Executor Duties and Responsibilities My late uncle appointed me as Executor in his will. My brothers and I are the beneficiaries in his estate. I am unsure of what is expected of me. What exactly is an Executor and what do they do? Please explain an Executor’s duties to me.

The Executor of a will is the person named by the maker of a will (Testator) to carry out the directions of the will. The Executor is obliged by law to preserve, protect and administer the estate of the deceased person strictly in accordance with the terms of the will.

An Executor’s main duties include the following: • Ensure that a death certificate is obtained.

• Ascertain the extent of the deceased person’s estate.

• Ensure that all debts owed by the deceased at the time of death are accounted for and paid out of the estate. The executor must also ensure that all funeral expenses are paid.

• Trace all of the beneficiaries outlined in the deceased person’s Will.

• Ensure that the deceased person’s estate is correctly and properly valued for Revenue purposes.

• Protect the assets of the estate until they are distributed e.g. ensure that any house or other such property is adequately insured.

• When the Grant of Probate has issued, the Executor must distribute the assets in accordance with the terms of the Will.

• When the estate is finalised and all bequests have been settled, the Executor must produce a set of Estate Accounts which outlines all money received and paid out.

Generally your Solicitor will assist you each of the above. It is advisable to consult with a Solicitor as soon as possible after the death of the Testator to commence the administration process. Then you made the BIG CALL? Yes…and I decided on €20. Just made a decision, stuck with it!

Decisive! Love it! Like when Harry Kane is taking a penalty…decide which side to go for, and STICK WITH IT! Exactly!

No last-minute indecision…you weren’t thinking ‘€15 for a quick getaway’ or ‘€30 to keep me going most of the week’?

Nope! Decision made – €20!

Excellent!

Well, suddenly a guy at the pump opposite is staring at me, like I should know him…

Did you?

It’s hard to know these days! I’m struggling to recognise people because of the masks…

Don’t tell me you ignored him?

Nah, I waved. But that distracted me, and I ran over…

You ran over to him?

NO! On the pump! I went into ‘Dreaded Dilemma’ territory!

What in the name of God is ‘Dreaded Dilemma’ territory at a fuel pump?

You must know! I had decided on €20… but because I was distracted, I ran over to €20 and six cent!

Oh, THAT! (They pause to nostalgically recall those glorious days when petrol pump attendants were employed) So…this dreaded dilemma…

Do I breeze into the shop and offer a €20 note, or do I rustle up six cent in coins – that can be embarrassing for the customer and for the staff member…or do I hand in €50 and wonder if they’ll break it? Instead, I took the extreme step…

This is chaotic! It’s like Harry Kane changing his mind at the last moment!

I know! Anyways, I went for the next milestone…straight for €25!

That pump…it’s playing with your mind now?

Kind of!

So?

So I went into the shop and got chatting to the man who was at the other pump.

Sure I knew him well! But then I was hit by ‘Pump Mortification’!

Eh…what’s that?

I was chatting so long, I forgot I’d bought petrol…and left without paying! Ultimate Pump Mortification!

And? Oh I doubled back within minutes!

Wow! So what was it in the end? €25? €30? €24.98? Extra embarrassing this time, with the coins and the confusion…?

Oh no problem…I just paid by card!

Ireland were magnificent in their keenly-awaited Six Nations encounter with England, the Irish commanding winners by 32-18.

What we didn’t like…

Exactly! I usually slow up from around €24.40…take it nice and gently then…

Actually I usually challenge myself to try and hit €25 perfectly…on the spot! But I digress. What happened?

The second ‘Dreaded Dilemma’ happened! Because of the pressure, I released my grip on the nozzle a fraction too early! Ended up at €24.98…

Ah, I know the feeling! Now it’s too risky to press the nozzle again, or – before you know it – you could be heading for €30!

County has eighth highest rate of Covid-19 < DAN DOONER

There were fewer than five new cases of Covid-19 in Roscommon yesterday (Wednesday), but the county still remains eighth highest nationally in terms of its 14-day incidence rate, currently at 153.4.

There has been some good news

in recent days, however, as Roscommon’s five-day moving average has reduced to six. The county has recorded 99 new cases of Covid-19 in the last fourteen days.

Nationally, the Department of Health was notified of eighteen additional deaths yesterday afternoon and 683 new cases.

As of 8 am yesterday morning, 329 Covid-19 patients are hospitalised, with 76 of those in ICU. There were eighteen additional hospitalisations in the previous 24 hours.

On the vaccine front, as of Sunday, March 21s, there had been 680,015 doses of Covid-19 vaccine admin-

istered in Ireland. 495,824 people had by then received their first dose while 184,191 had received their second.

Locally, the Roscommon Vaccination Centre officially opened at the Abbey Hotel on Monday and is expected to administer 1,800 doses of vaccine by the end of this week.

Heat on illegal dumpers following major bog fire < DAN DOONER

A major gorse fire caused extensive damage to bogland in the Drinagh area, just off the N5 between Scramogue and Tarmonbarry, on Saturday night as fire services battled for several hours to bring the blaze under control.

It’s not known what caused the fire but it is understood that it started at shortly after 5.30 pm and was eventually brought under control just after midnight on Saturday.

It’s understood the area is a blackspot for illegal dumping and that, along with dry gorse and mild weather, may have been a factor in the spread of the fire.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy attended the scene of the blaze on Saturday and called on Roscommon County Council to redouble its efforts in dealing with illegal dumping.

“The Curraghroe link road is a very busy road, and I must com-

mend the local fire services for getting the fires under control.

Thankfully, there were no reports of any injuries.

“While it is not clear how the fires started, I fear that the ongoing problem with illegal dumping in the Culliagh and Drinagh areas may have exacerbated the situation. If a bog fire starts in these areas, there is so much material dumped illegally that could be hazardous or volatile in a fire, such as aerosols, oil, batteries,

“I am calling on Roscommon County Council to redouble its efforts to tackle this ongoing illegal dumping. I think the council should consider employing a private security firm to patrol or monitor these kind of blackspot areas,” he concluded.

Kilduff seeks annual fund for cemetery works < DAN DOONER

Independent councillor Donal Kilduff called for the establishment of an annual fund for cemeteries, which would allow capital works projects to be carried out in order to address “serious issues of dilapidation” at Monday’s meeting of Roscommon County Council.

Cllr. Kilduff said many Roscommon cemeteries require urgent restoration works and it was unfair to leave the burden with voluntary groups.

“Roscommon County Council has a limited annual budget

for the care of cemeteries in the county and this is just enough to cover basic maintenance and grant assist local voluntary groups to maintain these sacred public spaces.

“Local voluntary groups, despite their wonderful selfless work, are often constrained in what they can do due to scale of works, health and safety legislation and public liability issues.

“In pursuit of a solution to this I learned that there is in fact no national fund for local authorities to apply to for capital works projects at cemeteries. This of course is com-

pletely unacceptable.

“Overgrown trees, falling walls and displaced pavements are all a health and safety hazard in a public space and it also reflects very badly on us as a people that we would allow the final resting places of our deceased loved ones to fall into disrepair”.

Cllr. Kilduff’s motion that an annual fund be established for capital works projects at cemeteries received unanimous support among members. A letter will now be forwarded to Government while the motion will also be circulated among other local authorities.

€500,000 for Mote Park Recreation Trail < DAN DOONER

Funding of €500,000 under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme was announced this week for the Mote Park Recreation Trail Experience near Roscommon town. The funding will also provide for the development of a cycle link to the Beara Breffni Way on the River Suck.

Traditional ground trails will be developed through the park as well as new vertical trails and a vertical walkway and viewing tower with educational elements.

Independent TD Denis Naughten welcomed the announcement.

“The longer-term plan is to link the new tower at Roscommon Castle with this now-funded viewing tower in Mote Park with a safe

walking and cycling route from Roscommon Town,” he said.

“Over the last five years, significant investment has been provided across County Roscommon to improve local recreational facilities and work is now underway to bring these developments together in a promotional video for our county.

“These facilities will enhance the visitor experience to our county and Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands as well as improving local facilities that we have been so reliant on over the last twelve months of lockdown”.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy said that outdoor recreation and exercise was more important than ever before.

“This investment in Mote Park

will help support healthy, active lifestyles while at the same time helping to contribute to rural economies and will be of benefit to local communities and visitors to the area,” he said.

Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan said it was a fantastic investment and would mean more access through trails and cycle routes.

“The regeneration team in our Local Authority deserves enormous credit with a quality application that scored the highest points as well as working with the volunteers on the Mote Park Conservation Group. I would also like to thank Minister Heather Humphreys for her support of development projects in the West,” she said.

Leitrim TD, Frank Feighan, said the funding was a major boost to the area and to the Beara Breffni Way, which stretches from Cork to Leitrim Village.

“This announcement significantly enhances the walk which in time will gain visitor numbers whereby like the ‘Camino’ in Spain people will visit Ireland over many years walking sections of the route,” he said.

“I want to thank Minister Humphreys and her Department for recognising the potential of Mote Park with this huge financial boost, I also acknowledge the work of local community groups in collaboration with Roscommon County Council for their work behind the scenes in preparing the funding application”.

Roscommon author, Brigid Kavanagh, says she is delighted with the response to her first book ‘In My Mind’s Eye – Walking Amongst Ghosts’ since its release last month.

The 95-year-old, who hails from Strokestown but has been living in Dublin for most of her life, was in fine form when chatting to the Roscommon People earlier this week.

“My sons, Declan and Seán, started all of this and got the book published.

I didn’t think it would work…but it has,” she said.

‘In My Mind’s Eye’ is a collection of 95 stories and poems, compiled over a lifetime of writing, and takes the reader back to Brigid’s childhood and growing up in rural Roscommon.

“I never regarded myself as a poet but I took part in a writing class some years ago. Our tutor, Áine Miller, would give us homework each week and it would include writing poetry,” she added.

Brigid’s writing career began at the age of 12 in 1938 when she was asked to contribute to the Folklore Collection in primary school. She wrote a story, given to her by her father, John Shiel, about the Mahon Landlords who once

“I attended the convent in Strokestown and we were given great encouragement by our teacher, Sister de Sales, who used to get me to write compositions as part of our English classes. She was related to the Gately family in Roscommon and she really wanted us to do well and would always encourage us to read too,” she said.

Brigid’s book contains wonderful stories which offer a glimpse into daily life in Strokestown and County Roscommon during an era when the young Irish Republic struggled through difficulties such as the Land Wars. It’s part

social history and part personal memoir in memory of Brigid’s late husband Michael and parents, Mai and John Shiel.

‘In My Mind’s Eye’ was compiled and edited by two of Brigid’s sons, Seán and Declan Kavanagh during lockdown. Declan is currently living in Strokestown with his family, where Brigid was still a regular visitor prior to Covid-19.

“It was all their idea,” she says. “I was flattered and just glad they liked it. I told them if they wanted to publish it then they could go ahead!”

Brigid’s family, including her six children, are un-

derstandably proud of the publication, and so too is its author.

“I thought it was wonderful when they presented it to me with a poem in each chapter. It just goes to show that it’s never too late apparently. Even though I thought it was!”

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK A column by Roscommon People editor Thursday On Liveline today, I was pleased to hear lots of common sense from a familiar voice. One of Joe’s callers was Dr. Greg Kelly, the Castlerea-based GP. Dr. Greg spoke well, reflecting the thoughts of the man and woman in the street/surgery, while modestly bringing his own knowledge and experience to the debates on the course of the pandemic and the troubled vaccine rollout.

It’s almost 20 years since Dr. Greg flirted with a political career, famously losing out narrowly (and dramatically) when running for the Dáil in 2002. In the years since, he’s been an understated and credible advocate of the need to fight for adequate health services, both locally and nationally.

Friday Buoyed by the brilliance of Tipperary jockey Rachael Blackmore – who is causing a sensation at Cheltenham – I did an uncharacteristic thing today. I picked up a copy of the Racing Post, which, incidentally, is printed by the Roscommon People’s printers, the Meath Chronicle. My browsing suggests that it’s a fine paper, packed with informed articles, statistics and betting odds.

Victory in today’s first race at Cheltenham was Blackmore’s sixth of the festival, confirming her status as leading jockey. Later, in the Gold Cup, Rachael flirts with immortality, but her strong finish on A Plus Tard can’t deny Jack Kennedy on Minella Indo.

She may have had to settle for ‘silver’ in the Gold Cup, but Rachael dominated Cheltenham. Her stunning feats over recent days brightened life for millions of people in Ireland and the UK (and increased sales of the Racing Post in Roscommon).

Later on Friday Driving along a stretch of road which includes about ten houses, I can’t help but notice that three men have (no doubt unwittingly) thrown down the gauntlet. On this beautiful afternoon, these three wise men have a subtle message for us all. Nobody can escape from the truth of their message.

Saturday I’d forgotten that he was also known as ‘Lash’. The nickname that registered most with me was ‘Hotshot Lorimer’. Peter Lorimer, who died today, was comic strip hero Roy of the Rovers brought to life.

As a young Leeds supporter in Rooskey in the 1970s, I was confident that my friends – who bizarrely supported other clubs – all had more than a sneaking fondness for Lorimer. How could a teenage football fan not love a man deemed to have the strongest shot in football?

We actually saw very little live football in those days. What we saw, we added to with our imagination. What we read in Shoot! magazine helped, as did those wonderful, atmospheric commentaries on BBC Radio.

Lorimer, a Scottish international, was one of the stars of the great Leeds United team (moulded by Don Revie). His thunderbolt shots were feared by the goalkeepers of the day.

He made 705 appearances for Leeds, and remains the club’s all-time top scorer, with 238 goals.

Thankfully, there is some impressive footage of him on YouTube.

Have a look at his ‘Top 20 Goals’ there and you will see why Peter Lorimer was so loved. Rest in peace, Hotshot Lorimer. You excited the imagination of a young boy in Rooskey over 40 years ago; you thrilled millions of people in your lifetime.

Later on Saturday As the Scottish try count mercilessly rises on the TV, I’m wondering how deflating it must be to play for Italy just now. Certainly it’s an honour to represent your country, but it can’t be much fun getting well beaten every time you take the field. Scotland have just scored try number eight. This Six Nations tournament is made up of five credible contenders and one eternal minnow. Italy have lost 52 of their last 54 matches. Still, I suppose Rome wasn’t built in a day…

Sunday I bow to the inevitable (see ‘Later on Friday’) and cut the grass. The weather is beautiful. It’s relaxing.

There’s time to think. Rod Stewart was wrong, the first cut isn’t the deepest. As it’s the ‘opening day of the season’, I keep the cut short – and try to make sure the thinking isn’t too deep either. A beautiful spring, the promise of summer, the scent of the garden…this is just what we need.

I don’t necessarily wish to turn this into a rugby column, but the Guinness Six Nations has certainly distracted us from the Covid gloom today. Hot on the heels of Scotland’s romp against the poor Italians, came a magnificent Ireland performance against England.

This was vintage Ireland, the team producing a superb hour of rugby after a slow start. Heroes all over the field, including Tadhg Furlong, Keith Earls, Johnny Sexton and just about everyone else. Special mention to Athlone’s superstar, Robbie Henshaw, the RTE man

of the match. A memorable day ended with touching tears from CJ Stander, playing his last game for Ireland.

In a memorable episode of ‘The Likely Lads’, a classic UK sit-com, the characters tried to avoid finding out the result of an England match.

They’d really struggle today, in the age of social media/smartphones. I recorded France v Wales, and like the ‘Likely Lads’ many decades ago, I tried to avoid the score all night.

Somehow I succeeded. Finally, around midnight, I fast-forwarded my way through the game, and what a classic it was. Sport is cruel, sport is wonderful. In a sensational finale, France denied Wales the Grand Slam with a late, late try. Wales may

It’s bad enough that the number of crisps in a Tayto bag has been mischeviously reduced in recent years – a sort of snacks’ tax – but now it’s reaching crisis proportions.

Today, as part of a bigger ‘shop’, I bought a Tayto six-pack. Firstly, and I swear it’s true, there was an empty bag included. Empty! Then, when we checked the remaining bags, it was shocking to note how few crisps were in them! The great Crisp Cull continues. I know it’s been going on for years… just as chocolate bars are getting smaller…but how can they be so heartless as to escalate this during a pandemic?

Someone in Tayto-land needs to stop this madness. I know the empty bag had to be an error, but the timing is terrible. Thin Tayto bags.

Finalists in Credit Union ‘Imagine More’ Art Competition The winners of the Credit Union Art Competition were announced in a special virtual ceremony, hosted by RTÉ broadcaster Marty Whelan, and broadcasted on Wednesday evening, March 24th. The event was streamed live on The Irish League of Credit Union’s (ILCU) social media channels for finalists and their family, friends, and credit unions to tune into.

The theme for this year’s competition was ‘Imagine More’, and it encouraged participants to think past their current situation and use their imagination to dream about what life will be like when restrictions aren’t a large part of our world. The theme also aimed to reflect and display just how important the arts are in Irish society. Despite the current challenges, art has kept people from all walks of life connected and this year’s theme encouraged entrants to express this connectivity on paper or canvass.

Now in its 37th year, the competition continues to capture the imagination of participants and is one of the longest running competitions of its type.

Bernie Moran (CEO, Roscommon Credit Union Ltd.) said: “This year’s theme really inspired local entrants and challenged them to unlock their imagination. The art competition is a highlight of our calendar, and this year we had over 900 entrants from the community to our local competition.

“Six talented local winners, proudly representing Roscommon Credit Union Ltd, progressed to the regional finals late last year. Of these six, Mia Whyte in the 11-13 age category, Lauren McTiernan in the 14-17 age category (both from Roscommon Convent of Mercy) and our very own artistic Lynda Lane in the over 18s category, advanced to the national final. Lauren McTiernan was ultimately awarded runner-up in the national 14-17 age category.

This was a marvellous achievement by all three, and especially for Lauren, whose piece will be part of the 2022 Credit Union Calendar!”

Frances Kilcommins (art teacher, Roscommon Convent of Mercy) expressed her delight at having two students participate in the national final of the Credit Union Art Competition, and said both Lauren and Mia are extremely creative and naturally talented students. Mia’s piece – ‘Flutter of Hope’ – is very fitting for the times we are in. Lauren’s painting – ‘Contemplation in isolation’ – offers a prime example of her talent and passion for art, as well as her deep understanding of the theme ‘Imagine More’.

Lauren also attends Roscommon School of Art, where art teacher Stephanie Cuddy Cullen, explains that, “Lauren’s technical ability and excellence in observation have evolved into this loose expressive style, evident in her winning entry.

Every artist hides some secrets in their work and Lauren’s is in the form of a little love heart found amidst the chaos of the vibrating hair. The great 19th century painter Paul Cezanne said that ‘we live in a rainbow of chaos’, this is well expressed in Lauren’s painting”.

Bernie concluded, saying: “Art plays a critical role in enriching the lives of all people and is central to sustaining and increasing connections. The immense talent we saw through our local competition and on display at the national ceremony shows the hope and imagination of brighter

days to come. We were blown away by the talent

and wish to congratulate all who entered, especially

our three national finalists Mia, Lauren and Lynda”.

CLÁR PROGRAMME The Department of Rural and Community Development announced details of the CLÁR programme for 2021 on 15th March 2021. CLÁR provides funding for small scale infrastructural projects in rural areas that have suffered significant levels of population decline. Again this year the Measures have been reviewed to ensure they are adapting to meet the needs of our changing rural communities. There is a national allocation of €5.5million for 2021 under 3 measures to be operated via Local Authorities and the Department of Rural and Community Development for a range of School and Community projects.

Measures 3(b) will be operated directly by the Department of Rural and Community Development.

New CLÁR Innovation Measure

Expressions of Interest will be invited by the Department directly from Local Authorities, Local Development Companies, community groups and representative bodies for businesses and other organisations located in CLÁR area for the CLÁR Innovation Measure. Funding will be provided for up to 95% of the total cost subject to a maximum grant of €50,000. This funding will be targeted at piloting new ideas which address specific challenges faced by communities in CLÁR areas, including rural isolation, population change, social disadvantage and marginalisation. This Measure provides a great opportunity for communities to identify the specific challenges they face and to come up with innovative ways to address them.

PTSB to withdraw cash services in Roscommon Permanent TSB is set to withdraw cash desk services at its Roscommon town branch by the end of June, as part of a withdrawal of services at 44 branches nationwide.

newsbriefs Anti-vaccine stickers removed in Athleague

Cam Defibrillator Group 5K Walk

Athleague Tidy Towns took to social media this week to thank a local volunteer for removing anti-vaccine and anti-mask stickers from various parts of the village.

A post on the group’s Facebook page thanked the person for removing “horrible, unsightly stickers” from various locations around the village.

The post continued: ‘These stickers contained anti vaccine and anti mask messages linked to far right groups. They have no right littering our village in this way’.

The Cam Defibrillator Group is hosting an Easter Healthy Heart 5k Walk from April 3rd to April 5th. The proceeds will go towards the maintenance and upgrade of the group’s defibrillators.

All are welcome to participate in this worthy cause. Please follow all public health guidelines.

Joe Molloy, innocent teenage victim of War of Independence My uncle, Joe Molloy, was shot dead by the Black and Tans on Holy Saturday, March 26th 1921, four days shy of his 15th birthday.

Neither he nor any of his family were politically active, and were not in any way involved with the War of Independence or Ireland’s struggle for independence. Instead, he and all the Molloy family were living and farming in rural North Roscommon in the townland of Aughnafinnegan (Cryanstown), approximately six miles from Boyle. The family consisted of George, his wife Mary and their eight children, who in 1921 ranged from six-year-old Charlie (my father) to eighteen-year-old John James.

Paddy Moran, from nearby Crossna, had been executed in Mountjoy jail on March 14th. As a reprisal, an ambush had taken place near Keadue, in which two RIC members were killed.

This had enraged the Crown Forces (RIC, Auxiliaries and Black and Tans), who instigated intense patrols over a wide area locally.

On March 26th, George, along with his sons John James (eighteen), Paddy (sixteen), Joe (fifteen) and George (ten), were spreading farmyard manure in a field behind their home.

When their father had gone back to their house for another load, the boys saw the soldiers approaching, and then saw them lifting their guns as if to fire.

The Molloy boys threw themselves down onto the ground, but not before Joe was shot.

John James saw a soldier taking aim to shoot at Joe. Paddy heard Joe calling out that he was hit. The firing continued for some time – estimates of seven to eighteen minutes were given.

Afterwards, when the youngest son George was asked what he did when he heard the shooting, he replied that he said an act of contrition. At the age of ten, it was apparent to him that they were all in imminent danger of death.

George, the boys’ father, heard the shooting from the farmyard and went into the house for safety. He heard bullets strike the house. Shortly afterwards, two soldiers burst into the house, searched it and found nothing incriminating.

Other soldiers came to the house and told George to bring a stretcher to the field as a boy was shot.

George did so and found his son, Joe, wounded and “almost dead, he was unable to speak”.

Joe was taken by the military truck to Boyle Military Barracks, where the military doctor pronounced that “life was extinct”, and reported that Joe was hit by three bullets, including one that had been lodged in his back. The Molloy family were “allowed unrestricted admission to

the remains in the barracks” until the funeral left from there on Easter Monday at 6.30 pm for the burial in the family plot at Killelan cemetery. According to the Roscommon Herald report of the time, the funeral cortege was of huge dimensions, up to eig2hty horse-drawn vehicles, as well as horsemen and pedestrians.

Instead of an inquest, a Military Court of Inquiry was held in Boyle Military Barracks (King House) on Easter Monday, March 28th, and Tuesday, March 29th. Evidence was given

by Joe’s father George, and Joe’s brother Paddy. Neither statement was entirely in their own words as they contain both English and military terminology.

Interestingly, there is no record of a statement from John James, the eldest of the brothers who was present. He said later that he disagreed with most of the written records of Joe’s shooting.

We do not know whether he was asked to make a statement or whether he refused to sign one.

But he emigrated to New Zealand shortly afterwards and never returned.

Seven soldiers gave evidence at the Military Inquiry. Some of them said they saw a number of men who ran away and hid behind some bushes. These same soldiers confirmed these “unknown persons” were not the Molloy boys.

Sergeant Lawrence said he told the unknown persons to halt, but they didn’t, so he ordered his troops to fire.

Lieutenant Topley said he was in command

of a force of “about” twenty-seven returning to Dromdoe. One of his sections opened fire, but he confirmed he had not given them an order to fire. He saw no opposition and ordered, “cease fire”. It is clear from this that he felt there was no justification in having opened fire on the Molloy farm.

Nevertheless, the finding of the inquiry was that death was due to shock and haemorrhage, and that the “wounds were received, through accidentally, from being caught in a fire directed by military in execution of their duty on some unknown persons who were behaving in a suspicious manner”.

The report of the Military Inquiry was sent to Major General Jendwine, Curragh Camp, who examined it. He said that the evidence was insufficient, and that the Section Commanders should have been questioned and specific details should’ve been obtained regarding the men who fired and of those who ordered them to fire, why they fired and what they fired at.

However, this critical opinion that casted doubt on the finding of the Military Inquiry was not acted upon. As a result, the cause of Joe’s death as being accidental in the course of military duty was allowed to stand.

Family and locals believe there were no “unknown persons” there. It is believed that Joe Molloy was an innocent victim of the enraged Black and Tans.

Civil Defence HQ at ‘advanced stage’

The development of the new Roscommon Civil Defence headquarters is at an advanced stage, according to Roscommon County Council Director of Services, Shane Tiernan.

Addressing Monday’s meeting of the local authority, Mr. Tiernan said: “We hope to bring the project to a Part 8 planning process in the next couple of months and hope to begin construction by the end of the year.

The new headquarters will be located on the Ballybrogan estate in Roscommon town.

Meanwhile, members of Roscommon County Council were effusive in their praise of the local Civil Defence service following a presentation by Civil Defence Officer Fergal Conroy at Monday’s meeting.

Cathaoirleach Cllr. Laurence Fallon joined a chorus of councillors and members of the executive in praising their “tremendous work”, particularly in the past year.

Roscommon artist Cathal Cleary announced as recipient of PLATFORM 31 artist bursary

Roscommon artist Cathal Cleary has been announced as one of the 31 recipients of the inaugural PLATFORM 31 bursary, the national development scheme for artists to develop their practice and test new ideas of collaboration, research, audience development, place-based arts, and sharing their work.

Cathal Cleary said: “Through Platform 31, I will have the unique chance to connect up with a network of 31 artists to hear, share and learn. I look forward to seeing how this national exchange will push my work into the new”.

Developed by the Association of Local Authority Arts Officers (ALAAO) in collaboration with the Arts Council, PLATFORM 31 offers financial and developmental support for the 31 mid-career

The pilot scheme is envisioned as a platform for the participants to value their time, to showcase their work and their collaborations, sharing their learnings locally and nationally as a legacy of the project.

Sunday March 28 2021 Crowned with thorns, our Lord is lifted up on the Cross, where He dies as “King of the Jews”. Notice how many times He is called “king” in today’s Gospel – mostly in scorn and mockery.

As we hear the long accounts of His Passion, at every turn we must remind ourselves – He suffered this cruel and unusual violence for us.

He is the Suffering Servant foretold by Isaiah in today’s First Reading. He re-enacts the agony described in today’s Psalm, and even dies with the first words of that Psalm on His lips (see Psalm 22:1).

Listen carefully for the echoes of this Psalm throughout today’s Gospel – as Jesus is beaten, His hands and feet are pierced; as His enemies gamble for His clothes, wagging their heads, mocking His faith in God’s love, His faith that God will deliver Him. Are we that much different from our Lord’s tormenters?

Often, don’t we deny that He is King, refusing to obey His only commands that we love Him and one another? Don’t we render Him mock tribute, pay Him lip service with our half-hearted devotions?

In the dark noon of Calvary, the veil in Jerusalem’s temple was torn. It was a sign that by His death Jesus destroyed forever the barrier separating us from the presence of God. He was God and yet humbled Himself to come among us, we’re reminded in today’s Epistle. And despite our repeated failures, our frailty, Jesus still humbles Himself to come to us, offering us His body and blood in the Eucharist.

His enemies never understood: His kingship isn’t of this world (see John 18:36). He wants to write His law, His rule of life on our hearts and minds.

Athlone Castle’s virtual Easter Extravaganza!

Athlone Castle Visitor Centre will, once again, go virtual for an Easter Extravaganza. In line with current Government restrictions, Athlone Castle will present several online activities and events that will be shared on social channels over Easter weekend from Saturday, April 3rd.

Rosemarie Langtry, a well-respected Westmeath-based contemporary visual artist, will facilitate an arts and craft tutorial based on the symbolism of the Easter Tree. Inspired by the museum’s collection, Rose-

marie will demonstrate to children how to create an Easter tree, in the comfort of their own home. A tradition dating back centuries, an Easter Tree was usually decorated with coloured eggs. This art and craft tutorial will make designing your own tree a little easier. This tutorial will premiere on Saturday morning, April 3rd.

On Easter Sunday, April 4th, Eoghan Burke (also known as Fia Rua) will present a storytelling spectacular with the history of Athlone

Castle acting as the backdrop to his incredible and unique craft. Eoghan is a stage and screen actor and a talented musician and storyteller and will custom create an Easter-themed story. His story will bring the Easter Bunny to Athlone during the Great Siege of 1691, and follow his adventures during one of the bloodiest times in Athlone’s history.

Both events will be followed by competitions, whereby children will be invited to submit their works to win a prize. The competition based

on Eoghan’s storytelling will be art based. Children will be asked to submit an illustration or drawing based on the story that Eoghan will create. Following Rosemarie’s crafts tutorial, participants will be asked to share a photograph of their finished Easter Tree with us.

The winners of each competition will be announced on Thursday, April 15th, and will receive a prize.

Their masterpieces will also be featured as Athlone Castle news items on both our website and social

media channels and in press releases issued to local media for everyone to admire. We intend for the event to be inclusive and are inviting children from Athlone, neighbouring Midlands counties and further away to participate in the arts and crafts competitions.

Postman Joe raises €16,260 for new palliative care facility When Roscommon postman and local county councillor Joe Murphy saw the plans for the new palliative care facility currently being constructed in Roscommon town by Mayo Roscommon Hospice, he decided to come up with a fundraising idea to help support it.

When Joe put on his ‘An Post cap’ on he came up the novel idea of parking up his post-van for the day and taking out the bike to ‘Hop on for Hospice’ and cycle his rural Post run (approximately 80km) while delivering his letters.

Joe said: “Many of our lives are touched by illness, and I wanted to do my small bit to ensure that patients and their families are given every support possible at the most difficult time”.

The Hospice Palliative care facility is currently on target to be completed this summer. The facility will provide day care, community care and an eight-bed in-patient unit, providing respite and end of life services.

As Joe’s fundraiser comes to a close, he would like to take the opportunity to thank people and remind everyone that donations can still be made to hospice.ie.

“I would like to thank my manager Peter Hanley for his assistance, and my colleagues in An Post Roscommon who helped make this happen by delivering flyers and collecting donations,” he said, “Not to mention their own generous contributions, including donating an Internal An Post Prize they received for ‘Values In Practice’ of €930. One of my colleagues, Tommy, even made me breakfast on the day!

“I would also like to thank Angelina Nugent and Martina Jennings from Mayo Roscommon Hospice for their assistance and support throughout

the fundraiser. Their untiring dedication to this cause is truly inspirational.

The Rathmoyle Cemetery Committee was celebrating some unlikely good news this week as its entrance gates, which were reported stolen last month, turned up in a forest near Elphin!

The gates, which had only been installed within the last two years, were reported missing by locals on Sunday, February 14th.

The silver gates were discovered earlier this week after the environmental section of Roscommon County Coun-

cil carried out an inspection of illegal dumping on forestry ground between Elphin and Carrick-on-Shannon. The gates were found among the rubbish and appear undamaged.

The Rathmoyle Cemetery Group thanked the local community for their help following the discovery after its members were contacted by Castlerea Gardaí with the good news.

Local Fine Gael Cllr. Liam Callaghan said he was delighted with the news and said the committee hoped to have the gates reinstalled this week.

A war of words erupted at Monday’s meeting of Roscommon County Council after the executive confirmed that a pumping solution was not being considered at Lough Funshinagh.

Independent councillor Ivan Connaughton criticised the local authority’s decision to not seek further expert guidance on pumping as a way of alleviating the ongoing problem.

Cllr. Connaughton informed members that he was willing to arrange for an expert in such matters to provide information on Lough Funshinagh and other flood-affected areas free of charge. He said that there were viable solutions and it was worrying that the executive was not willing to pursue them.

“If an expert was to come in and say that pumping is not viable then that’s grand. It’s a sad situation and we need to get answers. We’re democratically elected and I’m determined to act on the mandate I’ve been given,” he said.

“I’ve never seen someone being refused to bring in an expert free of charge. It’s a disappointing day for me as a councillor. There’s something hiding behind all of this. I think the executive don’t want an expert coming in and saying that this (pumping) is possible”.

However, the council’s Chief Executive, Eugene Cummins, insisted that such a solution was not viable.

“There is no viable pumping solution for Lough Funshinagh and to make it very clear, we

will not be bringing an expert into the chamber to waste members’ or officials’ time,” he said.

Cllr. Connaughton said he would organise a public meeting on the matter, and received support from fellow Independ-

ent, Nigel Dineen, who said it was “beyond belief” that the CEO would seek to ‘prevent’ members hearing from an expert.

Director of Services, Shane Tiernan, was adamant that the executive had heard from experts and said he didn’t want to give residents false hope regarding a pumping solution.

“We have our own expertise.

Pumping four million cubic metres of water is a massive operation and I don’t want to give residents false hope. We want a long-term solution to this and we’ll look to do that as expeditiously as possible,” he said.

Cllr. Tony Ward maintained that an overflow pipe was the only solution and said that the CEO (Mr. Cummins) was “the

only one who got the ball rolling on the issue”.

Cllr. Donal Kilduff said it would be useful to establish what the major obstacle was to a pumping solution.

“I’ve no doubt that it is technically possible. Is the major impediment other factors rather than the technicality of it?”

Cllr. John Naughten said the blame for the current situation at Lough Funshinagh lay fully with the Office of Public Works.

“They’ve washed their hands of it completely,” he said.

Mr. Tiernan added that the flooding at Lough Funshinagh needed “to be handled extremely sensitively” and that he wasn’t prepared to suggest resources were going to be put into a solution that wouldn’t work.

If Ireland can address indiscipline and inconsistency, future can be bright!

A barnstorming win over England on Saturday saw the Irish rugby team end the Six Nations on a high. BILLY HEALY reflects on a campaign which, while marked by inconsistency, holds out the promise of exciting times ahead…

The Ireland rugby team recently finished up their 2021 Six Nations campaign. As Andy Farrell completes his second season as coach of Ireland – succeeding Joe Schmidt – how much progress has he made with this current team?

After a poor start to the Six Nations back in February, losing 21-16 against Wales at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff (after going ahead) and then losing to France by two points (13-15) at the Aviva in Dublin, Ireland bounced back with wins in Rome against Italy (10-48), in Edinburgh against Scotland (24-27), and against England in Dublin last weekend (32-18).

I must admit that personally I was surprised, as were many Irish fans, when

we beat Scotland (by that small margin of three points) and even more surprised when we beat England, especially by such a large points difference. The performance against England came as a total shock to most people. The victories over Italy, Scotland and England were very welcome, coming as they did after those defeats on our opening two match-days. The conclusion that we can draw from this year’s Six Nations is that you just didn’t know what to expect from Ireland. This inconsistency needs to be addressed. I felt we were very unpredictable and in some games we lacked creativity in our plays.

Ahead of this year’s tournament, Farrell brought in former Ireland captain and legend, Paul O’Connell, as forwards coach.

An aspect of our game that was massively improved by O’Connell was our lineouts. This part of our game was hugely improved if you compare it to how we performed in the lineouts in the Autumn Internationals. Ireland won 14 of their opponents’ throws into the lineout in this Six Nations, a remarkable 20% of all opposition throws, leaving them well clear

of second-best Scotland (on 9). Ireland’s aggressive tactics also led to a further opposition handling error in the lineout.

Scotland’s total collapse at the lineout in Murrayfield in round four highlighted Ireland’s ability to cause panic with their aggressive defence, which was enhanced by the quality of O’Connell’s influence.

Ireland won 91% of their own scrums over the course of the tournament and were the only team in the competition not to concede a penalty on their own put-in.

Ireland still have a huge amount of work to do on their strike plays from this strong scrum platform, however. They were the only team in the Six Nations not to score a single try from a scrum this year.

In our defence we showed signs of weakness – for example, the soft try against Italy, where Sexton got disconnected from Furlong, leaving the prop advancing laterally, and Jordan Larmour missed a tackle. Meanwhile, James Lowe made crucial defensive errors against Scotland, which led to him being dropped for the England game the following week.

Our discipline, I thought, was poor. Peter

O’Mahony was handed a three-game ban for his reckless challenge in the opening game v Wales, after just 13 minutes. The experienced flanker charged into Wales’ Tomas Francis with his shoulder. He is the first Ireland player to be sent off in the Six Nations era and only the fifth in our Test history. Bundee Aki was also sent off against England for his challenge on Billy Vunipola. He has received a fourgame ban for his actions. Keeping the penalty count below double figures can go a long way towards winning games, denying the opposition chances to kick into your half and attack or simply kick points, but Ireland just slipped above that marker with an average penalty count of 10.4 (across all five games).

Jonathan Sexton was superb from the tee as he was successful with 25 kicks from 26. Personally I think this team has lot of potential in the next few years, so long as we are more consistent, a bit more creative, and the players continue to gel well as a group. If we can do this, we have a good chance of going far under Andy Farrell.

We have quality players such as Lowe, James Ryan, Jacob Stockdale, Robbie Henshaw, Tadhg Beirne, etc., some of whom have more experience than others.

Tabloid treatment of Knock Shrine was untimely and spiteful on the Roscommon People is that the written word is indeed a powerful thing.

While I most certainly am not a journalist, I would have thought that for any journalist, there should be a point to whatever piece they put into print. What exactly the point was in questioning the authenticity or otherwise of the Knock apparitions beats me. What was the point, after a century and a half, when there is no way of proving the conspiracy theory? On the day after the Church accepted that Knock deserves its international status, was it really necessary to publish such a spiteful article?

Our man Frank on what he considers to be inappropriate tabloid treatment of the Knock Shrine apparition; on becoming a grandfather in a pandemic; and saying a fond farewell to CJ Stander…

The first thing I have to say is that when it comes to religion, I would rate myself a better Christian than a Catholic. While I fully believe there is a God, I’d pray to him in an informal way – more like having a chat with him – and I wouldn’t be the best person in the world for structured prayer.

I go to Mass as often as I can, but could still miss out on the odd Sunday.

However, no matter how good or bad I am, one of the places I have always loved going to is Knock Shrine, a place I find to be so peaceful and soothing. Before Covid, we (Carol and I) would pay at least two or three visits every year to the Mayo village.

Many times over the years in this column I have wondered why Knock wasn’t seen in the same light as Fatima, Lourdes, or Medjugorje, and why foreign pilgrims didn’t flock to it in the same way. But of course one of the reasons was that the Vatican, as head of the Roman Catholic Church,

Last week I wondered about the judgement of some TV producers and directors. Today I wonder do some newspaper editors have the same lack of judgement. Maybe the fact that no one put their name to the piece says it all!

As for me, the minute we get rid of Covid and its horrible lockdowns, I will head back to Knock and once again experience the special spiritual qualities that it has in abundance. Knock’s international recognition is most welcome and long overdue. In future years, it will surely be huge on the international pilgrim tour list.

Grandchild joy still a reminder of life in grip of Covid

didn’t fully acknowledge Knock as an internationally recognised shrine.

That all changed on Friday evening when Pope Francis upgraded the Knock Shrine to international status, a recognition that now places it on the same status as Fatima and Lourdes. After nearly 150 years, it has finally been ratified as a proper Marian Shrine. Presently, up to one and a half million people visit Knock each year, and I imagine those figures will get

even bigger now.

And so, after the huge honour that was bestowed on the Shrine on Friday evening, I wonder why one of the country’s most popular tabloids – the Daily Star – had to run a full-page article with the headline, ‘Was Knock apparition all a hoax?’, on the very next morning.

The article, which was by an unidentified writer, suggested the whole thing was a set-up, organised by the parish priest of the time, involv-

ing the use of a projector and a mirror. The article claims that by positioning them in a particular way, he could project religious images on to the gable wall of the church. When that was done, his housekeeper rounded up a number of locals, brought them to the church, showed them the images which the priest had projected, and when they saw the images, the story of Knock was born.

A great week for Irish sport What a week for Irish sport! We hammered the old enemy, England, in both horse racing and rugby, and in the process gave the whole country a hugely important boost in times of extraordinary hardship and sacrifice.

In Rachael Blackmore, we discovered a new heroine to rank with Katie Taylor, Sonia O’Sullivan and Catherina McKiernan, amongst others. Blackmore made history in a number of ways during her unbelievable Cheltenham performances, culminating in six wins, making her the first ever

female leading festival rider. Her success in such a demanding sport will inspire many young girls to follow their dreams, whatever career they choose.

Then on Saturday, the wheels really came off the English Chariot, as Ireland – inspired yet again by Robbie Henshaw – came up with an unexpected but very deserved victory.

As someone who has admired all the qualities CJ Stander brought to the Irish jersey – despite his being born thousands of miles away in South Africa – I was

delighted to see the team put on such a dominant performance to bring the curtain down on his international career. His emotional reaction at the end said all that needed to be said about his commitment to the Munster and Irish jerseys. I hope the Reds win the PRO14 final against Leinster this weekend, but either way I wish him well in his farming future.

As CJ heads back home to South Africa, I thank him for all the pride and joy he brought to Irish rugby followers over the last number of years.

Last Monday night – or early Tuesday morning to be precise – my wife Carol and I became grandparents. Our daughter Lisa gave birth to baby daughter Riley up in the Rotunda in Dublin, and while we were naturally delighted and overjoyed, it also brought home, in a very personal way, the awful impact Covid has on us all.

For a year now, we have seen how hard it is on relatives when somebody dies, and how sad it is that only a handful of relations can properly say goodbye by attending the funeral. But it is easy to forget (unless you actually live it yourself) how tough it is on hospital patients who cannot receive any visitors, and on people who have relatives in hospital but cannot go to see them.

Last week I met a lady who told me her husband has been in hospital for over a month, and she hasn’t been able to see him since. To bring him in a change of clothes or anything else, she has to put a label on the package with his details on it and hand it in to reception, from where it is delivered to her husband.

For us, we could not visit our daughter or our new granddaughter in the hospital. The only one allowed in was her husband, and that was only from 5 to 7 in the evening. While it was only a minor inconvenience compared to the suffering of some other people, it is nevertheless something we could do without.

I said it last week, but it’s worth repeating – let the government try and speed up the vaccine programme – and hopefully children and grandparents can get to meet again soon.

was bad, you were spared the worst of it. Playing the ball sideways, and backways…I never saw the beat of it!

Yeah, and mind you, the other crowd were no better!

One team as bad as the other…

I thought we’d have a good crack at the intermediate this year…

Not if we keep playing like that!

It was 0-2 to 1-1 at halftime…I just had to go, I was umpire at another

game…

I’m telling you, you missed nothing!

Missed nothing! Can’t say the same for our forwards…

I will say one thing though, the ref gave us nothing…

Ah sure that fella, he’s always the same. He has an awful set on us…

He let one of their fellas take eight steps for that goal, a three-year-old would have disallowed it!

So I missed nothing in the second half?

Oh stop, you and me would have done better ourselves, and we’re retired 20 years!

Did we not bring on any subs?

Stop, will ye! Don’t start me on the management! I never saw the beat of it!

Did we lose by much?

Ah no, we squeezed home by a point. Still, nothing to

A fishy tale (well, not really, well, kind of) There are some wonderful fishing locations in the Roscommon People’s readership area (which, at this point, is Co. Roscommon and a number of adjoining counties).

So we thought readers might be interested to hear of an Inland Fisheries Ireland initiative.

As part of the upcoming Go Fishing Week 2021, the IFI has launched their ‘Why I love to fish’ video competition.

IFI is angling for people in Roscommon and nationwide to submit a short video of their fishing adventures, and to tell them what fishing means to them. Entries are welcome from both individuals and groups, and fishing clubs, youth clubs, centres and projects are all invited to take part.

The competition is open to everyone over 18 years of age. If video includes anyone aged under 16 years of age, only a parent/guardian may submit the content. The overall winner will receive fishing tackle to the value of €100, and there will also be prizes for runners-up and special categories.

Closing date for entries to ‘Why I love to fish’ is Friday, April 9th, 2021. For more information on the competition and how to apply, please visit fisheriesireland.ie/lovefishing.

Many households I’m sure have a collection of odd socks – where the matching one goes remains a mystery. Similarly, I’m sure that many households have pairs of socks where one sock has a hole in the toe or a worn heel. So what are you to do with these?

Instead of contributing to the massive amount of used clothing that goes to landfills every year, why not consider ‘giving the earth a hug’ this April by re-using your old socks.

Here are ten suggestions for re-using the odd or torn sock around the home: 1 Clean up spills in the kitchen.

2 Clean the floors.

3 Clean the windows.

4 Remove make-up/foundation.

5 Applying tan.

6 Put a couple in the car for wiping the windscreen or your hands.

7 Use for bringing in turf.

8 Use when gardening.

9 You can wear odd socks when out walking/jogging (no one will notice!).

10 Make into a ball for the dog to toss around the garden.

Has our government sucked the happiness right out of us?

Each year on March 20th, the world celebrates the ‘International Day of Happiness’, when 149 countries across the globe are ranked according to their individual levels of gross domestic product (GDP), their generosity, their social support and freedom and their life expectancy. We ranked at number 13, with Finland being voted ‘the happiest country in the world’ for the fourth year in a row.

So precisely what is it that makes a Nordic nation, whose winters are hellish, so much happier and less miserable than us lot here in the good auld Emerald Isle?

The answer’s simple… they’ve got a decent government, one that knows

Welcome to summertime, folks!

This Sunday the clocks will go forward, meaning we’ll lose an hour’s kip, but the good news is we’ll gain an hour’s daylight!

Yay! Ah yes, we’ll be able to chat about the “grand stretch” in the evenings, and the “great dryin’ oush”. We can lament that “sure ‘twas only last week ya couldn’t put the foot outside the door after 6 pm for the darkness” and the “shockin’ coowld”, but now, “sure isn’t there a great bit o’ heat in that sun”.

But are we ready for the shift? Will we be able to get the kids to bed at a reasonable hour and is our powerwasher primed and ready to hose down the patio for the annual barbie and drinking outdoors’ fest? You bet we will!

At the time of writing it was reported that there was a total of 229,831 confirmed cases, with, tragically, 4,585 related deaths.

How is it that two countries, both with similar populations, can differ so drastically? Well here’s the thing readers – from March 11th 2020 (the day on which the World Health Organisation (WHO) designated Covid-19 as ‘a global pandemic’), our government appears to have made a right hames of the entire crisis. By failing to see the red flags and missing the gravity of a situation which was, at the time, dubbed by our health experts as ‘nothing we’ve ever seen’, it’s my belief our

government are incapable of leading us safely through this predicament.

In fact, if I were to reflect the mood of our nation, it would be that we’ve now passed the point of accepting both the Taoiseach’s and the Tánaiste’s derisory excuses – one of which is that zero-Covid isn’t a possibility due to our UK border with Northern Ireland.

Well Micheál agus Leo, as I’ve neither the time nor the crayons

to draw you a picture, my short answer to that cop-out would be to make it possible! Find a way!

Think I’m being too hard on the lads? Let me remind readers that exactly one year ago, the regulations we faced were straightforward, and as we were told they’d last for only a few weeks, the good people of Roscommon – in our quest to protect lives – were more than happy to buy into them.

Our seniors and our vulnerable ‘cocooned’, non-essential retail closed, non-urgent healthcare procedures were postponed and our exercise/movements were restricted to 2km, later extended to 5km.

Fast-forward to today and I’d like to ask three questions: what went wrong, how did we end up here, and who’s going to take the blame? Well I can tell you what went wrong, and how we got here – our leaders

cocked it up by refusing to close the borders/airports/ ports, and by opening up the country at Christmas.

However, I don’t know who’s going to be ‘man’ enough to take the blame!

Before Josepha Madigan gets her knickers in a twist, I use that term due to both leaders being male.

However, my point kind of gives credence to the theory that perhaps, like Finland, the Republic of Ireland needs a female Taoiseach (or Prime Minister as the Finns call Sanna Marin). But don’t just take my word for it! Former US President Barack Obama is also of the opinion that women make better leaders, saying “I’m absolutely confident that for two years, if every nation on earth was run by women, you would see a significant improvement across the board on just about everything… living standards and outcomes”.

For the record (and in case you’re ever a contestant on The Chase), Sanna Marin became the world’s youngest Prime Minister at age 34 years in December 2019, just weeks before Covid kicked off! Mic drop!

Why I find Paul Reid’s ‘no choice’ statement unsettling!

It’s clear that vaccination against Covid-19 will be our country’s only way out of this health crisis. Thankfully we currently have three vaccines, all reported to be effective in protecting us against the virus. As we know, in light of a small number of incidents around bleeding and blood clots reported in some who received the AstraZeneca jabs, Ireland temporarily suspended the rollout of this particular vaccine. However, following advice from the National Immunisation Advisory Committee, Ireland has resumed its use, stressing that it remains ‘safe and effective’.

Apparently folks, the benefits of AstraZeneca outweigh the risk of the side effects, and sure why allow a small num-

ber of, let’s say, ‘complications’ derail the rollout, right? However, despite what our health experts claim, there remains a lot of uncertainty and concern among those set to receive their AstraZeneca jabs. As a worrier, I share those concerns.

To be honest, I found HSE CEO Paul Reid’s statement that “there will be no picking and choosing of vaccines” to be quite unsettling and authoritarian, because we all have a right to choose what goes into our bodies. Indeed it’s my belief that if an individual has certain health concerns/allergies/autoimmune disorders, etc., they’re entitled to have a conversation with their doctor, who can best advise on a case-by-case

basis before making an informed decision regarding which particular brand offers them the best outcome.

To that end I found Mr. Reid’s statement to be, well, limiting and confrontational. Maybe the poor man’s fed up facing the cameras every day – who knows!

The Health Products Regulatory Authority assurance that the vaccine ‘will now come with an information leaflet warning of potential rare side effects linked to blood clotting,’ hasn’t gone anywhere near to easing concerns both for me and my loved ones. Therefore when my time comes to get vaccinated, I’ll be doing my own research and having that in-depth conversation with my

own doctor, because at my age, I’ve passed the point of being told ‘you’ll take what you’re given’.

I wear my mask, I socially distance, and I stay home, only leaving for 5km walks and essential items. I follow the rules, the regulations and the restrictions and I haven’t seen/hugged my family in months. You get it – I’m a team player. A law-abiding citizen.

However when it comes to having bodily autonomy, I’m afraid my inner rebel morphs into revolt mode, which is why Paul Reid’s declaration of ‘no choice’ regarding jabs, ‘despite the difference between them’ is causing me a degree of hesitancy and annoyance.

Roscommon’s Covid fightback begins < DAN DOONER

news this week that the county’s Covid-19 Vaccination Centre has officially opened at the Abbey Hotel in Roscommon town, the Roscommon People has launched a ‘Roscommon People Together’ campaign to highlight local positivity in the pandemic!

Prior to the start of vaccinations at the Abbey Hotel on Monday, a programme for the vaccination of frontline healthcare workers had commenced at Roscommon University Hospital on January 6th of this year and within two months, teams from RUH and Community Healthcare West had administered at least one dose of vaccine across all residential facilities in Roscommon and Mayo.

Hooton, says he is “confident that almost all healthcare workers in hospitals have received a first dose of the vaccination and many have now received their second dose”.

The vaccination programme for people aged 16 to 69, who are at very high risk, has now commenced and Ursula Morgan, Director of Nursing at RUH says 1,800 people will have been vaccinated at the Abbey Hotel by the end of this week.

“Here in the new Roscommon Vaccination Centre, staff from Roscommon University Hospital and Community Healthcare West are administering the vaccine and we are currently recruiting additional staff, including vaccinators to ensure that we have the necessary teams in place to deliver the Covid-19 vaccination programme to the people of County Roscommon,” she said.

“We are also very grateful to Tom

and Adrian Grealy and the team at Abbey Hotel for their assistance in getting the Vaccination Centre up and running”.

As vaccinations roll out across the county, the HSE has once again called on the public to play their part in stopping the spread of Covid-19.

With fewer than one hundred residents in older people’s long-term residential facilities waiting on their second dose of the vaccine, there are certainly brighter days ahead.

Chief Officer, Community Healthcare West, Breda Crehan Roche added: “Last week we completed the vaccination roll out to residential service users in disability services, and we plan to vaccinate those attending disability day services in the week commencing March 29th.

“To date, Community Healthcare West has administered 17,671 vaccines”.

L

ike many Roscommon

businesspeople, Athleague publican, Henry Hamrock, has grown increasingly weary of what he describes as the Government’s ‘Lanigan’s Ball’ approach to lockdown restrictions.

“It has been open and close since last March and we’ve been in and out and back out again,” he said.

“We had a fair inkling that something big was happening in early March of last year but we had absolutely no idea of how long it would go on. No-one knew the path we were on but it’s had a huge impact on us here in terms of our full and part-time staff as well as the loss of routine and daily structure”.

Henry has remained active throughout lockdown but says he

misses the daily routine of running Hamrock’s pub.

“Everyone likes a bit of structure and I have been out walking and exercising but miss opening up the bar and meeting the customers and things like that.

“They say you never miss something until it’s gone and that’s definitely the case here. It’s been a long wait and it’s had a severe effect on myself and my wife Liz, who also works full-time at the pub,” he said.

Addressing the difficult challenges posed by Government restrictions, Henry said: “Look, with the best will in the world, we found it challenging at times. I’m sure most publicans found it hard.

“That atmosphere of meeting up with people is part and parcel of the pub trade. Keeping to yourself with social distancing and time limits is important for public health, but it’s not something people would easily get used to, especially in a rural pub,” he said.

As for last year’s stipulation, which required pubs to serve food on site, he added that he didn’t agree with distinguishing between so-called ‘wet’ pubs and those which serve food.

“If we are allowed to open up then we should all open up,” he said, “but I would prefer to see it (a reopening) when the Government and health authorities are comfortable with the case numbers”.

Henry said the closure of the local pub has had a wide-ranging impact on the locality, both from economical and social standpoints, and that it would be a long time before things could ever go back to normal.

“I can see significant measures in place in terms of social distancing for some time to come,” he said.

“But I am looking forward to a return to some sort of normality and welcoming our loyal customers back once again,” he concluded.

‘Keep financial supports going for hospitality sector’ L

ocal businessman and community activist Andrew Reynolds has called on Tánaiste Leo Varadkar to immediately offer “an absolute guarantee of further financial supports to assist those operating in the hospitality sector” until such time as they can safely reopen their businesses once again.

Speaking in response to Mr. Varadkar’s recent comments in which he urged local authorities to “do what they can” for local restaurants and cafes by supporting outdoor seating where possible in towns and cities this summer, Mr. Reynolds said the move “was not enough”.

“As someone who works in the

catering industry – with a significant number of employees – I was deeply disillusioned to see no apparent positive plan of action in place to facilitate cafes with facilities for indoor seating only.

“Now, a year after the first case of Covid-19 hit Ireland, the repercussions have been catastrophic for all businesses, with the tourism industry hit extremely hard. Hotel bookings are down dramatically and many catering companies, restaurants and cafe owners are now either closed or struggling to make ends meet as a result of repeated lockdowns.

“Business owners have already

lost an entire summer of trade and are potentially set to lose another this year as well. This has sadly meant many proprietors have had to close their doors for, I believe, the last time, particularly those in rural Ireland where the local cafe was a point of social contact for so many.

“For this reason, I am calling for further clarity from the Tánaiste on this issue as a matter of urgency and call for this guarantee of further financial supports to assist those of us working in the hospitality sector until such time as we can safely reopen our doors again” Mr. Reynolds concluded.

Styling from home: Nessa adjusts to lockdown life LOCKDOWN LIVES Dan Dooner

T

he outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic affected some business owners more than others. Hair stylist Nessa Sherringham, for example, was left with no other option but to vacate her popular hair salon in Knockcroghery and open up shop – when permitted to do so – at home.

“I remember being in the salon when we first heard that Covid was going to hit Ireland. We had held a hugely successful masterclass just the week before we were told to shut down. I knew very early on that it would be impossible to adhere to social distancing because the salon was so small.

“When the time came to reopen, I decided to move out to my house where I have a purpose-built studio and can work one on one with clients,” she said.

Unsurprisingly, Nessa was devastated to leave her successful salon and hard-working and talented staff behind but Covid had left her no choice.

“We had a very busy salon and stylists working hard with customers coming and going throughout the day, it just wasn’t possible to socially distance without it being one to one.

“Please God when things go back

to normal I’ll be able to go back to how it was before,” she said.

For now though, Nessa’s making the most of her current situation whenever restrictions allow.

“I’m closed for appointments now of course, but when we were allowed to open it was nice that my work was just outside my back door.

It gave me more time at home with my two girls and my husband Liam.

It also meant that I could work the hours that suited me. I work late into the night and that suits my customers who come to me after work,” she said.

Nessa’s daughters, Molly (4) and Katie (3) are delighted to have her home and there have been other benefits too.

“It has given me more time to really look at my business and see how I might improve it. Last Christmas, I launched an online shop at www. thehairlounge.ie and that’s really flying it. I sell hair care products and electrical items like straighteners, etc., as well as vouchers.

“I’ve also been able to go back and do some training online to become a hair educator. I’m doing my exams in that at the moment. I’ve always trained the younger stylists in the salon so it’s something I really enjoy,” she said.

Council, Cllr. Laurence Fallon, officially launched a new ‘Local Authority Customer App’ at Monday’s online monthly meeting of the local authority.

The app was presented by council administrative officer Una Ni Chuinn, who said it would be of “great benefit” to both rates and rents customers going forward.

“Customers will be able to view balances, make rent and rates payments and view their account history,” she said.

Director of Services, Martin Lydon said that the app is already proving popular with customers.

“In mid-February rents and rates

customers were notified about the app. Since then, almost 2,000 people have logged in to use the app indicating that there is a lot of interest from customers in managing their own accounts,” he said.

Roscommon is one of the first counties to use the app and Mr. Lydon said it would make it easier for customers to manage their accounts and household budgets.

“Lots of benefits can be gained from the use of this app not least of which is the convenience and efficiency for customers to have access to their accounts anytime.

“It will also save staff time answering queries about balances and payments. Customers will have their information at their fingertips 24/7 and paperless statements and

instant messaging to customers are among the other features,” he said.

The app was widely welcomed by members at Monday’s council meeting, with Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice saying it would move Roscommon into the digital age and Cllr. Marty McDermott described it as a “forward move”.

ISME and HSA working together in 2021 to support Irish SMEs ISME will partner with the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) in a webinar on workplace safety, health and welfare, and remote working, in the first of a series of events, run in partnership with the (HSA). ISME and the HSA will work together to inform and advise Irish businesses about safety, health and welfare supports with a number of webinars, videos, blogs and online resources in 2021.

The first webinar, which will take place at 11 am on Wednesday, March 31st, will look at workplace safety, health and welfare, and remote working. Joanne Harmon (Business and Education Support Manager with the HSA) will join ISME’s HR Advisor Cait Lynch, answering questions and offering advice and guidance to business owners and managers in order to better understand the requirements for employers under safety, health and welfare law.

Remote working will be a particular focus during the webinar, and responsibilities for both employers and employees will be addressed. The HSA’s Guidance on Working from Home for Employers and Employees will enable employers to understand and plan agreed ongoing remote working arrangements, or blended working arrangements with their employees.

This will be become more important as we emerge from Covid-19 and the economy opens up in the coming months. This guidance and associated resources can be found within a new ‘Remote Working’ area of the HSA website or on ISME’s coronavirus portal.

Farmers encouraged to apply for BEEP-S Scheme IFA Livestock Chairman, Brendan Golden, has encouraged farmers to apply for BEEP-S, which opened recently.

“The announcement by the Department is that BEEPS is an important support for suckler farmers. €40m will be made available in 2021,” he said.

Last year, over 24,000 farmers applied for the scheme: “Suckler farmers are the backbone of our beef industry and IFA continues to look for strong supports for them,” he said.

Brendan Golden said under BEEP–S, participants may be eligible for up to €90 for the first ten suckler cow/calf pairs per herd and up to €80 per pair thereafter, subject to an overall maximum of 100 pairs per herd, if all actions under the scheme are applied for and completed in full.

He reminded farmers that the closing date is Monday, April 26th.

IFO warns forest owners about disposing of harvesting rights The Irish Forest Owners (IFO), a representative body for the majority of forest owner groups in Ireland, has warned private forest owners and their families to exercise caution about selling harvesting rights to their woodlands.

On current prices, the final harvest value of a conifer forest is likely to be in the region of €10,000 to €15,000 per acre and the IFO is concerned that many private forest owners may not realise the true value of their asset.

A number of investment companies are seeking to buy the harvesting rights from private forest owners, offering a lump sum up front with annual payments until clearfell.

Chairperson of the IFO, Nicholas Sweetman, said: “Many landowners have invested in forestry, especially over the last thirty years. Owners should be

cautious of relinquishing the value of their timber mid-way through the life cycle of their trees. They should not become sharecroppers on their own land.

“It is of particular concern that these companies are cherry-picking softwood plantations, that have recently come out of premium payments and that the owners are not being offered the true value of their forest,” he said.

The IFO is recommending that any forest owner considering these offers, get a valuation of their forest from an independent expert: “Forest owners can also benefit from information and support from their local forest owners group, as well as independent advice from their local Teagasc Office”.

Forest owners also need to carefully consider the tax implications of selling their harvesting rights. At

present, there is a favourable tax regime for forest owners, for profits relating to forestry and for the transfer of forestry to the next generation: “It is possible that relinquishing harvesting rights may have unforeseen adverse tax implications for

the landowner and their family. Detailed independent legal and taxation advice is vital,” Mr. Sweetman said.

The carbon embedded in private forests has an important potential value that must also be considered: “The IFO will ener-

getically demand that these values are properly quantified and vested in the forests for the benefit of the owners”.

The IFO will resist any move to place the future of private forestry in Ireland in the hands of a few investment funds.

IFA President Tim Cullinan

IFA President Tim Cullinan said he was very concerned about reports that some larger member states are laying claim to a greater share of the Brexit Adjustment Reserve, which would impact Ireland’s share.

“The Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney confirmed that Ireland was to receive just over €1 billion from the initial allocation when he spoke at our North Tipperary AGM in January. This allocation reflects the exposure of this country, and in particular our agri-food sector, to the fallout from Brexit,” he said.

“Ever since the vote in 2016, it has been acknowledged that Ireland would take the biggest hit from the UK decision to leave

the EU. Therefore, it follows that we should be in line for the largest amount from the Brexit compensation fund”.

Tim Cullinan said the Irish Government and our full-time representation in Brussels have to take a stand and ward off any attempt to deny our sector muchneeded funding. He said IFA’s work on securing a significant portion of Ireland’s allocation has been based on the amount announced in January, and we would be proceeding on that basis.

“The solidarity that existed for Ireland during the tortuous talks that brought an agreement on trade in December has to remain in place,” he said.

Mr. Golden said numbers are tight, the UK supplies are predicted to be down 5% this year and beef sales in supermarkets continue to show both volume and value growth. Prices in the UK are strengthening.

“Easter will increase demand in supermarkets and the gradual re-opening of the food service sector as vaccinations are rolled out will further increase demand for beef,” he said.

The latest Prime Export Benchmark price shows continued growth in our key markets for beef, rising by a further 1c/kg to €3.83/kg. The Irish Prime Composite price rose by 2c/kg for the same period to €3.71/kg. The IFA Livestock Chairman said this still leaves an unacceptable price gap of 12c/kg, which must be closed.

The IFA Livestock Chairman said factories have no excuses left. The uncertainty of access issues to the UK market has been removed, demand is strong and prices are rising across

our key markets. He said factories are paying €3.80/ kg for steers, up to €3.90/ kg for heifers and are prepared to do deals for larger numbers above these levels including paying increased breed bonuses.

Young bulls are making €3.70/kg to €3.95/kg, cows are making €3.00/kg to €3.50/kg depending on grade.

He said farmers should demand immediate price increases to reflect the strength of the market, the removal of Brexit uncertainty, and the growing demand for beef.

Roscommon MART WATCH There were increased numbers on offer this week with a firm trade for all stock. Bullocks averaged from €2.32 per kilo up to €2.66 per kilo.

Heifers ranged from an average of €2.36 per kilo up to €2.96 per kilo.

Dry cows made from an average of €1.89 up to €2.25 per kilo. Bidding was brisk with more buyers anxious for stock resulting in a good clearance of lots.

This Friday (26th), the mart will host a special sale of bullocks and a special sale for breeding heifers.

There was a good entry of Weanlings on offer at our sale on Tuesday last with a firm trade. There was a full clearance of weanlings bulls with prices ranging from an average of €2.34 per kilo up to €3.08 per kilo. Weanling heifers fetched from an average of €2.54 per kilo up to €3.37 per kilo with the majority of lots sold.

Next weanling sale: Tuesday, March 30th. Bookings accepted up to 5 pm today (Thursday 25th).

There was a larger entry of sheep on offer at Wednesday’s sale with an improvement in trade for hoggets and cast ewes. Spring lambs made up to €187 for 45.3kgs.

Finished hoggets made up to €177 for 72.7kgs and stag ewes made up to €158. There was also a large entry of in-

lamb ewes and ewes with lambs at foot.

Please note all sheep must be tagged with a full yellow EID Tag set. Next Online Sheep Sale for lambs and cast ewes is on Wednesday, March 31st at 11 am. Yard opens at 8 am and all stock must be penned by 10 am.

Harkin: ‘Ease restrictions on county-by-county basis’ Independent TD Marian Harkin has suggested that in the context of the most recent Covid figures, an easing of Covid-19 restrictions on a county-by-county basis would be appropriate.

“NPHET and the Government should consider relaxing Covid restrictions on a county basis in counties where the fourteen-day incidence rate is low – for example below 50 per 100,000, or below 100 per 100,000, depending on the scientific analysis”, she stated.

“I am not speaking about a full relaxation of restrictions, rather a certain flexibility around travel within their own county, around training or individual sporting activity outside, and around some re-opening of places of worship.

People need hope. People need to have something they can work towards. People need a timeline of some sort.

“Counties like Leitrim have the lowest fourteen-day incidence rate per 100,000 in the country, at 34.

Kilkenny and Cork are also below 50 per 100,000. These statistics need to be taken into consideration when NPHET and the Cabinet review Covid restrictions post April 5th”.

She said the overall mood had changed for many people: “Throughout Covid, I have received emails, calls and texts from people, but the tone has changed in the last few weeks. More and more people are becoming desperate to see a pathway towards a

new normal. We have been locked down since Christmas, and some people are very close to breaking point. For too many, especially young people, their mental health is deteriorating.

“I am not blaming the Government or NPHET for the current situation, and I understand we are still in the middle of a pandemic, but our response to current restrictions needs to be measured and it needs to be proportionate,” she said.

Vaccine more prevalent than information on roll out – Denis Naughten Independent TD Denis Naughten has asked An Taoiseach Micheál Martin to intervene to ensure that housebound older people are told when they can expect to receive the Covid-19 vaccine through the National Ambulance Service.

“On 11th March the National Ambulance Service started the Covid vaccination of housebound patients around the Dublin area. A week later the HSE informed us that 300 of the estimated 1,500 people nationally that are housebound had been vaccinated,” Deputy Naughten said.

“We are now starting into the third week of the vaccination programme for housebound older people and I cannot find out when housebound people in the West of Ireland will be vaccinated. Health management locally don’t know, and the patients’ GPs don’t have any idea either.

“Not only are housebound older people a high-risk cohort but in many instances, they have a rota of carers going into their home, which exposes them to even greater risk”.

The Taoiseach gave Deputy Naughten a commitment that he would ask the HSE to provide these vulnerable people with an indication as to when they can expect to be vaccinated.

“This is the very least that we should expect with regard to this rollout,” added Denis Naughten.

“While I fully understand the vaccination programme is dependent on the delivery of vaccine into the country, that is no reason why the public should be denied access to information on the actual roll-out of the vaccination programme,” he concluded.

Kerrane: Minster won’t commit to Community Employment extension Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has said that participants on all job activation schemes, including Community Employment, who have lost out on so much due to Covid-19 should be provided additional time on schemes.

However, speaking following a committee meeting on Tuesday

evening last, Kerrane said: “I asked Minster O’Brien to allow for extensions for all current participants on schemes like Community Employment, Tús, the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance among others given the impact of Covid on their time on these schemes.

“Minister O’ Brien confirmed

that in cases where participants won’t have time to complete particular training and have to exit the scheme, they will be facilitated as best as possible through engagement an Intreo case officer. This is a really disappointing response from the Minister.

“We hear much platitudes for

schemes like Community Employment yet, when it comes to supporting and assisting participants, it’s not there.

“Participants on these schemes have lost out through no fault of their own and the Minister should acknowledge this and allow additional time”.

Update sought on acceleration of National Broadband Plan Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has asked Minister for Communications, Eamon Ryan, for an update on the Government’s commitment in the Programme for Government to accelerate the roll-out of broadband in rural Ireland.

Speaking on Wednesday, Deputy Kerrane said: “The roll-out of broadband right across the State has always been a hugely important and major project to be undertaken. However, Covid-19 has made its need far greater and even more urgent.

“Workers and families have faced great difficulties when it comes to remote learning from primary school children right up to those at third level as well as those who overnight, had to begin working from home. The need for reliable and high speed broadband is critical for homes and for businesses and Covid shone a spotlight on the lack of it in many areas.

“The Programme for Government commits to accelerate the roll-out of broadband and this is something that must be delivered. On seeking an update from the Minister, I understand that National Broadband Ireland (NBI) have established a team to investigate the acceleration of the roll-out from its current contracted schedule of seven years. NBI are engaging with current build partners, both Eir and Enet, to bring forward build activities and are reviewing other possible build partners such as the ESB where such options could speed up the build process.

“We must ensure that all resources are acquired and put to use to ensure that the National Broadband Plan is rolled out far quicker than seven years”.

Local reaction to revised Climate Action Bill < DAN DOONER

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy described the revised Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Bill, which was passed on Tuesday, as an ambitious plan and a new departure in Government ambition.

He said: “It is an ambitious plan but we have to tackle the growing problem of climate change, we simply have no choice and I believe farmers and landowners can be part of the

solution in rural Ireland and can only gain by following this pathway.

“Our farmers have shown leadership in this area and I believe that they will continue to do so”.

Senator Murphy said that the Government would be to the fore in meeting the challenge of getting to net zero emissions by 2050 across a range of actions on housing, planning, marine and natural heritage protection, and analysis of Ireland’s climate.

However, Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice believes the people of Ireland need to wake up to the consequences of the amended Bill.

“Let no-one be codding themselves in this country; but under this new Climate Action Bill, we are putting ourselves in real danger of getting rid of jobs and turning the lights out.

“In this country at the moment we are importing biomass from as far away as South Africa. In some data centers, fuel is being brought in by

the truckload – from abroad – as the electricity suppliers here cannot guarantee power.

“The fact of the matter is that the Ireland of the future that the dreamers are talking about will need 50% more electricity than we do at the moment.

“We are now gone down the road of jeopardising growing businesses and presenting a real possibility of the lights being turned off as we won’t have enough power. This happened recently in Germany, but they are

taking action to rectify it.

“If the Irish people accept this, then large swathes of the country will be turned into theme parks.

“I would urge all in opposition to row in against this fantasy bill which the Green Party have drawn up in a delusional world and that (An Taoiseach Micheál) Martin and (An Tánaiste Leo) Varadkar – for the sake of power and not facing the electorate – are swallowing hook, line and sinker,” he concluded.

To our good friend Fr. Donal Morris who was a pillar to all of us during those difficult weeks. His visits to Billy and his celebration of Mass at the Galway Clinic when Billy was very unwell was a great comfort to all of us.

To Billy’s close friend Fr. Ultan Naughton who made daily contact with both Billy and our family, all of which was very much appreciated. To Sr. Gabriel Mee whose energy and positive outlook gave us all hope.

To the wonderful Homecare Team at Mayo Roscommon Hospice who allowed Billy to be in the comfort of his own home for the final two weeks of his life. This meant so much to both Billy and the family. Without them this would not have been possible.

Sports PEOPLE Henshaw stars as Ireland stun England Robbie Henshaw put in a barnstorming man of the match performance as Ireland demolished England 3218 in the final round of this season’s Guinness Six Nations championship played at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The fancied visitors put Ireland under early pressure, and seemed to target Henshaw (who was playing at outside centre on this occasion) with their restarts, but they found the Buccaneers clubman defiant and inspirational as he fired up the hosts.

His immense contribution, in which he made ten carries (the most of the game), earned the Athlonian a well overdue and richly warranted man of the match accolade.

Tadhg Beirne was again magnificent

in the pack, where CJ Stander put in another serious shift, dominating the gainline in his 51st and final outing for his adopted country. The win gave the popular South African an appropriate send-off, which came despite Bundee Aki somewhat harshly incurring a red card midway through the second half.

On his 99th appearance, a driven Jonathan Sexton continued to roll back the clock as he dictated matters at fly-half, as well as being spot on once more with his place-kicking. He scored 22 points with a 100% success rate from his eight kicks at goal. This brings his international points tally to 925. Another veteran to defy the clock was Keith Earls, who again demonstrated his lethal finishing against last season’s World Cup finalists.

Tadhg Furlong, with the benefit now of a few games under his belt, is regaining the form that made him a fearsome front-rower. He will surely be a cert for inclusion, as will Henshaw and Beirne, when the British and Irish Lions squad is named in the near future. Ireland could have a healthy contingent when and wherever the Lions square up to world champions South Africa.

Robbie has been Ireland’s stand-out performer during this sometimes frustrating Six Nations campaign. Everyone at Buccaneers RFC is justifiably proud of the unassuming Coosan man’s displays. The GAA is hopeful that a return to training will be permitted when the Government makes its latest statement on the Covid restrictions next Tuesday.

Despite a stall in the reduction of case numbers, the association say that they are cautiously optimistic that outdoor

training for younger age groups will get the green light.

Outdoor training for adults and youths in pods of less than 15 has been sanctioned in Northern Ireland from the 12th of April.

Roscommon’s senior football team manager Anthony Cunningham regards the lack of clarity on any possible return

to training as very unhelpful. He says he is hopeful that inter-county training will resume after Easter, but is frustrated at the lack of communication from the GAA or the Government on the matter.

The late PJ McGrath The death has taken place of former Chairman and President of the Mayo County Board and former President of

the Connacht Council, PJ McGrath at the age of 79.

A retired teacher (at St. Colman’s College, Claremorris), he played for Mayo in the 1960s before going on to become both a well-known match official and administrator.

His most famous match as a referee was Kerry’s attempt on the five-in-a-row in

1982 when they were beaten by Séamus Darby’s late goal for Offaly. A year later he took charge of one of the most famous All-Ireland semi-finals in which Dublin beat Cork after a replay in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. He was President of the Connacht Council from 1994 to 1996 and contested the GAA presidency in 2002, losing out to Seán Kelly.

The Willie Mullins’ trained Gallopin Des Champs won the finale the Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle for conditional jockeys with Sean O’Keeffe doing the steering. Langer Dan finished runner-up and Joseph O’Brien’s Flouer was third, beaten 2 ¼ l and 9l.

The closing double was enough to give Mullins the leading trainer award over de Bromhead on a countback, seven seconds, with both finishing on six winners. The final score in the Prestbury Cup was 23 to Ireland and 5 to Britain, two of them won by a short head. Rachael Blackmore won the leading rider award with six winners, more than Britain’s total of five.

Now to Fairyhouse and the Irish Grand National 3rd to 5th of April, then on the 8th of April Aintree starts for three days, the Grand National minus Tiger Roll who we hopefully might see in the Aintree Bowl, then, and The Punchestown Racing Festival 27th April to 1st May where we will see more of our star national hunt performers, human and equine, in action.

By April 5th, golf courses in the Republic of Ireland will have been closed for 27 weeks over the past 12 months, which is the longest period of closure for the game in any country in the world.

Rossies in action for Connacht Former Roscommon county minor footballer Niall Murray started and played the entire game as Connacht lost by 41 points to 36 to Scarlets in their final PRO14 game of the season on Monday night.

Murray started in the second row.

Jack Carty came on in the 60th minute (at out-half) and kicked a late penalty. Connacht finished second on the table in Pool 2 to Munster, who play Leinster in the PRO14 final this weekend.
