Hundreds of businesses in the region reopened their doors to the public this week as the local economy takes a welcome, if tentative, step forward.

This very positive development comes after the Government eased Covid-19-related restrictions, clearing the way for the speeding up of the phased ‘reopening of Ireland’.

Now, local SMEs are taking the plunge and reopening their doors.

The Roscommon People is today appealing to our 80,000 plus readers across Roscommon and adjoining counties to

shop local and to focus all spending in our towns and villages.

Local businesses have incurred significant costs as they adapt their premises’ and practices to meet Covid-19-related guidelines. Just two more Covid cases in county in past week There have been just two further confirmed Covid-19 cases in County Roscommon in the last week, with the total figure for the county now standing at 338. Last night (Wednesday) the Health Protection Surveillance Centre Roscommon-Galway (HPSC) said it hadConstituency been informed that a total of five people with Covid-19 have died in the previous 24 hours. There have now been a total of 1,695 Covid-19-related deaths in Ireland. As of midnight on Tuesday, 9th of June the HPSC had been notified of 19 further confirmed cases of Covid-19. There is now a total of 25,231 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland. The HSE is working to identify any contacts the patients may have had to provide them with information and advice to prevent further spread.

My partner sadly passed away a few months ago. We were together for four years. Neither of us had children and he made a will before his death leaving everything he had to me. I now understand that I may have a very large tax bill. Is this correct?

A person is entitled to receive a gift or inheritance up to a certain value without being liable for inheritance tax which is also known as Capital Acquisition Tax. The amount of tax payable depends on the amount of the gift or inheritance and the relationship between the parties. For tax purposes the relationships are categorised into three different groups namely Group A, B and C. Group A applies where the beneficiary i.e. the person receiving the gift or inheritance is a child of the person giving that gift or inheritance (disponer). This includes a stepchild and an adopted child. It may also include a parent, foster child, and a favourite niece or nephew in certain limited circumstances.

Group B applies where the beneficiary is a grandparent, grandchild, great-grandchild, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, nephew or niece of the disponer. A parent who does not qualify under Group A will fall into Group B. Group C applies to any relationship not included in Group A or Group B. The amount that can be received tax free is known as the threshold. The current threshold for Group A is €335,000, Group B is €32,500 and Group C is €16,250. A gift or inheritance up to the threshold amount does not attract Capital Acquisition Tax. A gift or inheritance above the threshold amount will attract tax of 33% on that amount in excess of the threshold.

If you receive a gift or inheritance from your spouse or civil partner, you are exempt from Capital Acquisitions Tax. Unfortunately, the same exemption does not apply to partners who are not married or who have not entered a civil partnership. Regretfully, in your situation you may only inherit up to €16,250 from your partner tax-free. The remainder will be taxed at 33%.

He wasn’t doing a weather forecast!

It was so strange, having nobody call to the house…

Nobody calling? You’re joking! One minute it was a food delivery, the next it was something one of the kids had bought online…there were so many delivery men calling, I nearly had to employ a traffic attendant!

Yeah, we’ve seen some changes. And now, we’re entering the new normal… however it will be.

We’ll adapt. Hopefully we’ll have the best of all: a bit of the new normal, and a good bit of the old normal!

At least the GAA launched their road map…did you read it?

No! It’s too long. I just skipped on to the end! Hopefully we’ll see the Rossies back in action in October!

With the help of God…and Croke Park!

Anyways, I’d better move on, I’ve ordered a takeaway! Great to see you! And remember, a new day will come!

Okay…what’s it on? Government formation? The return of GAA? The new normal?

Eh…do you really think there’ll be no barstools?

It was very encouraging to see a large number of businesses in County Roscommon reopening on Monday following the easing of Covid-19-related restrictions by the Government. We encourage local people to support our SMES more than ever, and to please adhere to social distancing guidelines while doing so.

And we wish our colleagues in the SME sector every good wish at this very challenging time!

Last week we reported on illegal dumping and some ‘unsocial activity’ at Portrunny; it has since emerged that some people enjoying the good weather at the fabulous Lough Key Forest Park also left a trail of litter behind. A diary of the times that are (part 13) Friday Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has surprised many of us by announcing an easing of Covid-19 restrictions, a speeding up of the reopening of Ireland.

Most people are welcoming the news, while many others feel we’re moving too fast, that we should be remaining in lockdown until this damn virus is crushed. Difficult not to add these three (not particularly helpful) words…time will tell.

Saturday Coming soon…10 things to look forward to…(NOT in order) 1: Booking a hotel break.

Anywhere in the world, as long as it’s the West of Ireland.

2: Grandchildren meeting grandparents in the flesh…this separation of loved ones has been such a cruel consequence of the coronavirus.

3: Bringing our son to a sports pitch and watching his reaction when he sees his friends.

4: ‘Losing’ an afternoon in one of our great cafes in Roscommon…drinking several coffees while talking at length about nothing much.

5: People being able to gather (albeit in small numbers) for ceremonies in our local Churches. This recent, lamentable loss of connection with our places of worship has reminded us of the peace and calmness often experienced in sacred places. It has been missed.

6: Meeting people…say what you like about people, but

there’s a lot to be said for the ould bit of interaction with them!

7: Going into a pub that serves food, scanning the food menu, and casually nodding when/if the waiter/waitresses asks if we’d like a drink while deciding what to order. And, when July 20th (not that we’ve noted the date) comes, the glorious option of a trip to the local pub, whether we’re hungry or not (and whether they serve food or not). Okay, let’s say it straight out: REALLY looking forward to a pint (even with social distancing).

Any idea what we might talk about?

8: Eating lunch out…we like collecting the food (and this service will grow in popularity), we’re even okay with cooking it at home (in the centuries-old tradition), but boy do we miss popping into any of Roscommon’s hotels/restaurants for a tasty lunch and a friendly hello (hurried or otherwise) to familiar faces.

9: The option of a trip to the cinema, or Roscommon Arts Centre/other such facilities.

10: The return of sports’ activity countywide and nationally. That return has started with the golf and horse racing; with GAA, soccer, rugby and so much more to follow.

Such joys are a while off, and we may have many of these sports without spectators for some time, but we’re looking forward to the ball(s) rolling again. Most of all, we want normality; to coin a phrase, we’re normal people…

Sunday On RTE, ‘The Sunday Game’ trundles along, gamely trying to fill the void in the lives of GAA fans.

Des & Co. are doing a good job, but I can’t bear to watch the entire programme. I’m really not that interested in extended highlights

of old matches, followed by panel discussions on same.

The approach taken by the Match of the Day guys on BBC is better, and, I imagine, spectacularly low budget: Gary Lineker, Ian Wright and Alan Shearer in a joint podcast (from their respective homes), where they do a ‘Top 10’ every Saturday night. I wasn’t sure about it when the series started, but it’s proven to be entertaining, with the former players in relaxed mode, and sharing some very amusing insights for their careers.

The Sunday Game has, in fairness, been good, but it’s hard to stick with up to two hours of it! I dipped in and out last Sunday night, and certainly the interview with Davy Fitzgerald was enjoyable.

His passion and honesty – and divilment – makes him one of the great GAA characters of our time.

Meanwhile, earlier on Sunday I watched part of Channel 4’s screening of – wait for it – the 1966 World Cup final. This was actually very interesting. It was the first time I’d seen any of the game (bar the iconic goals). It was surprising how similar the approach play and style was to the football of modern times!

This screening, presented by Gabby Logan, was a Covid-19related fundraiser. Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat-trick as England defeated West Germany 4-2, was present to give his insights.

It was a marathon programme, the fascinating action frequently interrupted by Gabby gabbing to guests. By 4 pm, I thought it was all over. Next thing, Geoff scored his third, a right screamer.

I definitely thought it was all over then – and it was.

Monday-Tuesday Our exclusive story on the ancient

boat found in a lake by 12-year-old Lisacul youth Cathal McDonagh grabbed headlines around the world!

Our report on Cathal’s exciting discovery was picked up by local, national and international media.

Cathal was paddling in a lake near his home when he found the ancient log boat, which is thought to be thousands of years old.

Our story was featured on RTE Radio on Tuesday morning, and across various media platforms worldwide. Word also that it was the most read story on the US-based ‘Irish news’ website, IrishCentral.com on Tuesday.

It goes to show that the ‘traditional media’ can break stories!

Meanwhile, there’s been a great reaction to our series on the writings of the late George N. Geraghty. ‘Roscommon as it was’ is a series of memories of Roscommon town and environs, mostly from the early years of the 20th century, penned by Abbey Street resident George, who died in 1953. These articles have really struck a chord with our readers.

With the pandemic, etc. we haven’t quite got into a regular schedule yet in terms of when we publish these memories, but we’ll run another ‘Roscommon as it was’ column next week!

Pop-Up Poetry – as part of Cruinniú na nÓg

Jim’s on song… with memories of home

‘Pop-Up Poetry for Lil’ Peeps’ is a new multi-platform poetry project presented

by Branar Téatar do Pháistí for children aged up to six years old. Produced in association with Children’s Books Ireland & Poetry Ireland, and supported by Roscommon County Council, Branar have commissioned Irish writers and artists to create new poems and nursery rhymes in Irish and English.

This world premiere project will be presented as part of the national Cruinniú na nÓg 2020 programme and will feature beautiful illustrations by Niamh Sharkey. Young people and family audiences across Ireland can enjoy this work online through vivid audio recordings and new animations by artist Maeve Clancy via the Branar website from Saturday, 13th of June.

Creative Producer, Joanne Beirne, originally from Roscommon town, explains: “This is the first project that Branar has created entirely virtually. All of the artists and Branar team members creating this project have done so remotely since March from their homes in six counties across Ireland from Antrim to Clare, Galat the ‘Ballagh Brats’ Reunion in Durkin’s a few years ago were, left to right: Jim way to Wicklow. The animations for this unique project will be screened on RTÉ Junior as part of the Cruinniú na nÓg programming on Saturday, 13th of June.

Cruinniú na nÓg is Ireland’s national day of free creativity for children and young people.

Tibohine native Jim Sharkey, now based in the USA, has been busy writing songs about his native place – with Global Rossie Day in mind. Global Rossie Day 2020 is on Sunday, 21st of June.

Obviously with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, there will be quite a virtual/social media element to this year’s celebrations.

Stateside, Jim (known to his friends in Ballaghaderreen as Bernie) has been busy… writing and performing songs!

One such number which we’ve been made aware of is ‘The Bar on the Square’, accompanied online by an evocative video of people and places from Ballaghaderreen. This song takes on a new significance this month, with the sad news that Durkin’s (the premises in question) is closing.

Jim posted online: “This song is about Durkin’s Bar and Restaurant in my home town of Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon…Ballaghaderreen photographer Michael McCormack kindly allowed me to use most of the photographs used in the video. Peter Byrne (a Mayo man!) who I met in Charlotte, North Carolina and quickly became friends with three or four years ago, supplied the last photo.

He took it when he went to visit Ballaghaderreen around 2018”.

Well done Jim (Bernie) on a lovely song…which will no doubt revive fond memories for many of our Ballaghaderreen readers!

‘Worlds Apart’ – Ronan’s book details his ‘alternative journey’ < DAN DOONER

Ballintubber woman, Fiona Sirr, who started posting music videos on social media during flooding in the area earlier this year, has earned a worldwide following on Facebook and YouTube during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Videos on the Fiona Sirr Music page on Facebook have received over 545,000 views from over 100 countries around the world. Fiona said she is still coming to terms with her new-found fame.

“I just can’t get my head around it, it’s mad really. To think that this all started as a bit of craic during the flooding in Ballintubber earlier this year and now it’s reaching so many people around the world, and I’ve even brought out a DVD! I’m delighted that the videos are so popular and hopefully they’re providing a few smiles,” she told the Roscommon People.

Former Roscommon footballer, Ronan Brady from Elphin, has released a memoir entitled ‘Worlds Apart – An Alternative Journey to Becoming a Modern Man’, which details his decision to leave football and his career as a teacher behind in order to pursue a career as a contemporary circus performer.

Ronan (32) has since become internationally recognised within the circus world, particularly for his expertise in the Cyr Wheel. His memoir follows his journey so far, from growing up in Roscommon to his life as a circus performer.

Speaking to the Roscommon People this week, Ronan said that he decided to take the path less travelled while recovering from an injury he sustained playing football.

“I was all about football and I grew up designing my life around football.

I decided in secondary school that I would go to college to become a teacher so I could travel home for the summer to be a county footballer.

“I picked up an injury which forced me to take a year out, and during that time I got into some circus training to build my fitness up. It was only when I moved away from football for a while that I realised I didn’t really miss it that much. I played it because I was good at it and received positive feedback for it so it had become something I just did. I made the choice there and then to do some-

thing I really enjoyed and to move into contemporary circus. It was a strange choice but it turned out to be the correct one,” he said.

The Cyr Wheel has transformed Ronan’s life, taking him all over the world as part of the smash hit show ‘Riot’ alongside Panti Bliss. He has also returned home to perform in the Roscommon Arts Centre and even made an appearance at half-time during the 2017 Connacht senior football semi-final between Roscommon and Leitrim at Dr. Hyde Park.

“Touring the world with ‘Riot’ introduced me to a different culture and meeting people like the wonderful Panti Bliss really opened my eyes.

She taught me so many things about art and culture and diversity and how to be a better person.

“There was a certain level of conservatism and traditionalism in me growing up and while there are a number of positive things that go with that, there were also negative traits, biases and judgements, which aren’t so nice.

“The book details two very different worlds, the first being my life as a secondary school teacher and footballer and the second is the world of the arts sector and the arts lifestyle.

The two seem so far apart and foreign to each other but it would be wonderful if they were closer together.

“I’d describe the book as an account of leaving one life for another. Sometimes we make decisions about life and we’re never really told we can

change our minds. My story shows that it’s okay to pivot or to go in a different direction in life,” he said.

Ronan’s memoir shows commendable self-awareness and contains some hard truths, such as his admission that as a child he could be a bully. It also recounts some of the difficulties he has experienced, including unwanted advances from both sexes, and dealing with people assuming that he was gay.

‘Worlds Apart’ is an incredibly honest and humorous account of Ronan’s journey from insulated country life to the crazy world of performing arts.

Published by Mercier Press, it is currently available as an eBook on Amazon and Audible. The print version will be available in July, priced at €14.99.

Phase 2 of the Return to Golf Protocols commenced this week, and at Roscommon Golf Club, large numbers of existing and new members again took to the fairways, many of whom were enjoying their first game in a number of months with the introduction of the 20k travel limit.

The Golf Club were also hoping to start club competitions for members but unfortunately were advised by GUI/ILGU at the weekend that golf clubs are now not permitted to hold competitions in Phase 2. While this was disappointing to hear on a number of fronts, it gives members an opportunity to become familiar with new contactless payment and electronic scorecard; the BRS Purse and Handicap Master Scorecard, which will be in place when competitions are resumed. Fourballs are also allowed in this phase and the putting green has also been reopened again under strict social distance guidelines.

Many junior members have been back on the course under the supervision of an adult as required and the Committees and Junior Convenors are continuing to study the Re-Introduction of Junior Activity in the Club Protocols and will advise on the junior programme as Phase 2 progresses.

However, due to the accelerated lifting of lockdown restrictions currently being phased out across Ireland, I’m confident that even if we’re still experiencing a series of major lifestyle changes, fingers crossed, families will be able to hug each other before the month is out!

Mind you, in order to contain and control this horrible virus, every single one of us has a civic duty to make every concerted effort to do what we can to keep both ourselves and each other safe. To be specific, respect and obey the enforced social distancing and reduced capacity guidelines when we’re out and about visiting shops, parks, and other facilities, etc. While Roscommon’s on the road to recovery, we are still enmeshed in a very serious health crisis, one that stretches right across society.

Shop LOCAL Eat LOCAL Spend LOCAL Enjoy LOCAL For that reason, in order to contain and control this horrible virus, and curb its flow, can I ask you all to please support each other when and where you can; this includes showing solidarity with, and loyalty towards, local businesses. As you know, since last Monday, retail outlets across Roscommon lucky enough to have their own on-street entrances were able to open their doors again (many showcasing their summer sales)! However, shopping centres can’t re-open until next Monday.

With this in mind readers, in order to try and kick-start the economy again in Roscommon, can I please ask you to make

sure to shop local and support that small business which remained open when you needed them most. That local family-run supermarket where they bent over backwards to keep shelves stocked, and pivoted this way and that in an effort to serve you without making any human contact. That local pharmacy that transitioned, often with great difficulty, in order to make sure you had your essential medical supplies. That takeaway/restaurant/coffee shop which diversified in order to offer you contactless goodies, delivered to your door. We’ve all been hit hard by these uncertain times; some of us have lost jobs, some of us have lost our businesses and our livelihoods; and tragically and heartbreakingly, some of us have lost beloved family members and friends. Let’s show each other solidarity by coming together and showing our commitment to our communities. I’m not asking you to stand on your doorsteps or balconies to take part in a spontaneous flash mob performance, (you can if you wish), I’m simply asking you to pop into your local hardware/supermarket/ chemist/takeaway/farmers’ market etc., in an effort to keep our communities, our families and our businesses safe and sustainable. May all who lost their lives during Covid rest in peace.

Ooops! I think he did it again!

Olé, olé, olé! Anyone else burst into our (unofficial) national anthem when they heard Leo was ready to unlock the country? Mind you, I did stop mid-song when, squaring his shoulders and graduating to full martyr mode, our acting Taoiseach delivered his closing words of ‘hope’ which, strangely enough, didn’t dramatically shift my mindset or make me feel in any way reassured. Rather, I heard myself releasing one of my melodramatic sighs.

And why? Because, instead of creating, developing and delivering something original – something inspirational from his own head – our Leo once again used a reference borrowed from a popular book/movie…or both! This time, he purloined a line from a Lord of the Rings fantasy novel, saying ‘In the end, it’s only a passing thing this shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines, it’ll shine out the clearer’.

I mean folks, I was still getting over his use of the movie Terminator 2, Judgement Day line delivered by character Kyle Reese to Sarah Connor when he said, ‘There is no fate but what we make for ourselves’. And don’t get me started on his Churchill quote, (pitched in March), when he said ‘Never has so much been asked by so many of so few…’ Seriously, what’s next Leo…‘nobody puts baby in a corner’?

Ah sure look at it this way, if we could harness Leo’s ingenuity, his originality, that brilliant mind of his, (and I suppose his speechwriter’s), and turn it all into money, the country’s financial problems would be over for the rest of eternity…not!

George Floyd, RIP

Josepha’s hypocrisy What happened to George Floyd in the US was horrendous. However, what happened to that poor child in Carrigaline, Cork last weekend was also horrendous. Both were victims of (alleged) racially motivated attacks.

Now while there’s nothing wrong with Minister for Culture and Heritage Josepha Madigan wanting to show “our abhorrence and rejection of (racism),” by holding a ‘minute’s silence’ in the Dáil in memory of George Floyd, I wonder if she’ll show similar outrage regarding the incident in Cork? I hope the victim makes a full recovery.

I find there’s something strangely hypocritical about a woman who pushed through a campaign to block authorities in her upmarket Mount Merrion neighbourhood from purchasing a bit of land to build housing for Irish Travellers.

Close to her home. Yet she shows a steely unrepentant rejection of serious aspects of racism in the US. Far from home! Then again, perhaps Josepha’s just doing what I think she does best… attention-seeking! That’s right Josepha, fix the halo, bow the head, and stand in silence, publicity goal photo op box ticked, objective achieved!

Harkin pushing case for facemasks Marian Harkin TD has again called on An Taoiseach to strongly recommend the wearing of facemasks, especially on public transport and at indoor public venues as part of a containment strategy for Covid-19.

She said: “Recently, I asked the Taoiseach to follow the example of other countries and have facemasks distributed free to citizens and also if he would

consider their distribution on public transport.

“If the wearing of facemasks on public transport was mandatory, then perhaps we could look at the two-metre social distancing requirement which severely limits numbers travelling and makes it unviable for transport operators to continue or restart their business”, Marian Harkin stated.

She added: “The recent statement from the WHO provides even further evidence that mask wearing is a valuable addition to the measures that are currently in place to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

“For the foreseeable future, we will have to live with the coronavirus, and we need a suite of measures to slow and stop its spread”.

€120k boost for historic buildings – Naughten

The Government has allocated €120,000 for works to maintain and repair eighteen historic buildings across Roscommon and East Galway, Denis Naughten TD has confirmed.

“Not only will this funding help to maintain these important historic buildings across our area, but it will also support employment as many of these small-scale projects are labourintensive projects to repair and safeguard our built heritage.

“Many are supported by local voluntary heritage groups and this investment is an acknowledgement of the work of such groups. Other projects support the maintenance of private properties that have been maintained by local families which add to the history of our local areas and for the generations to come,” concluded Denis Naughten.

NewsPeople Murphy’s tribute at death of Fr Martin Mulvaney to popular priest Shock Fr. Martin Mulvaney, who died suddenly at Mulvaney’s sisters and brothers, to his parishSenator Eugene Murphy has paid tribute to the late Fr. Martin Mulvaney. Senator Murphy said there is widespread heartbreak and a very deep sense of loss in Rooskey and throughout Kilglass Parish.

“There are so many people who valued his friendship and company. I became a good friend of Fr. Martin’s almost 20 years ago. His love of sport was well known. Horse racing, football, golf and other sports always generated conversation when you chatted with him. Now and again the topic would become part of his very interesting Sunday ceremonies.

“Fr. Martin always had great crowds at his weekend Masses. Young and old very much looked forward to attending Mass when he was the celebrant.

“This very jovial character with a word for everyone has left a lasting impression with the many people he came in contact with”.

Extending his sympathies to Fr. Mulvaney’s family, Senator Murphy said that he wanted them to know that the joy and support Fr. Martin brought to so many people will not be forgotten. Senator Murphy also extended his sympathies to Bishop Doran and the priests of the Diocese of Elphin.

Parishioners were devastated and deeply upset when news emerged on Monday morning that Fr. Mulvaney had died.

In a tribute, the Diocese of Elphin noted that Fr. Mulvaney was a daily walker and fitness enthusiast who was “a relatively young 65 years of age”.

In a statement, Bishop Doran said: “Fr. Mulvaney enjoyed meeting people and sharing their company, whether it be in their family homes around the parish, on his daily walk, on the golf course, at the game of cards, on or off the GAA field (as player, manager, or spectator), or on his occasional trips to the races”.

Following his education at Summerhill College, Sligo, Martin Mulvaney went to St. Patrick’s College, Kiltegan, for the Spiritual Year from 1973 to 1974, and from there to St. Patrick’s College, Douglas, Cork for his philosophy studies. In 1976, he moved to St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth for his final four years of formation.

Having completed his studies in theology, he was ordained to the priesthood on 15th June 1980 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Sligo.

Fr. Martin’s ministry extended throughout the length and breadth of Co. Roscommon, beginning with a temporary appointment in Strokestown. During his forty years as a priest, he served in Breedogue, Kilmurray, Elphin, Roscommon Town, Croghan, and Athlone, before his most recent appointment to Rooskey, in August 2018.

Funeral arrangements were not available as we went to press. May he rest in peace.

2020 Loughglynn Music Festival cancelled

The 2020 Loughglynn Music Festival has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The popular event was scheduled to be held over the August Bank Holiday weekend, but organisers have decided to cancel this year’s event due to the restrictions, and with public health in mind. A spokesperson thanked the public for their support and understanding and said the organisers look forward to next year’s Loughglynn Music Festival.

HSE Health Promotion and Improvement has funded the Men’s Health Forum in Ireland (MHFI) to coordinate International Men’s Health Week (MHW) 2020 in Ireland. This runs from Monday, 15th of June until Sunday, 21st of June (Father’s Day).

This year the theme is: ‘Restoring the Balance, Be part of the solution’. All aspects of life in Ireland continue to be shaped by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. It has had a major impact on men’s health.

This annual week aims to raise awareness of preventable health problems; encourage the early detection and treatment of health conditions in men; and support men and boys to engage in healthier lifestyle choices/activities.

NewsPeople Playgrounds to reopen – McDermott Cllr. Marty McDermott says that playgrounds in County Roscommon are set to reopen in the coming days, once the relevant Covid-19-related signage is in place.

Cllr. McDermott, who has been liaising with the authorities on the issue, said that there had been some confusion in relation to guidelines, but he was satisfied that these had now been addressed.

He said that there are approximately 20 public playgrounds in County Roscommon and that these facilities are now set to reopen. The onus will be on parents/guardians to supervise children and ensure that social distancing and other guidelines are being adhered to (e.g. hand sanitising before, during and after equipment is touched, etc).

Cllr. McDermott said that Roscommon County Council is putting the relevant signage in place.

“I am delighted that clarity has been provided and that these playgrounds can reopen. It is so important that we see children out and about enjoying themselves again.

At the same time, I would urge parents and guardians to please be vigilant and ensure guidelines are followed so that we can all help to defeat this virus”.

In a press statement issued earlier this week, the Fianna Fáil councillor said there has been a very positive response to the Business Restart Grant scheme, which he encouraged people to sign up to.

Meanwhile, he is supporting calls from the SME sector for the current two-metre social distancing requirement to be relaxed.

“It’s great to see businesses reopening. Now we need to support them. So I would appeal to people to shop locally at all times. I also think it is important that the two-metre distance is reduced. The only way that many small businesses are going to have a chance of being financially viable is if this distance is reduced to one metre”.

9 YEARS AGO Local finalists in First Lego League Robotics Challenge Students in Roscommon Community College are now finalising their entries for this year’s FIRST LEGO League Robotics Challenge. The team from Roscommon will join 25 others from all around the country for the national final, which will be held in the Radisson Hotel, Galway on Saturday, January 8th.

Now in its fourth year in Ireland, the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League Robotics Challenge is open to 9 to 16 year-olds who are required to work together to design, build and programme robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology.

This year’s overall winning team will go on to compete in the UK and Ireland finals which take place in Loughborough University in Leicestershire.

County’s population is now 63,898!

Preliminary figures for the 2011 Census reveals that the population of Roscommon rose by 8.7% on the 2006 figure. There are now 63,898 people living in the county, which is up from 58,796 in 2006.

In 2011 there were 32,370 males and 32,900 females living in the county. The population of Connacht is also up, by 7.5%. In 2011 there are 542,039 people living in Connacht – up from 504,121 in 2006.

The 18th Lough Rynn Harvest Festival & Vintage takes place on Sunday, September 2nd and is returning to its spiritual home of Lough Rynn Castle Estate & Gardens. The annual festival, which is organised by Bornacoola Development Association, was officially launched recently along with the programme of activities for the festival.

Vintage enthusiasts, crafts lovers and country music fans all have something to look forward to this September 2nd. The annual vintage display will feature cars, motorbikes and agricultural machinery, while there will also be a threshing display, as well as a series

5 YEARS AGO Loughnaneane Park in running for major accolade < EOGHAN YOUNG-MURPHY

Loughnaneane Park in Roscommon town is in the running for a major accolade this weekend.

It is one of ten nominations in the ‘best public park’ category for the LAMA Community and Council Awards, which will be announced at the Gala Awards Ceremony at the Crone Plaza Hotel, Northwood, Dublin, on Saturday.

The park – only a few minutes’ away from the hustle and bustle of Roscommon town – has been warmly praised by judges in the Tidy Towns competition and, more recently, by adjudicators from Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL).

Granting the location their top ranking of ‘grade A’, they added: “This wonderful site has consistently been a top ranking site.

3 YEARS AGO Relaunch of Heritage Barge in Ballyleague on Saturday A major maritime historical event will take place this Saturday, 18th of March at 2 pm in Ballyleague, when an 80-year-old steel Barge will be relaunched by Christy McCann, Chief Scout, and Dawn Livingstone, CEO of Waterways Ireland.

Back in 1937, Thos Hughes from Athy, Co. Kildare purchased a 62-foot Barge from William McMillen of the Ringsend Dockyard Company, stated to have cost £1,175 pounds. The 113B worked on the Barrow line and on the Grand Canal carrying mixed cargo, and was subsequently bought by the OPW and used as a maintenance boat on the Shannon in the early 1950s to replace the original ‘Fox’, which the late Sid Shine (from Athlone) had bought.

The 113B was renamed the Fox and plied its trade on behalf of a number of Government agencies throughout the years, maintaining the waterways from Lanesborough up to Lough Allen and further afield until it was decommissioned a number of years ago.

Following negotiations with Waterways Ireland, the 12th Roscommon Scout Troop (part of Lough Keel Scout County) took possession of the 113B Fox under a licence agreement just under three years ago.

The Barge was brought up to Hanly’s Marina in Ballyleague where a major restoration and refurbishing programme was undertaken by a dedicated team of Scout Leaders which will culminate in its relaunch for use by the Scouting movement.

From Paul Healy’s column When Tony Keady was in his prime, there were no iPods or primadonnas. I am glad to have seen Keady in action, in the flesh. He was a warriorlike presence at the heart of the defence in the double All-Ireland winning Galway hurling team.

In 1987 and ’88 it was a hair-raising experience to watch from ‘The Hogan’ as that swashbuckling Galway half-back line drove the men from the west on to All-Ireland glory. All that Gerry McInerney was missing was a Zorro-like cape.

These were great men, chieftains, truly leaders of their tribe. In sport, it was a more innocent time than now. Keady was a true sporting hero. Unlike most of the soccer superstars, he was accessible too, of his place and of his people. It is so sad that this devoted family man and sporting great has been called so early.

Passengers will also have to complete a form showing where they will self-isolate.

All reopening measures require that appropriate social distancing, hygiene and other sector-specific public health measures be in place.

Kerrane presses Bruton on Bord na Móna issues Sinn Féin TD for Roscommon/Galway Claire Kerrane had told the Dáil that seasonal workers at Bord na Móna need to be treated equally.

Raising issues affecting the workers directly with Minister Richard Bruton, Deputy Kerrane said: “At the end of April, Bord na Móna let between 190-230 workers go due to the impact of Covid-19 on their business.

“At that time some workers were put on the Wage Subsidy Scheme, while the majority of seasonal and contract workers were left with nothing.

“These workers got a couple of days’ notice that their jobs were gone and so too was their income. In a very selective way Bord na Móna decided who would remain on, who would be let go, who would have their income secured and who would receive letters telling them that they might be eligible for the Pandemic Unemployment Payment. This was a disgraceful way for Bord na Móna to treat their workers.

“In a similar and selective way Bord na Móna are offering alternatives job opportunities to some employees.

Some of these jobs are in Dublin,

miles away from home.

“These job opportunities need to be made available to as many employees as possible and they need to be created locally rather than pushing more and more people into Dublin.

We also need clarity on the redundancy package in place”.

Deputy Kerrane added: “The first report on a Just Transition by Kieran Mulvey includes a recommendation that the Midlands becomes an energy hub. This is very welcome. We have to get this transition right for workers, families and entire communities who are depending on this”.

Nursing home staff to be re-tested – Naughten

Health Minister Simon Harris has confirmed that all nursing home staff will be re-tested weekly for the next month. Local TD Denis Naughten said that Minister Harris was responding to a request that he had made on this issue.

“Three weeks ago, Minister Harris agreed with me that retesting needed to be carried out in nursing homes and he has now confirmed that the National Public Health Emergency Team has agreed to re-test all staff weekly for the next four weeks,” said

Denis Naughten.

Deputy Naughten again highlighted ongoing delays in the original testing of nursing home staff, which he said poses “an unacceptable risk” to residents.

“I again pointed out to Minister Harris the reason why I’m so concerned by this failure to re-test is because the time delay between testing and results is undermining the credibility of the screening programme,” he said.

“In one instance that I’m aware of, a frontline nursing home staff

member had to wait 13 days for an asymptomatic positive result, during which time they were still working in the nursing home.

“I told Minister Harris that this person worked in a large nursing home in the east of the country yet, amazingly, the HSE had no plan to re-test the residents or employees of the nursing home in question”.

Deputy Naughten said he welcomes the re-testing move and hopes it will provide further protection to the long-term residents of nursing homes.

New e-mental health hub opens Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has welcomed the new e-mental health hub which was launched in Castlerea this week, but he has raised concerns over staffing levels for the centre.

The new e-mental health hub aims to provide psychiatric help to young people and it also aims to ensure that older people with mental health issues can remain in their own homes for as long as possible.

“The e-hub is located on the site of the former Rosalie Unit in Castlerea and essentially it will be a CAMHS Connect service which involves all the CAMHS services in the West and naturally this is a most welcome move

but I would issue a word of caution over staffing levels,” said Senator Murphy.

“I understand that four staff are being recruited at the moment for this new e-mental health hub but I have been informed that in the region of twenty to thirty staff will be needed to fully staff this centre. We need clarification on the recruitment of staff and how long it will take to have the centre working at full capacity.

Crosby welcomes new approach Cllr. Tom Crosby said he welcomed the in-

novative new approach to mental health care – known as CAMHS Connect – which will form the core of the new Castlerea e-mental health hub.

Cllr. Crosby said that the unique initiative is “the first of its kind in Ireland”.

He described it as “a major and exciting project which aims to fully modernise mental health care nationally by incorporating pilot tele-psychiatry projects by the HSE across different mental health care settings such as adult services, Addiction and Substance Abuse care, GPs and Primary Care and Mental Health Intellectual Disability”.

Kerrane seeks report on Castlerea Fire Station

Sinn Féin TD for Roscommon/Galway Claire Kerrane has asked the CEO of Roscommon County Council to share the report into Castlerea Fire Station with all elected representatives rather than waiting for the July Council meeting.

Speaking having written to the CEO of Roscommon County Council, Deputy Kerrane said: “We should not have to wait until the end of July for the report on Castlerea Fire Station, which will ultimately determine its future.

“This report should be made available to the elected representatives in the county, including TDs, now.

“In my correspondence to the Council CEO I have also requested that the Retained Firefighters are briefed on the findings of this report.

This should be the first step – and it can be done safely through an online forum”.

Back in the swing of things!

Fresh from the joys of a return to the golf course, our columnist is now dreaming of the “almost forgotten pleasure” of a nice creamy pint of Guinness…

It’s Monday morning, June 8th, and there can be no doubt that things feel different today.

After almost three long months, shops are reopening this morning, people can travel 20 km from their homes – and more if they are within their county boundaries – and even though the pubs can’t open for another few weeks, I can actually imagine myself sampling the almost forgotten pleasure of a nice creamy pint of Guinness before the end of the month.

However, for me, now that my working life has come to an end, it is the fact that I can take out my golf clubs (if I can find them) and head to the beautiful newly-extended

course that is Castlerea, where I am booked in to play a round, that has excited me the most. The truth is that I have never before looked forward as much to playing a round of golf.

The great thing is that despite the long lay-off, I am certain that my game will be completely unaffected, and am confident that I will be just as bad as I was before the pandemic set in. However, the thought of being allowed to walk around the splendid parkland course, take in the lovely scenery

and just breathe the fresh air, fills me with joy. I really can’t wait. I will tell you how I get on towards the end of this piece.

The sad thing is that, due to the new regulations, you can’t pick up any lost balls, which will definitely mean I will need a good few more than usual, but even that won’t put me off. Golf, along with tennis, is about the only sport out there that ordinary folk are currently allowed to play, so watch out Castlerea. I am coming back. (To see how Frank got on, see ‘And finally’ below).

Missing club games I have to admit that the pandemic has given me a new awareness as to what means the most to me, and I am surprised to find that I haven’t missed the inter-county hurling and football championships that much.

However, I really miss having no club games to go to.

There is nothing to compare with the excitement of heading off to some local pitch, having a go at the referee, exchanging pleasantries and abuse with supporters of the opposition – most of whom you know and would often have a pint with

– and just feeling that sense of pride and belonging in your local club.

Of course you can also have a go at your own players and management!

In my opinion, the fact that club championship games could (possibly) be back on the 31st of July is wonderful news. I can’t wait until we in Creggs can line out against our neighbouring clubs again.

As of now there is no indication as to whether there will be a resumption of leagues, or how the championships will be run, but for everyone – players, management and

My sympathy for Sil

On to more serious matters, and I have to admit that I have never actually seen the comedian Sil Fox live. Sil is a regular on one of my favourite radio programmes, Joe Duffy’s ‘Funny Friday’ section on Liveline. For years now I have listened to him as he told his stories and his gags, and in fairness I have found him to be very funny.

However, in July 2019, at the age of 86, Mr. Fox found himself facing a charge of sexual assault after it was alleged that he assaulted a woman who asked to have her photograph taken with him at a Christmas party the previous year.

Now, the plaintiff is entitled to make the allegations, but when the case eventually went to court last week, the Judge ‘threw it out’ because there were inconsistencies between the complainant’s evidence and the CCTV footage. One would have to ask why the case went to court at all.

Surely it must have been obvious all along that the CCTV evidence did not support the alleged assault?

It is a fault of our justice system that someone can accuse someone else of such serious misconduct, thereby putting the accused, as in the case of Sil Fox, through months of hell, and presumably walk away scot-free at the end of it all – even though the incident (as alleged) never actually took place. At the age he is, surely Mr. Fox was entitled to live out his life with his good name intact.

I just feel it was an abomination that he had to go through what his accuser put him through, for no apparent reason. He said he has had no bookings since the news of the charges broke, so I just hope some of his former supporters come back on board, and when things go back to some sort of normal, that Sil Fox will once again top the bill. I promise to go to see him if that does happen.

supporters alike – all that matters is that games resume in some shape or form, and that we have somewhere to go. Let’s hope spectators will be allowed! If not, at least in Creggs we could look through the hedge that surrounds the pitch.

Now I’m not sure that if and when the inter-county games come back, the old Roscommon/Galway rivalry will automatically reappear, but for now let’s just look forward to the return of the club game and the renewal of long-standing hostilities.

An epic night at Loftus Road I am up to number six of my best sporting memories, and it’s on to boxing this time, and wee Barry McGuigan’s world title win over the previously unbeaten Eusebio Pedroza in Loftus Road football stadium on the 8th of June 1985.

Back in those days (not that much has changed, at least for me) Mikeen’s bar used to be the place to watch boxing in. You would nearly need to book your seat in advance to be guaranteed a look at the fight. The crowds would be six or seven deep at the counter, and every vantage point – including perching on people’s shoulders and standing on tables – would be taken up, and the atmosphere was always just incredible (not much health and safety back then, thank God).

When Pedroza was dropped in round seven – and didn’t get up – all hell broke loose.

Several hundred thousand supporters turned out to welcome McGuigan and his wife, Sandra, home to Belfast. He was to retain his title twice before making the nearly fatal decision to go to Las Vegas and fight Steve Cruz, a Texan, under a blazing sun. McGuigan suffered so badly from dehydration that he needed hospital treatment after the fight, although he only narrowly lost the bout.

That experience triggered McGuigan’s first retirement and a major falling out with his mentor, Belfast bookie, Barney Eastwood. However, regardless of anything else, his world title win in 1985 was something special, and is well worth its place in my top ten.

Derry Girls or Killinascully?

While all the disruption to our lives has been going on, there is no doubt that I have watched more telly these last few months than I normally would. The other night, having listened for ages to the news about the great success of Derry Girls, I decided to take a look.

I am wondering this morning if I am lacking in something as I have to admit that I had turned it off by the time it came to the first break. Now I fully accept that the problem most likely lies with me, but I just couldn’t get the humour and – sad to say – give me Killinascully any time.

The return over the last few weeks of the Pat Shortt masterpiece has really been very enjoyable, and, (sadly) appeals to my warped sense of humour.

The good news however is that I have

a hardcore of crime shows like Blue Bloods, FBI, The Rookie, and action shows like Station 19 and 9-1-1 to keep me entertained. All in all, telly life in lockdown has been very bearable.

However, now that golf, pubs, and club football are on the horizon, I won’t need the TV programmes as much – I can’t wait!

And finally…

Finally for this week, I am back from my visit to Castlerea Golf Club (see separate item, above) and everything I predicted earlier came true.

The course (slightly changed) was spectacular, and the weather was just perfect (neither too hot or too cold).

Health regulations were enforced, but we are nearly used to that stuff now, so it was in no way intrusive.

Best of all, my golf was just as bad as ever. My son, Paul, who never really plays golf (at least not until now) beat me pretty comfortably.

Despite that blow to my pride, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit, and it was great to be back. I am definitely going to keep it up this summer, and maybe some day I might even improve a bit.

There was a very strong trade for weanling heifers with prices ranging from an average of €2.37 per kilo up to €3.00 per kilo resulting in all lots sold to one. Weanling bulls also met with a firm trade with lots averaging from €2.29 per kilo up to €3.33 per kilo.

BVD Eradication Programme update On Tuesday, the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed reaffirmed the continued drive of industry partners towards the eradication of bovine viral diarrhoea virus from the national herd when he confirmed that he has recently signed a new Statutory Instrument S.I No 182 of 2020, the Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (Amendment) Regulations 2020, to require the compulsory testing of animals in the national herd that were born prior to January 2013.

Minister Creed expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing progress being made in the eradication of BVD. The Minister noted that substantial savings were being achieved by farmers, with the incidence of PIs falling to 0.04 % at the end of 2019 – in from 0.66% at the end of 2013 – the first year of the compulsory phase of the Eradication Programme.

ICMSA expecting milk price rise

The chairperson of ICMSA’s Dairy Committee has said that his Association expects the prices to be announced over the next days by processors for milk supplied in May to reflect what he called a “surging recovery”.

Mr. Gerald Quain said that the rally that had begun in the last week of April had actually picked up pace and industry standard indexes were now climbing upwards on back of food services’ reopenings, normal consumption patterns being resumed, and projected data from important dairy producing regions.

Sherry FitzGerald P. Burke officially opened its doors in Roscommon town 20 years ago this week, on the 9th of June, 2000.

The partnership has gone from strength to strength in the years since, with Sherry FitzGerald P. Burke now long established as one of the leading Estate Agents & Auctioneers in the region.

As he celebrates the 20th anniversary of the opening of Sherry FitzGerald P. Burke, P. Burke is taking a positive view of the economic and social outlook for a county which undoubtedly faces many challenges, not least due to the Covid-19 fallout.

Mr. Burke sings the praises of Roscommon town and county, and believes the great quality of life offered here can present an opportunity in the Covid era.

With many more people set to work from home in the coming months and years, he sees this cultural and societal change as a real opportunity for Roscommon’s towns and villages.

P. Burke says a new three-bedroomed residence in Roscommon town can be purchased for around €180,000. “It’s actually cheaper than building” he notes. He speculates that a property costing up to €400,000 in Dublin can be acquired here for around €220,000.

P. Burke has a number of such properties available now, and is in fact looking for more, in order to meet current demand.

While he is confident and positive about the outlook for the county, he doesn’t for one moment underestimate the scale of the challenges presented by both Covid-19, and a general under-development of rural Ireland.

“Clearly we need to see balanced regional development, something which we have not experienced. This is urgently required, now more than ever, if our towns and villages are to have a chance of prospering. People want to live in places like Roscommon, and they have to be supported.

“While the broadband is good in some ar-

eas, it needs to be urgently improved in other parts of the county. I also feel that it would be timely for the Government to revisit the issue of decentralisation. We need more decentralisation to Roscommon. We need industry here. A factory with a couple of hundred jobs is long overdue for the county town”.

Mr. Burke would also like to see imaginative measures introduced to incentivise people to refurbish properties. Listening to him talk about Roscommon town and county is inspiring, as he emphasises all of the positive aspects of life here, and highlights the further potential of this area.

“We have to be positive. Yes, Covid is a challenge, but we have to fight it together.

Local businesses must be supported. I also think that the Central Bank guidelines with regard to lending are too stringent, and need to be adjusted, as we need to get loans to people. We all need to help one another. We have a lot going for us. We live in a great place”.

20 years ago this week, Sherry FitzGerald P. Burke officially opened a state-of-theart premises at Goff Street, Roscommon.

8 YEARS AGO Big win for Creggs Connacht Junior Cup Carrick-on-Shannon 5 Creggs 58 Creggs advanced to the second round of the Junior Cup with a comprehensive win over a brave and determined Carrick side at Leitrim village community grounds on Sunday. Creggs got off to a great start, with second row Alan Glennon and prop Joe Heavey scoring tries in a whirlwind opening ten-minute spell. With Carrick struggling to contain the powerful Creggs pack, Bernard Kilcommons knifed his way through for another try in the 18th minute, converted by Emmet Collins.

A Collins penalty gave Creggs a comfortable 20-0 lead, before Carrick gradually began to secure more possession and apply some pressure on the Creggs defence. In a dominant spell by the home pack, Carrick missed three kickable penalties before half-time and almost breached the Creggs line on several occasions.

The match continued in similar vein after half-time, and Carrick finally got a try which was thoroughly deserved following another period of sustained pressure. That score sparked Creggs back into action, and when impressive no. 8 Ja Hughes ran 50 metres for a superb solo try in the 47th minute, there looked to be no way back for the Leitrim men.

And so it proved, with Creggs easing into gear with two further tries by Hughes to complete his hat-trick, while prop forward replacement Larry Mannion also stormed over for two tries with a combination of nifty footwork and excellent handling. Michael Holland also got in on the scoring act with a powerful run which outstripped the tiring home defence.

Brilliant win in Buncrara Oscar Traynor Cup Donegal 1 Roscommon 3 The Roscommon & District League team are through to the quarter-finals of this season’s Oscar Traynor Cup competition following a stunning 3-1 win over the Inishowen League away at Buncrana.

Overall the team played exceptionally well with a strong defensive performance by David Fitzpatrick, John Tierney, Michael Killalea and Martin Lennon.

Only on one occasion was the visitors’ goalkeeper Aidan Fallon forced to pull off a good save.

The Roscommon & District League broke the deadlock after twelve minutes of play when good work by midfielders Ronan Curran and Aidan Dooney created an opening for Colm Killackey and the Ballymoe player volleyed to the net.

With twenty-eight played Colm Killackey scored a somewhat similar goal after good work

by David Keegan and David Cullen.

With just a minute played in the second half Inishowen pulled a goal back through Paul McDermott. However with Liam Lynch and Colm Killackey tormenting the Donegal side’s defence it was only a matter of time before the Roscommon & District League scored again.

Rossies retain Connacht title Connacht Minor Football League Roscommon 1-14 Galway 0-12 Roscommon turned in a powerful second-half performance to overwhelm Galway and thus retain the Connacht minor league title, which they also won in 2011. It means that Roscommon went through this league campaign unbeaten and the win will be a tonic as manager Gareth Carroll turns his attentions to the Connacht Championship and a first round clash against Leitrim.

Roscommon actually started this game well and points from Diarmuid Murtagh (2) and Ciaran Casserly opened up an early three-point lead, but after that it was all Galway. Points

from Gary Kelly (3) and Jason Lyons saw the Tribesmen take the lead by the 12th minute before a Ruardhi McManus free levelled the scores again in the 16th minute.

But Galway took over after that and points from Gary Kelly (2), Sean Hughes, Johnny Heaney and Barry McHugh saw Galway ahead by five points, and although Cathal Compton scored a Roscommon point in injury-time it was looking bad for the home side.

But there was an incredible transformation in the second half and points from Diarmuid Murtagh (2) Brian Fannon and Ruardhi McManus saw the sides level by the 12th minute.

Then the sides swapped points and with ten to go there was nothing between the sides.

Ultan Harney nudged Roscommon ahead with a great team score and then with four minutes to go Cathal Compton was again on target to put his side two clear. With two minutes to go Roscommon sealed their victory when Ciaran Kilcline passed to Kevin Finn and the Strokestown player blasted to the Galway net to seal an excellent victory and start off a very good evening for Roscommon underage football at Dr. Hyde Park.

Tesco HomeGrown NFL Division 4 Roscommon 3-12 Louth 0-4 Ballyfeeney Rock sponsored Roscommon senior ladies are still top of Division 4 table with four wins out of four following a comprehensive victory over Louth in Strokestown on Sunday afternoon last.

This was a very important win for the Roscommon ladies as it guarantees them top of the table spot and a perfect chance to make it to the final as first plays fourth on the table in the semi-finals.

The Roscommon ladies got the perfect start a point from play from Jenny Higgins within forty five seconds of the throw in her club mate Martina Freyne extended the lead to two a minute later.

The first of Roscommon’s three goals came in the fifth minute a long ball out of defence by Gillian Dufficy was gathered by Natalie McHugh and she showed a clean pair of heels to her marker and fired to the bottom corner of the Una Pearson’s net.

The Covid-19 pandemic has seen the unprecedented suspension of all GAA activity, for fourteen weeks and counting.

Last weekend the GAA published a road map that it hopes will see a safe return to action at all levels.

We asked SEAMUS DUKE to zoom in on the issues arising. He linked up, via Zoom, with four well-known GAA personalities in the county to discuss this extraordinary, barren GAA summer, the mooted return to action, and the challenges that arise both on and off the field, at club and county level

VIEWS SD: What have you all missed most since the lockdown began?

M McD: I have definitely missed the football, and the activity around the clubhouse. I know everyone talks about championship, but to me, I love the league and I love the league matches.

I love going to grounds where you meet the usual three to four guys who are in every club, the old stalwarts that you have the cup of tea and the chat with, and you go out and play the match, and while we want to win every game we play, there isn’t the same pressure on players or officials (in the league). You have a chat after it’s over. You shake hands at the end of it, which you can’t do now either!

SD: You don’t miss the meetings?

M McD: One good part of it is that I don’t miss the meetings! But in all seriousness it is very difficult on clubs at the moment. From our own perspective our income stream has evaporated.

I really miss going to the matches most of all.

I just miss going to the ground and enjoying a game and being close to the action.

HL: As a teacher, I miss the children in school.

I haven’t been in work since the 12th of March.

With regard to the GAA, I definitely do not miss the meetings. I do honestly miss the craic at the matches – and that could be an U-14 league game or an adult league game or whatever is on. I miss the craic and the banter. I also miss the actual activity, as in being busy with regard to, for example, the county teams. I also miss being in the car. I filled up the car last March and it hasn’t been re-filled since! But I have been walking and cycling and I’m thoroughly enjoying that.

MF: As Hugh said, from a work point of view, you’d miss the kids, number one. I also miss the social outlet that football is – and it’s more of an outlet than I realised.

I really enjoy the social element of being involved with the team, and I miss that. It’s the same with work. I miss the ‘get up and go’ and the drive – from a football point of view I suppose I fed off that drive – of having a training session in the evening time, or having a match to plan for. The rug was pulled from under us on that front…certainly the social thing is a lot bigger than I realised.

So I miss that, and obviously the actual football and the actual training sessions.

PC: I miss the matches and being involved with the club. In Elphin, we were going to be playing senior league this year. I miss playing matches, meeting players and meeting people from other clubs. You just miss meeting people.

Work-wise, I love meeting the kids in schools and watching out for players and I certainly have missed that too. Also, the social end of the GAA, all the people I used to meet during the day, and in the evenings. Zoom meetings are alright, but they are just not the same. I am involved with development squads, and this year I was due to be involved with the U-14s, so that’s gone for the moment. You’re seeing talent coming through. So I miss all that. But there are other things we don’t miss, such as the time spent at it (the GAA)…the amount of hours we spent with the GAA, the time spent away from home, was unreal. It’s only now we realise that. But it’s the social end of it that I miss most really.

Hugh Lynn (HL) Hugh Lynn is PRO of Roscommon County Board and a national ‘PRO of the Year’ winner Michael McDonnell (M McD) Michael McDonnell is chairperson of St Brigid’s GAA Club SD: When GAA action eventually resumes, will there be the same level of interest as before?

PC: That’s something that I have thought about over the past few weeks. The amount of time that players, especially county players, give to the game is phenomenal. Their whole life is given to playing football. They are training or playing almost seven days a week. I would say that some players who are nearing the end of their careers might just ask can they give all this time?

MF: I would say that players would be asking the question ‘what am I spending all my time at this for?’. To be honest, a lot of us had too much going on in our lives before Covid-19 came along. I was spending an awful lot of time at football and I didn’t really need to be spending that much time at it. Some of our players are probably doing more now than when this started, but they are training on their own. We did a few online sessions, we’d be on Zoom…but we are in off-season mode now.

M McD: I think the interest will still be there.

There will be some people who might be reevaluating, but I think we had come to the stage where we had to (begin to) think smarter…about club players commuting and all of that. We should be looking at trying to facilitate players in Dublin and stop(ping) this endless hours sitting in cars. We had individual fitness programmes in place there for a while but it is very difficult to keep that going. I feel there is a huge appetite among players to get back on a pitch and start playing football again. The age profile of our

team is very young. I would agree that there may be some older players, especially on the county set-up, who may say I can’t commit that time going forward.

HL: The GAA club grounds that have walking tracks are opening. I think there are eight clubs in the county with dedicated walking tracks, so they can reopen, no problem. But there are quite onerous conditions being put on to clubs, to ‘police’ it first of all, and then there will have to be signage, etc. There has been demand for this for some time, because the roads aren’t that safe for walking on.

I think most people would welcome a return to training in July, and club games in August, with a possibility of inter-county action later in the year.

The other thing that needs to be looked at is… young people have really suffered massively. I want to see young children out in the GAA field kicking a ball in the fresh air. Young people have suffered massively in all this so there is a need to address their situation and to have them out and about would help.

SD: You will all agree that it’s very important for young people to exercise and play. Should the Cúl Camps go ahead this year if they can be safely run?

PC: There is a lot that needs to happen before the camps can be held. To try to achieve social distancing for players…eight-year-olds to 12-year-olds…that’s going to be difficult. We will probably have to have smaller numbers.

The Cúl Camps have been very successful and the kids really enjoy them, but if the format was changed and the camps were cut down in terms of size and what they could do, I am not sure that the kids would enjoy them as much as was the case in the past. There would have to be far more supervision as well. Kids need to go to the toilet…who’s going to give them the hand hygiene, disinfectant, etc. – these issues will have to be addressed. There will need to be a number of coaches (present) and they have to be tested. Some clubs may be reluctant to open their pitches to Cúl camps if their own club isn’t allowed to train.

M McD: We might be putting the cart before the horse on this one. If we haven’t been trusting our adult players to adhere to health regulations – and they understand the risks involved – how

do we expect kids of that age to? The kids are being told that they cannot go back to school until September, yet we are expecting them to go to Cúl Camps. So we have to be very careful.

SD: Covid-19 will have massive financial implications for every facet of the association…what are your thoughts?

HL: There’s no money coming in. There’s very little going out. The big costs have stopped. One of the big costs for the county board would be the preparation of teams. But definitely, there’s no revenue coming in. Clubs are in the same boat and it’s all going to have a massive impact.

That’s one of the reasons that might encourage the powers that be to move things on a bit. I cannot see a provincial championship at club level taking place. Finance-wise, Roscommon needs its gates – and its games – every other county is the same. So realistically there has to be games.

PC: Clubs are finding it hard now. We see that ourselves. All the clubs are the same. There’s no money coming in, but I suppose the good thing about it is there’s no money going out. We will have to see what the implications are for sponsors in the long run and that will be a worry for every club.

M McD: We’re (St. Brigid’s) caught from all angles. Our clubhouse bar has been closed, pitch rental (gone), which would be a big one for us, then you take your club lotto too. We had a major fundraiser planned for Easter but that was called off too, so we have taken a major hit right across the board. The biggest concern you’d have is when you go back out into the marketplace – whenever we open up again – what kind of state are these loyal sponsors going to be in? It will be difficult knocking on doors. It’s going to be a slow build-up again, to get people back onside again. But everyone is in the same boat. Look, it might make us all take a look at ourselves. Maybe we’ll realise within club structures that we were all overspending.

We’re all guilty of it to a degree. Maybe when you’re chasing the dream you do over-extend yourself at some stage. But someone has pulled the handbrake with this virus, so it may be time to reassess – because I think clubs are going to be in a different climate.

MF: It’s hard to know what the financial implications will be with regard to county teams but the situation is that everyone is in the same boat and we will plan ahead accordingly when the time comes. The whole fixtures’ situation in the GAA needs to be looked at…the whole system is overrun. I think the season goes on way too long. I’d love to see a discussion on that before the end of this year, but that’s probably a pipe dream.

HL: I would warmly welcome the plan. At least now we have a set of guidelines. We are taking small steps, but at this stage we know what those steps will be. This plan will be operated by volunteers in every club and the Covid officer will now have a big role to play at club level and with every team. Each club will now have to start to make plans immediately with things like outdoor hand-washing facilities and

other requirements under the regulations. We have a few weeks to do that now. I’m delighted that players will be able to go back training and playing and they have dates now that they can aspire to. With regard to the inter-county championship it would be marvellous if the All-Ireland final was played on the 100th anniversary of ‘Bloody Sunday’ on the 22nd of November in Croke Park.

PC: It’s great that we can see light at the end of the tunnel. I’m glad that club players can get back training from July. But it will be a very big job to police all this and clubs will have to get cracking at it straight away. There will be a huge amount of work to comply with the regulations.

But the news that there are definite dates about training and playing will give everyone a lift.

Players will now have a date to aim for and that’s very positive.

MF: I have to say I was wary about any definite plan but now that it’s here I’m glad we have it.

We have something to aim for now, and it is much easier to plan ahead. The fact that clubs will be back first is a no-brainer and I am glad that our players will have a bit of club action under their belts before the county training starts.

This situation will have to be policed well but we will have the advantage of seeing how it is being dealt with at club level before the county season starts. You have to say it’s a very positive development.

M McD: The fact that there is a plan is very welcome, but there are a few things that would worry me. Firstly, the Covid officer in every club will be a vital role. That officer will have a huge workload because compliance will be key.

I can see a problem with regard to fixtures and club players. There will be no club training until the 1st of July. Then club players are expected to play championship only four weeks later. Does it mean that clubs can play challenge games over that four-week training period? It looks like there will be no league games to prepare teams and my fear is that the club fixtures are being shoehorned into a very narrow window.

To be honest, I would much prefer to see the club championship start on the 1st of September.

I know that the inter-county games are planned for October, but my fear would be that we are rushing into a club championship without proper preparation.

GAA targets club return in late July < SEAMUS DUKE

GAA clubs across the county are working hard to prepare for a return to action over the next couple of months following the GAA’s unveiling of its ‘Safe Return to Gaelic Games’ document last Friday.

Clubs’ outdoor walkways have been permitted to reopen for four hours per day since last Monday, and there will be a gradual return to training and to the playing of games in the coming weeks and months.

The aims of the document (which are subject to Government health advice) are that club games will be allowed from the end of July, with inter-county action recommenc-

ing from the 17th of October. Strict guidelines will be in place, with every club required to appoint a ‘Covid supervisor’ who will be responsible for the application of the rules on social distancing, hygiene, etc. Every team will also be expected have a person designated to deal with the restrictions.

The ‘road map’ envisages club championships being played in late July/August and September, with the All-Ireland Championships due to start on October 17th.

Fixtures committees in all counties will be meeting over the next few weeks to plan for the shortened season ahead. The GAA at national level will decide in the coming weeks

Albigna and Shane Foley win the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac in Paris

Following last Monday’s resumption at Naas todays action is at Gowran Park. Tomorrow sees the first of the 2-day Guineas Festival at the Curragh with Leopardstown racing on Sunday.

Monday sees the racing season at Lenabane commence sharing the day with Fairyhouse, both on the level. Evening races starts with both weekend meetings at the Curragh. Roscommon on Monday is also an evening meeting.

Friday sees the first Irish Classic, the 2000 Guineas, of the season as the O’Brien clan had 9 of the 15 at the declaration stage, Aidan with 7 and Joseph with 2. Of the 11 that go to post Aidan saddles 6 in the race and is taking on a hot favourite in Ger Lyons’s Siskin ridden by Colin Keane. The others are Jim Bolger’s Fiscal Rules, Mick Halford’s Sinnawan, Jessica Harrington’s Free Solo and Andrew Slattery’s Rebel Tale.

Golf Clubs unhappy as competitions’ return deferred Local Golf Clubs have expressed their dissatisfaction with a directive informing them that clubs could not resume competitions until the 29th of June.

In a statement, Boyle Golf Club said that they were so directed “on the basis that no other competitive sports were being played in other codes before that date”.

Boyle Golf Club did not hide its anger, a spokesperson commenting: “This week was to have been the long-awaited resumption date for competitions, but in a very unwelcome development, we received a press release from the ladies’ and gents’ national golf organisations advising they had been directed by Sport Ireland that clubs could not resume competitions until the 29th of June, on the basis that no other competitive sports were being played in other codes before that date.

“It seems horse and greyhound racing are somehow exempt from this logic, while competitive golf is now in the same risk category as sports such as judo and boxing. Perhaps we have been playing it wrong all these years!

“We understand the two golf unions are angry about this decision, as are we at local level. The management committee of the club had a meeting by Zoom on the preceding Wednesday and had worked on numerous measures to ensure the safe return of competitive golf to the club. Yet another version of the

2020 fixture list will be issued in the coming weeks”.

While some dismay was expressed by Roscommon Golf Club members on social media, the Club’s official media position was more measured.

In a statement, Roscommon Golf Club said the delay in competitions resuming was “disappointing”.

“The Club were also hoping to start club competitions for members but unfortunately were advised by GUI/ ILGU at the weekend that golf clubs are now not permitted to hold competitions in Phase 2”.

RDFL clubs vote to finish season

Roscommon & District Football League clubs have voted in favour of finishing the current league season from August 28th-October 11th as advised by the FAI steering committee.

RDFL Chairperson Niall Kelly said: “We wish to thank all clubs for their views. The application to complete the current league season will be made in the coming week.

“We wish all of our clubs, sponsors, and stakeholders a safe passage through this pandemic”.

On Saturday there are 20 fillies entered in the 1000 Guineas and the O’Brien clan again have 9 of the entries with Aidan and Joseph 4 each and Donnacha 1. They all have to beat Jessica Harrington’s Albigna ridden by Shane Foley, who gave the English equivalent a miss. There are no overseas runners in either race.

On Monday there are 6 races advertised for Lenabane. In the first there are 41 in The Roscommon Maiden over 7f, the second is The www.roscommonracecourse.com Handicap again over 7f, the third is The Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden with 25 runners.

The next is again sponsored by The Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Maiden for colts and geldings with 32. There is also 32 in the 5th The Global Rossies Day on 21st June Handicap and racing closes with the Ivan Connaughton Auctioneers Handicap. The last 4 are all over 1m 2f. The going is good to firm with selected watering ongoing. Starting time is 4.15pm but could change as there will be divisions. Last weekend three Group 1 races took place at Newmarket, in the Coronation Cup on Friday Ballydoyle’s Anthony Van Dyke, ridden by Ryan Moore, failed to catch the favourite Ghaiyaath and was beaten by 2½l with Frankie Dettori the same length back in 3rd on Stradivarius.

On Saturday 15 went to post in the 2000 Guineas with the odds on unbeaten Pintourbo finishing only 3rd beaten a neck and 1l by Kameko and Wichita.

Kameko gave Killarney jockey Oisin Murphy his first classic winner and Wichita, trained by Aidan O’Brien, under Frankie Dettori was just held off.

On Sunday O’Brien saddled his fourth of the last 5 winners of the 1000 Guineas Classic with Love and Ryan Moore easily beating the field by 2½l with Cloak Of Spirits 2nd and the unbeaten favourite Quadrilateral a head away in 3rd. Moore has not always got it right since winning the 2016 on Minding with Wayne Lordan winning on Hermosa and Winter in 2017 and 2018. Jessica Harrington’s Millisle ran a very disappointing race finishing a well beaten 7th by 10l.

Shane Foley quickly made up for missing the ride on Millisle in the Newmarket Guineas by riding a 4-timer at Naas on Monday out of 6 rides.

Foley rode Lucky Vega, Punita Arora and Masteroffoxhounds for his retainer Jessica Harrington and Parkers Hill for Co Down trainer Leanne Breen. He finished 2nd on his other 2 rides Roses Blue and Aunt Bee both for Harrington.

Aidan O’Brien had a double with More Beautiful and Elfin Queen.

Aidan O’Brien followed up his double in Naas with a 4 timer in Leopardstown on Tuesday. Ballydoyle won the first 4 with Ennistymon and Seamie Heffernan, Tiger Moth with Wayne Lordon, Cormorant with Padraig Beggy and Heffernan completed his double on Love Locket.

Gordon Lord Byron, Tom Hogan’s champion sprinter, died on the gallops last Tuesday during routine exercise. Owned by Morgan Cahalan, better known in National Hunt circles, and his daughter Jessica the 12-Y-O gelding cost €2,000 and won over €2m in prizemoney winning 16 of his 108 races. He won Group 1 races in France, Britain and Australia and 11 races in Ireland.

His last run was on the all-weather in Dundalk last December and he made his debut in Lenabane pulling up in a 7f maiden.

Royal Ascot starts behind closed doors next Tuesday and for the first time in history there will be no top hats and tails. This year the track has relaxed its dress code for those allowed to gain entry and there will be no royal presence. Trainers, jockeys, stable staff and the media are simply asked to dress appropriately.

The sands of time – and a golfing ‘Matador’ with a magic touch HEROES

and logic! Throughout his career, there were many wonder shots that had fans (including his peers) gasping.

We loved Ballesteros for his thrilling play, and we also loved him for his passion. Great putts were greeted by his tradeback fist pump; tournament wins by his matador-like reaction.

His haul of five majors was fantastic, considering how unconventional a player he was. He was also World No. 1 for a period. And while injuries led to a drastic loss of form in the latter part of his career, the memory of his genius will live on forever.

REFLECTIONS ON SPORTING INSPIRATIONS

We always seemed to park on the beach in those days, as if the occasion was so momentous, so precious in all its promise, that it just had to be marked by our car being perched on the sand, equidistant between the rugged dunes and the gleaming sea. We weren’t the only ones. Most families seemed to park their Cortina or Hillman Hunter on the beach in those days.

It was usually Sligo, except when it was Galway. On that summer’s day in 1982, it was Rosses Point. The sun was scorching. My father parked right bang in the middle of the sand. Around us, parents unfurled blankets and arranged picnic baskets and towels and buckets and spades, protectively marking their territory like they’d rented some new prime retail space on the High Street.

My father rolled the car window down, so we could hear Michael O’Hehir, wherever he was. The afternoon would be enjoyed to a soundtrack of kids giggling, shrieks of joy from the sea, and Michael’s voice. The sun, the beach, and the voice of the GAA. As always, Michael made magic for our minds. But then RTE began to cut away from Michael. Time and time again they interrupted the King. So much so that we rose from the sand and hung on every word from the new voice coming from the car radio. And in the sweltering sun, with Michael for once silenced, we willed ever little white ball into every little hole. And sure enough, John O’Leary won the Carroll’s Irish Open, as children built castles in the sand on the beach in Rosses Point. An Irishman winning the Irish Open, in our time.

Later, we got back to Rooskey just in time to see the highlights. This golf…yeah, it could be interesting.

And not a schmozzle in sight.

From Florida to the fairway

Two years earlier, we were on a family holiday in Florida, a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. In Miami, I went into a small sports shop one day, where the tall, beaming youth behind the counter greeted me as if we’d always been friends.

I asked if I could buy a ball “for soccer”, an enquiry which drew a blank expression from my new buddy. I repeated what I considered to be a reasonable request, particularly in a sports shop. It quickly became clear that my friend didn’t know the type of football I was referring to. “Soccer” I reiterated, “I want to play soccer”. He gestured for assistance, beckoning someone from the shop’s private quarters.

Suddenly, his twin brother – equally tall and joy-filled – emerged from a side door. Then the first guy, who, I repeat, was running a sports shop, smiled at his brother: “Hey, you won’t believe it…this dude’s looking for a SOCCER ball!” (Now I could see the scale of the challenge facing George Best and Pele, in trying to help spread the Beautiful Game stateside).

Browsing in a bigger sports shop a few days later, I was admiring a set of golf clubs, just passing the time, when my father surprised me.

The sands of time…

Shocked me, in fact…by suddenly buying those beautiful new clubs for me! A thoughtful bonding gesture which I think cost him about 80 dollars, a nice ball of money 40 years ago. I’m not sure I made great use of them, but I’ll never forget that moment.

So, two years on, it’s 1982 and I’m finally making my golfing debut, teeing off at Longford Golf Club. I’ve come from Rooskey, my clubs have come all the way from Florida. How hard can this golf be? Swoosh! My first tee shot splits the fairway. Nice! Confident walk. And then the mental torture begins. Daisy-cutters. Slices. Fresh air shots. Lost balls. Underhit chips. Overhit chips.

Divots. Despair. Mind muddled under the weight of advice from well-meaning friends. ‘Keep your head straight’. ‘Hold the club this way’. ‘Don’t try to murder the ball’. That sort of stuff. I stuck with it for 15 years, on and off. Consistent torture, punctuated by the odd inexplicably straight shot…

Getting hooked…

For all its cruelty, it’s easy to get hooked on golf.

It’s a wonderful game. But, up to this point in my life at least, most of the enjoyment I’ve got from golf has been as a viewer, rather than as a player.

And it’s been a great ride.

When I was becoming a fan, Ireland had its share of top class players. On their day, Darcy and O’Connor Junior, Rafferty and Walton, these guys could beat anyone, but they couldn’t quite reach the very top. My favourite Irish player of that era was Des Smyth, a magical putter in his prime.

With its abundance of superstars and characters, golf in the 1980s (and in later years) was perfect TV viewing for the sports fan. Bernhard Langer was the coolest guy around. Greg Norman was a swashbuckling superstar, who probably wrestled crocodiles as a pastime. Nick Faldo was Steve Davis with a golf club; merciless, apparently lacking charisma, ruthless, fascinating. The Americans – most of them dashing, flamboyant, supremely

confident – brought the game to an exciting new level. I loved Jack Nicklaus, who was still having the odd great duel with fellow gentleman, Tom Watson. Lee Trevino wasn’t just a great golfer, he was also a pretty good amateur comedian! Arnold Palmer was past his best, but it was great to see the legend in action.

Even before Sky Sports, this was great fun and drama on our TV screens, whenever we were lucky enough to see golf. But for me, one man stood out.

Occasionally he was the villain, mostly he was the hero. He was electrifying, capable of commanding all our attention, even on a stage occupied by people like Nicklaus and Norman. Yes, there was something about Seve…

Seve, the Matador

Seve was Severiano Ballesteros, a temperamental but enormously charismatic Spaniard, who was quite simply a golfing genius. He was an amazing shot-maker. He wasn’t as reliable on the conventional shots, something which made watching him all the more exciting!

The reason we loved Seve was because we had never seen anything like him before. Alex Higgins changed snooker through his personality and unique style; Ballesteros did much the same for golf. There were exciting players before him, but was there ever anyone as swashbuckling?

Seve was the most exciting golfer we’d ever seen.

He played shots that we’d never seen before. His golfing peers hadn’t seen them either! His touch with a club was itself touched by genius. Fortunately for his fans, his tendency to lose his way on the golf course meant he frequently had to try and rescue himself with shots of outrageous skill and imagination.

I recall one Ballesteros birdie which summed up his appeal. Seve missed the fairway with his tee shot. His approach to the green then found a bunker. From the sand, he chipped into the hole. Rough to bunker to hole, a birdie that defied convention

Now it’s 2020, and you’re not likely to see a Cortina or a Hillman Hunter on a beach in Sligo. And now John O’Leary is gone, having died in March of this year. And Michael O’Hehir is gone, and my father is gone too. The sands of time.

Every now and again, like most men, I clear out the garden shed. Or maybe I just rearrange the stuff. There’s stuff you throw out, and there’s stuff you should throw out, but don’t.

I shuffle the half-empty fuel cans around, and stack the cans of paint in neat rows, as though their presence is part of some elaborate plan.

Then I lift the golf bag and give the clubs a little shake, a chance to breathe. I lean the hopelessly outdated clubs against a different wall, or slide them on to another shelf. They’re pretty rusty now, as you can imagine, and certainly long out of fashion. But they’re still there…the golf clubs my father bought me in Florida in 1980.

I probably played with them 40 or 50 times, over 15 or 20 years, lots of dreadful shots, and a few of the satisfying ones that (theoretically) will always bring you back. They never let me down. It was always the other way around. Really, they deserved better; some bronzed, wisecracking American businessman should perhaps have tamed Florida’s finest courses with them.

But they’re here, and they’re mine.

Some day, I might even take them out on the course for a final time, these clubs that hold such special memories for me…of Florida, of my attempts to learn this game, mostly of my Dad. Maybe they could swoosh one more time, swoosh back into time, like it’s 1980 all over again.

Seve is gone too. He died in 2011, only 54 years of age. He had battled illness and a chronic loss of form with typical courage. He was a wonderfully inspirational sportsman, a charismatic champion who thrilled millions of fans all over the world.

I have other golfing heroes from more recent times, and we may well return to them in this series. And when I think of those stars of the past, I fondly remember Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Lee Trevino, and others. But Seve was special. A hero who inspired, and who was loved. The Matador with the unforgettable magic touch.
