BURNING OF VEGETATION I would like to burn some overgrown hedgerows on my land but I am anxious not to fall foul of any law prohibiting this. I understand that I cannot burn vegetation at certain times of the year but I am not sure what dates are restricted. Please advise me.

Section 40 of the Wildlife Acts 1976 to 2012 prohibits the cutting, grubbing, burning or destruction of vegetation, with certain strict exemptions, from 1 March to 31 August during the nesting and breeding season for birds and wildlife.

Vegetation such as hedgerows and scrub is important as wildlife habitat and needs to be managed in the interests of both farming and biodiversity and therefore a review of the current legislation was initiated to ensure that it remains both effective and balanced.

Farmers may be considered ineligible for payment under Department schemes, including Basic Payment Scheme, GLAS and other area based schemes if vegetation on land is found to have been burned outside of the legal season.

The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has initiated many prosecutions in recent years relating to individuals for breaches of section 40 of the Wildlife Act for the burning of gorse and vegetation. Fines were imposed in all cases and said fines ranged from €50 to €600. In some cases, those prosecuted were ordered by the court to pay legal costs and expenses. Members of An Garda Síochána are also authorised officers to prosecute breaches of the Wildlife Acts.

Further, under Section 39 of the Wildlife Act, 1976, if you intend burning within one mile of a forest which you do not own, you must notify your local Garda Station and the forest owner, who has the right to object by counter-notice, at least seven days in advance, in writing. Failure to adhere to these rules may result in you being held responsible for the loss of a neighbouring plantation.

Feighan welcomes further €10.5m for Local Improvement Schemes A further €10.5 million in funding has been added to the funding already announced earlier this year for Local Improvement Schemes across local authorities. The announcement was made on July 14th by Minister for Community and Rural development, Heather Humphreys TD. Sligo/ Leitrim TD and Minister of State, Frank Feighan TD has warmly welcomed what is a doubling up of the

earlier funding announced this year.

Councillors across Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Donegal have in recent months expressed their hopes that the Government would try to find extra funding to meet the strong demand from people who live in rural areas including farmers who are on a long waiting list for their LIS to come around.

€1.168 million is allocated under this round of funding to counties, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Donegal bring a total allocation of €3,237,220 for 2021. Leitrim sees an extra €270,000 allocated which sees the county receive €540,000 for 2021, Sligo receives €276,154 with a total of €552,308 for this year.

Parking concerns raised at Ballaghaderreen meeting < DAN DOONER

Sinn Féin councillor Michael Mulligan has said that business owners and local residents in Ballaghaderreen have once again voiced their concerns regarding the proposed Public Realm Enhancement project for the town.

Cllr. Mulligan told the Roscommon People that a meeting had taken place on the Square earlier this week.

Speaking afterwards, Cllr.

Mulligan, who is the jointchairperson of the newly formed Ballaghaderreen Traders and Residents Group, which represents twenty-eight ratepayers in the town, said: “This was the very first opportunity

business people and residents were given to have their views heard on major changes to the Square in Ballaghaderreen.

Those present made it clear to councillors that at no stage were they consulted with on these plans.

“In fact, a number of people at the meeting stated that at a recent meeting in relation to these plans, their questions could not be answered by those involved. This was hugely alarming. Despite being stated on a number of occasions, the proposed plans for Ballaghaderreen have not been displayed – all we have actually seen to date are artist’s impressions,” he said.

The Sinn Féin councillor said the proposed loss of

parking spaces would have a detrimental impact on both local residents and commerce in the town.

“Anumber of comparisons with Boyle were made at the meeting, however it is important to note that Boyle lost eleven car parking spaces, and we are talking about fifty-four. We have an older population in the town, especially living on the Square, and they are expected to park in a car park at the bottom of the town and walk home.

They will have no parking at their home.

“Local businesses cited that fact that people will not shop with them where they have to carry heavy purchases down the town to a car park. People will simply go elsewhere,” he said.

Cllr. Mulligan added that nobody present at the meeting wished to prevent development.

“No businessperson, their family or residents wish to oppose development in our town, nor do we want to lose this funding for Ballaghaderreen, however, at the end of the day, our businesses are our livelihoods. A number of businesses on the Square have been clear that they will not survive if this plan goes ahead in its current form – and I use the word plan loosely as we have seen nothing more than sketches.

“We will do everything we can to work with Roscommon County Council to see this funding spent well, but we need to

€100k for community groups across Roscommon/ Galway Local TD Denis Naughten has welcomed the allocation of over €100,000 from the Covid Stability Fund for community groups across Roscommon and Galway.

“The funding will go to community centres in Loughglynn, Dysart, Drum, Gorthaganny, Moore, Caltra and Dunmore as well as Elphin Social Services and the Midland Branch of the Samaritans,” explained Denis Naughten.

“The funding is to help to support these groups as they have been unable to generate funds and fundraise over the last fifteen months due to Covid-19, and the allocation is based on the original application to Government for such support.

“This is very welcome funding for the groups involved, but there are many more community organisations struggling at present and the whole support mechanism needs to be reviewed due to the length of time restrictions have been in place,” concluded Denis Naughten.

Vintners’ Chair: Indoor reopening Roscommon Herald plans are ‘unworkable’ < DAN DOONER

Chairperson of the Roscommon and District Vintners’ Federation of Ireland, Larry Brennan has described the plans to reopen indoor hospitality as “unworkable” and said the burden to police new restrictions will fall on publicans.

The local VFI chair was commenting following Cabinet approval to allow those who are vaccinated or who have immunity from Covid-19 to avail of indoor hospitality. The new legislation is expected to come into effect no later than July 26th.

Mr. Brennan, who runs ‘Down the Hatch’ in Roscommon town, said he believed it would be safer to delay the reopening.

“The current plans are unworkable. I can understand the clamour for indoor trading

to resume, particularly for larger, more food-based outlets in tourist areas but it’s better if we open in a manner that’s safe,” he said.

Mr. Brennan said that small rural pubs would be under severe pressure when it came to the implementation of guidelines pertaining to Covid-19 vaccination certifications or immunity.

He said: “In small rural pubs it is going to be very difficult to police guidelines around vaccine certification. For example, if a local GAA, soccer or rugby team decided to come in after a match, would older people be allowed inside while younger, unvaccinated people are turned away?”

Irish Water moves to allay fears over local Famine burial ground < DAN DOONER

Irish Water have this week moved to allay local fears regarding ongoing works close to ‘Bully’s Acre’, an unmarked Famine graveyard just off the Antogher Road in Roscommon town.

A number of local people had expressed concerns that wastewater works being carried out in the area by Irish Water had disturbed the site, where it’s believed hundreds

of Famine victims were buried. The site was in use up until the 1940s for so-called ‘pauper burials’.

Yesterday (Wednesday), Irish Water moved to assure local residents that the site had been preserved during the laying of sewage pipes.

In a statement to the Roscommon People, the company said: “Irish Water and the contactor are aware of the historical importance of this site and the way leave

“We are currently progressing plans to install additional measures including fencing to ensure protection throughout the duration of the works. As part of this project we also have an archaeologist monitoring the works.

“Irish Water will continue to engage with and provide regular updates to the local community as the project progresses”.

Thursday I was unable to muster much more than a passing disinterest in today’s Dublin Bay South by-election.

Maybe I’m getting too old or too wise, or both. After decades of covering politics and elections, I’ve grown quite cynical about the whole circus, with its cast of revolving ringmasters, juggling charmers, assorted oddballs and canny tightrope walkers, not to mention the few clowns who excel in mayhem and chaos.

I’m not sure about buying into the excitable commentary that suggests Labour’s win threatens either of the two most recognisable ringmasters (Micheál and Leo). A solitary by-election loss won’t finish either man off, although the defeat is certainly embarrassing and damaging for both.

The national media reacted to Ivana Bacik’s triumph by piling the pressure on Varadkar and Martin.

There’s no doubt that Varadkar has mislaid his Midas touch in recent months, but suggestions of any threat to his leadership are, in my view, off the mark. I don’t expect Paschal Donohoe or either of the two Simons (Harris and Coveney) to be making an appointment with Louis Copeland any time soon.

Less secure than Varadkar is newbie Taoiseach Martin, although I don’t envisage any imminent move against him either. FF had a terrible day (4.6% first preference share). It’s a very noisy wake-up call for Martin and his nervous backbenchers, but, with respect to the very excited national media, a mid-pandemic coup seems unlikely.

Whatever one’s views on her staunchly liberal pedigree, Bacik is a politician of great ability and passion and she will be a positive addition to the Dáil.

Friday Many years ago, a week or so before some general election, the brilliant RTE broadcaster Rachel English cheerily breezed into our office in Abbey Street. It was, I think, the Roscommon Champion era.

Rachel (now also a very successful author) had arranged to meet me as part of a roving report on the mood of the electorate in our constituency.

The small talk done, she turned the gadget on, held the mic out, and asked me what the local issues of concern were.

After I’d mentioned Roscommon Hospital, unemployment, dwindling farm incomes and the decline of the west, I drew an unexpected blank.

At the time, there was long-running upheaval in Roscommon town, due to extensive roadworks at almost every turn.

“Eh…and the traffic…that’s a big issue too” I suddenly blurted out.

Just as the words spilled forth, I realised my stupidity. After all, Rachel had just driven to Roscommon from traffic-plagued Dublin. An absolute lady, she smiled/laughed at my comment, as I sheepishly insisted on a retake!

I thought of that amusing exchange today, while spending what felt like ages stuck in traffic on Circular Road. The major works ongoing in Main Street has led to long delays on Circular Road/local roundabouts. It’s probably not as bad as it was about two weeks ago. Still, it’s testing us all.

If it gets any worse, I may have to call Rachel…

Saturday Late tonight (early hours of Sunday),

Argentina defeated Brazil 1-0 in the Copa America final. It’s a big deal in those parts (as one commentator put it, an international footballer there can aspire to two major titles in their career – the World Cup and the Copa).

What was really significant about tonight’s final was the fact that Lionel Messi finally won a major honour with Argentina. The social media footage of the superstar sinking to his knees at the final whistle was emotional and heartwarming.

Messi (now aged 34) is arguably the greatest footballer who has ever played. One of the arguments against his claims has been the fact that he hasn’t won a World Cup (or, until now, a Copa). Of course Pele, Maradona and maybe even Cristiano Ronaldo also come into the reckoning. The debate will continue, and probably never end.

For now, it’s a privilege to have witnessed the astonishing careers of Messi and Ronaldo, both of which are marked by amazing goalscoring feats and remarkable longevity. I’m very much in the Messi camp. It was wonderful to see him achieve a major career ‘goal’ this weekend.

Sunday The Euro 2020 final wasn’t a great match – but it was an enthralling occasion.

I suppose we’re meant to enjoy penalty shootouts because they’re like a great drama – but since this is art that

invariably turns to tragedy, I’ve had enough of them.

Before the inevitable late-night heartbreak, we had a two-hour battle which was never less than gripping.

Shaw’s super 2nd minute goal for England came with the curious asterisk attached to such moments, i.e. it almost arrived too early. After all, if you insist on poking a bear while hoping to escape unharmed, it might be wisest not to do it at the beginning of a long visit to the zoo!

A team that was really confident about claiming the mantle of greatness – and its place in history – would have pushed on for a second goal. Instead – and understandably, given their youth and the pressure of the occasion – after a confident start, England began to retreat. Once a rattled Italy settled, they were always likely to punish England’s lack of conviction.

The second half was a procession of slick Italian attacks, the equaliser almost an inevitability. England, never lacking heart and honesty, stumbled under the weight of history. Bravely they hung on, the odd half-chance snatched at, while Italy relentlessly wove dangerous attacking patterns.

Extra-time, tired bodies, heroic tackles, the sense of the menacing shadow of a shootout closing in. When Pickford saved – giving England the advantage on penalties – an unlikely historic triumph suddenly seemed on. But the ghosts of past penalty traumas had lingered over the decades. Cruelly, it was

a miss by 19-year-old Saka (a star all tournament for England) which brought the curtain down on this drama/tragedy. There are questions for English manager Gareth Southgate, chief of which might be why he chose young Saka to carry that responsibility while Raheem Sterling and others stood as spectators on the halfway line.

We watched the penalty shootout in our house, all six of us hopping and shouting, gripped by the tension and high stakes. I think it’s an unfair way to decide the outcome of big games. I felt some sympathy for a fine English team, but Southgate’s conservative approach played into the hands of the Italians. I felt sorry too for all the decent English people who’ve been enthralled by this journey, who’d dared to dream. The despicable violence by some English supporters, and the racist online abuse of three of their players, leaves one despairing for the trajectory of elements of society there.

It was a great tournament.

Ultimately, Southgate and his players can hold their heads very high. Italy deserved to win.

They were the best team on the night, the best team of Euro 2020 too. Given the horrors Covid-19 brought to that nation, it was particularly poignant to see Italians smiling again.

Post offices must be given Government services to allow remote working – Naughten Denis Naughten has called for An Post to be given legal responsibility to provide Government services to those who cannot access online applications.

‘Hike to Hope’ raises €18,000 for local causes < DAN DOONER

‘Hike to Hope’, a fundraising hike from Malin Head to Mizen Head which was completed over sixteen days by Dan Magan and Micheál Duggan, has so far raised €18,725 for local charities.

The two men completed the 545km route in aid of Vita House in Roscommon town and Cian’s Kennels, a charity which was set up in memory of young Cian Neary, who sadly passed away in 2019.

Speaking to the Roscommon People after completing the walk last Sunday, Dan Magan said he and

Mr. Duggan were grateful for all the support they had received from supporters.

“We got on really well; I won’t say that it was easy but it was a great odyssey and we received fantastic support from our family and friends,” he said.

“My son Daniel has mental health issues so the whole family has used the services at Vita House.

We wanted to give something back because they have been so good to us.

“We would also have strong Kilashee connections and we know Cian’s family very well and Cian’s

Kennels is another very worthy cause.

“Our Gofundme page ‘Hike to Hope’ has so far received almost €19,000 in donations and money is still trickling in. We are very grateful for all the support we have received so far,” he added.

Mr. Magan said he also hoped the walk would bring much-needed awareness to the issue of mental health and the resources needed to tackle the ongoing crisis.

Colm Meaney stars in short film about local legend Lady Betty ‘Lady Betty’ is an animated short film telling the tale of Roscommon Gaol’s only female executioner. Narrated by a bickering pair of friends, Paddy (Colm Meaney) and Mick (David Pearse), this comedy/horror follows the story of Betty from her aching poverty, to her murdering her own son, and finally to her last years as hangwoman of the Old Gaol.

The film’s story writer, Lorraine Harton, found out about the mysterious character of Lady Betty while researching little known female historical figures in Ireland, and consulted with John Kerrigan of the Roscommon Town Heritage

to find out about all her contradicting and wild stories.

‘Lady Betty’ was produced by Dublin-based production company Whackala. It was funded

by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland and RTÉ under their Frameworks animation scheme, previous recipients of which include the Oscar nominated ‘Late Afternoon’. It was directed by Paul McGrath, produced by Leticia Agudo, and the screenplay was written by Bobby Moloney.

The film will be screened at the Galway Film Fleadh, both online and in person, on July 23rd and 24th. See galwayfilmfleadh.com for details.

“What is most frustrating is that three years ago, the Government took the decision to put more State work through the post office network. However, since then, the only action we have seen on this is a committee, report, and another committee.

“I believe we need to give An Post the legal responsibility to provide these services to the public as it seems that will be the only way Government will act in the best interest of efficiency and improving access to services locally,” Deputy Naughten concluded.

5th Blue Star flag for St Mary’s, Strokestown!

Fifth and Sixth class pupils of St. Mary’s Primary School, Strokestown celebrated a wonderful achievement on Wednesday, June 23rd as they raised their fifth Blue Star flag and received an award for successfully completing the Blue Star programme for five years. Sixth class pupil Grace King was very proud to raise the Blue Star flag for the school.

The Blue Star programme aims to foster a better understanding of the European Union and European cultures through creative activities and classroom projects that complement the Primary School curriculum. The programme helps pupils to understand the foundation and development of the EU, its cultural and linguistic diversity and how the EU affects the lives of Irish citizens. Senior pupils also learn French as part of this programme.

Each year the school celebrates Europe Day around May 9th. Europe Day celebrates peace and unity in Europe. Pupils and teachers usually organise a European show and Food Fair to celebrate Europe Day. Unfortunately this couldn’t happen this year due to

Roscommon Daily Million player claims €1m top prize!

The Roscommon Daily Million player who scooped the top prize of €1,000,000 in the draw on June 16th has officially claimed their prize. The winning ticket was purchased at Casey’s Service Station on the Athlone Road for the draw last month.

The county’s new millionaire, who wished to remain anonymous, was over the moon when they realised their luck: “I was at home having a cup of tea when I heard that the top prize had been won in the 9 pm draw and as soon as news broke on where the winning ticket was sold, I checked my ticket straight away. I scanned it on the phone and of course got the message to say that I had won big.

“This is definitely the biggest prize I have ever won and I’m still a bit shocked so I think it might take a while for the news to really sink in to be honest,” the winner said.

5th and 6th class girls from St. Mary’s Primary School, Strokestown raised the fifth Blue Star flag for their school recently with Caitriona Brehony (Blue Star Coordinator) and Teresa McCormack (SNA).

Covid-19 restrictions.

Ms. Brehony, French teacher and Blue Star Coordinator invited Maria Walsh MEP to join the Europe Day celebrations on Zoom again this year. On Wednesday, June 3rd, Maria spent an hour on Zoom with Fifth and Sixth class pupils. Each pupil got the opportunity to present a summary of their project on the

EU country they studied during the year and they proudly held the flag of the country. Every pupil had questions prepared for Maria.

Maria Walsh was very impressed with the pupils’ level of knowledge and understanding of the EU and she really enjoyed their presentations on the European countries. She was also impressed with the way the

pupils introduced themselves in French.

She advised the pupils to continue learning European languages because the ability to speak and understand languages enables people to travel and work worldwide. Maria spoke to the pupils about her work in the European parliament in Brussels. She highlighted the importance of prioritising

mental health in the EU. Maria also discussed her experience of being a lady in politics. Maria is very proud of her native home in Shrule and she encouraged the girls to rally behind Mayo for Sam this year!! The pupils were overjoyed when Maria granted them a homework pass!

‘Angels’ street performance in Roscommon Fregoli Theatre will present ‘Angels’ a street performance in Roscommon town at 12 pm on Thursday, August 5th.

The 30-minute outdoor performance is inspired by the idea of re-imagining home and familiar spaces through the eyes of five angels who drop to Earth. The project looks and experiences these places with new eyes, and takes wonder in the details. The Angels have never been in a world like this before and their wonder and marvel may inspire the same in the audience. The Angels will move, dance and make sound and communicate joy, wonder, and excitement throughout the town!

As part of Boyle Arts Festival, Fregoli Theatre will also present Castle Island Tales, an online audio production (available on www.roscommonartscentre.ie) inspired by the magical setting of McDermott’s Castle in Lough Key from Thursday, August 3rd.

As the Twelve return from their first missionary journey in today’s Gospel, our readings continue to reflect on the authority and mission of the Church.

Jeremiah says in the First Reading that Israel’s leaders, through godlessness and fanciful teachings, had misled and scattered God’s people. He promises God will send a shepherd, a king and son of David, to gather the lost sheep and appoint for them new shepherds (see Ezekiel 34:23). The crowd gathering on the green grass (see Mark 6:39) in today’s Gospel is the start of the remnant that Jeremiah promised would be brought back to the meadow of Israel. The people seem to sense that Jesus is the Lord, the good shepherd (see John 10:11), the king they’ve been waiting for (see Hosea 3:1–5).

Jesus is moved to pity, seeing them as sheep without a shepherd. This phrase was used by Moses to describe Israel’s need for a shepherd to succeed S DOYLE & SONS him (see Numbers 27:17). And as Moses appointed Joshua, Jesus appointed the Twelve to continue shepherding His people on earth. Jesus had said there were other sheep who did not belong to Israel’s fold but would hear His voice and be joined to the one flock of the one shepherd (see John 10:16).

2060848 In God’s plan, the Church is to seek out first the lost sheep of the house of Israel and then to bring all nations into the fold (see Acts 13:36; Romans 1:16).

Paul, too, in today’s Epistle, sees the Church as a new creation, in which those nations who were once 01/06/2021 far off from God are joined as “one new person” with the children of Israel.

29/06/2021 As we sing in today’s Psalm, through the Church, the Lord, our good shepherd, still leads people to the verdant pastures of the kingdom, to the5restful waters of baptism; He still anoints with the oil of confirmation, and spreads the Eucharistic table before all people, filling their cups to overflowing.

Public urged to protect national heritage sites The Office of Public Works (OPW) and the National Monuments Service have recently launched a new campaign entitled ‘Protect Our Past’, highlighting the need for visitors to Ireland’s heritage sites and monuments to be mindful of their actions this summer.

The campaign was launched by Minister for Heritage and Electoral Reform Malcolm Noonan and Minister of State with responsibility for Public Works Patrick O’Donovan, and is aimed at reminding people of the importance in protecting our country’s unique archaeological and architectural heritage sites, many of which are extremely vulnerable.

Why I cheered for Italy last Sunday night...

Our man Frank on supporting the Italians, the continued rise in fuel prices for motorists, a caution ahead of indoor dining and some good news from granddaughter Riley…

It’s Sunday evening, and in common with millions of people all over the world, I am watching the final of the 2020 European Championships. As I jump around and roar and shout when the Italians get the equaliser, and then go on to win the tournament on penalties, I begin to ask myself why am I so unashamedly supporting them?

I have never once in my seven decades on this planet (don’t like saying seventy as that makes me sound old)

set foot on any part of Italy. I don’t know very many Italians except maybe Onorio (of Norio’s Takeaway in Roscommon town), and of course Sergio Benedetti, who had the good sense to marry a Creggs woman, Marie Whyte. Yet, when the chips were down (sorry, Onorio!) there I was cheering them on as if I myself was born in Sorrento, Naples, Milan or Rome. And when the last English penalty was saved on Sunday evening, it was nearly as exciting as Packie Bonner’s unforgettable save way back in Italia ‘90. As I reflected on it after the full-time whistle, I realised it wasn’t always like this.

Back in 1966, when England last won the World Cup, I was 100% behind them, and as I’ve mentioned before, my Germany-supporting Dad and I had a major falling out over the result. Of course looking back now, I realise that while I was only fifteen years of age, having sat my Interme-

diate Cert that summer, I was only interested in the soccer match for the sake of soccer. My father on the other hand would’ve remembered the horrific actions of the infamous Black and Tans from his childhood days, and for him, the World Cup was about much more than football – it was a chance to have anyone put one over on the English.

So what has changed for me? The days of the Black and Tans are now 100 years ago, and while their actions remain horrific, a friend of mine said to me last night that it was time for Irish people to move on. As he said it, I began to see that the reason for my big change had nothing at all to do with history, nothing at all to do with this English team – all of whom seem to be decent young men with a highly thought of and genuine manager – but all to do with the behaviour of a certain section of their supporters.

Return of indoor dining – but is it safe?

I am writing this on Monday evening, and it looks as if indoor dining will be returning fairly soon for all of us that have been lucky enough to be doubly vaccinated.

Until today, I would’ve been looking forward to being able to sit inside and have a pint and a nice, well-done lump of steak. However,

my confidence took a bit of a rattle (although not enough to stop me trying the new rules out) when I read in a national paper that we have one person in ICU, even though they’d been fully vaccinated. Now, there were no other details released so my information is pretty sparse, but the very fact that such a thing

could happen is a little concerning.

However, the odds are very slim, and as a man who has done the same numbers, week in week out, for the last twenty or more years in our lotto without beating the odds, I assume my luck won’t change – hopefully, and I won’t beat these odds either.

in England began in the nineteenth century, hooliganism has been part and parcel of its set-up. It reached a peak in the seventies and eighties, when barriers were erected at nearly every football ground, and when it was pretty much deemed to be unsafe to even attend the games.

Admittedly, things are much better now, and indeed, even some Italian clubs are followed by groups of organised troublemakers, but this week, when the English fans booed the Danish national anthem in their semi-final tie, and then the Italian one on Sunday night, it left a very sour taste in the mouths of genuine football followers. Social media footage of riots and mayhem on the streets of London - during which 19 police officers were injured - is a huge indictment of the English supporters.

While I acknowledge that it is only a very small minority who are involved, nonetheless they tarnish the

good name of English football, and their behaviour is the main reason that I have switched my soccer allegiance.

Who will ever forget the planned, organised riot that the English hooligans carried out in Lansdowne Road in 1995 during a friendly match, when a group called Combat 18 managed to get several of their members into the ground, and literally wrecked the West Stand. Every possible article, including seating, poles, bottles, and masonry, were thrown at the Irish fans and it was one of the darkest nights of Irish sporting history.

And so, as the Italians celebrate their fabulous win (as it happens I think they were the best team anyway), I sympathise with the very young English team who did themselves, their families and their country proud – but I can never sympathise with so-called fans who show no respect to their opponents’ national anthems.

Irish fuel prices continue to rise!

Some weeks ago, a concerned reader of this column asked me to highlight the continued rise in the price of petrol and diesel. This week I decided to do a little digging, and the picture for the motorist makes pretty bleak reading.

Since July of last year, when we were paying an average of €1.17 a litre for diesel, it has risen to an average of €1.42, an increase of almost 22%, and continued rises are predicted. What amazes my reader, and now me, is why there is no outcry from the AA, or more surprisingly, the Road Haulage Association.

On the assumption that loaded artic lorries only do eight or maybe nine miles to the gallon and sometimes less, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the huge rise in diesel prices must also mean a huge rise in hauliers’ costs. Why there is almost complete silence on the subject beats me.

Doing a very simple exercise, if prices were to go up again by 22% in the coming year, we would then be paying €1.75 per litre of diesel –ask yourself what impact that would have on your household budget. Looking at European prices, we are far and away the dearest for petrol and diesel, with only Italy any way close to us – and even their prices are still 8c a

litre lower than ours, while a litre of diesel in Spain is about 34c cheaper.

We have always known that being a motorist in Ireland means you are one of the most taxed (if not the most taxed) drivers in the world, but surely someday soon we have to ask where it will all end and how soon will it become unaffordable to maintain a family car?

You may recall that last week, I told you about our little baby granddaughter Riley, and the rough time both she and her mother Lisa have had over the last three months. The good news is that after visiting them over the weekend, both are improving, and hopefully things are beginning to take shape.

Many thanks to all the people who have told us they are offering prayers for their wellbeing. It is very heartening to know there are so many good people out there.

Fitzmaurice: Government needs to offer real protection for children online Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice has called on the Government to protect the online safety of children with “tough deeds rather than soft words”.

Deputy Fitzmaurice made the comments following a launch by the Children’s Rights Alliance of a new online safety campaign.

“Our children face ever more serious threats to their innocence in the new digital age.

“Even within the outward safety of the four walls of their homes there is an ever-present threat. This makes it all the more important that practical action is taken to protect our children,” he said.

“The Government has pledged to set up a well-resourced Online Safety Commissioner with an independent, individual complaints mechanism for when online platforms fail to deal with an individual’s complaint adequately or appropriately. The Children’s Rights Alliance has

claimed that instead we are getting an Online Safety Commissioner in place with no teeth.

“This is all too typical of an administration that always takes the choice of light touch regulation when it comes to the powerful. The Government should stand up for

Deputy Chief Medical Officer raises Roscommon Delta concern < DAN DOONER

Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Ronan Glynn, took to social media this week to raise concerns over the rise in Delta variant cases in counties including Roscommon.

In a video posted on Twitter on Monday last, Dr. Glynn said the proportion of cases linked to the variant had increased rapidly over the last four weeks, from 5 percent of cases in early June to around 70 percent of cases currently.

“So far, some parts of the country have been more affected than others, including Donegal, Waterford and Dublin, but we are also seeing high or increasing incidence in Sligo, Limerick, Roscommon and Meath,” he said.

Roscommon currently has the eighth highest incidence rate of Covid-19 in the country, and between July 5th

Lough Ree RNLI rescued six people from 46-foot cruiser which had run aground west of Beam Island near Hodson Bay on Monday afternoon.

Lough Ree RNLI rescued six people from 46-foot cruiser which had run aground west of Beam Island near Hodson Bay on Monday afternoon.

The Lough Ree RNLI lifeboat ‘Tara Scougall’ launched shortly after midday and quickly reached the scene east of Hodson Bay to assist the stranded cruiser.

Having completed an initial assessment, crew members towed the vessel off the rocks and following safety checks, allowed the cruiser to continue under its own power.

Monday’s incident brings the number of people rescued

by Lough Ree RNLI in the past five days to fourteen.

On Friday of last week, a cruiser with five people on board was towed off the Hexagon Shoal, north of Hare Island. Shortly after, the volunteer lifeboat crew were diverted to assist a cruiser which had suffered engine failure with two people on board.

Following another busy weekend, Lough Ree RNLI treasurer Vincent Rafter thanked all members of the public, businesses around the lake and the lake community for the on-going support of the charity as work nears completion on a new €1.2 million boathouse at Coosan Point, which he said would “greatly enhance the service which Lough Ree RNLI currently provides”.

Fine Gael councillor John Naughten has called for verge trimming to take place throughout the county in order to address road safety concerns.

“I will be raising the issue to request that Roscommon County Council make adequate provision for verge trimming throughout the county over the coming months,” he said.

“A lot of the verges are now significantly overgrown and are a hazard to pedestrians and road users, particularly at junctions.

“This is particularly important on the local road network where junctions are seriously overgrown with vegetation and are in urgent need of attention to ensure the safety of motorists, pedestrians and cyclists,” Cllr. Naughten concluded.

Ros FM appoints new station manager The Board of Directors at Ros FM has announced the appointment of Seamus Duke as station manager, effective from Monday 12th July.

A statement read: ‘Seamus has vast experience in the radio and local media industry and we are looking forward to working with him over the next few years. We acknowledge the superb work of the volunteers at the station over many years and remind the public that new volunteers are always welcome.

‘The board wish to thank POBAL for their funding of the manager’s position and also the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and CRAOL for their help and support. A special word of thanks also to Roscommon Leader Partnership who supplied expert help in our application.

‘The board also welcomes the appointment of Louis Fargo as technical assistant’.

The local radio station is expected to appoint an administration and accounts assistant in the coming weeks while a new schedule of programmes is also in the works.

Volunteer Centre shines light on our civic reawakening!

Staying on the subject of good news, can I say a big ádh mór (good luck) and well done to the Roscommon Volunteer Centre, whose new offices are located in the centre of our county town. I know that readers and community-focused organisations will agree with me when I say it was about time this county got itself a dedicated volunteer centre.

Nobody knows more than me – given my background working in animal welfare, education/literacy initiatives, prison programmes and working with those coping with and surviving domestic violence – just how vital it is for volunteerism and civic involvement to not just be alive, but to be promoted, highlighted and nurtured.

Well done and the very best of luck to the management, staff and the board – and of course to the volunteers themselves working at this centre. I have no doubt that in no time at all your contributions will serve to shine a light on the civic reawakening that, as a direct result of the effects of this widespread and devastating pandemic, is currently happening right across County Roscommon, and indeed across the nation overall.

Thank you to the community-focused Fleming family and its customers!

As we’re all facing increasing social and economic challenges due to the effects of this pandemic, it’s well known that charities, and indeed animal welfare charities, are having a very difficult time due to not being able to hold fundraising events.

With that in mind, I’d like to name-check if I may, and say a big thank you to family business Fleming’s SuperValu in Roscommon town. The management and staff are kind enough to allow local charity TNR South Roscommon to pop a basket into the shop so that kind customers, if they wish, can buy a tin/bag of cat food and donate it so that volunteers can continue to feed the beautiful feral kitties in the area. These kitties have been spayed/ neutered through the TNR charity, but they also depend heavily on them for food in order to help them to survive and thrive.

On behalf of Orla Hanley, the TNR South Roscommon volunteers and myself, thank you so much to the community-focused Fleming family, their staff and their lovely customers for filling this basket. God bless you, and long may your kindness towards these little ferals continue.

This week I’d like to say a big congratulations and well done to Roscommon People freelance reporter Seamus Duke on becoming the new manager at local community radio station RosFM. I am absolutely thrilled for Seamus and his family, especially as he has commented himself many times on his Facebook page about how this pandemic and all it entails has been rough on everyone. I second that sentiment Seamus, because those of us working in the media, TV and radio industries have been hit very hard, as of course have many industries.

That’s why this week, when Seamus made his announcement on Facebook, I was delighted to read not just a good news post, but also one that related to a good, decent, hard-working family man.

Well done Seamus – I am certain that the future of our community radio hub will go from strength to strength in your capable hands. Comhghairdeas!

MMA fighter Conor McGregor

McGregor: Humble hero or minted hoodlum? You decide!

Anyone who knows me knows how enormously proud I am of my Dublin roots and of my socalled flat Dublin accent. Yeah, I’m what we on Dublin’s Northside, and those in the north inner city where I was born, would call a ‘how’er’ya’. You get it – I’m a true blue Dub. However, when I heard locallad-done-good, fellow Dub and MMA fighter Conor McGregor threatening a journalist whose pre-match comment he didn’t like, by saying, “Shut your mouth or I’ll go down [there] and smash your nose in”, further adding, “I’ll smash your nose in you little rat. Someone smack him!” I have to say I was appalled. I was also embarrassed to be associated with being a Dub! Bad as that threatening trashtalk was, it was nothing compared to McGregor’s sickening post-fight behaviour where he

targeted his opponent Dustin Poirier’s wife by shouting, “Your wife is in my DMs. Hey baby, hit me back up on chat later on”. Adding insult to injury, this misogynist further ranted about meeting his opponent’s wife at an after-party.

Yes, McGregor had lost the fight, so naturally he was enraged. Yes, he was frustrated, and yes, he was in pain following his injury, but there was no need for such a disgusting show of disrespect for a fellow sportsman and his wife.

Had McGregor been a true sportsman, he would’ve congratulated Poirier, challenged him to another fight, and then shut his mouth. But no, it seems that when he’s not punching his elders in the face in a pub – remember he pleaded guilty to assaulting a man who refused a free shot of his ‘Proper 12’ whis-

key back in 2019 – McGregor is verbally insulting and disrespecting women.

I can only wonder what his sons and daughter will think of daddy when they’re old enough to watch his on-stage antics on social media. I wonder what his lovely partner Dee, the mother of those beautiful children, thinks of his post-fight carry-on.

Does she view her babies’ daddy as being a positive role model?

Who knows? Then again, perhaps McGregor really is a gracious, humble softie behind closed doors? Yeah, right!

Here’s the thing, if any male in my family spoke about any woman in the same monstrous manner in which McGregor spoke about Jolie Poirier, I’d be apoplectic, and by God would they know it!

I remember a time when McGregor’s genuine-nice-

bloke persona and his infectious accent and banter would draw many people to him, willing him on and wishing him well.

However, following last weekend’s tirade, I fear his career and reputation has not just been badly affected; they’ve been left in tatters.

When I look at McGregor’s rise, and let’s face it, fall, and his changing behaviours down the years, it’s my opinion that as the bank balance began to grow the genial joker disappeared, giving way to these dangerous and sinister patterns of aggressive behaviours displayed toward anyone who disagrees with him.

Add to that McGregor’s public ambivalence and blatant disregard for women, and all you’re really left with is a defeated coward, masquerading as a hoodlum with a slick haircut and designer suit – oh, and wads of dosh!

Restoration of the Old Barracks With the welcome news of the decentralisation of the General Register Office to Roscommon town a suggestion has been put forward that the Old Barracks (located at Ardnanagh) would be the ideal location. This would mean a complete restoration and refurbishment of the building.

However, considering Roscommon County Council’s excellent record in this area, and bearing in mind the magnificent restoration of our County Library, this would only be in line with its established policy of preserving our old buildings.

Talk 13th November, I gave a brief outline of the history of the Old Barracks. As stated on that occasion, it is the oldest authenticated building in Roscommon, being built in 1702.

Roscommon has a record to be proud of in the utilisation of our historic buildings. Apart from our County Library there is the Bank of Ireland and the Old Gaol, these are also mideighteenth century buildings serving the community. The restoration of the Old Barracks would be totally in accord with this proud record, and what more fitting manner to celebrate its tercentenary in the ten years’ time in the new Millennium.

Local stonemason creates Ó Connaire replica

Dear Sir, I would be grateful if you were to republish a news item of mine from the Roscommon Champion (December 4th 1992), almost thirty years ago, regarding the restoration of the Old Barracks at Ardnanagh (near Lisnamult). I was then correspondent with a weekly feature titled Town Talk. The suggestion came from David Molloy and I was totally behind it.

I am happy to report that some progress has been made in recent years and

Roscommon County Council has gone to considerable expense to safeguard the barracks. There is renewed interest in the restoration of this truly historic building with the support of Councillors Orla Leyden and Kathleen Shanagher.

Lots of suggestions have been put forward as to how this would be achieved.

Personally, I have an open mind on the matter as long as a practical solution is implemented to safeguard it future.

Last year, Roscommon town native, Mark Feeley, was commissioned to craft a limestone replica of the bronze Galway-based statue of Irish language writer, Pádraic Ó Connaire. Ó Connaire, who passed away in 1928, is perhaps the best known of all Irish language writers in the 20th century. A statue of the writer was unveiled at Eyre Square, Galway in 1935 by President Eamon de Valera before being removed for preservation in 2006.

In 2017, President Michael D. Higgins unveiled a bronze replica of the statue in Eyre Square. Work on the statue had been overseen by Maurice Quillinan.

Mark’s brilliant sculpture took 500 hours to create in Lisadurn before it was sent to its new home in Dublin.

Arts Centre and Words Ireland call out for Roscommon Writers Are you a new, emerging or published writer? Would you like professional help with your current work-in-progress?

Roscommon Arts Centre is supporting the Words Ireland National Mentoring Programme, which will ensure that at least one writer or poet from County Roscommon will benefit from a literature mentoring relationship.

The opportunity is open to poets, fiction writers, children’s writers and creative non-fiction writers.

The mentoring process involves four two-hour meetings between the selected ‘mentee’ and their chosen professional writer over a six to eightmonth period. The mentor will read up to 10,000 words of the mentee’s

prose, or a selection of poems, in advance of each meeting and share their critical feedback and advice.

The work in progress of the mentee is discussed in depth. Applications must be made via Submittable.

Selected mentees can meet mentors via Skype or Zoom, though in-person meetings will be encouraged as soon as that’s viable.

Previous participants in the initiative have said: “The Words Ireland National Mentoring Programme is a phenomenal opportunity for any emerging writer”, and, “I’ve learnt a lot from my mentor in a short space of time… this is due to his professionalism and literary insight”.

Words Ireland is a grouping of seven national literature resource organisations aimed at supporting writers and developing new audiences for literature. Homeland and Nutrias Animal Feeds partner with local students to highlight Farm Safety!

Homeland and Nutrias Animal Feeds are delighted to partner with Leaving Cert students from Carrick-on-Shannon Community School, Jane Carty from Knockroe, Boyle, Co. Roscommon, and Grace McKeon from Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim.

Finalists of the The Certified Irish Angus Beef Schools Competition, run in collaboration with ABP Ireland and Kepak Group, Grace and Jane undertook a project as part of the competition to highlight Health and Safety on the farm.

“We chose this theme as we were aware of a few farm accidents that had happened in our local area.

We had also done some work on Farm Safety in our Agricultural Science class during Transition Year, as part of this we watched a farm safety video produced by our teacher with students from the CBS Roscommon.

This video really resonated with us, Jane and Grace said.

One story which really touched Grace and Jane was that of the death of 16-year-old Donal

Hayden who sadly lost his life as a result of a freak accident. The importance of having local emergency contact numbers on display, in a place easily accessed, could potentially save lives.

“Quite often when an accident happens on a farm, farmers turn to their neighbours for help. They might need a tractor or a trailer or they could just need an extra pair of hands.

We feel it is very important to have these numbers to hand,” the girls said.

Grace and Jane were inspired to create two items as part of their project, and nurtured by their teacher Ms. Louise Gallagher created an Emergency Contact Poster and Farm Safety Map

Worksheet. The Farm Safety Map activity is designed to be completed by small children and their parents/guardians and aims to spark conversation highlight dangerous areas on the farm. It involves drawing a map of their farm together with a simple traffic light system for Dangerous areas (red), Must Be Accompanied areas (amber) and areas which are Safe for Kids (Green) in order to identify hazards on the farm.

Aurivo Co-Operative Society were delighted to adopt Grace and Jane’s fantastic initiative as part of their project to bring the concepts to life and to create a pathway of distributing to local farmers.

Both the Farm Safety Contacts Poster and Farm Safety Activity Map will be available across Aurivo’s portfolio of 34 Homeland retail stores located across the counties of Roscommon, Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Leitrim, Longford, Westmeath and in Omagh in Co. The heifer rings had a lively trade also with agents, farmers, and northern buyers active again this week. Breeding stock with good numbers on offer saw prices peak at €2,330 for a Limousin cow and her bull calf at foot.

The dry cow trade witnessed

a good clearance with prices peaking at €2,140 or €2.40 a kilo.

The calf trade and runners are holding well as farmers replace sold stock. The weanling rings noticed very strong demand this week for the weanling heifers on offer with prices peaking at €3.29 a kilo, while the bull ring was governed by quality with variance between the quality lots and plainer types.

Cows with calves at foot made from €920 to €2,330. Springers made from €1,140 to €1,220.

Calves/runners: Dairy cross calves made from €20 to €170 with Hereford and Angus types making from €170 to €390 and continentals making up to €500.

Runners made from €120 to €770 for the continental types on offer.

Minister must act following latest abysmal forestry figures – Fitzmaurice Immediate action from the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue is required in the wake of the latest abysmal figures from the Forest Service, according to Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice.

Deputy Fitzmaurice’s comments follow the publication of the Forestry Dashboard for the week ending July 9th, which indicated that just 22 licences were issued.

“While the Forest Service

promised that it would deliver 100 applications a week to meet its target of 4,500, we are now beginning to see the reality.

They were able to keep up the pace for a short time, but the critical problems within have come home to roost now.

“When is this minister going to decide that the Forest Service is incompetent, not fit for purpose, and that a major overhaul is needed to rectify this scenario? I have

given this Department the benefit of the doubt. But a drop in productivity of 80% in a single week is simply not good enough.

ICMSA: Water quality improvements need to be acknowledged Commenting on the release of the EPA Water Quality Report for 2020, the President of ICMSA, Pat McCormack has said that while challenges remain, it is important that the improvements in water quality are acknowledged Mr. McCormack said: “To listen to some commentators, one could easily get the impression that farmers are not making efforts to improve water quality and nothing could be further from the truth.

“Over the last number of years, there has been a growing focus on water quality and other environmental issues at individual farm level and at industry level, initiatives such as ASSAP, GLAS, TAMS are all contributing towards improved water quality and other environmental indicators.

“There are challenges which farmers will tackle, but there are also positives including 89 percent of rivers have satisfactory BOD values, 71 percent of rivers

have satisfactory P levels, 53 percent of rivers have satisfactory N levels and if compared to our EU counterparts, Ireland is in a good position”.

ICMSA is concerned that the efforts of the agriculture sector are not being acknowledged and recognised and says that calls increased regulation is not the answer.

“Programmes such as ASSAP are delivering results without regulation and the concentration now should be on working with

farmers on practical measures to further improve water quality through a new agri-environment scheme and avoid excessive regulation that are unpractical and will not deliver the desired results “Challenges remain but progress is being made, this needs to be acknowledged and working with the agricultural sector is a way forward rather than a hammer approach of regulation,” Mr. McCormack concluded.

Roscommon MART WATCH We had a large entry of excellent cattle on offer at our 62nd Anniversary sale on Friday, July 9th, with a lively trade for all classes.

Bullocks averaged from €2.51 per up to a maximum of €3.27 per kilo, and heifers made from an average of €2.44 per kilo up to €3.06 per kilo. Bullocks made up to €1,470 over their weight, while heifers make up to €1,240 over theirs. There were over seventy dry cows on offer, with a good clearance and lots fetching from an average of up to €2.45 per kilo.

There were plenty of customers both online and at ringside, anxiously sourcing stock.

This Friday (July 16th) we host a special sale of bullocks and general sale of heifers and dry cows.

There was a good entry of stock at our 62nd Anniversary sale of weanlings, held on Tuesday, July 13th, with a brisk trade for both bulls and heifers. Weanling heifers averaged from €2.78 up to €6.22 per kilo for a Roan/ BBX Heifer weighing 270kgs and fetching €1,680 and weanling bulls made from an average of €2.64 per kilo up to €3.52 per

kilo. There was good demand from customers both online and at ringside, resulting in a good clearance of lots.

Our weanling show and sale for autumn-born calves will be held on Tuesday, August 3rd at 4 pm with suckler cows also on offer.

There was a larger entry of sheep on offer at our sale on Wednesday, July 14th, with a similar trade for spring lambs. Spring lambs made up to €142 for 48.3kgs, ewe lambs made up to €167 for 46kgs and stag ewes made up to €176.

Our next sheep sale for lambs and cast ewes takes place on Wednesday, July 21st, at 11 am.

The yard opens at 8 am, and all stock must be penned by 10 am.

Cllr. Kelly calls for more Glas flexibility

South Roscommon councillor, Emer Kelly has called for more flexibility when it comes to farm schemes such as Glas.

“A number of farmers I have been talking to recently have expressed frustration because they were unable to cut their traditional hay meadows before July 1st despite the good weather in the last week of June, which was ideal for hay making. Unfortunately, the weather has since broke, making it difficult or impossible for most farmers to cut these meadows and make hay since,” she said.

The Independent councillor added that, in many cases, the missed opportunity would

result in many meadows having to be turned into sileage, which would have a negative impact on the environment.

“Many farmers enjoy continuing the hay tradition, and find the traditional hay bales useful in winter for sheep and young calves.

Additionally, it works out cheaper for the farmers, and is more environmentally friendly.

“Increased flexibility with the rigid dates provided in these schemes, e.g. bringing Glas forward until 23rd June, would avoid this problem and allow farmers to carry out the haymaking during spells of fine weather in an unpredictable summer season,” she concluded.

Day services for older people and those with disabilities must reopen – Naughten Independent TD Denis Naughten has said it is unacceptable that Statefunded services for older people and those with a disability remain closed or unavailable, despite both users and staff now being fully vaccinated.

Speaking in the Dáil last week, Deputy Naughten said: “Schools reopened last February, and public

transport services will be increased to 75 per cent from July 19th, but for people who are fully vaccinated – like those in disability training centres where as little as 20% capacity is being provided, or for older people where there has been no day service whatsoever since March 2020 – we are still awaiting Public Health advice and

a Government direction on reopening.

“While I sincerely hope that the hospitality sector reopens next week, why has Government been so slow to reopen day services across this country? Older people and people with a disability have suffered the most over the last sixteen months, so why are they not now entitled to a vaccine bonus?

It is completely unacceptable that the doors of these vital days services, for the most vulnerable in our society, remain closed or are only open for part of the week”.

Responding to Deputy Naughten, Minister Eamon Ryan said: “I commit that the next phase in the reopening has to include day care services, which are

critical. If we can be successful, as we have been doing in our step-by-step and cautious but considered approach, I have every confidence that we will see those services restored. They are critical, not just for the health of individuals but also for their families. There are also all the other knock-on consequences of not having them available”.

Charity raffle on behalf of Embrace Farm A charity raffle, held on behalf of Embrace Farm, is offering up two fantastic twin ewe lambs. Embrace Farm is a fully registered charity that provides support services to families who have suffered bereavement due to a farm accident, as well as those who have suffered severe injury in a farm accident.

The two ewe lambs were sired by a smashing Chartex ram that was purchased for €950, and they will be raffled in conjunction with the Big Boy

Ram Sale 2021 on behalf of Embrace Farm. They will be on display at 5 pm on July 30th in the Showgrounds, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon.

Fitzmaurice: Ryan should resign over power generation ‘neglect’ Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice has called on the Minister for Transport, the Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan to resign over “his insistence to neglect power generation in Ireland”.

The Roscommon Galway TD said: “Major questions need to be asked of the Commission for Regulation of

Utilities (CRU), Ireland’s independent energy and water regulator. The CRU is tasked with, among other things, ensuring Irish consumers have access to secure and sustainable energy at a reasonable cost.

“It is clear from the fear out there at the moment when it comes to potential blackouts in the nation’s capital later

this year that the regulator has failed to do its job – and someone needs to be held accountable for this”.

Deputy Fitzmaurice said that ultimately the blame lies at Minister Ryan’s door.

“It is his party that has driven this green agenda to a point where we will be leaving ourselves both economi-

Calls for public service obligation for An Post Sinn Féin MEP for the midlands and northwest, Chris MacManus, has expressed his concern for the future of the postal network following the Government’s rejection of an amendment calling for the introduction of a public service obligation for post offices.

The MEP said the network faces an uncertain future following the reduction in payment rates for postmasters, which came into effect this month.

“This problem was highlighted in the 2020 Grant Thornton Report on the future of Post Offices which warned that the State faces significant levels of unrestrained closures of post offices by the end of 2021 unless the necessary supports are put in place,” he said.

“That report recommended a yearly PSO worth €17 million. Instead post offices have only received €8.5 million spread out over 18 months through the pandemic fund. This is not good enough and does not provide

Class of 2021 graduate at Coláiste Mhuire, Ballygar Coláiste Mhuire, Ballygar recently held its Leaving Certificate Graduation Mass, celebrated by Parish Priest Fr. Michael Breslin at St. Mary’s Church.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, parents and family members were unable to join in the celebration but were able to view a live stream of the Mass.

Symbols representing the lives of the students throughout their time in

Coláiste Mhuire were brought to the altar.

The symbols included a smiley face, brought up

by Liam Hannon, which represented the laughter and fun experienced by the students during their time in the school, and also served as a reminder of the fond school days memories the students will recall in the future.

The symbols also included a timetable, reflecting the routine of their lives,

which was brought up by Caroline Mitchell as well as a textbook to represent learning. David Gacquin brought up a football and sliotar to represent the contribution made by the students to the sporting life of Coláiste Mhuire. Eva Neilan brought up a tin whistle and a programme from one of the school’s musicals to signify musical achievements and to acknowledge the contribution made by

students to numerous music performances at the school.

A plant was presented

by Rachel Coleman to symbolise the growth experienced by students and the maturity which they will attain in the future. Art and creativity was represented by Ethan Glennon, who carried up a poem composed by Joey Kelly (RIP), whose untimely death as a first year student in the school was commemorated by his classmates during the Mass.

Finally, a dreamcatcher was brought forward by Juliana Daly to represent the dreams already brought to fruition by the students during their school days and the dreams that they hope to realise in the future.

This introduction to the Mass was narrated by Ciara Hannon and ably accompanied by Avena Traynor on piano.

These performers included Niamh Bury (singer and pianist), Aimee Carty (singer and violinist), Amy Coleman (pianist), Avena Traynor (pianist) and Ciara Hannon (flautist). The Liturgy was prepared

by Ms. Cunniffe, while Ms. O’Shea directed the music.

The celebration of the Leaving Certificate Mass is always a defining event in the school calendar as it serves to conclude yet another academic year.

Hurlers’ Christy Ring status on the line Christy Ring Cup: Roscommon v Sligo at 3 pm in Dr. Hyde Park on Saturday < SEAMUS DUKE

After what has been a very disappointing season so far, Roscommon hurlers face local rivals Sligo in a ‘winner takes all’ clash at Dr. Hyde Park on Saturday. The victors will advance to a semi-final meeting with Derry, while the losers will be relegated to the Nicky Rackard Cup for 2022.

Speaking to People Sport on Tuesday, Roscommon manager Johnny Keane says that his squad is badly hit by injuries as they prepare for the match.

“Paul Dolan, Naos Connaughton, Jason Kilkenny, Cillian Egan, Donal Kelly and Conor Mulry are all either out or very doubtful, so that leaves us well short. However, Oisin Kelly is back, so that’s a positive for us. But we just have to get on with it,” he said.

“Make no mistake, Sligo will be a very hard team to beat.

They are an improving side and have momentum after a few good wins this year. I would’ve preferred if this match was in Athleague, but we have to play in Hyde Park and that’s it.

“This is a proper shootout now. For the loser, there is relegation, while the winners will get a shot at a semi-final. We will have to step up our game from the defeat against Derry the last day, but we feel that this is a game we can win.

“I hope the Roscommon supporters will come out and support us on Saturday. It’s a huge game for Roscommon hurling and it’s very important we win it,” he concluded.

Over the years, Roscommon has always been superior to Sligo at senior hurling level. However in recent years, Roscommon have slipped down the pecking order, while the Yeats County have improved with players like Gerard O’Kelly-Lynch leading the charge for them. A win against Roscommon would be a huge achievement for the visitors and they will come to Dr. Hyde Park in a confident mood.

Roscommon backs are to the wall and they will have to pull out a big performance to win. At home they should be able to prevail, but it will be far from easy.

Davy Fitzgerald v Brian Lohan is just one element. If Wexford can formulate a plan to deal with Tony Kelly they can win it. That’s a very big ‘if’.

Prediction:: Wexford All-Ireland SHC Qualifier: Laois v Waterford at 2 pm in Nowlan Park Laois had a great win last weekend against Antrim but they are stepping up in class considerably here.

Prediction: Waterford Ulster SFC semi-final: Armagh v Monaghan at 6 pm in Newry Monaghan are much improved this year, as are Armagh – who have set their sights on the Ulster title. The influence of Kieran Donaghy has been very positive for McGeeney’s side. Since seeing them against Roscommon, I have fancied their chances of a provincial title. They have a few very talented forwards who should tilt the balance in their favour.

Leinster SFC semi-final: Kildare v Westmeath at 2 pm in Croke Park There will be 18,000 people in Croker to see both Leinster semi-finals. Westmeath are going fairly well under Jack Cooney, but Kildare should be strong, with the likes of Niall Flynn, Daniel Flynn and Jimmy Hyland up front and able to get the match-winning scores.

Prediction: Kildare Munster SHC Final: Limerick v Tipperary at 4.15 pm in Pairc Uí Caoimh Many hurling pundits reckon that there is a big game in this experienced Tipperary side. They will need to play out of their skins to win here. Limerick haven’t been at 100%, but they haven’t needed to be, which is a warning to all the other contenders. It’s hard to see them beaten.

Prediction:Limerick Leinster SFC semi-final: Dublin v Meath at 4.30 pm in Croke Park There are a few people who reckon there are cracks beginning to appear in Dublin’s armour this summer. They were very poor against Wexford, and Meath will surely test them. But it’s stretching things too far to suggest that they might win.

Sunday, July 18th Ulster SFC semi-final: Tyrone v Donegal at 1.45 pm in Enniskillen Darren McCurry gave a virtuoso performance against Cavan and he will need to do the same here if Tyrone are to win. The fitness of Donegal talisman Michael Murphy will be crucial to their chances. With Cathal McShane also back in harness, I fancy Tyrone.

This weekend’s action Killarney hosts the fourth day of its five-day festival this afternoon (Thursday) over the sticks from 1.40 pm and finishes with a flat card tomorrow, away at 1.40 pm.

Flat racing this evening is at Leopardstown, stalls for the first open at 4 pm and tomorrow’s second meeting is an evening one at Kilbeggan, first race at 4.25 pm.

Saturday is Irish Oaks day at the Curragh featuring the Group race backed up with the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes, starting at 1.10 pm. The Curragh race again on Sunday featuring The Minstrel Stakes and the Kilboy Estates Stakes from 1.35 pm. There is also a national hunt card at Tipperary on Sunday, first race at 1.20 pm. Ballinrobe race on Monday and Tuesday, both evening meetings.

There is television coverage from Newbury, three races, Market Rasen, three races and The Curragh, one race on ITV on Saturday and carried on Virgin Media 1.

Epsom Oaks winner Aidan O’Brien’s Snowfall will face a maximum of eight rivals as she bids to double up in the Juddmonte Irish Oaks at the Curragh on Saturday. She will be a very short prohibitive favourite following her easy Epsom win under Dettori. She is 2/7 with 6/1 bar. Ballydoyle also has High Heels, Divinely, La Jaconde and Willow, five of the nine possible runners.

On the face of it an 11-point loss doesn’t look good in black and white but behind that final scoreline was a courageous and resilient performance from a Roscommon team who simply would not lie down and who kept coming back regardless of the odds. But at the end of the day they were beaten by a Kerry team who were just that little bit classier around the field and especially in attack.

Roscommon manager, Emmett Durney, was understandably proud of his charges at the fulltime whistle. “We are very disappointed. We got off to a good start and we settled into the game well but the couple of injuries we had going into the match caught up with us. Oisin Cregg and Aaron Shannon were both carrying injuries and it showed in both players.

The black card and conceding those scores before half-time was also crucial,” he said.

“I’m hugely proud of these young lads. They kept going right to the end. But look, if you go down a man in an All-Ireland semi-final you will get punished and that’s what happened today.

It put us on the back foot unfortunately.

“But we never threw in the towel and in fairness to them, they carried the game to Kerry and we had a few more goal chances that we were unlucky with near the end. We never gave up and these lads were a credit to their families, to their clubs and their county. It just wasn’t to be and good luck to Kerry, they are a fine side,” he concluded.

Having waited six months since claiming their respective provincial titles, this was a chance for these young players to show their skills on the All-Ireland stage and they provided the 500 spectators with a very entertaining spectacle.

was well contested. Roscommon began on the front foot and hit the first three points of the game from Eoin Colleran (2 frees) and Colm Neary. But Kerry edged their way back into the game and the supremely talented Keith Evans finished a brilliant team move in the 8th minute for a great goal.

The sides were evenly matched at that stage and in the 18th minute it was 0-6 to 1-3 but it was after the water break that things began to fall apart for Roscommon. Darragh O’Sullivan rattled home Kerry’s second goal after a poor kick out from David Farrell and then Aaron Shannon was mysteriously black carded by referee Sean Lonergan for an off the ball incident.

Roscommon did score a super goal in the 19th minute from Ryan Conlon but Kerry made their numerical advantage pay before half-time as they kicked seven points without reply to open up a significant gap. Eoin Colleran did point for Roscommon in firsthalf injury-time but at the break it was Kerry 2-10 Roscommon 1-7.

Conor Hand, Caelim Keogh and Darren Gately were outstanding for Roscommon. Nevertheless, Kerry, led by man of the match Keith Evans, Cian McMahon, and Paudie O’Leary, were the better team in the third quarter and by the 46th minute they led by 2-17 to 1-10.

But Roscommon had another kick in them. Gately scored a superb point and Conor Hand blasted home another peach of a goal in the 49th minute, and when the same player pointed a minute later the gap was down to five (217 to 2-12).

The Kerry response was clinical, however. In the 52nd minute they were awarded a close-range free but rather than take the simple point, Darragh O’Sullivan played a clever pass to Cian Mc-

Mahon who almost took the net of the stanchion, such was the power of his shot, for an opportunist goal. Now it was game, set and match to the Kingdom.

Roscommon can look back on their performance with much to be positive about. To score 2-13 against such an accomplished

team was a super achievement and some of their scores were out of the top drawer. Emmett Durney and his players left Limerick on Sunday evening with their heads held high.

Kerry play Derry in the 2020 All-Ireland minor final this weekend.

Ladies face uphill task after Kildare defeat TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Football Intermediate Championship Kildare 1-11 Roscommon 1-7 Roscommon face an uphill task when it comes to advancing in the Intermediate championship after their disappointing four-point loss to Kildare at Duggan Park in Ballinasloe last Sunday.

The result means that Roscommon will have to beat Laois in the final game to have a chance. But the nature of what they will have to do in that game, and how much they will need to win by, won’t be known until after Kildare and Laois play on Sunday.

Roscommon did play well at times during this game, but they were never able to come to terms with Kildare’s defensive game plan, which proved effective on the day as the Lilywhites were able to counter-attack with purpose and get the scores they needed.

The game was well contested for most of the first half. A splendid Laura Fleming goal after eight minutes suggested that Diane O’Hora’s team would be too good on the day.

But Kildare was back in the game close to half-time when Nessa Dooley converted a penalty, and by the time halftime rolled around, there was

only a point between the teams (Kildare 1-8, Roscommon 1-7).

However, Roscommon were disappointing in the second period and never got going, scoring only one further point. Nessa Dooley and Lara Curran nudged Kildare further ahead and they held out to win after a largely forgettable game.

Best for Roscommon on the day were Rebecca Finan, Roisin Wynne, and Laura Fleming, but it was another very disappointing day out for the Rossie girls. They have one more chance now to rescue their season.

Shannon Gaels launch ‘Win a House in Sligo’

Shannon Gaels GAA club in Roscommon and Curry GAA club in Sligo have teamed up to offer one lucky person the life-changing chance to win a brandnew house in Sligo worth over €300,000!

Young camógs reach All-Ireland final!

Tesco All-Ireland U-16 Camogie ‘C’ Semi-Final Roscommon 2-13 Armagh 1-5 Roscommon have qualified for the All-Ireland ‘C’ Camogie final at U-16 level after their excellent performance against Armagh in Templeport, Cavan, last Sunday. Katie Murray got the Roscommon goal in the opening half as Colm Kelly’s side led by 1-6 to 0-4 at the break.

An excellent goal from sub Emma Connaughton added to Roscommon’s total on the resumption and they can now look forward to the final, which takes place on Sunday against Westmeath in Birr at 12.30 pm.

O’Meara the hero for Athleague!

Ronan O’Meara was the Athleague hero as they pipped St. Dominic’s by a single point (3-12 to 1-17) in a thrilling G&G Electric Junior Championship Final on Sunday evening last in a match that went to extra-time.

Athleague were on top early on, and with Robbie Fallon on fire, it was looking good for the home side.

He scored two goals while Dwayne Martin was on target for Dominic’s.

If Athleague were on top in the opening half, it was the Knockcroghery side that were the better team in the second half, and they looked set for victory after good points from Liam Kilcline, Daire Keenan and Mickey Joe Egan. But Athleague were not finished, and Cormac Kelly edged his side ahead with a third goal before Padraig Halpin saved Dominic’s with a late point to send the match into extra-time.

The sides were well matched in both periods, and when it looked like it might take ‘65s to settle the issue, up stepped O’Meara to convert two frees and hand Athleague a dramatic win.

Eirgrid Connacht U-20 Football Championship Semi-Final Roscommon 4-13 Sligo 2-12 < SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon withstood a secondhalf rally from Sligo to earn a tilt at Mayo in the Connacht U-20 final following this thrilling semifinal played in perfect weather conditions at Dr. Hyde Park on Wednesday night.

Roscommon were by far the better team in the opening half, at the end of which they led by 1-8 to 0-3 and indeed the margin should have been greater as the home side missed two more gilt-edged goal chances when James Fitzpatrick and Darragh Heneghan were off target.

However with Keith Doyle making some spectacular catches at midfield and Colin Walsh, Robbie Dolan, Ben O’Carroll and Adam McDermott playing well, Roscommon dominated.

The goal that the home side deserved on the balance of play came in the final minute of the half when James Fitzpatrick fisted to the Sligo net after Patrick Gavin’s shot struck a post.

Sligo were much better in the second half. Sean Carroll was outstanding and they began to find their form. Oisin Flynn and Lee Deignan kicked some great scores and they kept in touch. Then in the 52nd minute, Carroll blasted home a great goal and it reduced the margin to six. Then points from Flynn and Aaron Perry saw only four between them with six minutes to go. It looked like a nervous final few minutes lay ahead for Roscommon.

But the final three scores of the

game were goals. Jason Doory scored a brilliant opportunist goal for the Rossies in the 59th minute and a minute later James Fitzpatrick raised another green flag, fisting to the Sligo net after a mistake from their goalkeeper Conor Carroll. Sligo ended proceedings in spectacular fashion when Joseph Keaney thundered home another super goal in the 62nd minute but it was of consolation value only to the Yeats County.

So Roscommon will now travel to face Mayo in the Connacht final which will be held in Castlebar on Wednesday night next. Liam Tully’s team have turned in two fine attacking performances but their second-half fade out will be a worry as they will be stepping up in class considerably in the final. But credit where it’s due and Roscommon have done everything that has been expected of them so far. The big test will come next week.
