done!’) type of way.

I can understand that our little dog, received from Santa last Christmas, is unlikely to have ever seen the ad, unless it featured on a recent ‘Reeling in the Years’.

Which might explain why, when our canine hero did her own version of ‘Reeling out the Toilet Paper,’ it bore no resemblance to the neat approach taken by the dog in the television ad.

Our dog just got a toilet roll, moved it from A to B and then tore it to shreds.

when people call, she goes a bit crazy for a few minutes. We assure them that she doesn’t bite, and most of them trust us.

Which of course reminds me of the scene in one of the Pink Panther movies, when Inspector Clouseau, played by Peter Sellers, is in a hotel reception speaking to the proprietor. Beside the surly proprietor is a small dog.

“Does your dog bite?” asks the very self-important Clouseau.

“No”.

At which point Clouseau smiles and stoops down to pat the little dog.

The dog attacks him viciously.

A startled Clouseau looks at the hotel owner.

“I thought you said your dog doesn’t bite?” he says, with a glare.

“THAT is not my dog”.

Roscommon to feature on Australian TV referendum special < EOGHAN YOUNG-MURPHY

will feature on a programme about Ireland’s recent marriage equality referendum on the Australian TV channel ABC later this month.

Same-sex marriages are not permitted in Australia, unlike in Ireland, which passed the referendum by a majority of over 60 per cent in May. Historically, Ireland became the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage by popular vote, which resulted in the referendum attacting publicity from various countries through the world.

Roscommon-South Leitrim was, however, the only constituency in the country to reject the referendum, which led to ABC’s decision to feature this county in a special programme on the subject.

They interviewed prominent ‘yes’ campaigner Anne Rigney at her home in Knockcroghery on June 30. They also filmed her at some well-known sites in the area, such as Quaker Island in Portrun and Murray’s Pub, Knockroghery.

Anne, whose son Darragh is gay, said: “They saw my poem, ‘Imagine It’s Your Child’, online and contacted me to feature me in the programme”.

2 YEARS AGO €10m water scheme boost for 5,000 residents!

Irish Water, working in partnership with Mayo, Roscommon and Galway County Councils, last Friday celebrated the official opening of the €10 million investment which has seen the extension of the Lough Mask Water Supply Scheme in Co. Mayo to Ballinlough, Cloonfad, Granlahan and Williamstown. This project, which was completed in May, enabled the planned lifting of the Boil Water Notice in Ballinlough in December 2017 and, says Irish Water, underpins the importance of a one-utility approach.

The official opening took place in Williamstown and was attended by a number of politicians, Irish Water representatives and members of the local community.

This project included the construction of over 22 kilometres of new water mains, a new water pumping station at the Ballyhaunis reservoir, and the construction of a new reservoir and control building at the site of the existing Granlahan water tower near Ballinlough.

Meu Diário Negro Eu não tinha certeza se gostaria de falar sobre esse assunto. Após a morte de George Floyd, o foco do mundo está novamente na América. O racismo e a vida negra estão de volta às notícias. Este é um tópico difícil de discutir. Dói crescer no Brasil, em um país onde 80% da população é de descendência africana. Creio que o racismo no Brasil está camuflado, enquanto na América está aberto ... todo mundo sabe onde está. Claro que não estou dizendo que é o caminho certo, é assim que é.

Minha mãe era professora e meu pai era policial.

Eu cresci com minha mãe constantemente dizendo para meu irmão e eu que, porque você é negra, sempre será vigiada onde quer que vá.

Não é fácil ter esse estresse em cima de tudo na vida. Tive algumas ocasiões em que sofri racismo durante a minha vida, mas quando você é jovem, às vezes, não leva isso muito a sério. O primeiro incidente que lembro foi quando fui visitar minha avó durante o verão, na década de 1980. Eu estava com meus primos, indo ao carnaval na época, e

estávamos andando em uma rua onde havia muita gente indo a um clube. Eu disse a eles ‘podemos ir para lá’, e meu primo disse ‘’ não, não podemos ‘’. Eu não acreditei, que não poderiamos entrar no clube por causa da nossa cor de pele, da mesma maneira que você não podia entrar em um clube porque seu jeans estavam rasgados!

Por muitas centenas de anos, os negros sofreram desigualdade racial e social, voltando aos tempos coloniais.

Tínhamos Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Bob Marley em sua música e a luta e a dor são mais profundas do que podemos imaginar. Países como EUA, Brasil, Inglaterra e França, todos têm seus próprios problemas em relação ao racismo. Nesses países, a batalha para encontrar uma solução está longe de terminar.

Desde que vim para a Irlanda há mais de 19 anos, parece que o caráter do racismo mudou. Já não são apenas os negros que sentem os efeitos. Eu acho que na Irlanda há um aspecto diferente e é hora de as pessoas aprenderem a aceitar todas as variedades da humanidade. O racismo aqui é mais evidente em relação a comunidade cigana e imigrantes. Enquanto os assuntos são diferentes, as consequências são as mesmas. É sabio que os imigrantes estão principalmente nos empregos com salários mais baixos. Eu vim para a Irlanda sem inglês e para mim foi muito importante aprender o idioma. Provavelmente porque minha mãe sempre me dizia ‘você precisa fazer o seu melhor, sempre será vigiado’. Ser negra e imigrante significava que sempre senti a necessidade de me envolver com a comunidade local, melhorar meu inglês e conhecer meus vizinhos. Penso que a Irlanda, em comparação com outros países, tem a chance de evitar cometer os erros que levaram ao tipo de manchetes que vimos nas últimas semanas.

Pessoas de todas as raças precisam conhecer um ao outro, conhecer a cultura um do outro, entender o passado um do outro e entender que todas as vidas são importantes! Ninguém nasce para ser racista, é algo que é aprendido. Tolerância e educação contribuirão bastante para acabar com isso!

My Black Diary I wasn’t sure if I would like to talk about this matter. After the death of George Floyd, the world’s focus is on America again. Racism and black lives are back in the news. This is a difficult topic to discuss. It hurt to grow up in Brazil, in a country where 80% of the population are of African descent. Racism in Brazil is, I believe, camouflaged, whereas in America it is out there – everyone knows where it’s at. Of course I’m not saying that is the right way, that’s just how it is.

My mum was a teacher and my dad was a policeman. I grew up with my mum constantly telling my brother and I that because you are black, you always will be watched wherever you go.

It is not easy to have this stress on top of everything else in life. I had a few occasions when I suffered from racism during my life, but when you are young, sometimes you don’t take it too seriously. The first incident I remember was when I went to visit my granny during the summer, back in the 1980’s. I was with my cousins, going to a carnival at the time, and we were walking in a street where there were lots people going to a club.

I said to them, “We can go there’’, and my cousin said ‘’No we can’t’’. I couldn’t believe it, we were not able to get into the club because of our skin colour, in much the same way as you once couldn’t get into a club because your jeans were ripped!

For many hundreds of years, black people have

suffered racial and social inequality – going right back to colonial times.

We had Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Bob Marley in his music. The fight and the pain is deeper than we can imagine. Countries such as the USA, Brazil, England and France all have their own problems in relation to racism. In these countries, the battle to find a solution is far from at an end.

Since I came to Ireland over 19 years ago, it seems the character of racism has changed. It is no longer only black people who feel the effects. I think in Ireland, it’s time for people to learn to accept all varieties of humankind. Racism here is more evident towards Travellers and immigrants. While the subjects are different, the consequences are the same. It is well known that immigrants are mostly in lower-paid jobs.

I came to Ireland with no English and for me it was very important to learn the language. This was probably because my Mum always told me, ‘’You need to try to do your best, you will always be watched’’. Being a black woman and an immigrant meant I always felt the need to get involved with the local community, to improve my English and to get to know my neighbours. I think Ireland, compared to other countries, has a chance to avoid making the mistakes which have led to the kind of headlines that we have seen in recent weeks.

People of all races need to get to know each other, to know each other’s culture, to understand each other’s background and to understand that all lives matter! Nobody is born to be a racist, it is something that is learned. Tolerance and education will go a long way towards stamping it out!

‘We had one barber. Ted Dufferly. He had no barber’s shop…he dressed in very fancy clothes and was a very outstanding character’ Before his death in 1953, George N. Geraghty wrote extensively about his memories of life in Roscommon Town (and environs) in the early years of the 20th century…the Roscommon People is pleased to serialise these fascinating memories Before the advent of motor-cars there were a good many horse carriages in and around Roscommon, and the Gavin and McGibney families built splendid coaches and cars, all hand-made and perfectly finished.

Opposite Gavins was the handball alley. It has long ago disappeared and on the site is a shop owned by P. Keagher.

The ball alley was a lively place on Sundays. Teams from Castlerea, Boyle, etc. were frequent visitors. E. Melia, Jimmie Higgins and Ned Geraghty were outstanding players for Roscommon in those far-off days. The game was then played with the hard ball.

The ball was homemade; the inner core was a small round cork, and this was covered with woollen thread; the outside cover was made of sheepskin. When finished it was a little larger than a golf ball. Ned Geraghty made most of the balls.

On the other side of the road, now Abbey House, lived the Burke family. Joseph Burke, head of family, was a solicitor, or, as he was called, ‘Torney Burke’. He became very successful at the law courts and brought up his family in grand style and with a very imperial outlook. He kept splendid horses and carriages and had a yacht on the Shannon at Galey Bay. Everything around Abbey House was freshly painted, and a big Union Jack was flown from the flagstaff on the lawn. There was a tennis court in front of the house, and all the legal fraternity was there entertained.

George James was then Sheriff. His residence was called ‘The Villa’. It is still there near the railway bridge. He was a very big man and fulfilled his duty as Sheriff without fear or favour. After he went to his reward, a Mr. Sheils from Kilbegnet was appointed Sheriff and after some years he resigned the office and Charles Dignan became Sheriff. Johnnie James was Court Registrar (brother to George James); he resided in well-furnished apartments in the Court House.

Patrick Cooney, still going strong, was Sheriff’s Clerk all that time. Anything that Pat Cooney did not know about Sheriff’s Law or the conduct of elections was not worth knowing. The same applied to the late John McKeon in the Registrar’s office; he knew the law records inside out.

Harness Making Harness making in Roscommon was carried on by John Mullen and Pat Donovan in Church St. Pat Monahan in the old Jail in Market Square and Pat Lavin in Castle St. (too). Jack Naughton started later in Church St. Like all other trades there were always journeymen harness makers coming and going. Collar making was a special branch of the trade.

Plumbing Thomas Watt was the only plumber at the time. He came to do the lead work on the Court House roof and remained on. The laying of the water supply to the town caused a lot of employment for plumbers.

Tom Watt carried out most of the work. His son William is keeping on the work.

Other trades There were also weavers and hatters in Roscommon. The last of the weavers was Jimmie Streetch; he lived in a small house on the site next door to Mr. T. Larkin’s residence in Castle St. We had one barber. Ted Dufferly. He had no barber’s shop. If you wanted a haircut you had to get Ted to come to your home to do the job. He dressed in very fancy clothes and was a very outstanding character.

The Bakery Business Frank Finlay, Michael Finlay, Bernard Henry, Charles Kelly, Mrs. McNamara and Mrs. Egan, were the principal Bakers. The ovens were turf burning. The walls and the arch or crown of the oven were built of brick and the floor or sole tiled. A large quantity of turf was put into the oven and the fire was started. The flue was placed in the front of the oven so the flames from the fire heated the sides, the arch, or crown before it reached the flue.

When the fire was spent the ashes were raked out and the sole of the oven cleaned. The sponge formed into loaves and was then placed in the oven and the opening at the front sealed up with a sheet iron door. The heat contained in the brickwork baked the bread and grand bread it was. It was called loaf bread to distinguish it from soda cake, which was generally used by the country farmers. Only on market days or fair days would the farmers buy a loaf of white bread. The loaf was then looked on as a treat to bring home to the children.

Charlie Kelly in addition to the loaf bread baked a composition called chester cake, it contained currants, brown sugar, etc. Charlie Kelly’s bakery was on the site of the house occupied by the late Denis O’Brien at the corner of Lanesboro St. Frank Finlay carried on his bakery where T. McGuinness, chemist, is living now. Michael Finlay was where Messrs. Molloys are now in Main St. Mr. Finlay moved over to the opposite side of Main Street and Edward Melia went into possession. The Molloys Bros. purchased the business from the Melias.

More businesses J.C. Doorley’s Corner Shop is still going strong under the supervision of the eldest son, John Joe Doorley. Opposite J.C. was John Jones Hardware & General Timber & Seed Merchant, leather, iron, coal, etc. Miss Cunniffe had a bookshop and also sold toys and newspapers where Mr. Dowdall has his boot store now. Joseph O’Neill had a fine Grocery with Bar and Bakery in Castle Street.

Mr. T. Hannick is carrying on there now. Then we had the Connors in Castle St., Luke Connor and his son Pat (also Grocery and Bars).

‘Civil War era ending’ – Feighan Fine Gael TD Frank Feighan has said that the “historic” Programme for Government that has been agreed between Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Green Party will deliver for the people of this region.

Deputy Feighan, whose constituency spans Sligo, Leitrim, South Donegal and North Roscommon, said he is heartened to see plans for progress in areas such as balanced regional development, the continuation of the Project Ireland 2040 Plan, and a greener economy, and in farming too.

He is also welcoming what he sees as moves towards improving the prospect of a shared island, universal healthcare, increased social housing and affordable housing, the quicker roll-out of the National Broadband Plan, moves to increase working from home opportunities, dedicated commitments to improve women’s health, more power for local Government and more affordable childcare and better pay for childcare workers.

“I am also eager to learn more about the proposed €6 billion Covid-19 stimulus programme which is to commence in July 2020 and what this will entail for businesses in this region”.

Deputy Feighan said that the unprecedented Covid-19 challenge had required parties to put aside historic political differences and to stand up and be counted for the good of the country.

“It is clear that the Civil War era of Irish politics that has dominated our political system for the last 100 years is concluding, just as we are about to commence into the second centenary of our State’s history. This is to be welcomed”.

Murphy welcomes historic pact

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has welcomed the fact that a new Programme for Government has been agreed, while noting that the deal still has to be signed off on by party delegates.

“This is a significant moment. For the first time in almost ten years Fianna Fáil will have six senior Minister positions and a number of junior ministries and I have no doubt that Fianna Fáil policy in relation to rural Ireland and housing in particular will shine through”.

Senator Murphy said that it was now vital that the SME sector and the farming community receive support as they bid to recover from the fall-out from the coronavirus pandemic. He noted plans for a July stimulus package and further plans to relation to education, housing and reform of defamation laws and also of the insurance sector.

County Council Artist Commission Roscommon County Council Arts Office invites professional artists, born in or currently living in County Roscommon, to submit applications for consideration for the Culture Night – Decade of Centenaries 1920-2020 Commission. This marks the second in a series of visual art commissions for County Roscommon celebrating our extraordinary citizens through exceptional, challenging and unexpected visual art projects.

The 2020 artist commission to the value of €5,000 is supported by the Arts Office/Arts Council of Ireland Culture Night Programme, together with the Community Strand of the 2020 Decade of Centenaries Programme. The commission seeks visual/film/multidisciplinary artists to respond to Roscommon’s Struggle for Independence around the period of 1920, with 2020 vision. The work will be produced as an outdoor projection on a number of buildings in County Roscommon on Culture Night, 18th of September 2020 and for two further nights – 19th and 20th of September.

Council’s 2020 Writer Mentorship Programme

Roscommon County Council Arts Office has released details of its 2020 Writer Mentoring Programme. The Writer Mentorship Programme is designed to support the development of emerging and established Roscommon writers who have identified particular gaps in their knowledge and expertise.

The programme achieves this by providing funding to a leading professional to help the applicant make the next steps in their development. The programme is open to writers whose practice is based in Co. Roscommon.

The mentor will provide an objective critique and feedback on the writer’s work and/or assist her or him in the development of a specific writing project. The focus of the mentor can be on short-term objectives, such as completing a manuscript, or it can be on longer-term goals that the mentee may wish to explore.

SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION Sunday, March 21, 2020 Our commitment to Christ will be put to the test.

We will hear whispered warnings and denunciations, as Jeremiah does in today’s First Reading. Even so-called friends will try to trap us and trip us up.

For His sake we will bear insults and be made outcasts – even in our own homes, we hear in today’s Psalm.

As Jeremiah tells us, we must expect that God will challenge our faith in Him, and probe our minds and hearts, to test the depths of our love.

“Do not be afraid,” Jesus assures us three times in today’s Gospel.

Though He may permit us to suffer for our faith, our Father will never forget or abandon us. As Jesus assures us today, everything unfolds in His Providence, under His watchful gaze – even the falling of the tiniest sparrow to the ground. Each one of us is precious to Him. Steadfast in this faith, we must resist the tactics of Satan. He is the enemy who seeks the ruin of our soul in Gehenna, or hell.

We are to seek God, as the Psalmist says. Zeal for the Lord’s house, for the heavenly kingdom of the Father, should consume us, as it consumed Jesus (see John 2:17). As Jesus bore the insults of those who blasphemed God, so should we (see Romans 15:3).

By the gracious gift of himself, Jesus bore the transgressions of the world, Paul tells us in today’s Epistle. In rising from the dead, He has shown us that God rescues the life of the poor, that He does not spurn His own when they are in distress. In His great mercy, He will turn toward us, as well. He will deliver us from the power of the wicked.

That is why we proclaim His name from the housetops, as Jesus tells us. That is why we sing praise and offer thanksgiving in every Eucharist. We are confident in Jesus’ promise – that we who declare our faith in Him before others will be remembered before our heavenly Father.

Jacinda shows up Boris and Donald … and shows us light at end of tunnel Our columnist was delighted to see the return of rugby (albeit from far-off New Zealand), is hailing a civic-minded soccer star…and expresses admiration for Diego, the amorous tortoise…

I have never set foot on New Zealand soil, and it’s highly unlikely now that I will ever do so. All my life I have felt that there is something different about New Zealanders.

Maybe it’s the constant and continual brilliance of the All Blacks at rugby, maybe it’s the way they perform the Haka…the absolute and total commitment they show to what is really only a ceremonial dance. But more than anything I think what impresses me is their pride in their country, and

their undying love of their home land.

If I had met you a while ago, and you asked me what I thought of Jacinda Ardern, I would have looked at you with a blank expression on my face (nothing new there) and responded ‘Jacinta who?’

Today, the 39-year-old New Zealand Prime Minister is known all over the world, widely praised for the excellent leadership she has shown in handling the fall-out from a mosque shooting incident, and even more so for her decisive and firm handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Immediately after the mosque attack in Christchurch in March 2019, she introduced two rounds of stringent gun laws to ensure that such an incident would be much more unlikely to happen again. But it was the way she immediately locked her country down at

the first sign of the pandemic that set her apart from nearly every other so-called leader, especially those two clowns, Donald and Boris.

Now I am fully aware that figures and statistics can be misleading, but even to a former pass maths student, in countries of almost identical populations, the figures speak for themselves.

Ireland has, at time of writing, had 25,303 cases of the disease and 1,706 deaths, while New Zealand has had 1,154 cases and 22 deaths.

Critics point out that they are a remote enough island people, but so are we.

Whatever the reason for it, they are effectively now Covid-free.

The upshot of it all is that on Saturday morning, rugby, in all its normality (with full contact and full houses) returned to New Zealand.

And so at 8 am I was parked in front of the TV to see much more than a

rugby match, but something that would show the whole world that there is light at the end of a very long tunnel. The opening game was a really top class affair, and had a big Irish interest. That’s because Warren Gatland, a man who many believe was very harshly treated by the hierarchy in Irish rugby when he was sacked in 2005, was back home as coach of the Waikato Chiefs, his first game being against the Highlanders.

There was an amazing twist to the tale at the finish as the Chiefs took the lead with a drop goal with just under two minutes to go, only for the Highlanders to do the exact same thing on the stroke of full-time – to win by a solitary point.

The amazing thing is that it was Gatland’s son, Bryn, who kicked the goal to win the game, so I imagine the atmosphere between them

Civic-minded Marcus on the mark For a number of years I have written about the ridiculous money that Premier League soccer players earn in England, and how a lot of them have little or no respect for the supporters who contribute to their enormous wages by turning up game after game to cheer on their team and support the prima donnas.

Lots of these players spend their time on the pitch diving – trying to win free-kicks or penalties, or worse still get an opponent sent off (trying to con the referee by so doing) – and generally showing little regard for old-fashioned values like fair play and sportsmanship. Then Marcus Rashford comes along and restores a lot of my faith in footballers and humanity.

At the tender age of 22, and already a Man. Utd. legend, an English

international, and a very wealthy young man, Rashford could very easily live the pampered life of a professional footballer, lap up all the glory, and forget all about his own family’s struggles against poverty and deprivation.

However, to his credit, during the pandemic he teamed up with a food charity (FareShare) which provided meals for children, who, if they were still at school, would have been receiving free meals. Because of the closure of the schools many of those children – who live in poverty – would not have been fed at all.

Over three million children availed of the meals provided by Rashford and the charity.

Now the young footballer has gone a step further and sent an open letter to all British MPs, pleading with

them to continue with the free meals for all needy schoolkids over the summer, and being quite open about the fact that he and his family often relied on such help in his younger days to keep them from going hungry.

At a time when boxing is once again embroiled in controversy with the emergence of Daniel Kinahan in his role as a major power broker in the murky waters of that sport, it’s marvellous, heartening and inspiring to see that there are still real heroes, even in professional football.

Well done, Marcus. I look forward to seeing you in action on the field some time in the near future, and maybe you might even get to meet me. If you do, you can have a picture taken with me!

The following evening, 43,000 supporters packed in to Eden Park to watch the Blues beat the Hurricanes.

That was the biggest crowd at a game there in 15 years, which shows how much people want to get back to normal.

So maybe we too can look forward to the reopening of sport, hotels, pubs, res-

taurants and other things that we all took for granted in the near future. Who knows, maybe we will have a 2020 Connacht final.

Anyway, I have never been to either America or New Zealand, but based on the behaviour of their respective leaders, I know which one I would like to go to if my lotto numbers ever come up. And it’s not America.

Latest in my top sporting moments On now to my top ten sporting moments and memories, and, once again it’s back to 1985, and back to Mikeen’s, where in the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday, 29th of April, we nearly took the roof off the pub as we watched Dennis Taylor win his one and only world snooker championship by beating the red-hot favourite Steve Davis.

Imagine the scene (not in Mikeen’s, but in the Crucible).

Davis had stormed into an 8 frames to nil lead, only for the unfancied Taylor to pull it back, and it was 17 apiece as they came to the last and final frame.

More than 19 million people were tuned in to the final in the UK, along with a nice few in Mikeen’s, and even though closing time was 11 o’clock there was no way we could be thrown out as the excitement reached a crescendo.

The final frame lasted 68 minutes and went to the black ball, which Taylor sank to clinch an amazing and extraordinary victory.

Mostly because of that, and partly because of the late hour, Dennis Taylor is very well worth his place in my top ten sporting memories. (It proved to be only a blip in Davis’ career as he was to win three in a row between 1987 and 1989, ended up with a total of six world championships and is rightly regarded as one of the best snooker players of all time). For Taylor, while he was never to win another one, it guaranteed him a deserved place in sporting history.

And finally… amorous Diego Finally for this week, spare a thought for Diego, a giant Galapagos tortoise, who has been put out to pasture after almost single-handedly saving his once-threatened species.

Aged 100, he has reportedly fathered 800 ‘babies’ during his long and busy life. In all fairness, if any one deserves a rest he surely does.

At one stage there were only two males and twelve females of his species left, and they were too spread out to reproduce, so Diego was sent for – and he certainly didn’t disappoint. I wish him a long and happy retirement, for if ever someone (or some animal) performed way above and beyond the call of duty he did. So well done Diego!

FarmingPeople Roscommon Mart reports Sale on Friday, 12th of June: There was a good entry of stock at our weekly Friday sale which included both bidding at the ringside and online. Again this week a good number of buyers purchased online while 40% of sellers did not return to the mart for the sale of the their cattle and instead opted to accept their prices after viewing their stock at home on the LSL App. Prices for dry cows ranged from €1.68 per kilo up to €2.04 per kilo. Heifers fetched from an average of €2.08 per kilo up to €2.65 per kilo while bullocks made from an average of €2.05 per kilo up to €2.34 per kilo. Prices in general for quality stock are holding up well, while plainer lots are more difficult to sell.

Our next sale for dry cows, heifers and bullocks will take place on Friday, 19th of June. Intake from 7.30 am-9.30 am. Viewing by appointment from 10.15 pm-11.45 pm.

Sale at 12 noon. Limited access to the ring for buyers only.

Weanlings - The numbers on offer were slightly smaller this week. There was a brisk trade and a good demand for weanling heifers with lots fetching from an average of €2.40 per kilo up to a maximum of €2.96 per kilo resulting in a high percentage of lots getting sold. Prices for weanling bulls were a little easier to the previous week with prices ranging from an average of €2.25 per kilo up to €2.73 per kilo.

Once again, this week over one-third of purchases were made online while sellers also availed of the online platform to view their cattle and accept their prices without having to return to the mart.

Please note the next weanling sale will be held on Tuesday, 23rd of June at 4 pm. Yard opens at 12 noon. Bookings accepted up to 5 pm on Thursday, 18th of June. All cattle must be penned by 1 pm. Stock arriving late will not be accepted. Viewing time for buyers from 2.15 pm-3.45 pm.

In Ring 3, there was a good trade for calves and runners, while the cows with calves at foot were in strong demand with prices topping out at €2010. The dry cows with good numbers on offer were in good demand also with the top cows exceeding €2 a kilo. In the heifer and weanling heifer rings demand was firm, with renewed Northern Ireland interest but quality was still a major factor in prices. The store heifers peaked at €2.62 a kilo while the weanling heifers peaked at €3.31 a kilo.

Europe Day celebrations on Zoom with Maria Walsh MEP MEP Maria Walsh joined two Zoom meetings with 5th and 6th class pupils and teachers from St. Mary’s Primary School, Strokestown on Friday, 29th of May. Senior pupils have been working on the Blue Star programme, which aims to foster a better understanding of the European Union and European cultures through creative activities and classroom projects that complement the Primary School Curriculum.

This is the fourth year that St. Mary’s Primary school has participated in this programme. Pupils and teachers usually organise a European show and Food Fair in May/June every year to celebrate Europe Day. Unfortunately this couldn’t happen this year due to Covid-19.

Mrs. Feely (Principal) and Caitriona Brehony (Blue Star Coordinator) and French teacher decided to invite Maria Walsh MEP to join their Europe Day celebrations on Zoom. Pupils presented a summary of their projects on the EU countries. Every pupil got the opportunity to ask Maria questions and they concluded the meeting by playing the European anthem – ‘Ode to Joy’ on recorders.

Maria Walsh was very impressed with the pupils’ level of knowledge and understanding of the EU and she really enjoyed their presentations on the European countries.

The family of the late Canon Peadar, wish to express their appreciation to all who expressed their sympathies and gestures of kindness to them following Canon Peadar’s recent death.

Thank you to all who sent Mass cards, expressed condolences on RIP.ie and other various social media forums, and to those who phoned or sent text messages, and who were understanding of the requirements and restrictions due to Covid-19.

No words can express our gratefulness to all the wonderful staff of the Sacred Heart Hospital Roscommon. Canon Peadar was a daily visitor to the Hospital following his retirement in 2011 where he joined Fr Sean Beirne for Mass and quickly became part of its community. We will be forever grateful to the staff and residents for their friendship to him on his daily visits but most especially for the care he received in his final weeks when he was transferred there from Roscommon University Hospital.

Thank you to his wonderful neighbours in Sleeveenagee, Ken and Sinead and Paulie and Una and his many friends, former parishioners and students who were all regular visitors to his house, and maintained their friendships with him over the decades.

Thank you to Bishop Doran and Peadar’s brother priests in the Diocese of Elphin for their friendship to him, and particularly his daily lunch colleagues.

Thank you to the people of the various schools and parishes where Canon Peadar served. To the people of Knockcroghery parish, his final parish and the St Dominic’s Club who formed a guard of honor to show their respect for him on the day of his funeral and produced a lovely tribute to him on the clubs Facebook page. To the people of Boyle who gathered outside St Joseph’s Church as mark of respect.

Thank you to all who came out and lined the route by standing as a mark of respect at various crossroads and in front of their homes along the way to Canon Peadar’s final resting place in Kilmactranny as the cortege made its way there.

To the people of his native Ballyfarnon and St Ronan’s club who welcomed him home to the village, it was especially poignant and memorable for us his family.

A special thank you to Fr Donal Morris PP, Creggs, for celebrating and arranging Canon Peadars funeral Mass. Thanks to Fr Ray Milton PP, Knockcroghery, who facilitated Peadar’s funeral Mass in Knockcroghery and concelebrated it along with Fr Sean Beirne.

Thank you to Bishop Doran who performed the burial rites in Kilmactranny.

Thank you to Tommy Shivnan, funeral director, and friend of Peadar’s who tended to the Funeral arrangements with his usual personal and professional manner. Thanks also to the gravediggers who prepared Canon Peadar’s final resting place.

Please accept this acknowledgement as a token of our appreciation and gratitude. Mass will be offered for your intentions and we hope at the appropriate time to have a Mass in remembrance of Canon Peadar.

8 YEARS AGO Strokestown ladies claim first Senior League

Strokestown 1-13 Kilglass 1-8: Strokestown ladies claimed their first Senior League title when they won the Division 1 League Final played in Tarmonbarry on Sunday 20th of May at the expense of near-neighbours Kilglass in a tough but sporting game.

With Strokestown dominating midfield, they entered the second half with a five-point advantage on a scoreline of 0-8 to 0-3.

Kilglass started the second half much the livelier and brought the scoreline back to level with ten minutes to go. The decisive score came when a long ball found Laura Brudell in space and she made no mistake in finishing to the back of the net. Strokestown pushed on then with great scores coming from McHugh and McDermott to seal the game! This was a good all-round team performance from Strokestown with Aisling MacAuliffe particularly impressive at centre half-forward.

From Seamus Duke’s column: The Olympics Games – a fantastic sporting drama

The Olympic Games have been fantastic. I have

warmed to them even more since they started and, even at this stage, there have been so many brilliant stories. The TV coverage provided by the BBC is second to none. At one stage last Saturday there were 20 different sports available on the ‘red button’. I know that their coverage is very biased when it comes to ‘Team GB’, but if you can park that, they have done a fantastic job!

The story of the Irish woman, Catriona Jennings, who finished last, an hour behind everyone else, in the marathon was heart-warming. She was injured and probably should have given up, but she kept going and was cheered to the echo by the huge crowds in London. Not only did the Irish people cheer her on but the Londoners were part of that in a huge way too.

Usain Bolt thrilled the crowds on Sunday in winning the 100 metres but we have our own Usain Bolt as Katie Taylor looks set for gold in the women’s boxing. Incredible to report that the Irish fans outnumbered and certainly outshouted their British counterparts as Katie fought the home favourite Natasha Jonas on Monday.

There have been brilliant stories of ecstasy and despair in almost every sport but the Brits can take a bow for the way that the whole event has been organised. The Olympic Park is a fantastic gathering place for fans and last Saturday there were 340,000 people there.

5 YEARS AGO Lyons’ caps remarkable turnaround for Roscommon

Roscommon 4-8 Meath 3-9 Roscommon came from 10 points down to record a sensational two-point victory at Athleague.

Meath grabbed the first goal through Ross Ryan but Roscommon players claimed he threw the

ball into the net – but the goal stood. Roscommon then responded with a fine goal from John Murray.

Then Meath struck for two goals before halftime and both came from the stick of Mark Slevin and it helped Meath into a 3-5 to 1-3 lead at the break. Three quick points from Meath saw Roscommon trail by 10 points, 3-8 to 1-4 after 37 minutes.

But three Roscommon goals in six minutes turned the game on its head. Daniel Glynn scored a goal from a free and then fine efforts from Brian Lawlor and Gearoid Keenan saw the Rossies back in the game. Then in a frantic final few minutes two great points from sub Aengus Lyons sealed victory. Meath did have a late goal chance but Gearoid Keenan made an excellent block on the line to send Roscommon into the semi-finals where they will face Wicklow.

Ladies land semi-final spot

Roscommon 2-11 Westmeath 2-9 A strong first-half display from the home side was enough to see off the determined challenge of Westmeath at Rockfield last Sunday. The result means that Roscommon are now in the semi-finals and they will face Dublin in a few weeks time.

The strong wind ruined the game as a spectacle, and with the elements at their backs Roscommon took full advantage in the opening half and by halftime they led by 2-9 to 0-4. Roscommon went 0-6 to 0-1 ahead after 12 minutes and were looking good.

Then in the 15th minute Niamh Coyle blasted home a fine Roscommon goal and just before the half-time whistle Annette McGeeney struck home Roscommon’s second goal and at half-time the home side

led by 11 points. But Westmeath laid siege to the Roscommon goal and especially in the last 20 minutes. Denise McGrath scored an early goal and Westmeath were back in the hunt. Roscommon defended well and the home side scored two frees from Niamh Farrell in the 53rd and 56th minutes and they were to prove crucial scores.

Christy Ring Cup Promotion/Relegation Play-off/ Connacht Intermediate Final: Roscommon 2-14 Mayo 0-13 The rise of Roscommon’s hurling fortunes continued in Pearse Stadium last Sunday as Justin Campbell’s men produced a superb second-half display to overwhelm Mayo, and now Roscommon will compete in the Christy Ring Cup in 2016.

It’s a great reward after a season which began with frustration in the league but which has ended in glory with a Nicky Rackard Cup title and now promotion to a higher level in championship hurling for the first time in over a decade.

Roscommon GAA unveil schedule for championships < SEAMUS DUKE

The Roscommon GAA Club Championships in football and hurling will begin on the Bank Holiday weekend (July 31st-August 3rd). The format will be similar to last year, with just one small change (see below). This decision was made by the County Board’s Fixtures Committee last week. The proposals will need to be ratified by the clubs at a County Board meeting next Monday night, but that looks set to be a formality.

There will be championship action on all four days of the Bank Holiday weekend. The draw for all championships will be made on Monday, June 29th, and will be streamed live on the Roscommon GAA Facebook page.

The football format will be three groups of four teams, with the top two in each group qualifying for the quarter-finals and the best two thirdplaced teams also qualifying for the last eight.

That will be decided on scoring difference. This is the only change – last year there were playoffs to decide the remaining two quarter-final places.

In the event of a draw, quarter-finals and semi-finals will go to extra-time if necessary.

If the game remains level after extra-time, the outcome will be decided by a penalty shootout. Extra-time will be applicable in the county finals, but if the teams are level after that, there will be a replay.

Brian Carroll, Chairperson of the Fixtures Committee, said: “Regrettably there won’t be any leagues this year because there is only a short timeframe in which to run our competitions, and we want to give the Junior ‘B’ teams a chance to play a championship. We hope to

run the U-20 championship as well later on in the year.

“The new arrangements will be tough, with every club having to appoint a Covid supervisor to oversee the regulations. There will be a Covid officer with every club team which will be a huge challenge especially when we come to underage teams – but we are hopeful that it will work out”.

On the issue of whether or not spectators would be permitted to attend, Mr. Carroll said that the County Board is awaiting direction.

“We also have to think of our referees and umpires, (other) match officials, and gate collectors. But we are very hopeful that we can get going as planned on July 31st. There are a lot of people in clubs – players and officials and fans too – who are very anxious to get back into action. We have to make sure that we follow all the guidelines and do everything right”.

Club players demand parity of esteem!

Kilmore duo to the fore in CPA The GAA must protect the time they have allocated to club games in 2020 by applying rules and sanctions, if they are not to cause damage to the future of the Association.

That is the firm message from the CPA (Club Players Association) as counties formulate their return to play competition structures for the 2020 season. The CPA believes that the GAA must clearly demonstrate parity of esteem across all its members at this most difficult crossroads.

With the allocation of an 11-week club window, the CPA is adamant that this time is given over to clubs to enable meaningful competitive games for players despite the truncated season.

CPA Chairman Micheál Briody said: “As an association we must respect the integrity of our club competitions and this means using the time available in the best possible way. Suggestions of running off championships in blitz format or shrunk to a very tight timeframe to enable county

preparations are sacrilege and will have longlasting implications”.

To provide clarity to the GAA membership the CPA are asking (1): What are the leadership going to do to ensure all counties optimally use the 11 weeks allocated to run their championships?

(2): What are the leadership going to do to ensure intercounty players are not asked or coerced into training with the intercounty team before they finish their club championships?

AGM The Club Players Association recently held its AGM by videoconference, reaffirming its continuing campaign to Fix the Fixtures.

The AGM took place remotely on account of Covid-19 restrictions. Chairman Micheál Briody was re-elected to serve for a further year, with Tommie Kenoy of Kilmore GAA Club in Roscommon replacing Michael Higgins as secretary and Joan Kehoe taking over from Anthony Moyles as Treasurer.

Colm Garvey, also from the Kilmore club in Roscommon, has joined the executive.

On Saturday there are 3 Group 1 and 2 Group races with 3 Irish trained runners in the Coronation Stakes. There are 2 from Ballydoyle So Wonderful and Love Locket, Peaceful gives it a miss, and Alpine Star from Jessica Harrington’s yard ridden by Dettori. Alpine Star looks the pick of the trio but she has Quadrilateral, 3rd in the 1000 Guineas to Love, to beat. Dad Aidan trained

the winner Peaceful and the 3rd So Wonderful.

Son Donnacha’s Fancy Blue split the pair with the winning distances 2l and a head. Seamie Heffernan rode the winner, Declan McDonagh the runner-up and Wayne Lordan the third.

Punters had to wait until the 5th, The Global Rossies Day on 21st June Handicap, for the 2nd fav when the Michael O’Callaghan trained Alexei Vronsky gave jockey Billy Lee a double. The Ivan Connaughton Auctioneers Handicap was divided with Div I going to Gavin Cromwell’s Tashman giving Gary Carroll a double and Div II went to the Ger O’Leary trained Will Be King ridden by the man in form Shane Foley.

Royal Ascot started behind closed doors on Tuesday with 2 Group 1 races. The first, The Queen Anne Stakes, was won by Ballydoyle’s Circus Maximus who, under Ryan Moore, battled back to get his head up on the line a head in front of Terebellum with Frankie Dettori aboard.

The Kings Stand Stakes was won by the odds on Battash ridden by Jim Crowley for Charles Hill. Aidan O’Brien also trained 2nd and 3rd in the Ribblesdale Stakes for fillies with Ennistymon and Passion beaten by Frankly Darling.

Arthur’s Kingdom, O’Brien’s outsider, finished in the King Edward Stakes to Pyledriver where the fav Mogul disappointed finishing unplaced.

Yesterday the Prince of Wales Stakes was the only Group 1 race on the card and it was won by the well backed, 12’s to 5’s, Lord North from Addeybb with Barney Roy filling the minor spot. Ballydoyle’s representative, Japan was an uneasy fav 5/6 to 6/4 and was slow out of stalls and finished only 4th.

General News Yesterday the Curragh announced that Juddmonte will sponsor the Irish Oaks on 18th July and for the next three years. Juddmonte have previously sponsored the Beresford Stakes and The Pretty Polly Stakes at headquarters and now sponsor one of the 5 classic races.

REFLECTIONS ON SPORTING INSPIRATIONS

Brendan Foster: ‘We’re looking at the two finest female distance runners in the world… the 10,000m champion, the potential 5,000m champion…and Sonia O’Sullivan is moving out nicely. Is this to be Ireland’s first ever female World Champion? The last lap will tell’.

David Coleman: ‘In a moment, they’ll hear the bell. Ribeiro leads, going for a double, she’s won the 10,000. O’Sullivan in second place, the perfect position for her…still O’Sullivan waits…250 to go…

O’Sullivan testing, lengthening her stride… and O’Sullivan gradually striding away… nothing dramatic…just increasing the pace…and Sonia O’Sullivan is going to take the world title back to Ireland and her home city of Cobh! O’Sullivan wins the world 5000m title, the first ever 5000m title…’

– The BBC’s David Coleman (with co-commentator Brendan Foster) commentating on the 1995 World Championships (and giving Cobh city status) There was a point in the 1990s when it seemed like we were all living in Sonia’s World. Or on Planet Sonia. A grand place to live, as long as our emotions could cope!

Yeah, Planet Sonia, Sonia’s World, call it what you like…she had some grip on this country and its people.

When I think of Sonia, two things come to mind before even considering the majesty of her actual performances, or her eventual haul of medals and titles.

Firstly, she achieved that pretty unique honour of being instantly recognisable by first name only (instinctively, so far in this article I’ve only referred to Sonia by her first name). Yes, she had the Elvis factor! We did it with Elvis. With Oprah. Gay. Gazza. DJ, as in “Ah, Kilkenny should win, DJ will be the difference…”. In politics, we even did it for a period with Charlie. In the mid-1990s, the headline writers reached only for Sonia, hardly ever needing to add on ‘O’Sullivan’.

The second thing that immediately strikes me about Sonia when reflecting on the scale of her achievements and her place in our hearts is the extraordinary extent to which the Cork woman perfectly symbolises what a communal experience is.

When Sonia was limbering up at the start of a big race, virtually the entire country was watching. We knew that to be true. We didn’t need (or have) Twitter to confirm it. We just knew! When Sonia was on TV, the nation paused, then succumbed to her. We entered Sonia’s World. We placed ourselves into her hands, into the dizzying slipstream of her steps, communally awaiting whatever drama the night would bring. Next day, we asked ‘Did you see Sonia?’ Or ‘What did you think of Sonia?’ Often, the morning radio shows, reading the national mood, dissected the latest twist in her rollercoaster career. Once we had aired and shared our joy or hurt over So-

Silver in Sydney A little while after the Eamonn Coghlan era, along came Sonia, emerging as a major star in the early 1990s. A glorious decade on Planet Sonia followed! She won gold at the 1994 European Championships (3000m), gold in the 5000m at the 1995 World Championships, and double gold (5000m and 10,000m) at the 1998 European Championships. She’s a twotime World Cross-Country Champion (over 4 km and 8 km, both in 1998). There were many more golds and silvers, world records too.

The highlight of Sonia’s career came at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, when she won silver in the 5000m. It was one of the greatest achievements ever by an Irish sportsperson. nia’s latest track experience, we moved on…until the next time. Whatever it is that makes some sports personalities divisive, had no place in Sonia’s make-up. She could never split opinion. We simply loved her.

She was magnificent.

Heartbreak and glory…

Humble days

Why did the Irish public love Sonia so unconditionally? The simple answer might be because, on her best days and nights, she was one of the world’s top athletes, an Irish sportstar who could destroy a world class field.

But our relationship with Sonia went much deeper than that. She was embedded deep in our hearts because of what we saw and felt: that incredible combination of honesty, courage and vulnerability.

This is at the core of our relationship with the Cobh woman, what so endeared her to the public. Running can be a lonely pursuit. Especially when you receive knocks, setbacks…as Sonia did. Rarely have I seen a sportsperson of such persistent courage, such honesty. In every race she ran, that honesty of effort was evident…everything left on the track in the pursuit of doing herself justice – and all over a remarkably long career, one that, let’s not forget, was marked by heartbreaks as well as glory. She never stopped believing, even when she sometimes seemed to be shadowed by cruel fate. She was tough…heroically disciplined, focussed, courageous. Sonia just kept running.

The Olympic Games (and other championships) have lost much of their magic now, tainted by doping and dopes, desperate dreamers who felt they had to embrace the darkness.

In the 1980s, we had no idea that use of performance-enhancing drugs by a minority of athletes was becoming a toxic secret norm in a parallel universe which was unknown to us. For most of us, the revelation came courtesy of the Ben Johnson bombshell in 1988. Now, sadly, as with cycling, we watch and wonder.

In the 1980s – before the sport’s credibility at elite level sadly began to ebb – Irish athletes were prominent during a golden era of middle-distance running. Eamonn Coghlan was my hero, yet he didn’t quite stir the emotions like Sonia would a few years later. John Treacy was remarkable, Marcus O’Sullivan, Frank O’Mara and Ray Flynn completing an impressive cast.

At the time, I was working as a journalist in Cavan. One of my big interviews was with an up and coming athlete called Catherina McKiernan. We chatted over the phone. I’m not sure why I didn’t pop out to Catherina’s home in Cornafean. Maybe I didn’t trust my longsuffering Toyota Starlet, by then increasingly resembling the type of car that disintegrated around the hapless clown in that circus act of old. Our conversation was doubtlessly marked by some shyness (her’s and mine). Catherina was humble and modest and on the brink of a greatness that she carried so lightly. It made for a nice feature in The Cavan Leader, in a county where the O’Neills football ruled!

By then, I’d been doing a bit of humble running of my own. I loved it, but didn’t persevere. I ran in the odd road race, usually finishing in the top three or four, feeling the adrenaline rush, while learning how punishing this sport was. Running was enjoyable, rewarding, satisfying…but competing at any level required ferocious commitment, discipline and heart, as draining mentally as it was physically. Joining Longford AC, I was

I hesitate to use the ‘soap opera’ term, for fear it might seem flippant. But I use it because Sonia’s extraordinary career did have many dramatic twists and turns. At times it was a drama. Following Sonia was one long, gripping and emotional rollercoaster ride. Maybe it felt this way with Sonia because we were so invested in her fortunes. While she wore her heart on her sleeve, our hearts were usually in our mouths. There were many great wins, but there were harrowing defeats too…when an expected or hoped for victory wasn’t achieved. Most notably, there was crushing disappointment at the 1996 Olympics, when Sonia collapsed (due to illness) during the 5000m final. At times, you almost wanted to look

‘And joy was her thing’ Where does she rank in the ‘Ireland’s greatest ever sportsperson’ list, if talk of such things we must! I’d place her in the top three, with Brian O’Driscoll and Padraig Harrington.

That is how great she was.

Some sportstars can win – achieve greatness even – without really stirring your heart, lifting a nation’s morale. Sonia stopped the nation, every time.

Ah, the memory of those atmospheric nights at top international meetings. A rainy night in Zurich! Gateshead, Oslo! All eyes on Sonia. Familiar gait, legs limbering, eyes utterly focussed…a portrait of discipline, determination, bravery. Her hunger and our hopes resting on her shoulders. The starting gun, and Sonia’s gone, into her stride, sometimes taking an early and commanding lead, more often playing the waiting game. The bell sounds; our eyes remain on the queen in green. So often she cruised over the line first, the strained expression on her face breaking into a satisfied smile.

Reaching out for an Irish flag, she saunters and smiles, knowing so well that on an athlete’s lonely journey, even the greatest natural talent needs to be moulded with sweat, sacrifice, and tears too. The nights of joy make everything worthwhile.

And joy was her thing. She absolutely loved running, including the unseen sacrifice. On her great days, you felt she could keep running forever, for this is what she was born to do.

Sonia. One word. Sonia. Brilliant, brave, unforgettable. What pride and pleasure she gave to Irish sports fans. Sonia…forever a hero in our hearts.
