Dangerous Dogs

My neighbour owns a dog which I believe to be quite vicious. I have spoken with the owner about the fact that it does not wear a muzzle. He assures me that he is a quiet dog but the breed is known to be vicious and I am concerned that it will attack my children. Is my neighbour obliged to put a muzzle on the dog whilst in public?

The Control of Dogs Act 1986 imposes a strict liability for any injury or damage caused by a dog. This means that the owner of a dog shall be liable in damages for damage caused in an attack on any person by the dog and for injury done by it to any livestock. It shall not be necessary for the person seeking such damages to show a previous mischievous propensity in the dog, or the owner’s knowledge of such previous propensity, or to show that such injury or damage was attributable to neglect on the part of the owner.

Dogs must at all times wear a collar that bears the name and the address of the owner inscribed on it or on a plate, badge or disc. Failure to have identification on a dog can result in an on-the-spot fine issued by a dog warden.

Certain breeds of dog, including strains and cross breeds, must be muzzled whenever they are in a public place and must be kept on a short strong lead (under 2 metres) by a person over 16 years who is capable of controlling them. Such breeds include American Pit Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Doberman Pinscher, English Bull Terrier, German Shepherd (Alsatian), Japanese Akita, Japanese Tosa, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Bandog. This also applies to strains or cross-breeds of these breeds.

Failure to keep a dog under control in a public place can result in an on-the-spot fine of €300 paid to your local authority. You can also be prosecuted in the District Court and potentially receive a maximum fine of €2,500 or 3 months’ imprisonment or both.

Lough Funshinagh crisis: Communities beyond breaking point

 EMMETT CORCORAN

The ongoing crisis at Lough Funshinagh in County Roscommon has escalated even further, prompting urgent calls for immediate action as residents face severe disruptions due to rising water levels.

The situation has become critical, with homes evacuated and farmland submerged, as stakeholders press for solutions.

In 2021, Roscommon County Council initiated the installation of a floodrelief pipe to address the frequent flooding at Lough Funshinagh, a turlough known for its fluctuating water levels. However, the project was halted following a successful legal challenge by Friends of the Irish Environment (FEI), citing the EU’s Habitats Directive, which aims to protect natural habitats. The directive was incorporated into Irish law in 1997 by then Labour Party Minister, Michael D Higgins. The recent worsening of conditions has been exacerbated by high winds and rain from Storm Kathleen, leaving approximately 1,300 acres of land underwater, with numerous homes and farms cut off. The increased water levels have led to road closures, adding to the local community’s distress.

Kieran O’Donnell, the Minister of State with re-

sponsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW), visited the area last Friday, after his recent appointment following a cabinet reshuffle.

Minister O’Donnell has stated that the Attorney General is currently reviewing options to complete the flood-relief pipe project in the short-term, expressing his commitment to resolving the crisis urgently.

Local residents and the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) are at breaking point, according to IFA Flooding Project Team chair, Brendan Golden.

During a recent emergency meeting, Mr Golden highlighted that the crisis has reached a “crisis point,” necessitating immediate action to protect the community and their livelihoods. The IFA has also requested a meeting with Minister O’Donnell to discuss further actions to alleviate the flooding, particularly concerning the River Shannon.

Councillor Laurence Fallon (Independent), representing the area, has voiced significant concerns about the expanding impact of the flood, which now threatens additional homes and the main road between Rahara and Curraghboy.

According to Cllr Fallon, the area around Curraghboy lies about one metre lower than the current level

Lough Funshinagh, indicating that the flooding is likely to worsen unless substantial measures are taken.

“The situation on the ground is deteriorating rapidly, and this extended flooding will cause major hardship to yet more farmland. Now we are facing the unacceptable situation where more houses are at risk from flooding,” Cllr Fallon stated. He has called on the government to take decisive action, emphasising the need for immediate water removal and long-term solutions: “The only solution is to remove a significant quantity of water from Lough Funshinagh immediately followed by the rapid implementation of a permanent solution”.

contravening the current injunction, but as was confirmed by Minister of State O’Donnell, the Attorney General is currently looking into how the pipe can be completed to relieve the flooding.

Locally, other councillors have speculated that the deteriorating humanitarian crisis at Lough Funshinagh should sufficiently equip the Government to direct the completion of the works by Roscommon County Council without

As the community braces for ongoing challenges, the call for swift governmental action grows louder, with stakeholders from all sides urging for a resolution that will mitigate the flooding and restore normalcy to the affected regions of County Roscommon.

Victoria wins top prize in Art Competition

17-year-old Roscommon student and artist Victoria Geraghty, from Scoil Mhuire in Strokestown, has won a top prize in this year’s 70th Texaco Children’s Art Competition.

Victoria won a Special Merit Award for her artwork entitled ‘My Granny (A Glow Of Love)’, which Final Adjudicator Gary Granville (Professor Emeritus of Education at the National College of Art and Design) said “demonstrated high levels of skill and imagination”.

No stranger to the competition, Victoria previously won third prize in the 12-13 year age group in 2020.

The Texaco Children’s Art Competition is popularly regarded as the longest-running sponsorship in the history of arts sponsoring in Ireland, with an unbroken history that dates back to the very first competition, held in 1955.

This year, as has been the case throughout its existence, it has been a platform on which young artists from Roscommon and counties throughout Ireland have had their talents recognised and their creativity commended.

Dermot Earley Bursary winners announced

Roscommon County Council is delighted to announce the winners of this year’s prestigious Dermot Earley Bursary named in honour of one of the county’s finest every sportsmen. The awards were presented in the chamber of Aras an Chontae recently.

The initiative, now in its eleventh year, honours outstanding young men and women, not only for their sporting excellence but also for their potential in their chosen field. Each of the recipients receive a bursary of €1,000 each.

The scholarships afford financial assistance to two successful candidates, one male and one female, residing in County Roscommon and attending their first year in Third Level Education following completion of one’s Leaving Cert along with having an accomplished background in sport.

Aisling Hanly from Kilteevan is this year’s female award recipient. The 19-year-old achieved an excellent Leaving Cert result last year. She is now in her first year studying PE and Biology in DCU (Dublin City University). Aisling’s main sport is Gaelic football. She was the captain of the Roscommon Convent of Mercy team that won the All-Ireland B title last year. Her club is Kilbride, who are multiple county title winners.

Aisling is also a member of the current Roscommon adult team who have just secured promotion to Division 2 of the National Football League for 2025. She has also featured on the DCU first team who won the third-level O’Connor Cup recently, the highest grade of football for third-level colleges. Her ambition is to win an All-Ireland Intermediate title with Roscommon in the foreseeable future.

18-year-old Cormac Rynn from Derreenavoggy near Arigna is this year’s male award recipient. He is creating history this year as the first non-GAA recipient of the Dermot Early Award since their inception.

Cormac is currently attending University of Limerick (UL) where he is

studying Biological and Chemical Sciences.

Cormac is a member of the Trident Swim club in Carrick and is the current Connacht champion in a number of events, having medalled at national level on multiple occasions. His immediate aim is to make the national Swim team and ultimately the Irish 2028 Olympic team.

Roscommon County Council established an annual sports bursary in honour of the late Dermot Earley in 2011. The former county footballer from Gortaganny is renowned as one of the county’s greatest ever footballers and was Chief of Staff of the Irish Defence Forces from 2007 until 2010, prior to his untimely death in June of that year.

This year’s award winners were commended for their successes by the LeasCathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council Cllr John Cummins and by the Chief Executive, Shane Tiernan. Both acknowledged the achievements of Aisling and Cormac and wished both recipients every success in their respective disciplines.

THE RENOWNED

SYSTEM 10

WEIGHT

LOSS PLAN RETURNS TO ROSCOMMON LOSE UP TO 2 STONE IN 10 WEEKS

The TRUTH is there are 3 keys to a genuine weight loss (real fat loss) plan - diet, exercise and metabolism correction. All 3 keys interconnect, one will not work without the other. Your metabolism is the most powerful of all the 3 keys. It is the ‘switch’ that controls everything else. In most people this ‘switch’ is off. Metabolism problems like Slow Thyroid, Type 2 Diabetes, Sluggish Liver, Hormone Imbalances, PCOS, Endometriosis, Infertility and Digestive Problems like Constipation, IBS and Diverticulitis will limit or stop your weight loss, no matter how much dieting or exercise you do .

Work on fixing your metabolism problems for amazing results. Combine this with a reasonable diet and exercise and you will get the best, the fastest and the easiest weight loss ever.

THE SYSTEM 10 PLAN INCLUDES:

• An analysis of your metabolism

• Nutritionist designed highly balanced food plans of normal, natural foods, no pills, bars or shakes.

• An exercise plan (home - walk, jog or bike) or gym plan including toning.

• Nutritional supplement recommendations to rapidly repair your system.

• Private weigh-ins, motivational tips and support throughout the programme.

• We can guarantee that every pound you lose is a pound of fat (you don’t lose water or muscle like most plans). You will lose 2-3lbs every week and because our programme is designed to speed up your metabolism, you will keep the weight off when you finish your plan. Programmes available for men and women.

Roscommon school praised for national debating performance

A Roscommon school debating team was praised for their recent performance in the semi-final of the all-island Concern Debates contest. The semi-final took place at the Camden Court Hotel on Camden Street Lower in Dublin city on Thursday, April 11th

The Summerhill-based Coláiste Chiaráin team were applauded for making it to the last four out of the 177 participating teams. The debating team – Keela Plunket, Antoni Wawrzyniak, Éle McCarthy, Aimee Plunkett, mentored and guided by Joseph Cogavin – were impressive runners-up in their debate against Ursuline Secondary School, from Thurles, Tipperary. They were proposing the motion that ‘The current aid system is ineffective. It’s time to shift the power’ and they were

congratulated for their efforts and achievements.

“The future is in excellent hands with these young debaters,” said Concern’s Head of Active Citizenship, Lauren Wright. “We are very proud of all them and applaud their efforts.

FÓGRA D’IARRTHÓIRÍ IONCHASACHA - GRIANGHRAIF AR PHÁIPÉIR BHALLÓIDE

Moltar d’iarrthóirí Toghcháin Áitiúla, i gcás inar mian le hiarrthóir a ghrianghraf nó a grianghraf a chur san áireamh ar pháipéir bhallóide, gurb iad seo a leanas na riachtanais shonracha:

• Seachadfar grianghraf, maille leis an bpáipéar ainmniúcháin, ar an gceann comhairimh i bhformáid dhigitithe (Jpeg) mar aon le dhá chóip chlóite chomhionanna (méid an phas - 35mm x 45mm)

• Ní mór don ghrianghraf a bheith ar chaighdeán maith agus daite agus aghaidh iomlán, ceann agus guaillí an iarrthóra a thaispeáint, ar chúlra éadrom (aon dath) agus ar chaighdeán gairmiúil.

• Ní mór an grianghraf a thógáil tráth nach déanaí ná 12 mhí roimh lá na vótála.

• Ní mór ainm an iarrthóra a bheith ar taispeáint go soiléir ar chúl gach cóipe den ghrianghraf clóite. Mura gcomhlíonann na cóipeanna a thabharfar ar aird (digiteach agus páipéar) na ceanglais thuas, ní fhéadfaidh an ceann comhairimh grianghraf an iarrthóra a chur ar an bpáipéar ballóide. Mura gcuirtear grianghraf ar fáil, fágfar spás bán ar an bpáipéar ballóide le haghaidh ghrianghraf an iarrthóra. Moltar d’iarrthóirí Toghcháin Áitiúla smaoineamh ar a ngrianghraf a fháil lena n-áireamh ar pháipéir bhallóide a luaithe is féidir chun a chinntiú go mbeidh dóthain ama acu chun taisceadh le páipéar ainmniúcháin. Caitlín Conneely, Ceann Comhairimh

Táthar ar tí toghchán a reáchtáil chun comhaltaí do gach aon cheann de thoghlimistéir áitiúla a thoghadh don údarás áitiúil atá luaite thuas.

Is féidir páipéir ainmniúcháin a fháil ón seoladh thíos le linn gnáthuaire oi ge.

Féadfaidh duine é féin nó í féin a ainmniú mar iarrthóir i dtoghchán nó féadfaidh duine eile (is duine atá cláraithe mar thoghthóir rialtais aitiúil i limistéar an údaráis áitiúil a bhfuil sé beartaithe ag an duine an t-iarrthóir a ainmniú dó), mar mholtóir, é nó í a ainmniú, lena thoiliú nó lena toiliú i scríbhinn.

Ní mór deimhniú cleamhnachta polaitíochta a bheith ag gabháil le páipéar ainmniúcháin ó iarrthóir páirtí polaitíochta cláraithe agus caithfear é a thabhairt ar aird domsa lena fhoirm/lena foirm ainmniúcháin chomhlánaithe.

Mura mbeidh aon deimhniú tugtha ar aird ní mór don iarrthóir, roimh an am is déanaí chun ainmniúcháin a fháil, ceachtar den dá rud seo a dhéanamh –

• cúig aontú dhéag leis an ainmniúchán a fháil trí dhearbhuithe reachtúla ó thoghthóirí rialtais áitiúil a bheidh cláraithe sa toghlimistéar áitiúil ábhartha (tá na foirmeacha ar fáil uaimse nó ón údarás cláraithe), nó

• éarlais de €100 a íoc (is féidir éarlais a íoc thar ceann an iarrthóra freisin).

Is é 12 meánlae an 18ú lá de Bealtaine, 2024 an t-am is déanaí le hainmniúcháin a ghlacadh.

Is féidir leis an iarrthóir nó lena mholtóir/a moltóir páipéir ainmniúcháin chomhlánaithe a sheachadadh chugam i bpearsa tráth ar bith a bhím i m’oi g, ó 10am an 11ú lá de Bealtaine 2024 go 12 meánlae ar an lá is déanaí le hainmniúcháin a ghlacadh.

Tá ceangal orm faoin dlí a bheith i láthair le glacadh le hainmniúcháin idir 10am agus 12 meán lae agus idir 2pm agus 5pm an 17 ú lá de Bealtaine agus idir 10am agus 12 meán lae an 18ú lá de Bealtaine 2024.

Má bhíonn toghachán comhraic ann, reáchtálfar vótaíocht an 7ú lá de Meitheamh idir 7am agus 10pm.

FRANK BRANDON

FRANK BRANDON’S unique take on life ...

Winds of change for the Church

Our columnist Frank Brandon weighs in on downsizing dioceses, Knock pilgrimages, the benefits (and anxieties) of travelling by rail, and much more!

It’s another horrible wet Monday morning as I write, and after a night of incessant rain and wind, we woke up in a house that had no electricity or phone service.

Once again, the very small investment I made in two little camping gas cookers a little while ago paid off, so we could at least boil the kettle and have a couple of boiled

eggs for breakfast.

As it happens, I was off to St James’ Hospital in Dublin for the half-yearly check-up on my old ticker, so I am writing this on the train into the city, where I am thinking (unusually I will admit) about the Catholic religion.

Last week, in what has been described as the most radical change in Catholic Church history in 900 years, two small Connacht dioceses, Achonry and Killala, were effectively downsized, losing their own bishops and being amalgamated with Elphin and Tuam respectively. Achonry, with a Catholic population of 37,000 people, and Killala, with 36,000 catholics, are among the smallest dioceses in Ireland, and with less

bishops and priests to go around it apparently makes sense to spread the resources wider.

The archbishop of Tuam, Francis Duffy, said the restructuring was a sign of the times, and that it was all about pooling their resources and giving the best service that they can. How it will affect the ordinary west-of-Ireland churchgoer I have no idea, but I suppose if the top brass in the church all the way up to Pope Francis think it has to be done, then who am I to object?

Funnily enough, as all this was happening in the world of Catholicism, on Sunday a number of us headed for Knock to embark on what has become a regular visit for us.

Now just like this morning (and

Train of thought on pre-booking seats and free travel

It’s now after half past two, and I have got through my NCT quicker than usual and taken a seat on the Dublin-Westport train. I have my ticket but I don’t have a seat booked, and so I am waiting with a fair amount of trepidation to see if someone comes along to turf me out of the seat, which they might have already pre-booked.

There are no names displayed over any of the seats, but beside me there is a fellow asking a couple of passengers to move as he claims they are in his seats, and I am terrified the same fate will happen me. The train is due to leave in less than two minutes so surely the names of those who have booked seats should be up. Farther down I hear another discussion about people being in pre-booked seats, but thankfully

no one has come near me, and as I can hear the engine revving up, it seems I might actually be in luck. Now we are on our merry way, and if there is any advantage to being a senior citizen (I prefer old age pensioner, but it’s not politically correct any more), it is the free travel that comes with it. The much-maligned Charlie Haughey, who also backed Monsignor Horan’s vision of an airport in the wilds of Mayo, was the man who introduced free travel for the elderly way back in 1967, and whatever else he may have done, the old folk of Ireland will be eternally grateful for that measure. I drove to Athlone this morning, got the 10.30 am train to Heuston Station, walked about twenty yards across the road, hopped on the Luas and walked in the door

of James’ Hospital at just after 12 midday. The only money that I parted with was the €4.50 parking fee at Athlone Railway Station, and even if I had to pay for it, the peace and ease of the train journey would be well worth it.

My daughter and her husband and two children used to live in Dublin until recently, and on the occasions that we would drive up to see them, I would nearly need to psyche myself up for a week beforehand, so stressful would I find the city traffic. Today I was so relaxed that I have written most of this week’s piece on the journey, with the only inconvenience being trying to write it on my phone, on a fairly bouncy table.

However, I am thoroughly enjoying the trip, and all I can

nearly every morning), it was very windy and wet, and for a little while we wondered about going at all. However, we are made of hardy stuff, and because we all hate being stuck in the house all day, we loaded up the jackets and coats and made it to Knock in the early afternoon. Of course it decided to really let the rain down just as we arrived, but surprisingly, our prediction that there would be very few visitors there due to the terrible weather was way off the mark – the village was packed! Maybe the number of practicing Catholics has diminished by quite a bit, but devotion to Our Blessed Lady seems to be as strong as ever. Anyway, we did a slightly shorter

say is fair play to the late Charlie Haughey. I once had the pleasure of meeting him, but as it was a very long time ago, free travel was the last thing on my mind, and so instead of thanking him in advance I gave out to him for introducing us to his ‘hairshirt’ treatment back in the 1980s.

If I could meet Charlie now I would forgive him for his excesses, including his famous Charvet shirts, his many tax-free accounts in the Caymen Islands, his embezzlement of party funds, among other things, and I would congratulate him on his foresight in backing Monsignor Horan and turning Ireland West Airport into one of our great success stories, and for making life a lot easier for us old folk. All is forgiven, Charlie.

run around the churches than normal, paid our usual visit to the shops, where the array of souvenirs is just amazing, and then adjourned to the lovely Knock House Hotel for a bite of delicious Sunday lunch and a chat with a number of our family members. I have to say that the number of pilgrims checking in to the hotel was very impressive, and we met people from all over the country, some from as far away as Belfast, and a couple from down the road in Glinsk.

As always, I love the sense of peace and tranquillity that Knock gives, but I do hope that when it comes to the weather, that God has a look at it, and maybe eases up on what seems to be permanent bad weather down there!

Turbine use… gone with the wind?

I am still on the train home (as I write), and as I look out the window (somewhere the Clara side of Portarlington), I see 12 huge wind turbines. But what surprises me is that not even one of them is moving.

Now I’m no expert on such things, but I do know that they cost huge money to put up, and I imagine they only make money for their owners if they are spinning around. Sometimes one might be stuck in gear, but when I see all 12 of them motionless on a nice windy day, it suggests something is wrong!

And finally…

Up in Cavan at the weekend, our daughter Tara had a tremendous victory in a Balmoral qualifier for Amateur Riders. She finished in first place out of a field of 121 riders, and in doing so qualified for the hugely prestigious Balmoral Show in Northern Ireland, which takes place from the 15th to the 18th of May.

Balmoral is almost as big a show as Dublin’s RDS and to qualify for it is a huge achievement for any rider, so well done Tara – we all look forward to heading north to support you next month!

€260,000 for local monuments

Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan TD, has announced that over €7.4 million will be awarded to 140 projects around the country through the 2024 Community Monuments Fund to help owners and custodians of archaeological monuments and safeguard them into the future. Four projects in Roscommon are set to receive €260,000 (in total).

Local projects awarded funding this year include: Clonshanville Abbey (€100,000), Ballintubber Castle (€100,000), Kilronan Church (€30,000), and Kiltullagh Church (€30,000).

Fine Gael TD Frank Feighan has welcomed the allocation of money towards Sligo, Leitrim, and Roscommon projects.

Prolonged power outages in Rooskey spark calls for stricter forestry management

Recent power outages in and around Rooskey village have brought to light ongoing issues with local forestry management, sparking widespread frustration among residents.

The situation, which has left numerous homes and businesses without electricity regularly over recent months, was a focal point during a recent public meeting attended by over 100 residents.

According to meeting organisers: “... recurring outages have worsened in recent years, and particularly in recent months, affecting parts of the village of Rooskey, including nine housing estates, as well as rural areas such as Knockhall, Slatta, Kilglass, and surrounding communities”.

Sinn Féin local election candidate for the Boyle LEA, Rory Williams Doyle, emphasised the need for stricter enforce-

ment of forestry corridors near power lines. This call to action comes in response to recurring power disruptions that have significantly impacted the community, including one incident where a resident reported thousands of euro in damage due to electrical surges.

“Given further outages today (Monday), which I know has seriously impacted upon the people of Rooskey, this situation must urgently be addressed. This is meant to be 21st century Ireland,” stated Williams Doyle. The meeting highlighted issues with private foresters allegedly not maintaining the required 20-metre setback from power lines, a regulation enforced since the Planning and Development Regulations of 2008.

Meanwhile, Councillor Tom Crosby, who has been actively involved in addressing the community’s concerns, relayed updates from the Electricity Supply

Board (ESB). Following severe weather conditions, fallen trees in the Lavagh forestry significantly disrupted power, affecting around 50 customers. Efforts are underway to clear the forestry and prevent future incidents, with ESB Area Manager for Athlone and Longford, Pat Nugent, affirming their commitment to remedial actions.

The ESB has scheduled meetings with forestry owners to formulate a plan to address the recurring issues. These meetings aim to enhance collaboration between the ESB, local authorities, and forestry owners to mitigate the risks associated with poorly maintained tree lines near power infrastructure. According to the reply received by Cllr Crosby from ESB Networks, the matter: “... has been escalated to Managing Director of ESB Networks – Nicholas Tarrant”. Lough

In response to the public outcry, Williams Doyle is advocating for increased resources and personnel to monitor and enforce forestry regulations effectively.

“More inspectors need to be put on the ground to ensure that private foresters are adhering to the terms of the forestry licenses and keeping the required 20-metre setbacks,” he said.

The power outages, notably severe over the Easter

Bank Holiday weekend and following Storm Kathleen, have underscored the need for a more robust approach to managing the interaction between natural landscapes and essential infrastructure.

The local community, supported by elected representatives, is calling for immediate and decisive actions to prevent further disruptions and ensure a stable power supply for Rooskey and its surrounding areas.

Responding to Deputy Claire Kerrane in the Dáil this week regarding Lough Funshinagh, the Taoiseach advised that he intends to visit the area and has asked the Attorney General to prioritise advice on taking emergency action, saying that as soon as he has it, he will reach out to elected representatives.

Raising the issue with the Taoiseach in the Dáil this week, Deputy Kerrane said, “The situation at Lough Funshinagh is wors-

ening hour by hour with water continually rising – and the rain keeps coming.

“As I stand here today, a fifth home is now likely to be evacuated. Water is now rapidly flowing towards Curraghboy village, extending this crisis even further. An overflow pipe, as a temporary and emergency measure is 60% completed and stalled.

“I know having met the new Minister for the OPW Kieran O’Donnell in Roscommon last

Friday, along with other Oireachtas members, local councillors, and families from the community, as well as speaking to him yesterday, that advice is awaited now from the Attorney General. We need this advice now.

“People and families have had been forced to abandon their home and livelihoods have been destroyed. We need the advice to allow the emergency action now”, she concluded.

Hot meals for 18 more schools locally – Dolan

Senator Aisling Dolan has welcomed the announcement this week from An Taoiseach Simon Harris and Minister Heather Humphreys that 900 more schools are now taking part in the hot school meals programme, which will benefit more than 150,000 children.

This investment through the Department of Social Protection means hot school meals are being made available to eighteen more primary schools in County Roscommon. Ms Dolan, Fine Gael Seanad spokesperson on Education, stated “I’ve spoken to principals recently who highlighted the incredible impact of hot school meals for their school and how this has been a major transformation in the day to day lives of school children in Ireland. This landmark investment really shows government’s central focus on children’s wellbeing.

“Now, with this news, more children and families in County Roscommon will have hot school meals available in their school. Parents won’t have the additional morning task of preparing lunches and know that their children will have a good nutritious meal during the day. And it also helps children focus more in school”.

Primary schools not currently availing of funding for hot school meals will now be able to express their interest in participating in the programme from September on.

The Roscommon primary schools that have been included in the recent expansion of the programme are as follows: SN Michil Naofa, SN Cill Ronain, Lismoil NS, Mount Talbot NS, Athleague NS, Brideswell NS, Scoil Mhuire, Camcloon NS, Clooncagh NS, Clonown NS, SN Rath Aradh, St Mary’s Primary, SN O Dubhlain, SN Cluain Na Cille, SN Cnoc An Chrocaire, Ballintleva NS, Roxboro NS, and St Cóman’s Wood Primary School.

Callaghan says funding will make Cloonshanville bell tower safe

Cllr Liam Callaghan has welcomed the recent allocation of €100,000, announced under the Community Monument Fund, to make the old bell tower at Cloonshanville Cemetery safe again.

The graveyard was closed by Roscommon County Council in 2022 due to safety concerns, but following a meeting with the local committee and public representatives, a more reduced area was cordoned off. Now, the recently-allocated funding will be able help preserve the historical building, which dates all the way back to the 13th century.

Cllr Callaghan said he is delighted with the funding, and noted this announcement comes following a previous allocation from last year to allow consultants carry out a study on the Belfry.

“I want to thank the Heritage Officier Nollaig Feeney, Roscommon County Council, and the Local Cemetery Committee for their contribution to this matter”, said Cllr Calllaghan, adding: “and I want to give a special mention to the late John Connor, who highlighted the historical importance of Cloonshanville for many years”.

Local service providers who can help with caring for the elderly

As we and the loved ones in our lives get older, our needs and responsibilities begin to change. While this can be a challenging change to navigate for many, it is also one which can be aided massively by utilising the wealth of community resources and support services available locally.

Fortunately, for those living in Roscommon, it is easier than ever to find out what services are being offered by availing of the Roscommon People business directory, lookitup.ie.

With over 100 local listings, lookitup.ie is a valuable resource for anyone looking to know what businesses exist in their area and information about them – including resources and supports for older people and caregivers. By navigating through lookitup. ie, you are also assured that the service you find is a lo-

cal one, one that is trusted by and established within your community, which is of course so important in terms of who you choose to provide care for you or your loved ones.

Below is a list of some of the local services and community resources aimed at supporting older people and caregivers in Roscommon. For more information/contact details for different services, etc, visit lookitup.ie.

Nursing homes

Local nursing homes provide essential care and support for the elderly, offering specialised services and a sense of community. Nursing homes allow residents to benefit from personalised attention and companionship in a safe and comfortable environment, and there are several

Private Nursing and Retirement Home

operating locally to a very high standard.

Home modification and safety services

It is important that in tandem with growing older, our homes are properly modified and equipped to aid us with the differences and challenges that age brings. For some, they may require a chair lift or bathroom modifications, others may need wheelchair accessibility, etc.

For those continuing to live at home, this means availing of home modification and safety services, which many reputable businesses provide locally.

Cleaning services

For some people in their older age still living at home, there may be some domestic cleaning and tidying that they are no longer able to get to but are of course still necessary to be done.

In cases where it is not possible for these responsibilities to be done by the likes of family members, using a local cleaning service can be the perfect solution to ensure that the home remains clean and safe for the elderly individual.

Healthcare providers/ pharmacists

Dealing with health issues is of course one of the more pressing and univer-

sal challenges that comes with older age. Having access to local healthcare providers who ensure an empathetic and professional service every time is therefore so important, and from pharmacies to primary care physicians, there are a wealth of providers to avail of in Roscommon.

Meal/grocery delivery

Both going out to do the weekly shop and cooking every day can become harder and harder things to do as we age, and so for many, the best solution is to begin using some sort of delivery service.

Many local businesses have expanded their cooked meals/grocery delivery services since the pandemic, and opting to use them can help ensure older people are still able to enjoy nutritious meals

without the hassle of shopping/cooking.

While this list represents just some of the local services offering solutions to common issues for older people and their loved ones/caregivers, there are plenty more resources in Roscommon to avail of, from transportation services and legal assistance to support groups and activity centres. Information about such services can be found online at lookitup.ie. Working together to fight loneliness

With support from ALONE (the national charity organisation aiming to highlight and tackle issues facing isolated older people) and Ireland’s Loneliness Taskforce, at the end of 2023 a group of researchers met to establish a network/community of researcher and research users to focus on the issue of loneliness.

Loneliness is a growing worldwide problem felt acutely in Ireland, where levels of loneliness are higher than the EU average. This presents a serious health risk as loneliness is proven to affect physical as well as mental health. This growing need is being met by NGOs while we campaign for more research and coordinated action.

This new network will act as a place to bring together the latest knowledge on loneliness, share best practice, and create evidence-based policy recommendations for government.

Dr Joanna McHugh Power (Chairperson of the network) said, “We are delighted to take the next step and launch the network at a time when Ireland needs to know more to solve what is the problem of loneliness”.

Seán Moynihan (ALONE, CEO) said, “ALONE as an organisation has been dealing with loneliness for over forty years now. We have many successful interventions with our Support and Befriending volunteers across the country. Unfortunately though, we are seeing the issue continue to grow so we welcome this first step and ask for the Government to work with us to develop a national plan aimed at addressing loneliness across the life course, taking into consideration the need for a ‘whole-of-government’ approach”.

There was a huge response, with more than 100 people registered to attend the launch event on the 16th of April, marking the next chapter of loneliness research in Ireland. Attendees from across Ireland – made up of researchers, service providers, health and care professionals, housing coordinators, members of the public, and charity staff –came together to discuss loneliness research in Ireland. The event included inputs from ALONE’s CEO, Seán Moynihan, an overview of loneliness research from Professor Brian Lawlor, insights from ongoing research on loneliness from Dr Anne-Marie Creaven and Emma Kirwan, University of Limerick, and a look at the UK’s experience of tacking this issue from Assoc. Prof. David McDaid, London School of Economics. The event concluded with round table discussions to develop research priorities on loneliness.

In setting up this group, ALONE and the Loneliness Taskforce aim to produce evidence-based research proposals for Government and the Dept of Health to ensure we tackle loneliness in Ireland.

Father Eamon Flanagan: a portrait of poetry and purpose

A LIFE IN VERSE AND VIRTUE

Fr Eamon Flanagan, a Venetian priest living in Phibsborough, Dublin, presents a unique literary journey in his latest book, ‘Memory Near and Far’ Speaking to the Roscommon People, Fr Flanagan shared his thoughts on life, the church, society and family. The publication is his 14th book.

Born and raised near Boyle, on the Sligo side of the Roscommon-Sligo border, Fr Flanagan’s roots run deep into the heart of rural Ireland, influencing his life and works profoundly. His newest publication stands out by weaving “more biographical elements” into its fabric than his previous collections, offering insights into his multifaceted life through scriptural reflections, historical events, and community values.

A connection forged through poetry

‘Memory Near and Far’ bridges Fr Flanagan’s life experiences with his deep connection to Roscommon, especially evident in the poem ‘Roscommon’s Basilica’. This piece highlights the ancient monastery founded in the mid-400s by St Patrick.

Speaking with Fr Flanagan, his love of Rural Ireland, heritage and world history were evident. He explained that the “Baslic” located in North Roscommon, was inspired by the glorious basilicas of Europe at the time.

According to Fr Flanagan, his journey to find the ancient monastic site was met with the usual warm-heartedness of rural life: “Part of the wall of the monastery can be seen today. Originally founded by St Patrick the site would later have been taken over by the Dominicans which wouldn’t have been unusual of developments over those years”.

Early life and inspirations

Fr Flanagan’s formative years, spent as a boarder at St Nathy’s in Ballaghaderreen, laid the groundwork for his profound engagement with literature and religion.

His time in Ballaghaderreen and subsequent studies in Classics at University College Dublin shaped his intellectual and spiritual pursuits, leading him to ordination and a diverse career in education and pastoral care across Ireland and beyond.

With a notable fondness in his voice, Fr Flanagan recalled playing league football within St Nathy’s College: “I graduated from St Nathy’s in 1956, and if I’m not mistaken, they won the Hogan Cup the following year. I loved sports but I had committed more of my

time to my studies at that time”.

The Northern Ireland experience

Serving in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, Fr Flanagan’s commitment to peace and civil rights came to the fore.

Despite the challenges of violence and political turmoil, he remained dedicated to the Corporal Works of Mercy, visiting the imprisoned and supporting communities in distress.

While alien to my generation, Fr Flanagan spoke with great care of how dai-

Eddi Reader and The Alan Kelly Gang confirmed for Boyle Arts Festival 2024

Scotland’s internationally acclaimed and mesmerising songstress, Eddi Reader, has just been added as one of the headline artists for the 2024 Boyle Arts Festival. Eddi will be joined by the Alan Kelly Gang for what promises to be an unforgettable concert in St Joseph’s Hall on Saturday, July 27th. Tickets are now on sale and are available on www.citizenticket.com

Scottish singer Eddi Reader, of Fair-

ground Attraction fame, teams up with Ireland’s own piano accordion maestro, Alan Kelly and his gang of acclaimed musicians featuring Steph Geremia on flute and vocals, John Douglas (Trashcan Sinatras) and Shane McGowan (Sean Keane Band) on guitars with Jim Higgins (Christy Moore, The Stunning) on percussion.

Brimming with powerful instrumentals, alluring songs and buoyant harmonies, this is a wonderful union of

Scottish and Irish tradition from true masters.

Alan joined Eddi’s band in 2003 and since has toured and recorded by her side for the past 20 years.

Mixing the Alan Kelly Gang’s innovative perspective to the Celtic repertoire with Eddi Reader’s thrilling and affecting performance, this show has been praised for leaving audiences spellbound.

ly life went on in what were abnormal time: “I wouldn’t say you ever got used to the bombings and gunfire but you learned to get on with your daily work.

“Pedestrian and vehicular checkpoints were just part of daily life. You would think nothing of being frisked by security forces as you went about your day”.

A passion for sport and community

Fr Flanagan’s love for sports, particularly Gaelic games, underscores his belief in the importance of community and pastoral care.

His involvement in club football in Armagh and later engagements with sports clubs revealed the pastoral side of being part of a team, where he provided support and guidance, enhancing his connection with others.

“I would never have sought to provide pastoral care to teammates or fellow club members but organically you would find yourself being of some help to others. It might only be something very small but it was very rewarding”.

Reflecting on family and social change

In ‘Memory Near and Far,’ Fr Flanagan pays homage to his parents: “I thought very long and hard about it before I put pen to paper. I wanted to honour my parents and show them the respect they deserved.

“Families are the foundation and backbone of society and communities,” explained Fr Flanagan, continuing: “I wanted to remember my parents accurately and without exaggeration but with due reverence to the very important role they played in our family and community”.

In light of the recently defeated referenda, I asked Fr Flanagan about his views on the church’s role in addressing social issues: “I would like to see a more active leadership stance by the church,” he said, while recognising the complexities of modern societal expectations and the limits on the church’s influence.

Conclusion: a legacy of love and literature Fr Flanagan’s latest work is not just a collection of poetry; it’s a mosaic of life, reflecting his journey through historical upheavals, personal trials, and spiritual quests.

Through his vivid portrayal of his parents, his thoughtful engagement with social issues, and his unwavering love for sports and community, Fr Flanagan offers readers a rich tapestry of Irish life, imbued with the wisdom of experience and the beauty of poetic expression.

‘Memory Near and Far’ stands as a testament to a life devoted to faith, literature, and the enduring values of community and peace.

IFA Flooding Project Team meet to set out River Shannon priorities

The IFA Flooding Project Team met recently to agree the priority areas they will focus on for farmers affected by flooding along the River Shannon.

The Project Team will be looking for a meeting with Minister Kieran O’Donnell, who has been given responsibility for OPW in the reshuffle.

“The River Shannon must be maintained properly”, commented Brendan Golden. “Measures must be put in place to help alleviate the flooding problem by allow-

ing the water levels to reduce without unnecessary restriction. It’s affecting farmers, who end up suffering major losses, and it also causes disruption for businesses in the flooded areas.

“We need the relevant bodies to engage with IFA to rectify the problems and guarantee the proper maintenance of the River Shannon into the future”, he concluded.

IFA deem transport scheme for fodder a ‘good step’

Speaking after the recent National Fodder and Food Security Committee meeting, IFA Francie Gorman said the introduction of the transport subsidy scheme to assist farmers who are having difficulty accessing fodder was “a good step”.

Mr Gorman also said the scheme needs to be flexible in terms of the application process and has to allow for the speedy transfer of fodder, and native grain in stores, to where it is needed most.

At the meeting, IFA raised the impor-

Fallon seeks urgent fodder assistance

Cllr Laurence Fallon has called for immediate action to be taken to assist farmers experiencing a fodder shortage due to ongoing wet weather.

“Many farmers are still unable to release their cattle from winter housing due to heavy rains and associated wet ground conditions,” stated Cllr Fallon. “As a result, farmers are facing increased financial pressures as they require additional fodder for livestock.

“The Minister for Agriculture must carry out an immediate assessment to identify fodder shortages and farmers who are facing financial challenges. The current situation is unprecedented and farmers are now weeks behind their usual annual schedule.

“Support must be made available to these farmers now in order to acquire urgently needed feed immediately,” concluded Cllr Fallon.

Born and raised in Kingsland in Boyle, Paul Forde has deep roots in the local community. He attended primary school in Kingsland and later continued his education at St Mary’s, Boyle. For over 30 years, he has worked with An Post and has served as the Postmaster of Boyle’s Post Office for the last eighteen years, where he has played a vital role in fostering community connections and providing essential services to residents.

In addition to his role in the postal service, Forde also runs a small beef farm with his wife Maureen. In a press statement this week, Independent Ireland said

that Mr Forde’s first-hand experience in farming and local business has given him a profound understanding of the challenges facing rural Ireland, including high running costs, over-regulation, and government mismanagement of resources.

Michael Fitzmaurice TD, a prominent figure within Independent Ireland, expressed his support for Forde’s candidacy.

“Paul Forde’s extensive experience in business, farming, and community service make him an exceptional candidate for Independent Ireland,” said Fitzmaurice. “I have no doubt that he will be a strong advocate for rural communities and will work tirelessly to address their needs and am delighted he has joined our growing team that is working

Cairns in Carrick visit

to redress the balance for rural Ireland”.

Party Leader Michael Collins also endorsed Forde’s candidacy, highlighting his commitment to advocating for rural Ireland.

During a visit to Carrick-on-Shannon, Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns expressed her support for local candidate Lola Gonzalez-Farrell and emphasised the party’s commitment to the needs of local rural towns and surrounds in the upcoming local elections. Deputy Cairns stated, “This is a time of growth for the Social Democrats and I am so encouraged to have strong community-driven candidates like Lola standing for the party in June’s local elections. Lola is deeply committed to seeing the kind of change that people around the country are ready for”.

The visit provided an opportunity for Deputy Cairns, Ms Gonzalez-Farrell, and Midlands-North-West MEP candidate Rory Hearne to directly engage with local businesses and residents, listen to their perspectives, and discuss the issues that matter most to the community.

Sean Moylan launches local election campaign in Tulsk

Sean Moylan officially launched his campaign for the upcoming local election in O’Connor’s Bar, Tulsk, on Easter Saturday, March 30th. He is a candidate for Fianna Fáil in the Boyle LEA.

In attendance were current TD and European election candidate Barry Cowen, Senator Eugene Murphy, Joe Murphy (outgoing local councillor), Aidan Sampey and James Murray (both local election candidates), many Fianna Fàil delegates, and supporters.

Mr Moylan spoke about the wider family influence that played into his decision to run for office, citing their long association with the Fianna Fáil party, his ambition for his constituency, and why he felt this was the right time for him to enter politics.

The attendees also heard from Barry Cowen TD about his ambitions for the Midlands-North-West constituency in the European elections, and the importance at this time of bringing mainstream politics back to Europe to help Ireland have more influence.

A great night was had by all, and Sean stated he is very much looking forward to meeting all constituents over the duration of the campaign.

Business

Minister for Tourism Catherine Martin and Fáilte Ireland, in conjunction with Tourism Ireland, have marked the 10th anniversary of the Wild Atlantic Way at Meitheal, the largest and most important trade event for the Irish tourism industry.

The Wild Atlantic Way, the hugely successful tourism brand developed by Fáilte Ireland in response to the global financial crash, was launched to the tourism industry at Meitheal in 2014, and over the last decade has become a globally recognised tourism brand and has provided an economic engine for the west of Ireland.

According to a new report, nearly two million more visitors visited the Wild Atlantic Way in 2023 compared with 2013. Tourism is now worth €3billion per year on the Wild Atlantic Way, an increase of 59% on 2013, and this growth has contributed to the creation of an additional 35,000 jobs, with tour-

ism now supporting 121,000 jobs across the region.

Speaking at Meitheal, Catherine Martin TD (Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media) said, “This year Meitheal is particularly special, as we mark the 10th anniversary of the Wild Atlantic Way.

“Ten years ago, a vision for the future of tourism in Ireland was launched, a route that stretched for 2,500 kilometres along our rugged Atlantic Coast. This is now a household name and cements Ireland’s reputation as a must-visit tourism destination, and I commend Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland on their work in driving this success over the last ten years.

“For a small island, we have a huge amount to offer from world class scenery to hospitality, to activities, attractions, culture, heritage, and food”.

Economic outlook as viewed by Ibec

Ibec, the group that represents Irish business, this week published its new Economic Outlook, which forecasts growth in GDP of 2% in 2024 and 3.4% in 2025. The Outlook says that higher growth in exports, investment and the overall economy is expected for this year and next, on the back of falling inflation, anticipated interest rate reductions and marginal improvements in the global economy.

Commenting on the report, Ibec Head of National Policy and Chief Economist, Gerard Brady, said: “Much of the underperformance in exports and capital investment last year was driven by once-off impacts caused by the timing of big investment decisions and reducing demand for Covid-related products in the BioPharma sector.

“Headline economic figures for last year belie a robust performance on the ground, with 90,000 additional jobs added and a domestic economy that compares favourably with much of Europe. For this year, we expect GDP growth of 2%.

“This will be driven by a marginally

stronger performance in the global economy and an improvement in some sector and product specific sales which had cast a pall over overall exports in 2023. It remains the case, however, that intensified global competition in some sectors and relatively weak growth in key trading partners, particularly in the Eurozone, will mean more subdued export growth than had been the case for much of the past decade.

“Falling inflation and anticipated interest rate cuts this year should provide a boost to the Irish economy. For consumer facing businesses, the fall-off in inflation to 2.3% in 2024, combined with high employment and rising wages, will mean a return to real income growth for households, even though prices facing consumers will remain higher than previous years due to higher global commodity costs.

“Whilst the domestic market remains in a much better position than in much of Europe, there are broader concerns about the strength of the global economy which will weigh on Irish growth in the coming years”.

A bouquet of beautiful memories, sprayed with a million tears, wishing God could have spared you both if just for a few more years.

Lonely is the home without you both, life to us is not the same, all the world would be like Heaven, if we could have you both back again.

Always loved and remembered by Lorraine and Aidan.

Galway up next as minors seek first win

Connacht MFC

Mayo 2-13 Roscommon 2-7

 SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon minor footballers suffered defeat in the first round of the Connacht Championship last Friday night at MacHale Park in Castlebar. Despite being well in the game at half-time, down by only two points, 0-6 to 0-4, the Rossies fell away in the second period as young Mayo star Kobe McDonald took centre stage, scoring 1-5 on the night. Dean Casey scored a fine goal for Roscommon in the second half but Mayo came back strong and scored 1-8 without reply to seize control of the game.

Roscommon’s Eoin Collins did score a fine opportunist goal late on but it was of consolation value only to the young team who now face Galway at Dr Hyde Park this Friday evening in round two.

Best for James Duignan’s Roscommon side on the night were Keelan Kelly, Alan Conroy, Dean Casey and Stephen Tighe.

Roscommon: Patrick Gaynor; Liam Finneran, Gordon Casey, Marcus Connaughton; Alan Conroy (02, 1 f), Keelan Kelly, Colin Murray; Darragh Devaney, Declan Kennedy; Sam Malec Hannon, Eoin Collins (1-0), Cathal Enright; Dara Curran (0-1), Stephen Tighe (0-3), Dean Casey (1-1). Subs: Ciaran Mulry for Enright (42), Joe McKeon for Hannon (44), Conor Kennedy for Casey (54), Michael Brooks for Finneran (60).

U-20s storm into Connacht final

Roscommon U-20s produced their best display of the campaign to hand out a 13-point beating to Leitrim in Ballinamore on Wednesday night.

Two well-taken goals in a four-minute spell helped Noel Dunning’s men to a 2-7 to 1-3 lead at half-time.

With Shane McGinley (who finished with 1-7), Niall O’Donnell and Bobby Nugent outstanding, Roscommon completely dominated the second half and Bobby Nugent put the seal on a famous victory with a great goal in the 50th minute.

The big win for Roscommon means that they have qualified for the Connacht final. They will await the winners of Sligo and Galway in the semi-final after Sligo defeated Mayo by 0-12 to 0-8 in the other game on Wednesday. Final score from Ballinamore: Roscommon 3-16 Leitrim 2-6.

Draw v Galway

On the previous Wednesday (April 10th) Roscommon had drawn their third championship game in a row when they came from two points down to earn a share of the spoils (0-6 apiece) with Galway in a low-scoring game played in very poor conditions at Dr Hyde Park.

Against Galway, Roscommon led by two points early on but in the second quarter their opponents scored three points without reply to lead by one at half-time, 0-3 to 0-2.

Galway were the dominant team for most of the second half and by the 50th minute they led by two, 0-5 to 0-3.

Roscommon were resilient however and points from Shane McGinley and sub Niall O’Donnell levelled the game by the second minute of injury-time, at 0-5 each.

Cian Murphy kicked a Galway point a minute later but Roscommon levelled again at the very end with a converted free by Shane McGinley.

Mullins bids for title

A very successful meeting for WP

Mullins, four Grade 1s and the National, left him leading the British trainers list by £62,609 from Dan Skelton with Paul Nichols another £76,977 back following the £500,000 for the National and now he will have a shot at the title.

Cam Celtic ladies’ league double

The Cam Celtic ladies team secured back-to-back league titles after they defeated Kilkerrin United in a repeat of last season’s play-off for the RDFL Senior Women’s League title last Sunday. Cam were boosted by the return of Roscommon GAA stars Kate Nolan and Aimee O’Connor and the home side started stronger.

With just seven minutes played Rebecca Collins rose highest in a crowded penalty area to head home Aimee O’Connor’s corner.

Cam Celtic were playing with a strong breeze in the opening half and Kilkerrin were defending well until a speculative shot from Marion Nolan on the 20-minute mark was saved by the excellent Kilkerrin goalkeeper. The ever-sharp Karen O’Boyle was quickest to react and she buried the ball to the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Kilkerrin threw everything at the Cam defence

but couldn’t break them down and Cam held on for the win.

Though spoilt somewhat by the showers and the breeze, this was a very entertaining game of football with some great skill shown by both sides.

The large attendance from both clubs was a great advertisement for the growing involvement and interest in women’s soccer.

This was a huge effort by both teams and just reward for Cam Celtic girls, all of whom have worked hard on their game over the past few months.

Congratulations to Cam’s Aisling Byrne who was the worthy winner of the player of the match award.

Next up for the Cam Celtic women is the RDFL Challenge Cup final against Castlerea Celtic on May 5th.

Recently, the Roscommon senior football team trained on the club’s 4G pitch, as have the county hurlers and camogie teams, along with other local club teams.

Davy Burke, the Roscommon senior football manager, spoke of how good the development was and what a huge asset it was to the team being able to play on the 4G pitch when all local GAA pitches were flooded due to the wet weather.

Your support is needed and tickets can be purchased online at www. creggsrugby.ie or by contacting any club member.

Two Buccs teams in cup finals on Sunday

Two Buccaneers teams contest Connacht Cup finals on Sunday when Sligo will be opponents in both deciders at the Dexcom Stadium in Galway in what is an extremely busy weekend for Youths Cup matches.

Buccaneers U-16s kick-off at 1.30 pm when they will be bidding to retain the Enda O’Rourke Memorial Cup while the Buccaneers U-18.5 side will play against a formidable Sligo unit in their cup final at 3.30 pm. There is lots of talent and experience in both Athlone squads and the 4G sur-

face at the Dexcom should suit their preferred style of play.

Buccaneers U-17s: Buccaneers U-17s are also in cup action with their Connacht semi-final away to Corinthians, which was postponed previously due to Corinthian Park being unplayable, being rescheduled for Sunday at 12 pm.

Buccaneers U-13s: Buccaneers U-13s drew away to Gort 7-7 in their Cup semi-final. Scoring was extremely low, mainly due to very challenging pitch conditions.

The Athlone boys will be hopeful that

home advantage for the replay at Dubarry Park on Saturday will help them progress to the final. Kick-off is 1.30 pm.

Buccs U-18.5s: Buccaneers U-18.5s were somewhat fortunate to progress to the Connacht U-18.5 Cup final through Charlie O’Carroll’s penalty with the last kick of a keenly contested tussle which earned his side a 13-13 draw at rainswept Dubarry Park last Thursday night.

Buccs were aware that in the event of the game ending in a draw that they would be awarded the victory due to

Ballina receiving a yellow card while the Pirates had incurred none.

Conditions were truly challenging for the players and Ballina were the better of the two teams in the opening half, scoring a converted try and a penalty to lead 10-3 at the break.

The second half was a tighter affair with Buccs piling on the pressure and it eventually paid off when they went over for a converted try to level at 10-10.

Ballina hit back with a penalty to go ahead by three points again but in the last minute of the game Buccs forced

a penalty in front of the posts to tie the game and due to a Ballina yellow card earlier in the game it meant that Buccs were awarded the win. A cruel way to lose for the visitors.

Buccs will now face Sligo in the Dexcom Stadium on Sunday in a repeat of last season’s final.

‘Give it a Try’ for Girls: ‘Give it a Try’ is a fun introduction to rugby for girls aged 8 to 12 years. It starts at Buccaneers on Monday, April 22nd, and will continue for 8 weeks. Cost is only €10.

Nicky Rackard Cup

Roscommon 1-20 Louth 1-14

< SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon hurling manager Kevin Sammon will hope his team can build on last weekend’s opening round Nicky Rackard Cup win over Louth when they face Monaghan away this Saturday.

Speaking to People Sport, Sammon said: “We’ve spoken about the importance of winning home games, but it’s important to get a win on the road as well. It’s going to be hard going up to Monaghan next week. They’re bringing us a bit further than Clones (Inniskeen), but our aim is to win that match.

“The ambition is to get into the top two and reach the final. Only one team can win it, but it’s not easy to win any competition. Our aim is to win it, all going well”.

As to the victory over Louth, Sammon said: “It’s the first round of the championship, and you want to get a win, especially at home. It was nice to get it.

“We scored 0-15 in the first half, but I think we left some scores behind us. We knew how strong the breeze was, so we probably needed to be at least ten points ahead.

“We ended up nine ahead and, naturally, Louth, with the breeze at their backs, came into it. There was a while in the second half when we didn’t trouble the scoreboard, but once we got used to the wind, we got those scores”.

Roscommon made a winning start to their championship campaign with a comfortable 1-20 to 1-14 victory over Louth in Saturday’s Nicky Rackard Cup opener at Dr Hyde Park.

Playing with the strong wind at their backs in the opening half, Kevin Sammon’s men laid the foundations for victory when they led by 0-15 to 1-3 at the break.

The visitors reduced the gap to five points in the third quarter but Brendan Mulry was Roscommon’s ace in the pack with the impressive Four Roads man scoring 1-4 in the final 15 minute to seal the win.

Manager Kevin Sammon paid tribute to Mulry’s vital contribution in that second half, saying “Brendan is a great man inside, a great target man to have. He got a very similar goal here in the league, an overhead flick. Once that went to the net, it gave the rest of the team a lift as well”.

Roscommon had dominated the exchanges in the first half, and although Conor Murray drilled home a goal for the visitors in the 9th minute in what was a rare attack, Roscommon’s free-taker Paddy Fallon was unerring from the placed ball and the home side built up a handsome nine-point lead by half-time.

Roscommon were well in control at the start of the second half, but the visitors then upped their game with the aid of the wind and by the 51st minute they had reduced the margin to five (0-16 to 1-8).

Roscommon soon regained control. Two fine points from Brendan Mulry steadied the ship and when the Four Roads man flicked home an excellent goal in the 65th minute Roscommon were home and dry. They now take a trip to Monaghan this weekend.

GAA launches Patrons Donation Scheme

Roscommon GAA have successfully applied for planning permission to refurbish Dr Hyde Park.

The work is being completed in stages, with the most prominent element so far being the removal of the concrete seats at the front of the Stand and the installation of new seats, a state-of-the-art wheelchair section and new dugouts.

That work is due to be completed in April and the next phases of work will be to upgrade the dressing rooms and toilet blocks, and install turnstiles.

While the County Board have some funding in place, they are now looking for support from the public to complete the project.

Roscommon GAA are asking each family or friend involved in, or with an affinity to Roscommon GAA, to donate €300 towards the development

project at Dr Hyde Park, as part of a new Patrons Donation Scheme.

The County Board had a number of discussions about the possibility of donating lower amounts, but it was felt that providing only one option was best, considering the scale of what they are trying to achieve.

Under Irish revenue rules, an approved sports body can claim tax relief on donations made in relation to a project approved by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (DTTAS), and in this case the Dr Hyde Park refurbishment is one of the approved projects.

When a PAYE-only taxpayer makes a donation, it is considered to be net of tax. So, if someone pays tax at 40%, the €300 would be 60% of the donation (similarly, if someone pays tax at 20%,

the €300 is considered as 80% of the donation). In both cases, the County Board can claim a refund of tax on the donation directly from the Revenue Commissioners.

In return for their donation, all benefactors will be honoured by having their names inscribed on the prominently displayed patrons’ board at Dr Hyde Park.

An important point to note is that one of the rules of the tax rebate scheme that revenue offers is that no prize incentive can be offered.

It is also important for everyone to understand that this scheme is separate to the day-to-day running costs of the County Board. For more information on how to become a patron please visit gaaroscommon.ie/patrons.

By half-time Roscommon led 0-4 to 0-3 in a game played in very blustery conditions. Laura Glennon was prominent as Roscommon went two clear in the third quarter, but Sligo came back and levelled the game. Then with 10 minutes to go Sligo went ahead with a well-taken goal. Showing great resolve, Roscommon finished the game well, scoring three points on the spin to ensure Albert Looby’s young side took the title in dramatic fashion.

‘This is a huge game’ – Burke

wasn’t our sole focus this year.

Despite holding the reins with Roscommon senior footballers for the second year, one might forget sometimes that Davy Burke is only 36 years of age. He is not much older than a number of players who will play in this year’s All-Ireland senior football championship. However, despite his youth, the Kildare man is an experienced manager with club, college and county, and his enthusiasm and passion for what he does always shines through.

He loves the big occasion and they don’t come much bigger than a home provincial semi-final against your biggest rivals, Mayo. Roscommon may have had a poor league campaign but Davy Burke has already parked that and is now looking forward to the championship, and this game against Mayo in particular.

When we spoke earlier this week Davy first reflected on a chaotic league campaign. “As a group we finally got a chance to breathe after the Derry game. We were obviously very disappointed to get relegated, but the seven games in nine weeks came thick and fast and it was great to have a few days to relax for the whole squad and (to) clear our heads,” he said.

“It was a frustrating league campaign. We certainly didn’t want to be relegated, but look, the league

“Last year we came in and had to hit the ground running and we put a big emphasis on our first couple of games against Tyrone and Armagh. We got points on the board early on and we got the bounce of the ball in terms of luck too. We have not got any luck so far this year at all. Hopefully that will come.

“We were frustrated with some of our performances but I honestly think we are getting better and the first 50 minutes against Derry was the best football we have played this year,” he added.

Burke says that people will see a much better Roscommon team when they have a full squad to choose from. “When we get our best 20 players out on the field it’s a completely different situation. We used 34 players during the league and the reality is that Roscommon simply do not have 34 players capable of playing Division One football,” he said.

So what’s the injury update prior to this big game against Mayo? “Evan Flynn is out for the rest of the season with a serious shoulder injury and Cathal Heneghan won’t be ready for the Mayo match, but we hope to have him for the All-Ireland series. Apart from that we have a clean bill of health. There are a few of the U20s doing well too so it’s good to have an almost full squad to pick from”.

While many people will feel that a loss to Mayo would not be a ma-

Five Rossies on Division Three Team of Year

Five players from the Roscommon senior ladies football team have been named on this year’s Lidl Ladies National Football League Division Three Team of the Year.

The teams of the 2024 Lidl Ladies National Football Leagues, selected by the Ladies Gaelic Football Association’s All-Star committee, were revealed on Monday afternoon and five Roscommon players, Helena Cummins, Ellen Irwin, Rachel Fitzmaurice, Laura Fleming and Aisling Hanly, have all been selected on the Division Three Team of the Year.

Their selection comes on the back of Roscommon’s wonderful performance in this year’s National Football League, finishing top of Division Three and narrowly losing to Clare in the league final.

The selected players will all receive their awards at Croke Park on Friday, May 3rd

jor blow, Burke was emphatic when asked about preparations for the game.

“Oh this is a very important match. There is no point in playing it down. Mayo are massive rivals. This is what I love about doing this job… the build-up to these big games, the atmosphere, and everything else that’s involved. That’s what keeps me happy driving up and down the road every night. I love it I have to say.

“This is a huge game back in Hyde Park. Four or five weeks ago we would have been very disappointed with our second-half showing in MacHale Park (in the league) but let’s see how Sunday goes”.

The Roscommon manager says that Mayo’s game in New York will stand to them. “Mayo have played a championship game and regardless of the quality of the opposition they got a chance to go away for a few days together, which is a bonus for them. As far as I can see they are injury-free too so I am expecting them to come in full force against us”.

He concluded: “Dr Hyde Park has been redeveloped and fair play to the County Board on having the new stand ready for the game… there will be a massive crowd and a great atmosphere. I have to say I can’t wait for it. We will give it everything and we know how much Roscommon people love to beat Mayo and we will be trying everything we can to achieve that on Sunday”.

Huge interest as heavyweights Derry and Donegal meet

Championship Watch

To date, the provincial football championships have been a damp squib to say the least, so hopefully this weekend there will be more excitement than we have had thus far.

The biggest game of the championship so far will take place in Celtic Park in Derry on Saturday when Donegal are the visitors.

The return of Jimmy McGuinness has energised Donegal and they will relish the challenge of playing league champions Derry on the home patch.

There will be a serious atmosphere and it promises to be a very tight game. There will also be a huge TV audience for this one. I fancy Derry to win by three or four points. On Sunday, Cavan take on Tyrone, and with home advantage, Cavan will fancy their chances of causing another upset after beating Mona-

ghan. However, if Tyrone have the Canavans fit they should be good enough to squeeze

to it but to be brutally honest if Kerry don’t win easily it will constitute a major shock. Clare should be too good for Waterford in the other Munster semi-final.

Probably the biggest excitement this weekend in the GAA will be the return of the senior hurling championship.

The clash of Limerick and Clare in Ennis on Sunday has all the ingredients of a cracker. Clare will fancy their chances at home and don’t be surprised if they turn over John Kiely’s men.

Waterford play Cork in Walsh Park and that looks like a Cork win as Waterford have been struggling. In Leinster, Galway will probably shoot the lights out against Carlow and Wexford should be too good for Dublin, while Kilkenny will have an easy outing against Antrim. There is plenty of action in the Christy Ring, Nicky Rackard and Lory Meagher Cups this weekend too.

Roscommon ready for daunting Mayo date

Connacht SFC semi-final

Roscommon v Mayo in Dr Hyde Park on Sunday at 4 pm

Despite the fact that the provincial championships are now a sideshow in terms of the race for Sam Maguire (and the Tailteann Cup), any time Roscommon and Mayo meet, regardless of the competition, it is an occasion to savour.

Roscommon have won twice in Castlebar in the championship in recent years but it is 23 years ago since the home side beat their great rivals at Dr Hyde Park in Connacht. Bridging that gap would bring great satisfaction to Roscommon players and followers alike.

From a Mayo perspective, the defeat they suffered in Castlebar in 2023 still hurts, and they will want revenge for that loss this weekend. Kevin McStay knows that a provincial title would mean a slightly easier programme of fixtures in the round robin series later on in the championship, and he will be fielding a very strong team on Sunday.

Following a poor league campaign, Davy Burke will be anxious to put that disappointment behind Roscommon, so a win against Mayo would be the perfect tonic.

I believe Roscommon will line-out as expected. Conor Carroll will be between the posts. Brian Stack, Davy Murray, Eoin McCormack and Niall

Daly look certainties in defence, with Niall Higgins, Conor Hussey and Paddy Gavin are others in line for a start in the rearguard.

Midfield is a conundrum for Roscommon. If Ultan Harney is fit then he starts. The same would apply to Keith Doyle, but he may he kept in reserve after coming back from injury. Enda Smith would also be in line for a midfield berth.

Up front, Diarmuid Murtagh, Donie Smith, Daire Cregg, Ruaidhri Fallon and Ronan Daly look certain starters, with Dylan Ruane, Conor Cox,

James Fitzpatrick and Ciaran Lennon also in with a chance of starting. A clue to the Mayo line-up came in The Bronx two weeks ago when they easily defeated New York in the quarter-final.

In defence, Rory Brickendon, Jack Coyne and the impressive Sam Callinan are the men in possession of the jerseys, and they look certain to start. Team captain Paddy Durcan, Stephen Coen and Eoghan McLoughlin also look certain to line up in what is an impressive Mayo half-back line. At midfield, former full-back Da-

vid McBrien and Matthew Ruane look the likely partnership, while up front Fergal Boland has been very impressive since his return to the team. The Mayo talisman in attack is now Ryan O’Donoghue. Aidan O’Shea is still a very effective performer, while Tommy Conroy and Jack Carney have also been prominent for Mayo in recent months. Mayo have Cillian O’Connor, Darren McHale, Enda Hession and Padraig O’Hora (to name just a few) to call on from the bench so it looks a strong outfit.

Mayo will try to impose their style on proceedings and will hope to win the midfield battle, but Roscommon are in this game with a real chance if they go about their business in the right way. If they can hold the Mayo attack then a home win can be on the cards.

I just hope that Roscommon are not as conservative in their style of play as they were for many of their league games. They have a number of very talented attackers who can score, and the team will have to get the ball into those players quicker and more directly than we have seen so far this year.

At a newly-refurbished Dr Hyde Park, there could be 20,000 people present on Sunday to see the latest clash of the rivals. It would be fantastic to see another Roscommon win, but Mayo look to have a stronger panel overall. They were slightly more convincing in the league and have the benefit of a championship game under their belts already. I think the visitors will win it by two or three points. Prediction: Mayo.

Roscommon v Mayo: Did You Know?

• The teams meet in the Connacht Championship for a second successive year, with Roscommon having won the 2023 quarter-final by four points. Mayo beat Roscommon by six points in Division One this year.

• Mayo are having their second outing in the 2024 Connacht Championship, having beaten New York by 15 points in the quarter-final (2-21 to 2-6). They finished fourth in Division One, winning four games and losing three.

• This is Roscommon’s first outing in the 2024 Championship. They were relegated from Division One, having finished seventh in the table after winning one, drawing one and losing five games.

• Mayo last reached the Connacht final in 2021; Roscommon were last there in 2022.
