In a week which saw two-term councillor Kathleen Shanagher opting out of next year’s local elections, Fine Gael will tonight unveil two first-time candidates in the Roscommon Municipal District. Well-known community figures Robbie McConn (Athleague) and Gareth Scahill (Castlerea) are due to be selected unopposed at Thursday evening’s Fine Gael Selection Convention in Kilbride Community Centre. Their entry into the race intensifies the competition in the main urban electoral area, where sitting councillors Orla Leyden and Kathleen Shanagher are both stepping down. Mr McConn, a retired member of An Garda Síochána, is particularly well-known in sporting circles, including in the GAA and as a director of Roscommon Racecourse. Mr Scahill, a Castlerea-based businessman, is a member of Castlerea Town Team and

is widely involved in community life in the town. Meanwhile, Fine Gael will hold its Boyle Convention on Monday evening next (27th). Sitting councillor Liam Callaghan, and newcomer Dympna Daly-Finn will be selected unopposed. Fine Gael Constituency Organiser Pat Tully told the Roscommon People that no date has yet been set for the Athlone Convention, where John Naughten is a sitting Fine Gael councillor. See page 8.
