Temporary Business Energy Support Scheme (TBESS)

Please explain the Temporary Business Energy Support Scheme (TBESS). What is it, who qualifies and how can I avail of it if I am entitled?

The Temporary Business Energy Support Scheme (TBESS) was introduced by the Government to help businesses cope with rising energy costs. The scheme will be available to tax compliant businesses that are chargeable to a designated tax category. TBESS was initially put in place to help struggling businesses with energy costs incurred from 1st September 2022 until 28th February, 2023.

The TBESS Scheme when initially introduced was quite restrictive. However, a number of enhancements have been made as follows:

• the extension of the scheme to 31 July 2023.

• an increase in the monthly limit on payments for claim periods from 1 March 2023 onwards.

• the €10,000 monthly limit on payments under the scheme has been increased to €15,000 per qualifying business.

• the €30,000 monthly limit has been increased to €45,000 per qualifying business in cases where the qualifying business operates across multiple locations.

• a reduction of the energy costs threshold from 50% to 30%, with effect from 1 September 2022.

• an increase in the Temporary Business Energy Payment (TBEP) amount from 40% to 50% of a business’ eligible costs from 1 March 2023.

• an extension of the time limit for all claims to 30 September 2023.

This scheme is operated on a self-assessment basis and administered by the Revenue Commissioners. A step-by-step guide on how to register and make a claim on Revenue’s Online Service.

Rents in Roscommon continue to spiral

Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has called for emergency action to reduce rents in Roscommon’s private rental sector as the latest Daft.ie figures show an increase of almost 23 per cent in the county in the last 12 months.

Kerrane urged the Government to ban rent increases for all existing and new tenancies for three year, and to put a full month’s rent pack into every private tenant’s pocket.

“New average rents in Roscommon now stand at a staggering €1,203,” she said.

“This is totally unaffordable for people on ordinary salaries in Roscommon. It’s clear that the Government has totally lost control of the housing market. Meanwhile, ordinary people in Roscommon are left paying the price for these failures”.

Families urged to register for free GP visit cards

Families in Roscommon are being encouraged to register for free GP visit cards for children aged six and seven following an expansion of the scheme this week. Local Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy said: “I’m delighted that my party colleague Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has expanded free GP care to under 8s. Families can register their children aged 6 and 7 for their GP visit card.

“Fianna Fáil in Government is committed to making healthcare more affordable for families. This is one of a number of measures that our party while in Government has introduced to make sure that that cost is not a barrier to children accessing healthcare. This move will undoubtedly be of huge benefit to children and their families”.

This expansion of free GP care to children aged six and seven is the first stage of the expansion in eligibility for GP care without charges under the GP Agreement 2023. It will be followed by the expansion of free GP care to people earning up to the median income in September and November this year.

Grounds for optimism following cricket officials’ visit

Roscommon Cricket Club members have said they were satisfied following a recent visit by officials from Cricket Ireland and the Connacht Cricket Union to St Coman’s Park in Roscommon town with a view to establishing a playing pitch at the former GAA venue.

Head of Facilities and Operations at Cricket Ireland, Richard Fahey, and Connacht Cricket Union Chairman, Jeff Smith, met with club officials and members of Roscommon County Council recently after it was confirmed Roscommon Cricket Club had secured a six-year lease of the venue, which is known locally as ‘The Lough’.

Club Director, Abin George, said the meeting had been very constructive despite the fact that the ground is currently waterlogged.

“The visit went really well and they were impressed with the ground even though it is flooded at the moment because you can see there is a great space there,” he said.

Cricket officials confirmed during the visit that they would seek a feasibility study of ‘The Lough’ to ascertain

whether a playing surface can be developed there.

“Hopefully the study goes well because they are very keen to do something here,” Mr George said.

“It would be good for the promotion and development of the game in Roscommon. Roscommon County Council have also said they would do whatever they could to help us. We are very happy with all the support”.

Head of Facilities and Operations at Cricket Ireland, Richard Fahey, said he was delighted that the game was taking off in Roscommon town.

“We’re happy to support any club when it comes to the development of its facilities. Obviously, the club is also very happy with the lease of the site here from Roscommon County Council. We believe it’s unusual for the ground to be flooded at this time of year but for the club to thrive, a substantial amount of work is needed,” he said.

Mr Fahey said there were local examples of playing surfaces being developed on flood-affected sites, and that a feasibility study would determine the next steps.

“Once we have the results of

that study, we’ll know what direction to take, whether it’s finding the funds to developing the site here or going back to square one. But we will certainly pull out all the stops to try and help the club to establish itself,” he said.

The visit by officials came amid confirmation that Roscommon Cricket Club has now been accepted as a member of the Connacht Cricket Union.

Club Director Matthew Augustine said members were “delighted” with the news and were now looking forward to working with the union.

Chairperson of Connacht Cricket Union, Jeff Smith, said the union was eager to develop the game in Roscommon town.

“I’m very, very keen because we need a spread of clubs throughout the province. We need new blood but most of all we need a new pitch. At the moment, we only have County Galway Cricket Club which is currently hosting five clubs,” he said.

“Fortunately, Ballaghaderreen can play their matches on a space between two soccer pitches at the Community Sports Park”.

Mr Smith said he was confident further facilities would be developed in Ballina and Kilconnell, and that Roscommon wouldn’t be too far behind.

“The guys here are very keen and they have their structures in place. I would encourage them to get on the pitch and play even if that means playing away from home for now.

I’m convinced that after talking to the local authority that they are going to get them a ground. If they’re not playing in Roscommon town next year, they will be the following year,” he concluded

Carnival committee ‘reaches settlement’ with Wild Youth over concert controversy

< DAN DOONER

The Ballygar Carnival committee confirmed last week that a settlement had been reached with Dublin band Wild Youth following controversy around the group’s headline performance at the event.

In a statement posted on social media on Thursday last, the committee

confirmed the settlement following “professional negotiations” with the band’s management.

As reported in last week’s Roscommon People, Wild Youth arrived late for the concert from a prior performance in Cork before playing a shortened 50-minute set.

The committee said it was “very disappointed” that the stage time

and set length were not adhered to as per the band’s pre-agreed contract.

“We also accept that we, the committee, did not do enough to ensure a secure and safe stage area during setup and performance,” the committee added.

According to the committee, Wild Youth “offered to perform a free

event in Ballygar as a gesture of goodwill, but unfortunately it was agreed that it was not logistically possible to make that happen”. In a social media message on Friday morning last, the Eurovision performers apologised for arriving late to the stage, and said they were “deeply sorry to anyone who bought a ticket and felt let down”.

Creating ‘slate’ art in Ballaghaderreen

Ballaghaderreen Community Art Group recently completed a project which combined their artistic talents and sustainability to add yet more colour and fun to the town’s Community Gar-

den. The group painted some old slates before constructing stands and installing their artwork in the garden.

Community Art Group member Yolanda van Herk said the two groups first col-

laborated during Covid-19 when artists were accommodated at the garden’s polytunnel. She added that the art group was delighted to give something back to the popular local garden.

As part of our commitment to promoting golf for girls, Roscommon Golf Club are excited to announce we are holding a free session for girls to come and try the game of golf on Monday 21st August at 10.30am. Why should girls try golf? It’s fun, you’ll make new friends, learn new skills, be a part of a team and it’s social. Research shows that some of the barriers to girls playing golf include the following; there are no other girls that play, they don’t like playing in front of boys, there are too many rules and regulations etc.

Roscommon Golf Club are proactive in breaking down these barriers and provide an inclusive, encouraging and supportive environment for girls to flourish and learn the game of golf.

We are delighted to have our PGA Club Professional, Philip Murphy leading the get in to golf session for girls on Monday 21st from 10.30am-11.30am.

Girls Junior Convenor, Anne Quirke and other club volunteers will also be on site to answer questions.

Signing up for this amazing free session is simple, to secure your place simply call Anne on 086 2412441

Open to ages 5-17 and we encourage you to bring a friend.

Jacinta’s Smile sisters take on ‘3 Peaks Challenge’

Sisters Charlotte, Aishleen and Katie-Anne O’Toole are preparing to take on a ‘3 Peaks Challenge’ on Sunday, August 27th in a bid to raise much-needed funds for their Jacinta’s Smile Sibling Bereavement Support charity.

Jacinta’s Smile, named in memory of the siblings’ late sister Jacinta O’Toole (30), who sadly passed away in 2016, operates under the umbrella of Vita House, providing support to children and young adults who have been affected by the death of a sibling.

The O’Toole sisters have tragically lost three siblings in both childhood and adulthood and describe the charity as “run by bereaved siblings, for bereaved siblings”.

“We have the lived experience and wisdom in how this may be for the children and young adults that we support,” Charlotte O’Toole explains.

“We know that grief is as individual as a fingerprint. One size does not fit all so we provide a mix of group and individual support. We offer both peer support and one to one play therapy or psychotherapy with accredited, experienced and qualified therapists and counsellors, “Nationwide. Our therapists also partake in training through Jacinta’s Smile which offers a unique insight into sibling bereavement.

“Our Adventure Days are impactful and fun, providing peer support to children and young adults with space to organically process their emotions and feel hope.

“The impact of meeting others that understand your level of grief as a child is difficult to convey but our testimonials are compel-

Commenting ahead of the show, Chairman Frank Collevy said: “This mammoth show day production is aimed principally at families with young children, and all children will be admitted free of charge, while the adult charge of €10 per person hasn’t changed for almost 15 years.

“We have a remarkable entry of the finest pedigree cattle from all over the West of Ireland which will climax with the holding of the Connaught Pedigree Male Calf Championship with a prize

fund of €1,000”.

Chief Cattle Steward Tom Finnerty added: “Most of the top-class continental cattle breeds will be on show as will ordinary commercial cattle together with some rare breeds such as Dexter, Kerry and Irish Moiled”.

For sheep farmers, Mountbellew Show Society has been honoured again to hold the AllIreland Ewe Lamb Competition, with Chief Sheep Steward Rita Hughes also providing the commentary.

Vice-Chairman Sean O’Neill commented: “Mountbellew Show has always prided itself on the quality of horses on show but this year a new exciting addition will be the pony riding and hunter riding competitions, which no doubt will inspire many young people to take up horse riding in the future”.

The Children’s Corner, now a huge feature of Mountbellew Show, has once again increased its range of activities, and this year will include Daisy the Cow, Foot Pool, Pony Riding, face

painting and as Chief Steward Phil Keating says: “Parents can have confidence in the safety measures taken to ensure even the youngest child will feel happy and content while there is no cost involved whatsoever”.

A special feature this year is the Fastest Family Competition, which has provided much amusement and enjoyment when a team of four competitors (one of whom must be female) tries their hand at milking a cow, throwing rings, tossing the wellington and, for the first time in the competition, competing in a game of foot pool. All teams will run with a heavy log as seen on the television programme ‘Ireland’s Fittest Family’.

Secretary Dympna Naughton says entries are coming in thick and fast.

“The latest date for entries is this Saturday, August 19th. Entries should be sent to the Show Secretary, Mountbellew Agricultural Show, C/O Galway Telework Co-Op, Mountbellew, Co Galway, H53 TN67 or online via www.mountbellewagrishow.ie”

Racing returns to Roscommon Race Course next Tuesday

Racing continues to thrive in the west of Ireland, and we had a huge crowd here at our last fixture on August 8th and we are looking forward to welcoming our patrons back for our next fixture, which takes place on Tuesday, August 22nd.

The Flat Jockey’s Championship has been an intriguing battle all year. Colin Keane, Billy Lee, Ryan Moore along with Gary Carroll have been battling it out over the last few months and all four could be in action here next week. A feature of our fixtures here this season has been the competitive nature of the racing and now that we are into the second half of the flat campaign, we expect full fields here next week.

We have what could be an interesting winner’s race, which al-

ways attracts some smart horses.

Helvic Dream won a similar race here in 2019 and he went onto win a Group 1 at The Curragh.

With the children almost ready to go back to school, you can bring them all to Roscommon, as we are putting on a wide range of free entertainment courtesy of Londis as part of our Family Evening.

We’d like to thank our other sponsors on the day which include Abbey House Coffee Bar Ltd, The Irish EBF, Murray Ambulance Services, Londis Roscommon, Connolly Red Mills and The Cleary Family.

The latter of course sponsor our last race on the day which remembers Sean Cleary, who died 20 years ago at Galway. Sean’s son, Sean Cleary Farrell, has made a bright start to his riding career and

is based with Willie Mullins.

The best turned out prizes are sponsored by Casey Lawnmowers, Fuerty, Co Roscommon

As usual there will be music in the bar after the second last race. Admission tickets and Ros Special tickets can be purchased online at www.roscommonracecourse.ie.

There is a 10 per cent discount on admission tickets online. Cash and card payments are accepted at the gate.

A list of remaining fixtures and all other information, which includes ticket information, can be found on our website roscommonracecourse.ie. Enquiries: contact@ roscommonracecourse.ie or phone 087-2203288.

Come for the racing, stay for the craic!

New Grow support group meeting in Roscommon

For so many of us, the challenges we face every day can become overwhelming; job stress, loneliness, anxiety, depression, grief, family struggles can make us feel like we are on our own.

An Irish charity called Grow Mental Health has been providing safe, confidential spaces for anyone who finds themselves in this position for over 50 years now.

Grow holds weekly peer support groups run by people with lived experience of mental health challenges. Meetings provide the space for people to share and learn about new ways to support themselves and others. They also provide a community of peers who understand. Grow extends beyond the meetings, too. Groups often meet up for coffee, country walks, movie clubs, weekend retreats, and much more.

No introductions or referrals are

required. New members are warmly welcomed by the group and are not expected to participate in any way other than to observe the proceedings and experience being fully accepted and valued just for being themselves. They are open to everybody over eighteen years of age and they run for about two hours. Each meeting includes a cup of tea and biscuit and a chat. People come to Grow for different reasons. Some come to find hope or to have access to the support of their fellow members. Others wish to develop their own personal resources and to develop ways to overcome problems. Whatever their reasons for coming, members will become part of a community of peers and will establish true and lasting friendships. They will be guided through a twelve-step recovery programme by others who

have travelled the journey before them.

Our meetings are anonymous, non-denominational, non-judgemental, and open to all at no cost. Our peer support groups are run by members, for members. They are structured so we can have a blend of problem solving, reading of literature and healthy discussion.

Many new members talk about how they find it so difficult to talk to family, friends, or work colleagues about their problems. In our meetings, things are different. So why not take a closer look at Grow to understand how our programme of growth and recovery might be right for you?

Meetings continue on Wednesdays in REGARI Recovery College, Athlone Road, Roscommon. For more information, call or text Antoinette on 086-1659277.

Post-Civil War period in Roscommon 100 years ago

Shooting of Commandant Thomas ‘Toby’ Mannion

A hundred years ago this week, one of the last Republican casualties of the Civil War period in County Roscommon died as a result of being shot and captured in August 1923.

Thomas Mannion was born on January 5th, 1900 to parents Thomas and Sarah Mannion (nee McManus), and their place of residence was at the Hill of Berries, (Barrybeg) Athlone, County Roscommon.

There were a total of eight children in the family; five sons and three daughters.

The Mannions were members of the farming community in the Barrybeg/ Kiltoom area of south Roscommon.

Thomas or ‘Toby’, as he was affectionately known, was the sixth child in the family and after he left school he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1917. He became part of Kiltoom Com-

pany that was attached to the 3rd Battn. Athlone Brigade. Toby was an active member of the volunteers in the greater Athlone area during the years 1920/1921. He was later appointed a commandant. The presence of the large British army military post in Athlone town was a hindrance to IRA activity during the period of the Troubles; nevertheless Toby took part in many actions against Crown forces including the disarming of two British army sentries near the military barracks in the town.

After the Treaty, Toby took the Republican AntiTreaty position and became Director of Transport for the Athlone Brigade.

In March 1923, Toby and a few other Republicans were arrested and lodged in the Athlone military barracks. The military barracks had been used as a detention centre by the British army during the Troubles and was now occupied by the Free State army who also used it as a place of imprisonment.

When he was taken there, an escape plan was being hatched by other prisoners and Toby, because of his local knowledge, was included in the plot. The escape of six prisoners including Mannion and Thomas Maguire, who was commanding officer of the 2nd Western Division IRA at the time, took place on June 10th, 1923. The group escaped, two at a time at intervals of a few minutes. After their escape they split up and headed in different directions across fields and through country lanes. Tom Maguire got

away safely and back to his native Mayo and was elected a TD for the constituency of South Mayo/ South Roscommon in the general election of August 1923.

Prior to the Athlone escape, the ceasefire and dump-arms order of IRA chief of staff Frank Aiken in May had ended the Civil War in Ireland. However, Toby Mannion and other Republicans remained on the run as the Free State Government continued in pursuit of anti-treaty activists. Mannion had responsibility for the collecting and storing of arms and ammunition belonging to the Republican forces in the aftermath of the dumparms order of May 24 1923.

Later that year, on August 2nd, Mannion and another comrade, Thomas Martin, were leaving Carbery’s house in the village of Kiltoom, when they were spotted by a Free State army patrol. The soldiers recognised Mannion and opened fire on him. He was hit and wounded by gunfire and tried to escape up a laneway. The patrol followed and found him lying on the roadside; he was bleeding and was badly injured. The other man that was with him, Thomas Martin, escaped across the fields.

Toby Mannion had been hit in the abdomen; he was taken first to the Athlone military hospital, but was later transferred to St Bricin’s Hospital in Dublin. His injury proved fatal and he died there on August 16th, 1923. The inquest into his death on August 17th, reported that he

had died of Peritonitis following a gunshot wound of the abdomen which perforated the intestines caused by a bullet fired by a revolver. The report concluded with the comment: ‘In our opinion a case of inadvertency’. Commandant Mannion’s remains were later brought home to Athlone and he was buried in Kiltoom old cemetery. At his funeral, Commandant-General Tom Maguire TD, who had been incarcerated in Athlone and escaped with Mannion, came to deliver an oration over the grave. In the course of his address, a convoy of Free State troops were detected approaching the cemetery. Immediately, Maguire, a wanted man was whisked away from the cemetery and brought to a safe house in Ardmullen, where he lay low until the troops had vacated the area.

In 1924, an impressive Celtic cross monument was erected at the roadside in Barrybeg near to where Commandant Mannion was shot and captured. The unveiling of the monument by Commandant Maguire, took place on August 17th, almost exactly a year to the

day of Mannion’s death. When the unveiling ceremony ended, the assembled party marched the four-mile journey from Barrybeg to Kiltoom cemetery where Mannion was buried. A wreath-laying took place and again Tom Maguire; TD for the constituency of South Mayo/ South Roscommon, delivered an address to the gathered crowd. When he had finished, eight young men stepped forward and produced revolvers intending to fire a volley over the grave. Immediately a whistle blast was heard and the cemetery was suddenly surrounded by Free State troops. The soldiers advanced to the grave and arrested six people, including Toby Mannion’s brother John, but he was released later. In a followup search a number of firearms were recovered in the graveyard. The civil war had ended in the spring of 1923, so Toby Mannion was one of the last casualties of that conflict to die three months after the cease-fire order of May 24th.

Commemoration to mark killing of Thomas ‘Toby’ Mannion this Sunday

A centenary commemoration will take place at 1 pm this Sunday, August 20th, to mark 100 years since the killing in action of Kiltoom Republican Thomas ‘Toby’ Mannion at the Hill of Berries.

Roscommon Sinn Féin will hold an event at the Republican Celtic Cross monument on the east side of the Hill of Berries, about two miles from Athlone on the main Roscommon Road, where Toby Mannion was fatally wounded from a gunshout to the stomach by a Free State soldier on August 14th, 1923, passing away two days later in St. Bricin’s Hospital,

Dublin.

Guest Speaker on the day will be Roscommon County Councillor Michael Mulligan while the event will be chaired by Joe Harney from Drum. Wreaths will be laid in memory of Toby and the Roscommon Republican Roll of Honour will be read as well as the Easter 1916 Proclamation.

Speaking in advance of the commemorative event, Joe Harney of Roscommon Sinn Féin encouraged members of the public to attend on the day: “When Toby Mannion passed away on August 16th, 1923, he became the final

Roscommon Republican to be killed in action as a result of the Civil War, in many ways marking the end of the conflict in Roscommon.

“Toby was a particularly active IRA Volunteer in the region from 1918 through the Black and Tan War, the Truce Period and into the Civil War on the Republican side. He played a key role in the Kiltoom Company and later in the Athlone Battalion where he served as Vice Commandant as well as being a respected member of the Athlone Flying Column that was active around South West-

meath and South Roscommon during the period.

“We are holding this centenary event at the Celtic Cross monument on the east side of the Hill of Berries near the spot where he was shot and mortally wounded by a Free State soldier.

“The cross was erected in August 1924 on Toby’s first anniversary and is an impressive historical monument in its own right. Everyone is welcome to join us in remembering this great man and honouring the Mannion family who stood by the Republic at this difficult time in our history”.

FRANK BRANDON

FRANK BRANDON’S unique take on life ...

IRFU must tackle rising ticket prices!

Our man Frank on the IRFU’s ticket prices, Creggs’ date with ‘Pride of Place’ destiny, the need for international support for wildfire-ravaged Hawaii, and running, walking or cycling for a very good cause…

You will know by now that I have a huge interest in all types of sport, and I am more than grateful for all the excitement and enjoyment that it has brought me down through the years. Having said that, I also feel that the big sporting organisations are more interested these days in making money than they are in looking after the welfare of supporters and members. This time around, it’s not the GAA I have in my sights. Though I am still angry at their decision to take away the 50 per cent OAP discount for local championship matches. For a cashstrapped pensioner on a fixed income, it still amounts to quite a substantial penalty. For a wealthy organisation such as the GAA, surely the reinstatement of this discount is not too much

to ask?

As it happens, I did send an email to Croke Park some time ago, perhaps now that the championship has finished for another year, they might get a chance to respond? I won’t hold my breath!

No, this time around my ire is directed at the IRFU (the rugby crowd), who seem to be charging the exact same prices for tickets for next Saturday’s World Cup warm-up game against England as they would for a Six Nations game!

One fellow I met the other day told me that he wanted to bring his 16-year-old son to the match but was appalled when he was quoted €120 each for their tickets. He said that by the time he travelled to Dublin, had a

bit to eat, and watched the game, he would have little change left out of €400.

The IRFU describes Saturday’s game as being part of the ‘Summer Series’, but the truth is it is still just a warmup game ahead of the World Cup. Of course any game against England will come with a bit more of an edge than any other ‘friendly warm-up’ but I still maintain that prices should be cut to reflect the nature of the match.

As it happens, tickets for last week’s Italian game were much cheaper and so too are the tickets for the upcoming Samoan game. Why not the England game? There are no World Cup Pool points or trophies up for grabs so €120 is a bit of a ‘high tackle’.

On the same note, last weekend saw

Apocalyptic scenes in beautiful Hawaii

One of the programmes that I watch regularly is the new Magnum PI series, and most weeks I would simply watch the action and pass no heed at all on things like the scenery and the surroundings.

However, the series is filmed in Hawaii, which, as we know, is now being ravaged by wildfires. So, when in this week’s episode, Higgins went off in TC’s helicopter to the island of Maui (both characters in the programme) my interest immediately picked up. Maui has been hardest hit by

the fires, and the scenes we see on television are bordering on apocalyptical.

Meanwhile, everything in the town of Lahaina has been totally wiped out and as I looked at the gorgeous scenic pictures of the island on the television programme, it was hard to believe that anything could bring about so much devastation to such a beautiful area.

Sometimes it’s hard to take in some of the stuff we see on TV, like the appalling floods in China, the unnaturally high temperatures in Europe, the

devastation of the wildfires in many areas, but especially Hawaii, and the damage earthquakes, tornados, tsunamis and hurricanes can bring.

The only conclusion I can come to is that we are so lucky to live here in Ireland. It would be better if the turf wasn’t still in the bog, of course, but at least it’s not under threat from wildfires. Anyway, our hearts go out to those poor Hawaiian people who have literally lost everything. Hopefully they will get all the help they need from the international community.

Let the ‘Pride of Place’ judging commence!

The Pride of Place awards are running for over 21 years now, and this year the big winners will be feted at a big gala dinner at the Armagh City Hotel on Friday, November 10th.

The Pride of Place Awards is an AllIreland competition that acknowledges and celebrates the work local communities are doing all over the island of Ireland.

Our own little village, Creggs, has been nominated by Galway County

Council as the county’s entry in the Biodiversity and Climate Action section of the awards. The judges visited Creggs yesterday (Wednesday), where, among other things, they were shown a 20-minute presentation on all that is currently happening in the village before going walkabout and seeing the great work that is being done in terms of biodiversity and climate action.

Members of the public were also to go along to Creggs National School and

give the judges an opportunity to meet the local people.

Now, having driven round the place over the last few days, I have come to the realisation that it really doesn’t matter whether we win or lose. What matters is the pride our community takes in Creggs. As I watched myriads of people, both young and old, cleaning and tidying the village in recent days, it also made me realise that the results won’t impact on the effort the community has

the annual influx of ‘horsey’ people too Dublin for the International Horse Show at the RDS with huge crowds in attendance for the event.

My two-year-old granddaughter was there with family on the Friday and I have to say the €18 entrance fee for her seems a little excessive. God be with the days when, no matter what you were attending, young children were simply lifted up on their parents’ shoulders and carried in at no cost at all!

Anyway, I suppose all these organisations know that people will attend no matter what in many cases and so can charge what they like, But greed is never a good thing no matter where you come across it, and those three examples smack of greed to me.

Local concert for Heritage Week

It promises to be a busy week in Creggs, because as part of Heritage Week there will be a big concert in the school hall on Friday evening, August 18th, when local musician Colm Naughton will, accompanied by Orlaith Keane, take to the stage for a special musical performance. Colm is a noted banjo player, and also plays several other instruments while Orlaith is a well-known singer from the famous Caherlistrane Keane family of entertainers and she has featured on a number of her father, Matt’s albums in recent years.

Tickets can be purchased in O’Rourke’s Spar, priced at €20, and doors open at 8 pm with the show kicking off at 8.30 pm. You are all asked to come along to a very special night’s entertainment in the village and to experience the very best of Ireland’s musical talent.

And finally…

put in in order to showcase the wonderful place Creggs is to live in.

Don’t get me wrong…it would be great if we were to win! It would also be a proper acknowledgment of the commitment of all the volunteers, and the fact that so many locals put their shoulders to the wheel. But I can honestly say that Creggs has never looked as splendid as it does now, and win or lose, all of those involved have shown to the world what ‘Pride of Place’ is all about.

Don’t forget the big fundraising day taking place this Sunday for the Athleague/Tremane Defibrillator Group and I ask you all to try to join in the activities and help such a great cause. You can cycle, walk or swim or even stand on your head, but, whatever you do, give a donation to help with the wonderful work the group does!

Our top 5 ‘Back to School’ tips!

The return to school is now just a few short weeks away and, whether you have a child just starting in national school or a young scholar moving into second-level education, here at the Roscommon People we have compiled a list of our top 5 tips that may help with the transition out of the summer slump…

Re-establish a ‘school’ routine

Getting back into a school sleep schedule won’t happen overnight! A few weeks before

school starts, get your child into the habit of going to bed earlier. Establishing a consistent routine is important for kids as they prepare for their return to school.

Encourage independence

Children who play an active role in preparing for back to school –such as choosing and organising school supplies and new clothes – are more likely to get excited about going back to school, which in turn eases their jitters. Daily, age-appropriate tasks will help your child gain independence and confidence.

Talk about first-week nerves

Reassure your child that being nervous is natural – even for teachers. Discuss the scenarios that worry them and let them express their fears. Perhaps offer stories of your own first-day jitters when you were a child to help them realise that you know what they are going through.

Family Fun Day with South Roscommon FRC!

South Roscommon Family Resource Centre (SRFRC) is based in Roscommon town, behind Hynes Pharmacy on Castle Street. We are part of the Vita House Services Team, and this year are proud to be celebrating 30 years of Vita House’s support of the community of Roscommon!

The town of Roscommon and its environs has welcomed many families from different countries and cultures over the last few years. Families from countries such as Syria, Slovakia, Latvia, England, Ukraine as well as many others have joined the community recently, and we are pleased to include them in our activities.

We are delighted once again to have been successful in our application to the Community Integration Fund, and we will hold our second Intercultural Family Fun Day in Roscom-

mon Community Sports Park, this Saturday, August 19th from 1 pm to 4 pm.

Activities will include football skills with Roscommon GAA, Tag Rugby with Creggs Rugby Club, soccer skills with Roscommon United Soccer Club, Camogie with Roscommon Camogie, Arts & Crafts with Bitsy and Bobsy Art Club, fun games with Roscommon Sports Partnership, dancing, face painting with Fierce Fun Faces, Quiet Space, and food samples from around the world.

Roscommon Young Carers

Project will be celebrating the fantastic achievement of being announced as national finalists in the National Lottery Good Causes Awards 2023. This project has gone from strength to strength over the past three years, and has seen young people from all over the county,

Early Back-to-School Shopping

Back-to-school planning can sometimes feel like a marathon race, but getting your shopping done early can help alleviate some of that stress. Shopping early also gives you a more comprehensive selection of items, avoids last-minute rushes, and ensures that your child gets eve-

rything they need before their first day. Remember to involve your child in the process as this can make them feel excited and prepared for the new school year.

Deal with expectations

Older children will already have set themselves expec-

tations they want to fulfil at school. Therefore, it is helpful to ask them what they expect about returning to school. It is important to ask your children if they have any questions or are unsure about anything so you can help them manage their expectations and reduce any stress

who fulfil any kind of caring role in the home, coming together for fun and respite.

This award is for just one of the fantastic projects the group worked on, The Art of Caring, which saw participants learn Creative Writing, Virtual Reality, Music Production, Song Writing, Textiles, Animation, Manga, and Photography.

The project culminated with the group painting a number of murals on the walls of St Coman’s Wood Primary School, representing the importance of caring for ourselves and each other. We’re incredibly proud of this project and all of the young people involved.

We hope you’ll join us for this FREE event at the Community Sports Park in Lisnamult on Saturday – pack up a picnic and bring the family along –there’ll be fun for all ages!

Childline makes ‘Smart Moves’ ahead of back to school rush

Childline understands that for some children and their parents, the return to education can be a daunting prospect so to help those with worries ahead of the busy ‘back to school’ period, ISPCC has launched a new free service called ‘Smart Moves’.

In recognising the challenges and anxiety around the transition from primary to secondary education, Smart Moves, is an evidence-based programme aimed at fifth and sixth class pupils.

There is also a secondary school programme which supports young people as they begin their journey in secondary school.

Smart Moves is teacher-led and includes short lessons covering topics from friendship to problem-solving to sleep difficulties.

Niamh Clarke of ISPCC says: “Smart Moves is based on the resilience framework and looks to build lifelong coping skills for young people. Having resilience does not mean you will not face

challenges.

“However, it gives ability to endure these challenges and bounce back”.

ISPCC has just launched an Irish-language version of the programme for primary schools.

According to one teacher who was involved in the programme, “it stimulated good conversations”, while another said that the programme was very easy to use, adding that “it encouraged pupils to think about potential

worries, problems and routes of support”.

For the students themselves, completing the Smart Moves programme was an overwhelmingly positive experience and they would recommend that other schools get involved in it.

For more information on the supports ISPCC offers to children and young people, please go to www.ispcc,.ie/smartmoves/.

Level 7 Psychology course at Vita House

Accredited by Maynooth University and run by Vita House, Level 7 Psychology is a certificate level course designed to provide participants with the opportunity to develop an understanding of psychology and to explore its relevance to the individual, family, community, and wider society.

The course draw a wonderful crosssection of people of all ages and from all walks of life. The venue is the Vita House building on Abbey Street in Roscommon town, but the course offers a blended learning experience which means participants can attend classes in person or attend classes on-

line. However, you will be expected to attend Saturday workshops in person. Speaking of their experience of the course, a past student said: “The curriculum was well-structured, delving into a diverse range of psychology subjects such as attachment theory, psychology of the brain, and the fun-

damentals of psychology itself.

“The six Saturday workshops, including topics like grief and loss, inner child exploration, and mindfulness, added practical dimensions to the theoretical knowledge.

“Particularly enriching were the two Saturdays at Maynooth Univer-

sity, which provided valuable insights from a broader academic perspective”.

Over 8,000 local children to benefit from free schoolbooks scheme

More than 8,000 children in Co Roscommon are set to benefit from free schoolbooks, workbooks, and copy books ahead of the new school term, under a new initiative introduced by the Minister of Education Norma Foley.

In total, more than 558,000 pupils enrolled in over 3,230 primary schools, including over 130 special schools, will benefit from the scheme, which, according to the Department of Education, will “significantly ease the financial

Safefood offers advice on back-to-school lunchboxes!

As children prepare to head back to school, Safefood has offered advice on how to help create both nutritious and enjoyable lunchboxes.

Joana da Silva, Chief Specialist in Nutrition at Safefood, emphasises the positive impact of wellbalanced school lunches on children’s concentration and learning abilities. Let’s explore Safefood’s top five tips for preparing healthy and exciting lunchboxes this school year

1 Include all the food groups

Ensure your child’s lunch consists of fruits and vegetables, foods like bread, pasta, and rice, proteins such as meat, beans, pulses, fish, and eggs, and dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese. This diversity promotes a balanced diet and establishes healthy eating habits for life.

2 Vary the kinds of bread

Instead of using plain sliced bread every day, introduce brown bread, pittas, bagels, or wraps for added variety. Keeping a stock of different bread options in the freezer helps reduce food waste.

3 Stay hydrated

Keeping hydrated through-

burden facing families during back to school time”.

Local Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has welcomed the provision of over €770,000 for the scheme in Roscommon.

“This is a landmark moment for Irish education,

and one which will provide significant benefit for families around the country,” he said.

“Back to school time can be a challenging time for parents and families, and I welcome Minister Foley’s commitment to easing the

burden. We in Fianna Fáil believe in the power of education, and we believe in making education truly accessible for all. This is yet another positive step forward, which I wholeheartedly welcome”.

out the day is great for your child’s wellbeing. Given this, they should aim to drink at least eight cups of fluid daily. Milk and plain water are the best drink options. We understand that getting children to drink water can be challenging so perhaps try to infuse it with slices of fruits like lemon, cucumber, or berries for a burst of flavour. Another idea is to consider using brightly coloured bottles or fun containers to make plain water more appealing and interesting.

4 Get them involved

This is an excellent opportunity for them to learn about healthy eating and develop good habits.

If your child is starting school this year, practicing opening and closing their lunchbox in advance can save time and ensure they’re independent during lunch breaks. Trust us, their teacher will appreciate it too.

5 Try new ideas

Introducing new foods to children can be tricky. It often takes several attempts for them to accept unfamiliar items as part of their regular diet. To ease this, try to, experiment with new meal ideas during dinnertime or weekends before including them in the lunchbox.

Roscommon ladies’ choir wants you!

Auditions for Cór Comáin take place on August 31st

Think you can hold a tune?

Looking to meet new people and be part of a talented group?

Well, Cór Comáin, an all-ladies choir based in Roscommon town, might just be for you!

The choir, which features members from Roscommon town and surrounds, is holding open auditions on Thursday, August 31st at the Roscommon Arts Centre. Previous singing/choral experience would be a help but it’s not essential.

According to choir member, Pauline Clarke, the choir has gone from strength to strength in recent years.

“We meet as a group in Roscommon Arts Centre every Thursday from September to

May. In practice we come together to explore beautiful music and breathe life into harmonies. Singing as part of a choir provides so many benefits to our wellbeing. Meeting new people, and being part of a community also adds to our sense of enjoyment,” she said. As well as providing many benefits to existing members, the choir has also given back to the community, so far raising over €10,000 for various charities.

“Learning new pieces, mastering the breathing, and performing for audiences are all part of why we feel proud to be committed members,” Pauline says.

“Travelling to London to sing with the Hannah Brine UK Singers was a real highlight, as was singing in St Patrick’s Ca-

thedral in Armagh as part of the St Patrick’s Day broadcast.

“Every performance is special and when the audience appreciates your efforts it really helps to keep you motivated. Socialising at these events also helps to foster our sense of camaraderie in our group.

“Under the direction of Derek

Mahady, a choral conductor, singer, pianist and music educator, this group has gone from strength to strength. Our membership is a variety of ages and backgrounds, connected through a love of singing”.

Other Cór Comáin members told the Roscommon People how “proud and privileged”

saying he was delighted to see the amount of classes on offer for younger participants.

Those present at the official launch of the 51st Roscommon Industrial and Agricultural Show at Hannon’s Hotel on Thursday night last heard how the event highlights the ‘very best the local agricultural sector has to offer’.

This year’s show takes place at Hannon’s field on the Athlone Road this Saturday from 8 am and will once again boasts some of the best horse and cattle classes in the country, according to local organisers.

Welcoming those to Hannon’s Hotel last Thursday, Show President Christy Tully said the event had survived many challenges over the past five decades and “stood the test of time”.

“This would not have been possible without our hard-working committees,” he said. “There would be no show without the help of our volunteers, sponsors, and exhibitors”.

Mr Tully thanked the Hannon family for the use of the show grounds and hotel, describing the venue as “the best place for a show”.

“I would also like to wish our chairman Damien Hannon and the committee all the best this Saturday, and I hope for a fine day,” he added.

Chairperson Damien Hannon said the event highlighted “the best our agricultural sector has to offer” but that the committee face greater challenges each year to keep the show on the road.

“Year after year, the event becomes a greater challenge for us as the general costs rise and health and safety tightens,” he said before paying tribute to the show com mittee for “putting their shoulders to the wheel” to make it happen.

Mr Hannon thanked the show’s many gen erous sponsors and other backers including: the Irish Shows Association; Department of Rural and Community Development; Department of Agriculture; Horse Sport Ireland; Local Enterprise Board; and Ro scommon County Council.

The Chairperson added that without the show’s numerous sponsors, the event wouldn’t survive each year.

Guest of Honour on the night was Roscommon football captain Brian Stack, who travelled from Dublin to attend the launch. He thanked the committee for the invita-

National Secretary of the Irish Shows Association, Jim Harrison, was also present on the night.

Mr Harrison highlighted the importance of youth involvement,

He added that the show was an important social outlet for many people in rural areas and that State funding was vital in keeping the events going nationwide.

Mr Harrison said sustainabil-

ity “was the way to go” and that shows would soon feature ‘sustainability villages’ more prominently.

He also encouraged the Roscommon committee to invite the likes of Bord Bia, Teagasc and the Department of Agriculture to attend the event.

Hoping for a fine day at the show…

It’s one of the most oft-repeated phrases one will hear at the launch of any respectable agricultural show and last Thursday in Hannon’s Hotel was certainly no different.

Those simple six words, ‘Let’s hope for a fine day’, usually ut-

tered in desperate hope rather than any real conviction, were repeated by most speakers present for the official launch of the Roscommon Industrial and Agricultural Show.

Sadly, last year’s show was hit by a deluge of rain which started in the early morning and continued right into the afternoon. The weather can make or break these

events in terms of enjoyment, but despite the horrendous conditions 12 months ago, reports were still very positive from both visitors and participants alike.

That being said, the past year has seen members of the local farming community forced to contend with a number of challenges, from rising fuel and input costs, the cost-

of-living crisis, and, yes, even high levels of rainfall.

Surely then, those organising, participating in and visiting this Saturday’s Roscommon Show deserve a break from the weather Gods?

So yes, let’s indeed hope for ‘a fine day’ this Saturday at Hannon’s Field, but maybe stick a Child of Prague out too just in case!

Captain Brian happy to support the show

<

DAN DOONER

Roscommon senior football captain and guest of honour at last Thursday’s Roscommon Show launch, Brian Stack, said he was delighted to offer his support to the event.

“Local events such as the Roscommon Industrial and Agricultural Show are very important. We know

the support everyone in Roscommon gives us on the football pitch from January to July each year so any chance we get to give something back we’ll always take it,” he said.

Brian had travelled down from Dublin to be at the launch and said he was very impressed with the hard work that goes in to running the show.

“It’s great to be here to see all the hard work that goes into it,” he said.

“I wouldn’t have known much about it until today. I hope they get the weather now and a big crowd this Saturday”.

Asked about his thoughts on this year’s All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, Brian said Dublin were the deserved winners

overall, but there was frustration in the Roscommon camp about how their own campaign ended.

“I thought the final was a very tactical affair but I suppose the weather probably played into that. Dublin were probably the better team on the day,” he said.

“You could say we (Roscommon) were unlucky

I suppose but at the end of the day, you make your own luck,” he said, adding that the team had been disappointed with their exit at the preliminary quarterfinals stage.

Brian said it was, however, “nice to bounce back” into the Roscommon club championships which commenced earlier this month.

Art, photography…and All-Ireland onions!

Aside from the numerous horse, cattle and sheep prizes up for grabs in Hannon’s Field this Saturday, there will also be classes in Farm and Home Produce, Art and Photography, Baking, Jams, Jellies, and even an All-Ireland Championship for Quality Onions!

There are also baking classes and arts and crafts

classes for those in primary and post-primary education and photography classes for all ages.

Speaking at the recent launch, Cllr Kathleen Shanagher, a show sponsor and volunteer, encouraged those present to come out and support the event, describing it as “a great day out”.

Admission and entertainment for children is free

this Saturday and Cllr Shanagher urged families to “thrown on the Wellingtons” and head along.

Other speakers to offer their support last Thursday included Senator Eugene Murphy, who praised central Government for its support of agricultural shows.

“We shouldn’t underestimate the importance of agricultural shows,” he said.

“These are difficult and challenging times for the farming community with the cost-of-living crisis and the recent weather…but the one thing they always have is hope and despite these challenges they continue to fight on.

“I hope that Saturday is a

wonderful day not only for the farming community of Roscommon but also for the wider community as well”.

Cllr Anthony Waldron, who was credited with helping to save the Roscommon Sheep breed earlier in proceedings, paid tribute to the show’s committee, whom he said was “working to make Roscommon a better place”. Roscommon IFA Chairman Pat Leonard, Gordon Pennick of Roscommon Mart, Ann Marie Beirne, Bank of Ireland, Nicola Featherstone, AIB, and local auctioneer P Burke also offered their support and best wishes ahead of Saturday’s show.

Rare Roscommon sheep breed to feature for first time

< DAN DOONER

It was confirmed at last Thursday night’s launch that the Roscommon sheep breed, previously thought extinct, would be making its first appearance at this year’s Industrial and Agricultural Show.

Addressing those present, the head of the sheep section, Pat Naughton, said: “The most exciting thing we have this year, and we can thank Cllr Anthony Waldron for it, are the classes for the Roscommon sheep.

“I’m at sheep all my life and I thought the Roscommon sheep were gone, but they are not, thanks to the work of the Roscommon

Sheep Breeders’ Association”.

Mr Naughton introduced Longford native, Noel Kiernan, praising him for his work in saving the iconic sheep breed.

He said that this year’s section would feature four classes for the Roscommon Sheep breed, sponsored by Cllr Waldron, and that the committee were delighted to have them.

Mr Kiernan said he had become interested in rare sheep breeds such as the Roscommon breed and that he had travelled by bicycle to Four Roads/Brideswell where he met Willie Dolan.

“Willie pointed out a ewe…I call her Eve now because she was the

start of rekindling the breed,” he said.

Mr Kiernan then sourced a ram from Gort, which he called ‘Adam’, and from that union two ram lambs were bred.

“We’re delighted to have categories in the show to show the sheep off to you. They are nice sheep and easy to handle,” he said.

As well as the historic Roscommon Sheep classes, there will also be up to 30 other classes in the section, according to Pat Naughton, including traditional, modern, and continental breeds.

The head of the sheep section also highlighted the young handlers’ class, which was free to

enter, and aimed at encouraging younger participants.

“They can bring a pet lamb if they like. If they know a few things about the sheep, they can win a prize. We’ll give everyone a rosette just to encourage them,” he said.

Sticking with the theme of encouraging more participation in the Roscommon Show, Mr Naughton urged others to come forward to help run the event. “It would be great to see someone else coming on board,” he said.

“If we don’t get younger people (involved in running the various sections), then I don’t know what’s going to happen”.

THE BUSINESS BRIEF(S)

WDC appoints new CEO

The board of the Western Development Commission (WDC), the State agency responsible for the economic and social development of the West of Ireland, has appointed Sligo native, Allan Mulrooney, as their new chief executive stepping into the role from next month. Mr Mulrooney has a strong track record in both the private and public sectors and has been acting as Interim CEO at the WDC since December 2022.

Gerry Finn, Chairperson of the WDC, said: “On behalf of the board, I am pleased to welcome Allan to the role of CEO. He has a proven record of achievement within the organisation and we look forward to working with him to maximise the continued growth of the region. One of his initial tasks will be to oversee the implementation and completion of the WDC strategy Work Smarter, Live Better’ 2019 – 2024”.

Multiple accolades for Oliver Carty & Family

Oliver Carty & Family, a specialist pork and bacon processing company based in Monksland in Athlone, was celebrating recently after seven of its pork and bacon products were awarded star status at the prestigious Great Taste food awards.

These awards included a highly sought-after three stars for its ‘Honey and Brown Sugar Slow Cooked Ham on the Bone’.

Three-star awards are given to products deemed “extraordinarily tasty” and the Oliver Carty & Family Honey and Brown Sugar Slow Cooked Ham on the Bone was one of just 17 products in Ireland to achieve this accolade.

In addition to its three-star award, Oliver Carty & Family said it was thrilled that six of its other products were recognised for their excellence.

Lagging beef price costing farmer €2m/week - IFA

As Irish beef price continues to fall, the gap between Irish beef price and the Bord Bia export benchmark price, currently at 19 cent/kg is widening. IFA President Tim Cullinan is calling on meat factories to immediately address this gap which is costing the Irish livestock sector millions on a weekly basis.

“We estimate that the gap between the export benchmark price and the Irish beef price is costing the Irish beef farmers about €2 million per week at the moment. This is at a time where farmers are really struggling due to bad weather and escalating costs,” Cullinan said.

“Farmers need every cent that is in the market to be returned to them. But, instead of closing the gap with the benchmark price, factories are going in the other direction with beef price,” he added.

Meat industry must reverse cuts!

Meanwhile, ICSA Beef chair Edmund Graham has said there will be no need for any scheme

FARMING DESK

to reduce cattle numbers if the meat industry continues their onslaught on beef prices.

“The price cuts we have seen since April are too much to bear for most beef farmers. It is an exit scheme in everything but name because farmers are being left with no choice but to get out anyway,” he said.

“Unless the meat industry reverses these cuts there will be zero incentive for farmers to feed cattle this winter. Last winter, Teagasc said prices would have to hit €6/kg in the spring to cover our inflated production costs. We know now that prices did not even come close to that

with steers peaking at around €5.25/kg in April and falling since. No beef farmer can afford a carbon copy of that come next spring.

“Unless beef prices start to improve, ICSA is advising farmers to seriously consider leaving sheds empty this winter,” he concluded.

New farming apprenticeships are now open for applications

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris has recently announced the launch of two new farming apprenticeships; the Farm Manager apprenticeship and the Farm Technician apprenticeship.

There will be a range of farm enterprises eligible for successful farm apprentices to be employed on including the cattle, dairy, pigs, poultry, tillage and sheep sectors.

IFA President Tim Cullinan has acknowledged what he described as a “worthwhile initiative”. Applications are now open and the IFA President is encouraging farmers who would be interested in hiring a farm apprentice to seek further information and to register as a farm apprentice employer.

Speaking to the Roscommon People this week, joint selling agents Nigel Dineen Auctioneers and Cox & Walsh bring to the market a beautiful three-bedroomed semi-detached house in the picturesque village of Frenchpark.

This stunning property has emerged on the market, captivating hearts and minds with its alluring charm. This newly introduced, semi-detached residence stands as a testament to quality craftsmanship and timeless beauty. Nestled amidst a backdrop of mature, wellmanicured lawns, this luxurious abode has quickly become the talk of the town.

Strategically positioned for ultimate convenience, the property offers easy access to the heart of Frenchpark Village, just a brief walk away. For those seeking amenities and services from larger towns, Castlerea town centre is a mere ten-minute drive, while the bustling town of Carrick-on-Shannon awaits just 20 minutes down the road. Jetsetters will find solace in the proximity of Knock Airport, a mere 30-minute journey from this coveted address.

Step inside, and be greeted by an inviting entrance hall, boasting elegant timber flooring that exudes warmth and sophistication. The sitting room beckons with its cozy ambiance, accentuated by an open fireplace with a solid fuel stove, not only adding to the homely atmosphere but also providing a practical heating solution for water and radiators. Double French doors lead to a tastefully designed kitchen, a chef’s haven with its fitted features and charming patio door, inviting natural light and views of the enchanting garden.

As we venture upstairs, the feeling of opulence continues. The landing, adorned with timber flooring, presents an attic door, offering a hint of mystery and untapped potential. Three generously sized bedrooms await, each boasting their unique character.

Bedroom one - carpeted and complete with a fitted wardrobe - indulges its occupants with an ensuite that boasts contemporary fixtures and fully tiled features. Bedrooms two and three, also carpeted and adorned with curtains and blinds, offer a haven of tranquility and space,

with Bedroom three featuring an additional fitted wardrobe.

The main bathroom completes this haven of comfort, offering a white suite, exquisite tiles over the bath, and stylish wallmounted units.

Venturing outside, a tarmac drive gracefully guides visitors to the front entrance, surrounded by meticulously designed gardens on both sides, providing a warm and welcoming embrace to residents and guests alike. The property stands secure within its own haven, enclosed by a charming timber fence that further enhances the sense of privacy and tranquility.

Practicality meets efficiency with the inclusion of an oil-fired central heating system, accompanied by a solid fuel central heating system, ensuring residents stay comfortable throughout the year. PVC windows and doors offer not only aesthetic appeal but also contribute to energy efficiency and reduced maintenance.

THANKSGIVINGS

UNFAILING NOVENA PRAYER TO ST. ANTHONY

Oh Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for His creatures made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I implore of you to obtain for me (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so, you are the ‘Saint of Miracles’. O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the Sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms, and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Publication promised for a great favour received. A.M.K.

THE MIRACULOUS PRAYER

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked you for many favours. This time I ask this special one. (mention it). Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour, not mine. Say for three days, promise publication, never known to fail. Also special thanks to Our Blessed Lady, St. Padre Pio, Saint Teresa of the Roses. G.F.

As we lovingly remember Ann on her first anniversary, the Kenny family wish to thank all who sympathised with us, attended the Funeral and to all who sent mass cards. Your support was greatly appreciated.

A special thank you to Pat and Gillian Smyth, Funeral Directors, for their professionalism and also for facilitating our family wishes throughout. Thank you for Fr Ali Joe and Fr Ray Milton for a lovely Funeral Mass. A heartfelt thank you for Aileen O’Connor for her beautiful singing in the Church. A massive thank you for all our relatives, friends and neighbours who helped in so many ways.

As it is impossible to thank everyone individually we hope that you will accept this notice as an expression of deep gratitude and appreciation.

Sadly missed by her husband Michael, son Philip, daughters Susan and Laura, their partners, grandchildren and extended family.

Ann’s First Anniversary Mass will be celebrated in St. Patricks Church, Knockcroghery on Saturday, 26th August at 7pm.

Vouchsafe to recommend it to your Daughter, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and lay it before the throne of Jesus, so that He may bring it to a happy issue. Cease not to intercede for me until my request is granted. (Here ask for favour you wish to obtain). Above all, obtain for me the grace of one day beholding my God face to face, and with thee and Mary and all the saints, praising and blessing Him through all eternity. Amen Good St. Anne, mother of her Who is our Life, our Sweetness and our Hope, pray to her for us, and obtain our request. (Three times). A.K.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the malice and snares of the Devil. Amen. A.K.

PRAYER FOR THE INTERCESSION OF ST. PIO OF PIETRELCINA

Dear God, You generously blessed Your servant, St. Pio of Pietrelcina, with the gifts of the Spirit. You marked his body with the five wounds of Christ Crucified, as a powerful witness to the saving Passion and Death of Your Son. Endowed with the gift of discernment, St. Pio labored endlessly in the confessional for the salvation of souls. With reverence and intense devotion in the celebration of Mass, he invited countless men and women to a greater union with Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Through the intercession of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, I confidently beseech You to grant me the grace of (here state your petition). Glory be to the Father… (three times). Amen. A.K.

Finalists feel the heat!

Strokestown and Boyle in danger ahead of round two

With 2022 champions Strokestown and runners-up Boyle among a number of teams sending up ‘Save Our Season’ flares in the Hodson Bay Group Senior Football Championship this weekend, Seamus Duke offers his predictions ahead of a pivotal second round of games…

Game of the Weekend

Strokestown v Oran in Strokestown at 1 pm on Sunday

There are a number of candidates for the ‘Game of the Weekend’ but the game between Strokestown and Oran edges them all because the defending champions could be out of the championship at the group stages if they fail to win.

Short a number of first team players, Strokestown were well off the mark against Clann na nGael in the opening round of games and they will have to improve drastically if they are to stay in contention.

With only two teams going through from each group, another loss would leave the champions needing a win in a local derby against Tulsk to avoid the dreaded relegation battle. That would be some fall from grace for the Black and Amber in the space of just 12 months!

Oran have a remarkable record since they ascended to the senior ranks. They have not lost a group game at all but have just failed to progress when it comes to the knockout stages and they will want to put that right this year. They were always comfortable against Tulsk in round one but they will know that they will have to improve to progress.

This is a huge test for Strokestown and they will really have to step up to the mark if they want to turn the ship around. Oran look stronger up front, however, and are tipped to win a close battle.

Prediction: Oran

Group A

The big challenge for Roscommon Gaels now is whether they back up their excellent display against Boyle with another performance against Western Gaels on Friday night. Scott Oates returns and Frankie Dolan’s team will be hoping to see more ruthless finishing from the likes of Peter Gillooly, Cian Connolly and Richie Walsh. But it’s further back that The Gaels were so impressive against Boyle with Cathal Dineen, Senan Lambe, John McManus and Mark Purcell dominating their positions.

Western Gaels are another team who know they must win to maintain their interest in this year’s championship. They stayed with St Faithleach’s for most of the way in round one before the Murtagh brothers and Cathal Gunn stepped in with vital late scores. In this ‘battle of the Gaels’ the town side should win.

There is a really fascinating game on Saturday in Ballyleague (5 pm) when Boyle visit St Faithleach’s. Boyle were put to the sword by Roscommon Gaels in round one and they will have to carry out major surgery on their defence if they are to survive here.

No one doubts the quality of the likes of Cian McKeon, Enda and Donie Smith, and Daire Cregg but Boyle’s defending will have to improve if they want to keep the Marvellous Murtagh brothers at bay.

The sides met at the same stage last year at the same venue and Boyle were very fortunate to come out of that clash with a one-point win. Last year’s finalists will need a major transformation to win here.

Group B

Pádraig Pearses played well in their defeat against St Brigid’s and they will be hot favourites to win when they meet Michael Glavey’s in Creggs (Saturday 7 pm). Glavey’s were very poor against

St Dominic’s in round one and without the likes of Andy Glennon, Dylan Ruane and Cathal Heneghan, struggled in attack.

Pearses have a very familiar look about them and if Hubert Darcy, Paul Carey and Eoin Colleran can click then they should record their first win of the campaign.

There is an intriguing local derby in Johnstown as St Dominic’s meet St Brigid’s on Saturday evening (7 pm). Brigid’s did enough to get over the line against Pearses in the opening round and they are the justified favourites to win the Fahey Cup this year.

Dominic’s scored a vital win against Michael Glavey’s and the pressure is off

Tomás Gilleran’s men as they face into what will be a tough game for them. Anything other than a Brigid’s win would be a big surprise.

Group C

Strokestown face Oran in our Game of the Weekend (previewed above) and in the other game in this group, Clann na nGael travel to Tulsk on Sunday (3.30 pm).

After a poor league campaign, Pat Fallon’s Clann were the impressive winners against Strokestown in the opening round and with Ciaran Lennon, Fearghus Lennon, Sea Henry and Paul McManus all playing well, Clann should emerge with a narrow win.

Still all to play for in the IFC

Seamus Duke casts an expert eye over the weekend fixtures ahead of round two of the Callington Ltd Intermediate Football Championship…

Group A

Éire Óg and Shannon Gaels both won in round one of the Callington Ltd Intermediate Football Championship and they clash in Loughglynn this Friday evening. The Gaels were very happy with their win in the local derby against Kilmore in round one and the pressure is off them to a certain extent

now. But at home, Éire Óg should be too strong.

Kilmore will now be looking over their shoulders and their trip to Kiltoom on Sunday to take on St Brigids will not be an easy one. Brigid’s have plenty of good young players and this one could end in a draw.

Group B

St Aidan’s went down badly to Fuerty in the opening round and they will be hoping for a better display when they welcome St Croan’s to Ballyforan on

Saturday afternoon. Croan’s were impressive against Kilbride and they will have one eye on the title this year. The Ballintubber/Ballymoe side should maintain their 100 per cent record this weekend.

Kilbride entertain Fuerty on Saturday in what looks like a fairly straightforward task for the visitors, who looked back to their best in the first round against St Aidan’s.

Group C

Elphin needed Fintan Cregg to come

on and help them over the line against Pádraig Pearses in round one, and their clash with Castlerea on Saturday is definitely the ‘Game of the Weekend’ in the IFC. Both these teams will be eyeing up a title charge. Castlerea at their best might just edge it. Creggs will be hoping to put a poor performance in round one behind them when they face Pádraig Pearses in Ballyforan on Sunday. This will be a very competitive match and Creggs might just have enough to score a badly needed win.

Brennan fires Tremane into last eight

Kepak Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship Tremane 1-22 Pádraig Pearses 1-16

Tremane advanced to the quarterfinals of the this year’s senior hurling championship following a deserved victory at sunny Athleague on Sunday but they were made fight all the way by a plucky Pearses’ side who just ran out of steam in the dying stages.

The first half was very lively and a depleted Pearses’ outifit had the aid of the strong breeze as they set about their task with some great scores. Sean Canning scored a fine goal after five minutes and with Tomás Sweeney on song from frees, the Woodmount side were ahead at the break, 1-11 to 0-9. However, Tremane were much brighter on the restart and, led by a magnificent display from Michael Brennan, they wore Pearses down

gradually. Brennan goaled after two minutes following a superb pass from Padraig Brennan, and by the 36th minute the scores were level at 1-12 each.

But Pearses provided stubborn resistance, and it wasn’t until the 48th minute that Tremane went ahead (1-15 to 1-14) with Michael Brennan, Peter Kellehan and Joe Brennan prominent. Pearses were not helped by some errant shooting and their total of 17 wides tells its own story.

In the final ten minutes, Tremane finally pulled away with Michael Brennan knocking over some superb points in a ‘man of the match’ display.

So it’s job done for Tremane, who fielded without Niall Kilroy, and will now face St Dominic’s in the quarterfinal. For Pearses, their championship is now over; they simply couldn’t cope with all the absentees from last year’s panel.

Tremane: Kevin Kellehan; Mossy Tiernan, Sean Melia, Kevin Brennan; Padraig Brennan, Warren Boyle, Aaron Flaherty; Sean Mahony (0-2),

Joe Brennan (0-2); Niall Keenan (03), Michael Kellehan, Cathal Brennan (0-1); Peter Kellehan (0-3, 1 free), John Brennan, Michael Brennan (111, 3 frees).

Subs: Seamus Lynch for K Brennan (h/t), Cian O’Brien for P Brennan (39), Adrian Flanagan for Lynch (42), Conor Kavanagh for M Kellehan (52), Ruairi Tiernan for John Brennan (65).

Pádraig Pearses: Conor Glynn; Shane Glennon, David Dolan, Tiege Cogavin; Ronan Finn, Shane Naughton, Tomas Sweeney (0-8, all frees); Dara Finn (0-2), Joseph Kelly; Padraig Galvin, David Sweeney, Luke Corbett; Sean Canning (1-3), Eoghan Costello (0-1), Sean Dunne (0-2).

Subs: James Curley for Glennon (38), Tomas Carey for D Sweeney (55).

Referee: Matthew Farrell (Oran) Man of the Match: Michael Brennan (Tremane)

Buccs kick off new season

Buccaneers commence the new club season when they entertain Corinthians in the opening round of the Bank of Ireland Connacht Senior League at Dubarry Park, Athlone, on Saturday. Kick-off is 2.30 pm.

The Pirates have a new look, inhouse coaching group led by head coach Paul Byrne assisted by Benny Gilligan, David Henshaw and Eoin Slevin. Craig Milling returns to the fold as senior team manager while Martin Staunton, who has retired after many years of sterling service on the playing fields, leads the seconds coaching team.

Buccaneers have been back in training since mid-July and the squad, which has a youthful but lively look about it, will be skippered by Frankie Hopkins for the coming campaign.

Leo’s Irish cap

Next Saturday is a monumental day for Leo Galvin who will finally be presented with his senior international cap at a function in the Aviva Stadium ahead of Ireland’s fixture against England. The presentation will celebrate Leo playing against Argentina. Richly well deserved, Leo, and long overdue.

Congratulations all round!

Congratulations to Buccaneers players, Tom Sheehan and Jack Pollard, who touched down for two tries as Ireland U-18s defeated Wales 7-5 and Scotland 19-5 before losing to Italy 29-5 in a training tournament held in Cardiff.

Meanwhile, Buccs’ quartet Kailin Blessing, Kyle Byrne, Andrew

SHC: Teams set for knockout stages

In the other games at the weekend in the Kepak Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship, there were wins as expected for Four Roads and Athleague. On Saturday night, Athleague were far too good for Oran winning by 4-23 to 0-14 while on Sunday evening Four Roads defeated Roscommon Gaels by 1-19 to 1-6. The quarter-finals will now see Roscommon Gaels play Oran while Tremane will take on St Dominic’s. In the semi-finals, Athleague will be waiting for the winners of Roscommon Gaels and Oran while Four Roads will face Tremane or St Dominic’s.

Handball Creaton wins

Henson and Kyle Mahon played for Connacht U-17s who defeated Munster and Ulster but lost narrowly to Leinster.

It was a good weekend too for Buccaneers U-14 Girls squad who made a successful long trip north to Enniskillen. They had an early start to their day and indeed to their season but came home with silverware following a 33-7 victory over the Co Fermanagh club to be the first winners of the Michael Scallon Junior Perpetual Cup.

Finally, well done to Connacht Women’s team on their dramatic victory over Leinster. Ivana Kiripati started at No 8 in this rare win with Aoibheann Reilly being particularly influential at scrumhalf, a position in which her brother Colm is also highly adept.

All-Ireland Masters title

Lisacul’s Denis Creaton claimed hardball glory at the All-Ireland Masters Series, played at the new state-of-the-art courts in Croke Park on Saturday last.

Hardball is played on a 60x30 court with a small, resilient ball crafted from cork and leather, which has a stark white hue. The balls were once handcrafted by Vincent Brennan in Ballaghaderreen, a process which took hours of labour.

Such is the ferocity of the game that players are obliged to pad their hands as the ball is said to travel at speeds exceeding 100mph.

In a captivating display of sportsmanship, Denis met fellow Lisacul man Sean Jennings in the opening round with the former coming out on top on a 25-6 scoreline.

Sean then went on to face Mick Dowling of Kildare and Michael O’Toole of Limerick, losing both, 2511 and 25-5 respectively.

Denis’ journey continued, however, as he defeated the aforementioned Dowling on a score of 25-18 before tasting defeat to

O’Toole, 25-15.

The tournament reached its climax on Sunday when Creaton met O’Toole in a rematch for the title. It looked ominous after the first with O’Toole coming out on top 21-19 but Denis hit back in style, winning the second 21-9.

The tiebreaker saw Denis storm to an 11-4 win, clinching a remarkable

All-Ireland victory. Denis Creaton’s remarkable journey through the All-Ireland Hardball Masters Series stands as a testament to his indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication to this ancient Irish sport. Recently, Denis and Sean paired up in the All-Ireland Doubles, but lost out in the final to a Dublin pairing in two straight games.
