Buying a Property at Auction I am interested in buying a house which will be sold by public auction shortly. Are there any steps I should take before I go to the auction to bid for this property?

There are a number of important issues to consider before you purchase a property at public auction. Once your bid is accepted you are then legally bound to purchase the property.

The Latin term “Caveat Emptor” meaning “let the buyer beware” is particularly relevant when buying a property at public auction. The seller of a property is under no obligation to disclose defects attaching to a property so it is paramount that a purchaser would satisfy himself of the condition of the property before purchasing. The purchaser should ensure that all relevant checks and surveys e.g. a structural survey, are carried out by a qualified professional before bidding on any property at public auction.

You should also engage a solicitor to establish that there are no legal or title problems affecting the property. Your solicitor will raise all necessary title queries on your behalf with solicitors for the vendor before the auction and will advise you accordingly. It is important to be aware of any potential title issue as this will obviously impact on your ability to sell the property in the future.

If you are not a cash purchaser, it is essential that you have the finance arranged to assist you in completing the purchase before the auction takes place.

If you are the highest bidder (after the reserve price is met) on the day of the auction the property will be sold to you. You will be asked to immediately sign the contracts for sale and you will be obliged to pay a 10% deposit. You will be asked to give one part contract for sale to your solicitor and the auctioneer will send the other part contract for sale to the seller’s solicitor. The contract for sale will usually specify a date for completion of the sale when the balance monies must be paid and you will receive the keys.

(They pause to reflect on the fact that heavy rain has led to the rowing being deferred at the Olympics) Not sure I believe any of this!

Huh? …that Michael D…I mean President Higgins, actually invited you to a Garden Party at the Áras…

Oh he did, I have the photos to prove it!

Go on…

I tell you, he really took to me on the phone that day. He loved that I’m into the arts, poetry, Galway United…

Yeah, you said…by the way, I’ve never known you to be into the arts, or poetry…

Well, I like martial arts…

Oh dear…

And I may have taken some poetic licence when I was speaking to him…

Oh dear…

Anyway, he was great company. It was a lovely afternoon.

What? Fancy food on the lawn, a quick hello and then goodbye?

Oh NO! We ended up watching sport and chatting for ages!

So, a great success?

Eh…yeah. Well, until…

UNTIL?

(They pause to briefly try and replicate a backward somersault they’ve seen in the gymnastics at the Olympics; they quickly abandon this) UNTIL? Oh it’s nothing…

It was great…until?

Well, HE wanted to see the hurling. Galway v Waterford…so a few of us popped into their private cinema to watch THAT… Yeah…

Then I suggested we watch the second half of the Lions v South Africa…

Was Michael D…I mean President Higgins, okay with that?

Yeah, sort of…

SO? Then I might have overstayed my welcome…

Oh dear…

I told him I hardly ever miss the Connacht Football Final…and still had hopes of going this year…

REALLY? How daft!

Michael D was slightly tired by now, he seemed to want to wrap up the conversation…

EH…YEAH! Looking back, he was probably being diplomatic when he said ‘Sure any time you’re in Galway for the Connacht Football Final, you can stay in my residence…’

AND? Well, that’s when I said ‘Actually, this year’s Connacht Final is in Dublin on Sunday, and I’m in your Dublin residence NOW! AND you probably have tickets!’

NO! I was sort of joking…

AND? That’s when Sabina winked at Michael D and told him the Taoiseach was on the phone… for some reason, I didn’t see any more of him…I expect he’ll call soon…

What we liked…

The return of indoor hospitality (with certain conditions)…a very welcome ray of hope for businesses (and customers).

What we didn’t like…

The end of a glorious 10-day heatwave!

Beaten but unbowed…Aoife performs heroically in Tokyo! < DAN DOONER

Castlerea boxer, Aoife O’Rourke, lost out on an unanimous points decision to Chinese fighter Li Qian in yesterday morning’s (Wednesday) Women’s Middleweight round of 16 bout at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

O’Rourke was aggressive from the start, stepping forward to confront Li Qian, who had a height and reach advantage over the

Roscommon girl. Qian’s precision helped her to take the first round on the judges’ scorecards (3-2) despite an impressive start from O’Rourke as she took control of the centre of the ring.

The momentum seemed to shift in O’Rourke’s favour in the second round as her tireless workrate forced her more experienced opponent to slow matters down. Qian was warned a number of times

for holding by Algerian referee Sidali Mokretari, as O’Rourke gamely took the fight to the number two seed.

While O’Rourke dictated the tempo, all five judges, somewhat surprisingly, awarded the second round to the streetwise Chinese fighter as her precise shots found their target.

O’Rourke, heroic in her endeavour, was forced to up the tempo even further in the third and clipped

Qian with a couple of cracking right hooks. A bronze medal winner in Rio, Qian survived to claim the unanimous decision, but O’Rourke can hold her head high with her focus now firmly on Paris 2024.

Speaking afterwards, O’Rourke was magnanimous in defeat: “It’s not the result I wanted today. I was beaten by the better girl and everything is a steep learning curve. I’m here in

Tokyo. Six years ago, my goal probably would have been for Paris 2024 and I’m lucky enough that I got into this Olympic cycle. I’ll go back to the gym now and work for Paris 2024.

“I’ve been working really hard in training and working with the coaches. We had a good plan going in, I put the pressure on her, hoping that she’d back down a bit, but again, she just picked me off. She was the better girl on the

day. You learn every day.

I’ll take this on the chin, go back to the gym and keep working,” she said.

Commenting on her overall Olympics experience, O’Rourke said: “Tokyo has been brilliant. We’ve had an amazing atmosphere.

“Everyone’s been great.

I’m going to go back and cheer on everyone now the way they cheered me on today. There’s been a great buzz about the place”.

“Well done, Aoife O’Rourke. A fantastic effort against one of the Olympic favourites!

Local Property Tax rate to be maintained < DAN DOONER

Members of Roscommon County Council agreed to maintain the current Local Property Tax rate at 15% at Monday’s monthly meeting of the local authority.

The decision will see over 90 percent of households paying an annual rate of €90, the same rate most householders paid last year.

The outgoing Director of Services, Martin Lydon, had stressed the importance of maintaining the maximum rate, and said current services could not remain at the same level if there was a

reduction in the LPT. The new re-evaluation year will become effective on November 1st of this year.

Mr. Lydon told members that the current financial projections would see the Council break even by the end of the year with a similar projection for 2022.

He added that the baseline tax figure since 2016 was €10.2 million which had increased to €10.8 million in the past two years. Mr. Lydon highlighted that income generated by LPT remained within County Roscommon and was crucial in order to maintain essential services.

Council pays tribute to ‘gentleman’ Martin Finan < DAN DOONER

Members of Roscommon County Council came together to pay tribute to former employee, Martin Finan, who recently passed away following illness.

Mr. Finan of Lantern Way, Cloverhill and formerly of Southpark, Castlerea was previously employed in the IT Department of Roscommon County Council.

He was laid to rest yesterday (Wednesday) in Oran Cemetery following funeral mass at St. Patrick’s Church, Cloverhill.

Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, Joe Murphy, led the tributes at Monday’s monthly meeting of the local authority, offering his condolences to the Finan family.

Cllr. Marty McDermott also expressed his condolences to the Finan family: “Martin Finan was an absolute gentleman and his wife, Eileen and family, Louise, Marty and Roisin are salt of the earth.

“It was a pleasure to know Martin. He taught us underage football for Oran.

He was an absolute gentleman in every way and he was always very positive no matter how bad the result was. Martin would always see the positive side of it and he’d say ‘We’ll have a better day next time!’ I’m so sorry for the family; he’s a tremendous loss to the parish of Oran”.

Cllr. Tom Crosby described Mr. Finan as a “real gentleman” while Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice said Mr. Finan was a “very nice man and very approachable” during his

time at the Council.

“He was from Southpark just outside Castlerea and went to school in Tarmon.

I’d like to offer my sympathies to his family,” he said.

Cllr. Liam Callaghan offered his deepest sympathies to Mr. Finan’s wife Eileen, daughters Louise and Roisín and son Marty, also to his sisters, Marie and Bernadette, Anne and Geraldine.

Council bids farewell to Director of Services < DAN DOONER

Councillors and members of the executive paid tribute to outgoing Director of Services, Martin Lydon, at Monday’s meeting, as he prepares to take over as Chief Executive of Sligo County Council at the end of next month.

Mr. Lydon’s departure signals a number of changes in the local authority executive from August 30th with Caitlin Conneely taking over as Acting Director of Services in order to fill the role left by Pat Murtagh, who has returned to Westmeath County Council.

Meanwhile, the responsibilities of current director Majella Hunt will expand to include housing, and the manager’s role for Roscommon Municipal Area. Fellow director, Shane Tiernan’s responsibilities have also expanded to include the area of planning, while Sean Mullarkey has been appointed the new Acting Director

of Finance, including the role of digital transformation and IT. CEO of Roscommon County Council, Eugene Cummins, led the tributes to Martin Lydon at Monday’s meeting.

“It was obvious to me and anyone with any contact with him that Martin Lydon has been a Chief Executive in waiting.

“He is a man of great ability, humility and a great communicator. He has a great way with everyone,” Mr. Cummins said.

The Chief Executive said Mr. Lydon had an “uncanny ability to make the most complex things seem simple” and that he leaves Roscommon County Council with the executive’s best wishes and the respect and good will of everyone in the Chamber.

Both Councillors and fellow directors, Majella Hunt and Shane Tiernan, also paid warm tributes to Mr. Lydon, who will take up his new role in Sligo County Council on August 30th.

Roscommon Disability Support Group extends sympathies to the Finan family

The management and staff of Roscommon Disability Support CLG are very saddened to learn of the untimely death of Martin Finan.

Martin was a very active director and company secretary of the organisation for the last number of years.

He freely gave a lot of his time voluntarily to the organisation and will be greatly missed by all. He contribution made a difference to so many people’s lives. He was a great family man, true gentleman, and a friend to many.

We extend our sincere sympathy to his wife Eileen, his children Marty, Louise, and Roisin, and his extended family. May he rest in peace.

Warm tributes to ‘great Roscommon Ambassador’ Paul Healy remembers Michael Fitzmaurice: Page 19 < DAN DOONER

Members of Roscommon County Council paid tribute to the late Michael Fitzmaurice, the former Chairperson of the Roscommon Association in Dublin, at Monday’s monthly meeting.

A native of Ballinlough, Mr. Fitzmaurice was a founding member of the Roscommon Association Dublin in 1952 and served as its Chairperson from 1955 to 2004 when he became its Life President.

He lived in Dublin with his wife of 58 years, Attracta, and the couple had four children and five grandchildren.

Offering his condolences to Mr. Fitzmaurice’s family, Cathaoirleach Cllr. Joe Murphy described him as a very active member of the association.

“In Dublin he was referred to as ‘Mr. Roscommon’. He was Treasurer until 1955 and then took over as Chairperson, a position he held until 2004.

Since then, he had been a very active Life President. As Chairperson he was responsible for editing 21 annual issues of the Roscommon Association Dublin yearbook,” Cllr.

Murphy said.

Cllr. Tom Crosby described Mr. Fitzmaurice as a “great diplomat for County Roscommon” and also extended his sincere sympathies to the Fitzmaurice family.

Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice said: “I’d also like to express my deepest sympathy to the Fitzmaurice family. Michael Fitzmaurice was a great ambassador for Roscommon, and was always down for the reunion years”.

Cllr. Fitzmaurice noted how Mr. Fitzmaurice had ensured that Association members made regular visits to different parts of the county and were supportive of a range of projects here.

Cllr. Tony Ward said Mr. Fitzmaurice “flew the flag” for Roscommon in Dublin.

“I would like to offer my condolences to Michael Fitzmaurice’s wife and family. Michael was flying the flag for the Roscommon Association in Dublin for a long number of years,” he said.

Cllr. Laurence Fallon also offered his condolences: “Michael was the main driver of the Roscommon Association in Dublin right throughout its lifetime as an organisation.

Despite the fact that he was at a fairly advanced age, he was still actively promoting the aims and objectives of the Roscommon Association right up until the last number of months. To his family, I would also like to extend my deepest sympathy”.

Cllr. Valerie Byrne also sympathised with the Fitzmaurice family, paying tribute to Michael’s service to the Roscommon Association in Dublin.

Michael Fitzmaurice, who was in his mid-90s, was laid to rest at Glasnevin Cemetery on Wednesday morning following

He is sadly missed by his devoted wife Attracta, his children Ronan, Declan, Deirdre and Aidan, his sons and daughters-in-law Gregory, Leoné, Shay and Natasha, and his grandchildren Dáire, John, Sophie, Rachel and Sarah as well as extended family and wide circle of friends.

Covid Certificate Helpline ‘an absolute shambles’ Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has called for greater resources for the Covid Certificate Helpline, having experienced the service this week on behalf of a constituent.

Deputy Kerrane said: “I have spent over twelve hours over three days on hold to the Covid Cer-

tificate Helpline. On a number of occasions after waiting hours on the phone, the call has been disconnected. I have been contacted by many people who’ve had the same experience.

ple are traveling in tragic circumstances and this is what they are having to put up with.

“There is no excuse for this shambolic service. We were told in May that the Department had been piloting the Covid Cert since January. The Government weren’t ready in time to

begin using the Cert on July 1st, and then after all of that, a helpline with fifty-five people was set up.

“The Department of Health have confirmed that since July 19th, over 126,000 calls were received with just 10,500 handled. That is 8% of calls.

“I have contacted the Taoiseach’s office, Minister Ossian Smyth and Minister Stephen Donnelly in relation to this helpline. It needs to be ramped up and properly resourced if it’s going to provide any kind of service,” concluded Kerrane.

Feighan receives update on N4-Cootehall junction works Minister of State at the Department of Health and local Fine Gael TD, Frank Feighan, says he was recently briefed on progress towards the development of a road designed turn-off junction for Cootehall of the main N4 road between Boyle and Carrick-on-Shannon by Roscommon County Council.

In an email from the local authority to Minister Feighan, he was informed that the Departure Application has been approved by Transport Infrastructure Ireland. Tenders have now been issued by Roscommon County Council and are due for return in the next three weeks.

It is expected that a contractor will be appointed by midAugust with work on the N4 junction turn-off to begin in late September if all goes well.

“I have been keeping a keen eye on progress and while many may consider it slow, that is the nature of these procurement proceedings. However, slowly but surely, this important piece of safety infrastructure is moving steadily,” Deputy Feighan said.

“I wish to thank Roscommon County Council for their on-going commitment to these vital safety works, and I am glad that progress is evident, which I am sure will be welcomed by the area’s residents”.

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK A column by Roscommon People editor Thursday night Killarney is buzzing with staycationers and sunworshippers alike. The apartment in the grounds of the massive Gleneagle Hotel/INEC arena is lovely, very family-friendly.

In record-breaking sunshine, the attractive main thoroughfare of the tourist capital of Ireland is heaving with people. Normally, there would be thousands of foreign holidaymakers milling around, but this year it’s almost entirely staycationers.

The absence of American accents is particularly noticeable. The outdoor dining/drinking is a massive success in this glorious weather. An available outdoor table is the new gold dust.

Friday The drive to Valentia Island is a delight, the spectacular scenery world class, sizzling sunshine showcasing The Kingdom’s majestic beauty.

But one of the consequences of Covid is that people are interacting much less than in the past. All is not yet normal again. The weekend was notable for the lack of those informal chats with locals which are always such an enjoyable aspect of a visit to Kerry. Spontaneity is a Covid victim.

The locals are extremely nice, it’s just that the lingering restrictions mitigate against the traditional ‘Where are you from?’-type banter.

Saturday We enjoy the hotel facilities (including a game of pitch & putt in extreme heat), more sightseeing, and generally savour the atmosphere in the town.

There’s a great buzz in the High Street, an intoxicating holiday atmosphere…glimpses of the life we knew. A grizzled busker who’s in his 60s belts out ‘Alleluia’, but where’s the violin backing coming from? It’s another (younger) busker perched outside a café on the opposite side of the street. This unique approach – two buskers playing ‘together’, at locations which are many metres apart – intrigues the growing audience. A novelty, it still doesn’t overshadow the actual performance(s). People linger, applause rings out. It’s lovely to see buskers freed.

A very tall, strong and firm-jawed

Garda – straight from ‘Traditional Kerry Garda Central Casting’ if I can so generalise – has the street/town in the palm of his hands. He has a word for everyone. He compliments the young lady running an ice cream store on the fact that she has watered the hanging baskets. The Garda places his Garda cap on the head of a boy passing with his parents. This Garda would quite possibly successfully wrestle an alligator, but his charm, streetwise approach, engaging personality and sheer friendliness suggest no such showdown would be necessary. He is John Wayne without the surliness; Garda gold.

On Saturday evening, with the temperature touching 30 degrees, we went for an outdoor drink at the Gleneagle. As I queued to order, a group of Cork people cheered as their hurlers began to master Clare on the giant screen. Five points up, time ticking. Meanwhile, the ‘pint’ was served in one of those ‘not quite a full pint’ plastic containers. It cost a slightly startling six euro. Still, it went down well. By the time I was served, Clare had rattled in a penalty, and were bearing down on goal in the last minute of injury-time. The Cork party in front of me froze, but their ‘keeper saved them.

Sunday Killarney is preparing to host the Munster Football Final. 2,500 supporters will be in attendance. A chirpy sports guy on the radio says it’s 26 years since Kerry lost in the championship in Killarney. Suddenly it dawns on me that I was there that day…at the 1995 Munster Final (writing a book for Mercier Press ‘The Search for Sam’).

The weather was beautiful that summer (1995) too, as Fiona and I scrambled around looking for accommodation on the Saturday night before the big game. There were no rooms in any inn, until we finally met a landlady who cheerily invoked the ‘Irish B&B solution to being full on a manic weekend’. After ‘phoning Mary on the hill to see if she had any vacancy, our no-nonsense landlady offered us the family sitting room.

We gratefully accepted. Later, after a great night with Kerry and Cork fans in town, we retired to that sit-

Patient but puzzled (and annoyed), I began a loud beeping campaign, supported by fellow motorists. A security man approached and asked him to drive on, but The Man Who Only Stares Ahead refused. I wondered about tapping his window and giving him an earful, but I also thought ‘Don’t get involved with a jerk’. While I was deliberating, he finally took the parking space he was obsessed with (as a car pulled out). Cue several head-shakes from bemused viewers.

If Bad Manners was an Olympic sport, The Man Who Only Stares Ahead might just take gold.

Today, 26 years on, we’re leaving Killarney just as the fans are gathering.

Although it will make our journey back to Roscommon longer, we take the road to Dingle. Stopping for coffee in Farranfore, we chat to an old lady who has her ‘And where are you from?’ radar on. She’s a local, of course. “Oh, Roscommon’s a long way” she muses.

“I’ve a son in Kildare and I used to love going there. But IT was a long way. So then I began to fly there instead of driving!” (Farranfore has its own airport).

“Enjoy the match” I said to her as we left. “I will,” she replied, “back in my house with a fag”.

It’s a struggle for us to get to see any of the football. We missed Mayo’s impressive win against Galway, but saw the first half of Kerry v Cork in a beer garden. As for Dingle, with its pretty necklace of quaint shops and cafes, it was buzzing. There was a great atmosphere, people glad to be back out and about, the weather still sensational. *We had arrived in Killarney just as our columnist Frank Brandon was heading out of town; see Frank’s review on page 12.

I’ve spent all day ringing Government Ministers to inform them that I’m recommending myself for a variety of leading roles. I have advised the ministers that it will not be necessary to advertise any of the said roles, and that no interview process will be required. Naturally I expect a positive response (particularly from Minister Coveney’s office).

As a courtesy, I have informed the Taoiseach’s office that I will be joining the team.

St. Brigid’s sod-turning on new development project marks red-letter day for the club St. Brigid’s GAA club recently turned the sod on their development project, marking a red-letter day in the history of the club. The sod-turning ceremony was performed at a sun-kissed Kiltoom by Club Chairperson Michael McDonnell and Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, Councillor Joe Murphy.

The event marked a very historic day for the South Roscommon club, which now looks forward to the construction of its new development, the club’s

largest since the clubhouse complex was built in 1988.

The project consists of two elements. The first involves the construction of a new building extension comprising a new gymnasium and a community meeting room, and the second element involves essential upgrades to dressing rooms, showers, kitchen, toilets, roof and car park. Work on the development will commence in the coming weeks.

Construction begins on Boyle Pleasure Grounds Enhancement Scheme Roscommon County Council have announced that enhancement works to the Boyle Pleasure Grounds will commence next week (August 2nd). This project is funded by Fáilte Ireland under the Emerging Destination Towns Capital Investment Programme, with match funding from Roscommon County Council.

The enhancement works to Boyle Pleasure Grounds includes widening and resurfacing of existing footpaths, the

construction of paved areas, provision of increased landscaping (as well as upgrade of existing landscaped features), enhancement of existing foot bridges and railings, construction of terraced seating and the provision of street furniture.

The project was developed by the Regeneration Team and Tourism Officer in consultation with Fáilte Ireland and Boyle Town Team, and was designed by Landmark Designs Ltd. The construction

works will be carried out by RJ McKelvey Ltd. The Pleasure Grounds will be closed to the public from August 2nd, for approximately eight weeks. Please note that access to the playground will be maintained during this time. These enhancement works are part of a larger project, which also includes work on the King House entrance to Boyle River and along the northern side of the Boyle River.

NewsPeople newsbriefs Leyden calls for noticeboard at St. Coman’s Cemetery Fianna Fáil Cllr. Orla Leyden called on Roscommon County Council to support the provision of a large information board at St. Coman’s Cemetery in Roscommon town with a map to illustrate the location of graves for visiting family members and descendants.

Responding to Cllr. Leyden’s request, the local authority’s executive said that while such a project was desirable, the council was dependent on both financial and human resources.

The most likely way the project could be completed, it said, was for a voluntary group to train and complete training projects funding by the Heritage Council and Roscommon County Council.

Cllr. Leyden’s proposal was supported by a number of councillors, including Tom Crosby, Kathleen Shanagher, Laurence Fallon, Tony Waldron, Donal Kilduff, Valerie Byrne, and Marty McDermott, who paid tribute to the voluntary work carried out at Ardkeerin and Oran Cemeteries.

New housing development to get green light in Ballinasloe Town The Department of Housing is set to approve the construction of seven twobedroomed houses and four one-bedroomed apartments as well the renovation of nine existing derelict units in Ballinasloe town.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy confirmed that he had met with Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien some months ago to address concern about housing issues in Ballinasloe.

Speaking this week, Senator Murphy said: “Minister Darragh O’Brien and this Government are determined to solve the housing issue, and maintain they will.

“This means the development of twenty new housing units, and is in addition to the thirty-two turnkey houses given the go ahead by Minister O’Brien some weeks ago. The development will be undertaken by Galway County Council”.

The L-6166-23 at Ballinderry & Derrycanan will be closed for 1200 metres East of its junction with Ballinderry Cross.

Independent Cllr. Tom Crosby has called for a tax incentive scheme to be introduced to bring the county’s derelict residential and commercial properties back into full use.

Addressing Monday’s monthly meeting of Roscommon County Council, Cllr. Crosby proposed that the local authority call on the Government to create an incentive similar to the Section 23 Tax Incentive Scheme to address the current housing crisis in the country.

Naughten: ‘Verge trimming needs to be scaled up!’

Fine Gael Cllr. John Naughten has said that verge trimming throughout the county needs to be “scaled up significantly” in the coming weeks as overgrown grass and noxious weeds are becoming increasingly hazardous to road users.

Speaking at Monday’s monthly meeting of Roscommon County Council, Cllr. Naughten raised a motion calling for adequate funds to be provided for works.

The motion was supported by Fianna Fáil Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice, who said overgrown hedges and verges were a “huge problem” throughout the county.

In response, Director of Services, Shane Tiernan, said that extra contractors had been hired during the summer period to complement the existing council fleet.

Jesus tells the crowd in this week’s Gospel that they are following Him for the wrong reasons. They seek Him because He filled their bellies. The Israelites, too, were content to follow God so long as there was plenty of food. Food is the most obvious of signs - because it is the most basic of our human& needs.

We need our S DOYLE SONS daily bread to live. But we cannot live by this bread alone. We need the bread of eternal life that preserves those who believe in Him (Wisdom 16:20, 26).

The manna in the wilderness, like the bread Jesus multiplied for the crowd, was a sign of God’s Providence - that we should trust that He will provide.

These signs pointed to their fulfilment in the Eucha2060848 rist, the abundant bread of angels we sing about in this week’s Psalm.

This is the food that God longs to give us. This is the bread we should be seeking. But too often we don’t ask for this bread. Instead we seek the 01/06/2021 perishable stuff of our everyday wants and anxieties. In our weakness we think these things are what we really need.

‘A Hurl for every Girl’ campaign is launched in Athleague!

‘A Hurl for every Girl’, a campaign to encourage young people to remain in sport, was launched by Athleague Camogie Club in conjunction with main sponsor Ward and Burke Construction recently.

Ward and Burke Construction are strong believers in gender equality, and the company actively recruits, promotes, and encourages women to see past old stereotypes and realise their true potential in a predominantly male employment sector of construction.

Michael Ward, a former sportsman himself, believes in how invaluable playing a team sport is for young people, and for young girls in particular. Along with building character and resilience,

it gives focus and direction at times in life when it is needed most, lifelong friendships are forged, and opportunities are opened up.

The campaign has also received welcome support from global leaders Aurivo and Kepak as well as local dairy farmers.

All three companies offer graduate programmes, and this is where Athleague Camogie Club comes in. The club wants to encourage girls to look to these companies as career options, to promote rural Ireland and the local community. Girls are encouraged to see the bigger picture; these jobs are not just for males, and the potential of young women within these organisations is limitless.

Local dairy farmers have also joined the initiative to help promote rural jobs, and to encourage girls to see farming as a viable option for them and to encourage growth and sustainability of the family farm.

Athleague Camogie Club is part of a rural community and members believe it is vital for the community’s survival and prosperity that young women can stay in their local area if they choose to. Keeping the community vibrant helps everyone not just its local sports clubs.

The new initiative will see each primary school girl (116 students) in the club’s catchment area receive a hurl and sliothar to encourage them to take up the noble sport of camogie

and develop skills such as teamwork, resilience and courage.

Senior Athleague club members, supported by the hard-working executive including Treasurer Miriam Killian, will hand deliver the hurls and sliothars to younger players at the end of this month with further information on how to join the club.

Athleague Camogie has always received wonderful support from the local community, including farmers and businesses and the club has gone from strength to strength in recent years with a number of underage and senior titles.

Art is a powerful form of expression that can not only bring people together in a language that is beyond words, but can also affect our fundamental sense of self. It is always a sign of a functioning society.

The main exhibition is always one of the highlights of Boyle Arts Festival and this year is no exception. Entitled ’Crossings’, the magnificent setting of King House will yet again showcase more than 130 leading artists, both established and emerging, from across the Island of Ireland. Curated

by Paul McKenna, it will continue the strong North-South flavour that has characterised the exhibition annually over the past thirty-two years.

Work by established artists like John Behan, John Shinnors, Elizabeth Cope, Colin Davidson and Donald Teskey will share space with art from emerging artists such as Linda McCann, Mantas Ponderys, Stephen Doyle and Sian Costello. The exhibition features works

in all media, with sculpture being particularly well represented.

2021 will also see the presentation of the second Annual Fergus Ahern Award. Fergus worked tirelessly to place the Boyle Arts Festival on a national platform, earning it a place as one of Ireland’s most anticipated and prestigious summer celebrations of the arts.

All works are for sale, with prices ranging from €200 to €23,000. The exhibition runs from August 5th to 31st, and admission is free during King House opening hours.

Roscommon to feature in Sharon Shannon’s ‘Heartlands’ Fáilte Ireland and TG4 have joined forces with renowned Irish musician Sharon Shannon on a new travel and music programme, entitled ‘Heartlands’. The four-week series, commencing on Wednesday, August 11th, at 8.30 pm, features Sharon Shannon and her niece Caoilinn Ní Dhonnabháin, and showcases the Shannon River region across Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, including County Roscommon.

The first episode (August 11th) will showcase the regions of Cavan, Roscommon and Leitrim, the second episode (August 18th) will showcase the regions of Leitrim, Roscommon, Longford and Westmeath, the third episode (August 25th) will showcase the regions of Westmeath, Offaly and Galway, and the fourth episode (September 1st) will showcase the regions of Clare and Tipperary.

Sharon and her niece Caoilinn Ní Dhonnabháin will slowly cruise the River Shannon discovering Ireland’s

hidden gems while catching up with a host of musical friends, such as Liam O’Maonlaoi (Hothouse Flowers), Steve Wickham (The Waterboys), Eleanor Shanley, Nathan Carter, The Henshaws, Seamus Begley, Mundy, Gerry ‘Banjo’ O’Connor and Susan O’Neill.

The series was supported by TG4, Fáilte Ireland, Waterways Ireland and all nine Local Authorities along the Shannon from the Shannon Pot to Lough Derg (Cavan, Roscommon, Leitrim, Longford, Westmeath, Offaly, Galway, Clare and Tipperary).

Creggs is the place to be… just ask Gordon D’Arcy!

Our man Frank on famous visitors to Creggs, a romantic trip to the Lakes of Killarney, local footballing success, and bringing the turf home after forty years…

On September 27th, 1891, Charles Stewart Parnell arrived in Creggs

and addressed a large crowd in the pouring rain. Subjecting himself to a severe soaking - along with his already deteriorating health and severe kidney disease - led to his early death a little over a week later at just fortyfive years of age.

Now despite the fact that I am a born and bred Creggs man, I would acknowledge the fact that we are not exactly on the beaten track to anywhere. It would be unusual for many travellers to land in our village – they would be more likely to end up in Roscommon or Ballygar or some of the other villages on the main

national roads. However, all of a sudden we seem to be the place to call to!

Last week, I told you of a young Cork girl, Ruth Ni Riada, whom I met as she walked through our little village while retracing the steps of the famous O’Sullivan Beare march, which was undertaken way back in 1603. Well this week, it was the turn of former Irish rugby international, two-time Lions tourist, and Grand Slam winner, Gordon D’Arcy, to arrive in Creggs.

On Thursday afternoon he visited the village as part of a very demanding, four-day, 850kms solo cycle,

which took him through the four provinces of Ireland. He undertook the cycle to raise funds for Barretstown, a specially designed camp in County Kildare that provides Therapeutic Recreation programmes for children with serious and often life-threatening illnesses. He has been a long time ambassador for the charity, and his cycle enabled him to raise much-needed funds, and help them continue their very valuable and necessary work.

The good news is that a large crowd turned out in Creggs to meet him, and he spent an hour or more meeting and greeting the people – in

A magical break in The Kingdom Under normal circumstances, as a fully retired person, I would’ve definitely made it my business to have been in Creggs to meet the rugby legend Gordon D’Arcy. However on Tuesday of last week, Carol and I took off to Killarney for a little break to revisit some of the places we went to on our honeymoon, just under 41 years ago.

We headed off early enough in the sweltering sunshine, called to see the Rasher in Ennis, stopped for a bit of lunch in Adare (although not in the famous Manor), and landed in Killarney in the middle of the afternoon.

Now a few weeks ago, I found myself up near the top of Sliabh Báin, and the truth is that I couldn’t get over the amazing views that opened up before me.

Looking down on the town of Lanesboro, the beautiful River Shannon, the bogland, and the lush green trees and farmlands that stretched as far as the eye could see, I said to myself that there is so

much beauty to be seen, even in areas that may not be as celebrated as the renowned tourist areas like Connemara, the Burren, or Killarney.

However, after a couple of days visiting the lakes and all the other famous attractions like Lady’s View, The Gap of Dunloe, Torc Waterfall, the fabulous Muckross House, and the Black Valley (a new one to me), I have to admit that Killarney really does have a lot to offer. It’s little wonder that foreign and local tourists still flock to the Kerry town in such large numbers – or at least they did pre-Covid.

This time round, the ‘jarveys’ (jaunting cars) seemed to be very busy – particularly those working at the Gap of Dunloe and around Muckross House. However, it was when we ventured into town on Tuesday evening that we realised that in Killarney there was little sign of any Covid impact. The main street was absolutely choc-a-bloc, outdoor eating and drinking areas were full to capacity and there was

no chance whatsoever that we could get in anywhere. There were people milling around everywhere and buskers performing on the street, and as we made a hurried exit back to the peace and comfort of our hotel, we reflected on the ridiculous situation that so many people could be gathered together in the centre of the town, while little country pubs that might only ever have a handful of customers have been closed for more than 500 days.

Anyway, I have to say that we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Killarney, and after such a long time, it was heartening to see that all the natural attractions remain as beautiful as ever. Hopefully, it won’t be as long before we get back again!

However, if you do get the chance to go to the top of Sliabh Báin, go up and look down on the areas below. You will see scenery that is a match to anything you could see elsewhere in the country. It is right here on our doorstep, so do pay it a visit.

He was hoping to meet my brother, the Rasher, who had worked with Gordon’s father back in the day, but of course the Rasher is down in Ennis. The rugby star (D’Arcy, not the Rasher) was more than happy to have pictures taken with everybody, and the word is that he couldn’t get over the Creggs Rugby Club set-up.

That’s the update on our visitors for the last two weeks. Whoever might come our way next week, God only knows, but whoever it is, you can rely on the Roscommon People to keep you up to speed!

Congratulations to Roscommon U-20s!

Out here in Creggs, as you know by now, we sort of straddle the Galway Roscommon border. Some of us support the Rossies and some of us follow the Tribesmen, but on Wednesday evening, we were all united as the young Roscommon Under-20 footballers put Mayo to the sword in the Connacht final, played down in MacHale Park, Castlebar.

The reason for our united front was the fact that our own clubman, Thomas Crean, was a hugely important member of the team, lining out at centre half-back and putting in his usual highly effective and impressive display.

The overall performance of the Roscommon team bodes well for the future, and while their opponents in the All-Ireland semi-final are not yet known, they will definitely fancy their chances. Who knows – they may bring All-Ireland glory back to their loyal and faithful followers.

As for us who follow the wearers of the ‘maroon and white’, last weekend was a weekend to forget as quickly as possible as both Galway teams suffered dispiriting defeats. The hurlers were well beaten by Waterford, and the footballers followed suit the next day against Mayo. For some reason, I only put out my Galway flags on Saturday, and sadly they were back in storage again by Sunday evening. Unless some miracle takes place,

I can’t see them flying for too long next year either.

And so, all I can do now is follow the Roscommon Under20s and wish them well. Win or lose from here on in, we congratulate Thomas Crean and his teammates on their Connacht final victory. Out here in Creggs we are proud to have him in our club, and as we all know, a Connacht medal is very hard to come by.

Finally for this week …

I told you a few short weeks ago about my return to the bog after nearly forty years. The good news is that on Monday, the last of the lovely, dry, black sods landed into the sanctuary of my turf shed (well, it’s some sort of a shed), and as a result of my labours (also of some others who probably don’t want to be associated with the project so they will be nameless), all is home safe and well.

Please God, we will be warm as wool when the winter comes.

I suppose this was a particularly easy year to raise and save the turf, but either way, I enjoyed my bog return and look forward to the same again next year.

Rugby star Gordon D’Arcy rolls into Creggs! < DAN DOONER

Former Irish Rugby star, Gordon D’Arcy, received a warm welcome at Creggs Rugby Club on Thursday last when he stopped by en route to completing an 850km four-day cycle in aid of Barretstown.

The former Leinster centre from Wexford was only too happy to pose for pictures with local rugby fans as he regrouped ahead of his next leg, which took him to Belmullet in Co. Sligo.

his heart and he wanted to raise much-needed funds and awareness for the children’s charity.

“I’ve been an ambassador and patron of Barretstown for twenty years now and like everyone during lockdown, I was getting into fitness and I got a stationary bike. I’ve had a few shoulder issues since I finished playing but the body’s been fairly good. We had our daughter Meadow in November so I’ve landed my wife with a seven-month-old at home!

“I hadn’t really pushed myself physically or mentally since I finished playing rugby so I said I really wanted to do something.

I decided to set myself a fundraiser and try and raise a little bit of money for Barretstown and more importantly, raise some awareness for them,” he said.

“Every year Barretstown has to raise €5.5 million to keep the gates open and this year they had to raise an extra €1.2 million on top of that so this cycle is all about raising a little bit of awareness.

“I also wanted to tie in the rugby clubs too so I

picked a route and found rugby clubs around it and off we went. The response from the clubs has just been amazing. The turnout here at Creggs has been fantastic and we’ve just come from Galwegians, where they made an U-14 player, a young guy called Jack, President of the club for the day. That was a beautiful touch. I’m from a rural club, Wexford Wanderers, and I know how important community is to clubs”.

Gordon, who completed two tours with the British and Irish Lions during his career, was suitably impressed with the facilities at Creggs Rugby.

“It’s incredible but look how many kids there are around here so I think it’s probably just about meeting the need. It’s brilliant.

I was coming in with Aidan (Farrell) on the bike and he was explaining to me that they are building female-friendly changing rooms and how they’re trying to keep players playing at those drop-off points of ages 12, 16 and 18. It’s so important to keep both girls and boys involved in sport.

now that I chose to come to Creggs and that I’m seeing something I’ve been talking about for so long – encouraging kids to play and enjoy sports so that there’s a chance they’ll play for longer,” he said.

Boyle Arts Festival tickets go on sale Following ongoing communication with the Department of Health, the Boyle Arts Festival organising committee took the decision to delay the sale of tickets for the event. Tickets will now go on sale online this morning (Thursday 29th) at 10 am.

Tickets can only be purchased at www.boylearts.com, where there is a full list of events available including full artist information, dates and times.

Organisers remind patrons that tickets are non-transferable, can only be purchased on the website, and will be released over a five-day period.

A statement from the organising committee read: “Please note that because we are still restricted by current health guidelines, a very limited amount of tickets will be available for each event and we understand that many may be disappointed if they are

unable to attend.

“Masks will be mandatory at all our events, social distancing will be in place, and hand sanitisers will be at the entrance to all venues. Any additional requirements for entry that may be introduced by the Government in the coming days will be published later.

“This information is correct at the time of going to press, but any changes to it will be pub-

Roscommon breathes a sigh of relief as indoor drinking and dining resumes At last, following 497 days of imposed restrictions (mainly on so-called ‘wet pubs’ who haven’t been able to do business since March 2020), bars and restaurants can finally reopen for indoor services as of Monday last.

Now, given there was nearly a rebellion when the Government used to enforce a closure of pubs on Good Friday, I have to ask – how on earth did we all survive the entire lockdown without

enjoying the privilege of going to ‘the local’ when we felt like it? Mind you, these facilities are only open to vaccinated people or to those who’ve recovered from Covid-19 in the past six months - and of course to any accompanying minors.

I don’t wish to sound preachy, but in the interest of safety and keeping these businesses open, I would like to remind readers to please support and embrace

this opportunity and to enjoy it for what it is – a step towards normality!

However, while you’re doing this, do have respect and consideration for the poor management and staff who’ve been placed under additional pressure in a bid to wade through a shed load of guidelines so that everyone can enjoy a safe drinking/dining experience. Bear in mind that while it has been

reported that 25,000 workers will sign off the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP), one in four restaurants will not be opening for indoor dining for the simple reason that they cannot get enough staff.

For the ones who do manage to get up and running again, while I wish them luck, I also don’t envy them having to painstakingly verify customers’ proof of vaccination or their recovery

A big shout-out goes out to Team Ireland for the positive way in which they represented us at the ‘Parade of Nations’ as part of the Olympics Opening Ceremony in Tokyo last week.

In case you didn’t see it, boxers Kellie Harrington and Brendan Irvine were our country’s representatives, and they led a small delegation of Irish athletes into the purpose-built Olympic Stadium for a ceremony that, due to Covid concerns, only allowed up to 1,000 spectators.

However, refusing to allow these unusual circumstances dampen their spirits, our lads in the timehonoured, good-humoured spirit of the Irish, showed respect and appreciation to their host country by bowing, in line with the Japanese tradition, as the home team entered. Pure class, lads. I am so proud of you all. C’mon Ireland!

This year, with few festivals and shows happening, less GAA than normal etc., we’ll be challenged more than ever.

Thankfully, as we prepare for the pending copy dearth in newsrooms, it appears that some eh…archbishops, may be about to come to the rescue.

In addition, he congratulated the children, their parents and teachers for keeping alive the spirit of the Texaco Children’s Art Competition throughout Covid-19, despite the interruption to normal school activity.

“Through their enthusiasm, dedication and commitment, those who have

submitted entries continue to demonstrate the importance that art has in the lives of our young people,” he said.

First held in 1955, the Texaco Children’s Art Competition is widely acknowledged as the longest running art sponsorship in Ireland. It is hosted annually by Valero Energy (Ireland) Limited – the company that markets fuel in Ireland under the Texaco brand.

He added: “Being a Cork native, and a former Bishop of Killaloe, I have, as they say, a lot of ‘skin’ in the forthcoming All-Ireland series. May the best team win!”

That’s the serious and the sporting covered; as of yet no archbishop has ventured a view on Love Island.

IFA: Farmers excluded from renewable energy strategy

IFA President Tim Cullinan has said that while the announcement of a significant solar farm coming onto the grid in Cork is positive, the Government is failing to embrace the potential of farms to generate renewable energy.

“Almost every farm has the potential to generate renewable energy for its own use and ultimately generate power for the national grid. However, the focus of the Government has been on large-scale projects,” he said.

“While this might be the quickest way to get more renewable energy onto the grid, it is a lost opportunity to include farmers at a local level.

“A workable microgeneration scheme could

reduce input costs, provide a supplementary income source for 130,000 farmers, and create much needed rural employment.

There needs to a be a clear Government strategy to facilitate grid connections for farmers and properly support the installation of rooftop solar and other key infrastructure”.

The IFA President said the recently published draft micro-generation support scheme was “inadequate” and would not work for farmers.

“The Government needs to harness the potential of on-farm generation instead of just paying it lip service,” he said.

“Farmers want to be central players in Ireland’s energy transition. It is hap-

pening in other countries, but this Government is dragging its feet.

“For example, bioenergy is a thriving industry across Europe. Despite our natural advantage in producing bioenergy due to our mild climate and fertile land, Ireland is ranked 27th out of twenty-eight Member States regarding its use of renewable heat, according to the SEAI. “Bioenergy, particularly biogas, could reduce the environmental impact of the agricultural sector.

The environmental and climate benefits of biogas are significant. Together with a reduction in emissions and increased energy security, it allows for the exploitation of agriculture by-products. Furthermore,

the by-product of anaerobic digestion can be used as an organic fertiliser.

“It is vital that farmers and communities are sup-

ported and that barriers are removed for them to assist in Ireland’s future energy generation,” concluded the IFA President.

Castlerea MART WATCH There were 450 animals presented at the sale on July 22nd, with trade holding very well, especially for the quality lots on offer.

The bullock trade witnessed no change in demand or prices, with the top-quality light stores exceeding €3 a kilo, while the heavier lots made up to €1,710 with less heavier stock on offer this week.

The heifer ring saw light stores peak at €2.88 a kilo and the heavier heifers made up to €1,760.

The dry cow trade saw prices peak at €2.36 a kilo while €2,120 was paid for a Limousin cow and her Charolais heifer calf at foot.

Demand for calves and runners is very good at the moment as farmers are out in force replacing sold stock while the weanling ring with better quality lots on offer this week saw heifers make up to €1,110 and a ten-month-old Charolais bull made €1,410.

Cows with calves at foot made from €1,100 to €2,120, springer cows made up to €1,250 with breeding bulls making up to €1,800, young calves made from €100 up to €620 for a continental heifer calf, and runners made from €240 to €750.

Linking recent heatwave to climate change is ‘sickening propaganda’, says Fitzmaurice Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice has described linking the recent heatwave to climate change as “sickening propaganda”, following an apology from the Managing Director of RTÉ News for not making a clear connection between the recent high temperatures and climate.

Jon Williams took to Twitter this week to apologise for the State broadcaster’s recent coverage of Ireland’s heatwave, but the rural TD was left far from impressed.

you were monitoring radio and television in recent days, some outlets were nearly disappointed that we didn’t break the record for the highest temperature ever recorded in Ireland – which stands at 33.3 degrees Celsius, recorded in Kilkenny all the way back in 1887,” Deputy Fitzmaurice said.

Ifac urges Roscommon farmers to consider LEADER funding Ifac is urging Roscommon farmers to avail of LEADER Transitional programme funding in order to grow and diversify.

Patrick Black, Food and AgriBusiness Executive, believes the programme, which was launched in April of this year, can bridge the gap between the 2014-2020 LEADER Programme and the commencement of the next EU Programme in 2023.

“LEADER sets out to support rural businesses seeking to reach new markets, expand, innovate and diversify in response to macro trends such as Covid-19 and Brexit.

Alongside the wider fund, a specialised stream for food businesses is available under the LEADER Food Initiative,” he said.

The application process itself can be lengthy but the benefits for a rural business are significant.

“For example, we re-

cently worked with an ifac food business client, who was diversifying their product offering, to secure €120,000 in LEADER funding. While it was a detailed procedure, the funding has made a monumental difference to the business’ growth, helping to drive the business forward”.

The level of LEADER funding on offer varies depending on the project and the county in which a business is based, but according to Mr. Black, funding up to 75 percent, to a maximum of €200,000, is generally available for capital works, consultancy or machinery upgrades.

“In ifac, we are working closely with a number of businesses utilising LEADER funding to grow their rural businesses. The types of businesses vary from established food businesses looking to expand, to start-up farm di-

versification projects. Eligible businesses are those with an annual turnover of up to €10 million and employing fewer than 50 people,” he added.

“In most counties LEADER funding is administered by a Local Community Development Committee (LCDC). Some LCDCs operate open calls, which means they will accept applications at any point throughout the duration of the programme.

“Others operate targeted calls, which means they will only accept applications during particular periods.

“Having worked through the LEADER application process from initial engagement through to funding drawdown with several businesses, we have identified some key learnings to help with a successful application,” he said.

Tánaiste visits Ballinasloe Enterprise Hub An Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Leo Varadkar visited Ballinasloe Enterprise Hub on Friday last (23rd). As part of the Ballinasloe Area Community Development (BACD), the group the facility recently received €63,000 in funding under the Connected Hubs Scheme.

Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan welcomed the Tánaiste to Ballinasloe and said the visit afforded him the opportunity to meet team behind BACD as well as some of the 30 start-ups, entrepreneurs, and 180 employees based in the Enterprise Centre.

“BACD offers enterprise space, hotdesk and remote working facilities for start-ups in East Galway and South Roscommon combined with key initiatives to support retailers and businesses in town,” Senator Dolan said.

“As the catalyst for many projects including the new ‘Shop Local’ signage and Shop Ballinasloe banners for restaurants as well as new Christmas lights last year, BACD also act as a liaison point with Galway County Council and funding agencies.

“BACD is a fantastic example of the impact of government funding of development associations guided by the expertise of the BACD boardmembers.

Chairperson Seamus Duffy and Manager Lyn Donnelly gave the Tánaiste a tour of the premises along with meeting some of the companies”.

The Tánaiste commented on the diverse nature of businesses based in the centre and said what

‘Apprenticeship system in crisis’ – Kerrane Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has accused the Government of hiding the full extent of what she says is a “crisis in the apprenticeship system”, as 735 apprentices remain on a waiting list for off-site training in the Roscommon and Galway area.

“67 percent of apprentices (13,440) are now on a waiting list to access off-site training,” she said this week.

“Of those apprentices unable to gain access, 735 are on waiting lists from the Roscommon and Galway Education and Training Board area. The majority of these are in electrical and plumbing”.

The Roscommon TD said the number of those on the waiting list has steadily increased since March.

“In March of this year, there were 6,928 apprentices on a waiting list to access the off-the-job training. By May, that had increased to 9,071 apprentices.

When this was raised again in the Dáil on the 8th of July, I was shocked to hear that there were ‘over 10,000’ on waiting lists according to the Minister.

“Figures released to Sinn Féin by the Department show that the Minister

has been done in Ballinasloe through Connected Hubs is a “great example for other towns

Funding boost for Connected Hubs Scheme

Projects in Co. Roscommon have received close to €330,000 in funding under the Connected Hubs Scheme, the Department of Rural of Community Development has announced.

Arbutus Innovation Centre in Daneswell Business Park, Monksland is set to receive €75,000, with The Spool Factory in Boyle also receiving €75,000. Roscommon County Council has also received €150,000 to develop Broadband Connection Points in rural areas.

A total of €8.8 million has been available for 117 projects nationwide as confirmed by Minister Heather Humphreys this week.

Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan welcomed the news this week.

“I’m delighted to see the Arbutus Innovation Centre, based in Daneswell Business Park in Monksland, Athlone, win €75,000 to increase the number of companies and entrepreneurs supported in the hub by at least 60 percent.

The Arbutus Innovation Centre is a purposebuilt work hub, incubator, and research centre,” she said.

“They will also support local community groups by giving access to meeting rooms.

As well as making the facilities more energy efficient and significantly more comfortable to work in, it is ensured that facilities are safe and in line with Covid-19 regulations.

Its facilities are upgraded and there is added wheelchair access and signage. The Spool Factory in Boyle also won €75,000 to adapt the ground floor space for companies, in addition to the existing top two floors.

“Roscommon County Council has received close to €180,000 to develop Broadband Connection Points (BCPs). It is great to see Athlone, Kiltoom, Drumboylan, Boyle, Dangan, Elphin, Tulsk, Castlerea, Castleplunket win funding to upgrade facilities. This investment in BCPs will install access control and security systems, energy efficient and heating upgrades, and disability access upgrades,” Senator Dolan concluded.

Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines available in seven Roscommon pharmacies

The Pfizer- BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine is now available in seven pharmacies in Roscommon, the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) has confirmed. The IPU is now calling for this to be extended, so that all pharmacies registered to administer Covid-19 vaccines have access to the Pfizer vaccine.

Participating pharmacies in Roscommon include: Boyle Total Health Pharmacy; Conlon’s Chemist, Athleague; Kearney’s Chemist, Castlerea; McDonnell’s Pharmacy, Strokestown; McSharry’s Pharmacy, Knock Road, Castlerea, Murphy’s Total Health Pharmacy, Ballaghaderreen; Tully’s Total Health Pharmacy, Castlerea. Pharmacies started vaccinating in mid-June and to date have administered over 123,000 vaccines nationwide. This has predominantly been the Janssen vaccine, available to people aged 18 to 34 and to peo-

ple 50 years and older in over 950 pharmacies nationwide.

A smaller number of pharmacies, chosen because of their distance to the nearest vaccine centre, are also offering the Pfizer vaccine to patients aged 18 and over, in line with the HSE Vaccination Centres.

Darragh O’Loughlin, Secretary General of the IPU said: “Pharmacists are trained, experienced vaccinators and, after long campaigning to be able to vaccinate their local communities, are delighted to finally have the opportunity to support the vaccination campaign. Now the people of Roscommon can receive a vaccine in the convenience and comfort of their local pharmacy.

People can book an appointment directly with their local pharmacy and, when called, attend at a set time and be on their way home all within 30 minutes.

“Since pharmacists began administering Covid-19 vaccines there has been universally positive feedback and a huge level of demand from all age groups. Pharmacists are delighted to be supporting this national campaign.

“The ongoing level of demand will need to be matched by supply or pharmacies will be forced to suspend vaccinations. We know that supplies of the Janssen vaccine may be limited for a time, therefore we are calling for all participating pharmacies to be provided supplies of the Pfizer- BioNTech vaccine as well”.

While an impressive shortlist could be drawn up, I’m pretty sure I’ve never met a person who was as passionate and proud of County Roscommon as Michael Fitzmaurice was.

Countless thousands of us are rightly proud of Roscommon, its people, history and heritage; many have displayed that in selfless ways. Michael was certainly unique in his extraordinary devotion to his native county. And he backed that devotion up with action.

What remarkable service he gave to this county, all in a voluntary capacity, all done with the courtesy, modesty and generosity of spirit that so characterised this gentlest of men.

While I knew Michael very well for over 30 years, he had almost reached retirement age by the time we first met.

In the late 1980s, as I was finding my feet in the Roscommon Champion, I began to have dealings with the Ballinlough native, then – and always – the unassuming driving force behind a variety of Roscommon-related activities in the Capital.

The enormous good that he did in Dublin over several decades has been well documented. Michael was instrumental in forming what became known as the Roscommon Association in Dublin in 1952. They were different times. The new organisation made a very positive contribution. Roscommon people based in Dublin now had a social outlet. Roscommon people coming to Dublin were able to call on the association for help and advice, to do with employment, accommodation, etc.

The Roscommon Association was extremely proactive in supporting Roscommon GAA teams, Roscommon-based charities too. The group didn’t confine its activities to Dublin either; members regularly travelled to Roscommon to support causes here, in person. In latter years, Michael was very involved in the successful Roscommon International Reunions.

Over several decades, with great support from loyal committee members and supporters, Michael Fitzmaurice was the heart and soul of the Roscommon Association. He was innovative, passionate, generous and tireless. He was greatly supported by his wife Attracta, a wonderful lady. An exceptional couple who tirelessly supported Roscommon initiatives, it was always an uplifting experience to meet them.

In 1980, having already done our county some considerable service from the Capital, Michael Fitzmaurice launched the Roscommon Association Yearbook.

This annual publication became a ‘mustread’ for Roscommon people at home and abroad. Michael worked extremely hard – a labour of love, no question – gathering content and editing the book.

The Yearbook was particularly well received by Roscommon folks abroad.

The various Roscommon Associations worldwide – all of them thriving at the time – submitted reports and photographs. Michael meanwhile ensured there was a great mix of historical articles, sports’ summaries, opinion pieces, social photos, etc.

During Michael’s 21 years editing the yearbook, I was happy to contribute regular articles. He was always a pleasure to deal with. He was very proud of the yearbook, but extremely humble about his own role. In truth, the yearbook would never have been published were

it not for Michael’s unstinting commitment to it.

Later, his great friend Mike Lennon took over as Editor, and later still I stepped into the hot seat for a few years (we renamed the Roscommon Yearbook ‘Roscommon Life’).

Michael Fitzmaurice was a most deserving and popular recipient of a Co. Roscommon Person of the Year Award when the Roscommon Champion ran that annual event. How fitting that such a great Roscommon man would be so honoured.

Fiona and I had many happy social engagements with Michael and Attracta, ranging from events in Roscommon to gatherings in Maye’s in North Frederick

Street, and Roscommon Association Dances in the city.

His death last Sunday leaves a huge void, for his family, his friends, his county. A proud Ballinlough man, he wore his love for his home county with the most tremendous pride. A long-time employee of Arnotts in Dublin, he was only on loan to the Capital, for while he happily settled in Dublin many decades ago, he never really left Roscommon.

Michael’s legacy to his beloved county is enormous. The work he did, with such joy, enthusiasm and positivity, lives on in print and in our memory.

The good that he and many of his colleagues did impacted very positively for so many people, men and women who

were grateful for the doors which were opened by the Roscommon Association, grateful too for its social dimension, and for its charity work.

Most of all, when I think of him now at this sad time, I think of a man with a gentle disposition...always friendly, courteous, modest and good-humoured.

Sincere sympathy on Michael’s passing is extended to his wife Attracta, to their sons Ronan, Declan and Aidan, their daughter Deirdre, their grandchildren and extended family members. May he rest in peace.

Michael Fitzmaurice made an enormous positive contribution to the county he so passionately loved. He was a great Roscommon man.

Calling all cars: It’s ‘PARK ‘N’ PARTY’ time people! < MIRIAM KERINS

The pandemic and all it entails has quite literally wiped out a year and a half of our social activities. Therefore, it should be no surprise that the current question on everyone’s lips is: “What’s the first thing you’re going to do when the country fully opens back up?” Some people can’t wait to dine indoors, some can’t wait to go abroad on holidays, and some are keen to go to a live gig. If the latter is you, then read on, because we’ve got some great news.

This week, I caught up with Fair City heartthrob Ryan Andrews who has, over the past thirteen years, become a household name playing familyfavourite Sean Cassidy.

Arriving in the soap’s fictional village of Carrigstown as a fresh-faced teenager, regular viewers will know that Ryan has been at the centre of some of the programme’s biggest storylines. Spoiler alert – I’m told that things are set to ‘get really heated over the next two weeks’ for Mr. Cassidy, but you didn’t read that here! However, what you did read here is all about Ryan’s new venture where he’s calling all cars to ‘PARK N PARTY’ at his new venture, a safe, outdoor family experience, guaranteed to satisfy the appetite of Ireland’s entertainment-starved masses

in a socially-distanced, yet fun-filled way.

In fact, when it comes to entertaining us, Ryan’s got some pretty stellar credentials. From the age of ten, this multi-talented Dubliner has worked constantly in theatre, stage and TV (he got his big break in RTÉ’s The Clinic), he was a finalist and a firm favourite with viewers in Dancing with the Stars, and he has performed in numerous stage and theatre productions.

In addition, Ryan has won a Best Actor Award for his role in the short film ‘Prodigal Son’ in New York’s Buffalo Screams Film Festival. So you get it, this twenty-eight year old trouper has more strings to his bow than the RTÉ concert orchestra.

Teaming up with old pal and fellow Panto star James Patrice, this Prince Charming tells us he cannot wait to get back performing live and “have the craic” with James: “It’s the first time in a year and a half that we can perform in front of a live audience, and I cannot wait for this.

Ryan explains: “Due to us receiving this grant, this new show will employ up to seventy entertainment professionals. So apart from the performers, there will be employment for designers and technicians etc. too”.

While I was chatting with

Ryan, he was keen to let readers know that he has “fond memories” regarding a trip to Roscommon.

“I work in the Spar on Fair City and I was a brand ambassador for Spar. One of my jobs was to cut the ribbon on the Spar in Castlerea. It was a good few years ago now but we had a lovely day visiting Roscommon. My dad came with me and he went into the local bookies to place a bet on a football match

and when we drove home to Donaghmede (Dublin), he found out his team had won and he was delighted.

He went to the local bookies to cash in his winnings but was told there was an issue with it or something like that. We just hopped back into the car and drove back to Roscommon where he had no problem at all cashing in his winnings. The girl in the bookies was lovely. There was no issue whatsoever,”

laughed Ryan, before joking, “Mind you, by the time we’d spent money on petrol and stopped for a bit of lunch, he’d almost used up his winnings!”

Hopes high as minors travel to Galway Electric Ireland Connacht U-17 Football Championship Semi-Final: Galway v Roscommon at Tuam Stadium this Friday at 7 pm < SEAMUS DUKE

After their excellent win against Mayo on Friday last, Roscommon’s minor footballers have another mountain to climb when they face Galway in Tuam this Friday night.

With no colleges action or Connacht Minor League to look back on, it is hard to know what standard of opposition Galway will provide but we do know that Roscommon have been very well prepared and will have the momentum of that very good victory against Mayo in the locker as they take the field.

What will give Roscommon followers great cause for optimism is that every sector of the Roscommon team which took the field last week against Mayo was tested. The attack produced the goods in the opening half, scoring four goals, while in the second half the middle third and the defence came to the fore as they dealt with a Mayo

team looking for match-saving scores.

A number of Roscommon players impressed last weekend including Ethan O’Reilly, DJ Hession, Shane Walsh, Colm Neary, Bobby Nugent and Shane McGinley, who were all outstanding but it was a real team effort and Roscommon have top-class performers on every line.

Roscommon manager Enda Nugent told People Sport on Tuesday that although he was very happy with the performance against Mayo, there were plenty of things to work on for the Galway match.

“It was a good performance against Mayo but we know that travelling to play Galway will be difficult and they will be very strong. If we can show the same kind of spirit that we had against Mayo we will be in with a good chance,” he said.

There is a target on our backs now after the win against Mayo, and Galway will have been warned so we are expecting a really tough challenge but it’s great to be in this position,” he concluded.

If Roscommon can re-discover the type of form that we saw against Mayo there is no reason to think that they cannot qualify for the Connacht final which would be a serious achievement.

Prediction: Cork All Ireland SHC Quarter-Final: Dublin v Cork in Thurles at 7 pm The Dublin win against Galway will have Cork on edge but the Leesiders were excellent against Clare and should advance to a semi-final. Patrick Horgan is a class act and could well be the difference between the sides.

Horses for Courses This weekend’s action There are four days of Ballybrit left, starting this afternoon. Today and Friday are both national hunt meetings sponsored by Guinness. The main race today the Guinness Galway Hurdle meeting starting at 4 pm, and tomorrow is another afternoon start with the Grade B Guinness Handicap Hurdle featuring and again off at 4 pm.

The action switches to the flat on Saturday at 1.50 pm with the top race the Galway Shopping Centre Handicap worth €100,000 and again on Sunday the festival finishes on the level with the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Handicap the centre of a card starting at 2.15 pm.

Bank Holiday racing on Monday is at Cork 1.40 pm and Naas at 1.15 pm. On Tuesday at Lenebane races with a national hunt card.

There is plenty of television coverage this week starting this evening with four races from Galway on RTÉ 2, tomorrow there are six races from Ballybrit on TG4.

Cross channel there are four races from Goodwood today, five tomorrow and five races on Saturday, and two races from Newmarket on ITV on Saturday and carried on Virgin Media 1.

Aidan O’Brien saddled two of the five runners in the King George Queen Elizabeth in Ascot on Saturday, which was won by one of the two juveniles in the field, Adayar trained by Charlie Appleby, who beat the Gosden’s Midriff and O’Brien’s Love by 1¾l and the same. The winner was driven clear by William Buick over a furlong out and stayed on well to beat the runner-up under David Egan with Ryan Moore on the third.

Galway Review The festival opened last Monday with a flat card and the 2-Y-O Maiden was won by the Michael O’Callaghan owned and trained I Am Magic who made all under Leigh Roche, from outside Abbeyknockmoy, to beat Ballydoyle’s Ancorage and Dermot Weld’s Duke De Sessa. Roche was seen at his very best holding on by a neck and a head.

The second saw Ciaran Murphy, who trains outside Mullingar, win with Black Cat Bobby ridden by Gavin Ryan by similar margins from Gavin Cromwell’s Li Mu Bia and Weld’s Zumoradda in a blanket finish that saw Rock Etoile and Cisco Dancer a neck and head further behind. Jessica Harrington’s Maud Gonne Spirit with Shane Foley aboard won the 7f handicap by ½l

and a neck from Turbine and High Altitude. Joseph O’Brien opened his account with Merrior in the 1½m handicap ridden by leading apprentice Donegal man Dylan Brown McMonagle beating Nibiru and No Thanks 2 ½ l and 2l.

The feature The Amateur Handicap saw Dermot Weld once again in the winner’s enclosure as Finian Maguire rode Coltor to a ¾l win over Aubrey McMahon on the Willie Mullins trained Foveros with Aine O’Connor third on Harry Fry’s English raider Litterale Ci third. It was Weld’s first winner in the race since Jane Mangan won it in 2012 on Midnight Music. Weld has now trained eight winners and ridden four winners of the race. He first won it as a 15-year-old jockey on Ticonderoga 57 years ago.

In the penultimate handicap Jessica Harrington and Shane Foley completed a double as Citronnade beat Port Sunlight and Razdan by ¾l and 2¾l. In the finale race Patrick Mullins, still awaiting a win in the feature, won on his cousin’s, Emmet, trained horse Zero Ten from Ciel D’afrique and Anner Castle by 3¼l and 2¾l. The runner-up Ciel D’afrique was seeking a double for Weld and Maguire.

The second day of the festival was marred with a disqualification of a 3-Y-O who won a 2-Y-O race. The 2-Y-O fillies maiden was won by “Alizarine” trained by Jessica Harrington from Twinkle trained by Aidan O’Brien with Radiyka third. However, after racing and before the winner all right was announced the winner was microchipped and turned out to be a 3-Y-O Aurora Princess, and both were bay fillies with similar markings and human error had occurred. Are the stewards or Harrington wrong? This incident was flagged in England last tear when 2 of Aidan O’Brien’s horses were mistaken and should all runners be microchipped and identified before or as they enter the parade ring?

Elsewhere on the card, that man Dermot Weld was on the mark again as Emily Gray beat Prince Hector and Knights Of Malta in the opener. The winner won by 8½l and ¾l and was ridden by Colin Keane.

The fillies and mares listed race was won by 11/1 shot Galtee Mist ridden by Gary Carroll for Joe Murphy beating Lustown Baba and Royal Canford by 3½l and ½l.

The feature BMW Mile Handicap was won for the third year running an Ado McGuinness whose outsider in the race Sirjack Thomas finished 3l and ½l in front of Quizical and Mosala. McGuinness had won the race the previous two years with Saltonstall who

finished sixth. Chris Hayes combined with Shelia Lavery’s Moddle Poddle to win the fifth beating Baseman and Disco Boots by ¾l and 3½l.

Gary Carroll completed a riding double on Tom Gibney’s Imposing Supreme beating Emphatic and Petticoat Rule by 2¼l and 1¾l. Perfect Plum proved just that for Izzy Clifton as she booted him home to win by 2 ¾ l and a neck from Khafaaq and Dance Emperor.

Trained by Denis Hogan it was her first festival winner. In the final race No Thanks carried Declan McDonagh to victory over Crowns Major and Landa Beach by ½ l and a neck.

Day three opened with a first festival win for trainer Shane Crowley with Nodoubtaboutthat ridden by claimer T Joseph Kelly in the EBF handicap hurdle. He won from Dysart Diamond and Butterflyvespiere by 2¾l and 1¾l.

The Dysart is not the one in south Roscommon but outside Mullingar where the owner Eleanor Manning comes from.

There were seven runners in the second, a Listed Novice Hurdle, which was won by Annie G trained in Waterford

by Henry de Bromhead and ridden by Darragh O’Keeffe who finished 8l and 2½l clear of Surprise Package and Dark Voyager.

The 19-runner 2m 5f maiden hurdle was won by Gigginstown’s Desire Du Large trained by Patrick O’Brien who despite wandering won from the Sean Mulryan owned Martin Brassil trained Lonesome Boatman who hit the second last and David Christie trained Cream Sparkle. The winning distances were 2¾l and 2½l.

Galway Racing Festival Preview Tomorrow 12 go to post in the opening Novice 4-Y-O Hurdle and Emmet Mullins’ Carrarea looks the part. Second on his hurdle debut in Cork the dual bumper winner, including a Roscommon win, makes more appeal than and could beat Uncle Willie’s Tax For Max. In the second, 15 runners, Not So Simple could give local trainer Norman Lee a winner at his local track, one of the

few with chasing experience in the Beginners Chase. One to watch for here is Speak Easy who is stepping down in class. Only eight go in the Novice Chase and unbeaten in two runs over fences Bold Enough should make the journey from Waterford pay off for Henry de Bromhead.

There is a full field of 20 and three reserves in the Handicap Hurdle and it is hard to look beyond recent Roscommon winner Punters Poet. Royal Ascot 2nd M C Muldoon from the Closutton yard is hard to oppose in the Novice Hurdle but Banbridge, a winner in Roscommon, could give him a big race.

Ladies face the drop after Laois defeat TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Intermediate Football Championship Laois 3-8 Roscommon 1-7 < SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon’s interest in the knockout stages of this year’s Ladies Intermediate Football Championship came to a shuddering halt at a balmy Kinnegad last Sunday when Diane O’Hora’s side were outclassed by a slicker Laois outfit, who were clinical in the finishing department especially in the opening half.

Now Roscommon face a relegation play-off against Longford in a few weeks’ time as the nightmare scenario of demotion to the junior ranks comes into view.

Roscommon did tighten up considerably in defence in the second half and they never stopped trying, but the damage was already done in that opening 35 minutes.

In the first half an hour, Laois repeatedly drove down the centre of the Roscommon defence and it paid rich dividends with Mo Nerney, Fiona Dooley, Laura Nerney and Erone Fitzpatrick giving the Roscommon rearguard a torrid time.

At the other end of the field, Roscommon did have a fair amount of possession but more often than not there was a pass too many when a shot was on, and Laois were generally able to clear their lines.

In sweltering heat, the sides exchanged points in the opening five minutes through Alannah Havill and Aisling Hanly. Then after Havill had edged Lao-

In the 8th minute, Fiona Dooley cut through the Roscommon defence to crash home but just 90 seconds later Rachel Fitzmaurice scored a splendid goal for Roscommon to bring them back into the game. But it was only briefly, as in the 10th minute Laura Nerney ran 50 metres down the centre to blast the ball past Helena Cummins. Roscommon were in trouble in defence and especially when trying to keep tabs on Mo Nerney, who was superb in possession, but they were still in touch at half-time, trailing by 2-5 to 1-4.

Roscommon moved their best player, Roisin Wynne, on to the Laois dangerwoman Nerney and it worked really well as the Boyle woman totally blotted out her threat. But further up the field Roscommon simply could not engineer the goal chances they needed.

Indeed, the game could have been out of sight in the 35th minute when Sarah Ann Fitzgerald palmed the ball over the head of Helena Cummins, but, incredibly, Roisin Wynne swept the ball off the line for a ’45. Three minutes later, Erone Fitzpatrick was fouled but Mo Nerney’s penalty was well saved by Helena Cummins.

But the goal that Laois were threatening to score came in the 45th minute when Jane Moore, who had just returned to the field of play after a yellow card, blasted the ball to the Roscommon net and that was game, set and match. Roscommon added three points late on from subs Aoife Gavin and Sarah Scally (2) but it was too little, too late.

A very disappointed Roscommon team manager Diane O’Hora said afterwards that her team had put in a huge effort on the day.

ally and that was the difference. We rallied well and I was so proud of our girls. We suffered down the centre of our defence in the opening half and the injury to Megan Kelly was crucial. Roisin (Wynne) did well when she went back but we lost out on her attacking qualities then. It was a tough day for the girls.

Now we wait to see who we will play in the relegation play-off,” she said.

Roscommon’s best performers on the day were Roisin Wynne, Rachel Fitzmaurice, Aisling Hanly and sub Sarah Scally, but this was another below-par display from Roscommon, who have had a very disappointing season and now face a relegation play-off to ensure that they remain in the Intermediate grade.

Hand in ‘Team of the Year’ Roscommon’s Conor Hand has been named on the Electric Ireland Minor Football Team of the Year for 2020.

There are six players from the All-Ireland champions Derry and four from the finalists Kerry, Meath have two, and there is one each from Offaly and Monaghan.

Oran and Brigid’s in SFC opener The Hodson Bay Roscommon Senior Football Championship will begin on Friday, August 20th with Oran playing the champions St. Brigid’s.

Other first round games that weekend will see Strokestown face Clann na nGael, Pádraig Pearses against Western Gaels, Elphin playing Michael Glavey’s, and Roscommon Gaels against Boyle.

U-20s await Ulster champions The Ulster U-20 football final will take place this Friday night between Down and Monaghan. The winners will play Roscommon in the All-Ireland semi-final the following weekend. Cork play Offaly in the first U-20 semi-final this weekend

The recent Ladies’ competition was won by Olivia Costello, who shot a 69, while the Ladies’ 9-hole competition was won by Linda Maxwell with 18 points and Mary O’Gara topped the leaderboard in the Ladies Seniors’.

The Men’s Senior Cup team narrowly lost out to Co. Sligo on Sunday. Elsewhere, there were some notable performances from the Junior ranks.

Olivia Costello was unfortunate to be beaten on the 18th in the Leinster Ladies Championships semi-final but became 2021 Connacht Girls’ U-16 and U-14 champion at Castlerea.

Anna Higgins put in a remarkable performance in the Duggan Cup but was narrowly beaten on the 19th. Niamh and Leah Lennon also performed well in that competition.

Simon Walker, meanwhile, put in a terrific performance at the South of Ireland Amateur Open in Lahinch but was beaten on the 19th in the match play stages.

Back at the clubhouse, Orla Quinn hosted a successful ‘Beauty with a Purpose Challenge’ on Saturday last, raising muchneeded funds for Crumlin

Eugene Murphy’s team (109 points) took top spot ahead of Michael Forde and co. (104) while Paula Quinn hit the longest drive and Noreen O’Grady was nearest the pin.

T. Campion’s 34 points was enough to win the recent AWGS competition at Athlone.

Hard luck to Tom O’Connor in the South of Ireland Amateur Open.

His superb score of 63 on the opening day will long be remembered. His round consisted of eight birdies, an eagle and a bogie.

The McSharry’s Pharmacy Ladies’ competition was won by Maeve Holmes recently. Maeve’s 39 points was enough to see off Sylvia McInerney (37) in second place.

Roscommon handed Kildare a 28-point beating in this mismatch at Hawkfield last Saturday as Frank Browne’s team got back to competitive action after their disappointing league campaign.

Roscommon were in control right from the throw in. Leah Rowe scored Roscommon’s opening goal and with Niamh Coyle, Shauna Fallon, Rachel Fitzmaurice and Rowe herself in top form, the result was never in doubt. Roscommon led by 1-8 to 0-3 at half-time.

Browne’s charges increased their lead in the third quarter and Shauna Fallon scored Roscommon’s second goal in the fourth quarter from a ’45.

Roscommon next face Clare on Saturday at Dr. Hyde Park but this was a good win to get their championship campaign underway.

Kay O’Loughlin won the Ladies’ Hession Cup with 64 nett in Castlerea while Ruth Sullivan won last Thursday’s 9-hole competition with 42 points.

Myles Hawkshaw was the winner of the Men’s competition with 41.

Castlerea hosted the Connacht U-16 Girls’ Open this week. Roscommon’s Olivia Costello was crowned the 2021 Connacht U-14 and U-16 Girls’ Open champion. A fantastic achievement for the rising star!

Olivia complimented the fantastic condition of the course with a special shout-out to greens keeper, Ignatius. Congratulations Olivia!

Roscommon hurling received a timely boost at the weekend when the U-17 team won the ‘John Scott’ final of the 2021 Celtic Challenge, beating Tyrone in the final by 6-20 to 3-7.

It was a very impressive display by Michael Fallon’s team but it must be said that the game was very one-sided and Roscommon used almost two completely different teams in each half.

This success follows the Celtic Challenge win in 2019 so there is optimism that Roscommon can have a decent U-20 panel when 2022 comes around. It was a pity that this talented group was not competing at a higher level as they would have been well capable of competing honours.

Connacht 1,500m title for Hazel Congratulations to Hazel Kelly of Roscommon Athletics Club, who became the Connacht U-16 1,500m champion at AIT last weekend.

Hazel won an exciting and closely-contested race in high temperatures, running a personal best of 2:24:05 to win by seven hundredths of a second.

Hazel’s commitment to training during lockdown was justly rewarded at the finish line. Congratulations also to her family, especially dad Colm for guiding her through her many training sessions.

Minors blitz Mayo to seal semi-final spot Electric Ireland Connacht U-17 Football Championship QuarterFinal Roscommon 4-13 Mayo 2-12 < SEAMUS DUKE

For the second time in three days, a Roscommon side beat Mayo at underage level by seven points in the championship, and this time it was a superb team performance at Dr. Hyde Park on Friday night to advance to face Galway in the Connacht minor semi-final tomorrow night (Friday) in Tuam.

In sweltering conditions, the Roscommon attack was lethal in the opening half, converting no less than four goal chances.

However, in the second half, it was the Roscommon defence which came to the fore as Mayo came looking for the scores

they needed to rescue their situation, and the hosts’ rearguard stood firm with some outstanding play.

In the early stages, Mayo were slightly the better team and led by 0-4 to 0-2 after ten minutes, but in the 13th minute Ryan Conlon converted a penalty and Roscommon never looked back after that.

Roscommon’s second goal came from Shane McGinley in the 20th minute after a very slick attacking move and almost immediately Colm Neary crashed home Roscommon’s third goal.

There was some respite for Mayo in the 27th minute when Fiachra Cruise netted on the rebound after his penalty was well saved by Roscommon goalkeeper Sean Kelly. But the Rossies were rampant, and just a minute later Shane McGinley put Robert Heneghan through and he made no mistake to leave the half-time score Roscommon 4-6 Mayo 1-8.
