Local people in Portrunny have expressed deep frustration at the conduct of some visitors to the popular scenic spot after widespread littering there last weekend.

Over recent days, hundreds of people have congregated at the Shannon in Portrunny – ten kilometres from Roscommon Town – to enjoy the heatwave.

However, locals have alleged that there was “unsocial activity”, widespread littering and trespassing into private property.

In a statement to the Roscommon People, the Portrun Development Association said: “We want to highlight the unsocial activity that has left rubbish, cans, bottles, disposable BBQs, baby nappies, dog foul and clothing. Young people gathered in large groups, diving and swimming, wandering into local property, etc.

“Have some of the residents of Roscommon no appreciation of or respect for our beautiful places? The way Portrunny was treated shows no care for this community, the county and the wider wellbeing of the country…youths, we ask you in particular, to be socially responsible”. Full story on page 12.

Log boat may be ‘thousands of years old’ This ancient boat, found recently by a 12-year-old Lisacul boy when he was paddling in a local lake, may be thousands of years old. A diary of the times that are (part 12) could actually still win the election.

The second scenario is that if he loses, he could be hard to remove. That may seem far-fetched, but do not rule it out.

Fears are growing that Trump, in the event of an election defeat, might not accept the result.

America is in turmoil, its people on edge. Division reigns. Reason has been relegated to the shadows. It is a volatile time, and with an election looming, that volatility will continue. Donald Trump has taken America to the edge – and that’s not a very safe place.

All week Ever since President Trump began his jaw-dropping press briefings on Covid-19, I’ve been tuning in to CNN most nights. Over the past week or so, the focus has switched almost entirely to the protests/looting across several American cities in the wake of the death, while in police custody, of George Floyd.

CNN is a fascinating and at times infuriating channel. On one level, its coverage is superb. It’s so different to what we are used to in Ireland and the UK. The ‘anchors’ in studio and the reporters on the ground are much more opinionated, animated, passionate. They are also very biased (in CNN’s case, against Republicans/Donald Trump). I’m well aware that Fox News is even more biased in favour of the latter! These biases create and often heighten divisions.

When you’re watching such channels, you end up wondering where the real journalism ends and the propaganda begins.

Be that as it may, it’s hard to mount any defence of President Trump just now. His conduct is dangerous. His handling of Covid-19 has been miserable, and now he is being typically aggressive and confrontational in his response to the entirely legitimate protests over instances of police brutality against the black community. The most recent of those episodes saw a white police officer detain a black man, George Floyd, by persistently kneeling on his neck, even as he cried out that he couldn’t breathe.

Mr. Floyd suffered a cardiac arrest and died. That killing has sparked extremely tense stand-offs all over America over recent nights.

circumstances. ‘Black lives matter’ is their mantra. Inevitably, with such crowds congregating, with a huge security presence and so much tension and anger in the air, and with infiltration of the crowds by anarchists, there has been some looting. Police have been provoked. Cars and buildings have been set alight. That cannot be justified, yet America’s anger is understandable. And much of the response of the State has been provocative and heavy-handed.

At such a time, America needs leadership, a President who can instill calm. Instead, Trump, the ultimate narcissist, and with two eyes fixed on November’s election – and quite possibly simply because he is unstable – reacts with maximum might and fury. As I type on Monday night,

On Monday night, I engage on Twitter, and one woman tweets that Trump will surely get his comeuppance in November’s Presidential Election. But that is far from certain.

Trump is dividing America – dangerously so – but he is doing so very deliberately. And for every appalled Trump critic, you will find an enthusiastic fan (believe it or not). There are two scenarios that critics of Trump should be wary of. One, despite being battered by the Covid crisis, Trump

I take a walk around town, in searing heat. It’s 3.30 pm on the normally bustling June Bank Holiday Monday.

But the county town is eerily quiet. For a moment, there isn’t a single person to be seen in Main Street. It’s extraordinary. Then I meet a local businessman. Small talk, in the new language of our times. We’re surrounded by silence. All bar a handful of premises’ are closed. A couple of cars pass, with music blaring, a lament for the norm.

Moments later, a few people emerge from side streets, walking, savouring the sunshine. Some wear face masks.

A mother clasps her young daughter’s hand. In Church Street, a man is on his knees, painting the lower part of a premises. There is no buzz, no bank holiday vibe, which is no surprise. The bars, restaurants, cafes and most shops, they all remain closed. From the odd house window, flows music and chatter. And the best music of all comes from the birds in the sky, with their perpetual playlist. Whatever they are making of all of this new calmness.

Canon Lavin, who died in April, was a close friend of Danny’s.

Danny, as many readers will know, is one of the greatest characters in the county, a proud Castlerea and Roscommon man who has done such great voluntary work over the years, both in sport and in the community as a whole.

Back to the story. Some years ago, Danny was going to confession. His friend, Canon Peader, was ‘on duty’ in the Confessional.

When Danny went in, Canon Peader greeted him: “Oh God, Danny Burke. How’s the football going?” The two then proceeded to talk at some length about football.

On and on they went…

Next day, when he was out on his rounds delivering the post, Danny met two local women.

Danny recalls: “They said that you must have got an awful penance, he kept you so long!”

Vehicle crashes into front of public house This was the remarkable scene at a wellknown public house last Saturday after a vehicle crashed into the front of the premises. The accident happened when the vehicle struck the front of Harte’s Corner House in Glenamaddy.

The single-vehicle accident caused considerable damage, as our photograph shows. Doors, pillars and stonework on the building were damaged.

The female driver of the vehicle was treated for shock but did not suffer serious injuries, thankfully. She was taken to University College Hospital Galway as a precaution.

Frustration as Roscommon’s Covid-19 figures spike again 12 NEW CASES IN A 24-HOUR PERIOD SPARKS CLUSTER CONCERNS ANALYSIS

ounty Roscommon has again experienced a sudden spike in confirmed cases of Covid-19.

Figures released on Sunday indicated that there had been 12 new cases of Covid-19 in County Roscommon compared with the tally as it stood 24 hours earlier.

This huge percentage increase brought the total at the time to 333.

That figure had risen to 336 as of Wednesday evening.

The sudden spike would suggest the existence of a new cluster of cases in the county (though that is unconfirmed).

Having initially been one of the least affected counties in the country, Roscommon’s Covid-19 figures have spiked significantly in recent weeks.

As of Wednesday evening, there were 336 confirmed cases of infection in the county. That compares with just 90 cases six weeks ago.

In early May – just over a month ago – there were 212 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Co. Roscommon. That total has now risen by almost 60% in just over three weeks.

Faring poorly in relation to neighbouring counties

T

o put Roscommon’s worrying Covid trend into perspective, one just needs to compare our figures with, for example, neighbouring counties.

Clearly, this is a non-scientific exercise, but it is certainly informative.

Roscommon has a population twice the size of Leitrim’s. Yet Roscommon has over four times as many cases as Leitrim (336 to 83).

Roscommon’s population is virtually the same as Sligo’s – 64,000 people in Roscommon, 65,000 in Sligo. Yet, Sligo has just 129 cases, and Roscommon is heading for 350. Waterford county has a population of 116,000, but has only 152 cases. Galway, with a population of 258,000, has less than 150 more cases than County Roscommon has. Mayo, with a population of 130,000, has 570 cases, as of Wednesday.

Roscommon was doing extremely well back in March, and into mid and late April. It is important, and only fair, to point out that County Roscommon is still doing relatively well. As of earlier this week, seventeen counties had a higher number of cases. And we know that this isn’t about league tables, or some inter-county competition. But we all passionately want to minimise the number of infections.

The Covid-19 Community Testing Static Site is based at The Lodge, Roscommon (beside Roscommon University Hospital). Appointments are by GP referral.

And while the overall figures are still relatively low (just over 0.5% of the people of Roscommon are confirmed to have contracted Covid-19), these occasional surges are worrying and very unwelcome.

Last Sunday, there were just 66 new cases in the entirety of the Republic of Ireland. Remarkably, 12 of those were in County Roscommon. Maybe it was just some sort of a quirk. Maybe it was something to do with how the numbers are collated (but the press release from the National Public Health Emergency Team clearly suggests that it was a rise of 12 in County Roscommon over 24 hours). More likely, it’s a new cluster, or a reactivated cluster.

Something has clearly gone wrong in Roscommon.

Speculation about Kepak

I

n early and mid-May, rumours began circulating that a number of employees of the Kepak meat plant in Athleague had tested positive for Covid-19.

Rumours are rumours. The Roscom-

mon People sought out facts. But it hasn’t been easy. We contacted Kepak’s PR people. They were very cordial. We were asked to email in details of our enquiries. The PR people would see what they could do. All we got back was silence.

We spoke with a number of wellplaced sources. These sources said that all employees at Kepak in Athleague were tested. They further indicated that a significant number of those employees had tested positive.

Meanwhile, concerns about the scale of coronavirus infection in meat plants nationally was raised in the Dáil. Roscommon/Galway TD Denis Naughten has been vocal on the issues arising. Raising the issue in the Dáil, Deputy Naughten spoke of clusters of infection surrounding meat plants, with high levels of infection in some such factories.

There is surely a public interest issue here. If there has been a very substantial cluster in one place in County Roscommon, there is a strong argument that the public ought to know. At the very least, it is surely desirable that

the public would be given assurances that where a number of employees (of any business) have contracted Covid-19, that these employees have gone into isolation, that contact tracing has been engaged in, that any clusters in our community are being dealt with quickly by the health authorities.

Kepak statement

W

e want to be fair to Kepak. That’s why we sent them another batch of straightforward questions again this week. We asked Kepak if all employees had indeed been tested, and if so, how many had tested positive. We asked what measures are in place in Kepak (for dealing with Covid-19). We asked if there are any plans to temporarily close the plant, and finally, we asked if Kepak management feels it has received sufficient support and guidance from the HSE on these issues.

This time, the Kepak PR people weren’t just cordial; they came back to us with something. But they didn’t

answer our specific questions, instead issuing the following statement.

“Kepak Group is designated by Government as an essential service provider; we aim to ensure that our customers have an adequate and quality supply of food available for consumers throughout this Covid-19 pandemic. All our factories, therefore, continue to remain safely operational.

“At Kepak, the health and safety of our staff, customers and suppliers is our key priority. As such, we are actively engaging with our Employee Forums, with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), the Health Service Executive (HSE) and with the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), to ensure that best practice Covid-19 control measures and procedures are implemented and adhered to across all our sites.

“Kepak continues to observe all HSE protocols during this pandemic.

We are implementing their updated protocols, including additional testing, to enhance the safe ‘return-to-work’ of our staff”.

Students applaud Duffy’s SuperValu!

As a finalist in the national Generation Apprenticeship Schools competition, St. Nathy’s College along with schools, Youthreach and Community Training Centre finalists in the 2020 Generation Apprenticeship competition, have been honouring businesses and individuals around the country who are stepping up to keep our community safe.

St. Nathy’s team members Ella Gallagher, Shauna Luby, Bethany Murphy, Rachael Davey, Ericka Ní Mhathuna, Anna Murray, David McGreal, Marcus Flynn and Padraig Taheny said: “We would like to thank the staff at Duffy’s SuperValu Ballaghaderreen for all their effort and hard work in keeping us stocked up during Covid-19. We are delighted to present them with our ‘A’ grade award”.

Organised by SOLAS, the competition asked entrants to build an A letter (based on the Generation Apprenticeship brand) from materials supplied that were previously destined for landfill.

“The competition is in its final stages and we have finalists who have created brilliant work,” said Andrew Brownlee, Chief Executive of SOLAS. As a way of keeping students engaged and motivated in their wider studies the competition promoters invited the finalists to think about how their competition entries which are in the form of 3D letter A installations could be used to celebrate what the people of this country are doing to keep each other safe.

The finalists have all inputed into short videos to explain their A grade choices.

Roscommon Golf Club: ‘We’re delighted to be open once again for our members’ Roscommon Golf Club is delighted to be open once again for our members to enjoy the delights and challenges of our beautiful 18-hole parkland golf course. Covid-19 has presented many challenges to all aspects of our society; including health, the economy, and sport, but we are very fortunate that golf is one sport that can be played safely by all ages, and the return of golf since 18th of May has been a huge boost to both our many existing and new members who have taken advantage of good golfing weather to return to the fairways in large numbers, whilst adhering to the national and GUI/ILGU protocols.

Secretary of Roscommon Golf Club, Paula Connaughton, confirmed that the Club’s Management Committee and the Mens’ and Ladies’ Committees all worked collaboratively to prepare for the club’s re-opening and to ensure that all HSE guidelines were fully complied with.

Speaking to the Roscommon People, Paula said: “We kept in touch regularly with members during the closure period, conscious of the need to offer support and solidarity in a deeply unsettling time for all, in particular our older members, whilst also informing members of preparations for our safe return”.

Pre-booked timesheets for contract tracing, new signage, the availabil-

ity of hand sanitisers, the removal of bins and rakes from the course and the new Putt Buddy mechanism which allows ball retrieval without touching the flagstick, are some of the key measures introduced to allow members to play golf safely.

Club President Tresina Smyth was delighted to welcome many members back in recent weeks, all of whom have responded very positively to the new measures and are continuing to adhere to the protocols.

The pandemic has had a significant impact on the clubs finances with Liam Byrne, Treasurer confirming the closure affected income from competitions, societies, green fees and the club’s successful annual fundraising classic, but he is hopeful much of this income can be recovered during the remainder of the year.

Charlie Farrell, club registrar, states that in common with other golf clubs, “the silver lining for Roscommon Golf Club has been the notable increase in the intake of new members, many from different sporting codes, covering a wide range of categories including beginner, student, university and junior, lapsed members returning to golf, as well as full memberships”.

The club continues to focus on the

development of the course under the guidance of Ian Gannon, Course Manager, and our staff who as essential workers, continued to keep our course maintained during the closure period and had it in great condition on our return. The club were also successful in our application for a new rough mower under the Sports Capital Programme, which we took delivery of recently and which will allow our course to continue to be maintained and presented to a very high standard for our members.

At the moment we are preparing for Phase 2 protocols. We look forward to welcoming back our members who haven’t been able to come back as yet due to the travel restrictions, or due to working on the front line and this phase also allows for competitions and both the Mens’ and Ladies’ Committees are working behind the scenes to prepare for this.

As Tom Grealy, Mens’ Captain and Sandra Black Kelly, Ladies’ Captain explained: “Competitions are the lifeblood of the club for all our members. Golfers of all ages and abilities can compete against each other regularly. The restrictions due to the pandemic mean that the club are currently exploring new systems for competition, payment and scoring and we look forward to rolling out these changes for Phase 2”.

Murphy’s fears for Castlerea Fire Station Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has said he is strongly opposed to any plans to regionalise the fire service in County Roscommon and has stressed the need for Castlerea Fire Station to be re-opened once the recent designation of the facility as a Covid-19 testing centre concludes.

Deputy Naughten and his colleagues are due to meet the leaders of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Green Party today (Thursday) to discuss Government formation and the possibility of the Independents being involved in the new Coalition.

The Roscommon/Galway TD said that he had expected that the Regional Group would be a party to the drawing up of a Programme for Government, but this option had not been given to them. Accordingly, he said, “we know about as much as the public does”.

He expects to be briefed on “the current state of play” today and to receive an outline of what has been agreed. Speaking to the Roscommon People, Deputy Naughten said that he could not speculate much more at this point.

The three are all considering whether or not to support Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Greens in a likely new Coalition arrangement.

Sinn Féin TD for Roscommon/Galway Claire Kerrane has said that special arrangements must be put in place to allow for the resumption of driving lessons and driving tests as a matter of urgency.

Deputy Kerrane said: “The Minister for Transport Shane Ross has confirmed that work is underway to find solutions as to how driving lessons, tests and other services for drivers can resume. These plans should have begun back in March when the restrictions first came into effect.

“I am awaiting figures from Minister Ross as to the number of people waiting for tests in County Roscommon and Galway, however, I have been contacted by many people – some who had started their driving lessons and need to complete them, some who had their driving test cancelled and need it to be re-arranged and some who haven’t been able to book their driving tests having completed their lessons.

“Many people, including young people, are stranded in rural communities. This is par-

ticularly difficult for young people who are starting out and trying to make plans after secondary school.

“We need urgent plans as to how these services can resume in a safe manner. Perspex dividing screens, PPE for instructors and testers, shorter driving routes or substantial alterations as necessary to the traditional testing routine, such as enclosed testing areas, should be examined. We also need to look at how other countries are providing these services post-Covid”.

PLANNING COUNTER OPEN TO PUBLIC BY APPOINTMENT In accordance with the Government Roadmap for Reopening Society and Business and the ‘Priority Actions in Reopening Services within the Planning System’, the reopening of the planning counter to members of the public in the initial phases will be by appointment only, to deal with essential business which can only be transacted at the public planning counter.

Appointments will be available every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 10am to 12 noon.

Local people in Portrunny have expressed deep frustration at the conduct of some visitors to the popular scenic spot after widespread littering there last weekend. Over recent days, hundreds of people have congregated at the Shannon in Portrunny – ten kilometres from Roscommon Town – to enjoy the heatwave. However, locals have alleged that there was “unsocial activity”, widespread littering and trespassing into private property.

Full statement from Portrun Development Association: June Bank Holiday Weekend 2020 has been unique. The best weather in a year, a welcome break from the pandemic. Missing those we care for and things to do has given an appreciation for what is within 5km.

Portrunny these past weeks and particularly this weekend has seen increased visitors. It had been highlighted on our Facebook page Portrun Development Roscommon that while people coming should adhere to the current regulations in regard to the Covid-19 pandemic, they are also asked to adhere to civic regulations of anti-littering, not swimming in areas where ‘No swimming’ signs are in place, not speeding or trespassing on private property.

The Portrun Development Association Clg are the voluntary local group who are maintaining the area. While the area is a recreation amenity for County Roscommon, the local people – not the local authority – are left to clean, plant, seek upgrades. We therefore want to highlight the unsocial activity that has left rubbish, cans, bottles, disposable BBQs, baby nappies, dog foul and clothing. Young people gathered in large groups, diving and swimming, wandering into local property, etc.

Have some of the residents of Roscommon no appreciation of or respect for our beautiful places? The way Portrunny was treated shows no care for this community, the county and the

wider wellbeing of the country. We want to ask the local authorities and those who use Portrunny to facilitate its upkeep in whatever way they can. Youths, we ask you in particular, to be socially responsible.

We want those that come to the area to enjoy it and leave no trace so that it continues to be a place of natural beauty and relaxing recreation.

NewsPeople Hospice shops to reopen Mayo-Roscommon Hospice Foundation’s twelve shops will reopen to the public on Tuesday, 9th of June. The nine shops in Mayo and three in Roscommon have remained closed since 12th of March, due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Strict safety protocols will be adhered to in all of the shops, to ensure the safety of the public and of staff and volunteers.

Transplant and dialysis sisters from Castlerea step out for IKA’s Run for a Life Susan Mulligan, a kidney transplant recipient, came out of cocooning to meet her sister Julie Sutcliffe, a dialysis patient, over the June bank holiday weekend at the Phoenix Park in Dublin to highlight the Irish Kidney Association’s Virtual Run for a Life, which celebrates organ donation.

From Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, the sisters share the same genetic polycystic kidney disease, along with two other siblings and father, who has had a kidney transplant. Within just a few months of Susan, who lives in Dublin 8, undergoing her life-changing kidney transplant in June 2019, Julie, a mother of two, who lives in Aughrim, Co. Wicklow, commenced

her twice-weekly journeys to Dublin for dialysis treatment at Tallaght Hospital. Between now and Sunday, 21st of June, the public are invited to come together while staying apart to support the Irish Kidney Association and organ donation in its 12th Run for a Life by walking, jogging or running 2.5km, 5km or 10km in their local area and to register as many times as they like at www.ika.ie.

People can donate a €10 registration fee and can choose to be included on a leader board for their chosen distance via a link. They can also share photos of their endeavours on social media – using #runforalife. There will be prizes on offer for each distance,

8 YEARS AGO Local duo star at European Transplant and Dialysis Games There was great excitement this weekend when County Roscommon participants Monica Finn and Shane Lafferty returned home from the European Transplant and Dialysis Games having both securing medals during the event.

Monica, from Athlone Road, Roscommon, enjoyed unprecedented success when she won three medals, gaining a silver in 6½ km Cycling time trial, a gold in Petanque and a bronze in the 3km walk.

“I’m proud to be returning home with three medals and it was a very enjoyable experience throughout. I broke my wrist six weeks ago so I didn’t know whether I would be able to compete but thankfully I was and I’m delighted to have won my medals,” stated Monica.

Shane, from Monskland, Co. Roscommon, secured a gold medal whilst competing in the Bowling event. Commenting on the success, Shane said: “I’m so happy to be European Champion. Going back to my country with gold on my neck is fantastic. I’ll have a party when I go home and celebrate”.

The Irish team consisted of 26 members including 17 men and 9 women who range in age from 18 to 74. The Games involve over 300 athletes from 28 countries throughout Europe.

The Games were held from August 18th to 25th and involved athletes who received organ transplants including heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas, as well as people on dialysis.

Keadue has been declared as County Roscommon’s Tidiest Town, while Castlecoote, Roscommon town and Ballyleague also won medals at the SuperValu TidyTowns competition in The Helix, Dublin, on Monday.

Unfortunately, none of the medals came in the top categories; Kilkenny city emerged with the top prize – Ireland’s Tidiest Town for 2014.

Hopes were high that one of the local towns would be in contention for that prize, after Castlecoote was given the prestigious accolade of ‘Ireland’s Best Kept Town’ in a 32-county competition last year. On this occasion, former outright winners Keadue topped the local list, scoring 313 points out of a possible 450. They were awarded a silver medal.

The judges noted the “well presented features of the village, which include traditional houses, Kilronan estate cottages, three in number, and the recent landscaping at the church overlooking the village, all looked splendid”. They also highlighted that “many superb areas of landscaping” in the village.

There was cause for further celebration for the north Roscommon area: Paraic Noone, of Keadue Tidy Towns Committee, was awarded a hero’s award, in recognition of his commitment to the village. Under Paraic’s guidance, Keadue has developed community composters and vegetable allotments and has won at least one award

Accumulating 312 points, just one less than Keadue, Castlecoote were also awarded a silver medal.

In addition, Castlecoote won an award for having “the best bring-bank in the northwest region”.

Ballintubber, who were commended by judges, achieved 300. The judges noted: “Ballintubber Castle ruins and Fairgreen are like a backdrop to a play. This is a great backdrop to Ballintubber village and what a superb one it is”.

Roscommon town have improved immensely in recent years and that continued in this year’s adjudication. With 298, they received a bronze medal.

It was noted that the Town Square had “many well presented buildings” and that the museum is a “splendid heritage building”. It was also commented that “Loughnaneane Park is a superb amenity for the community”.

The Shannonside village of Ballyleague is also a town in the ascendancy in this regard. It achieved 254 points and an endeavour award.

In 2012, considerable construction works were carried out at the school, including refurbishment of existing facilities and building an extension.

Yet a significant rise in the number of students attending the school meant that even these facilities did not suffice.

Senator John Kelly said that he was delighted that Education Minister Jan O’Sullivan had allocated the new funding.

“The numbers attending the school went up by 96 this year,” he said.

Senator Kelly said that the rise in student numbers was down to a surge in the area’s population during the Celtic Tiger.

Athleague, 8.40 pm.

It’s dark, still, almost eerily quiet.

All evening there have been ominous vibes, text messages, a sense of foreboding.

Turning into the village, it’s a relief to see no actual flooding (yet), instead hundreds of sandbags form a protective embrace around private houses and businesses.

Driving into the heart of Athleague, and dozens of volunteers are suddenly in view, clad in hi-viz jackets, their faces stern, worried, but determined too, a tapestry of humankind at work.

The volunteers have been working day and night to try to stem the ghost of 2009 as it threatens to return.

From Paul Healy’s column: Heroic community resistance in Athleague

Athleague is dripping in heroicism. A similar resistance is underway in other parts of the county and region. But there is something about Athleague, this homely village that was ambushed by the floods in 2009, that fought back, and that is now under threat again.

And yet you are left with a clear sense that no matter what nature does, the people are beyond being defeated.

2 YEARS AGO From Paul Healy’s column: A boost for Boyle Ah that Michael Ring is a mighty man for rural Ireland all the same. I have very fond childhood memories of our family visiting Lough Key Forest Park. It was epic in its heyday, then it fell into some ruin, then the great comeback was launched. Thanks to great work by people in the local community, assisted by various state agencies and such bodies, the Forest Park is thriving again. Now Minister Ring has coughed up €500,000 of taxpayers’ money for the development of a cycleway from Lough Key Forest Park & Activity Centre to Boyle Town. This is precisely what was needed; a link between the town and the great tourist facility itself. It will surely benefit the town and hopefully inspire some existing business people there or new entrepreneurs to provide further facilities/services in the historic town.

Local groups invited to apply for Clár funding

Local TDs have highlighted the fact that new measures are contained in the 2020 CLÁR Programme which will benefit rural communities in this area.

Applications are being sought from local groups under the Clár programme to support community initiatives such as meals on wheels, transport for cancer patients, improved pedestrian safety especially around schools and the development or enhancement of community recreation areas, says Denis Naughten TD. The request for applications was announced by Minister Michael Ring and applications for 90% funding must be submitted to the Department of Rural Affairs by 28th August 2020.

Fine Gael TD for Sligo-Leitrim, Frank Feighan, said: “The supports provided through CLÁR have been tailored this year to help rural communities to respond to the new Covid-19 environment”.

CLÁR is one element of a €30 million package of coordinated and complementary supports that is being launched by Minister Ring as part of his Department’s Rural Development Investment Programme.

The other elements of the programme will be the Town and Village Renewal Scheme and the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.

CLÁR provides funding for small-scale infrastructural projects in rural areas that have suffered significant levels of population decline.

The measures being funded under the 2020 CLÁR programme are – Measure 1: Schools/Community Safety measures (expanded in 2020); Measure 2: Community Recreation Areas (new in 2020); Measure 3: Community Wellbeing Supports, comprising Meals on Wheels and linked services (new in 2020) & Mobility and Cancer Care Transport.

New ASD Unit for Abbey Community College – Feighan

Fine Gael TD Frank Feighan, left, has announced that the Abbey Community College secondary school in Boyle has received Ministerial approval this week for the construction of a new two-classroom ASD Unit at the school along with the conversion of an old school classroom into a new home economics room.

Funding for the project has been approved under the Additional Accommodation Scheme administered by the Department of Education and Skills.

Deputy Feighan said: “I am delighted for the students, parents and teaching staff at Abbey Community College Boyle that this development has now been sanctioned and I look forward to this additional accommodation being made available to the students of the school”.

Ancient boat discovered in local lake ‘may be thousands of years old’ < PAUL HEALY

A log boat which was recently found by a 12-year-old Lisacul boy could date back thousands of years. Archaeologists will scrutinise the ancient boat over the coming weeks.

The exciting discovery was made by Cathal McDonagh of Lisacul, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon when he went paddling in a lake beside the family home.

Cathal’s mum, Eileen, told the Roscommon People: “Cathal just went for a walk down to the lake (Cloonacolly)…he had his wellies on, and did some paddling. Then he felt something under his foot, he knew it was more than a log. He came straight back up to the house and was very excited about it!”

Cathal’s family – his brother Aonghus (15), sister Róisín (13), and parents Eileen and Peter – went to see for themselves what Cathal had encountered.

It was apparent to them that a substantial object was in the water. “We could feel the outline of it” Eileen says. At this point the family didn’t realise that it was an ancient boat. The vessel, still underwater, was laden down with sand. Seeing it, much less extracting it from the water, would take considerable effort, and time.

“After several attempts we were able to scoop out the sand with our hands. But it was a slow exercise, and we were being careful, treating it with care. Then last week, we went back down and this time we brought a

ratchet strap. Cathal and his dad manoeuvred the strap under the structure and were able to dislodge it”.

When they were finally able to remove it from the water, they realised that it was an old log boat, which is in remarkably good condition.

The McDonaghs reported the discovery to the Underwater Archaeology Unit (part of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht). Initial feedback suggests that it is a log boat which could date from thousands of years ago, perhaps from the Neolithic Age (which began 12,000 years ago) or from the Medieval Period (5th to the 15th century). As Covid-19 restrictions ease, the boat will be examined by archaeologists.

Although the discovery is extremely exciting, and such discoveries are quite rare, there is a history of boats such as this one turning up on the lake in question! Records show that two ‘dug-out canoes’ were also found in Cloonacolly Lough in circa 1922!

As to this more recent discovery, the McDonagh family are now looking forward to finding out more about the historic vessel which has been hidden away through the centuries, only to emerge back into the spotlight during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Eileen says: “We have now submerged the boat under water again, in order to protect it. We are looking forward to when the archaeologists can call and examine it. It will be interesting to find out everything about it!”

FRANK SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION Sunday, 7 June 2020 We often begin Mass with the prayer from today’s Epistle: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you”.

We praise the God who has revealed Himself as a Trinity, a communion of persons.

Communion with the Trinity is the goal of our worship – and the purpose of the salvation history that begins in the Bible and continues in the Eucharist and sacraments of the Church.

We see the beginnings of God’s self-revelation in today’s First Reading, as He passes before Moses and cries out His holy name. Israel had sinned in worshipping the golden calf (see Exodus 32). But God does not condemn them to perish.

Instead, He proclaims His mercy and faithfulness to His covenant.

God loved Israel as His firstborn son among the nations (see Exodus 4:22).

Through Israel – heirs of His covenant with Abraham—God planned to reveal Himself as the Father of all nations (see Genesis 22:18).

The memory of God’s covenant testing of Abraham – and Abraham’s faithful obedience – lies behind today’s Gospel.

In commanding Abraham to offer his only beloved son (see Genesis 22:2, 12, 16), God was preparing us for the fullest possible revelation of His love for the world.

As Abraham was willing to offer Isaac, God did not spare His own Son but handed Him over for us all (see Romans 8:32).

In this, He revealed what was only disclosed partially to Moses – that His kindness continues for a thousand generations, that He forgives our sin, and that He takes us back as His very own people (see Deuteronomy 4:20; 9:29).

Jesus humbled himself to die in obedience to God’s will. And for this, the Spirit of God raised Him from the dead (see Romans 8:11), and gave Him a name above every name (see Philippians 2:8–10).

This is the name we glorify in today’s Responsorial – the name of our Lord, the God who is Love (see 1 John 4;8, 16).

Brendan Bowyer was a true genius, and Ireland’s King of entertainment Our columnist fondly remembers Brendan Bowyer and the Royal Showband, “the Beatles of the Irish scene, drawing huge crowds to every venue where they played…”

It’s just after 10 am on the Bank Holiday Monday, and my phone tells me that it’s already 22 degrees out here in Creggs. In my mind I am trying to imagine what things would be like if this Covid thing hadn’t happened.

The beaches all over the country would be choc-a-bloc, there would be traffic jams everywhere, ice cream vans would be flat out selling their 99s and their choc ices, and in the evening the pubs would be wedged – with people drinking on the footpaths too. There would be music filling the air, and all would be perfect with the world.

However, it was not to be, and maybe it will be a while before we can enjoy all those things again. But the truth is that it is not that bad being out here in the sunshine in Creggs. We are now at 23 degrees, so it will soon be time to put on the sun cream, hit for the garden, and soak up the summer sun. And so you would say that

all is good in my world – and mostly it is – but I have one thing bothering me on this glorious morning.

Over the weekend, Brendan Bowyer, one of Ireland’s greatest entertainers – maybe the greatest for more than sixty years – passed on to his eternal reward. Unless I missed it, there was no huge acknowledgement of his wonderful contribution to the Irish music scene. When Big Tom, Joe Dolan, Larry Cunningham, Brendan Grace, and other superstars of the Irish entertainment scene left this mortal world, the news was everywhere, all over the television and the papers, and there were tributes on every media form – and deservedly so. But so far, I have seen only an occasional article about the Waterford man, who in my opinion was the undoubted King of Irish music for so many years.

Way back in my young days, Brendan and the Royal Showband were the Beatles of the Irish scene, drawing huge crowds to every venue where they played, Brendan being mobbed by young ladies, and his Elvis impersonations literally driving the crowds mad. His singing voice, which was classically trained, was just wonderful, and coupled with his good looks, his athleticism, and I suppose his raw sex appeal (to women mostly), he was the complete package, and long before the rest of them followed in his footsteps, he was laying the foundations for everyone else.

On the recording front, his Elvis covers were absolutely brilliant, and of course The Hucklebuck (from 1965) became a massive hit. To this day it is played at functions everywhere. But for sheer quality, his version of Jerusalem is my favourite of all his songs, showcasing his wonderful voice at its absolute maximum. As with so many Irish public figures, he had a long battle with alcohol, which to his credit he eventually won. Indeed he was very open in later life about his struggles with drink. For me, Brendan Bowyer was a true genius; wonderful in full flight on stage, and the real King of Ireland, and a huge loss to Irish entertainment.

Once upon a time as a very young boy, I saw the Royal’s bus pass through Creggs on its way to the Sound of Music in Glenamaddy, and to this day I can remember the huge thrill it was just to see their vehicle, which really shows how much I idolised them. Tom Dunphy, the other big name with both the Royal, and subsequently The Big 8, died in a car crash in Dromod in 1975, and it took Brendan a long time to get over the tragic loss of his friend.

His time, at the age of 81, has now come, and I hope that Brendan and Tom are now Hucklebucking together, wherever they might be. Farewell Brendan…thanks for so many wonderful memories. You were the first and probably the best, and may you (and your hips) rest in peace.

Whisper it…a ‘little’ update on leprechauns It’s funny what can catch a person’s eye during lockdown. Some day last week I came across a man called Kevin Woods who hails from Carlingford, Co. Louth. He tells us he is Ireland’s last Leprechaun Whisperer.

I won’t deny that my first reaction was one of total scepticism (and so was

my second and third), but there was also no denying the seriousness and sincerity with which Mr. Woods talked about his beloved leprechauns and how he communicates with Carraig, the elder of the remaining 236 surviving Little People. Legend has it that in 1989 a leprechaun suit, bones and

gold coins were found on Carlingford Mountain.

Three years later Kevin Woods found more gold coins on a wall and (he says) those coins enabled him to communicate with the last of the leprechauns. In 2009, he got them protected under European law, and – like it or not, or believe it or

not – Kevin Woods is Ireland’s last Leprechaun Whisperer.

I would love to think that they are still out there, but now that I am heading for my 70th year on this earth, wouldn’t you think I should have come across one by now? Here’s hoping!

A golden sporting moment…

On to sport now, and I am up to No. 5 in my all-time favourite sporting memories, and this time it’s back to rugby, and it’s the Grand Slam winning game against Wales in Cardiff in 2009, when Ireland took their first slam in 61 years in one of the most nail-biting finishes to a game that I have ever seen.

Imagine the scene – we are leading by two points as the clock goes into the last minute, when Paddy Wallace is penalised

for being on the wrong side of a ruck. The kick is from 48 metres, straight in front of the goal, and as Stephen Jones lines it up, millions of Irish hearts all over the world are in mouths. He hits the ball cleanly, and time stands still as it sails towards the posts looking every inch a winner, until at the last moment it loses a bit of momentum, and drops under the crossbar, where Geordan Murphy catches it and touches it down,

before sending the ball flying into the safety of the crowd. Just touching it down would have done, but kicking the ball out made doubly sure, and all hell broke loose everywhere. We kissed total strangers, hugged anyone we could find, and literally went crazy.

I was lucky enough to be in the Cardiff Stadium for the Golden Moment, and it is a memory to be treasured for all time, and another worthy inclusion in my top ten.

And finally … Mary’s big day Finally for this week, out here in Creggs, Mary Kelly had a big birthday on Monday, 1st of June. In the new lockdown tradition it was honoured by a drive-by celebration. Mary is one of those people that communities are lucky to have, and there is nothing that happens that she is not involved in. However, along with all her local demands, she is deeply involved in fundraising for loads of other charities like Cancer Care West and the Lourdes Invalid Fund, and the mystery is how she fits everything into her hectic schedule.

Anyway, congratulations Mary on your big day, hope you had a good one, and here’s to many, many more.

You share your birthday with the one and only Tom Connolly (who is a year older), so some day in the future ye could have a joint party.

He said the figures show winter finishers selling cattle have taken a battering on beef price in the order of €200 per head, when compared to the pre-Brexit and preCovid-19 prices.

“Without a direct payment to make

up for these price losses, many winter finishers will not survive after this spring, which has been financially horrendous,” he said.

Over the nine-week period from 16th of March-17th of May, the figures show that the Covid-19 related losses were €21.22m, or about €2.5m per week.

On top of this, finishers have incurred Brexit related price cuts and calculated from 1st of January-17th of May. These amount to €89.8m, or about €4.5m per week.

TikTok users recording pranks with farm machinery are a disgrace – IFA

IFA President Tim Cullinan has hit out at people who are recording pranks with farm machinery for uploading on the TikTok social media channel.

“This practice is grossly irresponsible and is an accident waiting to happen.

I am disgusted that people could be so casual and

have no regard for the dangers involved in what they are doing,” he said.

With eight farm fatalities already this year, Tim Cullinan said those carrying on like this should take a hard

look at themselves.

“Too often, people are not willing to act responsibly and identify the risks,” he said.

“All farmers and contractors need to make it clear to their employees that engaging in these practices is a sackable offence,” he said.

IFA concern on suspension of access to Chinese market IFA President Tim Cullinan, right, said the suspension of access to the Chinese market was disappointing and that it must be resolved quickly.

“This is a technical issue resulting from the discovery of a case of Atypical BSE in a fourteen-year old cow in this country.

Under the protocol, Ireland is required to submit a detailed epidemiological report,” he said.

“Given the nature of this case, once the report is reviewed by the Chinese authorities, there should be no delay in regaining access,” he said.

An Atypical case does not affect Ireland’s current OIE controlled risk status or our progress towards negligible risk status.

The late Canon Peader Lavin: An Appreciation < DANNY BURKE

It was with deep sadness that I heard of the death of my good friend Canon Peadar Lavin which took place at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Roscommon on Friday, the 17th of April.

We have been friends for nearly sixty years. I got to know him first through the GAA and in the last thirtyseven years on our annual trip to Lourdes on the Elphin Diocese Pilgrimage.

I held him in high esteem. He was a real gentleman and a saintly priest and always a good man to give advice, aside from his religious duties. He loved the GAA and was a true Gael. He did trojan work for his club (St. Ronan’s) over the years, both as an administrator and training teams in all grades.

He held many positions within the club and for many years was a delegate to the North Board, County Board and County Conventions, where his contribution was always straight to the point and much valued (as a trainer).

He was of the same mind as myself when I was training Castlerea teams, which was simple – move the ball quickly and get into the danger zone.

While he trained many teams in the club in all grades, including the County Junior Championship winning teams in 1962 and 1976 and Intermediate County Championship winnings team of 1986, he was very proud of the 1962 team because it was the first junior title that came to the club.

There were some great footballers on that team…

Hugh Lang, Seamus Sharkey, John Benson, Michael Killoran and Johnny and Tony Lenehan, just to mention a few. They beat a hotly-fancied St. Mary’s Kilmurray team (by 5-9 to 0-1) who fielded ten of their 1959 championship winning team in the county semi-final.

We had many a bit of banter over the years when Castlerea teams I was involved with would be playing St. Ronan’s, and indeed when refer-

eeing matches that St. Ronan’s were involved in, he would let the odd shout out at me (and he was often right at times) but we always were best friends after the games.

Indeed, self-praise is no praise, but he had great respect for me, and always had gave me credit for what I had done for my club and for Roscommon football and he would always talk of great players that I produced, namely

Tom Heneghan, Adrian O’Sullivan, Jimmy Finnegan, Padraic Shallow, Mickey Freyne and Padraic O’Callaghan.

He was in Castlerea Church for the 2000 Easter Penitential Rights, hearing confession. He was in the seat in the centre aisle of the church. I had not seen him for a while so I said that I would go to him to hear my confession.

When it was my turn, I arrived beside him. “Oh

God” he said, “Danny Burke, how’s the football going?” That ‘confession’ lasted for a good while – and then he heard my confession. I met two elderly ladies on my postal deliveries the next day and they said that you must have got an awful penance, he kept you so long!

He was also Vice-Chairman of the Roscommon County Minor Board.

We were selectors when Roscommon won the

Connacht Minor Final in 1975. He was very proud that day but was disappointed when Kerry beat us well in the All-Ireland semi-final. He always said that the team had an off day in that game, and he was proven right. In 1978, when Roscommon beat Kerry in the All-Ireland U-21 Final at Hyde Park, nine members of the 1975 minor team lined out that day. They were Peter Dolan, Seamus Tighe,

Seamus Hayden, Richard O’Beirne, Tony McManus, Michael Finneran, Kevin Murray, Harry Crowley and Gerry Emmett. The following members of the 1975 panel were subs: Aidan McHugh, Michael Dolphin, Greg McCrann, Liam McDonnell, Jimmy Costello and Adrian De Paoli.

Canon Lavin loved going to Lourdes with the Elphin Diocese Pilgrimage. After the ceremonies, he would always go to the hospital to visit our sick pilgrims. Indeed we would have many a GAA debate over a cup of coffee or tea at the hospital or hotel, with myself, Phonsie Tully, Tim Donnelly, Dessie McLoughlin and the late Liam Bracken, Jimmy Murray and Gerry Mahon.

He was also very much involved in the GAA in St. Mary’s Secondary School in Boyle. So, Canon Peadar, as I bid you farewell, I want to say thanks for the memories, until we meet again.

‘The hay, straw and oats and young pigs were sold at the back of the Harrison Hall’ Before his death in 1953, George N. Geraghty wrote extensively about his memories of life in Roscommon Town (and environs) in the early years of the 20th century…the Roscommon People is pleased to serialise these fascinating memories Market Day in Roscommon Market day was Saturday and in those days brisk business was carried on. In fact, most of the business houses depended on the markets for trade. The hay, straw and oats and young pigs were sold at the back of the Harrison Hall; potatoes, turnips and young calves in front of the Hall down the Main Street, young lambs and white cabbage from Athlone when in season. Then there was ‘The Cheap Jack’. He had his pitch opposite Thomas McDermott’s meat stall; his spring cart was converted into a platform surrounded by a timber frame and covered over with a tarpaulin. He sold all sorts of second hand clothing, boots and harness; he was a very fluent speaker and did a very good trade. Needless to say the shopkeepers did not like him.

Opposite Mrs. James Harlow’s along the wall were displayed for sale dash churns, all painted blue with black hoops, turf barrows, turf creels, straw beehives, tubs, feeding troughs, earthenware pitchers, and milk crocks, and wheelbarrows, and ladders.

Well those market days are gone and more is the pity, the people would not start for home until nightfall, and there was always a variety of street musicians to entertain them.

Tom (Gunner) Walsh had charge of the weighing scales in front of the Harrison Hall, and Henry Hanly had charge of the scales at the back of the Hall.

The Boot and Shoe Trade This trade was well catered for. There were quite a number of shoemakers in town. The Fenn Bros., Luke and Jim in Abbey St.; Bernard Malone in Church St., (now I.P. Dolan’s meat shop); Dan Harrison at the corner of Church and Main St.; John McDermott, Willie Flanagan, Paddy Raftery, Johnnie Garvey and Martin Fallon in Castle St. The handmade boots in those days were made from the very best of leather and workmanship was first class. You were sure of a dry foot in any weather conditions,

even if you had to wait for months before you got them. They were worth waiting for.

The Tailoring Trade Before the ready-made clothing appeared in the drapery shops the tailors were always kept busily engaged. Henry Fallon in Church St. (where Miss Fox has a sweet shop now). He had a constant staff of five or six tailors, and at times had several journeymen tailors engaged. James Connor lived opposite Fallon’s. He also had a few men working constant. Then Joe Egan and his sons Willie and Joe, also in Church St. opposite the late Edward Keogh’s shop. John Hanly in Castle St. Edward Gormley in Henry St. and his brother James in Abbey St.; as in the boot trade you had to wait a long time for a fit on. The tailors always seemed to have more orders than they could cope with.

Coursing When I read of the high prices paid for greyhounds nowadays, my thoughts are carried back to the days when the coursing meetings were held at Castlecoote. Like Race days, the coursing was looked forward to as a great day’s outing. It was surprising the interest that was taken in it. Rich and poor alike gathered at Castlecoote. They came on sidecars, brakes, traps, and carts and on foot. The day before the trains brought a great crowd to town.

Dog owners and trainers and ‘Bookies’. The draw was held the night before in P.C. Mitchell’s Hotel (now Dr. Kilmartin’s in Market Square). The Roscommon Dog ‘Fans’ would assemble outside the hotel, all anxious to learn how the draw fared with the Roscommon dogs. At the time Roscommon could boast of having the finest greyhounds in Ireland. Jimmie Dillon, who lived on the Convent road, had a dog called Harvey Duff. He was a big white and black dog, and he won the open thirty-two dog stakes two years in succession, beating all the crack dogs that came from all parts of Ireland, even as far away as Belfast. Another great dog was ‘Mickey Free’, owned by Thomas Doran of Lanesboro St. He won several good stakes. I saw Mick The Miller and he was an exact picture of Mickey Free, same fawn colour and make. Michael Finlay owned some splendid greyhounds, as did Pat Banahan. Pat and his brother Joe kept a Grocery and Bar shop. Michael Hanly went into possession when the Banahans gave up. At present it is a barber shop. A Mr. Coote owned the land where the coursing was held. He was a very good sportsman. He gave the use of the land where the coursing was held and also the hares free of charge and he acted slipper himself.

The ground was ideal for coursing, the hares had plenty of cover on a big stretch of bog, which bog was bounded at one end by the River Suck. Forty or fifty men were engaged for the day to act as ‘Beaters’ armed with long ash plants. They started from left and right beating the furze. The hares would not attempt to cross the River Suck. So the only means of escape for them was the outlet to the upland, where the slipper was waiting behind a canvas screen with two dogs, and so that course started, and so it went on all day. One man in charge of the ‘Beaters’ would blow on a whistle when the dogs were slipped, so the Beaters would stand still until the next two dogs were in slips.

Carbonara Recipe

Ingredients * 3 eggs * 55g of Parmesan cheese * 115g of chopped rashers * 1.5 tablespoons of vegetable oil * 2 tablespoons of double cream * 400g of spaghetti (four servings) * Pinch of salt and pepper

Method Heat some water in a pot until it boils. Then add your pasta, oil and salt (to prevent it from sticking together).

While the pasta cooks, beat the eggs in a bowl. Add the cream, salt, pepper and half the cheese and beat again.

Put the oil in the frying pan. Add the chopped rashers and fry it for a few minutes until it is cooked.

Cook the pasta for about 12 to 15 minutes until it is cooked but still firm and drain it.

Tip the pasta back into the saucepan. Add the egg mixture and rashers. Stir well and cook for a few minutes.

Serve with some more Parmesan shavings on top – and enjoy!

The Class of 2020 is a class that stands apart, They didn’t think it would end like this on the day they made a start.

Then one day it happened an announcement it was made, There would be no exam at all they’d get a predictive grade.

It was hoped that through the years that they had done their best Because all the work that they had done was going to be assessed.

Some were disappointed that there would be no exam, Others were delighted and they couldn’t give a damn.

Some wished they had done better when they went and did the mocks And others found that it was time that they pulled up their socks.

People they are wondering how will this plan work out But with the willing teachers it will succeed no doubt.

Icing * 225g of icing sugar sieved * 75g of butter of margarine * 1 tablespoon of instant coffee dissolved in one teaspoon of boiling water, cooled * 1 tablespoon of milk Method Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas 4. Grease 2 cake tins.

Place all the ingredients for the cake – flour, butter/ margarine, sugar, eggs and coffee – into a mixing bowl and beat until mixture is smooth.

Transfer to the prepared tins and bake for about 2530 minutes.

Cake is baked when top is gently pressed and it springs back.

Remove from tin and cool on a wire tray.

When completely cool, make icing by beating ingredients together until smooth.

Sandwich the two cakes with half the filling and spread remaining on top of the cake.

Enjoy – and add walnuts on top if desired!

8 YEARS AGO Brigid’s ladies retain title Centre Point Autos SLFC Final St Brigid’s 2-15 Strokestown 2-8 St Brigid’s retained their Senior Football Championship crown for a third year in a row when they overcame a spirited Strokestown team in Knockcroghery on Saturday evening last.

The game was effectively over as a contest at halftime at which stage the reigning champions had established a commanding 13-point lead. However Strokestown, in fairness to them, battled valiantly thereafter and made it a more competitive game during the second period, although they were powerless against a St Brigid’s side laced with quality and experience.

The first half was a very one-sided encounter indeed. St. Brigid’s were in flying form and goals from Cliodhna McHugh in the 11th minute and Sinead Taylor in the 18th minute saw them race into a considerable lead at the break – 2-8 to 0-2.

Strokestown into final U-21 Division One semi-final replay Strokestown 0-17 Boyle 0-12 Strokestown will meet Padraig Pearses in the U-21 final on Sunday next after this cracking semi-final replay in Boyle on Sunday. Strokestown edged out a gallant Boyle side in the end, but it was a superb game brimful of excellent football.

Boyle missed their talisman Donie Smith, who was suspended, and it was Strokestown’s edge in attack that decided the game. Strokestown got their noses in front early and they held on for most of the game. Colin and Cathal Compton were prominent in the early stages and with Diarmuid McGann accurate from placed balls, Strokestown led by 0-6 to 0-2 by the 20th minute.

However, points from Mark O’Connor and the impressive Enda Smith left only two points in the game but then points from Thomas Hanley and Thomas Corcoran left Strokestown four ahead at the break.

Tadhg Lowe and Enda Smith were on fire for Boyle but the just couldn’t reel Strokestown in.

Points from both midfielders reduced the margin to two again by the 42nd minute, and again the margin was two with 12 minutes to go.

McGann and Corcoran pointed to open the fourpoint gap again, and although Enda Smith reduced the lead to three with four minutes to go, it was Strokestown’s day and now they play in their second U-21 final in a row.

5 YEARS AGO Athleague-Tremane retain crown G&G Electric JHC Final Athleague-Tremane 3-15 Padraig Pearses 2-10 Athleague-Tremane retained their JHC crown in Athleague last week when they had just a little too much guile and class for a gallant Pearses side in a very enjoyable and well-contested final.

The first half was a very lively affair. David Connell grabbed the first goal, but Pearses replied with a goal from Tomas Sweeney. And when the same player scored his and his side’s second goal, they led briefly. But ET Murray was on song with frees for the defending champions and three points from him ensured that the sides went in level at half-time, 1-8 to 2-5.

Warren Boyle and Frank Carr were playing well and Athleague-Tremane soon assumed control.

Sean Mahony scored an opportunist goal to give his side breathing space. Pearses battled away gamely but the game was settled as a contest with 10 minutes to go when Shane McGeeney scored his side’s third goal, which left them six ahead. It was a brave battle from Pearse’s but they had to give best on the day.

Best for the winners were Warren Boyle, Frank Carr, ET Murray, Niall Connolly and Colm Moran.

For Pearses, Tomas Sweeney Gavin Downey, Shane Naughton and goalkeeper Sean Dunne were most prominent.

4 YEARS AGO Community Games enjoys record year!

The 2016 Community Games Festival, in association with the HSE, proved a hit again as recordbreaking attendance numbers were recorded.

Over 7,000 participants flocked to Athlone AIT armed with lots of support over the last two weekends despite the inclement weather.

Sport was played, races were run but most importantly lifelong friendships were made. The festival witnessed winners all round as in the eyes of Community Games, everyone is a winner with participation and enjoyment being key.

across Ireland make this national festival a unique and memorable experience.

3 YEARS AGO Rossies crush Limerick to reach semis Lidl Ladies NFL Division 3 Roscommon 3-11 Limerick 2-2 Roscommon’s great run in the Ladies National League so far saw Michael Finneran’s charges secure a semi-final spot with a very impressive 12-point win against Limerick in Kilmallock last Sunday.

It was Limerick who started best with two goals from Mairead Kavanagh in the opening ten minutes.

But it wasn’t long before Roscommon hit back and goals from Jenny Higgins and Natalie McHugh before half-time saw Roscommon ahead by a point at the mid-way mark, 2-2 to Limerick’s 2-1.

Roscommon totally dominated on the restart and they scored some super points from Martina Freyne, Natalie McHugh, Jenny Downey and Shiela Brady and when the third goal arrived in the 42nd minute it was game over and Roscommon were in the playoffs with a game to spare.

Retired Irish Independent GAA journalist Martin Breheny made a return to the newspaper last week when he chose a ‘Best 20 Players of the Past 50 Years’ from each county, province, and nationally. Needless to say his selections generated much debate.

While any list will always be controversial, the omission of two All-Stars (Enon Gavin and Gerry Connellan) raised a lot of eyebrows – and justifiably so. Many fans also

feel that too many of the team of the late 1970s and early 1980s were included, with no current players selected – despite Roscommon having played in the last four Connacht senior finals, and winning two.

In the Connacht Top 20, there were only four Roscommon players named. They were Dermot Earley (No. 2), Tony McManus (No. 7), Harry Keegan (No. 8) and Pat Lindsay (No. 9). No Roscommon player was named on the 20 best players nationally.

Premier League returns next month < SEAMUS DUKE

Sport is inching its way back on to our calendar with the return this week of horse racing in the UK, with the sport back here in Ireland from next Monday (at Naas). In soccer, the Premier League will resume behind closed doors on June the 17th, with the TV companies committed to showing every single one of the 92 remaining games live.

Some of the games will be played at neutral venues, on police advice.

Liverpool need just two victories to secure their first title in 30 years.

The Championship looks set to

resume on June 20th after a vote of the clubs on Friday.

The soccer authorities in the UK will be encouraged by the smooth return of the Bundesliga in Germany which has seen three full rounds of games played behind closed doors and with no apparent problems.

GAA road map The situation with the GAA is less clear although the association says they will publish a ‘road map’ on a possible return to activity later this week. There is growing confidence that club facilities such as walking

tracks will be opened over the next couple of weeks.

A growing number of GAA personalities including Colm O’Rourke, Liam Sheedy, Colm Parkinson and others have been calling for a much quicker return to action than is planned, particularly for underage players.

The GAA have also said that they are hopeful that they will be allowed to hold the popular Cúl Camps in July, under strict regulations.

Discussions are ongoing. It is hoped that it may be possible to hold the camps in larger venues outside, with social distancing rules in operation.

General News Irish racing returns next week behind closed doors and following on from Naas on Monday the action will come thick and fast with eight all Flat fixtures over the subsequent seven days. Leopardstown race on Tuesday, Navan Wednesday, Gowran Park Thursday, The Curragh stages the first Classics, the 2000 Guineas, on Friday and the 1000 Guineas on Saturday. Leopardstown race again on the Sunday before both Fairyhouse and Roscommon stage the action on Monday June 15. All tracks are watering this week. We will look at the 2 Classic races next week.

There is an entry of 236 for 7 races at Naas on Monday with only 14 in the Woodland Sprint Stakes where quality takes precedent over quantity, 10 of the entries are rated over 100. The going at Naas is Good to Firm, Firm in places with watering taking place on a daily basis and will continue until Monday.

Declarations for the meeting will be available on Saturday.

Paddy Power have announced that they will sponsor next weekend’s Lincolnshire Handicap and will add its name to the Rockingham Handicap on 28th June, The Scurry on 18th July, Irish Cambridgeshire on 28th August and the Irish Cesarewitch on 11th October, while they have agreed to continue to sponsor the Group 2 Minstrel Stakes taking place on Irish Oaks Day. Racing resumed in the UK on Monday at Newcastle and only 2 clear and one joint favourite won giving the layers opening advantage. There were two Irish jockeys on the mark with Oisin Murphy winning the 8th for Michael Stout and David Egan, son of John Egan and Sandra Hughes, the last for Roger Varian. David, champion apprentice two seasons ago, has relations living on the hill of Scrine outside Roscommon.

On Tuesday on the dirt at Kempton Frankie Dettori, who missed Monday, had one ride on Galsworthy for John Gosden and duly obliged at the short price of 4/5. Ryan Moore also rode his first winner on Michael Stoute’s First Receiver at 11/8f.

Three Group 1 races take place

at Newmarket this weekend and Aidan O’Brien has 2 horses of the 7 entered in the first, the Coronation Cup tomorrow, Anthony Van Dyke, who has his ground, is ridden by Ryan Moore and Broome by James Doyle. They face 3 very useful English opponents in the favourite Ghaiyaath, Defoe and Stradivarius.

Frankie Dettori to get a sweet tune out of Stradivarius and beat O’Brien’s Derby hero Anthony Van Dyke.

There are 4 Irish challengers, all from Ballymore, taking on 11 for the 2000 Guineas on Saturday all ridden by English jockeys dur to Covid-19 restrictions in this country with Arizona Ryan Moore, Wichita Frankie Dettori, Royal Dornoch Tom Marquand and New World Tapestry Alan Kirby. They will have their work cut out to upset the unbeaten, in 6 runs, Pinaturbo.

Charlie Appleby’s 3-Y-O won the Dewhurst here and the National Stakes at the Curragh last season under William Buick, who takes the mount again on Saturday and is odds on.

Again, on Sunday in the 1000 Guineas there are 4 Irish runners 3 from O’Brien’s yard, Love, Peaceful and So Wonderful with Millisle representing Jessica Harrington and ridden by Oisin Murphy, who was booked last week, because Shane Foley would have to quarantine for 2 weeks on his return and miss the Irish Classics next week. Note Cieren Fallon, son of Kieran, has his first ride in a Classic on Les Hogues in this race and could be value at 16/1 following Dream And Do’s win in the French equivalent last Sunday. Dream And Do beat her by a neck last season in Maisons-Laffitte last season. Virgin Media 1 will broadcast live coverage on Friday, Saturday and Sunday which will include both English 1000 and 2000 Guineas as well as the Coronation Stakes which has been re-routed from Epsom.

In the US the Belmont Stakes, traditionally the final leg of the US Triple Crown, will now be run as the opening race on the 20th June at a reduced distance of 1m1f, instead of its usual 1m4f, and take place behind closed doors at Belmont Park. In its new slot, the $1 million Classic precedes the Kentucky Derby on September 5, four weeks ahead of the Preakness on October 3.

(Ward actually played League of Ireland soccer for a couple of seasons!). The future was bright.

REFLECTIONS ON SPORTING INSPIRATIONS

Looking back, is it any wonder that rugby wasn’t our first, or second, or third, sporting love? It just wasn’t there much…

45 years ago, rugby, in as much as it registered with us at all, was played by a small minority, primarily (it seemed) in urban areas, mostly (but not entirely) by the so-called professional classes. Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me, but it seemed almost like a closed world, certainly completely lacking the communitywide inclusiveness of the GAA. Don’t blame us – the kids of 1970s’ rural Ireland – if we didn’t live and breathe for the oval ball. Rugby just wasn’t there! At least not particularly visibly!

So it could never be our first love – you’re not likely to fall in love if you’re not sharing the same world.

And back then, rugby seemed to belong to a different world to ours.

In Rooskey, we knew there was a rugby club in Longford, but we knew hardly anything about it. We were only aware of it from the weekly half-page summary in the Longford Leader, above the squash and tennis round-ups. We really only properly took interest when the rugby club in Longford started running discos at the weekend. My friends and I went to a few of those discos – smooching up to the bar counter when there was the first terrifying sign of downward movement on the shutters – but I don’t suppose that qualifies as taking an interest in rugby.

Growing up in Rooskey in the early 1970s, we simply weren’t exposed to this sport (later, I would discover that there were small but proud rugby strongholds around the region).

But things change. Ever so gradually, through the endeavours of the handful of local clubs, and a gradually growing media profile, rugby began to feature more in our lives. We noticed this change in Rooskey when a few of our GAA/soccer lads joined Longford Rugby Club! Now, all of a sudden, we had to share some of our best players. There were reports of towering performances by the Dynamo Rooskey/Kilglass Gaels’ lads in the Longford rugby colours, mutterings too about fixtures clashing.

“They have what on Sunday morning? A rugby game?!” Reason tended to prevail. Now, different worlds were merging. Now, rugby was here.

Our local lads were playing the game. Rugby was actually becoming an option for young men. Perhaps without us realising it, the scope of our sporting imagination was broadening.

Before we knew it, rugby was becoming a credible contender for our affections. It had a lot of catching up to do, mind you. We were in love with the GAA and soccer – and maybe one or two others – we weren’t going to be easily won over by this new rival for our interest. But, make no mistake about it, rugby was muscling in and looking for the next dance.

And whatever about the earnest efforts of the club volunteers in Longford and Carrick-onShannon, the really serious flirting was being done by Fred and Bill…

His name was Tony Rugby struck once a year, with devastating intent, over a five-week period or so. The Five

Introducing…Ollie What happened next rocked the Irish sporting world, arguably achieving Saipan-sized notoriety. In 1979, with Ireland touring Australia, the Irish selectors sensationally dropped Ward.

There is a suggestion that the powers that be weren’t keen on Ward’s celebrity status. Introducing…Ollie. Ollie was, and is, Ollie Campbell. After winning his first Irish cap in 1976, he’d been out of favour for three years. The decision to drop Ward in favour of Campbell stunned the rugby world, and was hugely controversial.

There may have been rugby politics imvolved.

Maybe the selectors simply saw Ward, for all his great talent, as too much of a maverick. Campbell delivered magnificently, and held the jersey.

In 1982, he scored all 21 points as Ireland defeated Scotland at Lansdowne Road, to win the Triple crown. I was there. I hope Tony understands.

The Campbell/Ward dilemma was seismic, with fans and the media divided. An attempt to accommodate both men in the same team was short-lived.

Truth is, the decision to choose and continue with Campbell turned out to be absolutely justified. He became an Irish rugby great, a legend of the game. Tony Ward never fully recovered from the saga.

Nations Championship (now the Six Nations) simply bulldozed into our consciousness, then fluttered its eyelids at us, one glorious Saturday after another.

A holiday romance, to the soundtrack of Fred and Bill. Then it was gone, leaving us exhausted but happy, before we invariably returned – bashfully – to soccer and GAA. Fred and Bill? For us, they were the voices of rugby…creating a special atmosphere, wooing us into this world. In truth, I include Fred mostly on patriotic grounds; well, he was our voice, here in Ireland. He was the RTE commentator, and a good one, even if his style was a bit too laidback. But Bill was something else. Bill McClaren, a Scottish commentator with the BBC, had a voice from the Heavens, and was the intoxicating sound of the Five Nations, the man who electrified the otherwise dank Saturdays of spring. You almost wanted it to be raining and miserable outside, as thirty mostly beefy, stern-faced men plodded on to a mucky pitch… and then the unique voice of the wonderful Bill McClaren took over, warming our spirits, entrancing us with his vocabulary and passion. With Bill in charge for the afternoon, guiding us through the contours of the game – its rolling drama – in his hypnotic tones, all was well with our world. Looking back, he was a hero of our youth.

And what of the Irish team? Now that we had discovered rugby, as relayed to us by these iconic commentators, it was high time we connected with the men in green. Were they any match for the dazzling Welsh, who seemed to be the Brazil of rugby?

I soon discovered that while we’d produced our share of artists – most notably the genius that was Mike Gibson – much of our rugby heritage was built on brawn, fighting spirit, a heroic ‘up and at them’ mentality. (Gibson played his last game for Ireland in 1979, at the age of 36, ending a wonderful career, almost all of which I had missed!). No team fancied coming to Dublin, the commentators assured us.

Come to Dublin and have 15 green warriors throw the kitchen sink at you, was the slightly patronising narrative. But could we even dream of replicating the flair so often exhibited by the Welsh, and the French too? Was there even the hint of a successor

to Gibson? Were we forever destined to be lionhearted Ireland when we won, and brave, plucky Ireland when we lost, with little enough subtlety in between? Was there anything else?

His name was Tony.

What could go wrong?

I can’t be sure where Tony Ward sits in the Irish rugby Hall of Fame, where he ranks in the ‘Greatest Players’ list. I am under no illusions – as gifted as he was, he might struggle to feature prominently.

The main reason for that is because most of our greatest ever players have come along during the professional era (another reason is because Ward only earned 19 caps). We have had unprecedented success in recent decades, with Grand Slam wins, triple crowns, several Six Nations’ titles, victory over the All Blacks, World No. 1 ranking(!)…and all of it against a backdrop of wonderful success in Europe at provincial level. This prolonged glory era has yielded (and been made possible by) our greatest ever players, a succession of magnificent sportsmen, including Brian O’Driscoll, Keith Wood, Paul O’Connell, Ronan O’Gara, Johnny Sexton and others.

But heroes don’t have to be the very best, or the most decorated…all they ‘have’ to do is claim a place in your heart, and live there for all time!

To my very young eyes, as I savoured this annual rugby fest on TV in the late 1970s, it seemed that just as Mike Gibson was retiring, the Gods had delivered a new genius: Tony Ward. The dashing outhalf simply took our breath away. Good-looking, charismatic, unpredictable, audacious…we couldn’t take our eyes off him. Now we had our own Phil Bennett, now we had some of that Welsh or Gallic flair, all wrapped in a green jersey, home-grown.

Ward made his Ireland debut in 1978. Now we had guile, intricacy, sidesteps, dummies, audacity! A performance against Wales in Cardiff will always live on in my memory, Ward setting up two tries with jinking runs. Do not adjust your set! Take note, Fred and Bill! Heroes…and friends Around 1986, having just recently retired from international rugby, the great Ollie Campbell arrived into our family pub in Rooskey. He’d been to a meeting in Hanley’s factory. I was star-struck, but recovered my composure well enough to beat Ollie Campbell in two games of pool (maybe I did it for Tony).

Ollie was a gentleman. I’ve never met Tony, not yet. Knowing him, he’s probably brilliant at pool too.

Tony and Ollie. We just happened to uncover two superstars who, for all their brilliance, would not fit into the same jersey. In that sense, we were a little bit cursed; but of course we were far more blessed. I idolised Ward. But they are both heroes. And they actually became great friends!

Rugby is now a great presence in our lives for several months each year, a far cry from our limited exposure to it in those pre-professional days.

International, provincial and club and schools’ success has thrilled us. Locally, we celebrate the great success story that is Creggs RFC. Nowadays, even though I can’t say I fully understand the intricacies of the game, I have a big place in my heart for rugby. From Bill McClaren to BOD, to my mate Ollie Campbell…to my hero Tony Ward, the man whose dancing feet all too briefly took our breath away.
