I JUST CAN’T REMEMBER! Huh? Seriously! My favourite movie! There are just too many things to remember!

I don’t understand…

It seems like every day I’m being quizzed, and my mind can’t cope!

Do you remember what you can’t remember?

Eh…YES! (They pause, to allow the slight tension to ease before it becomes slightly more than slight)

Planning Permission I would like to build an extension to my house but I am unsure if I need to apply for planning permission. I understand some extensions may not require planning permission provided they are under a particular size, is this correct? Are there any other restrictions?

Whether the proposed extension to your property requires planning permission or not will depend on a number of factors. Generally, small domestic extensions will not require planning permission if it does not exceed 40 square metres in size. However, any previous extension must also be considered so that the combined area of all extensions may not exceed 40 square metres.

For terraced or semi-detached houses, the floor area of any extension above ground level may not exceed 12 square metres. Also, the extension may not exceed the height of the house and the extension may not reduce the area of private open space to less than 25 square metres.

Specific rules also apply regarding height. For example, if the rear wall of your house does not include a gable, the height of the walls of the extension must not exceed the height of the rear wall of your house. If the rear wall of your house has a gable, the walls of the extension shall not be higher than the side walls of your house. In the case of a flat roofed extension, the height of the highest part of the roof may not exceed the height of the eaves or parapet. In any other case, no part of the new roof may exceed the highest part of the roof of the house.

It is strongly advisable to speak with your architect or engineer regarding your specific plans prior to commencing works. Your Local Authority can take action if a development does not have the required permission, or where terms of permission have not been met. The Local Authority may require you to take whatever steps they deem necessary in order to regularise the development.

What we didn’t like…

Unnecessary stress and confusion for the hospitality industry and public alike, amidst suggestions earlier this week that some outdoor drinking may be illegal. The publicans and restaurant owners have suffered enough, and common sense should be applied! Roll on the much-mooted outdoor summer, hopefully backed up next month by the return of indoor hospitality.

Athlone test centre to open today as outbreak fears grow A new pop-up Covid-19 test centre is set to open at St. Aloysius College in Athlone today (Thursday) following a local outbreak of the virus believed to be linked to the more transmissible Delta variant.

The centre will be open to both children and adults from 10 am to 4 pm daily until Saturday (26th). Those attending are required to bring identification.

The Department of Public Health in the Midlands is urging anyone who attended social events along the River Shannon on June 11th to seek a test.

The call comes after the HSE

confirmed that it was investigating a number of suspected Delta variant cases of Covid-19 this week believed to be linked to social events close to the River Shannon over a week ago.

“These cases are associated with socialising down by the river on Friday, June 11th. It is not clear how transmission occurred. It may be that social distancing advice was not adhered to and there have been reports of house parties that night,” a statement said.

The HSE said the Delta variant is highly transmissible and

that those who are not vaccinated are at risk of infection.

It urged anyone who was socialising in Athlone on Friday, June 11th and thinks they may have been exposed to Covid-19 to seek a test immediately.

Heightened concerns over a possible Delta outbreak in the midlands comes after Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan said there had been a concerning increase in the transmission of the Delta variant in recent weeks and that it now accounted for 20 per cent of new Covid-19 cases.

Heritage Week events along Suck Valley Way A series of events will take place along the Suck Valley Way during this year’s Heritage Week which takes place from August 14th to 22nd.

Organisers have confirmed cycling, kayaking, lectures and music will take place throughout the week and call on anyone interested in staging further events to get in touch.

Cllr. Anthony Waldron is the chairperson of the Suck Valley Way committee and he says the week of

activities on the river will serve to promote Roscommon to an international audience.

“We are continuing the good work of Fr. O’Flanagan in promoting the county to audiences across Ireland and further afield in places like the US,” he said.

History was made on Monday last as Fianna Fáil Councillor Joe Murphy followed in his brother, Senator Eugene Murphy’s footsteps when he was elected as the new Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council. Cllr.

Murphy will replace the outgoing Cathaoirleach Laurence Fallon.

The Murphys are the first set of brothers to hold the chain of office.

Cllr. Murphy, who was proposed by Cllr. John Cummins and seconded by Cllr. Tom Crosby saw off fellow nominee, Cllr. Nigel Dineen, by eleven votes to six with one abstention from Cllr. Valerie Byrne.

The 55-year-old postman and farmer was first co-opted to Roscommon County Council in 2016 when brother Eugene was elected to Dáil Éireann, winning reelection in the Boyle Municipal District in 2019.

Describing himself as “a proud Roscommon person”, the new Cathaoirleach told Monday’s AGM of the local authority that he would continue to work tirelessly to promote Roscommon and all the county had to offer.

“It is my honour to stand here before you today as the newly elected Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council. When I was co-opted to Roscommon County Council in 2016 and again elected by the people of the Boyle Electoral Area in 2019, I made a promise both to myself and to them to work tirelessly in an effort to assist them and to promote all Roscommon had to offer.

I believe that my new role will only assist me further in my efforts,” he said.

Cllr. Murphy thanked outgoing Cathaoirleach Laurence Fallon and Leas Cathaoirleach Marty McDermott for “holding firm

during a difficult period in our history when everything changed”.

He added that while the Covid pandemic has changed the way we work and socialise, the reopening of society would offer County Roscommon new opportunities.

“As the world opens up, now more than ever, everything will be local. We need to make the most of this opportunity by rediscovering all our county has to offer – everything from our great restaurants, our amazing amenities to our wonderful suppliers and shops,” he said.

He added that as a small farmer, he understood the contribution agriculture makes to the rural economy and that it was “vital that the traditional family farm is protected”.

On local jobs, Cllr. Murphy said it was important that the ‘Just Transition’ programme delivered sus-

tainable solutions to areas affected by Bord na Móna closures and that he looked forward to meeting with the IDA to hear their “vision and plans for Roscommon in the near future”.

He highlighted the local authority’s efforts in developing industrial hubs throughout the county and said it was important for local representatives to continue to raise the issue of financial and postal services with local Oireachtas members.

He encouraged members of the public to actively engage with litter picks throughout the county and commended the young people of the county for their resilience during this “trying pandemic period”.

Cllr. Murphy thanked his original campaign team including Director of Elections Claire Hoare, An Post colleagues and manager Peter Hanley, neighbours, friends and family includ-

ing his mother, wife Nicola and two sons.

“Today, I am very happy to be joined by my wonderful mother, and my siblings, some of whom are joining us via live stream.

I’d also like to remember my later father, whom I’m sure would have been very proud to see a second one of his children elected as Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council.

“To conclude, my heartfelt thanks to Nicola, Conor and Oisin, without their continued support none of this would be possible,” he said.

Cllr. Murphy’s fellow Fianna Fáil Councillor, Orla Leyden, was elected as the new Leas Cathaoirleach, succeeding Cllr. Marty McDermott in the role.

Cllr. Leyden defeated Cllr. Donal Kilduff also by eleven votes to six, with Cllr. Byrne once again abstaining.

NewsPeople Athleague woman is laid to rest following house fire tragedy The Athleague woman who lost her life in a house fire early on Thursday morning last was laid to rest on Monday.

Noreen Flanagan, An Graig, Athleague, and formerly of Toberkeague, Athleague, was aged in her fifties and lived alone. She was described as a popular individual, and member of a well-respected local family.

Gardaí and emergency services were called to the scene of the house fire shortly after 7 am on Thursday morning last. Ms. Flanagan, the sole occupant of the house, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Beloved daughter of the late Paddy and Norah, Noreen will be sadly missed by her brothers, Padraig and Frank; sisters Margaret, Mary and Ann; nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-inlaw, relatives, friends, and her caring, kind neighbours.

A private family funeral took place in St. Patrick’s Church, Athleague on Monday last, with burial afterwards in Athleague Cemetery.

Callaghan: ‘Ballaghaderreen Public Realm project is too big to miss out on’ < DAN DOONER

Fine Gael Councillor Liam Callaghan has expressed serious concerns over the future of the proposed €3 million Public Realm works in Ballaghaderreen, claiming the project may be abandoned without public support.

Cllr. Callaghan said he fears the funding will be lost the town and county as council officials may not have sufficient time to prepare plans for a similar project in another town.

“Following on from the public consultation, the consultants BDP are hoping to amend the plans, which will deal with public concerns such as parking, loading bays and disabled parking in the town centre.

“The regeneration project hopes to re-invent the town centre. It includes modernising streets, footpaths, and pedestrian crossings, and developing a town focal point for events. The plans propose to increase pedestrian activity and make the town more welcoming and relaxing,” he said.

The Fine Gael Councillor added: “It is fair to say that Ballaghaderreen has been neglected over the years, and this project can be the beginning point for a large amount of inward investment

“Projects such as An Bealach and the devopment of childcare can further increase economic activity around the town”.

Cllr. Callaghan is now urging business people of the town, the general public, community leaders and elected representatives to find a common ground so that the public realm project can successfully progress to Part 8 planning, and ensure that Ballaghaderreen makes a serious application for funding,

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK A column by Roscommon People editor Wednesday

Another Roscommon People issue is ‘put to bed’. In it, I’ve given a brief mention to Edwin Poots, the new DUP leader, who mischievously said that history will be kind to his predecessor, Arlene Foster. I may begin a ‘POOTS-WATCH’ column and report weekly (perhaps even weakly) on the enigmatic Edwin’s leadership. I look forward to his long and colourful term at the top.

Thursday This evening, Edwin Poots resigned as DUP leader…after just three weeks in situ. It’s chaos for the DUP, and also a setback for my ‘POOTSWATCH’ column (now abandoned).

Maybe I jinxed enigmatic Edwin by giving him a mention in this humble column? I suspect there’s more to it than that. Oh well. Political life will be a touch duller without him.

As an aside, I was amused by the Belfast Telegraph’s boast that, a few days on from his shock resignation, Edwin had “broken his silence” (to them, of course). This exclusive was supported by a quote from Edwin, who broke his silence thus: “I have nothing to say”.

Friday Due to the good weather, Euro 2020, the (TV) golf – and an outbreak of maturity on my part – I haven’t seen or heard any political programmes over the past week or so.

So, for example, in place of a holier than thou Kerry man with a built-in cap staring down Matt and proclaiming “But what you must consider is…”, there’s the intoxicating distraction of sport, with engaging football and smiling fans at the Euros, and great golfing drama in the US. In place of earnest debates on the admittedly excellent Channel 4 News, there’s been a couple of spontaneous barbeques at our house.

Turning the burgers and sipping a cold beer, I’ve been missing out on the familiar political menu…those silly spats, fake rows, exaggerated claims, and all the spurious spin.

Saturday Oh seriously, they must be fuming in Sunday Independent Life magazine HQ… They’ve just been scooped by those rather less glamorous neighbours in the Irish Independent Review section. As ever, the shy and not retiring Miriam is at the centre of it all.

Today, there’s yet another er… exclusive interview with Miriam O’Callaghan, another weekend newspaper grateful for the RTE star’s generosity with her time when the media comes calling.

This latest splash on Miriam is across two pages in Saturday’s Irish Independent, with a front page photo and a lame exclusive (Miriam: I’ll never run for president!). Actually, the exclamation mark is mine.

I can only assume that heads will roll in the Sunday Independent Life magazine HQ, where the Miriam-ometer mustn’t be working. Normally, ‘Life’ features Miriam a few times a year in massive photo/interview spreads, but this weekend they’ve been scooped.

Never fear, I’m here to update on the latest updates from modest Miriam. Asked about that perpetual presidential speculation, Miriam (who could have just said ‘Nah. Not interested’) managed to elaborate: “Those stories originated in polls. A couple of parties did polls with a list of names on them, including my name.

And for what it’s worth, I topped a lot of them”.

On CNN’s John King saying someone had described her as Ireland’s Oprah, Miriam gushes: “She’s (Oprah Winfrey) probably the biggest box office female presenter on the planet”.

Asked about missing out on the Late Late Show hot seat, Miriam responded: “I got to present it twice as the first woman. So at least I am in the history books”.

Sunday “This is the power of positive thinking” said new US Open Champion John Rahm, who has definitely approached the last three weeks in a better frame of mind than Edwin Poots did.

A thrilling final round in the US Open proved to be a Father’s Day treat for many of us. This is Sunday night TV Heaven. No amount of house or garden makeover shows could draw us away from a very dramatic finale.

Entering the back straight in a major, the greatest golfers in the world are tested way beyond their actual skill.

Now it’s about temperament, mental strength, how you can cope under intense pressure.

Tonight, superstars began to self-implode once they had sight of the winning post. It made for high drama, riveting TV. Bryson DeChambeau scrambles an 8 on a par 4 hole. Rory McIllroy, purr-

ing with purpose all day, suddenly double-bogeys.

In the end, a great tournament has a fitting finale. A few weeks ago, Spain’s John Rahm was six shots clear in a tournament in America. Overnight, he tested positive for Covid, and had to withdraw. Tonight, Rahm thundered two dream putts in on holes 17 and 18, fist-pumping his way to an emotional first major win. He’s a charismatic golfer, who spoke with great dignity and humility moments after the greatest win of his career.

Elsewhere in the US, Leona Maguire’s tremendous run of form saw her come close to gaining a first win on the LPGA tour, the Cavan woman finishing second on a spectacular 23 under par.

Monday A confession: By today, I was wilting.

Even as an avid football fan, I was struggling to get excited by some of the fixtures in the sprawling Euro 2020 jamboree. Of course I’m still ‘onside’, still very grateful for this tournament, but over the past few days I’ve been choosing highlights’ shows over live games (making an exception for

England v Scotland and Portugal v Germany).

Then, tonight, a reminder of why we love the game, why we love sport. Denmark’s Euro 2020 ride looked doomed over the past week. In their first game, star player Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch before having his life saved by medics. Distraught Danish players had to resume playing a couple of hours later. Eriksen, thankfully, is recovering well.

Tonight, Denmark produced an inspired performance to shock Russia, the Danes winning 4-1.

With Belgium beating Finland in the other group game, it meant Denmark qualified for the knockout stages, amidst highly emotional scenes in Copenhagen.

It was a thrilling performance by Denmark, a quality football match played against a very emotional backdrop. “Roy of the Rovers stuff” said RTE co-commentator Kenny Cunningham.

Soccer can serve up its share of boring fare, but one night in Copenhagen has reminded us of the glorious unpredictability and enduring appeal of the beautiful game.

Tuesday Due to lockdown, I hadn’t been on the new Oran road until now.

It’s spectacular. Passing the GAA grounds, then progressing a little further, I was very pleasantly surprised by the stunning vision in front of me: a spectacular new road which curves and rises, almost taking one’s breath away. It really is a superb piece of infrastructure.

Gone are the troublesome bends and old deficiencies. In their place, a ‘super-surface’, aptly celebrated by the presence of an Oran flag strategically perched on the hilltop which lords over the new roadway.

Wednesday I see Jeffrey Donaldson is the new leader of the DUP, their third leader in a matter of weeks (see ‘Wednesday’ and ‘Thursday’ above). It’s a bit like that year (1978) when we had three popes... oh, maybe not.

Wind Turbine Action Group vows to fight on < DAN DOONER

Roscommon County Council is due to announce its decision on a planning application for the development of a wind turbine by Natural Forces Renewable Energy Ltd at Kilcash, Farbreagues, Co. Roscommon today (Thursday, 24th).

The proposed development of a 150-metre turbine has been met with strong local opposition since the application was made on April 30th and this week, the local Kilcash Wind Turbine Action Group, has vowed to continue its fight regardless of the local authority’s decision.

Brian Kearney, PRO of the group, says the campaign has already received widespread support.

“We have had 115 submissions to the council regarding this planning application and we were delighted to receive so much support. The campaign against the development of the turbine went very well considering we only had around three weeks to get everything together before the deadline for submissions.

“There were submissions from the US and the UK but the vast majority came from the local community itself,” he said.

Mr. Kearney said the local group took great encouragement from a recent High Court decision to overturn An Bord Pleanála permission for a wind farm in Derryadd, Co. Longford.

According to Brian, residents are now prepared to continue their campaign whatever the outcome of the Roscommon planning decision.

“More than likely there will be a decision this week. If it’s rejected, we expect Natural Forces to appeal to An Bord Pleanála. If it’s approved then we are ready to fight the decision to the bitter end,” he said.

‘Mick’s Walk’ for Mayo Roscommon Hospice Michael (Mick) Donoghue, a well-known businessman from Fairymount, Kilrooskey, Co. Roscommon sadly passed away on March 25th of last year, at the very beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lockdown had just commenced and Mick’s eldest daughter, Maria, had travelled from the UK only to stand outside the doors of Roscommon University Hospital as Covid-19 restrictions meant she couldn’t visit him. Maria returned to the UK that same day and Mick sadly passed away just two days later.

So many families have been affected in this way throughout the pandemic so in honour of their father, Maria and Damien have arranged a fundraising walk on July 10th.

They will take on the challenge remotely with Damien walking the original route from Portiuncula Hospital to Roscommon University Hospital (43km) and Maria covering the same distance in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.

Mayo Roscommon Hospice is a cause close to the Donoghue family and they are asking for your support ahead of July 10th.

SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION God, who formed us in His imperishable image, did not intend for us to die, we hear in today’s First Reading.

Death entered the world through the devil’s envy and Adam and Eve’s sin; as a result, we are all bound to die. But in the moving story in today’s Gospel, we see Jesus liberate a little girl from the possession of death.

On one level, Mark is recounting an event that led the disciples to understand Jesus’ authority and power over even the final enemy, death (see 1 Corinthians 15:26). On another level, however, this episode is written to strengthen our hope that we too will be raised from the dead, along with all our loved ones who sleep in Christ (see 1 Corinthians 15:18).

Jesus commands the girl to “Arise!” – using the same Greek word used to describe His own resurrection (see Mark 16:6). And the consoling message of today’s Gospel is that Jesus is the resurrection and the life. If we believe in Him, even though we die, we will live (see John 15:25–26).

We are called to have the same faith as the parents in the Gospel today – praying for our loved ones, trusting in Jesus’ promise that even death cannot keep us apart. Notice the parents follow Him even though those in their own house tell them there is no hope, and even though others ridicule Jesus’ claim that the dead have only fallen asleep (see 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18).

Already in Baptism, we’ve been raised to new life in Christ. And the Eucharist, like the food given to the little girl today, is the pledge that He will raise us on the last day.

We should rejoice, as we sing in today’s Psalm, that He has brought us up from the netherworld, the pit of death. And, as Paul exhorts in today’s Epistle, we should offer our lives in thanksgiving for this gracious act, imitating Christ in our love and generosity for others.

Roscommon town Lotto player scoops €1m in Daily Million draw!

Casey’s Service Station in Roscommon town was recently confirmed as the winning location for the Daily Million top prize of €1 million on Wednesday, June 16th.

The winning Quick Pick ticket was sold on the day of the draw and the National Lottery is urging players in Roscommon to check their tickets carefully as the prize is yet to be claimed.

The winning ticket holder is advised to sign the back of their ticket and keep it in a safe place. They should contact the prize claims team on 1800-666222 or claims@lottery.ie and arrangements will be made for them to collect their prize.

Boyle Arts Festival 2021 to go ahead! < BY BRENDAN MCGEE

Well, they promised that they would be back this year and they are keeping that promise!

The Boyle Arts Festival committee is delighted to announce that BAF 2021 will take place from Thursday, August 5th, to Sunday, August 8th, with a selection of special events taking place until Saturday, August 14th.

While the main festival will be shorter this year, it will not be short on quality, and details of the very exciting programme will be announced in the coming weeks. The main Visual Art Exhibition at King House is going ahead and will run until August 31st, and de-

tails of the Local Art Exhibition will be published shortly.

With many restrictions still in place, this year’s festival will of course be a different experience, but the committee are following Covid-19 guidelines and working to ensure that all of their events will be as safe, enjoyable, and memorable as ever. Tickets for all events will be limited to the recommended, socially distanced capacity of each venue, and will only be available to purchase in advance.

It is not planned to have a festival office this year, but details of how to purchase tickets will be announced shortly. There will be no tickets on sale at events.

‘Our World Irish Aid’ award for Ballintleva NS! The Minister for Overseas Development and the Diaspora, Colm Brophy, has announced Ballintleva National School, Curraghboy, Athlone as a recipient of Highly Commended Activity Awards in the Our World Irish Aid Awards.

The school’s winning entry comprised of an online magazine, which is featured in a special printed annual magazine that will be distributed to all primary schools in Ireland and made available to the public in print version and online via ourworldirishaidawards. ie.

Minister Brophy, highlighting the extremely high standard of entries, said: “I would like to offer my warmest congratulations the teachers and pupils Ballintleva National School. As I looked at their submission, I was reminded how important it is that Irish Aid continues to help deliver on the promise of the Sustainable Development Goals – and how essential

it is that everyone makes their own contribution to this ambition”.

Minister Brophy made the announcement at a virtual award ceremony. Hundreds of pupils and teachers from primary schools across Ireland joined him online for the ceremony, which also included Daire Courtney who works for the Irish Embassy in Sierra Leone who spoke from Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, supported by Irish Aid and Joanne Nanyonjo from the Irish Embassy in Uganda who joined the ceremony from Kampala to talk about how Irish Aid helps to support refugees.

The Our World Irish Aid Awards is the flagship Global Citizenship Education initiative of Irish Aid, the Government’s official international development programme run by the Department of Foreign Affairs. Cancelled in 2020, the Awards this year moved online for the first time in their sixteen-year history, facilitating home learning.

Tibohine airshow to raise funds for two important charities The annual Tibohine FlyIn, a staple in the flying and community calendar, will take place from 1 pm to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday, June 26th and 27th (weather depending), with all proceeds going to the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice Foundation and Childhood Cancer Foundation Ireland.

The event, run by James Morrisroe and members of the Tibohine Flying Club, has raised over €30,000 for a number of charities over the last eleven years.

“We are delighted that we can hold the Fly-In this year and raise money for our chosen charities – Mayo/Roscommon Hospice and Childhood Cancer Foundation Ireland,” James Morrisroe of the Tibohine Flying Club said.

“This year, we have teamed up with Childhood Cancer Foundation Ireland, as a number of children in the Frenchpark/ Ballaghaderreen area have been diagnosed with cancer over the past few years.

The flying community have always been hugely supportive of this event.

We have worked hard to make it a safe outdoor environment for visitors, so we look forward to welcoming everyone”.

EXTENSION OF COMMERCIAL RATES WAIVER TO SECOND QUARTER 2021 (APRIL TO JUNE) The Government announced a new Rates Waiver Scheme on 27th January 2021. In March the Government agreed an extension of this scheme which will apply to specific businesses for the 2nd Quarter 2021 (April, May & June) as a continued support response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The value of the waiver is the equivalent value of 25% of the annual rate bill for 2021.

There is no application process for the rates waiver as Roscommon County Council will automatically apply the waiver to eligible rate accounts.

Excluded Categories It is important to note that there are some categories of businesses which were included in the 2020 Waiver Scheme but are now excluded in the new scheme.

raised at the Tibohine FlyIn will allow the charity to continue its work in the region.

Tibohine Airfield is located in Tibohine, not far from Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon. The organisers have worked hard to ensure that social distancing procedures will be in place both for visiting pilots and visitors on the ground. Admission for spectators and families is a minimum donation of €5, all of which goes to the two chosen charities. There will be a BBQ on both days and lots of fun for all the family.

It is safe to say that for most people, the words ‘Mica’ and ‘Pyrite’ would have meant very little, and even if we had heard about them, we’d have hardly any knowledge of what they were. However, in recent times, everywhere we look we hear about Mica and Pyrite, and even if we are still unclear as to exactly what they are, we now know enough to realise that those two words have brought unbelievable heartbreak, misery, stress, and devastation to thousands of Irish people – most particularly in the Counties of Donegal and Mayo.

By now, the whole country is aware of the massive problems caused to almost 6,000 homes around the west and northwest, which were built with defective blocks. It seems to me, however, that as a nation, we are letting down the thousands of affected families.

A recent report by an engineering group recommended that all the houses be demolished, and that gives rise to lots of hard questions; the Government’s redress scheme only covers 90% of the rebuilding costs, and very simple maths show that the homeowners (who are already suffering greatly, as their dream houses fall apart before their very eyes) will also face extreme financial hardship if the scheme is not upgraded to the full 100%.

As well as that, the owners have to pay €5,000 to have checks carried out to ascertain that their houses are Mica or Pyrite affected before they can apply for the redress scheme. There also appears to be the possibility that planning permission must be sought again, even though the new house (if it’s ever built)

Walk in aid of Glinsk Defibrillator Group If ever any event raised awareness of a particular topic, the recent near tragedy that befell Danish footballer Christian Eriksen certainly brought into clear focus the importance of having life-saving equipment, especially defibrillators, available at sporting and other events all over the world. With this in mind, closer to home, Stacey and Gerdina Kelly of the Glinsk Defibrillator Group plan to walk from Glinsk NS to Knock Shrine (a distance of over 40km) to raise funds for the group.

It is vitally important that communities have access to AED/Defibrillators, and that people are trained to use them, and the funds raised will go towards purchasing new batteries, ongoing maintenance of the existing defibrillators in the area, annual insurance, and to provide for upcoming training courses.

The walk will take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend, and they have set up a GoFundMe page.

So if you can, make a donation, big or small, and help to reach the stated goal of €5,000.

As they say, you never know when you might need a defibrillator, and already, having them in our communities has saved many lives, so support them if at all possible. All funds raised will be published on the Glinsk Defib Facebook page and in the Parish newsletter.

On the assumption that the new house costs €200,000 to build, it means the homeowner is already down €20,000 plus the €5,000 it costs to carry out the compulsory checks. Then of course, the question arises as to who pays for the demolition and disposal of the remains of the old house. No matter what way we look at it, the 90%

scheme is totally unfair on the people who have already suffered so much, and it’s made all the more so because in Dublin the Government paid the full 100% rebuilding costs to anyone who was affected by similar problems.

Of course, even if they are looked after and everything else is in place - who will build all these thousands of houses? A friend of mine in the building trade tells me firstly

that it is almost impossible to get skilled tradesmen, and secondly, prices are literally going through the roof, with building materials getting more and more expensive. You don’t have to be a genius to figure out that the longer this drags on, the more expensive the bill will be, and the more stress and strain will be heaped on the innocent householders.

A fine Outdoor Dining mess!

For those of us lucky enough and old enough to remember Hall’s Pictorial Weekly (a satirical TV show set in the fictional town of Ballymagash that ran for seven or eight years in the 70s), I can only imagine what the great political characters like Councillor O’Hooligan, the Minister for Hardship, or Richie Ruin himself, would’ve made of the monumental mess our present Government has made in relation to the new outdoor seating areas that have been set up outside pubs and restaurants all round the country.

Despite the fact that we are all being encouraged to “think outdoors”, and despite the fact that councils have set up these outdoor seating areas, and publicans have gone to great expense to make them as comfortable and welcoming as possible, it seems that, as they are outside the licensed premises, they are

acting illegally in allowing their customers to drink outside.

Thankfully, it seems that Gardaí are allowed to use their discretion in this instance, but nonetheless, a number of Galway pubs were told last Thursday night that they were breaking the law.

Pubs and restaurants have had a horrendous time for well over a year now, so you would have thought that all the Ts would have been crossed and the Is would have been dotted before the outdoor seating arrangements were put in place. Obviously this is not the case, and I’m sure it would’ve caused great controversy at the Ballymagash weekly Council meeting – and maybe resurrected the career of the Minister for Hardship. Certainly the pubs know all about hardship, so maybe it’s time to bring him back!

that should land on the Government’s lap, and by extension, on our citizens’ collective laps, but this is such an extreme case that, in my opinion, we have to look after our own countrymen and women.

Without any more nonsense or excuses we must find the money to sort out this mess once and for all. We managed to find billions of euros for the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP), including, apparently, for some people who should never have got the full weekly amount. It’s time the Government went to the well again to bail out the 6,000 homeowners who have been devastated and destroyed by circumstances outside of their control.

The bad news is that the Government now fear that there may be as many as 12,000 homes affected, which makes the problem even bigger, but regardless of how many there are, we must look after them all and put an end to their never-ending suffering and frustration.

Finally for this week …

Sport can be extremely cruel. Just over two weeks ago, Spanish golfer John Rahm suffered a devastating blow when he tested positive for Covid-19 just as he was about to play his final round in the Memorial tournament, where he held an amazing six-shot lead. He ended up having to withdraw completely from the tournament. While nothing can be certain, it is almost inconceivable that Rahm wouldn’t have won, and therefore, he almost certainty missed out on a payday of $1.7 million, which – no matter how wealthy he is – is still a sizeable sum.

And so, last weekend he managed to bounce back and win the US Open after the heartbreak of two weeks ago. After having to isolate for ten days, winning the competition must rank with some of the greatest sporting achievements, and even though he hardly gets the Roscommon People (Ed – We don’t know this for certain!), I have to offer him my heartiest congratulations.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I was very pleased to receive a lovely (and informative) note from Barry Molloy, one of the county town’s true gentlemen, in response to our recent publication of a photograph of Roscommon’s All-Ireland Minor Football title winners of 1951.

As readers will recall, the photo – one of a series we are publishing on this page and online – was from the Golden Jubilee celebrations of that team’s success. In 2011, 50 years on from their All-Ireland minor glory, the team was honoured at Dr. Hyde Park.

Barry Molloy, still hale and hearty, was captain of that team in 1951. I am grateful to Barry for dropping me a note recently with some fascinating reflections on that success 70 years ago. (I was also delighted to hear that twelve members of the panel of 1951 are, as Barry puts it, “still with us”).

Here’s some of what Barry wrote: “Hi Paul…thank you for the ‘memory of 1951’ in the Roscommon People. A lot has changed in those 70 years!

“It was the first time to be in Dublin for most of the team. We were in the shadow of World War II, and everything was rationed…including petrol, bread, butter, tea, sugar, etc.

“We have twelve members of the panel still with us. The All-Ireland final was played in Croke Park on December 16th, 1951. Unlike last week, we beat Armagh in bright sunshine, before about 1200 spectators.

“We had 5 student priests on our panel up to the Connacht final and 3 for the AllIreland semi-final – 2 were not allowed out of College to play.

“Fr. Pat Muldoon (Donamon) has served all his ministry in South Korea. I spoke to him last month. Fr. Dominic Gillooly

(Mount Cashel) is retired in Sligo. Ten of the panel attended CBS Roscommon, a successful nursery for footballers in that era. 5 or 6 of the locally-based players meet each December to reminisce and renew friendships.

“The game itself is so different now. In those days, it was ‘catch and kick’ and the approach was to stay in your position for most of the game. John Rafferty (from what became the Royal Hotel) kicked a point for Armagh, then scored a point for Roscommon!”

Thanks Barry for these very interesting reflections, which I know readers will find fascinating. This is social history speaking to us! Continued good health to Barry and the remaining heroes of 1951. We fondly remember those who have passed on. They brought glory to our county, they live on in the pages of history.

Love Love Island? Count me out!

As someone who has absolutely no patience for people who have the intellect and the depth of a car park puddle, I have to say I’ve never, ever watched more than ten minutes of the TV ‘dating show’ Love Island. Why? Because, apart from the fact it’s a series showcasing hormone-packed, mildly attractive wannabes, desperate to flaunt their fake-tanned boobs, butts, abs and pecs, Love Island is also, in my opinion, crammed full of spite, emotional manipulation, and sexual objectification – not just those who appear on it, but also (many of) those who watch it! You get it; I’m not a fan.

To be honest, I actually worry about the demographic who buy into the personas of the Ken doll look-a-like male participants with their gravity-defying undercut hairstyles, and the Barbie-esque females with

Gender-based violence on the increase across Ireland According to domestic abuse charity Women’s Aid, the number of people who contacted their support service ‘increased by over 40% last year compared to 2019’.

This tells me that every day in some part of this country, someone is living under the oppression of an abusive intimate partner. In fact, shockingly, as you and I are trying to make sense of this pandemic and its restrictions, somewhere in some corner of County Roscommon, a woman (because it’s mainly women who’re reporting high levels of abuse from their partners) and her children (if she has children), is cowering in a room. This woman is terrified. She also may be bruised and battered and struggling to process what has just happened and why it has just happened…indeed, she’s possibly wondering what it is she did wrong. The answer is nothing – you did nothing wrong.

You are the innocent, blameless victim of an abusive coward, who has, according to national figures (these are not solely focused on Roscommon, they represent the entire country), either raped you, beat you, or choked you.

In fact, according to statistics, 148 women have been abused while pregnant, with 28 of them having suffered a miscarriage as a result of the abuse.

In addition, 709 women have been threatened with murder. Let me repeat – these statistics represent the entire country, not just Roscommon, meaning disgracefully, domestic abuse is rampant and the situation is escalating.

Violence against women tends to get worse during stressful situations, i.e. the pandemic.

This means, as there is a decrease in accessing vital services and protective networks, the risk to women’s lives is exacerbated, resulting in both them and their children becoming more vulnerable; and that’s not acceptable.

Can I make it clear that I am not ‘man-bashing’? I do know, having been raised in an abusive home, that sadly men can also be victims of domestic violence. And yes, the number does appear to be small, and when compared to women, it is small. Nonetheless, have you ever thought that this could be due to many

their humidity-defying hair extensions who display themselves on national TV in a quest for fame, fortune, and er, love!

However, given that any relationship formed on this reality show is almost certainly doomed to fail, it’s kind of a no-brainer that participants are going to be offered what ITV have claimed will be a ‘minimum of eight therapy sessions’ to help them deal with the fall-out.

Personally, I think viewers who allow themselves to be influenced by pouting glamour models prancing around and pairing up with failed footballers wearing nothing but a fluorescent thong in a bid to avoid eviction from the island, are the ones who could benefit from having some therapy.

In addition readers, as we ready ourselves to return to the workplace, my advice to people like me who hate this type of show is to prepare themselves to be plagued by their normally sane and intelligent colleagues to inquire if they’re “watchin’ Love Island?” In fact, gird your emotional intellect to help it receive terms like ‘f***y flutters’ and ‘chin-wag’ because these phrases are guaranteed to sneak back into the office vernacular!

And no, I am not a killjoy, nor am I incapable of becoming distracted by quirky programmes. I do have fun, and I do enjoy a good laugh-out-loud comedy.

In fact, I absolutely thrive on watching TV quiz shows, and apparently ‘ruining the outcome for others’ when I shout out the answers before the questions are even finished. My bad! It’s just the vapid, vacuous programmes that I always avoid!

Perhaps I’m just jealous. Perhaps I’d be much happier and wealthier if, in my twenties, instead of working 24/7 to raise a family, I’d have instead, lived a life full of hedonism and shallowness.

I mean, if you’re to believe shows like Love Island, this type of behaviour is being richly rewarded with wealth, influence, notoriety.

The future is gender fluid

Freeing yourself from an abusive, spineless, puny lowlife, who will never change, won’t be easy, but remember – deep down, you are still that strong, powerful girl who sets her own rules for how she will be treated. You are still that wonderful, glorious woman, who, along with your precious children, has a right to live a safe and happy life. Remember, you make the rules for how you want your body, your soul and your mind to be treated – not him, not her.

Therefore, if today is the day you get the courage

to set your boundaries and recover your power because you are a survivor, know that help is literally a phone call away. You are amazing and I wish you the very best of luck and happiness, because you deserve it. You have earned it. May God bless you.

Meanwhile over at the Emmys, nominees are being given the option of using the gender-neutral term ‘performer’. In addition, winners can request a genderneutral option of their statue or statuette – brilliant, bravo, maith thú!

Everyone has a right to belong, and I think it’s wonderful that many people, and in particular the younger generation, are viewing gender as being a choice, as opposed to it being a given, and as being a distinction. Indeed many people are claiming that gender doesn’t even exist at all and I think that’s wonderful.

However – and again, remember I am a huge ally when it comes to embracing and promoting diversity and equality – I do have to ask: is it just me readers, or does anyone else think there’s convulsive fit of political correctness infiltrating society as a whole?

A soccer surprise: How my young cousins got me (sort of) addicted to Euro 2020!

I have caught a nasty contagious disease. Or rather, less dramatically, my young D’Alton cousins, who are addicted to the UEFA Euro soccer championship currently going on, have measles-like passed on their passion for this football festival to me. And I can’t stop scratching this irritating, annoying itch.

Teenage cousins Oscar and Seamus, much to my previous chagrin, are less interested in rugby than the sight of eleven woosies pompadoring their way across some green field.

I’m hardly the hardiest of bucks, but if I blew a kiss at these soccer prima donnas, they’d fall over – writhing, spiralling in agony, roaring and screaming – and then 10 seconds later they’d be back up on their feet running with the spring of a newly-born foal in their step.

So, let’s just say I used to loath soccer. Rugby and horse racing are the true ‘Sports of Kings’, certainly for me. Win or lose (sadly too often the latter), seeing 15 Irish men and women putting on the green jersey always, no exaggeration, brings a tear to my eye and

catches a frog in my throat.

But my young cousins’ enthusiasm for the current UEFA Euro tournament has become infectious. They tell me that Macedonia and Pomerania or Bulgaria or the Man in the Moon (who cares?) are playing, so I willingly for the first time ever sit down and watch it for 90 tortuous minutes, deciding which side deserves to win.

It’s televisual sado-masochism. I even now know the name of the Turkish goalkeeper and his soccer career history (Mert Günok, just in case you were wondering).

I was, by my cousins, further informed that England, God help us, were playing Croatia the other evening.

So, encouraged by the D’Alton household in Kilrooskey, I got everything prepared to hopefully see the Auld Enemy thrashed, bacon and cabbage and lovely bottle of wine all set to watch the spectacle of English disaster.

Not only did that thrashing not happen (England won 1-0) but I had to endure possibly the most tedious hour and a half I’ve ever tolerated. I’m going to get a bank loan and charge soccer fans to pay me

and come and watch paint dry for 90 minutes, and see which pastime is more compelling.

I’m sure the Local Enterprise Office will think it’s a winner.

What amazed me also as I watched the England/Croatia match on British TV, is that

every time an England player passed the ball or did some tackle, the TV commentators were breathily orgasmic with praise such as “brilliant”, “stunning”, “superb” or “breathtaking”. And here was I thinking the English rugby TV commen-

tators were prejudiced enough!

So, okay, my fixation with this soccer spectacle will continue for now, and only for now.

Personally, and like one of our grandmothers trying to pick a horse at the Grand National, my money’s on France. But

what do I know? Well…quite a lot I like to think now.

That said, one thing I absolutely, in concrete, know is that please, please bring forward the rugby Six Nations. Ah, then we’ll be talking. Because then we’re talking about real sport.

Anna Spearman exhibition opens at the Roscommon Arts Centre An exhibition by artist Anna Spearman entitled ‘Loose Part’s will open in Roscommon Arts Centre’s Gallery Space from Tuesday, June 29th, until July 30th.

Anna, using a range of materials and processes, makes sculptural objects and installations, and her studio is a testing ground where her day-to-day encounters with the material world are filtered through a kind of three-dimensional meandering.

‘Loose Part’s is a newly com-

missioned work by Roscommon Arts Centre, which draws on the theory of ‘Loose Parts’ developed by Simon Nicholson in 1971. This theory promotes the importance of open-ended and creative play in early childhood experience.

Anna currently works at a studio in The Model, Sligo. She has an MA in Fine Art: Contemporary Practice from Falmouth University, a BA in Fine Art from Sligo IT and a BA in History of Art and Sociology from Trinity College Dublin. She has

had solo exhibitions in the Customs House Gallery in Westport and the Hyde Bridge Gallery in Sligo.

The 2021 Visual Art programme at Roscommon Arts Centre, curated by Naomi Draper, continues to explore the potential of relationships between humans and other matter through a series of related events and engagement opportunities.

As part of Anna’s exhibition, this engagement involves investigating the materials, ob-

jects and processes once vital to our everyday and domestic encounters through the craft of rushwork.

Using materials harvested from our local landscape and sharing a traditional practice of making, local craftsperson Patricia O’Flaherty will share her craft through a one-day basketmaking course.

Iconic Camino offers free luxury retreats for healthcare workers Iconic Camino – an Irish company offering retreats at some of Ireland’s most breath-taking locations – is teaming up with businesses to offer frontline healthcare workers a free three-day retreat at Notre Dame Global Centre at Kylemore Abbey in County Galway.

The ‘Heroes’ Retreat’ programme has been designed as a practical way to thank and support people who gave so much of their time and energy to battle the pandemic in Ireland since early last year.

The focus will be on offering ‘Rest, Relaxation and Recovery’. The retreat’s itinerary will mirror the existing ‘Connemino Wellness Programme’ at magical Kylemore Abbey, which is billed as the perfect way to indulge yourself with nourishing food, gentle hikes and amazing nature.

Roscommon students urged to apply for accounting apprenticeship Roscommon students have been encouraged to apply for a national accounting technician apprenticeship programme, which will create jobs in the region as part of 125 positions nationally. Local employers have also been encouraged to sign up for the scheme to avail of a Government annual base grant per-registered apprentice from early 2022.

The Accounting Technicians Ireland Apprenticeship is a funded, workbased learning programme in which locally-placed apprentices earn at least €19,890 per annum. Applications for the apprenticeship, which will be based at colleges in Galway, Dublin, Monaghan, Wicklow, Cork, Limerick and Waterford, are now open.

Accounting Technicians Ireland, whose apprenticeship programme has been the source of over 456 jobs, has embraced blended learning. The apprenticeship allows students to spend four days a week working, often online with the agreement of the employer since the pandemic, and one day a

week studying. School leavers, Leaving Cert students, career changers and mature learners can all apply for the programme through Accounting Technicians Ireland.

This is the third year of the National Gallery of Ireland’s participation in the programme, and according to Mary Leane, its head of finance, it is a great way to upskill: “Apprentices are not just gaining a qualification, they are also learning work-based skills which they can continue to build on throughout their career.

“Apprentices are delighted with the opportunity to earn as they learn, while gaining practical experience in the workplace. The Accounting Technician Apprenticeship works for both the younger and more mature student.

There are many reasons why someone may not have completed formal training earlier in their career, and the apprenticeship provides an opportunity to progress into new roles and areas”.

For the purposes of the competition, a ‘frontline healthcare worker’ is defined as anyone working in direct patient care in the health service during 2020 and 2021.

Concerns raised over Bord na Móna jobs Just two out of every five jobs promised within Bord na Móna for bog rehabilitation work across the midland counties have been filled, according to a Dáil reply received by Independent TD Denis Naughten.

“This rehabilitation work on the bogs was specifically funded to secure short term employment for Bord na Móna workers, but only a fraction of seasonal workers have been offered employment with just 152 jobs offered to date out of 350 potential positions,” stated Denis Naughten.

“As we move into the height of what was traditionally peat harvesting season, with so few seasonal staff employed, there is growing concern locally with regard to the bog rehabilitation process. There are also instances where there have been concerns expressed by local landowners

regarding the level of engagement on the impact that these works could have on existing farmland.

“In 2019, I proposed that the Government would introduce and a bog restoration programme to protect existing jobs in Bord na Móna in the short term, pending the reconfiguration of the company. I am glad the Government took on board my proposal, which resulted in Cabinet approval last year of a €108 million large-scale peatland restoration project by Bord na Móna that will create 350 jobs.

“However, there is an on-going lack of progress in recruiting the 280 seasonal workers – all of whom were laid off by the company last year. These seasonal staff cannot just be thrown aside and have no clarity on what their future holds, this is just not good enough,” the local TD concluded.

The newly formed Athlone Food Network will shine a light on the superb quality and choice of food in the Athlone area. Under a steering group led by chairperson Deirdre Adamson (Glasson Lakehouse) and vice-chairperson John Coffey (Thyme Restaurant) the fledgling network has secured CEDRA funding to begin its programme.

The inaugural virtual AGM (on Zoom) will be held on Monday, June 28th at 11 am and everyone in a food production or service business within the Athlone area is invited to attend.

“Athlone has amazing food and food

producers - we just need to let Ireland know about it. This network will draw together everyone involved so we can send out a cohesive message all over the country. One of the first steps will be to produce a comprehensive food and producers directory ” said chairperson Deirdre Adamson.

Over the last few months, a series of five workshops have given people in every sector of the food industry a chance to have their voice heard. This included producers and markets, restaurants, gastro pubs, cafés, hotels and tours or activities with a food connec-

tion. The initial database includes almost 100 businesses and the network hopes to add significantly to this. The network has also developed a compelling food story for Athlone, which will form the basis of promotional activity.

This exciting new initiative to promote Athlone food was instigated by Athlone Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Destination Athlone and funded

by Westmeath County Council.

Ifac advice for farmers on ‘Right to Disconnect’ Ifac, Ireland’s farming, food and agribusiness specialist professional services firm, is advising Roscommon farmers and SMEs to work together with their employees when developing their Right to Disconnect Policy.

Earlier this year, the Workplace Relations Committee (WRC) published a Code of Practice on the Right to Disconnect from work outside of normal working hours.

The Code acknowledges that different working arrangements suit different businesses but says that the right to maintain clear boundaries between work and leisure is universal.

Mary McDonagh, Head of Payroll Services at ifac said: “It is important that farm employers and SMEs familiarise themselves with the Code and

work together with their employees when developing an appropriate Right to Disconnect policy for their business to ensure it takes account of both business needs and the wellbeing of their workforce”.

While failure to follow the code is not an offence if disputes arise relevant provisions of the code will likely be taken into account by Adjudicators or Chairpersons in WRC or Labour Court cases involving issues such as dismissal, penalisation and/or equality discrimination.

The Right to Disconnect code sets out three key elements of the right to disconnect including the right for employees not to work outside normal hours; the right not to be penalised for refusing to attend work matters outside those hours; and

the duty to respect another person’s right to disconnect.

The code recommends that employers engage with their employees to develop a Right to Disconnect Policy that accommodates their business needs. The policy needs to take into account relevant health and safety legislation, the statutory obligations of employers and employees, and employees’ terms and conditions of employment.

When developing your policy, it is important to emphasise the expectation that staff disconnect from work outside of their normal working hours and during annual leave. The policy should also allow for occasional legitimate situations where it may be necessary to contact staff outside of normal working hours.

Once you have your policy in place, it should be referenced in your employees’ terms and conditions of employment and read in conjunction with your other employment policies.

A procedure for your employees to raise concerns should be included in your Right to Disconnect policy. Examples of concerns that may arise include being contacted regularly outside of normal work hours, being expected to regularly work through breaks or being penalised for not being available out of normal working hours.

Guidance for addressing concerns and resolving workplace issues that may arise is also included in the Code.

A sample Right to Disconnect Policy layout and template clauses is available on the WRC website.

ICMSA slams ‘lack of recognition’ for farming in Climate Action Bill The President of ICMSA has written to TDs expressing the association’s deep concerns in relation to the proposed Climate Action Bill and its potential impact on the Irish agriculture sector.

Pat McCormack explained that as the farm organisation most associated with Ireland’s unique family farm model, the organisation is particularly anxious about the Bill’s impact on the pillar support of rural Ireland.

Mr. McCormack noted three main concerns: what he characterised as the overall ‘anti-farm’ direction of the Climate Action Bill; the absence of any clear economic analysis of highly probable effects, and its proposal to effectively hand over the decision making of this critical matter to an unelected council.

He said that any one of these concerns would require detailed response from the Government and

supporters of the Bill, but “taken together – and unanswered as they presently are - we think it grossly irresponsible and reckless to allow passage of the Bill as it stands”.

Mr. McCormack added: “It is simply unacceptable that Ireland’s biggest and most successful indigenous economic activity – farming and food production – is casually endangered in the way it most assuredly is by this Climate Action Bill. You (TDs) must ensure that adequate protections for our farming and wider agri-food sector are included in the Climate Action Bill before it is passed through the Oireachtas”.

The ICMSA President insisted that Irish farmers recognise their environmental obligations and were to respond as speedily and effectively as resources and research allow.

“We cannot accept the idea that our sector, usually the only meaningful

commercial activity in our districts (and your constituencies), can be shut-down with the thousands of individuals and families involved being told to ‘diversify’ where no such opportunity exist,” he added.

Mr. McCormack said there is now overwhelming evidence for stating that the Climate Action Bill, as

currently structured, will squeeze family farming out of the sector.

“Farmers are not seeking a ‘pass’; we understand the climate challenge and are already engaged in the transition to lower emissions and more sustainable practices. However, the unique position of agriculture and food production needs to be recognised, as

acknowledged in the Paris Accord.

“The Bill, as currently structured, most assuredly does not recognise the unique role of Irish agriculture and will have a completely destructive effect on Irish farming families – and on the rural communities that those families backbone,” he said.

Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice says the passage of the Climate Bill through Dáil Éireann is “an attack on rural Ireland” and that farmers and those who must commute to work need to realise how their local representatives voted.

The Roscommon Galway TD also claims the Bill is going to be “detrimental” for democracy in Ireland.

“The parties will say that representatives will have an input on the sectorial emission ceilings, but the reality is that the Minister can overrule them if a target cannot be agreed.

“The Climate Change Advisory Council is going to have a significant say moving forward when it comes to these targets. As it stands, we have a member of that council who has openly called for cuts to the national herd – despite all of the evidence against the merits of this proposal. It is imperative that the make-up of this council fairly represents the population of Ireland and that rural Ireland and the agriculture sector is fairly represented on it,” he said.

Deputy Fitzmaurice said that a situation cannot be allowed to develop where the bulk of the council is made of “professors and academics who have no experience of what goes on in rural Ireland”.

“I have said repeatedly that Ireland is staring down the barrel of potential energy blackouts by 2026 if we continue down this road. The Greens continue to harp on about the move to renewable energy. But building offshore wind farms takes time, and it will be years before they are up and running. Hydrogen technology is still a few years away from being viable,” he said.

The Roscommon Galway TD claimed that data centres in Dublin had been forced to order “tanker loads of oil” because the ESB cannot guarantee a power supply.

“We are importing peat and briquettes from abroad, while Bord na Móna is being forced to cease its peat harvesting operations. We are reducing our ability to create power, but we are pushing to retrofit homes and increase the number of electric cars on the road – but where will the power come from to heat these homes or drive these cars?”

Deputy Fitzmaurice added that there was very little evidence of a ‘just transition’ and questioned where new jobs would come from to replace those lost through Bord na Móna closures.

“This Climate Bill will be detrimental for rural Ireland in particular, and I cannot understand how rural TDs from the likes of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael could have voted in favour of this,” he concluded.

Bill did not receive proper scrutiny - IFA IFA President Tim Cullinan

IFA President Tim Cullinan has expressed his disappointment this week after the Climate Action Bill was passed by Dáil Éireann without any proposed amendments being accepted

by Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan.

“There were 111 amendments to be decided, but the debate was guillotined as the second

amendment was being discussed. It’s an affront to democracy,” he said.

“Over the last few weeks, IFA has received assurances from Government TDs that the concerns we have raised are addressed implicitly in the Bill.

We believe the Bill would have benefitted from the further clarity that our proposed

amendments would have brought.

“However, we will hold the Minister and Government deputies to undertakings they have given, particularly in relation to carbon budgets taking account of sequestration as well as emissions,” he added.

Mr. Cullinan said the IFA would fight to ensure farmers can

continue to earn a living without cutting back on livestock numbers.

“Farmers will continue to play our part on climate action by adopting technologies which reduce methane and contribute positively to water quality and biodiversity. But targets for our sector must be realistic and achievable,” he concluded.

European Court of Auditors accused of making ‘wild accusations’ Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice has accused the European Court of auditors of making “wild accusations” as part of a recent report published on the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

Deputy Fitzmaurice said: “The original purpose of the CAP was to support farmers to produce food in order to make it more accessible and affordable for people right across Europe. However, a recent

report from the European Court of Auditors claims that despite spending over €100 billion of EU funds on climate action in the past seven years, greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture have not decreased since 2010.

“Given that the primary purpose of the CAP is to support farmers to produce food, it is disingenuous for the Court of Auditors to claim that the EU Commission needs to take

action against agriculture to address the supposed lack of progress on reducing emissions. If they wish to bring the environment into it, then the budget should be increased to reflect this.

“One would imagine that the European Court of Auditors would be more concerned with properly signing off on the EU’s budget than making such claims on the CAP,” Fitzmaurice concluded.

ESB wasting €176 million on power plant demolitions – Naughten Independent TD Denis Naughten has described the ESB’s decision to demolish the Lough Ree and West Offaly power plants as, “wasting an opportunity for local jobs as well as €176 million of charges paid by electricity customers”.

Deputy Naughten said the decision was in the best interests of the company and not those living in rural Ireland.

“If anyone was in doubt about this approach, they only need to look at the €5 million that the ESB re-announced last week to go into the Just Transition Fund.

What the ESB has failed to say is that it sought to recoup that €5 million from every family in the country through their electricity bill. They will now seek to pay for the cost of the demolition of the existing power stations from electricity customers, many of whom are struggling to pay their electricity bills,” Naughten said.

“These two power plants had ten years of operational lifespan left and the Government’s own Just Transition Commissioner Kieran Mulvey described the plants as being in pristine condition.

“So, when these plants are demolished, it is effectively wasting €176 million of electricity customers’ money in lost operational capacity, which every single

family in this country will have to pay for again through their electricity bills.

“I have made these points consistently with the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and Minister for the Environment over the last year on the floor of Dáil Éireann reminding them that we have seen similar mistakes made in the past with the demolition of our two sugar plants in Mallow and Carlow, which I argued against at the time”.

The Independent TD claimed the ESB is compromised when it comes to independently assessing the future of the plants.

“The current structure of electricity charges effectively incentivises the ESB to demolish the plants. Because of its vested interest in both of the sites - which is not necessarily in the interest of the taxpayer, the local community or electricity customers across the country – Government should have ensured a completely independent review of all potential options for the two plants rather than just accepting the ESB plan.

“Let’s not repeat the mistakes we made in our sugar industry in Mallow and Carlow. Government. Even at this late stage, we must not let these power plants be demolished until all possible alternatives have been fully and independently explored,” he concluded.

There was a good entry of stock presented at last week’s sale on June 17th. Sellers went home happy as all three rings reported an excellent trade, with prices and demand maintained for all categories of stock.

Both the bullock and heifer rings reported excellent clearance, with the bullocks peaking at €2.68 a kilo and the heifers reaching €3.11 a kilo.

The weanling rings, with better quality lots on offer this week, saw the bulls reach €3.25 a kilo while the heifers peaked at €3.50 a kilo.

The dry cows trade remained strong this week, with lots making up to €2,020, while €2,120 was paid for a Charolais cow and her Limousin heifer calf at foot.

There were fewer calves presented for sale this week, but a flier of a trade was on offer with lots making from €110 to €700 for stronger runner types.

Concerns raised over UKAustralia deal

IFA President Tim Cullinan said the proposed trade deal between the UK and Australia sets a perilous precedent and is very concerning for Irish beef farmers.

“Apart from the extra checks that will apply following the trade agreement reached last December, the threat to our markets is the biggest fallout for Irish farmers from the vote nearly five years ago,” he said.

“It’s precisely the dangerous scenario that we have signalled following the Brexit vote in June, 2016. Trade deals between the UK and third countries have the potential to undermine what is a very important market for our beef exports”.

The Presidents of the IFA and NFU held a bilateral meeting recently to discuss the implications of the deal.

Tim Cullinan said he supported the NFU in highlighting their concerns about the standards that apply to imports from third countries.

“We have worked closely with NFU since the Brexit vote nearly five years ago. Farmers here and in the UK are committed to the highest standards and we are opposed to any trade deal that gives an opening to sub-standard food imports.

“Total beef exports last year were €1.9 billion, with 44 percent going to the UK market.

“It’s our most valuable market, in terms of volume and price. Any loss of shelf space would be very damaging for our livestock farmers, who are in a low-income sector,” he said.

Roscommon MART WATCH The numbers on offer at our cattle sale on Friday, June 18th, were similar to the previous week, with a great trade for all classes and only five cattle left unsold.

Bullocks averaged from €2.46 per kilo up to €3.20 per kilo, heifers fetched from an average of €2.49 per kilo up to €3.23 per kilo, and dry cows made from an average of €2.13 per kilo up to €2.63 per kilo. The top prices for dry cows were as follows: Char weighing 815kgs sold at €2,000 (€1,185 over its weight), and BBX weighing 730kgs sold for €1,920 (€1,190 over its weight).

At 11 am on Friday, June 25th, we will have our special sale of heifers, and general sale of bullocks, wean-

lings, suckler cows and dry cows.

There was a similar entry of sheep on offer at our sheep sale on Wednesday, June 23rd, with a slight dip in trade for spring lambs.

Spring lambs made up to €145 for 52.5kgs, and stag ewes made up to €175.

People shouldn’t be forced to retire at 65 – Kerrane Sinn Féin TD and party spokesperson on Social Protection Claire Kerrane has welcomed the passing of her Dáil Motion this week calling for the abolition of mandatory retirement.

Deputy Kerrane said: “This Mo-

tion debated in the Dáil on Tuesday evening had two main asks – firstly, to end the ridiculous situation where those retiring at the age of 65 are being put on a jobseekers’ rate of payment (a loss of over €2,300 in the year), and secondly, to put an end to

the notion that a person can no longer do their job because they are 65.

“These workers have worked hard all their lives, paid their taxes, paid into the system – some for 30, 40 and more years – and they deserve their pension at the full rate

at retirement.

“This Motion is not about seeking a retirement age of 65, it is seeking the restoration of what was the State Pension Transition, abolished in 2014, so that those retiring at 65 receive a pension rate of payment.

Local schools included in Safe Routes Programme News that local schools have been selected for inclusion in the first round of the Safe Routes to School Programme to support walking and cycling infrastructure has been welcomed by local representatives this week.

Five schools in County Roscommon have been included: Carrick NS, Ballinlough; Colaiste Chiarán in Summerhill, Athlone; SN Cruachain, Croghan via Boyle; St. Joseph’s NS, Summerhill, Athlone and St. Paul’s NS, Castlerea.

Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan welcomed the announcement this week.

“For schools that didn’t get through this round of funding, there will be a rolling call for those who have applied. With over 931 applications from schools, it shows the urgent need for funding of safe travel in this area,” she said.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy said the programme aims to create safer walking and cycling routes

within communities and relieve congestion at school gates.

“Improvements range from an upgraded footpath or new cycle lane to the complete reworking of the road outside a school’s entrance,” he said.

Fine Gael Minister of State Frank Feighan said he was “delighted to see many of our local schools benefitting from this new scheme”.

He echoed assurances that there would be a rolling programme to facilitate all schools that had applied.

Funding of over €11,000 has been allocated for a Famine exhibition at Strokestown Park House, as part of a series of small grants for local and regional museums, announced by Minister Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin.

Fianna Fáil Senator Murphy said that an exhibition entitled ‘Famine to Freedom’ at Strokestown Park House was being allocated €11,150 as part of the grants for local and regional museums.

“This funding for County Roscommon is most welcome and will help to enhance the exhibitions at Strokestown Park relating to the Famine and improve the overall visitor experience. Local museums are very important in communities throughout the country, and they are a significant resource for culture and heritage in our towns.

“As people begin to move around the country again, and with staycations becoming very popular for the foreseeable future, it is great to see this level of funding to help to bring new features in our local museums”.

Welcoming the news this week, Fine Gael Minister of State Frank Feighan said local museums are an extremely important resource for culture and heritage in villages and towns across the country.

“As they re-open and recover, our cultural bodies can again offer their exhibitions and presentations along with the interesting new features for which support is being provided today,” he said.

Fallen hero honoured at Castlerea ceremony A memorial service took place in Castlerea last Saturday to honour brave Detective Garda Colm Horkan, who was shot dead while on duty in the town on June 17th, 2020.

The ceremony was led by Detective Horkan’s family alongside Garda Commissioner Drew Harris; Assistant Commissioner Barry O’Brien; Superintendent Tom Colsh; Superintendent Goretti Sheridan and Minister of State James Browne.

Members of An Garda Síochána marched from

Castlerea Garda Station to the junction of St. Patrick’s Street and Main Street, where Detective Horkan lost his life last June. There, Detective Horkan’s father, Marty, unveiled a plaque in memory of his son.

The plaque was blessed by Castlerea Parish Priest, Fr. John McManus, who had administered last rites to Detective Horkan last June.

Superintendent Goretti Sheridan, who was the Superintendent in Castlerea on the night of Detective Horkan’s killing, spoke of the devastation among

his colleagues following his death and a void that “would never be filled”.

“We gathered at this spot on that night and we were with Colm as he passed away. This is a night that none of us will ever forget,” she said.

Detective Horkan’s colleagues had planted a memorial garden in his memory at Castlerea Garda Station. Garda Commissioner Drew Harris unveiled a plaque at this location in his memory, and that of Detective Garda John Morley and Garda

Assistant Commissioner Barry O’Brien, reflecting on the qualities of the three men, said they had each demonstrated “courage, integrity, diligence and an overriding sense of duty”.

Drew Harris said he had devoted his life to the people of Ireland and especially the people of Roscommon and Mayo.

The Commissioner said: “In a life that was cut short, he had already made a significant impact on the lives of so many people and that’s why his absence has been so strongly felt over the past year and will continue to be felt by those who knew and loved him

for many years to come.

“The people in his native Charlestown, a place he was so passionate about, especially his family and the GAA club, the people of Ballaghaderreen, and of Castlerea where he had worked as a Garda for almost 24 years. They have all lost a compassionate voice of comfort and support, and a committed and jovial teammate”.

Increased demand for apprentices According to City of Dublin Education and Training Board, demand among the industry for apprentices is increasing. 231 apprentic-

es from 17 counties across Ireland are currently in training or have graduated from the programme since it was launched in 2018.

Last year, 86 apprentices were hired by auctioneering and property services through the CDETB apprenticeship. In the first six months of 2021, up to 88 apprentices have been recruited, signalling much higher demand from the industry than in previous years.

In a recent survey of employers who have been involved in the programme to date: 93 per cent of employers would participate in the apprenticeship again.

96 per cent said the apprenticeship achieved the outcomes they anticipated for their organisation.

96 per cent also said the apprenticeship is an effective way to train apprentices for future job opportunities in the industry, with the fast track to attaining the PSRA licence in all four categories in two years.

Geraldine’s Anniversary Mass is on Sunday, 18th July at 10am in St. Joseph’s Church, Kilteevan.

Pete’s wife Maura, daughter Susan, son-in-law William, grandchildren Éile and Karl would like to thank all those who showed such great kindness to us following Pete’s death on 22nd May last. We were greatly comforted by the number of messages of condolence, Mass Cards, sympathy cards, letters, telephone calls, messages and flowers that we received.

Pete had a short illness and for a time in February he was cared for expertly by the doctors, nurses and other staff at Roscommon University Hospital. Our deepest appreciation to Dr. Wojciech Wawrzynek, Dr. Fiona Sweeney, the staff at the Medical Centre, the staff at Rosmed Pharmacy staff and the Specialist Palliative Care Service Team who did everything possible to make a difficult journey more comfortable.

We were deeply touched by the generosity of our wonderful neighbours and friends and to those who lined the journey for Pete from his home to the Church for his Funeral Mass and those who attended the Funeral Mass outside the church and the burial.

To the many family and friends who could not attend in person because of restrictions, but joined online, thank you for being with us and participating in the funeral service.

A sincere thank you to Fr. Ray Milton who led the celebration of Pete’s life with warmth and consideration. Thank you to the Altar Society and stewards at St. Patrick’s Church, Knockcroghery for their great care. Thank you also to the Vocalist and Organist Derek Mahady and Vocalist Colleen Lane and all who participated in the mass. Covid placed constraints on how we could mourn Pete’s death and celebrate his life. We thank everyone for observing with respect and sensitivity the public health restrictions that applied to his funeral.

We thank Pat Smyth and his team at Smyth’s Funeral Directors Ltd, Roscommon for their professional services and direction at a difficult time. To the neighbours and friends who prepared Pete’s grave in Gailey Cemetery thank you.

What comes through so clearly in all the messages from those who knew Pete is his kindness, sense of propriety and razor-sharp wit. Keep him in your hearts and prayers, remember him often and smile for all that he brought to those he knew.

Please accept this acknowledgement as a token of our sincere appreciation.

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions.

Kevin’s wife Regina, daughter Keeva, son Aaron, parents Jim and Florence, brothers, sisters and his extended family wish to express their deepest gratitude and appreciation for the kindness and support shown to us on the sad loss of our beloved Kevin.

We would like to thank the doctors, nurses, carers, and Palliative Care team at both University Hospital Galway and Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Kevin and to us his family.

We were deeply touched by our neighbours and friends who lined the route for Kevin’s final journey, first to Ballagh Church and then to his resting place at Kilgefin Cemetery.

We would also like to thank our friends, neighbours and work colleagues in London who were unable to attend his funeral but sent their heartfelt condolences.

A heartfelt thanks to Fr. Larry Behan for celebrating the Funeral Mass and thank you to Clodagh Fallon for the music, both made the Funeral Mass so special and personal. We would like to thank the gravediggers who prepared Kevin’s final resting place and to Pat Smyth of Smyth’s Funeral Directors Ltd, Roscommon for his professionalism, respect and sensitivity shown to us during this most difficult time.

Roscommon Sports Partnership features in Sport Ireland Annual Report 2020

Roscommon Sports Partnership is one of twenty-nine Local Sports Partnerships (LSPs) featured in the Annual Report 2020 published recently by Sport Ireland. The report highlights the work of the LSP Network and the impact they have on participation levels by engaging key target populations across Ireland.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, Roscommon Sports Partnership has continued to provide programmes and initiatives to ensure that everyone in Roscommon has the opportunity to share in the enjoyment as well as the mental and physical health benefits of sport and physical activity.

In 2020, Sport Ireland allocated over €870,000 in Programme Funding to the LSP Network –

an increase of 53 percent from the 2019 investment. Programme funding is at the core of the LSPs engagement with participants, and allows for the delivery of a range of community, club and school based initiatives, programmes and events.

Noel Feeley, Coordinator of Roscommon Sports Partnership, welcomed the findings in the Annual Report.

“The strength of the Local Sports Partnerships is more evident than ever. Given the difficulties of the past fifteen months, Roscommon, among the other twenty-nine LSPs, have gone above and beyond what is expected and have not only targeted higher numbers of participants locally but have produced high quality and innova-

tive initiatives.

“The LSPs have adapted in a way that was never even considered an option before Covid-19, the resilience and professionalism displayed has impacted Ireland nationally, but most importantly has created opportunities in our rural community,” he said.

In one key initiative, Roscommon Sports Partnership partnered with Swim Ireland to deliver a six-week and eight-week tailored swimming programme in open water. One of the aims was to highlight the opportunities that exist on our local waterways, and to reconnect the community with the outdoors for sporting and recreational activities.

The programme was successfully delivered across two locations in Roscommon – forty participants

in total attended Ballyleague and Lough Key Open Water programmes. Forty-eight participants attended the mass event in Lough Key, Boyle as part of European Week of Sport. Participants have reported increased physical activity and cardiovascular levels as a result of completing the programme, as well as increased confidence and enhanced sense of wellbeing. Some of the participants have gone on to join their local triathlon clubs.

The 2021 Open Water Swimming Programme has been on-going throughout the month of June (swimireland.ie). Further open water swimming programmes are planned for Ballyleague Marina and Castlerea Swimming Pool later in the summer.

Funding deadline for angling projects and events this Friday Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Sponsorship Programme for 2021, open to suitable angling events and initiatives in Roscommon and nationwide closes this Friday, June 25th.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the programme,

which is one of the main funding mechanisms of Inland Fisheries Ireland, didn’t go ahead in 2020.

In Roscommon, five initiatives were awarded funding as part of the scheme in 2019. They included: the Lough Ree In-

ternational Coarse Fishing Festival; Boyle and District Easter Pike Angling Festival; Lanesborough Autumn Angling Festival 2019; Cuisle Angling Event; Lough Ree International Pike Classic 2019.

The programme for

events funding remains open until tomorrow (Friday, June 25th) with applications for equipment, staff support and biosecurity assistance available throughout the year.

Neighbours set for long-awaited junior clash Roscommon JAFC 2020 Final: Clann na nGael v St. Brigid’s on Friday in Dr. Hyde Park at 7.30 pm < SEAMUS DUKE

It’s been the longest build up to a county club championship final in history as Clann and St. Brigid’s finally take to the field to fight it out in the junior football final after a nine-month wait.

It’s a fair assumption to make that both sides will be somewhat changed from the teams we might have seen last October but both teams will have been training hard and there is great anticipation in both club areas.

St. Brigid’s began their season well when their seniors had an impressive win against Boyle in the first round of the O’Rourke Cup last weekend and their junior manager, Eddie Nestor, has plenty of talented young players on the fringe of the senior team to call on for this side.

Clann, under the guidance of Niall Shine, will be a more experienced outfit with former senior stars like Johnny Dunning, David Connaughton, Ross Naughton and Matt Scally on board.

Both teams played in the O’Gara Cup last weekend and were involved in very tight matches. Clann pipped Castlerea by a point (1-14 to 0-16) while Brigid’s also won by a point (2-11 to 2-10) against Kilbride. Many of the players who will line out in the final on Friday night were in action in those league games.

So who will be the first club at adult level to get their hands on a bit of silverware ahead of what is set to be a very busy summer? The People Sport guess is St. Brigid’s, but this is certainly one that could go either way!

Roscommon hurlers have a mini injury crisis as they prepare for their championship bow against Wicklow in the Christy Ring Cup on Saturday in Aughrim.

Speaking to People Sport on Tuesday, however, Roscommon manager, Johnny Keane, remained confident that his side could cause a surprise in the Garden County following a poor league campaign.

“We have injuries to four of our starting team: Paul Dolan, Sean Trundle, Oisin Kelly and Cathal Kenny are all out and they are big losses for us but we just have to get on with it. The most positive way to look at it is that it will offer a chance for four more lads to come in and show what they can do,” he said.

Roscommon golfer reaches last four of Irish Women’s Amateur Close Championship < SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon town teenager, Olivia Costello, is already looking ahead to the next challenge as she continues her meteoric rise through the ranks of women’s golf after last weekend’s achievement of getting to the last four of one of the biggest tournaments on the Irish amateur calendar, the Irish Women’s Amateur Close Championships at Ballybunion.

Having sailed through the qualification rounds, 13-yearold Olivia defeated the experienced Mairéad Martin 4 and 2 before beating the 2004 champion Deirdre Smith to book her place in the last four.

Her amazing run was brought to an end by the eventual champion, Anna Foster from Elm Park (Dublin), with Olivia going down by 6 and 5.

People Sport caught up with Olivia at Roscommon Golf Club on Tuesday as she practiced her short game ahead of the next big tournament.

“I was very happy with last weekend. I went down there just to make the cut and get into the match play stages but I played well and won a couple of matches. Olivia spends almost every day practicing and is a very modest and very impressive girl. When asked what the strongest part of her game was she hesitantly said: “I suppose ball striking is my best quality but my short game needs more work”.

Roscommon town teenager, Olivia Costello (pictured at Roscommon Golf Club this week) is already looking ahead to the next challenge as she continues her meteoric rise through the ranks of women’s golf.

Olivia’s favourite player is Leona Maguire, who is blazing a trail on the LPGA Tour in the USA at the moment.

She paid tribute to her family and especially to her dad Michael who acts as her ‘transport and logistics manager’.

Olivia is daughter of Michael and Ewelina Costello and she has two younger brothers, Michael and Jamie.

Her dad was an accomplished footballer, winning four Roscommon SFC medals with Roscommon Gaels and he also represented Ro-

scommon at underage and U-21 level.

For one so young Olivia is a very talented young sportswoman. She has many years to develop her talents and she is certainly going in the right direction. Hopefully there will be many more big days out for her coming up.

Former Roscommon footballer to make pro boxing debut Former Roscommon footballer, Donal Ward from Loughglynn is set to make his pro boxing debut in the United States at the end of next month.

Ward, who plied his trade with Western Gaels, played with Roscommon from 2010 to 2015 before lining out for New York in the 2018 championship.

He began his boxing career at Loughglynn Boxing Club, coached by his father Frank, where he won underage national titles through the ranks, reaching a Senior Elite Semi-Final in 2014.

His pro debut will see him face fellow debutant Mike Taylor at 160

pounds at the Castleton Conference Centre, New Hampshire, USA, on July 30th.

Although coming to the pro fight game late, Ward enjoyed an impressive amateur career, winning Gold at the 2013 World Police and Fire Games in Belfast.

After retiring from football in the United States, Ward joined the New York Athletic and teamed up with coaches Mike Fulham and EJ Bourke, who encouraged him to enter the 2019 Ring Master Championships (formerly Golden Gloves).

Ward impressed in his four bouts against well-known amateurs before

narrowly losing out in the final to Famous Wilson at Madison Square Garden.

The Roscommon fighter now works in the well-known Irish Bar, Sissy McGinty’s, in Queens and while the bar was closed during the Covid-19 pandemic, started boxing and personal training.

The James Shivnan Cup takes place this Sunday (27th) in Boyle with the first of the ‘majors’, the Men’s President’s Prize to come on Sunday, June 11th.

Congratulations to Gerry Carty who beat Vincent Egan in the recent final of the 2020 King Harmon Cup. Pat Conroy was the winner of this year’s King Cup, with a tremendous 45 points. Marc O’Connor took second place with 42 while David Wynne claimed best gross and Jim Callery’s 41 points was good enough for third place.

In the men’s 12-hole competition, Adam Daly was first with 30 points and Gerry Nerney (27 points) won the competition played on June 17th.

Liam Whyte’s Pierce Purcell team claimed a major scalp in the first round, beating Rosses Point. The team will now take on Strandhill in round two.

Paddy McLoughlin’s Seniors are in Fred Perry Cup action today (Thursday) against Rosses Point. Members are welcome to come and support.

Athlone Ger O’Kennedy was the winner of the Ladies and Gents’ Open with 42 points with the visitor’s prize going to Sinead Ni Cheilleachair on 40 points.

Sunday’s competition was won by John Costello with 39 points while T. Carmody was best of the AWGS recently with 36.

This weekend’s action There is no Irish racing today but this weekend sees the start of the Irish Derby meeting for the next three days at the Curragh tomorrow evening. The feature races on Friday are the Apprentice Derby and the TRI Equestrian Handicap with both races worth €12,600 to the winner, racing starts at 4.30 pm.

The Irish Derby is the centre of a first-class card on Saturday backed up by the Group 2 Railway Stakes and the Group 3 International Stakes and the first race at 2 pm. Sunday sees the equine ladies to the fore with the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes for fillies and two Group 2 races, the Airlie Stud Stakes and the Comer Group International Stakes stalls open at 1.30 pm.

Monday is a day of rest and racing resumes on Tuesday here in Roscommon on the flat.

Curragh Preview Racing tomorrow evening features the Bord na Móna Recycling Apprentice Derby. The Irish Stallion Farms EBF sponsor the first two races. The Barretstown Handicap is supported by the Brady Family and is over 7f.

The feature is up next and followed by the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden.

The penultimate race, the TRI Equestrian Handicap, is again over 1m 2f and racing closes with the Holden Plants Rental Handicap over 1m 1f.

Saturday sees the centrepiece, the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, at 3.45 pm.

Racing opens with the Dubai Duty Free Dash. The Dubai Duty Free Summer Handicap is next on the card.

The Group 2 GAIN Railway Stakes leads up to the feature which is followed by the Group 3 Arm Holding International Stakes over 1m2f. The penultimate race is the Dubai Duty Free Handicap over and racing closes with the Dubai Duty Free Irish EBF Handicap.

There are 17 left in the Derby with eight from Aidan O’Brien including Highland Definition. An interesting jockey booking is that of Martyn Meade who has snapped up Dettori, seeking his third classic of the season, for Lone Eagle whose regular jockey Silvestre de Sousa has to ride for his retainer King Power Racing at either Newmarket

Buccaneers Rugby Club watched on with pride recently as Jordan Conroy inspired the Ireland 7s team to Olympic qualification in Monaco.

Conroy starred in the winner-takes-all match against France as Ireland booked their place in Tokyo following a 28-19 triumph.

Meanwhile, Shane Jennings and Oisin McCormack were also highly impressive as in Ireland’s 38-7 opening win over Scotland in the Six Nations U-20 Championship last Saturday.

The victory of Coolmore-bred Joan Of Arc (4/1) in the Group 1 Prix de Diane Longines at Chantilly on Sunday was a significant winner for Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien as it gave the champion handler a career sweep of all the Classics in Ireland, Britain and France.

Derby second Mojo Star has been supplemented at a cost of €75,000 by trainer Richard Hannon and owner Amo Racing as has Charlie Appleby’s Hurricane Lane, one place behind Mojo Star at Epsom. They are second and third in the antepost list behind Ballydoyle’s Highland Definition.

With no jockey arrangements for O’Brien’s runners and the favourite already beaten by Appleby’s horse by 2l at York, Hurricane Lane and Mojo Star could fight out the finish with Mojo Star getting the nod. Rossa Ryn should be fit to replace David Egan who finished second on the horse in Epsom.

Sunday’s eight-race card starts with the Barronstown Stud Irish EBF Maiden.

The feature is for 3-Y-Os+ fillies and run over 1m2f. The Comer International Curragh Cup is a Group 2 race over 1m 6f. The Irish Stallion Farms EBF sponsor the penultimate Ragusa Handicap over 1m 4f and the festival ends with the Finlay Volvo Irish EBF sponsored median auction maiden one 1m.

Tuesday’s card in Roscommon is on the flat, opening with a 2-Y-O maiden over 7f sponsored by the Irish Stallion Farms EBF. There is a similar distance for the second, Property Partners Earley Auctioneers Fillies Handicap.

Thanks To All The Frontline Workers Apprentice Handicap over 7f. Next for 3-Y-Os only is the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden is over 1m 2f followed by the Athlone Handicap.

The jewel in the crown of Roscommon’s flat season is the Listed Lenebane Stakes over 1m 3f and the feature race of the card. Racing ends with the www.roscommonracecourse.ie Maiden.

Royal Ascot Report On Thursday, the Gosden trained odds on favourite, Stradivarius and Frankie Dettori, trying to emulate the great Yeats by winning four Gold Cups, got boxed in on the rails and could only finish fourth to Subjectivist. The winner was trained by Mark Johnston and ridden by Joe Fanning in the Gold Cup. There were two Group 1 races on Friday with the Commonwealth Cup crossing the Atlantic with Wesley Ward and Campanelle ridden by Dettori, was awarded the race in the stewards’ room. They finished second in the race, beaten a head, to the Archie Watson trained Dragon Symbol ridden by Oisin Murphy who bumped the American twice in the straight. The Irish trained Measure Of Magic was third for trainer Johnny Murtagh and jockey Ben Coen.

Murphy gained quick compensation in the next, the Group 1 Coronation Stakes on board Alcohol Free for Andrew Balding beating Snowfall and Aidan O’Brien’s Mother Earth with Ryan Moore aboard. Murtagh and

Coen also gained compensation in the next race, the Sandringham Stakes for fillies with Create Belief winning by 5½l from Samooth and the Joseph O’Brien’s Messidor 3l further back giving Murtagh his first Royal Ascot winner.

On Saturday, Ryan Moore rode a treble, starting in the opener the Chesham Stakes winning for Aidan O’Brien on Point Lonsdale from the Gosden trained Reach For The Moon and Michael Bell’s Great Max by ½l and 3¼l.

In the Group 1, Diamond Jubilee Stakes he was on the Michael Stoute trained Dream Of Dreams who beat the Archie Watson’s Glen Shiel, 1l, and Tim Easterby’s Art Power, ¾l. He completed the treble on another Irish trained horse, winning the finale for Willie Mullins on Stratum who beat the Richard Hughes trained Calling The Wind ridden by his nephew David Egan with The Grand Visir third.

Racing News On Sunday, Joan Of Arc gave Ballydoyle their third French Classic adding the French Oaks to the two won

by St Mark’s Basilica, the French 2000 Guineas and French Derby. All were ridden by French rider Ioritz Mendizabal. This win completes a nap hand of the classics in Ireland, England and now France.

Jody Townend rode out her 7lb claim as she continued her recent run winning the Slaney River Handicap Hurdle for lady riders aboard KIassy Kay for Willie Mullins at Wexford on Sunday.

Gulf in class as Cavan claim league honours Littlewoods Ireland Camogie National League Division Four Final Cavan 3-16 Roscommon 0-7 < SEAMUS DUKE

The revival in the fortunes of the Roscommon junior camogie side came to an abrupt halt at Pearse Park in Longford last Sunday when they were totally outclassed by a very impressive Cavan team in the Division Four final.

After four good performances to get to the decider, Cavan proved a bridge too far for Frank Browne’s team and the match was a reminder of just how much work Roscommon will have to do to be able to compete at a higher level. Cavan beat Roscommon by 13 points in the championship last year. If anything, they have improved since that day in Athleague and they pulled away in what was a one-sided second half.

Roscommon missed a couple of good chances in the first half when the game was competitive but their return of just three points from play in the whole game was an indication of just how well beaten they were.

After a good start from Cavan, points from Kelley Hopkins and a Leah Rowe free narrowed the gap to one (0-3 to 0-2) by the 18th minute but once Niamh Keeneghan drove a great shot to the net in the 20th minute Roscommon were in trouble.

Nicola Crean had a goal chance in the 25th minute but it was well saved by Laura Bambrick and at half-time Cavan led by 1-5 to 0-4.

It was all one-way traffic after the break as Cavan took over completely. A string of well-taken points and further goals from Niamh Keeneghan and Shanice Fitzsimons compounded Roscommon’s misery.

Niamh Farrell was Roscommon’s best player on the day and there were flashes of

quality from Rachel Fitzmaurice and sub Shauna Fallon but it was a very disappointing day out for the Rossies and much work needs to be done ahead of the championship next month.

After the game, a despondent Roscommon manager Frank Browne was very realistic about the performance.

“I thought that at half-time we were there or thereabouts but in fairness to Cavan they are a good side but we have no excuses, we were beaten fairly and squarely.

“All we can do now is go back to the drawing board. We did a lot of really good things during the league campaign, and we will go away and lick our wounds and come back harder again. We know how high the bar is set after today and it was a chastening experience. But as sports people we will get up and go again and these girls will do that too.

“I’m not making excuses, but this group has only been together for two months and we have a lot of learning and building to do. We haven’t had time to do any kind of tactical work at all and we were out there today as 15 individual hurlers. But we will go away and put that right.

“We are better than this but we have to look forward. Losing is one thing but losing and not learning is the biggest mistake we could make and we learned a lot here today,” he said.
