I read your recent legal column called Birth Injuries and Cerebral Palsy. My 25-year-old son has cerebral palsy and a severe intellectual disability. He relies on me as his mother for help with day-to-day activities. I worry that as I get older, I will struggle to care for him. My memories of his birth in the hospital are vivid. I believe that his birth was poorly managed and if he had been born in another hospital then his situation would be much different. I know he is 25 years old now and it might be too late to investigate a case for him but when I read your recent article, I thought you might be able to help me.

Thank you for your kind letter. As mentioned in my recent article, if it can be established that a mother’s pregnancy, labour and delivery was mismanaged by the delivery team and an injury to a baby’s brain could have been avoided, had competent medical treatment been given, then certainly questions will need to be answered.

Am I too late?

I note that your concerns about your son’s birth management remain after all this time. Under the Statute of Limitations, one normally has two years from the date of an incident/accident to bring a compensation claim for injuries. However, a mentally disabled person has a period of two years from the date on which they cease to be under the disability to bring a legal action. Therefore, and most importantly for you, a person such as your son who is permanently mentally disabled may now investigate a potential legal case in medical negligence.

Any such legal action may be brought on his behalf by you as his mother given that your son would not have capacity to bring legal proceedings in his own right by virtue of his intellectual disability.

What we liked…

Some joy, midst the gloom: Congratulations to our magnificent senior footballers.

Successive away wins (Armagh first, then against Cavan on Saturday) secured promotion to Division One of the National Football League, with the Division 2 title and trophy for good measure.

What we didn’t like… …the revelation that a defective hand sanitiser which had been distributed to schools has had to be recalled due to concerns about its possible negative effect on users’ health.

What PEOPLE are talking about Unfairness under Level 5…for example, shebeens prosper as pubs remain closed…and some shops use loopholes to justify remaining open (at expense of others); the US Presidential election; and, closer to when we went to press, heartbreaking tragedies in Cork and Dublin which claimed six lives.

There was some positive news on the Covid-19 front on Wednesday evening, as for the second day in a row, County Roscommon recorded fewer than five confirmed Covid-19 cases.

The county’s 14-day Covid incidence rate stands at 258.7 per 100,000 population while the national rate is 299.0.

As of midnight on Monday, the total number of cases in the county was at 732 while there were 167 cases in Roscommon in the fourteen days up to yesterday.

Nationally, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre was notified of 675 new cases of Covid-19 yesterday and, sadly, six new deaths. There have now been a total of 59,434 confirmed cases in Ireland and 1,896

Covid-related deaths. As of 2 pm yesterday, 328 Covid-19 patients were hospitalised with 41 in ICU. There were 19 additional hospitalisations in the previous 24 hours.

Speaking at yesterday’s briefing, the Chief Medical Officer,

Dr. Tony Holohan, reminded those displaying symptoms and those awaiting tests to selfisolate, to “stay informed on the public health advice around Covid-19 and be prepared to protect yourself and those around you”.

Castlerea Gardaí investigate attempted break-in Gardaí in Castlerea are seeking the public’s assistance following an attempted break-in to the Applegreen Service Station in Frenchpark.

The incident occurred between 12.30 am and 2.30 am last Friday (October 23rd).

It is believed that three males attempted to break into the premises through

a rear door, using an angle grinder.

However the men were disturbed and fled the scene.

Gardaí are appealing to members of the public who may have noticed anything suspicious in the area to come forward to help them with their enquiries. Contact Castlerea Garda Station on 094-9621630.

Gardaí appeal for information on burglary in Drum Roscommon Gardaí have appealed for information regarding a burglary in the Drum area of south Roscommon.

The break-in occurred at a house in the Meehanbee area between 12.30 pm and 9.40 pm on Sunday and a number of items of property were reported

stolen. Gardaí are appealing for anyone with any information or who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area on Sunday to contact Roscommon Garda Station on 090-6638300.

Man (33) dies in collision near Ballinasloe < DAN DOONER

A 33-year-old man was killed in a road traffic collision which occurred on the R357 between Shannonbridge and Ballinasloe in Co. Roscommon at around 6.55 pm on Tuesday evening. The collision involved a car and a truck and occurred one and a half kilometres from Shannonbridge village. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to University Hospital

Galway for postmortem. A man in his forties was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe with non-life threatening injuries. Forensic collision investigators carried out an examination of the scene and Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and also any road users who may have camera or dash-cam footage of the route around that time to come forward.

Roscommon Christmas Lights Committee update Donations invited!

The Roscommon Christmas Lights Committee will start erecting the lights this weekend. There will be some streets closed for a short period of time and diversions will be in place. This year, more than ever than ever, we need the town to shine brightly.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the committee will not be calling to businesses to collect much-needed funds to run the Christmas Lights, and we will not have our usual bucket or Church Gate collection. We have

secured funding through the Town and Village Renewal Scheme 2020, but we can’t draw down those funds until we have paid out the money.

If any business is in a position to support the Christmas Lights, a donation can be dropped off to either Liam Stephens of Klassic Cleaners on Church Street, Shane Fleming of SuperValu on Main Street, or Declan Molloy of Molloy’s Artisan Bakery in Abbeytown. Man who died in Strokestown collision laid to rest

The young man who lost his life in a road traffic collision in Strokestown last Thursday was laid to rest in Elphin on Monday morning.

33-year-old Dublin native, Daniel Sneyd, died after he was involved in a collision with a vehicle near Strokestown in the early hours of Thursday morning, October 22nd.

Daniel, a plasterer by trade, who had attended secondary school in Elphin, left behind a heartbroken wife, Paula, and two young sons: Killian (5) and Seán (2).

He is also mourned by his parents, Robert and Martina, brothers Andrew, Bobby and Kevin, Andrew’s partner Denise, Bobby’s partner Danielle, nephew Kaiden, motherin-law Dympna, brother-in-law Declan, and extended family.

Dismay at dumping at bottle and clothes banks

Cllr. Kathleen Shanagher has slammed a number of instances of dumping at bottle and clothes banks which took place last weekend at various locations in Roscommon town.

Non-recyclable items as well as cardboard boxes, shopping bags and other rubbish were discovered at the bottle banks in Tesco and clothes banks located in the Centrepoint Retail Park.

Cllr. Shanagher said the local Tidy Towns group and IBAL (Irish Businesses Against Litter) judging panels have repeatedly highlighted dumping in these areas in the past.

“People are leaving rubbish such as cardboard boxes and reusable shopping bags at the bottle banks in Tesco. There were also boxes filled with bottles just dumped there even though there was space for them to be recycled in the bottle bins.

“At the clothes banks in the Centrepoint Retail Park there were clothes and other materials as well as a number of non-recyclable items left behind.

“If the clothes banks are full then there are other banks available in Roscommon town. We would ask people not to leave bags at the bins but instead find a clothes bin with space or take items home with them.

“It’s unacceptable as well as unsightly and we are once again appealing to people to take any rubbish that doesn’t belong at these facilities home with them” she said.

Cllr. Shanagher has also called on members of the public to report any dumping at the sites.

“People can be reported for dumping at these sites and I would encourage members of the public to be vigilant in order to keep the areas safe and tidy,” she added.

reporting beat in Cavan. Stephen King was…king of Cavan football for a while then, Ronan Carolan a renowned freetaker. The team had a certain swagger, but I always felt they were haunted by high expectations, prisoners of the past…when Cavan were a major force at provincial and All-Ireland level. By the late 1980’s, not unlike Roscommon at the time, they were mired in a footballing famine.

I always enjoyed covering games in Cavan, where the thirst for a return to the glory days of the 1940’s and ‘50’s was passed from generation to generation. Cavan’s fans are amongst the most passionate in the country.

Today, Roscommon condemned Mickey Graham’s team to an unlucky descent into Division Three. They won’t be there too long. As for our lads, they were impressive again, especially when you consider that several key players were missing.

Roscommon’s two-point win sealed the Division 2 title, with Enda Smith collecting the trophy. Roscommon have momentum in a season draped in uncertainty. Maybe this is the one season when we’d have relished the Super 8s! Or maybe the straight knock-out structure in this Covid-hit year will suit counties like Roscommon. Either way, the team/panel is flying just now.

I watched the game on TG4 and enjoyed what I saw. Regaining Division One status is great, and will ensure this exciting team continues its progression. Good times ahead; that’s if the pandemic doesn’t prove to be the ultimate difficult opponent.

Today is Day One of a six-week series that nobody is a fan of. ‘Level 5’ is the reality show we didn’t sign up for. But, here we go.

In Roscommon Town today, there’s still lots of traffic and quite a bit of activity. This is not on a par with Lockdown 1, which is no consolation to those businesses that have been instructed to close.

Meanwhile, compliance with the maskwearing requirement (in shops, etc.) appears close to 100% status by now. In the shops, the odd person rudely (or maybe absentmindedly) encroaches into the next person’s space. We may have to develop a ‘stare of disapproval’ in order to remind these isolated ‘offenders’ that they are…out of step!

Thursday/Friday Yes, of course I stayed up to watch the US Presidential debate. Mind you, when the two old chaps were bickering over children in cages (“You locked them in cages” – “Yeah, but you MADE the cages!”) it almost felt wrong to be in the same space as them.

Still, it was a good bit more dignified than the first debate, the one in which Biden told Trump to shut up – and called him a clown – while the President bellowed his unique form of venom, interrupting like a rebellious boy in the classroom.

This was much better, and, at the risk of drawing the ire of the rest of the Irish media, I must say Trump was formidable. It doesn’t mean I approve of Trumpism, but I am willing to give credit where it’s due. For the most part, Trump was impressive in this debate.

Even the laughably biased CNN ‘experts’ initially gave Trump credit in their postdebate analysis, before sentencing him to metaphorical death by selective fact-checking/relentless partisan commentary!

Biden had his moments too, though he walked into traps on both America’s oil industry and the issue of fracking. Biden also made the classic error of looking at his watch (for a prolonged period). Biden looks old and frail. I am staggered that neither party can come up with younger candidates (but I digress).

Trump, unsurprisingly, lacked credibility when defending his administration’s handling of Covid-19. Had the pandemic not happened, Trump would almost certainly

be unbeatable next week (economy was flying, Democrats were in disarray). But Covid-19 has undone much of the economic progress that was being made. It’s Trump’s poor handling of the pandemic that has put Biden in the driving seat.

With five days to go to the election, Biden is favourite, but Trump could still win. Watch out for Trump’s ‘hidden voters’ – those who would never admit to pollsters that they’d vote for him – making this a real contest. Biden ought to win, but Trump cannot be written off. If he loses narrowly, expect lawyers to rub their hands in glee and a monumental legal saga to begin!

Friday night More ‘Misery TV’ from the Late Late Show, where ‘the team’ are obviously convinced viewers want ‘Covid Extra’ after a long week of blanket pandemic coverage on TV, radio, social media and in the papers.

Week after week, the Late Late combines celebrity interviews and music with stories of human tragedy – and relentless Covid coverage.

Surely by Friday night, a beleaguered public, if they are watching TV, want some release from the pandemic?

Tonight, it’s the turn of Dr. Tony Holahan, Chief Medical Officer. I switched channels. Nothing to do with Dr. Tony; he’s doing a great job and has been heroic. I’d watch an interview with him on Prime Time or any current affairs programme.

As for that Friday (night) feeling, we’ve no chance if we’re at the mercy of the Late Late Show planners. If they can’t abandon their misery mantra, maybe it’s time to replace the Late Late with a laugh-out-loud comedy movie – and give the nation something to smile about.

Every night It’s so sad to see the doors closed again… stark symbols of this wretched shocker of a year. A number of shops and other outlets remain open under Level 5, but the abrupt (latest) closure of hotels, restaurants, pubs and cafes (other than for takeaway/delivery service) is hurting the economy, impacting on the wellbeing of many people…and stripping our lives of much of the normal social interaction that we thrive on.

It’s demoralising to drive through Roscommon’s Main Street at night…the town eerily quiet, save for a steady flow of people out walking. The atmosphere has been stolen. I’m sure many residents don’t miss the occasionally messy late-night revelry of pre-pandemic Saturday nights.

Still, it’s not normal to see restaurants and bars in darkness…with all the implications for employment, social interaction, mental health even.

These times will pass, and the sooner the better.

Nightingale Nursing Home Ahascragh, Ballinasloe.

Adequate staffing now in place at nursing home

Ballygar GP, Dr. Martin Daly, who last week highlighted a serious Covid-19 outbreak at the Nightingale Nursing Home in Ahascragh, Ballinasloe, in which 26 out of 28 residents tested positive for the virus, says that adequate staffing is now in place and the HSE is continuing to support the facility this week.

Dr. Daly took to Twitter last Thursday in order to bring the Health Service Executive’s attention to the plight of residents and staff who were badly affected by the outbreak.

One resident sadly died on Wednesday of last week after contracting the virus, while three residents were admitted to hospital. Two residents remain in hospital, one of whom is seriously ill, while three more continue to suffer serious symptoms at the nursing home. All but two staff members tested

positive for the virus.

Dr. Daly said that while the situation remains serious, staffing levels have been bolstered in recent days.

“In fairness, the action taken by the HSE last Thursday in providing volunteers from their own staff relieved the situation greatly and that support has continued into this week.

“Volunteer nurses from the community and from places far from Ahascragh have also helped to staff the nursing home over the weekend.

“The senior full-time nurse (at the Nightingale Nursing Home) has also been supplemented by a HSE nurse and a senior HSE manager to ensure that good and adequate care continues to be provided,” he said.

The Ballygar GP said while the situation has stabilised somewhat, residents were still dealing with the effects of the outbreak.

“We have to remember that at least one resident has passed away and two remain in hospital, one seriously ill. There are also three residents who remain ill at the nursing home and the remaining residents have mild to moderate symptoms.

“What has improved is that there is now adequate staff to provide good care to residents still coping with the effects (of this Covid-19 outbreak)”.

Politicians critical of HSE Local public representatives have criticised the HSE following its response to the recent Covid-19 outbreak at the Nightingale Nursing Home in Ahascragh, Ballinasloe.

It emerged last week that the HSE had carried out tests on all staff and residents last Monday

(19th) after being informed that one resident, who had been admitted to hospital the previous weekend, had tested positive for the virus.

Test results on Tuesday confirmed that 25 of 27 residents as well as 17 staff had contracted the disease, meaning just the clinical nurse manager and one care assistant could continue with their duties.

Sadly, one of the residents has since passed away while two others were admitted to hospital, with one still in a serious condition.

Director of Nursing, Patricia MacGabhann, who was forced to self-isolate after testing positive, made an emotional appeal for help from the HSE on RTÉ’s Liveline programme last Thursday.

Independent TD Denis Naughten said staff should have been provided from the ‘Be On Call For Ireland’ initiative.

“The HSE needs to establish an immediate panel that can go into nursing homes where substantial numbers of staff have tested positive for Covid-19,” he said.

Fellow Independent Michael Fitzmaurice raised the issue during Leader’s Questions last Thursday.

“When this pandemic arose, promises were made that everything would be done to protect our elderly and most vulnerable.

And yet, here we are.

“The HSE has failed the residents and staff of this nursing home, despite requests for urgent assistance,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane was scathing in her assessment of the response last week.

“Such staff shortages are completely inexcusable and potentially dangerous. It is shocking that the HSE has been unable to source more staff.

Businessman raised sanitiser concerns with Foley in August < DAN DOONER

The head of a Kiltoom-based disinfectant supply company raised his serious concerns over alcohol-based hand sanitisers, which have been widely used in schools, in a letter to Minister for Education, Norma Foley, back in August.

Last Friday it emerged that ViraPro Hand Sanitiser, which was being used in schools nationwide, had been recalled on account of possible adverse health reactions such as dermatitis, eye irritation and upper respiratory irritation.

Ciaran Mannion of EC Disinfection, which is based in Corramore, Kiltoom, told the Roscommon People that he wanted to encourage the use of non-alcohol-based sanitisers in school settings.

He said: “I had contacted people in relation to this issue before but I decided to just sit down a write a letter to the Minister’s office to highlight it as a major concern.

“The emergency guidance from

WHO (World Health Organisation) has led to many poor products and misinformation.

“Everyone seemed to have it in their heads that these products had to be alcohol-based, but that’s not the case”.

Mr. Mannion says he imports a nonalcohol-based product from the UK, which has proven just as effective in combatting coronavirus.

“I have supplied this product to some nursing homes free of charge and offered it to the HSE in Tullamore back in March but they turned it down because they were seeking alcoholbased products,” he said.

Mr. Mannion provided this newspaper with a copy of the letter he had sent to Minister Foley on August 24th of this year.

In the letter he raised concerns about hand sanitiser supply details, claiming that many of the products listed “state to keep out of reach of children” and can affect those with respiratory issues.

He added that “non-alcohol-based products have long contact times

against enveloped viruses” and that this was not ideal in an education setting. “…Enterprise Ireland and others have rushed other products to market with little attention to efficacy and safety issues for children. Pupils and staff lives are at risk.

“I have two sons who will be working hospital emergency rooms this winter, a daughter teaching P.E. to 700 boys and a son doing Leaving Certificate. I have selfish reasons too for being passionate about this,” he wrote.

Mr. Mannion added that there were “many excellent solutions” for schools that were currently outside the Department of Agriculture’s biocides list. He called on Minister Foley to obtain efficacy tests from independent labs and to make the results available to schools.

He has also called on institutions such as Beaumont Hospital to share their effective protocols for wider use.

The Kiltoom man confirmed that he had received an acknowledgement

from the Minister’s office in late September, which stated that his concerns had been noted. He acknowledged the pressures faced by the Minister but questioned why he hadn’t been contacted by her office sooner.

“Our older citizens cannot be abandoned in this pandemic and they are entitled to safe care and adequate support as an absolute minimum. The state has a duty to protect everyone in care homes and must prioritise their safety,” she said.

Ballinasloe Fine Gael Cllr. Aisling Dolan has since called for “fast streamlined recruitment and transfer measures” between the HSE and private nursing homes and “a system for urgent transfer of staff when critical situations are identified”.

For its part, the HSE has said that an outbreak control team met for the first time last Tuesday (October 20th) and was in daily contact with the nursing home.

It added that a HSE Covid-19 Response Team Director of Nursing was on site last week and that while staffing was secured at the nursing home, challenges remained.

‘Santa Underground’ cancelled at Arigna Mining Experience < DAN DOONER

The annual ‘Santa Underground’ Christmas event at the Arigna Mining Experience has been cancelled this year due to the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions, it has been confirmed.

In a Facebook post yesterday (Wednesday) the Arigna Mining Experience said that management and staff had taken the decision after carefully considering all options.

The post read: “Due to the current Government Covid-19 safety guidelines, the museum will remain closed until at least the 1st of December and therefore, unfortunately we will not be running our ‘Santa Underground’ Christmas event this year.

“Our first priority during this time is the health and well-being of our visitors and staff. We appreciate that many of you were planning to come back to us this year and we regret any disappointment caused to you at all, however we look forward to welcoming you all back in 2021 and in the meantime we hope you and your families stay safe”.

BACK AGAIN FOR A THIRD TIME… POULTRY FACTORY APPLICATION! After being refused twice, they’re back again…

Recently, a THIRD planning application was published in small print in a local paper…

1: Why the small print? What is the applicant afraid of? There is also a change of name for the applicant. It has now been submitted by a man called Eugene Courtney. Locals will not be taken for fools!

2: The address is The Old Bog Road, Kilmore (Corgullion). Yes, you read that correctly! The Old Bog Road is a beautiful, historic road. This poultry factory would be located approximately 0.25 miles from Cox’s Cross on the Old Bog Road to Drumsna, and about 0.5 miles from Albert Lock.

3: The Old Bog road is such a beautiful walk. On a summer’s evening I often see tourists, many home from the States, visiting relatives, as well as those just

off numerous boats at the beautiful Burke’s marina, the hidden gem of docking on this particular part of the Shannon just before you enter the canal.

You couldn’t dock at a nicer place and boating tourists love to get off and go walking or cycling. I don’t think they would be very excited to see this factory!

4: The road is already extremely narrow for cars to pass each other on, never mind trucks. How could a tractor meet a truck coming from the factory? It would, in our view, be an accident waiting to happen. It would be a safety worry if, for example, children were cycling in the vicinity of the factory.

5: The area is a sanctuary for wildlife: pheasants, wild duck in bog drains, thrush, blackbirds, wrens, woodcock, cranes, the odd curlew, and also hares, rabbits, badgers and frogs. Instead, in our opinion, you could have rats and mice, flies, blue bottles and a lot more in the future. We believe it would become a road nobody would want to live on or walk on, that the peace and tranquillity would also be lost forever.

6: Poultry factories use a lot of water. In the case of this proposed factory, the used water would be drained into the bog. Finally…we are presently going through a very serious sanitary crisis (Covid) with no end in sight. We must continue to protect the environment.

Wanted: Christmas memories!

€45,000 raised for Mayo/ Roscommon Hospice Shannonside Northern Sound recently launched a ‘Let’s Do it for Hospice Appeal’, with the aim being to raise and distribute vital funds evenly for four local hospice groups (Mayo/Roscommon Hospice, County Longford Hospice Homecare, St. Christopher’s Hospice (Cavan and Monaghan), and North West Hospice (Leitrim).

Mr. Tim O’Keeffe (CEO) announced that the Board of Shannonside Northern Sound was donating €10,000 to the fund to launch the event.

On the 11th of September, the closing date for receipt of donations, ‘Let’s Do it for Hospice’ had reached the incredible figure of €180,000.

We are so proud to have provided a trustworthy platform that enabled people in the region to donate safely and easily towards those four worthy local hospice groups”.

Each of the four local hospice groups received a cheque to the value of €45,000. The money raised will make a huge difference to the people who need it most, and will help each of the hospices to continue providing greatly needed services in our region.

Small Circles releases new single ‘Low’ Roscommon artist Small Circles AKA Conor Harkin and his partner, Killala singer Stacey Gilroy AKA Flora Maye will today (Thursday, October 29th) release a collaboration called ‘Low’.

The track was written and recorded in a small room in Killala, Co. Mayo, and is a departure from Small Circle’s normal work, incorporating the beautiful vocals of Flora Maye and vibrant topline melody on violin.

‘Low’ has been mixed by Sean Corcoran at Bikini Island Studios, Dublin, and mastered by Peter Montgomery. It is a very unique blend of instrumentation and beats, and displays another interesting direction traditional Irish music can be taken.

Taking inspiration from Bonobo, Bicep and George Fitzgerald, the duo

can’t help but also draw comparisons to Daithí’s fusion of electronic music and violin who is also modernising traditional Irish music.

Flora Maye’s vocals are said to “lend a sense of the mythical and folklore ambience” to the track, which blends traditional instruments with modern beats.

To date, Small Circles has performed in McGowan’s Bar, Easkey; JJ Harlow’s, Roscommon; and Crowbar Dublin, and hopes to return to the stage as soon as possible.

Currently Small Circles is working on his debut album with the hopes of completing it before the end of 2020.

Fregoli Theatre Company are looking for you to get involved in their latest project, ‘Home for Christmas’, as part of their residency at Roscommon Arts Centre.

With the festive season looming, and still so much uncertainty out there about what Christmas 2020 will actually look like, Fregoli want to capture people’s memories and the family traditions of what being home at Christmas time means to them, for a new virtual project which will be released in time for the festive season.

Speaking about the project, Fregoli said: “Christmas offers delicious nostalgia. We remember how it used to be when we were young. We carry on traditions, placing candles in windows and donkeys in mangers.

We look forward to seeing our loved ones, that Christmassy buzz in our villages and towns and inhaling all the chocolate in the land. And yet, we are acutely aware that Christmas can leave many of us feeling cold.

The season can be difficult, or even painful, and no amount of tinsel or fairy lights can ever distract from an empty chair beside us. “‘Home for Christmas’ aims to explore memories of Christmas, and the important role that being at home plays during this special time of year. To be part of this unique event, we are asking you to share your stories of Christmas, remembered or imagined, by writing them down or drawing something, and submitting it online to Fregoli or dropping it into us at the arts centre”.

The company, though Galwaybased, has a strong Roscommon connection. Their artistic director Maria Tivnan and writer/performer Jarlath Tivnan, are both from Boyle, and their rural upbringing and Roscommon itself has had a very significant impact on the company’s theatre-making.

“Home can mean so many different things – what surrounds us, our thoughts, memories, who or what we feel connected to,” says Maria Tivnan.

“It is a topic that we as a company have been fascinated with for quite some time – how home can feel, look like or be experienced, both internally and externally. The residency at Roscommon Arts Centre gave Fregoli a home, which was disrupted and changed by the pandemic. Ideas around home have now changed for many people, and it is perhaps more vital than ever to explore this”.

TV personality Baz Ashmawy presents the Irish version of DIY SOS: The Big Build Ireland. The hit TV show sees the Irish presenter and his team of experts give deserving families a home makeover – in the space of nine days.

Shay and Finn Guihen are 8-year-old identical twin boys, born with Pfeiffer Syndrome Type III: a rare genetic disorder causing a number of very challenging and life-limiting disabilities. The boys live at home with their loving parents Denise and Dermot and little brother Riley (6) and require around the clock care for their complex needs.

The home is no longer suited to the family’s needs and this is where the DIY SOS show comes in.

Sean Doyle & Sons assisted with the new extension to the existing house in County Kildare by providing grey aluminium double glazed windows and the company was delighted to be involved in the show, as Jonathan Doyle explained.

“DIY SOS is a really feel-good and inspiring show which brings out the best in people so it was great to be involved in helping this County Kildare family out by providing the aluminium windows for the new extension which will hopefully help to make life easier for them,” Jonathan said.

Last weekend I found myself looking at Paul O’Grady as he travelled around South Africa trying to help injured or orphaned animals get homes.

For nine seasons, O’Grady has been visiting Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, helping to re-home animals that have found themselves homeless (and often in great distress). It is one of the best-loved documentary series’ on

Great sport on TV

For someone who is a sport fanatic (me) the biggest and best difference with this lockdown is the fact that elite and professional sport has been allowed to continue, and we now have greater telly coverage than ever before.

Last weekend, there was GAA (both football and hurling) international and PRO 14 rugby, horse racing, motor racing, soccer and loads more to keep even the most committed sports fan happy.

This weekend will be even more exciting. Now I’m sure there are people out there that are not over the moon with all this sport, but even they will admit it’s better to live with someone who is excited about what’s coming down the line in sporting terms, than with a long-faced grouch who is constantly grumbling about the lockdown!

A friend told me this morning that as he can’t spend any money in the pub at the moment, he has just got in BT Sport, Sky Sports, Eir Sports and any other sports channels he can find. He said it helps keep him sane. With mental health so important during these times, I fully understand, so is it time for the Government to give us all these channels for free? I am only joking – but sport is definitely a release for an awful lot of us.

TV, and has had several nominations for top awards – winning the National TV Award for Most Popular Serial Drama in 2018.

What makes all of this newsworthy is that O’Grady (whose father Paddy was born down the road in Ballincurry, Glinsk, and who still has close relations living there) made his name in the 1990s, when as a drag artist his character Lily Savage was a huge hit on national television.

As Lily, Paul replaced Paula Yates as presenter of The Big Breakfast in 1994. In later years he successfully hosted Blankety Blank, following in the very large footsteps of Terry Wogan and Les Dawson. By now

he was in huge demand and earning serious money, buying a house in Kent for £650,000, where he had a bit of land on which to keep various animals.

However, his new-found fame and resulting wealth did not sit well with the star. For a time he suffered from clinical depression. He recovered to do the Royal Variety Show with Cilla Black and Barbara Windsor, a programme with an audience of more than twelve million people. By now he had grown tired of his Lily character and was intent on being a serious actor and presenter.

In 2002, Paul suffered a heart attack.

He missed the Heritage Foundation

Awards ceremony, at which he was to have been awarded the TV Personality of the Year Award. In the intervening years, he had his own Paul O’Grady Show on ITV, until in 2006 he had a second massive heart attack (major surgery was required).

In 2012, ‘For the love of Dogs’ first aired. It is now in its ninth series, still hugely popular and showing no sign of ending.

And so, in a notoriously difficult profession, hats off to the ‘Glinsk man’ who changed his career path entirely and ended up being a success for a second time. It’s hard enough do it once – fair play to him for managing it twice.

Local input on emotional RTE programme On Sunday evening I saw a programme on RTÉ – DIY SOS – where a number of volunteers finished off a house that had been started by a man called Michael Barry in Dundrum, Co. Tipperary. Tragically, Michael passed away before he got a chance to finish it, leaving behind a wife (Sinead), three young children,

Construction workers from all over the country provided their work and craftsmanship for free, and in nine days they turned the shell into a most beautiful home. It was a very emotional programme – hugely uplifting – and a credit to all

who gave up their time to bring the whole project to a wonderful conclusion.

If I’m not mistaken, Glinsk was represented there as well, as I’m sure I spotted Stephen Brennan, a recent Creggs GAA team manager, among the volunteers.

Well done Stephen, and fair play to you and all the other workers.

Musings on these changing times More musings on Creggs Harvest Festival: In sport (and in life?) they say discipline and structure are important. For the last few years (when the festival’s been on) I have gone out on Saturday nights, but no matter what the attractions might be I have religiously stayed in on Sunday night (discipline) in order to be fit and well for the Bank Holiday Monday – the day when the fair, pudding competition, craft fair, and loads more takes place, culminating in music sessions in the pubs when (as the song says) the craic is ninety.

On the Monday morning, I would hit for Creggs at around 10 am (structure) and by then the street would be full.

The stalls (selling everything from tools to clothes, shoes, toys, CDs, DVDs, pictures, mirrors and furniture) would already be set up. John Whyte, Eddie Gavin and Brendan Noone

(among others) would be there with their horses, asses, mules and ponies, and even at that hour the atmosphere would be electric.

This morning, nearly out of habit, I headed to the village. I drove up through the almost-deserted street, put on my mask and went into Mikeen’s to get the paper. I spoke to Sarah, who was working there, said hello to some other lad that I didn’t know because of the mask, and for the first time after seven months (I admit I might be a bit slow), I began to really reflect on the awful consequences of this pandemic.

I think we have all put on our bravest face and put up with things that we normally would never have to. However, I am beginning to sense that people are getting more restless, and are less inclined to go along with all the new regulations.

On Friday, the second day of the new lockdown, I was in Roscommon town, and the difference between the first lockdown in March and the new one was stark. In March, the town was almost totally deserted. On Friday, it was buzzing.

There were people everywhere, and in one way it’s hard to blame them. At the same time though, if most of us are doing our best to obey the guidelines, it is very hard to accept that you can have a shebeen in Co. Kildare (complete with a full-sized pool table) being frequented by customers, while the local pub – fully licensed, insured, and regulationcompliant – has to stay closed.

With rural pubs closed, you would hope that the proprietors of such an unlicensed den would be made to pay dearly for their cheek.

Initially, people said that we were all

in this together. Seven months later, with the virus getting more and more prevalent, are people beginning to question whether or not we will ever see the back of it? And if not, what’s the point of all these recurring lockdowns?

Anyway, on this Bank Holiday Monday the virus has won – our festival isn’t on. I find myself all alone sitting at the kitchen table, sad and depressed (not really) and looking forward to this time next year.

In the meantime, I think it is only right and proper to do what we are supposed to do – behave responsibly. Please God on December 1st we will be released from this captivity and I will once more sit on a high stool in Joe Dolan’s or Mikeen’s. (Lads – please make sure the Guinness taps are kept in perfect working order!).

Finally for this week, I was saddened to hear of the recent death of Tulsk’s Paddy Moffitt, a man I was privileged to know for the best part of forty years. He was undoubtedly one of the area’s last great characters.

Paddy was one of those men about whom countless stories were told; some were made up, some exaggerated, some true, but all were very entertaining. There can be little doubt that the world he leaves behind will be a good deal duller for his passing.

I first got to know him way back in 1979, and while I didn’t meet Paddy that often, every time I did I came away feeling the world wasn’t such a bad place at all. He had a positive outlook on everything and had that same effect on people.

To his family I express my deepest sympathies; we won’t see his likes again. May he rest in peace.

Halloween is this weekend – and the advice is that we should avoid Trick or Treating this year. So, Aughrim Kilmore Development Association is going to hold not one, but three competitions so that Halloween is not completely cancelled in the parish.

The first competition, for €100, is for Best Decorated House for Halloween (inside or out). The second competition, for €50 (kindly donated by Clare Connellan), is for best Kids’ Halloween

In memory of Ballymoe man executed in India Mass is this Monday < DAN DOONER

A Mass will take place in Ballymoe Church next Monday (November 2nd) at 7 pm to mark the 100th anniversary of the execution of Private James Daly, a native of Ballymoe, who took part in a mutiny of Connaught Rangers based in India in 1920 to protest against the Black and Tans’ activities in Ireland.

There are also plans by Dr. Conor McNamara, a leading authority on the subject and on 1916 history, to compile a booklet in Daly’s memory while Galway County

Council are expected to produce an online video commemorating the Ballymoe man.

The son of James Daly, a baker, and Kathleen Creane, Daly was born in Ballymoe, Co. Galway on Christmas Eve 1899. The family later moved to Tyrellspass, Co. Westmeath before Daly joined the Connaught Rangers in 1919 and was posted to India.

The mutiny of 1920 started in June of that year at Wellington Barracks, Punjab, where Daly’s brother, William, was involved. The revolt then spread to other Connaught Rangers’ companies at Jutogh and Solan, where, led by WW1 veteran, Joseph Hawes from Kilrush, Co. Clare, James Daly and over a hundred other men laid down their arms and refused to return to duty in protest over the activities of the British Armed Forces in Ireland.

The mutiny was quashed and 19 men were sentenced to death while 59 were sentenced to life imprisonment. Ten men were acquitted and all other sentences were commuted, except for Daly’s, as he was considered a ringleader.

Private James Daly was executed by firing squad on November 2nd, 1920, making him the last member of the British Forces to be executed for mutiny. His body was sent back to Ireland in 1970 on the 50th anniversary of his death and he was laid to rest in Tyrellspass, Co. Westmeath.

Joseph Hawes was present at the commemoration and Daly is remembered in the traditional Irish song ‘Lay Him Away on the Hillside’.

Monday’s Mass in Ballymoe to commemorate James Daly’s 100th anniversary will be broadcast on 106.5FM from 7 pm.

Costume, and the third competition, for €25, is for best costume from one of our teachers in our three national schools.

Miriam’s MUSINGS Let’s break the silence around postnatal depression Words of wit and wisdom with MIRIAM KERINS

The most amazing thing has just happened…following a long and tiring labour, you performed a superhuman task by giving birth to the most precious little being the world has ever known.

Your face is still puffy, your eyes are still bloodshot and your cheeks are still scattered with tiny burst blood vessels – but you don’t care. You’re crying tears of unbridled joy because this is the moment you’ve been waiting for your entire life.

Then suddenly, out of nowhere, your hormone levels plummet to such a level that you, barely holding it together, suddenly feel the initial elation nosedive. But do you complain? Nope! Instead you soldier on – I mean, nobody properly addressed this issue during those fun, fluffy antenatal classes, now did they? Yeah, the ‘baby blues’ were mentioned, but the seriousness of postnatal depression was skimmed over in a cross-thatbridge-if-we-come-to-it approach.

However, as you try to establish a feeding routine, develop a sleep pattern, work through the sore boobs (if you’re breastfeeding), and suffer from a very sore and angry undercarriage if you’ve had an episiotomy, you suddenly begin to realise the serious mental health implications of becoming a mother! Yes ladies, is it any wonder I only gave birth twice, leaving eleven years in between?

My reason for addressing this subject is down to the heart-searing tragedy that occurred last week when a young mother in Dublin allegedly took her own life. The body of her infant son was subsequently discovered in an upstairs room of the house that she shared with her partner.

According to reports, Gardaí are treating this distressing incident as a ‘family tragedy’. My thoughts are with everyone who knew and loved this young mother and her child.

It has been reported that this beautiful lady originally came from our neighbouring County Mayo, and had

been ‘suffering from postnatal depression in recent months’. I am so, so sorry for her family’s loss.

While we don’t know for certain the reasons behind this tragedy, the effects of childbirth on a woman’s physical, psychological and social health can be so great, so overwhelming, that the very act itself can create an environment for a perfect storm of complex emotions. The consequences of this sudden transition can cause many of us to feel vulnerable and powerless.

Overnight, our feelings can suddenly manifest from ones of elation into a

growing emptiness, a sadness so palpable and so heavy that it engulfs us, making us feel as though we might, quite literally, solidify. Then, without warning, the despair and the desolation that fiendishly hovered, takes root, consuming our entire world from the inside out. Sound familiar?

It’s time we broke the silence around the debilitating effects of post-natal depression. It’s time we acknowledged and recognised that this is a serious condition that affects approximately eighteen thousand mothers a year in this country. There are women who are clearly struggling when

Why I’m sick of the anti-maskers!

We all have a right to be heard and we all have a right to protest in a peaceful manner. Okay, we’ve got that out of the way!

However, last week’s gathering by the so-called ‘Yellow Vest Ireland’ protestors in Dublin’s city centre was not only selfish, it was downright dangerous!

These halfwit yellow-vesters, who were joined by the anti-vaxers, anti-maskers, anti-immigrationers, and the I-can’t-believeit’s not-butter-ers (okay maybe I made that last one up), are placing every single one of us at risk.

As this pandemic claims lives, I believe anyone who plans and attends these large-scale events in order to protest against health and safety directives, amid a backdrop of what is the largest and most complex crisis this nation has ever endured, should not only be fined – they should also be prosecuted!

Fair play to An Garda Síochána who did their best to peacefully disperse the crowds. From what I saw on social media, those on duty were quite clearly forced to intervene. Look folks, like everyone, I believe each and every one of us should be guaranteed the right to life, liberty, freedom, dignity and self-expression, etc., etc., etc. However, with those rights comes responsibility, and by refusing to socially distance themselves and not wear a mask, these people are not only placing us all at risk, they’re denying us our right to live a healthy life. How hypocritical is that?

Therefore, next time you ignorant anti-maskers want to throw a tantrum, throw it in your own backyard – because freedom, without the guarantee of health and safety for your fellow human being, is no freedom at all.

Let me tell you ladies: there is no such thing as the perfect mother –she simply doesn’t exist. If you’re reading this and feeling that everything is beyond your grasp, that life has become an insurmountable task – please, please reach out. Please try as hard as you can (and I know how difficult this is) to walk that path back to wellness by speaking to someone, anyone, be that your partner, mother, friend, doctor, the woman in the supermarket, whomever. You will be listened to, and you will not be judged.

There’s no shame in experiencing postnatal depression. You will not be left on your own to traverse what may seem like the long, winding road back to your former self – I promise you.

Help, understanding, and a complete recovery are within your grasp.

Can I ask readers to be on the lookout for what I call ‘trigger’ words that new mothers may use: tiredness, not sleeping, weepy, and colicky baby, etc. These words may be whispered in passing rather than being shouted, but don’t ignore them. Please dig deeper as there may be an underlying cry for help.

Yes, George Lee’s prophet-of-doomface reports terrify me!

It has been a long time since we’ve had any ‘positive’ Covid news. In fact, so good was the media’s we-could-have-a-vaccine-beforeChristmas announcement, I could almost see George Lee (RTE’s Grim Reaper – sorry Environment and Science Correspondent) visibly sink before my eyes. I mean, the imminent arrival of a vaccine to combat Covid must surely have come as a real buzzkill for a man who seems to be at his very best when delivering devastating news to the nation.

Don’t get me wrong – I’ve got great respect for Mr. Lee as a journalist. His credentials are impeccable and I’m sure he’s a lovely man.

However, when George dons his prophet-ofdoom-face to lecture us – sorry – deliver his report ‘end-of-the-world’ style, I can’t help but feel a sense of foreboding for the future of the entire human race. Now, is that just me, or does anyone else feel like this?

Fianna Fáil (Galway) councillor Michael Connolly has welcomed funding which has been secured from TII by Galway County Council, to carry out improvements and corrections to traffic calming measures on the N63, Ballygar, at John Fallon’s pub and at the junction with Colaiste Mhuire on the Creggs road.

Cllr. Connolly hopes this will help bring about a solution to the long-running difficulties caused at this location on the east side of the town.

He said: “Now is a good time to carry out this work and get the different issues addressed which have been causing problems since the initial measures were put in place in 2019.

“Hopefully this will be of benefit to local businesses in the area, the local secondary school and all road users”.

McDermott welcomes local drainage works

Marty McDermott, left, has welcomed the completion of works on the L7100 between Portrunny and Kilteevan.

He said: “I am delighted to see resurfacing and drainage works completed on the L7100 Doogary More, Clooncah, and Cloonmore road between Portrunny and Kilteevan.

“This is a fantastic amenity for walking and these works are greatly welcomed. I would like to thank Roscommon County Council staff for a great job completed”.

Cllr. McDermott said he was also pleased that drainage works would begin at The Walk in Roscommon town as soon as next week.

“Drainage works will commence at The Walk next week and these works are important to alleviate flooding in the area. These works will be followed by resurfacing works in the coming weeks.

“I am delighted to be able to reassure those living in the area that these works will now begin as this is an issue that has been brought to my attention on a number of occasions,” he said.

West Roscommon left with part-time ambulance service – Kerrane

Sinn Féin TD for Roscommon/Galway, Claire Kerrane, has said that the West Roscommon ambulance base at Loughglynn is understaffed and under-resourced, leaving a “part-time ambulance service”.

Deputy Kerrane said: “The Loughglynn ambulance base closes Monday to Friday at 6 pm, leaving no evening or night-time service for the area. It also opens only two nights per week at the weekend, leaving the day-time of Saturday and Sunday without a service.

“The people of Roscommon were sold a pup when promised a rapid response ambulance service following the closure of the A&E at Roscommon Hospital in 2011. What we have been left with is a part-

time ambulance service for the people. This is not good enough. The ambulance crew in Loughglynn of just four people run the entire operation, without the additional staff needed. They deal with up to five calls per day and respond to calls across four counties – Roscommon, Galway, Mayo and Sligo. This is due to the fact that they have to travel long distances to get to an A&E and are typically the nearest ambulance when they are travelling back to base”.

Deputy Kerrane has contacted the Director of the National Ambulance Service to seek an online meeting in relation to the Loughglynn ambulance base which she says should be a 24/7 service, with an additional two staff and two release staff.

New website for BallymurrayKnockcroghery project Roscommon County Council has announced the launch of a new website which is specific to the N61 Ballymurray to Knockcroghery Road Project.

The local authority says that the website – www.n61roscommon.ie – will be used as a platform to share information in relation to the project, from the latest news, to upcoming public consultations, as well as having links to

previously published documentation for the project.

Environmental studies have been undertaken as part of the project which is still ongoing. The selection of the preferred route is being finalised in advance of the Public Consultation 3 phase which Director Services, Shane Tiernan, recently confirmed would take place in Q4 (November/December) of this year.

GoFundMe page set up for St Joseph’s’ project St. Joseph’s GAA Club has initiated a GoFundMe page to finance much-needed refurbishment work at the club.

The Kilteevan-based club plays an active role in facilitating the social, economic and cultural development of their community by participating in projects such as the GAA Social Initiative.

In a statement, the club said: “In order to develop our facilities to make them fit for purpose, we applied for and received a small grant from the Community Enhancement Programme 2020. Unfortunately, this will not cover the (full) cost of the planned works, as the dressing rooms and other areas of the pitch have gone without any real refurbishment since 1993.

“We need to upgrade facilities such as the showers and toilets, rewire the clubhouse, obtain new PVC facia and soffit including

new timber gable rafters, replace windows and doors, paint the building, etc. These are essential repairs and upgrades for the future development of the club”.

Club members have worked very hard over the last few weeks on a voluntary basis to ensure that costs are kept to a minimum.

The coming weeks will see preliminary ground investigation works taking place to determine extent and depth of soft ground likely to be encountered during excavation for the various route options.

Roscommon County Council has confirmed that works are being carried out in accordance with the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) Covid-19 protocols.

Speed ramps to be trialled in Lisnamult < DAN DOONER

Speed ramps will be introduced on a trial basis in Lisnamult in coming weeks after residents raised serious concerns about increasing incidents of speeding in the housing estate.

Cllr. Kathleen Shanagher welcomed the move earlier this week.

“The ramps will be installed on a trial basis in order to curb speeding in the area by both residents and those who use the area.

“There has been an increase in traffic in Lisnamult in recent years with the schools and crèches, Roscommon Gaels GAA Club and the Community Sports Park. Cllr. Orla Leyden and I met with local residents last year and they raised serious concerns about speeding in the area.

“The junction which leads to the GAA club and the Community Sports Park has since been lined and now these speeding ramps are expected to be installed in coming weeks,” she said.

Fianna Fáil Cllr. Marty McDermott said that he hoped the introduction of ramps would make the area safer for those living in the estate.

“My colleagues and I warmly welcome the installation of these speed ramps for the safety of residents in the area. It was an issue of huge concern to the residents and I’m happy to see it is being addressed,” he said.

The late Martin Mullin, Ballintubber, Castlerea The sudden death of Martin Mullin, Corristoona, Ballintubber, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon on the 3rd of October 2020 came as a great shock to his family and the wider community.

Martin was a generous and helpful man and this was reflected in the time he devoted to local projects.

Martin was involved in Rathcarren Group Water Scheme since its formation in 1996. He held the role of treasurer over the years and made sure that the finances were in order and that the water supply was provided to his neighbours and the surround-

ing area. When the new Oran-Ballintubber Group Water Scheme was formed in 2008, Martin made sure it was going to benefit the area.

Martin also sat on the committee of the new scheme until his passing. His presence will be greatly missed and we will dearly miss the long chats and conversations.

“Farmers should be reassured that their local mart is open for business this week,” said Ray Doyle, Livestock and Environmental Services Executive of ICOS (Irish Co-operative Organisation Society Ltd).

“Online mart sales systems have been in operation in Ireland since early April and hundreds of thousands of cattle and sheep have been bought and sold successfully using the various online platforms.

“ICOS has been in direct contact with the relevant marts software provider relating to the two-hour delay of mart sales in 16 mart centres on Saturday.

“As with all technology, the sys-

tems can occasionally experience problems. The server providing the online auction system crashed because of unprecedented traffic of over 30,000 people logging on across all of the mart centres using that system. The provider has now replaced the server and has installed a triple redundancy system to prevent a recurrence of this issue.

“Mart centres operating with other systems performed very well over the weekend without any glitches. Overall trade was marginally up on last year.

“All of the main companies involved are striving to minimise the likelihood of IT problems over

the remaining weeks of the Level 5 restrictions.

“After the system was reinstated, and also taking into account the other software providers that continued to operate on Saturday, mart trade for cattle and sheep remained positive, with mart clearances of over 95% of stock offered and many mart centres recorded prices exceeding last year.

“ICOS has had direct discussions with the Minister for Agriculture on potential contingencies if this scenario is repeated, however the reality is that from here on we will be dealing with internet-based trading as it’s now an integral part of the mart trading platforms”.

“Farmers need to get back around rings” – Cllr Keaveney Cllr. Peter Keaveney has urged the Minister of Agriculture, his Department and NPHET to immediately review the recently introduced Level 5 restrictions for livestock marts.

The local representative said that the ban on farmers buying livestock in marts in person simply must be reconsidered. Under Level 5 restrictions,

livestock marts are not permitted to allow buyers to physically buy livestock around the ring at marts.

Instead, bidding takes place on an online app.

The Glenamaddy native explained: “Online bidding is certainly a welcome addition to how farmers and marts do their business, but only to complement to bidding

in person. Last weekend, we saw that sheer numbers meant the system just couldn’t cope”.

This was reiterated on Saturday, when 15 marts were cancelled with all cattle sent home again.

The app being used to conduct the sales collapsed.

Some of those affected locally included Ballinasloe and Headford marts.

The Fine Gael councillor said: “The internet connections available to many rural dwellers and the technology available to many are not suitable for live bidding. It’s especially difficult for those not up to date with technology.

Marts are also going to lose out on much-needed revenue. We are currently in one of the busiest peri-

ods for marts, with many farmers looking to sell weanlings for vital income as grass becomes scarce, or buy livestock for the winter housing period.

“The government need to immediately review the current operating procedures at marts. We need to let a limited number of buyers back around the rings”.

IFA voices concerns over marts during Level 5 IFA President, Tim Cullinan, has acknowledged the work by the Minister for Agriculture, Charlie McConalogue, his officials, and the marts to keep business operating as close to normal as possible during the Level 5 restrictions.

He said marts provide an essential service to farmers and the agricultural community, being an open and transparent market price competition, with security of payment.

“The autumn trade is crucial,

and it would be hugely disruptive if trade could not continue. The overriding objective for everybody must be to ensure the mart trade continues to be facilitated in a live auction system,” he said.

Tim Cullinan spoke with Minister McConalogue in advance of the Government decision to move to Level 5, stressing the importance of ensuring the marts could function in a workable way for buyers and sellers.

“The provision of viewing facilities for purchasers prior to the sale is important to allow the trade to function in a transparent way”.

Tim Cullinan said that some marts are seeking to have a very limited number of buyers at the ringside, and flexibilities with viewing times, in order to reflect the larger sales in this period.

IFA is in regular contact with the Department and the Minister to ensure the mart system can

function as close to normal as is possible. IFA National Livestock Chairman Brendan Golden said it’s critical that farming has been recognised as ‘essential work’ in Level 5, which allows farmers to go about their daily business.

He said it’s important that we all play our part in supporting the measures in place and that our service providers ensure the health and safety of their employees is catered for.

Farmers’ concerns on TB testing are being heard – IFA IFA Animal Health Chairperson Pat Farrell, has welcomed the Department of Agriculture’s understanding of farmers’ concerns in the new TB testing protocols in Level 5.

The IFA Chairperson said that IFA discussed in detail with senior Department officials the need for flexibilities in TB testing require-

ments as Government controls intensified.

“The Department’s response is balanced and reasonable. It provides farmers who have Covid-19 concerns the flexibility to delay tests, while at the same time allowing for a period of trade after the due date of the test”.

Pat Farrell said the removal of the require-

ment to test calves up to 120 days is significant, and addresses the issue of close contact between farmers and vets at the time of testing.

Critically, he said that these animals will be eligible for internal trade up to 120 days of age, without a TB test.

‘Butchers and abattoirs could close’ Callaghan to raise dispute with Council Roscommon councillor Liam Callaghan (Fine Gael) has expressed concern that a dispute between Local Authorities and the Food Safety Authority of Ireland over funding to cover the veterinary costs of abattoir inspections could see many local butchers and abattoirs closing from the 1st of December.

Cllr. Callaghan explained that no meat can be sold from local abattoirs without veterinary inspection. Safety controls in these food businesses were carried out by the local authority on behalf of the Food Safety Authority.

A funding issue has arisen between both parties and the local authority will cease its contracts on the 30th of November, Cllr. Callaghan said.

Cllr. Callaghan is assured that the FSAI is working to put a new system in place but says many local abattoirs and craft butchers are concerned that if the issues are not resolved they may have no option but to close.

Cllr. Callaghan concluded by saying that funding needs to be found. He said he will be raising the matter with Roscommon Co. Council.

“We can’t have a disruption to local meat supplies such as beef, turkey and lamb in the run into Christmas, not to mention the effects it may have on many local butchers who are so highly regarded in our community”.

Bull sells for €52,000 in Roscommon!

A record €52,000 was achieved for a bull at Roscommon Livestock Mart last Saturday in the Irish Simmental Cattle Society sale.

Clonagh Lucky Explorer, a first prize winner at the National Livestock Show in Tullamore at just three months, was described as “a special boy from birth, the best we have ever bred” by the renowned Clonagh Pedigree Herds breeders prior to the sale.

The bull, born in May 2019 out of Manor Park Handsome and Clonagh Dora, was presented for sale by Lyndsey and Garrett Behan from County Laois and is now destined for the UK.

Simmental bull, Clonagh Lucky Explorer, sold for a new Irish All Breed record price of €52,000 at Roscommon Mart last Saturday.

The bull was sold by Garrett Behan, Ballyfin Portlaoise, and was purchased by UK breeders Jimmy and Vikki Wood from Preston.

PGI will be run by a farmercontrolled monitoring committee Following a recent Beef Task force meeting, IFA President Tim Cullinan said that agreement had been reached to proceed with the application of PGI status for Irish Grass Fed Beef.

The PGI will now be run by a farmer-controlled monitoring committee. A letter requesting the EU Commission to include young bulls, if they meet the grass-fed criteria, will accompany the application.

The Department and Bord Bia have accepted that much more needs to be done to promote suckler beef. €6m in funding has now been committed

over the next three years to develop a suckler-based brand under the control of a farmer board.

“It is clear that something substantial needs to be done to promote suckler beef as a specialised product. In addition to the funding of €6m which has just been agreed, the importance of building on the existing schemes to support suckler production and underpin the development of the brand was acknowledged by the Minister and the Taskforce,” he said.

In relation to the PGI application, the IFA President said the changes secured from the original draft included the removal of

references to travel times and flexibilities on the 220 days at grass. In addition, assessments for the meat and fat colour will only be carried out as part of the standard Bord Bia audit at factories and will not impact on the price paid to farmers for their grass-fed product.

Crucially, under the revised proposals farmers will have the majority on the monitoring and oversight groups for the PGI and the new suckler based brand.

The issue of the eligibility of cattle exported to Northern Ireland will also be dealt with in the covering letter with the application.

Government website says 40% of marts don’t have decent broadband – Naughten According to the Government’s own website, 40% of marts across the country have a poor broadband service which requires upgrading, says Denis Naughten TD. “Solely based on a review of the Government broadband website, Broadband. gov.ie, 68 marts across the country can be identified and nineteen of these marts are included under the National Broadband Plan to have their service upgraded,” stated Denis Naughten.

“With 40% of marts failing to have decent broadband, then the online-only sales of stock needs to be reviewed, particularly with

large numbers of weanlings and store cattle coming to market at present.

“While some marts may be able to manage with inadequate connections, the access to online databases as well as farmers using Wi-Fi to bid for stock from their cars all puts significant pressure on the limited broadband connection speeds.

“I am also aware of the fact that 47 marts designated as having a ‘good’ broadband service were struggling with their connections before sales went online, even though these connections will not be upgraded due to their failure to have the broadband

database corrected.

“Clearly, we need to see flexibility from the Department of Agriculture in terms of buyers having access to sales rings in a socially distanced manner, in light of the broadband challenges ‘officially’ faced by 40% of our marts.

“This is a point that I put to the Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue last Saturday afternoon when the sales system went down. I believe that the Minister and mart operators need to put a sustainable and robust sales system in place, which takes account of the poor broadband connectivity of some mart locations”.

Good numbers of stock were presented for sale, with the store heifers making a lively trade with prices peaking at €3.05.

Dry cows, breeding stock and runners also reported good clearances. In the weanling bull ring, stronger bull weanlings were a tougher sell, as well as plainer-type bulls, while weanling heifers peaked at €3.24 a kilo. Online buyers were more selective last week.

Roscommon MART WATCH Dry cows, heifers, and bullocks: We had a good entry of excellent quality stock on offer at last Friday’s online sale of dry cows, heifers and bullocks. Trade was steady for all classes with the majority of lots getting sold.

Heifers fetched from an average of €2.20 per kilo up to €3.03 per kilo, dry cows made from an average of €1.47 per kilo up to €1.79, and the average prices for bullocks ranged from €1.98 per kilo up to €2.44 per kilo. Numbers of bullocks were small due to next week’s large entry.

On Friday, October 30th, at 11 am there will be a special sale of bullocks (with eighty-seven pens on offer) as well as heifers and dry cows. Sales commence at 12 noon, with intake from 7.20-9.30 am. Viewing is by appointment from 10-10.45 am. There is limited access to the ring for buyers only, and our online bidding facility with LSL is also available.

Gates close at 9.45 am.

On Friday, November 6th, at 11 am, there will be a winter special sale of heifers and a general sale of bullocks and dry cows. Bookings will be accepted up to 5 pm on Thursday, October 29th.

Due to Covid-19 Level 5 restrictions, all cattle sales are online only via our LSL app. Buyers must register to view stock prior to sale, and sellers must drop and leave. Animals will be sold subject and sellers will be informed of

The next sheep assembly for lambs and cast ewes occurs next Wednesday, November 4th, at 11 am. Sheep must be pre-booked.

Ryanair move ‘devastating’ for Ireland West Airport Ryanair have announced that they will suspend flight operations from Ireland West Airport and other regional airports from Saturday, November 14th, until Sunday, December 13th, 2020.

The airline has announced the suspension of flight services due to “a complete collapse” in travel demand as a result of the

ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the current travel restrictions in place. Following the announcement and the suspension of all commercial flights from the airport with Ryanair, Ireland West Airport will close on November 14th and reopen on Sunday, December 13th.

This is a further, devastating

blow for the airport and its staff, where passenger numbers this year have plummeted by over 90%, with annual passenger numbers now forecasted to decline to less than 150,000 for the full year – the lowest in over 20 years.

The airport is calling on Government to provide urgent support

through an expanded regional airports programme for the airport to address the enormous financial losses to support, and protect its cash position resulting from the devastating collapse in passenger traffic as a result of Covid-19, which have been further impacted following this announcement by Ryanair.

Government support is needed for Knock – Murphy Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has lent his support to an ongoing campaign calling for additional Government support to ensure the viability of Ireland West Airport in Knock. Senator Murphy and his Fianna Fáil colleague Senator Lisa Chambers plan to bring a joint motion on this issue in the Seanad this week.

“Knock Airport has seen traffic plummet by more than 80% this year from the 807,000 passengers who passed through there in 2019, creating significant financial difficulties. The critical importance of this airport to the West of Ireland cannot be underestimated.

“Ireland West Airport Knock is a vital life link for the west and north west region from both a business and tourism point of view. It provides an essential connection to global markets for regional businesses and also provides a gateway for much-needed tourists and in attracting foreign direct investment into the region,” said Senator Murphy.

The Fianna Fáil Senator praised the ongoing efforts of Joe Gilmore (Managing Director of Ireland West Airport Knock) who recently pointed out that as a result of the catastrophic collapse in passenger traffic since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, and Government travel restrictions, the airport will sustain losses of close to €4 million.

“I believe additional Government funding is vital to sustain Ireland West Airport Knock through this crisis. It should also be remembered that a number of Local Authorities, including Roscommon County Council, contributed a total of some €8 million in funding towards Knock Airport in recent years, which signals the importance of the airport to the western region,” said Senator Murphy.

Ingredients 100g Madeira cake 100g of Oreo cookies 100g milk chocolate bar, melted 100g white chocolate bar, melted Smarties and icing to decorate + skewers/forks Method Break the cake and cookies up and combine in a food processor with melted milk chocolate.

Use hands to roll mixture into small balls and chill for two hours until mixture turns firm.

Place a fork/skewer in each ball and dip in melted white chocolate to completely cover. Press one Smartie onto the surface of each.

When the white chocolate has set, use the icing to dot a ‘pupil’ onto the Smartie, and use red icing to draw wiggly ‘veins’ around the eyeball.

6 cups Rice Krispies 3 tpsn salted butter 10 oz marshmallows Orange food colouring Rolos/pretzel sticks to decorate Method 1. Melt butter on medium/low heat and add in marshmallows, stirring constantly. As the marshmallows begin to melt, add food colouring as desired. Stir until fully melted.

2. Remove from heat and immediately pour in the Rice Krispies. Stir gently until evenly coated.

3. Let the mixture cool slightly (so that you can mould it with your hands, don’t leave it too long as it will harden).

4. Shape the mixture into balls and place a Rolo or a piece of a pretzel rod in the top for the stalk.

5. Enjoy!

Jack O’Laterns…all you need to know!

The Jack O’Latern is one of the most iconic symbols associated with Halloween.

The first Jack O’Laterns, which were carved not out of pumpkins but turnips, originated here in Ireland from a folktale about ‘Stingy Jack’. The story goes that Jack managed to cheat the devil, and trick him into promising to never take his soul to Hell when he dies. However, because of his wrongdoings, upon Jack’s death God did not let him into Heaven either.

And so, Jack was forced to roam the Earth for the rest of eternity, with nothing but a coal to light his way. Jack placed the coal in a craved out turnip and has been wandering ever since.

He was referred to as ‘Jack of the Latern’, eventually shortened to ‘Jack O’Latern’. The tradition of carving turnips or pumpkins into grotesque faces and placing them outside our homes arose from trying ward off his spirit, and any other evil spirits wandering the Earth in limbo between Heaven and Hell.

Based at our Roscommon site the successful candidate will report to the Director of Operations (Ireland), and be responsible for developing and supporting direct reports to provide Cubis with high-performing teams within our manufacturing and support functions on the site. Other responsibilities will include: • Ensuring CRH Life Saving Rules (LSR’s) are adhered to and employee Health and Safety procedures and engagement are measured accordingly • Management of all aspects of production from raw material to finished product in line with targets • Providing leadership and training for the workforce to promote a world class safety culture • Driving the development of production supervisors and assistant supervisors to assume ownership of man management processes including disciplinary and grievance and performance reviews • Delivering change, as and when directed, to meet business needs, capacity adjustments, resources and employee alignment • Assuming the point of contact for Business Directors, and Managers for advice, innovation, guidance and change control • Managing and delivering compliance for all aspects of SHEQ, while ensuring documentation and data protection standards are adhered to • Ensuring consistent adherence of Company policies, procedures, processes and statutory requirements • Responsible for achievement of site and personal KPI’s • Assist with the preparation of applications for capital expenditure • Creating and working to approved budgets • Liaising with key internal and external stakeholders across all Cubis Sites, as appropriate.

The ideal applicant must have previous experience in a similar or related role at a senior level and preferably within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Finally, sincere thanks to all of Paddy’s friends who shared good company and visited him when he was well. The dear friends who spoke to Packie on a daily basis and made his life better and more enjoyable. We all miss him dearly, but are reassured that his memory will always be with us.

Sports PEOPLE All eyes on Carrick showdown < SEAMUS DUKE

There will be huge Roscommon interest in this Sunday’s Connacht SFC quarter-final between Leitrim and Mayo in Carrick-on-Shannon (throw-in at 1.15 pm) as the winners will meet Roscommon in the semi-final.

Both teams suffered relegation last weekend in the league, with Mayo’s 23-year stay in Division One brought to an end after they were beaten by a point by Tyrone (3-14 to 1-19) in a thrilling game in Castlebar.

Leitrim needed to win against Tipperary to avoid relegation from Division Three but they were pipped by two points by The Premier County (2-11 to 0-15).

Mayo will be strong favourites to advance.

Despite their league relegation, with the likes of Aidan O’Shea, Lee Keegan, Paddy Durcan, Diarmuid O’Connor and impressive new recruits like Oisin Mullen, Mark Moran and Tommy Conroy on board, they still look a top class side.

It would be one of the biggest shocks in the recent history of the Connacht SFC if Mayo don’t win. Win they should, and with a bit to spare too.

Prediction: Mayo.

‘Every Roscommon player is hungry for success’ Report & analysis: Pages 33-35 < SEAMUS DUKE

In normal times there would have been hundreds of cheering Roscommon supporters gathered around the presentation area at Kingspan Breffni Park last Saturday to see Roscommon captain Enda Smith receive the magnificent National League Division Two cup.

However, after the impressive two-point win, the Boyle man was presented with the trophy in silence, with only the players watching the proceedings.

Suffice to say, Enda was thrilled with how the team played, especially given the fact that Roscommon were missing so many players after the Covid-related problems experienced by the squad during the week.

“We were very determined com-

ing up here today. It was well documented that we would be short players, but we knew that we had a very strong team despite that.

We said during the week that there would be no excuses here today”.

It was, he pointed out, a great chance for so-called fringe players to show what they can do.

“This was a great opportunity for lads who have not played a lot of football to come in…lads like David Neary, Padraig Scott and Fergal Lennon, who were not in the 26 last week. They came in this week and showed a superpositive mindset. It just adds to the strength of the panel”.

The Boyle man says that there is a great hunger throughout the squad.

“There is no doubt that every player is hungry for success. Our backs were to the wall this week and we looked on this match as a big challenge. In years gone by that spirit might not have been there as much as it should have

been. I thought we were excellent in the first half. There was a very strong wind out there and we managed the game quite well. The second half was far more scrappy but we held on well. We let them back into it but to win by two in the end was great”.

With the Division 2 trophy secured, Enda is now turning his sights to the championship and that Connacht semi-final on Sunday week.

“I’m glad we have two weeks before we play championship. It will give us a chance to prepare properly and get ready for Mayo or Leitrim”.

During the elongated league campaign, Roscommon drew with Laois and were beaten by Fermanagh, so to win the division was some turnaround.

Enda Smith: “We had a lot of bad luck at the start of the campaign.

We lost Ronan Daly to injury first, and then Shane Killoran was injured in the first minute against

Fermanagh. Then Niall Daly got a red card against Clare but we pulled a win out of the fire in that game. We had to dig deep in a lot of our league games but we have done really well and we had another clean sheet here today which is a testament to the hard work that we have put in as a group”.

Enda agrees that Roscommon have a lot to look forward to over the coming few years if they can keep their panel together.

“It’s vital we hold on to the core bunch of players that we have now. I’m here since 2013 and it is great to have the majority of players training and fighting for places. We have to make it happen ourselves as a team.

“The championship is on Sunday week. It’s knockout. You have to perform on the day. It’s as simple as that. It would be a tough pill to swallow to be knocked out after one game but that’s it (the format) this year. We will prepare as hard as we can”.

FOOTBALL: There are no less that 14 championship games down for decision on a bumper weekend of action. In the football championship, Limerick should be good enough to account for Waterford in Munster on Saturday.

In Ulster, on the evidence of what we saw last weekend, Monaghan will be strongly fancied to account for Cavan in Clones.

On Sunday, Mayo will be strong favourites to beat Leitrim in Connacht, while in Leinster, Louth play Longford and it looks like a tossup between the two. John Maughan’s Offaly should be too strong for Carlow while Wicklow will be fancied to overcome Wexford, having beaten them last weekend in the league.

There won’t be much between Clare and Tipperary in Munster, while in the football game of the weekend Donegal and Tyrone meet in Ballyshannon. I have a slight inkling that Tyrone will win this one by a point or two.

HURLING: There is a very attractive double bill (in Leinster) at Croke Park on Saturday. Dublin were impressive last weekend against Laois, but playing Kilkenny in the championship is a different matter entirely. The Cats should be good enough to progress.

There’s a cracking game in prospect between Galway and Wexford. Wexford could scrape through by a point or two.

In Munster, Waterford may be waiting in the long grass for Cork. There could be a shock in Semple Stadium!

On Sunday, expect the game of the weekend in the hurling championship. Limerick were superb against Clare last Sunday but Tipperary will represent a massive challenge for them.

Tipp could be going in the back door as Limerick look to be back to their very best.

Horses for Courses There is only one meeting today at Powerstown Park in Clonmel over the sticks starting at 1.20 pm. Tomorrow, in the afternoon, there is national hunt racing at Down Royal, away at 12.40 pm, the first of their two-day national hunt festival. In the evening, on the all-weather at Dundalk, racing on the level is off at 5 pm.

On Saturday, the second day of the jumping festival takes place at Down Royal at 12.40 pm. On Sunday, the jump action takes place at Cork at 12.40 pm and also flat racing at Naas, off at 12.30 pm. Monday sees flat racing at headquarters, the Curragh at 1.20 pm.

This weekend sees top-class national racing at Down Royal with the Grade 2 WKD Hurdle and the Grade 3 EBF Mares Hurdle on Friday. The feature on Saturday is the

Grade 1 Ladbrokes Champion Chase supported by the Grade 2 Rainbow Communications Chase and the Grade B WKD Handicap Hurdle.

On Friday there are seven declared in the WKD Hurdle where Gordon Elliott’s Abracadabras is odds on and opposed by two of Henry de Bromhead’s Aspire Tower with Rachel Blackmore and Jason The Militant has Paul Townend on board. The winner will come from this trio and I will trust Rachel Blackmore, Aspire Tower to win.

There is a horse I fancied for the Cheltenham Bumper last year in the opening maiden hurdle, Farouk D’alene for Elliott, and you can be assured he will be well schooled but a short price.

Kerryman and British Champion flat jockey Oisin Murphy passed a major landmark at Southwell last Tuesday when riding Perfect Sign to victory in the 6f novice stakes for his 1,000th winner in Britain. He rode his first

classic winner this year when Kameko won the Newmarket 2000 Guineas. Murphy, a nephew of Gold Cup winning jockey Jim Culloty, leads William Buick in this year’s championship with less than a fortnight left.

Point to Point Corner Saturday’s racing is in the south at Curraghmore in Co. Waterford with 134 entries. On Sunday there are two meetings scheduled, one at Damma House outside Kilkenny with 92 and at Rathcannon in Co. Super savers! Roscommon Gaels’ Goalkeeping Academy Roscommon Gaels’ Goalkeeping Academy for underage boys is back up and running again.

The club has run this academy successfully over the past three years with goalkeepers ranging from U-10 up to U-14 honing their skills in the art of goalkeeping.

It has been run in a block of six-week sessions under the excellent tutelage of Declan Hoare.

The Goalkeeping Academy has been an excellent opportunity for young goalies and we are delighted that ten young lads have committed again this year.

Names for the future include Conor Mulry, Rory Kerr, Laurence O’Connor, Timmy Corcoran, Conor Gilmore, David King, Eoin Ryan, Michael McGuinness, Luke Hussey and Odhran Daly.

Roscommon hurlers almost pulled off the most dramatic comeback in all their years of

playing in the championship when they came from 15 points down early in the second half at Dr. Hyde Park last Sunday to reduce the margin to a single point in injury-time. However, visitors Wicklow held on to win by two in what was a nail-biting finish to a dramatic match.

With 42 minutes gone Wicklow led by a whopping 2-14 to 0-5 and it looked like they would

stroll to the easiest of victories. But Roscommon manager Johnny Keane changed his side around, bringing on a few subs, all of whom made a positive impact. A key change was moving Cathal Dolan to full-forward – suddenly the tide started to turn.

three-quarter mark, the home side were revitalised and driving forward with real momentum.

With five minutes to go Eamon Flanagan drove a 20-metre free to the Garden County net, and the most unlikely transformation was becoming a reality. When Flanagan pointed a free eight minutes into injury-time, the gap was down to just one.

But Wicklow always had Christy Moorehouse to call on.

The diminutive full-forward had a fantastic game and was a thorn in the Roscommon side all through. When he was needed in those final frantic minutes he delivered for his side, scoring four points in the final 10 minutes to edge his team across the line.

With the gap at just one point, Moorehouse scored a superb point from distance to secure the win for his side. In the final analysis he was the difference between the teams.

The story of the first half is easily told. On a bitterly cold day, Wicklow played with the aid of the strong wind and blitzed Roscommon from the throw-in. After only twenty seconds Michael Boland had the ball in the Ro-

scommon net, but the play was called back for a foul. Moorehouse blasted the penalty to the Roscommon net.

Roscommon were struggling all over the field. The outstanding Moorehouse scored a brilliant individual goal in the 16th minute and by half-time the visitors were not flattered by their 2-11 to 0-4 lead.

After Roscommon sub Cillian Egan pointed on the restart, Wicklow added three points without reply early in the second half and now led by 15. They looked home and hosed. But subs Egan and Johnny Coyne had come on and were doing well for the home side, and the tide started to turn. Cathal Dolan’s relocation to the edge of the square worked a treat, and with Hugh Rooney, Eamon Flanagan and Eoghan Coyle also doing well, the revival began.

Of course to fully reverse such a massive deficit was always going to be a tall order, and so it proved.

What a pity for Roscommon that they didn’t start this game as they finished it. They will now await the draw for the qualifiers

which takes place this weekend.

‘I’m sick of moral victories’ Roscommon manager Johnny Keane reflected on that poor first-half display when he spoke to the Roscommon People after the final whistle at Hyde Park on Sunday.

“We are very disappointed. It’s very hard to pull back a lead like that…fair play to the lads, they almost did it. But we should never have allowed them to get so far ahead.

“To be honest, I’m sick of moral victories here in Roscommon, with people saying ye did well only to lose by a few points. I didn’t get involved with Roscommon to lose by a few points. I want to win games. I am so disappointed here this evening”.

Keane acknowledged that Roscommon are still in the competition, giving the team a quick chance to atone for that poor first-half display.

“We have another rattle at it through the back door, but we wanted to go through the front door! We will have another cut at it in two weeks’ time when we see who we draw. We have lots to work on.

“Anyone who saw this game today will realise that Roscommon hurling is not too bad at all.

When we got going we proved that we are as good as any other team in this competition. We missed a few frees today, which was costly”.

company did ‘Inspirational performances by an individual in a National Football League match during a pandemic when much of the spotlight is invariably on his brother…’ – then, oh, you know the rest. (Well, younger readers may need to go to Google).

On Saturday, Donie Smith had one of those ‘Kid in the schoolyard’ days – he could do almost nothing wrong.

It’s Donie’s brother – Roscommon’s rampaging and silky-skilled captain, Enda – who’s been deservedly getting most of the media (and opposition) attention in recent times, but here was a welcome reminder that it’s double trouble for opponents any time the brothers from Boyle are at their brilliant best.

Enda played his familiar captain’s part in a fine win for Roscommon – meanwhile, Donie was unstoppable.

The match didn’t quite reach the heights of the recent game against Armagh, but this was another very assured and slick Roscommon performance. There may only have been two points in it at the end, but

Roscommon were on top throughout, Cavan playing a doomed game of catchup. Victory sealed both promotion to Division One and the Division Two title.

The game featured many moments of individual class from Roscommon’s elusive forwards, but the win was mostly built on a well drilled team (many of them not regulars) engaging a tried and trusted game plan. Even without several key players, Roscommon played with fluency, pace and confidence.

If Roscommon aren’t quite breathing down the necks of the top 5/6 sides in the country, they are unquestionably closing the gap between them and the elite, building with some momentum now on the steady progress of recent seasons.

The strength in depth of the squad is burgeoning right here and right now – rich dividends are likely to follow if that panel remains in place over the coming few years.

A beauty of a point from Diarmuid Murtagh was an early highlight here as Roscommon started with slick passing moves and lots of confidence. It soon became the Donie Smith hour…his free-taking a delight. Further (not much) back, Enda was orchestrat-

ing the mood music, and it must have sounded grim for a game Cavan team for whom Halloweeen came early. Cavan weren’t without their promotion hopes, yet ended up being plunged into Division Three.

Roscommon always looked capable of getting in for a goal, their link-up play that bit sharper than the home side’s. A lovely Ciarain Murtagh point just into the second half opened up a four-point lead (0-8 to 0-4). Then, that great servant Cathal Cregg marched up the middle with the calm of a man who didn’t expect to be stopped until he had done what he came to do – in this case, pop over yet another career score.

On 46 minutes, Roscommon struck with the killer instinct that Cavan must have been wary of. A rapid break had goal written all over it as Roscommon ventured forward, backpeddling Cavan defenders fearing the worst. Donie Smith made good ground before switching to Cian McKeon who crossed into the path of Enda Smith, who parried to the net with relish. It was made in Boyle, for a national audience! Roscommon 1-10 Cavan 0-7.

Cavan plugged away with great endeavour, and they were to close the gap to two. A late (Cavan) goal

Before the end, Donie Smith added two peaches of scores.

Goalkeeper Colm Lavin engaged in one or two phases of play with defenders which were not for the faint-hearted, but overall he was accomplished… and with six consecutive games without conceding a goal, it’s kudos to Colm, the defence and the team as a whole. * On 64 minutes, one of those moments of class I spoke of, this one from Enda Smith.

A Cavan attack ended when a Roscommon defender punched the ball clear. Enda was lurking with intent. The ball was in the open. A nearby Cavan man was favourite… he stretched his leg out as if casually recovering a child’s toy from under a chair. In a blink, Enda stretched out his right foot and spun the ball backwards at speed, leaving the Cavan man staring at thin air…where he was certain a football had just been. In the same movement, Enda flicked the spinning ball up into his hands, before breaking away with the prize. If Ronaldo did it, millions of social media viewers would be applauding (while screaming ‘handball’!).

Smith inspires understrength Rossies to promotion and title

Roscommon footballers turned in another superb display last Saturday when they deservedly defeated Cavan and secured promotion to Division One for next season in a very entertaining contest played at Kingspan Breffni Park.

Roscommon bossed the

game from the throw-in, and although it took a while for their superiority to be reflected on the scoreboard, they were cruising coming towards the end of the third quarter when Enda Smith’s goal put them six points ahead. Cavan improved towards the end of the game but Roscommon saw out the win comfortably, something which will give them a huge boost ahead of the Connacht semi-final against Leitrim or Mayo on Sunday week.

On a cold, crisp, but dry day and under the temporary management of Iain Daly, a much-changed Roscommon began the match on the front foot. Enda

Smith and Tadhg O’Rourke were dominating at midfield, while up front, Cian McKeon, Ciarain Murtagh and the outstanding Donie Smith were always a threat.

In defence, Fergal Lennon and David Neary – both drafted into the team on the day – were superb, and with Sean Mullooly taking up where he left off the previous week against Armagh, the last line of defence looked rock-solid. A word too for Cathal Cregg who acquitted himself very well at centre half-back. Roscommon have now gone six competitive games without conceding a goal. It’s a tribute to the great work be-

ing carried out in the background by the players and management.

It was heartwarming to see every Roscommon player working so hard, and as the game wore on it was clear that every man in a Primrose and Blue jersey was fiercely determined not to let the side down. Other results might have gone their way, but the Roscommon players were determined to secure promotion without any outside help – and they delivered in style.

Despite Roscommon dominating possession, the sides were level at three points apiece after 20 minutes. Donie Smith with a ’45 and a

free, and a trademark point from distance from Diarmuid Murtagh, were the Roscommon scores. Cavan were playing with a very strong breeze at their backs but the very impressive Roscommon full-back line was mopping up any potential threat.

Roscommon scored three points without reply from Donie Smith (two frees) and a Finbar Cregg fisted effort, establishing a lead that they never lost. A Cormac Reilly point for Cavan narrowed the gap, but Roscommon finished the half the better side.

A good display…given key absences?

Seamus Duke: Following a very strong secondhalf display the previous week against Armagh, this was arguably an even better performance from Anthony Cunningham’s men – given the circumstances. The positive Covid test in the squad during the week meant that several players (and a number of the management team, including the manager) were ruled out. The starting team showed eight changes from the side that played Armagh. The players who came in were superb and made light of any concerns that supporters might have about the strength of the squad on duty.

chance, but Raymond Galligan saved well. A minute later Smith raced in on goal again, settling for a fisted point. At half-time Roscommon supporters would have been well pleased with the efforts of their side, as they led by 0-7 to 0-4, with the aid of the breeze to come in the second half.

Roscommon began the second half well. Ciarain Murtagh pointed from 30 metres in the first minute, and although the home side replied with a fine point from distance from Gearoid McKiernan, the visitors were always in command.

Cathal Cregg sallied upfield in the 39th minute to put the finishing touches to a fine team score, and when Ciarain Murtagh landed a free in the 41st minute, the Rossies led by five. Points

from subs Oisin Pierson and Luke Fortune kept Cavan ticking over, but in the 46th minute Roscommon got in for the goal their enterprising play deserved.

After the ball broke in the middle of the field, Donie Smith made tracks toward goal. He flicked a pass to Cian McKeon who in turn floated the ball into the path of the inrushing Enda Smith, who palmed the ball to the Cavan net. It was now 1-10 to 0-7 to Roscommon and they were full value for that six-point margin.

Having put in such an effort it was understandable that Roscommon began to tire and that Cavan would come more into the game.

The home side kicked three points without reply, narrowing the gap to three by the 58th minute. Indeed

they did have a goal chance in the 64th minute, but sub Stephen Smith was wide from close range.

In those final minutes Roscommon kept their composure and man of the match Donie Smith kicked two wonderful points in the 59th and 69th minutes, both from very difficult angles, to keep his side ahead. It was a fantastic return to form for the Boyle man who was back to his best last Saturday.

What a pity that Roscommon’s fantastic, loyal supporters were not there to share in the moment when Roscommon secured this title. (Thankfully they were able to see events unfold on TG4). Next up is the Connacht Championship and that eagerly-awaited meeting with Leitrim or Mayo.

How important is return to Division One?

This is Roscommon’s third Division Two title in six years and the fervent hope will be that the team can have an extended stay in Division One over the next few years. That would be vital if the team is to compete at the very highest level on a consistent basis.

We’re guessing this is a championship boost?

It’s clearly a big boost. The team has momentum.

After those wins over Armagh and Cavan, the Connacht semi-final against Leitrim or Mayo is now the focus.

Over the past few weeks People Sport has been highlighting the strength of the squad of players available to Anthony Cunningham and his selectors since the resumption of play. That fact was underlined again last Saturday when several fringe players put their hands up for inclusion in the championship panel. It’s a welcome headache to have. Roll on Sunday, 8th of November!
