Spouse Inheritance Rights My husband passed away recently. He made a will prior to his death and he left the farm to our son. The farm was in his name, but we farmed it together all our married life. Our home was also in his name and he left me with just a life interest in my home and after my death it will also pass to our son. I am very disappointed, and I feel ill-treated. I had assumed that he would leave all to me and I could then pass all to our son on my death. I am still quite young, and I am worried about having enough money to support myself going forward. My relationship with my son can be strained at times. Is there anything I can do?

The law governing wills, namely the Succession Act, 1965, provides unique protection for spouses of the deceased in Ireland.

You refer to a will and I am assuming that your late husband’s will is valid. Please ensure that his will was made in a solicitor’s office and meet the requirements of a valid will.

By law, are entitled to at least one-third of your late husband’s estate if he died having made a valid will.

This one-third share is based on the fact that you had children together. If you had no children together then you would have been entitled to at least half of his husband’s estate. This entitlement is called a legal right share. The legal right share ranks in priority after the rights of creditors of the deceased and ahead of any other beneficiary.

The welcome news that over €11m in funding is being allocated to the country’s regional airports (obviously including Ireland West Knock).

What we didn’t like…

Reports that the so-called ‘Top six’ in the Premier League are all up for breaking away and joining a European Super League had Gary Neville (Sky Sports’ pundit) fuming. Millions of fans feel the same way. Those greedy billionaire owners should never have been trusted…(Update: as we go to press on Wednesday evening, the Super League concept is in tatters, with clubs withdrawing in response to the public outcry).

€500 reward following discovery of dead dogs < DAN DOONER

A local businessman has offered a €500 reward for any information that leads to a prosecution following the discovery of two dead dogs at a bog between Castlerea and Ballymoe on Tuesday.

The brown spaniel and a black and white terrier, were found, along with a feeding bowl, in a crate which was submerged in water in the same area where a a collie was found abandoned last week.

The grim discovery was confirmed yesterday by the Roscommon SPCA and it is believed the dogs had been in the water for a number of days.

The dead animals were removed to Cloverhill Veterinary Surgery yesterday (Wednesday), where plans will be made for both dogs to be cremated.

A local businessman, who wishes to remain anonymous, contacted the Roscommon People following the discovery and has offered a €500 reward for information.

A post on the Roscommon SPCA Facebook page read: ‘We are having those two poor dogs cremated and we’ll have their ashes scattered somewhere nice. By doing this we can afford them the dignity in death they deserved (but) never got when they were alive.

‘Thank you to Donna Andrews and Mary Joyce for retrieving the cage with the dogs and transporting it to Cloverhill Vets’.

The voluntary group confirmed that the Gardaí and the Animal Welfare Inspector have been notified of the discovery.

Donations to Roscommon SPCA can be made via Paypal and more information is available on the association’s Facebook page.

Ballyforan woman is new Roscommon councillor < DAN DOONER

A 21-year-old Ballyforan woman is set to become one of the youngest councillors in the country after being selected to replace Independent councillor Ivan Connaughton, who will step down immediately after the council’s plenary meeting on April 26h.

Emer Kelly, a third-year occupational therapy student at NUI Galway, told the Roscommon People that she was looking forward to building on the work Cllr. Connaughton has done in recent years.

“I’ve always had an interest in politics and this was something I had always planned to do and

the opportunity arose sooner than I expected. I will be fully committed to the role and I will be a representative for all people in the area,” she said.

“When Ivan announced his resignation there was an open invitation and after considering it for a few days, I decided I would be ready and willing to be a new voice for people of all ages”.

Emer comes from a farming background and is the eldest of seven children of Dermot and Ann Marie Kelly. She plays football for Four Roads and is also the secretary of Ballyforan Fair and Festival.

Emer’s father, Dermot, contested the 2009 elec-

tion for Fine Gael but the new Independent councillor believes young people are less party orientated these days.

“I know myself that I vote for the person who I think will get things done regardless of whether they are a member of a party or not,” she said.

The student, who is currently on work placement, said she was happy to be another female voice at local level but insisted that she would be a representative for the entire electorate.

She added that it was her intention to contest the 2024 local elections and said she was now excited to “get stuck in” to her new role.

Gardaí investigating two break-ins < DAN DOONER

Roscommon Gardaí are appealing for information regarding two burglaries in recent days and are currently examining if the incidents are linked.

The first incident occurred in the Dysart area at around 3.45 pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Thieves gained entry to a

private house by forcing a window, and investigating officers are assessing what items were stolen.

It is believed a darkcoloured car, similar to an Audi A4, may be linked to the incident.

Gardaí are also investigating an attempted breakin at a house in Roscommon town on Monday last.

It is believed that at least four men attempted to break into a property on Wilson Close on the Galway Road at around 2.30 pm.

Gardaí understand that one of the men was wearing a grey suit, while all four men were wearing hats and scarves.

The intruders were disturbed by a person in the house, which was occupied at the time, and fled to a nearby field.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have noticed anyone acting suspiciously in the area between 2 pm and 3 pm on Monday to contact them at Roscommon Garda Station on 090-6638300.

newsbriefs Jobs blow as Carphone Warehouse closes Roscommon suffered a jobs blow this week as Carphone Warehouse yesterday (Wednesday) announced its immediate closure in Ireland with the loss of around 80 stores and 486 jobs.

The company, which has stores in Roscommon, Longford, Carrick-on-Shannon and Athlone, says it has taken the decision due to a change in consumer habits and a 40% decrease in footfall in the last year.

The firm’s parent company has said that it will continue selling phones and accessories through Curry’s PC World.

Outlawing Mass a temporary measure – Murphy Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has moved to reassure local Mass-goers that new legislation published last week was “merely a temporary measure”.

“A statutory instrument was published earlier this week after Health Minister Stephen Donnelly signed a regulation allowing only virtual religious services, but let me stress that this is just a temporary measure that had to be completed,” he said.

“If the number of Covid cases continues to decrease, I would be confident that we will have a positive announcement in the coming weeks. It is important to point out that churches still remain open for private prayer and mass will continue online for the time being, but it is only a temporary measure”.

Figures released by the HSE to Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane show that 4,514 children in Counties Roscommon and Galway are currently awaiting speech and language therapy.

In all, 41,882 children are on waiting lists across the State, which Deputy Kerrane described as concerning.

“There are children waiting anywhere up to two years just to be seen for an initial assessment and that’s before any actual therapy,” she said.

“These waiting times are hugely damaging for child development and also for children’s well-being and their self-esteem. It also impacts on their ability to learn and their progression in school”.

The Sinn Féin TD said the waiting lists would be a cause of concern for the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly and that access to supports should be made available at the earliest opportunity.

Every day While invariably friendly and courteous, people that you meet are drained, fatigued by how long this pandemic is stretching. Hard to believe that in February 2020 we speculated at every turn about this upheaval in our lives lasting a few months at most. Hard to believe that the optimism of last November – with the country seduced by partial reopening and exciting news of a breakthrough on vaccines – would be followed by five months, thus far, of more Covid turmoil…with stubbornly high infection rates, further tragic loss of life, a growing mental health toll, an already battered economy taking more blows, and erratic vaccination rollout (and new variants) testing public patience.

People are weary. The other day in Rooskey, I said to a friend (on the street): “Hopefully just another month or two”. A lady passing within earshot good-humouredly chipped in with “A year, I’d say”.

As I write (Tuesday) there is a sense of optimism, guarded of course, with positive trends across the board. Zero Covid-related deaths reported in the Republic and the North yesterday (I know such numbers will fluctuate).

Infection numbers falling. Some further restrictions to be lifted in May. Grounds for optimism on vaccinations. It feels as if we may be turning a corner in this battle.

Saturday Chatting to a fellow snooker fan in the Abbey Hotel in Roscommon a few years ago, I unwittingly slipped into ‘A little knowledge is a dangerous thing’ mode, solemnly declaring that snooker is in decline, its golden age long over.

The middle-aged man to whom I was talking quickly put me right. I’d drawn my slightly simplistic conclusion (a) because, unlike in the 1980s, there are no snooker characters around now; and (b) I was pretty sure that my generation no longer watches or cares to the extent that we did in the past.

But this chap wasn’t relying on lazy nostalgia, he was into facts. “The game has never been bigger” he told me. “The standard has never been higher” he added (that, I could accept).

Driving home his point about snooker never being bigger or more popular, he then played the Asian card. It may be true that sentimental middle-aged Alex Higgins fans in the UK and Ireland have averted their gaze a bit over the years, but there was, he informed me, a snooker explosion in Asia.

sition: Snooker has never been bigger, the standard never higher. There is phenomenal growth in playing numbers. A rapidly growing worldwide audience too. This, he assured me, is the actual golden era of snooker. The sport of the smokefilled backstreet clubs is going global!

As the man I was chatting to was six-times world snooker champion Steve Davis (in Roscommon for an exhibition) I meekly agreed, while continuing to fawn.

Name-dropping done, let me move on…today, the 2021 World Snooker Championship began in the great Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. And while Steve Davis was undoubtedly right in what he said, it is still the case that the tournament doesn’t excite to the extent that it used to.

When the list of this year’s 32 contenders appears on screen, I recognise less than 20 of them.

And, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump aside, they are rather robotic these days. Of course the standard in the 1970s-80s was not as high as it is now, but what characters the game had…Higgins, White, Reardon, Spencer, Stevens, Taylor, Davis, Hendry, Griffiths, Thorburn, Werbeniuk, etc.

Snooker may be global now, but in our hearts, it’s not a golden age. Still, I remain a fan, and will keep an eye on the Crucible, mildly interested in the latest instalment of a great sporting drama, while loyal in my heart (and memory) to the glory days of the green baize.

Later on Saturday Ah, you have to hand it to Kate Middleton. After all the fevered speculation about the likely frosty atmosphere when ‘Harry met William’ at their grandfather’s funeral today, classy Kate just took the initiative in the most cunning and graceful way. As millions of TV viewers looked on, Kate first had a word with the now self-exiled Prince Harry, before his brother, Prince William, was drawn into the small talk. Ice broken, Kate then took a few steps back, leaving the two brothers to walk and talk side by side. You may have heard the anguished cries of tabloid newspaper editors!

As to the funeral itself, it was a very dignified send-off for a truly remarkable man. All the familiar Royal pomp and ceremony was there, even if crowds couldn’t be. It was uniquely British. At the end of the day, it was a family saying goodbye to a loved one – nobody allowed to attend, but the world peering in.

Sunday (and all week) A tsunami strikes English – and European – football. On what should have been a fairly normal ‘Super Sunday’ – Sky Sports showing Manchester United v Burnley – news breaks of a sensational and shocking development that threatens to rock English football to its core. It’s reported that

Tonight’s documentary on the writer Colm Tóibín was beautifully made. Tóibín, now considered one of the world’s leading novelists, came across as an engaging, modest and likeable man. I have to admit that while I’m familiar with his most famous books, I haven’t read any of them! The majority of the books I read are biographies. The fiction writers that I’ve enjoyed most are John McGahern and William Trevor. But I must say, the excerpts from Tóibín’s writings – read in this documentary by the author himself – were examples of quite beautiful writing. A touch of pomposity aside, the Wexford man wears his brilliance lightly, and is quite the national treasure!

Tuesday VAR (Very angry reaction) decision: Chelsea and Brighton’s 0-0 draw tonight is overshadowed (not hard) by dramatic developments in the not very super Super League story. Bowing to public pressure, all six of the English clubs that had signed up for the breathtaking breakaway have sensationally pulled out tonight. Utter humiliation for the plotters. Grassroot fans have prevailed, quite spectacularly, over the Brazen Billionaires. The credibility of the self-styled ‘top six’ has been greatly damaged. They have a lot of work to do now to regain the support of the man and woman in the street. A crazy 48 hours. Unsettling, sad, ultimately satisfactory. It seems that reports that football’s soul has been lost are, for now, inaccurate. Forget Super Sunday and Monday Night Football, this is Tsunami Tuesday. It’s over.

The Strokestown Poetry Festival will take place from Thursday, April 29th to Sunday, May 2nd and will feature a host of wonderful online recitations, workshops and music throughout.

The ever-popular event opens on Thursday, April 29th at 8 pm with ‘Poetry Day: New Beginnings’, the launch of the Strokestown Anthology 2021 with Paddy Bushe.

On Friday, April 30th, ‘The Flowers of May’, The Strokestown Community Film Poem with Susie Spallin and Jonathan Cassidy is a free event which takes place from 8 pm.

Saturday, May 1st is the busiest day of the festival and kicks off with ‘Voices of Kiltrustan National School: Poems of Hunger’s Way’ at 10 am. This will be followed by Gaelscoil de hÍde Roscomáin, a poem from a workshop with Áine Ní Ghlinn, children’s writer and Laureate na nÓg. This is also a free event.

Poetry by Tommy Murray and music with Irene Guckian will be broadcast on Country Roundup with Paul Carrington on Shannonside FM from 11 am (approximate interval times: 11.30 am, 12.30 pm, 1.15 pm and 1.40 pm) on Saturday (May 1st).

New Voices: Poets & Poems from the online Poetry Writing Workshop with Jane Clarke will commence from 12 pm (donations welcome), and at 2 pm, poetry competition winners from last year, Jane Wilkinson, Justin Hunt and Anne McDonald talk to Enda Wyley and read some of their own work in a special free event.

Paddy Bushe introduces the Strokestown Anthology 2021 from 4 pm and donations are welcome.

We round off Saturday at 8 pm with ‘Bealach an Fhéir Ghortaigh/Hunger’s Way – A Film Poem’ by Vincent Woods and Edwina Guckian.

This is sure to be one of the most memorable events of this year’s festival. Online admission is €10 and this is one not to be missed.

Sunday, May 2nd begins at 12 pm with a screening of ‘Selfie’, a film poem by Victoria Kennefick, a poet, writer and teacher based in Co. Kerry. Directed by Luke Morgan and performed

by Lucia Evans, this poem explores a young woman’s sense of powerlessness as she moves from childhood to adulthood. She deems herself simultaneously ‘too small’ and ‘too big’, an Alice in Wonderland, ‘ready to accept anything.

RiflessiDiVersi with Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin is a free event which begins at 1 pm. RiflessiDiVersi is an annual poetry festival held in Umbria in central Italy and 2019 marked the beginning of a collaboration between it and the Strokestown Poetry Festival.

‘A Vision of Water’, a talk

by James Harpur begins at 2 pm on Sunday and donations are welcome.

This will be followed at 3 pm by ‘The Poetry of Nature and The Nature of Poetry’ with Pat Boran. This is a conversation about the poet’s place in the natural world and donations are very welcome.

There’s a second chance to view ‘Bealach an Fhéir Ghortaigh/Hunger’s Way, A Film Poem’ by Vincent Woods and Edwina Guckian at 5 pm. (Cost: €10).

Community groups can only enter the All-Island competition by being nominated by Roscommon County Council. The County Pride of Place competition is open to all communities in County

Roscommon, with the exception of communities that have been nominated within the last three years.

Applications should be made on a town/village/ parish basis. Applications received from different groups in the same area may be treated as one application. Groups should, where possible, work together and submit one joint application. Pride of Place emphasises the need for community groups to work together in enhancing their local area, and rewards those who demonstrate community co-operation and linkages with public bodies, businesses and agencies.

Due to the Covid-19 crisis, the All-Island Pride of Place Competition cannot

take place in its usual format. Community groups that are entered into the All-Island Pride of Place 2021 competition will be asked to submit a detailed written submission (a template for submissions is available). Community groups will be judged on their detailed submission and will also be provided with an opportunity to elaborate on their submission. Judging will take place between July and August (format to be confirmed).

Knock status can benefit Roscommon!

Independent councillor, Tony Waldron, has said that Pope Francis’ decision to recognise Knock Shrine as an International Marian and Eucharistic site could have a hugely positive impact on tourism in County Roscommon.

The Pope’s decision means that Knock will now enjoy the same status as shrines in Lourdes and Fatima.

“Over 1.5 million pilgrims visited Knock Shrine each year up to 2019,” Cllr. Waldron said, “Roscommon stands to benefit due to its proximity to the Shrine and also to Ireland West Airport.

“This is a good news story for County Roscommon, the County Council must be proactive in our efforts to capitalise on the benefits from increased visitor numbers,” Cllr. Waldron concluded.

Remembering victims of the War of Independence On Sunday last (April 18th), members of the County Roscommon IRA Commemoration Committee paid tribute to two volunteers; Sean Bergin and Stephen McDermott, who were killed by British forces on April 19th, 1921 in Loughglynn Wood. A laurel wreath was laid at the monument that marks the spot in the wood where the two volunteers were executed one hundred years ago.

The monument is located 300 metres from the road off the L1227, near Aughaderry Cross, Loughglynn.

Council announces completion of 12 homes in Boyle Roscommon County Council has announced that it has completed extensive refurbishment works at twelve previously unfinished homes at Silveroe Meadows in Boyle.

The pre-existing houses were acquired by the county council and the works were carried out on behalf of the local authority by Leitrim-based building contractor, Carricknabrack Developments Ltd. Other supporting works included the completion of estate roads, public lighting and upgrading of surface water and foul sewer collection networks.

Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, Cllr. Laurence Fallon said: “I would like to compliment the Housing and Planning Business Units of Roscommon County Council on the completion of this unfinished housing development. I would also like to wish the new tenants the very best of luck in their new homes”.

Council Chief Executive, Eugene Cummins, said the local authority was delighted to have delivered what he described as “a fantastic development”.

“The previously long-term unfinished estate and vacant houses constituted an eye sore in a very prominent location on one of the main access roads to Boyle. It is a considerable boost to Boyle to have such an investment result in significant improvements to the area and also provide muchneeded homes.

“This development forms part of numerous housing projects that Roscommon County Council are delivering as part of the Rebuilding Ireland Plan for Housing and Homelessness. I wish to acknowledge the hard work of the Housing and Planning Business Units and the Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage.

“I wish the new tenants the very best of luck and happiness in their new homes”.

Online launch of ‘Memories of Haiti and Other Stories’ < DAN DOONER

There was an international flavour to the recent online launch of Ballygar native, Michael Nolan’s book ‘Memories of Haiti and Other Stories’.

The book was launched on Zoom by Senator Rónán Mullen and was viewed by people from Haiti, El Salvador, the UK, the US, South Africa as well as the four provinces of Ireland.

The launch was hosted by Mary Dolan from Four Roads, who reminded participants that Michael had written of his experiences as a volunteer at ‘Our Little Brothers and Sisters Orphanage’ in Haiti.

The book also features other stories and poetry and all proceeds will go towards the orphanage as publishing costs were covered by generous sponsors.

In his address, Senator Mullen

referred to Haiti’s troubled past and to the current situation. He highlighted some of his favourite poems and stories and said that Covid-19 had made the orphanage’s fundraising efforts incredibly difficult.

Westport native Gena Heraty, a volunteer at the orphanage for 25 years, highlighted the growing running costs in Haiti as well as recent outbreaks of violence there.

Big win for Hollie and Ella!

Congratulations to Kathleen Noone from Ballybride, who won a giant cuddly Andrex puppy as part of a giveaway at Timothy’s Londis in Abbeytown recently. Kathleen entered the competition for her two adorable granddaughters, Hollie (4) and Ella (2), who were very excited to collect their new friend on Friday last!

David crunches his way to €592 for MS Ireland During the month of March, David McKenna (Boyle), agreed to do a total of 3,000 crunches to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland. For a guy who could not do five crunches in a row, this was always going to be difficult!

Thankfully, with a little advice and training from his friends, in February

he set out on doing his 100 crunches each day in batches of 50, and ended up doing a whopping total of 3,400!

In the end, and all crunched out, our hero from Boyle raised a sum of €592 for MS Ireland. David would like to thank all those who supported him and generously donated to MS Ireland!

Boyle Musical Society – 2021 show postponed The committee of Boyle Musical Society has announced the postponement of this year’s musical “with regret” following an AGM, which was conducted via Zoom on March 23rd.

The committee said: “With all the uncertainty at present, there is no way that we could organise and prepare for a show in time Roscommon Herald for the autumn. This is now the second time that we have had to postpone a musical due to Covid-19, but we are confident that it will be the last time too”.

The decision has been taken purely on the grounds of health and safety.

Also discussed at the AGM was the continuation of the existing committee. All of the current members and officers have kindly agreed to remain in their roles for another year.

Council called on to ‘clean up their act’ Castlerea woman, Isabelle Flanagan, who is a local member of the Social Democrats, has this week called on Roscommon County Council to ‘clean up their act’ regarding illegal dumping.

Ms. Flanagan said she has spent the last number of weeks cleaning up litter and other items in her hometown.

“Within the first two days I collected ten turf bags full of rubbish from just one small area. When I noticed that the litter had been almost buried in the soil it became clear that this behaviour has been allowed for a very long time. It’s clear to me that Roscommon County Council isn’t doing enough to prevent littering or address it when it happens.

“The council has a responsibility to do better for our communities. But we can work together locally to address this too. I encourage everyone to get out in your area and ‘adopt a spot’. We cannot allow our beautiful county to be covered in litter,” she said.

Lockdown exercise highlights the need for insurance scheme for cyclists!

Our man Frank on the growth in the number of people enjoying all sorts of exercise locally during Covid-19 as well as the dangers posed both to and by cyclists on our country’s roads…

One of the biggest benefits of the pandemic (apart from the huge increase in the number of home bakers) is the increased interest and participation in every kind of exercise. All over the country, people are walking, jogging, and cycling.

Not a day goes by that you don’t see any amount of people passing by, trying to stay fit – physically and mentally – by taking part in one of these popular pastimes.

Cycling in particular has really exploded in popularity in recent times.

When bicycle shops were open, the owners freely admitted that they sim-

ply couldn’t cope with the demand – a bicycle was almost as hard to come by as the winning ticket in the National Lottery!

Last week, however, two incidents involving cyclists made the national news, and each of them showed (in totally different ways) the troubles and traumas of being a cyclist or a walker in these peculiar times.

In the first incident, a male cyclist was out for a trip in the Sally Gap area of the Wicklow Mountains, on the beautiful day that was last Sunday week, when he noticed a car coming up behind him. He thought nothing of it, pulled into the side as best he could, leaving plenty of room for the car to pass so he could carry on with his Sunday afternoon ride. However, as the car overtook him, one of the three male occupants leaned out through an open window and pushed the cyclist, sending him tumbling into the ditch, where (as he himself said) he could’ve suffered serious, maybe even catastrophic, injuries.

The car passengers carried on with their journey, leaving the poor cyclist to pick himself up from the side of the

road. But remarkably, they were filming the whole episode, and footage of their dastardly deed later appeared on social media. It appears that this type of thing is regarded as a prank by some misguided thugs, and occurs regularly all over the country, but according to some reports, the footage may actually be good enough to identify the culprits. So, they may yet be brought to court and hopefully punished severely for their disgustingly dangerous prank.

Then, just a day later, we had another incident involving a cyclist. On this occasion though, it was the cyclist who was the culprit. A lady was out for a walk in Dublin, opposite the famous Fagan’s pub in Drumcondra (local to former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern), and she was waiting at the traffic lights to cross the road. When her light turned green, she started to cross, only to be hit at speed by a cyclist who allegedly ignored the red light against her and cycled straight through, crashing into the lady walker. The cyclist apologised, said the bell on her bike hadn’t worked, waited for a few minutes until a Good

Harry’s still a winner in Creggs!

As a young lad growing up in Creggs in the early fifties, before television, mobile phones or any of the gadgets that have taken over our modern lives, Gaelic football was the biggest thing in rural Ireland – and we were lucky enough to have some excellent footballers in the parish to look up to and admire.

In 1956 I was five-years-old, and can barely remember Creggs winning the Junior Championship. Over the following four or five years, I can still picture some of the great players who represented the club with pride and skill, men who are still talked about with great affection and admiration to this day. Mick Roarke, Bags and Bunty Keegan, Seamus Keane, Noel Hanley, Micky Hurley, and John James Ward among others were local legends of the time and still are, but for me, the player I most wanted to be like was the wonderfully gifted Harry Connolly.

Harry, a Castlerea man, was working in Creggs at the time, and from 1955 to 1960,

he was a huge part of the local team, an All-Ireland medal winner with the 1951 Roscommon team, and one of the most stylish footballers I have ever seen. As a young lad, I used to watch training sessions just to see him in action.

In 1956, he picked up a serious leg injury in the early rounds of the championship. However, during the final against St. Michael’s of Cootehall, in the words of one Roscommon Herald reporter, “Hopping round on one leg, still nursing an injury sustained a few months ago, inter-county midfielder, Harry Connolly, won for Creggs the Junior Championship”. He scored all but one point of the winning score, helping himself to a whopping three goals and three points, all, as they say, on one leg.

Later on, Harry was to be part of the United Stars team (Creggs and Oran combined) that won the Senior Championship in 1960, scoring two goals and ten points in three games, including 1-3 in the semi-final. However,

The lady who was hit had suffered serious injuries, including a broken arm. Her whole body was “black and blue”, and because she lived alone and was so badly injured, she had to move out of her own house and move in with her sister, who lived many miles away.

Both of those events brought into focus something that needs to be looked at very quickly, and that is the importance of cyclists having some type of insurance before they hit the road.

Another sister of the lady who was injured wondered if she has any comeback against the cyclist who hit her and just cycled away afterwards. As she said, if it had been a car, motorcycle, or any other type of transport, she could claim against the driver’s insurance. In this case, despite the serious nature of her injuries and the fact that she was totally blameless in the accident, there is nowhere for her to go, and she has no recourse to any compensation. Surely that is wrong, and even though they have a lot on

He never lost touch with the border village though, and to this day, he returns for all kinds of local events, and remains a hugely popular and welcome visitor to the area.

The local connection continued when his son Gerry had a very successful playing career with Creggs, this time with the oval ball. Gerry’s achievements include being part of the team that had what was probably the biggest ever victory in their history: when Creggs beat Warren Gatland’s unbeaten Galwegians team in the Connacht Senior Cup on April Fool’s Day in 1990.

And so, in the recent Creggs GAA draw, when Harry Connolly’s name came out of the hat for the top prize, it’s safe to say that there couldn’t have been a more popular winner. His contribution to Creggs football will never be forgotten, and he will always be an honorary Creggs man. Congratulations Harry, and well done!

their plate, our legislators must look at sorting out what is a very disturbing situation as quickly as possible.

On the other side of the coin, the cyclist at the Sally Gap should also have recourse to some type of compensation for the effects of the horrific assault he suffered. I know things are expensive enough as it is, but if there were a national insurance scheme for cyclists, where all cyclists could get covered against such accidents for even a nominal premium, surely it would be a good thing.

For all of us who play golf, there is an insurance policy that protects us if we strike another golfer with a stray shot (it also protects the golfer we may hit), or in the event of other unlikely damage. So, on the assumption that more cyclists will be involved in accidents than golfers, why not introduce some type of insurance for them?

The cynic will say that these things rarely happen, but tell that to the poor Dublin woman who is facing many months of hospital visits, at her own expense, to repair her badly broken arm.

And finally…

The beautiful book, ‘Memories of Haiti and other stories’, by Michael Nolan of Ballygar, had an international Zoom launch recently, with people from all over the world, including El Salvador, South Africa, the US, England, and Haiti itself participating. Senator Rónán Mullen performed the launch, with Mary Dolan from Four Roads the eloquent hostess of the event.

I have told you before about the horrendous effect that the 2010 earthquake (which caused the death of 250,000 people) had on the economic and social climate in Haiti.

The country is still suffering as a result, with extreme poverty, crime, and illness rampant.

Despite lots of effort, it has not recovered from the disaster. Michael has visited the poverty stricken country on a number of occasions, helping out as a volunteer in Our Little Brothers and Sisters Orphanage, and all the proceeds from the sale of his book are going towards that very worthy cause.

We each have problems of our own, but compared to the trials the people of Haiti face, most pale into insignificance. So, if you come across Michael’s book anywhere - in bookshops or online – please buy a copy, enjoy a very pleasant read, and do your bit to help the people of Haiti.

Ballygar students prepare for ‘Poetry Aloud’ Three students from Coláiste Mhuire in Ballygar are busy preparing for the finals of this year’s Poetry Aloud Poetry Speaking Competition 2021, which is set to take place online in the coming weeks.

Shauna Carty (third year), Heather Hannon (second year) and Mollie Hannon (transition year), together with their teacher, Thelma Cunniffe, have been working hard on their selection of poems for the Poetry Ireland event,

which is supported by University College Cork.

The event receives up to 2,000 entries each year from all over the country, so it is a significant achievement to have three

students representing the school in the Junior and Intermediate categories.

Each student must recite two poems; one is prescribed, and the other is selected by the student

themselves. They will be judged on their physical presence, voice and articulation, their understanding, interpretation, and overall performance of the poems.

Mollie Hannon is no

stranger to the competition. She also reached the finals in 2018, which took place in the National Library of Ireland. We wish Shauna, Heather and Mollie the very best of luck!

Permit for Ballinasloe waste station ‘a kick in the teeth’

Roscommon County Council hereby invites any interested parties to make submissions or observations regarding the Draft Roscommon County Development Plan 2021-2027, in writing / electronically via the website, to the Planning Authority between the 21st April 2021 until 2nd July 2021 (both dates inclusive).

Members of ‘Ballinasloe Says No’, the group set up to fight plans for a Waste Transfer Station in the town are reviewing their next steps following Galway County Council’s decision to grant a permit for the facility this week.

The group says that close to 3,000 families submitted objections to Galway County Council during campaigns in September 2019 and again in January 2021.

Chairman of ‘Ballinasloe Says No’, Dr. Vincent Parsons said it was a “bitterly disappointing” decision, while local Town Team coordinator, Anita Tuohy described it as a “kick in the teeth” for the area.

Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan, meanwhile, thanked members of the public for their submissions and said the group would review its next steps.

Submissions/Observations:

Children or groups and associations representing the interests of children are entitled to make submissions or observations regarding objectives and policies to deliver an overall strategy for the proper planning and sustainable development of the area of the development plan.

We Irish have a love for liquids! So what?

You’ve been working from home all week. You’re struggling with the stress of separating your personal life from your professional life. But hey, it’s Friday night – time to unplug, order a takeaway, plonk down on the sofa, open a bottle of your favourite tipple, relax and binge your new favourite Netflix series. So far, so normal, and so me… except for ordering the takeaway (I find it impossible to get a vegan choice, so I have to cook), but other than that tiny gripe, I’ve pretty much described my weekend.

And, as we’re all confined to quarters, sure what else is there to do with our down time? Very little!

It’s for that reason that I was taken aback at broadcaster Ray Darcy’s tut-tut, finger-wagging attitude to the nation during his RTÉ radio show regarding our ‘unhealthy’ relationship with alcohol, which, according to the Health Research Board’s report, sees

us as having “the ninth highest alcohol consumption rate in the world”.

Apparently folks, the average person drinks ‘the equivalent of 40 litres of vodka, 113 bottles of wine or 436 pints of beer in one year’.

Now, while it’s entirely understandable that there would be a small increase in drinking at home during the pandemic, I have to admit I find these latest statistics not just worrying, indeed I find them shocking. I didn’t realise we consumed so much of the hard stuff. However, perhaps being a bit more pragmatic than the lovely Mr. Darcy, I’ve decided not to chastise and criticise the intoxicated, but instead I began to wonder what it is that makes us love our liquids so much?

Perhaps it all stems from our heritage. After all, we do have a catastrophic history filled with persecution, repression, starvation and

poverty – throw a national health and economic crisis into the mix and it’s no wonder we’d be desperate for any reason to lighten our mood and have the bit o’craic?

It could also be said that the Irish have an obsession with excessive tea drinking, yet nobody seems to be doing any research on that particular little dependency, now are they? And while I’m sure drinking tea won’t do us the level of harm reportedly caused by downing a cocktail or three, I have to wonder if Mr. Darcy’s pinched tone would be equally reproachful regarding the fact we Irish are, according to enjoy-irish-culture.com, ‘the heaviest tea drinkers per capita in the world’.

I do understand why Ray (given his revelations regarding his dad being ‘a big drinker’) is concerned about the possible abuse of alcohol. You see, like him, I also grew up in a house

Apprenticeships: a perfect path to a professional career!

Last week, Minister for Further and Higher Education Simon Harris launched an Action Plan on Apprenticeships in what I’d deem to be an incentive to encourage school leavers to take them up. What a wonderful idea and well done to Simon for highlighting and promoting what is, in my opinion, the perfect path for young people to learn a skill at a training centre and gain on-the-job experience as they travel along the road to their professional career.

We all know that progressing to a third level education is not for everyone, especially those who dread sitting in a lecture hall and prefer getting hands-on experience (earning a few Euro while they’re at it). The days are long-gone when opting for an apprenticeship was seen as a ‘fall-back’/‘cop-out’ option for students that didn’t manage to secure enough points to attend college.

Now, while I went to college myself, and while both my girls went to college, I can tell you that after three months, my eldest dropped out. Her excuse, which was, “I just can’t hack it Mam”, upset me, but I listened and encouraged her to pursue her own path, which was hairdressing. She’s now a successful business owner, indeed some would call her an entrepreneur, and I couldn’t be more proud of both herself and her sister, who graduated from college and is (bless her, a bit like me) nerdy!

On a lighter note…does it strike anyone as being ironic that our Minister for Higher Education is himself a college dropout? According to universitytimes.ie, Mr. Harris reportedly began a degree in Journalism and French in the Dublin Institute of Technology. However, the online article quotes the Irish Times (from 2016) as reporting that Mr. Harris ‘dropped out to pursue politics’. This destructive figure was not my darling dad, who is a gentleman and a pacifist that doesn’t drink alcohol.

So I do empathise with Ray, and even though I enjoy my weekend tipple, like Mr. Darcy, I’m also cautious around alcohol, allowing myself to consume one bottle of wine a week, spaced out over Friday and Saturday. Why? Well sadly, I feel indulging outside of these nights would feel like a moral failing on my part.

However, unlike the S&M (shame and misery) brigade, I don’t believe in admonishing anyone who does, nor will I castigate them for enjoying or needing that stiff drink. I un-

derstand all too well that alcohol, like drug and substance abuse/addictions etc., can have a profoundly negative impact on a family’s life – in some cases, destroying it altogether – and that’s utterly heart-breaking. Please understand that I’m not condoning, supporting or promoting alcohol abuse. However, I find it highly intrusive for anyone, whether government officials or those with a high profile, to utilise a public platform as a form of tenuous justification to intrude on a person’s right to indulge in a relaxing few drinks!

I don’t know about you folks, but I fear it’s getting to the stage where we won’t be able to snack on a bag of crisps, eat a bar of chocolate, munch on a mint humbug or savour a slice of pizza without becoming riddled by guilt! Indeed, I wonder how long it will be before we’re apologising for eating and drinking at all!

We must stop viewing domestic violence as ‘a private family matter’ The shocking death of a young mother of two, who was fatally stabbed to death in her own home last weekend, has hit the nation hard. Jennie Poole (24) was allegedly murdered in her apartment in Finglas, north Dublin. Her partner has been charged in connection with this heinous act.

This beautiful young woman’s name will tragically be added to the ever-growing list of other Irish women who’ve died by the act of Femicide – a female homicide usually committed by the woman’s partner or ex-partner. Indeed readers, given it was recently disclosed that Gardaí are responding to 30,000 domestic violence calls per year in this country, it’s fair (and shameful) to say that these cases have now overtaken incidences of so-called gangland murders.

While I do of course acknowledge that men can also be victims of domestic violence, it must be stressed that it is women who are more likely to be murdered by an intimate partner in our own homes. This tells me ladies that disgracefully, in 2021, domestic violence is most definitely a gendered problem, and both our children and us are unsafe in our own homes.

However, while abusive relationships occur across all cultures, I think it’s about time we focused our attentions and resources on examining just what it is in our own culture and society that allows for or even facilitates the monstrous abuse and murder of our women and children. It’s also about time we stopped viewing domestic violence as a private family matter – it’s not. If you witness anything you deem to be suspicious or worrying occurring between partners or between parents and children, please, please, please call the Gardaí. May Jennie and all the other women who lost their lives to the act of Femicide rest in peace.

Athlone Castle Visitor Centre will host a children’s creative writing competition as part of this year’s national Cruinniú na nÓg activities, supported by Creative Ireland and Westmeath County Council.

The competition is open to ages 7-11 and 12-17 and children are invited to write a short story or poem inspired by Athlone Castle’s resident troublemakers: Olaf the Viking and Hugh the Williamite soldier.

Up for grabs will be a selection of Rory’s Story cubes as well as Eason’s vouchers.

Final call for Roscommon-Longford Garda Youth Awards!

With just over a week to go until the deadline for entries for the Roscommon-Longford Garda Youth Awards on April 30th, local organisations are being urged to consider nominating a local young person or relevant group between the ages of 13 and 21 in one of four categories. Awards will be considered for nominees who make their communities a better place to live.

The awards will be presented at a virtual ceremony before the end of May. Winners will then go forward to represent the Roscommon-Longford Garda Division at the National Garda Youth

Awards in October.

‘Big old saucer’… a less than glowing review of Hyde ... rude! < PAUL HEALY

Oh dear. Beware the Sports Editor/ reporter who’s scrambling for ideas on how to fill pages during a GAAless pandemic…

In Saturday’s Irish Independent, Frank Roche rated Ireland’s GAA grounds. Nolan Park in Kilkenny took gold, silver went to Semple

Stadium, bronze to Clones. The (footballing) cathedrals in Killarney and Cork followed. Croke Park wasn’t included, as it’s not a county ground (ahem).

I’m sure there was much spluttering on cornflakes in households, including those of county chairpersons. Poor Connacht fared… poorly. Well, aside from Mayo, with MacHale Park deemed to be

10th most favoured in the country.

The ground in Carrick was deemed to be “enchanting” but was still only placed 16th. Pearse Stadium in Galway was selected at no. 25, Markievicz in Sligo at 19.

Brace yourselves…the Rossies’ hallowed ground was a very modest 20th. Wrote Frank of Dr. Hyde Park: “A big old saucer crying out for some modern touches. Thankfully

the old pitch, arguably the worst in Ireland circa 2016, was dug up and has been shortlisted for pitch of the year three times since”.

For what it’s worth (it will mean virtually nothing to anyone outside the media bubble) Frank gestured that “we love the press box view”.

Here at your favourite local newspaper, we’re not immune to the Hyde’s shortcomings. But

we’re not happy with 20th place!

Further, we agree with Frank on the significance of the new playing surface at Hyde Park. It has elevated our venue – now we just need to see further planned enhancements fast-tracked.

For the record, Corrigan Park in Belfast is the Sheffield United of GAA grounds according to Frank – e.g. bringing up the rear.

Hurling heroics recalled…

A keen Roscommon People reader and hurling fan took the time to ‘put pen to paper’ recently and take a little trip down memory lane…

Our correspondent, prompted by a photo we published of a family in Castlerea relaxing with their hurleys, became all nostalgic about the great feat of Roscommon hurlers in reaching the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship quarter-finals in 1994.

For Roscommon to make it that far was some achievement. Waiting for them in the quarter-finals were mighty Galway. The game was played in Athleague on the 17th of July 1994. Roscommon produced an extremely respectable challenge before losing by 2-21 to 2-6.

“Will our hurlers ever reach this standard again?” our correspondent wonders.

‘Something very amiss in banking sector’ – ICMSA President ICMSA President Pat McCormack claims the lack of competition in retail banking is “directly related to the lack of energy and commitment at official level” following Friday’s announcement that KBC is set to exit the Irish market.

Reacting to KBC’s announcement, Mr. McCormack said: “The only thing more alarming was the realisation that no-one at official level seemed remotely bothered.

“The question we all – farmers, businesses and private individuals – need answered is why every

new bank that come into the Irish market seems to arrive at the same conclusion after a couple of years and then leaves?”

Mr. McCormack said that it wasn’t good enough for the Central Bank and other regulatory offices and authorities to just shrug their shoulders on a timeline that seemed now firmly established.

“Foreign banks arrive in a blaze of publicity and a fanfare of advertising and marketing, win a decent share of business from Irish customers desperate for internationally competitive financing and loans.

Then, after a few years, announce that they’re puling out and selling their business back to one of the ‘Big Two’ that, ironically, their customers had left seeking better banking services and options.

The ICMSA President called on Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe, to set up a group to investigate why Ireland seems unable to attract new banking institutions.

“It’s well past the time when this could be considered as some kind of national quirk; we need a modern banking sector with real competition and we seem to be going backwards into a fixed uncompetitive duopoly of the two old players,” he said.

Roscommon innovators and entrepreneurs in the agriculture sector are invited to take part in Enterprise Ireland’s Innovation Arena Awards 2021, in partnership with the National Ploughing Association.

The annual competition, which attracted over sixty entries last year, will continue online for a second successive year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mayo-based Malone Farm Machinery took the top prize in last year’s competition while Roscommon’s HerdEye took home the ifac Best Newcomer Award in 2019.

The 12 award categories include best agri-technology start-up, young innovator of the year, farm safety and sustainable agriculture. The best start-up and overall winner of the Innovation Arena Awards will be eligible to win up to €5,000 each.

Méabh Conaghan, who was recently appointed as Enterprise Ireland’s Regional Director for the West, said: “Despite the many challenges of

the Covid-19 pandemic, the quality of the entries to last year’s virtual Innovation Arena Awards showed that innovative and entrepreneurial activity is unabated in towns and villages all over Ireland.

“I look forward to collaborating with stakeholders to continue developing enterprise in the west while helping SMEs in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon on their journey to export”.

Méabh is encouraging Roscommon innovators in the following industry sectors to enter the Innovation Arena Awards: Dairy and dry-stock farming, horticulture, information and communication technology, cloud and mobile based software, animal health and genetics, water and waste management, environment and cleantech, animal and farm management, farm safety and leading research.

Ifac: 70% of farmers want online sales to continue post-pandemic Over 70% of farmers say they want online buying and selling at marts to continue post-pandemic, according to ifac’s annual Farm Report.

1,700 farmers across the country participated in the recent survey, which has revealed the true impact of Covid-19 on the farming community, from the accelerated adoption of technology on the farm to the rise in social isolation and loss of community engagement.

86% of farmers say broadband

is now essential, making the rollout of rural broadband an urgent requirement across the country for business tasks including banking.

One in two say they use herd and breeding software on their farms.

When it comes to farmer wellbeing, three in four (75%) say they will take the Covid-19 vaccine (with 19% unsure and 6% not planning to take a vaccine) and almost a third (31%) of farmers risk burnout by not taking a holiday (for at least a week) in the last three

years or more.

Also, three in four (75%) say COVID-19 has negatively impacted their social life, and two out of five (42%) say they don’t know who to call for support.

The survey also highlights the opportunities for farmers in relation to their preparation for the future.

For the third year in a row, the survey results indicate that farmers of all ages are continuing to put off succession planning; less than a quarter (24%) have identified a

future successor, with almost one in three (31%) saying their farm business is not viable.

Additionally, three out of five (58%) don’t complete any budgets or cash flows; of those who employ non-family farm labour, only 21% have written contracts of employment in place and only 17% have an employee handbook; and less than a quarter (24%) know how much they need to have in their pension to provide a €200 per week income from the age of 65.

New REAP proposals ‘a major disappointment’ New REAP (Resultsbased Environment Agri Pilot Programme) proposals have been met with criticism from both the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA) and Irish Farmers Association this week.

Speaking following a meeting with Department of Agriculture, Food & Marine officials in relation to the new REAP agrienvironment scheme, the Chairperson of ICMSA’s Farm and Rural Affairs Committee has said that farmers will be hugely disappointed by proposals.

Denis Drennan said it was a “very far cry” from the version that had been spun and hyped by official sources.

He added that with a budget of €10 million only approximately 2,200 farmers will be able to participate in the scheme with a

maximum payment of approximately €5,000 per participant.

“The old adage is that actions speak louder than words and it’s absolutely obvious that there is an unwillingness to invest in environmental public good - despite all the rhetoric. This disconnect between aspirations and investment simply has to be addressed,” he said.

“The good work that farmers are already doing is not being acknowledged and, given the budget, the national impact of the scheme will be very limited.

“The structure of the scheme is also inflexible and does not allow for recognition of specific features on individual farms while placing family farms farming over 140kgs/ha in a so-called Group 2 with a lower priority for access to

Roscommon MART WATCH There were good numbers of excellent quality cattle on offer this week on Friday, April 16th, with prices remaining firm due to a large number of buyers actively sourcing stock. Prices for heifers averaged €2.36 per kilo up to €2.84 per kilo, and bullocks made an average of €2.31 per kilo up to €2.73 per kilo. There was an improved trade for dry cows this week, with lots fetching from an average of €1.88 per kilo up to €2.34 per kilo This Friday, April 23rd, there will be a special sale of bullocks and general sale of heifers and dry cows.

There were increased numbers on offer at this week’s weanling sale, with a good trade for both bulls and heifers. Weanling bulls fetched from an average of €2.47 per kilo up to €3.22 per kilo, and weanling heifers made from an average of €2.48 per kilo up to €3.40 per kilo. A special entry of cows with calves at foot fetched from €1,600 up to €3,250 trade for both bulls and heifers. Other lots of cows with calves at foot made from €1,580 up to €2,420.

Our next weanling sale is due to take place on April 27th. Bookings will be accepted up until 5 pm on Thursday, April 22nd.

There was a larger entry of sheep on offer at yesterday’s sale (Wednesday), with an improvement in trade for spring lambs, hoggets and cast ewes. Spring lambs made up to €176 for 48.6kgs, and there were excellent quality ewe hoggets on offer, with a top price of €220. Finished hoggets made up to €182 for 54.8kgs, and stag ewes made up to €164.

Cast ewes made from €58 to €164 per lot, ewes with two lambs at foot made up to €320, and ewes with one lamb at foot made up to €240.

The next sheep sale takes place at 11 am on Wednesday, April 28th. The yard opens at 8 am and all stock must be penned by 10 am. Please note that all sheep must be tagged with a full yellow EID Tag set. The sale can be viewed live on livestock-live.com.

€1.8m injection for Boyle town centre Boyle town centre has received a significant funding boost this week with the announcement of €1.8 million under the Rural Development Fund towards the development of the King House Cultural Quarter.

The project is the next step in realising the Boyle Framework Plan, which is focussed on town centre living, economic and tourism development in the centre of the historic town.

The project is expected to cost €2,081,000 in total with Government funding of €1,872,900.

Local Fine Gael TD, Frank Feighan, welcomed the funding as a significant boost for the revival of Boyle for retail, tourism and culture.

“I want to thank Roscommon County Council Chief Executive Eugene Cummins and his teams for their application.

“I want to also acknowledge Minister Heather Humphreys’ department for selecting this project. Boyle is my home town and I am thrilled and honoured to be in a position to welcome more central Government funding for town regeneration following

Minister Humphreys’ announcement around the development of the former Royal Hotel last autumn.

“I wish to also acknowledge the local Boyle Town Team and the many community activists who are working hard in a voluntary capacity to promote and re-develop the town,” he said.

The Chairman of the Boyle Municipal Area, Cllr. Liam Callaghan also said he was delighted with the announcement which would “transform the King House Cultural Quarter.

Boost for hospitality as outdoor seating licence waived

Roscommon County Council are set to waive the outdoor seating licence fee for 2021, providing a muchneeded boost for the beleaguered hospitality sector.

This week, Fianna Fáil councillor Orla Leyden said she had made representations to the local authority in light of the severe impact of Covid-19 on local hospitality and tourism businesses, particularly in Roscommon town.

Cllr. Leyden explained that that the licence usually costs an annual fee of €125 per table.

“I welcome the commitment given by the Chief Executive Eugene Cummins afternoon to waive the fee in 2021. I see that this is in the spirit of the Outdoor Seating and Accessories grant, which is all about enabling and supporting hospitality and tourism businesses.

“I would encourage businesses to consider applying for the Fáilte Ireland Outdoor Seating and Accessories grant which went live on the Council’s online services portal this week,” she said.

Applications are now invited for the Outdoor Seating & Accessories for Tourism & Hospitality Scheme with funding of up to €4,000 available to applicants. The closing date for applications is September 30th.

Government launch plan to reform apprenticeships The Government has launched a new five-year plan to overhaul the apprenticeship system, which will increase the number of new apprentices to 10,000 every year from 2025, and introduce a new grant for employers who take on apprentices.

Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan, who is the party’s spokesperson for Further and Higher Education, welcomed the new ‘Apprenticeship Action Plan, launched by Minister Simon Harris recently.

“This is a fantastic path to a career of your choice, from accounting, software, lab technician to construction, engineering, mechanics as well as catering and hairdressing. With over sixty apprenticeships and an additional eighteen being developed in equine, farm management and more… there’s something for everyone,” she said.

“If you have been recently impacted with loss of role during the pandemic, or if you are coming back into the workforce, upskilling for a new role, why not take

the apprenticeship route. These courses are at different NFQ levels, up to Level 9 in Software, Advanced Quantity Surveying and Financial Services, and apprentices can earn while they learn”.

Senator Dolan said the programme could offer those who have dropped out of college a chance to explore and discover the right path for them.

“This new plan will reform the system, making it easier to become an apprentice and for a financial asset to take on an apprentice. The new apprenticeship office will support SMEs, retailers and micro-enterprises as well as larger companies to apply to the programme. If you are an employer, the Government will introduce a new grant for apprenticeship.

“We also want to see more women taking up apprenticeships in traditionally male areas, and increase accessibility for all so additional incentives are also available for businesses if you take on an apprentice from under-

represented groups.

“If you are a learner, we are going to broaden the range of apprenticeships including within public service, health, farming and green skills. Apprenticeship is good for the learner and it is good for business. Explore and discover a new career for you at apprenticeship.ie,” she added.

The new plan commits to increasing the number of new apprentices to 10,000 every year from 2025; creating a new apprenticeship office to drive reforms; introducing a new grant for employers who take on apprentices; additional financial supports for employers who take on apprentices from under-represented groups such as female apprentices, or lone-parents, people with disabilities, or members of the travelling community; targets for the public sector to take on apprentices and to create crosssector apprentices; and new crossborder apprentice programmes and potential for apprenticeships to study abroad.

As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers”, but they could also bring some substantial savings for Roscommon residents.

Using data from Met Éireann, savings and money manager app ‘Plum’ have calculated that residents in the county could save between €17 and €340 on average in April, by tucking money away every time it rains.

That’s more than in counties Cork, Dublin, and Galway!

Plum’s ‘Rainy Days’ rule automates these savings to make it as easy as possible to put money aside. Customers set a ‘moisture level’, ranging from €1 (‘a bit damp’) to €20 (‘make it rain’), and Plum’s AI tucks this amount away each day it rains.

Jess Williams (Product Lead for Growth at Plum) explains the behavioural science behind this saving challenge: “We all love to grumble about April showers, but they can actually be pretty good for our gardens and our pockets.

“The idea that the weather controls how much you save sounds a bit crazy, but believe it or not, it’s a very effective way to save small amounts. What a lot of people struggle with is the decision-making process: how much and when to save. So as long as the decision is made, it doesn’t really matter that it’s triggered by quite a random event.

“Plum also gives the whole process a “no-hands” feel, by automating everything for you so that you don’t even have to remember to set aside money every day it rains.

“Personally, I like making the most of rainy days, so when it’s sunny, I can go out and have some fun while still keeping my bank balance happy!”

To all the medical professionals involved in Paul’s care over the years, Dr. Fergal Kelleher Medical Oncologist, Dr. Sinead Brennan Consultant Radiation Oncologist and their teams in St. James Hospital; Dr. Peter Cosgrave in the Beacon Hospital, Dr. Mairead Cahill and her team, District Nurse Colette Skelly, Night Nurse Deirdre Watters, Palliative Care Personnel and Pharmacist, Orla O’ Brien your care and support was so very much appreciated.

As it would not be possible to thank everybody individually, please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our gratitude and appreciation to all.

MARCHING AGAIN… Rossies face Tribesmen in championship opener < SEAMUS DUKE

The Roscommon senior footballers will renew

rivalries with Galway in the Connacht SFC semi-final in July after the championship draw was made on Monday evening. The match will be played at Dr. Hyde Park.

Meanwhile, Mayo will face Sligo on the other side of the draw, with the winners facing Leitrim in the second semi-final.

Roscommon and Galway have met in four Connacht finals in a row in recent seasons, with the Rossies winning twice in 2017 and 2019, and losing twice in 2016 and 2018. The teams are also set to meet in the Allianz National Football League Division One on May 23rd at Pearse Stadium.

Pádraic Joyce takes charge of the Tribesmen for his second season this year, while fellow Galwayman Anthony Cunningham is now in his third year in charge of Roscommon.

The fixtures and times will be finalised by the Connacht Council this week, with Sunday the 11th of July the most likely date for the match.

New ladies’ boss looking forward to the challenge < SEAMUS DUKE

The new Roscommon Ladies Football Intermediate manager, Diane O’Hora, has told the Roscommon People that she is looking forward to the ‘extremely challenging role’ of managing Roscommon in 2021.

The vastly experienced former Mayo player, who won four senior All-Ireland medals and who has coached teams in Down, Meath and Longford, as well as a number of club teams, says that she will be concentrating on unearthing new talent in a number of trials prior to the start of the National League season in May. She oversaw Roscommon’s first training session on Monday night last.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there has obviously been little to no underage football during the past eighteen months, and this will no doubt make her job more difficult.

“The fact that there has been no minor football for two years effectively means that we have no way of looking at the players that are coming through, and the minors this year are concentrating on their Leaving Cert, which is very understandable,” she said.

“We are going to run trials over the next month or so. We intend to look at over fifty players and will then have to try and get that number down one way or another. But it’s difficult with all the regulations, and we will have to stagger the trials”.

Diane says she has enlisted the help of a number of coaches in order to hold trials.

“I am bringing in a lot of extra coaches, people who would have no vested interest in any player. They are just in to help me out, and I have got a great response in that regard. It’s great to have fresh eyes looking at players,” she added.

The Ballina native says that she has

received excellent support from the County Board, since her appointment: “Everyone has been brilliant, I have to say, and people like Declan and Michelle Walsh have been a great help to me”.

Diane is under no illusions however, and says the target of gaining promotion in the league will be difficult to achieve.

“The fact that we cannot play any challenge matches will make it difficult, but those are the rules, and we understand that. It will be difficult to try and get the girls to adopt a certain style of play without challenge games, so we have a lot of work to do. But we can’t do too much, we are allowed three sessions a week and that’s it,” she said.

This is a tough challenge, but one that that Diane is very much looking forward to.

“I can’t wait to get started to be honest.

You get used to being without football, but when it starts again, you get ener-

gised. Having been sitting at home and not being able to do anything for the past few months, it’s great to be able to get up now and go and do something about it.

“I’ve been very lucky with the management team that I have around me, and I like the balance of the personalities. All the management team were involved in the recent 100K fundraiser (for Roscommon LGFA), and that was a great way to get the year started.

“I have to say that I am really looking forward to the year ahead – hopefully we will give the people something to shout about as the year goes on,” she concluded.

Roscommon will play in Division Three of the Lidl Ladies National Football League, and will open their campaign against Fermanagh on May 23rd at home. There will be further games against Down on May 30th, and Sligo on June 6th.

Racing in Ireland this evening is over the jumps with the first meeting of the year at nearby Kilbeggan, first race off at 2.45 pm. Tomorrow evening racing is again at the Co. Westmeath venue off at 4.25 pm, with an afternoon flat meeting in Cork starting at 1.20 pm. There is flat racing for the rest of the weekend beginning at Limerick on Saturday at 1.15 pm, at Navan on Sunday at 1.50 pm and at Naas on Monday at 1.55 pm.

Scottish trainer Lucinda Russell kept the Scottish Grand National at home as Mighty Thunder beat the favourite, also Scottish trained by Sandy Thompson, Dingo Dollar by ¾l at Ayr last Sunday. The Pat Fahy-trained Danny Mullins ridden Irish raider Mister Fogpatches finished third.

Ryan Moore came over to ride for Aidan O’Brien at the Curragh last Saturday and the combination had a successful afternoon with a four-timer starting with Glounthaune in the opener at 9/4 jointfavourite. Lancaster House won the first of the Group 3 races, The Gladness, with Broome, winning the second, The Alleged, at 1/2, favourite, and Wordsworth completed the 4-timer in the fourth at 1/1.

The cross-channel meeting at Sandown this weekend, Friday and Saturday, have four flat races being covered by ITV4 on Friday along with one chase from

Perth and on Saturday they are covering two chases and one hurdle from Sandown.

There are seven races being covered by TG4 from Navan on Sunday.

Castlerea

Point-to-Point News

Next weekend, The Tipperary Hunt race at Tipperary racecourse on Saturday, and on Sunday the Ward Union race at Fairyhouse. Again, there is still no recognition for older horses or winners with only

two 4-Y-O and two 5-Y-O maiden races, cash cows, advertised each day which will, hopefully, be divided to make eight-race meetings. There were only 55 runners on Saturday and 46 runners on Sunday at Fairyhouse last weekend with only one race having to be divided each day resulting in five race cards. Time to bring back standard cards to include all categories of horse.

Punchestown Preview The last of the major national hunt season starts on Tuesday featuring three Grade 1 races.

There are 18 entered in the Juvenile Hurdle with the Willie Mullins pair of Appreciate It, odds on, and Echoes In Rain heading his six entries and the market.

The main dangers from outside the yard are Bob Olinger and the disappointing Ballyadam from de Bromhead’s Waterford stables.

Of the ten entered in the Champion Chase Mullins has three, de Bromhead two and there are two British raiders from Dan Skelton and Kim Bailey. Mullins heads the betting with Chacun Pour Soi and

Allaho, de Bromhead has Cheltenham winner Put The Kettle On and Notebook There are 12 horses entered in the third Grade 1 the Novices Champion Chase in which Envoi Allen trying to make up for his disappointing fall at Cheltenham will face five from Closutton including Monkfish.

This is one of the clashes of the meeting and is difficult to decide who will prevail, but Envoi Allen, with a clear round, should win.

Wednesday has three more Grade 1 races and the Guinness Grade A Handicap Chase. The first Grade 1 is the Daily Mirror Novice Hurdle with 24 entries.

The Ladbrokes Gold Cup has eleven and the ITM Champion Bumper 17. The Grade A handicap chase has 52 entered.

Trainer Gavin Cromwell has confirmed that Cheltenham Stayers Hurdle winner Flooring Porter will bid for a big festival double in the Grade 1 Ladbrokes Champion Stayers Hurdle at next week’s Punchestown Festival.

Clan Des Obeaux will be supplemented for and will run in the Punchestown Gold Cup next week rather than this weekend’s Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown.

The dual King George winner won the Betway Bowl on the opening day of the Grand Na-

tional meeting.

Irish Grand National winner Freewheelin Dylan could turn out again in the Pat Taaffe Handicap Chase at the season ending festival.

De Bromhead will run most of his Cheltenham winners at Punchestown, including Gold Cup hero Minella Indo and the unbeaten mare Honeysuckle.

Minella Indo is set for the Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup on Wednesday, with Jack Kennedy keeping the ride. Honeysuckle has the prospect of going chasing still in the background, but for now her sights are fixed on the Paddy Power Champion Hurdle on Friday. Bob Olinger

and Quilixios are others due to run at a meeting which will also decide who is champion jockey, with Blackmore trailing Paul Townend by eight.

Ballaghaderreen GAA Club Car Draw to take place on May 15th Ballaghaderreen GAA Club will hold its draw for a brand new 211 Kia Sportage on Saturday, May 15th.

The monies raised by the draw are being used to build a new 60mx40m Astroturf 4G pitch.

The work on that is almost complete. Ballaghaderreen GAA Club also recently confirmed that the new pitch will be named after the late Frank Kelly, a stalwart of the club. The new date will mean that the grand prize draw will tie in with the opening of the Frank Kelly Memorial Training Pitch and the return to training of all of the club’s teams.

Dual Cheltenham Festival winner Presenting Percy has been euthanised following an unsuccessful battle against a blood infection. The Philip Reynolds-owned 10Y-O was trained by Pat Kelly in Athenry before being transferred to Cullentra last year for whom he won at Thurles in November.

British amateur jockey Lorna Brooke sadly lost her life on Sunday following her fall off Orchastrated at Taunton earlier this month.
