I read a recent report in a national newspaper about a 46-year-old lady who sued the HSE over the circumstances of her birth. My son is in late 30s, has cerebral palsy and needs full time care. I always thought that something went wrong at the hospital when he was born. My other children are perfectly healthy. I also thought that it was far too late to ask a solicitor to look into a case for him. Would his medical records be destroyed by now? It is something that has always bothered me. I would appreciate your advice. Thank you.

Thank you for your kind letter. I am sure you are not alone in wondering if your adult child has a legal case for a birth injury. Quite simply, if it can be established that a mother’s pregnancy, labour, and delivery was mismanaged by the delivery team and an injury to a baby’s brain could have been avoided, had competent medical treatment been given, then certainly questions will need to be answered by the hospital. I work within the Medical Negligence Department of Byrne Carolan Cunningham Solicitors where I deal with birth injury cases on a regular basis. In order to investigate a case for your son I would need a copy of your obstetric records and also your son’s medical records. I can assist you in taking up a copy of these from the hospital where they will be stored safely. Under the Statute of Limitations, one normally has two years from the date of an incident/accident to bring a compensation claim for injuries. However, a mentally disabled person has a period of two years from the date on which they cease to be under the disability to bring a legal action. Therefore, and most importantly for you, a person such as your son who is permanently mentally disabled may still investigate a potential legal case in medical negligence. Any such legal action will be issued on his behalf by you as his mother given that your son would not have capacity to bring legal proceedings in his own right, by virtue of his intellectual disability. Well, my friend, this weekend it’s Galway v Kerry in the All-Ireland football final, but have you recovered yet from all that amazing sport last weekend? That fantastic Irish win in New Zealand, the golf, Croke Park… It was all wonderful! I know you were away for the weekend, so I ended up watching the hurling with the pub bore, but even that was okay! Was he excited by it all? Yes, very excited! ‘Bang on your bonnet… there may be a cat or kitten there’ Roscommon SPCA in appeal as number of injured kittens rises < PAUL HEALY

A kitten that recently travelled 30 miles in a car engine before being reunited with owner was one of the lucky ones. That kitten’s experience reflects the phenomenon of cats and kittens being injured as a result of sheltering in car engines. The trend has led to the Roscommon Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals issuing an appeal to car owners to be extra vigilant about the issue. According to the local charity group, more and more injured kittens are being found on roadsides. Many of the injured animals present with very similar injuries – bloody noses, mouth/jaw injuries and/or burnt paws – all consistent with having travelled in a car engine for a period of time. Car engines unfortunately prove very alluring for small curious kittens and even bigger curious cats – they’re warm, dark and cosy, providing an ideal shelter – until the car starts moving and then suddenly that ‘shelter’ starts to get unbearably hot. Roscommon SPCA is encouraging drivers to be extra vigilant as ‘kitten season’ hits its peak – and have outlined a couple of ways that could help prevent cats/kittens taking unnecessary journeys.

The group says that just by banging on your bonnet you give a kitten the chance to wake up and jump out to safety before you embark on your journey. In a statement, Roscommon SPCA said: “If you are a cat owner or know of cats near your car, there are cat deterrent sprays that you can buy in pet shops. They have a very unpleasant odour to cats only and if you spray the underside of your car this should be enough to deter even the most curious of kittens from climbing up into your engine – and therefore prevent further roadside casualties”. In the last few weeks numerous kittens with mouth and jaw injuries have been found along roadsides and are usually handed into the nearest veterinary clinic whereupon they are surrendered to the Roscommon SPCA once it’s established there is no owner present. One kitten had travelled over 30 miles in an engine but was miraculously reunited with their owner. A spokesperson for the charity said: “Unfortunately, such happy endings are a rarity in these circumstances and tracking down a kitten’s owner is usually next to impossible. The vast majority of injured kittens found on a roadside with these type of injuries usually require veterinary care and foster homes before the cat can be adopted. Given the numbers this year this is proving more and more difficult. “Thirty minutes a day resource teaching not good enough for my boy” < MIRIAM KERINS

The concerned mother of a 9-year-old boy with Down syndrome is pleading with the Department of Education to provide a special class at his primary school – St Comán’s Wood in Roscommon town – “for students with complex needs”. Cian Mulry, who enters third class this September, has been diagnosed with having “a mild intellectual disability”, however Mam Liz, herself a nurse, claims her son’s not deemed eligible by the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) as a candidate for this service. “Cian’s a student with complex needs, but the department won’t provide a special class for my son or for other children in the same situation”. Speaking to the Roscommon People,

Mrs Mulry disclosed how, during the previous school year, her son, who is in a mainstream class containing 26 students, became so overwhelmed and distressed, he “hid under a table and lay down on the floor to avoid entering the classroom”. Cian’s mother now fears that without the proper resources being allocated to the primary school, her youngest son will be placed into a situation where “he will not be able to cope”. The Roscommon mother along with husband Tommy, also a nurse, is requesting the special complex needs class, which can cater for up to six children, be made available for Cian “so that he can get his education in the space that he needs”. Insisting that the Department of Education should realise that, when dealing with a child’s education, “one size

does not fit all”, Liz has made an impassioned appeal to Minister of State with responsibility for Special Education and Inclusion, Josepha Madigan TD. “Cian has challenging behaviour, he has communication issues, he has sensory issues and he has issues with gross motor skills and I’ve asked Josepha Madigan to look at the full profile of the child”. Someone else who has thrown their full support behind the little boy who has “lots of friends”, and who “loves attending his hip hop dancing classes every Friday and enjoys his soccer and his swimming (Cian is part of Roscommon All Stars)” is St Coman’s Wood school principal Úna Feeley. According to Liz, Ms. Feeley has “appealed to the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) in a bid to get them to approve the class for Cian and for other students who need them”. While Liz agrees there are “four special classes provided for children with special needs” at St Coman’s Wood, she says they fall

short of providing for Cian’s specific needs. “They are broken into two for autistic children, one for children with a speech/language impairment and one for children with a hearing impairment, and the Department needs to recognise that there are other disabilities in schools and all need to be catered for”. Liz says she is “dreading September because Cian will only receive thirty minutes a day resource teaching and that’s not good enough. The big class is too overwhelming for him, it’s too traumatic and it’s just not fair that my only alternative is to have him join a special class in Athlone; but I am not sending him to a different county where he would not know people, when he has friends here and everyone knows him”.

Mountbellew Vintage Rally is this Sunday The Mountbellew Vintage Rally will be held in the Mart grounds on this Sunday, July 24th. The Covid-19 pandemic prevented the event from taking place for the past two years but this year’s version promises to be bigger and better than ever! The Mountbellew Vintage Committee, headed by Chairperson Mickey Joe Cunningham, is putting together one of the most exciting events ever seen in the west of Ireland. The site itself covers over 60 acres with free parking facilities beside the vintage fields. Mountbellew Vintage Committee have gone to great lengths to incorporate an actual field of corn which will feature old methods of harvesting corn from the hook and scythe to modern combine harvester.

Amongst the vintage items on display will be the car used by Michael Collins’ fiancée Kitty Kiernan during the War of Independence. It is expected that thousands of people will attend the event. There will be lots of fun activities for children (who will be admitted free of charge) while the adult admission charge has remained at €10 for the past ten years. Brendan Shine and Emily and his band will play on the main stage in the afternoon. There will be ample space for caravans and tents for the many patrons who already have announced their decision to take their camper vans/caravans/tents to Mountbellew after which they will continue to enjoy the magnificent west of Ireland.

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK A column by Roscommon People editor Friday The guy in the extremely dated ‘I shot JR’ t-shirt probably got the memo – but he may not have read it. Still, it wasn’t a weekend cut out for the fashion police. Organisers of the ‘Forever Young’ Music Festival had encouraged the thousands of people attending to feel free to go ‘full nostalgia’ and wear outfits synonymous with the 1980s’ music scene. This, after all, was a weekend extravaganza that promised ‘The biggest 80s bands in the world’. That’s why at every turn over the following three days I seemed to run into either another 50-year-old man in a Limahl wig, or an aspiring Freddie Mercury lookalike. Fiona and I arrived at the Palmerstown House Estate in County Kildare at around 4 o’clock on Friday, having hired a campervan from Craic ‘n’ Campers in Roscommon. The excellent, massive venue was already filling up with an eye-catching tapestry of campervans – there were hundreds of them – as festival-starved, middle-aged folks gathered to journey back to their youth, and a golden age of a certain kind of music. A little further on, there were hundreds of people camping in tents. It wasn’t all middle-aged people either; many of the festivalgoers over the weekend were younger, some of them not even born until after the peak days of Top of the Pops, Paul Young, Nik Kershaw and Bananarama. A 10-minute walk from the ‘camper’ took us to the festival site, where the main stage hosted the various original artists, a second stage featuring tribute acts over the course of the weekend. The first artist we saw was Marti Pellow, former lead singer of Wet Wet Wet. He was sensational, his voice arguably as good as ever. He was charismatic too. Friday evening

was really only the appetiser, but it was a very positive start. After a few drinks (€7.50 for a can of Heineken), we chatted to four merry Kildare people, quickly followed by four festival veterans from Sligo. The atmosphere was lovely, Middle-aged Ireland glad to be back socialising and smiling – and reliving their youth!

Saturday Call me an old sentimentalist, but this was a fantastic, fun-filled festival, a wonderful nostalgia trip. Most – not all(!) – of the artists still have some of the magic they had in the 1980s. It was great to see them ‘in the flesh’. Amongst the stand-out performances on a long, sunny Saturday were Holly Johnson of Frankie Goes to Hollywood renown, The Undertones, Wendy James, and Johnny Hates Jazz. Limahl was in good voice too, his hair today considerably more understated than in his peak. Meanwhile, dozens of men and women in the crowd were sporting that famous hairstyle of the former Kajagoogoo lead singer. Night-time on ‘Camp Central’ was great craic, with thousands of festival-goers socialising outside their campervans/tents, the atmosphere extremely good-humoured and friendly.

Sunday We placed our chairs amongst the 12,000-strong crowd at 4 pm, and enjoyed over six hours of live music. In a large marquee-type structure, perhaps a thousand people forfeited the chance to see Tony Hadley, in favour of the AllIreland hurling final, being relayed on a giant screen. After enjoying 20 minutes of Tony, I had to check in on the hurling, where Limerick triumphed in front of a sea of ecstatic greenclad supporters at the Forever Young Festival.

Meanwhile, what a day it was on the main stage. The legendary Buster Bloodvessel (real name: Douglas Trendle) was a high-energy star of the show with Bad Manners. Also on stage at various points were Paul Young, Nick Heyward, Tiffany, Real Thing, Heather Small, and The Blow Monkeys. Bananarama were superb, delivering their greatest hits in style. The festival wrapped up with an excellent hour-long set by OMD. Incidentally, Dublin Airport’s ‘summer to forget’ even impacted on this festival, with at least three performers – including Holly Johnson – goodhumouredly reporting that they had been victims of luggage losses! All in all, it was a great festival with a tremendous sense of

positivity and good humour. Readers might be interested in putting it on their ‘To do’ list next year. We loved it. I have no doubt that every single Limahl – and the guy in the ‘I shot JR’ t-shirt – would agree with me. *The campervan experience was very enjoyable and relaxing, absolutely ideal for attending an event such as this. We rented from Craic ‘n’ Campers in Roscommon town and they were a pleasure to deal with, providing a very professional service. The campervan itself was spacious, comfortable and ‘state-of-the-art’. It’s great to see a Roscommon-based company providing this service at a time when more and more people are holidaying in Ireland.

Monday It’s almost certain that there’s

been no talk of Kajagoogoo – or Bananarama either – in the shadows in Westminster in recent days, with the focus remaining firmly on the Tory leadership race. It’s all rather dull, to be honest. Various unknowns are vying with a few half-knowns to gleefully try and fill the discredited shoes of the Blonde Bombshell. There are four left in the race as I write, with favourite Rishi Sunak being pursued by Penny Mordaunt, Liz Truss and outsider Kemi Badenoch. Contrary to entirely predictable claims by slavish MPs that this represents an embarrassment of riches, it strikes me as being more like the Charge of the Light(weight) Brigade. Maybe one of the hopeful foursome will emerge as a great PM, but it’s all rather underwhelming. On the Channel 4 News this evening, one MP (supporting Mordaunt) let it slip when he said “the big prize is the next election”. I’d have thought the big prize was meant to be short-term stability, leadership (and delivery) for the people of the UK.

Tuesday After the fabulous two-day heatwave, a significant temperature drop today. Not so in London however, where fires are raging in a few locations in the city, this after temperatures there reached 40C for the first time since records began. All quite dramatic and arguably worrying when considered from a climate change perspective, but it was still somewhat scaremongering (and inaccurate) of the Mirror newspaper to run the following front page headline: ‘Britain’s Burning’.

Wednesday If festival-goers couldn’t hide their delight at being out and about at the Forever Young

Festival, the same might be expected in local towns and villages over the coming weeks when some of the traditional events which had to be cancelled during the pandemic make a welcome return. The Castlerea Festival kicks off on Monday next (July 25th) and will run all week – with the Castlerea Agricultural Show following on Monday, August 1st. Meanwhile, the famous Ballygar Carnival also makes a welcome return, beginning on Thursday, 28th of July, and as always featuring an excellent line-up. The O’Carolan Harp Festival and Summer School takes place from Monday, July 25th to Monday, August 1st. In the magnificent Sacred Heart Church – a few doors up from our office in Abbey Street – our good friends in the inspirational Roscommon Solstice Choir are hosting a concert in aid of Ukraine this Friday night. These and other local events will no doubt be very well supported and greatly enjoyed, particularly given the lingering shadow of those Covid-19 lockdowns. We have coverage throughout this issue and also on our social platforms. Congratulations to all the volunteers involved and wishing these and all other community events every success over the coming weeks.

Wednesday As we go to press, that Conservative Party leadership race is down to two…Rishi Sunak will face Liz Truss. I write this not because it is particularly interesting, but just to bring my ‘Monday’ reference up to date. Anyways, either Rishi or Liz will shortly be the new British Prime Minister, and soon enough we’ll be routinely referring to one of them by their first name… Rishi, or Liz!

Fundraiser in aid of Mayo-Roscommon Hospice A fundraising event will be held on Saturday, July 23rd, in The Village Inn, Loughglynn, to raise money for MayoRoscommon Hospice. This fundraiser is being held in loving memory of Bernadette Reapy, who passed away in May 2022. Bernadette was a tremendous lady who put up a very brave battle against cancer and spent her last few weeks in the care of the Mayo Hospice in Castlebar. Bernadette received extraordinary care by all the doctors and nurses there, which was of great comfort to Bernadette and her family. A great night is guaranteed on Saturday, July 23rd, with music by Mick Mulhern and spot prizes on the night. All funds donated on the night will go towards providing palliative care services in both Mayo and Roscommon. Recording for the upcoming radio feature took place in Athlone last week when See Her Elected’s Programme Manager Michelle Maher and Communications Manager Mairead O’Shea were joined by Cllr. Emer Kelly from Roscommon and Cllr. Peggy Ryan from Tipperary along with Lorraine Lally from Galway and Breege Loftus from County Offaly. See Her Elected runs free online training and workshops for women all over rural Ireland as part of their SHESchool model which aims to encourage more women to engage in local politics. In recent months See Her Elected published ‘A Guide to Running in the 2024 Local Elections’ which is a user-friendly guide to running for election. The organisation was also crowned winners in the Democracy category of the Innovation in Politics Award by the EU in Brussels last December, which was a first for Ireland.

Young Roscommon athlete Hollie selected for European Youth Olympics

Hollie Kilroe from Roscommon Town is amongst 33 athletes selected by the Olympic Federation of Ireland to compete in the Summer European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) when the event begins next week. The multi-sport event which is aimed at athletes aged 14-17 years, will take place in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia and will run from the 25-31 July 2022. Hollie (16), daughter of Fintan and Siobhan Kilroe, runs with the Suck Valley Athletic Club and will compete in the 400m and 400m Medley Relay events. A very promising athlete, she recently won the Irish Life Health Juvenile AllIreland U-17 400m title. She attends the Convent of Mercy in Roscommon. The EYOF is a prestigious event that plays an important role in the development of an athlete, replicating the Olympic Games model. It is run biennially, with the summer event ordinarily run on the alternate year to the winter EYOF. This year’s event was originally scheduled for July 2021 and was moved in line with the postponed Tokyo Olympics. Announcing the team, Olympic Federation of Ireland Chef de Mission for the EYOF, Gavin Noble said: “The EYOF is the only major multisport event for the best young athletes in Europe and it marks an important step for Team Ireland athletes on our Olympic pathway. “This is an exciting young group and I know that they will all learn a lot. The event is also very

important to our Paris 2024 preparations as we experience, learn and de-brief together as a staff team. “I am very happy too with our coaching group and I know that this event will also serve them well as they continue to help develop our young talents in unison with club coaches all around Ireland. “The sporting excellence demonstrated by these young athletes is an example of how drive, determination and resilience can achieve great heights. But of course, athletic success depends on the support of so many, and we would like to say particular thanks to the families, coaches, clubs, and communities that have come together to ensure that each athlete can achieve their best and raise the spirits of a nation”. The Irish team departs for Banska Bystrica on this Friday, 22nd of July, with competition starting on Monday, the 25th of July.

A reasonable solution on turf issue – Dolan Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan says a reasonable solution has been found on the issue of turf-cutting and its distribution. She said: “The revised regulations will protect traditional turf-cutting practices and allow those who have traditionally cut, shared and sold turf to continue to do so. This is so important to many communities in County Roscommon. “I do recognise the effect of poor air quality on people’s health and wellbeing, and I welcome the role these regulations will play in helping to improve air quality and public health. However, we must make sure there is a Just Transition for people in the West of Ireland, especially with long wait times for alternatives such as the SEAI Warmer Homes Scheme, which will insulate homes. “Older people have used turf for generations and perhaps cannot do the work themselves now to get turf home, so this is a way to ensure people can buy turf for times ahead. And there is also a natural phasing out of the use of turf as a fuel in new homes. “The revised regulations allow those with turbary rights and all ‘customary rights’ to cut, burn, share and sell turf, as long as it’s not sold in a retail setting, public place, through media, or online. There is no ban on burning turf by anyone in the country”. “I’m glad we could come to this agreement with our Government partners. We’re confident this solution will protect and extend the current smoky coal ban, while allowing for traditional practices to continue” Senator Dolan concluded.

Murphy welcomes plans for 20 housing units in Monksland Senator Eugene Murphy has been informed by Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien that his Department have given approval to Roscommon County Council to proceed with the development of 20 new housing units at Monksland in South Roscommon. He said the development, which will consist of ten two-bedroomed houses and ten three-bedroomed houses, will be “a major boost to sorting out housing accommodation for smaller families and some single people”. Senator Murphy says this is the seventh announcement of housing developments for the Roscommon/Galway constituency since this Government came to power. “It clearly shows my commitment to ensure all in our region who need housing will get housed. The Government’s ‘Housing for All’ project is clearly the way forward. It will lead to increased supply. Minister Darragh O’Brien and his staff are working day and night to increase housing stock, and this is the only way to solve the housing crisis”. Senator Murphy also urged young people trying to purchase their own house to seek details of the Shared Ownership Scheme launched last week by the Government. “This is where the Government takes an equity in your house so as to assist you in owning your own property. This scheme is for first-time buyers and is available in all counties”.

‘Early bird’ an appetiser for a busy Saturday! All-Ireland ticket-hunting Frank on enjoying Ireland’s win over the All Blacks, a house party from hell in Florida…and the £1000 house that sold for €620k! It’s 7.30 am on Saturday morning when the alarm on my phone wakes me from my very fitful slumber. For the fifth time in a few weeks, I am preparing to watch another early morning kick-off for the Irish rugby team, with this being the last game of their New Zealand tour. There was history in the making for the Irish lads if they could beat the All Blacks, because, having already made history by winning the second test the previous Saturday and recording the first ever Irish win on New Zealand soil, now they could go even better and win the actual series. However, the task was enormous. The previous evening, when I had dropped into Ned’s Bar in Knockcroghery to say hello to the

very popular proprietor – Carol’s niece, Anouska – I said I intended to get up early on Saturday morning to see an Irish win, and a lad at the bar looked at me as if I had two heads, saying that they simply had no chance. He told me that the story would be the same as every other time; the All Blacks would come out with all guns blazing and we would be sent home yet again with our tails between our legs. I must admit that he put a dent in my confidence, but as we all know now the Irish team played probably the best first half of rugby we have ever seen from the boys in Green, then withstood a ferocious second-half backlash from the All Blacks. In my opinion, they recorded what was probably (one thinks of the Carlsberg TV ads) the best win ever by any Irish sportsperson or team in our entire history. Seeing the emotion of the great warrior that is Peter O’Mahony at the final whistle summed it all up, as it showed exactly what it meant to him and all the travelling party. As a footnote, the reason I had such a fitful night’s sleep was that in the absence of air conditioning and with the abnormal heat that we are

The rise and rise of house prices It’s Monday morning, the warmest day of the year, and I find myself back at my old stomping ground, Lynn Antiques in Athlone, standing in for Paul while he’s on his holidays. Earlier this morning I had a quick glance at the daily paper before I opened the doors, and one of the things that got my attention was an article about the ridiculous prices of houses in Dublin. However, the most interesting thing was that all of the properties featured were the subject of massive overbids. For example, a house with an asking price of €450,000 now has

an actual bid of €710,000 on it. The property in question is a midterrace, three-bedroomed house in Inchicore, which didn’t appear to be anything special. The author of the piece had described the overbidding on the house as “madness”, and several more properties were also subject to massive overbidding. Of course all of this means that the ordinary working family will never be able to buy a house in Dublin. I would not have thought about it again only for the fact that a fellow came into the shop later on, and in the course of our chat told me he had just sold a house in the city for

having, we had to leave the bedroom window open. However, there must be a family of birds living just outside the window, because from 5 am on – as daybreak dawned – we were subjected to an incessant dawn chorus. There is no doubt that we all love the sound of birds singing, but maybe not at five in the morning – and literally on the window sill! Anyway, as soon as the game was over, young Mark Dowd and I headed off to sell tickets for the fabulous Creggs GAA Draw, which has two All-Ireland football tickets and a Saturday night stay in the lovely four-star Gibson Hotel (plus €200 spending money) up for grabs among its prizes. We headed to Dunmore as we were told there was a Saturday morning market going on and were assured the place would be very busy. So, in anticipation of a great day’s sales, we brought enough cards to wallpaper a goodsized room. Sadly however, when we got there the only sign of a market was a chap offering fruit and vegetables, and a forlorn-looking Tuam lad who was selling Galway flags and other football stuff. An hour and a half later, we had sold one

The house in question was also a mid-terrace, three-bedroomed one that his father bought in the 1960s for £1,000, and while it had been modernised at some stage, he freely admitted it would need a good bit to bring it fully up to today’s standards. Of course he was happy with his sale and the big lump of money he had in his back pocket, but as the economy faces such a huge challenge with everything getting dearer and dearer, it must be getting more and more difficult for our children to ever see themselves with their own houses.

We undertook not to overly hassle any of the many customers that came and went, and we actually had great craic. We met loads of interesting people and were reasonably successful with our sales. Among those we met were two O’Dowd sisters who now live in Dublin but who originated in Creggs way, way back (not them, but their ancestors), as well as a man who shared the same name as Ray Charles but didn’t sing or play the piano. We also met the Donelons from Lisheenaheltia. As we left the little village – and despite the sweltering heat – we were happy enough with our visit. The truth is that, even allowing for the unexpectedly small market, it was very worthwhile.

When parties go wrong…

One of the big developments over the last number of years is the new tradition of stag and hen parties hitting off for places like Kilkenny, Carrick-on-Shannon, and Westport, with others even going to more exotic foreign lands. Back in my day, we headed to the local pub for the stag, and it was plenty good enough for us. But at the same time, the business those parties generate for the ‘party towns’ is vital to their economic survival, so they are definitely here to stay. Over in Florida a few of weeks ago, a couple who owned an $8 million house left home for a little break on the Wednesday, planning to return on the Sunday. However, on Saturday night, more than 200 teenagers broke into the house and had what was described as a raucous party. Typically, they posted loads of pictures on social media showing them blasting out loud music, having a boxing match in the front hall, and trying on some of the owners’ jewellery. Sadly for them, the householders are following as many of the partygoers as they can, and when caught, they will be charged with burglary. Why anyone would put such stuff up on social media

– particularly when you have broken into a house you shouldn’t be in – beats me, but they did, and will hopefully pay the price for it. I also find it hard to understand how an $8 million house would not have a security system that could deter the law-breakers. My lad Mark had his stag party over the weekend in Westport, but I’m sure there would have been a ban on social media. Thank God there was no such thing around in the 1980s. Not that we got up to much in our local pubs, but all those things are better unseen.

And finally… Out here in Creggs (at least on the Galway side of the border), we are looking forward to the football final next Sunday. However, despite loads of tickets apparently being available for last weekend’s hurling final, there seems to be a huge scarcity of football ones. As usual, I have my spake in in a few places, but if you have any spare ones, give me a shout!

NewsPeople Fitzmaurice calls for Castlerea AIB decision to be reversed

A well-known Castlerea businessman and public representative has called on politicians across the board to lead resistance to AIB’s plans to go ‘cashless’ with 70 of its branches nationwide. Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice said the timing of AIB’s announcement was “cynical” and described the plan as a “strange and retrograde” move. The AIB branch in Castlerea is one of 70 such branches which the bank says will switch to a cashless service. The Castlerea branch is set to go cashless from September 30th next. Speaking to the Roscommon People on Wednesday, Cllr. Fitzmaurice said the timing of the announcement was cynical as it was made public “a week or so after the Dáil took its summer recess”. This, he said, meant TDs would not be raising the issue in the national parliament. “This is a retrograde step which is a real setback for Castlerea and which is being met with a lot of public frustration and anger. I would stress that the local staff in AIB in Castlerea are extremely friendly and helpful, the frustration is with AIB at national management level. “If this goes ahead it will be a huge inconvenience to customers, elderly and otherwise. If cash transactions at AIB Castlerea cease it is going to make life very difficult for customers. Many people rely on these services to purchase goods in shops or local businesses”. Cllr. Fitzmaurice said the onus is now on politicians to seek to have this decision overturned. “The Government and politicians across the board have to respond and see how they can ensure that the AIB does a u-turn on this. AIB should not be let away with this lightly and the Central Bank should not allow this to happen”.

AIB decision to go cashless in Castlerea criticised Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has described AIB’s decision to turn 70 branches cashless – including their branch in Castlerea – as a “hugely negative” move for customers. Castlerea AIB branch will go cashless from September 30th next. Announcing its decision this week, AIB said there is declining demand for cash-related services. The 70 branches will now focus on account opening, financial planning, mortgages, loans, savings and investments. The bank will expand its relationship with An Post in order to ensure that customers will be able to access more extensive cash and cheque services in post offices. “With digital usage soaring, the cost of providing cash services has become increasingly unsustainable,” the bank said in a statement. Deputy Kerrane was not impressed, stating: “The changes announced by AIB this week

will see cash, cheque and ATM services as well as the night safe removed from 70 branches across the State, including Castlerea and a number of branches in County Galway. “While AIB cite soaring digital use as one reason for these changes, there are many

Visit of Entente Floral Jury to Keadue

Ryan’s climate goals for agriculture threaten future of rural Ireland – Fitzmaurice < PAUL HEALY

Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice has called on all TDs – “both rural and urban” – to oppose Environment Minister Eamon Ryan’s plans on achieving climate goals in the agricultural sector. In one of his hardest-hitting interventions on the climate debate so far, the Roscommon-Galway TD said that farmers are expected to shoulder an unreasonable and unrealistic burden to meet climate goals and that the future of rural Ireland is at stake. Deputy Fitzmaurice noted that the Government is expected to agree on sectoral emissions ceilings – or ‘carbon budgets’ – which will cap the carbon footprint of various sectors until 2030, in the coming weeks. The Roscommon-Galway TD

said that if agriculture is to cut its carbon footprint by 30%, then a significant portion of the national herd would have to be culled. “This would be detrimental not only to farm incomes but to the entire rural economy. Every element of the food production process would be hit hard, from farmers and meat processors to marts and butchers. The knockon effects would be the deathknell for rural Ireland. “Farming in Ireland is grassbased, that is totally different to other countries – and the figures being used to justify the proposed cuts are not correct”. Deputy Fitzmaurice added that there are technological solutions “coming down the line” that can assist not just agriculture but the entire economy, in terms of achieving significant carbon footprint reductions.

Hitting out at TDs who are “willing to compromise and agree to a 22% reduction”, he said this, in reality, is a case of those politicians turning their backs on rural Ireland. “Any carbon reduction plan that involves the culling of our national herd will effectively be a lethal injection for rural Ireland. All TDs, both rural and urban, must voice their objection to Minister Ryan’s plans. And if the Government does not listen, then I think the time has come for the people of rural Ireland to stand together and protest that their future is being undermined. “We cannot and will not accept such a plan and the pain and suffering it would inflict on hundreds of thousands of people across Ireland”, concluded Deputy Fitzmaurice.

Following months of preparation by Keadue Tidy Towns and Roscommon County Council, the Entente Florale Europe 2022 Jury finally arrived to Keadue village on July 1st. After the raising of the Entente Flag at the O’Carolan Heritage Park, and with music provided by members of Keadue Comhaltas Group, the Jury moved to St Ronan’s Hall, where there was a visual display of Keadue’s achievements and planning for the future. A PowerPoint presentation of what Keadue had to offer was also shown. Then the Entente Florale Jury started judging ten places of interest in Keadue. The Keadue Tidy Towns committee hope Keadue was presented in the best light possible and that the Entente Jury enjoyed the day. The committee would like to thank the Keadue community for their goodwill and cooperation. They would also like to thank Roscommon County Council, the speakers on the day, both the administrative and outdoor staff for their great work and cooperation, and all the volunteers who gave so generously with their time when preparing for the occasion. The awards presentation will be held in Hungary on September 24th.

The mesh implant has had a devastating impact on so many women’s lives The incredibly cruel mother and baby homes, the Magdalene laundries, the thalidomide and the symphysiotomy scandals, CervicalCheck… and now the vaginal mesh implant (inserted after childbirth) is being added to the litany of healthcare cock-ups affecting women across this country. Before I go on, for those who’ve never had to experience the pain associated with stretching a delicate and sensitive part of their anatomy to its eye-watering limits (i.e. men), let me explain what this vaginal mesh implant is, and why many women have opted to avail of it. Thought to be revolutionary when it was first introduced at the end of the 1990s as a treatment for pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence (common side-effects following childbirth) this device,

which is manufactured from ‘non-absorbable material’, is surgically inserted into the woman’s body, where it remains thereon. According to the HSE, it’s “extremely difficult” for them to provide statistics regarding the amount of Irish women who’ve innocently opted to have this so-called flexible scaffold inserted into the walls of their vaginas, offering what I’d call the evasive response that they ‘estimate’ it to be ‘around 10,000’. What a copout! Why isn’t there accurate data available relating to a device so harrowing that it’s now being dubbed ‘the cheese wire’ due to its capacity to horrifically ‘cut into internal organs’? Perhaps the pen-pushers at our health service are all too busy this week responding to the TDs and senators who made ‘7,300 representations to the

Please stop walking your dogs in hot weather The entire country has been basking in record temperatures all week, with Roscommon being hailed as one of the hottest counties across Ireland! Lovely jubbly! However, while you’re all sweating over the barbie, basking in the midday sun, downing that cool, refreshing G&T, and slathering the kids in sun-block, can I ask those pet parents among you to please, please take a moment to remember your four-legged fur babies! I am absolutely gobsmacked at the amount of people out walking their dogs during the hottest part of the day, which is between the hours of 11 am and 4 pm. Please stop it! Dogs cannot tolerate extreme temperatures, meaning the hot weather we’ve been having poses a real threat to their health, safety and wellbeing. In fact, the situation has become so bad, I’ve been leaving a large bowl of cool water outside my gate so that those who insist on walking their dogs in this heatwave can stop and allow their exhausted and overheated babies to take a drink! While I’m on a rant, can I also remind pet parents to never ever leave their

It has been reported that many of these women are now borrowing money to travel abroad for removal and to seek treatment to undo the harm allegedly inflicted upon them by a HSE which appears to have spectacularly let them down. To add insult to these women’s physical and emotional injuries, that same, sickeningly apathetic HSE’s website actually describes their traumas as being ‘complications’, which is, in my opinion, akin to calling genocidal maniac Oliver Cromwell a bit of a pest, or Vladimir Putin a cheeky rogue!

We can all recall where we were in early March 2020 when then-Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced the first full lockdown. It was a difficult time, and we all thought a few weeks would see us through. Little did we think that this first lockdown would be followed by many more. Schools, shops, planned holidays, family occasions were all postponed or cancelled. But, given that Ballygar Carnival wasn’t to take place until late July that year, we all felt that the carnival might still go ahead. Obviously this was not to be! Instead, the committee of Ballygar Carnival hosted a full online carnival in 2020. This was a great success, reaching people at home and abroad. Again, 2021 didn’t see us out of the woods quite yet as indoor gatherings were still not permitted, so an outdoor carnival was hosted to mark the event. Now however, the committee is delighted to announce the return of a ‘normal’ Ballygar Carnival, where people can once again meet, gather, and see old friends over the August bank holiday. There is a huge range of events in store for this year’s carnival, kicking off on Friday, July 29th, and continuing late into the evening on Tuesday, August 2nd. Between musical performances, nature walks, poetry events, history talks, visual arts performances, sporting tournaments, and stage shows – to name but a few of the upcoming events – there truly is something for everyone, no matter what one’s age or interests.

This year’s carnival kicks off with a cooking demonstration by renowned chef Rachel Allen. Ollie Turner will be Master of Ceremonies for the evening and Rachel has a fantastic menu prepared. There will also be amazing stalls present on the night, where Irish food traders will be selling high quality produce from many Irish farms and stores. Tickets for the event are available on the door or can be purchased before the event. Contact Ballygar Carnival committee members for more details. Local DJ Ronan Mockler will kick off the music that night with an over-18s disco in the Mattie McDonagh Centre. The doors open at 11.30 pm, with disco beginning at 12 am. Cost of admission is €10.

Friday (29th) Friday sees the first of the carnival sporting events take place, with the U-11 Carnival Cup (hosted by St Brendan’s Football Club) kicking off in the New GAA Pitch at 6.30 pm. The Ballygar Carnival Committee is also delighted to reintroduce the tradition of Beat on the Street, which takes place from 9 pm on the outdoor stage with DJ Ray O’Reilly. In the centre, Friday will see performances from The Big Ideas Band and The Odd Sox! These two local bands promise a great night of entertainment and craic and are looking forward to making their first appearance on the main stage at Ballygar Carnival! Doors open at 11 am, and the show starts at 12 am. The cost of admission is €10.

Saturday (30th) Saturday kicks off with the Ballygar Hurling Club and Michael Brennan Memorial Tournament, which will take place from 10 am until 3 pm with the U-11s and U-13s. Michael Brennan was a well-loved trainer and mentor for many young hurlers in Ballygar, and the carnival committee are honoured to host this event in his memory. The day’s sporting events will continue at 2 pm in the Niall Walsh Pitch with the annual carnival soccer tournament. Then, from 4.30 pm

until 6.30 pm, the annual Mary Lohan Memorial Tournament will take place in the new GAA pitch, which will include a fun seven-a-side tournament involving former players, mothers ‘n’ others, and the intermediate panel. Saturday will also see a display of 1921 memorabilia take place from 12 pm to 5 pm in Ballygar’s old school. This will include a slide show of material prepared by local historian Paul Connolly. For nature lovers, Saturday will see ecologist Gordon D’Arcy lead a nature walk and talk as part of the carnival events. Gordon will also launch the newly-erected signs in Aghrane forest, which contain information on local history and the flora and fauna of the forest. Adding to Saturday’s host of activities, a poetry event is set to take place in the courthouse at 5 pm, presented by Margaret Hannigan Popp. The event will focus on Ballygar, and will feature short films, multimedia, readings and creative writing research, as well as poetry. It promises to be a very enjoyable event, and admission is free. Local musician and artist Stephen Blake will bring the town to life on Saturday evening, performing at 9 pm on the carnival outdoor stage along the Main Street. The committee is greatly looking forward to welcoming Stephen back to the stage after his outstanding performance last year. To close Saturday’s events, the one and only Mike Denver will take to the main stage in the Mattie McDonagh Centre, bringing us an amazing show of top quality country and western entertainment. The doors open at 11.30 pm, starting at 12 am, and the cost of admission is €20.

Sunday (31 ) st

The weekend’s events continue on Sunday morning with the carnival’s 5km and 10km Fun Run in Aghrane forest. The run begins at the gazebo at the forest entrance, and the cost of entry is €5. Following the run, Sunday’s carnival events will continue throughout the day, with lots in store for younger attendees. The annual Children’s Fancy Dress competition will take place at 4 pm, with many prizes up for grabs in different categories. Then, at 5 pm, the centre will host the Jack Wise Stage Show. Jack is a ventriloquist, sword swallower, magician, mind reader and comedian, and it is his first time performing at Ballygar Carnival. Admission is free and he is sure to provide an unforgettable stage show, so it is not to be missed! Following last year’s great success, the Children’s

Treasure Trail is back, beginning at 6 pm at the Mattie McDonagh Centre. There will also be face-painting and balloon modelling at the bandstand from 8 pm. Sunday will also see the return of the Ballinasloe Town Band, who will perform outside St Mary’s Church from 7 pm. This band have performed in Ballygar for our carnival parade in 2019 and again for Ballygar Culture Night at the bandstand in September 2019. Sunday’s festivities will continue into the evening, with Sabrina Fallon and Shane Moore taking to the street for a great line-up of entertainment from 8.30 pm. This will be Shane and Sabrina’s debut performance at the Ballygar Carnival outdoor stage, and it is sure to be fantastic. From 9 pm outside St Mary’s Church there will be a multi-prop illuminated LED performance presented by the high-energy circus group Renegade Rascals. This Dublin-based group are guaranteed to light up the town and give a great show. Following this, at 10 pm the group will be joined by the Hit Machine Drummers, the biggest and most energetic drumming group in the country. They will coordinate with the Renegade Rascals as they perform a spectacular fire show that truly is not to be missed. Sunday will close with a debut performance at Ballygar Carnival by Abbaesque, Ireland’s number one Abba Tribute band. Their success over the last 21 years has been phenomenal and it promises to be an amazing night of entertainment. Doors are at 11.30 pm and the show starts at 12.30 am. The cost of admission is €15.

Monday & Tuesday (1st & 2nd of August) Following on from a Bank Holiday Weekend chock-full of family fun – and Monday’s Fair Day (see separate article) – the final day of Ballygar Carnival will take place on Tuesday, kicking off with a presentation on Ballygar’s Heritage Audit, presented by heritage consultant Zena Hector. This talk will present an overview of the local heritage of Ballygar and surrounding areas. It begins at 2 pm in the courthouse and admission is free. This audit was carried out in association with Ballygar Tidy Towns and will be available online and in hard copy. To close out the carnival, the annual Monster Bingo Night will take place at 8.30 pm in the Mattie McDonagh Centre. There will be a jackpot of €1,500 on the night with many other brilliant prizes to be won. Single books cost €10, double books cost €15, and flyers are €2.

Ballygar Carnival Annual Fair Day promises great entertainment 78th Annual

The Monday of Ballygar Carnival is always a great day of entertainment as it hosts the annual Carnival Fair Day. There will be a newly-coordinated indoor market at the Mattie McDonagh Centre, as well as street traders all along the main street. The indoor stalls will include food, crafts, jewellery and much more. The centre will also host tea rooms, in addition to the Tidy Towns Tea Room in the courthouse. Magician Andy James will return to Ballygar to display his magical talents. He will be walking the streets and mingling with the crowd from 12.30 pm, so be sure to watch out for him! The Carnival Dog Show begins at 1 pm in the Niall Walsh Community Field. After the success of the 2019 show, all dog enthusiasts are welcomed back to the carnival for the show. A large selection of classes will be hosted on the day and a great number of fantastic prizes will be on offer. Find Ballygar Carnival Dog Show on Facebook for more. Also taking place from 1 pm will be the all-new Carnival Busking Competition. This will involve local talent from Ballygar and further afield. The Galway-based busking group Ol’Times will perform on the street from 3 pm. From 9 pm, Shaun O’Donoghue will perform a great range of music genres on the street, so there will be something for everyone. This will be Shaun’s first performance at Ballygar Carnival so his appearance is being looked forward to. Rounding off Fair Day’s events on Monday, there will be a performance by Spring Break in the main stage at the Mattie McDonagh Centre.

Heritage month in Ballintubber: update Traditional skills course Events as part of Heritage month are ongoing in Ballintubber. On Thursday, July 28th, and Friday, July 29th, a course will take place regarding the care and conservation of medieval castles. Funded by the Irish Heritage Council under the Community Heritage Grants Scheme, this course is aimed specifically at those within County Roscommon as part of an attempt to build county-based knowledge and skills, with a particular emphasis on community heritage projects. The cost of the course is €50, to be subsidised for local heritage groups where applicable. Overnight accommodation can be provided locally for those travelling a significant distance. Southgate Associates will issue a certificate of participation to all participants upon completion of the course.

Letters to the Editor Supports the publishing of ‘Friends for Life’ advertisement Carrick-on-Shannon, County Roscommon Dear Editor, My purpose in writing is twofold. Firstly, I fully support the right and decision of the Editor to publish the advertisement on July 1st 2022, which was the subject of a letter of complaint which you published on July 8th, by a Mr Emmet King. Mr King pleads with you several times not to accept advertisements from a group/organisation called ‘Friends for Life’, who support the right to life of the unborn. Surely this group/organisation is entitled to exercise their right to Freedom of Expression (under Article 40.6.1.i of our Constitution), just as the ‘pro-choice’ lobby did for thirty-five years following the 1983 Referendum, which affirmed the equal right to life of mother and baby? Secondly, in the same publication last week, my eyes were opened wide by the amount of information contained on the letters page about voluntary organisations (Gianna Care, Community Connect, Every Life Counts, Rachel’s Vineyard…) providing support to women with crisis pregnancies. As a ‘soft’ Yes voter, I am somewhat embarrassed to say that I believed the relentless political and media campaign prior to the 2018 referendum, which assured us that abortion would be ‘legal, safe and rare’. I have fact-checked that the “death by abortion of 20,000 babies in just over three years”, in the advertisement you published, is actually correct. Mr King says that this quotation is “toxic and hurtful language… loaded with judgement”. It is none of this, it is a simple statement of fact. In the past few months, I have noticed similar-style adverts from the same group in your paper. I took a mental note of one such advert a while back, and also fact-checked that the fee paid to GPs who provide abortion services is €450 (for three GP visits). As a result of these adverts and the debate facilitated in your Letters to the Editor page, ‘soft’ ‘Yes’ voters like myself can become more open to doing a bit more independent research. For example, I have read of a UK-based Irish doctor called Dermot Kearney who has saved the lives of thirty-two babies through APR, Abortion Pill Reversal, which are used if a woman changes her mind before taking the second abortion pill. 90% of Irish GPs do not want to provide abortion services. Gruelling late-term abortions which we were promised would not happen here, are in fact happening. In summary, I support your publication of adverts and letters which open up the debate. Maybe we could agree, no matter what side of the debate we lie on, that 21,000 abortions in three years alone is not a good thing for mothers, fathers and their babies, or indeed for the wider Irish society, and that we can do better for them by providing real choice. Gospel Reflection Sunday, July 24 Though we be “but dust and ashes,” we can presume to draw near and speak boldly to our Lord, as Abraham dares to do in this week’s First Reading. But even Abraham – the friend of God (see Isaiah 41:8), our father in the faith (see Romans 4:12) – did not know the intimacy that we know as children of Abraham, heirs of the blessings promised to his descendants (see Galatians 3:7, 29). The mystery of prayer, as Jesus reveals to His disciples in this week’s Gospel, is the living relationship of beloved sons and daughters with their heavenly Father. Our prayer is pure gift, made possible by the “good gift” of the Father – the Holy Spirit of His Son. It is the fruit of the New Covenant by which we are made children of God in Christ Jesus (see Galatians 4:6–7; Romans 8:15–16). Through the Spirit given to us in Baptism, we can cry to Him as our Father – knowing that when we call He will answer. Jesus teaches His disciples to persist in their prayer, as Abraham persisted in begging God’s mercy for the innocent of Sodom and Gomorrah. For the sake of the one just Man, Jesus, God spared the city of man from destruction (see Jeremiah 5:1; Isaiah 53), “obliterating the bond against us,” as Paul says in this week’s Epistle. On the Cross, Jesus bore the guilt of us all. He cancelled the debt we owed to God, the death we deserved to die for our transgressions. We pray as ones who have been visited in our affliction and saved from our enemies, as ones who have been spared. We pray always a prayer of thanksgiving, which is the literal meaning of “Eucharist.” We have realised the promise of this week’s Psalm: we worship in His holy temple, in the presence of angels, hallowing His name. Over €8m invested in County Roscommon – Minister Humphreys Minister Heather Humphreys visited a number of locations in County Roscommon on Tuesday – having recently providing funding for specific projects. Senator Aisling Dolan, who accompanied the minister, said towns and villages across Roscommon have received more than €8 million in funding from the Department of Rural & Community Development. “This means new buildings and centres, public spaces, outdoor park amenities. This incredible multi-million funding has a major impact which we all see in our towns through enhancement programmes – and together with regeneration teams in Roscommon County Council we can see how it brings life back to local areas”. Senator Dolan paid tribute to the immense contribution of volun-

teers and community groups. “The Minister came to visit the new walkway in Monksland. We also viewed plans for €3.3 million funding under Rural Regeneration for a Life Sciences Hub in Daneswell Business Park in Monksland. This will be a game-changer and will cement Roscommon as a word class pharma, lifesciences & software centre. “Next up was Portrunny bay, a few miles from Roscommon town. A brand new deep slipway has been developed with Inland Fisheries Ireland for angling boats. Something for everyone at this year’s jam-packed Castlerea Rose Festival The Castlerea Rose Festival is back, returning on Monday, July 25th, with a jam-packed programme of events. With musical performances, film screenings, fun runs, pony rides, and lots, lots more packed into the seven-day schedule of events, this year’s festival is bound to have something for everyone. The festival will culminate with the selection of the Castlerea Rose on Sunday, July 31st, which takes place at 8 pm in the Trinity Arts Centre and will no doubt be the highlight of the festival, but in the lead-up to the selection, there are a host of events taking place over the week that are not to be missed out on!

The festival kicks off with the hugely popular Cooking Demo, which will take place in The Enterprise Hub at 7 pm on the Monday. Tuesday’s events will kick off at 7 pm with a talk in Castlerea Library by genealogist Martin Curley. This free event aims to encourage people to find out more about the ‘Lost Generation’ of the Black ’47 (the worst year of the Irish Famine), as well as giving attendees the resources to research and learn more about their own family tree. At 7.45 pm, the Castlerea Rose Festival will be officially opening by World Boxing Champion Lisa O’Rourke. At 8 pm, one of the festival’s most highly anticipated events will take place – a performance by Ireland’s number one Eagles tribute band, Take It To The Limit. This special show will take place in the new Somers Park Entertainment Area and is sure to be a great night of entertainment. At 6.30 pm a classic kids movie screening will take place at the Hub, with free face-painting sponsored by Castlerea Garden Centre also available on the day. At 7.30 pm, Paul Connolly will deliver a presentation on The Landed Estates of County Roscommon at the Trinity Arts Centre, Castlerea. He will be examining the Landed Estates in the Castlerea area and a selection of other houses along the River Suck. Paul will also be signing and selling books at this event. Admission is free, and the committee would like to thank Castlerea & District Credit Union for their kind sponsorship of the event. At 9 pm, rock band Big Generator will perform at The Square, Castlerea. Having firmly established themselves as Ireland’s premier live rock act over the course of a twenty-year plus career, Big Generator will be performing rock anthems from legendary acts such as AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, Springsteen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Toto and more. The committee would like to thank Kearney’s Chemists for their kind sponsorship of the event. Thursday will round off with a magnificent fireworks display in the Square at 11 pm, an event that is sure to be a highlight of this year’s festivities.

Friday, July 29th Kicking off the weekend’s festivities is a park run, taking place in The Demesne from 9.30 am.

Later in the day at 2 pm, a children’s window treasure hunt with great prizes on offer will take place, starting from sponsor Tom Flynn’s. At 7.30 pm, there will be an ‘Evening at the Races’, with live on-street pony racing taking place on St Patrick’s Street. Local characters will be competing on special mechanical horses, and it is sure to be a lot of fun – so come along to show some support for your favourite jockey. There will also be face-painting on the day. Directly following the pony racing event, the free Beat on the Street event will take place with Sean Slattery and The Connections.

Saturday, July 30th Saturday will kick off with a taster step class, hosted by Sheila Rose from the Workshop, which will take place from 10.30 am at Somers Park. This event is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. There’s also something for the children in store, with an art competition and storytelling event taking place at O’Rourke GAA centre from 11 am, with judging beginning at 12 noon. This will be followed by a ‘Kidisco’ or children at 3 pm with a surprise guest appearance. There will also be a prize up for grabs on the day for the best disco dancing, as well as several spot prizes. There is an entry fee of €5 per child. Saturday will round out with a musical per-

formance by Irish country music star, Michael English, a veteran of the Castlerea Music Festival. Sponsored by Cahill’s SuperValu, his performance will take place from 9 pm in the Fairgreen on Saturday, 30th July. The entry fee for this event is €5.

Sunday, July 31st The newly-reopened outdoor swimming pool in Castlerea will be host to a Swimming Gala from 11 am on Sunday, with a host of different events such as Penny Dive, Belly Flop, etc. set to take place. The 5k Castlerea Colour Run, in aid of Jigsaw, will be starting off from Lidl at 2 pm. Registration for the run begins at 10 am. Somers Park will host a not-to-be-missed family fun day from 2 pm to 5 pm on Sunday, featuring a barbeque, bouncy castles, magic show, and much more. Finally, after a week of amazing events, the festival will close out with the Castlerea Rose selection, which will be hosted by MC Gerry Glennon. The selection will be followed by an after-party in SuperValu carpark, which will include live music from Pub Fiction. *There truly is something for everyone in store at this year’s Castlerea Rose Festival, no matter what your age or interest. ‘Take it to the Limit’ come to Castlerea

Ireland’s Number one Eagles tribute show ‘Take It To The Limit – A Celebration of the Eagles’ will become the first live music act to perform in the newly-designed Somers Park Entertainment Area in Castlerea on Tuesday, 26th of July at 7.30 pm as part of the Castlerea Rose Festival. The performance space in Somers Park will seat 600 people and there will be a specially designed stage area for performers. A temporary dome will be in place during the Rose Festival with plans to make it permanent in the near future. Take it to the Limit, now recognised as one of Europe’s leading ‘Eagles Tribute Bands’, completely sold out their debut tour in 2018 and have gone from strength to strength ever since with their first German tour scheduled for early 2023. The band is made up of some of Ireland’s best singers and musicians, Johnny Brady, Simon Casey, Nigel Connell and The Sheerin Family Band. Johnny Brady has one of the most distinctive voices on the Irish music scene and is known for his powerful vocals, energetic performances and charismatic personality. Simon Casey hit the headlines back in 2003 after appearing on You’re A Star on RTE. Simon performed live on the show every Sunday evening and subsequently his first single ‘A Better Plan’ spent three weeks at number one in the Irish Top 30 and is now certified triple platinum. Nigel Connell started singing before he could talk and has already achieved what most musicians could only dream of. In 2016 he became a household name when he entered The Voice

strations by a host of talented chefs from the local environs, such as Alan Fitzmaurice, Alison Crean, Sinead O’Brien, Patrick Clinton, Mangal Singh, and the chefs of An Chistín, Castlerea’s professional cookery school and chef training facility.

Some of these chefs have appeared at the event in previous years, others will be making their debut appearance, and all of them promise to provide an entertaining demonstration on the night! Come along on the evening to

Sinead’s more recent work includes catering for both Irish and international Hollywood stars on films sets as Head Chef at Sidewalk Film.

Alan Fitzmaurice has been working at the four-star Glasshouse Hotel in Sligo since 2012. He is well-known among Sligo diners for his delicious food, and his previous work as a chef at the Waterfront Restaurant in Rosses Point won him a series of accolades such as the Moreau Chablis Fish Dish of the Year award. He also regularly appears on the competitive international cooking circuit as both a judge and a successful competitor.

Patrick Clinton is a passionate professional baker who was born in Roscommon. Having trained in some of Paris’s most iconic bakeries, Patrick is particularly skilled when it comes to making traditional French pastries, as well as being an accomplished baker across many other disciplines, such as bread-making. Originally from India, chef Mangal Singh now lives and works in Castlerea. This accomplished chef will be sure to provide an amazing

presentation in the Hub when he demonstrates the process of making traditional Indian sweets and confectionary.

Alison Crean is an accomplished chef who has been working as Abbey Hotel Roscommon’s Executive Pastry Chef for over thirty years. Her impressive cookery skills have earned her several accolades such as the award for La Rousse Food’s Best Chef in Co. Roscommon in 2016. She is at the helm of a multi-award winning team at the Abbey, receiving the Best Hotel Restaurant Award in 2019 and becoming county winners of the RAI Best Chef Award.

All roads are leading to Castlerea ahead of the Castlerea Agricultural, Trade and Craft Show, taking place on the grounds of Castlerea Livestock Mart on Bank Holiday Monday, August 1st. The show will feature a wide range of cattle, sheep, horses, ponies, donkeys, dogs, goats and pet corners, showing classes as well as home produce, art, crafts, fruit, vegetable and floral competitions. Prize money for all classes will be paid on the day. Castlerea Show grows in scale year-on-year and this year is set to be no different. There will be vintage car and tractor exhibits as well as an on-site petting Zoo. Entertainment will be provided throughout the day by the Castlerea Brass & Reed Band, Trevor Moyles, and Danny Arnold, and Sandra Ganley of Jiving Juniors will be in attendance to crown the Show Jiving Champion of 2022. Show chairperson Susan Igoe commented on the upcoming show, saying: “Our show is a fun, family day out for the local community – and this year promises to be our best ever. “Shows of this scale wouldn’t be

possible without the fantastic support of our local business sponsors, stewards, committee members and volunteers, to whom we are so grateful. We would like to thank Castlerea Co-Operative Livestock Mart, our main sponsor for 2022. The management committee has facilitated the show by providing the grounds and office facilities as the show venue for the show year-on-year. The availability of this invaluable resource has ensured the successful running of our event since 1995. “Our committee endeavour to put on the best show we can and we have worked hard to get the show back on the road. Boyle book launch a huge success

Monument Media were proud to welcome renowned singer/songwriter Charlie McGettigan to King House Tea Rooms on Tuesday for the launch of John Mulligan’s new book ‘Black Friday 13’. In this comic novel set in 2030 a new pandemic sweeps America, but the black population seems to have natural immunity to the virus. Slow-witted President Donald Daniels has ordered his team to urgently find a new vaccine, one that can be secretly added to the water supply to overcome a

growing anti-vaccine sentiment. In Boyle, Co. Roscommon, a small laboratory develops a vaccine, but one of the scientists has concerns about its remote potential to turn white-skinned people black. The concerns are ignored in the rush to get the product to market. Meanwhile, Russian and American spies converge on Boyle to get their hands on the formula but the canny locals aren’t easily fooled. Advertised as ‘Coffee, Cakes and Charlie’ the launch drew a

full house, and was laden with surprises. Charlie McGettigan entertained with several of his best-known songs including Moone Boy, Feet Of A Dancer and Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids. Former submariner and sea shanty singer Tom Lewis gave a rousing ‘Girls of New York’, while government ministers Heather Humphreys and Frank Feighan, who were in the area, dropped in with several local politicians for a chat and some photos!

Trad and classical music for Ukrainian Appeal Midlands Polish Community CLG is cordially inviting everyone to come and support their ‘trad and classical’ charity concert in aid of the Ukrainian Appeal. The concert will take place from 5 pm to 7.30 pm on Sunday, July 24th, in St Mary’s Hall, Northgate Street, Athlone. The concert programme consists of ‘easy listening’ popular classical and traditional music that is likely to appeal to everyone. Part One of the concert will feature performances by Donal Keigher (piano), Natalia Bumblauskiene (Ukrainian bandura and vocals), Hannah Barry (Irish harp), Andriy Blyznyuk (piano), and Amalia Shmyhovska (vocals). After a 15-minute interval, Part Two of the concert will commence, with performances by the ‘Ukrainian Emeralds’ (Ukrainian trad), ‘Slava Ukraini’ (Ukrainian trad), and Comhaltas Longford musicians (Irish trad). Tickets cost €15 and can only be purchased at the doors on the day. Seating is limited. All proceeds go to Irish charities for the Ukrainian Appeal. Agriculture and food supply chain bill must be strengthened – IFA IFA President Tim Cullinan has called on legislation to be further strengthened to ensure greater equity for Irish farmers and security within the Irish food supply chain. In his address to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Agricultural and Food Supply Chain Bill, the IFA President called for stiffer sanctions in the line of fines to be set in place for those who are found in breach of the legislation set forward in the Agriculture and Food Supply Chain Bill. “The current proposal for a €1000 maximum fixed price penalty is not acceptable,” the IFA President stated. “The implementation of a substantial fine is needed to deter any breach of this legislation; we cannot have a

situation where retailers or processors are playing ignorant to any rules set out in this bill. “The sanctions need to be set higher. The IFA propose a much higher limit of €4 million or 4% of annual turnover, whichever is higher. This would coincide with similar penalty criteria as set out by the GDPR legislation”. The IFA President also highlighted the need for a ban on below cost procurement of food as a priority to ensure the long-term sustainability of food production in Ireland. “The legislation put forward in the Agriculture and Food Supply Chain Bill must include a ban on below cost procurement of food. It is necessary to secure to the long-term

sustainability of farmers to produce food, and it is also in line with the sustainability programmes which both the retailers and processors have set out. “As per Jim Power’s report on the horticulture sector – Retail Price Compression Threatens the Viability of Irish Horticulture – the continuous downward pressure applied by retailers on price will have a seriously damaging effect on the level of food production in Ireland. “With a growing threat of global food shortages, it is imperative that the Irish Government do all they must to ensure that food production in Ireland has a future which is economically viable for farmers”, he concluded.

No hiding place for Minister on direct supports for sheep farmers – IFA IFA Sheep Chairperson Kevin Comiskey said the content of the long-awaited Wool Feasibility Study offers very little to farmers. He said €100,000 has been spent and a lot of time lost for a report that merely confirms what industry and farmers already know. Comiskey said the recommendations of the report are another tactic to delay supporting farmers for what is a huge cost burden on sheep farms. He said IFA will certainly actively participate in the Wool Council, but this forum if successful will not have any meaningful impact on the price of wool at the farm gate for the foreseeable future. “We are in another clipping season with wool prices of 20c/kg providing no incentive for farmers to present the wool for further added value use,” he said. He continued: “There are no immediate pathways identified that will increase the value of wool at the farm gate and direct support for farmers for this critically important animal health and welfare practice

on farms must be provided”. The report does recognise the substantive point that IFA have consistently put forward in stating: ‘The buy-in of farmers to the potential value of wool is essential as without it, every other player along the value chain will be happy to exploit this resource without rewarding the primary producers’. Mr. Comiskey said this is as clear a call out for the need for direct support for the primary producer as you could expect from a Government-funded study. IFA has sought the inclusion of shearing as an action in the new Sheep Improvement Scheme throughout the CAP process, but, says Mr. Comiskey, “the Minister for Agriculture and his officials have refused to include it”. He said the Minister must now come forward with his proposals to support sheep farmers directly for the shearing costs with incentives to ensure the wool is presented in optimal condition for further added value uses.

Cows with calves at foot made up to €2180, while demand for this year’s weanlings has increased with bulls peaking at €3.46 a kilo, and the heifer weanlings making up to €3.59 a kilo.

Minister O’Donovan must act to save crops in Shannon Callows – IFA IFA Connacht Chairperson Pat Murphy said farmers want the OPW to manage the water levels on the River Shannon by dropping the water levels, while ensuring that it doesn’t cause problems further downstream. “There’s a large amount of hay and silage either being harvested or yet to be harvested,” he said. “The crops on the Shannon Callows make up a substantial portion of winter fodder and are extremely im-

portant for farmers. July is a key month for farmers in the Callows to harvest crops which helps ensure winter fodder is secured”. Speaking just prior to the warmer weather of recent days, Mr. Murphy said: “There have been significant levels of rainfall within the upper Shannon catchment recently. To avoid substantial crop losses over the coming days, farmers need the Minister to take immediate control

of the situation and ensure the water levels are managed appropriately to reduce the risk of flooding. This will allow farmers to save their extremely valuable crops. “In the longer term, an agency must be established which would include local farmers to manage the overall Shannon project to rectify the problems and maintain it thereafter. This must be established without delay and cannot be put on the long finger”, he concluded.

Close final on cards, but Clifford and O’Shea can edge it for Kerry All-Ireland SFC Final: Kerry v Galway on Sunday in Croke Park at 3.30 pm < SEAMUS DUKE

The hurlers of Limerick and Kilkenny whetted our appetite with their exertions last Sunday in what was a

magnificent All-Ireland decider and now the stage is cleared for the footballers of Galway and Kerry to show what they can do as the Sam Maguire Cup is up for grabs in July for the first time ever. Given what we have seen so far this year, Kerry must be the favourites to win. They haven’t tasted All-Ireland success since 2014, which, for the Kingdom, is a famine. This year they brought back Jack O’Connor to try and get them to the summit and bridge that eight-year gap. Kerry have many talented players and there are many observers who feel this team’s time has come. Until they faced Mayo in the quarter-final Kerry had no real challenge in this year’s championship. Indeed many will say that they didn’t get a serious challenge in that game either. Then Seanie O’Shea’s magnificent longrange free saw them edge home against the Dubs after a mighty bat-

tle in the semi-final. Now Kerry are surely ready for their destiny. Or are they? It would be very foolish to dismiss the Galway challenge. Over the years the Tribesman have proven time and time again that they relish playing on the biggest stage of all (in Croke Park). Galway always perform well at headquarters. With Padraic Joyce in charge they will be well prepared for this challenge. Galway have answered every question they have been asked so far… by Mayo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Armagh and Derry. Different players have come to the fore and the pleasing thing from a Galway point of view is that the narrative which would suggest that they are dependent on Shane Walsh, Paul Conroy and Damien Comer in order to win is now redundant as several more players have stepped up to the mark in this year’s championship.

The likes of John Daly, Cillian McDaid, Johnny Heaney, Rob Finnerty, Sean Kelly and Matthew Tierney have all made major contributions as the championship has unfolded. They will have to do so again on Sunday if Galway are to cause an upset. As in all big games in the modern era, the match-ups will be crucial. Galway will have to decide who will pick up Kerry danger men David and Paudie Clifford and Seanie O’Shea, while Kerry will be placing the focus on Shane Walsh, Damien Comer and Paul Conroy. That said, I think this game will be settled further out the field. Arguably Kerry’s most effective line in this championship has been their half-back trio of Brian O Beaglaoich, Tadhg Morley and Gavin White, who have been ready to attack every time Kerry win possession. All three players are pacy and skilful.

Kerry have been kicking long diagonal ball into their full-forward line this year and with Clifford, O’Shea and Paul Geaney inside, it is very hard to counteract that kind of tactic. Out in the centre Conroy and McDaid will have to have the game of their lives for Galway. There are question marks over both defences. Galway look weak under the high ball and it will be interesting to see what Kerry do in that regard. Meanwhile, the Kingdom’s rearguard can be vulnerable when a team runs hard and direct at them, and that should suit the likes of Comer and Walsh. I’m predicting a close final. While I am not totally convinced by this Kerry team I am giving them the nod to prevail by a couple of points. In front of another full house, David Clifford and Seanie O’Shea can be the match-winners for the Kingdom. Prediction: Kerry.

Horses for Courses Irish racing this evening is over the jumps at Greenmount Park in Limerick off at 5.15 pm with flat racing at Leopardstown featuring two Group 3 races, the Sliver Flash Stakes and the Tyros Stakes. Razorlight, a London indie rock band, supply the music in the Bulmer’s Live Series, first race at 5.30 pm. Tomorrow sees two flat meetings at Down Royal, featuring the Listed Her Majesty’s Plate, away at 5.30 pm and at Cork stall open for the first at 5.15 pm. On Saturday there is another flat meeting at Gowran Park starting at 2.55 pm. No racing on Sunday, a day of rest, before the craic and mayhem of the Galway Festival starts on Monday at 5.10 pm. Irish Derby hero Westover will face five rivals in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes at Ascot on Saturday. Westover will be a hot favourite to add the King George to his big-race CV in the hands of Irish champion jockey Colin Keane, who retains the ride. The Gosden have confirmed both Emily Upjohn, who missed the Irish Oaks and last year’s runner-up Mishriff, who will now be ridden by James Doyle. The Donnacha O’Brientrained Piz Badile disappointed and finished last of the six runners in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp this day week. The race was won by the Fabrice Chappet trained Onesto. In the absence of the English raider, Emily John, who encountered travel problems, Jessica Harrington’s Magical Lagoon justified favouritism holding off the strong finish of Aidan O’Brien’s Toy in the Irish Oaks last Saturday. Shane Foley on the favourite, at 5/4, held off Ryan Moore on the fast-finishing Toy by ½l with Ger Lyons trained Cairde Go Deo 2¾l back in third. The television coverage on Saturday is from Ascot with 4 races, featuring the Group 1 King George Queen Elizabeth Stakes and three from York on ITV and Virgin Media 1.

Racing News Krujers Girl, on rails, fights out the finish with The Great White

Kilbeggan Review Punters got off to a flying start at Kilbeggan last Friday night with the Minella Younge winning the Join Racing TV Maiden Hurdle at odds on of 8/13 for trainer Gavin Cromwell and jockey Luke Dempsey. Henry de Bromhead supplied the second winner Itwasfate in the hands of Conor Brassil, winning the Tom McCormack Memorial Cup Maiden Hurdle, the favourite at 6/5 leaving punters happy again. Eventually, after a delay of over 20 minutes due a dispute with stable staff over water, The Every Race Live On Racing TV Handicap Hurdle went to the 100/30 shot, second favourite Swelltime under Paddy O’Hanlon for William O’Doherty who trains in Ballingarry in Co. Limerick. O’Hanlon picked up a spare ride, replacing the injured Mark McDonagh. The Mullingar Handicap Hurdle over 2m was won by 7/1 Mr Mcphisto trained by Eoin Griffin and ridden by Ricky Doyle. The final hurdle on the card went to Lily Light Foot trained by Eddie and Patrick Harty who gave jockey Kieran Buckley his first winner in Ireland. He has ridden 31 winners in Britain,

and was a spare ride that Mark McDonagh missed. The penultimate race was the first of two handicaps over the major obstacles and with the last omitted due to low sun there was very little room between the last fence and the start of the running rail. The Great White won by a head from Krujers Girl with Duchess Ravenwaves ½ l back in third. Both Dontdooddson and Krujers Girl were tight for room and The Great White, who was leading, appeared to hold his line. The Conor Maxwell-ridden grey won by a head and was unlucky to lose the race. A difficult call for the stewards as a strong case could have been made for either outcome. The final race went to Arverne, giving Luke Dempsey and Gavin Cromwell a double on the card.

The present heatwave is affecting the number of runners in Britain resulting in mostly single digit runners per race. The British Horseracing Authority had to cancelled 5 meetings this week. On Monday meetings at Beverley and Windsor and on Tuesday Chelmsford and Wolverhampton plus the jumps meeting at Southwell fell to the forecast of extreme high temperatures. There were no declarations for the last race in Newbury on Saturday due to a trainer’s boycott.

Concannon on target in Superleague The Hollywood Bar Superleague continued in the Roscommon town venue this past weekend, with the third night of the eight-week event. Top finishing came from Martin Fleming (102) and Mark Dolan (121). On the night, it all went down to a final between two players with lots of experience in finals. Thomas Concannon had an unbeaten run in his group to top the table before a hard-fought 3-0 win in the last 16 against Kieran McCormack was followed up by a 3-0 win over Ken Turkington in the quarters. On the other side of the draw, Martin Fleming had likewise had an unbeaten run in his group before a 3-0 win over Krzysztof Wesolowski in the last 16 was followed up by a 3-0 win over Mark Dolan in the quarters. Hollywood Bar teammates Fleming and Stephen Victory then went toe to toe in the semis, with Fleming coming out on top on a 3-1 scoreline. Concannon started the better in the final; scores of 95, 115, 87 and 89 helping him take a 1-0 lead

despite a 180 from Fleming which just came too late in the leg. That 180 sent Fleming up another gear, scores of 121 and 140 at the start of the second leg putting him in pole position. However, a 140 of his own, plus some clinical finishing, saw Concannon over the line to take a 2-0 lead. Fleming kept the pressure on in the third leg; scores of 134 and 80 putting Concannon under the cosh. However, with the finish line in sight Concannon was not to be denied, as scores of 96 and 100 at crucial times saw him on his way to a 3-0 win.

Well done to both players on a top class display which was a pleasure to watch. Many thanks to all players who attended on the night and helped to create such a high standard. ARCHIE: Creggs RFC are deeply saddened by the passing of our club member, coach and friend Archie Naughton, aged only 16. We send our sympathies to his Mum and Dad, his two brothers and his extended family. Archie decided rugby was for him at an early age and joined us in the mini-section training on Saturday mornings. As his illness took hold he wanted to stay involved so he applied to the Connacht Branch and trained as a coach. He will always be remembered by his friends and teammates for his friendship and sense of humour. Some of his highlights with the club will be the memory of him leading out the Connacht team at The Sportsground, cutting the tape at our official opening of the 4G pitch, and his hugely popular BOI #neverstopcompeting promotion for Connacht

GOLF CLASSIC: On Saturday, 9th of July, Creggs RFC ran a very successful Golf Classic at Roscommon Golf Club. The competition is played for the Luke Daly trophy which is sponsored by the Daly family from Ballygar. 41 teams entered and both course and weather played their part on an enjoyable day out. The scoring was high with eventual winners coming in with 103 points, followed by a 102 and two 100s. Winners were Paddy Harrison, Michael Waldron, Mal Lyons and Sean Og O’Brien, with runners-up being Eddie Keane, Jackie Dempsey, Seamus Fallon and Peter Geraghty. If you are new to the area or new to rugby just make yourself known and you will get a warm welcome to our community-based club. NEW COACHING TEAM: This year the club welcomes our new coaching team of Tony Dolan and Kolo Kiripati. Tony was the senior coach with

Buccaneers for a number of years in the AIL. He has now taken up the position of head coach in Creggs. Kolo Kiripati, having left Buccaneers management, joins us as the forwards coach. A Samoan who grew up in New Zealand, Kolo was player and captain with Buccaneers, and as head coach he led them to promotion. This duo are a formidable unit and it’s hoped they can get the best out of our adult teams. Brian Diffley returns this year as first team captain.

Roscommon Golf Club successes in Connacht

On the Field… The boys’ U-18 team lost out to Skyvalley Rovers in the Sevens Cup semi-final. Alex Browne scored for Town. The boys’ U-16 team have reached another final by beating Skyvalley Rovers in a keenly contested Sevens Cup semi-final. After going a goal down early in the game, Town scored two through Tommy Naughton to reach the decider which will be played next Saturday. The girls’ U-16 side drew with Skyvalley Rovers, with Paige Caslin, Rafaella Silva and Daniela Kerr all hitting the net for Town. Kerr was also on the scoresheet in the second game as the girls lost out to Shiven Rovers. The girls’ U-12 team lost out to Moore United and Dunmore Town. Two of the U-14 boys’ teams were in semi-final action on Monday evening with Town I away to Skyvalley Rovers and Town II at home to Ballymoe. It was a frustrating night for Town II as a late goal was enough for the visitors. The older U-14s team also experienced defeat on a warm evening for football. Sam Malec Hannon scored for Town. While the boys’ U-12 squad one had no game, squad two played Skyvalley Rovers at home in the Trophy quarter-final. Senan Grogan and Max O’Reilly scored but it was not enough to see the lads progress. At U-11 level, the Town I Europa League team beat Moore United, with Bobby Lyons and Ethan Hanratty scoring. The Champions League side had a comfortable win in a game which saw Daniel Byrne and Samuel Godfrey both score hat-tricks. Coaches from the Connacht Branch were present, with assistance from some of our youth players. Eighty children in total attended and fun was had by all. Well done to all involved. Teams representing Roscommon Golf Club won two provincial titles in the Connacht senior finals which were played in Castlebar last weekend. A big crowd of club members/supporters travelled to cheer the Roscommon teams on over Saturday and Sunday and the weather didn’t disappoint, with perfect conditions on both days. First up on Saturday were the men’s Barton Shield (foursomes) team of Thomas Higgins and Cian O’Connor and Allan Hill and Simon Walker who defeated a very strong Galway Golf Club side by four holes to qualify for the All-Ireland finals in Tramore in September. The young Roscommon team played some superb golf to close out the win. It is the first time since 1985 that Roscommon Golf Club has won this Connacht title at senior level. Thomas Higgins and Cian O’Connor won their match by five holes while Allan Hill and Simon Walker came from four down to reduce the margin to one before the match was called in on the 17th hole. Then on Sunday the Roscommon ladies team of Olivia Costello (who won on the 14th), Paula Quinn, Ruth Lennon, Sinead Benedetti and Blaithin O’Brien defeated Athenry in the Senior Cup final. It was a superb display from the Roscommon women who were captained by Annie Timothy. They now go on to the All-Ireland finals later in the year. Athenry in the Senior Cup final. The Roscommon team, captained by Phelim Henry, was Thomas Higgins, Cian O’Connor (who won 5 & 4), Tommy Grehan, Enda Daly and David Hill. Roscommon were down 3-1 when the final game was called in on the 16th with Enda Daly one up. The loss of Simon Walker and Allan Hill who were representing Ireland at the World Universities Championships in Italy was a severe blow to the team on Sunday.
