Silence from Kepak amid Covid concerns < PAUL HEALY

A dramatic 20% overnight rise in the number of confirmed Covid-19

cases in Roscommon has exposed a sudden and worrying trend in this county.

By Tuesday of this week, the total number of cases in County Roscommon had risen to 298, an increase of 51 on the previous 24 hours.

Having been one of the least affected counties in Ireland since the arrival of the coronavirus a number of weeks ago, Roscommon has suddenly experienced a significant surge in cases – with the coronavirus spreading faster here now than anywhere else in Connacht.

Kepak management are remaining tight-lipped in relation to reports that up to 100 staff at their facility in Athleague have tested positive for the virus.

The Roscommon People directed a number of questions to Kepak (Ath-

league) on Wednesday, but received no response. These questions were submitted to a PR company, on the advice of Kepak HQ. Earlier this week, management at Cloverhill Nursing Home confirmed that 22 of its residents and 16 of its staff have contracted Covid-19. On page 17 of this issue, we publish a full statement

from Cloverhill Nursing Home.

There are approximately 320 people employed at the Kepak plant in Athleague. It is understood that all employees there were recently tested for Covid-19 and that up to 100 people tested positive.

The Roscommon People also directed a number of questions to the HSE, both in relation to Kepak in

Athleague and to possible smaller clusters in County Roscommon.

The HSE said that its National Outbreak Control Team for Covid-19 outbreaks in meat processing plants has initiated the development of guidance on the prevention and control of outbreaks of Covid-19 in such facilities. More coverage

The number of Covid-19 related deaths in Ireland has risen to 1,497. The Health Protection Surveillance Centre reported on Wednesday evening that it had been informed that a total of 10 people with Covid-19 had died in the previous 24 hours.

As of 11 am on Wednesday, the HPSC had been notified of 159 new confirmed cases of Covid-19. There is now a total of 23,401 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland.

The HSE is working to identify any contacts the patients may have had to provide them with information and advice to prevent further spread.

The HSE has confirmed that a Covid-19 Community Testing Static Site is based at The Lodge, Roscommon (beside Roscommon University Hospital). Appointments are by GP referral and this is a Covid-19 testing site only.

The Covid-19 Community Assessment Hub is based at the Primary Care Centre, Castlerea. Community Assessment Hubs were set up so that patients who are confirmed as Covid positive, and who require a face to face clinical assessment, can attend a community-based hub as near as possible to where they live. Patients can access these hubs for assessment by GP referral only.

Meanwhile, a new Covid-19 test centre is to open in Castlerea in the coming days. Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice, the Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, said that the ‘Fire Station building’ will be used as a test centre. Cllr. Fitzmaurice said that the HSE had been looking at potential premises’ in recent weeks and has now confirmed, in conjunction with Roscommon County Council, that the Fire Station building has been selected.

I have some concerns regarding my will and I would like your advice. I am a widower and made a will a few years ago leaving everything I own to my five children equally. Each of my children has children and if any of my children were to die before me I would like for my grandchildren to inherit their share. If any child of mine dies before me does that child’s share of my will pass to their children? If not who inherits their share?

Normally when a beneficiary (person receiving the inheritance) pre-deceases a Testator (person who makes a will) the gift will lapse and fail. However, an exception to this rule is contained within Section 98 of the Succession Act 1965. Section 98 provides that where a child pre-deceases a testator leaving children and such children are living at the time of the death of the testator the bequest shall not lapse.

Therefore, in your situation if your child predeceases you leaving grandchildren, the benefit that would have been received by your child is preserved and will pass to your deceased’s child’s estate.

It is important to note that the bequest will go to your deceased’s child’s estate and not necessarily to your grandchildren. The bequest will be divided in accordance with the terms set out in your deceased child’s will. Example: Your child dies before you leaving two children.

She has made a will leaving her entire estate to her boyfriend. Your bequest to her will not lapse by virtue of the fact she left children but this bequest will go to her boyfriend under the terms of her will.

What we liked…

‘MayDay: 24 Hours in Ireland’s Lockdown’, was a superb documentary, broadcast on RTE 1 TV last Thursday.

If you wish for your grandchildren to inherit rather than for the bequest to pass to your child’s estate then it would be important to update your will providing that such a bequest would pass to your grandchildren.

A diary of the times that are (part 9) Thursday

On the beautiful bog road near our house, you can go back in time…

On the bog road, all you see is the beauty of nature, an open span of gorze and furze and heather waiting for new generations to call and gaze.

I imagine two farmers meeting here, say 100 years ago.

They might have shaken hands; they’d almost certainly have paused and nodded and drifted closer and reflected on the day.

There would have been no talk of social distancing or cocooning or flattening the curve, or for that matter of Facebook, Instagram or Tik Tok, or of Brexit either, or, God forbid, political correctness. They’d have left Zoom for again too.

A few months ago, we didn’t really have time for the bog road. Now we do. And, for all the turmoil of these times, we’re all the better for that at least.

On the bog road, you can’t hear the traffic from the Athlone Road, you can’t hear the world at all. All you can hear is silence, punctuated by birds chirping and the rustle of some wildlife in the drains and bushes.

Just doing their thing, living their lives.

And this morning, more clearly and for longer than ever before, I heard a relentless and magnificent and defiant call of the Cuckoo. That beauty too had eluded me in recent years…until lockdown, aided by glorious weather, opened my eyes and ears a little more!

On the bog road, all around you, that stunning furze and gorse stretches out in a magnificent tapestry of colours, nature with its chest out proudly, welcoming us now, while waiting for new generations.

100 years ago, the two farmers might have talked of the weather, the stock, the neighbours, a letter from America perhaps, the fair, the political turmoil.

And then they would have gone on their way, perhaps wondering what life would be like 100 years from then.

Lapsing from the beauty of nature back into the mad social media maze, I see

where some annoying celebrity couple have caused a stir with their choice of name for their new baby.

Top entrepreneur extraordinaire Elon Musk and his partner, pop star Grimes, have named their baby son X Æ A-12.

That’s X Æ A-12. Seriously! Still, it’s lovely to see the old names coming back into fashion…

The old bog road ... all you can hear is silence.

The world is in turmoil. But, on a positive note, Bernard O’Shea and Marty Morrissey are back with a new RTE TV series.

According to a gushing Irish Independent Weekend magazine interview – conducted via an “unusually entertaining Zoom call” – Bernard and Marty are now officially an “unlikely comedy duo”.

Hot on the heels of their last televised escapades, apparently they’ve been roaming the country again, doing something. And, barring someone taking out an injunction (Gemma?

John? Anyone?), their ‘exploits’ are going to be presented on our screens, every Wednesday night.

Oh dear, just when we were finally getting used to Lockdown…

We’ve all been celebrating the great Bono’s (60th) birthday, as you know. But something a

journalist wrote in the Sunday Independent’s LIFE magazine worried me. She wrote: “Then I moved to Ireland and my feelings became complicated. Living here demanded I develop the same difficult relationship with Bono as everyone else had…”

In the same publication, a second journalist wrote: “Bono is a figure who allows us to perform our own Irishness”.

Well, when I read all that, naturally I immediately recalled a conversation I’d had with an old farmer when I was passing Roscommon Mart about six months ago.

The farmer and I initially engaged in small talk (weather, etc.). Then, when we got on to international rock stars/unofficial ambassadors, I specifically remember the farmer saying that he had not developed a relationship, difficult or otherwise, with Bono. At the time, I let it pass…

But, in light of the LIFE magazine reminder that we all have to develop a relationship, difficult or otherwise, with Bono, I contacted that farmer this week (Zoom).

Cocooning, he was holding the Farmers Journal in one hand, with a calculator in the other…he mumbled something about checking cattle prices.

After a bit of small talk, as ever we quickly got around to international rock stars. He was coy about whether or not he had remembered Bono’s birthday (“Mary may have got a card, she normally deals with birthdays”). No matter.

Then I asked my farmer friend if he agreed that Bono allows us to perform our own Irishness. “We were just saying that here last night” he replied, quick as a flash.

Then I went for it…I gently advised my friend that he needed to be clear in his mind as to his relationship, difficult or otherwise, with Bono. (That, after all, is what the Dublin 4 set said).

“You’re a good family man, you’re a small farmer, you’re trying to make a living, I know you’re worried about prices, but the intelligentsia need to know. Have you developed a relationship, difficult or otherwise, with Bono?”

He went silent. He held the Farmers Journal up in one hand and tipped his glasses closer to his forehead (very artsy, to be fair).

When he said “Paul, I still haven’t found

what I’m looking for”, I relaxed. I knew what he meant, on so many levels. I just knew that everything was going to be alright.

Monday

Watching a recording of The Sunday Game (yeah, I know!). Des Cahill asked great questions of the impressive GAA President John Horan, during which interview the latter effectively ruled out any GAA action this year. Extraordinary times. Sad times.

My only slightly negative comment on the programme would be that, at two hours, it was much too long. Still, it was nice to see it back, even in these surreal circumstances. It may not have been nice for Mayo fans, who were ‘treated’ to highlights and panel discussion (Stephen Rochford and Ciaran Whelan) on the one that really got away – the 2017 All-Ireland senior football final. I was in Croke Park that day; the agony (for Mayo) of those final minutes is almost as raw now as it was then.

It was strange – after less than three months of this Covid pandemic – seeing players embracing, and thousands of fans gathered together. It all seemed odd… which is a worrying sign of how we are already becoming used to this wretched social distancing.

NewsPeople Stolen bulldog ‘in urgent need of medical attention’

A Castlecoote resident says a bulldog which went missing from its owner’s home on Sunday last is in urgent need of medical attention.

Norma McDermott, who lives in Castlecoote, says that Matilda, a two-year-old female British bulldog, was stolen on Sunday, 10th of May. The dog went missing from her owner’s back garden between 3-6 pm.

Norma said: “Matilda needs urgent veterinary treatment. Without it there is a serious risk to the dog’s health. She is a very distinctive breed and colour; brown with a white stripe on her nose and a white chest. Matilda is a very quiet and gentle dog”.

The owner is asking the general public to please keep an eye out for the bulldog, and asks if anyone who finds her could kindly bring her to a vet as soon as possible and contact Norma on 083 893 3566. A reward will be given for the safe return of the dog.

Roscommon Mart report Online sale for weanlings: We had a good entry of stock at our first online sale of weanlings held on Tuesday last. There was a good trade for both bulls and heifers with a high percentage of lots getting sold.

Many of the customers viewed the stock before the sale and went on to bid online both at home and on site.

Online sales will continue each Tuesday for weanlings, and book-

Couple take litter into their own hands! < PAUL HEALY

A Rooskey couple who recently filled four bags with rubbish which had been dumped over a 500m stretch of road claim that passing motorists are responsible for the illegal dumping.

The man told the Roscommon People: “The rubbish was strewn along a 500m stretch on the R371 in Knockhall, Rooskey. I noticed it while I was out walking for some exercise.

I got really annoyed to see our area being used as a dumping ground. I’m convinced it’s passing motorists who are doing it, not locals.

“My wife and I decided to contact Roscommon County Council to see if they would provide bags, etc. so that we could pick this rubbish up ourselves.

“I have to say full marks to the Council, they were very helpful.

They sent out some bags, gloves and long-armed pinchers within two days. So we spent about an hour picking up the rubbish! It was mainly plastic mineral bottles, cans, coffee cups and crisp and sweet packaging”.

The couple are now encouraging other people in the community to be proactive and to take

Vita House Dolphin Car Wash in aid of Cancer Support Dolphin Car Wash at the Racecourse Road, Roscommon re-opens on Monday, 18th of May, and will donate the entire day’s income to Roscommon Cancer Support Centre.

The Cancer Support Centre at Vita House, Abbey Street, continues to operate our support and counselling services online and by phone. The Cancer Support Centre urges those needing support and reassurance at this exceptional time to keep in touch, whether existing or new clients of the service.

Speaking to the Roscommon People, a spokes-

person said: “Our fundraising opportunities for 2020 have been severely disrupted, and this will represent a significant boost, ensuring that the service continues to operate with minimal disruption. Our sincere thanks to Ian and the team at Dolphin Car Wash for their support and generosity, and to Emmet in Keen Print, who kindly sponsored the promotional signage for the event”.

The Dolphin Car Wash and Valeting in aid of Roscommon Cancer Support Vita House will be open on Monday, 18th of May from 9 am to 6 pm.

Is blatant non-compliance causing Covid to spread?

By now, I’m sure readers are aware of the Return to Work Safety Protocol document detailing an array of ‘essential measures’ for businesses launched last week by Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation Heather Humphreys.

While these new initiatives will no doubt change our workplace environments beyond recognition, (and, let’s face it, it’s highly likely we’ll never get back to what was our previous levels of normal), the thing is, they are absolutely necessary.

To be honest folks, a report by this very newspaper detailing statistics regarding a ‘sharp rise in Covid cases in Roscommon’ didn’t surprise me in the least. On several occasions since lockdown commenced, while making an essential visit to town to do the

weekly food shop, I took the decision to turn around and drive home. Despite urgent warnings from the HSE and the Gardaí against large gatherings, I personally witnessed many people openly breaking the social distancing rules.

Indeed, such was the Christmas Eve-like party atmosphere in Roscommon town on two Fridays in a row, I couldn’t even find a parking spot! Now, whether these idiots gathering in large groups are so arrogant they’re disregarding health warnings, believing the rules don’t apply to them, or they’re suffering from a delusional condition I call ‘denial’, the thing is, the spread of Covid across this county was possibly caused as a direct result of their blatant non-compliance!

Look folks, I sympathise with employers, and I imagine these new back-to-work guidelines will prove to be a difficult task, especially for local SMEs who may not find such measures to be sustainable – and that’s terribly sad. However, I do believe it’s going to be up to all business owners to meticulously manage the risk to both their staff and their customers/clients.

With that in mind, I’d urge all employers to put preparations in place this week and ensure, (as far as is practicable), that every single worker/customer is fully informed regarding the now essential preventative measures being implemented on their premises.

Remember readers, it’s up to every one of us – not just a few – to try and obstruct the spread of this pervasive virus.

Wishing all Leaving Cert students and their teachers the very best!

This year’s Leaving Cert has been cancelled and…long story short, students will now be offered the option of accepting grades calculated by their teachers. Alternatively, they can choose to sit their exams at a later date…postpandemic.

To be honest, this whole process, necessary though it is, raises many questions for me. Firstly, how fair is this on students who may be, let’s say troublesome, or, we’ll call a spade a spade, not exactly the teacher’s pet?

Could they be penalised for being, ahem, brats? Can we expect every poor tormented teacher to remain objective when grading such a student’s papers?

In addition, is this new system fair on teachers themselves? Essentially those having to deal with pushy

parents who’ll probably (not saying they will) be tempted to canvass them in the hope they’ll give their precious

offspring, dare I suggest, undeserved elevated grades?

Furthermore, will this new process spur a wave of

possible legal proceedings from students and parents against teachers if their grades result in a loss of their ‘dream’ courses? Sure what parent alive doesn’t want the absolute best for their child?

While I’m not a fan, I would however echo FF Deputy Thomas Byrne’s call for legislation to be put in place to protect teachers who may be feeling ‘obligated’ to engage with canvassing parents…should this scenario arise. In addition, I would hope and expect that all students, whatever their circumstances, are afforded a fair and equitable path toward the next stage of their lives.

Well colour me cynical! Last week, the Sisters of Charity confirmed they’d received ‘Vatican approval’ for the transfer of ownership of the St. Vincent’s Healthcare group to a ‘new independent charitable body’, which will apparently be called St. Vincent’s Holdings CLG. While this announcement should hopefully remove concerns regarding a religious influence being brought to bear on the governance of the new

National Maternity Hospital at Elm Park in Dublin, I have to say I’ll find this difficult to believe.

It’s well known that the Holy See and the Catholic Church’s rituals and vocabulary have always exalted men over women, so how can we trust them to keep their noses out of our healthcare? I mean sexism is kind of embedded into the structure…isn’t it?

Okay, for the sake of objectivity and fairness, I

admit the Catholic Church does perform and provide a wonderful service for devotees; and this must be recognised.

However, as a believer, (albeit one who has long since drifted away from active service), it’s my fear that the tenets of what is possibly one of the world’s most dominant patriarchies will never allow women to have full control over our own reproductive rights! But that’s just my opinion – and I do sincerely hope I’m wrong!

I read a very disturbing study last week regarding the damages caused by consuming too much alcohol during lockdown.

I don’t mind telling you readers, the contents of that article disturbed me on such a level that right there and then, without any further thought into the matter, I turned to hubby and immediately announced, “that’s it darling…there’ll be no more reading for me!”

NewsPeople Lanesboro Tri Club Lockdown Challenge aiding Palliative Care Last week, Lanesboro Triathlon Club members began a marathon run in aid of the Palliative Care Department at Roscommon University Hospital. The members of the club, which is ten years old this year, are taking the number of days they have been established (3,650) as inspiration to run 3,650km in just fourteen days in a bid to raise €2,000 for the Palliative Care Department.

All Government guidelines regarding Covid-19 are being adhered to. Joe O’Brien of Lanesboro Triathlon Club said: “The aim was to raise €2000 for the Palliative Care Department and I suggested that as the club were celebrating 10 years that the aim should be €1 per day per year, making a total of €3650. “With a few days to still go I am delighted that the public’s generosity has been overwhelming and as of Tuesday the figure raised stood at €4,275”. €17k to improve local playgrounds – Naughten

Local TD Denis Naughten has welcomed the allocation of €17,247 from Minister Katherine Zappone to upgrade four local playgrounds in Ballinasloe, Ballyforan, Lecarrow and Monksland.

“The funding, which has been provided to Galway and Roscommon County Councils, is to upgrade existing playgrounds,” stated Denis Naughten.

Deputy Feighan: ‘We need a dedicated Minister for Tourism’

Fine Gael TD Frank Feighan has called for a dedicated Ministry for Tourism to be established by the next Government. Currently the tourism portfolio and its related responsibilities are grouped together with transport and sport under one ministry.

Speaking in the Dáil, Deputy Feighan that the tourism industry is now on its knees due to Covid-19.

He said that the tourism industry needs a dedicated ministry to work with industry and to facilitate recovery as quickly as possible.

Murphy wants Beef Forum reconvened

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has asked Minister Michael Creed to try and reconvene the Beef Forum in order to “at least provide moral support for farmers, many of whom are worried about their livelihoods”.

Senator Murphy said: “We need to realise that the price of beef is still a critical issue, and we need to produce a definite plan for reopening of marts”.

Jesus will not leave us alone. He won’t make us children of God in Baptism only to leave us “orphans”. He assures us in today’s Gospel (see Romans 8:14–17). He asks the Father to give us His Spirit, to dwell with us and keep us united in the life. He shares with the Father. We see the promised gift of His Spirit being conferred in today’s First Reading. The scene from Acts apparently depicts a primitive Confirmation rite. Philip, one of the first deacons (see Acts 6:5), proclaims the Gospel in the non-Jewish city of Samaria. The Samaritans accept the Word of God (see Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 2:13) and are baptised. It remains for the Apostles to send their representatives, Peter and John, to pray and lay hands on the newly baptised – that they might receive the Holy Spirit. This is the origin of our sacrament of Confirmation (see Acts 19:5–6), by which the grace of Baptism is completed and believers are sealed with the Spirit promised by the Lord. We remain in this grace so long as we love Christ and keep His commandments. And strengthened in the Spirit whom Jesus said would be our Advocate, we are called to bear witness to our salvation – to the tremendous deeds that God has done for us in the name of His Son. In today’s Psalm, we celebrate our liberation. As He changed the sea into dry land to free the captive Israelites, Christ suffered that He might lead us to God, as we hear in today’s Epistle. This is the reason

for our hope – the hope that sustains us in the face of a world that cannot accept His truth, the hope that sustains us when we are maligned and defamed for His name’s sake. 8 YEARS AGO Cheers! Boil water notice lifted in Castlerea A boil water notice from Roscommon County Council which has been in place in the Castlerea area for over two years has been lifted.

The notice was put in place after traces of cryptosporidium were found in the water supply. The news has been welcomed by Fianna Fail Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice and Independent Cllr. John Murphy.

The Roscommon Lamb Festival held over the Bank Holiday weekend has been hailed as a huge success with all the events well attended and great interest from the general public, locals and the many visitors who visited the town.

The world record for hand held sheep shearing was achieved in Loughnaneane Park on Sunday last, May 6th. A total of 71 shearers from all over the country attended the event and there was a unique moment at one stage when a 9-year-old shearer sat alongside an 86-year-old shearer.

There were big crowds at all the events which included a cookery demonstration with ‘celebrity chef’ Neven Maguire on Friday night, a Brazilian-style barbeque on Saturday night and a ceili on Sunday night.

Air ambulance launch < PAUL HEALY

There’s good news for the health services in Co. Roscommon this week – with confirmation that the long-awaited air ambulance service will be launched at Custume Barracks, Athlone by the Minister for Health on Monday next, May 21st.

Minister for Health James Reilly will be accompanied by the Minister for Defence, Alan Shatter and by local Government TD Frank Feighan.

It is understood to be Minister Reilly’s first foray into County Roscommon since the explosive Roscommon A&E closure controversy began last summer.

However it is clear that the air ambulance service will not operate at night, something which critics have ridiculed.

Green light for Primary Care Centres in Boyle and Ballaghaderreen Local Fine Gael TD Deputy Frank Feighan has warmly welcomed priority funding plans for the development of new Primary Care Centres in Boyle and Ballaghaderreen, announced as part of the Government’s multibillion euro stimulus programme.

5 YEARS AGO From Frank Brandon column: Comics and the passing years

Today in the shop I got a nostalgic look at the past when a collection of Beano and Dandy comics arrived in with a load of books and other stuff. In the Dandy I read again of the adventures of Desperate Dan, and Smasher, and Blinky, and Korky the Cat, while Dennis the Menace, Gnasher, Billy Whizz and the Bash Street Kids were the easily-remembered heroes of the Beano. In a peculiar way it was a little bit sad, and, as all of us old folk find out eventually, life has almost passed us by before we know it.

When I was reading those comics many years ago, men of my present age seemed like dinosaurs, and I used to wonder how could they still be around. Little did I think back then that it would all go by so quickly, and that I would now be in the position where young children are wondering the same about me, and politely asking me do I need a hand at even the most menial job. What’s even worse is that I do!

Daly declines FF offer

Efforts by Fianna Fáil HQ to woo Ballygarbased GP Martin Daly have failed. The party, desperate to regain the seat it has traditionally held in Roscommon, approached the popular doctor to see if he would consider running for Fianna Fáil in the next General Election.

Dr. Daly, a party supporter, gave the offer careful consideration before eventually declining.

News of the approach will give food for thought to some ambitious Fianna Fáil councillors in the locality, confirming, as it does, long-held speculation that Dr. Daly was on FF HQ’s ‘wanted’ list.

1 YEAR AGO Independents shocked by quick Coalition deal! < PAUL HEALY

Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and Independent councillors Tom Crosby and Laurence Fallon stunned the remaining Independents on Roscommon County Council by moving at speed to agree a historic Coalition deal on Tuesday night.

The Roscommon People can reveal that the unlikely ‘Group of Ten’ finalised the pact at a latenight meeting in Hannon’s Hotel. The six Fianna Fáil councillors, two Fine Gael councillors and Independents Tom Crosby and Laurence Fallon signed a five-year Coalition deal that will see Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael share power on Roscommon County Council for the first time in decades.

In brokering a deal so quickly, the new FF/FG/ Independents alliance outmaneuvered several Independents who were anxious to pursue an alternative Coalition. Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice of Fianna Fáil will be the first Cathaoirleach of the new Council, followed in year two by Cllr.

Liam Callaghan (Fine Gael). Fianna Fáil will hold the coveted position of Cathaoirleach for three years. One of Cllr. John Naughten, Tom Crosby and Laurence Fallon will also serve a year in the role.

If they’re still talking ‘up there’ in Dublin (should it be over there?) about the good times being back, our position remains the same: We haven’t seen much new boom-time in rural Ireland yet.

SMEs are up against it, farmers are under pressure, services (unforgivably) are being withdrawn or cut, there is no job creation worth talking about…and don’t start us on that wretched broadband.

When I say services are being cut, I mean it. I was passing through a West Roscommon village on Monday and had to double back to check if my eyes were deceiving me or not. Was that (familiar) small landmark family shop really closed? I did a u-turn, and sure enough the shelves were empty and bare. Then I noticed the almost apologetic An Post sign over the door.

Family shop and Post Office. That probably explains it. The post office presumably went, and then the shop went with it. Another era ends, another social hub battered into submission, reduced to memories.

T

he years go by so fast and everything that happens is an experience for current life. I arrived in Ireland in 2001 and since then there have been several experiences that I have lived through in this country. I’ve seen the currency change from punts to euro, remember the terror of 9/11, and the worry over the Foot and Mouth crisis… but nothing compares to what we are witnessing at the moment.

The coronavirus pandemic is completely different; we are all still absorbing it all. It’s a pandemic where everyone is affected simultaneously, regardless of class, religion, age, ethnicity or nationality. But it is clear from the painful statistics that our elderly are the most vulnerable and at-risk group of this silent and dangerous virus.

Not to mention the other high-risk categories, such as those with high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, etc.

My daughter and I recently watched the movie Five Feet Apart, a film about Cystic Fibrosis.

I’m sorry to say, but my lack of information became obvious, as I didn’t know about the horrific nature of this disease. And I was very touched about the contagion of the patients with CORONAVIRUS. Our concern does not stop there, because information is coming from everywhere. Sometimes it is difficult because we don’t know what to believe. It is even more difficult for foreigners who have their hearts embedded in two countries. We are all jumping from branch to branch following local news, and most of us Brazilians are trying to follow the Brazilian news as well. Where the danger lies is in the ‘fake news’ which is rife on social media platforms, WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. So please, all of us, let’s look for reliable sources of information.

We all know the wonderful work that the medical profession is doing worldwide; they are normal people like the rest of us, leaving their families to fight against this virus that has quickly spread worldwide. But also, we must mention the many other professions that are taking risks

just by having to go to work. The supermarkets and factories are an example of them.

An example very close to our community are the factory workers, particularly in food processing. There are a lot of people employed in this industry, working hard to keep the supermarkets supplied. The risk of infection among these workers, who operate in close proximity to each other, is very high and there are several confirmed cases locally to date.

I believe that today the most important thing is to be sincere, learn to identify the symptoms and immediately isolate yourself if you suspect you may have contracted the virus.

Most of us are at home, so we can use this time to make an assessment of our lives, we can learn to know each other again. There is so much to do online these days, we have never had so many free online courses, or singers whom we love performing wonderful ‘Live’ shows.

Unfortunately, there is also another side to all this. It is a cause of anxiety for many people and for some, there is also danger. There has been a notable increase in reports of domestic violence across the globe during lockdown. It is necessary to be looking out for each other, watching from afar and offering support. A phone call to a friend or online support service can save lives.

We all heard about someone who contracted the virus and was shopping or something like that. Let’s do our part and stay at home. Perhaps the HSE does not yet have all the information available in several languages. But nowadays Google translate does it for you in seconds, so information is accessible to all nationalities in one way or another.

I have been following two Brazilian pages on Instagram on a daily basis. Ideal for those of us without much English. Mahakarmayogabrasil – with three daily classes. The best hour for me is 11 am Irish time. Fabiotostes – Functional class every day – Irish hours: 2.30 pm, roscommonpilates, and roscommonyoga.

Personally, I think the most effective thing to do is wash our hands thoroughly and regularly.

Stay aware of all symptoms. Isolate if you have symptoms of the virus or someone in your home has.

A pandêmia de Coronavírus é completamente diferente, ainda estamos absorvendo tudo.

Uma pandêmia em que todos são afetados simultaneamente, independentemente de classe, religião, idade, etnia ou nacionalidade. Mas fica claro pelas estatísticas dolorosas que nossos idosos são o grupo mais vulneráveis e em risco para esse vírus silencioso e perigoso. Sem mencionar as outras categorias de alto risco, como pressão alta, diabetes, doenças cardíacas, etc.

Minha filha e eu assistimos recentemente ao filme Five Feet Apart, um filme sobre fibrose cística. Sinto muito, mas minha falta de informação se tornou óbvia porque eu não sabia sobre a delicadeza desta doença. E fiquei muito emocionado com o contágio dos pacientes com CORONAVIRUS. Nossa preocupação não pára por aí, porque as informações vêm de todos os lugares. Às vezes é difícil porque não sabemos em que acreditar. É ainda mais difícil para nós estrangeiros que têm o coração incorporado em dois países. Estamos todos pulando de galho em galho seguindo as notícias locais e a maioria de nós brasileiros também está tentando acompanhar as notícias Brasileiras.

Onde o perigo está nas “notícias falsas”, que são comuns nas plataformas de mídia social, WhatsApp, Facebook etc. Então, por favor, todos nós, vamos procurar fontes confiáveis de ​​ informações.

Todos conhecemos o maravilhoso trabalho que a profissão médica está realizando em todo o mundo; eles são pessoas normais como o resto de nós, deixando suas famílias para lutar contra esse vírus que se espalhou rapidamente pelo mundo. Mas também devemos mencionar as muitas outras profissões que estão assumindo riscos apenas por ter que ir trabalhar. Os supermercados e fábricas são um exemplo deles.

Um exemplo muito próximo da nossa comunidade são os trabalhadores de frigorificos, particularmente no processamento de alimentos. Há muitas pessoas empregadas nesse setor, trabalhando duro para manter os supermercados abastecidos. O risco de infecção entre esses trabalhadores, que operam em

Mas a maioria de nós estamos em casa.

Podemos usar esse tempo para fazer uma avaliação em nossas vidas, aprender a nos conhecer novamente. Hoje em dia, há muito o que absorver on-line; nunca tivemos tantos cursos ou cantores que gostamos fazendo Lives maravilhosas.

Infelizmente, há também um outro lado nisso tudo. Há ansiedade para muitas pessoas e, para algumas, também de conviver com o perigo. Houve um aumento notável nos relatos de violência doméstica em todo o mundo durante o confinamento. É necessário estar olhando um para o outro, observando de longe e oferecendo apoio.

Uma ligação para um amigo ou serviço de suporte on-line pode salvar vidas.

Todos nos escutamos falar de alguem que contrario o virus que estava fazendo compras ou algo parecido. Vamos fazer a nossa parte fique em casa. Talvez “Hse” ainda não tenha todas as informações em diversas linguas. Mas hoje em dia google translate faz isso por voçê em segundos.

Todas informações estão acessiveis para nos estrangeiros de uma forma ou de outra.

TV Mass: Plaudits pour in for Roscommon students < PAUL HEALY

The role of students from Roscommon in a recent special televised Youth Mass has attracted praise from all corners of the world!

Glowing tributes have been paid to the wonderful contributions of Convent of Mercy, Roscommon students Nessa Mannion and Hazel and Emily Murray, and CBS student Jamie Finnegan (pictured).

The Mass, which had ‘Hope’ as its theme, was broadcast live on RTE TV on Sunday, 19th of April last.

The Mass was celebrated in Maynooth, and the celebrant was the Bishop of Elphin, Kevin Doran.

The Mass featured stunning music, singing and reading(s) by the Roscommon students, and viewers also saw beauti-

ful images of the county town during the closing credits.

The Mass was based on the monthly Youth Masses which have been held (prior to the Covid-19 restrictions) in the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon.

Marie Gillooly, one of the organisers of the Youth Masses, was very involved in the preparations for the recent ceremony in Maynooth.

Speaking to the Roscommon People recently, Marie said that the response to the Mass has been “overwhelming”.

Paying tribute to the young people who were involved, Ms. Gillooly said they had put a huge amount of effort in and were a great credit to Roscommon.

She said that hundreds of emails, letters and cards have

been sent to the Parish Office in Roscommon, as well as separate correspondence to many of the organisers. They have received feedback from all over the world.

Many of those who got in touch spoke of being deeply moved by the beautiful ceremony. Some of those who got in contact have been bereaved at this time (not

exclusively due to Covid-19).

A number of those people described how they had received great solace, comfort and peace from watching the Mass.

Marie Gillooly: “Many of those who have corresponded said that the Mass was so beautiful and meaningful, that it was as if the participants were speaking directly to them.

“Many people who have been cocooning got in touch to say how inspired they were, how comforting they found it.

The words beautiful, meaningful and uplifting were used time and time again”.

An Irish priest who is a Chaplain to 96 elderly residents in a nursing home in London wrote: “It lifted a veil of sadness as the residents here have not had a visit from family members or friends since the 20th of March. They truly feel the isolation. That Mass bridged a distance and connected them to a world of prayer, peace and presence”.

Statement from Cloverhill Nursing Home Cloverhill Nursing Home in County Roscommon has confirmed that following recent tests, 22 residents and 16 staff at the facility have tested positive for Covid-19.

One resident is in hospital while the others are being cared for in the nursing home.

Seamus Crawley, Director of Sonas (the company that runs Cloverhill) said the highly infectious virus was presenting unprecedented challenges for residents, their loved ones and staff members.

“The most important thing to stress is that all our residents are continuing to receive the best quality of care possible from a dedicated and caring team” Mr. Crawley said.

“These results are a huge concern, but residents who tested positive and negative are being cared for appropriately. Right now, they

are the focus of all our resources and energies”.

Mr. Crawley said that the residents and their families have been informed of the results.

“We would like to thank them for their understanding and the tremendous support they are giving us. Our staff have established great relationships and friendships with residents and their families over the years, so there is a real sense of community in Cloverhill and that we’ll face this challenge together”.

Mr. Crawley continued: “This is an incredibly difficult time for our employees and we would like to pay tribute to the dedicated and highly professional team in Cloverhill and thank them for the tremendous care they are providing to residents throughout this emergency”.

Mr. Crawley has said that contingency plans were in place for staff to go off work and those

plans had been activated. He said management is happy with both the level of staffing in the home at present and with the stocks of Personal Protection Equipment available for staff. He said the HSE had just delivered supplies of PPE to the home.

“Any staff members who have tested positive for the virus are now self-isolating.

An employee assistance and wellbeing programme has also been made available to them”.

Planning and testing

Mr. Crawley has said that Cloverhill had put additional infection control measures and contingency plans in place in early March.

“Strict visiting restrictions were imposed

at Cloverhill from March 6th on the advice of Nursing Homes Ireland. Our contingency plans included additional supplies of PPE gear and the redeployment of additional staff if required. All National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) and HIQA guidelines are being followed and we are liaising and working closely with both organisations on a regular basis”.

Mr. Crawley continued: “Nursing homes care for our most vulnerable citizens and these are the people which are most at risk from this virus. While most of the people who have sadly succumbed to the virus have been residents of nursing homes, it’s also important to remember that the majority of residents who’ve tested positive for Covid-19 have recovered from the virus”.

McDermott wants more aid for SMEs

Covid-19: Update from local Oireachtas members Deputy Denis Naughten

Denis Naughten TD is calling on the HSE to immediately convene its multi-agency group on the meat industry to address flaws in the Covid protection measures and to make recommendations to the National Public Health Emergency Team.

“Ahead of the start of re-opening the economy next week we must address the fundamental problems within the meat processing sector which could be replicated in other parts of industry and which could be catastrophic,” stated Denis Naughten.

“I have also requested to the Dáil Business Committee that this be discussed in Dáil Eireann next week.

“Since I highlighted this issue in Dáil Eireann two weeks ago flaws have been clearly highlighted in terms of social distancing, lack of clear information on Covid-19 and on self-isolation”.

Deputy Claire Kerrane

Sinn Féin TD for Roscommon/ Galway Claire Kerrane has called on the Government to include children and adults with a disability in the Covid-19 exit strategy.

Deputy Kerrane said: “It is both disappointing and alarming for people with a disability and their families that the government has failed to recognise and provide for their unique circumstances when charting a path out of the current restrictions.

“The reality for individuals and families across the country is that the day to day services they rely on have been put on hold during the crisis. Parents of children with a disability have had no respite and have had to take on additional roles in terms of education, therapy, and care.

“The roadmap as published makes no reference to these families nor does it address the unique circumstances carers face when returning to work within the government’s phased plan”.

Senator Eugene Murphy

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has urged the public to be vigilant, stay alert and be very cautious about movements as official figures show “an alarming increase” in coronavirus figures in County Roscommon.

Senator Murphy said: “Now is the time for Roscommon people to be really careful and not take any shortcuts.

I will be in ongoing contact with the HSE and urging more testing to be carried out.

The huge increase in numbers of people affected in the county was, to say the least, alarming”.

Cllr. Marty McDermott (Fianna Fáil) has called for maximum supports for SMEs and people who are working from home as part of the Government’s response to the Covid-19 crisis.

Cllr. McDermott, who spoke on these issues at a recent Roscommon County Council meeting, said that it is essential that the new Government, when formed, moves to support small businesses to the maximum degree in this “unprecedented situation”.

Cllr. McDermott said that creative steps should be taken in relation to rates, VAT, etc. These major overheads should be “parked”, he said, at least until businesses which have had to close due to the pandemic “have their feet back on the ground”.

In relation to employees who are working at home now and into the future, Cllr. McDermott said that he has been lobbied by a number of people about inadequate broadband. He called for this problem to be urgently addressed.

Castlerea Fire Station now a Covid test centre

A new Covid-19 test centre is to open in Castlerea in the coming days.

Cllr.

Paschal Fitzmaurice, the Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, said that the ‘Fire Station building’ will be used as a test centre.

Cllr. Fitzmaurice said that the HSE had been looking at potential premises’ in recent weeks and has now confirmed, in conjunction with Roscommon County Council, that the Fire Station building has been selected.

Cllr. Fitzmaurice said that it is essential that as many people as possible are tested as quickly as possible.

A beauty that shines through the darkness < PAUL D’ALTON

The brilliant Canadian folk singer Joni Mitchell wrote a lyric which is as poignant today as it was in the 1970s: “You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone”.

How true that is during these hard times for all of us.

And yet, with some outdoor restrictions lifted earlier this month by the government, it almost feels as if we’re able to slightly pull back the curtains, fling open the windows and let the sunshine in.

And, boy, hasn’t that sunshine lifted us in the last week or so? A time, after so much depression, for a bit of lustre and cheering us up.

So it is that it reminded me that for all of us who have been cocooned and cooped up for weeks and weeks, we can begin once again to remind ourselves of the quiet beauty of our wonderful county of Roscommon, something so many of us, understandably, just take for granted.

The other day, on a blistering, cloudless afternoon, Mother and I took a drive through Mote Park. My God, did it lift our spirits. Other locals, strictly abiding by social distancing, waved and smiled to us and each other, cars which passed us did the same and tooted their horns.

There was a sense of joy, of cautious relief which shone as bright as the sun.

It was truly a glorious sight after spending so much time locked down, with only essential dashes to the shops and pharmacy.

It also further brought back to me, as Joni Mitchell wrote, that when you live in your home place for so long, you forget the enthralling beauty which surrounds us.

Roscommon is often dismissed, wrongly, a No Go area for tourists and visitors. What total, utter tosh! And we certainly saw that on our first drive out since lockdown.

Stopping for a moment, we stood for a few quiet minutes on a lane in Mote Park, with no-one else in sight, and all we could hear was the glorious chorus of birdsong, the ripple of sunlight flickering through the endless avenue of trees.

We might all enjoy a drink or two come cocktail hour at 5 pm every day – I certainly do! – but just standing there, breathing in the beauty of this part of our stunning county, was a tonic in itself.

It lifted the heart, sharpened the senses and without in any way making a big deal of it, both of us genuinely

felt refreshed and invigorated on our return to the house.

Like the majesty of Sliabh Ban, the sprawling wonderments of Lough Ree and Lough Key, the old, neat, enchanting stone walls on the road from Roscommon through Fuerty and on to Castlecoote and the River Suck…further reminders of the home-grown, stunning place we are lucky to call home.

Sadly, we couldn’t drop by my family’s old pub D’Alton’s, or Terry Leyden’s Castlecoote Lodge but, as night follows day, you bet that soon we will be.

The same with a short spin to Portrunny: social distancing adhered to by everyone, but the lap of the water, the silver-blue glint of the lake, the birdlife swooping past us like kaleidoscopic kites…magical, a further tonic, a further cheer you up, lifting of the spirits.

And without further indulging in hyperbole, when we emerge from this tunnel, not only will we cherish not just our frontline staff and our family and friends with a deeper sense of respect and love, but I think it’s fair to say that we’ll all feel the same about our county.

As I said, it’s natural to take for granted the place you’re used to, to pass little heed on the rolling, gentle, verdant fields which surround us, in much the same way previously we’ve sometimes taken for granted the people that we love, which is only natural.

But many good things will come out of this, you can be sure of that. I can’t emphasise enough that we’ll fall in love again deeply with our county and everything it brings to us naturally.

Stand on the bridge at Castlecoote, watch the calm river floating beneath you, not thundering annoying traffic, just the golden silence and calmness of which we can, and forever now, will be grateful.

So if you are able to, safely, try and get out before the lockdown finally passes, even if just for half an hour. It’s a good as the best ever poured pint of porter. Plus, having been out for a spin, you look forward to returning to your home which for weeks has felt like a perennial prison.

The poet and playwright W.B. Yeats wrote in his play Cathleen ni Houlihan of the four “beautiful green fields”, a reference to our four provinces occupied then by the British.

How apt those eloquent words were then when he and Lady Gregory wrote them, and their meaning are even more so today. This time we’ve been colonized by a virus that has tried to take those beautiful four fields from us, but it won’t.

And when we take them back, embrace them once again, they’ll truly have an even more special place in our hearts and souls. And, I’d wager, to go back to Joni Mitchell, no longer will we not know what we’ve got.

Poetry in a pandemic…

The Covid-19 pandemic has inspired some Roscommon People readers to pen topical poetry! * More poems/songs in forthcoming issues

Covid-19 Vincent Pierse You people of Ireland you must not despair, Because of this virus that is everywhere, Take heed of your doctors and medics also, And be sure to keep your distance wherever you go.

In China this virus first came to light, I heard of it while watching TV late at night, I said, “China, sure that’s a long way away”, And I’m sure ‘twas in Italy the very next day.

The virus it spreads at a rapid pace, We are worried it will wipe out the whole human race, We must do all we can to keep it at bay, So I have decided at home I will stay.

Our Taoiseach Leo, he was quick on the ball, I must give him praise, although we used to vote Fianna Fáil, He being a doctor he knew what to do, To slow down the spread of this terrible flu.

The gloves and the masks are a help I suppose, Because where this virus is, nobody knows, So people play your part when you’re out every day By keeping this horrible virus at bay.

You young courting couples you must stay apart, I know it is hard not seeing your sweetheart, You must stay at home, that’s the right thing to do, And not bring home to your parents this horrible flu.

So when all this is over, which I hope will be soon, We can all step outdoors, no need to cocoon, We can then hug our grandchildren as we have oft done before, And hope that this virus we’ll see nevermore.

Quarantine

Appeal to motorists to slow down after pet dog hit by car and killed Golf Links Road, Roscommon Dear Editor, On Tuesday, 5th of May last, my little boy’s dog Max was hit by a car and killed on the Golf Links Road at approximately 5 pm-5.30 pm.

Our back garden is secure, but somehow he got out onto the road. A friend of my wife’s found him lying on the footpath outside our house and rang her. My wife was in town shopping with our little boy and they came home to find his dog already dead, with a pool of blood under his head.

As anyone can imagine, that’s an awful thing for a young child to see. My son was hysterical.

At the moment, kids have very little outlet for fun. No football, no going to friends’ houses, cinema, etc. One thing they do have is their pets, and my son loved his little dog. Very few people in Roscommon wouldn’t have

seen him walking his dog with us at some point.

I would ask any person who was walking or driving on the stretch of the Golf Links Road after the level crossing (coming out of town) who saw what happened to contact us via the Roscommon People (they have our details). Our road has several houses on either side of it, but that seems to make no difference to some people, people who think it’s okay to drive at speed through a residential area. Would slowing down a bit for 30 seconds or so inconvenience people that much?

Finally, to the motorist who did knock down and kill our little boy’s dog: you’ve left a seven-year-old boy heartbroken and crying every night for his little friend. I hope you’re proud of yourself.

As this unthinkable situation shows no sign to wane, One day at a time, as we await the demise of Covid-19.

III In the crisis came a lockdown, on both travel and jobs, And for the vulnerable, you must keep out of the mobs.

A shutdown on the pubs and it’s dear, oh dear me.

The likes in auld Ireland, no prophet did foresee.

Supermarkets and chemists, they reign supreme, As they supply the essentials, in the Covid-19.

IV Yours truly is in his eighties and cocooned in his home.

Looked after by gallant neighbours, not once did they moan.

I’m like a judge in the law courts, with my hair hanging down.

Can do nothing about it, only look in the mirrors and frown, Let’s pray, we are not done living and Covid to go on the wane, Then look back at the lessons learned, from the Covid-19.

Reader takes issue with tone of front page report Athleague, Co. Roscommon Dear Editor, The words ‘sharp intake of breath’ spring to mind on reading last week’s Roscommon People front page article (‘Sharp rise in Covid cases in Roscommon’). The overall tone of the piece is bordering on the intemperate with a strong whiff of ‘them’ and ‘us’ about it.

It’s a given that the Covid-19 virus does not recognise nationality, colour, creed nor any other marker of the human condition. It sickens and kills indiscriminately. Any suggestion, any sub-textual hint of a suggestion, that “nonnative members of the community” may be responsible for the “sharp rise in Covid cases in Roscommon” sets a very dangerous precedent and fuels the not-so-subtle racial anecdotes one hears frequently.

There is much media evidence in recent weeks, particularly during the Easter bank holiday period, that some of our own citizens were flouting HSE guidelines and were discouraged at Garda checkpoints from continuing journeys deemed

non-essential. If there is “growing concern” (a phrase used twice in the article) about people not following HSE guidelines, then it should apply equally to all who live on this island.

We are happy in the good times to have our coffee served by “non-native members of the community”, our shelves packed by them, our hospitals and nursing homes staffed by them, and other less enticing jobs carried out by them.

As a largely monolingual nation, we are often impressed by the facility of these workers in ‘our’ language, English. With the availability of satellite TV and the Internet it stretches credulity to suggest that “non-Irish workers” are somehow less familiar with what it takes to spread and combat this virus.

Language is a wonderful tool. Someone once said: “Language has the power to raise an elevator and we use it to ring a doorbell”. What we should never do with it is to perpetrate the myth of the ‘other’. The history of twentieth-century Europe has seen too much of that.

Dear Editor, In your column recently, you described Johnny Logan as a gentleman.

Well, Johnny’s spat with Dickie Rock…it’s only a bit of ‘ould’ jealous rivalry, but one thing’s for sure, nobody can come near ‘Spit on Me’ Dickie for singing.

His is a true voice; even Neil Hannon thinks he’s fabulous.

Many’s the time as kids we stole in under the canvas at the carnivals in Lanesboro back in the late 1960s and early ‘70s to see him.

He was sheer class, and still is, as we saw on Brendan Grace’s ‘Forgetme-not’ show (shown following the comedian’s death). I’ll never forget the evening before a Dickie Rock gig, a few of us asked him for his autograph, and one of the lads said he didn’t want it, adding an insult (something about ‘big ears’). Dickie gave him a winklepicker up the behind – he was sore for a day or two after. A true gentleman was Dickie too!

Ah…those were the days, my friend, we thought they’d never end!

Wonderful response to Pieta House fundraiser I was so inspired by the whole effort that I got up at 5.15 am to do my own Darkness into Light walk…I heard the Dawn Chorus, and the cuckoo!

As I settled down to watch the Late Late on Friday night, I have to admit that my expectations could hardly have been lower, with a line-up of reasonably well-known, but hardly exciting, musical guests, a couple of others like our ex-President, Mary McAleese, still no live audience, and Ryan Tubridy understandably struggling to generate any real atmosphere.

But what I didn’t know at the time was that the show was essentially a nationwide appeal on behalf of Pieta House, and by the time I climbed the stairs to hit for the bed, I was on such a high at the success of the show and the generosity of the Irish people.

Almost €2 million was raised over the two-hour duration of the show, money that will go to fund essential therapy hours at Pieta House, and ensure that their 24/7 crisis line remains open.

Under normal circumstances the annual Darkness Into Light Walk would have taken place on Friday night/Saturday morning, and more than 250,000 people were scheduled to take part over five continents. Last year the walk raised more than €6 million. This year, Covid-19 meant that everything was called off and the entire fundraising effort collapsed.

Back in 1992, six top female Irish artists released an album – ‘A Woman’s Heart’ – which sold more copies than any other album in Irish chart history. Three of the original artists, Mary and Frances Black, and Sharon Shannon, along with Blues singer, Mary Coughlan, were guests on Friday night. Three of the four

have struggled with addictions, leading to mental health problems, and all talked about needing and getting help.

Along with Pieta attendee, Paul McEvoy, they put the message out very strongly that the help is out there – it’s a matter of seeking it out.

Every one of us knows someone who is struggling – oftentimes it can get too much, so we should all try to be aware, look out for telltale signs, and do what we can to help people.

But oftentimes it takes real counsellors, like those at Pieta House, to give such sufferers the help and support they need.

Anyway, it was an amazing response by the Irish people. I was so inspired by the whole effort that I got up at 5.15 am to do my own Darkness into Light walk, and for the first time in my life I actually paid attention to and appreciated the famous Dawn Chorus. For years I have listened to Derek Mooney and others tell us about the

wonder and beauty of the Dawn Chorus, but until now I had never experienced it, and indeed thought it was all pie in the sky.

On Saturday morning as I went down the stairs the only sound I could hear was that of a pigeon who never seems to shut up, and whose irritating cooing would make you want to go back to bed. By the time I went inside again, the entire ‘bird world’ had come alive, all had burst into song, and it was just the most amazing and delightful cacophony of sound, and something that I will remember for a long time. At the risk of upsetting all those who felt I was gone ‘cuckoo’ last September when I told you all that I had heard the distinctive sound of the migratory bird, I am convinced that in the midst of all the other voices I once again heard the sound of the cuckoo. I’m certain, this time. Mind you, I haven’t heard it since, but I’m sure I will.

Wishing Michael a happy and healthy retirement Finally for this week, last Friday, 8th of May, after 40 years’ dedicated service to the people of Creggs and its surrounding areas, our local postman, Michael Meeley, retired from An Post. As I write this on Tuesday morning he is (hopefully) celebrating his 66th birthday. Michael arrived in Creggs all those years ago joining up with legends Sean ‘Bags’ Keegan, Bunty Keegan and Tommy Rhatigan, and some years later (as they all retired) he found himself serving the entire area.

Married to Kathleen, they are parents to four children, of whom two (Michelle and Damian) followed Michael into the postal service. Meanwhile, Lorraine lives in Galway, and Maria in Wicklow.

Sadly, due to the coronavirus, there could be no celebrations – either at home or in Creggs – to mark the end of a wonderful career – and for us, the end of an era.

Michael always had a smile on his face and a word for everyone, and he will be sadly missed around here, but hopefully sometime in the near future we will get the chance to have a function to give us all the opportunity to say thanks and goodbye and wish him and his family well for the future. He has been a little unwell for the last few weeks, and was off sick, so he was very disappointed not to get the chance to say goodbye to his many friends. The good news is that he is fully recovered, and as I say, please God some time soon we will all be able to thank him personally.

In the meantime Michael, thanks for all your dedication and commitment over such a long time, enjoy your retirement, mind yourself and Kathleen, and we’ll see you out walking for many years to come.

Recalling Munster magic Last week I wrote that I’d list the top ten sporting moments I’ve seen throughout my life.

Here is number two: Munster winning their first Heineken Cup in Cardiff in 2006, beating Biarritz 23-19. I was lucky enough to be present and will never forget the atmosphere and sheer excitement as the men in red took the title.

The remarkable scenes from O’Connell Street in Limerick were shown live on giant screens in the Millennium Stadium, while more than 40,000 supporters turned out in Limerick for the homecoming. For us who were there the craic was a lot more than ninety. It was a momentous occasion.

Roscommon Gaels supporting Pieta House On Saturday morning at 5.30 am Liam McNeill, Teresa Hession, Brian Kelly and Andy Hession from Roscommon Gaels kick-started the Pieta House Darkness into Light charity fundraiser that was to last until 5.30 pm on Saturday evening.

Members from all Adult Ladies and Mens football, camogie and hurling joined forces (from a social distance) and ran/walked 5km for Pieta House.

Families connected to the club all over the town and surrounding areas did their piece also, sending in clips to keep the team at McNeill’s Store, Abbeytown up to date.

Headed up by Brian Kelly, players met at McNeill’s Store in half hourly slots and began their 5km. Passers-by stopped and donated willingly also and by 5.30 pm, and after the last two runners completed their 5km, there was over €7,000 collected. A GoFundMe Page https://gf.me/u/xzj6t2 has been set up and will close this Friday, when a final figure will be released.

Roscommon Gaels would like to thank all its members who came together, even though we are all apart, to support this worthy cause which has affected so many in our community. We would also like to thank Greg Glancy for supplying fresh fruit for participants and Declan Walsh for supplying music during the afternoon.

TDs call for 0% VAT rate

Sligo-Leitrim TD Frank Feighan says many businesses in Sligo, Leitrim, South Donegal and North Roscommon will not survive if the Government does not introduce a 0% VAT rate for the tourism and hospitality sector at this time of crisis.

Speaking in the Dáil, Deputy Feighan secured the backing of the Minister for State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin for such an initiative.

Deputy Marian Harkin added her support to other members of the Dáil who called for zero rate VAT to be applied in the hospitality sector and hoped that this measure would form part of the Programme for Government.

He/she must be equally capable of working on his/her own initiative and as part of a team.

Initially the role will be for 15 Hours per week but will increase to a full time job as Manager over the following months so applicants will need to be in a position where they can take on more hours.

A big thank you to Dr. Fiona Sweeney and all her staff in the Medical Care Centre. Nurses, Carers and Support staff who all made Maureen’s last few weeks comfortable and cared for her in Roscommon Hospital. To Geraldine in Palliative Care, you did an exceptional job that we will always remember and the extra special moments we got with Maureen in her final moments we will forever cherish. Thank you to David Hynes the pharmacist who was always so kind and helpful.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the grave diggers, for preparing Maureen’s final resting place. To Henry Hamrock, for his care and respectful manner during Maureen’s funeral. Big thanks to Fr. Eugene McLoughlin for his kindness during prayers and beautiful Mass. To Margaret Kiernan, for the soothing music. Massive thanks to Mike, Sharon and all the staff at the Bridge House in Athleague for preparing a gorgeous meal after the Mass.

ended in glory with a Nicky Rackard Cup title and now promotion to a higher level in championship hurling for the first time in over a decade.

Roscommon manager Justin Campbell says the players will regroup in due course and prepare for the higher level of hurling.

Ballinasloe Town achieved a memorable treble when they comprehensively defeated underdogs Ballymoe FC in the Roscommon Challenge Cup Final played in glorious weather conditions in Lecarrow last Sunday afternoon.

Apart from the opening 25 minutes of the contest, the Premier Division champions were the superior outfit. Indeed they played with great composure and conviction once they settled into the game.

Minors book their Connacht semi-final place

Connacht Minor FC Quarter-final: Roscommon 4-15 Leitrim 2-3 The Roscommon minor football team booked their place in the Connacht Championship semi-final with a comprehensive 18-point win over rivals Leitrim in Pairc Sean Mac Duirmuda, Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturday evening last.

It was as emphatic a victory as Roscommon have enjoyed at this level in recent times and sets up an eagerly-awaited semi-final clash against Galway this Saturday evening in Tuam.

Roscommon completely dominated throughout proceedings and with Ultan Harney and Thomas Corcoran lording the always crucial midfield area, they never afforded the opposition any type of a foothold in the game.

Opportunity now forRoscommon hurling to move forward The way the Roscommon hurlers won the Nicky Rackard Cup Final in Croke Park last Saturday was one of the most thrilling pieces of sporting action that we will see this year in any sport.

If Henry Shefflin or Joe Canning scored the goal that Micheal Kelly scored last Saturday in the dying seconds we would be hearing about it for years to come.

It was a sensational strike and it could not have happened to a nicer guy, a man who has been a mighty servant of Roscommon hurling over the years.

The Roscommon hurlers must take this win now and move forward. Everyone knows that the county hurling team has slipped down the ranks over the past decade and a win like this can be the platform to competing at a higher level in the coming years.

On another dramatic afternoon at Dr. Hyde Park a point out of this highly charged and very competitive clash is a very satisfactory outcome.

But it could have been another sensational win for Anthony Cunningham’s men. In the 5th minute of injury-time Roscommon were awarded a 20-metre free. A point would have won the game, but referee Noel Mooney of Cavan consulted with his umpires and as a result of a clash between Ultan Harney and the Tyrone goalkeeper Niall Morgan, the decision was changed, the ball was thrown up, and the final whistle was sounded. A share of the spoils was the outcome.

It was that close, but this was another display from Roscommon to warm the cockles of the heart. The Primrose and Blue scored their entire total of 1-10 from play. They scored seven points on the bounce in the final 15 minutes of the first half and some of those scores were delightful efforts from a variety of players. The half-time lead of 0-10 to 0-4 did not flatter the home side.

Racing finally resumed behind closed doors in Germany last Thursday, with a 12 race card at Hanover and continued in Cologne on Friday with two Group races. Both meetings were run off without incident and racing continued yesterday at Longchamp. The last meeting in Germany was on the 8th of March.

On Thursday, in the blazing sunshine racing staff returned to day-to-day life on the racecourse wearing face masks and maintaining a distance from each other, some of the jockeys even had colourcoded masks to match their hat and silks.

Horan comments suggest inter-county GAA action this year is very unlikely < SEAMUS DUKE

The prospects of any GAA action taking place at club or inter-county level in 2020 are receding after the interview given by the President of the Association John Horan on The Sunday Game last Sunday night.

Mr. Horan said that as long as social distancing rules remain in society, it would be “too great a risk” for GAA clubs, players and members to get back together.

The GAA had announced last week that there would be no inter-county action until October at the earliest, but last Sunday’s interview has cast doubts on whether any action will take place at any level in 2020.

Mr Horan also said that it was extremely unlikely that the 2020 Allianz League would be finished and that a final decision on this year’s inter-county championship would be taken “in due course”.

In addition, the Club Players Association have come out against any early return to action after a survey revealed this week that many of their members are very reluctant to return to action.

I also understand that many referees are against any return to competitive action. Following a series of online meetings over the past two weeks it has emerged that a majority of officials would not be ready to officiate at matches in the short to mid-term.

Roscommon goalkeeper Colm Lavin said that

whatever plans the team management come up with with regard to training is the course of action they will follow. ”Most players – including club players – would be tipping away with a bit of running and gym work. It’s great to be able to get out of the house to do a bit of exercise anyway… to take the mind off other things. With regard to the bigger picture, we will just have to wait and see,” he said.

The Eire Óg clubman was responsible for the ‘Shave or Dye’ fundraiser undertaken by the Roscommon senior panel for Mayo-Roscommon Hospice, which raised €57,165.

He said: “It’s a remarkable figure, especially considering that we were only fundraising for three weeks. I just want to sincerely thank everyone who donated. It shows the calibre of people we have in County Roscommon.

“We thought when we started that €30,000 was an ambitious target…to go so far beyond that was brilliant.

“It’s great to be able to help in some small way with the great work that the Hospice do in the community”.

Racing update It’s unlikely that the two-day race meeting scheduled for Roscommon on June 8th and 9th will be going ahead after the Government announced last Thursday that Irish racing will not be resuming until June 29th. The first meeting of the year at Lenebane was due to be held on Monday of this week, but it has fallen victim to

the cancellation of sporting activity. The HRI (Horse Racing Ireland) will meet the Government this week with a view to exploring the possibility of an earlier resumption, but all the indications are that this will not be sanctioned.

The next scheduled meeting in Roscommon (after June 29th) is Monday, 6th of July.

Golf to resume Club golfers will be able to return to action from this coming Monday, 18th of May, under strict guidelines. Only members will be allowed to play – in groups of three at 14-minute starting intervals – and all tee times must be pre-booked. There will be no competitions, and U-18s must play with an adult. Clubhouses will be closed, except for toilet facilities.

Meanwhile, in Germany!

In soccer, the Bundesliga is the first major European League to return to action, with a full round of games down for decision this weekend (Saturday and Sunday). No firm decision has been taken about any return to soccer action in Ireland or in the UK. Aidan’s invite: Pick your Roscommon All-Star 15!

Racing in France, which suspended since 17th of March, resumed on Monday with cards run off at three tracks at ParisLongchamp, with four Group races, Compiegne and Toulouse.

On Wednesday, French racing began from Longchamp with jump racing at Angers. Today, Thursday, 14th of May, flat racing begins at Lyon in France and Munich in Germany. Saturday’s racing is from Auiteuil and Strasburg, both jump meetings in France and flat racing in Dusseldorf.

British racing’s hopes of recommencing this month were dashed by the Government’s decision that no professional sport will be allowed before the 1st of June last Monday. All events, including sports, which cannot begin any earlier than June 1st will be allowed to take place behind closed doors for broadcast, avoiding the risk of largescale social contact. This will only be permitted if sufficient progress is made in limiting the spread of the virus.

The first meeting of the new racing season in Roscommon was due to take place last Monday at Lenebane but quiet. Our neighbours in Kilbeggan, having already lost a meeting on the 24th of April, lose the second meeting of their season due to be held tomorrow.

Last year’s Galway Plate winner Borice suffered a colic and sadly passed away. Ridden by Luke Dempsey, Gordon Dempsey’s just turned nineyear-old French import beat Black Corton and Snugsborough Benny. His target this year was a return to Ballybrit and he had won three races for the Cullertra stable also winning two hurdle races at Perth and Uttoxeter.

1964: Before the Liston fight…

“Ain’t Liston ugly? He’s too ugly to be the world champ. The world champ should be pretty, like me. I predict that Liston will go at eight to prove that I am great. If he wanna go to heaven, I’ll get him in seven. He’ll be in a worse fix if I cut it six. And if he keeps talkin’ jive, I’ll cut it to five”

1964: After the Liston fight…

“I knew I had him in the first round.

Almighty God was with me. I want everybody to bear witness. I am the greatest! I shook up the world! I’m the greatest thing that ever lived. I don’t have a mark on my face, and I upset Sonny Liston, and I just turned 22-years-old. I must be the greatest.

I showed the world. I talk to God every day.

I shook up the world. I’m the king of the world! I’m pretty! I’m a bad man! I shook up the world! I shook up the world! You must listen to me. I am the greatest! I can’t be beat! I am the greatest! It was no match.

I want the world to know I’m so great that Sonny Liston was not even a match. I don’t have a mark on my face. In the fifth round, I couldn’t see a thing. My face was burning and I whupped him. He couldn’t hurt me.

I’m the prettiest thing that ever lived. I shook up the world!”

– It’s 1964, and Cassius Clay, rank outsider and emerging loudmouth, well…he shakes up the world.

I discovered Muhammad Ali in 1970. It was the ‘two names’ thing that stopped me in my tracks. I was a child, watching a black and white film on our small telly. In those days, the TV reception was prone to being fuzzy.

The rabbit’s ears – the name given to the aerial which stood on top of the telly – had to be humoured. If someone wiggled those ears, it usually restored vision.

That film caught my attention, even as a small child. Because of the ‘two names’ thing. Who was this man? This incredibly brash, trash-talking, pretty (his word) American boxer…it seems Clay and Ali was the same man. And what a man…

What had I missed before 1970? Quite a bit.

Clay was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1942. After winning Olympic Gold in Rome in 1960, he turned professional, and immediately began chasing his destiny. Nobody had ever seen anything like him. He boxed with astonishing speed. He danced in the

ring. He TALKED to and taunted opponents. He promoted his fights with outrageous stunts, and predictions, usually in rhyme, of what round he would win in. Most of the boxing press wanted to see the young upstart’s ass kicked.

Sonny Liston would surely see to that. Liston was a brute. Most heavyweight boxers in those days were big, mean, sullen bruisers. Not into comedy, or poetry. When Clay earned a title fight with Liston – the toughest bruiser of them all – the boxing establishment licked its lips: the Louisville Lip would be licked, and put back in his place.

Instead, Clay truly did shake up the world.

Watch it on Youtube. 1964, Clay v Liston. When the dazed champion refused to leave his corner for the seventh round, the history of boxing changed in those few dramatic seconds.

Realising that his moment of destiny has come, Clay danced in the middle of the ring – even Michael Flatley’s eyes would glaze over at the speed of the footwork – and raised his arms in triumph. Then Clay climbed on to the ropes and addressed the world. “I am the greatest! I shook up the world! I shook up the world!” At 22, he had become the youngest ever World Heavyweight Champion. He could talk like nobody else. And he was pretty!

Shortly after the Liston fight, Clay converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali. He defeated Liston in their return bout, and dispatched all contenders. But when Ali refused to join the army, he was stripped of his title and his boxing license was suspended. Over three years in the wilderness followed. When you consider that he didn’t have a single fight from the age of 26 to 29, it makes his career achievements all the more impressive. He had lost his peak years, yet most observers still consider Ali to be the greatest of them all.

Shortly after I’d discovered Ali, we moved to a country house outside Rooskey. Green fields, rolling hills, fresh air, new friends. Not much sport on our black and white TV. I don’t remember the 1970 World Cup (sorry, Pele). By now I was fascinated with Ali. We all were. Maybe partly because we only got to see these thrilling World Heavyweight Boxing fights every now and again. They were something else! And always (it seemed) at 3 or 4 am in the morning!

Such excitement!

Championship of the WORLD! 15 ROUNDS! Madison Square Gardens! INTRODUCING… in the red corner! Ladies and Gentlemen! These words, these new phrases, were beyond exciting.

In Rooskey, we rose at 2 or 3 am, adjusted the rabbit’s ears, and waited for this unparalleled glamour and drama.

An early highlight of Ali’s comeback from suspension was the first of three epic fights with ‘Smokin’ Joe’ Frazier, an opponent Ali seemed to take particular pleasure in taunting (“Joe Frazier’s so ugly, when he cries, the tears run down the back of his head”). You suspect there was always mutual respect there. Frazier went on to become World Champion, before being destroyed by the fearsome George Foreman. In that 1973 bout, scowling Joe knocked Frazier down six times!

That’s relevant, because Ali v Foreman was coming. This was Nasty George, not the Smiling George of later years. If you’d ask George Foreman for a cookery recipe in those days, you’d want to have a getaway car ready. When Ali, by now aged 31, faced Foreman, hardly anyone gave the challenger a hope of winning.

Some even feared for Ali’s life. Foreman was a monster! What would happen in Zaire, and what would the cost be to Ali’s body, and reputation?

30 October 1974, Zaire ‘Vertigo took George Foreman and revolved him’ ‘Ali hit Foreman with a right and left, then came off the ropes to hit him with a left and a right.

Into this last right hand he put his glove and his foreman again, a head-stupefying punch that sent Foreman reeling forward. As he went by, Ali hit him on the side of the jaw with a right, and darted away from the ropes in such a way as to put Foreman next to them. For the first time in the entire fight he had cut off the ring on Foreman. Now Ali struck him a combination of punches fast as the punches of the first round, but harder and more consecutive…and for an instant on Foreman’s face appeared the knowledge that he was in danger and must start to look for his last protection. His opponent was attacking, and there were no ropes behind the opponent. What a dislocation: the axes of his

existence were reversed! He was the man on the ropes! Then a big projectile exactly the size of fist in a glove drove into the middle of Foreman’s mind, the best punch of the startled night, the blow Ali saved for a career.

Foreman’s arms flew out to the side like a man with a parachute jumping out of a plane, and in this doubled-over position he tried to wander out to the centre of the ring. All the while his eyes were on Ali and he looked up with no anger as if Ali, indeed, was the man he knew best in the world and would see him on his dying day. Vertigo took George Foreman and revolved him. Still bowing from the waist in this uncomprehending position, eyes on Muhammad Ali all the way, he started to tumble and his body was seeking the ground.

He went over like a six-foot sixty-year-old butler who has just heard tragic news, yes… down came the Champion in sections and Ali revolved with him in a close circle, hand primed to hit him one more time, and never the need, a wholly intimate escort to the floor.

The referee took Ali to a corner. He stood there, he seemed lost in thought. Now he raced his feet in a quick but restrained shuffle as if to apologise for never asking his legs to dance, and looked on while Foreman tried to rouse himself. Like a drunk hoping to get out of bed to go to work, Foreman rolled over…’

– From ‘The Fight’ by Norman Mailer Ali’s extraordinary victory over Foreman in ‘The Rumble in the Jungle’ was just one of many great performances during a long career marked by superb mastery of the ring, astonishing tactical astuteness, incredible speed at his peak, usually hilarious (occasionally cruel) showmanship, and maybe his greatest asset…courage. Having stunned Foreman and the boxing world (again), Ali was World Champion for a second time. He went on to become the first man in history to win the title three times, defeating Leon Spinks in a return bout in 1978, after losing to Spinks earlier that year. Immortality.

Decline came. He went on too long, fizzling out sadly, against Larry Holmes. Ali died in 2016, his place secure as the greatest sportsman of the 20th century, perhaps of all time.

Was he the greatest heavyweight ever?

There are other contenders, but most people rank Ali at No. 1. He was, as he always reminded us, The Greatest. Ali’s was the most recognised face on the planet. He transcended sport. He was important in racial and cultural contexts, as well as being a phenomenal sports champion, and an extraordinary entertainer.

I don’t have space here to do Ali justice. He floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee.

He was so good, he boasted, that he “handcuffed lightning, threw thunder in jail and made medicine sick”. It was a privilege to live through most of his era. He shook up the world. He shook up the world! The greatest hero of them all!
