The Government has agreed to a nationwide ban on all household visits from midnight tonight (Thursday), except for essential reasons such as childcare and compassionate grounds.

The move came after an extended Cabinet meeting to discuss moving border counties Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal to Level Four yesterday evening.

night on Tuesday (October 13th) which brought the total in the county to 122 in the past two weeks alone.

As of midnight on Monday, it was confirmed that there had been 562 confirmed cases in Roscommon, meaning an increase of 62 cases in seven days Roscommon-Galway (from Monday, Constituency October 5th).

As a result of yesterday’s cases, the county’s 14-day incidence rate of Covid-19 has risen slightly to 189.0 per 100,000 of population, which is up on Monday’s figure of 182.8. See page Taoiseach Micheál Martin…household ban confirmed.

I recently wondered who may sit on a jury for jury service. Are certain people excluded and not allowed serve? Can I refuse to attend if I am selected? Am I entitled to travel expenses?

In Ireland, most serious criminal offences require a trial by a judge and jury. The jury will consist of 12 members of the public who are selected from a number of people who were called to do their jury service on that day. The jurors decide whether a person is guilty or not guilty of the offence for which he or she has been charged, based on the facts of the case.

Jurors are contacted by summons stating that they are obliged to attend for jury service on a particular date.

Every Irish citizen over 18 years of age who is on the Register of Dáil Electors is eligible for jury service. However, a number of exceptions apply and any person involved in any way with the administration of justice are excluded including judges, Gardai, prison officers, barristers, solicitors, court officers.

You are disqualified from jury service if you have been convicted of a serious offence in Ireland; been imprisoned for five years or more or if you have been sentenced to a term of imprisonment of three months or more within the past 10 years.

You may also be excused from jury service for varying reasons, example: full-time students; those providing an important community service such as doctors, nurses.

The members of the jury who have been selected will individually swear an oath or affirm that they will properly try the issue and give a true verdict according to the evidence.

It is an offence to fail to attend for jury service without reasonable excuse. There is no payment for jury service. Travelling expenses are not allowed.

What we liked…

In what is a devastating climate, Budget 2021 contained many good elements and – on balance – is a positive response by the Government to the range of challenges facing the country.

What we didn’t like…

The news that there are 30 patients with Covid-19 in Cavan General Hospital – alone – is a stark sign of the worrying current trend with regard to the virus.

122 Covid cases in Roscommon over past two weeks < DAN DOONER

There were eight new cases of Covid-19 in County Roscommon as of midnight on Tuesday (October 13th) with 1,095 recorded nationally and, sadly, five new deaths.

This brings the number of deaths here to 1,835 with a total of 45,243 cases.

There were 246 new cases in Dublin, 185 in Meath, 128 in Cavan, 118 in Cork, 63 in Kildare and the remaining 342 cases were spread across all remaining counties.

As of 2 pm yesterday (Wednesday 14th) there were 232 patients hospitalised with the virus, with 30 of those in ICU. There were nine new hospitalisations in the previous 24 hours.

In light of yesterday’s numbers, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Tony Holohan, called on members of the public to reduce contact with others.

“Today, we again report a daily new confirmed case figure over 1,000. This situation is extremely concerning. Every single one of us has a role to play.

“We each need to reduce contact with other people as much as possible, so that means staying at home, working from home where possible, practicing physical distancing and stopping discretionary socialising,” he said.

The Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Ronan Glynn, said it was now time to act.

He said: “People must now make choices. Stop meeting up in groups, stop socialising, stop organising play dates, parties and other social activities. People must recognise that the disease is a direct threat to themselves and their families.

Now is the time for each of us to act”.

€5m University boost welcomed The AIT-LIT Consortium has received a major funding boost to assist in its progression towards achieving technological university (TU) status. The consortium was awarded a further €5 million from the Higher Education Innovation and Transformation Fund to help actualise its ambition.

The news was announced by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, as part of a multi-million euro investment into the higher education landscape.

“This is welcome news, and demonstrates confidence in our forthcoming application for TU designation,” said AIT President Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin. “It is an important juncture in our journey as we prepare to create a new entity, capable of sustaining social, economic and industrial growth across the region”.

Deputy Denis Naughten welcomed the Government allocation of €5m towards the development of a new Technological University in Athlone, working with Limerick.

Fianna Fáil Cllr. John Keogh says it’s time to hit illegal dumpers with heavy fines after pictures emerged of household and other waste at Carrickynaughten bog near Clonown in Co. Roscommon.

Household waste such as a fridge, television, light bulbs and garden waste are clearly visible in pictures sent to the Roscommon People.

Cllr. Keogh said illegal dumping was on the rise during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Unfortunately, dumping would appear to be on the in-

crease during the pandemic with fewer volunteers available and with council staff required to adhere to NPHET advice.

“There really is no excuse for dumping, however, be it normal household waste or larger waste items. We need to look at waste collection generally because the current policy nationally is not working in addressing the issue.

“Our bogs are critical in promoting biodiversity, which should be a foundation block for how our country moves forward as a society. It is not sustainable to treat our natural habitat in the manner in which some people consider is appropriate. Illegal dumping of this kind or any kind needs to stop, with heavy fines imposed (on offenders).

“We should also look to recruit more staff to carry out inspections, seeking receipts and other evidence to show how waste is disposed of,” he said.

HEALTHY IRELAND COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH SMALL GRANTS SCHEME 2020 Roscommon Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) invites applications from community, voluntary and sporting organisations for the newly established Healthy Ireland Community Mental Health Small Grant Scheme 2020.

Healthy Ireland is a government led initiative aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of everyone living in Ireland. Now in its 3rd year, the ‘Healthy Ireland Fund’ provides funding to - local organisations to deliver actions which will improve health and wellbeing in line with Healthy Ireland, A Framework for Improved Health and Wellbeing 2013 – 2025.

The Grant Scheme is available to not-for-profit local community groups, voluntary and sporting organisations which promote positive mental health. Eligible activities include: • Wellbeing activities • Creative arts programmes / Play programmes • Family Support projects • Educational initiatives • Actions supporting the implementation of ‘Connecting for Life’ • Infant and children’s mental health initiatives • Mental Health training through partnerships/collaboration • Initiatives to improve living well with a chronic condition A number of priority target groups have been identified under this scheme, please refer to the Healthy Ireland Community Mental Health Small Grant Scheme guidelines.

The Scheme offers small grants for projects with a minimum spend of €2000 and up to a maximum of €5000.

Funding is exclusively for programme activity under the Healthy Ireland theme of Mental Health.

€200k for Covid adaptation in local towns and villages < DAN DOONER

Local towns and villages are set to receive funding of €200,000 towards renewal projects including web-based marketing, seating and marquees for outdoor events – and even an outdoor cinema system – to help them adjust to Covid-19 restrictions.

The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys, announced the details of the €4.3 million in funding under the Accelerated Measure of the Town and Village Renewal Scheme earlier this week.

Independent TD and Chair of the Dáil Committee on Community and Rural Development,

Denis Naughten, says projects in Roscommon, Ballaghaderreen, Ballyforan, Kilteevan, Elphin, Strokestown and Glenamaddy would benefit.

“The projects are all focused on developing the local areas making them more attractive to visit, live and work”.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy said the scheme would address the challenges towns and villages face due to Covid-19.

Under the funding, Roscommon will receive €40,000 for its marketing and advertising strategy, Christmas lights, and the enhancement of approach roads into the town.

Ballaghaderreen will receive €39,960 for web-based marketing,

a marquee for outdoor events and Christmas lights.

Strokestown is set to receive €24,930 for street furniture improvements and the creation of a Christmas market.

Kilteevan will receive €25,000 for outdoor amenities including a gazebo, BBQ, generator, PA system and bike racks.

Elphin will also receive €25,000 for lights and seating for community events and a marquee.

Ballyforan will receive €24,093 for an outdoor cinema system, a marquee, seating for outdoor events and a Christmas tree and lights.

Finally, Glenamaddy will receive a total of €25,000 for improvements to community recreational areas.

A beautiful love story has unfolded in pandemic-struck Ireland in recent weeks…

Thousands of singletons out there would love to find someone to look at them the way…the Irish soccer media looks at Stephen Kenny!

Flash a yellow card at me for curmudgeonly begrudgery if you must, but I really am amused at how smitten the media is with the new Republic of Ireland manager.

I welcome his appointment, and am as hopeful as every other fan that Kenny’s much-heralded commitment to passing/attacking football will indeed lead to success (with some much-needed entertainment along the way).

Only time will tell if Kenny leads a great revolution, or if his term in charge proves to be underwhelming.

What is intriguing is how the Irish media idolises him; I know it’s early days (Kenny’s only been in charge for five games) but it is already clear that he is in for a much softer ride than predecessors Staunton, Kerr, Trappatoni, O’Neill and McCarthy.

The Irish media have put their cards on the table on this one; they have proclaimed Kenny to be the saviour, even as those of us who are (admittedly) less informed, wait to parse his gospel.

In The Sunday Independent, my former colleague Eamonn Sweeney still appears to be torn between Mick McCarthy bashing and Stephen Kenny lionising.

Eamonn’s obsession with the ‘Changing of the Guard’ reached

bizarre levels last weekend when, commenting on the Euro 2020 campaign, he wrote: “…McCarthy was allowed to waste two years. Had Stephen Kenny been working with this team for those two years, we’d have qualified”.

With media cheerleaders now giving Kenny credit for (non-existent) achievements that might have been, the likeable new manager can sleep well! Eamonn might do well to note that Stephen Kenny did have a chance to get Ireland to the Euros – but that chance was spurned with last week’s play-off defeat to Slovakia.

The new manager has been extremely unlucky over the past week or so, with Covid-related landmines everywhere he turns. His term as manager may be a great success, and I hope it is. He’s a nice guy and a promising manager. He should not be definitively judged for at least eighteen months. Ireland are playing a passing game under Kenny, and that’s a welcome shift in approach.

But the tastiest pass of all – the free pass from the Irish media – is fascinating.

Do I get a red card for begrudgery if I close off with this observation?

Including Wednesday night’s (latest) defeat (v Finland), Ireland have played five games under Kenny so far. We didn’t win any of them.

We scored a grand total of one goal (yep, from a set-piece).

Ah, I can’t sign off on a negative.

Of course I wish Kenny well, and his ‘revolution’ will take time. My point is that the media is going to be very soft on him, relative to its

approach with others. Mick McCarthy, for all his quirks, did well as Ireland manager. After all, we are not Argentina or Brazil in disguise.

Last weekend…

I’m not the greatest fan of the Late Late (as regular readers may know) but I thought Kathleen Watkins was eloquent and dignified when she guested on the show on Friday night.

Kathleen, whose late husband Gay made the show the phenomenon it became, spoke very movingly.

Also over the weekend, I was filled with renewed admiration for the modest, unassuming Catherine Corless, the wonderful lady who uncovered the Tuam Babies scandal.

She was a fascinating guest on The Meaning of Life.

Unplugging the TVs wasn’t enough…just to be on the safe side, I also draped sheets over the screens.

I turned off all social media, pulled the curtains, and left every room in darkness.

Sitting in front of the silenced TV

with a nice cup of tea, I was still nervous, such was the enormity of what was about to happen, of the terror that might unfold.

I knew the next hour would be crucial. Time moved slowly. At one stage, I dozed off, only to wake up in the middle of a nightmare, in which I was trapped in a room with a selfobsessed panto queen and a hyperactive parrot.

Awake again, I tentatively turned the TV back on, and dared to look. Sheer relief. It was over. I had avoided ‘Lodging with Lucy’ featuring Twink and her parrot. I could breathe easily again…and look forward to a peaceful night’s sleep (hopefully).

Tuesday Driving from Rooskey towards Lanesboro…and, torn between being a news junkie and a cynic, I give in and turn the radio on to hear some of the breaking Budget reaction. Unlike the embattled Justice Seamus Woulfe, I am (just about) in ‘Listening to current affairs while driving’ mode.

I decide to flick through the national stations. It’s just after 3 pm. On Newstalk, Sinn Féin’s Eoin Ó Broin is gamely trying to convince Shane

Coleman that many of the millions of euro announced for projects were in fact previously committed. He’s a highly competent TD, but the inevitable shaping of ‘Budget positions’ along party political lines is tiresome.

I switch to RTE Radio 1, where Róisín Shortall (Social Democrats) is also predictably scrambling to find flaws midst the flurry.

It’s clear that reaction to the Budget will – as ever – be along fairly predictable lines, with Government politicians hailing it and Opposition TDs shaking their heads and lamenting missed opportunities.

I wonder if Today FM is waiting until Matt Cooper comes on at 4.30, or if they have a good Budget row going…better still, they may be sticking to their diet of afternoon music. I switch…and hear the following lyrics of a popular song: ‘So wake me up when it’s all over/When I’m wiser and I’m older’.

Indeed! Meanwhile, not too far from Cloontuskert, two ladies chatting in a garden are going to great lengths to make sure they maintain social distancing. Clearly neighbours, they’ve having a great chat. Whether it’s about Justice Woulfe, the Budget, Covid or the price of turnips is anyone’s guess.

Governments rise and fall by His permission, with no authority but that given from above (see John 19:11; Romans 13:1). In effect, God says to every ruler what He tells King Cyrus in today’s First Reading: “I have called you… though you knew me not”.

The Lord raised up Cyrus to restore the Israelites from exile, and to rebuild Jerusalem (see Ezra 1:1–4). Throughout salvation history, God has used foreign rulers for the sake of His chosen people. Pharaoh’s heart was hardened to reveal God’s power (see Romans 9:17). Invading armies were used to punish Israel’s sins (see 2 Maccabees 6:7–16).

The Roman occupation during Jesus’ time was, in a similar way, a judgment on Israel’s unfaithfulness. Jesus’ famous words in today’s Gospel, “Repay to Caesar”, are a pointed reminder of this. And they call us, too, to keep our allegiances straight.

The Lord alone is our king. His kingdom is not of this world (see John 18:36) but it begins here in His Church, which tells of His glory among all peoples. Citizens of heaven (see Philippians 3:20), we are called to be a light to the world (see Matthew 5:14) – working in faith, laboring in love, and enduring in hope, as today’s Epistle counsels.

We owe the government a concern for the common good and obedience to laws – unless they conflict with God’s commandments as interpreted by the Church (see Acts 5:29).

But we owe God everything. The coin bears Caesar’s image.

But we bear God’s own image (see Genesis 1:27). We owe Him our very lives – all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, offered as a living sacrifice of love (see Romans 12:1–2).

We should pray for our leaders, that like Cyrus they do God’s will (see 1 Timothy 2:1–2) – until from the rising of the sun to its setting, all humanity knows that Jesus is Lord.

NewsPeople newsbriefs Gardaí investigate theft from hardware store Roscommon Gardaí are appealing for any information following a theft from a hardware store in the town yesterday afternoon (Wednesday).

The incident happened at around one o’clock when two men walked into the hardware store on the Circular Road and made off with a quantity of tools.

Gardaí are asking anyone who might have seen anything unusual on the Circular Road around lunchtime yesterday to contact them on 090-6638300.

Over €5,000 worth of cannabis discovered in Keadue Cannabis worth over €5,000 was discovered by Roscommon Gardaí following a search of a property in Keadue on Tuesday afternoon.

The drugs were discovered following the planned search which was carried out by members of the divisional drugs unit in Roscommon/Longford.

During the search, Gardaí seized a quantity of suspected cannabis with an estimated value of €5,600, subject to analysis.

No arrests have been made but Gardaí are following a definite line of enquiry.

Tree-planting in Strokestown to mark World Mental Health Day To mark World Mental Health Day, Pieta House asked the Darkness into Light Strokestown Committee to plant a cherry blossom tree as a symbol of hope.

This ‘Tree of Hope’ is one of more than 100 that were planted in locations around the country by other Darkness into Light committees.

While the tree was planted by the committee, the project would not have been possible without the help and support of the Strokestown Tidy Towns Team. We would like to thank Melissa Newman, Pat and Annette Feeley for being our resident gardeners. We

Naughten: ‘Climate Action Bill is undemocratic’ < DAN DOONER

Independent TD Denis Naughten has said that the people of rural Ireland should be concerned following the publication of the Climate Action Bill, describing it as “absolutely undemocratic” and warning that the window is fast closing on reducing Ireland’s carbon footprint.

As the Government’s Climate Action Committee meets with environmental law experts today (Thursday) to discuss the proposed legislation for tackling the climate crisis, the former Minister for Communications, Climate Action and the Environment raised serious concerns regarding the new bill.

Deputy Naughten said: “Having the Climate Advisory Council, which is made up of academics, driving this agenda is very concerning.

“The other big concern I have is that while the Minister and Government can amend this legislation, the Dáil has no role in amending climate budgets. The climate budget sets out the

overall emissions across the economy for the next five years and while the Minister and Government can change it, the Dáil can only accept it or reject it in full.

“If the Dáil rejects it then the Minister can do whatever he likes after that without consulting the Dáil,” he said.

Deputy Naughten called for “binding limits” to be put in place and the responsibility to be placed on individual sectors to comply with them.

“This (proposed legislation) is very much a one size fits all system that actually incentivises sectors to do the bare minimum so that the heavy lifting is done by someone else.

It is also absolutely undemocratic that if Dáil Éireann, which is elected by the people, rejects a proposal, then they have no other say or role in relation to it, which is absolutely horrendous.

“Effectively, you are giving a blank cheque to the Minister of the day. You either accept what the Minister proposes, which has come from the Climate Change Advisory

Council, or he does his own thing,” he added.

The Roscommon Galway TD said that while it wasn’t too late to change the bill, there was a growing culture in Government “that believes everything from the Green Party is right” when it comes to environmental issues.

“I would advocate very strongly that right across the board in every sector of the economy we have to reduce emissions but that we have to introduce a system in Ireland which meets our circumstances and our needs, and not ‘copy and paste’ something from some other EU country.

“People in rural Ireland need to be quite worried with what’s happening.

There is a threat over agriculture, particularly in relation to the suckler sector. We also see the challenges we have in Bord na Móna and the Just Transition,” he said.

Deputy Naughten was also highly critical of the current carbon tax system, which, he says, penalises people in rural Ireland who have no al-

ternative but to use fossil fuels.

“People in Dublin, who have Dublin Bus passing by their door every five minutes, will pay a fraction of the taxes that people in rural Ireland will pay.

“What we should be looking at in Ireland is a system of taxing fossil fuels which actually taxes congestion rather than consumption.

“We have to accept that 37% of our population lives on 96% of the landmass of the country in dispersed, rural communities. Solutions that work in places like Denmark, Holland and Germany, where there are very dense populations, will not work here,” he concluded.

Novel drive-through theatre in Ballaghaderreen Theatre-goers flocked to Sharkey’s Yard on Circular Road, Ballaghaderreen on Friday and Saturday last, where a local cast did a live, onstage performance of a reading of the Tony Award-winning play, The Beauty Queen of Leenane

The play starred Marie McDonaugh as Mag Folan (the cantankerous and contrary mother), Angela Beirne as Maureen Folan (Mags’ frustrated and fiery daughter), Joe Geever as Pato Dooley (a man in search of love and a more contented life), and Michael Donohue as Ray Dooley (Pato’s hot-headed and impatient brother), with Tommy Davey as narrator setting the scene.

you had to do was drive in, park up, tune in your car radio and sit back and enjoy the show.

Photograph: Mick McCormack. noisy crisps and popcorn bags, etc. One car had a picnic and there were a few glasses of non-alcoholic wine spotted, and some car windows were steamed up, making it difficult for the passengers to see anything at this thoroughly enjoyable Covid-friendly and socially distanced event!

Hopefully there is more to come from the inventive Julie Sharkey and her hard-working crew. It is initiatives like this that will get us through these long autumn and winter evenings!

Roscommon won’t be ‘in the dark’ this Christmas!

Given the difficult times we are living in, the Christmas Light Committee have already started work on getting the lights ready, to make sure Roscommon won’t be left in the dark this Christmas.

The work that goes on behind the scenes commenced a few weeks ago. Thousands of bulbs have to be checked, and repairs have to be carried out each year to ensure all the features are shining bright when they are switched on. Several new features have already been made by the volunteers, and some new features have also been purchased.

This will be a challenging year for the volunteers as everybody is conscious of social distancing and keeping each other safe.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Santa will be able to switch on the lights from the town centre, but he has been in touch with the committee to say we should be able to link up via webcam for the night of the switch on.

Keep safe, stay local, shop local and support the local economy.

Broadband hotspots hailed!

Deputy Denis Naughten has welcomed the fact that the first three broadband connection points in Creeve, Gortaganny and Tulsk have now gone live, providing high-speed broadband hotspots in those communities.

At the end of last month, the high-speed broadband connections at Creeve Community Centre, Gortaganny Resource Centre and Tulsk Digi Hub went live, and these connection points are now available to the public as part of the National Broadband Plan.

Deputy Naughten said: “These three locations are the first of fifteen across Roscommon and East

Galway. Others will be coming on stream over the coming weeks to provide communities with free, high-speed Internet access at publicly accessible sites, pending the delivery of fibre cable to homes”.

Senator Aisling Dolan of Fine Gael said: “This will make a big difference to the communities of Creeve, Gortaganny and Tulsk. During this pandemic, the majority of people are working from home and they need fast and reliable broadband.

Now they will be able to go to their local community, resource centre or a Digi Hub and have access to free high-speed Internet access”.

An ‘old chestnut’…fond memories of the golden era of conkers!

CONS & CONKERS: Frank… on how Michael D’s ‘bounty’ exposed a cunning and longrunning fraud; and how, during Cyber Break Week, it might be time to introduce the kids to the magic of conkers!

It’s a lovely, bright October Friday morning – although there’s a definite autumn chill in the air – and I am on my daily walk up the quiet country roads of Lenamarla, thinking of an almost forgotten pastime – the game of conkers.

As I walk, I am struck by the number of crushed chestnuts on the road, all smashed

to bits by the passing traffic. I realise that not once did I see a child stop to collect any of the fallen chestnuts, a far cry from when I was a young lad.

Back then, conkers was a sport that everyone could and did play. The thrill of beating your opponent and seeing their chestnut break into pieces under the incessant pressure you put on was just fantastic. It more than made up for the pain that was suffered when the occasional miss occurred, and the conker smashed into your hand or fingers.

Picking the right chestnut was a rare skill, and as in everything, big wasn’t always better.

Even so, the tendency was to get the biggest one you could find, and when you were laced up and ready for the fray, it would be far more

The real Twink?

It’s Monday evening, and while I normally wouldn’t spend too much time watching ‘Lodging with Lucy Kennedy’, I did tune in because her guest was Adele King, better known as Twink, a woman whom we have known (or at least Carol has) for more than 40 years. Of all the entertainers that have been at the forefront of the Irish entertainment world for so long, I don’t know anyone that has split public opinion so much, with many of her critics regarding her as too loud, brash, self-opinionated, and maybe even a little bit false.

For us, all through the years she has never seemed like that at all, but last night I think we saw the real Twink – a person deeply troubled by her constant battles to keep her house (a battle that she feels she is now going to lose), a woman who actually does care that so many people spend so much time criticising her – both privately and in the media – and a woman who, after 60 years entertaining Irish and global audiences, seemed somewhat unfulfilled, despite having had a hugely successful career.

I suppose one of her observations summed it all up, and that was when she said that entertainers just have to perform and cheer up the audience no matter how much trauma is going on in their own lives, which can obviously be a very hard thing to do. Nowadays, she is making fabulous cakes, which she sells outside her house to the public. She has her dogs, her parrot, and her two talented daughters, Chloe and Naomi.

She is also a very talented artist.

So as she heads towards her 70th birthday, I wish her well, and hope she manages to hold on to her muchloved house. After all these years, surely that is not too much to ask.

The disappointment when a crack appeared in your chestnut was immense, with every subsequent belt widening it further until there was nothing left. Your defeat left your dignity and pride in tatters until you got another opportunity to avenge your loss. Chestnuts were everywhere for a few short autumn weeks, so there was no problem in getting back in the game.

I had many hours of fun playing conkers, and many more bathing my hands from the unintentional belts that I got. So, as I’m told

that this is Cyber Break Week (which I think means children are asked to take a break from their computers, laptops, tablets and other gadgets), why not bring them out the country, locate a load of chestnuts, and let them find out for themselves the joy and pain of a game of conkers.

Back in those far-off days, we used to pass many hours picking hazelnuts, blackberries or blackcurrants (never knew which was which), and despite all the destruction of the countryside by machinery and fertilisers, there are still plenty of those to be seen.

So use this cyber break well: reconnect with nature, have a bit of natural fun, and maybe the computer will get more of a rest than it does now.

Bounty blues: Not such a happy (100th) birthday…

Everyone has different interests.

For me, aside from the obvious ones like sport and more sport, one of the things that intrigue me is crime. I often find myself watching some of the many telly programmes that investigate murders all around the globe, programme which try to get inside the minds of some of the most violent and depraved killers the world has ever seen.

However, murder isn’t the only crime that people commit. On last weekend’s Sunday World, the Sligo Chief Superintendent, Aidan Glacken, revealed that there are five major criminal gangs in the western town. The thing that caught my eye about them was their diverse activities: two of the gangs are involved in what I would have thought is the most lucrative area of all, the drug dealing business, but there is also a burglary squad that targets homes and businesses, another one that specialises in stealing farm machinery, and (finally) one that’s involved in cannabis growhouses, which is I suppose another branch of the drugs business.

Now, crime – by its very nature – hurts many people and leaves a trail of victims in its wake, but I have a certain amount of sympathy for a 57-year-old Cork man who was arrested this week for substantial Social Welfare fraud.

For 33 years he had collected his dead father’s pension, and for an unspecified number of years he had also collected the pension of his dead mother. In total, he

managed to get away with more than half a million, €520,000 to be exact.

He would still be going strong only for the fact that his father ‘reached’ the magic age of 100 years and qualified for the President’s Centenary Bounty – a payment of €2,540 and a congratulatory letter signed by the one and only Michael D. Sadly for our Cork man, the Department of Social Protection looked for proof that the father was alive – which must have come as an enormous shock – and when the son went to the Cork General Post Office on Saturday to collect the two pensions, he was arrested.

What will happen to him now, I have no idea, but even though he

defrauded us all out of so much money, I bear him no ill will. He didn’t kill or hurt anyone – all it took was two forged signatures to get his ill-begotten gains. He didn’t have to wear a balaclava or produce a gun, he didn’t frighten anyone, he supported the post office by having the two pensions sent there every week, and in comparison to the drug dealers, murderers, aggravated burglars and rapists who terrorise our society, he is nearly a saint.

However, not even he could get away with it forever – although he sure did have a good shot at it. What’s more, I bet that in his wildest dreams he never thought that Michael D’s Bounty would finally bring his run to an end.

Anyways, I will keep an eye out to see what happens him. I imagine he may get a couple of years in one of our mini-holiday camps.

Whatever he gets though, it will be nowhere near the 33 years since 1987 during which he got away with it at our expense.

Mind your money!

A couple of weeks ago I went to an ATM machine in Roscommon town – and was astonished to see a substantial amount of money still in the slot. I brought it into the bank in question and

handed it in, but I wondered to myself what could happen that would cause a person to forget why they had gone to the ATM in the first place, and walk away without their money. Anyway, if it was you, I hope you got it back, but next time, try to remember to take your hard-earned money with you!

And finally…

Finally for this week, a nice story to finish with. As you know, last week my daughter Lisa managed to walk down the aisle, and sticking with tradition we wanted to give her ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue’.

Our son Paul went in search of the old and blue bits. He was in a Roscommon shop explaining his requirements to the assistant, when a lady overheard him, and praised him for looking for such items for his sister. The lady left the shop, but to Paul’s amazement she arrived back a few minutes later and gave him a beautiful little posy of blue flowers that Lisa was delighted to incorporate into her bouquet.

It was such a lovely thing to do. If you happen to read this, thank you so much – these type of nice gestures are very rare, and it was really appreciated.

Fitzmaurice: ‘Arm works set to improve Castlerea’ Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice, (left), has welcomed the announcement of the beginning of the second phase of works at Arm, Castlerea, which will include the replacement of footpaths, drainage works, as well as a new road surface.

Cllr. Fitzmaurice said: “The footpath along Castlerea Golf Club is in poor condition and will be replaced in full. This will see 150 metres of new footpath which will make it easier for all pedestrians to use. Storm water drainage and grates will also be installed and finally the road surface will be replaced with a new macadam surface.

“While money for this work was allocated last year, it was postponed due to water mains installation.

Ducting for future traffic lights will also be installed at the Ballindrimley junction and I have campaigned for this work to be done during road restoration. This work will help improve our town and make the area a lot safer for all”.

Don’t allow Covid to curb your creativity this Hallow ‘Een I’m no fan of our government, however, I do feel that, due to economic concerns, their decision to forego a full-on Level 5 lockdown (at the time of writing, because it changes by the hour), was the right one to make. After all, the Level 3 restrictions worked well in Kildare, Laois and Offaly, and while the jury’s still out regarding Dublin, it does appear things are beginning to

stabilise. Mind you, Donegal hasn’t fared so well on Level 3; but that’s possibly due to the fact its closest neighbour, Northern Ireland, has seen a dramatic and worrying rise in Covid-19 cases.

I don’t know about you readers, but this whole health crisis has got me totally exhausted. I’ve become very distressed due to the fact I can’t travel to see my family in Dublin. In

addition, I’m concerned about my livelihood, and, with the challenges to our health system building by the day, I worry about what the winter months will bring. Although I will add that I do, and I always will, agree that saving lives over saving livelihoods is paramount.

Having said that, it hasn’t escaped my notice that the spooky season is upon us, and, despite the fact I

Seriously readers, I am so chuffed…you see, such praise, coming from the son of a great novelist, a playwright and essayist (John B. Keane), has rendered me to feel truly honoured. Proof again folks, (if it were ever needed), that your friendly, family-focused Roscommon People, which is written, edited and produced right here on your doorstep, continues to bring you the most up to date news, reviews and social commentary across the county…and the best part is…it’s all free!

I have a confession to make…

I’m a dental delinquent. Let me explain. I suffer from odontophobia, a crippling, irrational and extreme fear of going to the dentist.

My anxiety usually begins the second that polite appointment reminder arrives in the letter box reducing me to a babbling mess, leaving me teetering on the edge of throwing up…I liken it to getting an invitation to consume a poisoned meal.

There’s no real reason for my ‘phobia’. I mean, it’s not like I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time going to the dentist either as a child or as an adult, and it’s not like any dentist I’ve ever visited actually caused me severe pain. They’ve always used a local anaesthetic to numb the area – or to shut me up, I’m not quite sure which – and yet, I am never okay when I know I have to sit in that dentist’s chair.

Which brings me to last Wednesday and my visit to Doctor Eleanor Keaveney, a wonderful dentist based in Roscommon town. I arrived at Eleanor’s surgery with all of the enthusiasm of a disappointed movie buff realising they’d cast Russell Crowe as Javert in Les

Mis. Reciting hubby’s phone number over and over in my head… well, he is my emergency contact, (and yes, I know I was only having a routine check-up and a dentalclean), but I was so panicked, I thought my legs would give way as I climbed those stairs to the waiting room. What with the whine of the drill, the smell of the disinfectant, the sucking-of-pennies taste of blood in my mouth, was it any wonder I quite literally had an entire escape strategy all planned out?

But there was, and there never is, an emergency exit strategy needed when I visit Dr. Eleanor and her lovely nurse. Eleanor is always friendly, she’s always understanding, and she always asks me how I’m getting on. She understands the theatrics of Roscommon’s biggest drama queen standing right in front of her. She knows what it took for me to get to her surgery that day; she’s seen it before. She knows I wouldn’t be there unless it was absolutely necessary. She knows the second I sit in her chair how much the crippling fear – which has built up and increased sharply over the course of the morning – has now

risen so high I’m almost hitting the floor with panic. Eleanor and her dental nurse don’t even bat an eyelid when I start acting like the female lead in one of those Final Destination disaster movies; flailing, crying, and, in general, convinced I’m going to die an excruciatingly painful death…even though the poor woman only uttered the words “open wide Miriam”.

And yes, I’m a disgrace; in fact, to say I’m mortified would be an understatement. But Eleanor is a professional and tells me not to worry, she’s “seen worse”. I’ll bet she hasn’t.

And so, as I was delivering my Oscar-winning performance of a woman about to be murdered by a saliva ejector, the unflappable Eleanor managed to check my teeth, clean, polish and declare them healthy. Whew! And, despite my carry-on, this calm, professional woman invited me back for a sixmonth check-up and clean in order to keep them that way. Eleanor, you are a wonderful, understanding, non-judgemental human being…oh, and one hell of a dentist.

THE PAST REVISITED: National Library highlights photographs of Roscommon life Drivers and stable boys in Rockingham Stables; men relaxing on Hare Island, Lough Ree; a bustling Main Street in Roscommon Town and two workers on the 587 train in Ballaghaderreen are just some of the photographs of Roscommon digitised and freely available online from the National Library of Ireland (NLI).

As part of a new initiative entitled ‘Around the Island’, the library is inviting Roscommon people, and everyone with an interest in the county, to explore these images and others from home. ‘Around the Island’ encourages people across the island of Ireland to connect and reconnect with their counties and their history by accessing local photographs that are readily available through the Library’s rich and varied online collections.

In 2007, the National Library initiated a major project to digitise its collections of glass plate negatives. Since then, more than 60,000 images of Ireland and Irish

I hope that visitors to our online collections will find enjoyment in browsing local imagery from the past, while also learning something new about their county. I encourage Roscommon people, and everyone with an interest in the county, to spread the word about the Library’s online collections among family and friends and to visit the catalogue”.

Não sei o que é pior, falar de mais restrições sobre COVID ou a chegada rápida das noites escuras! Não faz muito tempo, eu estava falando sobre o quanto amo o Outono. A única coisa ruim sobre o Outono é que o inverno vem imediatamente depois.

Em um ano particularmente desafiador, a única coisa constante desde o início da pandemia foram os dias longos e as noites iluminadas. Quando o bloqueio começou em meados de março, as noites estavam ficando mais claras e os horarios longos avançariam. Três meses de bom tempo tornaram mais fácil lidar com as restrições que vieram com o bloqueio. Só de poder dar um passeio ao sol, ou passar algum tempo no jardim, foi um ótimo tônificante e algo que ajudou tantas pessoas que lutavam com restrições que foi estranho para à maioria de nós. Embora o verão não tenha sido particularmente maravilhoso, ainda tínhamos noites longas e secas para aproveitar.

Desde o retorno ao trabalho, escola etc., chegar em casa durante o dia tem sido agradável, mas logo isso também irá embora, à medida que as noites se aproximam e as longas noites de inverno se aproximam. Juntamente com possíveis restrições adicionais devido ao aumento do número de COVID, as noites escuras estão

se aproximando e eu, como tantos outros, absolutamente temo com essa possibilidade.

Esta é uma época do ano em que a solidão pode invadir a vida de muitas pessoas.

Mesmo sem uma pandemia, os meses de inverno podem ser muito difíceis e desafiante para muitas pessoas. Os que vivem em áreas rurais podem sentir-se muito isolados e os idosos enfrentam mais hora sem o contacto com a população em geral. Se as pessoas forem obrigadas a restringir suas viagens e possivelmente tiverem que se isolar novamente, isso terá um impacto ainda maior em tempos que já são desafiadores para elas.

Um grande número de pessoas que sofrem de depressão e outros problemas de saúde mental precisarão de ajuda e apoio, não apenas de serviços dedicados, mas também da comunidade em geral nos próximos meses. Os idosos precisam que o resto de nós fique atento a eles, para ver se eles têm o que necessitam. Todos nós temos a responsabilidade de cuidar dos vulneráveis na nossa sociedade e tenho certeza que este inverno será aquele em que o povo Irlandês se reunirá para apoiar uns aos outros como nunca antes!

Claro, eu não posso pensar no inverno sem pensar no Natal! Este ano será completamente diferente. Mais pessoas irão compras online. São poucos terão férias de Natal no exterior. Não haverá viagens de compras de Natal em Nova York, não que a maioria de nós já tenha tido essa oportunidade! Muitas famílias passarão o Natal sem a companhia de parentes próximos, algo que era quase desconhecido há apenas dez meses.

Se há um lado positivo em tudo isso (e sempre há um lado positivo!), É que o verdadeiro espírito do Natal virá à tona. Estar em casa com seus entes queridos, relaxar na frente da TV, assistir a um bom filme em frente a uma bela lareira quente, é algo que realmente espero a cada ano. Nossas filhas amam todo o calor do Natal ... elas ficam mais felizes quando as decorações e a árvore de Natal estão montadas, as músicas de Natal estão tocando ao fundo e o fogo quente as mantém aconchegantes!

Embora saibamos que será um Natal bastante estranho, podemos usar as redes sociais e aplicativos de comunicação para manter contato com aqueles que não podemos visitar, e isso ajudará a negar os efeitos que COVID pode ter em nossa época festiva, assim como nós fez durante o verão, quando as pessoas tiveram ideias engenhosas para se livrar da rotina do COVID!

Autumn musings

I don’t know what’s worse – the talk of further Covid-19 restrictions or the rapid arrival of the dark evenings! Not so long ago, I was talking about how much I love the autumn. The only bad thing about the autumn is that the winter comes immediately after.

In what has been a particularly challenging year, the one thing that was constant since the beginning of the pandemic was the long days and bright evenings. When the lockdown began in mid-March the evenings were getting brighter and the clocks were soon to go forward. Three months of fine weather made it easier to deal with the restrictions that came with lockdown. Just being able to go for a walk in the sun or spend some time in the garden was a great tonic, and something that helped so many people who were struggling with restrictions that were alien to most of us. Although the summer wasn’t particularly wonderful, we still had the long, dry evenings to enjoy.

Since returning to work, school etc., arriving home in daylight hours has been enjoyable, but soon that too will be gone, as the evenings close in and the long winter nights approach. Coupled with possible further restrictions due to increased Covid-19 case numbers, the dark evenings are sneaking in and I, like so many others, absolutely dread them.

This is a time of year when loneliness can creep into the lives of so many. Even without a pandemic, the winter months can be a very difficult and challenging time for a lot of people. Those living in rural areas can feel very isolated, and elderly people

face longer hours of reduced contact with the general population. If people are obliged to restrict their travel and possibly cocoon again, it will impact even further on what are already challenging times for these people.

The huge number of people who suffer from depression and other mental health issues will need the help and support over the coming months – not only from dedicated services, but also the general community.

Older people need the rest of us to keep a look out for them, to check in on them and see that they have what they need. We all have a responsibility to look after the vulnerable in society and I’m sure this winter will be the one when the people of Ireland come together to support each other like never before!

Of course, I can’t think about the winter without thinking about Christmas! This year it will be completely different – more people will shop online, very few will have a Christmas holiday abroad, and there will be no Christmas shopping trips to NYC (not that most of us ever got that opportunity anyway!). Many families will spend Christmas without the company of close family members, something that was almost unheard of just ten short months ago.

If there’s a positive side to it all (and there is always a positive side!) it’s that the real spirit of Christmas will come to the fore.

Being at home with loved ones, relaxing in front of the TV and watching a good movie in front of a nice warm fire is something I really look forward to each year. Our girls love the whole warmth of Christmas; they’re at their happiest when the decorations and Christmas tree are up, Christmas songs are playing in the background and the warm fire is keeping them cosy!

Although we know it’s going to be a rather strange Christmas, we can use social media and communication apps to keep in touch with those whom we cannot visit, and this will help negate the effects that Covid-19 may have on our festive season, just as we did during the summer when people came up with ingenious ideas to shake off the Covid-19 blues!

“In the long-term, there was decent funding made available for education, housing and healthcare, which should make for a robust economy.

“We do, however, have concerns around the long-term future of rural Ireland and SMEs. We feel the Budget was quite urban-centric and it was a missed opportunity for rural Ireland to have a bigger share of the pie”.

‘Budget abandons most vulnerable’

DEPUTY CLAIRE KERRANE Sinn Féin TD and party spokesperson on Social Protection, Claire Kerrane, has said the most vulnerable members of society have been abandoned in Budget 2021.

Speaking after Tuesday’s announcement, Deputy Kerrane said: “Budget 2021 has ignored very obvious key challenges faced by the most vulnerable members of our society – some don’t even get a mention in the Budget, others get mere crumbs from the table. Quite frankly, it’s too little, too late and totally abandons the very people who need support the most.

“As we navigate the economic crisis posed by Covid-19, we had an opportunity to invest in workers, families and communities. A Sinn Féin Budget

would have done so in order to rebuild our economy to be better, fairer and stronger. Instead, we have a Budget lacking in ambition, which fails to give workers the certainty they need and which abandons those who need help most”.

Deputy Kerrane was critical of the decision not to reverse the cut to the Pandemic Unemployment Payment and said further cuts would “plunge people into financial chaos”.

She added: “MABS have warned of a ‘tsunami of household debt’ pending with up to a million people set to struggle to meet their repayments.

There is nothing in this Budget to support these workers and families. These families are being abandoned at the time when they need government support most”.

She added that while the increase in Fuel Allowance was

welcome, it came with an increase in Carbon Tax, a PSO levy increase and an increase for Electric Ireland customers.

Deputy Kerrane said that the 15-month rule Fuel Allowance rule in relation to those on Jobseekers’ Allowance should also have been removed and that parents with newborns since Covid-19 hit require additional leave.

“The three weeks Parent’s Benefit announced will not be introduced until 2021 leaving parents with no option but to take unpaid leave.

“There are some positive measures in Budget 2021 from a Social Protection perspective however, the failure to address the most urgent challenges facing workers and families as they face into an uncertain winter allows those very challenges to remain,” she concluded.

‘A missed opportunity for a new economy’ DEPUTY DENIS NAUGHTEN Independent TD Denis Naughten believes Budget 2021 was a missed opportunity to bring about structural change to the Irish economy to make it more sustainable for all.

“While Budget 2021 talks about reforming motor tax and VRT, and further sets out increases of carbon tax up to €100/tonne, it fails to introduce these taxes in a manner that will drive change by focusing on congestion, and instead just looks at the consumption of fuel.

“This penalises 37% of our population, who live in rural areas and don’t have alternative modes of transport; those who are not having their broadband delivered quicker, and are not being provided with new supports to work remotely,” Deputy Naughten said.

The former Minister for Climate Action added that environmental taxes should lean heavier on those who have alternative transport and fuel options. He added that funding for the National Broadband Plan also remains unchanged despite references to an inter-departmental group considering remote working.

He continued: “Budget 2021 also talks about a ‘Recovery Fund’, but there is little detail of what it will do to reform our economy in a way that will help us live with Covid-19, allow more people to work and study remotely or support new ways of doing business.

“While the investment in housing is welcome, we need to encourage families living in our cities to give up their homes and relocate to rural towns and villages.

“There is also no doubt that additional funding has been secured for health and disability services, but it is vital that this funding is converted into the delivery of services to those who need them,” he said.

Deputy Naughten said that while funding Covid-19 funding has been made available across various sectors, it didn’t go far enough in preparing the country for a new reality post-Covid and post-Brexit.

“I think regardless of the Budget,

you are left to fight your own battles. Businesses in Roscommon are really supportive of each other and I think that as long as we keep supporting each other we will get more out of that than from any Budget.

“During lockdown I kept in touch with customers through the local media as well as social media and I have received great support since I reopened. The local media and the likes of LEO and Roscommon Chamber deserve huge credit for pushing Brand Roscommon”.

‘Middle and rural Ireland forgotten’ DEPUTY MICHAEL FITZMAURICE

Middle Ireland and those living in rural areas have been forgotten in Budget 2021, according to independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice.

Reacting on Tuesday, Deputy Fitzmaurice said: “While an increase of €179 million for the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s budget has been announced, how much of that will actually end up in farmers’ pockets?

“Almost €30 million is going toward additional staff and funding for Bord Bia in respect of Brexit and related infrastructure. €88 million is going towards Covid-related supports, with a €45 million beef scheme outlined as part of this. But this is just a re-branding of the BEEP schemes that have been

around of late, with an emphasis on carbon efficiency. “€79 million is set to be spent on new agri-environmental and other farm support measures, which will be aimed at farmers not currently enrolled in other agri-environment schemes. It is expected that €20 million of this funding will come from revenue generated from the carbon tax. But this REPs-style pilot scheme has been promised for months.

“While the roll-over of GLAS, ANC, BDGP and the Sheep Welfare Scheme payments is welcomed, the announcement doesn’t go far enough to support a sector which provides in the region of 300,000 jobs.

“I supported calls by Minister McConalogue, when he was in the opposition benches, for supports for suckler farmers but this has been forgotten about now that he has taken up his ministerial position.

“Whatever slight benefits farmers or the people of Ireland may enjoy will be far exceeded by the impact of the increase in Carbon Tax by €7.50 per tonne.

“The hike in diesel prices will leave farmers further out of pocket, as agricultural contractors will be forced to pass on the jump by increasing their own prices.

“This is all the more frustrating, given that rural Ireland and farmers will be asked to be at the forefront of reducing emissions and tackling climate change in the future when it comes to agri-environmental measures and acting as a carbon sink for the rest of the country,” he said.

Concluding, Deputy Fitzmaurice said: “For those living in middle Ireland, earning in the region of €30,000 per annum, there doesn’t seem to be any benefits”.

‘Budget 2021 offers hope after challenging year’ SENATOR EUGENE MURPHY Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy says Budget 2021 offers hope to communities following an incredibly challenging year for many.

Senator Murphy said: “Covid-19 has brought about enormous challenges for everyone. There has been no community in Ireland that has not been impacted by this virus. This Budget offers hope to these communities through investment in many important sectors of Irish society.

“In particular, I am pleased to see increases in the Fuel Allowance by €3.50 per week, €5 in the Living Alone

Allowance, and a €150 increase in the Carers Support Grant. There will be an increase in the Qualified Child Payment by €5 per week for children over 12 and €2 per week for children under 12.

“Crucially, the State Pension age will remain at 66, with the Commission to report by Summer 2021”.

Senator Murphy welcomed investment in housing.

“There is a generation for whom home ownership has felt unattainable. Next year we will see the biggest ever investment in housing, totalling €3.3 billion. I am delighted to see a suite of affordability measures in housing, this includes €110 million for a national affordable housing scheme. In addition, 9,500 new social homes

will be built, the single largest social housing building programme.

“In education, Fianna Fáil are committed to smaller class sizes for a better learning experience. New teaching positions will be created to bring the pupil teacher ratio to 25:1. There is will also be €120 million for reskilling and retraining opportunities. For third level students, the SUSI grant will increase by €1,500 to €3,500 and adjusting the eligibility income threshold.

“Budget 2021 is the biggest investment in the history of our State. It is coming at a time when lives and livelihoods need to be protected. I believe this Budget does just that”.

Basic Payment Scheme advances this Friday IFA Deputy President Brian Rushe says he has received assurances from the Department of Agriculture that the 70% advance on the Basic Payment Scheme will commence on this Friday, October 16th.

Speaking at a recent Charter of Rights meeting with the Department, the IFA Deputy President

said: “It’s absolutely essential there’s no delay in payments this year. All farmers must be paid their advance BPS on Friday. It’s critical that advance payments on uncompleted inspection cases are made next week, as previously agreed”.

On the LPIS review, IFA again strongly emphasised there can-

not be a repeat of last year’s delays. Brian Rushe also reiterated that with over 129,000 farmers making a Basic Payment application across all the schemes and the severe income problems from the Covid-19 crisis this year, it is absolutely essential that all farmers are paid on all schemes on time in line with the

deadlines in the Charter.

IFA Rural Development Chairman Michael Biggins said the timely payments of the ANC advance payments last month was welcome and he also stressed the importance of paying the remaining farmers as soon as they meet their stocking density requirements.

The Department confirmed that they are making ANC payments twice weekly and gave assurances to IFA that the remaining farmers will be paid their advance payment as soon as they meet the required stocking density.

Michael Biggins also stressed the importance of GLAS pay-

ments on time in November without any hold-up due to ongoing inspections.

IFA National Livestock Chairman Brendan Golden said that any issues with the BDGP scheme must be resolved and payments to farmers must be paid without delay in December.

Trade was brisk, resulting in a good clearance of lots. Prices for heifers averaged from €2.26 per kilo up to €2.86 per kilo, while bullocks ranged from an average of €1.94 per kilo up to €2.41 per kilo, and dry cows made from an average of €1.56 per kilo up to €2.06 per kilo. Purchasers were active both online and at the ringside.

Rooskey sheep farmer to feature on ‘Tastes Like Home’

Rooskey sheep farmer, Mary McGowan, and her daughter Lisa, will appear on next Monday’s (19th) episode of ‘Tastes Like Home’ on RTÉ One with celebrity chef, Catherine Fulvio.

Mary runs a sheep farm with her husband Tom and their son Ronan in Rooskey while her daughter Lisa works as a nurse in Vancouver, where she lives with her fiancé, Ian McCarthy, a doctor from Cork.

Lisa, a big GAA fan, who plays for the Vancouver Ladies team, misses home-cooked foods, especially her favourite, Roscommon Spring Lamb.

Her mother Mary teaches Catherine her recipe for a modern twist on the family favourite, complete with apricot barbecue glaze, roast vegetables with a couscous salad and harissastyle dressing.

Catherine then travels to Vancouver to try and replicate this dish by trying to find the next best thing to Roscommon Spring Lamb cutlets, in the hope of bringing a taste of Roscommon to Lisa’s home.

Lisa McGowan said of her experience: “I really enjoyed tasting a wide variety of foods with Catherine…for example just in our filming at Granville Island I had eaten a pickle, a Nanaimo bar and had a beer and all before 10 am!”

The Tastes Like Home episode featuring the McGowans will be aired on RTÉ One at 8.30 pm on Monday, October 19th.

Launch of IFA’s Guide to Covid-19 Credit Guarantee Scheme IFA National Farm Business Committee Chairperson Rose Mary McDonagh has launched IFA’s Guide to the Covid-19 Credit Guarantee Scheme.

“Primary producers in agriculture, horticulture and aquaculture are included under the scheme.

Sole traders, partnerships and private limited companies are eligible. The deadline for applications to the scheme is Decem-

ber 31st, so farmers must not put it on the long finger. The banks have this money at their disposal and are very keen to lend it out before the deadline”.

This €2bn fund is overseen by the Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland (SBCI) and benefits from an 80% state guarantee.

It facilitates low-cost lending to small businesses adversely impacted by the pandemic.

Borrowings can be used for working capital, investment or refinancing of Covid-19-related debt. Under this SBCI scheme, applications are made directly to the current participating lenders – AIB, Bank of Ireland and Ulster Bank.

“While an applicant’s business must be negatively impacted by Covid-19, the business does not need to be in a position of se-

vere financial distress. With that in mind, farmers should not be turned off by the eligibility requirement of a 15% loss to their actual or projected turnover/ profit as a result of the pandemic. Among other reasons, if you contracted the virus, suffered a drop in output prices, or were unable to sell livestock; you may meet the 15% eligibility threshold”.

Cortober, Carrick-on-Shannon Dear Editor, I feel it was very unfair of you (Paul Healy’s Week, Roscommon People issue dated 9th of October last) to compare the Healy-Rae brothers to Waldorf and Statler from The Muppet Show.

You say that Michael Healy-Rae is not great at taking criticism – you say this despite many unwarranted personal attacks on him from Ivan Yates and Marc MacSharry TD. In the 2016 General Election, both brothers romped home with a combined total of over 30,000 votes, and this year they repeated this feat with over 25,000 No. 1s. Go down to Kilgarvan and you will see that they ‘own the whole village’ and are successful businessmen.

They stood up to the ludicrous Shane Ross-

inspired drink-driving laws and shouted ‘stop’ to the neglect of rural Ireland. TV3’s Lucy Kennedy, Ciara Doherty and Ivan Yates have all acknowledged Michael’s good personality and hard graft which see him travelling 180mile round trips for Monday constituency clinics. Our two local Independent TDs have gone noticeably quiet, no longer appearing on TV3’s Tonight show.

Our national print media, who cocoon in Dublin 4, look down their nose at so-called ‘culchie’ TDs, yet none of those journalists would ever contest an election.

Paul, we elect candidates that have the courage of their convictions to go forward. We don’t see many journalists put their names forward or start new political movements.

‘Some evidence’ that Pat Doyle was an IRA volunteer Cill Tuama Co. Ros Comáin Dear Editor, A Eagarthóir, a chara: In the edition of this newspaper dated October 2nd 2020, a column

by An Staraí Áitiúil, entitled ‘War of Independence in Roscommon 100 years ago’, discussed the shooting dead of Pat Doyle, Drummin, Ballinagare on October 18th 1920, and the following statement was made: “It is believed that Pat Doyle had no connection with the IRA”.

There is certainly some evidence which points towards Doyle being an IRA volunteer.

In a report from the early 1950s compiled

by Officer Commanding (O/C) 2nd Battalion,

Castlerea Brigade, Gerald O’Connor, on the IRA attack of Frenchpark RIC Barracks, October 2nd 1920, it is claimed that Patrick J. Doyle (as Pat is listed in the 1901 census) of the B Company, Ballinagare, took an active part.

O’Connor, from Loughglynn, kept meticulous notes on men and IRA activity in west Roscommon, and his records were pivotal in adjudicating on the validity of pension applications by ex-combatants in later decades. He went on to become a Fianna Fáil Roscommon County councillor during the 1930s and 1940s.

In a listing of all volunteers attached to the Ballinagare Company as of July 11th 1921, O’Connor also includes ‘Pat Doyle’, with a note that he was deceased. Furthermore, in a newspaper report of Doyle’s funeral in the An-

The article in question was very informative and gives a clearer picture of events at this time, however I think it is important to highlight that there is strong evidence of Pat’s activities as a volunteer of the Irish Republican Army.

The ongoing saga of the rising water levels of Lough Funshinagh is an issue that needs to be addressed urgently.

In last week’s Roscommon People, it was stated by the IFA that “we were told by the men that twice this year, a film of blue algae formed in the lake as a result of dead vegetation and organic material trapped by the rising waters”!

Whoever these ‘men’ are, they are a bit disingenuous to say the least. In fact it is as a result of high temperatures occurring simultaneously with elevated levels of nutrients such as phosphates into the system.

This blue/green algae, which looks like pea green soup, is more a bacteria than an algae and is very toxic to dogs and cattle if drank.

The IFA need to get the lakes catchment farming community to mitigate the problem of phosphate surface run off from higher ground with less application of these phosphates, possible cattle slurry, and the use of ‘buffer’ zones with no application on sloping ground around the lake.

It’s not the politicians but the GSI expertise that will solve the problem. As it is a European ‘listed’ SAC site, the NPWS are also committed to forwarding solutions to the farming community and protecting the ecological integrity of Lake Funshinagh. Plastics can be obstructing the lakes exit hydrogeological subterranean channels (aquifers). We saw this problem on a large scale in Gort, Co. Galway some thirty years ago when there was an accumulation of used plastic in the aquifers.

Roscommon up to 7th in latest IBAL survey < DAN DOONER

Roscommon town has moved up fourteen places to seventh position following the first Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey since the Covid-19

crisis began. Kilkenny took top spot.

An Taisce, which carried out the survey, classed the county town as ‘Cleaner then European Norms’ in the ranking of 40 towns and cities nationwide.

Cllr. Kathleen Shanagher, a prominent member of Roscommon Tidy Towns Association, said Monday’s announcement was great news for the town.

“The judges visited two housing estates in the area

and the rankings acknowledge the work of residents in keeping their area clean.

“While Roscommon County Council is the leader in this, it is also an acknowledgement of the great work being done by the local Tidy Towns committee and Túas workers.

Roscommon has regularly featured in the top ten in the past – it would be great to improve further and win the ultimate prize,” she said.

An Taisce’s report for Roscommon stated: ‘A welcome return to the Top Ten for Roscommon, with nine out of the ten sites getting the top litter grade. The two residential areas of Ard Aoibhinn and Cluain Fraoigh were not just good with regard to litter but presented very well. The Main Street and Goff Street were also top ranking.

‘By far the most heavily littered site in Roscommon was the recycle facility at

Tesco – there were heavy accumulations of cans and glass bottles and jars and some broken glass’.

Cllr. Shanagher called on those using the recycling facility at Tesco to ensure the area is kept clean and safe.

“Unfortunately, the bottle bank at Tesco has let us down again. I would ask people to avoid leaving other rubbish, such as cardboard boxes, in the area.

“Also, if the bottle banks are full, please bring bottles, jars and cans back home or to another bottle bank,” she said.

Cllr. Shanagher added that free recycling of batteries, cooking oil, paint and electrical goods was available at the Roscommon Amenity Centre on the Lanesboro Road.

Overall, An Taisce deemed 23 towns to be ‘clean’, a fall of over 20% on last year. The number of towns reaching the highest

cleanliness level – Cleaner than European Norms – dropped by a quarter to nine, with Kilkenny edging out Athlone, Killarney and Portlaoise at the top of the rankings. While no area was branded a ‘lit-

ter blackspot’, North Inner City Dublin was once again seriously littered, as was Galvone in Limerick City. Meanwhile, former table-topper, Longford, was deemed ‘moderately littered’.

Covid leads to more dumping!

IBAL’s Conor Horgan said: “The Covid crisis has seen more dumping, more outdoor socialising, especially drinking, and PPE litter, but less cleaning by local authorities and less activity by volunteers like Tidy Towns”.

PPE litter was prevalent across the country, with masks five times as common as gloves.

Conor Horgan added: “Understandably, people are reluctant to pick up these items for fear of contracting Covid, so they tend to stay on the ground. We need to see a rapid rise in the use of reusable masks.

“In these exceptional times, when councils’ resources are stretched, civic responsibility is called for more than ever”.

Roscommon’s student entrepreneurs begin online road to national success Student entrepreneurs across Co. Roscommon have begun their journey in this year’s Student Enterprise Programme, with eyes on next year’s National Final. This Local Enterprise Office-run programme will be delivered differently given the current restrictions across the country, and the final, which will take place on Friday, May 14th 2021, will be a virtual one.

The students, who will compete across three categories – Junior, Intermediate and Senior – will see judging take place virtually via electronic submissions.

Each student enterprise is challenged with creating, setting up and running their own business, which must show sales of their service or product.

The programme will also

include two additional categories that students can enter. These are the ‘Most Creative Business Idea’ video competition for the senior category and the ‘My Entrepreneurial Journey’ category for the Junior and Intermediate categories.

The schools from Co. Roscommon taking part this year are Convent of Mercy in Roscommon, Scoil Mhuire in Strokestown, Colaiste Chiarain in Summerhill, St. Nathy’s College in Ballaghaderreen, and the community colleges of Roscommon, Castlerea, Boyle and Elphin.

Chloe McNamara and Eimear O’Connor of Pamper Hamper, also from Roscommon Community College, won the Intermediate category at the County Final. This business sourced and supplied luxury bath and body products in high quality recyclable packaging.

Both businesses represented County Roscommon at the virtual National Final Event held in May 2020.

Anne Browne, Local Enterprise Office said: “These are unprecedented times for students, and this year’s competition is giving them the opportunity to create businesses that can make an impact in the current real-world scenario. We are encouraging students to come up with business ideas that are adapted to the existing enterprise challenges and that are sustainable in today’s economic climate.

League leaders Armagh will go into Saturday’s top of the table showdown with Roscommon as favourites, according to BoyleSports, as Anthony Cunningham prepares to welcome back a number of familiar faces.

Armagh are 8/11 to get the win with Roscommon at 11/8.

You’ll get 15/2 for a draw.

Meanwhile, speaking to People Sport earlier this week, Roscommon manager Anthony Cunningham said the trip to Armagh would be

a tough assignment.

“This is a huge challenge for us. A win would put us in a great position with regard to promotion – but they are a good side.

They are progressing very well and have a lot of good, young players coming through. Make

no mistake; they will be very difficult to beat. They will be one of the favourites to win the Ulster Championship, but there is a big reward there for us if we win”.

Horses for Courses Busy weekend on the horizon with 2 meetings each day. There are meetings today at Tramore over the sticks starting at 1.10 pm and at the Curragh on the flat at 1 pm.

Tomorrow, in the afternoon there is flat racing at Leopardstown away at 2 pm and in the evening also on the all-weather at Dundalk racing on the level off at 4.45 pm.

On Saturday, the jumping fare takes place in the west at Ballinrobe at 1.05 pm and at 1.50 pm on the flat in Leopardstown.

On Sunday, the national hunt action is in Cork off at 1.35 pm and on the flat in Naas at 1.25 pm.

It’s Champions Day in Britain on Saturday at Ascot and Aidan O’Brien sends over his star mare Magical and she could be joined by Japan and Serpentine, who missed out on Longchamp over the contaminated feed affair. Last Friday in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile the Aidan O’Brien trained duo of Mother Earth and Snowfall carried each other’s numbers and intended riders.

Snowfall, a 50-1 shot, was ridden by James Doyle was declared 3rd but it was Mother Earth who carried Snowfall’s number and jockey. Snowfall was ridden by William Buick. Snowfall finished eighth of ten and not third as the judge’s result read. The mistake was noticed by the O’Brien team who reported it and not by the guardians of racing the British Horseracing Authority. Over to the suits, what happens now?

The men’s 18-hole Stableford last Sunday in Roscommon was won by Niall Reynolds with 45 points. Colm Walshe was second with 44, Ian Gannon was third with 43 and Enda Daly took gross with 40.

Sunday in Limerick proved costly for Jack Kennedy and

Davy Russell as both will missed a period of weeks when sustaining injuries. In the first, a novice hurdle, O’Brien’s Etincelle Loiterie came down 3 out and Kennedy, just back after an injury in February, is back on the injured list with a fracture to his collar bone and will be out for a few weeks. Russell was not so lucky when fracturing a vertebra at the base of his neck and will be out for longer.

Initial worries that the Down Royal meeting on the 30th and 31st of this month would be lost due to the new Covid-19 restrictions proved unfounded as racing is deemed an elite level sport. It seems that Downpatrick and all northern point to points are also exempt.

Colin Keane has drawn 5 clear of Shane Foley with a double at Cork yesterday in the race for the flat jockey’s crown.

He rode Sir Lucan for Aidan O’Brien and Starlight Dream for Matthew Smith. Foley rode one winner for John Joseph Murphy, Autumn Mist. Keane also completed a double on Sunday with Khartoum for O’Brien and

Helvic Dream for Noel Meade and Saturday on Alex D for Ger Lyons and Amlad for Andrew McNamara. Two winners for Ballymore, could this be the start of a drive by Keane to win the title which ends in four weeks Saturday?

Promotion push: Rossies Allianz National Football League Division 2: Armagh v Roscommon at The Athletic Grounds, Armagh on Saturday at 5.30 pm (game is live on RTE TV) < SEAMUS DUKE

Anyone who tells you that they know what will happen when the National Football League returns this weekend doesn’t know much about the GAA scene or team sport! Predicting the outcome of matches is fraught with danger at the best of times, but after what we have all gone through in the past seven months, we can only guess at what might transpire as Roscommon footballers make the long trip to Armagh in the latest chapter of an intense rivalry that goes back many decades.

A glance at the Division Two table shows just how tight the margins are. Both sides have accumulated seven points and are joint top of the standings. A win will propel the successful team to within touching distance of promotion to Division One. In fact there is so little between all the sides in this group that every county bar Fermanagh still has a chance of promotion.

With no form lines to go on, one can only speculate on what lineups will emerge. Roscommon have welcomed back Diarmuid and Ciarain Murtagh and players who were out injured like Conor Devaney, Sean Mullooly, Niall Kilroy, Shane Killoran, Andy

Glennon and Ultan Harney. They are all huge additions to the panel.

When you add in all the other regulars like the Dalys, Davy Murray, Brian Stack, Cathal Cregg, the Smiths, Colm Lavin, Ciaran Lennon and many more, it looks a very strong Roscommon panel.

Training has been going well and the team are very determined to return to the top table (in terms of league football) for 2021.

Armagh are an improving side.

They have had problems in recent weeks with a Covid outbreak in their camp – it meant they had to halt training for a week or so – but they seem to have overcome that problem now.

Armagh will have one eye on their upcoming Ulster Championship clash with Derry. On their best form, Kieran McGeeney’s side would be considered one of the dark horses to lift the provincial championship this year.

They have plenty of exciting young players in their ranks and are improving all the time. Even without the multi-talented Jamie Clarke, the Orchard County have Rian O’Neill, Stefan Campbell and Jarlath Og Burns in attack, players who would get on most inter-county teams in the country.

Watch out too for young Conor Turbitt, who has exploded on to

the team this year with some marvellous performances.

Further back, Niall Grimley and Oisin O’Neill are a very formidable midfield partnership, while in defence, Aidan Forker, Stephen Sheridan, Conor O’Neill and Callum Comiskey are expected to feature.

Roscommon and Armagh have had a great rivalry that extends back for many decades. GAA followers will remember the great battles between the sides in the late 1970s and early ’80, in both championship and league. In more recent times, we all fondly recall the championship classic in O’Moore Park in Portlaoise in 2018, when Kevin McStay’s side prevailed by 2-22 to 1-19 after a pulsating encounter in the scorching sun.

I know that the response of the Roscommon players has been excellent since training resumed and Anthony Cunningham has close to his very strongest panel.

Armagh’s preparations have been disrupted by the Covid problems and that might provide a clue as to the outcome. I am only going on a hunch – I could be as far out as a lighthouse – but I have a feeling that Roscommon will have the strength in depth to secure the win.

Prediction: Roscommon.

Captain Enda delighted with return to action < SEAMUS DUKE

By throw-in at The Athletic Grounds this Saturday, it will have been over seven months since Roscommon senior footballers kicked a ball in anger. It’s probably the longest break that we have experienced in many decades in the inter-county game.

This potentially daunting game against Armagh will go a long way to decide who is promoted to Division One for 2021. It will also be a welcome break for people from the 24/7 cycle of grim news about Covid-19, Brexit and other serious issues.

Enda Smith is once again the Roscommon team captain. The multi-talented Boyle man will lead the Primrose and Blue out on Saturday on their return to competitive action.

“We are delighted to be back in action. After all the uncertainty of the last few months it was good that the GAA has given the green light for the action to resume.

“I’m glad we are starting with the National League because it’s important that we get back to Division One. The training has been going well. We have a lot

of lads back who were carrying injuries and who were not on the panel earlier in the year so we have a very strong panel now, which is good. There’s serious competition for places now and you can only bring 26 players to matches under the new rules so that has made things even more competitive.

“We are back training about a month at this stage. It has all gone well but after such a long break it is hard to know how we are going or indeed how other teams are going! We won’t know until the competitive games start”.

Enda says the players are happy with the protocols that have been put in place under the Covid-19 restrictions. “Everyone is being very careful. Before training and after training every player is adhering to the rules. We all recognise that this virus is ‘deadly dangerous’ and that we need to follow the guidelines. If lads are not feeling 100% they just don’t come to training and there are no exceptions. We have been very lucky so far and hopefully that will continue to be the case”.

The Roscommon captain says Armagh will provide a huge test.

“They are a really good side and

they have added a bit of steel under Kieran McGeeney (manager). They blew Kildare and Cavan away in the earlier rounds.

We all think back to the match a couple of years ago when we got the better of them in the championship and I am sure they will have that on their minds. They want to be promoted to Division One as well. They will want to bully us in their home ground so we will have to be ready for that. Armagh are not just a negative team, they have a lot of very good, skilful footballers so we will have to play well to win”.

The absence of the Roscommon fans is a huge factor but there is some compensation as the game will be screened live on RTE. “It’s brilliant not only for Roscommon and Armagh fans but for GAA followers all over the country to have something else to talk about other than Covid.

There will be a build-up towards the end of the week and then there will be the usual chat afterwards. So while it’s not the same as being there, it is the next best thing. Hopefully we will give the fans something positive to chat about” he concluded.

On Saturday, Westmeath play Laois (I’m predicting a draw); Armagh face Roscommon, with a 5.30 pm throw-in. On Sunday, it’s Clare v Fermanagh at 1 pm; if it goes ahead, this should be a win for Clare.

Meanwhile, Kildare play Cavan at 2 pm. Kildare badly need a win in their battle against relegation and they may get it – but there won’t be much in it, as Cavan must win to keep up their promotion bid.

The challenges faced by inter-county team managements all over the country have grown since the advent of the coronavirus. There was almost six months of inactivity, and when training resumed, a

whole battery of new rules and regulations was introduced to keep players safe while they trained and played.

However, in common with the players, the management teams have embraced the ‘new normal’. When I spoke to the Roscommon

manager Anthony Cunningham at the weekend, he was rearing to get going again (in terms of competitive action) after such a long hiatus.

“We started back on September 14th, and under all the guidelines and restrictions we have been training away. It has gone well. We are training three times a week and are really looking forward to this big match against Armagh on Saturday. It’s a very difficult place to go to and win, but the lads have really knuckled down to training since we returned, and everyone is really looking forward to playing now”.

The return of a number of players has strengthened the panel. “The only lads we are without are Mark Richardson and Richard Hughes, who are injured. Ciarain and Diarmuid Murtagh are back in, and Shane Killoran is back training too. Ultan Harney, Sean Mullooly and Conor Devaney are back as well, which means that there is serious competition for places. We have two big games in the league now, and they will be great preparation for the championship game against Leitrim

or Mayo”.

Anthony says that Saturday’s match will be a tough one. “With all the restrictions in place, this trip to Armagh will be an assignment in itself. We hope that everything goes okay, and that the game goes ahead, but we have to be guided by the rules with regard to close contacts, etc. We have got great guidance from our team doctor Martin Daly in that regard”.

Anthony says that the Roscommon supporters are at the forefront of his mind and also in the players’ thoughts. “There is a big band of Rossie supporters who always follow the team, through thick and thin. We know that football brings great life and soul to so many people. The supporters cannot go to the match physically, but hopefully they will be able to see it on TV. We want to play well for all the people who give us such great support over the years”.

Anthony knows that Armagh will pose a serious threat on Saturday. “This is a huge challenge for us. A win would put us in a great position with regard to promotion – but they are a good

side. They were unlucky not to have won another couple of championship games last year. They are progressing very well and have a lot of good, young players coming through. Make no mistake, they will be very difficult to beat. They will be one of the favourites to win the Ulster Championship, but there is a big reward there for us if we win”.

The Roscommon manager acknowledges that it will be hard to pick the first fifteen for the two league games.

“We would love to give action to as many lads as possible over the next two games – in preparation for the championship – but we have to get our best team out on the field too”.

In the final analysis, a win on Saturday and promotion to Division One is the aim for Roscommon.

“Every win that we can get is very important, and that campaign starts on Saturday. We have no problems going to Armagh on Saturday, and we will be following all the protocols and regulations laid down.

Hopefully we can do ourselves justice and come home with a win,” he concluded.

Boyle stop-off: ‘We adhered to all guidelines’ < DAN DOONER Roscommon GAA chiefs are insisting that all Covidrelated guidelines were adhered to when members of the senior county team gathered in Boyle on Saturday.

Gardaí confirmed to the Roscommon People that they attended the scene and have commenced an investigation into potential breaches of Covid-19 regulations by the Roscommon GAA contingent.

Members of the Roscommon senior team and management were having a meal following a challenge match against Donegal in Sligo when Gardaí were called.

Social media posts had expressed anger that the gathering had taken place while the county remains under Level Three Covid-19 restrictions.

In a statement to the Roscommon People, Gardaí confirmed they had attended the gathering.

‘Gardaí attended at premises in Boyle, Co Roscommon on Saturday (October 10th) at approximately 4.30 pm, following reports of potential breaches of current Covid 19 regulations. Following engagement with Gardaí a group of people gathered in the premises agreed to leave. An investigation focused on the organisers of the event is currently underway’.

Roscommon GAA said they adhered to guidelines laid out under Covid protocols for elite level sports.

A statement from the County Board read: ‘Roscommon GAA are preparing to play Armagh on next Saturday in the National Football League Division Two. As part of the preparation our senior team played a challenge match against Donegal in Sligo on Saturday.

‘After the match was played the Roscommon team consumed a meal in St. Joseph’s Hall, Boyle where the members of the group sat socially distant and consumed their food.

‘Each action was carried out in full compliance with the Covid Protocols for Elite Sports. The Roscommon Senior Inter-County Football Team is considered an elite team under the Covid Protocols.

‘Roscommon GAA are committed to compliance and adherence to the guidelines as issued by both the Government and the GAA’.
