I own an XL Bully dog that has made some headlines recently for all the wrong reasons.

The breed has a reputation for being vicious.

My neighbour has complained to me about the fact that my dog does not wear a collar or muzzle. My dog has not attacked anyone before and I consider him to be a relatively quiet animal.

Will I be liable if he attacks someone?

The Control of Dogs Act 1986 imposes a strict liability for any injury or damage caused by a dog. This means that the owner of a dog shall be liable in damages for damage caused in an attack on any person by the dog and for injury done by it to any livestock. It shall not be necessary for the person seeking such damages to show a previous mischievous propensity in the dog, or the owner’s knowledge of such previous propensity, or to show that such injury or damage was attributable to neglect on the part of the owner.

Dogs must at all times wear a collar that bears the name and the address of the owner inscribed on it or on a plate, badge or disc. Failure to have identification on a dog can result in an on-the-spot fine issued by a dog warden.

Certain breeds of dog, including strains and cross breeds, must be muzzled whenever they are in a public place and must be kept on a short strong lead by a person over 16 years who is capable of controlling them. Such breeds include American Pit Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Doberman Pinscher, English Bull Terrier, German Shepherd (Alsatian), Japanese Akita, Japanese Tosa, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Bandog.

Although an XL Bully dog, is not on the main restricted list it is categorised under the ‘Bandog’ tag as restricted.

You must also hold a dog licence for your dog.

All dogs over four months must have a licence.

Tributes to young man who died in traffic collision Tributes have been paid to the young man who died following a singlevehicle traffic collision outside Roscommon Town in the early hours of Sunday morning last.

The death of Ian Conlon, who was in his early 20s, has numbed the community and led to an outpouring of support and sympathy for his family.

Gardaí said they were alerted to a single-vehicle road traffic collision at Scrine Hill at approximately 2.50 am on Sunday, October 8th.

Ian Conlon of Slieve, Donamon, Co. Roscommon was fatally injured.

In a statement posted on social media, Oran GAA Club expressed deep shock and sadness on hearing of the death of the local man.

The club described the deceased as “a likeable and friendly young man who was well known around the parish” and someone who was

extremely helpful to others.

“As a player, Ian played at all levels for Oran, winning a county minor title in 2015 and also lining out for our juniors in the 2018 final”.

The statement continued: “Ian was an obliging neighbour… he would help a person

without hesitation. He was particularly generous with his time to younger kids showing them different farming skills and methods.

“Although Ian has gone too soon, he will be fondly remembered as the friendly young man who always made time to talk to young and old alike. The club would like to express its deepest sympathies to his parents Martin and Nuala, his siblings Chloe, Damien and Niall, and the whole Conlon family, as well as his friends and neighbours”.

Oran Hurling Club also offered its condolences to the Conlon family on the passing of Ian, a former underage and junior hurler with the club.

Cllr. Emer Kelly said everybody in the locality is in shock at news of Ian’s tragic death. Stating that her thoughts go out to the Conlon family at this difficult time, Cllr. Kelly extended her sincere condolences to

Ian’s family and friends on their great loss.

After reposing at his home in Slieve, the removal took place to St Patrick’s Church, Clooneycolgan. Mass of the Resurrection on Thursday (October 12th) was followed by burial afterwards in Oran Cemetery.

The late Ian Conlon is mourned by his parents Nuala and Martin, sister Chloe, brothers Damien and Niall, further relatives and many friends.

May he rest in peace. *Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them. Any road users who were travelling in the area in the early hours of Sunday morning between 2.30 am and 3 am, and who may have camera footage (including dashcam), is asked to contact Roscommon Garda Station on 090 663 8300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

American journalists discover Roscommon’s Great Outdoors

Tourism Ireland invited eight American journalists to visit Roscommon and Ireland over the past week.

The group – many of whom are members of the Outdoor Writers Association of America – includes writers, digital content creators and podcasters, who have a combined audience of millions of readers and followers.

The writers’ action-packed

itinerary – which had a focus on ‘green’ experiences and soft adventure – was designed by Fáilte Ireland and included Lough Key Forest Park, where they did a Boda Borg challenge and enjoyed lunch in the Lakeside Café.

Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s Head of North America, said: “Tourism Ireland was delighted to invite this group of influential

writers and content creators to visit Roscommon and Ireland, to come and enjoy some of our superb outdoor activities and sustainable experiences. THURSDAY US political drama

The drama continues in American politics, where society is now dangerously divided. Extremists are in their element. It is worrying for the future of democracy itself.

The latest shockwaves to hit the political system there saw Kevin McCarthy become the first ever Speaker of the House of Representatives to be removed from office.

The publicly declared reason for his humiliating downfall – at the hands of members of his own party – was that it had to do with spending and policy, but in reality it was personal, a ruthless move by Republican rebels who plotted the overthrowing of their own man.

While this drama was being played out, the shadow of Donald Trump loomed large, the former President continuing to stir up passions and division in his unique style.

FRIDAY THAT Late Late Show…

I can see why people enjoy the Late Late Show country music special. It showcases the industry’s leading performers singing much-loved songs during what is, after all, a flourishing era for country music in Ireland, where the past decade or more has seen a spectacular revival in popularity for that genre.

I respect the performers who have been packing venues out nationwide in recent years. But I still consider life too short to fully commit to an entire Late Late Show country special, choosing instead to merely briefly check out tonight’s latest version of the annual love-in. For some viewers, there’s still a bit too much forced bonhomie involved!

From the half hour or so that I watched, it certainly came

across – no surprises here – that new host Patrick Kielty is much more comfortable with the genre than Ryan Tubridy was. Tubridy always tried his best to look excited, entertained and energised by the country music phenomenon, when viewers actually knew he’d have been happier if trapped in an elevator with salivating members of a Dáil committee.

It was good to see that great character Philomena Begley still going strong. Over 50 years ago, my late parents launched The Kon Tiki Bar & (Singing) Lounge on an unsuspecting public, down Rooskey way.

Philomena Begley was a big draw in The Kon Tiki in those days. In fairness, many of the songs sang then and since – mawkish and all as some of them might be – are a part of the soundtrack of Irish rural life.

It’s good to see country music thriving in Ireland, but it’s still hard for some of us to sit through an entire LLS ‘special’. I watched for a while, before disloyally turning over to my recording of the smug quipsters on Have I Got News For You? Sorry!

SATURDAY/SUNDAY Weekend sport

St Brigid’s were magnificent in Dr Hyde Park on Saturday, a clinical firsthalf performance ending Roscommon Gaels’ hopes of an upset. The Gaels stuck to their thankless task after the break, but St Brigid’s – oozing class – eased to a 15-point win. On this form, they look odds-on to collect another Fahey Cup; time will tell.

After attending the Brigid’s-Gaels game, it was back home to settle in front of the television for the eagerlyawaited Ireland-Scotland game at the Rugby World Cup. Scotland have improved in recent years, and are often full of flair, so this was nicely set up for the underdogs.

Indeed many in the Scottish camp had very willingly talked up their prospects of beating Ireland.

Any doubts about Ireland’s current pedigree, mindset and calmness under pressure were soon dispensed with as Andy Farrell’s team produced a devastatingly brilliant performance – in

defence and attack – to win with ease.

On Sunday, Boyle made it to another county senior final, after a tense semifinal against Padraig Pearses. For Boyle, the dream of winning a first senior title in almost a century is still very much alive.

MONDAY (Not) a moving experience…

It seems there were more big butterflies around houses this year than usual. I have no evidence to back that claim up, but the summer months were certainly notable for the remarkable number of fluttering butterflies showing up in houses. I heard a number of people reporting that as their experience. It may be that if you have seen a lot of butterflies in your house, they have been hibernating in a chimney, or the attic.

As they tend to appear stranded after a while, I went into full life-saving mode with one or two this year, ‘trapping’ them in a container and then releasing them back into the (outside) world.

Huge spiders are another kettle of fish (whatever). Recently, I noticed one in a corner in our house, lurking under the desk where I sometimes work. I meant to move the spider, but forgot to. Next day, I noticed it hadn’t moved itself. In fairness, it may have voluntarily halted its progress after coming within earshot of Danny Healy-Rae on the telly. Slightly intrigued, I went about my business. On day three, this large spider was still in the same spot, as stationary as the Queen’s Guards at Buckingham Palace.

Today (day four), I planned to formally remove the presumably dead spider to the great outdoors, only to discover that it was no longer there. It had moved (and wasn’t dead). The WorldWideWeb (aptly) has lots to say about motionless spiders. Seemingly they will sometimes stay in one place for many days, as they are conserving energy ahead of pouncing on their prey. I presume it’s much the same concept (quaint, in their case) with the Queen’s Guards!

TUESDAY Breaking: Budget…

I hope today’s Budget was good for you. I got home from the office at 8 pm, and couldn’t face the Tonight Show (Virgin Media) or Prime Time (RTE).

Neither was there a spider sitting in front of the TV, all motivated to watch the usual blah blah blah. While very mindful of how the Budget affects our lives, and having earlier in the day looked at some of the headline decisions, we turned our gaze from the often tiresome analysis – and instead continued watching Breaking Bad, which we’ve only recently caught up with.

Breaking Bad is brilliant, and, for all its drama, murder and mayhem, probably less stressful than all those Budget statistics and postmortems.

Dermot Earley bursary Nominations are now being accepted for consideration of the annual Dermot Earley Sports Bursary, which honour the former Roscommon GAA great and former Chief of Staff of the Irish Defence Forces.

Two scholarships are being provided, for one male and one female student. The scholarships will afford financial assistance to the two successful candidates who reside in County Roscommon.

All applicants must be attending their first year in third level education beginning autumn 2023, with an accomplished background in sport. Applications must be submitted through Online Services on the Roscommon County Council website.

About a dozen people are sitting around a table in the community arts café in Roscommon town, chatting and laughing.

Some embroider or knit, one man is focussed on an artist’s easel, and another is creating a mosaic vase from pieces of broken glass.

Teresa O’Brien, Project Officer with Roscommon LEADER Partnership (RLP), jokes that some are more interested in “slagging” than on creating, and indeed the atmosphere seems to be as laidback and sociable as in any café.

This one is open on Wednesday mornings, from 10 am to 1 pm, and it’s a place where people with an interest in arts and crafts, and in meeting people, gather to share stories and skills.

Teresa, the facilitator, who works in the SICAP (Social Inclusion Community Activation Programme) with RLP is a firm believer in the therapeutic powers of creativity, but is keen to stress that this café is open to anyone, including those who believe they have little artistic skills.

Having previously hosted a creative arts therapy workshop, she says the participants of that project decided they wanted a venue where they could come and create and be with other like-minded people.

“It is led by them and it is very informal’” said Teresa. “People drop in and out, and while there is some beautiful art here, it is not about what they produce. We have people who come and do mindful colouring, some do sculpture, some knit or crochet – and some are great for slagging. It really is open to anyone”.

Probably one of the more talented artists there on the morning the Roscommon People dropped in was Eamon Hayden from Oran, an expert on mosaics who highly recommends the café for many reasons.

“Absolutely it is therapeutic”, he said. “I have had mental health difficulties and it is a big part of my keeping well. You meet people here and there is a nice atmosphere and then when you go to the markets you also meet people”.

Eamon, who sells his work at markets in Castlerea and Athleague and at Christmas fairs, says people also give each other encouragement and share skills.

“People think they are not artistic but when you come to a group like this, you watch, and you think maybe I can do that. It is just (a question of) confidence”.

While the participants tend to be over 18, there is no upper age limit and one family, who have had three generations involved, are testament to the broad appeal of the project.

Helen Sherwin, who embroiders, is there with her parents Brian and Linda Gill, while her daughter Hope (17), a Leaving Cert student in Roscommon Community College, has also attended.

“It is very important to me” said Helen, a qualified nurse. “I needed to get out of the house and meet people, which I wasn’t doing. I was staying at home. And this has got me involved in other things. I now go to a book club and a jewellery-making class”.

Helen’s mother is busily embroidering a tablecloth while her father is clearly enjoying the atmosphere. She says the couple hadn’t been getting out much since Covid.

“Dad is blind so he enjoys coming in and having the interaction with other people”, said Helen. Raising her voice so he can hear, she quips: “Dad likes to listen to us gossiping”. Her father beams and nods in agreement.

Hope, who is studying art for the Leaving Cert, has been making keyrings and earrings from resin. “Hope got the confidence to do that by coming here. She is really looking forward to her Halloween holiday so she can come back”.

Helen believes the informal atmosphere at the café, which is based in RLP headquarters in Roscommon town, means nobody feels under pressure.

New lease of life

Vicki Willetts, a former training officer with the HSE, says that since she retired the café has given her a new lease of life. Originally from Lancashire in the UK, and in Co. Roscommon for over 20 years, she has a degree in textile design but says it is only since she retired that she has pursued her intertest in all things artistic.

“I have done loads of things here – book binding, tambour work which wasn’t very successful, drawing, embroidery and crochet”.

Asked why she comes along to the café, she says: “It is great craic. It is the company, meeting like-minded people, and if you try a new craft there is always somebody who has got some input. You share skills”.

Living on her own, Vicki loves the social aspect and has made good friends among the group.

“It is rare that you can find a group that is so diverse and that stimulates. I feel completely energised when I come.

And it’s about meeting people, because I am on my own.

What I get from it is that it is great fun, a great laugh”.

While she always had a creative instinct, Vicki said that until she retired it was “on hold” but now she is enjoying a whole new lease of life. “This is my chance to do what I have always had a passion for”.

A while back, the North Runway at Dublin Airport opened, and for many residents who live under the new flight path, the noise of the low-flying aircraft has made life unbearable, with people experiencing huge levels of anxiety and stress.

Leona Cantwell, who lives in Kilsallaghan, said flights pass over her home every two minutes, and in her words, it’s “soul destroying and absolute torture”. She is suffering from severe mental

health stress. Her little girl, who is seven years old, cries going to bed every night due to the noise of the planes, and everyone in the house has to wear earplugs.

Ms Cantwell says she had made complaints to the Dublin Airport Authority and Fingal County Council every day, but has received no satisfactory response. She says her husband’s parents have farmed there all their lives but never experienced anything like this.

Many residents say they bought their houses in recent years and checked the DAA’s website to make sure they would not be directly under the flight path. As one of them said, they understood they would be in the vicinity of aircraft, but would never dream of buying a house where the noise would be so unbearable.

Countdown to Creggs Harvest Festival

There is no doubt that the older one gets, the faster time flies, but it is still hard to believe that the Creggs Harvest Festival is almost on us again, with all kinds of activities lined up for the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of the month.

There will be full details in this newspaper over the next couple of weeks, but on Friday, October 27th, the ladies have a very special night out in store, when professional style adviser Maria Carton will hold an exclusive fashion class in the school hall.

When Maria is finished with you, you won’t know yourself and will be in huge demand for the dance floor later on at The Boogiemen in Mikeen’s, such will be the positive transformation. It all kicks off at 8 pm, with a cheese and wine party (with tea/coffee) from 7.30 pm.

As it happens, last week we watched a programme on RTÉ about the issues affecting all those people near the North Runway, and the truth is I’d never have thought about it again if we hadn’t heard the loud noise of a plane flying overhead as we sat at our kitchen table in Creggs.

It was late in the evening, a bit after 10.30 pm, and the noise was sufficient to make an impact in our very rural home.

Thanks to the magic of flight radar, I could see that the plane, on a journey from Qatar to Chicago, was passing our area at a height of 39,000 feet. The fact that we were impacted at all by an

What, if anything, can be done to alleviate their suffering, I don’t know. For now, I certainly sympathise with the experience of all affected by this. When a plane at 39,000 feet can disturb us in Creggs, what must it be like for those unfortunate enough to have to put up with it all the time? *In Dublin, we had the pleasure of babysitting our two-and-a-bit-year-old granddaughter, Riley.

When she was born, she had many health problems, and we feared that she might never walk.

But today – although she may still need corrective surgery in a year or so – she is as active as any toddler of her age, flying round at a hundred miles an hour. For two OAPs, it was a hugely rewarding, but slightly tiring experience!

World Cup thrills After a drama-free journey back from Dublin last weekend, we got back home in time to tune into one of the best games of the Rugby World Cup. Our Irish team have already given us a tournament to remember, and the victories over South Africa and Scotland in front of thousands of Irish supporters will live forever in our hearts. But for little Portugal to win a first ever World Cup finals game, with a superb performance to beat a fancied Fijian team, was one of the stand-out moments so far. The absolute joy on the faces of the team, the management and their supporters was a thing to behold, and it’s something I will never forget.

As for us, what a game is coming this Saturday – all I can say is thank God my pacemaker got checked last week, as it will probably be well tested by the All Blacks!

Trouble behind scenes at Late Late Show?

Four weeks ago, the new Late Late Show was launched with massive fanfare and excitement. I didn’t watch it live, but I did record it and caught the James McClean interview – although, as I told you afterwards, I managed to avoid having to see the 2 Johnnies.

Anyway, in the meantime, viewing figures have tumbled quite alarmingly.

I couldn’t get the numbers for Friday’s (in my opinion) disappointing Country Music Special, but in general there seems to be a lot of trouble behind the scenes of the new show.

Executive Producer Jane Murphy quit the show last week, allegedly because she found it impossible to continue

– amid (alleged) tensions over the selection of guests and how they were interviewed. It seems that for Patrick Kielty’s first show, CNN superstar and Kerry’s own Donie O’Sullivan was booked to appear… only to be dropped two days before the show and replaced by the 2 Johnnies.

However, by that stage hotel rooms had been booked in Dublin for members of O’Sullivan’s family, O’Sullivan had had to get permission from CNN to appear on the Late Late, and his flights from the US were booked – and, at a cost of “more than four figures”, the price was lost.

The Late Late show team were hor-

rified that such a thing would happen, just as the new RTÉ Director General Kevin Bakhurst announced a recruitment freeze, and more importantly, a freeze on discretionary spending.

Then there was the Carl Frampton interview, during which commentators say he got a very soft ride by Kielty over his fall-out with Barry McGuigan, and over his alleged links to MTK, the boxing firm founded by crime boss Daniel Kinahan.

The upshot of it all is that Ms Murphy felt she had little or no say in any of the important decisions and that she couldn’t do her job. Everyone says she was a very highly thought of Execu-

tive Producer, but whatever the cause of her departure, there is no doubt that Patrick Kielty has had a rough start to his new job as the host of the Late Late.

He might just have to book the 2 Johnnies again for this Friday night to get it all sorted!

Sadly, I will miss it again if he does, as I have to walk the dog, or maybe the cat, but I will have to do something.

However, as the LLS has been a flagship programme for RTÉ for so many years, I would like to see it overcome these problems and get back to the revered status it once had with Irish viewers. I won’t be holding my breath though.

And finally…

We ran into a number of the Keelogues’ Kellys at Martin’s birthday party last weekend. I want to wish him well and say hello to John and Kitsy and Raymond, and especially Melissa, all the way from Oughterard! Happy birthday Martin, you are catching up on me!

Galway and Roscommon ETB take to stage at education conference Cllr Michael Maher (President of the Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI)) was a featured speaker at this year’s ETBI annual education conference in Cork City Hall. David Leahy (Chief Executive at Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board (GRETB)) also contributed as a speaker at the conference.

Speakers were also joined by delegates from Galway and Roscommon ETB at the conference. The theme for this year’s conference ‘The ETB of the Future’ explored key topics such as the role of AI and technology in education, the importance of inclusion and diversity, and what learners want for the class of 2033.

The event brought together over 300 representatives from across the sector and featured a line-up of over 40 speakers. Minister of State at the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Niall Collins TD opened the conference giving the official Ministerial conference address.

Commenting of the future of education, General Secretary of ETBI, Paddy Lavelle said, “As we reflect on ten years of ETBs in Ireland, it’s time for us now to look to the future and focus on what lies ahead for our sector. Ireland is changing, and it’s important that we move to adapt with it. We need to plan ahead and give real thought to who our learners of the future are: what skills do they need; how do they need or want to be taught; and how can we ensure that we are delivering education to learners of all levels in Galway and Roscommon and across the country that meets their needs, and the needs of their future employers?”.

The conference took place over two days, with a full line-up of keynote speakers and panel discussions. Some of the highlights included inputs from Joanne O’Riordan (disability activist, writer and broadcaster), John Lonergan (writer and former governor of Mountjoy Prison), Anna Artemyeva (Head of Google for Education, UK and Ireland), Niall Collins TD (Minister of State with responsibility for Skills and Further Education), and Bernie McNally (Secretary General of the Department of Education).

Budget 2024: Main Points Tax rates and mortgage relief key focuses in Budget 2024 < ALANNAH ITA HEALY

The full details of Budget 2024 were announced in the Dáil by Minister for Finance Michael McGrath and Minister for Public Expenditure Paschal Donohoe on Tuesday afternoon.

The wide range of measures, totalling around €6.5billion, mainly centred around mortgage relief, renters’ supports, and changes to tax rates.

Mortgage holders in Roscommon and nationwide will have their mortgage interest tax relief offered on increased interest payment amounts for 2023, capped at €1,250. Renters’ credits meanwhile have been increased to €750, and the Help to Buy scheme will be extended to the end of 2025. There

will also be a temporary tax relief for small landlords over the next four years.

In terms of tax rates, the lower rate (20%) band for income tax will increase from €40,000 to €42,000, the Universal Social Charge (USC) 4.5% rate will reduce to 4%, and the USC 2% rate band will expand to include income up to €25,760. Personal, PAYE and earned income tax credits will increase by €100 to €1,875.

“At a time when so many farmers across all sectors in agriculture are under huge financial strain, are still not receiving a fair price for their premium produce in many cases, and are facing the challenge of climate change, the Minister has announced a reduced budget for next year, well below last year’s”, she commented.

“This Budget ignores the very many challenges facing farmers and is further evidence that this Government is not listening to farmers”.

The village of Keadue was awarded first place in Co. Roscommon and won their 13th gold medal in Category A at this year’s SuperValu Tidy Towns awards which took place in Croke Park in Dublin recently.

Castlecoote came second in the county and won a silver medal, while Ballintubber

came third in the county and won a bronze medal. Cloontuskert also won a Category A bronze medal.

Tarmonbarry won a bronze medal in Category C and Roscommon Town took home the gold medal in Category E. Categories are based on the population size of each town or village.

National Tidy Towns Award for Williamstown

When the National Tidy Town results were announced on Friday last, the members of Williamstown Heritage Society were greeted with the outstanding news that their application, which was forwarded a few months ago for the new Heritage section in the National Tidy Town Competition and entered under the Williamstown Tidy Towns banner, had won this National Award outright, with a prize of €3,000 going with it.

The thorough and detailed application was based on the development of Templetogher Heritage Area, covering the natural, cultural, and built aspects there.

There was widespread delight and satisfaction throughout the community when news spread of this unique achievement. Needless to say, immense pride has been taken in this wonderful news, which makes the huge local effort put into this project for the past 20 years very much worthwhile.

Boyle Tidy Towns also came second in a special ‘Town Centre First’ category and received €1,500.

Meanwhile, there were celebrations for Rahara too, winner of an Endeavour Award.

Abbeyleix in Co. Laois was named Ireland’s Tidiest Town and Overall winner of Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town.

In a statement issued by their secretary, Cllr. Tom Crosby, Tarmonbarry Tidy Towns noted that Tarmonbarry – winners of a bronze medal – had gained 12 points on last year.

The adjudicators commented that it was a delight to kick off their adjudication for

the national Tidy Towns competition in Tarmonbarry, saying that despite it being a busy bank holiday weekend, the village looked lovely and the efforts over the past twelve months to maintain and enhance the village and plan strategically for the future deserved to be applauded.

Viral Clondalkin protest video a prime example of far-right hypocrisy Let’s talk about ...

FAR-RIGHT HYPOCRISY

The other day, a video came across my feed of an exchange that occurred in Clondalkin recently, as anti-immigration demonstrators protesting against emergency accommodation clashed with counter-protesters from Clondalkin For All. For those who haven’t seen it, the clip depicts an interaction between far-right activist Philip Dwyer and counter-protester Darragh Adelaide. In the video, Dwyer approaches Adelaide, a black Clondalkin native, asking him “Do you want to do an interview young man?”.

Adelaide responds, “An bhfuil Gaeilge agat?” (Do you have/speak Irish?), and continues speaking to him as Gaelige, explaining he’ll only do interviews in the language and asking the far-right activist “Cén fáth atá tú anseo?” (Why are you here?).

Dwyer replies, “Ní thuigim” (I don’t understand).

As Adelaide continues as Gaelige, Dwyer then suggests the Clondalkin native was sent by an NGO, allegedly later asking him repeatedly to tell him what organisation taught him Irish and paid him to attend the protest.

Adelaide, as stated, is a native of Clondalkin, an area well-known for having a vibrant Irishspeaking community. He attended a gaelscoil for his primary and secondary education. In his own words, despite what some far-righters might assume, he has long been “a fluent Irish speaker, and there are many people of colour who speak Irish”.

The clip quickly garnered almost a million views on Twitter/X, with many commenting that the exchange exemplifies the irony and hypocrisy within Ireland’s far-right. It’s a sentiment shared by Adelaide, who commented after the event that it’s “ridiculous” to have someone “who is driven by a love of Ireland... enough to harass” people, somehow not have that love extend to the Irish language.

Because it is ironic, yes, to see Dwyer, a selfproclaimed staunch nationalist, not have the cuplá focail to keep up with a casual exchange as Gaeilge. It’s ironic, yes, that someone protesting against immigration for the sake of keeping Ireland Irish, can’t even understand a simple question in the language. It’s ironic, but as far as making some grand point about the hypocrisy within Ireland’s far-right, which many have suggested this has, I’m not sure how far that take goes.

For the sake of giving a little benefit of the doubt here (which I do in absolutely no defence of Dwyer specifically), I think we’d all admit that knowing or not knowing Irish isn’t the be-all and end-all in determining whether a person is actually as devoted to the country’s betterment as they claim. There are people who care deeply about the country who haven’t any Irish at all, and there are presumably some fluent speakers out there who’re wholly uninvested in the country and its future. Sure, it’s quite funny that for all his grandstanding about being all about Ireland, Dwyer seemingly doesn’t understand any conversational Irish. But it’s not much beyond that.

If the exchange demonstrates far-right hypocrisy in any significant way, I think the more glaring

example would be when Dwyer asks Adelaide if an NGO sent him.

His accusation that some organisation must’ve went out of their way to teach Adelaide Irish and pay him to attend the protest is laughable – and not just because it reads like him panicking to find some angle to undermine Adelaide in a way that reeks of the foundation-less conspiratorial tendencies the far-right is known for. The suggestion that Adelaide was there not for legitimate reasons, but instead for money or as part of some larger political agenda, is so laughable coming from Dwyer, because it is something he himself is much closer to being guilty of.

Unlike Adelaide, Dwyer is not a native or a resident of Clondalkin. Whether or not asylum seekers are provided with emergency accommodation in the area is not going to have any direct effect on him. He is not a part of the community he claims to be protesting in service of, while Adelaide is. In fact, the local community reportedly do not share the views of Dwyer in the slightest – for years, Clondalkin has been home to refugees who have been warmly embraced by the community, and who have been as involved in local events as any other residents.

protest fits a larger trend of him travelling to demonstrations to film videos that spread his rhetoric and misinformation, boost his recognition and interaction – and, of course, make money. His bread and butter is attending these controversial demonstrations, spewing conspiratorial misinformation, and posting it all online to make money from YouTube, Telegram, Subscribestar etc… but counter-protesters are the ones there to distort the truth because they’re getting money to?

Dwyer’s far-right activism is a financially prosperous endeavour for him, and will continue to be for as long as the movement has traction.

And given recent events – not just the anti-immigration demonstrations, but the Dáil protests a few weeks ago – it appears that if anything, Ireland’s far-right is not just retaining traction, but is on the rise.

As to why, while various factors such as online content like Dwyer’s no doubt play a part, it’s also important to note there are legitimate failings in the current system that are prompting more and more people to turn towards the farright. And the more we continue to outrightly dismiss the far-right without properly addressing these failings, the more fodder it gives to people like Dwyer to take valid issues like housing and weaponise people’s exasperation in order to spread hate – and line their own pockets.

Because at the end of the day, as much as prominent far-righters use people’s legitimate gripes to draw them to the movement, they are not actually focused on solving these issues; for all the anti-immigration protests Dwyer has attended this year in the name of Irish people being housed first, it’s a wonder he’s always raising money, not for anti-homelessness or housing initiatives, but for himself.

The reason it is so easy to find examples of far-right hypocrisy in a clip as short as the one of Dwyer and Adelaide’s exchange in Clondalkin, is because Ireland’s far-right is all smoke and mirrors. They make a big noise about being all about XYZ, but if you look into it for more than a second, it all falls apart. They are fiercely nationalistic (unless you ask them to speak as Gaeilge), they care about addressing housing (unless you ask them to consider the issue outside of asylum seekers), and perhaps most of all, they are against manipulation, leaders working in self-interest, and the truth being distorted (unless, of course, they’re the ones doing it).

Naughten calls on Taoiseach to act on challenges for An Garda Síochána Deputy Denis Naughten has called for the direct intervention of An Taoiseach and Government regarding the ongoing challenges faced

by An Garda Síochána. He specifically requested an immediate review of the current Garda Síochána force with the engagement of all stakeholders, to be chaired by An Taoiseach and to make recommendations within twelve weeks.

“The reality is that morale within the force is at an all-time low and

the present action on overtime is leading to anxiety from people in rural communities and for older people, and this cannot be allowed to continue,” stated Denis Naughten.

“This review needs to immediately address declining morale within the force and the issues around retention, the mandatory retirement age of 60 years, recruitment, transfers, rostering, entry-level pay and the need to improve work practices.

“With regard to the rostering issue, this should be independently evaluated with data analysts brought in to look at a solution that will be acceptable to all sides. Such an unbiased analysis of the Garda dispute might be the first step towards mending strained relationships”.

Deputy Naughten continued by pointing out that the increasing number of assaults on Gardaí while on duty must also be addressed.

“We should get tougher on such

crimes and create new legislation to act as a deterrent with mandatory custodial sentences for the criminal action of purposely causing injury to a Garda.

“It is also imperative that there is a baseline per capita Garda manpower figure in each county to ensure that certain areas in the State are not under-policed, particularly for rural counties across the west of Ireland,” concluded Denis Naughten.

Local mothers gather for National Breastfeeding Week

A large group of breastfeeding mothers met last week in The Quad, Roscommon town, to celebrate the HSE National Breastfeeding Week.

This is one of many events being hosted locally and aims to raise awareness on the positive benefits of breastfeeding and associated supports available throughout the county.

Roscommon Breastfeeding support group meets on the second and fourth Thursday of each month in the Quad (F42CH70). Drop in any time between 11.30 am and 1 pm.

Siblings are welcome.

Castlerea Boil Water Notice lifted

A Boil Water Notice on the Castlerea Public Water Supply was lifted last Friday. Uisce Éireann confirmed that, following consultation with the Health Service Executive, customers could resume normal use of the water supply.

The notice, which was issued on the 22nd of September, was put in place to protect the health of customers following disinfection issues at Longford Springs Water Treatment Plant.

Drinking water experts from Uisce Éireann worked to lift the notice as quickly and safely as possible, and following satisfactory water samples, the Boil Water Notice was lifted. Meanwhile, works are progressing to upgrade the water treatment plant.

Uisce Eireann’s Ger Greally acknowledged the impact of the notice on homes and businesses and thanked the community for their support while they worked to lift the notice.

Important meeting in Kilbride on ‘Active Age’

There was an Active Age Group previously running in Kilbride, up until Covid-19, and it was very well attended with various activities taking place. Since Covid, a few members have sadly passed away (RIP). An attempt will now be made to reactivate the group. A meeting with that goal will be held in Fourmilehouse community building on Tuesday, October 17th, at 2.30 pm with a view to reactivating the group for Derrane and Fourmilehouse areas (this meeting was meant to be held last week, but was postponed).

The Community Bus will be available for anyone who hasn’t transport for this meeting (and for all meetings throughout the year).

Ciaran Mullooly, who works with Roscommon LEADER Partnership, will be in attendance, as will members of the Community Alert Group.

This meeting is open to both men and women throughout the parish and surrounding areas. All are welcome.

Murphy hails ‘proud Roscommon man’ Liam Connellan Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has paid tribute to the late Liam Connellan, the former Chairperson of the National Roads Authority and former DG of Ibec, who was a proud Roscommon man. Liam Connellan died on September 26th last, at the age of 87.

While the late Liam Connellan was born in Longford, he grew up in Strokestown and described himself as a “proud Roscommon man”. Indeed he was a keen supporter of Roscommon events locally and in Dublin.

A former Director General of Ibec, he was also the first ever Chairperson of the National Roads Authority, now known as Transport Infrastructure Ireland. Mr. Connellan took up that latter position in 1994.

He also held a number of other very prestigious positions throughout Irish society, including with the Peter McVerry Trust, where he was an active member. He also served as President of the RDS.

Liam Connellan, R.I.P.

Paying tribute to the late Liam Connellan, Senator Murphy described him as an outstanding Roscommon man.

“Liam kept constant contact with Strokestown and was delighted when some years ago we invited him back to be our special guest at our Annual Easter Parade”, said Senator Murphy.

“As first Chairman of the National Roads Authority he worked tirelessly to develop a proper road structure between the provinces and the major cities. He did excellent work in building north/south relations in the business world and his work in that arena is well noted and recognised.

“In later years, Liam travelled quite a lot to Knock Shrine with his

wife (now also deceased), and on most such occasions they would stop off in Strokestown and Liam would always talk about his fondness for the region.

I had kept in contact with him, but in recent years our paths had not crossed”.

Senator Murphy extended his sympathies to the Connellan family, noting that the late Liam Connellan’s “positive contribution to Irish society” will be long remembered.

Liam Connellan, of Foxrock, Dublin and formerly of Strokestown, Co. Roscommon, is mourned by his daughter Rachel, sons Paul, Brendan, Liam and David, siblings Rita, Seamus, Dermot and Mary, further relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Marie, and by his brother, John.

After reposing in Quinn’s Funeral Home, Glasthule, removal took place to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Church, Foxrock. Funeral Mass was followed by burial at Shanganagh Cemetery. May he rest in peace.

IFA Farm Family and Social Affairs Chair Teresa Roche has welcomed the extension of the deadline for applications for the new National Farm Safety Measure to Friday, October 27th, which was recenty announced by Minister Martin Heydon.

To apply for the measure, a farmer or Farm Advisory System (FAS) approved Advisor, must submit an expression of interest before investing in the equipment. It should be noted that when the expression of interest is submitted, written confirmation does not issue by post. Applications for payment (claims) should be submitted on AgFood.ie via the new AgSchemes – Applications for Payment, as soon as possible and no later than Friday, October 27th.

Teresa Roche said she strongly encourages farmers to avail of this National Farm Safety Measure and urges all farmers to

purchase and use farm safety equipment, which will protect people from serious and fatal injuries.

The measure will provide a financial contribution to participating farmers for a maximum of two quad helmets and four PTO shaft covers. The grant-aid will be at a rate of 60% subject to a maximum eligible cost of €100 per PTO shaft cover and €150 per quad bike (ATV) helmet, she explained.

Farmers are reminded that from November 20th, it will be mandatory for all operators of All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs/Quads) to undergo training and to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including a helmet, when using such vehicles for work.

There was a very large entry of stock on offer at last Friday’s Special Bullock Sale with 750 on offer. Bullocks fetched an average of €2.93 per kilo up to €4.16 per kilo. There was larger entry of dry cows and they made an average of €2.08 per kilo up to €2.51 per kilo.

There was also a large entry of top quality weanlings on offer at the Show and Sale held on Tuesday evening last, with a very strong trade for both bulls and heifers. Bull weanlings fetched from an average of €3.29 per kilo up to €5.07 per kilo, while heifer weanlings made from an average of €3.18 per kilo up to €5.53. There was a very good attendance of customers ringside for both sales, with online buyers also active.

Finally, there was a large number of sheep on offer at the weekly sale of lambs and cast ewes. Prices for finished lambs made up to €148. The tops for stag ewes fetched €132. Please note all sheep must be tagged with a full yellow EID tag set.

Government must act urgently on Ash Dieback Review – IFA Following the recent publication of the Review of Support for Farmers Impacted by Ash Dieback report, IFA President Tim Cullinan has said that the Government must urgently deliver a workable scheme that supports and compensates farmers as per the recommendations set out in the report.

In June 2023, on the eve of the IFA Farm Forestry conference, Minister Hackett

announced the establishment of an independent review of the Ash dieback support scheme. The group was tasked with reviewing the existing supports in place for landowners affected by Ash Dieback in grant-aided plantations.

Since 1990, approximately 17,000ha were planted, predominantly by farmers, which was grant aided by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Ma-

rine under the afforestation scheme.

“While we are reviewing the full report, the central conclusion here is that the current scheme is flawed and that farmers must be compensated for the losses they have suffered through no fault of their own,” Tim Cullinan said. “Farmers with ash dieback have been waiting too long, the time for talking is well and truly over.

Launch of inaugural all-island programme for female founders Network Ireland and Women in Business have launched a new programme aimed at bringing women entrepreneurs together and opening up connections across the island of Ireland. Applications are now open for the Grow It All-Island Programme, which is the first of its kind in the business community here, and offers 15 places in the Republic of Ireland and 15 places in Northern Ireland.

The scheme is open to members of the two organisations, which offer support to thousands of women across the country, whether they are running a start-up or an established business. The Grow It All-Island Programme is funded by the InterTrade Ireland Synergy Fund and supported by the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Programme.

The new initiative is aimed at female business owners with an interest in developing their market on both sides of the border as well as those who would like to achieve growth and would benefit from direction, clarity, structure and focus. Delivered over six months, the programme includes masterclasses, in-person events, a number of retreats – including a two-day residential in Killeavy Castle in Newry – and one-to-one business coaching meetings.

CIPD event in TUS Athlone The Midlands Region of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) recently hosted their first event of the 2023/2024 Programme entitled ‘How is AI transforming today’s businesses?’ in TUS Athlone.

Following a networking opportunity for attendees, there was an introduction from Caroline Macklin, Vice Chairperson of the CIPD Midlands Committee. Caroline introduced the facilitator for the evening, Dr. Johanna Archbold, Head Librarian, TUS Athlone who opened the debate with a lively discussion from the panellists including Eoghan Kenny, Compliance Expert & Entrepreneur, Niall Murray, Senior Lecturer and Researcher at TUS Athlone and Joan Mulvihill, Digitalisation and Sustainability Lead at Siemens.

On Halloween Night 2023, at 8 pm, Hunters Moon will host a Halloween spooktacular screening of Dead Meat, the Irish zombie film made in Leitrim and North Roscommon in 2003. Almost 20 years after its release, The Dock in Carrick-on-Shannon is delighted to screen this exciting, local film.

The film is billed in the following mouthwatering terms: “An outbreak of a mutant strain of mad cow disease infects the Irish countryside, turning people into ravenous, flesh-eating zombies. Caught amid this chaos is a young Spanish tourist and the local gravedigger. Together, this unlikely duo must fight for survival”.

The film is 87 minutes in duration and is limited to over 18s. Admission is €6.

The screening will include a Q&A with the Director Conor McMahon plus special appearances by some of the local extras – who may appear living or as the living dead!

See Eleanor Shanley and Mike Hanrahan Concert in Creggs Eleanor Shanley and Mike Hanrahan will play a concert in Creggs on Sunday, 29th of October as part of Creggs Harvest Festival.

This follows a series of successful concerts in Creggs in recent months, including by Ultan Conlon, Colm Naughton and Orlaith Keane. The Sunday night concert takes place in the intimate surroundings of Creggs Historical Centre with doors opening at 8 pm and the show starting at 8.30 pm. There will be two 45-minute sets with a short interval.

With a career spanning over 20 years, Eleanor Shanley is one of the​most-loved singers in folk music. Whether as a soloist, or collaborating with De Danann, or during her time collaborating

with the late Ronnie Drew, her distinctive voice is full of natural lyrical emotion.

Eleanor has been at the top of her profession since her first appearance with De Danann in 1990. She has worked with many great musicians, including Christy Moore, and also recorded with The Dubliners, Sharon Shannon, Donal Lunny, U2 and Ronnie Drew, with whom she recorded two albums.

In Creggs, she will perform with Clare native, Mike Hanrahan, whose professional career began in 1977 when he started performing with Maura O’Connell in a duo called Tumbleweed.

In 1979 he worked with Stockton’s Wing on their ‘Take a

Chance’ album, the title of which was taken from one of Mike’s songs.

The 1980s saw him perform throughout Europe and beyond with Stockton’s Wing. He left Stockton’s Wing in 1994 and pursued a solo tour, including in the UK with Finbar Furey.

The night in Creggs promises to be a memorable performance of Ireland’s finest folk expression as these two noted musicians come together in the village venue for a very special performance.

Tickets, priced at €20, are on sale in Roarke’s Spar in Creggs.

The event is organised as part of Creggs Harvest Festival with thanks to the support of Kilbegnet Historical Society and Galway County Council.

On Thursday, the 19th of October, multi-instrumentalist John Wynne will lead a series of what are known as ‘Slow Sessions’ for musicians starting off or picking an instrument back up. This will take place in Roscommon Arts Centre between 6.15 pm and 7.45 pm, with tickets costing €10.

These sessions are for players of any instrument and at any level. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. A selection of easy and well-known session tunes will be played slowly so that people in the early stages of their playing, or those coming back to playing music, have the opportunity to play together in a friendly, supportive and informal context.

More experienced players who wish to refine their techniques and extend their repertoire at a slower pace are also very welcome to ‘pull up a chair and play’. Set-lists will be made available in advance to participants. Tickets can be booked via box office on 090 662 5824.

We thank Enda McHugh Undertaker for his professionalism in conducting the Funeral arrangements, to those who prepared Marina’s final resting place, a sincere thank you. A special thank you to Dr. Michelle Culligan and all the medical staff of Monksland Primary Care Centre for all the kindness and professional care shown through Marina’s illness.

A sincere thank you to all the staff at Portiuncula Hospital Ballinasloe, UCHG Galway and to Clarinbridge Care Centre for all the care and attention given to Marina. To all the Carers, Personal Assistants, especially those who formed the Guard of Honour, to Monksland Pharmacy, the Irish Wheelchair Association, Roscommon Disability Support Group, Family Carers Ireland, Bluebird Healthcare Group, to the two taxi drivers, Billy and Liam and to the two RSG drivers Tommy and Sean, to all those, a very sincere thank you.

Dolores wished to be cared for at home, thank you to the lovely carers and also to the Palliative Care Nurses, District Nurses Ann Marie and Mary. Also to Dr. John Keenan, Dr. Thomas Donegan and their medical staff for their great service, and also our heavy team – thank you to David, Seamus, Derek, James and Brian.

Not forgetting the Gardai for their prompt attention to slow the traffic with their blue lights.

Sincere thanks to our neighbouring ladies Ann, Bridie, Christine, Margaret, Orla, also Dolores’ sisters, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and son David. Thanks also to my own family Neil, Carolann, Rosemary, grandchildren and great grandchildren for coming over from England.

Boyle and Clann seek senior honours as LGFA finals take centre stage This weekend the LGFA is hosting its adult finals, with Boyle and Clann na nGael vying for senior honours in what is quite a unique final pairing.

The Roscommon LGFA looks forward to seeing large crowds attending to support the teams in the various finals, with high expectations of some brilliant football for everyone to enjoy.

The finals will be held over two venues on Saturday. St Croan’s will host the Junior A final between Michael Glavey’s and Northern Harps (12.45 pm), and also the Intermediate final between St Ciaran’s and Éire Óg (2.45 pm).

In Ballyforan meanwhile, the Junior B final between Oran and Padraig Pearses will throw in at 3 pm. That game will be followed by the senior final between Clann and Boyle, which begins at 5 pm.

Senior final

The Junior A Final between Michael Glavey’s and Northern Harps promises to be a tight encounter which could well go down to the final whistle.

Oran and Padraig Pearses, who meet in the Junior B final, played one another in the round robin phase, and there was only a couple of points between them. It suggests that another close encounter is likely this Saturday.

The Junior C final between Roscommon Gaels and St Dominic’s last Friday night (in Lisnamult) was a cracker of a game which fittingly ended in a draw. No date has yet been set for the replay, which is eagerly awaited.

This year the senior competition has been wide open. Few if any observers have felt confident enough to predict who would make the final, let alone choose a title winner.

In last weekend’s Abbey Hotel Senior Ladies’ FC semi-finals, Clann hit seven goals in a comprehensive win over St Dominic’s (7-14 to 0-10). Caoimhe Lennon was the star player, contributing 3-4, but this was a fine team performance.

Arsenal ‘gunning’ for City – and the title!

Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday is a good result for football. A close title race in the Premier League is what most football fans want.

The Gunners have been impressive this season, in that they have carried on – more or less – where they left in the previous thrilling campaign, answering critics who might (reasonably) have wondered if last season’s form was a ‘flash in the pan’. On the contrary, Mikel Arteta appears to be the real deal, and is developing Arsenal into a major force again. The fact that they won on Sunday without the brilliant (currently injured) Bukayo Saka also points to encouraging squad depth.

While Manchester City have to endure the embarrassment of not being top of the league during the international break, buoyant Arsenal will have ruefully noted that their great London rivals, Spurs, are sitting pretty at the top alongside the Gunners. Tottenham Hotspur have made a great start to life in a post-Harry (Kane) world.

Liverpool look strong again, and could even compete with City and Arsenal for the title. Newcastle have re-

covered from a slow start and are now on a great run. I’m delighted too to see David Moyes and West Ham going well again in the league. Confidence is clearly soaring for the Hammers after their great Europa Conference title win flipped their fortunes a while back.

As for Manchester United, they are clearly in disarray. Erik ten Hag’s team ‘got out of jail’ last Saturday, two goals in extra-time by sub Scott McTominay turning defeat into victory. That timely double may settle the Old Trafford Club and propel them up the table. But on all the early evidence of this new Premier League season, United are a disjointed mess, and a long way from convincing most (or all?) observers that they can soon be considered serious challengers for honours.

Breathtaking St Brigid’s If there was an award for ‘Performance of the Week’ on the GAA club front last weekend – and there wasn’t – all interested hopefuls would probably have had the good grace to form an orderly queue behind St. Brigid’s.

While it was a weekend of many notable successes, the most breathtaking display came from the big guns in the senior ranks, the ever-formidable St Brigid’s.

St Brigid’s blitzed Roscommon Gaels in Saturday’s semi-final, with an imposing display of quality, attacking football.

Devastating in attack they certainly are, but the reality is that St Brigid’s are extremely strong in all departments. This was sublime football.

Sunday’s semi-final was more of a war of attrition, won in the end by Boyle, now into their second final in a row.

St Brigid’s will be raging hot favourites to win the final, but that will suit Boyle.

We’ll look forward to the big game (and other upcoming county finals too) next week and in upcoming issues.

Rossies roar … in Paris We’re happy to report that a considerable number of people from this region took flight last week and joined the many thousands of fellow Irish supporters attending the big Rugby World Cup showdown with Scotland.

Ireland were obviously favourites going into the game, but the prospect of an upset could not be ruled out.

As it turned out, Ireland produced a magnificent display, befitting their current status as number 1 team in the world.

Key to their easy victory was a phenomenal defensive performance, as the Scottish attack – normally very dangerous – was rendered impotent time and time again. At the other end, Ireland were clinical.

The focus now switches to this Saturday, and a monumental fixture against New Zealand for a place in the World Cup semi-final. Ireland have been magnificent so far. Hopefully they can maintain their fantastic momentum and take a massive step towards the final.

THE GAIN LINE

Creggs RFC narrowly lose out in the Junior Cup Creggs J1A team narrowly lost 27-26 to Newcastle West in their All-Ireland Junior Cup game last Saturday in Limerick.

The home team opened the scoring with a penalty after three minutes but Creggs responded well and, after a series of successful attacks, found themselves 20 points to 13 ahead at the break. The second half saw two early tries by the home team, putting them ahead 27-20 with ten minutes left.

However, Creggs refused to give up, and two penalties from Ronan Dowd left one point between the sides as the final whistle blew.

Creggs will look back on this game as one that should have ended in a victory for them but must now look ahead to this weekend and the start of the Connacht Junior League away to Dunmore on Saturday, October 14th (with a 5 pm kickoff).

Creggs Men’s Seconds: The Creggs second team start their season next Sunday, the 15th October, at home to Ballina.

Girls U-18s: Creggs U-18s girls travelled to Claremorris last Sunday to play the Claremorris Colts in the first round of the league and came away with a comprehensive 62-10 victory.

Boys U-15s: Last Saturday, Creggs U-15s boys travelled to Sligo for round three of the league.

After a dominant first-half performance Creggs were 21-7 ahead but Sligo came out fighting in the second half, winning the match by five points. Final score: Creggs 21 Sligo 26.

Boys U-16s: The Creggs U-16s Boys played Buccaneers on The Green in Creggs last Sunday. It was a tense and cagey game which ended 15-7 in favour of Creggs. Their next game is on Sunday away to Sligo.

Boys U-17s: Creggs U-17s had a difficult start to their league campaign when they travelled to Dubarry Park to take on Buccaneers. The home team won the game by a substantial margin but the Creggs team aim to bounce back stronger in the coming weeks.

Mini-Rugby: The Connacht Aviva Rugby blitz takes place in Creggs this Saturday morning at 10 am for Boys U-10 and Girls U-12 and clubs from all over Connacht will attend. The regular Saturday morning training for the Minis takes place on Sunday morning at 10 am instead.

LGFA hit by resignations as manager saga rumbles on < PAUL HEALY

A serious breakdown in trust between Roscommon LGFA and the current intermediate playing panel has been confirmed as the fallout from the apparently botched handling of the outgoing team management’s status rumbles on.

The Roscommon People understands that there have been a number of resignations at administrative level ‘behind the scenes’ – directly arising from huge disquiet over the saga.

The crisis arose last month due to the controversial manner in which time was called on the tenure of the county’s intermediate football ladies’ team management.

Last weekend, after unsuccessful behind the scenes efforts to bring some resolution to the matter, the current players went public and issued a statement to the media, in which they backed the outgoing management.

In the statement, the players insist that a decision made about the fate of the management was based on incorrect information. The players say that 17 members of the current panel were not consulted as part of any internal season review. Expressing their disappointment at how the matter has been handled, the players reject any suggestion that a majority of them were unhappy with management – and are calling on Roscommon LGFA to apologise to the outgoing management team.

Background A meeting of Roscommon LGFA executive was held on Monday, 4th of September. Then-manager Ollie Lennon and his management colleagues later claimed the meeting was told that up to 15 players on the current panel were not prepared to continue playing if the outgoing management remained in place. At the meeting, a decision was taken to part ways with Lennon and his management team. This move followed a recommendation to that effect

from the Roscommon LGFA Development Committee.

In the aftermath of the meeting, Ollie Lennon and his management team – Tom Lennon, Brian Lennon and John Kennedy – responded by making it clear to the media that they rejected the suggestion that a comprehensive review had been conducted with players.

The outgoing management team said they were “extremely disappointed” at the decision of the Roscommon LGFA executive to “remove us”.

The outgoing management said at the time: “Following a recommendation from the Roscommon LGFA Development committee who undertook a review of our two years at the helm, it is our understanding that it was stated very clearly… that one of the reasons why we should not be offered a third year in charge was because up to 15 players had indicated that they wouldn’t return to the panel if we stayed on.

“Following our own internal review… we have every reason to believe that this was not the case and that the vast majority of players on the current panel were never consulted during the review, including our captain and vice-captain”.

Now the players have emphatically backed that stance, stating last weekend: “The vast majority of our 27 players including the captain and vicecaptain were not contacted at all… we feel very let down and disappointed to be treated in such a manner. We have been misrepresented and treated incorrectly. It is simply not acceptable”.

The Roscommon People understands that a number of members of the LGFA Development Committee have resigned due to their misgivings about how this matter has been dealt with. There are reports too that a leading member of Roscommon LGFA executive has also resigned.

The Roscommon People invited Roscommon LGFA to issue a statement in response to the players’ statement. In response, the LGFA said “Roscommon LGFA will not be commenting on this matter at this time”.

Statement issued by Roscommon players In their statement, the Roscommon players say: “As players we are extremely disappointed by the incorrect information that was given about our views on the current season/management team.

“Following an internal review, it is very clear that 17 players from the current panel were not contacted or surveyed to give any feedback on our season in any form. The vast majority of our 27 players including the captain and vicecaptain were not contacted at all.

“We want to make it very clear that from the 27 players on our panel 17 were not contacted and 15 did not say that they would not return under Ollie (Lennon, outgoing manager) and his management team”.

C’mon The Town

The players added: “We feel very let down and disappointed to be treated in such a manner. We have been misrepresented and treated incorrectly. It is simply not acceptable”.

The players went on to say that they have asked Roscommon LGFA to contact Ollie Lennon and his management team to clarify that this information was incorrect, adding that “this has not been done”.

They concluded: “We feel we have done our part as players as the issue must be sorted internally. Our priority is that an apology is given to the management team regarding this misinformation. We once again ask for this to be given”.

(Roscommon Town Youth Soccer)

On the pitch On Monday night, our boys U-14s team played Dunmore in the Premier Division title play-off final under the lights in Lecarrow.

The Roscommon team were hoping to seal league honours but it was not to be. Dunmore were the sharper side in the first half and scored the only goal of the game after ten minutes.

Town upped their game in the second half but were not able to convert. A disappointing end to a good year. Thanks to Barry and Mick for managing the team this season.

On Sunday, it’s the turn of the U-11s to show what they can do. The girls Champions League side play St John’s and in the boys section, Town 2 Europa League play Cloonfad, while Town 2 Champions League face Ballaghaderreen.

In the Divisional Cup semi-final first legs, our Town 1 U-12s boys team defeated Glen Celtic while Town 2 lost to Cloonfad United.

Our boys U-16s team play this evening (Thursday) and have to overcome Castlerea to reach the final. Our U-16s girls team play their semi-final first leg on Sunday evening when they welcome Glen Celtic.

Éire Óg stay on course for new title bid Callington Ltd Roscommon IFC semi-final Éire Óg 2-8 Elphin 1-8 Last year’s beaten finalists Éire Óg are back in the Roscommon IFC final after an impressive win against Elphin in Strokestown on Saturday.

In tight early exchanges, the Loughglynn club had an edge, moving 0-3 to 0-1 in front. With scores hard to come by, a goal was a precious aspiration. When Elphin struck in the 26th minute – Niall Higgins netting a penalty – it was a vital boost to their chances.

Liam Creaton ensured honours were even at the break, equalising in style to leave the half-time

score: Éire Óg 0-4 Elphin 1-1.

Elphin looked set to drive on to victory as a tense game progressed. Points from Aaron Brady (two frees) and Fintan Cregg saw Elphin move three clear by the third quarter. It looked ominous for Éire Óg.

Then, just when they badly needed a three-pointer, Liam Creaton delivered as so often in the past. His 42nd minute goal brought Éire Óg right back into the contest. From there to the finish it was a fiercely contested game.

After Fintan Cregg and Conor Cox had exchanged points, Cregg struck again to put Elphin one up. Éire Óg then pounced for another crucial goal. This time James McGreal was on hand to finish to the net, and suddenly

Pat Doorey’s men were ahead with just seven minutes to go.

As the tension mounted, and with just five minutes remaining, Éire Óg’s Conor Cox was shown a straight red card after an incident with Niall Higgins.

Cregg responded with two scores for Elphin, to level the game. Although down a man, it was Éire Óg who finished strongest, and late points from Liam Creaton (two) and Colm Lavin (a free) saw them home by three (2-8 to 1-8). It was a most impressive victory in the circumstances.

This was a truly great win for Éire Óg, although the prospect of perhaps being without talisman Cox in the final is not a pleasant one (an appeal against the red card is inevitable).

Castlerea’s great escape stuns Pearses Callington Ltd Roscommon IFC semi-final Castlerea St Kevin’s 2-8 Padraig Pearses 1-6 < SEAMUS MORRIS

Castlerea advanced to the Intermediate Football Championship final by defeating Padraig Pearses after extra-time in Knockcroghery on Saturday last.

This Castlerea win was secured by a remarkable comeback. With

just three minutes of normal time remaining, Pearses led by 1-5 to 0-3. However, Castlerea scored 1-2 in the closing stages to force the game into extra-time. They then dominated the additional 20 minutes of football. Pearses’ second string were left reeling, and a jubilant Castlerea marched into the decider.

Until the closing stages of normal time, this had been a poor game, but Castlerea’s comeback elevated the contest greatly.

ing 0-4 to 0-0 at the break. Pearses looked set to make the final until that late Castlerea Houdini Act. First, a goal from substitute Ronan Curran in second-half injury-time was followed by a point from another sub, Niall Connaughton, dramatically taking the game to extra-time.

Pearses could only manage a single point (from a free) in that extra-time period.

The first half was dour viewing and Castlerea must have been immensely frustrated not to record a single score, instead hitting eight wides.

Pearses had the upperhand in midfield and Adam McGreal was a livewire in attack. They opened their account with a point from Conor Lohan in the 9th minute. Adam McGreal added a second point in the 10th minute and Emmet Kelly fired over a ’45 a minute later.

Pearses were denied a goal when a shot from Shane Downey was saved by opposing ‘keeper David Farrell in the 14th minute.

Castlerea had a strong spell of possession, but it amounted to nothing. The wides mounted up for them. By contrast, Pearses

only hit one wide in the first period. They made it 0-4 to 0-0 with a score from Aaron Feehily in the 30th minute.

Straight from the throw-in at the start of the second half, Adam McDermott fired over Castlerea’s first point and his side’s relief was palpable.

However, Pearses responded with their only goal of the game.

Conor Lohan’s initial shot was blocked, but the ball broke to Adam McGreal, who finished to the net.

Adam McDermott scored Castlerea’s second point from a mark in the 39th minute. McDermott was then fouled in the 47th minute and he fired over the free.

Pearses were denied a second goal when a shot from Charles Nevin was saved by David Farrell in the 49th minute. However, Nevin found the range in the 52nd minute to increase Pearses’ lead to 1-5 to 0-3.

For the Woodmount club, it now appeared to be simply a matter of seeing the game out.

However, Castlerea had other ideas, and a point from Shane Keenan in the 57th minute chipped at Pearses’ lead.

Castlerea were awarded a ’45 two minutes into injury-time.

When goalkeeper David Farrell’s kick dropped short, Ronan Curran finished to the net to leave just a point between the sides. Niall Connaughton’s point then ensured extra-time.

A revitalised Castlerea stamped their authority early on, with a point from Adam McDermott being followed by a David Quinn goal, the latter after a well-worked move.

Pearses had no answer in extratime and their change in fortunes continued when David Whelan received a black card for pulling down Adam McDermott in the closing stages.

Clann and St Michael’s to face off in Junior final Clann na nGael and St Michael’s will contest this year’s Dermot Hughes Cars JFC ‘A’ final following last weekend’s semi-final action.

Clann were very impressive as they ran up a score of 5-15 against St Ronan’s (2-7). On the evidence of this sparkling performance, Clann, who were relegated from the intermediate ranks last year, will take a lot of beating in the final.

Clann led by 2-7 to 1-4 at half-time and were dominant throughout the second half, with Tomas O’Neill scoring 1-7 in total on the day.

Championship favourites St Michael’s came good in the second half to overcome Kilglass Gaels in Elphin, thus qualifying for their first county junior final in 30 years.

Kilglass were the better team in the opening half and they deserved their half-time lead of 0-8 to 0-4. However, goals from Jack Lane and Fiachra Henry saw the Cootehall men take over in the second half and they went on to win by 2-7 to 0-9.

St Michael’s will now face Clann na nGael in what promises to be a fascinating final, to be played on Saturday, October 28th.

Brilliant Brigid’s strut into final!

Three goals in eight minutes crushed Gaels Hodson Bay Hotel Roscommon SFC semi-final St Brigid’s 4-15 Roscommon Gaels 0-12 < SEAMUS DUKE

In the run-up to this semi-final there are those who were of the opinion that St Brigid’s had not yet been tested and that Roscommon Gaels would provide them with a very stern examination. That theory was blown out of the water as Brigid’s showed last Saturday why they are the hot favourites to reclaim the Fahey Cup in 2023 with a superb display of attacking, enterprising and open football throughout this one-sided semi-final.

Roscommon Gaels simply couldn’t cope as Brigid’s drove forward relentlessly, their quicksilver forwards easily finding space in the opposition rearguard. Some of the St Brigid’s scores were a joy to watch, and in truth the game was over as a contest at half-time, by which stage the favourites led 3-7 to 0-5.

On a perfect day weather-wise, and on a superb surface at Dr Hyde Park, St Brigid’s were always on top. Shane Cunnane and Eddie Nolan were winning the midfield battle, and by the 12th minute they led by 0-4 to 0-1, with Ben O’Carroll already showing his class with two points (one a free).

Peter Gillooly whipped over a smart point for the town side to narrow the gap in the 16th minute, but after that

Brigid’s took over completely and they sliced open the Gaels defence at will.

Three goals in an eight-minute spell finished the game as a contest.

In the 19th minute, Eddie Nolan crashed the ball home after a brilliant pass from O’Carroll. Two minutes later Ronan Stack galloped forward to blast home another great team score, then in the 27th minute Nolan returned the favour, putting Ben O’Carroll through.

He made no mistake from close-range.

The Gaels replied with two points in injury-time at the end of the half – through Mark Nally and a Mark Purcell ’45 – but even at that stage it was damage limitation. The Gaels’ cause wasn’t helped by a black card shown to Mark Nally (a sub for Paddy Fannon) in the second minute of injury-time, which reduced them to 14 men for the opening period of the second half.

The Gaels were somewhat better on the resumption but the game was over as a contest, and Brigid’s continued to find gaps in their rearguard when they needed to. Brigid’s’ fourth goal arrived in the 50th minute after a barnstorming run from Brian Stack put Ben O’Carroll through. He finished with aplomb.

Both sides ran their respective benches as the game petered out, and it was notable that three of the Brigid’s subs scored from play. The Kiltoom side have a very formidable overall panel and it’s another indication of their strength.

Cormac Sheehy was very impressive between the posts for Brigid’s and his kickouts were excellent. Brian Stack, Pearse Frost and Ronan Stack were outstanding in defence, while Eddie Nolan and Shane Cunnane ruled the roost at midfield.

Up front, Ben O’Carroll was superb, while Paul McGrath, Ruaidhrí Fallon and Conor Hand were not far behind. It was a treat to watch St Brigid’s in full flow last Saturday as they played some

best player by a distance, while John McManus and Senan Lambe were also prominent at times – but the town team could have no complaints on the day.

All the predictions about this Roscommon SFC semi-final were that it was going to go down to the wire, and at least that much was right. But for the neutral, it was a game to forget in terms of quality and excitement. In the end it was Boyle who squeezed through to their second final in a row, after a ferocious tussle against a Pearses side who will feel this week that they left victory behind them.

In truth this was a poor game of football, as both sides made possession of the ball their priority, and in perfect conditions in Dr Hyde Park the goodsized crowd witnessed a lot of horizontal and backwards passing, with the fear of making a mistake uppermost in the minds of the players.

With less than 90 seconds on the clock, Boyle made a blistering start. A superb team move ended with Donie Smith putting Cian McKeon through. He made no mistake, netting from closerange. It was to prove a crucial score.

After that goal, the play was cagey and very defensive from both sides. Turnovers were frequent, but both teams were very weak in attack as players retreated into defence. Pearses’ first point came in the 18th minute, from Jack Tumulty. A minute later McKeon popped up with a point from play for Boyle.

Pearses produced a fine team score from Lorcan Daly in the 23rd minute, but enterprising football was at a premium. It was 1-1 to 0-2 as we entered firsthalf injury-time. Daire Cregg pointed

probably the best score of the game in the 33rd minute. A minute later, Eoin Colleran converted a Pearses free. The sides went in at half-time with Boyle leading by 1-2 to 0-3.

The teams maintained their cautious approach in the second half, with scores difficult to come by. Pearses had more of the play in the third quarter, but more often than not when they had a scoring chance they were wasteful. Boyle were always in the hunt.

Pearses were dealt a blow when Jack Downey was shown a black card in the 42nd minute, but Boyle didn’t capitalise on their numerical advantage.

Points from Cathal Feeley and Roch Hanmore (a mark) kept the scoreboard ticking over from Boyle’s point of view, but pointed frees from Eoin Colleran and Paul Carey saw the sides locked together at 1-5 to 0-8 with nine minutes to go.

Eoin Colleran’s free in the 54th minute put Pearses ahead for the first time in the game. However, Boyle were not to be denied. Enda Smith, Killian Cox, Cathal Feeley and Luke Glennon drove them forward – and the pressure finally told.

In the 56th minute Donie Smith converted a close-range free to level the scores. Then, with less than two minutes to go, Donie was on target again to edge his side back in front with fulltime now looming.

Pearses came back strongly in search of a late equaliser – and they had a couple of chances. The Boyle defence was living a charmed life in those final minutes, but they hung on.

Cian McKeon all stood out for the winners, but they won’t need me to tell them that a repeat performance will not see the Fahey Cup coming to Boyle this winter. Still, semi-finals are for winning, and as far as manager Cian Smith and his players are concerned they have achieved that and can now focus on the final hurdle.

As for Pearses, they will look back on this as an opportunity missed. They were far too tentative in possession, and too reliant on frees for their scores (seven out of nine). For them, Davy Murray, Declan Kenny, Conor Daly and Jack Tumulty were most prominent, but in truth it was a disappointing day for the 2021 Connacht Club champions.
