Accident at Work I was recently injured in an accident at work. I was working alongside my colleague when he tripped on a loose cable which in turn caused the machine I was working on to shut down violently. I injured my arm and I will be out of work for several weeks as a result. I am in difficult financial circumstances but I do not want to sue my work colleague for compensation. Is there anything else I can do?

Every employer is obliged to provide a safe place of work for his employees. Furthermore, employees are expected to take reasonable care to protect the health and safety of themselves and of other people in the workplace. However, if an employee, whilst acting in the course of his employment negligently causes an accident which injures another then the employer may be considered vicariously liable for that incident. In such circumstances an employer, or in his insurers, may be liable to compensate the injured employee.

Employers must have a Safety Statement in place setting out policies and procedures regarding accident prevention. All accidents must be reported to the employer who should in turn investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Witnesses to the incident should also be interviewed.

Under the Statute of Limitations one has two years from the date of accident to bring a compensation claim for personal injuries.

You should consult with your Solicitor without delay who will advise on the best course of action to take.

Main Street discovery could be toll gate from 1700s A stone wall-like structure was discovered under Main Street in Roscommon town during recent Public Realm Improvement works.

An archaeologist working with Roscommon County Council has said the exact date or purpose of a stone wall-like structure, discovered in Roscommon town during Urban Realm Improvement works earlier this week, remains ‘unknown’ but that it could be the remains of a medieval town wall or gate.

Consultant Archaeologist Ed Danaher said the works on Main Street were being carried out under the supervision of Archaeological Management Solutions (AMS).

“Masonry walls known to exist near the junction of Main Street and Chapel Lane have been uncovered, recorded, and preserved in-situ under archaeological supervision.

“The National Monuments Service has been informed about these discoveries. The exact date or purpose of these walls is, as yet, unknown, but they are possibly related to the medieval or early-modern town, conceivably being the re-

mains of a town wall or gate,” he said.

A strategy is being prepared for the long-term preservation of archaeology discovered during ongoing works.

While investigations continue into the discovery of the structure, local historian John Kerrigan believes the find is part of the remains of an old toll gate, featured on a 1736 drawing by Francis Plunkett which was based on a map from the early 1700s.

Speaking to the Roscommon People this week, Mr. Kerrigan said: “In my opinion, the walls discovered on Main Street were probably part of a gate lodge which was attached to the old toll gate.

“I know that Roscommon County Council engineers suspect it is an old water culvert but there’s no reason why the culvert couldn’t be under this gate,” he said.

“While Roscommon was never a ‘walled town’ as such, there was a toll gate situated at the bottom of where Church Street

is now in the 1700s. Anyone bringing produce into the town had to go through that gate and pay a toll.

“Plunkett’s survey of 1736 was based on a map from 1700, which shows the toll gate jutting out from what is known as ‘Grealy’s corner’ towards where the AIB is now”.

The historian said that while the toll gate featured on the 1700 map, there was no mention of it in Isaac Weld’s statistical survey of the county in 1832.

While a strategy is being put in place to preserve any archaeological findings during the ongoing Public Realm works, Mr. Kerrigan suspects other ruins may be found closer to the Square, where the Bank of Ireland building stands today.

“Was there a tunnel of about 50 metres between the old courthouse to the old jail? That would be a logical assumption because both were built around the same time and it could have been used to move prisoners from one to the other,” he concluded.

Kerrane: ‘Protect Local Employment Services’ Sinn Féin spokesperson on Social Protection Claire Kerrane TD has said that Local Employment Services, in their community-based and not-for-profit current

form, must be protected.

Deputy Kerrane’s call comes as the service is set to go out to tender, This comes as the service is set to go out to tender, something the Government has insisted must happen in order to comply with EU procurement rules.

Speaking earlier this week, Deputy Kerrane said: “The roll-out of JobPath in 2015 signalled a move towards the privatisation of job activation services. Since then, there has been an emphasis on referrals to the JobPath providers, Seetec and Turas Nua, above all other existing schemes, including the Local Employment Service. This preference for JobPath has not gone unnoticed.

“Local Employment Services offer a unique service, not just to those referred to them but, crucially, through their walkin service. The services provided are person-cen-

tred and additional wraparound services are also available. This is a service that we must protect.

“While it is welcome that the Local Employment Service is set to be expanded to parts of the State without such a service, through the first phase of the tendering process, it must be maintained in its current structure. There can be no dismantling of the community and notfor-profit ethos.

“There are legitimate concerns that the Department are moving towards a fully privatised model of job activation – this is not something we support”.

The Sinn Féin TD added: “Considering the millions of taxpayers’ money handed over to the JobPath providers for very poor return for sourcing sustainable employment, we cannot allow this privatisation agenda to creep into community services like the Local Employment Services”.

Crosby praise for Barracks restoration Independent councillor Tom Crosby has paid tribute to the local community in Cootehall for their work in carrying out restoration works on the former Garda barracks in the village.

The building has been refurbished and transformed following local fundraising efforts over the last number of years. It will now exhibit the life and works of famous writer and former resident, John McGahern.

Roscommon lecturer’s creative endeavour!

Dr. Michael Finneran (Head of Drama and Theatre Studies at Mary Immaculate College (MIC)) has been awarded almost €40,000 from the Irish Research Council (IRC) and Creative Ireland to investigate the impact that creative activity can have on wellbeing.

The project is one of seventy-six projects funded by the Irish Research Council under their New Foundations scheme, which brings researchers and community/voluntary organisations together to develop new insights that will ultimately lead to a better society for all.

The ‘Creative Capacity in Ireland: Working towards Wellbeing’ project is the first large-scale study in Ireland to comprehensively examine international research on creative engagement and wellbeing, in order to further understand the positive links between creativity and wellbeing, particularly with regard to intentionality and affect/effect.

Over the next year, the project will identify and study creative organisations and community groups throughout Ireland that offer creative engagement targeted towards wellbeing. By establishing

best practice in the area and identifying the structural barriers that currently exist, this project will offer a greater understanding of the types of creative activ-

ity that impact positively on peoples’ wellbeing.

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK A column by Roscommon People editor Thursday Recently, I wrote here about the challenge of trying to exit Lidl without having bought anything. Now, I note that another very important issue of our times has been raised on Twitter.

Sophie Colombeau tweeted: ‘Am thrilled to announce that today I kept pace with the Lidl checkout lady. There was no lag, none at all, between her swiping and my packing’.

This, I can identify with. It’s certainly not exclusive to Lidl; that was just Sophie’s experience.

It can happen in any supermarket. You arrive at the checkout and engage in perfectly nice small talk. Your first challenge is to get your items to the checkout person quickly enough to accommodate their swiping.

Then, as you tiptoe towards the packinginto-bags phase, the pressure mounts. Now your challenge is to put the stuff away in tandem with the checkout person’s swiping. This is usually impossible to achieve (is it just me, or do they sometimes seem to pick up speed?). Inevitably, they’ve totalled your bill, they’re talking all that confusing ‘club card points’ language, you’re scrambling to pay, and several of the items you’re buying are still in a no man’s land between the counter and your bags. It’s a race the consumer cannot possibly win.

Inevitably, it all ends with you apologising, and the nice checkout person – serene swiping effortlessly completed and latest win secured – saying “no hurry at all”.

Friday I accept that there are worse predicaments, but I really, really wouldn’t want to be trapped in an elevator with leading members of People Before Profit. I actually think it would be more terrifying than being locked overnight in the new-look Prime Time studio.

For starters, the (very) earnest folks in People Before Profit have taken dourness to new levels. In their public outings, most of the party’s high profile spokespersons come across as po-faced, humourless and negative. Maybe they’re a laugh-a-minute in private.

Of course they would argue that they’re not in the entertainment business, and that’s fair enough. At some level, they’re engaged in serious stuff…raising important issues of inequality, discrimination,

Also on Friday Shay Healy, who died today, was a colourful and immensely likeable presence on the Irish showbiz scene for decades. An accomplished songwriter who had the Midas touch when Eurovision Song Contest season came around, he went on to present the very innovative ‘Nighthawks’ programme. Check out YouTube for Shay chatting with Eamon Dunphy and John Giles in a priceless clip which is a great reminder of the atmosphere and vibe of that show.

Closer to home, many of us recall the night in 1992 when ‘Nighthawks’ was broadcast from the Hell’s Kitchen pub in Castlerea. The late Sean Doherty lit a fuse that night, when he implicated then-Taoiseach Charles Haughey in the phone tappings of 1982. Haughey’s resignation soon followed. (See Dan Dooner’s story in this issue).

Shay Healy was a man of endless creativity, infectious positivity and humour. He will be greatly missed.

poverty, injustice. Probably much of what they say and do is very sincere; but I am convinced that some of what we see from them is disingenuous, game-playing…opportunist, tiresome populism.

Being humourless is one thing, being unpleasant and nasty is another. Shortly after the death of Prince Philip was announced today, PBP dispatched a crass tweet. The post – which, tellingly, has since been deleted – made it very clear that the party wouldn’t be expressing condolences on the death of Prince Philip due to its opposition to the monarchy.

PBP (and others) may well have legitimate issues with the monarchy – with the late Prince Philip too – but tweeting as they did on the day of his death was ill-judged, and revealing.

By contrast, whether through gritted teeth or not, Sinn Féin public pronouncements since the death of Prince Philip have been notably dignified, respectful and gracious. And mature.

A simple message to PBP: Show a bit of class. Show some respect for the very recently departed – and their loved ones.

On our way to a function in Dublin on a Saturday afternoon in 1997, the prospect of missing that day’s Grand National was a troubling one.

Of course there was a solution – take a break on the journey and find a pub, hotel bar or bookies’ in which to see the race.

In those days, most bars were packed for the Grand National. After much deliberation, and having done a u-turn in one or two crowded places, we finally got lucky and found a small bar in a village close to the city.

We’ve always loved the Grand National, with its sense of history and tradition, the guarantee of excitement and drama.

In truth, I’m less engaged with it this year. The bookies are closed, we’re still in the grip of a pandemic, there are no crowds at Aintree…even the fact that it’s no longer covered by the BBC seems to have diluted the occasion a touch!

In fairness, ITV are doing a good job in their build-up. A host of Irish horse racing greats are involved in the coverage. A segment by Katy Walsh on the record of female jockeys in the great race is very interesting. Katy’s third-place run on Seabass in 2012 remains, as of Saturday, the highest placing ever achieved by a female jockey. I begin to wonder if her report could be a positive omen for Rachael Blackmore later today…

As I have to pop into town, I record the race, avoid radio and social media, and breathe a sign of relief that I can sit down later, unaware of the outcome. Had there been a bookies’ open, I’d have placed a few bob on Rachael’s mount, Minella Times (11-1). (I don’t do online gambling).

What a great experience it was to watch

a historic sporting milestone unfold.

Rachael, Champion jockey at Cheltenham last month, continued her phenomenal form by romping to victory. Magnificent.

Emotional. Becoming the first woman to win the Grand National, this gifted sportstar and outstanding person then produced a classic off the cuff comment: “I don’t feel male or female right now. I don’t even feel human”.

The Tipperary woman is on top of the world, at the summit of her sport, and oddson to wipe the boards in awards’ ceremonies later this year. Perhaps her stunning achievements will mean female jockeys are simply referred to as ‘jockeys’ from now on.

Back in that intimate village pub in 1997, we were pleasantly surprised to secure seats as we joined the locals for the Grand National.

Then came an IRA bomb scare, Aintree was evacuated, and the Grand National of 1997 was abruptly called off. Still, the coffee was lovely.

All weekend I continue to keep a close eye on the Premier League. It’s all very odd. Jesse Lingard has turned into Messi, David Moyes has turned into Pep Guardiola, and Paul Pogba is all dancing feet, strutting around like one of the professionals on Strictly.

Super-slick Manchester City have been beating all-comers in recent months, and it’s really advisable – before losing to them – to keep eleven men on the field. That way, you might lose by less. On Saturday, Leeds – away to the champions-elect – forfeited a man on the stroke of half-time (Liam Cooper sent off). It was like taking a glove off in mid-combat with Muhammad Ali. Then, befitting this peculiar season, daring Leeds claimed a remarkable 2-1 win. Stuart Dallas scored both goals. Soon we might be googling ‘Dallas’ and it won’t be all about JR and Sue Ellen…

Tuesday There was a time when I was a regular contributor to The Phoenix Magazine (‘Funnies’ section only). In those days, they kindly sent me complimentary copies. In more recent years, I purchase every edition. Today, when I picked one up in a local shop, I got a surprise: the cover price – which is €3.65 – had been crossed out with a pen, and replaced with a scribbled €4! I’ve heard of the phoenix rising, but this is a bit rich…

Funding welcomed for St Teresa’s Special School < DAN DOONER

The Department of Education last week confirmed funding for two additional classrooms and toilet facilities at St. Teresa’s Special School in Creagh, Ballinasloe.

The announcement was welcomed by school principal, Anita O’Reilly, who said: “This is wonderful news for parents of children planning to come to St. Teresa’s this September.

“It is such a relief to have a plan in place to accommodate these children as we are at capacity in our

current building. I’d like to thank the Buildings Section at the Department of Education – we now have a number of months to have this set up by September”.

Local Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan said it was fantastic news for the school and that it was important to see progress ahead of September.

“We owe so much to the incredible teaching and healthcare staff at St. Teresa’s, especially Principal Anita O’Reilly and Vice-Principal Geraldine Clarke for driving this

project. This is along with the School Board and support of Ballinasloe Area Community Development board (BACD) in providing the location in the park opposite the school.

“We have two other major outstanding school projects – to source a site for a permanent school to accommodate children at St. Teresa’s school and to move the new school building for Scoil An Chroí Naofa DEIS Band 1 for close to 300 students to the next stage of planning approval and the tender process,” she said.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy also expressed his delight at the news.

“I am now delighted that it’s public knowledge and with ten extra students about to start in September this school desperately needed emergency accommodation, so it is terrific to see the funding being allocated.

“I am glad along with Minister Foley and her officials that we were able to help this school out. I am pushing hard to get a new site for the school finally over the line”.

Why not go for neutral tones?

When in doubt, neutral colours are a great and very safe choice.

If the bridesmaids are in blue, then pewter and grey look stunning. If the dresses are blush pink or midnight blue then Metallic neutrals like pewter, copper, matte gold, and matte silver, coordinate well in most situations, without washing you out with traditional dusty rose and powder blues. Reds and burgundy shades are probably a fitting colour for a winter or Christmas-themed weddings.

Consider the length of dresses Typically, the mothers of the bride and groom should match the length of the bridesmaids’ dresses. Obviously if the bridesmaids are wearing mini-skirts, then you have the option to go with an above-the-knee skirt, knee length, midi/tea length, or full-length dress. If the bridesmaids are in full-length gowns, then your dress should be floor length, too. A dressy pantsuit is always a good alternative if you are a fuller shape and would rather not have your legs visible. Long coatdresses with bell sleeves are very flattering and stylish, especially on taller ladies.

Trends and styles change, and most Irish bridal boutiques are well equipped to advise and style you accordingly. At the end of the day, I advise my clients to factor comfort and

Murphy confident of ‘renewed focus’ by IDA in Roscommon Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy says he is confident there will be a renewed IDA focus on Roscommon following a meeting with senior officials which he says was “a bid to tackle a pattern of neglect by the State agency towards the county”.

“Unfortunately for the last ten years we have seen very lit-

“We have had a very poor record of IDA site visits and no major job announcements for the county. Then in January 2021 we had a five-year plan published by the IDA which simply continues this pattern of neglect

towards County Roscommon.

“If you look through the plan, Carrick-on-Shannon, Leitrim, Galway, Mayo are mentioned – but once again County Roscommon hardly featured”.

Roscommon LEADER Company will receive €2.6 million as part of a new €70 million Transitional LEADER programme unveiled by Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys last week under the Government’s ‘Our Rural Future’ plan.

The news was warmly welcomed

by Fine Gael TD Frank Feighan, who said the new programme was now open for applications.

“I would encourage communities and local enterprises who wish to avail of funding to make contact with their Local Development Company to discuss how the LEADER Programme can assist their plans”.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy said over €6 million was allocated for local action groups in Roscommon and Galway.

Feighan: ‘No post-Covid tax or USC increases’ The Government has reiterated its commitment to no increases in income tax or USC rates post-pandemic, the Minister for State at the Department of Health and local Fine Gael TD Frank Feighan has said.

“As we emerge from the pandemic and return to normality and economic growth, the last thing we need is higher taxes on income, business or savings for people in Roscommon,” Deputy Feighan said.

“There will be no increases in income tax or USC rates.

We won’t see increases on tax on business, we won’t see increases in tax on people’s savings, and far from increasing income tax, we are going to index income tax bans.

“Fewer people now will end up in the higher income tax band – this is a solid commitment in the Programme for Government from Fine Gael”.

Former school principal sent forward for trial A former Roscommon Community College principal has been sent forward for trial in connection with a number of alleged theft and false accounting charges.

Frank Chambers of Carnacregg, Moylough, is alleged to have committed the offences on various dates between 2012 and 2017. The alleged injured parties include Roscommon Community College and the Galway-Roscommon Education

and Training Board (GRETB).

Judge Francis Comerford set April 30th as the date for a pre-trial hearing at a sitting of Roscommon Circuit Court on Tuesday.

The court was told that there is a large amount of documentary evidence involved in the case and that a trial could be expected to take between four and five days to complete.

‘People still blame me for bringing down the Government!’

AS SHAY HEALY IS FONDLY REMEMBERED THIS WEEK, WE SPOKE TO SEÁN BROWNE ABOUT THAT NIGHT IN HELL’S KITCHEN… < DAN DOONER

Castlerea videographer, Seán Browne, was reminiscing this week following the death last Friday of former RTÉ broadcaster Shay Healy, who, in January 1992, hosted the most infamous episode of his ‘Nighthawks’ chat show at the former ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ pub in the County Roscommon town.

During the show, Healy interviewed former Fianna Fáil Justice Minister and Roscommon TD Seán Doherty, who claimed that some members of the Cabinet with whom he had served in 1982 had been aware of his order to illegally tap the phones of three Irish journalists. The revelation led to the resignation of then Taoiseach Charles Haughey just a few weeks later.

Healy and the Nighthawks team hadn’t come to Castlerea expecting trouble, however, and were actually in town to chat about Roscommon journalist John Waters’ book ‘Jiving at the Crossroads’.

“It was recorded on January 10th, 1992. Seán Doherty rang me on the Wednesday to confirm that it was being recorded that Friday evening,” Seán Browne said this week.

“The camera team came down and went off out filming as part of the ‘Jiving at the Crossroads’ piece. We had to organise sound in Hell’s Kitchen and we even had Roy Eyre (RIP) dressed up as the devil! Shay Healy was filmed down in the local telephone kiosk letting on he was calling John Waters with the devil walking past him on the street”.

Seán said news of the recording spread quickly around Castlerea and the county itself.

“I just mentioned it to a few people but word must have got around because the place was absolutely packed that night,” he said.

The Castlerea man said the former Justice Minister’s comments weren’t picked up on during the interview, probably due to background noise, but it wasn’t long before the full ramifications were felt.

Healy that he was after saying something very significant that he hadn’t said before,” he said.

It wasn’t long before the quotes were being reported in the national newspapers.

“29 years ago this year and some people still blame me for bringing down the Government,” Seán laughs.

Seán says that while the interview has featured on shows such as ‘Reeling in the Years’, the link to Castlerea is seldom, if ever, mentioned.

“It has been on TV over the years but it never says where it happened. I think I have the only photographs taken that night. The producer Philip Kampf didn’t want flash photography during the interview and I remember he gave me a horrid serious look when he thought my camera was going to flash!”

As well as photographs, Seán has held on to one other keepsake from the infamous night.

“I have the chair Seán Doherty sat in. His name is even carved into the bottom of it. I had it tied to the ceiling at one stage just in case someone made off with it. People still get their pictures taken in it and it’s nice to have as a keepsake,” he said.

And what about Seán Doherty’s subsequent relationship with the deposed Taoiseach?

“Seán Doherty once told me: ‘We still talk but when I put my head inside the lion’s mouth I make sure he has his teeth pulled!’”

Mr. Browne said that he was very sad to hear of Shay Healy’s passing, commenting that he was “a lovely man” who had been very charming and friendly when he visited Castlerea.

After a year of cocooning Rebecca (17) is vaccinated! < DAN DOONER

Following a year of cocooning, Ballinlough teenager and kidney transplant recipient, Rebecca Osgood-Daly (17) made her way to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin on Thursday last to receive her second dose of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccination.

Rebecca’s mother, Bernie Osgood, had been campaigning for patients aged 16 and 17 to be included as part of group 4 of the vaccination priority list.

“It has been a long time coming and we are so grateful to have reached this point. Rebecca has

been cocooning for over a year, away from her friends, and it has been very difficult for her,” Bernie told the Roscommon People this week.

“When the first schedule for the rollout of vaccines was announced we were in disbelief that Rebecca and other transplant recipients of her age were not included. When the age category for the vaccination rollout was extended to over 16s it was a huge relief. Once her vaccine has had time to work, we expect that Rebecca will be able to get back to school after a year-long hiatus”.

“We actually had to go to Dublin twice,” Bernie

added, “We were called to Beaumont on the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day but when we arrived she was offered the AstraZenica vaccine even though Pfizer was the only one recommended for her. They didn’t bring Rebecca in and eventually said she’d have to come back to get the Pfizer jab.

There was lots of confusion”.

The Head of Nursing at Beaumont called Bernie later that weekend to apologise for the mix-up and Rebecca was called back on Tuesday, March 16th to receive her first dose.

“She was really happy after all the stress,” Bernie said, “She received her

second dose last Thursday and we stopped off for McDonald’s and Krispy Kreme drive thru on the way home!”

Bernie works as a teacher at Ballyhaunis Community School and the whole family has had to take extreme steps this past year in order to protect Rebecca.

“I haven’t really been able to mix with other staff members so I have been taking my breaks in my car just to be safe.

“I’ve been feeling like a different person since last Thursday though. The weight of the stress of cocooning and waiting for the call was unbearable at times,” she said.

Ballinasloe singer wins Glór Tire 2021!

Ballinasloe singer, Emma Donohue, was announced as the TG4 ‘Glór Tire’ winner for 2021 in The Quays in Galway on Tuesday night.

The 22-year-old student nurse, who was mentored by country music star Mike Denver, took the majority of public votes to beat David Connor from Claremorris, Co. Mayo in the final and win the cash prize of €5,000.

Speaking after her big win, Emma said: “I am absolutely delighted. You

have made one girl from Galway a very happy woman tonight.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to the team of Gaelmedia who made this experience so worthwhile and to TG4, thank you. I want to say commiserations to David and to all the other contestants who took part in the series.

You all have a fantastic future ahead of you”.

Nurse who met Queen was sister of Roscommon Olympian! < PAUL HEALY

I was pleased, but not surprised, to receive a phone call from local historian John Kerrigan last Thursday.

As so often before, he very helpfully had some information to impart.

In our edition dated 9th of April, we’d reported that a tablecloth which was presented by Queen Mary to a Roscommon nurse over 100 years ago was going for auction this week.

Eleanor Watt was handed the treasured piece of fabric by Queen Mary

during the monarch’s visit to British troops in the Royal Hospital in Richmond, Surrey, at the end of World War I. 103 years later, it found its way into a Historical Sale in Co. Meath (its ‘fate’ not known as we go to press!).

When John Kerrigan saw the article in the Roscommon People, he rang me and confirmed that Eleanor was a sister of a renowned character, the late William Watt.

John and I have discussed William Watt before, and our knowledge of him has been enhanced in recent

Book on legendary Gaelic footballers now on sale in Roscommon A major book on GAA greats is now on sale in selected local stores ahead of a public launch when Covid-19 conditions permit.

‘Our Field of Dreams’ by Kilteevan native Tom Curley is a book which features legendary Gaelic footballers, with greats from across the thirty-two counties telling their individual stories, stretching over the decades. A number of Roscommon greats feature.

Published before Christmas, the book – which is highly recommended – is available now in both SuperValu and Newsround in Roscommon Town.

There are plans for a gala public launch in due course.

This is from Mike’s entry on William Watt: ‘Watt, William F.C. (1885-1957), plumber, athlete and entertainer. A native of Surrey, England, the family moved to Roscommon in 1877, where his father set up a plumbing business. When he finished attending the local primary school, he joined his father’s business and continued to supply plumbing services until retiring in the early 1950s. He was

a successful sprinter and middledistance runner in his youth, but concentrated on the long jump as he moved into adulthood. He was selected on the Ireland team for the 1908 Olympic Games in London, where he was sixth in the long jump.

He secured a silver medal at an international event in Ballsbridge, Dublin in 1911. He was a popular singer with the Roscommon Operatic Society, and performed on the local circuit as ‘Watty Williams, female impersonator.’ When his athletic career finished, he became a prolific

golfer, billiards player, and enjoyed fishing. He died in October 1957 at Abbey Street, Roscommon, and was buried in St Coman’s Cemetery, Roscommon’.

Eleanor Watt was a sister of William’s. Little is known about Ms. Watt, apart from the fact that she trained as a nurse, becoming matron of the Royal Hospital, and never married.

John Kerrigan, meanwhile, recalls hearing many stories (from locals) of the colourful life and times of William Watt.

Julie and James combine to bring ‘Sound of Music Ballroom’ back to life!

Our man Frank on a hit song in honour of the Sound of Music ballroom; the inspirational Rachael Blackmore; and another family wedding in this strange Covid-19 era…

For all of us who grew up in the wonderful showband era, you will have been familiar with the Sound of Music ballroom in Glenamaddy. If so, I’m sure you will remember when the late Joe O’Neill turned it into one of the most popular dancehalls in the country, with all the top names of the time (like Joe Dolan, Daniel O’Donnell, Margo, Philomena Begley, and Big Tom, amongst others) more than delighted to get a gig in the East Galway village.

But what you might not have known (as indeed I didn’t until this week) is that the place started off as the Esker Ballroom, built in the late 1940s by Jim Keaveney, better known as Jim Pete. When it first opened its doors, dancing went on from 10 pm to 4 am, with full dinner included in the price of twenty shillings. Some of the best bands of the time, such as the Tony Chambers Orchestra, Maurice Mulcahy Orchestra, Johnny Flynn, Bros Walsh, and The Premier Aces from Ballintubber, all graced the Esker Ballroom stage, before Joe O’Neill bought it up in the late 1960s.

O’Neill turned the ballroom into the Las Vegas of the West, with buses coming from all over…full of dancers looking for romance at the newly-renamed Sound of Music.

If they weren’t successful in their quest for love, at least they had the

consolation of going home full of chips and burgers from the local chip vans – although the mix of a bellyful of porter with a helping of fish, burgers and chips was pretty potent, and many a fellow would be sick as a pig by the time Sunday morning came around.

However, sick or not, the following Saturday it would be full steam ahead again, and back out to the Sound of Music you would head. Then, sadly, the ballroom closed its doors. It would’ve become one of our forgotten treasures only for the fact that Glinsk man James Shevlin put pen to paper and wrote a splendid new song called, ‘The Sound of Music Ballroom’. The song was recorded

by Julie Healy, a lady who has been immersed in the world of country music for many years. She presents three shows each week on Irish Country Music Radio,

fact that Rachael doesn’t differentiate between male and female jockeys – and regards them all as equal – could be the biggest and most important legacy she leaves behind. Just how many girls will be inspired by her achievements is as yet unknown, but there can be no doubt that in the future, when Irish girls make their mark on the world stage, a lot of them will say they were inspired by the remarkable Rachael Blackmore.

One of the little twists to the story is that Rachael shares a house with her boyfriend Brian Hayes and their friend Patrick Mullins (son of Willie), and all three of them finished the gruelling course, with Mullins 4th on Burrows Saint and Hayes 15th on Class Conti.

Anyways, once again Rachael is a good news story on this Monday morning. How she can top this I have no idea, but I also know she will somehow find a way.

A few weeks ago we all marvelled at the amazing imprint Rachael Blackmore made in horse racing history when she became the first lady to be the leading jockey at the Cheltenham Festival, though she freely admitted afterwards that being pipped on the line in the Gold Cup was a huge disappointment and that it would be a long time before she got over it.

Well, on Saturday last she certainly got over it, once again rewriting the history books by becoming the first lady jockey to win the Aintree Grand National, a race that even non-racing people would know to be the toughest and most demanding in National Hunt racing. Her place as one of Ireland’s sporting heroes is guaranteed for all time.

Yet the most telling comment of all came from her mother, who simply described her daughter as a jockey, not a lady jockey, saying: “She’s just a jockey, it’s just her job”. More than anything, the

However, it is the release of ‘The Sound of Music Ballroom’ that is reaching new heights, being played all over Ireland, Australia, England and the USA, where many Irish emigrants who would have danced in Glenamaddy back in the days are delighted to hear a song bring back those special memories. All our local radio stations – Shannonside, Mid-West, and Galway Bay FM – are playing the socks off the new release, so listen out for it! Or if you want to request a dedication for anyone for a birthday, wedding anniversary, or just to say hello, give them a call and ask them to give Julie’s song a spin – you won’t be disappointed!

She tells me that it is climbing the charts here at home in Ireland, so well done Julie! I wish you and songwriter James every success with this excellent song.

Finally for this week, on Saturday last (for the second time in lockdown) we had a family wedding. Our eldest son Mark got married to his new wife Aoife in Kilanena, Co. Clare.

This time, Covid-19 affected the big day even more. Our last day out, when Lisa got married, was in Lockdown Level 3, when up to fifty people could attend. On Saturday it was confined to just six – both sets of parents and the couple themselves.

You would think that the day would’ve been diminished because of the restrictions, but surprisingly, it wasn’t. The church ceremony – celebrated by a friend of Aoife’s family – was lovely, and while it was obviously a very different day, I really enjoyed it.

The last time I was in Kilanena was more than forty years ago, when we bought furniture in Broderick’s of Kilanena, a family firm which at the time was one of the biggest suppliers of furniture in the entire country. As with a lot of businesses, they have since gone by the wayside, and it was a bit sad to see the old building – still standing, but closed now for a few years.

When Lisa got married, we could go to a hotel and have a reception; this time there was no such event. Hopefully sometime in the future we will have a right hooley to celebrate the wedding, and please God the nightmare of Covid-19 will be a thing of the past!

Roscommon food and drink producers invited to join Food Academy

Local Enterprise Office Roscommon is inviting food and drink producers from the county to join the hugely successful Food Academy programme, and follow in the footsteps of local companies such as Honest Cakes and Breads, Gannon Eggs and Poultry and Gairdín Bia, which have previously taken part.

Now in its eighth year, Food Academy is a unique food business development programme between the thirty-one Local Enterprise Offices, including Local Enterprise Office Roscommon, SuperValu and Bord Bia. Participants in the programme receive training in food safety, market research and branding, marketing, finance, sustainability and business development.

The Food Academy programme currently supports 290 Irish food and drink producers, including 140 female entrepreneurs, generating €170m in sales. In 2020, there was a 15% growth in SuperValu Food Academy sales, with participants earning €28m. The Food Academy programme supports 1,500 jobs in local communities nationwide and local producers are now being encouraged to apply for the 2021 programme before Friday, April 23rd.

Welcoming the increase in Food Academy sales through SuperValu in 2020, Louise Ward (Local Enterprise Office, Roscommon) said: “Since it was started up eight years ago by the Local Enterprise Offices, SuperValu and Bord Bia, the Food Academy programme has been hugely successful, going from strength to strength. It has helped hundreds of up and coming food and drink producers to get their products market-ready, giving them an opportunity to sell to a nationwide audience.

“The Food Academy is part of a suite of Local Enterprise Office supports designed for food and drink entrepreneurs in Ireland, such as the Digital School of Food and Food Starter programmes, both aimed at getting

Tireless work of local authorities to be recognised Chambers Ireland has recently launched the Excellence in Local Government Awards 2021, and is now inviting applications from all thirty-one Local Authorities to showcase their best work over the last year across sixteen categories.

Hosted in partnership with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, the 18th edition of the awards will seek to shine a light on achievements of local government in supporting communities, towns and cities during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ian Talbot (Chambers Ireland Chief Executive) said: “While the national government has been front and centre in directing the response to Covid-19, local authorities across Ireland have been working hard in the background to respond to the changing behaviour of the public, as so many people spend their time closer to home. This response has required agile thinking and innovative practice, qualities that have helped to deliver impressive projects and raised the bar to provide accessible amenities and infrastructure”.

In addition to the individual categories, the awards will also bestow its flagship award for ‘Local Authority of the Year’.

In 2020, Mayo County Council won this award.

The deadline for submissions to the Excellence in Local Government Awards 2021 is Friday, May 7th.

Miriam’s MUSINGS Coping with the chaos of lockdown provokes surge in eating disorders Words of wit and wisdom with MIRIAM KERINS

According to the HSE’s Model of Care for Eating Disorders, (launched in 2018), it’s estimated that approximately ‘1,757 new cases’ of these conditions ‘occur in Ireland each year in the 1049 age group’.

My reason for touching on this upsetting subject is twofold. Firstly, it comes on foot of the news that reality TV contestant Nikki Grahame, who came to prominence on Big Brother, sadly passed away last week at the young age of 38. It has been widely reported that, prior to her death, Ms. Grahame had been receiving treatment for an eating disorder at a specialist clinic following a fundraising campaign organised by her friends.

My second reason regards an item I read on www.irishexaminer.com. The article quotes Dr. Sara McDevitt, a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, as saying, “Both community eating disorder services and GPs are reporting a large rise in eating disorders during the Covid pandemic, with almost half of 2020 referrals being made in the last three months of the year to one adolescent service”.

I’m no medical expert folks, but to me, that statement suggests that this lockdown and the resulting social isolation (which is clearly

leading to many feeling they’ve lost control over their own lives), is causing a tsunami of mental health issues; and in this instance, a surge in eating disorders. I’d imagine, in an enforced environment whereby the focus is placed on staying home, on isolating ourselves from loved ones, in working remotely and in cutting ourselves off from all we hold dear, it becomes obvious that food, whether restricting it or over-indulging in it, would now dominate our humdrum existence? To put it plainly, for some, weight control has become a way of coping with the chaos caused by lockdown.

Of course we will all handle lockdown differently. For some it has proved to be a Godsend, as in they view it as being a less stressful and less pressurised situation. However, for others, the disruption caused to their carefully planned daily routines has resulted in them feeling a level of anxiety and tension. I don’t mind telling you readers, I fall into the latter category, and personally feel very disconnected from my daily tasks, my work patterns and my natural environment, etc. That being said, I do know this situation is only temporary and the easing of restrictions will bring about family gather-

Remembering Shay, a genuine gent!

As tributes pour in following the sad news of Shay Healy’s passing, I’d like to add mine to the long list. As someone who worked at our national broadcaster for many, many years, I not only shared a coffee or three with Shay in the staff canteen, (or ‘the canner’ as we called it), I also interviewed him for The Evening Herald – now known as The Herald.

Every encounter I had with Shay ended with me walking away thinking what a genuine gent, what a legend (and I’m not in the habit of bestowing the accolade ‘legend’ on many people) and what a skilful raconteur he was…wow, Shay could certainly tell a tale!

However folks, I’m sure many of you will remember Shay for his Nighthawks’ interview with former Justice Minister Sean Doherty, whose revelations regarding phone tapping not only led to the resignation of then Taoiseach Charles Haughey; his disclosure collapsed a government and sent shockwaves right across this nation. Indeed you could call it Ireland’s ‘Watergate’!

This pandemic, (and the loss of protective factors caused by it), has played a significant role in the rise of eating disorders, and from what I understand, (lockdown or no lockdown) these medical conditions, which cause a major disturbance in a person’s diet; are really quite complicated. In fact if anyone reading this column suspects that someone close to them is displaying signs of having an unhealthy relationship with food, they’ll know that raising the issue with them may prove to be somewhat awkward; indeed, I’d go so far as to suggest, it could be extremely distressing.

However, I feel it is very important to point out that while lots of people decide to change their diet in order to follow a healthier lifestyle, or to perhaps drop a bit of weight for whatever reason, very few of them will go on to develop an eating disorder. I’m sure readers, especially those of a certain age, will remember that, due to it being engulfed in quite a bit of controversy, the then government was dubbed as the GUBU administration, i.e. grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre and unprecedented.

However, my aim is not to acknowledge either the late Charles Haughey or the late Sean Doherty, (may they both rest in peace), nor is it my intention to disrespect their memories, but I have to be honest and say that neither of these politicians impressed me in the slightest. I only reference them in the context of Mr. Healy’s much-loved Nighthawks show and the fact he had no idea that Mr. Doherty – who at the time had been cast into political wilderness – had just handed him the scoop of a lifetime. Charlie, the great survivor and my former North Dublin neighbour, fell on his sword. Mr. Doherty, your former neighbour who’d allegedly carried the can, regained his seat in the 1992 General Election. May all three men Shay Healy, RIP rest in peace.

Big thanks to the staff at Roscommon University Hospital While I’d like to commend the hard work, professionalism and dedication of all frontline workers across the country, and indeed several members of my own family who are working in frontline roles, I want to give a special mention this week to the staff at Roscommon Hospital.

Some weeks ago, as I was kneeling to play with our energetic fur babies, I leaned backwards and fell down hard on my coccyx, (tailbone), badly bruising it. In short, I had a pain in my bottom which was pretty sore. As a precaution, my doctor referred me to Roscommon Hospital for a lumber spine x-ray. My appointment was for 3 pm last Thursday. I arrived at 2.55 pm, where an efficient and very pleasant porter met me inside the entrance, and, having ascertained where I was going, directed me to the x-ray department.

Once there, I dealt with a friendly receptionist who took details, invited me to take a seat and assured me I’d be seen to “within a few minutes”. She didn’t lie. In under two minutes, a lovely, cheerful radiographer escorted me into the x-ray department, proceeded to do the imagining and, quite literally, as my watch struck 3.10 pm I had been greeted, processed, x-rayed and I was standing out in the hospital car park…now how efficient is that?

Fair play to everyone who works at our county hospital; your friendliness, efficiency, and your caring and sensitive nature is, in my experience and in my humble opinion, second to none. You’re all doing an amazing job!

eacting to the recent publica-

tion of the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2021, IFA President Tim Cullinan said that while meeting the targets will be a challenge, farmers are ready to play their part.

Mr. Cullinan said: “The Government must recognise Ireland’s position as a world leader of sustainable food production. We must balance achieving environmental targets with the sector’s competitive role in producing high-quality, nutritious food at a reasonably low cost.

“Farmers are already doing a lot, and the sector has a roadmap set out

as part of the Teagasc MAC Curve.

They have invested over €80 million in Low Emission Slurry Spreading (LESS) equipment, while sales of protected urea have more than doubled in 2020. With the right supports and incentives, farmers will continue to play our part in the national effort by improving the carbon efficiency of our output”.

The IFA President said that the Government must not underestimate the scale of the challenge.

“Farmers must be supported as they transition to a more sustainable agricultural sector to meet the targets. Farming must be treated

fairly in the climate mitigation debate. Current government policy does little to reward farmers for the role they are currently playing in sequestering carbon with the sole focus on emissions. IFA will not allow Irish farm families to be blamed for inaction in other areas,” he said.

Mr. Cullinan welcomed the acknowledgement in the revised Bill of methane’s cyclical nature in GHG emissions accounting methodology.

“The Climate Action Bill must follow the New Zealand model and ensure that methane is treated differently from other emissions,” he concluded.

‘Rachael shows you can achieve anything you want to’ Melissa ‘grateful’ to spend lockdown on family farm < DAN DOONER

Melissa Glynn has kept herself busy on the family farm at Crannaghmore in south Roscommon this past year.

When not leading online learning, the young primary school teacher has been preparing for foaling season and establishing herself on social media as ‘The Equestrian Groom’.

The 26-year-old lives with her father PJ, mother Majella and brothers Darragh and Lorcan and she says she’s been lucky to spend ‘lockdown’ in the countryside.

“I am grateful to live in the countryside and particularly to live on the farm. Despite lockdown, my lifestyle has not changed much as farming continues regardless. I have spent most of my time on the farm, assisting with the day-to-day feeding and management of stock,” she said.

Melissa’s love of the great outdoors

can be seen in everything from her education to her hobbies. She graduated as a teacher from Mary Immaculate College in 2017, where she specialised in Place Based Education (essentially outdoor education). She also enjoys country music, dancing and hiking in her spare time.

“Agriculture and working with animals is where my heart lies, therefore I have always been involved in farming, alongside my parents PJ and Majella,” she said.

“We have a beef enterprise and an equine enterprise on the farm. Originally farming a suckler herd, we have transitioned into a calf to beef programme, in which we rear suck calves to produce store cattle.

“We are also involved in the equine industry. My parents established ‘Crannaghmore Stables’ in which we breed, produce, show and sell foals, yearlings, two-year-olds and

three-year-olds, as show horses and eventers”.

Some of Melissa’s earliest memories involve supporting her parents at agricultural and horse shows across the country and she has recently established herself as a breeder in her own right.

“Attending and competing at shows is the highlight of the year.

Both show season and sales involve plenty of preparation and grooming, which I am responsible for on the farm.

“I was always encouraged by my parents, who have given me wonderful opportunities in the equine industry, from showing alongside my father, to showing and producing my own stock, and they continue to support me to progress every day.

“From a young age, I purchased Connemara foals at the sales in Clifden. In recent years, I established myself as a breeder when I

Melissa now hopes to follow in the footsteps of her father and brothers, who have claimed 1st place and Reserve Champion prizes at the Royal Dublin Show.

“Among my successful moments were competing and placing in the All-Ireland Senior Handler at the National Ploughing Championships in 2019, competing in the ‘Eventing Performance Foal’ Select Foal Sales with my homebred foal, which was organised by the May Roscommon Breeders Group in 2020, and my involvement with the Irish Young Breeders Programme in conjunction with Horse Sport Ireland (HSI) and Teagasc in 2019 and 2020.

“My proudest moment as a breeder was when I bred ‘Crannaghmore I Am With You’ out of ‘Stuck in a Moment’ and ‘DS Are You With Me’. This foal placed second in the Breeders Select Foal Sales ‘Eventing Performance Foal’ in conjunction

with Mayo Roscommon Breeders Group, which was held in Glenamaddy Equestrian Centre last August,” she said.

Through her involvement with Teagasc’s Young Breeders Programme, Melissa also qualified for the selection of teams to represent Ireland at the 2019 International Young Breeders World Championships.

If all of this wasn’t enough, Melissa was also heavily involved with Macra na Feirme and was crowned ‘Reserve Queen of the Land’ in 2017 and competed as Roscommon’s ‘Queen of the Land’ in Sligo in the same year.

She says that jockey Rachael Blackmore’s recent whirlwind success at both Cheltenham and Aintree will encourage other young women to become more involved in the equine industry too and that with dedication and hard work anything is possible.

“Rachael’s success will most certainly have a positive impact on young women’s involvement in the equine industry, she is an outstanding role model, which proves with hard work and dedication you can achieve anything you want to,” she said.

Melissa has taken to social media recently to share her own journey within the industry.

“During lockdown I established an Instagram account (The_Equestrian_Groom) to share much of this.

Although equine grooming is not currently in use, due to restrictions, I hope to expand my page and grooming community when the time is right,” she said.

For now though, she is preparing for a busy period at the family farm and stables as lockdown restrictions continue to ease.

“This is a busy but rewarding time of year on the farm, as we are currently rearing suck calves and are in the middle of foaling season at ‘Crannaghmore Stables’, with our broodmares commencing foaling in late February. My broodmare ‘Stuck in a Moment’ is due to foal on May 1s so I’m eagerly awaiting that.

“A selection of mares are also going to stud for covering while others are getting AI at home, so we have spent some time with stallion considerations to make the best breeding choice for each mare,” she said.

Maria: ‘Many opportunities for women in the agri sector!’

ria Hester has been busy throughout lockdown with both her day job at Kepak and her work on the family farm at Meelickaduff.

“I live on a small suckler farm outside Castlerea. We run a mix of commercial and pedigree Limousin cows. My brother Owen is actively involved in the farm with our parents Ann and Micheál, and I’m also helping when I’m not working with Kepak,” she said.

The 27-year-old is a former Castlerea Community School student who went on to study Rural Enterprise & Agri-business at GMIT. She currently works as a Procurement

Assistant with the Kepak Group.

“I work with Kepak’s Agricultural team across our Irish sites and I organise agricultural events as well as working on projects with a number of external bodies.

“I’ve always had a keen interest in farming from a young age and was lucky enough to have had everything from pigs to ponies growing up!”

Maria said GMIT was the perfect stepping stone into the workforce and believes there are more and more opportunities for young women in the agri sector.

“There are plenty of opportunities and I think International Women’s

Day highlighted the many ways in which women can play a role in the industry and thankfully there are employment opportunities with companies right across the west of Ireland,” she said.

As for living in County Roscommon, Maria said Covid-19 has highlighted the advantages of living and working in rural Ireland.

“We have seen in the last year how quickly things can change and how employers and employees have had to adapt to those changes. I think there are many positives to these changes and it has meant less time commuting and much better worklife balance,” she said.

Owen: ‘I was working in a tunnel in Mumbai when Covid hit!’

1-year-old Owen Hester is now back on the family farm outside Castlerea following some post-secondary school adventures on the other side of the world.

“I finished at Castlerea Community School and went travelling to New Zealand,” he said. “The following year I went to Mumbai in India to work. I was working in a tunnel as part of construction for a new underground metro line when Covid-19 hit”.

Working twelve and fourteen-hour days, Owen says he was too busy to give the virus too much thought.

“I wasn’t too worried about because we still didn’t know what it was at that stage. But the mother and father were a bit worried and I decided to come home before

things got worse,” he added.

Owen is now learning on the job with Brennan Forestry in Williamstown while studying Agri-Mechanisation and Engineering online at LIT – but travelling also helped to broaden his mind.

“I didn’t really know what I wanted to do in school but my teachers helped me to fill out the CAO and I’m glad now to be studying something I’m interested in.

“There’s a lot of pressure on young people to go straight to college though and I would encourage more young people to go travelling when we’re allowed do so again.

“Visiting India in particular was a very humbling experience. A lot of people over there are just existing. What got me was the contrast

between life in New Zealand and life in India and also the contrasts in India. You could drive past a Rolls Royce garage one minute before driving through a street filled with beggars the next,” he said.

His time in India gave Owen a new appreciation for life back on the farm in Roscommon.

“I do enjoy living here. The social aspect is gone for now but being away gave me a greater appreciation for our local community,” he said.

“I think Covid has shown us how vulnerable some jobs are but when working from home there’s less travelling time to work and it means you can have more time to do other things in the evenings,” he said.

ICMSA: Remove TB inconclusive animals with compensation C

ommenting on the Department of Agriculture, Food & Marine’s recent announcement in relation to the treatment of TB inconclusive animals, the Deputy President of ICMSA, Lorcan McCabe, said farmers should be given the option to remove an ‘inconclusive animal’, when identified on a voluntary basis, and be compensated under the live market valuation system.

“The system proposed by the Department is going to involve additional red tape, time and costs for both the Department and the farmers. That’s why ICMSA is calling for an additional option whereby a

farmer can remove an inconclusive TB animal straight away from their herd with market compensation if that’s what they choose,” Mr. McCabe said.

“If we are serious about reducing the levels of TB and in a context where the Department have identified inconclusive animals as a potential source, then ICMSA is firmly of the view that resources need to be allocated to the process upfront and providing a voluntary option of removing them would be a step in the right direction.

“We need to give farmers an incentive to remove these animals early

and we can eliminate a potential source of future infection. The process of retesting inconclusive animals every six months and the cost and labour involved in such a process would easily exceed the costs and economic benefits of voluntary removal of inconclusive animals when identified,” he added.

“The inconclusive policy as currently structured will involve extra time and cost that could be better devoted to other issues. ICMSA will repeat its call for a voluntary inconclusive removal policy at the next TB Forum”, concluded Mr. McCabe.

FA Animal Health Chairman Pat Far-

rell has said that Ireland’s veterinary medicines regime is extremely robust, and farmers use of veterinary medicines are of the highest standards. He said this was confirmed by the annual Department of Agriculture’s Residue Monitoring reports highlighted on RTÉ’s Prime Time on Tuesday, April 6th.

“Farmers understand and comply with withdrawal periods when treating our animals. We are the people legally responsible for the health and welfare of all the animals under our care, despite unfounded claims to the contrary by one contributor to the RTÉ programme,” Mr. Farrell said.

The Animal Health Chairman also noted that the use of antibiotics had reduced considerably on farms.

“IFA, the Department of Agriculture and industry stakeholders work together on the National Antimicrobial Committee, developing strategies that ensure antibiotics are prescribed and used responsibly, which effectively addresses the concerns associated with Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

“Clearly, some of the veterinary lobby

comments are driven by a commercial agenda to create a monopoly in the ‘sale and supply’ of veterinary medicines by removing competition from the area.

“Comments by Veterinary Ireland reps on the programme about ‘industrial-type farms’ and alleging the illegal importation of veterinary medicines from Northern Ireland are grossly misleading,” he added.

Mr. Farrell said the Department of Agriculture is currently deciding how to implement the new EU Veterinary Medicines Regulation in 2022.

“The Minister for Agriculture, Charlie McConalogue, must resist the concerted effort by the veterinary lobby to restrict access to all veterinary medicines to vets only, which could result in a dangerous conflict of interest,” he said.

“Ireland already has a robust system where pharmacies and licensed merchants play a crucial role in servicing some of the animal health needs of farmers. They provide advice and guidance on certain issues and can sell some products under strict controls. The system is working, and there is no need to change it”.

FA Livestock Chairman Brendan Golden said the phased reopening of the food service sector in the UK will increase demand for Irish beef and must translate into higher beef prices.

“The food service sector in the UK is a key outlet for Irish beef and the phased reopening from last Monday is a significant development for beef sales,” he said.

He said prices continue to edge upwards, but are not closing the gap with the Prime Export Benchmark price, which is at 11c/kg.

He added that factories are currently paying €3.90/kg for steers and €4.00/kg for heifers, with higher deals for larger and specialist lots. Cows are making from €3.20/kg for P grades and up to €3.70/kg at the top end for good quality R and U grading cows.

“The key driver in the marketplace at the moment is the UK as EU R3 Young Bull prices lag behind our current price by 9c/kg.

“The food service sector in the UK is scheduled for full reopening in May. This will increase demand for beef in the coming weeks and must return meaningful beef price increases,” he said.

nity activist Andrew Reynolds has said the county’s farming community should not be forgotten during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and that outdoor events such as agricultural shows should be allowed to proceed under restrictions.

Mr. Reynolds said: “Year on year, members of the agricultural community have looked forward to, and greatly enjoyed, agricultural shows

The heifer ring had a very good clearance with the top lots reaching €3.47 a kilo with the breeding heifers in strong demand. The weanling heifer ring had a similar tone with prices peaking at €4.03 a kilo while the bull weanlings noticed price improvement this week especially for the stronger lots.

“However, as with many other outdoor events last year, because of the threat of the spread of Covid 19, these agricultural shows fell victim.

As things stand, it is hoped that some of these popular events will return this year, but it will depend on the spread of Covid”.

Mr. Reynolds says it is essential that such events go ahead with regulations such as social distancing

and limited attendances in place.

“Hard-working committees have been planning for these for a long time, and communities have already lost one long summer.

“The return of outdoor social events would be a welcome boost to towns and villages nationwide, and would also help the mental health of people who are finding it hard to cope with the social isolation that comes with this pandemic,” he concluded.

Roscommon MART WATCH There was another large entry of top-quality cattle on offer with a flying trade and a good demand for all classes with plenty of online bidders actively sourcing stock.

Bullocks averaged from €2.49 per kilo up to €3.19 per kilo. Heifers fetched from an average of €2.39 per kilo up to €2.90 per kilo. Dry cows made from an average of €1.82 per kilo up to a high of €2.33 per kilo Friday next (16th) will see a special sale of heifers, bullocks and dry cows.

There was a good entry of weanlings on offer at Tuesday’s sale with a solid trade for both bulls and heifers. Weanling heifers ranged from an average of €2.47 per kilo up to €3.65 per kilo with only one lot unsold.

“Prices for weanling bulls were improved this week with lots fetching from an average of €2.60 per kilo up to €3.86 per kilo. Again this week, customers were very anxious for stock which resulted in a very good clearance of lots. Next sale of weanlings: Tuesday, April 20th.

Rossies to resume with glamour tie against Dubs < SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon’s senior footballers will open their 2021 Allianz National Football League season with a glamour home tie against six-in-a-row All-Ireland champions Dublin on Sunday, May 16th. The following Sunday, Anthony Cunningham’s side will travel to face Galway, and the campaign will be completed with a home game against Kerry at Dr. Hyde Park on Sunday, May 30th.

Roscommon will play in Division 1A. The top two teams in the division will face the top two teams in Division 1B in the semi-finals, while the bottom two teams will face a relegation play-off.

Roscommon hurlers will play in Division 2B of the league and will start with an away game against Donegal on Sunday, May 8th. After that, it’s a home game against Mayo on May 15th. Then there’s a couple of weeks’ break, with the next fixture being against Kildare at home on June 6th. The campaign will end with an away fixture in Derry on June 12th.

In the Lidl Ladies National Football League, Roscommon, under new manager Diane O’Hora, will play in Division 3A, opening their campaign with a home tie against Fermanagh on May 23rd. On May 30th, Roscommon have another home fixture, against Down, and their final game will be away to Sligo on May 30th.

In the Littlewoods Camogie National League, Roscommon will operate in Division 4. Roscommon will open their campaign with a home game against Mayo on May 15th, and on May 22nd it’s an away tie against Louth. Then on May 29th, it’s a trip to face Kildare.

Inter-county teams will be allowed to commence training from Monday, May 19th. The draws for the senior football and hurling championships for 2021 will be made next week on RTÉ, with the Connacht SFC draw taking place on the SixOne News on Monday evening.

BANishing Rule 27: The GAA remembers of the lifting of the ban. There was a webinar on Monday night featuring author and historian Cormac Moore, and on Thursday (15th), Donal McAllen hosts a discussion with former Republic of Ireland soccer manager and ex-GAA inter-county player, Martin O’Neill.

I was contacted by the GAA to take part in the webinars this week, which was a welcome surprise. I greatly appreciate that my father was remembered after all this time.

On April 11th 1971, at its annual Congress in Belfast, the GAA took the momentous decision to abolish the controversial Rule 27, which banned members of the Association from playing or watching other sports such as rugby, soccer or hockey. The rule was in place from 1905 to 1971.

The so-called ‘Ban’ had become an increasingly controversial issue in the GAA throughout the early years of the 20th century. Such was the consensus among counties for its removal in 1971, there was little or no debate at the Congress. On the day, the removal of Rule 27 was proposed by Dublin and seconded by Antrim, and Pat Fanning, the President at the time, declared that the rule had been abolished.

There were several controversies in the GAA prior to the removal of the ban, with well-known players using assumed names when playing soccer or rugby, and GAA members who attended so-called ‘foreign games’ also being liable for suspension. The most high profile incident happened in 1938, when President of Ireland, Roscommon man Douglas Hyde attended a soccer international at Dalymount Park between Ireland and Poland, alongside the Taoiseach at the time, Éamon de Valera.

ance at the game prompted many calls to have him removed from that role. On December 17th, 1938 at a meeting of the GAA, Hyde was indeed removed from his position. Meanwhile, de Valera faced no sanction as he was not a GAA member.

My late father, also Seamus Duke, was one of five Roscommon delegates who attended that historic Congress in 1971. Just over a month later, he died suddenly at the age of 45.

Racing in Ireland this afternoon is on over the jumps at Green Park in Limerick, first race off at 1.55 pm. Tomorrow evening racing is in the west at picturesque Ballinrobe, again over the sticks, off at 4.20 pm.

The Curragh takes centre stage on Saturday with an 8-race card featuring the Gladness Stakes and Alleged Stakes, both Group 3 races, off at 1.30 pm.

There is a meeting on the all-weather at Dundalk’s Polytrack on Sunday, racing starts at 1.10 pm. Sunday also sees racing over the sticks at Tramore, the first of a two-day meeting, away at 1.30 pm with an evening meeting on Monday at 4.35 pm and the replacement National Hunt meeting at Limerick on Monday, following the double cancellation in February, will start at 1.45 pm.

The cross-channel meetings at Ayr and Newbury this weekend have been moved forward a day to Sunday avoiding a clash with the funeral of The Duke of Edinburgh, resulting in no racing on ITV on Saturday but on Sunday they are covering five races from each course including the Scottish Grand National. There are six races being covered by TG4 from Dundalk on Sunday.

After last week’s big-priced winners at Fairyhouse, 125/1 shot Vera Verto made every post a winning one at Gowran yesterday week over 9f. The Jack Davidson trained 3-Y-O filly sprang a big shock winning the

fillies maiden in the hands of Ronan Whelan jumped out and led from start to finish beating Cappy and The Blue Brilliant by ¾l and 2½l.

Ciaran Murphy, who trains outside Mullingar, proved he is just at home on the flat as over jumps producing Lust For Life to beat Aingeal Dorcha and Benkogambit by a head and a short head in a thrilling three-way finish in the Good Enuf To Eat Catering Handicap. The winner was making her debut in handicap company and was ridden by Shane Foley.

Racing News Harry Cobden who was taken to hospital after parting company with Lucky One in the Betway Mersey Novices’ Hurdle has been forced to end his campaign early with further checks revealing fractures in his cheekbone and will require surgery. Paul Nichols other jockey Bryony Frost was also taken to hospital but hopes to be back within a week.

British amateur jockey Lorna Brooke is in a serious but stable condition following her fall off Orchastrated at Taunton in Thursday’s Pontispool Equine Sports Centre Handicap Chase.

Racing was delayed by more than an hour as she was treated on track before being transferred into an air ambulance to Southmeads Hospital in Bristol where she is undergoing observations and tests for a suspected spinal injury.

Ballinrobe Racecourse opens its 2021 season tomorrow with the first fixture of 2021, a national hunt card. There will be ten race-meetings at Ballinrobe this year, the 100th year that racing has taken place on this course, and on May 25th the McHale Mayo National Handicap Chase, the first graded race to be run at Ballinrobe, will be run for the second year.

Entries for the twelve Grade 1 races at the Festival, which runs from April 27th to May 1st, include the likes of Honeysuckle, Minella Indo, Put The Kettle On, Flooring Porter, Al Boum Photo, Allaho and Chacun Pour Soi, while Epatante, Goshen and Nube Negra are among the highprofile names from the UK. William Hill are the new sponsors of the Champion Chase on the Punchestown Festival's opening day. The featured the €250,000 William Hill Champion Chase is part of a major three-year deal. The Grade 1 event has been won by the likes of Moscow Flyer, Sizing Europe and Un De Sceaux, while Sprinter Sacre beat Sizing Europe in 2013.

Point to Point News There were two point-topoint meetings last Saturday and Sunday, Duhallow raced on the track at Cork and Scarteen at Tipperary. While it is great to see point to point racing back it is only for 4 and 5-YO’s and of the eight winners at Cork, four were declared for sale after racing as were three of the eight at Tipperary.

In all probability nearer to 75% will not be seen again and the owners cannot be blamed for taking the money and running. There should be open races and maidens to

cater for the man that holds onto his horse and they are the backbone of the game. As it was there were too many 4-YO maidens, which normally divide, usually by one or two over the limit amazingly. The same can be said of most of the 5-Y-O races. These are the races where if a horse wins, he is sold for big money.

Next weekend, Meath and Tara race at Fairyhouse on Saturday and Sunday and there are two 4-Y-O and 5-YO races advertised each day which will be again divided to make 8-card meetings. What will happen when normality returns and there are not sufficient 4 and 5-Y-O’s to make up a card and there are no older horses left in training.

Aintree Review Last Thursday, the Grand National meeting at Aintree started with a Grade 1 race win for the brothers Dan and Harry Skelton in the first with Protektorat who beat Emmet Mullins’ The Shunter, running in new colours of JP McManus, by 3¾l.

The second was also a Grade 1 Juvenile Hurdle going to Monmiral trained by Paul Nichols and ridden by Harry Cobden who went on to complete a double in the Grade 1 Bowl Chase with Clan Des Obeaux. Tiger Roll finished a creditable fourth in the race.

The fourth Grade 1 of the day went to the Irish with Denise Foster’s Abracadabras winning the Aintree Hurdle.

Shor t putts The course will re-open to play on Monday, April 26th. There will be some restrictions in place, including: there will be no competitions organised by the club in the short-term and a maximum of two different households can play together in one group.

The other restrictions are generally those that were in operation last year – adaptations to the hole, all golf to be booked online, etc. Golf Ireland has issued a ‘Return to Play’ protocol, and the full conditions are available on the Golf Ireland website.

Some great work has been done on the course in the last few weeks – the greens have been hollow cored, a practice net is set to be installed, and branches have been trimmed back – all in preparation for April 26th!

For all who have paid membership, the club will be posting out acknowledgements to distance members. The club has no paid employees on the administrative side so this move is to make things easier from a volunteer point of view and to reduce the club’s postal costs.

The club expresses condolences to Rosemary and the Callan family on the death of Tom in recent weeks. Tom was a great supporter of Boyle Golf Club for several decades and served the club in numerous capacities including as Treasurer in the 1950s, two stints as Captain (in 1959 and 1976) and as President in 1990. Tom’s father Christopher had also served as Captain in the 1940s. He was also instrumental in the biggest development in the club’s history, the move from the old course in Warren to its current location in Knockadoobrusna in 1970.

Tom maintained an interest in club affairs throughout the years and was a valued source of information for the book chronicling the history of the club that was written for the club’s centenary year in 2011. May he rest in peace.

In her third Grand National, Rachael Blackmore completed a journey, started by Charlotte Brew on Barony Fort in 1977, becoming the first lady rider to

win the famous race and earned her place in the history books.

Minella Times has been raised 14lbs to a mark of 159 by the Irish handicapper with Balko Des Flos 6lbs and Any Second Now 3lbs following the race.

Dermot McLoughlin's Freewheelin Dylan has been handed an 8lbs hike, to 145, for his Irish Grand National win at Fairyhouse.

Father and daughter Paul and Meagan Nichols brought a family orientated meeting to a close when Meagan won the bumper on Knappers Hill trained by Paul. The 5-Y-O beat Peking Rose and Stage Star by ½l and 1¼l. Roll on Punchestown at the end of the month and more top-class jumping action and hopefully more British runners than were in Fairyhouse.

Soccer Soccer season to be declared ‘null and void’

The 2020/2021 Roscommon & District Football League season is expected to be declared null and void due to the ongoing pandemic – but it is believed that officials remain hopeful of hosting a oneoff cup competition this summer to mark the 50th anniversary of the league.

The current season ground to a halt after just one round of matches last October and it is now likely that it will be cancelled – with a new season beginning in August of this year.
