I can’t believe you’re STILL having strange, crazy ‘Covid dreams’…

Only when I’m asleep!

Yeah, obviously! But not every night?

Not every night. I thought they’d stopped…

In parallel with restrictions being eased?

Huh? The extent to which your dreams had become more bizarre was beginning to recede relative to the easing of restrictions?

CAN YOU REPEAT THAT? Probably not, it was a once-off verbal flourish!

Working from Home and Tax Relief

I have worked from home on a full-time basis since March of last year. A friend told me that I might qualify for some tax relief because I work from home. Is this correct?

Many people continue to work from home because of the COVID-19 situation. If you work from home for substantial periods of time on a fulltime or part-time basis then you may be able to claim tax relief against the cost of some home expenses such as electricity, heat and broadbands.

In order to qualify for tax relief, you must work from home for substantial periods of time on a full-time or part-time basis. You are not entitled to claim tax relief if you bring work home from the office outside of normal working hours, for example in the evenings or at weekends.

Your employer is not legally obliged to make a contribution to you in respect of additional electricity, heating or broadband costs incurred.

However, if they choose to do so you may receive up to €3.20 per day from your employer without having to paying any tax, PRSI or USC on it. If your employer pays more than €3.20 per day to cover these expenses, you pay tax, PRSI and USC as normal on the amount above €3.20.

If your employer does not pay you an allowance for your expenses, you may claim for tax relief at the end of the year from Revenue. Your tax refund will be based on the number of days you worked from home and your electricity, heating and broadband costs. Revenue currently applies a tax relief rate for the cost of running a home office at 10% of the total cost. Therefore, you may apply 10% of the cost of your electricity, heating and broadband costs against your taxes. Keeping copies of utility bills will be important to substantiate your claim.

Of course! It was Boris! BORIS JOHNSON! REALLY? Yes, really! Then his friends began to appear. Well, he called them his friends, but I think they all had the hump with him.

He was very charming.

They had a beach party! Boris was exclaiming how delighted he was to welcome his “friends and partners”…

Very dramatically! A huge, black vehicle suddenly drove on to the sand…

Wow! All the way from America, it was ‘The Beast’, being driven at speed!

Of course, it was President Biden! Making quite an entrance!

Eh…no…

NO? I knew it couldn’t be him, ‘cos first of all the driver of ‘The Beast’ smashed up the deck chairs and drove all over the food and drinks.

Wow! Then they started firing rotten sausages at Angela Merkel…

WOW! Then they threw stale baguettes at Macron…

(Editor: PLEASE! NO STEREOTYPES!) I can’t believe Joe Biden, or his driver, would behave like that!

The door opened…and out stepped a fired up PRESIDENT TRUMP! Wow, he gatecrashed it!

Yeah, first he told the G7 leaders they were nothing without him, then he said he’ll make a golf course out of those sand dunes!

500 people attended a ‘pilot concert’ at Dublin’s Iveagh Gardens last Thursday.

Meanwhile, supporters were also allowed to attend some sports’ events (including soccer and GAA) last weekend.

What we didn’t like…

Roscommon’s tame defeat to Armagh, which consigns us to Division 2 next season, brought a disappointing National Football League campaign to a very anticlimatic end.

Man (20s) arrested following Frenchpark ‘growhouse’ discovery Gardaí have arrested a man in his twenties following the seizure of approximately €592,000 worth of suspected cannabis herb during a search operation in Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon yesterday (Wednesday).

As part of what was described as “an intelligence-led operation”, Gardaí obtained a search warrant for a residence in the area and the search was conducted at 3.30 pm by the Roscommon and Longford Divisional Drugs Unit.

During the course of the search, a sophisticated growhouse was discovered in the residence and external sheds on the property. A total of 139 cannabis plants of varying maturity were seized, with an estimated street value of €112,000.

Approximately 22.5kgs of vacuum-packed cannabis herb was also seized with an estimated street value of €448,000. All drugs will now be sent for analysis.

The man, aged in his twenties, was taken to Castlerea Garda Station where he was detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.

Community ‘numb’ after toddler dies in tragic accident in Tulsk The wider Tulsk community was left numb with sadness following the tragic death of a young boy in a paddling pool accident last week.

23-month-old Dáithi Richard O’Grady was taken by air ambulance to University College Hospital Galway in a critical condition on Monday week last before

being transferred to Temple Street Children’s Hospital where he sadly passed away on Thursday.

He is survived by his heartbroken parents Hayley and Richard, brother, sisters, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, relatives, and friends. His funeral took place in private this week.

Local parish priest Fr. Micheál Donnelly told media last week that the whole community is numbed by the tragedy.

Local Fine Gael Councillor Liam Callaghan offered heartfelt condolences to the family, who he said are well known and highly respected by everyone in the area.

“There has been a sort of numb-

ness in the community since it happened last Monday week.

There is nothing any of us can say; it’s beyond words.

“There is great sympathy in the area for the family. This is a tragedy that could happen to any family, and all we can do is offer our deepest condolences to them at this time,” he said.

Minister of State for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief, Patrick O’Donovan, visited Lough Funshinagh near Rahara to meet with local representatives as work commenced to alleviate flooding in the area.

Minister of State for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief, Patrick O’Donovan, visited Lough Funshinagh near Rahara on Thursday last to meet with local representatives as work commenced on the installation of an overflow pipe to alleviate flooding in the area.

The Minister of State said he was delighted that Roscommon County Council had taken the decision to proceed with urgent works in order to control water levels at the lough.

“The flooding has placed a considerable hardship on homeowners and the community and the news of the commencement of

these works will help alleviate the distress and anxiety that the continued threat of flooding is having in the area,” he said.

The works have been designed

by Malachy Walsh and Partners Consulting Engineers on behalf of the local authority and involve the construction of a 2.6km pipeline to an existing watercourse leading to the Shannon, associated ancillary works and a control structure at Lough Funshinagh.

Deputy O’Donovan said works officially commenced on June 8th and were estimated to take between three and four months to complete.

Roscommon County Council Chief Executive, Eugene Cummins, thanked the Minister of

State and the Government for making the resources of the OPW available to carry out the works, which, he said, would allow the community of Lough Funshinagh to “sleep safely next winter”.

“I would also like to thank the present Municipal District Councillors and those politicians who trusted me to make the right decision on their behalf. In particular, I would like to thank John Curtin and his colleagues in the OPW of their advice and assistance over the last few months,” he said.

Rahara native and Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, Laurence Fallon, described it as “big day for the people around Lough Funshinagh”, who, he said, were grateful to the Minister and

the Office of Public Works.

“This wouldn’t have happened without the Chief Executive Eugene Cummins and his team at Roscommon County Council,” he said, before praising local farmers and landowners for their support of residents affected by the flooding.

Meanwhile, Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan paid tribute to local residents including Geraldine Murray and members of the Lough Funshinagh Flood Crisis Committee for their “continuous efforts” to find a solution.

“I look forward to seeing this progress quickly over the summer months with a scheduled completion date at the end of September/ start of October,” she said.

Kerrane: ‘Time to implement mental health recommendations’ < DAN DOONER

Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has said that all twenty-seven recommendations concluded by the report into the review of Roscommon Mental Health Services, commissioned by the HSE in 2015, must be implemented without delay.

Speaking having sought an update on the implementation of the report’s recommendations from the HSE, Deputy Kerrane said: “The report into Roscommon Mental Health Services was published in September 2017, and

included twenty-seven recommendations for action. Over three and a half years later, and just eleven recommendations are complete.

“This is a cause of concern given the report – in its conclusion, the need for timely implementation of the recommendations is stressed, as is the need for a clear action plan with a clear timeline, and a named person accountable for the implementation of recommendations and actions”.

Deputy Kerrane welcomed the appointment of a dedicated project

team to support the project manager in order to implement the sixteen outstanding recommendations.

“I note that as of last month, there was a vacancy on the project team for a Service User Representative. I understand recruitment was underway last month and I hope that position has been filled as the input of a service user would be vital and will also push to ensure that these recommendations are implemented without delay. I have no doubt that both the project team and manager are working

hard to see these recommendations actioned and any supports or resources needed from the HSE should be forthcoming, where necessary,” she said.

The Sinn Féin TD said it was important to have patient-centred mental health services.

“Ultimately, I believe a new build is required for psychiatric care at Roscommon Hospital to follow the new fiftybed facility at University Hospital Galway, which replaced an old, not-fitfor-purpose unit,” Deputy Kerrane concluded.

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK A column by Roscommon People editor Friday/all week Of course I’m enjoying Euro 2020. The saddest sentence I heard all weekend was when Peter Collins (RTE) said on Sunday night: “Just two matches tomorrow…” It’s a terrifying sign of things to come, that awful point in a tournament when the group stages are over and the knockout phase signals the move to one match a day (even less when you get to the last eight).

Still, we’re grateful for what we have, and a major football tournament is just what many of us needed. For now, the games are coming thick and fast. Netherlands’ 3-2 win over Ukraine was a thriller. Italy have impressed, while Spain merely drew 0-0 with Sweden, despite having 85% of the possession. Possession may be nine-tenths of the law; not scoring with 85% of it is criminal.

England got off to a winning start against Croatia. Sterling scored, but our neighbours are still committed to ‘the Euro’!

In studio, Damien Duff is testing my patience, Liam Brady is a welcome blast from the past, Alan Shearer and Rio Ferdinand are decent but dull, and I haven’t seen Roy Keane, because for some reason we simply don’t have ITV. Unsurprisingly, the BBC saw the Euro 2020 kick-off (a year late, due to Covid) as a perfect opportunity to repeat a documentary on England’s memorable (and heartbreaking) Euro 96 campaign.

Made a few years ago (and presented by Shearer) this was an excellent documentary, a warm-hearted nostalgia trip. It told the story of England’s rollercoaster campaign in the 1996 finals, played on home soil to the soundtrack of ‘Football’s Coming Home’, a new feelgood anthem which defined an era of shortlived national optimism.

There were poignant contributions from the charismatic Terry Venables (manager) and Paul Gascoigne, the latter a gifted and much-loved maestro on the pitch and a tormented, self-destructive soul off it. England seemed destined to win the tournament,

to bring football ‘home’, but the great adventure ended in tears, with defeat to Germany in a penalty shoot-out in the semi-final.

Watching this nostalgic documentary, I felt sadness and affection for England’s nearly men of ’96.

Sunday Roscommon senior footballers’ dispiriting league campaign ended with another defeat, and relegation. It was a dismal day for the Rossies in Armagh. Thus ends a forgettable campaign, with four defeats from four outings. As ever, we’ll keep the faith. Roscommon will now be heavy underdogs when they play Galway in the Connacht Championship. Our lads need to make a positive from that reality – and plan a coup. To paraphrase Baldrick in Blackadder, we need ‘A Cunning(ham) plan’!

Monday Spare a thought this week for Zionnghaka Chana, who has departed this world at the age of 76. He’s deeply mourned by his children and grandchildren, and of course by his wives…all 39 of them.

There I was this morning, browsing, when I clicked on the RTE website to see if there’s any breaking news/what’s been happening. The most prominent headline (on rte.ie) is ‘Man with 39 wives dies in India’.

Across from that startling headline was a photo of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson. My eyes darted from ‘Man with 39 wives dies…’ to the photo of the mischievous PM. But I knew it couldn’t be Boris that had died, as he’s not in India, he’s been hosting the G7 summit in Cornwall.

Besides, as far as I’m aware, he’s only been married three times.

It was time to find out more about the woman-magnet/sect leader (Zionnghaka Chana, not Boris). The news agencies report that he was a sect leader and polygamist who lived in a remote state in northeast India.

he had 39 wives at the time of his death, as well as “at least” 127 children and grandchildren. Mind you, the ‘chief minister’ of his state tweeted condolences to Chana’s ‘38 wives’. I guess it’s hard to keep count. Chana’s home village in the state of Mizoram became a tourist attraction because of the family, considered to be one of the largest in the world.

We will leave the last word to Mr. Chana, who never got to find out if life begins at 40 (wives): “‘I am ever ready for more matrimonial alliances” he once declared. *Boris is alive and well.

Tuesday Of course we’ve been living at Laptop Lane since long before Covid.

Call it what you will: Laptop Lane, Tablet Terrace, Computer Corner… our lives almost dictated by digital media and the devices that (usually) link us with it. Now, since the pandemic, we seem to spend most of our waking hours on Laptop Lane.

Often, it all works out fine, but sometimes it’s as frustrating as listening to Stephen Donnelly in full condescending mode, as infuriating as a Boris Johnson press conference.

The problem in our house, as in much of rural Ireland, is that the broadband connection has a mind of its own, and, like an irresponsible party animal with a stubborn streak, often it doesn’t feel like working.

Often, it feels like we’re actually living on WiFi Wasteland. Some days, with six people seeking online access in our house – for work and study purposes – the only sound you will hear are resigned cries of anguish at the wilting WiFi, the bewildering broadband. That, followed by the calming whistle of the kettle, loyal saviour in times of stress.

Meanwhile, compounding our technological trauma is the fact that we live in a phone signal blackspot.

Often, a call to one of our mobiles simply won’t register until several hours later. Yet, step into the gar-

den, and the signal is fine. But it sometimes gives new meaning to cold calling…

We are at the mercy of the erratic broadband connection.

Today, as I write, I just cannot get internet access. It’s chronically slow. Loading at a snail’s pace, and a tired snail at that. A snail that’s had a long season.

This moody and unreliable broadband is such a real threat to the grand dream of seamlessly successful remote working becoming the norm in rural Ireland.

Staring at a frozen screen earlier, I was left to my imagination. I wondered if, somewhere in a remote corner of the remotest part of Siberia, there is, this very morning, a stoic bachelor preparing his lunch in a ramshackle, stormbattered abode, isolated amongst rugged mountains and thousands of acres of sparsely populated terrain.

As his food cooks in the background, our friend checks his Twitter account, has a quick Zoom meeting, does some online research for his book ‘Selfisolating in Siberia: The early years’, and watches a couple of football videos on YouTube.

This evening, he will watch Roy Keane on ITV. Later, when the meat is cooked, today’s culinary delight will be shared…on Instagram.

If such a man exists, just now on Laptop Lane – or rather on WiFi Wasteland – I can’t even fire him a quick email (or ‘like’ his lunch).

Wednesday I see the new DUP leader, Edwin Poots, is suddenly very much at ease pouring praise on his deposed predecessor, Arlene Foster. It’s only a few weeks since Ms. Foster, in the nature of politics, was ruthlessly thrown overboard by plotters, as Poots (to put it at its eh…kindest) stood idly by. Now, Edwin cheerily declares that “history will be very kind to Arlene”.

Sean Mulryan donates iPads to local schools There was huge excitement in national schools throughout Roscommon as they all received an iPad donated to them by Roscommon businessman Sean Mulryan and Variety – the Children’s Charity of Ireland.

As part of both Sean’s and Variety Ireland’s own commitment to “promoting equal access to remote education”, each national school

received an upcycled iPad, provided to Special Needs Assistants in every national school across the county.

Kevin O’Brien, who heads up development projects for Variety Ireland, said: “This was a great week for special needs assistants in national schools across County Roscommon. Variety Ireland relies on donors like Sean Mulryan of Ballymore to help us deliver projects that directly benefit children who may need that extra bit of support with learning in the classroom.

“The fact that Sean has paid for 95 upcycled iPads for national schools throughout Roscommon means not only is this project beneficial to addressing children’s education needs, but it is also highly environmentally friendly”.

Variety – the Children’s Charity of Ireland, who celebrate their 70th birthday in Ireland next year – will be rolling out their national project over the next twelve months, where philanthropists who have an affiliation of links to a specific county commit to help special needs assistants in national schools by paying for upcycled iPads to help them teach children with learning difficulties.

CEO of Ballymore and Oran native, Sean Mulryan said: “We take sustainability and biodiversity seriously

“Supplying upcycled iPads to help Special Needs Assistants is a fantastic idea that will have a big impact on the education of children who may need that little bit more help with their learning. Castlerea native graduates with four gold medals!

Dr. Emma Callaghan from Castlerea, Co. Roscommon was conferred with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Obstetrics from NUI Galway at a virtual conferring on Tuesday last (June 15th).

Dr. Callaghan received four Gold Medals, signifying the highest grade obtained in four

subjects - Pathology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Medicine. The Gold Medal ceremony at NUI Galway is 104-years-old this year.

Professor Carmel Malone, Head of the School of Medicine at NUI Galway, said: “I extend my congratulations to Emma, to all the Gold Medal recipients, and

to this year’s medicine class for their resilience and dedication in what was an extremely difficult end to their degree. I have no doubt that they will make excellent interns and wish them well in their future careers”.

Dr. Callaghan will be starting her internship at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin in July.

Feature Film to be shot in Boyle!

Hill Sixteen Features in association with RTE will be shooting a feature length film called ‘13HOURS’ in Boyle this coming June, written and directed by Ciaran Creagh.

Executive producer Ferdia Doherty says the film crew is very excited to be filming in the town: “We are very excited about filming in this beautiful part of the world and

with the full support of Roscommon County Council, local associations, and of course the great people of Boyle.

We are grateful to all involved”.

A full crew will be on hand as well as some very talented Irish actors and visitors to the town will even notice some 80s-type vehicles on the roads!

Ferdia says the film will

employ as much local talent as possible on the production side and will utilising the many local B&Bs and hotels for accommodation.

Extras will also be needed and anyone interested in getting involved can email casting@hillsixteen.com with their name, age, and height.

Ferdia explained: “Because this is a low-budget feature we will not be

able to pay extras but we will be able to supply cups of coffee and tea and maybe a few biscuits!

“Our plan is for the least amount of disruption to the local community as we film. Our crew are very professional and well versed in managing these types of shoots. We look forward to being in the wonderful town of Boyle for around two weeks”.

Roscommon native Paddy Henry took home ‘Collaborative Journalism of the Year’ for NUIG, alongside collaborator Ellen O’Donoghue at the 21st National Student Media Awards, which took place recently. Paddy is the Editor of SIN (Student Independent News), NUIG’s student newspaper. He is a final year Journalism student in NUIG.

Arts Office seeks submissions for ‘Autumn Leaves’

Roscommon County Council Arts Office is seeking submissions from Roscommon poets and authors for poems, flash fiction and non-fiction essays/meditations to be included in Autumn Leaves, a Roscommon broadsheet to be published in late autumn.

This second broadsheet is part of the Arts Office Literary Development Programme, funded by Roscommon County Council and the Arts Council of Ireland, edited by Gerry Boland, who works with the Arts Office as Literary Programme Advisor, together with guest editor Jane Clarke.

Launching the call for submissions, Arts Officer Rhona McGrath said: “As a new initiative in 2020, the broadsheet was welcomed by readers and writers alike. We have a fantastic community of writers in Roscommon and look forward to another year of excellent submissions in number and content”.

The emphasis of the broadsheet will

be on unpublished work, however previously published work will be read and considered. To qualify for submission, writers and poets must have a strong Roscommon connection (born in, living in, working in, parents or grandparents from).

Roscommon poets are being invited to submit poems no longer than 30 lines in length (there is no minimum line length) on any theme.

Fiction writers are invited to submit flash fiction pieces on any theme with a maximum word limit of 300 for each story submitted.

Non-fiction writers are invited to submit prose essays/meditations on a nature theme with a maximum word limit of 300 for each piece submitted.

Email all submissions to artsofficer@roscommoncoco.ie.

The deadline for receipt of applications is 5 pm on Tuesday, 31st August.

Kicking it with the ‘Junior Bs’ in Fuerty!

It’s Monday morning, and I am back from my lovely walk around the rugby club grounds in Creggs, where, as usual, there were a few others out for

their daily exercise. I’ve been reflecting on a weekend that, to my mind, conclusively confirmed that life is almost back to normal – at least for those of us who are fully vaccinated.

On Friday evening, it was off to Mulhern Park in Fuerty, where our Junior B football team was in league action against St. Brigid’s. It was the first competitive game any of our lads had had since September last year, and we won a very entertaining match by a couple of points.

Speaking of memories, after the Mulhern Park trip, I met up with my brother Billy for a couple of lovely, open-air pints. We got talking about rugby tours we had been on down through the years, and while you might think that trips to Cardiff, Murrayfield, Twickenham, or Paris (one I missed), would get a mention, it was actually our very first one – to Kilrush in County Clare – that came to mind.

The year was 1978, and we were the reigning Connacht Junior Cup champions. Our captain, the Rasher, was working in the bank down in Kilrush, and as they were just getting a rugby club started again after a number of years, they invited us down for a weekend, during which we would play them in a friendly game. So off we headed to Kilrush, about twenty-five of us.

We arrived into town early on Friday afternoon, and booked into our accommodation, which happened to be over Tommy Mangan’s very popular bar. Being young and single, we felt very much at home in Tommy’s, and set about enjoying his hospitality fairly early in the afternoon. By about one o’clock in the morning,

some of the lads had ventured into the pool room, and a mini tournament had started up.

As time wore on, more and more of us went in to have a look at what was going on. Eventually it was time for the final, but by then, Tommy was getting lonely in the bar and his bar takings had dropped. So, just as the balls were set up for the final, he arrived into the pool room, leaned his big frame over the table, scooped up all the balls into a big bag, and announced to us all: “Ye’re not drinking fast enough, lads”.

With that, he ushered us all back into the public bar, where, having been there most of the day, we did the best we could to keep Tommy happy. Eventually we must have headed up the stairs to bed. The pool final never did take place, but I will never forget the manner in which it came to an abrupt end.

For a little while in the early evening, we headed off to another pub called Looney’s. There we met a man who told us he had been the winner of the big Draw the previous Christmas. His prize was 365 pints of cider, but when he went to collect his winnings, he found out he was

able to field a Junior B team is a very positive thing. It gives football to older lads who mightn’t make the Intermediate team, but aren’t ready to retire and still have plenty to offer. It also gives a chance for the young lads coming through to get game time and benefit from the experience of playing alongside some of the veterans.

An incident in the game summed it up for me, when my own lad Mark linked up a couple of times with young Evan Coleman in a move that ended with Mark scoring a Creggs’

The scandalous thought crossed our minds that maybe it was a fix, and was the only way to make a dent in his cider account. Anyway, we took pity on him and said we’d bring him to Mangan’s for a pint or two, but sadly he said he was already barred there and couldn’t join us.

The following day, a big crowd turned out to see the rugby match, but no one had told the Kilrush lads the rules. And so, we played hybrid game of Australian Rules and Gaelic football with the rugby ball.

Kilrush won it by a mile, and we retired to Tommy Mangan’s to lick our wounds. But by then the pool table was gone – Tommy was taking no chances with any potential distraction for his drinkers!

Kilrush Rugby Club has flourished in the meantime. For us, tours will come and tours will go, but our tour to Clare will live forever in our memories. Sadly Tommy Mangan’s is no more, but there still seems to be a Looney’s pub in the town, so, if I ever make it back, I will see if the unluckiest prize winner of all time ever got to clear his bill.

Stuff like that is what makes the GAA so important in rural communities, and having the Junior B competition makes such little things possible.

On my way home from the fantastic set-up that is Creggs Rugby Club on

Monday, I called into the GAA pitch to see the work going on there. While it is totally dug up now, it looks as if in a year or so we will have a pitch to match any in the county.

As I looked at it, and thought of the four fabulous pitches that the rugby lads now have to play on, I wished I could turn back the clock and just have one more run out on either pitch.

Sadly, no clock exists that could be turned back that far and so I, like so many more of my generation, have to rely on my fast fading memories.

Ziona Chana

Finally for this week …

Spare a thought for a religious leader in India, Ziona Chana, who had 39 wives, and who passed away this week at the age of 76.

Ziona had as many as 94 children during his interesting life. It is said there were a total of 167 members in his immediate family, all of whom lived in a huge four-story, pink house with about 100 rooms in Baktawng (a remote village in India). He had diabetes and high blood pressure (I suppose, having 39 wives, it’s no wonder!).

He always liked to have seven or eight wives by his side at all times, and declared in 2011 that he considered himself a lucky man to have so many people to care for. Any man who can handle the pressure of having 39 wives must be one of the greatest humans of all time, and after his exhausting life on this earth, the least I can hope for is that Ziona rests in peace!

WARNING: Beware of the fake pollsters!

A lot of people have been fooled by socalled ‘fake pollsters’, and ‘fake market researchers’ whether they target us online, on the phone, or face to face in the street or indeed, have the temerity to knock on our doors. My reason for mentioning this is due to recent revelations that Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil activists allegedly ‘posed as market researchers for polling’ with apparently Fine Gael ‘doing similar’.

This story came to light last week when it was detailed how party activists representing Sinn Féin were allegedly ‘issued with ID badges’ bearing the name of ‘a non-existent’ market research company in a bid to ascertain/gauge voters’ opinions regarding the political landscape, etc.

While this practice is extremely deceitful, it apparently appears to have been widely known to have been taking place. Therefore, if the statistics garnered by these ‘fakers’ contained any personal details then the office of the Data Protection Commission need to be all over it in a bid to find out how this bank of information is being used and stored.

Let me state that if the data was kept anonymous, and it if does not contain any member of the public’s personal details, then there should be no issue with it.

On a personal level, I never engage with political pollsters, for the simple reason I don’t have the time, I couldn’t be bothered, and I also believe that the way in which I choose to vote is my own business. However, if you’re

to ensure transparency and provide justification for disturbing you in the middle of Mare of Easttown!

The questions: It’s very important to listen to what you are being asked. For example, a legitimate political pollster will not simply want to find out how I’m voting and who I’m voting for… but why I’m voting for them…what issues matter to me and to the particular candidate/party, etc. For what it’s worth, I hope the above helps.

happy to engage with activists and like to cite the results of polls, especially when opinion moves in your direction, then read on, because, it’s my view that some of the questions you’re/we’re being asked are possibly, let’s say manipulated, in a bid to get the response the pollsters want. In addition, do bear in mind that polls are merely a snapshot of the participant’s current mood… things can change, and in many cases, this can happen quite literally overnight!

With that in mind, if I do happen to be approached by a pollster, and feel like engaging with them, for what it’s worth, here’s what I do.

I examine the wording: If I’m being targeted by email or by social media, I scan the content for spelling mistakes, inaccuracies or typos. Remember, a professional organisation has a reputation to uphold, therefore, all press releases, notifications and opinion polls will contain clean copy and accurate content.

If I’m being targeted/polled by phone, then before I answer a single question, I find out what particular call centre/organisation is making the approach, or is participating in the process. If the person asking the questions isn’t revealing their methodology, I hang up.

I don’t even say goodbye, I just hang up.

Remember, a legitimate pollster will be happy

This Sunday is Father’s Day! Therefore, for those of us who, last year, couldn’t visit that special man in our lives whether due to the lockdown, the restrictions, or heartbreakingly, due to them being no longer with us, the fact remains, this weekend we get to honour the hero who helped to shape us.

With that in mind, I’d like to say a big thank you to my own darling dad, Michael Kerins, a man who never complains and who never, ever, for as long as he’s been my dad, lost his temper nor has he

ever uttered a bad word about anyone…and why? Because he’s a decent and sweet human being who always sees the good in everyone. I do wish I could be more like him, but hey, we can’t all be perfect can we?

In addition, I’d also like to acknowledge all of the other amazing fathers, grandfathers, uncles, father figures, friends and male mentors who have not just touched the lives of Roscommon People readers but who have actively helped to mould them.

for being there for us. We love you, we appreciate you and we could not do without you.

Can I also say a big thank you to he-who-has-the-patience-of-asaint, and who fully understands my passion and my need to help all creatures. He is a wonderful dad to our adorable fur babies, and, I’ve got no doubt that without his help, and his emotional support, I could not have managed to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome so many beautiful sentient beings down through the years.

Nor, without his help, and without

his ability to ‘hold me up’ could I have coped with the amount of heartbreak I’ve had to endure due to other people’s neglect of animals – my fellow rescuers/animal welfare advocates will understand what I’m talking about. And yes, not all of these fur babies made it to their forever homes, some of them joined our family, as in, I got so emotionally attached, I could not bear to let them go, and I owe he-who-recognises-the-signs, and the quivering lip, a big thank you. I could not have done any of it without you.

We hold a grieving Tulsk family close in our hearts

I’d like to offer my sincere condolences to the heartbroken parents, to the family, to the friends and to the good people of Tulsk following the tragic, accidental death of a precious little boy last week.

The death of a child has got to be the single most agonising, earth-shattering, soul-deep and gut-wrenchingly raw experience that any parent can endure. I imagine that such an inconceivable and sudden occurrence leaves a clear and indelible mark on any family. Apart from the obvious shock, I imagine the related trauma would be so much more profound when their passing is due to unforeseen circumstances.

I do not know this bereaved family, however, I am familiar with many of the wonderful people who live in Tulsk and I do know that this closeknit community will provide a wealth of support to this family in their time of need. This level of support will extend way beyond the realms of offering condolences, calling to the door and attending any religious gatherings in solidarity with the family who will no doubt need every bit of help, understanding and comfort that I know will be available to them.

No words, absolutely none, that anyone can offer will make this family’s pain go away; however, it may help them in some small way to know that everyone at the Roscommon People HQ and indeed, every one of our readers are holding them close in our hearts. May your darling boy rest in peace.

Dr. Hyde Park: 50 years of memories!

This Sunday, June 20th marks 50 years since the current Roscommon GAA county ground was opened in Roscommon town. Here, Seamus Duke looks back on the history of the venue simply known as ‘The Hyde’…

On the 20th of June 1971, a further chapter began in Roscommon GAA when a new county ground was opened in Roscommon town. Built in 1969 and named after Roscommon native and the first President of Ireland, Dr. Douglas Hyde, it was called Dr. Hyde Park.

The first Connacht SFC game played at the new venue was between Roscommon and Sligo and it didn’t live long in the memory as a Mickey Kearins-led Sligo beat Roscommon by 0-10 to 1-5.

In fact, the first-ever competitive game played in Dr. Hyde Park was the curtain-raiser that day, an U-14 county final between Roscommon Gaels and St. Michael’s. The player to have the honour of being the first to score at the new venue was Roscommon Gaels player Greg McCrann who scored a point early in that final.

Greg went on to win an

All-Ireland U-21 medal with Roscommon when they beat Kerry, also at Dr. Hyde Park some years later in 1978.

The land where Dr. Hyde Park now stands was known as ‘Raftery’s Field’, owned by a man called Brodie Raftery from Glenamaddy. The field had seen some GAA action in the past and the 1943 county final was played there between St. Patrick’s and Strokestown.

The Roscommon county GAA grounds had been located at St. Coman’s Park in Roscommon town.

However, that pitch regularly flooded during winter and after it was determined that it could not be drained, a local committee sought to buy land in the town to develop it as a county ground.

Raftery’s Field was purchased in 1969 for a sum in the region of 3,000 pounds. A local committee had been set up to raise the

funding required and to develop the ground.

This writer can vividly recall, that as schoolchildren attending Roscommon CBS, Brother Dwyer and Brother Coffey, both of whom were heavily involved in the GAA, brought us all out to Dr. Hyde Park on a regular basis to pick stones from the new pitch. I remember Dick Hughes and Ned Casey driving the tractors as the pitch was prepared.

The surrounds consisted of three grass banks and a bank of concrete seats which are still there. The dressing rooms were situated in the Hyde Community Centre and the players had to walk a couple of hundred yards through the crowds to get to the pitch on the day of a big game. The present dressing rooms were only built in the early 1990s.

both at club and county level.

In terms of the county scene, my own personal highlights were the 1977 Connacht SFC final win against Galway, which was Roscommon’s first senior Connacht win at the venue.

Winning the 1978 All-Ireland U-21 title at Dr. Hyde Park was a day that no one who was present will ever forget either as Roscommon overturned a highly fancied Kerry team in front of a large crowd.

The Connacht SFC wins in 1990 and 1991 (replay) were very special days too.

In 1990 (versus Galway) it was Roscommon’s first senior title in ten years while the following year, to beat Mayo in Hyde Park in a replay was especially sweet.

The replayed Connacht final against Galway in 1998 was also a very special day. The atmosphere that Saturday evening was something I shall never forget as both teams went hammer and tongs in a very high quality game. A goal from Michael Donnellan in extra-time settled the issue, but it was some occasion.

However, the win for Roscommon against Mayo in the 2001 final was probably the most dramatic and exciting day that I can recall at Dr. Hyde Park. A beautiful day, a massive crowd, and a last-minute goal from Gerry Lohan to win the match by a single point - it doesn’t get any better than that! Indeed, it’s hard to believe it but that’s the last Connacht senior title that Roscommon have won at ‘The Hyde’.

Park have been upgraded over the years but most people would agree that a further major overhaul is well past time at the moment. Terracing on three sides was added in the 1990s while in the early 2000s a 3,500-seater stand was built. In addition, a new pitch was laid in 2017 and, after years of problems with the surface, it is now recognized as one of the best in the country.

However, with strict ‘Health and Safety’ guidelines in place, the capacity of Dr. Hyde Park has been reduced from 30,000 to 18,500 in the past five years, hence the urgent need to upgrade the facilities at the stadium. The ease of access and its ideal central location makes it a fantastic venue for big games all year round.

The responsibility for the upkeep and the running of

Dr. Hyde Park now rests with Roscommon County Board following an agreement drawn up with the Roscommon Gaels club.

This writer spent over 20 years on the Hyde Park Committee and I know about the huge efforts that have been made over the years to keep the stadium running.

The venue has been part and parcel of the fabric of Roscommon life for 50 years now and with the Connacht semi-final coming up between Roscommon and Galway on July 4th, that legacy is set to continue.

We have seen the greatest players in Gaelic football over the past 50 years play there and some great hurlers too. The park has brought great excitement and drama to Roscommon town in that time, not to mention badly needed

business on the weekends of big games. Sadly, the pandemic has put a temporary stop to all that but hopefully things will be back to normal very soon and crowds can return to The Hyde.

The expanded Small Business Assistance Scheme for COVID is now open for applications.

Phase 2 of this scheme has been expanded to include those that had previously been ineligible.

• Businesses working from non-rateable premises, with a turnover over €50,000, are now eligible t apply and if they meet the other eligibility criteria will receive a grant of €4,000.

• Businesses with a turnover between €20,000 and €49,999 are also now eligible to apply if they meet the other eligibility criteria and will receive a grant of €1,000.

This is one of the medals presented to Roscommon’s All-Ireland minor football winning heroes of 1951… still safely in the possession of the family, 70 years after their loved one received it.

In last week’s issue, on the occasion of their Golden Jubilee celebrations, we published a photo of members of the Roscommon panel which won the 1951 All-Ireland Minor Final. 50 years on (in 2001), the team was honoured at Dr. Hyde Park.

John Lavin Junior sent us this email: “This is the All-Ireland medal won by my dad John Lavin (RIP) in 1951. He was a member of that panel and was always proud of that fact, and of the medal that he won”.

Thank you John for sharing this photo of that historic medal with our readers, and congratulations once again to the heroes of 1951. Our thoughts are with the families of those players now deceased.

Their deeds are fondly remembered.

Frontline workers still waiting for recognition – Naughten Independent TD Denis Naughten has said it is “disappointing” that fifteen months after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, frontline workers have yet to receive any recognition from Government.

Deputy Naughten raised the need for such recognition during Leaders Questions with An Taoiseach Micheál Martin in the Dáil this week.

Fitzmaurice critical of REAP scheme process As rejection letters were issued to some applicants of the Results-based Environment Agri Pilot Programme (REAP) this week, Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice has been critical of the selection process and of the scheme itself.

Commenting this week, Deputy Fitzmaurice said that due to being oversubscribed, approximately 2,000 farmers haven’t been accepted onto the scheme as they weren’t selected during a “computerised random selection process”.

“We now have a situation where a farmer may have been rejected from the scheme, despite their next-door neighbour – who received the same amount of points as part of the initial assessment – being accepted. I am also led to believe that any successful applicants who decide to drop out of the scheme will not be replaced at all, meaning there is a possibility that the

full budget will not be used,” he said.

Deputy Fitzmaurice added that the most worrying aspect of the scheme was the indicator list of species for the Low Input Grassland measure.

“From talking to planners on the ground, there are significant concerns that even the successful applicants to the scheme will find it extremely difficult to score highly on this measure – meaning the value of participating in the scheme will be greatly diminished.

“The payments available under this scheme will not match what farmers received under previous environmental schemes, including GLAS and REPS. And while I understand that this is a pilot scheme, it does not bode well for the incoming CAP period if this is what is being drawn up.

“Farmers must be paid fairly for the level of work put in as part of an environmental scheme,” he concluded.

Community Monuments funding of €400,000 for Roscommon and Galway Projects in Roscommon and Galway are set to receive almost €400,000 under the Community Monuments Fund, announced yesterday (Wednesday) by Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform Malcolm Noonan.

The objective of the fund is to support the conservation, maintenance, protection and promotion of local monuments and historic sites.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy welcomed the news that projects in County Roscommon would benefit

from €146,555 in funding while those in Galway will receive €224,867.

“Under stream one, the Abbeygormican ecclesiastical site in Ballinasloe will receive €70,000, while in County Roscommon, Rahara Church will benefit from €61,052, and Kilteevan Church is earmarked for €40,000. Under Stream three, the Rathcroghan Archaeological Complex will receive €15,503 and the Church and Mausoleum at Strokestown Park will benefit from funding of €30,000

Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, Laurence Fallon, said it was more good news for the Rahara area following the commencement of works to alleviate flooding at Lough Funshinagh last week.

“It’s marvellous news for Rahara. The church is a listed building but it has fallen into disrepair. This funding of €61,000 will go towards making the structure safe which will be a relief to families who have graves quite close to it,” he said.

“Last July, the Taoiseach promised me that he would look at the possibility of providing frontline staff with additional leave, and last December, the Scottish Government pledged to pay every NHS and social care worker a £500 Covid bonus.

“While all frontline workers –

within our health services or other services, including essential retail – should receive some acknowledgement of the Trojan work that they put in throughout pandemic by their employers, in particular I believe that the time is now right for Government to recognise the work of all frontline health workers”.

Deputy Naughten said doctors, nurses and other healthcare staff had placed themselves at risk to attend work each day and that the country owed them a “huge debt of gratitude”.

“It is disappointing that even though the Taoiseach gave me a commitment to examine the proposal I presented to him last July to offer additional paid leave to frontline healthcare workers, nothing has happened.

“I would again plead with Government to take up my proposal, or alternatively, follow the example set by the Scottish Government and provide these frontline staff with an acknowledgement that recognises their sacrifices during this pandemic,” Deputy Naughten concluded.

With more people choosing to barbecue and dine outdoors this summer, Catherine shows how with a little bit of preparation and planning, you can cook an amazing barbecue for your guests while producing less food waste and taking some pressure off you as a host.

Catherine Fulvio said: “In this collaboration I am delighted to have teamed up a total of fourteen county councils to host a cookery demonstration sharing some easy delicious recipes and helpful hints on how to make the most of your food when having a barbecue

Sean Mulyran visits Lake O’Flynn development Ballinlough Development Association was delighted to welcome Sean Mulryan, Chairman and Chief Executive of Ballymore, to its newly completed marina development at Ballinlough’s Lake O’Flynn.

Mr. Mulryan, a native of Oran, has achieved worldwide acclaim for his pioneering work in construction – his concept for London’s Sky Pool being the latest in a series of architectural

achievements.

Speaking during the visit, Mr. Mulryan said: “I am delighted to see the work that has been undertaken at Lake O’Flynn. The new jetty is a much-needed amenity in West Roscommon”.

The project was designed by architect Stephen Blake of Co. Galway, with project construction undertaken by local contractor P. Webster Construction.

Ballinlough Development Association expressed its thanks to Roscommon Leadership Partnership, who provided 75% of the funding

for the project, the Western Development Commission for the debt finance needed to complete the project, and to the people of the area for their support both in past and future fundraising efforts.

It is now hoped that the new development will join the Suck Valley Way initiative in attracting tourists to the area and adding to the local economy.

Castlerea MART WATCH There was a good number of stock presented again this week, with trade and demand holding extremely well.

The heifer ring, with some very good quality heifers on offer, reported an excellent trade, with lots exceeding €3 a kilo.

The bullock ring witnessed similar demand this week as customers continue to source stock, while the heavier lots remain a firm trade.

The dry cow trade saw prices peak at €2,090, while €2,290 was forked out for a limousin cow and her bull calf at foot. The weanling rings continue to witness good clearance, with quality the key, while the calf trade remains very strong also.

Cows with calves at foot made from €940 to €2,290, and springers made from €950 to €1580 per head. In terms of calves, there were good numbers on offer again this week with prices ranging from €70 to €460 for continental lots.

Embrace FARM to remember Roscommon people lost or injured in farm accidents This month, Embrace FARM, the farm accident support network, is hosting a #HereForYou campaign to acknowledge the support networks of those left bereaved by, or who have survived, farm accidents.

Following the success of the organisation’s first ever online Remembrance Service last year, Embrace FARM will host its eighth annual Remembrance Service for those affected by farm accidents on Sunday, June 27th at 2 pm. The event will be live streamed on www.embracefarm.com.

Speaking about the Remembrance Service, Brian Rohan, Founder Embrace FARM said “We are pleased to confirm that our annual Remembrance Service will be live-streamed on our website again this June following the successful online ceremony in 2020.

3,500 Roscommon farmers to gain under CAP redistribution The Irish Natura & Hill Farmers Association (INHFA) has contested the narrative that the current CAP proposals will undermine the income of Irish farmers.

INHFA National Council representative for Roscommon/East Galway John Flynn stated that nationally “under a full flattening of payments, 72,710 farmers will gain, representing 60% of all farmers while in Roscommon 3,587 farmers will benefit which accounts for 64% of all farmers in the county”.

“With the EU Parliament holding their ground for the full flattening of payments, it is unbelievable that a Parliament in Brussels is more in touch with the needs of Irish farmers than many of the public

and farming representatives here.

“A full flattening of Pillar 1 payments would see all farmers paid a national average by 2026 of €265/ ha which includes the proposed eco-scheme. This will be delivered through the convergence of payments over the lifetime of the CAP Programme,” he added.

Another proposal outlined at EU level is the option to front-load payments through the Complementary Redistributive Income Support for Sustainability (CRISS). This, Mr. Flynn said, allows countries to target additional payments on the first number of hectares to support small holders. To fund this a country can put a limit on the maximum payment and if

required apply a cut to the overall Pillar 1 budget.

Mr. Flynn outlined how the INHFA are supporting this “as it will benefit small holders and potentially increase the payments for farmers on the first 10-20ha to over €300/ha which will be critical to a county like Roscommon where the average farm size is 26ha”.

He added: “It is vital that the delivery of public goods in terms of improved water and air quality, improved biodiversity and mitigating against climate change is remunerated in the upcoming CAP. “The EU’s Nature Fitness Check has established how our designated lands are delivering between €2 to 3 billion each year to our economy which translates into almost €3,000/ha. In

Irish Water to progress Roscommon wastewater project Irish Water says it is working in partnership with Roscommon County Council to progress the Roscommon Town Main Drainage Scheme project in order to safeguard the environment and provide for future growth and development in the town.

When completed, the €20 million project will reduce the risk of sewer flooding in Roscommon town and improve water quality in the River Jiggy and River Hind.

It will also increase the capacity of the sewer network, allowing for current and future population growth and economic development.

The project involves the construction of approximately 7.2 kilometres of new sewer infrastructure and rising mains.

New pumping stations will be constructed at the existing wastewater treatment plant and at Circular Road, Castlerea Road, Ardsallagh and Ballinagard. Six of the exist-

ing storm water overflows will also be upgraded and a further six decommissioned.

Eunan Canavan, Regional Infrastructure Lead with Irish Water, commented on the project: “Irish Water is committed to protecting the local environment and supporting the growth of homes and businesses. This major upgrade of the sewer network will ensure that the wastewater infrastructure is in place to support ongoing development in Roscommon town.

“Together with our partners Roscommon County Council and GMC Utilities Group, we look forward to continuing to engage with local stakeholders in advance of the works progressing to minimise any disruption associated with this essential project. It is expected that works will commence in the coming weeks and will be completed by early 2023”.

newsbriefs HSE: Continuing impact of cyber attack One month on from the cyber attack on HSE IT systems, the CEO of the Saolta Hospital Group has warned that patient services continue to feel the impact in Letterkenny, Sligo, Mayo, Roscommon, Portiuncula and Galway University Hospitals.

Tony Canavan, Saolta CEO, highlighted the ongoing impact after the ransomware attack.

“What we’re finding is that most of our IT systems are not communicating with each other, they’re not talking to each other and they’re not sharing information with each other and that has a direct impact on our ability to deliver patient care,” he said.

“We’re also asking patients that if you’re using our emergency departments in particular to give some consideration as to whether that’s the most appropriate place for you to go. If you have a genuine emergency, come to our emergency departments in our hospitals and you will be cared for. However, if it’s possible that you could receive appropriate care in some other setting - perhaps it’s your GP or pharmacist - you should give that some consideration as well,” Mr. Canavan said.

Outpatient appointments and elective activity also remain limited as core systems continue to face issues.

John S’s door they set aflame, which he quelled with sand and spade, As the rabble rampaged down the street, to where clay pipes were made; With rifle butts they burst the doors and the roofs they petrol bombed; Husbands, wives and children onto the smoke filled street were bound.

In 2016, Seán Browne from Castlerea shared this unique photograph of Knockcroghery in the aftermath of June 20th, 1921.

It was given to him by the late Brother O’Dowd.

Their homes they quickly were ablaze, the roofs being made of thatch, While men-folk fled in night shirts and what little they could snatch; Wives with babes clutched to their breasts, young children scampered round; Confusion reigned, the cries, the pain, no comfort could be found.

Gunfire, rifle an’ pistol shot commingled in the air With the peal of thatch and timber flame; no horror could compare; The good folk though, being brave and true, with the tad they could redeem, United in congregation, departed from the scene.

They fled up to An Creagán, they call it Hangman’s Hill; The neighbours all from miles around, when the flames the skies did fill, With gifts of clothes and shelter, like Guardian Angel’s came And the Reverend Humphries played his part with fine good Christian aim.

The mob, their dirty deed now done, for rest they settled down; Drank an’ smoked their stolen booty on the bridge below the town; They jeered and mocked their victims, while their homes burned to the ground; Revenge, they said, for Lambert’s death, a servant of the Crown.

‘I’ve always wanted to create a children’s book that captured the essence of the burning of Knockcroghery’ People who read live a thousand lives, says new author, Annmarie Murray… night, but I didn’t realise the amount of families that had emigrated. The release of the book has encouraged descendants from families who emigrated to get in touch.

This weekend, the 100th anniversary of the burning of Knockcroghery village by the Black and Tans will be commemorated. Annmarie Murray, who hails from a family which is steeped in the folklore of the village, has written a book on the famous event. Annmarie will launch her book outdoors at Murray’s Bar/Mai’s Kitchen, Knockcroghery on this Saturday, 19th of June (8 pm). PAUL HEALY spoke with Annmarie about this project…

Annmarie, you’ve just published a beautiful book, aimed at children, on the subject of the burning of Knockcroghery in 1921. Congratulations!

Can you tell our readers how this came about?

I’ve always wanted to create a children’s book that captured the essence of the story of the burning of Knockcroghery and working from home during lockdown provided me with the time and inspiration. The concept had been whirring around in my head for quite some time and, with the centenary approaching, I felt if I didn’t push myself now, I never would.

Once you’d decided to write the book, what was the process like? I gather you have created a fictional family?

Initially, I had a much younger audience in mind. Because of my design background I was focused on telling the story through a primarily visual format, and had lots of fun doodling potential characters and settings. My plan was to relate the story using an age-appropriate rhyming structure. However, the more I researched the event the more invested I became in what the people of Knockcroghery must have endured, and I realised there was a much greater

How does it feel to be a published author? And have you any plans for further books?

It feels wonderful! I am proud to have created something that is historically significant to my home environs. It was a challenge, but one which I relished as I was able to combine two of my greatest joys in life – illustrating and storytelling. Yes, I have already started work on a second children’s book but this will be a work of fiction and will target younger children. I think I might just have been bitten by the literary bug!

story to tell. If I was to do justice to the history of the event I would have to focus on a more detailed retelling and aim it at children who were reading independently and who would enjoy a historically accurate retelling of the fire.

I wanted my young audience to be able to imagine what it would have been like to have been a child living in the village that night and to be able to empathise with the families who lived through this terrible tragedy, and so my protagonist, 11-year-old Sally Finnegan, was created. The Finnegans depict a typical family living in Knockcroghery in 1921, and while the family is fictional, their experiences are based on true-life events.

For historical accuracy, some names mentioned in this book are authentic, as are many of the locations, such as the clay pipe factory, Hangman’s Hill and the train station, all of which can still be visited today. The book reconstructs the burning, and the rebuilding of people’s livelihoods, along with the reformation of Knockcroghery village.

Did you have to do a lot of research before writing the book, or, as a Knockcroghery native, have you always been aware of the detail of the events of that terrifying night?

My late grandfather, Jimmy Murray, was four years old on the night of the burning. And my family home is one of the few surviving buildings from that night. Naturally, I grew up hearing stories about that night and I considered myself reasonably informed. It was not until I began researching related articles and journals that I realised how imperfect my account of events really was. That’s when it hit me, most young people would have, at best, an imperfect knowledge of the events of that fateful night. I decided if I wanted to encourage a new generation to discover their local history I would have to write a story that was historically accurate. As luck

would have it I am blessed with a local historian in the family. My aunt, Mary Dwyer, was a fountain of knowledge and inspiration throughout the entire process.

Mary is very interested in the history of our village, a fact reflected in her impressive collection of books and folders filled with journal and newspaper articles collected by my late grandfather Jimmy and his brother, Canon Paddy Murray.

I believe the beautiful illustrations are also your own work. How important are they to the book?

For me, the illustrations would always be an intrinsic part of the process. I studied Graphic Design and Communications in LSAD Limerick. During my four years in Limerick, I always enjoyed illustration projects the most. I find illustrating very relaxing and I love challenging myself to design new compositions and to create unique and distinct styles.

Of course the subject of the story will always impact the tone of the illustration, but there is always room to experiment within those boundaries. In this case I wanted to illustrate for children, but not alienate the older reader that is interested in local history. It was important that the chosen style wasn’t too cartoon-like, or too corporate. I experimented with lots of different design ideas before finally settling on my finished colour palette and design composition. Art is incredibly important to the book. Not only is it a visual representation of the history, it also brings the story to life, heightening the reader’s experience with recognisable locations and diagrams of familiar subjects.

Growing up in the village, were you always aware of the legacy for generations of families arising from that historic night in 1921?

I always knew that some neighbouring families had grandparents or greatgrandparents living in the village on that

Do you think well-written books like this, with such nice illustrations, have a special role in educating children, and how important do you think it is that young boys and girls continue to read a lot of books?

Is there anything nicer than the smell of a new book? It is hard to beat the tactile experience of holding a book in your hand, the vibrancy of the colour and the feel of the page under your thumb. We all have smartphones and take numerous pictures, but yet it is the ones we print that we have for years to come. People who read live a thousand lives. There is something organic and simplistic about reading. It requires time, a clear mind and the ability to imagine. There is no greater gift we can give a child.

We know you are a native of Knockcroghery, and indeed a member of a particularly well-known family. Your late grandfather was Jimmy Murray, captain of the Roscommon team that won the senior football All-Irelands of 1943 and ‘44. Did your grandad tell you a lot about what he’d heard of the night the village was attacked?

My grandad has been an extremely influential figure in my life. He was a very driven and ambitious man who taught us to never shy away from a challenge. Not only was he an accomplished footballer but he established a family business, ‘Murray’s Bar’, which lives on today under the patronage of my father (John).

My grandfather was a great storyteller and often regaled us with stories of local characters and events and of course stories from his childhood about the burning out of the village. As a person he was fearless and incredibly ambitious, not only in football! As young as he was, the event (in 1921, when Jimmy was aged four) clearly impacted his young life and he could vividly recall himself and a few other children poking the hot ashes the day after the burning. He remembered the Black and Tans would come into their home and pull pictures from the walls, searching for money hidden behind them. My great-grandmother often told my father the story of how grandad once kicked a Black and Tan soldier in the leg when he threw his father’s new jacket onto the floor. He was very aware of the changes that took place in the

village over his lifetime and there is a very interesting article my grandad did with Declan Coyne about Knockcroghery in the olden days. That article paints a vibrant picture of Knockcroghery as a busy market place. My entire family have been incredibly supportive during my writing of the book.

I gather that Project Knockcroghery, the Council and others have supported you...

Yes, absolutely, and I would love to take the opportunity to thank most sincerely Project Knockcroghery and Roscommon County Council for their support.

Also, I would like to thank Ethel Kelly who took a great deal of time to show me how clay pipes were made and gave me a wonderful account of the history of clay pipes in Knockcroghery. And of course I would like to thank Mary Dwyer for her invaluable research and support.

I am having a launch for this book at 8 pm on Saturday, the 19th of June, outdoors at Murray’s Bar. In the next week or so there will be copies available to purchase in our local shop in Knockcroghery (Daybreak) and in the Claypipe Visitor Centre too.

Finally Annmarie, what’s next for you?

I am almost working a full year as a graphic designer for a digital advertising agency in Dublin. As of now I’m happy to keep exploring new ideas for books.

I am always looking to collaborate with local authors and would love to get more involved in book production. I am also keen to further develop my illustration skills by taking on new opportunities.

I hope that this is the start of a new venture in illustration.

As we approach Joe’s First Anniversary his wife Mary, sister Noreen, niece Carol, nephew James, aunt Sr. De Chantel and extended family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to all who sympathised and supported us when Joe passed away. Those who sent mass cards, enrolments, sympathy cards, phone calls, messages of condolence, floral tributes and generous donations to North West Hospice Sligo, a sincere thank you.

We will be forever grateful to family and neighbours who called with food, refreshments, kindness and support to us, and to Tracey and colleagues who provided food for us on the day of the funeral. Thank you to Dr. Greene and staff in Carrick Medical Centre, Fintan Cox and staff in Cox’s Pharmacy, Public Health Nurse Irene Reynolds, NowDoc and the Paramedics for looking after Joe with great care and kindness during his illness. Thank you to the staff in Sligo University Hospital, Mater Hospital Dublin, University Hospital Roscommon and the North West Hospice Sligo, all who provided exceptional care for Joe throughout his illness. A heartfelt thanks to Fr. Brian Conlon who led us through special prayers and memories at Joe’s bedside.

Thank you to the Sacristan Anne and the ladies who prepared the Church for Joe’s Funeral Mass. A sincere thank you to Fr. Stephen Ezenwegbu for celebrating the Funeral Mass and his support throughout. To Carmel Hackett for the beautiful music and singing in the Church and to Brian for livestreaming the Mass which allowed many to join in the celebration of Joe’s life, thank you.

Many thanks to all who stood so respectfully and formed Guards of Honour along the route to St. Brigid’s Church, Dangan and on Joe’s final journey to Kilmore Cemetery. To our neighbours for digging the grave and preparing Joe’s final resting place, done with such care and thoughtfulness, thank you.

A special word of thanks to Dermot Foley, Funeral Director, for your professionalism and the dignified manner in which he carried out the funeral arrangements, and to Cathal and Mary Brady for the use of the Funeral Home.

On this what would be Mollie’s birthday and her 53rd Wedding anniversary, her heartbroken husband Seamus and all the Scally family would like to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation for the kindness and support we received on the great loss of Mollie.

Sincere thanks to everyone that sent sympathy cards, phoned, sent texts, left messages of condolence, called to the house, sent floral tributes and for the endless refreshments that were dropped to our door.

We would especially like to thank our closest neighbours and friends Agnes and Martin and all the Feeney family for their continued love and support, to all our Lisnamult neighbours and beyond who lined the roads from our home all the way through the journey to Mollie’s final resting place, it was an extremely moving and very much appreciated tribute.

We would like to thank the Palliative Care team, especially Caroline and Margaret the doctors and staff at University Hospital Galway and Roscommon Hospital for their care, a special thank you to Dr’s Keenan and Donnegan and David Hynes and all the staff at Hynes Chemist for their kindness and consideration over the years.

Thank you to Fr. Kevin Fallon for the visits prior to and for the Funeral Mass, thank you to Fr. Ultan Naughton travelling for the graveside prayers and burial.

Richael gears up for Tokyo Paralympics <SEAMUS

Roscommon’s Richael Timothy produced a couple of outstanding performances at the Para-Cycling Road World Championships in Portugal last weekend. In the time trial on Thursday last, she finished 5th, and then on Saturday, finished 4th in the road race.

It was Richael’s first major road race event since 2019 because of the pandemic, and now the preparations for the Paralympic Games in Tokyo can begin in earnest.

She told People Sport this week that she was delighted to get back to competition last week: “It was great to be involved in competitive road racing again. I was unlucky in the time trial as the chain came off on the final lap and that cost me time, so that was disappointing, but I was happy with my 4th place in the road race,” she said.

“There will be more competitive races now here at home and it’s all gearing towards the games in Tokyo. We have a two-week camp in Majorca coming up and then we fly out to Portugal ahead of the games and we will be based there prior to travelling to Tokyo.

“The Covid situation has been tough, and there are problems getting equipment that we need as back up, but I am looking forward to the next few months of racing and training and the games in Tokyo to cap it all off,” she added.

The former Roscommon footballer from the St. Croan’s club, who has also represented Ireland in soccer, has made sensational progress in the the world of para-cycling. She won a bronze medal in the 10k race at the World Track Championships in 2020, and is now looking to bring further glory back to the county over the next few months.

When Roscommon Camogie took the ambitious step of appointing Frank Browne to manage their junior team this year, one of the main aims was to secure promotion in the National League. That aspiration is on the line when Roscommon face Cavan in the Division Four decider at Pearse Park on Sunday.

The experienced Mayo man has spearheaded a splendid revival in Roscommon’s fortunes, and they will go into Sunday’s final in confident mood following an impressive campaign. Good wins against Mayo, Louth and Kildare were followed by a battling performance in a three-point win over Tyrone in the semi-final last weekend. This will give Roscommon players a chance to avenge a ten-point beating handed out

by Cavan in the championship in Athleague last year.

Manager Frank Browne told People Sport this week that he is looking forward to the challenge.

“We have a few knocks and niggles

after the Tyrone match, but I am expecting to be able to pick from a full squad for Sunday’s game. I’m glad in a way that we had to battle hard to

beat Tyrone because it will stand to us against Cavan. I am expecting a real tough game on Sunday; there is not much between these teams.

“The Roscommon girls have a score to settle after what happened against Cavan last year and they will be ready for another battle.

“The players have trained hard, and as long as we get 100% effort from everybody on the day, then I’ll be happy. Of course we want to win, but as long as we give it everything, we will have no complaints after it’s over.

“We are playing Clare and Kildare in the championship but this final is now our main priority. I always maintained that Roscommon are too good to be in this division and I will be hoping we can go out and prove that on Sunday,” he said.

Cavan were far too good for Roscommon when the teams met last year but the Rossies are a team transformed this term. It would be a huge boost to the game in the county if they were to take this title on Sunday. They have the momentum and while it will be close, Roscommon can indeed turn the tables.

All-rounders! Michael Glavey’s claim national success There were great scenes in Abbottstown in Dublin last Saturday when Michael Glavey’s won the AllIreland Intermediate Mixed Rounders title, defeating Dublin club Na Fianna in the final on a score of 36-11.

The game produced great batting and fielding with brilliant catches from Na Fianna’s Aodhaghan O’Deasmunaigh and Ronan Gately while Dylan Trindle and Sean Bailey starred for the Roscommon outfit.

The Dublin club led 5-4 after the third inning before Glavey’s produced an amazing performance at bat in the fourth. John Nolan and Anna Gallagher got great hits as they ran in 11 scores and turned the final on its head.

Na Fianna never gave in but they had no response to magnificent Roscommon fielding and, fittingly, it was man of the match, Dylan

Racing this weekend starts this evening on the flat at Leopardstown, off at 4.10 pm. The flat meeting tomorrow is at Limerick in the evening at 4.15 pm with a national hunt card on at Down Royal at 1.50 pm. Saturday is day two at Down Royal with a flat card in the afternoon at 1.35 pm.

There is no racing on Sunday, and there is a meeting on the level at Ballinrobe on Monday evening at 4.40 pm.

There is television coverage of Ascot on ITV every day with Virgin Media 1 and 2 covering today and tomorrow.

Racing is also carried on UTV.

Royal Ascot Report Racing opened on Tuesday with a win for 2/7 favourite Palace Pier in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes beating Aidan O’Brien’s Lope Y Fernandes by 1½l with Sir Busker a further length back in third. The winner was ridden by Frankie Dettori for the Gosden yard with Seamie Heffernan aboard the runner-up.

In the Coventry Stakes Oisin Murphy was in the saddle as 11/1 shot Berkshire Shadow beat Eldrickjones and Vintage Clarets 1¼l and a neck. The Kings Stand was won by a well backed Oxted at 4/1 who came with a late run under Cieren Fallon to beat Arecibo and Extravagant Kid by 1¾l and a neck. Fallon is the son of Kieran Fallon and was riding for Roger Teal.

The Group 1 St. James’s Palace Stakes gave Ireland

a 1, 2, 3 as Jim Bolger’s 2000 Guineas easy winner Poetic Flare, 7/2 favourite, beat Jessica Harrington’s Lucky Vega with Aidan O’Brien’s Battleground in third. Bolger’s sonin-law Kevin Manning rode the winner, Shane Foley the runner-up and Ryan Moore the third separated by 4¼l and a neck.

No luck for Rachael Blackmore having her first Royal Ascot in the Ascot Stakes aboard the favourite Cape Gentleman for Emmet Mullins who could only manage ninth behind 66/1 shot Ian William’s Reshoon ridden by William Buick, who received an 11-day ban for his use of the whip.

Emmet’s uncle Willie trained the runner-up M C Muldoon, beaten a short head with Ryan Moore up.

In the penultimate Wolferton Stakes the Kevin Ryan trained Juan Elcano, 14/1, was steered to victory by Andrea Atzeni over Joseph O’Brien’s Patrick Sarsfield.

The final race the Copper Horse Stakes, a handicap, was won by Hollie Doyle for the Gosden’s on 33/1 Amtiyaz from another 33/1 shot Dubious Affair. With only two of seven market leaders winning the layers held advantage at the end of the day.

Yesterday there was an international finish to the Queen Mary Stakes as Wesley Ward’s American trained Twilight Gleaming split the Irish trained pair, winner Quick Susie trained by Gavin Cromwell and ridden by Gary Carroll and Fozzy Stack’s Cheerupsleepyjean with Chris Hayes in the saddle. Another

The annual Drive In was held on Monday, June 7th and winners on the day, front 9, were Mary Lawlor, Nuala and Tom Costello. The back 9 went to Jacqueline, Bob and Clement McCormack.

The recent ladies’ 18-hole was won by Olivia Costello with 38 points while Sean Naughton was best of the men on Sunday 6th with 42 points.

Last Sunday’s competition was won by Padraic Cuddy with 42 points while the Jimmy Bruen team had a good win over Rosses Point. The ladies’ Challenge Cup team was unfortunately beaten by a strong Athlone side.

Wesley Ward’s American trained Twilight Gleaming

American trained horse, Artos, was fourth trained by George R Arnold II. In the Queen’s Vase, Charlie Appleby’s Kemari gave William Buick some compensation for yesterday’s disqualification when accounting for the Ballydoyle trained favourite Wordsworth ridden by Ryan Moore by 1½l with the Gosden trained Stowell and Dettori a further 1¼l back in third.

Connections of Stowell had not long to wait for compensation as Indie Angel triumphed at 22/1 in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes for fillies and mares. Lady Bowthorpe and Queen Power filled the minor places. Indie Angel was Dettori’s 75th Royal Ascot winner.

The only Group 1 race of the day, the Prince Of Wales Stakes saw the winning return of Ballydoyle’s super filly Love after a break since winning the Yorkshire Oaks last August. Ryan Moore made most on the filly and finished ¾l and the same in front of Audarya and stablemate Armory ridden by Seamie Heffernan. The filly has won five Group 1 races including the 2020 Guineas and Oaks.

The Royal Hunt Cup was won by Godolphin with the Saeed Bin Suroor’s Real World ridden by Marco Ghiani claiming 3lbs from Astro King and Grove Ferry.

Twenty-seven went to post in the Windsor Castle Stakes and Chipotle got the better of Big Dog and Boonie in the resulting cavalry charge.

The Gosden trained 5/6 favourite, Stradivarius, will take on 12 rivals in today’s Gold Cup. Frankie Dettori takes the rides as the horse attempts a record-equalling fourth win in the race. Aidan O’Brien has three in the field, Serpentine with Ryan Moore, Santiago with Seamie Heffernan and Amhran Na Bhfiann Wayne Lordan. O’Brien’s

sons each have one runner Donnacha has Emperor Of The Sun and Joseph Twilight Payment. There is one other Irish trained Princess Zoe represents Tony Mullins. Difficult to oppose the favourite but for an e/w bet Princess Zoe is worth considering.

Tomorrow, the Ballydoyle trained classic winners Mother Earth, Newmarket 1000 Guineas, and Empress Josephine, Curragh 1000 Guineas, face up to each other in the 13-runner Coronation Stakes. O’Brien’s sons Joseph and Donnacha will be in opposition respectively with Pretty Gorgeous, seventh in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and Shale, also a top-class two-year-old who finished fifth in a Guineas trial in April. Jessica Harrington runs a 50/1 shot Oodnadata ridden by Shane Foley. The home defence will be headed

by Primo Bacio for Ed Walker, having won a York Listed heat by a cosy three lengths.

Joseph gives Dettori the leg up and might just prove the Guineas run was just a hiccup, to win from Ryan Moore on Mother Earth.

On Saturday, there are 16 left in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes with only one Irish challenger Adrian McGuinness’s Harry’s Bar at 25/1. The home team are headed by Ed Walker’s Starman who will have to improve on his only defeat here in a Group 1 with Oisin Murphy booked. He has won on his only run since returning after a 207 day absence at York.

Racing News Long serving Simon Claisse is to step down from his role as Cheltenham clerk at the end of 2021. Claisse first began working at the track in 1999 and has since overseen 20 Cheltenham Festivals.

Sean O’Laoide won the men’s singles Stableford on Monday, June 7th with 41 points while Michael Doyle was victorious in the competition on June 9th with 42.

The Mid West Mowers Singles Stroke was won by Patrick Kenny and P. Ryan was best of the AWGS society on June 10th.

In the ladies’ competitions, Brid Kenny won the Bank Holiday Open with 40 points, Kathleen Shaw was first in the 18-hole Stableford with 42, Lily O’Sullivan won the 9-hole competition, and Kathleen McDonnell was the winner of the 97 Club 12-hole.

Owenbeg last Saturday when Derry inflicted a 15-point defeat on Johnny Keane’s men thus relegating them to Division 3A for 2022. They must now try to pick up the pieces ahead of the Christy Ring Cup campaign in a few weeks’ time.

Cathal Dolan was once again Roscommon’s main man, scoring ten points from

frees and play but it was the home side who took control early on with Cormac O’Doherty and John Mullan very impressive up front for the Oak Leaf County.

By half-time, it was 0-13 to 0-5 for the home side and they sealed their comprehensive victory in the 55th minute when Gerard Bradley scored a fine goal.

The outstanding Nerney with a goal and a series of points from an impressive attack saw Laois come good after a breath-taking match.

Both sides were intent on playing attacking football and it was end-to-end throughout.

Anna Healy had an early goal for Laois but Roscommon hit back immediately when Joanne Cregg took advantage of a miscue from Laois netminder Eimear Barry.

Laura Fleming just before the first break in play and was another quality effort.

Laois replied with their second goal of the game in the second quarter when Erone Fitzpatrick blasted to the roof of the net and when Mo Nerney found the bottom corner of Helena Cummins’ net for another green flag it helped Laois into a four point half-time lead.

Roscommon started the second half as they did the first, on the front foot. Aisling Hanly flicked a long ball into the net and shortly afterwards Diane O’Hora’s charges had their fourth goal through Natalie McHugh.

Things really started to unravel for Laois when Jenny Higgins added a point and Fleming grabbed her second goal to

move Roscommon seven points clear, 5-8 to 3-7, at the second water break.

Heading into the final quarter, the Rossies look set for a league final appearance, Mo Nerney had other ideas however and her goal began a Laois revival which saw them run out threepoint winners.

A disappointing end to a promising Roscommon league campaign and now attention turns to the championship next month.

However, it was Tyrone who led at the break after a well-taken goal from Nicola McNulty gave them a 1-7 to 0-9 interval advantage. But Roscommon were excellent after the break and once Leah Rowe blasted to the net in the 39th minute they took control of proceedings. Late points from Rebecca Brennan and Sinead O’Brien sealed the win.

Sinking feeling returns after failed Orchard raid Armagh defeat sends Cunningham’s charges back to Division 2 < SEAMUS DUKE

It was a familiar tale of woe for the Roscommon senior footballers last Sunday at the Athletic Grounds in Armagh as they slipped back down to Division Two following a very disappointing performance against the Orchard County.

Speaking at the full-time whistle, Roscommon manager, Anthony Cunningham, admitted his side had lost their way after an impressive first quarter.

“It makes it harder to take, the fact that we were going very well in the first quarter and then to see how it finished up. I don’t think that’s a true reflection of our form but we have to face the music now. The positive thing is that we played at a very high level for a quarter of the match but it went wrong after that,” he said.

“The game is over now but we will have to learn massively from what happened here today ahead of the big game against Galway in three weeks’ time”.

The Roscommon manager insisted, however, that relegation to Division Two wasn’t the end of the world for his charges.

“It’s not a massive blow. We performed well in a lot of the games and today was disappointing and we will have to react to that. But there is a reaction in this group of players and we have shown that before. The big thing for us over the past year is to banish the poor performance we had against Mayo in the championship last year. We are determined to put that record straight on the 4th of July,” he said.

“We have looked at a lot of players in this league and some have picked up great experience. We have a few knocks and niggles after today but we should be ready on all fronts for July 4th. We are back training this week and we really only have two weeks’ preparation left ahead of the Galway match,” he concluded.

On a warm cloudy day and in front of a crowd of 500 (and about 50 Roscommon supporters) it was Anthony Cunningham’s team who started the better, as they tore into the home side in the opening quarter. Points from Conor Cox (mark), Diarmuid Murtagh and three from the excellent Ciaráin Murtagh (1 free) saw the visitors ahead by four points inside the opening quarter.

kicked a point in the 16th minute there didn’t seem to be too much for Roscommon to be worried about, but after the first water break the complexion of the game changed completely.

Rian O’Neill kicked a great score, and almost immediately, Jemar Hall flashed over two more points and

the scores were level. Roscommon were beginning to struggle and there was more to come from the home side. The outstanding O’Neill kicked a great mark over from 40 metres in the 27th minute and from the kick out, Colm Lavin’s pass was fumbled by Richard Hughes and the home side punished the

error clinically with Oisin O’Neill blasting to the net.

Hughes was taken off and his replacement Niall Daly kicked a long-range point before half-time.

Having played with the strong breeze in the opening half, Roscommon were behind at the interval - 1-7 to 0-7 - and the home side

were given a standing ovation by their supporters as they made their way to the dressing rooms.

The second half was controlled

by Kieran McGeeney’s men, who were far more direct than Roscommon. The visitors did enjoy a fair amount of possession, but with very little in the way of penetration.

In contrast, Armagh’s movement was superb and Rian O’Neill, Stefan Campbell, Rory Grugan and Andrew Murnin led their effort as the scores piled up.

Conor Cox kicked a couple of good scores for Roscommon as team management emptied the bench but at no stage did it look like Armagh’s lead might be in any real danger.

The teams met last October in the league at the same venue when Roscommon were the impressive winners. This time around the tables were turned and it’s clear that Armagh are a rapidly improving side while it would sadly appear that Roscommon are going in the opposite direction.

This Roscommon team has given supporters and the people of the county some great days over the past five years and we can only hope that there are still more to come.

However, the challenge against Galway in the championship on July the 4th now looms large on the horizon. This performance would not be good enough to win that game. A huge improvement is needed in the coming weeks.
