Back in business… peak festival season! < PAUL HEALY

After two years of rolling lockdowns and hardship on the health and economic front, the return of peak festival season is being welcomed by local communities.

The annual Castlerea Rose Festival formally began on Tuesday and continues until next Tuesday (with the Agricultural Show on Monday) while the famous Ballygar Carnival kicks off today (Thursday). The Carnival will run until the 2nd of August.

The returned festivals will not just lift morale in local communities but will also provide a welcome boost to hard-pressed businesses.

In Ballintubber, month-long Heritage events continue today and tomorrow, while the Brideswell Pattern Festival celebrations take place this Sunday.

The O’Carolan Harp Festival & Summer School began in Keadue on Monday and continues through to next Monday.

Meanwhile, with race-goers thronging to the Galway Festival this week, the action moves to Lenabane on Tuesday when the latest meeting of Roscommon Races promises to be a sporting and social occasion for all to enjoy.

My husband passed away recently. He made a will prior to his death and he left the farm to our son.

The farm was in his name, but we farmed it together all our married life. Our home was also in his name and he left me with just a life interest in my home and after my death it will also pass to our son. I am very disappointed, and I feel ill-treated.

I had assumed that he would leave all to me and I could then pass all to our son on my death. I am still quite young, and I am worried about having enough money to support myself going forward.

My relationship with my son can be strained at times. Is there anything I can do?

The law governing wills, namely the Succession Act, 1965, provides unique protection for spouses of the deceased in Ireland.

You refer to a will and I am assuming that your late husband’s will is valid. Please ensure that his will was made in a solicitor’s office and meet the requirements of a valid will.

By law, are entitled to at least one-third of your late husband’s estate if he died having made a valid will.

This one-third share is based on the fact that you had children together. If you had no children together then you would have been entitled to at least half of his husband’s estate. This entitlement is called a legal right share. The legal right share ranks in priority after the rights of creditors of the deceased and ahead of any other beneficiary.

You do not have to go to court to get your entitlement as the executor of his estate is obliged to grant this share to you where applicable. You should contact your Solicitor immediately to obtain legal advice as strict time limits apply in respect of claiming your inheritance share. The Castlerea Rose Festival is up and running and features a jam-packed programme of events. With musical performances, film screenings, fun runs, pony rides, and lots, lots more packed into the seven-day schedule of events, this year’s festival is bound to have something for everyone.

New approach needed says Naughten after AIB U-turn

Irish Water to start works at Cremully More than 1.5km of old pipes between Cremully and Aghagad in Roscommon will be replaced by Irish Water by the end of September, the company has said.

The works along the L7101 will, says Irish Water, not only reduce the number of supply interruptions, but will improve water quality and reduce the amount of drinking water lost by leakage.

Declan Cawley (Irish Water’s Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead) is looking forward to getting the project off the ground. Preparatory works will commence shortly

before removal of the old pipes begins in early August. Working with Roscommon County Council, we have prioritised leakage reduction in the areas that need it most”, he said.

“This project in Cremully will ensure that locals are not inconvenienced by regular bursts, and the works will safeguard the area’s water supply for the future”. In order to carry out these essential works, a road closure along the L7101 is necessary, and temporary diversions will be in place from early August until the end of September. However, local and emergency traffic will be facilitated at all times.

The pipe-laying may also result in short-term interruptions to the supply for local customers, but the project team says it will ensure a minimum of 48 hours’ notice is given of all planned outages.

“We are aware that works of this nature can cause some disruption. We would like to assure the public that together with Roscommon County Council and our contractor Farrans Construction, we are working to minimise any inconvenience. This project will be completed in advance of planned road overlay works for the area,” said Declan.

Roscommon-Galway TD Denis Naughten has called for an alternative approach to banking in the wake of last week’s controversy over AIB’s plans to remove cash services from 70 branches, including the one in Castlerea.

Speaking after the bank bowed to public pressure and abandoned its plan to go cashless, Deputy Naughten welcomed the U-turn but said such banking services are under threat unless an alternative approach is taken.

“It must be noted that the planned withdrawal of cash services to Castlerea, Ballinasloe and 68 other locations comes on top of the closure last year of Bank of Ireland branches in Elphin, Strokestown, Ballygar and Dunmore,” stated Denis Naughten.

“These actions by banks that the Irish people bailed out just over a decade ago clearly show they have no regard for the sacrifices that families across the country were forced to take to save them from collapse. It is now time for the Government to urgently revisit the establishment of a State bank for SMEs and personal customers”.

Denis Naughten pointed out: “We have two distinct customer bases that are being excluded by the current two-bank model in this country, namely personal customers and small businesses. Both elements need to be addressed in a new banking model”.

Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy also welcomed AIB’s u-turn and said he and many of his party colleagues had pushed for such a “change of strategy”.

Senator Murphy commented: “There was widespread concern and deep disappointment when AIB announced plans to stop providing cash at many local branches.

“Myself and many of my Fianna Fáil party colleagues immediately sought a change of strategy from AIB on this deeply unfair move.

“I am pleased to see that AIB have now decided to change strategy and I will work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that the voices of those most vulnerable are heard and that they get all the support they deserve and need”.

paul@roscommonpeople.ie and admire him…and, eventually, to like him too. News of his death this evening (after a short illness) at just 77 years of age comes as a shock.

A giant of Northern Irish politics, he played a major role in the transformation from conflict to peace.

One of the principal architects of the Good Friday Agreement, he made an outstanding, mature and courageous contribution to the process of building a future of peace and reconciliation on this island. May he rest in peace.

Thursday I very much enjoyed the Percy French Festival in Castlecoote (WednesdayFriday) where a number of leading intellectuals from different walks of life – artists too – entertained, challenged and informed around 100 attendees each day. It all happened in the beautiful grounds of Castlecoote House. You can read my views on the event on page 18.

Friday There’s been an outbreak of common sense, or more likely pragmatism – call it what you will – at AIB HQ. They’re not going cashless, not yet at least.

Predictably, there had been a very negative reaction to the bank’s arrogant announcement that 70 branches – including in Castlerea – would be going cashless within a matter of weeks.

The politicians might claim some credit for the U-turn, but it had more to do with the cross-community resistance, with farm organisations, the GAA, etc. all voicing their anger over the plans.

Of course the intervention of the Taoiseach was crucial too. Once he quite properly tut-tutted over the cashless plan, the writing was on the hole in the wall.

Saturday Of course AIB couldn’t have made its cashless move without adding in a bit of the humour which our banks excel at. You know the comedy routine by now, with its familiar punchline: ‘We’re going cashless/closing a branch/letting staff go because footfall is down’.

As jokes go, it’s not bad, if a little tired at this stage.

They omit to say that one of the reasons footfall is down is because banks are becoming increasingly impersonalised.

Yes, staff in our local branches are very friendly and efficient, but they are also almost an endangered species now that the big institutions are relentlessly driving customers online. Now I know that the digitalisation of banking is an irreversible trend, but it would be nice if banks were a bit more socially conscious!

Banks are all about business and finance, but they have also had a role as a kind of social hub. They ought to have a social conscience. Many customers, particularly elderly ones, would still like to engage in face to face contact with a cashier, not to mention meeting up with neighbours and friends.

This human interaction is still possible, but less so than in the

past. Local staff, people who know the local community, have always been integral to good banking ‘on the ground’ – but the powers-that-be seem indifferent to all that is being lost.

As I wrote here last year at the time of the Bank of Ireland branch closures, banks really ought to be places where commerce and community merge.

Of course people are embracing online banking, but one of the reasons this famous footfall – always used to justify cutbacks – has decreased, is because banks have led us to that point.

Sunday Today’s All-Ireland Football final was so engrossing, one is tempted to forgive the GAA for foisting it on us in July.

What in Sam’s name are we to

do in August, not to mention September itself? I digress.

It was a very enjoyable game, devoid of cynicism and negativity. To paraphrase Pat Spillane: pure football.

Mostly. It wasn’t perfect, but it was damn good. Refreshing and relentless, the odd lateral diversion aside. Shane Walsh really was the kid at the gable of the house, brimming with daydreams and joy, every enticing rebound an opportunity for another epic score of the imagination.

I first saw David Clifford in the 2017 All-Ireland minor final, when he scored 4-4, sufficient for me to form the view – there and then – that this, quite probably, was the greatest player of all time announcing his arrival. Destiny and genius merging, I watched…spellbound.

Last Sunday, nowadays a

young veteran, he claimed a bit more of the legend and greatness that is indisputably his. I say ‘was’ because, on googling Evans, I’ve discovered that he actually retired eight years ago, at the age of 50. He really was an amazing performer, as his shows – consistently repeated these days – testify. Absolutely brilliant.

Ballygar Carnival kicks off this evening Ballygar Carnival is back in full swing, having been run under limitations due to Covid over the past two years. With music events, visual arts performances, sporting events, kids’ entertainment and much, much more in store, there is sure to be something for everyone at the 78th Ballygar Carnival.

There will be top musical performances, nature walks, poetry events, history talks, visual arts performances, sporting tourna-

ments, and stage shows – to name but a few of the upcoming events.

This year’s carnival kicks off this evening, Thursday the 28th of July with a cooking demonstration by renowned chef Rachel Allen. Ollie Turner will be Master of Ceremonies for the evening and Rachel has a fantastic menu prepared.

The Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee and Minister of State Patrick O’Donovan both attended the official opening of the newlook Athlone Garda station on Monday.

Minister McEntee welcomed the fact that the Garda station has been renovated, saying: “I am delighted to be here on what is a great day for this community. In recent years Athlone has steadily become an urban hub for the Midlands and seen substantial population growth. Therefore, it is important that Gardaí stationed here have access to the resources and facilities required to police the expanding townlands and rural areas”.

She added that supporting the work of An Garda Síochána is a

priority for her Department and that this year’s “unprecedented budget” of “in excess of €2 billion reflects that commitment”.

The new station falls within the Athlone District which is comprised of Athlone Garda Station plus the sub-districts of Moate, Glasson, Kilbeggan and Ballymore.

The Athlone District is currently servicing a population of 26,100 residents with the heaviest concentration of the population in Athlone town itself.

Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Patrick O’Donovan also addressed those present.

He said: “I am very pleased that the completed project gives Athlone and the Midlands additional policing infrastructure to meet

present and future demands.

“The Office of Public Works worked very closely with An Garda Síochána in Athlone throughout the project to ensure that they could remain operational on the site during the construction work.

“The reopened station has not only increased substantially in size, it has also become more accessible to the public and the combination of new and old buildings enhances and supports ongoing urban renewal in Athlone”.

This newly-refurbished station, located in the centre of Athlone town, is also one of the first stations to use electric vehicles for policing with six electric vehicle-charging points.

New AED unit for Brusna Defibrillator Group Brusna Defibrillator Group recently celebrated the purchase of a replacement AED unit for their area. The unit was bought with the aid of a grant funded by Roscommon County Council Community Activities Fund.

Approval for €113m Fill Your hGarden upgrade of Athlone wit COLOUR Main Drainage Network The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD, has received Cabinet approval for the upgrade of the Athlone Main Drainage Network. Construction on the project, which has an estimated overall cost of €113.6 million, is due to begin by the end of the year and be completed by September 2025.

Commenting, Minister Darragh O’Brien said: “The upgrade to Athlone’s waste water collection system is pivotal for future growth and development in the area and for the successful delivery of housing.

“It is also a hugely important step in addressing non-compliance with the EU’s Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive in Athlone.

Athlone town is serviced by a Waste Water Treatment Plant which was recently upgraded

to accommodate Athlone’s waste water needs to at least 2050. However, the associated waste water collection system, comprising foul and combined sewers, pumping stations and storm water overflows, has insufficient capacity and is hydraulically overloaded in parts, resulting in frequent out-of-sewer flooding into the River Shannon.

“The project will cater for a growing population in Athlone and will facilitate economic development and importantly, safeguard the environment,” Minister O’Brien concluded.

The Athlone Main Drainage Scheme includes the construction of new pumping stations, installing more than 2.8km of sewer network and decommissioning under-performing pumping stations and pipework.

Glinsk Ladies Club honours Fiona Throughout the doom and the gloom of Covid, the lockdowns and episodes of flooding, constant rays of sunlight and good humour were provided by multi-talented musician Fiona Sirr, who posted daily sketches, music and song on her YouTube Channel.

These posts provided great entertainment and were extremely helpful during those stressful times.

At their recent Fair of Glinsk annual celebration the Ladies Club made a special presentation to Fiona to acknowledge her wonderful contribution.

Fiona has a special connection with Glinsk Ladies Club as her late grandmother Mary Frances Sirr, a former teacher in Toberroe N.S., was instrumental in setting up the club over 50 years ago and served as their first chairperson.

Boyle GAA Club, County winners in the recent Texaco Support for Sport initiative, has been presented with a cheque for €5,000 which will be used to develop its facilities including the construction of a wheelchair section for supporters to view matches and training sessions.

The Roscommon county award was presented to Tremane GAA Club last year. The initiative has proven to be a massive success.

Now in its second year, the Texaco Support for Sport initiative sees an annual fund of €130,000 set aside for

allocation in equal amounts of €5,000 to successful applicants chosen on a county-by-county basis.

Overseeing the adjudication process was Texaco Support for Sport ambassador, former Irish rugby international and broadcaster, Donncha O’Callaghan.

Entries to the Texaco Support for Sport 2023 initiative will open this autumn.

The winners of this year’s Energia Get Ireland Growing initiative with GIY were announced on July 22nd, and among the winners is Helen Murphy of Glenamaddy Community Garden, who has been dubbed 2022’s ‘Connaught Community Hero’.

As part of the Energia Get Ireland Growing initiative, members of the public were asked to nominate someone in their community who had gone above and beyond to support others to grow, with nominees being in with a chance of being named as their province’s ‘Energia Get Ireland Growing Community Hero’.

Six prize-winners have been identified as the national ‘Energia Get Ireland Growing Champions’ of 2022 – four ‘Community Hero’ winners and two awards for the best community transformation and most impressive community gathering respectively. Each of the winners have been awarded prizes and funding from Energia to enable them to continue and further develop each of their food-growing projects.

Helen Murphy was awarded the title of Connaught Community Hero on the back of the work she’s done with Glenamaddy Com-

munity Garden. This food-growing garden is aimed at bringing the people of the community together to encourage community sustainability. Diversity is also a focus point for the group and members of the community garden range from age 88 to playschool age, and the group also includes new members of the community from Ukraine.

After 21 people had to be assisted over a week-long period on Lough Ree recently, local RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager Kevin Ganly has asked people who are using amenities around Coosan Point to stay well away from the slipway and launch area for the charity’s lifeboat.

He said: “At busy times congestion in the area can hamper the launch of the lifeboat when it’s responding to an emergency call”.

Mr. Ganly issued the appeal after Lough Ree RNLI’s latest busy week. From Monday, July 11th to Monday, July 18th crew members dealt with six separate incidents which collectively required 21 people having to be rescued.

They were requested by the Coast Guard to go to the assistance of four people on board a stranded cruiser near Clonminch Island on the

lake. In a second incident, five people on a speedboat had to be rescued.

Meanwhile, at Coosan Point itself, they came to the aid of a member of the public who had been injured while jumping into the lake.

Lough Ree RNLI also responded to a call for assistance to five people on board a stranded cruiser on the Hexagon Shoal.

The cruiser was towed to safe water and headed north towards Lanesboro.

While returning from this call, the volunteer crew were diverted to another incident near Inchclearaun, where a 27 ft. cruiser with one person on board was stranded on the rocks.

A Lough Ree RNLI volunteer crew was also called to assist a 40 ft. cruiser with five people on board, which was stranded on rocks at Kids Island. There were no serious injuries in any of the incidents referred to.

Just the ticket: Despite Galway’s defeat, Croke Park experience was great Our man Frank on a memorable day cheering on a gallant Galway; Dismay over a bus service blow; Menacing monkeys on the rampage in Japan…

All week I reminded myself of an octopus; I had feelers out all over the place for tickets for the All-Ireland final, stretching all the way from Ireland to my friend Dermot over there in Spain.

But as the days went by it began to look more and more like I would be watching the big game from the comfort of my sitting room couch.

On the Wednesday, even though I was still ticketless, I decided that just in case any came up, I would book a few seats on the train from Longford to Connolly Station. However, the very helpful customer service person I spoke to told me there was no need to book…I was advised to just turn up on the day and hop on.

I said there was an All-Ireland final on, but the answer was still the same – turn up and hop on.

Anyway, Thursday came, and out here in Creggs we had the big draw for two stand tickets. When my tickets stayed firmly in the drum, I went to bed resigned to my fate and to the fact

that Croke Park would have to do without me.

Then, as I was about to drift off to sleep, I got the message from Creggs club secretary, Eugene Hanley, to tell me that I had a ticket for the Nally terrace. Remarkably, from then on, tickets seemed to materialise from everywhere. By Friday, it seemed that everyone that wanted tickets had got them. As I texted Dermot in Spain to tell him that I was sorted, I got a text from him to tell me he too had come up trumps (luckily enough, he was able to give them to – as he described them – a good Galway couple).

There were three from my house travelling – my sons, Paul and Mark, and I. We agreed we would meet in Longford on Sunday morning (two had to come from Galway) and take the 9.45 train to the city – the train we just had to hop on. Anyway, as luck would have it, I decided to ring Irish Rail again just to make sure.

Of course this time it was a different story. All trains from everywhere in the west (Longford is on the Sligo line) were booked out, and there were no seats available anywhere. Thank God I found out then, as it would have been very traumatic if we had arrived at the train station to discover we would not be let on.

And so, bright and early on Sunday morning,

we hit off by car for Croker. I have to say that while the way up was busy, it was not too bad, and we were outside Croke Park before two o’clock, mingling with what seemed like a sea of maroon and white.

The atmosphere was just fantastic. I ran into people from all over, the craic was great, and it was so good to be there. You could feel the excitement in the air, and even though the bookies had us as complete outsiders, you could just sense that the Galway supporters believed we could do it.

As events transpired, they were right – for nearly all the game it was nip and tuck, and although Kerry pulled away in the last few minutes, they were definitely helped by a couple of ridiculous refereeing decisions. Now I am not taking away from the kingdom – as they have a really good team – but to make two decisions in the last few minutes of an All-Ireland final that were, to say the least, contentious (the free against John Daly and the subsequent throw-in that led to another Kerry score) was amazing, and in my opinion definitely turned the game on its head.

Galway should be proud of their efforts, but the big challenge now is to keep improving and stay up there near the top of the football-

With the game over, we made our sad, weary way out to our daughter’s place for a bit of grub and a little rest before heading home some time after 7 pm. Thankfully it opened up a bit then, and I made my way into the house some time after 10 pm, tired but delighted that – despite the loss – I had been there to experience an atmosphere that was absolutely electric.

We were in Croke Park very early, and present for the jubilee ceremony for three All-Ireland winning teams from the past – the Dublin, Meath and Kerry teams of 1995, 1996 and 1997 respectively. It was a shame they were introduced when there was hardly anyone in the stadium – surely they could have brought them out at half-time in the big game, when the crowd could have really acknowledged some of the greatest players the game ever produced? That is a very minor gripe with what was a great day. While we didn’t win, we more than played our part.

Menacing monkeys One of the abiding memories I have of my short time spent in Hounslow in London was the number of foxes that used to roam the streets. We would often see them in gardens and even on low roofs as they foraged for scraps of discarded food. However, they were harmless enough and never made any aggressive moves towards the human population.

Over in the city of Yamaguchi in Japan however, the locals are not so lucky. A breed of monkeys, which are common enough in the city, have suddenly started to attack people. To date, a total of 42 have been attacked by the marauding monkeys. The attackers have entered buildings through windows and sliding doors and have scratched and bitten most of their victims.

Authorities are now using tranquilliser guns to try to stop the attacks, but so far they have failed to catch any of the perpetrators. In the meantime, people are advised to keep windows and doors tightly closed

in an effort to keep the monkeys at bay.

It all makes me realise that a few bluebottles and an odd fly are not too bad after all!

And finally…

As the Galway Races continue, I hear that half a million pints of Guinness will be downed in Galway this week, along with 12,000 Supermac’s snack boxes – a figure that I think may be quite a bit low.

Knowing how my own appetite for fast food increases the more Guinness I have, I would think 500,000 pints would equate to about 100,000 snack boxes. Sadly I won’t be there to sample either of those culinary delights, but best wishes to all of you who are!

Annual Keadue 5K walk/ run for cancer support The annual Keadue Tidy Towns 5K walk/run will be held on Friday, July 29th.

All proceeds raised will go towards the Multiple Myeloma Sligo Cancer support group that provides information and support for people with Multiple Myeloma and their families and friends.

Registration takes place from 7 pm in Keadue Hall. The walk/run starts at 7.30 pm. Refreshments will be served afterwards. All are welcome to participate so come along on the day to support this worthy cause!

Church Gate Collection for RSPCA The Roscommon Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) is holding its annual Church Gate Collection on Saturday and Sunday the 30th and 31st of July in Kilteevan. Your support, as always, is greatly appreciated.

Fuerty Cemetery Mass Mass will be celebrated in Fuerty Cemetery on Friday, July 29th, at 7 pm.

Families are invited to tidy up the graves of their loved ones and remove all old flowers, weeds and wreaths from the cemetery.

There will be a collection to assist ongoing repairs, enhancements and maintenance for the coming year.

Kilcroan Cemetery Mass Mass will be offered in Kilcroan Cemetery on Sunday, 7th of August, 2022 at 3 pm, weather permitting.

Knockcroghery group’s day out at Moynalty Threshing Festival Knockcroghery Social group are organising a day out to Moynalty Steam Threshing Festival on Sunday, August 14th. Coach will depart Knockcroghery Community Centre at 9 am, picking up at Hannon’s Hotel and Casey’s in Roscommon. Price includes return coach journey, brunch on route, admission ticket to the Threshing Festival, Vintage Museum, all entertainment on the field, and a meal in Mullingar on the way home.

This year, Moynalty hosts the 60th anniversary of the Mark 1 Cortina. There will also be music and dancing on the field featuring Matt Leavy, Nathan Carter and other artists.

People will be dropped off at the designated stops on the way home. We would be delighted if you could join us for a great day out.

Bank on it…a cashless society would reduce our civil rights The sheer brass neck displayed by the AIB in its attempt to make 70 of its branches cashless (including Castlerea) has laid bare the obvious disconnects which lie between them pursuing profits and servicing the needs of their customers.

I’m glad the backlash they received was so strong it made them do a U-turn quick enough to give them redout from the g-force! Good enough for them – I hope it was painful!

How could they be so callous, conceited and unthinkably inconsiderate of their customers – especially seniors and rural dwellers, many of whom would be forced to travel long distances to withdraw their money?

I don’t bank with AIB, or as I’m calling them, ‘The bank that’s willing to push their agenda and to hell with what’s in the best interest of the customer’. However, I am a customer of a bank which received €4.8 billion from the State – and when I say ‘State’, I mean taxpayers. To that end, I’m finding it nauseating that any financial institution that exists purely because of handouts delivered at our expense could be so arrogant that it believes it’s unaccountable for its actions.

But hey, I suppose it comes down to the underlying culture of banks, which is (given AIB’s audacious proposal) to foster a cashless society while having full control over customers’ financial lives – not to mention their economic hab-

its. I mean, what will they come up with next… force us to undergo retina scans when buying a loaf of bread?

I’m someone who likes to have the choice of using cash whenever I can. Nevertheless, with so many people not carrying as much as a two euro coin for the supermarket trolley in their pockets, I fear its demise is just around the corner. However, moving solely to debit cards, credit cards, and apps like Revolut, etc. would not just bring about adverse effects by placing many on the brink of financial exclusion, but as cash has always been an integral part of our lives, its expiration could literally cut off vulnerable groups from society.

I’m talking about some senior citizens here, the ones for whom abolishing notes and coins may prove to be a major impediment to their daily lives – even, in certain circumstances, removing their decision-making powers. This is something that as a society, we must not allow to happen.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m not suggesting that all seniors are incapable of managing their finances, and that a move to a demonetised way of living would leave everyone of pensionable age struggling. Indeed, the adoption of technologies in older age groups has grown markedly during the Covid lockdowns. What I am doing is hypothesising around the type of issues that could potentially manifest for those who don’t

use smartphones (or who can’t afford them) if these devices become the only way to carry out a transaction.

How do people do their weekly food shopping, pay their energy bills or even do a bit of buying and selling at the mart or the car boot sale? What happens to those for whom the closure of local branches, where banks have deserted their communities, leaves them with no choice but to stash their few bob in a hole in the mattress or inside a bag of frozen peas in the freezer? What happens to those born in the preinternet banking world who’re not yet ready, or more importantly, do not wish to live their daily lives without the comfort of having a physical purse or wallet full of notes and coins at their disposal?

I know that for many of us, using cards or phones has become a very convenient way of paying for ‘stuff’. Nonetheless, I must admit that every time I tap, I worry I’m placing myself at an increased risk of being mugged by an unscrupulous hacker. Remember last year’s cyber-attack? This practice provides the consumer with no anonymity whatsoever.

Speaking of no anonymity… in a cashless society, the bank will have details of every single item you own, because every transaction you make is recorded and traceable. But what happens when there’s a power cut? Didn’t the government warn us of possible winter outages due

The greatest Irishman, statesman, soldier, commanderin-chief, and revolutionary leader that ever lived (in my opinion) Michael Collins will be gone from this earth one hundred years next month.

Struck down in his prime on August 22nd 1922 by a coward whose name will never be revealed (unless An Taoiseach Micheál Martin agrees to hold a State enquiry, which is unlikely), General Collins will at last be honoured with a proper memorial at his death site at Béal na mBláth; and not before time!

This week, nearly one hundred years on, another great

statesman and former diehard Orangeman, Ulster Unionist hardliner David Trimble – a man who once menacingly manned the barricades at those threatening Orange marches at Drumcree – passed away. While I could never hold Trimble in the same esteem as I will forever hold Collins (I’m kind of obsessed with the Big Fella), I have to comment that although they were polar opposites politically, he, like Mick, made his mark and left this world with his own special legacy – that of peacemaker!

May both men, whose ideals and principles would at one time have made them bitter enemies, now rest in peace.

Be afraid folks, be very afraid, because a nation which is forced by any financial institution or government to live within a dystopian economy where the State has full control of the people’s earnings is a nation robbed of its civil rights.

Would Dishi Rishi be more sympathetic to Ireland’s plight?

The race to lead the British Conservative party is well and truly on, as party members across the UK cast their votes to decide whether it’ll be Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak who gets to replace disgraced former PM Boris Johnson.

While we won’t get to know the result until September 5th, I have to say that the situation presents our own little nation with a ‘Hobson’s choice’ scenario, in so much as neither Truss nor Sunak is particularly sympathetic towards us, placing Ireland in what I call a serious ‘situation-ship’!

Take Liz – Maggie Thatcher’s, remainer-turned-Brexiteer, bookies’ favourite. Given her total disregard for the Northern Ireland Protocol and her threats to rip up part of it, etc., it’s fair to assume that the future’s not looking bright for those of us living on this little island!

While I’m normally all for girl

power, in this instance, I’m hoping this particular girl doesn’t succeed.

You see readers, I draw the line at stupidity, and given that Truss believes that placing trade barriers between the Brits and the EU (i.e. us) will somehow result in making them richer (a daft assumption), her succession to the role of leader mustn’t happen.

I’d also never, ever, support anyone who, while suffering from a severe case of ‘cakeism’, allegedly said those Brexit-imposed barriers (which she now opportunistically buys into) wouldn’t have any serious impact on us here in Ireland – that is, other than affecting ‘a few farmers with turnips in the back of their trucks’. How ignorant!

Methinks we’ll probably be ever so slightly better off dealing with straight-from-puberty-to-mediocrity Dishi Rishi.

No strangers in the house as Solstice Choir Concert raises over €4000 for Ukrainian cause The highly anticipated Solstice Choir concert in aid of the Ukrainian Red Cross took place in the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon before a large crowd on Friday night last.

Amongst the audience were a number of the Ukrainian refugees who are now housed in the Cuisle Centre in Donamon.

Senator Eugene Murphy acted as MC for the night and welcomed everybody to the concert which was aptly titled ‘There are no strangers in this house’.

He welcomed in particular the members of the Ukrainian community noting that they were the victims of “brutal aggression”.

During the earlier part of the show

the audience were treated to a wide range of musical delights ranging from Elton John’s ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ to Elvis Presley’s ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’.

Fr. Kevin Fallon, Parish Priest in Roscommon and a noted musician, entertained the crowd with a rousing selection of jigs and reels on the flute and a lovely rendition of his latest record ‘Sweet Philomena’ which is dedicated to his mother and which he wrote himself.

A highlight of the concert then followed with the participation of a number of Ukrainian artists. Krystyna, Rima, Ilbina and Ekele sang a number of songs which highlighted the rich

musical diversity of the area and were presented in national costume which were warmly received by the audience.

Following that, there was a performance by Eimear Reynolds, who, along with her brother Andrew, are the musical directors of the choir.

Eimear is very highly regarded and this was borne out by her amazing performance. Eimear has recorded and performed all over Ireland as well as in Europe and the US. The Solstice Choir were fortunate to have the legendary musician and ‘Man with the golden trumpet’ Johnny Carroll on the bill. His performance of ‘Amazing Grace’ – accompanied by the choir – was outstanding. He com-

pleted his musical extravaganza with a moving rendition of ‘You’ll never walk alone’ which, with the audience taking part, reverberated throughout every corner of the Church, demonstrating to our friends from Ukraine that we support them every step of the way.

The show concluded with everyone on the altar singing the Scott McMahon song ‘Happy Are We All Together’ led by choir member Frank Brennan.

James Hoban, the Chairperson of the Solstice Choir, thanked all those involved. He noted that the concert was the Solstice Choir saying thanks to the people “for being so giving and supportive to each other during lockdown and the pandemic crisis”. He added that

people were “generous in time, money and help to the Ukrainian people”. He paid particular tribute to the volunteers and staff of the Cuisle centre in Donamon who had done everything in their power to make people feel welcome and give them a home away from home.

The concert was free but donations on the night went to the Ukrainian Red Cross. This appeal raised a fantastic €4,012.25 on the night.

Poetry In The Park at The Demesne, Castlerea Poetry in the Park is an opportunity for poets and lovers of poetry to meet, share their favourite poems and socialise once a month from April to September 2022.

‘Poetry in the Park’ will take place this Saturday, 30th of July at The Demesne, Castlerea. People will meet at the Miniature Cottage in the Demesne at 2 pm. There will be a short walk, with stops along the way for the reading of poems. Immediately after the walk (which will take about an hour), the group will return to the cottage for refreshments, some more poetry readings, and plenty of chat.

You can bring along a poem that you have written, or a poem that you love, or you can come along with no poems in tow and simply enjoy the walk, the poems, and the chat. Nature poems are particularly welcome, but if your favourite poem is about a grandfather clock, or a mother’s love, or about anything at all, really that’s fine, as long as it’s suitable for sharing among young and old!

There is no charge for these events and no requirement to book. Plans for monument to honour Jimmy Murray confirmed < SEAMUS DUKE

The village of Knockcroghery will soon have a fitting memorial to honour its most famous son when a monument of the late Jimmy Murray, captain of the Roscommon senior All-Ireland winning teams of 1943 and 1944, is unveiled. The project was formally launched in Murray’s Bar in Knockcroghery last Friday night.

A large crowd gathered on the night and among the attendance were members of the organising committee, members of the St Dominic’s GAA Club, Roscommon GAA County Board officials, local politicians, community leaders, and local sculptor Mark Feeley, who will create the memorial.

Chairperson of the committee, Thomas Murray, welcomed everyone to the event. He thanked Mark Feeley for taking on the project and said it was great that there was a local man available to do the job. “I have no doubt that – seeing the work Mark has done to date – this will one of his finest pieces”.

Mr. Murray confirmed that the stone for the project will come from the local Lecarrow Quarry. He said it was entirely fitting that such a memorial should be erected in the village.

“Jimmy Murray or ‘Jamesie’ as we all called him, was born here, lived all his life here, and died here too. He brought great honour and fame to Knockcroghery and was known all over the country and far beyond”.

Mr. Murray of course had the distinction of captaining Roscommon to the county’s two senior All-Ireland wins.

The chairperson of the organising committee said that the idea of erecting a monument to the famous Roscommon man had been discussed many times since Jamesie died in 2007. He and Tommy Fallon arranged a meeting with the Murray family and had received one hundred per cent support from them.

Mr. Murray thanked all who have supported the project to date, including the local Tidy Towns Group and Project Knockcroghery, as well as councillors Laurence Fallon and Donal Kilduff.

Committee Treasurer Cormac McNally said that there would be a significant cost to the project, probably in the

Jimmy Murray was a loyal servant to Roscommon GAA. He first wore the Roscommon jersey as a minor in 1934 and played with the county until he retired from inter-county football in 1948. His first All-Ireland title came in 1940 when Roscommon won the All-Ireland junior final. He captained Roscommon in five senior All-Ireland finals, including replays in 1943 and in 1946. In recognition of his skills and long-running contribution to the sport, Jimmy was awarded the 1993 All-Time All-Star Award as no GAA All-Star Awards were issued at the time of his playing career.

Jimmy had great success as a club footballer. His 25-year club career began in 1933 at age 16, playing for Knockcroghery junior team which later formed St Patrick’s. With St. Patrick’s, Jimmy won two junior county titles and played in ten senior county finals from 1941 to 1951, winning six of them. He continued playing with St. Patrick’s until he retired from football in 1958 aged 41. In hurling, Jimmy won a senior county championship with Roscommon Gaels and two junior county medals with St Patrick’s. He also played on the Roscommon hurling team.

Behind the scenes he held the role of secretary in St. Patrick’s for many years as well as being an officer on the Mid-Roscommon Board. Jimmy served on Central Council for 22 years and was President of Roscommon County Board for 15 years. He also served his time as a referee and later trained teams within his club and county.

region of €70,000. An iDonate account has been set up, as has one in Roscommon Credit Union (to which donations are welcome). He noted that Eddie Miley is organising a Golf Classic, and that Lecarrow Vintage Club are also hosting a fundraiser.

Roscommon County GAA Board Chairperson Brian Carroll said that it was a great honour for him to be associated with the launch.

“It is only right that we should honour one of the most famous Roscommon people that we have ever had. He was a man who will be remembered for generations and is known and respected throughout the country”.

Complimenting the organising committee and its chairperson Thomas Murray, Mr. Carroll said the whole

county needs to get behind this project and he would be urging every GAA club to do so.

President of St Dominic’s GAA Club and committee member Tommy Fallon said that the club and the local people were a long time waiting for this project to happen.

“We spent years talking about it but thankfully now it is becoming a reality.

Jamesie Murray brought fame and honour to Knockcroghery, St Patrick’s, St Dominic’s, and to Roscommon. I don’t remember seeing him playing (at his peak), but at the end of his career I remember that in the very last club game he played, he came off and I went on as a sub – and that’s my claim to fame!”

Speaking on behalf of the Murray family, John Murray thanked the commit-

tee for all their hard work so far. “I want to thank the club and the county board for their support. The family have been very happy to support the project. My father would have been very proud if he was here today”.

Sculptor Mark Feely said he was honoured to have been asked to take on the project. He agreed with a previous speaker that the Lecarrow quarry stone is the “finest quality stone in the country”.

“I want to do justice to this important project. I have a vision for what I want to create. Jimmy Murray was a man of action so I want to show him running and catching the ball. People will just have to be patient but I can assure everyone here tonight that I will give this my absolute best” he concluded.

Local councillors who attended the launch of the Jimmy Murray Memorial project added their support when speaking on Friday night.

Cllr. Laurence Fallon said that Jimmy Murray was a family man and a Knockcroghery man who had never allowed his fame to go to his head.

“It is fantastic to see that this memorial will be unveiled in 2023 which will be the 80th anniversary of Roscommon winning the AllIreland in 1943.

“There are very few funds at council level that councillors have access to but I am delighted that we were able to secure a grant of €15,000 from the municipal fund to support this project. I wish it was more, but I thank the council for that. This will be a focal point in the village and I look forward to it being unveiled” he said.

Councillor Donal Kilduff said that it was a fantastic idea to celebrate Jimmy Murray in the village.

“I want to pay tribute to Mark Feeley here tonight. His work is exceptional and I know he will produce something special here.

“I am predicting that he will produce his greatest creation when this project is completed and I am delighted that we have been able to support it”.

Okay, so we know the robots are going to take our jobs…but will they actually sneer at us while they’re at it, engage in a bit of banter, maybe even give the occasional metaphorical two fingers (while pouring themselves a beer)?

It’s not every Friday afternoon I find myself party to a conversation about whether or not robots/so-called artificial intelligence will be able to think for themselves…have actual emotions… in the future, but that’s what makes the Percy French Festival such a delight. It can get you to that place. (This year’s intriguing theme: ‘Does the soul have a future?’).

The 2022 version, held over three days in the beautiful grounds of Castlecoote House, was a resounding success, with superb guest speakers discussing a range of fascinating social and cultural issues, all against the backdrop of celebrating the multi-talented Percy French (and his legacy).

Transhumanism was a dominant theme of the conference, the question (more or less) being: Is it an unstoppable force which should be embraced and celebrated, or a movement that frankly should strike terror into humanity? We didn’t get definitive answers in Castlecoote, but we got some great insights and lively debate.

At this point, let me offer an assurance that if you’re wondering what transhumanism is, you’re in a majority.

Many – or most – readers are probably scratching their heads on this one!

Transhumanism is defined as a social and philosophical movement which is devoted to promoting the research and development of robust humanenhancement technologies. And that’s fine. But is there a sinister side to it?

One of this year’s guest speakers, Paul Kingsnorth, delivered a riveting lecture on transhumanism and transcendence on Thursday, painting a picture of a world straight from a science fiction movie, one that moves from people implanting microchips into their bodies (as a form of ‘upgrading’ their physical selves) to a mooted future in which humans will merge with machines and augment their bodies and minds to such a degree that (transhumanists argue) there will be no death, no ageing, etc. (And lots more besides; you may want to look it up online!). In his address, Kingsnorth speculated about the eventual “abolition” of nature and the “replacement of man”, about countries being run by computers, as opposed to governments. It’s a future which the fascinating Kingsnorth (an English writer now living in the west of Ireland) is profoundly opposed to.

theme of the festival, but it was a recurring one. A number of other subjects – including the media – were discussed by an array of excellent speakers.

Each daily session attracted up to 100 people to Castlecoote. Unforgivably, I hadn’t been to the annual festival for many years. Returning to it was eyeopening. I had been asked by organiser Kevin Finnerty to act as master of ceremonies. In at the deep end on Thursday and Friday (I couldn’t make it on Wednesday due to those merciless

newspaper deadlines), I very much enjoyed introducing and listening to the various speakers, and also chairing Friday’s ‘summing up’ session.

Thursday’s speakers were every bit as challenging, informative and entertaining as Friday’s, and I gather that day one (Wednesday) was a terrific start to the festival. Amongst the speakers over the course of the festival were Professor Gerard Casey, Larissa Nolan, Sarah Carey, Michael Hardiman and Martin D Henry.

Meanwhile, acclaimed poet John F Deane captivated the audience on Friday when reciting a number of poems (his own, and some other favourites of his) during an evocative and moving contribution.

The festival also featured some excellent musical entertainment. On Wednesday, this was provided by Eileen Coyle and Frasier Hickland, while there was a rousing set on Thursday from ‘The Unwanted’, featuring Scramogue native Cathy Jordan.

Then on Friday afternoon the festival concluded with a joyous concert by Col Ceathair, a group of young musicians who delighted the audience with a wonderful rendition of Percy French ballads along with songs from famous musicals. A standing ovation was fittingly the response to this great finale from Kevin Finnerty Junior (11) (who sang a beautiful version of Bring Him Home) and his cousins, the very talented Maria Henderson (13), Cecilia Henderson (11) and Isabella Henderson (7).

This was an excellent festival, and a great success. A platform for informed social and cultural discussion on the Ireland of today, the Percy French Festival is informative, enlightening, challenging and entertaining. It also celebrates the life and times of the great man himself, Percy French (18541920) of Cloonyquin. The event also provides an economic boost to the area and showcases Castlecoote House, the village and our county.

I liked what another excellent contributor, Máirín MacCarron, said when asked for a definition of the soul: “Whatever the definition of the soul is, it surely has to have joy in it”.

As to the question at the heart of this year’s festival – ‘Does the soul have a future?’ – I’m not sure we got a definitive answer. Maybe the robots could have a think about that one?

Apathy over the climate crisis will only allow things to worsen Let’s talk about ...

ATTITUDES TOWARDS CLIMATE CHANGE (A student’s perspective)

Alannah Ita Healy As the phrase goes, last week ‘bhí an ghrian ag scoilteadh na gcloch’. Temperatures the country over were a far cry from what we would expect of Irish weather (we’ve promptly returned to our normal schedule of rain and overcast now, don’t worry), with Phoenix Park even reaching a record-breaking 33°C on the Monday, the highest recorded temperature in Ireland in the past 135 years.

Naturally enough, we all made the most of the sunsplitting sunshine – flocking to the beach, having a barbeque, etc. And apart from a little post-beach-day litter (for example, the removal of more than 10 tonnes of rubbish from a single Dublin beach), Ireland’s week of sun went off without a hitch.

Unfortunately however, in the case of some of our neighbouring countries, the environmental impact of the recent heatwave far exceeded beach litter. Last week saw a slew of wildfires and house fires hit Europe as a result of the heat, causing extensive environmental and industrial

damage. Frontline firefighters in the UK spoke about not being prepared to deal with the fires, with the London Fire Department logging its busiest day since WWII. Evidently, the UK, like many other countries, are simply not equipped with the infrastructure to withstand these more extreme weather events – because until recently, extreme weather events weren’t happening this frequently.

Of course, the disastrous consequences of the recent heatwave haven’t come completely out of left field. We are all well versed enough in knowledge from the climate crisis to know the effects extremely high temperatures can have, just as we know why we’re getting hotter, hotter summers each year. But who wants to hear from the spoilsport who cries ‘climate change’ the instant there’s a bit of sun to enjoy?

Before the heatwave reached its peak in the UK, meteorologist John Hammond appeared on GB News on July 14th, warning that temperatures were trending

dangerously high, dubbing the forthcoming heatwave as “potentially lethal weather”. He said he expected it would result in “hundreds, if not thousands, of excess deaths”. However, his stark warning was not met incredibly seriously by one of the programme’s presenters, who responded, “I want us to be happy about the weather.

I don’t know whether something’s happened to meteorologists to make you all a little fatalistic and harbingers of doom”.

Given the fall-out that occurred as a result of the extreme heat Hammond forecast in his appearance on the show, the dismissal of his warning feels to be in incredibly poor taste.

But in reality, the response he got was not entirely unlike the response that the environmentalism movement has received for years.

We all understand the reality that is climate change, and consequentially, the necessity for action – but we are quite bored of having the conversation about it. ‘Taking care of the planet’ has been a talking point for decades at this point, but a lot of the time it feels like nothing is changing. We haven’t seen the progress that we’ve been told we need to make in order to keep the crisis at bay, and it’s made us apathetic to the entire crisis itself.

Obviously it’s been an unprecedentedly draining couple of years for everyone. People tend to feel more apathetic about the news in general nowadays, and

it’s no wonder given the endless stream of depressing news stories that are constantly at our fingertips, especially so in the past few years. To add, it is disillusioning as an average person to think about the climate crisis when you know that the biggest contributors to it are outside of your control.

But either way, the problem isn’t going away.

Understandably, climate action got put on the long finger when the pandemic rolled

around and nabbed the title of ‘Biggest Global Emergency’.

However, as we’ve begun to move away from the pandemic, we’ve yet to see the climate crisis approached with the urgency it requires. It may have been undeniable that urgent action was needed when we first learned how Covid could impact health, but we really cannot afford to keep waiting for disastrous environmental events to happen before we begin tackling the climate cri-

sis with that same urgency.

We have seen how other countries are not equipped to deal with the weather events that are currently happening, and we know that these weather events are only going to get more extreme in the near future. Neglecting our responsibility to tackle the roots of the climate crisis will prove nothing short of disastrous – regardless of how much we want “to be happy about the weather”.

Rathcroghan included on new World Heritage Tentative List for Ireland

The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien, TD, and Minister of State with Responsibility for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan TD have announced that the complex of archaeological sites in Rathcroghan near Tulsk, Co. Roscommon is part of the Royal Sites of Ireland application which has been successfully included on a new Tentative List for Ireland.

The Tentative List is an inventory of natural and cultural heritage sites that may have potential to demonstrate Outstanding Universal Value and therefore considered suitable for nomination to the World Heritage List.

It is a pre-condition for nomination that a site must be on the Tentative List for at least one year before work can formally begin on a nomination dossier. It is important to note that the nomination process does not necessarily result in the inscription of a site on the World Heritage List.

A site can be inscribed on the World Heritage List only if the World Heritage Committee determines it is of Outstanding Universal Value for all of humanity.

From the eighth century BC, Navan Fort, Dún Ailinne, the Rock of Cashel, Rathcroghan, have been the traditional royal centres of the North, East, South and West provinces, together with Tara, the seat of the High

Kings, and the Hill of Uisneach, the symbolic central point of Ireland, forming a globally unique group of archaeological ceremonial complexes. They demonstrate in physical form the development of power, ceremony and religion in a Celtic society minimally influenced by the Romans.

In line with UNESCO guidance, in January 2019 the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage sought applications to a new Tentative List for Ireland, to replace the current list dating to 2010.

All Local Authorities were requested to make applications to the Department with respect to any sites within their jurisdiction.

Brideswell Pattern Festival takes place this Sunday The Brideswell Pattern Festival takes place this coming weekend. This annual celebration is aimed at promoting a social atmosphere in the parish through heritage, arts and crafts, sport and family activities.

As part of Brideswell Pattern Festival, Pattern Sunday, July 31st, will see a host of different events taking place. The day will begin with a Pattern Mass, which will take place in Brideswell at 12.30 pm, concelebrated by Bishop Kevin Doran. This will be followed immediately by a family fun day in the village.

Kicking off at 1.30 pm, the fun day will include a host of free kids’ entertainment. Tea/coffee and cakes will be served in the marquee, with a bake

sale also taking place in aid of Brideswell NS. The fun day will also include a kids’ tractor run at 2.30 pm. Have your child bring along their tractor, car, scooter, bicycle, etc. on the day and join in the fun.

The kids’ tractor run will be followed by the Parish Fittest Families competition, which will start at 3.30 pm. There will also be a chance to win a big cash prize on the Mega Wheel of Fortune. A top prize of €1500 is up for grabs, with lines available to purchase for €20 each.

Sinn Féin highlights need to address energy costs This week, Sinn Féin published the Energy Poverty Strategy Bill 2022 to try and ensure that the government takes urgent steps to help people hit by high energy costs.

The legislation would commit the government to establishing an Energy Poverty Advisory Group and delivering an Energy Poverty Strategy to ensure that people struggling with expensive electricity and heating bills get much-needed help to ensure they can afford these costs.

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Social Protection, Claire Kerrane TD, said: “Across

the country, people are deeply anxious about paying their heating and electricity bills.

Bills were sky-high last year and many families struggled to keep on top of them. They are set to rise even higher this autumn and winter. Simply put, many people’s finances won’t stretch far enough.

“The government has to act and ensure it takes crucial steps to deliver much-needed support for people struggling with high energy costs. This Bill would be an important first step in forcing the government to acknowledge and begin to address the problem”, she concluded.

Sunday, 31 July Trust in God – as the Rock of our salvation, as the Lord who made us His chosen people, as our shepherd and guide. This should be the mark of our following of Jesus.

Like the Israelites we recall in this week’s Psalm Response, we have made an exodus, passing through the waters of Baptism, freeing us from our bondage to sin. We too are on a pilgrimage to a promised homeland, the Lord in our midst, feeding us heavenly bread, giving us living waters to drink (see 1 Corinthians 10:1-4).

We must take care to guard against the folly that befell the Israelites that led them to quarrel and test God’s goodness at Meribah and Massah.

We can harden our hearts in ways more subtle but no less ruinous. We can put our trust in possessions, squabble over earthly inheritances, kid ourselves that what we have we deserve, store up treasures and think they’ll afford us security and rest.

All this is “vanity of vanities,” a false and deadly way of living, as this week’s first Reading tells us.

This is the greed that Jesus warns against in this week’s Gospel. The rich man’s anxiety and toil expose his lack of faith in God’s care and provision. That’s why Paul calls greed “idolatry” in the Epistle this week.

Mistaking having for being, possession for existence, we forget that God is the giver of all that we have, we exalt the things we can make or buy over our Maker (see Romans 1:25).

Jesus calls the rich man a “fool” – a word used in the Old Testament for someone who rebels against God or has forgotten Him (see Psalm 14:1).

We should treasure most the new life we have been given in Christ and seek what is above, the promised inheritance of heaven. We have to see all things in the light of eternity, mindful that He who gives us the breath of life could at any moment – this night even – demand it back from us.

Responding to the ECB interest rate increase of 0.5%, Brokers Ireland said the increase “marks the beginning of a new era, and predicting where the rate will end up with any degree of accuracy is like fortune telling”.

Rachel McGovern – Director of Financial Services at the organisation, which represents 1,225 broker firms – said: “Ten years ago, hardly anyone believed or foresaw that the ECB interest rate would drop to zero as it did in 2016, or that it would maintain at this level until now.

“We are not in the business of fortune telling, and mortgage holders and aspiring mortgage holders have to live their lives and make decisions now in this increasingly uncertain world.

Therefore, our advice to mortgage holders who have not reviewed their situation is do so immediately and take professional advice. There are still very good long-term fixed interest rates in

the market, which mean that people can plan their financial affairs knowing what their financial outlay will be over the longer-term, for periods up to thirty years”.

She said as the months go by, these rates, which have been reducing in recent years, are likely to increase. While this would not impact on people who “have already fixed”, it would impact new mortgage holders”.

Ms. McGovern added that an unfortunate aspect of increasing interest rates is that it will impact aspiring home buyers, especially those on average incomes, who will now have to plan for increased repayments and the likely higher stress testing by lenders.

She said the ECB rate increase will mean an automatic increase for anyone on a tracker mortgage.

Although no tracker mortgages have been issued since 2008, over 200,000 people will see the 0.5% increase applied to their monthly repayment.

15k homes and businesses now connected to NBI network National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the new high-speed fibre broadband network under the Government’s National Broadband Plan (NBP), has announced that it has reached over 15,000 connections to its network.

Minister Ossian Smyth (Minister of State with responsibility for Communications), Peter Hendrick (CEO of NBI) and Fergal Kearney (CEO of Aptus, a Carlow-based retail broadband provider) marked the milestone with John and Marian Monahan, a local farm family who recently connected to the network.

A total of 15,484 premises – including homes, schools, businesses and community facilities – are now connected to NBI’s network, meaning that these premises now have guaranteed access to minimum broadband speeds of 500Mb. A further 70,716 premises are now in a position to place an order or pre-order for service with

one of the providers that are registered on the NBI network; NBI projects that this figure will increase to 128,000 premises by the end of 2022.

NBI’s most recent progress update shows strong momentum in the roll-out across all 26 counties, with take-up rates of over 30% already in Deployment Areas which have been live for a period of six months or more.

Minister Ossian Smyth said: “The National Broadband Plan represents an investment of up to €2.7 billion in rural Ireland. The plan is to address regional imbalances and ensure equal opportunities for all communities across Ireland.

The 15,000th connection marks a major milestone in the roll-out of the National Broadband Plan and I’m delighted that so many homes and businesses have been connected and can now receive access to world-leading fibre network”.

Skillnet Ireland announces €1m fund to establish new business networks

This week, Skillnet Ireland launched a call for applications to set up new Skillnet Business Networks, which are aimed at meeting key business challenges through talent development and developing a highly skilled workforce.

With funding of up to €1 million available, Skillnet Ireland is seeking applications from interested industry bodies

or business groups to complement the work already being carried out across its seventy-two Skillnet Business Networks nationwide. Industry bodies such as Chambers Ireland, IBEC, ISME, Irish Centre for Business Excellence and the Irish Farmers Association are currently engaged with Skillnet Ireland and see the benefits this brings.

Skillnet Ireland are seeking applications that align Skillnet Ireland strategy designed to future-proof businesses of all sizes through talent development in areas including digital transformation, climate action and business sustainability, leadership development and workforce innovation. New network applicants receive one-to-one support

and consultation throughout the process, including virtual information sessions and workshops before the closing date for funding applications on October 14th.

Last year, Skillnet Ireland supported a record number of businesses (22,500) engaging in talent development through Skillnet Ireland, with the majority of

them being SMEs (93%). In 2021, the number of people participating on upskilling programmes through Skillnet Ireland grew to 86,500 with a record level of investment of €60 million in talent development from both Skillnet Ireland and private sector companies.

32-county run for Motor Neurone Disease to pass through Roscommon Following the death of his father John in January 2010 after a brave fight against Motor Neurone Disease, Jerry Twomey, (pictured right) has challenged himself to complete a series of 10km runs to mark his late father’s birthday, while also raising awareness and funds for others affected by the disease.

During the month of July 2022, Jerry set out to complete a 10km run in all 32 counties in Ireland, with the 10km run in Roscommon taking place on Saturday, July 30th. The purpose of Jerry’s run is not just to honour his Dad, but more importantly, to raise awareness and much-needed funds for those suffering from Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

MND is a progressive neurological condition that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and

spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching the muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting.

The charity Jerry is raising money for is the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA), whose aims include funding research and providing specialised services for people affected by this debilitating disease, such as equipment on loan, financial assistance towards home help, advice and home visits by a MND Nurse Specialist. In order to provide these vital services, the IMNDA depends heavily on the generosity of the public and friends of the association, as well as fundraising efforts such as this one.

“We met angels and helpers in many forms while Dad suffered his illness with dignity”, said Jerry. “The IMNDA was of immeasur-

able support to us and are an endlessly worthy charity to go the distance for.

“I have been training hard since January, and at times, I felt that completing this challenge was way beyond me. But what better way to honour the memory of my brilliant Dad than to face a challenge bigger than I feel possible. I also wanted to do something in every county in Ireland in order to show support to everyone across the country who is, or has been, affected by this devastating disease”.

Roscommon public invited to take part in Alzheimer’s Memory Walk Comedian Neil Delamere and beauty expert and entrepreneur Pamela Laird are inviting the people of Roscommon to make every step count for the third successive Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, proudly supported by Irish Life, which is taking place nationwide on Sunday, September 18th, during World Alzheimer’s Month 2022.

Alzheimer’s Memory Walk is a familyfriendly event suitable for all ages and abilities to unite together with their families and communities to raise awareness and funds for dementia supports. The ASI hopes that 3,000 walkers across Ireland will help raise €250,000 for vital services that help to support so many people with dementia and their family carers across Ireland.

An estimated 1,108 people live with dementia in Roscommon, and 64,000 people live with Dementia in Ireland, a figure which will more than double in the next 25 years to over 150,000 (by 2045).

A mother and son who both study at Atlantic Technological University recently set sail aboard the ‘Tenacious Forward Port Watch Tall Ship’ to raise awareness for spinal cord injury. The ship sailed from Poole in England to Dublin in aid of Spinal Injuries Ireland, travelling along with a crew comprising eight people with a spinal cord injury, their assistants, and people from all backgrounds and abilities.

Mother and son Victoria and Luca Matthews are both students with ATU. Victoria is an accessibility activist from Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal, who’s studying sport with business at ATU Sligo. Her son Luca is pursuing a BA in Culinary Arts at ATU’s Killybegs campus.

The crew left Poole’s port town on the South Coast of England in June. It veered south towards Jersey and the North coast of France to sail into Dublin as part of the Spinal Injuries Ireland Tall Ship Challenge to raise funds for support and services to help people with life-changing injuries. Over €80,000 was raised.

Victoria’s work as a disability advocate has seen her work on key campaigns to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities in Ireland. She’s also a founding member and chair of ATU Sligo Disability and Inclusion Sports Club. She has fallen in love with sailing since learning about navigating the ship and keeping logs, including wind speed, course details, and wet and dry temperatures, and looks forward to her next adventure.

“I felt part of the voyage crew from the beginning. Captain Simon told us there were no passengers on this trip. Every person had a role, was an equal team member and contributed to the success of the voyage”, she said.

Minister of State with responsibility for Farm Safety at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon, T.D., this week announced the provision of funding to Teagasc for the procurement of farm machinery simulators for use in agricultural colleges.

Making the announcement, Minister of State Heydon said: “My priority is the health, safety and wellbeing of our farmers, and this investment of over €1.25 million in 18 agricultural machinery simulators represents a significant step up in the efforts of my Department and Teagasc to improve the safety record around farm machinery and tractors.

They will be ready and in use in all the agricultural colleges in the coming academic year”.

Farming has a poor safety record, accounting for approximately 42% of fatal work-

place incidents in the period 2011-2020, yet only 6% of the working population is employed in the sector. Over half of fatal farm incidents are associated with tractors, farm vehicles and machinery. Teagasc National Farm Survey data indicates that about 700 farm vehicle and machinery incidents take place annually.

Minister Heydon added: “These simulators will be a great asset in teaching students the key safety elements of operating farm machinery. The simulators will enable students to train in the operation of a range of machinery”.

The simulators will be used at all agricultural and horticultural colleges and will be available to students completing courses at the colleges and also to students at the universities and technological universities who use the college facilities for practical learning.

Increased Organic payments rates a positive step – IFA IFA Organic Project Team Chair John Curran has acknowledged that the proposed increased payment rates for farmers participating in the organic farm scheme is a positive step for the sector.

“The current payment rates are not enough to encourage farmers to convert and to remain farming organically. Farmers will now be paid over €300/ha to convert to organics. IFA have lobbied for sub-

stantial increases to the rates under the new CAP. This announcement is a step in the right direction,” John Curran said.

The rates are subject to approval by the European Commission as part of the ongoing discussions on approval of Ireland’s CAP Strategic Plan, and would apply from 1st January 2023.

“Organic farming incurs a lot of additional ‘hidden’ costs such as

training and costs associated with certification. The proposal of a new ‘participation payment’ is also positive. This payment will be €2000 in the first year of conversion and €1400/year thereafter,” he said.

ment, it is imperative that the sector continues to receive additional support in terms of advisory support and knowledge transfer.

“This will allow farmers to make informed decision should they decide to pursue organic farming.

The establishment of robust markets to facilitate the increase in organic production must also be a priority of the newly-established organic forum,” John Curran said.

IFA President Tim Cullinan said that farmers must be recognised for the contributions they are making to reducing emissions from other sectors.

Cullinan responds to emissions’ figures IFA President Tim Cullinan said recent emissions figures for agriculture reflect decisions made by farmers, based on Government policy, after the abolition of milk quotas.

“Farmers were urged to expand and have invested heavily in their businesses. They are committed to doing their fair share to see emissions reduce by 22% by 2030,

but it will take time for the substantial changes in practice that are taking place at farm level to be reflected in the emissions figures” Tim Cullinan said.

“Milk output and fertiliser use are down in 2022, and there is a natural levelling off in cow numbers” he said.

“In addition, the EPA are using international

multipliers to calculate methane output per cow.

Teagasc trials are now showing that cows grazing outdoors produce less methane than the systems in other counties” he added.

“This data needs to be peer-reviewed but it could make a significant difference to farm sector emissions figures” the IFA President concluded.

Murphy: Farmers want to play part on climate change Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has commended Agricultural Minister Charlie McConalogue for “standing firm for the agricultural community” in a time of great pressure due to climate change requirements.

Senator Murphy has described some of the “finger pointing” at the farming community as deeply disturbing in a country that “says it respects democracy”.

“I constantly meet farmers who will play their part in climate change and want to do so without delay. How-

ever, we cannot allow farming practices to be wiped out. Yes, there will be changes needed in some practices, but this type of diktat coming from some – that farmers must do what they’re told – is not the way to move forward”.

He added: “I met with Agricultural Minister Charlie McConalogue last week and was accompanied by farmers from around the country, led by Roscommon farmer Gerry Connellan. I also met with local IFA representatives on this matter.

“My commitment is to the rural communities who are not big environmental destroyers and certainly not so in this part of the country”.

“Farmers are changing practices, such as using less fertiliser, using new seed mixes, appealing for the setting up of anaerobic digestion facilities and the use of solar panels on farms”.

Senator Murphy concluded by saying that while he did not want an election now, this matter could cause the Government to fall.

Explore Roscommon is theme of new summer campaign Explore Roscommon is the enticing theme of the new summer campaign launched by Visit Roscommon, aimed at the domestic tourism market.

Roscommon has remained well under the radar of many holiday-makers but has much to offer within a 90-minute drive from either coast. This is particularly true as visitors seek outdoor activities and less crowded facilities.

The campaign, funded

by Roscommon County Council, will raise awareness of the outdoor activities, trails, heritage and water sport attractions waiting to be discovered and driving traffic to the visitroscommon.ie website. It will include a combination of traditional and online media working with tourism providers in the county. The first video will be launched in the next few weeks and tourist maps and brochure are already available.

“It’s a really exciting step forward for tourism in Roscommon”, said Eimear Dowd (Tourism Officer, Roscommon County Council). “We have seen strong growth in tourism attractions over the last few years and are looking forward to shining a light on some of the hidden gems here”.

With the River Shannon forming most of the eastern county boundary and several significant lakes too, it’s unsurprising that water sport is well represented with kayaking, boating, and river cruising as well as the thrill of the inflatable waterpark at Baysports in Hodson Bay. Lough Key Forest Park is a glorious combination of history and activities based on the historic Rockingham Es-

tate near Boyle. Added to treetop walks and ziplining are innovative weather dependent options such as Boda Borg, a Swedish concept which requires dealing with mind-bending puzzles and showing teamwork to progress through its stages. Additionally, there’s Boyle town, Boyle Abbey and the superbly restored King House, which can be reached by an 8km cycle route through woodland and along the Boyle Canal.

The newly-opened National Famine Museum at Strokestown Park House presents local and national famine history in a new light. Starting from Strokestown, the National Famine Way traces the 165km route to the Dublin docklands which tenant farmers and their families walked in Black ’47.

A free downloadable app tells their stories at each of around 30 bronze cast children’s shoes marking the way. Most of it is off road along the Royal Canal.

In Tulsk, the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre is a journey back to a time before the pyramids, to the world of Queen Medb and the epic tale of the Táin Bó Cuailnge. Nearby is the mystical Oweynagat (Cave of the Cats), known as ‘Gate to Hell’ and the entrance to the Otherworld.

Back in the real world, the Miners Way Historical Trail passes through Lough Key Forest Park leading to Arigna and the Arigna Mining Experience where visitors can explore one of Ireland’s few coal mines in the company of a former miner.

The big news last weekend in the Kepak Roscommon SHC was the return to form of Athleague who beat Tremane by 3-15 to 1-9 in what was a repeat of last year’s final.

First-half goals from Tomas Connaughton and Alan Cunniffe helped Athleague to a 2-7 to 0-6 half-time lead and they never looked back after that. Elsewhere, Roscommon Gaels bowed out of the championship after a good performance against St Dominic’s, losing out by four points (2-9 to 0-11). Naos Connaughton and Conall Kennelly were the stars for Dominic’s, accounting for 2-7 between them.

Padraig Pearses produced a very impressive display as they put Oran to the sword. Daniel Glynn was in superb form, scoring 0-14 as they won by five points, 0-21 to 1-13, to maintain their unbeaten run.

This Sunday, the two unbeaten teams, Four Roads and Padraig Pearses, clash for a place in the semifinals, while Oran face a Roscommon Gaels team who are already out of the competition.

In the U-21 HC final played last week in Athleague, Athleague/Tremane beat Four Roads by 2-16 to 0-17 in what was a very competitive and enjoyable decider.

Minister for Sport visits Creggs RFC

On Friday evening last, Minister for Sport Jack Chambers TD, Minister of State for Disability, Anne Rabbitte TD, Senator Aisling Dolan and Galway County Councillor Michael Connolly paid an informal visit to Creggs RFC to follow up on the recent Sports Capital Grant.

They were met by the President, Adrian Leddy, along with committee and club members and were given a tour of the grounds including the one-kilometre tarmac walkway, the three grass pitches and the 4G all-weather pitch with the terrace and seated stand. Particular attention was given to the new dressing rooms/gym building which is progressing on schedule.

Minister Chambers congratulated the club for their community-based inclusivity and wished them well in the upcoming season.

Adrian Leddy spoke of the huge support from the community through both commitment and sponsorship which helps to keep the club afloat. He also spoke of the schools, both primary and secondary, who use the facility regularly including Minister for Sport Jack Chambers TD, Minister of State for Disability, Anne Rabbitte TD, Senator Aisling Dolan and Galway County Councillor Michael Connolly pictured with Creggs RFC President Adrian Leddy and other members of the committee and club during last Friday’s visit. other sports clubs in the area.

Roscommon Preview Racing opens at Lenabane with a 2m maiden hurdle followed by the Railway Bar Maiden Hurdle over 2m 4f for horses that are maidens over hurdles and on the flat. The 3rd race is the Paul Byron Shoes Handicap Hurdle over 3m bring hurdle racing to a close. The first over the major obstacles is the John F Hanley Groundscare Beginners Chase over 2m followed by the Connaughton Auctioneers Handicap Chase over 2m 5f. The penultimate race is a 3m handicap chase and the Brian Keenan Bookmaker Flat Race, a bumper for amateur riders only, brings the action to a close. The Galway Racing Festival This year’s Galway Festival is back to having a full attend-

ance and the racing programme is back to mixed cards very day, much different and more enjoyable than last year.

On Monday festival racing began with a shock winner in the Novice Hurdle as Gordon Elliott and Jordan Gainsford won with Royal Eagle at 18/1 by 3l from Razdan with the odds-on favourite HMS Seahorse 3rd a head further back.

The Easyfix Handicap Hurdle ended in a ding-dong battle with the Denis Hogan trained and ridden 12/1 Darkened getting back up to win by a nose from the Tom Gibney trained Listentiltellyea with Darragh O’Keeffe aboard, and Insane Bolt third, ½l away. No relief for punters as the flat started with defeat for Dermot Weld’s odds-on Tiverton by Jessica Harrington’s Pivotal Trigger by 1½l under Shane Foley with Jim Bolger’s Serious Challenge filling the minor placings.

Fr Breen is synonymous with racing in Galway, especially on Sunday where he started mass in the parade ring for punters before racing.

Fleming flair decisive in great final

The Hollywood Bar Superleague continued in the Roscommon town venue last weekend, with some great darts.

Some of the top local darters competed on the night for valuable league points, with the competition bringing out the best of all assembled.

Top finishing on the night came from Ciaran Hickey (132) and Sean Fleming (120), while the event went down to the final between the two experienced players who put on a great show of darts.

Qualifying from a difficult group, Paul Carton had a 3-0 win over Tommy Dolan in the last 16, before following that up with a 3-0 quarter-final win over Wayne Harries

and a hard-fought 3-2 semi-final win over Martin Fleming.

On the other side of the draw Sean Fleming had topped his group, following it up with a 3-1 win in the last 16 against Ciaran Hickey. An on-form Ken Turkington pushed Fleming all the way before the Ballaghaderreen player edged him 3-2, before Fleming sealed his final spot with a 3-1 win over Rory Hunt in one of the games of the night.

The final itself featured lots of high scores (including a 180 from Carton) and a 15-dart leg from Fleming.

With the score at 2-2, the final leg was a tight affair. Good scoring from Carton

(81, 85, 100) was matched by Fleming (85, 85, 100), and on this occasion it was to be Fleming who ran out the winner, on a 3-2 scoreline.

Well done to both players on a top class display. Many thanks to all the players who attended on the night and who produced such a high standard.

Athlone Open Week finishes on Bank Holiday Monday with a fun 3-person Scramble sponsored by Athlone Boat Club.

There was great excitement in Athlone Golf Club on Thursday last when the Ladies Challenge Cup Team beat Athenry G.C. to progress to the Connacht Final which will be held in Gort on the 13th of August.

Managers Mary McHale and Wendy Kearon were delighted with the fantastic standard of play by team members Chris Fuery, Anne Marie Hynes, Denise Lally, Bernie Stapleton and Margaret Geoghegan. Best of luck to the Challenge Cup team in the final.

There were victories also for the Men’s Junior Cup team and the Jack O’Sullivan team.

Boyle Boyle had a notable victory over Enniscrone GC in the first round of the Jack O’Sullivan Interclub Tournament.

In the games in Boyle, Vincent Egan and Lorcan Egan won, and even though Boyle lost one of the three Enniscrone games, in the second of the Enniscrone ties Shane O’Dowd and Karl Keenan pulled off the most vital result of the day, beating their opposite numbers from Enniscrone on the 14th hole of their own course.

Back in Boyle, Martin Wynne and Mark Whelan were three holes down early on in their match but overturned this deficit to win the deciding game.

Best of luck to Shane and the team in the next round.

Mark Feehan carried some of his recent Thursday night form through to the competition played on Saturday and Sunday, the 16/17th of July, winning the 18-hole Stroke competition with a 61 nett.

Wishing all our men the best of luck in the Captain’s (Kieran Madden) Prize this weekend. The first 18 holes can be played on either Friday or Saturday with the top 30 qualifiers from day one allocated a time from 2.30 pm onwards for the second 18 holes on Sunday, 31st July. Everyone else can play any other time during the day.

There is also a 9-hole competition for Ladies on Sunday after 4.30 pm. Book your time on BRS. Kieran has been a great Captain for the club and we hope he enjoys next weekend. Presentation of prizes will be on Sunday evening, followed by music.

A great couple of days was had by the ladies playing in Ruth Kilduff’s Lady Captain’s Prize. There were different weather conditions over the two days’ play but nonetheless great scores were achieved. The overall winner was Pat Pierce with 139 nett (on last 18 holes) from Colette Glynn on the same score.

Kingdom reclaim Sam, but Galway can hold heads high Kerry bench compliments Clifford class < SEAMUS DUKE

The Sam Maguire Cup will be spending the winter in familiar territory after Kerry claimed their 38th All-Ireland senior football title last Sunday. They were made fight all the way by a Galway side who were ultimately found wanting not on the field of play – but on the strength (or lack of it) of their bench.

The exploits of David Clifford and Shane Walsh have been (rightly) lauded in the analysis since, but as the match entered the last ten minutes it was the Kerry subs that made such a big difference. In particular, Killian and Adrian Spillane added punch to the Kerry attack while down at the other end Galway’s subs had no such impact.

It was a hugely enjoyable final, and some of the point-scoring from David Clifford and Shane Walsh was phenomenal. We saw two of the great final performances of all time on Sunday last.

It was just as well from a Kerry point of view that Clifford was at his very best because Seanie O’Shea was marked out of it by Liam Silke and Paul Geaney and Paudie Clifford were peripheral figures.

Galway had their problems too. After a great year up to Sunday, Damien Comer was largely anonymous and

Rob Finnerty never got into the game.

Still, with Shane Walsh playing as he was, the Tribesmen were always in with a chance. Mention too of Cillian McDaid, who had his best game of the year at midfield – scoring four great points from play – and John Daly too, who was very effective going forward, especially in the first half.

In the final analysis, and after a very poor first half for Kerry in general, Clifford was key man and he was given considerable assistance at half-time with the arrival of the Spillane brothers. Other Kerry men who did well on the day were Graham O’Sullivan and Gavin White, the latter one of the players of the year.

Remarkably, neither goalkeeper had a shot to save in the entire game. But the standard of point-scoring, especially from the aforementioned Clifford and Walsh, certainly made up for that lack of goalmouth action. Kerry were favourites for the All-Ireland from the start of the year. They just about deserved to win it.

With Dublin ‘coming back to the pack’ there is optimism among several counties that they can compete at the highest level. Armagh, Derry, Mayo, Dublin and Tyrone will all feel that they can get back to the mountain top in the next few years. However, history has shown that once Kerry have the bit between

their teeth they tend to be the team to beat and that may well prove to be the case over the next few years. Their age profile is very young and that’s a worry to everyone else.

Should Roscommon be included in the list of those who might challenge in the coming years? Not on the evidence of the past two or three years, but being in Division One of the league is not a bad place to start.

It was surreal watching an All-Ireland senior football final in the middle of July. Next year the GAA hope to squeeze a much longer season into the same timeframe. I wish them good luck with that. I am one of those who thinks that the season is far too short and that the All-Ireland finals should be held at the end of August at the earliest.

Up in the RTE commentary box Pat Spillane shed a tear as he spent his last day as a pundit on The Sunday Game.

At the end of the day his beloved Kingdom are back on top of the Gaelic football tree. It will be hard to get them down too.
