Are certain people excluded and not allowed serve? Can I refuse to attend if I am selected? Should I be refunded my travel expenses if I have to attend? In Ireland, most serious criminal offences require a trial by a judge and jury. The jury will consist of 12 members of the public who are selected from a number of people who were called to do their jury service on that day. The jurors decide whether a person is guilty or not guilty of the offence for which he or she has been charged, based on the facts of the case. Jurors are contacted by summons stating that they are obliged to attend for jury service on a particular date. Every Irish citizen over 18 years of age who is on the Register of Dáil Electors is eligible for jury service. However, a number of exceptions apply and any person involved in any way with the administration of justice are excluded including judges, Gardai, prison officers, barristers, solicitors, court officers. You are disqualified from jury service if you have been convicted of a serious offence in Ireland; been impris oned for five years or more or if you have been sen tenced to a term of imprisonment of three months or more within the past 10 years. You may also be excused from jury service for varying reasons, example: full-time students; those providing an important community service such as doctors, nurses. Describing school transport as the “low hanging fruit” when it came to tackling carbon emis sions, Deputy Fitzmaurice said it was “baffling” that there was no forward planning in relation to demand for concessionary tickets.“Ifthe Ministers with respon sibility are not fit to sort this problem out, Taoiseach Micheál Martin must intervene imme diately. It’s nothing short of a disgrace that families that went through the correct process and made their applications in good time are being told with two weeks to go that there’s no room on the bus,” he concluded.

The communities of Glinsk and Glenamaddy were shocked and saddened recently when they learned of the death of Michael Griffin, Curragh, Glenamaddy. Michael was well known, loved and respected by all in the communities and much further afield. He came from a family of three and is survived by his brother Patrick and his sister Kathleen. After leaving school, Michael turned his hand to many jobs, doing each with care and diligence. He was re nowned as a man who did eve rything he did efficiently and carefully with a keen eye for detail and also renowned for his tremendous strength. Among his many gifts, he had a repu tation as a master craftsman at erecting fences. He ensured that every post was solid, and every strand of wire was perfectly straight and perfectly tensioned. The results of his handiwork can be seen in fields and along roadways near and far. Michael was a great conversa tionalist and could hold his own in conversations and debates on any topic from politics to farm ing or from football to music. He worked for a time as a door man in many of the local dance halls and nightclubs and in that role he gained much informa tion on the showbands and on the music scene which he loved to share with anyone of similar interests. Michael was also a man of very strong faith, and always at tended and supported the local churches. Away from the formal ceremonies, Michael would of ten call to the churches during the week to light a candle and say a silent prayer. He had par ticular devotion to Our Lady of Knock and was a frequent visi tor to Knock Shrine. In keeping with the custom of his time, he walked to Knock on numerous occasions, not alone on the traditional August 15th, but many other times as well. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane says the Government has “lost control of the housing market”, as new figures released by Daft.ie show that rents in Roscommon have soared. Describing the latest Daft report as “deeply troubling”, Deputy Kerrane said many people in Roscommon are now trapped in the housing crisis and locked out of owning their own homes. “Workers and families on ordinary incomes here cannot afford to fork out these huge sums for rent every month, when they are already strug gling with a cost of living crisis that is seeing their bills soar,” she said. “It is clear that Housing Min ister Darragh O’Brien and the Government have lost control of the housing market. After two years in office and almost a year into his housing plan, Darragh O’Brien is presiding over record highs in rents, house prices, and homeless ness. Meanwhile, social and affordable housing is well behind target and the private rental sector is shrinking. This out-of-touch Government simply don’t get how serious this crisis is”. Deputy Kerrane claimed a Sinn Féin Government would tackle housing and said Budget 2023 represented Minister O’Brien’s “last chance to make the level of changes required” to fix the deepening crisis.

Mid-Roscommon Vintage Club held a very successful harvest day on the farm of Ronald Grady, Doorty, Four milehouse last Sunday. A plot of oats was kindly donated to the club by Ronald and J.J. Don lon, Rathclyne, Co Longford and the crop was harvested with a reaper and binder machine. On a hot summer’s day, it was all hands on deck as the seventy-year-old machine spat out sheaves of golden corn like clock work. When the work was complete, all the helpers received some home made apple tart and ice-cream, which was a welcome treat after the few hours of hard work! It is the intention of the vintage club to have a threshing day of the corn at the Strokestown Agricultural and Industrial Show on September 10th at Strokestown Park House. The threshing day should prove to be a popular event, bringing back a piece of nostalgia to the older folk and an enlightening experience for the younger folk. So don’t forget to put September 10th in your diary for the Mid-Ro scommon Vintage Club’s threshing day at the upcoming Strokestown Show!
Paying tribute to Proinnsias (Frank) Redican Churchfield Park, Knock, Co Mayo Dear Editor, I wish to pay tribute to one of the great Gaels who kept the Gaelic games flourishing in London through almost seventy years’ service. I refer to Proinnsias (Frank) Redican, a native of Leitrim and recent President of the London GAA. He was involved at all levels in the Gaelic games, and in particular, the promotion of underage teams. He had Roscommon connections as he learned the tai loring profession in Roscommon town, and he would have played for St Coman’s minor team in the early 1950’s. He had fond memories of those times. Proinnsias was always welcoming to the emigrants whom he encountered, and he was the type of man who kept the flame of Irish culture alive in Britain. May he rest in peace. Yours sincerely, Mick Coyle

“Fine Gael is working to build stronger, safer communities making our towns and villages more attractive for people to live and work. Roscommon has a lot to offer from community spirit with great clubs and schools, to cutting edge industries and in novative start-ups. Over the past number of years we have seen families moving to Roscom mon for a better quality of life,” she said. During his visit, the Tánaiste visited Harmac Medical in Cas tlerea and took part in a commu nity and enterprise engagement meeting in the Abbey Hotel.
“This is definitely a constitu ency where the Government can make a gain in the next election. That means making sure there are good job oppor tunities, making sure we bring broadband to every town, vil lage and farm and making sure we deal with the challenges arising from the cost of living, as well as making improve ments in healthcare and educa tion,” he said. “I think the most impor tant thing we can do to regain ground - and we have lost ground in this constituency - is to deal with people’s concerns and worries. Standing here in the rejuvenated market Square is an example of what can be done. It’s really improved the quality of the town, and the ur ban fabric. It’s great to see a lot of thriving businesses as well”. Addressing farmers’ concerns over new emissions targets, Mr. Varadkar said that every sector would have to make a contribu tion and that farmers should be incentivised rather than penal ised.“We’re here on a lovely sunny day in Roscommon but if it was five degrees hotter we’d all be very worried, particularly the farmers. If we don’t turn the tide on climate action in the next couple of years, I’m not sure what will be growing in Ireland because it won’t be grass. The best thing we can do is to help farmers on that journey and en courage them to make the right decisions which are also com mercial decisions,” he said. When asked about Fine Gael’s closure of Roscommon A&E in 2011, the Tánaiste admitted that the decision had cost the party support in the constituency. “It wasn’t a very popular de cision and we lost support over that. Rossie Roses heading to the Dome
DAN DOONER The International Rose Festival kicks off this weekend with a large Ro scommon contingent ex pected in Tralee for both selection nights on Mon day and Tuesday next as three Roses with local links vie for the prized tiara. This year’s Roscommon Rose is 30-year-old Bernie Ryan from the Racecourse Road in Roscommon town. Bernie is a Nurse Manager in Critical CareHDU in the Mater Hospi tal and had initially entered the Rose selection process in 2020 prior to Covid-19. A daughter of Kathleen and Michael Ryan, Bernie plays football for the Ro scommon Gaels and has completed three of the six World Major Marathons, raising thousands of euro for worthy causes in the process.Bernie had recently or ganised a fun run in aid of Roscommon Mayo Hospice and in memory of her much loved aunt Hel en O’Keeffe, who sadly passed away last month. Bernie’s preparations for Tralee were hit with fur ther heartbreak this week following the death of her aunt Nancy in Boston. Speaking to the Roscom mon People this week, Roscommon Rose Bernie Ryan pictured at Roscommon Castle recently.

Bernie, said her appear ance at Tralee would be bittersweet. “It’s been a very difficult time for our family fol lowing the passing of our beloved aunts Helen and Nancy. I’ve found it diffi cult this week to be away from my family and par ticularly my mam, who has lost two sisters in such a short time,” she said. “I am looking forward to Tralee though and I’m so grateful to my fiancé John Donnelly, my wonderful family and friends and of course everyone at the Ro scommon Rose Centre for all their support. It will be a bit bittersweet in Tralee as Helen was looking for ward to being there while I have no doubt Nancy would have been follow ing the selection nights too. They’ll be cheering me on though and I hope I do them and Roscommon proud on the night”. Bernie, who has been on tour with her fellow Roses since finishing a 12-hour shift in the Mater on Tues day last, says she has en joyed the experience so far. “It’s been wonderful to meet so many people and to visit some beautiful parts of Ireland too. The other Roses are just so lovely and it’s great that I have a former classmate of mine, Eiméar Naughton (Queensland Rose) here with me too. Come on the Rossies!”29-year-old Eímear Naughton is represent ing the Queensland Rose Centre this year and the Athleague native, who re cently got engaged to her partner José, is looking for ward to doing her adopted home proud in Tralee. “I signed up for the Rose of Tralee in Australia just before the pandemic hit. I’ve always loved watch ing it on TV and it was something out of my com fort zone so I said why not?”Eímear, who is a daugh ter of Catherine and Peter Naughton, and works as an English and History teach er in Brisbane, says she has enjoyed the Rose journey so“We’vefar. had a great week touring and we’ve been given a great reception wherever we’ve gone. I’ve visited interesting sites like Curracloe Beach in Wex ford where they filmed Saving Private Ryan and we’ve done a tour of Dub lin too and visited Kil mainham Gaol and Teel ing’s Distillery,” she said. “I’m very happy and en joying what is probably the biggest Rose tour to date. It’s been surreal at times too. Recently we had a jersey night and we were being asked to sign auto graphs and pose for pho tographs. It’s like being a celebrity! (Laughs) “My family and José have been very supportive of me…my mam even helped alter one of my dresses and added a bit of bling!

A welcome diversion in sunny Kilchreest!
One of the things that al ways amazes me is how some people can remem ber so much about their childhood while I have to admit that a lot of my early life is clouded by the mists of time, and in truth I can only recall odd bits and pieces of those times long However, ago.one thing I do remember is the couple of hazelnut trees in the corner of Featherstone’s church field, which is now home to a nice hous ing estate. As a young lad I loved to go and pick the nuts when they would ripen in the months of either September or Oc tober, depending on the weather.Ihave never lost my fondness of the hazel nut and on our walks up the lovely rural roads of Lenamarla in Creggs there are several of those trees lining the roadsidehowever for the last cou ple of years there have been very few nuts on them and you would have to really search hard to find any at all. And so, even though it’s still only August and obviously the nuts have yet to ripen, I couldn’t get over the amount of them that are already appear ing on the trees this year - they are everywhere and I wonder was it the extremely hot weather that has brought them out in such numbers? I don’t know if the birds eat them but if not I look forward to a bumper hazelnut feed in theTheautumn.other thing that amazes me on those walks is the extraordinary array of plants and flow ers that are to be seen and I often wonder who planted them or how they got there. Nowadays peo ple are going to garden centres to buy all kinds of stuff for their gardens but in the old days plants and flowers and trees seemed to spring up everywhere. During our walks we saw beautiful roses in the hedges which reappear every year without any one looking after them and year in, year out, there is the most won derful array of glorious scented flowers. Unfortunately, while on a recent walk in Lenamarla, I was disap pointed to find that illegal dumping is still going on up there. Plastics bottles and bags are always to be found on the roadside and in the ditches but on this particular morning someone had dumped an electrical item, some sort of machine that looked like a blender or a mixer. I know waste charges are fairly prohibitive but you can bring electrical items to the landfill on the Lanesboro Road in Ro scommon and get rid of it forAsnothing.Igetolder, I appre ciate more and more the environment we are so lucky to live in, and I would appeal to everyone to try to keep our country side looking as nice and pretty as possible. Throw ing rubbish around is not the answer and needs to be stopped immediately.
Creggs RFC hosted a Girls’ Fun Day at the club on Sunday last. See this week’s People Sport. for a barbeque and a few ice-cold glasses of the non-alcoholic variety. We all bade each other farewell and in that mo ment I wondered when our paths would diverge once again. As it hap pens, it won’t actually be too long as Mark, our eldest, is getting married to Aoife in Spain in early September.Asforthe christening, Poppy didn’t particularly like getting her head wet but she stayed very quiet through it all and as all good babies should, she slept through most of the subsequent celebrations!

Please keep our countryside beautiful!
It’s Saturday morn ing, the sun is literally splitting the stones and we are all heading off to Kilchreest, outside Loughrea, where our granddaughter, Poppy, is having a double cel ebration. She probably doesn’t know anything about it but she is cel ebrating her first birthday and is also about to be christened!Kilchreest will always have a place in my mind because way back in 1982 we all attended the very sad funeral of PJ Forde in the little Galway village. PJ col lapsed while playing for Loughrea against Creggs in the Connacht Junior Cup final and sadly passed away later that evening.Thankfully, our visit on Saturday last was a much more joyous affair and it was one of the few times recently that our family has got together. Lives are so busy now that no matter what people try to organise, there is always someone who can’t make it for whatever reason. This was one of those very rare occasions when all six of us man aged to be in the same place at the same time. I had to pick my son Paul up in Galway as his car was in Creggs, and so I got him to do the driving as he can work the ‘sat nav’ while yours truly ends up arguing with it! And so, as part of our lovely tour of south Galway, we passed through beautifully kept villages of hospitalitypartakesithowtowns.inwelcomingofeyessuchhan.ClarinbridgeKilcolgan,andArdraOfcourse,beingawarmday,myweredrawntosometheveryattractiveandlookingpubsallthreeofthoselittleIcouldimagineniceitwouldbetoonahighstoolandoftheirwelcomeandalovely cold pint of whatever. It was just wishful thinking on my part! As for the drive itself, Paul and I were getting on grand until we came to a dreaded ‘Road Closed’ sign. ‘Diverted Traffic’ signs guided us this way and that before we came to a T junc tion…and that’s where it all became a bit confus ing for Paul, myself and even the sat nav! There were two ‘Diverted Traffic’ signs in place of course…both pointing in opposite directions. Cue puzzlement in the car until Paul managed to figure it out from Google Maps and get us going in the right direction once again!Thankfully, we arrived at the church in good time to christen young Poppy before adjourning

It’s amazing how a seemingly minor event can change one’s perspective on something. The other day, as a small plane flew around the area, I found myself thinking of the recent major drugs find in County Longford. I used to just assume that all of those small aircrafts were taking part in some innocent venture, such as tak ing ordnance survey photographs and the like (and of course the vast majority are!). But after the discovery of €8.5 million worth of cocaine on a single engine Cessna in Abbeyshrule recently, I can’t help but be slightly suspicious of every little plane flying overhead!Itseems that every entry point into Ireland, whether by land, sea, or air is being used by big drug gangs to flood this country with their poison, and even small rural towns and villages are now fair game. So now, as I look skywards, I feel as though even the in nocent act of plane spotting has been tarnished by this latest discovery.

According to figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), Irish people’s life expectancy is up ’22 years in the past 10 decades’. Great news! In fact folks, in an increasingly aging popu lation this means men are living up to 79.6 years, with women faring that bit better by living up to 82.5 years. However, if you’re a woman living in County Roscommon, you can look forward to a life expectancy of up to 84.5 years, meaning moving to this county could potentially add years to your life. On the other hand, if you were to move, say to, counties Limer ick, Tipperary or Clare, you could, ac cording to the report, ‘have a slightly lower life expectancy’. So you get it, move to Roscommon and thrive! However, and I hate to put a downer on this wonderful bit of positive PR for our county, but, (there’s always a ‘but’), given reports regarding the ever-increasing cost of living, I have to ask, can we afford to, well, hang around for that long? If you’re to believe policy specialist at Age Action Nat O’Connor, (and I do), who says ‘by December, the full rate contributory state pension will have lost at least €22.61 per week in spending power’, it’s clear that all we’ve got to look forward to is an ex tended life mired by poverty! It’s also clear that those seniors who depend on the state pension as their core income will not be able to afford essentials (not talking luxuries here), like food, heating, a drop of petrol or diesel for their car so they can get out and about and medical costs etc.
Rose of Tralee and best of luck to you Bernie, you’re clearly a wonder ful role model for young Roscommon ladies; I’m delighted you’re getting the chance to compete in this more tolerant, more inclusive and more di verse celebration of Irish womanhood. The ‘new rules’ all-inclusive
I’d like to give a ‘shout out’ and say a big best of luck to Roscommon Rose, the beautiful Ms. Bernie Ryan, a young lady who I’m certain will do her county proud when she represents the Rossies in this year’s Rose of Tralee festival. Running across this weekend, the festival – making its return fol lowing a two-year Covidinduced break - will see the pretty-as-a-picture ladies, (each one of Irish descent, and hailing from all corners of the world), competing for the big prize, a bespoke tiara, oh, and other ‘stuff’. Full disclosure readers: Back in the day when I wrote for the Evening Herald (now The Herald) and worked at RTÉ, I was asked to be a judge at what I used to call ‘the carnival of naffness’. However, channelling their inner Dua Lipa, er ‘new rules’, (but if I have to explain), the organis ers have dragged this old-fashioned competi tion into the 21st century by ‘extending the age up to 29’, allowing ‘mar ried women’ and ‘those who identify as female’ i.e. transgender Roses, to enter, it’s definitely no longer naff! In fact, you could say, it’s bloomin’ great! While I personally wel come this bold and pro gressive move, I’m sure the original all-smiling, all-attentive, pure-as-thedriven-snow cailín deas Mary (she of the Rose of Tralee ditty) would have a thing or two to say about it! I mean, who could ever have imag ined this archaic festival, (where no respectable ‘girlie’ dared to break her confirmation pledge), would advance so far from its manyget(FairganiseCouldtheIKerry-basedthehere,twoinvinoPringles,I’dÓdywhackeryandneedentcorts’,wouldthat’sass-woman?two-feet-fabulous-kick-feisty,theOirish-grannyeration-fled-the-famineherded-by-hercomely-maiden-shepwhite-washed-fifth-gentheme,tomodern-daystrong,stand-on-her-own-Notme,forsure!Nowifonlyorganisersditchthe‘malees(strong,independIrishwomendon’ttobechaperoned),thesickly-sweetpadthatisDáithíSé’spresentingstyle,bepoppingopentheuncorkingtheandplonkingmyselffrontofd’tellyforthenights’viewingfest!I’mgoingabitoff-scriptbutwhilewe’reonsubjectofout-dated‘traditions’feelIneedtoaddresssubjectofPuckFair!IaskthosewhoorAonachanPhoicoftheHe-Goat),toitintotheirheadsthatpeople,(meespe cially), will never, ever visit their county because I believe their disgraceful spectacle of animal cruel ty and abuse masquerad ing as a 400-year-old ‘tra dition’ is truly horrific!
The quote, ‘the true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members’ has been attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, (although apparently it can’t be found in any of his speeches), but you get my drift…Ireland needs to get with the programme and stop ignoring its seniors! In short, the time has come for Micheál, Leo, Eamon and their cronies to step up and stop sacrificing ourI’melderly!onlyspeculating here, but I’m assuming our Budget will contain sweeping spending packages con taining millions, nay billions, being set aside for humanitarian support, and that’s absolutely wonderful; I wouldn’t have it any other way, we must always provide help for those who need it. That being said though, that help should never come at a cost to those who built this nation, i.e. our senior citizens; our precious pension ers!
With an ever-increasing interest in healthy eat ing by our young people, (regular readers will know that as a vegan, I follow a plant-based diet), I was delighted to read that so cial enterprise Grow It Yourself plans to equip all primary schools across Ireland with their own free vegetable garden! I must stress here that, even though I am vegan, I don’t, nor would I ever, push my food/lifestyle choices on anyone, espe cially children, because I firmly believe it’s up to parents, and parents alone, to plan and put in place an appropriate diet for their families. However, I only mention the Grow It Yourself initia tive because I believe that not only is this giving kids the gift of gardening, it’s also a wonderful way to educate them around the origins of their food. In addition, as, accord ing to a report from the World Health Organisa tion (WHO) obesity has reached epidemic propor tions in Ireland with the problem being intensified by the pandemic, growing their own food may also provide young kids with education around portion sizes and the nutritional value of certain produce. As someone who grew up in a concrete jungle, I genuinely thought the four main food groups were from the take-away, from the freezer, from the deep

to arrive was a woman who was clearly not very welcome. She started a conversation with two men at the bar but it was clear the bar staff were not too happy with her being there and she was soon asked to leave. It seemed there had been a previous confrontation involving this woman at the bar. Nothing could have prepared us for what was to happen next however... As the senior bar tender came out from behind the counter, the woman was asked again to leave but, instead of complying with the request, she reached for her handbag and uttered the follow ing words to the woman who was asking her po litely to go: “Stay away from me B****! Don’t put your hands on me or I’ll cut you. I don’t mind doing the Needlesstime!”tosay, all present including my 13-yearold son, were more than a little taken back with the scene unfolding before our eyes but thank fully in the eight or nine minutes that followed the bar staff dealt with the situation in a safe, secure and thoroughly professional fashion – eventually opening the door and escorting the lady outside. As she left, she chose to repeat the same verbal onslaught once again – only this time firmly re minding them that she “knew her rights” and had the “right to defend” herself. Self-defence

CIARAN MULLOOLY On The Back Benches
At the same time, all States have self-defence laws that spell out the situations where you are allowed to use deadly force - including a gun - to defend yourself or someone else. The small print on these self-defence laws is even more revealing. The American law govern ing self-defence does not excuse any violent act just because another person struck the first blow or made a violent threat. Traditional self-defence laws require a person who is being attacked or threatened with an imminent attack to act reason ably, retreat if possible without taking any physi cal action, and use only the amount of force rea sonably necessary to fend off the attacker. All of this is great in a law book or a courtroom but in the heat of that moment in the bar in Man hattan, one can look at it in a very different way. How much time for instance, has any person to weigh up the amount of reasonable force they should use – after being told they are going to be cut by somebody who has no fear of going to jail for committing the crime? American gun crime is on the increase all the time and there are continuous efforts to curtail the use of guns in self-defence but from the drama of this, our last day in New York, you can also see the other side of the story. It’s certainly not as straightforward as some might think.
The bar was very quiet when we entered but it quickly filled up after 5 pm when the nearby of fices emptied for the day. Among the new patrons
The small print on these self-defence laws is even more revealing. The American law governing self-defence does not excuse any violent act just because another person struck the first blow or made a violent threat.
Later that evening, while continuing to counsel our younger son, we talked again about what had happened and how it made the whole argument about self-defence and gun control all the more realistic and relevant to us while visiting America. From a distance, we Irish sometimes fail to under stand the level of resistance when it comes to po litical efforts to take guns away from the general public in the US – especially in the aftermath of huge loss of life in a school shooting. However, here we had a real life situation where people trying protect themselves while keeping law and order in a bar might indeed choose to have a gun on hand to try and escape from major injury or evenThedeath.U.S.Supreme Court has held that the Sec ond Amendment gives all individuals here the right to have guns and use them for self-defence.

LOUGH REE ACCESS FOR ALL
It’s a quiet Wednesday afternoon and the third and final day of a prolonged family visit to Manhattan in ‘the city that never sleeps’ means we are tour ing New York on one of their famous open-top red bus tours. It’s now over thirty years since I first visited this city and went on the first of these tours with my late sister Nuala. The skyline has changed a little in that period but not a lot. I remember going up to the top of the Empire State building in the 80s and looking out over this vast island of concrete skyscrapers and being awestruck. I also remem ber a visit when my brother Donal drove us down to the two World Trade Centre towers, where he casually parked his car almost directly outside the buildings and walked in without as much as a suggestion of heavy security or a major police presence.Thistime around, it’s a very different tour to the same site with a very different tone too. We get off the bus at Vesey street and walk around the corner to see the place where the two old towers once stood – and spend an hour or two instead looking into the rushing waterfalls of the new 9/11 memo rial there. We then walked through the new vast underground museum that opened to mark one of the most outrageous terrorist attacks of all time. Irish surnames The first thing that hits you at the water feature is the number of Irish names inscribed on the me morial. The O’Briens are here, so too the Farrells, Bradys, Kiernans and O’Reillys – just some of the hundreds and thousands of poor people who lost their lives in such a brutal way on the fateful day. 2,753 were killed in the attacks on the World Trade Centre - including 265 on the hijacked planes. 343 members of the New York City Fire Department died here too and one of the most poignant scenes in the new memorial centre in the sight of a fire engine – or at least what was left of it after the planes hit. The firemen and women from Unit 33 in Man hattan were simply doing their job on Septem ber 11th, 2001 when they made their way to the scene. Once there, they went into the towers – all 18 of them – only for the building to collapse on them within minutes – the melted remains of the ladders the only reminder of what happened here. It’s a solemn place to visit and the truth is after about an hour there one is so immersed in the hor ror of it all, that one wants to leave. But I make sure our two young sons read every inscription and every detail of the terrorists who did this and are aware of the cost of extremism on so many innocent people. Back on the red bus and later on the tour, there’s an opportunity to get off again in a busy district near Times Square. In a street nearby, I find a pub

Whether it is a higher rate or a targeted relief, those eligible should be able to claim more to offset this cost,” Senator Dolan“We’resaid. approaching a new college semester and students are in the midst of accommodation hunting, an often diffi cult and time-consuming process. “Our Education spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has brought forward legislation in recent months to cut the costs of school uniforms, to ensure that every school has an affordable uniform policy and that no child is disadvantaged by not being able to afford a particular item, and by ensuring that parents can buy these items in multiple retailers and that they are at an affordable price. This would make a real difference to cutting costs for families and ensuring they get a much-needed break from the cost of living crisis,” she added.

“We are urging the Govern ment to support Sinn Féin’s legislation to deliver a muchneeded break for families hit by the cost of living crisis. Families need urgent help with back-toschool costs now”.
Kerrane calls for action on uniform costs
Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has called for urgent action to cut school uniform costs, stating that families were now under increasing pressure ahead of the new term in September.
“School uniform costs are far too high and are putting huge pressure on families’ finances. Families are already being hit by the cost of living crisis, as prices are spiralling and many simply cannot afford these backto-school costs which can reach thousands of Euro,” she said. Deputy Kerrane said families across Roscommon and Galway are struggling to keep up with back-to-school costs and need urgent help.
“We see families here in Ro scommon and Galway spend ing hundreds of euro on school uniforms, tracksuits, shoes and other items of clothing every summer and the huge financial burden this causes families. Many will be worrying about how they will manage to pay that this year,” she said, claim ing that Sinn Féin were commit ted to cutting costs on uniforms, books, and school.

The filmmaker says he is fortunate to have some previous footage of the much-loved priest from when he completed a film called ‘Roscom mon Revealed’ in 2011 and praised Fr. Browne’s extensive knowledge of the local area.
Carlos, Sweeney and McCartin to play Coleman Music Centre on August 31st
As part of his latest production, Ronan has visited a number of locations with close ties to Fr. Browne’s life.
“Recently I spent the day in Sligo with my mother as I filmed at places linked to his youth. His sister Louise was a great help in guiding us to the various locations in question,” he said. “Earlier in the year there was an out ing to Drumboylan with Bernie Kear ney who had lined up many of the stalwarts to have known and worked with Fr. Ray during his tenure there. It’s clear from interviewing those individu als that some of Fr. Ray’s projects were successful and some weren’t. Never theless, a sense of despair and resig nation were certainly not a part of his vocabulary!”Ronansaid that following Fr. Ray’s passing, Deacon Seamus Talbot provid ed assistance in sorting through a vast archive of pictures, videos, and audio files. He is also grateful to Fr. Browne’s family for allowing him to do so.
“One comment to frequently pop up from talking to those who knew Fr. Browne was that he was ahead of his time. While the many major projects he was involved in over the years showed tremendous vision, he also had the foresight to recognize that recording simple community events for posterity is important,” he said and highlighted the assistance of local people including former Senator Terry Leyden in track ing down old footage. If you have photographs, video or audio clips featuring the late Rev. Fr. Browne, please contact Ronan Carley on 086-3503732 or email ronancar ley@gmail.com. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

DAN DOONER A local filmmaker is seeking help in order to complete a documentary de tailing the life of the late Rev. Fr. Ray mond Browne, former parish priest of Kilbride.Fourmilehouse native, Ronan Car ley, has called on those with old pho tographs, video clips and memories of Fr. Browne to get in touch ahead of the premiere of ‘Fr Ray – A life of Service’ at Roscommon Arts Centre on Thurs day, 27th and Friday, 28th of October. Speaking to the Roscommon People recently, Ronan, a Primary School teacher based in Navan, said the docu mentary had been a most interesting project to work on. He also credited the late Fr. Browne with giving him his first ‘start’ in the film industry as he and his young siblings recorded one of the priest’s pilgrimages to Iona in Scotland. “Fr. Ray had one of those old-style shoulder mounted cameras. It was probably bigger than myself and a less trusting individual might have been re luctant to let it out of their hands! How ever, one of his constant mantras was to give youth a chance,” he said. “Fr. Ray would have been familiar to people the length and breadth of the county for his community activism. He was one of those incredibly dynamic people who seemed to have an endless reservoir of energy. If he committed to an endeavor then he was all in-there were no half measures,” he said. “Born in Sligo and educated in Sum merhill, he was ordained in 1954 and spent four years in Nigeria where he worked on the missions. After re turning from Africa he was curate in Drumboylan in north Roscommon, for fourteen years. From there, he spent another fourteen years as curate in Ro scommon town. His final parish, where he was to spend thirty-four years was my own parish, Kilbride. Somewhere in the middle of all that he managed to fit in a stint as National Chairman of the Muintir na Tire organisation!”
Ronan said that in the months before Fr. Ray passed in 2020, he had con ducted an interview with him in Four milehouse.“Covidhad restricted him somewhat. However, never one to sit idly around, he had just completed a book called ‘Souvenir-Cocooning and remem (Right) Fr RaymondCalabar, footballpicturedBrownewithateaminNigeria.

On Thursday last (August 11th), the world famous scientist and academic, Dr. Temple Grandin, visited the Sunflower Garden Project on Antogher Road, Ro scommon. This project is a social farming initiative by the Brothers of Charity Roscommon and its aim is to provide a meaningful place of work and recreation for people with intellectual disability. Dr. Grandin is famous world wide for her work as an advocate for people with autism and also as an animal behaviour scientist. Being autistic herself, she speaks with great authority on the subject and stresses the need for appropri ate early intervention, recognition and respect for each individual’s talents and gifts and the work needed to foster these gifts. She recounted how some of the great est minds in areas of scientific discovery and art were people who were/are “on the spectrum”. The spectrum, she said, ranges from people such as Michael angelo, Albert Einstein, Elon Musk, Steve Jobs on one end to profoundly disabled people who are non-verbal and need constant care at the other. In between are a range of people with varying levels of abilities and disabilities. She stressed the valuable role that many of these people can have in many workplace situations and the need to foster their talents through appropriate education. There was an hour-long ques tion and answer session where staff from the Brothers of Char ity were able to engage with Dr. Grandin and to gain further in sights into the autistic mindset from an expert in the area. Before leaving the garden she was pre sented with a small plaque from the Wild Goose Studio depicting a bronze casting of a sunflower with the legend “It is always summer somewhere”. She very graciously posed for photographs and was fulsome in her praise of the practical nature of the project. Dr. Grandin’s visit to Sunflower Garden Project was facilitated by Donal Connolly and Brendan Gardiner of the Aleen Cust Com memoration Committee and Lor na Kennedy of Kepak Athleague. Kepak were the main sponsors of Dr. Grandin’s visit to Ireland and she was the keynote speaker at a number of events in Mountbellew and Athleague over the course of the weekend.

From an early age she wanted to be a vet but came up against many barriers in her quest because she was a woman. She trained for a while as a nurse in England but gave that up to study veterinary science in Edin burgh. She completed her studies in 1897 although she was barred from taking her final exams, a decision she challenged in the courts but to no avail. own struggles as a young woman with autism trying to make her way in a male dominated world.

Castlerea MART WATCH Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue has an nounced this week that Ireland will no tify the EU Commission of its intention to avail of a derogation for cereal farmers in relation to the crop diversification rules for 2023. This change will provide maximum flex ibility for farmers regarding their plant ing decisions in the coming weeks and months. The relaxation of these rules is part of the EU response to the Russian in vasion of Ukraine. It is aimed at address ing the heightened food security concerns related to global food availability and af fordability.
“I had far more trouble with being a woman than having autism I can assure you,” she told those pre sent. With regard to the fu ture of farming under the cloud of global warming, Dr. Grandin said: “We can find solutions, not a lot of people know that broken oil field equipment around the world is contributing the same amount to global warming as grazing the land is. There have been very many encouraging studies with regard to bison herds in the USA (in terms of emissions) and I am con fident that we can adopt those ideas worldwide. Remember too that only 20 per cent of the world’s land can be grazed. It can be done, but it must be sustain able,” she said. Dr. Grandin said that her autism helped her realize that visual thinking is also very important while trying to solve problems. “We need the mathema ticians and academics for sure but we also need people who look at things differently and that has al ways been my way of do ing things. Visual thinking is equally important in so many ways,” she said. She praised the spirit of Aleen Cust who she said was ‘a pioneer’. “She refused to give way to all the obstacles that were put in her way and she gave women a voice,” she said.
“This change should be seen as com plementing the measures already taken by the Government in 2022 to encour age Irish farmers to grow more tillage crops which in turn will help towards producing more food,” said the Minister.

In relation to 2024, Minister McCona logue added: “My officials are engag ing with EU Commission services in relation to the crop diversification and crop rotation requirements from 2024. I am pleased to announce that a hybrid of Crop Diversification and Crop Rota tion, suitable to the Irish situation, has been agreed with the European Com mission”.

Local finalists in Irish Food Awards
According to analysis carried out by economic research organisation, Indecon, the Western De velopment Commission’s Western Investment Fund has given the Irish econ omy a €3.3 billion boost since it was first estab lished 20 years ago. Indecon says the fund has provided “an impressive contribution to economic activity in the western re gion and has made a sig nificant contribution to the national economy”. The fund, it says, has achieved a financial return on investment of almost two and a half times its original Exchequer alloca tion of €31.75 million, has been self-financing since 2010 and and is currently valued at €73 million. The WDC Investment Fund provides seed and venture capital and loan finance to companies and community projects across Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo, Galway and Clare. It coinvests with private sector investors on a commercial basis and all returns are reinvested back into the region. The contribution of com panies supported by the fund to Ireland’s economy since 2001 is estimated by Indecon to be almost €3.3 billion.Interms of employment, the research found that at least 5,300 jobs are sup ported by fund-supported companies or enterprises when economy-wide impacts are considered. Through the payment of taxes, companies have contributed more than €276 million to the State.
A total of five Roscommon food producers have been named as finalists in this year’s Irish Food Awards, which take place in Kerry next month. Ballaghaderreen Bacon Factory Ltd, Waldron Fam ily Meats from Brideswell, Do Me A Flavour, Eat Unique, and Oliver Carty and Family have been cho sen across a wide range of categories. According to the latest EY Future Consumer Index, more than two thirds of consumers are being put off buying sus tainable goods due to the rising cost of living. The research, which includes a survey of 18,000 global consumers conducted between May and June, found that nearly 80 per cent were concerned about their finances, while more than 60 per cent expected their living costs to rise further in the coming six months. The report shows that these concerns are not just affect ing the people on lower incomes but it is the concern for people of all income levels. Due to a massive reduction in consumer confidence, the research reveals a very pessimistic outlook on our econo my, especially from the western markets when compared to emerging or other markets. “Irish Inflation has risen to levels not seen since the 1980s, and as prices continue to rise there is increased pressure placed upon household budgets throughout the country,” said Ivan O’Brien, EY Ireland Consulting Partner. The findings of the report show that more than one in three consumers are worried about having enough money to spend on things other than just living expenses. “Irish consumers are responding by becoming more pru dent in their weekly grocery shop, holding on to clothes a little longer and reducing their spend on hospitality,” said Mr“OurO’Brien.urgeto embrace sustainable products is also chal lenged, as inflation forces push consumers to re-prioritise how they spend. It is very likely that some new frugal life style habits will stick,” he concluded.

UNFAILING NOVENA PRAYER TO ST. ANTHONY Oh Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for His creatures made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so, you are the ‘Saint of Miracles’. O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sym pathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the Sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms, and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Publication promised for a great favour received. A.M.K.

SEAMUS DUKE Hodson Bay Hotel SFC Group C St. Brigid’s v Pádraig Pearses on Sunday in Ballyforan at 3 pm The two teams at the top of the betting to win the senior football championship this year clash in Bal lyforan on Sunday, and while a loss for either side won’t be a disaster, both will want to lay down a marker for later in the championship.
The big game is between St. Brigid’s and Pádraig Pearses, but the other game in this group is a local derby on Saturday as Tulsk take on Strokestown. Tulsk were well beaten by St. Brigid’s in round one and it would be a surprise if they were to beat Strokestown who played very well in the second half against St. Brigid’s.

Pearses, after an indifferent early season, really set about their championship task with relish in the opening round against Tulsk with a thumping vic tory. Most of the familiar names were back and fir ing on all cylinders too. The Dalys, Davy Murray, and Paul Carey were prominent, but there is increas ingly important roles being played by the younger guns like Caelim Keogh, Eoin Colleran and Conor Lohan. It’s already beginning to look slightly omi
All the action in Group A takes place on Friday night. Roscommon Gaels host Elphin at Lisnam ult and both sides now need a win from their last two matches to ensure that they get through. The Gaels battled well against Oran but were poor in at tack while Ephin were caught by a late Stuart Daly goal in round one. If manager Frankie Dolan can solve the Gaels’ woes up front they should be good enough to win. Michael Glavey’s welcome Oran to Ballinlough and there won’t be much between these sides. Both won their opening round games so the pressure is off here. Time to sit on the fence and go for a draw!
Both games in Group B are on Saturday at 5 pm. Boyle were impressive against Western Gaels in round one and they should have the measure of St. Faithleach’s in Ballyleague. In Frenchpark, Western Gaels will be anxious to get a win on the board when they play Clann na nGael. Clann were less than impressive against St. Faithleach’s in the last round so Western Gaels could cause a shock here as their need for a win is more immediate.
Group C Kilbride will need to improve after their heavy de feat to Castlerea in round one. They entertain anÉire Óg team who just pipped Clann na nGael. At home, Kilbride will be hoping to register their first win. They might just about be good enough. Castlerea St. Kevin’s will want to be careful as they make the long journey to Johnstown. With Adam McDermott leading the way, they should have enough in the tank to win their second game on the trot.
Group C
Callington Ltd IFC Group A No real surprises in this ‘group of death’ in round one, and another cracking game is in store at Mul hern Park as Fuerty host St. Croan’s. The visitors might just be good enough but it will be close. Elsewhere, Creggs showed a lot of bottle against Croan’s in their exciting draw in round one and they should have enough to defeat a battling Kilmore by a couple of points on home ground.
Group B
36 Roscommon People Friday 19 August 2022
Group B There is a very interesting local derby in Kiltoom on Saturday as St. Brigid’s take on St. Dominic’s. Brigids are a good side and Dominic’s will have to be at their very best to prevail. They should do, but it will be close. St. Aidan’s were disappointed to lose to St. Brig id’s in round one and they have a ‘must win’ game against Shannon Gaels on Saturday evening. There won’t be much in this one either with a draw per haps the best bet.

WEEKENDOFGAMETHE
Pearses and Brigid’s face off this Sunday! nous for their rivals. St. Brigid’s were impressive too but they were giv en a real test by Strokestown in the opening round, especially in the second half. James Martin, Brian Stack, Darragh Sheehy, Ro nan Stack, and Eddie Nolan supply the experience but Paul McGrath, Shane Cunnane, Ben O’Carroll, Ciaran Sugrue and Bobby Nugent are outstanding young players and will surely give Pearses plenty to think about on Sunday. Maybe Brigid’s would get more from a win at this stage of the season and so they get a hesitant vote. Prediction: St. Brigid’s Group A

WalshetitleConnachtfor St. Coman’s man Colm Walshe won the 60x30 Junior ‘B’ Connacht title last Sunday in his home court in Roscom mon. He beat Moycullen’s Jack McNeela 21-17, 21-8 in a tough encounter. Early in the first it looked like Colm would win comfortably, but the longer the game went on the more Colm’s question able fitness came into play. He managed to hang on in a tight finish to take the first by four points, but it looked like he would struggle in the second. However, he cruised into a 10-0 lead exhibiting his classy left corner killing and again looked like he was heading for a straightforward win, but McNeela immediately brought it back to 7-10, with Colm looking the worse for wear. Colm then reverted to volleying the ball and kill ing at every opportunity and eventually pulled away to win the second on a deceiving 21-8 scoreline. Colm will face Cavan’s Cian McManus in the All-Ireland semi-final this Sunday in St. ShaughnessyBallintubberComan’s.duoDannyandMartin Conroy came up short in their 60x30 Golden Masters ‘B’ Doubles Connacht final against Mayo on Saturday last. The left-right combina tion got off to a great start in the first when they couldn’t put a foot wrong, winning 217. However, that was as good as it got, as their first game en deavours exhausted them and remarkably, they lost the two remaining games to zero. Fiona Tully was beaten in her 60x30 Senior All-Ireland quarter-final by Limerick’s outstanding Martina McMa hon last Saturday in Crinkle, Co. Offaly. Fiona gave Mc Mahon quite a few problems in the first set but bit by bit the physical strength and power difference took its toll on the much smaller Roscommon girl. McMahon took the first 21-13 and really hammered home her advantage in the second, winning 21-3. Following up on their widely praised co-hosting of the Wallball Nationals, St. Coman’s got a further boost on Saturday when it was an nounced that the club will host all the 60x30 male and female Senior All-Ireland semi-finals and finals in the coming fort night alongside both Minor fi nals. This is a great honor for the renowned club and further confirmation of its high stand ing in the world of handball. The semi-finals will be held this Saturday (20th) and will feature such names as Robbie McCarthy, Gary McConnell, Catriona Casey and Martina McMahon. For anyone with an interest in the game this is a great opportunity to see top-notch handball up close and personal, as from next year onwards the All-Ireland series will be held in the new state-of-the-art Croke Park complex.

Sean Fleming was once again the winner in The Hollywood Bar Superleague last Friday night. The final came down to the wire with Fleming defeat ing Rory Hunt by a single leg. Top finishing on the night came from Ken Turkington (100), Alan Owens (112), Mick Egan (100 and 116 as well as 11 and 13-dart legs), Sean Fleming (107 and 118), and Brian McCormack (124), but the highest checkout of the night went to finalist Rory Hunt with a 125 finish. Rory had sealed his place in that final thanks to a 3-0 win over Aaron Shannon in the last 16, before a hard-fought 3-2 win over Thomas Concannon in the quarter-finals, and a 3-1 win over Wayne Harries in the semi-finals. On the other side of the draw, Sean Fleming had similarly impressed. Having topped his group, the Ballaghaderreen darter had taken a 3-1 last 16 win over Brian McCormack and followed it up with a 3-0 quarter-final win over Jason Owens. A 3-0 win over Mick Egan in the semis then booked Fleming’s final place. The final itself started with Fleming setting the pace with scores of 100 and 139. Hunt was able to match that pace with some excellent scoring throughout the match. How ever, it was Fleming who dug deep and went on to win 3-2 with just one round to go in the Superleague.Thisweek’s Superleague will continue on Friday night with the draw at 8.45 pm and first darts at 9 pm. On the field… After the midseason break, a number of our teams returned to competitive action recently. The boys’ U-16 team lost at home to Glen Celtic. Mike Gillooly scored Roscommon Town’s goal early in the sec ond half. Despite being re duced to ten players, The Town were unfortunate not to get a share of the spoils. The girls were also pipped to the post at home by the same opposition. Rafaella Silva scored a hattrick while Paige Caslin also got on the scoresheet in a high scoring contest. The boys’ U-14 team lost away to Castlerea Celtic with Cian Kiernan and Ryan Han non scoring. Town II were desperately unlucky not to take anything from their tie with Strokestown. Two goals against the run of play put the visitors in front. Andrej Anic steered home a William God frey cross in the second half to get one back but despite numerous efforts on the oppo sition goal, Strokestown clung on to claim the points. This Friday sees the boys’ U-11 EL sides resume their games with Town I at home to Shiven Rovers while Town II are away to Kilkerrin United. Our players and coaches ap preciate the support they re ceive from parents as play resumes after family holidays. Also, assistance with the com petent and continued operation of the club shop on matchdays is much appreciated and adds to the financial and social well being of our club. Every little helps. Local man Noel Gately popped up with a second-half goal for Tremane but it wasn’t enough to deny Oran. While Four Roads and Pádraig Pearses are now safely through to the semi-finals, the quarter-finals will see Athleague fac ing off against parish rivals Tremane in a repeat of last year’s final, while Oran take on St. Dominic’s.
