Quite apart from the challenge to public health, the Covid-19 pandemic is having a catastrophic impact on the local economy in Roscommon. The cancellation of all the high profile events that usually take place around this time of year, coupled with the closure of hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes and tourist attractions, has drained the local economy of countless millions of euro.

The cancellation of Roscommon Agricultural Show, which was due to take place in mid-August, has been confirmed (see page 5). It follows the cancellation of all St. Patrick’s Day parades in the county, the Easter Parades in Roscommon and Strokestown, the Roscommon Lamb Festival, Boyle

Arts Festival, all GAA matches and numerous other events.

Meanwhile, the tourism and food and drinks sector is still reeling from the devastating revenue losses of recent weeks and the uncertainty as to how and when recovery can begin.

Roscommon Racecourse Manager Michael Finneran told the Roscommon People that the first meeting of the season, scheduled for May 11th, is “very unlikely” to take place. When racing does resume, it will be behind closed doors for at least a month.

Speaking to the People on Wednesday, Deputy Denis Naughten said that when he met Taoiseach Leo Varadkar earlier that day, he had called for the easing of restrictions in counties which have lower incidence of Covid-19 than others.

As of midnight on April 26th, there were 141 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in County Roscommon.

My husband and I are going through a difficult time at the moment. My biggest worry is that he will sell our home behind my back.

He often threatens to do this and this would leave me homeless. He would simply live with his parents. He is very clever and made sure that our home is in his name only. I am very worried. Can he sell our home without my knowledge?

No, your husband may not legally sell your home without your knowledge or consent. The family home of a married couple is protected by specific legislation, namely, the Family Home Protection Act, 1976. Similar protection is provided for the shared home of civil partners by the civil partnership legislation.

The Family Home Protection Act prevents one spouse or civil partner from selling, mortgaging, leasing or transferring the family home without the written consent of the other spouse or civil partner. This applies regardless of whether the home is owned jointly by the married couple or civil partners or where the home is owned by just one party.

If you remain very concerned you may inform the Property Registration Authority that you are a spouse of the registered owner of the property. A notice to that effect will then be registered against the property. However, you are not obliged to enter such a registration and not doing so will not affect your rights, it will simply offer you peace of mind.

It’s funny, many’s a time Roscommon lost to a late score in the Hyde, a right sickener, and the rain would be lashing down, and you’d ask me if I wanted to go for a pint and I’d say something like ‘Nah, haven’t a notion, just don’t feel like it after that…’

Yeah…

And now I’d give anything to hop into our local, even if Roscommon lost to Mayo or Galway in the Championship, even if it was bucketing down and freezing cold, I’d give anything to pop in and find a corner and just order a pint or a hot one and have the chat…

So, are you still as bored as ever with this lockdown?

Well, kind of, but we have to be vigilant. We have to do this!

I know, I know! Keep washing our hands, look out for one another…especially the elderly and vulnerable.

Roscommon Garden Club cancels trips Due to the continuing Covid-19 pandemic, it is with great regret the Roscommon Garden Club has had to cancel their two outings. The annual day trip, which was scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 23rd, is now cancelled. The overnight trip scheduled on the 26th and 27th of June has also been cancelled.

What PEOPLE are talking about People have been talking about: President Donald Trump’s increasingly bizarre press briefings, including his now famous musings about injection of disinfectant as a possible treatment for Covid-19; in Ireland, there’s been concern since last weekend that

more people are becoming cavalier in their approach to lockdown; speculation continues about Government formation, amid reports that the expected Fianna Fáil/ Fine Gael/Green Party Coalition (with support of some Independents) may not be in place until June.

It’s been abundantly clear since last weekend that more members of the public are beginning to relax their commitment to the Government’s public health guidelines on Covid-19.

It’s understandable that the public is becoming impatient – and anxious to get out and about – but social distancing and staying at home is absolutely essential to overcoming this crisis.

Kieran Mulvey: ‘I’ll support jobs’ push’ The Roscommon People understands that Roscommon native Kieran Mulvey, one of the most respected public figures in the country, has indicated that he would be happy to engage with local stakeholders on a major job creation initiative here.

Mr. Mulvey recently informed Cllr. Tony Waldron that he would agree to attend a ‘Jobs Seminar’ or ‘Think-In’ and add his experience and insights into any such initiative aimed at addressing job creation needs in this county.

Cllr. Waldron (pictured, right, with Mr. Mulvey at a recent conference in Longford) said that Kieran Mulvey is a vastly experienced individual with renowned problem-solving and communications’ skills.

Formerly head of the Workplace Relations Commission, Mr. Mulvey is arguably the country’s most renowned mediator of industrial disputes.

A native of Roscommon, he was recently appointed Just Transition Commissioner (in relation to issues arising from the closure of peat-fired power stations).

Cllr. Waldron said that he had approached Mr. Mulvey in relation to the need for job creation in Roscommon. Cllr. Waldron: “Kieran Mulvey has the skills to assist and is more than happy to do so…he is deeply loyal to Roscommon too”.

Cllr. Waldron said that there are a number of entrepreneuers who are either natives of Roscommon or who have Roscommon connections whom he also believes will be willing to attend the proposed seminar and lend their support to such an initiative. Cllr.

Waldron said that he is working on progressing this project with urgency.

A diary of the times that are (part 7) Thursday

Our friends in the County Library were in touch recently to double-check that we’re retaining (for their files) copies of every Roscommon People published during lockdown. Which of course we are.

When I spoke with the lady on the phone, she mused about the importance of newspapers as a first port of call when people are looking for information on historical events.

“It’s amazing. Whenever people want to find out about something huge that happened – how life was in Roscommon during the war years, etc. – they come here (to the library) and ask for our newspaper files. The papers are always their starting point”.

And the lady from the library had absolutely no doubt that generations yet unborn will be making contact with Roscommon libraries in the future to find out just how life was in this country during the Covid-19 era – and how it was reported upon.

Well, that exchange didn’t surprise me, but it was still a nice reminder of the great, enduring bond between the local newspaper and the people of rural Ireland, a positive thought that sustained me as I scrambled around an empty office in search of recent editions of the Roscommon People! (Successfully located, and set aside for the County Library).

And for anyone who’s now reading this from the future – so to speak – here’s a quick summary: Where we are: In early 2020 a new and nasty virus spread across the world with great haste.

The coronavirus (Covid-19) quickly reached pandemic status. It effectively brought the world to a standstill. As I write, in late April 2020, there have been over 200,000 deaths worldwide, and over 1,000 in Ireland. There have also been countless millions of job losses worldwide, with normal life suspended.

Virtually no flights (or travel of any type), businesses and places of leisure closed, well over half the world in lockdown. Our social interaction has been turned upside down; we can no longer meet up (much less shake hands or embrace), and if we do, we need to maintain social distancing (of about six foot).

Where we were: (This is for our friends from the future who may be reading this in decades

to come). Just seven weeks or so ago, it was all quite different.

In those days, as recently as early March, we led an imperfect but less precarious existence.

We didn’t go to bed at night and wake in the morning to thoughts of a cruel pandemic, the latest figures of fatalities fresh in our minds.

We did live in a society with problems, but a progressive one nonetheless, featuring a strong economy and what is deemed to be full employment (our jobless rate has just gone from 4.8% to closer to 25% within weeks).

But most of all, challenges notwithstanding, we had the social interaction that people thrive on, need. We gathered in our thousands for sporting, entertainment and other public events. We rubbed shoulders together in pubs, restaurants and cafes. We stopped and chatted and embraced/shook hands on busy streets. We travelled to meet loved ones.

But one good aspect of life under lockdown (they say the restrictions will be eased soon) is that great community spirit has manifested itself.

We are a resilient and strong people, and good people are doing good things. After Covid-19, we may – as many predict – be a changed people. Ideally we will learn from this emergency and merge what we learn from it with the best of our past.

And, friends from the future, when you leave the County Library front door, take a wander to your right and make sure you visit and appreciate our great old town – and all who’ve made it what it is! And greetings to you…

Will Keane’s latest virtual live quiz entertained us this evening. Will, who lives up the road from us, has played a blinder during lockdown with his online quiz each Friday night. Will has excelled as quizmaster, and the weekly event has been a welcome break from Covid-19, but best of all, the initiative has raised an incredible €11,000 plus to date (for a number of charities).

He hosts his last quiz this Friday night, in aid of Roscommon/Mayo Hospice. You can find details of the event on Facebook under Will’s Kitchen Table Quiz for Mayo Roscommon Hospice. The Quiz kicks off at 9 pm on Friday, 1st of May on Facebook Live. (See full details on page 17 of this week’s Roscommon People).

I visualise Jimmy White, the snooker genius, now slower, matured, a still-revered veteran, pacing around his home, no longer a wild boy on the social circuit, no longer a competitive force in his sport. I imagine him living a much more sedate life now, and of course adhering to the rules of lockdown.

Perhaps he’s into cooking, or growing vegetables now, or gardening. And I imagine him last week, and Jimmy thinking – at some stage – that he’ll just buy into the times that are, and maybe watch some afternoon TV. He may even have been thinking that things can’t really get much worse.

And I visualise Jimmy perking up (initially) when he sees that the BBC will show ‘Crucible classics’ every single day. And then I visualise initial mixed emotions when he realises that almost all of the featured World Snooker Championship games from the past involve…

Jimmy White. Almost all of them revisiting the heartbreak of his various agonising defeats (six world finals in all).

And I imagine Jimmy going back out to the garden pretty quickly…

Another beautiful evening (better than forecast) and over our home outside Roscommon town, another plane-less sky.

Over the past five years or so we have often seen as many as 20 planes in the skies above us over the course of an evening. I saw one about a week ago, but nothing since. And, truth be told, the skies look all the better for it!

Meanwhile, the chirping birds have never sounded better. Presumably that’s because we now have more time to hear and appreciate them. It’s not that there are more birds in the sky during Covid-19! Don’t take my word for it.

Niall Hatch of Birdwatch Ireland has dispelled that growing theory amongst us non-experts: “A lot of people are asking us has the lockdown

produced more birds, and the answer is no.

The number of birds is the same as it has always been. It is just people are more aware of them than they have normally been”.

Yes, like I said! (And by the way, ‘Hatch’ is a good name for a Birdwatch spokesperson).

But people need to stand up to bullies, and I really wish one of the weak journalists on the White House lawn/in the press room would stand up to Our Hero. I’ll even provide them with the following script (no charge)…

‘Excuse me, Mr. President. There is no need for you to so rudely dismiss my question like you just did. You may be the President of the United States, but that does not give you any right to be so rude and insulting. In fact, because you are the President of the United States, there is an onus on your to give a good example, and to be respectful and courteous. Now, show some manners!’

Roscommon Agricultural Show is cancelled Roscommon Agricultural Show, which was due to take place in mid-August, has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The annual Show is one of the biggest events on the agricultural and social calendar and its cancellation, which had been widely expected, is another blow to the local economy.

Show Chairperson Mr. Damien Hannon confirmed news of the cancellation. The decision was taken in light of HSE/Government advice and in consultation with the ISA (Irish Shows Association).

Mr. Hannon said that the decision was taken in the best interests of show volunteers, exhibitors, supporters and

the general public. He said that the health and wellbeing of all concerned was of paramount importance at this time.

Mr. Christy Tully, Show President, pictured top right, thanked the people of Roscommon for their ongoing support. He said that Roscommon Industrial & Agricultural Show Society wishes everyone well during this difficult period and advises everyone to observe all HSE guidelines in relation to the outbreak of Covid-19.

Local businesses are being asked by Denis Naughten TD to consider how they can introduce social distancing to allow them to safely re-open and also what supports they may need.

Last week in the Dáil, Denis Naughten proposed measures which could allow people to safely return to work, including placing a yellow notice on public access to the workplace outlining how they are complying with social distancing rules.

“Over the coming weeks steps will be taken to re-open our economy. However, we are all conscious of the fact that it won’t simply be a case of ‘business as usual’ and that we will have to find new ways of doing things,” explained Denis Naughten.

“Social distancing will remain a feature of our lives for some time and this will no doubt present challenges which are unique to each industry, profession and business. I believe by working together we can find solutions and supports that will allow businesses to find a new way of operating and allow us to restart our economy.

“I am reaching out to local business owners as the experts in their business, industry or profession as they are the people best placed to help find the answers to the challenges we are facing.

“I am asking people to contact me with suggestions in relation to social distancing measures that could be taken in their business, industry or profession to allow them to safely get back to work. I am also interested in hearing about the challenges implementing social distancing would create: will it have financial consequences, implications for premises, etc.

Basic Farm Payment: Kerrane wants farmers supported Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane, left, has called on the Minister for Agriculture to provide assistance to farmers who struggle to fill in the forms for the Basic Farm Payment.

Deputy Kerrane said: “There are a number of farmers who cannot apply for the Basic Farm Payment online and depend on the paper application and help to complete it.

“In previous years, staff from the Department of Agriculture have travelled to different parts of the country to assist farmers to fill out these forms. Clearly, this is made more difficult this year due to Covid-19, however with the deadline of May 15th quickly approaching, I have been contacted by a number of farmers who are unable to fill out the forms.

“These farmers are really worried about getting the forms for this payment filled in as they rely on the payment as crucial farm income.

“I have contacted Minister Creed to request that a process be put in place for these farmers. I have also suggested that where this is not possible, Teagasc should be instructed to step in on a voluntary basis to assist farmers at this time”.

Crosby: ‘Spread of Covid in nursing homes appalling’

Roscommon county councillor Tom Crosby, left, has said he is “appalled” and “deeply saddened” at the speed at which Covid-19 has spread in nursing homes around Ireland in recent weeks.

Speaking to the Roscommon People, the local councillor acknowledged that this was an “unprecedented situation that none of us could’ve been prepared for,” but said it was “totally unacceptable that those members of our community, our most vulnerable, who are living in what we envisaged to be safe and secure residential environments, have not been a priority for those working tirelessly to eliminate the spread of the disease”.

He added: “This is a devastating issue which directly affects muchloved members of our own families who are resident in care homes here in the midlands region, and whom we cannot visit due to the ongoing restrictions. We need to at least know that they are safe and well from this invisible enemy”.

He added: “In light of this, I welcome Hiqa’s announcement that nursing homes around the country will now have to complete a self-assessment and prepare for an on-site inspection from social service providers from April 29th onwards to see how prepared homes that don’t have cases of Covid-19 are for a potential outbreak”.

It’s Saturday evening in this very strange world we’re living in, and my son rings me to tell me that the Connacht rugby win over Leinster in the 2016 Pro 12 final in is being shown on TG4. He says he feels it would be worth looking at again – if only to relive the extraordinary scenes that the victory for the Cinderella province sparked over in Murrayfield, Edinburgh.

However the funny thing is, as a result of my working life in the retail world at that time (and working Saturdays), I had not seen the original game at all. So, despite the fact that I do not usually watch sporting re-runs and have not looked at any of the many games that TV producers keep digging up from the archives, I settled in, put the feet up, and watched what was undoubtedly one of the greatest sporting occasions for those from the West of Ireland.

As it happened, my wife Carol had also missed the actual game, and so she too

decided to have a look. In the end, it was not so much the match itself, but rather our behaviour during it that was the most surprising; despite already knowing that our lads had won – and in the process had played some of the best rugby ever seen at any stage – we found ourselves roaring at the telly, and giving out about the referee!

We were quite literally on the edge of our seats when the game entered the final heart-stopping minutes. When the final whistle went, we were as excited and delighted as if it had just happened, and when we settled down, we felt a bit foolish that a game more than four years old and already won could have had such an effect on two supposedly sensible and mature people.

I wonder if it’s a reaction to our isolation that anything worthwhile is a bonus, but whatever the reason, we thoroughly enjoyed reliving what was a great time for Connacht rugby. It also showed once again what a wonderfully entertaining, talented team Pat Lam had assembled at that time.

Will it ever happen again? Who knows, but for John Muldoon and his merry men, immortality came on that Saturday in Murrayfield, and I can finally say I saw it all, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Last week I told you about 89-yearold Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh and his inspiring (for some) fitness video aimed at helping the older person to keep fit. I said it wasn’t for me, and that I wouldn’t be watching any more such videos – I was lying to you because as long as I live I will continue to watch the recent video posted by former Cork hurling star Kevin Cummins, right.

He is, amongst other things, a successful business person (being managing director of Cummins Sports Ltd.), a former school teacher, brother of Brendan and Ray Cummins (each of whom have won All-Ireland Hurling medals, while Ray also won a football one), a winning All-Ireland minor hurling captain, and up to now a man, despite all his successes, that I had never ever heard of.

However, at the age of 74, he put his own fitness video on social media and in my opinion, it is one of the funniest things that I have ever seen. If you haven’t seen it yet, look it up under Kevin Cummins fitness video, and you will nearly die laughing. It sums up the way we older folk should look at fitness regimes, and all I can say is it’s much closer to my own level than that of Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh. Good man Kevin, there’s hope for us all.

And finally…

Finally for this week, in this time of global disaster, it’s amazing and heartwarming how so many heroes, in every shape and form, have emerged from everywhere to do extraordinary things. Over in Bedford, England, 100-year-old Tom Moore has captured the hearts and minds of the world by doing laps of his Bedfordshire garden and in the process he has raised more than £29million for the NHS. Captain Tom, as he is now known, has received more than 125,000 birthday cards already – so I’m sure his local postman must be absolutely delighted! But even if the poor ol’ postie’s back is broke, it’s a great story, and well done and happy birthday to Captain Tom!

‘The Court House fire was an event never to be forgotten by the townspeople’ Before his death in 1953, George N. Geraghty wrote extensively about his memories of life in Roscommon Town (and environs) in the early years of the 20th century…the Roscommon People is pleased to serialise these fascinating memories The Press There were two weekly newspaper printed in Roscommon – ‘The Roscommon Messenger’ and ‘Roscommon Journal’. The Messenger was the property of the Hayden family, and to its credit, may it be said that it upheld Parnell to the last. Joe Hayden was manager and he had a very able staff. Willie Kelly, Pat Hogan, Tom Rabbit, Jimmie Curley, Tom and Jimmie Lynett, and James Quigley (now publisher of The Roscommon Champion) were the compositors, or printers. W.H. Carton was the reporter and later became the Editor; he attended all Board meetings and Law Courts. Charlie Fallon in later years assisted Mr. Carton.

The Messenger was then a very interesting weekly paper. Charlie Fallon attended the Roscommon national school Tom Larkins, before he joined the Messenger staff and today he is on the Parliamentary Debates Staff of our own Parliament. His brother Frank, also a former Tom Larkins pupil, is on the literary staff of Independent Newspapers Ltd. These are coveted positions held by two Roscommon men, apart from local news. The Messenger printing works carried out some very good job printing, such as posters for concerts, race meetings, etc. John Hayden is still hale and hearty living in Mullingar and publishing ‘The Westmeath Examiner’. William Tully published ‘The Roscommon Journal’. The Tullys were also auctioneers.

The Journal took the Healy side at the time of the Parnell split, but it was on the wrong side as nothing would turn Roscommon against Parnell. Time and time again the voters returned the Parnell candidate at the head of the poll, Luke Hayden for South Roscommon and J.J.O’Kelly for North Roscommon. When Luke Hayden died, his brother John P. Hayden contested the seat against John Dillon with the same result. Hayden elected with a fine majority.

Transport The old side car was in great demand in those days. The commercial travellers made Roscommon Headquarters, and went by sidecar to Strokestown, Elphin, Lanesboro, Ballygar and Creggs. Flynn’s Royal Hotel, Tumelty’s Hotel, P.C. Mitchell’s Hotel, James Mannion in Main

Street, Willie Gavagan in Church Street and Tom Smith and Son in Lanesboro Street were the principal owners of Hackney cars, and there was very keen competition among them. Ten to fifteen cars would meet all incoming trains, all drivers striving to get the first passenger.

Victuallers Thomas McDermott, Martin Fallon, James McDermott (no relation to J. McDermott) were all first class victuallers. Thomas McDermott (junior) is carrying on his father’s business, still in the same old shop in Market

Square. Martin Fallon had his shop next door to the Bank of Ireland, now Igoe and Co. Drapers, and James McDermott was set up near McGuinness’ Chemist Shop.

Pawn Offices Believe it or not we had two pawn offices in Roscommon. Sam Ford kept one in Market Square near the site of the present club and Tommie Kenny kept one in Church Street opposite Church Gate.

The tailoring trade Before the ready-made clothing appeared in the drapery shops the tailors were always kept busily engaged. Henry Fallon in Church Street (where Miss Fox has a sweet shop now)…he had a constant staff or five or six tailors, and at times had several journeymen tailors engaged.

James Connor lived opposite Fallon’s. He also had a few men working constant. Then Joe Egan and his sons Willie and Joe also in Church Street opposite the late Edward Keogh’s shop. John Hanly in Castle Street, Edward Gormley in Henry Street and his brother James in Abbey Street as in the boot trade you had to wait a long time for a fit on.

The tailors always seemed to have more orders than they could cope with.

The Burning of the Court House The Court House fire was an event never to be forgotten by the townspeople. It was a terrible blaze, fanned by a very strong wind blowing from Ballybride direction. The flames were carried across the street and from where Willie Watt lives now, to Mrs. Jim Gavin’s in Church Street, where there was a line of small houses. They were all more or less destroyed. Charlie O’Rorke had a shop where Mr. Henchie had his drapery store now, and it was also on fire. A few small houses on the site of Mr. Michael Farrell’s shop, all thatched, also caught fire, but were saved by water carried in barrels on donkey carts from the tank at the end of Goff Street. The British Military were then stationed at the barracks near the Railway Station and they, with the townspeople, did all that could be done to stop the fire. Some of the old charred documents were afterwards found as far away as at the brink of the Shannon!

The old Grand Jury at the time had charge of the affairs of the county, and they advertised for plans to be submitted for its reconstruction.

Trump’s musings on virus remedies are very disquieting Our lives have suddenly become a cracked mirror…fragmented into several different transformative issues: the global public health crisis, the economic devastation, the ban on engaging in essential everyday activities, like seeing beloved family members in person, and the limiting of the food shop to just once a week, etc.

However, last week, as I emitted an anguished cry upon realising I couldn’t be with my granddaughter to celebrate her 13th birthday, hubby (who was comforting me), suddenly became concerned when, in a flash, I erupted into bursts of laughter, shouting ‘warning, warning, danger’ klaxon sounds of terror that trumpeted (pun intended) throughout the house.

Yes, you’ve guessed it…as I was wallowing, the radio was on, and Donald Trump’s controversial announcement that perhaps we should consider hitting the body with ultraviolet light and use injections of disinfectants as a way of combatting the coronavirus made world headlines.

Of course Captain Chaos (fans of the Cannonball Run movie will get it) and his controversial remarks have been widely ridiculed – (and rightly so). However for the sake of balance, the man who claims he’s “like, a very smart person” – but who possibly has the IQ (and skin tone) of a carrot – rebuffed his comments so fast, I’m surprised

he doesn’t have G-Force face, insisting his theory was an attempt at sarcasm, “just to see what would happen”.

The thought of the world’s most powerful individual baiting journalists as a jibe, while we’re in the throes of a worldwide disaster, is not only disturbing in my opinion, it’s grievous; with the Tangerine Tornado’s pandemic propaganda being akin to someone lighting a match beside a petrol pump dispenser. Indeed his comments were so incendiary, the reaction by leading disinfectant manufacturers across the globe was both swift and clear. The chequered flag was dropped and the race was on, with well-known household brands competing to be the first to issue statements warning people not to ingest or inject themselves with such toxic products, with brands like

Cillit Bang, Vanish and Dettol now ‘trending’ on all major social media platforms.

In addition, medical experts were quick to tear down what has got to be this narcissist’s most illogical – and at the same time laughable – statement of his presidency. I mean, love him or loathe him, (I loathe him), you’ve got to admit, this self-promoting POTUS is box office gold!

Completely obliterating what was a hugely troubling statement, Trump papered over the serious consequences of it and instead tried to turn it into one of his fake news pandemic propaganda strategies. This means, in his salacious little mind, Putin’s pet has branded his ‘drink your daily dose of disinfectant’ as an alternative therapy as nothing more than the nefarious opus of the world’s meeja.

Hurling himself against the bars of his position as if to test the durability of his power stuntman style, Mayor of Osaka, pictured right, (Japan’s third largest city), Ichiro Matsui implied that men were better at shopping than women because, well, apparently being the sensible sex, men ‘spend less time in stores’. Now at this point ladies I suggest we all take a minute or two to digest the electronically charged atmosphere generated by this misogynist’s comment!

I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt, that this Mayor is lucky he’s not married to me; because if he were, he’d find his Viagra pills being replaced with a healthy dose of Oestrogen… (only joking)…not!

Look ladies, like you, I’m married to an intelligent man, however, even if, as Mayor Matsui suggests, ‘Men quickly grab what they’re told to buy…’ there are certain things we just have to do

ourselves! Sorry lads! You see, if I give he-who-insists-he-can-dothe-shopping a specific list, he’ll still come home with the contents of the supermarket’s middle aisle, i.e. a toolbox, a power washer and a tin of paint, with the only edible items in his trolley being a family pack of Meanies and a jar of Marmite! Sorry darling, you know I love you, and while I appreciate you’re capable of doing so many difficult (and easy)

tasks, the family food shop isn’t one of them. It’s as if my wonderful hubby, upon stepping inside the supermarket’s doors, allows himself to lose concentration, with all reason temporarily surrendering itself to the lure of the fluorescent lights in the ‘special buys’ DIY aisle. It’s at this point, the essential organically grown vegetables escape his notice while he instead loads his trolley with items we cannot, nor will not, ever eat!

Now I have never bought into the whole paradigm that women are in charge of all things domestic; it’s just outrageous, and for the record, hubby does his fair share of the household chores, etc. However, despite me giving him a PowerPoint on the differences between iceberg, lamb’s, butter-head and leaf lettuces, (‘cos I’m that pedantic), darling hubby will still come home with a bag of kale, because to him… they’re all edible green leaves!

Respect social distancing guidelines!

While I have your attention dear readers, can I respectfully remind everyone that all staff working in our shops, supermarkets, pharmacies and petrol stations are providing us with an essential service, so please show them some courtesy.

I’m conscious of the fact that some rude members of the public are becoming abusive when being asked to queue and maintain a two-metre social distance. I’ve experienced a situation whereby a lady and a gentleman totally ignored the guidelines at a local shop, standing so close to me and others in the queue, I actually felt their breath on my neck!

When I politely and respectfully reminded them of their obligations, the ‘gentleman’ unleashed an invective so colourful it made everyone gasp!

5 YEARS AGO Mote Park squirrel nursed back to health < PAULINE SCOTT

It’s a tough life for Val, the Mote Park squirrel who is currently living in the lap of luxury as he/ she recuperates from an inner ear infection in the home of David and Ann Doolan in Mote Park.

Last Friday David Doolan discovered the red squirrel – an endangered species – injured on the road in Mote Park. The squirrel was brought to local vet John Finnegan, who discovered that he had an inner ear infection and prescribed antibiotics to help fight the infection.

In October of last year we reported that the red squirrel in Co. Roscommon was under threat from the non-native grey squirrel. The first ever sighting of a grey squirrel in the county was reported in Mote Park last year, leading to heightened fears about the fate of the native species.

Only 12 sightings of squirrel were reported in the Irish Squirrel Survey published last year.

Because they’re not sure if the squirrel who currently shares their home is a boy or girl, the Doolans decided to go with a safe option and name him Val. This week, Ann Doolan thanked vet John Finnegan for his work (he charged no fee for treating the endangered species).

“I’d say if he was left another hour he would have died,” said Ann. After being discovered Val was brought to Doolans where he was wrapped in tin foil to allow his body temperature to rise.

“We’re just giving him nuts and wild bird seed and acorns from Mote Park and between that and the antibiotics he’s recovering,” said Ann. “We are keeping him in the kitchen and are hoping to move him into the garage to get him acclimatised before we let him or her off again next week”.

The news on the economy over recent weeks and months has invariably been bad. I had to laugh at Bertie on Monday when he said that we were heading for a bad year economically, as if it was big news to people. Is it only now that it has dawned on him that things are going downhill? This slowdown is going on for the past six months!

I suppose when you are paid more than the US president it is hard to feel the pinch when the cost of living goes up. Does he not know that thousands of people are losing their jobs every week in his own beloved construction industry, that the amount of taxes being collected is down by almost half a billion euro a month and that the price of petrol is about to sky-rocket as oil is now 108 dollars a barrel? That will mean a rise in the price of almost everything else.

At a special meeting of Roscommon County Council yesterday (Wednesday) councillors reacted angrily when details of the cuts were revealed by the Council executive. They passed a motion of no confidence in Minister Phil Hogan by 13 votes to 5.

As Minister Phil Hogan withdraws funding from Roscommon County Council due to noncompliance with the household charge, there are immediate cutbacks to the tune of €460,000.

A further €1.3m in cutbacks will take effect in October if there isn’t greater compliance with the household charge.

Being cut immediately are monies for roads, housing grants for the elderly and people with disabilities, grants to cemetery and tidy towns groups, the Mobile Library Service, amenity facilities and resources for litter control.

5 YEARS AGO Good progress made in field-school project < EOGHAN YOUNG-MURPHY

A positive start has been made to a new fieldschool project at Ballintubber Castle in Ballintubber, near Castlerea.

The study is being led by Dr. Niall Brady, a renowned archaeologist, who is joining forces with colleagues from Foothill College, California, and Columbia University, New York, and more that 30 US students.

Over a four-week period, they are examining the 14th century de Burgo Castle. It became a stronghold of the O’Conors until the 17th century and was the scene of many military engagements.

Two weeks into the field-school project, Dr. Brady said: “We are very impressed with what we have seen. Everything is living up to expectation, so we are delighted with ourselves.

“The purpose of the excavation side of it was

to trace some of the old walls inside the castle.

We are beginning to see them as we were hoping to see them. It is really confirmation of what we were hoping we would get.

“But it’s only early days”.

Enda misses Mayo’s five-in-a-row < EOGHAN YOUNG-MURPHY

The Sligo footballers weren’t the only ones who failed to turn up for last Sunday’s Connacht Final – Taoiseach Enda Kenny also failed to appear.

Four years after the closure of the accident and emergency unit in Roscommon Hospital, Mr. Kenny chose not to attend the match, which saw his native Mayo hammer Sligo by the biggest ever margin in a Connacht Final.

The Hospital Action Committee (HAC) erected three huge posters in the vicinity of the ground, anticipating his arrival. Along with a picture of the Taoiseach, they read: ‘No A&E – not forgotten, not forgiven’.

“It says something that, even after four years, he wouldn’t go to the match,” said John McDermott, the chairperson of the HAC, of the Taoiseach’s non-appearance.

“Before the last election, he had no problem coming to town and making commitments”.

TDs urged to make ‘phantom’ Roscommon jobs a red line issue < PAUL HEALY

The delivery of over 150 promised civil/public service jobs that never materialised in Roscommon Town should be a ‘red line issue’ for Independent TDs Michael Fitzmaurice and Denis Naughten in any talks they take part in on a new Programme for Government.

That’s the view of Roscommon councillor Tony Waldron who says it is unacceptable that state-of-the-art Government offices at Golf Links Road were never staffed as promised.

Cllr. Waldron says Roscommon/Galway Oireachtas members have long “turned a blind eye” to the fact that a 230-job project never proceeded as intended.

When the decentralisation of the Property Registration Authority-Land Registry of-

fices was announced back in 2003, 230 jobs were earmarked for Roscommon Town.

However, when fabulous new offices were built at Golf Links Road, less than 80 civil servants actually relocated there. The years have gone by, but the issue of the elusive 150 jobs has not completely gone away.

As recently as 18 months ago, Paschal Donohoe, Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, was quizzed in the Dáil on the status of the 2003 decentralisation programme.

On that occasion, Minister Donohoe confirmed that the already slowly evolving plan had been shelved by the Government in 2011, “in light of the budgetary and staffing outlook at the time”. Minister Donohoe said that as of late 2018, there were 77 public servants in the PRA in Roscommon.

Survey starts for broadband rollout – Naughten

Next week National Broadband Ireland will start to survey rural homes in mid-Roscommon for the delivery of high-speed broadband with the build-out taking place before Easter 2021. That’s according to Independent TD Denis Naughten.

From next week the National Broadband Ireland contractor, 4Site, will commence initial surveys in Ballymurray, Athleague, Castlecoote, Donamon, Ballymacurley, Lackan, Kilroosky, Four-Mile-House and will also survey adjoining areas in Galway and around Lanesboro in Co. Longford.

The initial offering to be made available to homes within the next 12 months will be 150mbps but homes can access up to 1000 mbps with rural business being able to access 10,000mbps if needed from 2021.

“When I became Minister in 2016 only 5 out of 10 premises in Ireland had access to high-speed broadband and these were all in major towns and cities. Today, that is closer to 8 out of 10 premises and when this work is completed every home across rural Ireland will have access to this vital piece of infrastructure,” stated Deputy Denis Naughten.

“Initially the build-out will start in the rural areas around Ballinasloe, Athlone, Roscommon Town and Carrick-onShannon which will be some of the first areas in the country to get this new broadband. It will then move to Castlerea, Elphin, Rooskey, Curraghboy, Cloonfad in West Roscommon and Newbridge, Co. Galway to complete the coverage of County Roscommon and East Galway”.

Cllr. Waldron (Independent) says he is dismayed that local Oireachtas members have “failed to maintain pressure” on successive governments over the non-delivery of the remaining 150 or so jobs to Roscommon.

“This should never have been accepted.

Sufficient political pressure has not been applied. Those 230 jobs were announced for Roscommon Town and most of them never came. It is a failure of political will”.

Cllr. Waldron said that the elusive jobs are needed now more than ever.

“Our Independent TDs Denis Naughten and Michael Fitzmaurice may both be engaged, separately, in Government formation talks over the coming days and weeks. I am calling on both TDs to make delivery of these jobs a red line issue if they are thinking of supporting a new Government”.

Method Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas 4.

Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a large mixing bowl.

Add the eggs, mashed bananas, milk and vanilla extract to the butter and sugar mixture and mix well. Fold in the flour mixture.

Grease a loaf tin and pour the cake mixture into the tin.

Transfer to the oven and bake for about an hour, or until well-risen and goldenbrown.

Remove from the oven and cool in the tin for a few minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely before serving.

Serve on its own or to change it up, add walnuts or chocolate chips.

Reader: ‘People not abiding by restrictions’ Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, I’m writing to you as a resident of Roscommon town and one who, like many more, is abiding by the health isolation and distancing laws, while my work is temporarily closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the last two weeks in particular, I have witnessed on dozens of occasions, people not abiding by these basic laws. Examples would be teenage couples that are obviously not brother and sister, 4-5 children of similar age out playing in public spaces, 2-3 youths in cars with music blaring out of them, 3 females with ‘new hairstyles’ coming out of a house and driving off, 2-3 adult males hanging around on streets, and numerous cars with several people in them, etc.

I’ve seen a car towing a boat, another with a caravan, and many more instances of the laws being boldly broken in the worst global health crisis in our lifetimes.

If it is the case that some people for whom English is not their first language are unaware of the threat to our health, and of the detail of the restrictions, then I would urge the authorities to immediately and urgently commence a public information campaign specifically targeted at foreign nationals (in their native languages).

I also have concerns with regard to the policing of the restrictions. I’ve heard from a Garda that Gardai are receiving a lot of verbal abuse when they stop some people to enquire where they are going. I am strongly of the view that the Gardai should not put up with this abuse.

This small minority of offenders should be cautioned/fined.

The minority of people in our midst who don’t appear to understand (or care?) about the danger they pose to other people by not staying at home should be left in no doubt about the law/ restrictions.

There is, I believe, growing public concern that people are flouting the restrictions and not being held to account. Garda checkpoints need to be set up all over the country to ensure that

unnecessary travel is stopped and to get people who don’t need to be out, to stay home.

I would urge the public to adhere to the restrictions ‘to the letter of the law’ and for those who have been irresponsible to think again and to start complying now. I urge the public to cooperate with the Gardai and I feel that the Gardai must police this situation very firmly.

It is clear that some people are using ‘going to the shop’ as a convenient response when asked why they are out and about. Maybe the powers that be need to consider imposing a condition to the effect that, when shopping, it’s strictly ‘one person per car’. Motorists could also be asked if they have passed a shop which is nearer to their home. If they are claiming they’ve been to the shop, their vehicles could be checked.

This is too serious; we’re in the middle of a deadly pandemic. We need everybody working together.

Family of the late Canon Lavin ‘overwhelmed’ by tributes The family of the late Canon Peadar Lavin have thanked the many people who lined the route from Knockcroghery to his final resting place at Kilmactranny in North Roscommon.

Canon Lavin, a very well-known and distinguished member of the clergy over many decades, passed away peacefully at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Roscommon on April 17th last. He was aged 90. His family have said they were “overwhelmed” by the “lovely tributes” paid by local communities.

In a statement posted on its social media sites, the Diocese of Elphin said that it was sorry to announce the death of Canon Peadar Lavin.

It said: “Canon Peadar Lavin (An tAthair Peadar Ó Láimhín), Sleevinagee, Roscommon Town, former Parish Priest of Knockcroghery Parish, and formerly of Ballyfarnon, died on 17th April 2020, peacefully in the tender care of the staff of the Sacred Heart Hospital, Roscommon.

“His friendship and support and death is mourned by Bishop Kevin Doran, and his brother priests in the Diocese of Elphin”.

A native of Ballyfarnon, the late Canon Lavin was a very popular priest who was very highly regarded during his long life. A brilliant orator, he had a commanding voice and a great intellect. He was a teacher and later principal in St. Mary’s College in Boyle, where he is fondly remembered. A keen GAA fan (and activist) he was a man of diverse interests, and was deeply committed to the Irish language and to Irish culture generally.

His family have extended thanks to everyone who “lined the route from Knockcroghery

Referencing the Covid-19 restrictions which are currently in place, the family said they were “overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness of everyone who came together, but apart, to show just how much he was thought of”.

The late Canon Lavin was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Delia and by his brother Andy and sister-in-law Joan. He is mourned by his nieces, nephew, further relatives and a wide circle of friends including former students and parishioners. He was laid to rest in Kilmactranny Cemetery. May he rest in peace.

Shock and sadness at sudden passing of Tom Judge

There was widespread shock and sadness at news of the sudden passing of Tom Judge, a former Principal of the Convent of Mercy, Roscommon and a well-known member of the local community.

Mr. Judge died suddenly at his home in Roscommon on April 21st last. In a social media post, the Convent mourned “an impassioned and inspirational teacher” who was “a loyal colleague and friend”.

The late Tom Judge of Antogher Road, Roscommon town and formerly Clooncrim, Ballinlough, is mourned by his wife Mary (née Keenan), daughters Siobhán and Deirdre, brothers Pat, Aidan and Vivian, sister Geraldine (Thompson), further relatives, neighbours and many friends.

Widely known and respected over the years through his career in the teaching profession, he was also very involved in golf and synonymous with Roscommon Golf Club.

In a tribute, his former school said: “The entire school community of Meánscoil Muire gan Smál, together with the local community of Roscommon town and its environs, are shocked and saddened to learn of the untimely passing

“Tom will be forever remembered. His great wit and warm and charming smile were just some of the attributes that endeared him to so many. Rest forever in eternal peace our dear friend Tom. You will be sorely missed”. * Due to current government guidelines regarding Covid-19 the funeral was held privately.

Every picture tells a story Main pic: It’s 1963 and Fossett’s Circus is making another visit to Castlerea, where it will be set up at the Fair Green. One of the crew takes Cindy the Elephant on a walk through the town, in order to promote the circus. By design or chance, the elephant walks into a local pub, run by Stephen and Susan Mannion.

There are several suitably startled customers within.

The elephant drinks a glass of stout (why not?) and then prepares to leave. But on the way out, ‘Cindy’ damages the door. While all this was happening, Patsy Glynn Senior, returning from taking photographs at a wedding, drove by. Then he stopped – and took this classic photograph.

Pic 2: Not content with the glass of Guinness she had consumed, Cindy the Elephant opened the door of Dyar’s van and had a sniff at a batch loaf or two. (The Dyars ran a bakery in the town for many years). Sean Browne says: “Older people will remember that in those days the batch bread was delivered to the shops on trays, without wrapping. It was lovely! You’d often see people pulling at a loaf as it was being brought into a shop!”.

Pic 3: Cindy the Elephant, led by one of the Fossett’s Circus team, passes a hardware store which was run by the McDermott family.

Pic 4: In 1972, Cindy passed away in Athenry, from pneumonia. Such was her popularity in Castlerea, it was chosen as her final resting place. Castlerea Towns Trust arranged a burial spot at The Demesne. Michael Raftery, now living in Loughglynn, dug the elephant grave. A number of locals were present to give Cindy, who had endeared herself to the people of Castlerea, a fond send-off. Cindy’s grave can still be visited/ viewed to this day. A gravestone was added in 2014.

Sean Browne says: “The iron surround was part of the generator used in Castlerea to generate DC current for the town before the ESB came. Local blacksmith Dan Mullins put concrete with a bar in it which he used at his forge to put the iron on the wooden wheels. I got Michael Raftery and Noel Raftery, who buried Cindy, to take this from our garden and put in on Cindy’s grave. It was that heavy they had to use a digger”.

Sean says that Mannion’s Pub (main picture) was a very popular premises. Stephen Mannion was Sean’s grand-uncle. Stephen and Susan’s son (also Stephen) still lives in Castlerea.

Meanwhile, the local men’s shed recently made a ‘concrete elephant’ – but it cannot be delivered at present due to Covid-19 restrictions. It was Denis Cooper who originally mentioned the idea of marking Cindy’s grave. The headstone was paid for/sponsored by Benny O’Connell and John Keenan, and supplied by Declan Hawthorne. A lovely inscription was penned

by Chis Keane from Williamstown.

Transition Year students raise almost €11,000 for Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation

Two transition year students at CBS Roscommon have raised almost €11,000 for Mayo/ Roscommon Hospice.

Tommie O’Hara and Sean McCormack were organisers of a huge tractor run that happened in Roscommon Town at the beginning of March.

The tractor run was in memory of Tommie’s sister, Tracey Brennan, who came to prominence having campaigned for the drug Pembrolizumab to be available to all cervical cancer patients. Tracey passed away last year.

Tommie and Sean came up with the idea of a tractor run for their transition year project, as they are both ‘into tractors’, according to Tommie. Over 200 tractors turned out for the event, held on 8th of March in Roscommon Mart. Following the run and a raffle held on the day, a total of €10,736.65 was raised for Mayo/Roscommon Hospice.

CEO of Mayo/Roscommon Hospice Martina Jennings said: “We were blown away by the amount raised by the

tractor run and the fact that Tommie and Sean are two transition year students and are still so young but still decided to organise something that will benefit so many palliative care patients. They truly are incredible young men”.

Will’s virtual quiz…big finale this Friday!

When the announcement of a national lockdown came, a Roscommon man, Will Keane, saw it as an opportunity to do some good for charities whose demand has increased due to the crisis.

He decided to run a quiz from his kitchen table each week in aid of a different charity.

“The idea was inspired by fundraising activities being organised for Daffodil Day being shut down overnight,” the 39-year-old farmer says.

“I decided to do my little bit to raise some muchneeded funds for a very worthy cause. I have being running quizzes for years in the village of Knockcroghery for the Jack and Jill Foundation and decided to try out bringing the concept online in a virtual live quiz!”

The first fundraiser raised €2,500 for the Irish Cancer Society and those taking part expressed an interest in this being a weekly event. Since that first quiz, Will and his ‘quizzers’ have raised over €11,000 for Crumlin Children’s Hospital, Alone, The Samaritans and Women’s Aid. “As well as running a quiz

Funds are being raised to build a garden pod at Roscommon Hospice in honour of the late Irene Beirne.

I wanted there to be two hours in the week where we forgot about the coronavirus and I try and create as much fun as possible. We have a live music round with me playing tunes on the melodica – badly – and each week we have a different theme where players send in pictures of themselves in that theme!”

Competitors have so far

dressed up in silly hats, as cartoon characters and as the cast of Father Ted. This week marks the last Kitchen Table Quiz and Will is running it for a cause close to his heart.

“A friend of mine, Irene Beirne, had been raising huge amounts of money and awareness for the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice. Last year Irene

sadly lost her own battle with cancer and we are raising money for a Garden Pod in her honour”.

The garden pod will be installed in the grounds of the Roscommon Hospice, which is currently being constructed in the county town. Will is hoping to raise €5,000 towards this project in this Friday’s quiz.

The theme of this week’s quiz is ‘County Colours’, and Will is encouraging participants to dress up in their county or club colours.

“I’m guaranteeing pure madness in this final quiz. Expect 10 rounds of questions, picture rounds, the melodica music round and of course dingbats. As this week is Irish county themed,

we will cover the 32 counties in our questions”, promises Will.

Our local An Post staff continue to deliver during Covid < MIRIAM KERINS

An Post is an organisation operating on the frontline; with its friendly staff working harder than ever to provide not just an essential service, but their delivery personnel are also keeping customers’ spirits raised – especially those who’re home alone cocooning. I caught up with lovely Post-person Helen Greene, a native of Elphin, who makes deliveries to customers around Tulsk and surrounding areas to find out how, and if, the change in circumstances has affected her daily rounds.

Come hail, rain or shine, you and your colleagues have to deliver the post, but with the latest coronavirus restrictions in place, are you finding your rounds to be busier than ever?

Yes it’s busier, and these days, I find that Mondays are usually a bit busier than other days. That’s probably because people are buying online now more than

ever. People are also writing to each other, and An Post launched the free post cards which have proved to be very popular, which is great.

Post-persons like yourself are proving to be a great community support to those along your delivery route, this is especially so in the case of seniors or those who are vulnerable…

Yes, I’m on my own in the van all day so it’s so lovely to interact with people, some of them would even have a cup of tea waiting for you that they’d give you across the wall (adhering to the social distancing guidelines at all times). People are always very glad to see you, and while it’s business as usual, I’d be asking any vulnerable customers and seniors who may live a good bit away from family and friends, to pop a little note in their window for me if they need anything. It’s all part and parcel of the service.

When your deliveries are done, how do you relax?

When I get home I go for a walk within the two-metre guideline restrictions, and I go into the garden and enjoy that, and I’m also enjoying the sunshine.

Brogan’s Total Health – a pharmacy on the frontline providing essential services during the pandemic < MIRIAM KERINS

Unlike many shops and services who’ve been forced to temporarily close, pharmacies across Roscommon not only maintain full opening hours, they’re also often extending them when a customer needs an emergency supply of prescribed medication or runs short of vital necessities, etc. With that in mind, I caught up with Pat Brogan of Brogan’s Total Health Pharmacy in Boyle to find out how he’s adapting to the new Covid-19 restrictions.

This pandemic has placed a greater dependence on pharmacies, how is your business coping, and what preventative measures have you put in place?

We’ve sectioned off areas of the shop to ensure proper interaction with customers. Staff are wearing face shields and masks, gloves and gowns. There are only three people at a time allowed in the shop, and we’ve placed seats outside also (adhering to the two-metre distancing guidelines) for those who have to wait to enter. We’ve got a sign outside the shop advising those who do enter to use the hand sanitiser provided, and we’ve placed stickers on the floor marking out the two-metre distances, etc. In order to maximise flow and minimise contact for everyone who enters, we’ve got one entrance into the shop, and one exit out of the shop.

Are you providing a service for those who are cocooning/are vulnerable/unable to visit the pharmacy?

Yes, we are doing a lot of deliveries, and we’re always available in a time of emergency. Our emergency number is 087-3884208, and people can call or text us on that, or download the Total Health

App and send us a message there.

Have you seen an increase in sales of any other products?

Yes, people are buying a lot of vitamin C and D and Zinc, gloves, masks, hand sanitisers and disinfectant wipes; as well as sales in non-contact thermometers. And there’s been a bit of an increase in sales of hair colour and hair clippers.

You’re very busy; do you get any downtime?

Yes I do, but I’ve always got a lot of bookwork to do, and I catch up on that. However, for the first time ever I’ve subscribed to Netflix and I can’t believe the choices on offer.

Can I say a big thank you to our staff who have been amazing and a big thank you to our customers for adhering to our new social distancing guidelines; they’ve all been very understanding.

Staying connected and keeping informed: How Assumpta’s beauty salon is dealing with lockdown! < MIRIAM KERINS

A quick scan of my Facebook page and other social media sites has revealed that – once this lockdown has been lifted – a trip to the beauty salon is a priority for most people. With that in mind, I caught up with local beauty therapist Assumpta Golden to find out how she’s preparing her Roscommon town salon for what may be a post-quarantine, business boom.

How are you bracing and preparing for the impact? Well we’ve been closed temporarily since March 13th and I miss my lovely clients but I am doing some online courses, one of which is a Barbicide course. It’s a sanitation awareness course, and while sanitation and hygiene have always been vital in my line of business and I engage in continuous education and I always will, this virus is strange, and we have to prepare the salon in every way we can for a return to business.

I always like to keep myself fully informed about all aspects of sanitation and infection control, etc. I’m also doing brushing up on marketing strategies

and getting great tips and keeping busy learning new ways to improve my business.

How have you been reassuring clients? I’m staying connected with clients on social media. I’m giving them advice and guidelines around products to use, etc., in order to help them maintain a good skincare routine.

In light of the good weather, I would always advise people to apply sunscreen; it’s possibly the best anti-aging device you can use.

Any tips for readers?

If I could offer one tip it’d be aimed at those working from home on laptops and using mobile phones, etc., to

remind them to be aware of the blue high energy visible light (HEV) emitted from these devices. People tend to forget these rays, and my advice is to use a broad spectrum sunscreen if you’re sitting in front of a screen all day.

What are you missing most about your business? Oh I miss the laughs and the connection with my clients, and even though I’m in touch with them on social media, it’s not the same. For example, I’m enjoying baking scones and bread and clients would often very kindly give me new recipes, and I miss that aspect, and look forward to the day when we’re able to open again.

How are you spending your down-

time? I’m not a TV person, so I’m enjoying walking (within the 2km guidelines) and as the weather is so good I’m enjoying our garden and I’m catching up on housework. I do miss seeing my parents who live about 25 minutes’ away, and I stay in touch with them on the phone – but it’s difficult not seeing them. We’re lucky in that my mother-in-law lives next door so we can wave at her through the window.

Are you home-schooling?

My three are all practically adults now. I have one doing college exams, one doing Leaving Cert and one doing Junior Cert, but they’re all well able to manage themselves, thank God.

Brian offers practical pandemic advice < MIRIAM KERINS

Testing his brain and keeping sane during lockdown, entrepreneur and founder/operator of The Spool Factory and editor of Boyletoday.com, Brian Nerney has some practical pandemic advice for local businesses.

How has the lockdown impacted on your work?

The Spool Factory is home to a large number of businesses, organisations and remote workers. As soon as lockdown was announced everything ceased operation. On a normal week over 300 people would pass through our doors, but all is now silent. I am still working here keeping the building in order along with updating my other business Boyletoday.com which is now busier than ever as people go online to see the latest news.

Visitor numbers to the website have increased by 43 per cent compared to this time last year.

Based on your own experiences, (as a businessman), what advice would you be offering to other enterprises?

Businesses who are now preparing an exit plan post Covid-19 have the best chance of survival. Those who are waiting and doing nothing right now will be left behind.

Likewise, small businesses need an online presence and retailers who are not selling their goods online should be looking now at this as a matter of urgency. Having a retail business in a small town needs to be complemented by an online shop.

How will Boyle look post Covid-19?

We are very lucky here in Boyle that we had secured over €3m in funding for a number of projects pre-crisis. One that is nearing completion is the cycle path from Lough Key Forest Park. In addition, the massive redevelopment of the Royal building is gone to tender with work set to start later this year.

We have the funding in place for these projects along with others that are ready to start (or finish) this year, and I believe this will see Boyle bounce back quicker than other towns.

How are you dealing with the restrictions personally?

I miss the daily hustle and bustle of commercial life. I am an avid cyclist, but I do not go out on the bike at this time, preferring instead to use the indoor trainer three times per week. I am also very lucky that a portion of Lough Key Forest Park is within a two-kilometre walking distance of my home, so my wife and I get out for walks every other day. I also love gardening and the good weather has allowed me to spend plenty of time there.

Are you catching up on any Netflix shows?

I don’t watch much TV and have limited it to the 9 pm News. In general, I am actually enjoying the time and the fact that my three adult children, who are normally based in Dublin, are at home for the duration of the crisis. It is doubtful we would ever have all been together for a few weeks in a row, and it is really enjoyable – especially the weekend when we can have family dinners, a few beers and a good chat. We have also commenced a Saturday night Zoom quiz with extended family in New York, New Zealand and Dublin, which is great craic!

We extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Claire Quinn and staff at St. Coman’s Medical Centre; to Ursula Donoghue and the nurses from the Roscommon Palliative Care team; to Deirdre Waters and Hospice Care; to Caroline Neilan and the Public Health nurses; and to Mairead Rogers for helping us to take care of Mickey in his own home, also for their compassion and support to Mickey, and to our family.

Tulsk, Lord Edwards GAA club for their expression of sorrow shown to the family. Dad’s motorbike friends who escorted him to his final resting place and gave him the motorcycle salute. Our friends for displaying the flags of his beloved St Faithleachs and Roscommon on his final journey through the gates of Kilgefin graveyard. The musicians whom played some of Dad’s favourite tunes from the doorway of the Church ruins. You all made a very difficult time somewhat easier with your acts of kindness. We are eternally grateful.

To all well-wishers who contacted us in various ways during this very difficult time and provided emotional and practical support. For those who have kept us in your thoughts and prayers, sent floral tributes, cards and messages of condolences we are truly grateful.

To our dear near neighbours and friends, we thank you for your unwavering support as always and especially now, your sympathy and most of all your friendship during this time is greatly appreciated. The look of thunder on John Maughan’s face after Eugene Murtagh’s final whistle in Kiltoom last Sunday spoke volumes. The Roscommon manager’s bitter disappointment was justified, for he had just watched his team take a very significant step in the direction of relegation, having ‘almost’ battled evenly with a pumped up Cork team for seventy minutes in an engaging National League fixture.

“I don’t think that that was the way to lose a game. We had several opportunities in both halves where we should have taken our scores. We gave away a soft goal on a cheap turnover and we were punished. If you want to say that it was an experience then maybe it was, but I’m very disappointed” a morose Maughan told the media scrum that congregated around him at the end of the game.

He is right too. It wasn’t the way to lose a game. Roscommon played energetically and at times with great exuberance on Sunday but failed at the crucial stages of the game to cope with the determination of Cork’s will.

The result leaves Roscommon with just one point after three league matches and, while the optimists among us will talk about what a great experience playing against last year’s All-Ireland finalists was for our young team, the reality is that Roscommon could have won or at least drawn this game. As it was, however, Cork’s ugly hoof-and-pedal-hardafter-it strategy secured the two vital points that were at stake. Roscommon will now spend the rest of the spring attempting to fight off relegation.

that they weren’t quite good enough. It was probably a bit of both.

With seventeen minutes to go, Roscommon had reduced a six-point deficit to three, had an extra man and had been enjoying clear territorial dominance. At that stage you could say they were on top, but behind – because their attack was fairly average and their defence had been caught napping twice in the opening four minutes – and punished on both occasions by Dublin goals.

But in the last thirteen or fourteen minutes, when Roscommon ought to have clawed themselves further back into contention, Dublin instead finished the job impressively.

Before that, Dublin had been nothing special.

So perhaps they had an extra gear all along.

Certainly they deserved the win in the end.

Roscommon’s performance was very frustrating. The players were gallant and at times played quite impressively. After a disastrous start, they refused to panic, and that was a sign of growing maturity. They have had a good championship and there are some positives to be taken from this luckless outing.

Roscommon U-21 manager Mark Dowd was left reeling by Tyrone’s lightning-fast start to Saturday’s All-Ireland U-21 semi-final in which favourites Roscommon were defeated by the Ulster champions.

Roscommon’s dreams of All-Ireland U-21 football championship glory came crashing down at sunny Markievicz Park when they were outgunned by a slick and very well prepared Tyrone side.

Opening the scoring after just 15 seconds, Tyrone were 0-4 to no score in front by the 7th minute – and that meant Mark Dowd’s worst fears were being realised.

Dowd told People Sport: “We knew that Tyrone always start good in games and they usually win when they start well too, so we

were trying to get a good start – but it just didn’t happen for us”.

A mediocre Premier League season The Premier League is petering out with a whimper and by this weekend all the issues could be decided if Hull are relegated, as looks likely now.

It has been a very mediocre season in terms of great games and excitement. Of course that will not matter to Chelsea and Jose Mourinho who were by far the best team (and manager) in the division over the course of the season. But there are a lot of poor sides in the Premier League.

Arsenal are probably the best team after Chelsea, but the rest are poor. Manchester City have great players but they are earning so much money that they don’t seem to care enough about the club. Manchester United are also very poor at the moment. Readers will know that I am not a Louis van Gaal fan but I suppose I will have to admit that getting his team into the Champions League is an achievement for the Dutchman. But United have so much improving to do to return to former glory.

Liverpool have been lost this season without Luis Suarez, while Spurs are so inconsistent.

I am looking out at my garden in the sunshine and thinking I should be in Punchestown at the Festival where the best national hunt racing in Ireland was to take place, but unlike Cheltenham, I am afraid that coronavirus has put paid to that – and correctly so.

The HRI hope is to fit the festival in later in the year but is this feasible, as most of the top class horses are let out for the summer and only come back in the autumn to resume training later in the year with next year’s programme in mind?

Meanwhile, the QIPCO has ended its backing of the Irish Champion Stakes at the two-day Champions Weekend in September which they have sponsored since 2014. The QIPCO decision leaves the €1.25 million Group 1 event without a sponsor for 2020. The line-up of race sponsors for the remaining races of the Champions Weekend is expected to remain. Day 1 is at Leopardstown on the 13th September and Day 2 at the Curragh on the 14th September. The meeting, if it goes ahead, will probably be behind closed doors.

Rekindling has re-joined Joseph O’Brien’s stable. The six-year-old won the 2017 Melbourne Cup before being retired to stud. He won the ‘race that stops a nation’ beating Johannes Vermeer, trained by his father Aidan.

Hopefully racing in France will recommence with four Group races on the opening day at Longchamp on 11th May, as France Galop revealed a new schedule following the shutdown of racing due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The French 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas is taking place on Monday, 1st June. Other Group 1 races, the Coolmore Prix SaintAlary and Prix Ganay will be run on 14th June, the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud on 28th June, and the French Derby and Oaks a week later on 5th July. Germany hopes to resume racing on the 4th May at Dortmund.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic restrictions, the America Arlington Park’s valuable summer programme – originally set to begin on Monday – has been indefinitely suspended by Illinois. A spokesman for the track has said there is no realistic timeline for the resumption of racing and the IRB will assess the situation again at a meeting on 22nd May. In Australia, the Moonee Valley CEO Michael Browell says he would be happy to have an Australian-only Cox Plate scheduled for 24th October 2020, but has not given up hope of an international presence. Covid-19 border restrictions, as existing, make it almost impossible to bring horses to Australia. This could also affect the Melbourne Cup on the 3rd November, just over a week later.

Online darts in Roscommon set to beat lockdown blues!

As with most sports, the darts season in Roscommon has been temporarily halted due to the coronavirus.

However, thanks to technology, there’s now an opportunity to play on! All you need in order to take part are two devices with Internet connection and a Facebook account you can access. Laptops/smartphones or tablets will all work, with a lot of people making use

of two phones in their house to take part.

This is open to any players associated with the Roscommon Darts League or anyone living in County Roscommon who would like to give it a try.

If you are interested, join the Roscommon Online Darts Facebook page where there is full information. We are currently helping out people interested in taking

part and doing practice runs online, so whether you are well experienced with computers or not, there is help at hand. Just join the group and get in contact!

Screen and heard…

There’s been some great old sporting action broadcast by the various TV channels over the past week or two. One of the channels showed extensive highlights of that memorable Ireland-England Six Nations encounter at Croke Park – yes, Croke Park – in 2007. People who were in the stadium on that famous day will tell you the hair stood on the back of their necks, such was the atmosphere. As for that recent repeat showing, it certainly was enjoyable. It was also a reminder of how tunnel-visioned (for the most part) BBC analyst/co-commentator Brian Moore was!

I also enjoyed the re-run of Clare’s historic All-Ireland Hurling title win (over Offaly) in 1995, with the larger than life Ger

Loughnane almost willing his team across the winning line that season through the sheer force of his personality.

On one of the recent Match of the Day Top 10 podcasts (every Saturday night), my old mate Alan ‘Smug’ Shearer did a complete u-turn, possibly for fear of ever running into Roy Keane again.

Alan and Ian Wright and host Gary Lineker were picking the top ten ‘imports’ into the Premier League.

Roy Keane had already won ‘Top Captain’ in a previous podcast by the lads, now he topped the ‘Top imports’ list, holding off the undoubtedly strong claims of Thierry Henry. Lineker, while certainly a fan of Keane’s, wasn’t happy with his guests’ decision, feeling Henry

should be in at No. 1. Wright is a huge fan of Keane’s. Shearer, despite all his run-ins with the Cork man, had done something of a u-turn during this series and was also happy to give the honours to the former Manchester United star.

Finally, there’s been lots of snooker nostalgia in recent days, with the BBC showing classic Crucible matches, including Alex Higgins v Ray Reardon in the 1982 final, and various Jimmy White traumas. If you see any of this snooker action (it’s usually on at around 3-4 pm in the day) you’ll know it’s from many years ago – because the players are puffing away on the fags, and having the odd alcoholic drink too!

‘Jamesie and Con!’ Feedback: ‘Heroes series’ Dear Paul, I enjoyed your ‘Heroes’ column on Con Houlihan (‘Heroes’ 24/4/20). I was lucky enough to meet him a few times as Mulligan’s in Poolbeg Street in Dublin was my local for a time. He only visited it infrequently as his health wasn’t the best when I was a local.

But when I did get the chance to speak with him, and with me being from Knockcroghery, the conversation was only going one way. And one thing he said I’ll never forget – through his fingers of course – ‘Jamesie Murray, a hero down in Kerry’.

When I worked in Dublin in the early 1980s myself and a friend (Pat Monaghan) regularly went to Croke Park on Sundays (no Saturday matches then)…great memories. It was actually surprising how Con, a man with such a love of the country, settled for city life!

The famous quote ‘The pen is mightier than the sword’

comes to mind when it came to Con and his way with words and his memorable articles on all sports and indeed on politics. I agree with you that it was Con who kept the Evening Press going!

He had joined Leeds from Sheffield United in 1976 and he played for QPR in the 1982 FA Cup Final defeat to Spurs.

Hopefully Leeds will get up this year when the season finally resumes. They are looking good. I will never forget the 1965 to 1975 team.

‘Don’t quit when you are beaten – fight back to an even more glorious victory’ HEROES

REFLECTIONS ON SPORTING INSPIRATIONS

‘John Walker had made a number of efforts to go by me and I’d held him off. With about 250 metres to go, when John went by me…I tried to go with John and as I went with him Van Damme went by me as well. But coming up on the inside we had Wellman from West Germany…and as Wellman started to go by me on the inside, all I could think of was just running in my sleep, not getting anywhere. It was like a dream. And as we went over the finish line together all I just saw was the gold medal, the silver medal and the bronze medal disappearing’ – Eamonn Coghlan, on the 1976 Olympic 1500m final, in which he finished fourth By the time I became aware of the great Irish athlete Eamonn Coghlan – a world class middle-distance runner during the sport’s golden era – 1976 ‘had happened’.

When I first saw Coghlan, he was speeding past some of the best athletes in the world, or narrowly losing out to them in tight finishes.

There were athletics’ meets on our TV screens regularly, and the middle-distance races were gripping, with a cast of magnificent athletes battling it out week after week.

After glorying in the feats of this flying Irishman for a while, I eventually became aware of 1976. I discovered that Coghlan had finished fourth in the Olympics that year. Fourth. Worse than last. Fourth…with the last of the medals taunting you.

What was it about Eamonn Coghlan that was so compelling, so exciting?

Maybe it was his arrogance! It was and is, the odd exception aside, an un-Irish characteristic.

We might have expected such self-confidence from one of the American middle-distance runners, or from the dashing New Zealander, John Walker. Irish sports stars didn’t strut on the international stage, not normally. But Coghlan appeared immune to anything resembling an inferiority complex. He seemed to be bursting with confidence; quite simply, he knew how good he was. Of course as a young athlete of great potential he had honed his craft in America (where he later became ‘King of the boards’ on the indoor circuit). Obviously some of that traditional American ‘can do’ attitude had rubbed off on him!

I liked him because of that inoffensive cockiness he had, but mostly, I liked him because he had that kick, that devastating extra gear on the final bend.

When middle-distance running ruled the world – and in the 1980s, it felt like it did – there were two types of top athletes. You had the long-

striding types, who usually had great stamina.

Often these athletes won from the front, or just outlasted everyone else. The second type was probably the most feared opponent, this was the athlete who was blessed with a fast finish. The challenge for them was to stay in contention until the business end of the race, to be in touch with the leaders, on the shoulder…and then strike for home with that sudden, devastating acceleration. Coghlan was the latter type; a speed merchant who could usually move up a gear when others were wilting.

It didn’t always work. If you weren’t a Seb Coe, who more often than not approached races by leading from the front, then you had signed up to a high stakes tactical battle. And that always came with risk. Where to position yourself. When to strike.

Who to watch. Timing, judgement, nerve, composure, all called for. When the guy on the shoulder pounced – and won – as Coghlan often did in those bread and butter meets, it could be riveting. They were the athletes who had us out of our seats, the ones who set our pulses racing.

When the 1980 Olympics came around, we believed in Eamonn. Now he had moved from 1500m to 5000m. But we had reckoned without Miruts Yifter, the Egyptian tornado. We had reckoned without Yifter the Shifter. And we had reckoned without illness, which struck Coghlan with cruel timing. He reached the final. Our nerves were shot, even at the starting bell. Coghlan was in contention, he was in the mix. But there wasn’t enough fuel in the tank. Yifter was gone, dust rising. Two others gone too. Fourth again. Worse than last. Sickening.

‘4th in two Olympic finals’ would have been a cruel, deeply unfair legacy. Thankfully, the Dubliner was setting all sorts of records in America, where, having established himself as the master of the indoor circuit, he was worshipped by fans. He set the world indoor record for the mile, and won the prestigious annual Wanamaker Mile seven times.

Every now and again, often a few days after the event, RTE got footage of Eamonn’s latest thrilling performance in the US. We watched with great pride. It was a golden era for Irish athletics. Marcus O’Sullivan, Frank O’Mara and Longford’s Ray Flynn were also competing at the highest level.

Coghlan is waiting…signals…Coghlan is going to go (commentator’s voice rises in excitement). He looks at him, he’s supremely confident! Eamonn Coghlan is going to do what he has been threatening to do all his life…he is going to win the World Championship…he runs away from the entire field…and Coghlan is the World Champion! A superb run by a supreme athlete’ – RTE commentary on closing stages of 5000m final at the1983 World Championships in Helsinki ‘The Russian has stolen a lead that may be a winning lead…Coghlan looking back for Wessinghage…and Coghlan’s closing…closing very, very quickly…now if Coghlan doesn’t panic and go too soon, he’s got a real chance…

It’s Coghlan against Dmitriyev. Will Coghlan wait? Because, if does…he’s the world indoor mile record holder…a very fast finisher. The attacking point will come off the bend…and he looks at Dmitriyev of Russia and says watch me go…and go he does!

Coghlan was one of the favourites to win that race, but he had come unstuck on the big stage before. The reporters had the ‘Nearly Man’ headlines ready. This was the World Championship. There was huge pressure on the Irishman. He could beat everyone in the world, anywhere. But could he win on the big day? I recall him beating Steve Ovett in a great finish at a UK meet. On his day, Eamonn could take anyone. Now the world was watching…

If you’re going to enter the history books, create a legend, make an already good career great, you might as well do it in style. In Helsinki, and Rooskey, a truly great Irish sporting moment revealed itself.

Excitement raced through our bodies as we watched this extraordinary career peak for our flying Eamonn Coghlan. It looked as if ‘the Russian’ – Dmitriyev – had done a John Walker, a Yifter the Shifter. Our hearts prepared to sink. The teasing

secrets of that closing stretch. Gold, silver, bronze, nothing.

But then Coghlan floated on to the shoulder of his opponent. Then he pressed the accelerator. And just before taking off, Eamonn did something unheard of in athletics. He has always insisted he wasn’t taunting his wilting rival, that it was simply his way of releasing his emotions. In that second, Coghlan knew that he had the pace, that this was his. He looked at Dmitriyev, he smiled, he clenched his fists. Arrogant! Remarkable! Unforgettable!

In Rooskey, we were on our feet, the settee long abandoned. We crouched in front of the telly, willing Coghlan across the line. He soared to victory, to the world title. Finally, a medal of great substance, an outdoor gold to add to his phenomenal indoor feats. It was an incredibly emotional moment for Coghlan. In the previous year or so, he had lost his top three influences…coaches Gerry Farnan and Jumbo Elliott, and his Dad, Bill.

‘Before I left Ireland to go to Helsinki I went to my father’s grave to say a few prayers. I went over to Gerry’s grave and as I looked at the grave I saw the epitaph…‘Don’t quit when you are beaten – fight back to an even more glorious victory. Not only in competition, but also in life’. I plucked some grass from the grave…I stuck it into my wallet and off to Helsinki I went. And the day of that 5000m final I said to myself Gerry ‘you’re going to be with me in this race’.

‘When I went by the Russian and clenched my fists it was because I was going to do something that these people want me to do (the Irish) and that was become champion of the world…it wasn’t arrogance, it wasn’t cockiness, it wasn’t with any disrespect for the Russian. It was because having finished fourth twice, now I’m going to become champion of the world’ – Eamonn Coghlan on his 1983 World Championship win This great Irish sporting star ran for quite a few more years (including in the 1988 Olympics; time had caught up with him, but he reached the 5000m semi-final). What joy Coghlan gave us throughout his career.

At the end of that Helsinki classic, Eamonn Coghlan crossed the line, a champion in the record books and in our hearts. The space between fourth and gold, between fourth and a kind of immortality, can be measured in fate, maybe sweat, maybe steps…definitely heart. He raised his hands to Heaven, in memory of the role models he had lost that year. He blessed himself and inhaled what he deserved, the raw glory of his greatest sporting moment. A hero then, and always.
