PAUL HEALY Shock over the ordeal endured by a woman in her 90s and her two sons during a harrowing burglary in Ballintubber in the early hours of Monday morning is now turning to anger, with one local TD calling for the “thugs” responsible to be “made an ex ampleRoscommon-Galwayof”. Indepen dent TD, Michael Fitzmaurice, said: “The perpetrators of this heinous crime must be brought to justice. No stone should be left unturned in the investigation to identify these thugs”. The investigation is ongoing this week with Gardaí in Cas tlerea anxious to hear from any one who can assist them.

That’s it, I knew it…we’re goners! Huh? At least we know now…there’s nothing worse than false hope! It’s the hope that kills you! WHAT are you on about? That first week was bad enough…I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t eat, I could hardly muster the energy to take an inter est in the big issue of the past fortnight… What big issue? The FBI raid on Trump’s house? Well, I actually meant that story about the guy who got a tattoo of Marty Whelan’s face on his leg… Oh dear! I know, strange move…even though Marty’s great. Anyways, point is, at least we know now…but it’s still devastating! We know WHAT now?! That we’re goners. That first week was bad, you were away for most of it, we didn’t really get a chance to talk, except for those tense text exchanges with you… Oh that! I just told you to relax… But the second week, that’s done it! Well… Well nothing! That first week…I fol lowed my usual routine on the Thursday. I popped into a local shop and joined the familiar frenzied queue for the Roscom mon People… Yeah, so you said…in your frenzied texts… Just imagine my shock when I turned to page 2! I know, you said… NOTHING! No Barstool Boyos! It’s like we’d been wiped off the face of the earth! Instead of where you and I normally are…a regular news story! That’s an image I thought I’d never be confronted with! Apparently that’s what Marty Whelan said when he saw his face tattooed on yer man’s leg… You’re trivialising this! You KNOW I was shocked! Sorry…but you probably should have con tacted the Editor for clarification… I tried, but he wouldn’t return my calls! Typical Editor… Then, week two. LAST THURSDAY. Not helped by your apparent indiffer ence – and the Editor having gone to ground – I raced into a local shop… Yeah… …checked page one to see if there was a blurb announcing that he’d finally signed up Joe Brolly… Ahem… …turned to page 2…and the final proof. Devastating. No Barstool Boyos for the second week in a row. We’re dropped. It’s over. Ruthless! Well… Well nothing! Either we’ve both been ruthlessly dropped or – even worse – you and Brolly are being lined up to replace you and me! Relax, my friend! You must know by now that I have a hotline to the Editor… Mmnn… The reason our column didn’t appear for two weeks is very simple: I get the content to the Editor, he does his thing…but he was on holidays for two weeks! We’re back… this week! PHEW! What a relief. I’m ecstatic! He reassured me that our absence for two weeks was merely holiday-related…mind you, he did make one strange comment… Huh? He said we’re like that tattoo of Marty Whelan’s face… What? Distinguished, irresistible and timeless? No…just quite hard to get rid of!

Bernie’s fiancé John Donnelly, who hails from Fourmilehouse and plays football with Kilbride, received his fair share of praise and good-natured ribbing on social me dia on Tuesday night. Host Dáithí was keen to know how long it took John to pop the question ahead of the couple’s De cember wedding while the camera appeared to catch Bernie’s father Michael offering a look of disap proval as John appeared on screen. The Roscommon People under stands however that John is firmly in the Ryan family’s good graces! Meanwhile, Eimear Naughton’s fiancé and Colombian native, José, appeared in a gushing video message which was played live during the Queensland Rose’s ap pearance. Eimear may have been reduced to tears but Dáithí was impressed with José’s smooth way with words.

Tuesday’s final night also featured a live performance from Dublin band Wild Youth while Dáithí was ably assisted by fellow presenters James Patrice and Will Leahy. The festival came to an end amid emotional scenes as Westmeath’s Rachel Duffy beat the odds to win this year’s title. But while they may have come up just short on the judges’ scorecards, the Roscom mon, Queensland and London Roses did their respective Rose Centres and the county very proud with their on-stage appearances on Tuesday night.

Roscommon Rose Bernie Ryan may not have captured the Inter national Rose of Tralee title on Tuesday night at the Kerry Sports Academy, but she certainly cap tured the hearts of many of those watching on following her live interview with presenter Dáithí Ó Sé.While Westmeath Rose Rachel Duffy (24) was announced as the deserving winner, Bernie was described as a “breath of fresh air” on social media and received widespread praise for her sense of humour and for demonstrating CPR in the ‘talent’ section of her interview.Bernietravelled to Tralee with plenty of support, and her fam ily and friends made themselves heard in the ‘Dome’ on Tuesday night. There had been a large Roscommon contingent in the Kerry town throughout the Rose Festival as two other Roses also have local Queenslandconnections.RoseEimear Naugh ton, who wowed the audience with a poem about homesickness, is originally from Athleague. She impressed the judges and those watching on as she told Rose of Tralee host Dáithí Ó Sé about her life as a teacher in Brisbane. Hayley Reynolds (28) was this year’s London Rose, and her father Martin hails from Strokestown. Hayley said she had spent the first three years of her life in Crickle wood but now lives in St. Alban’s, Hertfordshire where she works as a personal trainer and is a member of the St. Colmcille’s GAA Club.

A column by Roscommon People editor paul@roscommonpeople.ie

Monday Many readers will be familiar with the hit Channel 4 TV programme ‘Escape to the Chateau’…in which Dick, Angel and family restore a dilapidated 19th century French chateau and transform it into a wedding venue (and their family home). When Fiona discovered that the chateau was only half an hour from where we were staying, we had to investigate. “It will be surrounded by high walls” I predicted, but much to our delight you could drive right up to the start of the avenue and view the magnificent fairytale-like property. A sign at the entrance welcomes callers (inviting people to take photos) while naturally asking for the family’s privacy to be respected. In the distance, I saw a man gardening and thought ‘I bet that’s Dick himself’. When he suddenly waved at me, I waved back.

On closer analysis I realised it was a gardener and he hadn’t been waving; he was throwing something into a trailer. C’est la vie, I suppose. Tuesday Sitting outside a small café in Mayenne. The waiter is a cheerful chap. The weather is in the early 30s, both glorious and taxing. Our drinks and ice cream are very welcome. A wasp goes into my ear but leaves as quickly (that was the last I heard of him; sorry).

Five or six gregarious locals make a great fuss over a very big dog, one of the party popping into the café and returning with a bowl of water for said guest of honour. When I go in to pay, Cheerful Waiter introduces me to Less Cheerful Barman, who offers a halfhearted ‘Bonjour’. While Cheerful Waiter is totting our bill, I spot an elderly man alone in the centre of the café, dressed like a sheriff Dick and Angel not waiting to welcome us in to their fabulous home (of Channel 4 ‘Escape to the Chateau’ fame). Oh well, maybe next time.

“Bonjour, avez-vous quelque chose pour brûlures d’estomac?” (“Good day…have you anything for burnt stomach?”). She hasn’t (smiles and points). That’s when I realise it’s a parfumerie (perfume store)…not a pharmacy. Sunday Today, in extreme heat, we stopped at an attractive café/ restaurant, hoping to get a quick bite to eat/cool drinks. There were four of us. We ordered three starters from the menu, plus one kid’s portion, plus four drinks, plus a coffee, and also pinpointed desserts. The waitress smiled as she accepted the order. Two minutes later, the chef/owner suddenly arrived, apologised, but explained “It is not enough…I have staff to pay!” Apparently our order was of insufficient scale. Did we want to order more, he wondered. Verdict: Nah. I pledge to send our new friend a link to the best of Fawlty Towers.

PAUL

An update on my holiday reading: I actually read six books (I know, but I was really fired up for a get-away-from-it-all reading blitz). Here’s a quick rundown on my very random reads, in case it helps any readers.

5: The Evenings. One of our daughters bought this Dutch classic from the 1940s in a shop in Galway. I’d never heard of the book or its author (Gerard Reve). I was very near to abandoning this unusual book, but stuck with, and am glad I did. It’s the story of how a young man with a very dark sense of humour spends his evenings in the suburban streets of Amsterdam. It was strange, sometimes even disturbing, but hilarious too. A book I’ll never forget.

2: Kiss Me Like A Stranger. I bought the late, great Gene Wilder’s autobiography in a bookstore in Boston a number of years ago, and was so looking forward to reading it, I almost didn’t want to (because then I could no longer look forward to doing so). It didn’t disappoint.

6: ‘And Away’. The one I was most looking forward to. The autobiography of comedian/actor Bob Mortimer. I wasn’t the greatest fan of his surreal TV work with Vic Reeves (even though I get that type of humour), but Bob has found a whole new following through his epic appearances on Would I Lie To You? in recent years (check them out on YouTube).

4: ‘Walking with Ghosts’. I bought this in Galway some months ago, after staring at it for about ten minutes. I couldn’t resist, as the reviews of Gabriel Byrne’s book were so glowing. Also, I was interested as the actor’s late mother was a native of Elphin, Co. Roscommon. Sadly, Elphin doesn’t even get a mention, but his mum (Eileen Gannon) is probably the key figure in this superbly well written memoir.

HEALY’S WEEK

Friday We’ve long rejected lazy stereotypes about the French. Veteran visitors to France by now, we love the country, and generally find the people very friendly. The campsites are fabulous, with great on-site facilities, and are particularly suitable for families with young children. (Later during our holiday we spent a few nights in one of our favourite such locations, Château de LezEaux, outside Granville, which is highly recommended).

Thursday There follows… a ‘Kind of French holiday diary’. It’s mostly my people watching musings (the days referenced are approximate). Alternatively, we could call it ‘Escape from Boris, Robert Troy, the Marty Whelan tattoo, the Healy-Raes, Budget talk and heatwave hysterics’…. The 19-hour sailing from Dublin Port to France on the WB Yeats was very relaxing. As I’ve written here before, the facilities on these ships are generally excellent, with restaurants, bars, a cinema, kids’ club, shop, and of course ensuite cabins in which to be gently rocked to sleep. Thursday evening I’ve brought a selection of books, as I only get time (or find the discipline) to read when on holidays. I’m trying to read book one, but the young duo (I’d say ‘couple’ would be premature) sitting across from us in The Maud Gonne Bar & Lounge are quite annoying. She’s from Belgium, he’s Irish. While she chatters animatedly, the guy – who sports a hairstyle that would remind you of Miley in Glenroe – operates to a completely different pace. In fact he looks like he could do with being charged up every hour or so. They’re grand, but very giddy. He pops to the bar, and there’s respite from the non-stop chatter. Later, they wander off. Gonne but not forgotten. I return to my book. Friday Docking in Cherbourg at 11 am, we take the three-hour drive to the village of Chailland. The weather is beautiful, the French countryside spectacular, with colourful cornfields knitting the villages together (we try to avoid motorways). The friendly son of the landlady welcomes us at the house we’re renting. A very old former family home, the property was recently modernised, and is beautiful. Our host shows us around and reveals there’s a complimentary bottle of wine and six eggs in the fridge. He doesn’t say where the wine came from, but does inform us that the eggs came direct from his grandparents’ hens, who are scurrying around outside (the hens). The village is very picturesque, the streets quaint, the buildings featuring those charming shutters outside the windows. Chailland is located in a valley, and shadowed by spectacular rock face. Large statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary have been erected on a mountain which is a backdrop to an old church. The River Ernée peacefully flows through the village. Saturday I’ve had some heartburn, and so on our drive today I’m on the lookout for a pharmacie. It will be my first proper interaction with a French person on this trip, so I’ve already checked online what I need to say. In the lovely town of Fougères, I step into the pharmacie and approach the lady behind the counter, confident that this won’t be awkward.

Saturday Our two weeks (I skipped a few days) have flown by, and we’re back on Irish soil. Stalled at traffic lights in Dublin, I suddenly notice that the cheerful taxi driver across from me is…having a shave while waiting for the lights to turn green. Yep, he’s shaving away, smiling too. Bare-faced cheek(s).

06 Roscommon People Friday 26 August 2022 from the old (wild) west. He’s sitting there, in waistcoat, hat, trousers and boots, badges, holster, the lot. He has his back to a fireplace and is staring straight ahead. When I pay our bill, adding a reasonable tip, Cheerful Waiter suddenly turns into a showman, exclaiming ‘Beep! Beep!’, striking up some music, high-fiving Less Cheerful Barman, and wishing me well. On my way out, I throw a final glance at the Sheriff, confident that drawing of pistols will not be required.

3: Unusually for me, I switch to fiction. But I love the late William Trevor’s writing. He once lived in County Roscommon (as a boy). ‘Other People’s Worlds’ is a clever, superb novel about the impact a conman has on a number of people he crosses paths with.

1: The Accidental Footballer. This is the biography of slightly eccentric former Everton and Chelsea footballer (and music fan) Pat Nevin, who is a regular on Newstalk’s Off The Ball. It was an enjoyable read about a quirky and likeable guy.

The exhibition on show included a number of old local publications, photos and newspaper clippings. The society’s new publication, The Tulsk Morning Howl, was also launched, and is now available for free pick-up in the local shops. Tea and coffee was also served on the day, and all in all a great afternoon was had.

Comfort Care Treats Fund (CCTF) Vol unteer Helen Raftery Dunne has extend ed a most sincere thank you to Marie Hession, Transition Year Co-ordinator at Glenamaddy Community School, who facilitated the TY students, espe cially Jessica, Jake and Sean, in their recent fundraising of €400 towards the Comfort Care Treats Fund (CCTF) for Roscommon University Hospital Men tal Health Unit patients.

The open day featured an accompanying exhibition and slideshow, which demonstrated the work the so ciety has been putting in since its inception in March last year. There was a great turnout on the day, with the nice weather being an added bonus. One of the event’s highlights was the unveiling of the new cemetery directory. The society established an aim some months ago to unveil the directory dur ing Heritage Week, and were able to successfully make this deadline thanks to the great effort and commitment put in by a number of volunteers. The directory is in place to help all those visiting the local cemetery locate any grave they wish to find. The cemetery directory was officially unveiled at 12.30 pm by Councillor Liam Callaghan, following a very informative introduction by Cathal McCor mack, who gave some well-deserved thanks to the many volunteers and society members that contrib uted to the cemetery survey which formed the basis for the directory. Councillor Callaghan was also on hand to cut the ribbon at Macra Hall an hour later. Noel Sheerin con ducted a talk at the Hall, which included local history reminiscences as well as describing the work THS are doing, and this was both enjoyable and insightful.

11Roscommon People Friday 26 August 2022

12 Roscommon People Friday 26 August 2022 NewsPeople FRANK BRANDON FRANK BRANDON’S unique take on life ... ‘Till next week, bye for now A sporting ‘debut’ as I saddle up for a first visit to the Dublin Horse Show Our man Frank on a memorable first visit to the Dublin Horse Show; In praise of the return of cash at the GAA turnstile…and his dismay at two tainted sporting reputations…

It’s sad to see two very different sportsmen making headlines for all the wrong reasons. First was multi-millionaire and ex-Manchester United super star Ryan Giggs, who is on trial for alleged controlling and coercive behaviour against his former girlfriend Kate Greville. Whatever the verdict, his previously amazing legacy is in tat ters.Then, closer to home, there is the European Champion boxer Gabriel Dossen, who lives in Galway. At the age of 22, he finds himself charged with possession of drugs for sale or sup ply, and he is in danger of ruining a promising boxing career. For Dossen, it may not be too late to get his life and career back on track – and hopefully he will – but for Giggs, the damage has been done. All of us who still support Manchester United will never see him again in the same light as before. Being a sports star and a role model carries a lot of responsi bility – and Gabriel Dossen would do well to remember that.

Cash move is just the ticket…

It’s a known fact that the Irish love their dogs and horses, but I have to admit that when I was a young lad I had no great interest in either species. This was until the early 1960s, before I was yet in my teens, when the exploits of Tipperary showjumper Tom my Wade and his diminutive horse, Dundrum, electrified the nation, awakening in me an interest in showjumping that lives on to this day. Standing just fifteen hands high, Dundrum was small by international standards, and yet he won every type of competition – from speed classes to the Puissance (in case you don’t know, that’s basically jumping over a huge wall). In 1963, the pair made history by winning all five in ternational classes in the Dub lin Horse Show. On top of that, they were part of the winning Aga Khan team in 1963, feats no one has come close to in the nearly 60 years since. From that time on, the Aga Khan competition became an absolute must-see. No matter where I was, I would always make every ef fort to get to some television set somewhere to watch one of the most exciting sporting events in the world. Some years later, the magi cal team of Eddie Macken, Paul Darragh, Captain Con Power and James Kernan did the three-in-a-row, win ning the Aga Khan trophy for Ireland in 1977, 1978, and 1979. Granard native Eddie Macken in particular became a household name, and for a long time was probably our biggest international sports star.However, as with every thing, time passed, and while I managed to get to All-Ire land finals, rugby and soc cer internationals and other big sporting events over the years, somehow I never got to the Dublin Horse Show until this year.

While waiting for Tara’s jump-off, we found ourselves in the main arena watching the Aga Khan competition, and I have to say the atmos phere was every bit as good as I hoped it would be. When Ireland won the trophy in a jump-off, the roof nearly lift ed off the stadium, such was the extraordinary explosion of sound!The funny thing about the RDS is that the main arena where the big international competitions take place is only a tiny part of the whole complex, which is absolutely massive. The crowd you see on the TV is only a small per centage of the total number in attendance. Everywhere you went, there were throngs of people. I lost count of the number of bars, shops sell ing machinery and equestrian stuff, fast food, hot drinks and ice cream trucks – there was even a Tiernan Gill Driving School shop. High prices The one common denomi nator across the RDS’s food and drink sector were the ex tremely high prices. A takea way fish and chips was an eye-watering €17.50! A friend

Tara Brandon pictured at the Dublin Horse Show last weekend in a plastic container was about €7. Accommodation was also ridiculously dear; people we met told us they were paying €1,700 for a four-night hotel stay in one room, without any break fast.Another lad told us he got an awful shock when he or dered two ham and cheese toasties to be delivered to his room. The cost came to €35 – €30 for the two sand wiches and €5 for bringing them up the stairs. The poor fellow was so shocked by the price he nearly choked on the However,food!cost or no cost, it certainly didn’t seem to affect the crowds. The truth is we had a fantastic time, topped off by the fact that Tara had such a good show and that Ireland won the Aga Khan trophy. As they hadn’t won it since 2015, maybe I brought them a slice of luck – God knows I wouldn’t have afforded a slice of toast or apple pie. Anyway, as with any sport, it’s all finished up for the year now. If you want to be back again next year, you have to go through the very arduous process of qualifying again. Only the very top few in the different categories make it there, so here’s hoping Tara makes it back again – and if she does, please God we will too.

of mine told me he was charged €19 for the same thing in Dingle last week, but at least he was in a pub and got a table and chair to sit at. Our fish and chips was strictly takeaway, and we had to look for somewhere to eat it. I didn’t venture to any of the bars, but I believe the price of a pint

Back in the 1970s, my nowwife Carol Kelly had a very successful showjumping ca reer. She managed to qualify for the ponies and junior sections and win them at the RDS. This year, our daughter Tara followed suit, qualifying for the finals of the amateur showjumping competition. And so we headed off on Friday morning by rail to sup port her in the finals, where she jumped three wonderful rounds and finished in a high ly creditable seventh place. She had earlier won a loose jumping competition with a three-year-old horse that she bred herself, so it was a very successful trip to Dublin as winning a place in the RDS is an incredible achievement.

It’s now Saturday afternoon, and after a very early trip to the RDS, we are hitting for home in the comfort of the Dublin-Westport train, arriving back in Roscommon at half past two. I am rushing because Creggs are playing Kilmore in the second round of the Intermediate Cham pionship, and I want to be there to support our team. Two weeks ago, I wrote about the fact that it’s unfair that you have to book your tickets online to get into all local championship matches. Since then, a lot of slightly older people had contacted me to say they agreed with me on that point, and also about the fact that there is still no reduction on admis sion prices for OAPs. However, I was glad to hear on Saturday evening that in Creggs you could get in by paying cash. I’m not sure if that was an official policy change or just a local initia tive, but either way it was a very welcome one. I don’t know if there was also a pen sioner reduction in operation, but at least the cash payment option made life a lot easier for some of us older folk. The other good news is that Creggs won the tough, competitive game by four points! It’s the first time I ever remember us beating the Kilmore men in a champion ship match.

And finally…

The infant’s family comes from Clonsilla in Dublin, an area I know quite well. I can not imagine, nor do I ever wish to imagine, what these parents are going through; other than to say their level of shock, disbelief and heartbreak must be so traumatic and so intense, they’re going to need every bit of love and support possible to help them navigate through their grief. I have no doubt the good people of Ballinagare and Clonsilla will not just rally round this baby boy’s parents, grandparents and family, but the communities, both of which are very strong, very cohesive and very supportive, will also wrap them in a cloak of love, understanding and gentle ness.My thoughts are also with the poor driver of the vehicle which allegedly struck the little boy. I’m sure his family, friends and his community, will be on hand to provide him with reassurance, assistance and compassion dur ing his time of need. The entire county of Roscommon is weep ing for all who’ve been affected and impacted by this utterly harrowing and heartbreaking tragedy. Rest in peace little angel. of her minions could run her Highness a rose-petalstrewn bath and call her therapist? Oh wait, they can’t, he ‘ghosted’ her! While I’ll always stand up for my fellow Dubs, (especially the northsiders, because I am one), I have to draw the line at defend ing self-entitled motor mouths, specifically ones who appear to have more issues than, well, the mag azine they’re named after! Vogue…get it? As far as I can make out, it was you Vogue who made the mistake of not book ing the correct seat, not this gentleman, who was, by all accounts, in his as signed, booked and paidforI’veseat.been on flights which have been delayed by parents like Ms Williams, who, despite being accom panied by their kids, and wanting to sit with them, can’t be bothered to book specific seats in advance. However, in what I can only describe as a display of arrogance mixed with a side of ‘you-owe-me’, they regularly expect oth ers to jump and move at their say so! Not happen ing! I know it’s hard to fly with kids, but you know what, as nobody wants to be trapped beside a bawl ing baby and their pomp ous parents, those who are travelling kid-free tend to do the smart thing, as in we pre-plan, we pre-book and we pre-pay for our seats! For the record, I do know that not all parents and kids travelling on planes are disruptive. I have, on many occasions, (be cause I’m not heart less), helped a harassed parent by taking the fractious baby for them, walking up and down the aisle soothing their child in my arms; even singing to them, (scary), while mammy/ daddy grabbed a wellearned coffee! However, I can tell you that, given her disgust ing behaviour towards her fellow passenger on that flight, Ms selfabsorbed mother-earth Williams is lucky I wasn’t the one on the receiving end of her megalomaniac rant. If I had, I’d not only have refused to move seats, I’d have told her that, even though her socalled ‘celebrity’ sta tus has well and truly waned, her narcissism clearly hasn’t. Yes folks, while it defi nitely helps to be confi dent and pushy in some aspects of life, (and, given her conduct, I’d say this has-been mod el appears to have cov ered that particular turf nicely), let me advise Vogue that her audacity and her foul language don’t exactly make for good press! the gentleman, unleashed another string of invec tives too disgusting to print in this family publication! Ah bless, perhaps the poor put-upon-poppet was hav ing an ‘off day’? Next time this happens, maybe one Spencer Matthews and Vogue Williams.

Unlike poor misguided Phil, I didn’t lose a bet, and allow my ‘friend’ to choose what may or may not turn out to be a highly regrettable, ahem, piece of body art! Mind you, I do know someone who has his former partner’s name tattooed onto his shoulder, and, bad as that is, it’s even worse that her name is misspelled! Ooops! However readers, let me tell you that while I’m a fan of tattoos, I must point out that what you get inked, where you put it and the significance of it are all de tails that should be specific only to you. There’s a major difference between getting a decorative ankle, foot, shoul der or belly design and stamping your self with an elaborate canvas of some one’s face, or branding yourself with an ex’s name in a spot where your current partner is forced to look at it every time you turn over in the leaba! Ach sin scéal eile mo chairde!

The ego has landed! Vogue gives a masterclass in Divadom!

14 Roscommon People Friday 26 August 2022 NewsPeople

What were you inking, Phil?

According to reports, radio broadcast er Marty Whelan is ‘simultaneously bemused, amused and maybe even a teensy bit horrified’ (aren’t we all?), that some random bloke got his face tat tooed onto his leg!

The story goes that Phil O’Kelly, (who can forget about ever being taken seri ously again in his life), ‘lost a bet in Fan tasy Football’, with the winning party, (his mate), getting to choose his penalty, which was – wait for it – a seven-inch inking of Marty’s mug onto his leg. Let me tell you Phil, given this ‘mate’ chose Marty’s face above all others to be indelibly inked onto your person, it’s my opinion that he’s definitely, beyond any doubt, no friend of yours.

I’m not trying to insult you Marty, you’re a lovely man; and we’ve even worked together in the past on Open House, etc., however, while I’m very fond of you, that sentiment doesn’t ex tend to having your likeness branded onto any part of my anatomy! Like many major decisions in life, get ting inked (or not) is a personal choice. In fact, before getting any of my three tattoos, I spent a lot of time choosing the right design, consulting with the tattoo artist and choosing where on my body I wanted to get them.

On behalf of the entire county of Roscommon, may I offer the most sincere and heartfelt condo lences to the family of precious little Brandon Thomas Byrne who lost his life this week as a result of what was clearly a tragic accident while holidaying in the village of Ballinagare.

Flying home from a luxury family holiday last month, Vogue, real ising she’d ‘accidentally booked the wrong seat’ on the plane, appeared to suffer from a serious case of ‘up-her-ownbackside’; and, (in my opinion) displaying an elevated sense of selfworth, described a fel low passenger, (accord ing to reports) as being ‘a piece of s***’! Wow! But what did this pas senger do to warrant such a vulgar reac tion? Well readers, he’d booked and paid for his seat, yet, because he re fused to vacate it in fa vour of Vogue, (and why should he?), the privi leged-princess decided to give everyone on the flight a masterclass in divadom, hence hitting him with a string of ex pletive-laden abuse! As if that display of self-entitlement wasn’t sickening enough, the clothes-horse, sorry model, and her overbearing arrogance then went into overdrive. Upon being approached by ‘an air-hostess’, (they prefer cabin crew love), Vogue, still referring to Sincere condolence to all affected by the tragic loss of little Brandon

At a time when parents are struggling to pay for their kids’ school sup plies, I’m finding model, influencer, occasional TV presenter, podcaster and all-round attentionseeker Vogue Williams’ ‘first world’ problem re garding a seat on a flight to be both insensitive and downright obtuse. Let me enlighten you, readers. Ms ‘When you wipe bums all day you can’t really get an ego’ Williams would like us all to think that her en tire diet consists of large pieces of humble pie; however, given what I’d describe as being her recent appalling behav iour, I’d say the opposite is clearly the truth!

Even though one might feel the sample for this survey was quite small, I think at this stage there is considerable evidence around the whole country to support the finding that more than half of respondents in the same nationwide survey are under pressure over monthly mortgage payments. Price gouging

For all of the media coverage and hype around the anniversary of the death of Michael Collins in the last seven days, you will forgive me if I point out this week that the achievements of the man in the area of finance were perhaps the single most important part of his CV that has not got the credit and recognition that it deserves. History has certainly provided us with an outstanding legacy for the career of the man who died so young at Béal na Bláth in 1922, but while his ambition and ability shaped that strong reputation, it was his achievements in the role as the most unlikely finance minister in the history of the State that really showed Collins to be an administrator par excellence. At 29 years of age, Collins was the youngest member in an Irish Cabinet where the average age was 44 – yet he discharged his duties with considerable ease, great courage, incompara ble efficiency and inspired purpose during the Anglo-Irish and civil wars and the almighty chal lenges that came his way. Such achievements by a man so young should never be underestimated.

people to brace themselves for further increases in their energy bills. Mr Martin says that the upcoming Budget will help working families to try and cope with the price hikes. There has been considerable media leaking of some of the measures set to be proposed, but for all of the promises of assistance, I think many people are already feeling extreme pressure and trepidation as they try to work out where they are going to get the extra cash for the ESB bill, the supermar ket trolley-load, or deal with the steep costs as sociated with sending a child back to school this The Back Benches

Struggling In the last four weeks we have read in new surveys and polls that nearly eight out of 10 Irish people are struggling to pay monthly household bills like gas and electricity. Some are apparently already getting loans from credit unions to help out. I was simply astonished to read that in a poll of just over 2000 people recently, 70% of those polled thought they would be using hot water

I see evidence each day that prices are still going up at an alarming rate in key areas. The reason for it all is now very much open to several different interpretations. There can be no doubt that the unprecedented war in Ukraine has made heating our homes, buying some foods, and filling up our cars with fuel more and more expensive. Even though there has been some reduction in fuel prices in recent weeks, there is no guarantee that this will not change again. Even after the first round of efforts to help people who are experiencing these financial difficulties, I am not sure if anyone really feels a significant difference.

It is true to say there has been price-cutting of the cost of public transport, reduction of excise duties and VAT on fuel, but there are lots of examples of areas where prices seem to have been raised again just as quickly. In recent times there has been significant evidence of price gouging in key areas as some unscrupulous traders abroad and closer to home moved in and made a killing on the back of poor people by sticking the price up again and taking back for themselves the extra margin that was supposed to be saved. One can only speculate on what the great Mi chael Collins would have had to say about such occurrences or the mess we are in at the moment, but I think most would expect him to have been outraged too. The next Budget is now confronted by severe challenges in its design as it will not only need to be a cost of living Budget, which will focus on areas where people most need help, but also prove that it can adapt and give ongoing supports to people who are in extreme difficulty in trying to pay their bills. Unless this Budget deals firmly with reducing costs in the area of childcare – by helping out working parents – or deals emphatically with cost increases in areas such as public transport and healthcare, there will really be a crisis coming down the line in the autumn. Nobody should doubtHopefully,that. those in authority might learn more from the greatness of Michael Collins in that finance portfolio. Some of our finest historians say Collins’ personal organisation skills were exceptional, allowing him to hold four major po sitions simultaneously, prompting him to impose order and clarity on a world of deep disorder and confusion.It’sattimes like this that we really need these skills back again!

Historians tell us today that his greatest achieve ment in finance was the successful organisa tion of the first national loan scheme. The state records tell us that two million promotional leaflets and 500,000 copies of a shiny new pro spectus to help set up the secretariat for the new government were printed and distributed. More than 50,000 letters were sent to high-net-worth individuals seeking loans. Full-page newspaper advertisements were costed, and €30,000 in today’s money was apparently spent on a new promotional film – even in those days this was exceptionally far-thinking stuff. The scheme was a success. By June 1919, the secretariat of the Dáil had seven new employees, and each of the new government departments were recruiting their own staff. Funding had to be sourced for new overseas diplomats, the planned judicial system, and for other govern ment programmes. It was while reading about this innovative action recently that I began to think of the irony of it all as, one hundred years on from Collins’ death, this country faces financial challenges over and about loans of a different sort in considerable scale heading into the autumn and winter of 2022.

How would Michael Collins have tackled the financial crisis?

September – whether at primary, post-primary or third level. For those with multiple children still attending school and trying to pay for accom modation in cities where the prices have already been hiked, it’s an even more treacherous time – and more loans are most definitely on the cards as people prepare to try and deal with such rising costs. The impact the rising cost of living is having on families right across Ireland is now actually scary.

A fundraising walk will be held in Ballina heglish on Sunday, September 4th. The walk will begin at 4 pm, starting at the Church. The aim of the walk is to bring the com munity together for an afternoon of walking and talking, and also to raise funds for the upkeep of the village and community cen tre. Refreshments will be served afterwards in McDermott’s Lounge. The entry fee is €10 per adult or €20 per family. Children may attend for free, but they must be accompanied by adult. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

We come to the wedding banquet of heaven by way of humility and charity. This is the fatherly instruction we hear in today’s First Reading, and the message of today’s Gospel.Jesusis not talking simply about good table manners. He is revealing the way of the kingdom, in which the one who would be greatest would be the servant of all (see Luke 22:24–27). This is the way, too, that the Father has shown us down through the ages – filling the hungry, sending the rich away empty, lifting up the lowly, pulling down the proud (see Luke 1:52–53). We again call to mind the Exodus in today’s Psalm –how in His goodness the Lord led the Israelites from imprisonment to prosperity, rained down bread from heaven, made them His inheritance, becoming a “Father ofWeorphans”.nowhave also gained a share of His inheritance. We are to live humbly, knowing we are not worthy to receive from His table (see Luke 6:7; 15:21). We are to give alms, remembering we were ransomed from sin by the price of His blood (see 1 Corinthians 6:19–20).

Sinn Féin TD for Roscommon/Galway Claire Kerrane has written to both the Minister for Rural Development and the Minister for Mental Health seeking the inclu sion of a joint funding stream for Men’s Sheds in the upcoming Budget. Deputy Kerrane said: “Previously, a specific stream of funding for Men’s Sheds was available under the Department of Rural and Community Development. This meant that Men’s Sheds had a guaranteed funding stream. However, this has since ended. “We now have a situation where Men’s Sheds have to find alternative funding streams, apply (and some ap plications can be extremely time-consuming), and then hope for the best, with no guarantee of being awarded such grants – and all the time having to pay for the run ning costs of their Shed, including what can often be high insurance costs. “Men’s Sheds provide a space for men, some who may be retired or living alone, including in isolated rural communities. We are also seeing a number of Women’s Sheds now being established. “There is a really important health, well-being and mental health benefit to these Sheds and this should be acknowledged.“Suchfunding would support over 450 Sheds across our communities. I hope that this will be supported and introduced as part of the upcoming Budget”, conclud ed Deputy Kerrane.

The Lord promises that if we are humble we will be exalted and find favour with God; that if we are kind to those who can never repay us, we will atone for sins and find blessing in the resurrection of the righteous. We anticipate the fulfilment of those promises in every Eucharist, today’s Epistle tells us. In the Mass, we enter the festal gathering of the angels and the firstborn children of God. It is the liturgy of the heavenly Jerusalem in which Jesus is the high priest, the King who calls us to come up higher (see Proverbs 25:6–7).

I said to him ‘you can’t park in those bays’ and I was told in no uncertain terms to ‘f**k off’ and mind my own business. I can see no reason why Roscommon Gardaí cannot start cracking down on this issue and ensure Roscommon town has a strict no parking policy in these bays if no blue badge is displayed. The mandatory fine of €150 should be issued.People need these bays to be kept clear for them. If motorists continue to misuse them then they can take the consequences of illegally park ing in these locations and maybe if they have to do so it will curb people’s selfish misuse of these bays. Yours sincerely, Damien Hogan your letters to: Abbey Street, Roscommon Town. Fax: (090) 66 34303 or email: news@roscommonpeople.ie message because he felt the ban went in the name of free speech – and he’s not alone in that opinion. However, it is naive to think this is a matter of censorship; it’s a matter of impeding the dangerous promotion of violence and incitation of hatred. No one is denying that we’re allowed to have different opinions, but promoting vio lent misogyny to an impres sionable audience when you are fully aware of how much influence you hold over them is another thing altogether. We know the real-world harm that manosphere discourse can have. We cannot be more in terested in protecting a bigot’s right to spread bigotry than we are in protecting people’s actualTate’swell-being.ban,apositive step though it is, has not erased his impact. His influence lives on in the clips that his fans con tinue to circulate online, fans who talk about carrying on his legacy in his absence. In a strange and deeply worrying way, this ban has martyred him.This whole ordeal, and the damage done by manosphere discourse in general, ought to teach us that we need healthy online communities for vulnerable young men to turn to that aren’t rooted in male superiority and violent misogyny, because if we don’t, it’s only a matter of time before the next Andrew Tate pops up.

Let’s talk about ... Alannah Ita Healy CENSORSHIP AND THE MANOSPHERE (A student’s perspective) the social ladder) to full-blown ‘incel’ culture. For anyone unaware of the term, ‘incel’ (meaning involuntarily celibate) refers to members of an online community of young men, united in their advocation for male supremacy and the view that their lack of sexual suc cess is the fault of woman kind – whom they view as a money-hungry, promiscuous, and manipulative monolith. The incel community is one of the most clear-cut examples of how manosphere discourse can lead to real-world harm, with there having been several instances of incels committing suicide after being encouraged by fellow incels, or going on violent rampages and killing dozens of people in the name of the so-called ‘incel rebel lion’.Not only does content under the manosphere umbrella present an obvious danger for women (given the blatant, and often violent, misogyny at play), it is also clear that the content is designed to target vulnerable young men who are unhappy in their lives – be it due to a lack of sexual suc cess, perceived social inferior ity, etc. Male mental health is already not given enough space in public discourse, and it is certainly not helped that the loudest voices in the male self-help sphere are from people like Tate. Tate’s audi ence is dominated by young men who want to emulate the success and confidence he boasts about having. Instead, they become deeply influ enced by him, and internalise the extreme and dangerous misogyny he promotes. Despite the ban, Tate was able to share one ‘final mes sage’ to social media via the Twitter account of fellow internet personality Jake Paul. Though Paul had publicly crit icised Tate earlier this month, he explained he posted Tate’s ‘New rules’ and Rose of Tralee not so ‘bloomin’ great’? Co.Carrick-on-Shannon,Roscommon Dear Editor, It’s all very lovey-dovey, fuzzy-wuzzy, trendybendy and pseudo-inclusive supporting the ‘new rules, all-inclusive Rose of Tralee’ competition, which is “bloomin’ great” according to Miriam Kerins (Roscommon People, August 19th). Ms Kerins welcomes what she calls a “bold and progressive move” – extending the age up to 29 years, allowing married women, and those who identify as women to enter The Rose of Tralee competition.Forthepast two years, we have been bom barded by the media’s ‘follow the science’ mantra. So let’s apply that same mantra now to the transgender issue. Females have two X chromosomes and males have one X and one Y chromosome. That’s science. No amount of synthetic hormones, ‘bottom or top surgery’, or GRCs (Gender Recognition Certs) can change our DNA. Having self-identified as being of a different gender to one’s birth gender, or even medically ‘transitioned’, a DNA sample of even a hair on their heads will have two X chromo somes for a female and one X and one Y for a male. Fact! ‘Bob’s your uncle’ as the saying goes…he is never your aunt. Are we to follow the mantra, but only when it suits the agreed narrative? Are we to totally dis credit the scientific evidence of DNA, a science which reaches the ‘Gold Standard’ of crime-solv ing? For this self-identification ideology to work, do the rest of us have to identify as being stupid or naive by ignoring the science? Applying similar ‘logic’ to the self-identification phenomenon, why can’t a woman of 59 years say, self-identify as 29 years to enter The Rose of Tralee, or a 12-year-old self-identify as 18 years old to buy a lottery ticket, arguably less harmful? When there are enough transgender women in this country, let them have their own competition.

Andrew Tate

Influencer Andrew Tate made headlines yet again this week when news broke that he had been banned across all major social media platforms. Over the span of the few days, Tate’s massive online following – comprising 11 billion TikTok views, 4.7 million Instagram followers, 4 million Twitter followers, millions of Facebook interac tions, and almost 800,000 YouTube subscribers – was disbanded. However, neither he, nor his influence, has gone awayPriorcompletely.tothisstring of bans, Tate’s name had been flood ing online discourse for sev eral weeks. A self-described misogynist, Tate gained his recent widespread online relevance on the back of sev eral different clips that began circulating across the various social media platforms, but particularly on TikTok. In these clips, Tate refers to women as men’s physical and financial property, suggests rape victims “bear responsi bility” for their attacks, admits to dating 18/19-year-olds so he can “make an imprint on them”, and frequently talks about hitting and choking women. This is not to men tion what has been reported about Tate beyond these clips, such as the fact that he is cur rently under investigation for both human trafficking and rapeTatecharges.roseto prominence in 2016 following a controver sial Big Brother appearance, and in the years following, he focused on cultivating his on line audience. Tate marketed himself as a ‘self-help guru’ for young men, his content occupying an online space known as the ‘manosphere’. The manosphere refers to a subsection of the internet dedicated to the promo tion of hypermasculinity and misogyny. The type of content found within the manosphere ranges widely, covering everything from ‘alpha male’ content (which promotes pick-up culture and hypermasculinity to young men as a means of climbing

One of the highlights of the summer/autumn season was the return of Roscommon Drama Group’s presentation of ‘A Lone Furrow’, a period play written specially for the Group by local man Tommy Murray. It told the story of Aleen Cust, the first fe male veterinary surgeon in Brit ain and Ireland, who was based in Athleague some one hundred yearsEvenago.though she had success fully completed her studies at Edinburgh Veterinary College, the Royal Council of Veterinary Surgeons would not allow her to sit their professional Diploma, just because she was a woman. In his beautifully written play, Murray exposes the long strug gle she had to be recognised and the vital part that local vet Wil liam Byrne had in helping her to achieve her goal, by appointing her as his Veterinary Assistant. Murray also recreates the hostile reception she received from the local parish priest, who thought that she would give scandal to the women of the parish by per forming her veterinary duties on animals.With a cast of twenty-three players and a large backstage crew, the play ran for three

A Lone Furrow: Amateur drama at its best nights to packed audiences at Roscommon Arts Centre. It was expertly co-directed by two experienced hands, Brigeen Fitzmaurice and Tom Costello, and the audiences witnessed superb performances from the largeCarolcast.Murray as Aleen Cust gave a well-balanced and controlled performance. Ber nie Maher as Aleen’s house keeper, Mary, won the hearts of the audiences from the be ginning, and gave a virtuoso performance right through to the final scene. Aidan Flana gan as William Byrne played his role in a good-humoured and emotional style, while Joe Fahey as the parish priest was a forceful presence any time he stepped on stage. Majella Flanagan gave a beautifully judged performance as the aristocratic Lady Cust, and Jimmy Hoban was an apt choice as her short-lived hus band, Leopold. The rest of the cast gave very believable performances in a myriad of supporting roles. The cast members in support ing roles included Jim Conlon, Emma Fitzmaurice, Vincent Pierse, Geraldine Hoban, Steve Gregary, Kevin Woods, Will Keane, John F Hanley, Michael Oates, Gerry Browne, Marie Conroy, Joe Fahey, John Burns, Pat Compton, Tommy Farrell, John McGrath, Tom Costello, Frank Nally and Aideen Mc Conn. The joint submission says there has been so much intervention in the market that some landlords are holding properties out of the market and it predicts that new legislation in June this year increasing the notice periods for termination will hasten the exit of small landlords from the mar ket.It proposes that on re-renting when a tenant leaves, landlords should be al lowed to charge market rent, and it calls for rental income to be treated as relevant income for pension purposes and capital loan repayments should be available for pension relief.

proposals Monksland Hub to be ‘major jobs driver’ for Roscommon Athlone Business Awards 2022 launched

“The State cannot afford to allow funds with annual rental profits of hundreds of millions of euro to operate on a tax-free basis whilst their smaller private counter parts pay tax at up to 55 per cent,” it says. The new rate of tax should be funded by applying the rate to all landlords, includ ing investment funds/REITS. It says historically private landlords looked to securing an independent source of pension income from their rental prop erties “but the risks and exposures for (private) landlords have changed dramat ically since 2006”.

Throughout the years the awards have grown to become one of the most important dates in calendars across Athlone and its environs, rec ognising the innovation, talent, qual ity and entrepreneurial spirit of busi nesses and the people within Athlone. While many of the categories will remain unchanged, there are some changes which recognise the efforts of the business community in areas such as digitalisation and climate action, full details of which are now available on the Athlone Chamber website. For further information in relation to the Athlone Business Awards 2022, contact Gerry McInerney, CEO, Ath lone Chamber on info@athlonecham ber.ie

Growth projections reveal that the new Monksland ‘Life Sciences Hub’ has the capacity to create 125 jobs over a three-year pe riod, based on current de mand conditions. The new facility will pro vide a co-working space, training facilities and a soft landing space for companies starting out in this recognised Life Sci ences nucleus. The build ing will become part of an overall network of themat ic hubs in the county along with Boyle and Castlerea. The overall budget of €3,668,734 is supported by a grant of €2,751,544 from Minister Hum phreys’ Department and the project is currently out for tender with anticipated construction work com mencing later this year and expected to be com pleted by the third quarter of 2023.The planned facility builds upon the high-level entrepreneurial spirit in the county, with 94% of Roscommon’s overall business being microenterprise driven. The project will offer local graduates the opportunity to return to a start-up, sup portive, attractive environ ment.The project sees Ro scommon County Council working in Partnership with the Department of Rural & Community De velopment refurbishing an existing disused building adjacent to the M6 Dublin to Galway motorway at Monksland into an Inno vation Hub. A new tax rate of 25 per cent, inclusive of USC and PRSI, a reduction in Capital Acquisitions Tax and the ability for land lords to charge market rent on re-renting properties are among the measures being recommended in a joint Pre-Budget sub mission to government made on Wednes day by IPAV, the Institute of Professional Auctioneers & Valuers and IPOA, the Irish Property Owners’ Association, to help stem the flow of private landlords from the market.

The ICMSA leader said there was a real danger that politicians were now “throwing out ideas” that were doing more harm than good.

The topics for discus sion on the day focused on CAP, wool, environ ment and sheep produc tion.Speakers included rep resentatives from Tea gasc, Sheep Ireland, Gil rane & Associates, Future Cast, EweKnit, as well as environmentalist Dolores Byrne.“Events such as these are a great opportunity to bring together our coun terparts and share knowl edge and expertise in the interests of all sheep farmers,” he Concluding,said.Kevin Co miskey said it’s important that both organisations continue to engage for the improvement of the sheep sector across the island of Ireland.

“It was the Government that an nounced that we had to move past talking and into action and – that being the case – it’s really time for ministers themselves to stop thinking out loud and come back instead with some hard and logical proposals”.

“Following prolonged negotiations, significant progress has been made and the impact the regulation has on trade has been substantially reduced to focus on higher risk animals only – cows, and males over 36 months of age”.

Farmers cannot bear any additional TB costs – IFA Edel and Cian O’Reilly and Mary Mullen pictured at the Roscommon Agricultural Show last Saturday.

IFA Animal Health Chairman TJ Maher has spoken about new EU regulations requiring animals moving from farm to farm or through the marts to be tested within a certain timeframe. He said: “Initially, the requirements of the new regulations were to come into play in January 2022, on all animals moving without a TB test in the previous six months and without a herd test within the previous six months.

IFA and UFU meet to

IFA Sheep Chairman Kevin Comiskey recent ly hosted the UFU Hill Sheep Committee on two farms in Co. Leitrim. Speaking after the event, he said the discussions were an important oppor tunity to cover a variety of topics impacting the sheep sector and the key factors associated with sheep production.

The Animal Health Chairman added: “Payment of the additional testing is a red line issue for us, and the long-stand ing position of the IFA Animal Health committee is that farmers only pay for one annual TB test per year. Any other additional statutory testing obligations or TB control programme requirements must be paid for by the Department. This position has not changed.

“The Financial Working Group of the TB Forum has not agreed on the pay ment of the additional testing require ments and the implementation of the reg ulation has been deferred until February 2023. The IFA policy is clear that until there is an agreement within the Finan cial Working Group, the regulation must not be implemented,” he concluded.

Responding to the reported re marks of Minister of State, Pippa Hackett, in which she raised the possibility of livestock farmers introducing horses as a way of reducing emissions while sup porting the equestrian sector, the President of ICMSA said that it appeared that the minister was “on a bit of a cross-country gallop her self”.PatMcCormack said: “The most immediate question that would oc cur to anyone after reading Minis ter Hackett’s remarks would be what are we expected to do with 5,000 or 10,000 extra horses? Did the minister envisage Ireland exporting (more) horsemeat or a quadrupling of demand for racing bloodstock? What were the farm ers to do with these horses?” Mr. McCormack said ICMSA fully accepts the agriculture sector must “think outside the box” when it comes to emissions. “We have always been up for that. All we ask for is that the poli cies and ideas be based in some reality and we are struggling here to see the basis on which Minister Hackett can come to the conclu sion that introducing horses onto threatened family dairy farms represents economic and environ mental progress”.

In loving memory of a dear father and grandfather who died on 27th August 2020 3 DAY NOVENA TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN O, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splen dour of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immacu late Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. O, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succour me in my neces sity (your request). There are none that can withstand your power. O, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands, after each prayer, say 9 Hail Marys. You must publish and it will be granted to you. P.S.

And most of the time his worries went unspoken too he was there…a firm foundation through all our storms of life a sturdy hand to hold onto. In times of stress and strife a true friend we could turn to when times were good or bad one of our greatest blessings the man that we call Dad.

xx

The fact that you’re no longer here will always bring me pain you’re forever in my heart until we meet again. Sadly missed and always remembered by Michael. He never looked for praises he was never one to boast he just went on quietly working for the ones he loved the most his dreams were seldom spoken his wants were very few.

Those special memories of you Dad will always bring a smile if only I could have you back for just a little while. Then we could sit and talk again just like we used to do you always meant so very much and always will do too.

Anniversary Mass to be celebrated on Sunday, 28th August at 11.30 am in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Ruskey.

Lovingly remembered forever by Pauric Gone is the face we loved so dear, silent is the voice we loved to hear. Too far away for sight or speech, but not too far for thought to reach. Sweet to remember him who once was here and who, though absent, is just as dear. Always lovingly remembered and missed by Vinny, Monica and your much loved grandchildren, Eoghan, Aaron and Kilian. You held my hand when I was small you caught me when I fell. You are the hero of my childhood and my later years as well and every time I think of you my heart still fills with pride. Though I will always miss you Dad I know you’re by my side. In laughter and in sorrow in sunshine and in rain I know you’re watching over me until we meet again Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by David and Geraldine. I think of things you used to say and all that you would do at some point every single day my thoughts will turn to you to lose you was a bitter wrench. The pain cut to the core I cried until my tears ran out and then I cried some more that wouldn’t be your wish for me that I’d be forever sad. So I try to remind myself of the happy times we had I know that I can’t be with you now and you can’t be with me but safe inside my heart you’ll stay that’s where you’ll always be. Love and miss you Daddy xxx Teresa, Ollie and your little woman Mia.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Rest easy Pa, lots of love from Laura, Rachel, Rebecca, Chloe, Eoghan, Aaron, Kilian and Mia.
The years may pass, But still you stay, As near and dear, As yesterday. Always loved Brenda. xx To us you were someone special, What more is there to say. Wishing with all our hearts, That you were here today. Always remembered Ailish and Aidan. If I had one wish today, I know what it would be, Just to see your face again, Would mean the world to me. I look up to the sky, When it’s a starry night, And know that you’ll be there, The biggest star shining bright. Loved and always remembered, Noelle. x I thought of you today but that is nothing new I thought about you yesterday and days before that too. For in my heart there is a place that only you can hold filled with loving memories far more priceless than gold. I know that you still hear me Dad so please know this is true that everything I am today is all because of you. Your memory is a keepsake from which I’ll never part God has you in his arms I have you in my heart Lovingly remembered and missed by Ann and Liam and your beloved grandchildren Laura, Rachel, Rebecca and Chloe. xx
First place this year went to Maura O’Farrell, 2nd place went to Kathleen Mahon, Gross win ner was Tish Perry and 3rd place went to Joey Mullaney. The win ner of the 9-hole competition was Fiona Keenan and the Lady President’s to the Men competi tion was won by Tom Kearney. Well done to the Boyle Con nacht Shield team, captained by Niall Kearney, who had a tight win over our neighbours in Bal laghaderreen Golf Club. Boyle had won 2 of the games at home comfortably and had lost the 2 away games in Ballaghader reen, so the deciding game was the last one in Boyle where Terry Canning and Charlie O’Donnell were all square after the first 18 holes, thus proceeding to a sud den death play-off. Terry and Charlie eventually prevailed af ter 20 holes of golf, clinching the overall result for Boyle. Well done to the Lady Presi dent’s Scramble winners, Denise O’Dowd, Regina McLoughlin and Chris O’Dowd. The winner of the Men’s Thursday Competi tion held on the 18th of August was Dessie Murphy. C’monTheTown (RoscommonTownYouthSoccer)Inassociationwiththe It was a good weekend for Roscommon 60x30 handball with three wins out of four All-Ireland semi-finals and another walkover.GlenWalshe was a very impres sive winner of his Masters ‘B’ match with Antrim’s Con Collins held in St. Coman’s last Saturday. Utilising a su perb lob serve from the right side the powerful left-hander controlled the action from early on against the trans planted Clare man. Collins showed tremendous mobility and fitness, but Glen’s superior skills and lovely corner killing meant he always looked the more likely winner. There were some very good rallies in the first but Glen usually came out on top and after winning it 2112, the second was a lot more clearcut, going the Roscommon man’s way 21-4. On the same bill Carragh Kennedy had another comfortable win in her Ladies Minor match with Tyrone’s Cloda Nic Con Midhe. Carragh’s powerful roundthe-walls serving immediately caused problems for the Northerner and that re ally was the story of the match. Carragh never relented and consistently kept her opponent out at the back of the court and never looked in trouble, winning 21-1, 21-4. Carragh has a wonderful opportu nity to take the All-Ireland as the final will be in her home court of St. Coman’s, against Clare’s Leah Minogue. Siobhan Treacy travelled all the way to Loughmacrory, Co. Tyrone to take on local girl Clare Conway in their Ladies Junior ‘B’ semi-final. The Loughmac rory court is probably the highest in Ireland and Siobhan made great use of the added height when serving. Despite Conway’s best effort Siobhan controlled the match all the way showing excellent volleying skills before prevailing on a 21-7, 21-7 scoreline. The match of the day was definitely Colm Walshe’s versus Cavan’s super-fit Cian McManus in the Junior ‘B’ semifinal. Colm was by far the classier hand baller, but McManus showed incredible heart and speed around the court. He plays county football for Fermanagh, but with no registered club in that coun ty, he plays his handball out of Cavan and his fitness proved to be the key to victory. Colm raced into a big lead in the first, volleying very well and killing in the left corner whenever the opportunity arose. It was only towards the end of the first that McManus seemed to get to grips with Colm’s ciotóg style and while he made the final few points a lot more dif ficult, Colm took it 21-7. The second was much closer the whole way, with McManus reading Colm’s kills and making some superb picks as the St. Coman’s man tired. McManus nicked the second 21-19 to take it to a tie-breaker. McManus got off to a flier, but Colm showed great grit when all looked lost, killing superbly, but unfor tunately McManus just held on to take it 11-9. Due to injury, Denis Creaton received a walkover from Cavan’s James Brady in the Masters grade and will face Of faly’s strong left-hander David Hope in the final. St. Coman’s hosted both the Men’s and Women’s Senior semi-finals on Satur day and everything ran as smoothly as expected. It was the perfect preparation for the Senior and Minor finals which will be held in St. Coman’s on Saturday, 3rd of September. Two pointed frees from Fintan Cregg by the 49th minute saw the margin down to four once again and with five minutes to go sub Frankie Cregg blasted home a great goal to leave the bare minimum between the sides. Elphin pressed forward looking for the equalis ing score but the Gaels’ defence stood firm and Richard Hughes settled it in the 59th minute with a long-range free. The Gaels progress with a round to go, but they will need a major improvement if they are to advance further.
Group C Best game of the weekend was the drawn encounter between Strokestown and Tulsk. It keeps both sides in with a chance of qualification. St Brigid’s will go through as the seeded team after their demolition of Padraig Pears es (see match report). The champions will have to beat Strokestown to be absolutely sure of getting to the quarterfinals. The most likely sce nario is that Brigid’s, Pearses and Strokestown will qualify from this section.
Group B St Dominic’s remain on course for another good championship run after their second win, but they were made fight all the way by St Brigid’s at Kiltoom. St Aidan’s are back in the mix after a good win against Shannon Gaels in Ballyforan. Shannon Gaels are pointless after losing both matches so far and will have to win their final game to have a chance of avoiding a relegation play-off.
ElphinGaelsRoscommon2-71-8 < SEAMUS DUKE Roscommon Gaels squeezed through to the play-off stages of this year’s championship fol lowing this narrow victory against Elphin in what was a tense and nervy affair at Lisnamult on Friday night. Elphin staged a secondhalf comeback which came up just short and now, after two losses, they will have to prepare for a relegation play-off. The Gaels were much improved on their opening match against Oran and were the better team in the first half. David O’Gara was very effective at fullforward with Mark Healy, John McManus, Richard Hughes and Kieran Kil cline all doing well for the homeTheside.Gaels scored their first goal in the 11th minute when James McDermott’s high ball was fisted home by Richard Walsh. Then in the 18th minute the sec ond goal came courtesy of Richard Hughes after DJ Hession’s shot came back off a post. At half-time the Gaels led by 2-3 to 0-5. Elphin never gave up the < SEAMUS DUKE Group A This group is now all but decided with a round of games still to go. Oran will go to the quarter-finals as a seeded team after their threepoint win against Michael Glavey’s. Oran were 2-9 to 0-3 ahead in that match and had to withstand a Glavey’s comeback in the second half. Elphin will face a relegation play-off after their narrow defeat against Roscommon Gaels (see match report). The only issue to be decided is who will finish second and third between the Gaels and Glavey’s.
Fuerty are through to the quarter-finals after a highscoring eight-point win against St Croan’s at Mulh ern Park. Creggs are also through after an impressive four-point win against Kilmore. The final place will be decided in round three when St Croan’s and Kilmore meet. A draw or a win will do for St Croan’s while Kilmore have to win to avoid a relegation play-off.
Group B Clann na nGael are through as the seeded team after their two-point win against Western Gaels. They scored three first-half goals in their win in Frenchpark. Boyle are also through after a for tunate one-point win against St Faithleach’s at Ballyleague with Cian McKeon scoring the winning point for Cian Smith’s side in the 6th minute ofTheinjury-time.weekend results mean that the third round game between St Faithleach’s and Western Gaels is now a ‘win ner take all’ contest with the winners going through and the losers facing a relegation play-off.
St Brigid’s 4-10 Padraig Pearses 0-8 < SEAMUS DUKE St Brigid’s sent a very loud and clear message to all comers that they are determined to take the Fahey Cup back to Kiltoom this year with this whopping 14-point win against reigning Roscommon and Connacht champions Padraig Pearses at sunny Ballyforan last Sunday. It is a long time since a Pearses team was as easily beaten in the championship, but one must remember that the title hold ers were in a somewhat similar position last year after losing to Clann na nGael. As the record shows, they recovered then!
The result was a fore gone conclusion long before referee Paddy Neilan called a halt to Hubertproceedings.Darcypointed a 3rd minute free but by the time they got their next point in the 18th minute the champions were eight points down. In the 6th minute Conor Gleeson blasted home a great goal after a storm ing run and clever pass from Brian Stack. Back in action: Kevin McStay and Liam McHale (pictured during their term with Roscommon senior footballers) have teamed up again following the appointment of McStay as Mayo manager (his high profile backroom team will include McHale, Stephen Rochford, Damien Mulligan and Donie Buckley).
Former Roscommon manager Kevin McStay was named as the new manager of the Mayo senior football team on Monday night following a meeting of the Mayo GAA Executive committee and the Mayo GAA County Board. The appointment of the Roscom mon town resident brings to an end an almost two-month search for James Horan’s replacement. McStay has been handed a fouryear term and brings with him a strong backroom team of Liam McHale, Stephen Rochford, Damien Mulligan and highly re garded GAA coach from Kerry, Donie Buckley. McStay, who won two Con nacht titles and an All-Star during his playing career with Mayo, also guided Roscommon club St. Brigid’s to All-Ireland club glory in 2013 and went on to win a Connacht title as manager with the Roscommon senior team in 2017, beating Galway 2-15 to 0-12, in Pearse Stadium, Salthill. Wishing Kevin and his backroom team all the best, Mayo GAA Chair person Seamus Tuohy said: “I want to thank all the candidates that put their name forward for the position of Mayo senior football manager. It was an arduous process but we are confident we have chosen the best person for the job. “Kevin has a proven track record with both Roscommon and St. Brigid’s GAA club and he brings a wealth of experience to the posi tion”.Speaking to www.mayogaa.com after his ratification, Kevin McStay said it was a great honour and privi lege to manage his native county. “It was always a desire of mine to return some day to manage the Mayo senior football team and I am very grateful to have been given this opportunity now. I am looking for ward to the challenges that lie ahead and I will leave no stone unturned in my efforts to keep Mayo com petitive and challenging for national honours,” he Meanwhile,said.there has been no public update in recent days on the search by Roscommon GAA for a new manager to replace Anthony Cunningham, who stepped down recently. Padraig Pearses GAA Club have confirmed that they have nom inated their own manager, Pat Fla nagan, for consideration for the role.
