Cerebral Palsy and Birth Injury Claims
What is Cerebral Palsy?
If part of the brain that controls the muscles is damaged while the brain is growing, cerebral palsy can result. Cerebral palsy can lead to weakness and lack of co-ordination of the muscles and can exhibit itself as abnormal muscle tone and strength.
Does a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy suggest a poorly or negligently managed birth?
Not always. The exact cause of Cerebral Palsy is unknown. It is known that if the brain is damaged whilst it is growing then this can lead to Cerebral Palsy. However, in some situations, a lack of oxygen to the brain during labour and delivery can result in Cerebral Palsy.
How will I know if my child has a legal case for Cerebral Palsy or a birth injury?
If it can be established that a mother’s pregnancy, labour and delivery were mismanaged by the delivery team and the injury to the baby’s brain could have been avoided, had competent medical treatment been given then certainly questions will need to be answered by the hospital and the delivery team.

Summer is over! Or is it? Well, what’s with the hot weather?!
So, that’s a wrap then!
Huh?
Summer, it’s over!
Sure summer was over at the end of July!
Well, some people say summer lasts ‘til the end of August…
Who are those people?
Look, all I’m saying is, it’s confusing! The seasons aren’t straightforward!
YOU’RE not straightforward!
Well, whatever way you look at it, summer’s over!

So, back to normal then…
Huh?
Well, if summer is over…
IT IS, IT IS!

THEY ARE, THEY ARE!

No! Boyle in County Roscommon is back. Boyle and North Roscommon generally –back in Roscommon-Galway constituency!
Yes, I saw that…
I will factor it into my thinking…
You wha’??
Well, as you know, I have political ambitions…
Oh yeah, that old chestnut…
It’s not an old chestnut! It’s a potentially very exciting political development!

Yeah, well, ahem, I’ll get back to you on that…
I feel my county needs me.
Mmnn… anyways, speaking of politics… Yeah?
I have some breakings news for you…
Huh?
Just on your summertime musings… Yeah?
I said summer finishes at the end of July. You said it’s the end of August. We were both wrong! Summer ends on the 20th of September!

‘Ming’ phone hacking case adjourned to January
< DAN DOONER
A court case involving MEP Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan which relates to an alleged hack of his Twitter account three years ago has been adjourned until January following a hearing in Brussels earlier this week.
The Castlerea MEP claims offensive comments referring to naked pictures of then Green Party candidate Saoirse McHugh were posted from his ac-
count after it was hacked in the early hours of September 28th 2020.
The accused has been named as Diarmuid Hayes, who worked as an assistant to Mr Flanagan in Brussels from 2018 to 2019. Saoirse McHugh and Emma Sheeran, an assistant of the MEP, have been named as victims in the case. Mr Hayes has yet to enter a plea. The case, which is understood to revolve around two alleged breaches of Belgian law, was adjourned until
January 3rd of next year because Mr Hayes’ lawyer must appear at the Brussels terror attacks trial. Mr Flanagan appeared at the hearing in the Palais de Justice on Monday with members of his family. He had previously said his Twitter account had been hacked and an “extremely damaging” message was posted before being deleted. He said this was done by a third party and “against my will and knowledge”.

MINISTER MCENTEE OPENS NEW-LOOK ATHLEAGUE CENTRE…
Wind Turbine Action Group vows to fight on
The Kilcash Wind Turbine Action Group has said it remains steadfast in its opposition to any plans to construct a wind turbine in the Kilcash-Farbreagues area of County Roscommon.
The group held a public meeting on Wednesday, August 30th in Knockcroghery to discuss a new application for the construction of a turbine in the area. The latest application is seeking permission to erect a turbine with an 81-metre tower and tip height of over 149 metres.
The application, received on August 17th, also includes the installation of a hard standing area, underground cabling, and a substation.
Natural Forces Renewable Energy lost its An Bord Pleanála appeal last September to overturn a Roscommon County Council decision to refuse planning for a 150-metre turbine at Kilcash.
The current application is
described as ‘incomplete’ but a spokesperson for the Kilcash Wind Turbine Action Group said members expect the application to be resubmitted shortly.
The spokesperson has called on residents in the area to unite against the proposal and said the meeting on Wednesday of last week was very positive.
“There was a really good turnout at Culleen Hall and we are united on this. The community is very much against this proposal and are quite upset and angry about this,” the spokesperson said.
“We are steadfast in our view that the impact on the environment remains the same and we are calling on neighbours and local residents to make as many submissions as they can opposing this”.
The Kilcash Wind Turbine Action Group has called on the local community to come together in opposition to the proposed wind turbine and claims there has so far been no engage-
ment from Natural Forces.
Natural Forces Renewable Energy Limited have been
contacted for comment but none was forthcoming at the time of going to press.
Fitzmaurice welcomes firefighter agreement

Among the proposals are a minimum of 12 retained firefighters per station, with six available to respond, and an increase in staff numbers of approximately 20 per cent. 50 additional promotional positions will also be created.
Cllr Fitzmaurice said: “I welcome this agreement and hope we can now start the recruitment process for the reopening of Castlerea Fire Station”.

LOCAL TOWNS TO HOST ‘MAKE WAY DAY’ EVENTS
A number of towns around County Roscommon are to stage public events to highlight ‘Make Way Day on Friday, September 22nd – in a new campaign aimed at highlighting the problems that people with disabilities sometimes experience on our footpaths and streets.
Make Way Day is an annual campaign that brings the disability and wider community together to consider the needs of people with disabilities in the public spaces we all share.
It is led by the Disability Federation of Ireland and is a unique collaboration across Ireland and the voluntary and local government sectors. Most of all it’s about people with disabilities, but everyone can get involved.
This year’s campaign will feature a number of events in County Roscommon including a street demonstration in Roscommon town, Castlerea, Ballaghaderreen, Boyle, and Strokestown.
All local groups are invited to participate. Organisers have compiled a ‘terrible top three’ list of obstacles that stop people with disabilities in their tracks: 1 Cars parked on footpaths; 2 Bicycles illegally parked; 3 Bins left on footpaths.
“Make Way Day is not about pointing the finger at local authorities, other agencies, or randomly scattered activism,” said Linda Devine of Roscommon LEADER Partnership.
“The whole point of the day is making the public aware of an issue that is fully within their power to change. It’s about one impactful, coordinated and decisive day of action.
“Leading the charge are people with disabilities, local authorities, and disability organisations armed with an online tool that was specifically designed for Make Way Day. ‘Hey, this blocks my way’ is our message”.
As part of the day of action on Friday, September 22nd, obstacles that block the way and complicate the lives of people with disabilities 365 days of the year are highlighted and photos and videos are taken and posted and shared on social media.
The event is supported by Roscommon LEADER Partnership SICAP, the Roscommon Accessibility Group, and 29 local authorities (http://makewayday.com/). The campaign was phenomenally successful last year, reaching over one million people on social media and appearing on RTÉ news bulletins across the day.

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK
A column by Roscommon People editor paul@roscommonpeople.ie
On holidays in France, our village was quintessentially French (which makes sense). It was very quiet, but we’re well accustomed to that by now. In the garden of the gîte we’d rented, the only sound punctuating the silence on lazy, sunny evenings was the rustling of birds that had made their homes in the chimneys of adjoining properties. A couple of times every night, two pigeons fought/ played deep in the web of branches on one particularly majestic tree in our garden. They made quite a racket.
Not a lot happens in rural France. Some days, you wonder where the inhabitants are hiding out. But this was a beautiful village, with quaint cobblestone streets, picturesque, colourful buildings – the architecture stunning – and a charming square sprinkled with pretty, characterfilled art galleries. At its heart, as ever in France, stood a majestic church. Every day, an old man sat in the narrow doorway of his tiny home, a kitten by his side, both of them watching the world go by. They didn’t appear to have a care in the world.
We had no big expectations about the ‘Nuit Blanche’ (White Night) which the local café had modestly advertised. I’d popped in the day before to book a table for five. The conversation was part-English, part-French. It wasn’t ideal that the restaurant manager spoke the English, while I spoke the French. But we worked it out.
Next evening, our hosts were setting up tables and bunting when we arrived. This would be a street party. In fact, the ‘centre-ville’ was closed to traffic (such as it is). They had a warm welcome for their Irish guests. By 8.30 pm, there were 40 or 50 locals there. A lady (on guitar) began entertaining us with a mix of popular French and English songs. Most guests wore some white, it being Nuit Blanche.
Earlier that day, we had noticed a lady – probably in her 60s – gracefully moving through the village on an electric scooter. She had bowed to us. Now she was our waitress. Earlier, her demeanour had reminded me of Nanny McPhee, of Disney movie renown – substitute scooter for walking stick – but we ‘christened’ her Daisy. Well, to ourselves. We
quickly developed a great rapport with her. Another character we had noticed earlier in the week was an extremely pale-faced man who wore all black and looked like a hard-living rock star. He tended to glide from the shadows, appearing around corners, while being perfectly pleasant (if mysterious).
Up to 10 pm, it was a quiet gathering… guests chatting while enjoying pizzas, assorted meats on a platter, wine and some local beer. An inquisitive cat kept watch while strolling across a rooftop.
Then, all changed. The young couple running the café followed up the live music by setting up speakers which blasted out hits. Suddenly, guests sprung up from their tables and…began dancing on them. Entire groups took to the street and began performing dances in sequence. The police called, two officers parking up and approaching the cordoned off area. The café owners had a reassuring word with them, and
they left. In contrast, the cat on the roof stayed.
As we savoured the transformed atmosphere, I asked ‘Daisy’ – our waitress – if she could bring us our food bill. “No problemo!” she exclaimed, with a dramatic twirl (yes, it’s more of a Spanish-English phrase). Ten minutes passed, without Daisy or the bill. Then we noticed her dancing energetically in the middle of a group of guests, while also drinking. Meanwhile, the landlady was leading the dance moves on a table. We ordered another drink, for this was unmissable. Man In Black – he was oblivious to the ‘white’ theme of the night – continued to float from one group to another, mingling with fellow locals, sipping his drink.
The table in front of us suddenly erupted, the middle-aged patriarchtype figure belting out a rock song, mic in hand. A younger man lifted his girlfriend/partner into the air and spun her around, in apparent homage to the
Recently…
Best of luck to show stalwart John O’Beirne and his fellow volunteers as they prepare to host this Saturday’s Strokestown Show. It’s one of the great agricultural shows nationwide.
I have fond memories of attending on and off since circa 1979, when the great showjumper Harvey Smith (accidentally, as far as I know) shoulder-charged me while striding towards his horse. Uncharacteristically apologetic, he then gave me his autograph, having turned down dozens of other requests. We’ve been friends ever since (not).
Speaking of shows, Elphin was ‘blessed with the weather’ last Saturday; the Roscommon People was there to take some photos. Roscommon Show, meanwhile, has been rescheduled for September 16th.
Patrick Swayze/Jennifer Grey scene in Dirty Dancing. They knocked over a bit of bunting, but in fairness presumably hadn’t rehearsed. In front of them, a woman fell off her chair but was quickly back in position.
By now, the young landlady had taken a break from dancing and was serving complimentary tequila to guests with a ladle (from a large container). Man in Black didn’t miss out.
When we went inside to pay the bill, the landlady almost cried with joy as she told us her friend – sitting at the lively table in front of us all night – had just announced she was expecting a baby.
With the party wrapping up, a two-minute walk had us home by 11.30 (late for France). By the time we called it a night, the pigeons in our garden were fast asleep. There wasn’t a sound in the village, except perhaps for a happy Daisy purring home on her scooter.
Honestly, the press releases that come into this office…
‘You can now get paid €46.29 an hour to watch cricket’ read an email that pinged in earlier this week. My immediate reaction was: €46.29 an hour isn’t likely to be enough to tempt most Irish sports fans to consider the offer. Am I out of touch? In my youth we loved to (lazily) dismiss cricket as The Sport We Cannot Watch. The hired hand(s) can watch the Asia Cup from their living room, and get paid for recording various score details. Top tips from Slimming World to keep your heart healthy
Heart disease is one of our most widespread health problems. According to Croí, the west of Ireland cardiac foundation, approximately 9,000 people die each year from cardiovascular disease – including coronary heart disease, stroke, etc. Weight can be a major contributing factor in heart and circulatory diseases. Local Slimming World consultants want to share some ways to keep your heart healthy…
Lose weight
Pauline Bliss, who runs the Slimming World group in Hannon’s Hotel in Roscommon, says, “Losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight can significantly reduce the risk of developing heart disease and can also help reduce high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which are both associated with increased risk.
“Eating more healthily and getting more active are known to improve heart health, yet we know changing habits that have formed over years – sometimes decades – takes time. The in-depth support and encouragement shared at our weekly Slimming World groups is what helps our members to make long-term behaviour changes. Our programme is built on a deep understanding of how people with a weight problem feel, coupled with a healthy eating plan based on the science of energy density and satiety”.
Support heart health
Carol Doran Joyce, who runs the group in Ballybay Community
Hall in Kiltoom, says, “Tackle your weight. Being a healthy weight is one of the key things you can do to support your heart health, and even a small change can make a big difference. Losing just 5% of your body weight can reduce the risk of heart disease and could play a significant role in preventing treatable heart conditions.
“Also, limit your salt intake. Eating too much salt can increase the risk of high blood pressure, which in turn is a risk factor for heart disease. Check salt levels on labels – adults are recommended to limit their daily salt intake to no more than 6g a day”.
‘Cut down on fat’
Trish Keegan, who runs the groups in Gleeson’s Restaurant in Roscommon and the GAA Centre in Castlerea, says, “Cut down on fat. High intakes of saturated fat (for example fatty meats, butter, cakes, pastries) can lead to high cholesterol levels and weight gain. You can limit this type of fat by eating fewer foods
high in saturated fat, and choosing lean meat, such as 5% fat mince, trimming the fat off bacon and other fatty cuts of meat, and taking off any skin on poultry.
“Fill up on fibre. Support a healthy heart by choosing plenty of fruit and veg (skin on for extra fibre!) and higher fibre starchy carbs such as skin-on potatoes, wholewheat pasta and brown rice. As well as keeping our digestive systems working well, fibre can help with satisfying our appetite (helping with weight management), plus some fibre-containing foods are particularly good for our cholesterol levels, such as oats, beans, peas and lentils”.
Aisling’s advice
Aisling Anderson, who runs the groups in The Fiddler’s Elbow in Ballaghaderreen, says, “Eat fish twice a week. White fish such as hake, cod or haddock are a really lean source of protein while oily fish like sardines, mackerel and salmon provide protein and are
a great source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Omega 3 has been linked to a lower risk of heart disease, through helping to prevent blood clots, improve blood circulation, lower blood pressure, and reduce triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood).
“Get active! A lower risk of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease are just a few of the benefits which come with moving more and sitting less. Getting active in any way you fancy is beneficial, so whether you get outdoors for a walk or cycle, pop to the gym for a swim or exercise class or keep on top of the housework or gardening at home, it all counts! And last, but not least, stop smoking!”
New consultant
New consultant Breanne Farrell will launch the Slimming World group in the GAA Centre in Strokestown this Saturday, the 9th of September, at 9.30 am. She says, “In my career as a Practice Nurse, I have seen a sharp increase in the prevalence of obesity and obesity-associated chronic diseases over the past ten years.
“When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamt that I would end up helping other people to lose weight, but now, I just can’t get wait to get started. It’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the understanding, insight and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to their ideal target weight”.

Grill the salmon for ten to twelve minutes, turning once, until firm and just cooked through. Scatter the tomatoes around the fish for the last two or three minutes of cooking time.
At the same time, spray a large non-stick wok or frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and put it over a high heat. Add the lime zest, garlic, chilli flakes and the spinach and stir-fry for four to five minutes or until just wilted. Evergreen Fields celebrates 30 years in business this year
Evergreen Fields is a familyrun business established in 1993, operating from the west of Ireland. Having recently celebrated 30 years in business, the company has grown to be one of the largest and most respected companies for organic waste removal, treatment, and re-use in the country.
It all started 30 years ago, when Martin Smyth bought his first truck and set up a small business offering a service of general haulage. The company has since expanded from a one-man, one vehicle business, to a major competitor in the transport and haulage industry.
Today, Martin’s son Stephen has taken over the company and now operates an extensive modern fleet providing a range of services nationwide, including transport of liquid and biosolids, nutrient management plans, storage, liming, land spreading and anaerobic digestion.
RICH FERTILISER
The all-time high cost of conventional fertiliser has farmers looking at alternatives. One of these is biosolids from wastewater treatment plants, which promote similar plant growth and quality responses at a fraction of the cost.
When biosolids are spread on agricultural land, they add nutrients, improve soil and
Applying biosolids to land has economic and waste management benefits, since it saves space in landfills, recycles a waste product and reduces demand for conventional fertilisers.
Evergreen Fields has been assessed and registered as meeting the requirements of ISO 9001 Quality Management System, ISO 14001 Environmental System and ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System.

Circular Road resurfacing to ‘be completed next month’
< DAN DOONER
Uisce Éireann has issued a statement confirming that major roadworks currently being carried out on the Circular Road in Roscommon town will be completed by the end of next month. This follows a number of complaints from local residents and motorists over the timing of resurfacing works on the Racecourse Road just outside the county town. The works led to increased traffic delays at peak times following the recent reopening of schools. Works on Circular Road,
The Walk, and Galway Road are expected to be completed by the end of October.
The company says the works are part of the wider Roscommon Main Drainage Scheme aimed at reducing the risk of sewer flooding in the county town while eliminating non-compliant sewer overflows into the local River Jiggy.
Part of the Uisce Éireann statement read: “When carrying out any construction work in public areas, Uisce Éireann and our contractors always give top priority to the safety of the public and our staff.
“All remaining road reinstatement on Circular Road, The Walk and Galway Road will be car-
ried out at night-time to minimise the impact on the local community. All works are expected to be
complete by the end of October.
“We are acutely aware that upgrades and improvement works to the water and wastewater network can be disruptive to the local community. We would like to thank you and the local community, for your continued patience and support while we continue to deliver water services for Ireland for the benefit of current and future generations.
“If members of the public have any concerns or queries about works, they should contact the customer care team on 1800278278”.

FRANK BRANDON
FRANK BRANDON’S unique take on life ...
Giving prime airtime to Gilligan an insult to memory of Veronica
Our man Frank on the controversial media platform which has been given to criminal John Gilligan; The undermining of Vera Pauw, and the overlooking of local rugby star Denis Buckley…
Now and again over the last number of years we have gone on holidays to Spain, to the lovely seaside village of Cabo Roig.
One of the many great things about Spain is the number of markets that are to be found all around
the place. Within easy access of the house we stayed in, there was a market a couple of miles away in San Pedro on Mondays, Cabo Roig itself on Thursdays, and a very big one in Playa Flamenca on Saturdays.
Playa Flamenca is about a 10/15 minute walk from us, and over the years we visited it fairly regularly. While there, we would often have a coffee and maybe a scone in a fine pub called The Judges Chamber. However, at some stage we learnt that the pub was owned by the notorious criminal John Gilligan, and even though our custom wouldn’t make or break the very popular business, we took the conscious decision that we would no longer go to it or support it. We felt that
by visiting it we were, in a small way, condoning his criminal activities.
Everyone in Ireland (and much further afield) would be well aware of Gilligan’s unlawful life and times, and of his alleged involvement in the murder of investigative journalist Veronica Guerin. So the decision of Virgin Media to do a three-part documentary on his life seems to me to be an insult to Veronica’s memory. Gilligan also has a new book out, ‘The Gilligan Tapes’, which the Star newspaper is serialising, so it’s safe to assume that not only is the former crime boss getting undeserved publicity, but he is probably getting a fair few bob as well.
Jimmy Guerin, brother of the murdered jour-
Overlooking Denis
With World Cup mania about to explode around the rugby playing world, and the game set to take centre stage for the next two months or so, the Irish team headed off to France last Thursday –and the biggest talking point was the enforced absence of experienced prop forward Cian Healy.
As we look forward (if that’s the right word) to facing up to the awesome scrummaging power of the Springboks, and possibly the French later on, the loss of Healy has certainly put a dampener on our hopes of progressing through the tournament. And for me, it raises, yet again, the thorny question of the non-selection of Denis Buckley.
For those who don’t know it, Buckley has been the cornerstone of the Connacht senior rugby team for twelve or thirteen years now, and in that time he has made more than 200 appearances for the western province and has been up against the very best club and international props – and never been found wanting. Yet, we have all watched as successive Irish management teams
have ignored his claims. In my opinion, vastly inferior props have got international call-ups. As we headed off to France last week prior to our opening game against Romania, Buckley was left sitting at home, while the inexperienced Jeremy Loughman, Tom O’Toole, and elder
statesman Dave Kilcoyne (who has had recent injury problems) all got the nod ahead of him. I have nothing against any of those players, but I feel we will regret the decision to go without the Roscommon (also Creggs) man. As I’ve said before, I don’t understand how no one has given
him a chance to prove himself at the highest level. However, all that said, let’s hope the Irish lads do us proud over in France. Please God we will finally get as far as a semi-final. Whatever the outcome, it promises to be a great few weeks of top quality sport!
nalist, said, “It is more than disappointing that a national television broadcaster, producers, publishers, and journalists chose to give airtime to, and to publish, this book” – and I fully agree with him.
I have never hidden my fascination for criminals and their crimes, and I have watched several films about Gilligan and also the notorious Martin ‘The General’ Cahill. However, as we all know, films will romanticise and exaggerate stories to woo the audience – which is fair enough –but to actually allow Gilligan to tell his own story (as he sees it) on national television goes against the grain. I, for one, will find something else to look at when it’s on.
In fond memory of Annie
The Creggs I grew up in back in the 1950s was a very different place to the one we know today.
As I told you before, we used to have several more pubs and shops –you could buy everything from a fancy suit to a pound of nails, and you could even get your own locally-made coffin.
All of the shops had their own full-time staff, and we knew them all.
All of them went out of their way to be kind to us young children and each of them looked out for us.
her family, friends and relations. May she rest in heavenly peace.
It’s been a particularly sad week out this part of the world in fact, with the sudden passing of Glinsk’s Colm Ward, and the recent death of Rosaleen Kenny, which has stunned the local community in Ballygar. To everyone in the extended Ward and Kenny families, our sincere sympathy on your sad losses. May Colm and Rosaleen also rest in peace.

Poor treatment of Vera
Staying with sport, but switching to soccer: not for the first time, I believe the FAI have made a big mistake, this time in dispensing with the services of the manager of the Irish ladies’ team, Vera Pauw.
Despite denials by everyone involved, including Pauw, there seems little doubt that player power played a big part in her downfall, and I think it sets a very dangerous precedent. The truth is that before Pauw came on the scene, the Irish ladies were a shambles of a team in terms of structure, organisation, and performance, and the way she turned them
into a highly-rated international side is almost miraculous. To get them to the recent World Cup, where they performed pretty well, was a massive achievement, and the way it helped get the Irish sporting public right behind them in the process should never be forgotten.
I hope this decision doesn’t come back to haunt her employers. There is no doubt we have a few world class players, but only a few, so to think we could play free-flowing, attractive football is a bit of a myth; Pauw realised our limitations, and by playing to our strengths moulded us into a team that
was hard to beat and defensively strong. All good managers build from the back, and the old adage of keeping the score down still holds true – keep the score down and you have less to score yourselves. Anyway, we’ll wait and see what happens now, but I for one will be less likely to support the team after the way Pauw was removed. Remarkably, the manager of the men’s team, Stephen Kenny, though a thoroughly nice man, but a manager with a much lesser success ratio than Pauw, seems to be untouchable in his position! It would make you wonder…
This all came into my mind last week when Annie Rattigan passed away. In some ways, her passing almost seems like the closure of my childhood years, as Annie was part of our lives for so long. She was always smiling and always cheerful in her many years of service in Kilby’s (Cunningham’s), and afterwards with Tom Doorey and Seamus Keane. Herself and her late husband, postman Tommy, were a big part of the local community for such a long time, meaning her passing brings that era to an end.
Annie was a real lady and will be a huge loss to her family and many friends. We send our sincere condolences to
And finally…
A Mass in memory of Conor Connelly will be held in St Patrick’s Cathedral, New York, on Friday, September 15th at 12.30 pm.
Conor, who sadly passed away in March 2020, was an outstanding player for Roscommon over many years, while he also played club football with distinction in Roscommon for both Creggs and Michael Glavey’s.
This will be an opportunity for people in the New York region to come together to remember Conor during this special Mass.

Own it, Check it and Sort it as part of the Croí Third Age Programme
Did you know that uncontrolled high blood pressure can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke? The Croí Third Age programme, which aims to promote healthy cardiovascular ageing, is delighted to partner with local pharmacies across Roscommon for the month of September, which is World Heart Month, to offer free blood pressure checks to anyone who has not had their blood pressure checked in the past year, with a particular focus on those over 55 years of age.
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, occurs when the force of the blood flowing through your blood vessels is consistently too high. This causes many harmful effects on the body, and if left untreated, can significantly increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. High blood pressure typically has no symptoms – the only way to find out if you have high blood pressure is to have it checked regularly (at least once a year).
“We are delighted to be extending our blood pressure awareness campaign to Roscommon this September, following the success of our previous campaigns in Mayo. The prevalence of high blood pressure in Ireland, particularly for people over the age

Road fatality increases show urgent need for more safety measures
Let’s talk about ...
URGENT NEED FOR ROAD SAFETY
(A student’s perspective)
Alannah Ita Healy
The last few days have seen the town of Clonmel and its environs come to a standstill, as funerals take place to mark the deaths of the four young people who died in a road traffic collision at the end of last month: Nicole Murphy (18), Zoey Coffey (18), and siblings Grace (18) and Luke McSweeney (24).
The crash occurred when, amid heavy rain, the car the four were travelling in flipped over and hit a wall on Clonmel’s Mountain Road. The three teenage girls had been on their way to celebrate their leaving certificate results in Carlow, being driven there by the older McSweeney.
When news of the crash came out, the entire country was, of course, both deeply shocked and incredibly saddened to learn of their passings. What struck a lot of people was the age of the victims and the circumstances under which they had been travelling. All four victims were so young to have lost their lives, but when it comes to the three teenagers, many have pointed out how especially saddening it was to note that the night they passed away should’ve been a night of celebration, a night symbolic of all they had ahead of them and the beginning of their adult lives.
It is the same heavy feeling the country experienced a few months ago when Leaving Cert students Andrew O’Donnell and Max Wall passed away. The two had gone on holiday with friends to the Greek island of Ios to celebrate the end of their exams, and died just hours apart, both aged just 18-years-old.
It goes without saying that any loss of life is a tragedy, regardless of the person’s age. But when the period of post-Leaving Cert holidays and exam results nights out brings with it the news of young students’ deaths, it of course feels like another cruel dimension to the tragedy. These students should’ve had their entire lives ahead of them and should’ve been able to celebrate that… to celebrate their Leaving Cert and the end of their second-level schooling,
without it having ended in the loss of their lives. And of course that’s another thing that goes without saying – that neither of these tragedies should’ve occurred. Just as it goes without saying that if anyone could’ve, they’d have done all they could to prevent them.
And while it is harder to imagine how to go about prevention measures for the likes of what happened in Greece, accidents like the recent Clonmel one might be a different story. While it is understood that heavy rainfall played a ‘significant role’ in leading to the Clonmel crash, technical investigators have also commented that they are continuing to examine several other potentially contributary factors, including the speed at which the car was travelling, the condition of the vehicle and its tyres, and the condition of the road. Whether these other road safety concerns came into play in any significant way is relevant beyond this tragedy; the deaths of these four young people in this road accident is not only brought home further due to the deaths of the students in Greece that preceded them earlier this summer, but also by the significant amount of fatal road accidents this year that also preceded the crash.
According to recent reports, 127 people have been killed in road traffic collisions so far in 2023. With nearly four months still to go, this year has almost reached the same number of road fatalities that 2022 reached in total (155) – the figure so far is 25% higher than at this point last year –and 2022 had already seen an increase of 13% on 2021. Even anecdotally, it’s hard not to notice the increase just from reading headlines; news of a road tragedy has barely sunk in before the next sad bulletin follows.
For example, when the Clonmel crash occurred, the country was still reeling from hearing about
the deaths of two teenage pupils and the fall-out following a crash in Monaghan, which occurred just a couple weeks previously. Last month in fact (when both road tragedies occurred) saw literally twice the amount of road fatalities recorded compared to August 2022.
Reportedly, the number of road deaths this year is on course to reach around 168, which would be the highest since 2016. And while it is worth noting that there has indeed been huge progress over the years in reducing fatalities, the RSA (Road Safety Authority) have warned that Ireland is in danger of losing momentum on improving road safety.
Given all this, this week saw Minister of State with responsibility for road safety Jack Chambers indicate that speed limits are going to be reduced as part of plans being developed by the Government to improve road safety. The clampdown will also include increasing the number of penalty points for motorists who are detected committing more than one driving offence, and additionally, more minor offences, such as the use of a mobile phone while driving and not using a seatbelt will be penalised more.
These changes are very welcome and undoubtedly reflective of recent RSA comments, which suggested a major factor that may be contributing to this recent increase (aside from the obvious spike in road traffic since the pandemic, during which there understandably were less incidents) might be careless driving practices. But as much as these measures are welcome and needed, it would be good to see more infrastructural solutions being implemented as well.
For example, last year it was found that the majority of road deaths occur on rural roads. As such, I think it is also important to focus on the issues that lead to this, like poor road surface conditions,
inadequate signage, and the lack of crash protection, such as barriers. Considering too that half of those injured seriously in road accidents last year were not drivers but pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, etc., looking at effective ways of improving footpaths and cycle lanes could do a lot to improve general road safety.
I also wonder if this is yet again another area that would benefit from improving public transport options and accessibility. If less cautious drivers are a major issue, surely an uptick in public transport use could drastically reduce the amount of distracted and inexperienced drivers on the roads. I also understand the RSA recently highlighted how drink-driving remains a significant problem, and while I by no means wish to suggest there’s any excuse for inebriated driving (there isn’t), I think there are a certain amount of people who ‘chance’ driving after the few because they simply can’t get a taxi, or because buses in their city stop too early. So perhaps if there was something done to increase public transport hours and support public service vehicles, drink-driving instances could easily be reduced.
I really do hope real infrastructural changes are put in place in the near future to tackle the issue of road fatalities in a more long-term way – but in the meantime, it is reassuring to at least see some road safety measures coming in in the short-term. After all, we can’t just continue seeing fatal road accident after fatal road accident in the headlines, and have little or nothing being done.
As anyone who’s lost someone will know, there is nothing that can be done now to assuage the grief being felt by the loved ones of the victims of the Clonmel crash, bar showing respect for their privacy as they mourn, just as is the case with all those who lost loved ones in other road accidents this year. But hopefully something can be done to avoid more accidents like this happening in the future and to break the trend of increased fatalities we’ve been seeing recently.
I cannot imagine what all those who knew the young Leaving Cert students, and all the victims of this year’s road fatalities, are going through, and like the rest of the country, my thoughts are with their families and friends as they grieve their loved ones. I hope that in the near future, whatever possible measures can be put in place to prevent further similar tragedies are implemented with urgency.

Ed to run 200 miles for good causes
< DAN DOONER
Tulsk dairy farmer and elite athlete, Ed Payne, will be lacing up his running shoes once again this weekend as he sets off on a mammoth 200-mile run in aid of Tulsk National School and South Roscommon Family Resource Centre. Ed’s run will take him from Shannon Harbour in County Offaly to the Grand Canal in Dublin before returning to Tulsk via the Royal Canal on Sunday afternoon, a distance of over 330kms.
The kind-hearted runner, who will be supported by wife Jennifer and sons Ben and Aaron this weekend, says this will be the longest run he has ever attempted.
“I’ll be setting off around six o’clock on Friday evening and running continuously throughout the weekend…apart from a few ‘disco naps’ here and there,” he said.
“The hardest part will be running in the depths of night at around 2 am to 4 am. But I am hoping to return to Tulsk National School some time on Sunday afternoon where there will be a bit of a party hopefully!”
Ed, who is a member of Sliabh Bán Athletics Club, is

“With old items still lying around many households we want to offer the opportunity to recycle these for free. People in Roscommon have contributed greatly to e-waste recycling every year, with 755 tonnes of electrical waste collected in the

Gospel Reflection
Sunday, September 10
As Ezekiel is appointed watchman over the house of Israel in today’s first Reading, so Jesus in the Gospel today establishes His disciples as guardians of the new Israel of God, the Church (see Galatians 6:16).
He also puts in place procedures for dealing with sin and breaches of the faith, building on rules of discipline prescribed by Moses for Israel (see Leviticus 19:17-20; Deuteronomy 19:13). The heads of the new Israel, however, receive extraordinary powers – similar to those given to Peter (see Matthew 16:19). They have the power to bind and loose, to forgive sins and to reconcile sinners in His name (see John 20:21-23).
But the powers He gives the Apostles and their successors depend on their communion with Him. As Ezekiel is only to teach what he hears God saying, so the disciples are to gather in His name and to pray and seek the will of our Heavenly Father.
But today’s readings are more than a lesson in Church order. They also suggest how we’re to deal with those who trespass against us, a theme that we’ll hear in next week’s readings as well.
Notice that both the Gospel and the First Reading presume that believers have a duty to correct sinners in our midst. Ezekiel is even told that he will be held accountable for their souls if he fails to speak out and try to correct them.
This is the love that Paul in today’s Epistle says we owe to our neighbours. To love our neighbours as ourselves is to be vitally concerned for their salvation. We must make every effort, as Jesus says, to win our brothers and sisters back, to turn them from the false paths.
We should never correct out of anger or a desire to punish. Instead, our message must be that of today’s Psalm – urging the sinner to hear God’s voice, not to harden their hearts, and to remember that He is the one who made us, the rock of our salvation.

Minister highlights NFD engagement
Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue has welcomed the level of engagement in the National Fertiliser Database with over 90,000 farmers having so far registered.
Farmers or other professional fertiliser end users who wish to purchase fertiliser, including lime, must be registered as a Professional Fertiliser End User with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. This can be done at www.agrifood.ie.
Commenting on what he described as “an exceptional level of engagement”, Minister McConalogue said: “I thank every farmer that has registered for the National Fertiliser Database. There has been phenomenal engagement with the new system by farmers and their agents which further demonstrates farmers willingness to embrace positive changes”.
Farmers told to push for more on beef prices
ICSA Beef Chair Edmund Graham has this week advised farmers to fight for the best prices possible as factory beef prices are hardening.
“This week has seen a marked change with factories actively looking for cattle and quotes have increased by as much as 10c/kg. It is now time for farmers to toughen when selling cattle and seek higher prices,” he said.
Mr Graham said prices have been far below the level paid in our export markets for most of

the summer and that factories have taken excess profit.
He also said the situation has been even more dire when Irish prices are compared to those in the UK.
“The last time we saw prices here on par with UK prices was back in January of this year. Since then, a significant price gap has opened, and UK prices have remained consistently higher than what is being offered to Irish producers,” he said.
ICSA satisfied with progress on deer management strategy
Hugh Farrell, the ICSA Animal Health and Welfare Chairperson, has said that he is encouraged by progress being made at the Deer Management Strategy Group.
“For too long now, the out-of-control deer population has been a major problem on several

fronts, including the spread of TB. I am hopeful that we are moving towards a plan which will include a dedicated program manager to coordinate and implement a strategy to bring deer numbers under control,” he said.
Mr Farrell added that a good level of consensus is emerging between all stakeholders on the need to control the deer population.
“The key issue now is to get Government agreement to fund the strategy, and this cannot be delivered soon enough. I am calling on Minister McConalogue to push very hard for the funding so that the work can begin in implementing a key aspect of getting TB under control,” he concluded.
Macra welcomes grass lie back u-turn
Macra has welcomed what it calls a u-turn on grass lie back area under the Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition (GAEC) regulations for catch crops.
Elaine Houlihan, Macra National President, has called for greater engagement with farm organisations around the regulations, stating that “active engagement” is key and greater work must be done to ensure avoidable consequences to regulation changes which are simply not practical.
“This has been a difficult year for the tillage sector, and many farmers have been working in good faith to implement these regulations at significant cost, not just in the cost of grass seed but also the additional mental strain,” she explained.

The work was designed to alleviate the threat of water outages in the area and Manager Declan Cawley said he was proud to have delivered the important project for the village.

We are proud to have delivered a project that will benefit the community for years to come,” he said.
‘VAT increase will close businesses’
The Restaurant Association of Ireland has slammed the Government’s decision to increase the 9 per cent VAT rate to 13 per cent, claiming the move will lead to the closure of businesses across the country.
The Chief Executive Restaurants Association of Ireland of the Restaurants Association of Ireland, Adrian Cummins, said: “The increase is wrong at a time when the country needs to reduce inflation. The Government needs to restore 9 per cent rate and we will be making the case for this when we meet with the Minister for Finance next week. The increase is the final nail in the coffin for many small cafes, restaurants and food led pubs”.

New single ‘I Am Your Healer’ out now
< DAN DOONER
From arranging flowers to arranging music, 24-year-old Roscommon singer and florist Ciara Lawless, works in her flower shop by day before writing and recording her own music by night!
Her new single ‘I Am Your Healer’ is available now from Human Angel Records and across all streaming services.
Ciara made her mark on the music industry with her debut single, ‘Half The Man’, in May of this year. Since then, she has been sharpening her stage skills over the summer while performing at various festivals including The Mná Festival at Dun na Sí, Co. Westmeath and The Lovestock Festival in Tuamgraney, Co. Clare.
With I Am Your Healer, Ciara delves into the profound themes of love, self-discovery, and healing. Set for release this September, the song promises to captivate hearts and
minds, leaving an indelible imprint on all who encounter its ethereal melodies.
Ciara told the Roscommon People this week that “this is only the beginning”, as she has plans to release a new album in May 2024.
Ciara writes and sings contemporary pop songs exploring modern themes of mindfulness and wellbeing. Her songs are easy listening folk-pop songs and feature acoustic guitar as the primary instrument, with melodic and catchy choruses. The songs are mellow and melodic, evoking a sense of nostalgia and exploring modern themes of mindfulness and wellbeing, delivered with Ciara’s particularly distinctive voice.
Ciara’s music journey began at a young age when she started taking classes in acting and singing. She later developed an interest in classical and opera, training at the Academy of Music in Tullamore, where she also competed in national and international competitions.
While some singers cut their teeth while climbing the music ladder, Ciara earned her stripes as a funeral singer before embarking on her current musical journey.
You can find Ciara’s music on all streaming platforms.
Boyle Musical Society start rehearsals
Rehearsals for Boyle Musical Society’s forthcoming production of the spellbinding musical, ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ are underway, having kicked off earlier this week (on Monday) in St Joseph’s Hall. Everybody is welcome to join up for twelve weeks of music, drama, and dancing – along with some serious fun. We are looking forward to seeing plenty of new and familiar faces, but please note that unfortunately there are no parts for students attending second level school this year.
With a sweeping score and a powerful story, ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ has already become a classic. Audiences will be spirited away by the magic of this truly unforgettable musical, which will be staged from November 22nd to 25th
If anybody is considering taking a leading part in the show, we hope to audition for these roles during the first weeks. Please visit our Facebook page, where there are links to some of the songs that you may wish to become familiar with.
For more information on Boyle Musical Society, please follow us on Facebook or visit our website, boylemusicalsociety. com.

Commercial opportunity in Strokestown: A chair in your dream salon without the ‘set-up’ stress
This week, Cox & Walsh Estate Agents spoke to the Roscommon People about a unique commercial opportunity in Strokestown; the property known as Jazel – located on Church Street, Strokestown – is offering a fantastic opportunity for start-up solopreneurs in the hair and beauty sector.
It’s not every day that the commercial property market throws you a curveball of an opportunity quite like this one. If you’re a hairstylist, nail technician, or make-up artist tired of the solitary rigor of a home set-up, or the ever-increasing costs of operating an entire salon on your own, Cox & Walsh Estate Agents have got great news for you with this opportunity – available for hire in Strokestown, Co Roscommon, are chairs in a modern, fully equipped salon.
Why is this a golden opportunity?
Well, the best part is there’s no longterm contract to ‘lock’ you in. These chairs can be hired on a daily, weekly, or even monthly basis. All utility costs are rolled into a competitive, all-inclusive hire fee, so you don’t have to worry about the nitty-gritty of electricity bills or water rates. The only thing you need to have is your own insurance policy.
With regards to the current occupants, the salon is already home to an independent hairdresser and a beautician, providing a fertile environment for professionals to grow and collaborate. It’s the perfect low-stress, high-reward scenario if you’re looking to break free from your current workspace or want
to establish your practice without the strain of start-up costs.
If you’re unfamiliar with Strokestown, you might be wondering why you should consider relocating your business here. It’s worth noting that Strokestown is touted as the best small town in Ireland for business expansion or startups. The town offers exceptional connectivity, including a fantastic road network and public transport links, as well as 100 Mbps high-speed broadband.
Not only does Strokestown offer a supportive community, but the quality of life is also unparalleled. The cost of living and property rates are some of the lowest in Ireland, making it an ideal location to both live and work in.
What’s more, the town has additional perks such as being situated in the lush Irish countryside close to the River Shannon. Known for its rich heritage and an annual influx of over 60,000 tourists, Strokestown is also a hop, skip, and jump from 40+ lakes and some of the most scenic walks Ireland has to offer.
So the verdict is, if you’re a professional in the beauty industry looking for a step-up without the financial headache, this is a moment you can’t afford to let slip by. Reach out to Cox & Walsh Estate Agents for more information on how you can make this your next smart business move.
To discuss this fantastic opportunity, phone Cox & Walsh Estate Agents on 071 9658600.

4th Anniversary (10th September)
Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow, I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain, I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush, I am in the graceful rush.
Of beautiful birds in circling flight, I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom, I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there. I do not die.
Mam, our love is with you too.
Anne, Mike, Eugene and Joe.

THANKSGIVINGS
THE MIRACULOUS PRAYER
Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked you for many favours. This time I ask this special one. (mention it). Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times, for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted. G.F.
To those who formed Guards of Honour for Claire on both days outside our home, we will never forget the love and support.
Thank you to those who brought food to our home and those who looked after traffic management.
A special thank you to Fr. Willi Brord who celebrated Claire’s Funeral Mass and Burial with empathy and compassion. Thank you to Eimear Reynolds for the beautiful music at the Church and to everyone who prepared the church.
We would also like to thank Pat McHugh (Undertaker) for his professionalism, support and help shown to us at such a difficult time.
Thank you to Dr. Nuala Hardiman and Dr. Annette Rogers who looked after Claire so well over the years. Sincere thanks to Andrew Reynolds for the beautiful catering which he provided and who helped us in every way that he could with the arrangements. Thank you to the Community Centre in Rooskey for the use of the facilities.
To the paramedics and ambulance crews who tended to Claire on the day, we sincerely thank you.
And finally, to all the grave diggers who prepared Claire’s final resting place with such care and attention we would like to say thank you so much.
As it is impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as a token of our heartfelt thanks and appreciation. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions.

Auchcloggeen, Claregalway, Co. Galway. Late of Athleague, Co. Roscommon and formerly of Curry, Co. Sligo. Who passed away on 22nd September 2022)
On this First Anniversary of dear Teresa we remember her as a loving wife, sister, aunt and an enduring friend to so many people. Teresa was devoted to her husband, siblings and her large family circle. She loved life and lived it to the full every day. She gathered every one she met into this beautiful experience of life. She was such a happy, caring and generous person. Teresa was always thinking of others, a beautiful Christian virtue. In her chosen profession as a nurse, working in Public Health, Teresa felt fulfilled in her life. She loved the welcome she received in people’s home’s and she cared for them with love, service and dedication. The many stories of this were a great source of consolation to the family at the time of Teresa’s funeral. Her nursing colleagues were a great source of comfort to the family at the time of Teresa’s passing and organised a beautiful Mass and celebration of her life in Ahascragh, Co Galway.

Buccaneers duo Robbie Henshaw and Finlay Bealham have been named in Ireland’s 33-man squad for the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Head Coach Andy Farrell’s squad departed on Thursday last for France where their base camp will be in Tours. Connacht success
Congratulations to the five Creggs girls who were part of the Connacht U-18 team which won the Interpro Series for the first time ever recently.
Jemima Adams Verling, Merisa Kiripati, Siofra Hession, Ciara Corrigan and team captain Sarah Purcell were part of a Connacht team which enjoyed a 100 per cent record with victories over Munster, Ulster and Leinster. Last Saturday’s 19-15 win over Leinster at Corinthians RFC secured the series.
The full-time whistle last sparked joyous scenes by the large vocal support from Creggs which included parents, siblings, two past Creggs Rugby Presidents, and the current President Dave Purcell.
Underage training
The Boys’ U-17 team train on Wednesdays at 8.15 pm. New players welcome and coaching for all levels is available.
Speaking of the U-17s, Creggs players Liam Butler and Leo Anic represented Connacht in their recent Interpro match against Munster. Leo scored a great try in the game and their participation shows the level Creggs’ youth players are playing to.

Roscommon Ladies in search of new manager
The Roscommon Intermediate Ladies football team is in search of a new manager following the departure of Ollie Lennon from the role earlier this week.

HLB Ireland announces Richael Timothy sponsorship
< DAN DOONER
A leading advisory and accounting firm has this week announced a new sponsorship deal with Ballymoe paracyclist Richael Timothy.
HLB Ireland said the partnership “reinforces its commitment to supporting exceptional athletes and fostering a diverse and inclusive society”.
Speaking about the sponsorship
Mark Butler, Managing Partner of HLB Ireland, added: “We are delighted to support Richael Timothy and her remarkable journey. At HLB Ireland, we believe in empowering individuals to reach their fullest potential, and Richael embodies the spirit of determination. We are inspired by her achievements and
look forward to supporting her continued success”.
Commenting on the new partnership, Richael Timothy said: “I am extremely grateful to HLB Ireland for their belief in me and their commitment to empowering athletes. This sponsorship will enable me to focus on my training and compete at the highest level. I am excited to represent HLB Ireland as I strive to achieve my goals and inspire others along the way”.
Richael recently returned from the the UCI Cycling World Championships in Scotland on a high having picked up two bronze medals. The C3 competitor finished third in the scratch race and, thanks to that performance, sealed third place overall in the multi-event Omnium.
first of the SHC semi-finals on Saturday evening. Shane Curley’s men have been in tremendous form this year and they have swept all comers out of the way in their march into the last four.
Tremane looked like they could have been in danger of going out of the championship at one stage a few weeks ago but they have dug in and recorded two good wins against Pádraig Pearses and St Dominic’s.
When the sides met in the championship earlier in the year Four Roads won by 18 points, but in fairness to Tremane they have been far
more competitive in recent games with the likes of Peter Kellehan, Niall Kilroy, Joe Brennan and Michael Brennan all playing well. But Four Roads have been in sparkling form all year and it would be a massive shock if they were not to win with a bit to spare.
Prediction: Four Roads
Athleague v Oran on Sunday at 2 pm
Athleague will start as strong favourites for this second semi-final but Oran have always been able to
give them a game in the championship and this could be a closely fought game.
Cathal Kenny and Paddy Fallon are very dangerous in attack for Ciaran Farrell’s men and they could be the Oran trump cards on Sunday. However, Athleague look strong all around the field and they have been impressive under Gary Fallon and they won easily when the sides met earlier in the group games. Oran could give Athleague plenty to think about but it looks like a Four Roads and Athleague final. Prediction: Athleague

Carthy penalty gets Gaels out of jail!
Roscommon Gaels 1-9 St Faithleach’s 1-8
< SEAMUS DUKE
With this Hodson Bay SFC match going into time added on, St Faithleach’s were leading by two points and heading into the quarter-finals of the championship while Roscommon Gaels were on their way.
They Ballyleague outfit even had a free out to run down the clock and keep the Gaels at arm’s length, but after a bout of pushing and shoving, referee James Murray reversed his decision, and instead decided to throw up
the ball. What happened next changed the course of this year’s senior club championship.
The Gaels won possession and John McManus was fouled in the large square with Murray rightly awarding a penalty. Gaels sub Rory Carthy buried the spot kick and Frankie Dolan’s men had qualified for the quarterfinals in the most dramatic of circumstances.
They still had to withstand some intense Faithleach’s pressure afterwards as they came looking for a winning goal, but James Featherstone made a brilliant late save at the death to deny the Ballyleague men.
Played in perfect weather conditions in Knockcroghery, the
first half was a forgettable affair with both sides ultra cautious. There were only two points from play in the entire half (one for each side) as the Gaels went in leading by 0-4 to 0-2 at halftime.
But the second half was a much livelier affair as both sides upped the ante with a big prize on offer for the winners. Faithleach’s were the better team on the resumption and in the 33rd minute Diarmuid Murtagh got in for a well-taken goal and after that it was tense all the way to the finish. Faithleach’s led by three points with 12 minutes to go but The Gaels kept going and they were rewarded late on.

Éire Óg remain on track!
As the groups stages of the Callington Ltd Intermediate Football Championship reached their conclusion, Seamus Duke takes a look back on a weekend which saw Éire Óg maintain their unbeaten record in Group A, while Niall Kilroy came up trumps for Fuerty in their top of the table clash with St Croan’s in Group B…
Group A
Éire Óg continued their impressive unbeaten run when they were the comfortable winners against Kilmore with Conor
Cox their main scorer once again. Kilmore will now face a relegation battle. Shannon Gaels are also through comfortably. They bagged four goals against St Brigid’s in a highscoring match on Saturday.
Group B
In the battle of the top two in the group, Fuerty snatched a late win against St Croan’s with Niall Kilroy scoring the winning point late on. In the other game, Kilbride avoided a relegation battle as they defeated St Aidan’s by four points at Lisnamult.
Group C
Castlerea St Kevin’s topped the group after a very comfortable win against Pádraig Pearses. Best performance of the weekend in the IFC was from Elphin who were very impressive against Creggs with Shane Killoran and Fintan Cregg prominent.
Note: In the Intermediate relegation battle, Kilmore play St Aidan’s and the losers will play Creggs. In the play-offs for the remaining quarter-final place, Pádraig Pearses have a bye into the last eight while St Brigid’s will play Kilbride this weekend.
contribution for The Gaels, scoring 1-3 off the bench including that last-gasp penalty and the town side can also be very thankful to their goalkeeper James Featherstone who made a number of crucial saves on the day.
Frankie Dolan’s men may have got out of jail here but they are in the last eight and now they can prepare for a quarter-final local derby against Oran. For Faithleach’s, it was a case of what might have been as their season comes to an end.

Boyle return to form to reach last eight
Hodson Bay Group SFC (Group A)
Boyle 0-21
Western Gaels 1-12
< SEAMUS DUKE
Boyle left their inconsistent form behind them in Croghan on Sunday when they blitzed Western Gaels with some superb attacking play and now they will go into their quarter-final clash with Clann na nGael full of confidence after this excellent display. The conditions were perfect for this must win game for both sides, and Boyle set about their task early with some excellent scores. Donie Smith and Cian McKeon were outstanding with both players scoring 0-7 (six each from play), and some of those points were right out of the top drawer.
Western Gaels battled away gamely but they had no answer to Boyle on the day. With Enda Smith controlling the game at midfield, and Donie, Cian McKeon and Daire Cregg on fire up front, Boyle never looked in trouble and they led 0-11 to 0-5 at half-time.
Quarter-final pairings confirmed
The Hodson Bay Group Senior Football Championship quarter-final pairings are now confirmed following last weekend’s final group games. Here, Seamus Duke takes a look back on how it all unfolded…
Group A (see match reports)
Group B
St Dominic’s almost pulled off a sensational result against Pádraig Pearses, going down by just a single point in the end. An early goal ensured that Dominic’s were well in the match from the start, and by half-time Pearses led by the bare minimum, 0-7 to 1-3. Another goal early in the second half saw Dominic’s back in the game and indeed the Knockcroghery men took the lead with 12 minutes to go. But late points from Eoin Colleran and Hubert Darcy were enough to see Pearses through.
Championship favourites St Brigid’s were the comfortable winners against Michael Glavey’s in Ballinlough.
The home side led early on but at half-time, Brigid’s led narrowly by 0-5 to 0-3 after a low-key opening period. Eventually Brigid’s pulled away helped by the only goal of the game from Brian Derwin in the 43rd minute.
Group C
Tulsk consigned neighbours Strokestown to relegation battle when they had a single point to spare in Ballyforan (see match report) on Friday night.
Meanwhile, Clann na nGael continued their good form with a third win on the trot, this time against Oran. Fearghus Lennon was impressive once again and scored 0-7 as Pat Fallon’s side breezed into the last eight.
Note: The SFC quarter-finals are as follows: Oran v Roscommon Gaels, Clann na nGael v Boyle, St Brigid’s v North Roscommon, Pádraig Pearses v West Roscommon. Those games will be played on the weekend of September 22nd/23rd.
There was a brief window of opportunity for Western Gaels in the 41st minute when Tadgh McKenna was black carded for a foul on Cathal Cregg, and then Dylan East was shown a red card for his part in the scuffle that followed. But despite being down to 13 men, Boyle dug in and held on to possession very cleverly.
Western Gaels scored a late consolation goal through Dylan Kennedy but the game was over as a contest long before that. Tulsk condemn champions to relegation battle
Hodson Bay Group SFC (Group C)
Tulsk 1-8
Strokestown 0-10
< SEAMUS DUKE
The 2022 county senior champions Strokestown are now facing a battle to stay in the senior ranks after this one-point defeat against Tulsk in what was a very competitive and hard-fought local derby played in perfect conditions in Ballyforan on Friday night.
Tulsk played second fiddle to Strokestown for most of the first half but a goal, finished by Robbie Kelly in stoppage time, sent the sides in level. Tulsk were the better side in a very tense second half and they held out to win despite a late surge from the champions.
There were plenty of scores in the opening five minutes as the sides shared four points, but the scoring rate slowed after that, and Tulsk were not to score again for 28 minutes, as Strokestown looked the sharper team.
Points from Cathal Lavin, Diarmuid McGann and Ciaran Regan saw ‘The Town’ ahead by 0-5 to 0-2. But just before the
interval, Kieran Donoghue made a great run into the Strokestown defence and the ball ended up in the net, fisted home by Robbie Kelly. The sides went in level, Strokestown 0-5 Tulsk 1-2.
The goal obviously gave Tulsk a huge boost, and they were the better team for most of the second half. David Coyne and Thomas O’Rourke won the midfield battle and the scores began to flow. Points from Thomas O’Rourke, Ryan Larkin, Darragh O’Rourke and Padraig Scott saw them ahead by 1-6 to 0-6 by the 43rd minute.
But Strokestown battled back in the final ten minutes. Points from Keelan Beirne and Diarmuid McGann levelled the scores at 0-10 to 1-7 by the 56th minute. Then Tulsk sub David McNamara fired over a 20-metre free in the 58th minute and that was to prove the winning score, Strokestown laid siege to the Tulsk goal in a desperate last-gasp effort to retrieve the situation. Shane McGinley was wide with a couple of long-range frees and other Strokestown attacks were cleared in the five minutes of time added on.
The final whistle brought scenes of celebration for the Tulsk players who had fought successfully to keep their senior status for another year while for their
neighbours Strokestown, they must face a tough task to preserve their senior status and the sweet memories of a superb Fahey Cup win in 2022 are now a distant memory.

Lenabane punters got off to a great start on Monday with the favourite winning the first three races. Stromberg took the Irish EBF Median Sires Series Race at 1/5 for Joseph O’Brien and Dylan Browne McMonagle. The featured INPBA Free Admission For All Today handicap was divided and Div 1 went to Rock Dandy at 100/30f, and Div 2 also went to the favourite, Barnhill Rose at 7/2, trained by Roscommon man Adrian Brendan Joyce. Punters nearly got it right in the fourth race as
the second favourite, trained by Johnny Murtagh and ridden by Ben Coen Hazalya, won at 100/30.
The Lecarrow Race over 1m 2f, a conditions race, saw some relief for the books as Cristal Clere won in the hands of Sean Bowen for John J Nallen, a man associated with the national hunt sector at 7/1.
The next handicap was won by Jabbar, trained by Darren Bunyan, and ridden by Dean Curran. Punters were back on the mark in the penultimate as 1/1 shot Deakin ran out an easy winner to complete a double for Joseph O’Brien and Dylan Browne McMonagle.
Bookies had the better of things in the last as Givemefive, a drifter from 4/1 morning price to 7/1, stayed on to beat Bright N Shine by ½l, another double on the day, for Johnny Murtagh and ridden by Ben Coen. Roscommon’s final meeting of the year takes place on September 25th.

Roscommon rower set for Paralympics!
Congratulations to Steven McGowan from Ballaghaderrreen, Co Roscommon, who along with his rowing partner Katie O’Brien from Clarinbridge, recently qualified for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. Steven and Katie won their heat in the Para Mixed Double Schull on Tuesday morning to book their place in Saturday’s World Rowing Championship final as well as their place at next year’s Paralympic Games. Originally from Co Donegal, Stevan has lived in Roscommon most of his life. In 2017, he was involved in a life-changing single-vehicle crash in Fairymount which left him with a severe spinal injury. Following a long period of rehabilitation, he took up rowing less than two years ago to join Katie in the pursuit of qualification for the 2014 Paralympics. They are both now based at the National Rowing Centre in Cork full-time.
Champions held by Kilbride
Champions Clann na nGael and last year’s beaten finalists Kilbride played out an exciting draw in the Abbey Hotel Ladies Senior Football Championship last weekend with the match finishing Clann 1-17 Kilbride 4-8.
The result means Kilbride remain three points ahead of Clann in the standings though they have played a game more.
In the other match, Shannon Gaels’ woes continued as they were well beaten by St Dominic’s, who maintained their 100 per cent start to the campaign.
In the Intermediate championship, St Ciaran’s were comfortable winners over St Barry’s while St Croan’s beat near neigh- bours Castlerea, and Éire Óg edged Western Gaels.
Meanwhile, congratulations to Pádraig Pearses U-16 Ladies who defeated St Dom-

Occasional sporting musings with Paul Healy
End of Vera era: Pauw fiasco looks like another FAI own goal
The termination of Vera Pauw’s reign as Irish manager was as predictable as night following day.
It has been fairly clear for some months that all was not well in the Team Ireland camp, this despite the historic feat of having qualified for the World Cup for the first time.
Pauw is no pushover – as no international manager should be – and that in itself was, you suspect, enough to have some self-important FAI chiefs eyeing her with wariness from the beginning of their relationship.
Persistent allegations (which she emphatically rejects) claiming Pauw mistreated players while working in America have no doubt been an unwelcome distraction for the FAI. That, one can understand.
However, judging by weekend media coverage, there appears to be two main reasons emerging for the remarkable decision not to offer a new contract to our most successful ever women’s football manager. One is the uneasy, perhaps even toxic, relationship that developed between Pauw and her employers. The other relates to the probability that some members of the playing squad were opposed to the manager – and had made their views known.
Whatever the precise reasons for this unseemly divorce, it’s certainly been an unpleasant saga, and one that’s worryingly reminiscent of past FAI fiascos. Of course the FAI was entitled to choose
to not offer Pauw a new contract, and they may feel they have made a totally justifiable call. However, it is also fair to say that this is something of a PR disaster. Pauw was our most successful ever manager. Surely if the relationship between Pauw and her players and employers had been handled better, the successful (on the pitch) alliance could have continued? Instead, rot was allowed to set in. Pauw is now alleging there was interference by non-coaching FAI staff. Hidden tensions began to reveal themselves in public. It was obvious over recent months that this marriage, outwardly successful, was in fact spiralling towards a messy break-up.
Maybe the FAI felt it could no longer work with Pauw, and/or that strained relations between the manager and some players meant a parting of the ways was required. It would be helpful, particularly as Pauw has now made a number of charges against the football governing body, if the FAI now provided some insight into the thinking behind their decision to part ways.
In the absence of some clarity, a very bad taste lingers. The FAI found a successful manager, she in turn led Ireland to a historic World Cup qualification. Then the FAI turned on her and showed her the door. Unless the FAI has some persuasive public commentary to make on this controversy, this goes down as another embarrassing own goal by a sporting governing body with a notoriously chequered history.
Ready to make the French connection…
As I have tweeted in the past –and I’m not alone in touching on this matter of grave importance – for many soccer fans, two of the least appealing words in the English language are ‘international break’.
For Premier League enthusiasts like this columnist, these breaks are dreaded…usually they mean boring international games (often just friendlies) tiresomely commanding the stage at the painful expense of live club action from England. At least the break underway now is to facilitate proper competitive action. The Republic of Ireland face the daunting prospect of taking on France (away) in a European Championship qualifier (this evening, Thursday 7th of September). Tuesday’s news that bang in-form Brighton star Evan Ferguson is out through injury is a cruel blow. We will watch it, with a mixture of trepidation and more trepidation. Best of luck to our lads.
Championship buzz!
Still, as one of the very excited presenters said on Off The Ball (Newstalk) on Sunday, we are entering a very exciting sporting period. The main item on the menu for the coming weeks is the Rugby World Cup. It kicks off tomorrow (Friday, September 8th) with a truly mouth-watering opener, hosts and tournament favourites France meeting second favourites and perennial ‘team to beat’ New Zealand at Stade de France. It could be sensational!
Ireland begin their campaign on Saturday when they face Romania. Notwithstanding that we are in a tough group, this is an incredibly exciting time for Irish rugby. Ireland are ranked number one in the world. If we can minimise injuries to key players, we can be a major force at this tournament. On our day, we can beat anyone and everyone. Of course trying to more or less peak game after game against such elite opposition (over a short period too) won’t be easy, but our lads will take some beating. Here’s wishing

There was a real buzz around the county on the GAA front last weekend, with a fascinating series of games moving the various championships closer to the silverware stage.
On the senior front, the weekend began with a great win (1-8 to 0-10) for Tulsk in their derby showdown with defending champs, Strokestown. It was a big night for Tulsk, but a sobering one for the champions of 2022, now faced with the relegation trap door.
Elsewhere, there were wins over the weekend for Padraig Pearses, St Brigid’s, Clann na nGael, Boyle and Roscommon Gaels. The county town club had a particularly dramatic win, a late penalty edging them past St Faithleach’s. See coverage in this week’s sports section.
Big date for Masters
Congratulations to the Roscommon management and evergreen playing panel who recently qualified for the All-Ireland Masters Plate Final.
The Roscommon veterans will face Mayo in the final this Saturday at Enfield (St Croan’s) with a throw-in time of 4 pm. Roscommon reaching the final after a couple of near-misses in recent years is a great tribute to all involved. We wish the Roscommon Masters every success this Saturday and urge supporters to go along and cheer them on in this national final.
