Cycle to Work Scheme

Once the current level 5 restrictions lift, I hope to start cycling to work. I understand that a cycle to work scheme was introduced in recent years whereby employers could assist employees in the purchase of a bicycle.

Is this correct? I would appreciate your advice.

The Cycle to Work Scheme is a tax incentive scheme which aims to encourage employees to cycle to and from work. Under the scheme employers can pay for bicycles and bicycle equipment for their employees and the employee then repays the employer through a salary sacrifice arrangement of up to 12 months. The employee is not obliged to pay any tax, PRSI or the Universal Social Charge on the repayments.

The scheme applies to new bicycles, bicycle helmets, lights, mirrors, locks and chains, pumps, puncture repair kits, reflective clothing and other cycling paraphernalia.

Generally, the employee will select the bicycle and equipment themselves, up to a limit of €1,250 (€1500 in the case of pedelecs or ebikes) and the bicycle shop will invoice the employer directly for the cost. The tax exemption only applies if the employer pays for the bicycle, it does not apply if the employee pays for the bicycle and is subsequently reimbursed by the employer.

The employee then repays their employer with deductions made from their gross salary. Employers may also buy the bicycle and equipment and not require employees to refund them.

The bicycle must be used in whole or in part for travel between an employee’s home and normal place of work.

Employers are not obliged to participate in the scheme. In the event that an employer does agree to participate they must offer the scheme to all their employees and not just a select few.

Then I got to the last place in town. There was a long, forlorn looking shelf…at first I thought it was empty…then I saw a single loaf!

And? I raced past her and dived on the last loaf, spinning in mid-air and landing on my feet with the bread hoisted above me like a rugby player who had just touched down…

And you graciously handed it to her?

PLEASE TELL ME YOU GAVE HER THE BREAD! No, I kept it! Actually I didn’t. I gave it to her. And to be fair, I made most of that

A dog which had been missing for two weeks in the snowy Wicklow Mountains was found safe and well. Making this story all the more heart-warming is the fact that the dog was discovered by two hikers…both of them doctors who have been working on the frontline during the Covid-19 pandemic!

What we didn’t like…

Well, we certainly liked the Ireland rugby team’s spirited attempt to defeat Wales while playing most of the game with a man less…but we didn’t like the normally magnificent Peter O’Mahony’s poor judgement and reckless tackle… which led to that match-defining red card.

County’s Covid numbers remain low TD calls for clarity on vaccines < DAN DOONER

There were less than five new cases of Covid-19 confirmed in County Roscommon yesterday evening, meaning that the county’s 14-day incidence rate of 131.7 remains the lowest in the country.

Nationally, there were sadly 54 further deaths and 1,006 new cases of the disease. 45 of those deaths have occurred this month while five occurred in January and four remain under investigation.

As of 8 am yesterday (Wednesday), there were 1,032 people hospitalised with Covid-19, 173 of whom are in intensive care

units. There had been 40 additional hospitalisations in the previous 24 hours.

Yesterday it was reported that the number of people in hospital in Ireland with Covid-19 remains three times higher than at the peak of the second wave in October.

The HSE had previously reported that it carried out 341 tests in Roscommon last week and that cases in the county have continued to fall.

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has called for more clarity around the administration of Covid-19 vaccines.

As of Sunday, February 7th, there had been 240,487 doses of Covid-19 vaccine administered in Ireland, with 153,654 people receiving their first dose and 86,833 receiving their second.

Deputy Kerrane: “Given that those aged 70 and over will not now receive the Aztra-Zeneca vaccine, that vaccine will be

given to those further down the priority list, or as it’s known the allocation groups.

“One such group is key workers yet, we still do not know who these are and the HSE have confirmed that this list is not refined yet.

“This makes no sense. We have SNAs in schools and early years educators in crèches getting in touch asking if they are in this group and we, as public representatives cannot answer them.

We need to see a list of who exactly these workers are.

“We have also had a number of calls from family carers asking where they are in the allocation group and again, we cannot tell them as we do not know and I’m not sure the HSE know themselves.

“The rollout of the vaccinations was never going to be perfect, we all know that, but we need clarity on where people fit in relation to the Allocation Groups”.

Local Vintners’ Chair welcomes landmark ruling < DAN DOONER

The Chairperson of the Roscommon branch of the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland has welcomed last Friday’s landmark decision in favour of four pubs in a case taken against FBD Insurance regarding the interruption of business due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Larry Brennan, who runs ‘Down The Hatch’ in Roscommon town, said the High Court ruling in favour of the four, including Seán’s Bar in Athlone, could be a lifeline for some businesses.

“The decision is widely welcomed by publicans but not all had the interruption to business clause in their insurance policies.

“Most publicans never claim anyway and yet insurance costs have continued to spiral over the last number of years.

“Some publicans had paid extra to have the ‘interruption to business’ clause installed and there was huge disappointment when they went to claim and insurance companies refused to pay in unison.

“The reason for this refusal was that the clause didn’t cover the pandemic when in fact it covers a number of reasons including disease,” he said.

Mr. Brennan said that it was very disappointing that it took a High Court ruling to see justice served but that the ruling may prove the difference between some pubs reopening or closing their doors permanently.

“Those who had paid extra for the clause were entitled to claim for lost earnings. If the Government’s decision to close pubs en masse due to a pandemic is not covered then what is?”

On foot of the judgement, a new campaign called ‘Save Irish Pubs’

(www.saveirishpubs.ie) has been launched in order to support publicans in their claims against the insurance company.

Yellow snow and ice warning for Roscommon < DAN DOONER

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow Snow and Ice warning for Roscommon, which comes into effect this morning (Thursday) from 8 am.

Rain, sleet and snow is expected to arrive from the south of the country during the afternoon and extend across Connacht during the rest of the afternoon and evening, with snow accumulations leading to hazardous conditions.

It will be windy and very cold with

highest temperatures of 1 to 3 degrees, with an added wind-chill factor due to fresh to strong southeasterly winds.

Following the Status Yellow warning, the Road Safety Authority has advised all road users to take extra care for the remainder of the week.

Snow accumulations of up to 5cm are expected to make driving conditions extremely dangerous in some places and road users are urged to check local traffic and weather conditions before setting out on any es-

sential journeys.

The RSA advises drivers to remove all snow from vehicles prior to travel, clear windows and mirrors, reduce speed in snow and icy conditions, and leave extra distance between your vehicle and the car in front.

Pedestrians are advised to wear high visibility clothing and appropriate footwear and to take care using footpaths.

With Bord na Móna’s recent announcement that the traditional peat briquette is to be no more, there has been dismay amongst fuel customers locally, across the Republic of Ireland and, indeed, on the other side of the border in Northern counties.

The news came as a shock to many, as they have been using the briquette for both igniting their fire and as a heat source for decades and some were not aware of the plans to cease harvesting of peat on our bogs so suddenly. Bord na Móna have stated that they have some stock which should last until approx. 2024.

“Bord na Móna have been an extremely good employer in the Midlands over the years and whole communities are steeped in the tradition of entire families working for the company in one form or another,” said Neil.

Strong customer demand has been noticed by many fuel merchants for BNM briquettes, with some stating that they are having difficulty in getting sufficient supplies, due to a reported quota system in place. Customers have noted that while briquette prices being charged have not increased in all locations, the carbon tax on each bale is set to rise on May 1st.

When contacted by this newspaper, Roscommon fuel distributor, Neil Connaughton, lamented the loss of the traditional product and feels that rural Ireland will be disproportionally affected.

“Many are noticing that their own children are being refused planning permission to build houses if there is to be a chimney at all and they wonder where this will all end,” he said.

SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION Sunday 14 February 2021 In the Old Testament, leprosy is depicted as punishment for disobedience of God’s commands (see Numbers 12:12–15; 2 Kings 5:27; 15:5).

Considered “unclean” – unfit to worship or live with the Israelites, lepers are considered “stillborn,” the living dead (see Numbers 12:12). Indeed, the requirements imposed on lepers in today’s First Reading –rent garments, shaven head, covered beard – are signs of death, penance, and mourning (see Leviticus 10:6; Ezekiel 24:17).

So there’s more to the story in today’s Gospel than a miraculous healing.

When Elisha, invoking God’s name, healed the leper, Naaman, it proved there was a prophet in Israel (see 2 Kings 5:8). Today’s healing reveals Jesus as far more than a great prophet – He is God visiting His people (see Luke 7:16).

Only God can cure leprosy and cleanse from sin (see 2 Kings 5:7), and only God has the power to bring about what He wills (see Isaiah 55:11; Wisdom 12:18).

The Gospel scene has an almost sacramental quality about it.

Jesus stretches out His hand – as God, by His outstretched arm, performed mighty deeds to save the Israelites (see Exodus 14:6; Acts 4:30). His ritual sign is accompanied by a divine word (“Be made clean”). And, like God’s word in creation (“Let there be”), Jesus’ word “does” what He commands (see Psalm 33:9).

The same thing happens when we show ourselves to the priest in the sacrament of penance.

On our knees like the leper, we confess our sins to the Lord, as we sing in today’s Psalm. And through the outstretched arm and divine word spoken by His priest, the Lord takes away the guilt of our sin.

Like the leper, we should rejoice in the Lord and spread the good news of His mercy. We should testify to our healing by living changed lives. As Paul says in today’s Epistle, we should do even the littlest things for the glory of God and that others may be saved.

Roscommon County Council hereby gives notice of its intention to close the road referred to hereunder for the period and the reason specified.

Road to be closed: The L-1801-14 at Cloverhill will be closed for 1900 metres between its junction with the N60 at Cloverhill and its junction with the L-18014-0 at Tonlegee.

Alternative Routes: Traffic will be diverted via N60 eastwards at Cloverhill on to the N61 Boyle Road and left onto the L-7002-0 and left onto the L-18014-0 and vice versa.

Period of Closure: The 8th of March 2021 until the 30th of April 2021.

Reason for Road Closure: Laying of water mains along the public road in the Townland of Lisagallon as part of the Roscommon Water Scheme pipe laying Contract.

All necessary approach signage and diversion signage will be used at the required locations as per Traffic Management Plan.

Residents will be contacted and notified directly by the Contractor in advance of the closure. Closures will be phased to ensure minimum disruption to locals. Maps showing proposed closure/diversions are available on www.roscommoncoco.ie Objections may be made in writing to the undersigned in respect of the proposed temporary road closure to arrive not later than 4.00 p.m. on Friday 19th February 2021.

Every day The woman in the shop in Roscommon rolled her eyes when asked how the homeschooling was going.

“I’ll never give out about schools again” she said without hesitation, “I can’t wait for them to reopen”.

Just about everyone is worn down. If we were contestants on that classic old quiz, Mastermind, our specialised subject might be ‘The new normal’ or ‘Stresses of a pandemic’.

Lockdown 3 hasn’t been observed with quite the same discipline as Lockdown 1 was. Thankfully, most people are being vigilant, and playing their part…but there is a price that simply has to be paid for what we are (rightly) being asked to do. That price is substantial. People are strained, fed up, worried about the present and the future. We are missing family, normal social interaction with friends, and the comforts we took for granted.

Worn down by the pandemic, we can’t even alleviate the pressure with a half an hour in a café, an afternoon at a match, much less a day trip or city break. The joy of planning a holiday or a weekend away has been stolen too; instead, we live in a sameness society, one stripped of its heartbeat – social interaction. We are, for the most part, prisoners of the new normal. Instead of meeting and talking with people in person, we submit to our phones and laptops, like we’re trying to scroll down to the end of Covid-19. We dance the dance of social media, once WiFi strikes up the music!

Sudden and significant lifestyle and cultural challenges and restrictions aside, the human toll continues. There has been a large increase in the number of Covid19-linked deaths over recent weeks, families and communities experiencing grief and heartbreak. Staff in our hospitals and nursing/residential homes, and others on the frontline, are now almost a year into a bewildering new existence. For many of these people, their lives are now marked by stress and sacrifice, with little enough respite.

Imagine being a worker in the health service who also has small children, and perhaps elderly parents too. All over this country there are families, punchdrunk from the mental and physical demands of the pandemic, trying to navigate their way through this epic crisis. Children with special needs and their parents/guardians are in our thoughts too.

visitor refuses to move on. Families and individuals are affected to different degrees, depending on their circumstances. There are hundreds of thousands of people who are bravely putting themselves at some risk while working/volunteering for the greater good of the wider community.

Lockdown 1, while it had its positive aspects, also had a cruel dimension. Asking people aged over 70 to cocoon in their own homes was very harsh and insensitive, a blunt instrument abruptly reached for in a moment of panic. Then, a horrible loneliness was allowed to take hold, the kindness of family members and voluntary groups notwithstanding. Now, almost a year on, a mental health crisis (not confined to any particular age group) flexes its muscles and prepares to remain on long after Covid is gone.

Creating a hierarchy of suffering isn’t helpful. I suspect that very few people are

immune to this cruel pandemic. Of course some are affected more than others, and some can cope better than others. Everyone deserves support, empathy and understanding.

Well, fools who are brazenly flouting the restrictions are an exception. They’re irresponsible and selfish.

This is a tough phase in what is now almost a year of unprecedented upheaval.

Families with young children are stressed.

That homeschooling is far from ideal. Small children must be confused, perhaps upset too, by the dismantling of familiar routines and structures. They have been great in the face of this turmoil.

Teenagers, including College students, are having a tough time too. Many College students are spending much more time at home than they could have imagined.

They are currently being denied the social interaction which is such a normal (and character-building) part of this phase of their

lives. They are making big sacrifices, and have been very resilient.

The impact on businesses is something I’m very aware of and have written about before. Behind just about every ‘Closed’ sign on the doorway of an SME, there is pressure, stress, fatigue. Those that are still trading are also thrown into a maelstrom. God knows when or how the economy will recover.

The woman in the shop who lamented the closed schools still had a smile on her face. This will all pass. As a society, we are being heroic. People working in hospitals and nursing homes are heroic, as are under-pressure GPs, carers, staff working in shops and other ‘essential services’. The elderly, many of them lonely and worried – missing grandchildren, family and friends – are heroic. The homeschooing parents and their children are heroic. Given our resilience, we are all heroic in our own way.

As I write (early in the week), another uninvited visitor is reportedly returning.

It’s the Beast from the East. This time, unlike in 2018, we didn’t all rush out to buy bread. We have bigger fish to fry, so to speak. The Beast will move on, that we know. Covid is trickier. But it too will go away. Then, there will be bright days, sunshine and smiles. The vaccine rollout is set to accelerate, and not a day too soon. Spring is on the stage and summer is in the wings. There are restrictive months still to come, and tough times still to live through. But the clouds of doom will slowly part, and sunshine will break through.

Capturing our History An oral history of An Garda Síochána 1922-2022 On February 9th 1922, the committee set up by the Provisional Government of the Irish Free State to organise a police force, met in the Gresham Hotel. On the 9th February 2021, one year out from the 100th anniversary, the Garda Síochána Retired Members Association (GSRMA) has announced an exciting project called ‘Capturing our History – an oral history of An Garda Síochána 1922-2022’.

The GSRMA is a national association of retired Gardaí/widows in Ireland, containing approximately 6,000 members – some of whom served with the initial members appointed in 1922. This project will record and capture the oral, living history of policing in modern times.

It will also seek to add to the lore of recorded history of the service.

‘Yours Sincerely’… letters to the community Roscommon Arts Centre, together with the LIVE Network are delighted to announce an exciting new letter writing project ‘Yours Sincerely’ with acclaimed writer Patrick DeWitt, author of ‘The Sisters Brothers’ and ‘French Exit’.

Patrick will write a series of letters to members of the public in Roscommon

over the coming weeks as Roscommon Arts Centre reaches out and connects with the community, and in particular older people.

Each week, project participants will receive a letter from the writer which they are encouraged (but not obliged) to respond to by return post. At the end of the project, those who participated will be

invited to meet Patrick, joining him online for a virtual cup of tea.

Patrick deWitt is the author of the critically acclaimed Ablutions, as well as the novels Undermajordomo Minor and The Sisters Brothers, which was short-listed for the Man Booker Prize.

Both The Sisters Brothers and his most recent

novel French Exit, have been released as movies.

French Exit was produced by Sony Pictures and starred Michelle Pfeiffer in the lead role of Frances. Born in British Columbia, Canada, Patrick now resides in Portland, Oregon.

Rooskey man in Syria raising funds for Colm Horkan Memorial

Corporals John Ferguson, Inishowen, Co. Donegal; Paul Burke, Dunkineely, Co. Donegal; Niall Kilcrann, Rooskey, Co. Roscommon and Niall Kelly, Doon, Co. Offaly will take part in the Colm Horkan Memorial Run at their base in Syria this Sunday.

A Rooskey man currently serving with the Defence Forces in Syria will complete a half marathon at his base this Sunday in order to raise funds for the Colm Horkan Memorial Pitch and Community Walkway Project being undertaken by Charlestown Sarsfields GAA Club in memory of the popular Garda who was killed in the line of duty in Castlerea last year.

Niall Kilcrann says that fundraising for charities and other groups in Ireland is something that members of the Defence Forces regularly take part in when stationed overseas.

“I am a Corporal currently

based with the 62nd Infantry group (UNDOF) here in Syria. We deployed here in October 2020 and will return home in early April.

“What happened to Detective Colm Horkan, and the way he tragically lost his life while on active service in the summer of last year, shocked us and everyone else in the country.

“We, both as an organisation and as a small group here in Syria, wish to do our bit to keep his memory alive by helping in whatever small way we can,” he said.

This Sunday (14th) a half marathon, 5k and 10k race will take place on a 1km loop

at the base in Syria to raise funds for the development in Co. Mayo.

A virtual race, which will run alongside the event, will give others the chance to take part also and participants can join in by visiting www.popupraces.ie and searching for ‘Colm Horkan Memorial Run’.

Those wishing to donate can do so at www.ifundraise. ie and will be entered into a draw with great prizes on offer including an Italia ’90 World Cup jersey signed by Paul McGrath, and signed Damien Duff and Dublin GAA jerseys as well as One4All vouchers and an official race t-shirt.

The Garbally College students organised a virtual tractor run called ‘Driving

on for Cathy’ as well as an online auction to raise the money for the Irish Cancer Society, Galway Hospice and Mayo Roscommon Hospice.

‘Value Early Years’ protest at Greenfields Childcare < DAN DOONER

Staff at the Greenfields Childcare Centre in Lisnamult, Roscommon town staged a virtual protest at the facility this week in a bid to gain proper recognition from the Government for workers in the childcare sector.

Staff member and SIPTU representative, Aoife Donoghue, said childcare staff were under increased pressure.

“We are looking for more recognition for the work we do and to highlight the continued efforts of staff in the childcare sector,” she said.

“We are under a lot more

stress now with extra work and further guidelines and deadlines and we are hoping that the Government acknowledges this and provides funding”.

Aoife said the Greenfields Childcare Centre was currently operating at around 20% capacity due to the ongoing

Covid-19 restrictions.

“We reopened two weeks ago to cater for essential workers and vulnerable children but we are looking forward to returning to full capacity because we do what we do for the kids. So far we’ve been lucky that no-one has had to be let go but we need

Staff now hope that the recent virtual protest will highlight the challenges faced by many in the sector and that State funding will be made available.

Funding stream in development – Naughten A funding stream is being developed by the Department of Children to address the shortfall in funding currently being experienced by childcare providers, local TD Denis Naughten has confirmed.

“As a result of Level 5 restrictions childcare providers are currently only providing a service to the children of essential workers and to vulnerable children, which has left many providers in a situation where they are unable to generate income to meet ongoing bills such as heating, insurance, mortgage etc.,” explained Denis Naughten.

“Some providers are operating at just 10% of their capacity and it is simply not feasible for many of these facilities to continue charging fees to parents whose children are unable to attend and some of whom may themselves now be out of work”.

Deputy Naughten raised the issue with the Minister for Children, Roderic O’Gorman, on behalf of local childcare providers.

Responding, the Minister said: “Despite beneficiary schemes funding continuing to flow from the Department, along with access to the EWSS, some services may be left with shortterm sustainability concerns due to lower income levels arising from current restrictions. Officials within my Department are currently developing a specific strand of funding to support sustainability issues arising out of the impact of full and part time early learning and care and school age childcare services opening only for the children of essential workers and vulnerable children”.

It’s hard to credit that it’s almost a year since we had our first Covid lockdown, and if we are to believe last weekend’s news there are now loads of new doubts about the effectiveness of some of the vaccines – and we are being warned that they may not be about to bring an end to the pandemic.

However, regardless of what happens in the future, there can be no doubt that

the coronavirus brought out the good in loads of people all around the globe. Nobody arguably did more to lift the spirits of their country than 100-year-old Tom Moore, who walked 100 laps of his garden with the intention of raising 1000 pounds for the NHS, before actually raising more than 32 million pounds. Sadly he passed away last week, ironically from the dreaded virus, but

Over here, in April of last year former Mayo footballer David Brady started an initiative in which county footballers or ex-players would phone some of their supporters and chat to them.

Never too many cooks (or gardeners)…

It’s Saturday night, I have had a look at a bit of the Manchester United self-destruct exercise against Everton, paid a visit to The Masked Singer, and, now – shortly after 11 pm – I am heading for bed. I have to admit that it is hard to figure it all out. Not too long ago – up to March of 2020 – I would have been heading to the local for a few quiet pints and a bit of a chat, and the truth is I would be in no hurry at all to get to the comfort of my leaba.

And as I headed off to bed, my mind drifted back to my secondary school days, way back in the 1960s, and I started to think about the lads that I went to school with. I began to reflect on where they ended up (at least those whose life path I am aware of).

Funny enough, nearly all of them went to university and ended up in big ‘high end’ jobs. It made me realise that, at that time, the main focus was on jobs like teaching, banking, engineering, and other so-called white collar jobs, while the trades were almost completely neglected.

Recently, as I wrote here previously, I find myself watching more television than I ever did before, and it seems to me that the two jobs to

have nowadays are as a chef or a gardener. The number of chefs that appear on different programmes is extraordinary, including our own (Creggs-based) celebrity chef, Jeeny Maltese, and on every live show there is someone showing us how to serve up some amazing dishes. Every conceivable type of exotic meal is prepared, and we are always being told how simple and easy they are to make, conveniently

overlooking the fact that they have the very best of kitchen equipment, all the ingredients at their fingertips, and the time to do it. It’s a bit different from working in a small kitchen with one blackened pan and a couple of saucepans with the bottoms burnt out of them, but obviously the public must love the celebrity chefs and it seems no show can do without them.

However, even the number of chefs

pales into insignificance compared to the number of gardening programmes there are on the telly, with any amount of shows doing garden makeovers for people, with budgets ranging from the very modest to the absolutely mind-boggling. Back in the day when our own Diarmuid Gavin and the UK’s Alan Titchmarsh first made their tentative steps on our screens, I would safely say they never thought there would be so many to follow in their footsteps.

The Rich Brothers, Monty Don and Charlie Dimmock are among the big names that currently appear on various gardening programmes, and as my wife Carol works in Ardcarne Garden Centre I find myself tuning in to most of them.

Up to a couple of years ago my only big gardening ‘achievement’ was to fail to successfully grow my daffodils. Now I can tell you what a rose is, and, at a push, even how to grow them. Back in school all those years ago, I don’t think we had any Career Guidance counsellors, but if we had, none of them told me to be either a chef or a gardener. What a pity. I could have been a TV star!

And finally…

Finally for this week, you may remember that a few weeks ago I told you about our immobilised dishwasher, how we were at that time into our third week waiting for the engineer to come to fix it, and how I (but definitely not Carol) felt the appliance was not as important or as useful as people thought, and that we were (nearly) better off without one.

I have now found out that the Government shares my opinion, because the reason we are still without it – and haven’t had a call from the engineer – is that the powers that be have decreed that a journey to fix a dishwasher is not necessary, and therefore under this lockdown it is not allowed. Had it been the cooker – or anything to do with eating – they could have travelled, but – backing up my theory about its usefulness – the dishwasher does not qualify. Therefore, we have stocked up on the Fairy Liquid, got in loads of tea towels, and are ready for another few weeks, maybe even months, of washing our dishes by hand.

As a result, we are also following the advice of washing our hands several times a day, so it’s a win-win all round. There could be a slightly used, secondhand dishwasher (temporarily out of commission) for sale soon.

A year of firsts for local female politicians A year on from the General Election of 2020, Dan Dooner got the thoughts of two local women on their first year in the Oireachtas…

It is now just over a year since Claire Kerrane became the first Sinn Féin candidate from Roscommon elected to Dáil Éireann since the ‘Election of the Snows’ in 1917.

She told the Roscommon People that her first year has been shaped by the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It has been nothing like I could have ever imagined,” she says, “I wanted to engage with people and to be visiting different places and groups this year but Covid-19 has unfortunately prevented that from happening –but I feel very lucky to represent Roscommon and Galway.

“Social media has been really important and in some ways TDs have never been more accessible. There have been some positives but there are also people who like to have face-to-face meetings too and I’m very conscious of them,” she said.

As only the third female TD in Roscommon’s history, how does she assess the challenges facing local women in politics?

“When I think of women in politics, I think of women with families. My sister had her first baby last year, if that was me I think I’d find it hard to keep doing this job.

“There have been steps taken to make it easier for TDs with children, such as moving the voting block to Thursday afternoons, but everything is up in the air now due to Covid. Travel is a big issue as well. If you’re living away from Dublin, it’s automatically more difficult to be a TD. “But there are several reasons why more women don’t get involved in politics, however, and it’s hard to pinpoint just one. There certainly aren’t enough women in the Dáil and even looking at Roscommon County Council it’s nowhere near the 50-50 mark,” she said.

“First of all, you should never think that you’re too young. While canvassing for the last election I had someone tell me they couldn’t vote for me because I didn’t have enough life experience.

But you’re never too young if you care enough about the issues. You should never be afraid to make that stand if you believe in something,” she said.

Meanwhile, Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan is on

Castlerea Community School student, Isabelle Flanagan, is taking inspiration from Social Democrats TD Holly Cairns’ ‘More Mná’ campaign and calling for more female politicians, both locally and nationally.

The 18-year-old is a daughter of MEP Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan and works as a secretary with the Social Democrats. She has been highlighting the need for change on social media recently.

“There are only 36 female TDs and just three elected members of Roscommon County Council who are women, which is really disappointing,” she said.

“Many young people want to get involved in politics…and I have been using Twitter and Instagram to discuss issues affecting us,” she said.

Isabelle claims that there are many young people, particularly young women, who don’t feel represented by the leading political parties and cited the lack of Repeal campaigning among local representatives as an example of this.

“Claire Kerrane has done a really good job (representing the constituency) and I would consider the likes of Holly Cairns, Catherine Murphy, Roisin Shortall (all Social Democrats), Catherine Connelly and Lynn Ruane (Independents) as good role models along with Clare Claffey, who is the only female councillor in Offaly. But I don’t feel represented by the likes of Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael locally and I think there are many others like me,” she said. course to complete her first year in the Seanad and she has also had to rely on Zoom and social media to engage with the public this year.

“It has been an honour and privilege to be another voice for the area in the Seanad

and being able to highlight the positives and raise the challenges we face locally with Ministers,” she said.

The former Ballinasloe area councillor did admit, however, that more needs to be done to make it easier for

women to enter the political sphere.

“The number of councillors was reduced (ahead of the last local elections in 2019) and, whatever way you slice that, Ireland now has one of the highest populations per representative in Europe.

“Many women would enter politics at the local level and use it as a starting point and to build a base, but now it’s harder to do that.

“Also, I think there does need to be more supports, such as maternity leave, for politicians who have young children. Voting also needs to be looked at again in terms of the Dáil and Seanad because it’s not fair on those who have young families at home to be voting late in the evening,” she added.

In terms of representation, Senator Dolan said that political parties and local authorities have a responsibility towards helping women to gain access to the world of politics.

“I think the parties themselves need to change the dynamic too and find new ways of engaging with more people and (having them engage) in politics.

“It’s also up to the local authorities to be more focussed on bringing female candidates forward,” she concluded.

Speaking out about abuse is never easy… but it is incredibly brave You’re the average family; you drop your kids off at school, you bring them to GAA practice, you sign them up for dance and drama lessons (or you will, once restrictions are lifted).

Now, during these strange Covidfilled days, you, as a responsible parent, are actively encouraging your child to go online to engage in virtual learning. And why not? Isn’t the Internet a wonderful learning tool and a great resource when it comes to finding information?

In addition, in a world where families have become separated – scattered across the country and, in some instances, across the world – engaging in Zoom chats and sharing family photos and videos with each other has become the highlight of our lives. So you get it; the Internet is good.

However, by allowing our children

access to the World Wide Web, we are also unwittingly, and through no fault of our own, horrifically placing them in the precarious position of potentially becoming easy prey to deviants who use it as an access point into their young, innocent lives. This includes social media, multiplayer video games and chat apps.

I mention this on foot of last week’s conviction of a County Longford child abuser (a former teacher). It’s thanks to the courage of his ‘victim’ (she’s a brave survivor in my eyes) speaking out and reporting him to Gardaí that this sick person is now behind bars. It’s also thanks to Judge Keenan Johnson, who, during a sitting of Longford Circuit Court, ruled that this pervert could be publicly named. It’s an unusual step for a Judge to allow a sex offender to be

identified due to concerns that their naming could also lead to the identity of their ‘victim’. I’ve chosen not to name him here because his identity’s already in the public domain and it’s not my intention to afford him notoriety.

According to reports, this abuser pleaded guilty to four counts of having sex with this child and one charge of sexual exploitation, having befriended her via a friend request from a fake Facebook page back in 2013, when she was just a 13-year-old girl.

As a result of his conviction, his name has now rightly been added to the long list of the four hundred and fifty plus poisonous offenders currently serving time in our prison system for engaging in sexual violence. He’s doing a five-year stretch.

I hope the young girl, now a 21-year-

old adult – who was an innocent child of 13 when this then-teacher, in a position of power and trust, carried out a series of petrifying and disturbing sexual assaults on her – is extremely proud of herself. In coming forward she has championed the cause of all those who were groomed, used and abused as children by warped paedophiles like him to reach out and seek justice.

It was reported that this young lady, in her victim impact statement declared: “This man made me feel like I was completely worthless and undeserving of any support because I let this happen”. She did not let this happen. This was not her fault. She had absolutely no control over her abuser’s disgusting actions. She did not create the toxic environment… he did. She should not feel guilty.

What she should feel however is betrayed, confused, coerced, hurt, manipulated and shocked. She should also feel enormous pride… pride in herself, pride in her parents who supported her and in those members of An Garda Síochána who investigated and secured a prosecution.

By speaking out, this girl, in her steadfast refusal to slot into the role of ‘victim’, has become a fierce warrior.

She is a doer who has shown true grit and grace. Hold your head high, my love; your bravery has given a voice to the voiceless. You took that deep breath, you ignored the extreme nausea that must have been rising inside of you, you walked into that Garda Station and reported the person who caused you harm. You are a Wonder Woman.

When Cupid and quarantine don’t mix…

Given the amount of prescheduled, heavily-filtered-kissy-huggylovey-dovey pics being posted on social media these days, it seems that lockdown is proving something of a success for some couples.

These are the one who’re so wrapped up in each other’s love-bubble that they play tonsil tennis while out walking, arms locked around each other, blocking the path and forcing you to step into the road in order to keep your two metre distance! Puke alert!

However, given we’re into our third lockdown, if you’re finding that familiarity and unaccustomed proximity is now breeding contempt, and instead of getting dressed up in your seductive smalls for this Valentine’s Day, you’ll be instead dragging on a pair of leggings, don’t despair – you are not alone!

As the country remains stuck on pause, it’s only natural that this stressful situation would place a strain on even the most loving of relationships. Gone are those nights spent enjoying a romantic meal or an impromptu overnight getaway. Instead, in their place are in-your-face arguments and, sadly, in the case of one couple we’re close to, talks of separation. (They’re in Dublin, so you can stop speculating as to who they are!).

But hey, if any of us were looking to mix love with lockdown, we were sadly mistaken – especially if every little slurp, chew or breath he takes grates on you, and every little whinge, whine and moan you make irritates him, leading you both to ask…just who is this person I’m imprisoned with? My advice: this weekend, ignore the fact he’s eaten all the quarantine snacks (again), and she’s guzzled down all the quarantine wine and instead, sit down together and make a list of all the things you’re looking forward to enjoying as a couple and as individuals in your post-lockdown lives. Happy St. Valentine’s Day, folks.

Vaccine rollout hampered by forest of red tape!

Referring to the arrival of the first doses of AstraZeneca – a mere 21,600 of them – into the country as being a ‘big day,’ the man-without-a-plan, aka Health Minister Stephen Donnelly, appeared to be looking for a pat on the back. He won’t get one from me however, because it’s not exactly happy hour for our senior citizens living in rural Roscommon, some of whom have been cocooning since last March.

Our darling seniors, who were initially promised protection from this killer virus by the end of next month,

now are not just being faced with the setback that it’ll now be April before they can feel safe and protected, they’ll also probably be discriminated as a result of their postcodes. How come? Well, it has emerged that in order to receive the vaccine, our seniors may be forced to ‘travel to a specially converted centre such as a parish hall’, the explanation being that administering the jab ‘would only be possible in cities and towns where there are large practices with multiple doctors’.

So let me get this straight, Minister… elderly people (many of whom

are vulnerable, infirm, frightened, confused, without transport or are living alone) may be compelled to travel outside of their comfort zones to get a life-saving jab? I’m just wondering – aside from bureaucratic nonsense – is there any reason why our excellent local GP practices can’t be provided with sufficient amounts of vaccines for patients on their books, and be trusted to direct and drive their own personal, rollout initiative? Or is that just too straightforward a plan for our government?

Kerrane calls for HAP review Speaking on Wednesday, Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane called on the Minister for Housing, Darragh O’Brien, to review HAP rates across the state. Her comments come in light of figures that show that over 130 of those on HAP are in receipt of the maximum topup of 20% in Roscommon.

Deputy Kerrane said: “HAP rates are particularly

low for single people and this has long been raised as an issue. It is near impossible to rent a property within the HAP limits as a single person in this state.

“The other HAP rates clearly need to be reviewed.

Currently, there are 466 people on HAP in Roscommon (this doesn’t include those on homeless HAP).

Of these, 35% are in receipt

of a discretionary top-up.

30% of these are in receipt of the maximum top-up of 20%. This shows that the HAP rates are not reflective of the rental market currently.

“We need to see a real ban on rent increases. We need to see a full rollout of Homeless HAP because currently this only operates in Dublin but there are homeless peo-

ple across the state.

“According to the Daft Q4 2020 report, the average rent in Roscommon is €745 and rising. With the maximum HAP limit for a family with three children of €550, a 20% top-up doesn’t begin to cover the rent needed.

We know people are paying cash top-ups and that this is putting them under serious financial strain”.

‘Merger will hurt border towns’ Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has said he fears that any proposed merger of Galway City and County Councils would stifle development in rural parts of County Galway.

Senator Murphy and his Fianna Fáil colleague Senator Ollie Crowe brought a joint motion before the Seanad this week, signalling their opposition to any suggestion of merging Galway City and County Councils.

Senator Murphy told the Seanad that County Galway is simply too large of an area to be served by one council.

“I would be very concerned for towns and villages along the border such as Ballygar, Dunmore, Williamstown, Glenamaddy and Ballinasloe, and I would fear that any move to merge the city and county councils would only stifle development in border towns or outlying areas of County Galway.

“Look at what happened in Ballinasloe with the loss of the Town Council – I believe the town suffered as a result of that move. I would not be in favour of merging the city and county councils; I think it is the wrong decision”.

Tower at Roscommon Castle expected to open by Easter The recently refurbished tower at Roscommon Castle is expected to be open to public by Easter, following confirmation by the Office of Public Works earlier this week.

Independent TD Denis Naughten had raised the issue with Minister Patrick O’Donavan and said he welcomes the news.

High Court decision throws a significant lifeline to businesses < SEAN MAHON (Mahon Sweeney Solicitors, Roscommon & Elphin)

Last week, the High Court threw a significant lifeline to businesses, and in particular pubs, hotels and restaurants, which have been affected by the requirement to close or partially close during the Covid lockdown and whose businesses have been devastated. There is no doubt but that the hospitality sector has been the sector most affected by the Covid lockdown.

Many of the pubs, hotels and restaurants had business interruption insurance in place and, not unreason-

ably, expected the insurers to honour the policies rather than attempt to use very technical language to avoid their responsibilities. It would seem, anecdotally, that the insurers covered about 10% of claims. The insurers refused to indemnify the remaining claimants.

In the recent case against FBD, the High Court has given clear indication that the insurance policies should cover losses incurred by businesses forced to close, even in a pandemic. It did so in the knowledge that it would apply against other insurance companies as well and potentially have broader applications.

Pubs, hotels, restaurants and other

businesses across the county were informed by their insurers that the losses sustained by them as a result of Covid were not covered by their Business Interruption Policies. The Courts have decided otherwise. The insurance companies tried to rely on overly technical and legalistic interpretation of the policies (drafted by them), but the Courts took a more common sense approach to the terms in the policy.

The advantage of having the benefit of this court decision enables policy holders across the county to renew or reinstate their claims under their policies with the insurers, and if they don’t honour the claims, they can consider

instituting Proceedings or lodge complaints with the Financial Ombudsman’s Office (or the Central Bank) as the Courts and Ombudsman’s Office will apply the interpretation endorsed by the High Court in the FBD case.

Claimants should not have to take the risk of Court Proceedings and should be able to rely on the Ombudsman’s Office to ensure that the insurance companies honour their obligations, where appropriate.

In lots of instances, policy holders should be entitled to be indemnified against losses from the dates upon which the Government ordered the closure, or partial closure, of their

businesses. This would be important for restaurants that remained open but could only provide a partial service e.g. takeaway service only.

Before this case, the question was: am I indemnified? Now, for many in the hospitality sector, the question is rather: how do I calculate my losses?

Another consideration that businesses will have to take into account (as I am sure the Revenue Commissioners will) is whether or not any settlement payment is taxable. The likelihood is there will be another dispute down the line as to how the Revenue Commissioners treat the proceeds of a claim under Business Interruption Policy.

Local salon owner: Current restrictions are ridiculous! < DAN DOONER

The owner of QF Hair Salon in Strokestown has said that services such as hairdressers are much safer than premises such as restaurants and pubs and has called on the Government to consider reopening them sooner under lower levels of restrictions.

Fiona Reilly opened her business on June 29th of last year and has faced a turbulent first year of Covid-19 lockdowns.

“I was only open until October before we were shut so I just feel I haven’t really had a proper chance,” she said this week.

“When I was allowed to reopen again in December I was literally working every day until we were told to close on Christmas Eve. There has been a lot of guesswork because, as a colour specialist, the majority of my clients would need a few visits as part of the treatment. It meant that I was very wary of taking new clients on”.

Fiona said hair salons like hers have always prioritised cleanliness but that Covid-19 has seen extra efforts made in order to safeguard clients.

“The current level of restrictions is ridiculous. It’s not the same as going into a restaurant or a pub. Even before Covid-19, it was one of the safest and cleanest places you could be and I think we should be placed at a lower level.

quickly became a one to one service, and clients wear a mask for the duration while they sit in one spot in a disposable gown. When you’re quiet in a hair salon you are constantly cleaning and we have sterilising machines to

make sure that everything is properly sanitised,” she said.

The Dublin native, who relocated to Roscommon nineteen years ago, said she wasn’t surprised by Tánaiste Leo Varadkar’s comments earlier this week, which sug-

gested hairdressers would remain closed well beyond March 5th.

“It really didn’t surprise me.

They just don’t seem to think of it as any type of essential service – it’s like they laugh at it!

“It’s not just a hairdressers

though, it is very much a personal service and I see that in how it affects my clients. They come in here to vent and they always leave with a smile on their face. I have clients of all ages and they’re always asking when I’ll be back open.

“For now, I’m just using the QF Hair Salon Facebook and Instagram pages to stay in touch with them and offer them any help I can. Every week I put different hair care tips up there and just hope that it’s of some help to them,” she concluded.

It’s tough on all involved, but Roscommon GAA continues to maintain links with communities during lockdown… < DAN DOONER

While there was confirmation yesterday (Wednesday) that GAA activity will not resume this side of Easter, Roscommon clubs will remain busy in the coming weeks as they take steps to safeguard their links to local communities. Activities may have moved online for now, but members are working hard behind the scenes so they can be ready for a return to play.

As Chairperson of Roscommon GAA, Brian Carroll knows all about the challengers posed by Covid.

“The GAA is facing all kinds of challenges in the county,” he said. “With schools closed, children aren’t beginning to play the games when they should and our Games Promotion Officers can’t get into the schools either to help with development.

“Clubs also face a huge challenge at the younger age groups, such as U-8s and U-10s, when new players are supposed to introduced to the games.

They are doing the best they can but their hands are tied due to the lockdown”.

Brian also highlighted the limited options clubs have when it comes to fundraising and said getting creative is now the name of the game.

“Our development sides are struggling too but they’re using the likes of Zoom to keep them in touch with their teammates and management. All we can do is keep them together, and have them ready to get back out there when the time comes.

“It’s not just the development of football or hurling skills that suffers, but also the development of social skills. The GAA is how they get to know each other in their own parish and other parishes too. It also helps them to develop a community ethos.

“Clubs are doing the very best they can and our Games Promotion Officers are working with them in order to share ideas and put sessions together.

It’s good that we have the likes of Zoom and Microsoft Teams but they won’t replace getting back out onto the pitch”.

At club level, Roscommon Gaels chairperson Teresa Hession says lockdowns have been a struggle.

“We just about managed the lockdowns last year but that was down to good financial planning.

Clubs are facing into another year now with no major fundraisers and that’s going to be very challenging.

“At Roscommon Gaels we’ve just launched our online lotto through social media but it’s not reaching out to a large group of people like previous fundraisers.

“The social side is another huge part of the GAA club and without matches and training and our bingo and card games at the Hyde Centre, people are really missing the interaction.

“Matches and training sessions play a big part for kids and adults too and even parents and grandparents who may have socialised on the sidelines.

It’s been really tough on club members,” she said.

Teresa added that the uncertainty of not knowing when Gaelic games will return has been tough too as the Gaels had big plans for the development of their clubhouse and facilities at Lisnamult.

“We’re still very busy off the pitch, planning and organising online training. But the excitement of last year is gone because our plans our now on hold. We will plough on but things are moving

much slower now.

“Roscommon Gaels aren’t in this alone though and clubs across the county have been great at backing each other and their communities. We have reached out to our elderly members and neighbours and we also find that when we reach out, our members and other clubs are there to help. That’s what makes the GAA so special,” she said.

Meanwhile, the closure of pitches has meant that coaches must think outside the box and St. Brigid’s coach and Mayo Games Promotion Officer, Kieran Kilkenny, is using technology to keep Kiltoom’s next generation of stars on their toes.

“I noticed with my own lad that he was missing his school friends and the social interaction in January.

“I decided to start training sessions online and now we’re using Microsoft Teams so we can train

the U-9s. We’ve done two sessions and we’ve had about 24 or 25 players so far. There has been a good response from both parents and kids,” he explained.

Kieran says the priorities are to keep youngsters physically active and allow them to have social interaction with their teammates.

“The sessions include fifteen minutes of body weight exercises suitable for their age group; fifteen minutes of basic skills; and then we spend fifteen minutes on a quiz at the end.

“You’re not going to make them a top class footballer but the key points are keeping active, social interaction and keeping them in touch with their friends,” he said.

Roscommon’s dressing rooms and playing fields may be quiet for now, but rest assured the county’s GAA action has only moved online as clubs and officials endeavour to retain the association’s famed sense of community.

“

Time will tell, however, whether creative fundraising and ‘games focussed’ sessions for underage players will become the norm for 2021 or if the fun and games can resume in person this summer.

“In developing any programme or business plan, the first issue to be addressed is always the funding. This is no different for the TB programme. It’s a fundamental requirement that this issue be resolved. It’s not credible to seek to finalise a programme without sight of the resources that will be available to it,” he said.

The IFA Chairman has called for

the Financial Technical Working Group to be convened in the first instance and the issues of funding of the programme and financial supports to be addressed.

Mr. Farrell said the Department would be “putting the cart ahead of the horse” if they push ahead with imposing a new programme on farmers without any agreement on the key financial issues. He called on the Minister to ensure his officials implement the terms and the sentiment of the new TB Strategy.

Lough Funshinagh farm inspections slammed IFA Deputy President, Brian Rushe, has slammed the Department of Agriculture following revelations that inspections have been carried out in recent days on farmers who are battling floodwaters on the shoreline of Lough Funshinagh in Rahara.

The Deputy President said: “It is incredible that we have one arm of the State (Roscommon County Council) doing

their best to help the farming community in dire circumstances by raising roads and pumping water away from sheds and homes, while another arm of the state is counting sheep and inspecting the same farms”.

The IFA Deputy President added that the farming community in the area are already under heightened stress and exhaustion while dealing with rising water levels threatening

their homes and property.

He said that “a commonsense approach is needed here by the Department of Agriculture, until some semblance of normality has returned to the area”.

“It is important that farmers are aware that under agreed Covid-19 protocols between the Department and farm organisations, a farmer has the right to defer an inspection for three weeks,” he concluded.

The IFA President said the Mercosur trade deal cannot progress and the existing access granted to beef not produced to our standards, including environmental, societal, traceability and animal health and welfare must be stopped.

Meanwhile, IFA National Livestock Chairman Brendan Golden has said the latest beef market tracker price shows Irish prices running 5c/kg ahead of the Export Benchmark Price, which is at €3.70/kg.

This leaves beef prices up

to 80c/kg below breakeven prices based on Teagasc calculations.

Brendan Golden said the full benefits of the strong supermarket trade for beef in the UK and throughout the EU is undermined by the acceptance of these substandard products to fill some of the demand.

“UK supermarkets over the Christmas period increased beef sales by 1.4k/t or 18%, but Irish beef farmers are not seeing the full benefits of this as a result of the flawed and contradictory EU policies on trade,” he said.

He added that this clearly highlights the dysfunction of the EU beef market caused by the double standards of policy makers who continue to ignore how beef is produced in these countries, while increasing demands on Irish beef farmers.

“The EU Commission cannot defend current or future trade agreements when it shows that by

2030 beef imports into the EU can increase by up to 100,000t and in the process reduce beef prices for Irish and EU farmers by a further 2.2%, in a sector that is already accepted as extremely vulnerable and operating on a below cost basis.

“Factories are slowing the kill and attempting to ease prices with some quoting €3.80/kg for heifers. Most cattle are moving at a base of €3.80 for steers and €3.85/kg for heifers.

“Irish farmers produce to the highest standards demanded by the EU and must not be undermined in our key markets, where prices are depressed by the flood of cheap and substandard imports”.

Mr. Golden concluded: “The EU cannot continue on the diverging paths of higher standards on Irish beef farmers and erosion of the value of the CAP while at the same time selling out on our key markets for beef”.

Murphy defends Fianna Fáil’s commitment on agriculture Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has taken issue with comments by Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice on the issue of Fianna Fáil’s position on agriculture.

Senator Murphy says farmers in Roscommon-Galway have a real voice at Government level, and has pointed to “major investment” made by the Fianna Fáil party in agriculture.

Referring to recent comments by Deputy Fitzmaurice, Senator Murphy – who is the Seanad Spokesperson on Community, Rural Affairs and the Islands – said: “Contrary to what some opposition TDs claim, this Government is very pro-farming and pro-rural Ireland”.

He added: “I am a strong advocate for the farming community, and I have a real voice into Government and a direct

line to the Fianna Fáil Minister for Agriculture. From my involvement with various farming groups, I believe such groups want to work on green initiatives once they are fair for everyone. The new REPS II in 2021 will, I believe, be fair to farmers and the green agenda. Farming groups are not anti-environment, and they are willing to work on various initiatives once they are fair and balanced”.

The Fianna Fáil Senator also pointed out that Budget 2021 had provided €450 million for schemes like GLAS and ANCs to support livestock farmers and improve the economic and environmental performance of their herds, all while providing valuable income support for the sector.

Senator Murphy also said that in the Programme for Government, Fianna

Fáil had ensured that live exports would not be reduced, also taking time to highlight the fact that the ring-fenced €23m from the Carbon Tax, along with additional €56million funding from the EU, will be allocated to a range of new pilot Environmental measures.

“There are many challenges facing the farming and agricultural sector, and it is critically important to protect farm incomes, but also to maintain a focus on building strategic pathways for the sustainable development of the agri-food and fisheries sectors into the future.

“As the only Government Oireachtas member in County Roscommon, I believe I am ideally placed to be a strong advocate and voice for the farming community,” concluded Senator Murphy.

On Thursday, February 4th, the heifer ring, which had a good number of quality stores on offer, noticed prices peak at 2.94 a kilo, while the bullocks peaked at 2.59 a kilo, with both rings having good clearances. The weanling trade was similar to last week, while the dry cow trade (with a lot of store cows on offer) was unchanged. The numbers of suck calves on offer continue to grow, with quality a big factor in price.

Loneliness has been linked to an increased risk of early death, with some studies highlighting that older people experiencing high levels of loneliness are twice as likely to die within six years compared to those who aren’t. Studies have linked loneliness and social isolation to higher risks of physical and mental conditions, including heart disease, anxiety, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease.

In 2020, ALONE made nearly 139,000 ‘Support and Befriending’ calls to older people suffering from loneliness and social isolation. Between March 9th and December 31st, ALONE supported nearly 15,000 older people. Of these callers, 31% were aged between 75-90 years and 75% were living alone. Based on 2016 Census figures, there were approximately 876,423 people aged over 60 living in Ireland, a figure that is expected to grow to 1.42 million by 2031.

For some older people, loneliness is an unfamiliar issue that, with community supports, will eventually cease to affect them. For others however, this is an ongoing state of being. ALONE are determined to ensure every older person has access to the supports they need to combat loneliness and to live a happy, fulfilled life. If someone calls or is referred to ALONE, the organisation can arrange to contact an older person several times a week or every day if this support is needed, with the service set to continue after the current crisis.

“People have enough stress right now, without having to worry about hearing aids batteries running down”, says Dolores Madden, Audiologist and Marketing Director at Hidden Hearing. “We saw huge demand during the

first lockdown, with over 17,000 availing of the offer. Issuing free replacement batteries for hearing aids again to anyone in need makes sense”.

Also, as part of their #PleaseSpeakUp, campaign, Hidden Hearing will now provide free face masks with each set of batteries. The masks feature a please speak up speech bubble for people who are hard of hearing to wear, so that those they meet in public, and particularly in stores, will understand their difficulty.

The use of facemasks and screens in retail outlets and public places, like GPs’ surgeries, makes life difficult on account of the muffled sound effect, says Dolores Madden.

“Everyone is encouraged to wear a mask to protect themselves and others. But unfortunately, this makes it difficult to hear, and that can add to the feeling of isolation for the hearing impaired, especially when they fail to understand what is being said”, the hearing specialist explains.

It is hoped that, as people recognise the #PleaseSpeakUp facemask, they will speak clearly, raise their voice a little and take the time to ensure that the individual understands.

The Samaritans came to Ireland in 1962 and there are now 21 branches on the island. Athlone and Midlands Samaritans (Registered Charity Number 20202464) opened on February 1st, 1992, in 3, Court Devenish, Athlone with seventy volunteers. Its catchment area covers counties Westmeath, Roscommon, Longford and Offaly.

There is no paid staff in the Athlone branch – all work is done by volunteers. Volunteers maintain the service to the public and also give additional time to recruit and train new volunteers and take part in fundraising, publicity and outreach activities. Family members, friends and former volunteers also help with fundraising activities.

Samaritans offer a confidential, non-judgemental befriending service to any-

one who wishes to contact them. They are particularly dedicated to supporting callers in crisis and those considering taking their own lives. Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide.

Samaritans mission is to ensure that there is someone there for anyone who needs a listening ear, round the clock, seven days a week.

Every 49 seconds, someone contacts Samaritans in Ireland. A person does not have to be contemplating suicide to get in touch with Samaritans. Many people struggle to cope at one point or another in their lives. Very many are experiencing a range of emotions during this time of uncertainty and restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Average rent in Roscommon up 3.6% – Daft.ie According to the Daft.ie Rental Price Report, the price of rent in Roscommon was, on average, 3.6% higher in the final three months of 2020 than a year previously. The average listed rent is now €745, up 51% from its lowest point. Rents in Connacht rose 3% year-on-year, reflecting a sharp fall in availability. Just 138 homes were available to rent on February 1st, down over 60% compared to a year ago.

The average rent nationwide in the final three months of 2020 was 0.9% higher than a year previously, according to the latest Rental Report by Daft. ie. The average monthly rent stood at €1,414 in the final quarter of 2020, up from a low of €742 per month seen in late 2011.

The national average hides significant regional variation, though. In Dublin, rents fell 3.3% during the year 2020, with rent declines con-

centrated in the second and fourth quarters of the year. In the rest of the country however, rents rose by 5.4% on average during 2020, with only a modest fall in the second quarter lockdown and an increase during the final three months of the year. In Limerick city, rents were almost 4% higher year-on-year, while in Cork and Galway cities the increase was just under 5%. In Waterford city, rents rose by 5.6% - the same rate of increase as in

the rest of the country.

“Rents in the capital – and in Ireland’s other main cities – remain at twice their level a decade ago”, commented Ronan Lyons, economist at Trinity College Dublin and author of the Daft Report.

“Oftentimes, people query whether the basics of supply and demand apply to the housing market. These latest figures should remove any lingering doubts about the importance of

supply in lower rents.

“Outside Dublin, Covid-19 has led to a further worsening of supply conditions in the rental market, with the number of homes coming on each month down 17% on already low levels.

“While demand for rental homes outside the capital has fallen – with the rise in unemployment – it has not fallen as much as supply, pushing rents further upwards”.

Work starts on rural broadband in mid-Roscommon

High-speed broadband connections should be available to rural homes in mid-Roscommon by autumn at the latest with National Broadband Ireland starting construction of its fibre optic network in the area this week.

Pre-orders for connections to the 500 mbps super high-speed network are expected to begin from September.

Sub-contractors have now started to cut back hedges and lay cable in ducting in the areas around Roscommon town including Ballymurray, Knockcroghery, Lecarrow, Athleague, Castlecoote, Donamon, Ballymacurley, Kilrooskey and Fourmilehouse.

Independent TD and former Communications Minister, Denis Naughten, has admitted that the timeline may experience further delays.

“There has been a 12-week delay due to Covid-19, but National Broadband Ireland is hopeful it can make up some of this time during the current phase.

“This timeline has seen slippage of about twelve weeks as a result of Covid-19, and due to delays to the installation of telecoms infrastructure,” he said.

“However, there still remains a risk to the completion dates due to the pandemic. It is expected that the vast majority of connections to homes will be from the nearest eir telephone pole and it is important that homeowners make sure they can connect to the fibre when it comes to their door, by ensuring there are no trees etc. blocking the route from their home to the nearest telephone pole or that any ducts are free of dirt and debris.

“While the initial build-out will start in the rural areas around Ballinasloe, work has already commenced around Roscommon town with work in Athlone, other parts of south Roscommon and Carrick-on-Shannon taking place later in the year. These will be some of the first areas in the country to get this new broadband.

“The next phase of the build-out will include Castlerea, Elphin, Rooskey, Curraghboy, Cloonfad in west Roscommon and Newbridge, Co. Galway to complete the coverage of County Roscommon and East Galway,” he concluded.

Over €220k in GRETB funding welcomed Funding of €220,951 for the Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board has been welcomed by local politicians this week.

The funding is part of a nationwide distribution of €5.8 million under the Mitigating against Educational Disadvantage Fund and will go towards supporting access to community education through local organisations.

It aims to increase the participation of disadvantaged learners, particularly with the digital infrastructure including providing devices and software and increasing their capacity to deliver online learning.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy says the Covid-19 pandemic has further highlighted “gross levels of inequality” in education.

“Many families were struggling to all operate on one laptop or none at all while others had broadband connectivity problems which placed students trying to learn remotely at a distinct disadvantage. So many people around the country also have problems with numeracy and literacy and this funding will help support access to community education,” said Senator Murphy.

Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan said the fund would help local, community providers through the tried and tested structures of the GRETB. “I commend Minister Simon Harris for securing this funding and enhancing supports for adult learners during Covid-19. By supporting course providers and by securing equipment, such as laptops and other devices, as well as educational software, we can help encourage people to re-engage with education, gain new skills and grasp new opportunities,” she said.

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Social Protection Claire Kerrane TD has said the Government cannot continue to abandon people struggling to pay their heating and electricity bills.

Speaking this week, Deputy Kerrane said: “This week, particularly poor weather is expected across Ireland, with temperatures set to plummet and snow expected in many areas.

“For many workers and families that already under huge financial pressure, this will mean they will struggle yet again to pay for electricity and heating bills as they try to keep warm.

“Last week, I brought a motion to the Dáil attempting to compel the Government to support workers and families struggling with their heating and electricity bills. Shockingly, Government TDs from across Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Greens opposed this and refused to give these supports.

“The Government cannot keep ignoring this issue and abandoning those in desperate need of support.

I am urging the Government to come forward with a plan to help these workers and families. This plan needs to go beyond the only offering by Government to date, which is seeking support through the Community Welfare Officer. This is not enough”.

‘AIB Together’ supporting local community causes AIB branches across Roscommon have donated over €2,000 to local causes during the last year as part of ‘AIB Together’, the bank’s community investment programme. Money was raised for local causes including Mayo/Roscommon Hospice and Creggs NS Sunshine Class.

In addition to the money raised for local causes, on a national level AIB commit-

ted €2.4m to Trinity College Dublin’s dedicated Covid-19 Research Hub to urgently accelerate the college’s immunology project.

The bank also launched the ‘AIB Together Fund’ to further support communities impacted by the Covid-19 crisis.

This allowed staff to donate directly into a dedicated fund, which the bank then matched, helping raise over €422,000

for the bank’s long-standing community partners FoodCloud and Soar, as well as Alone and Pieta House. The bank also established a fund of €200,000, which allowed branches to donate directly to vulnerable groups in the community that were impacted by the pandemic.

This has brought the total amount donated by the bank and its staff to causes in sup-

port of Covid-19 to over €3 million. This money helped support the vital work these charities and organisations do and the vulnerable groups they support in the community.

lation of the majority of their fundraising events. Remote working and cyber attacks are ‘biggest data protection threats’ Remote working and the threat of cyber attacks are the number one data protection concern for 65% of Irish companies in 2021. This is according to a new survey from the Association of Compliance Officers Ireland (ACOI), which sought to understand the current data protection risks facing companies – 85% of whom have more than 75% of their workforce currently working from home. The survey of more than 250 organisations – answered by ACOI members with responsibility for compliance in financial organisations throughout the country – revealed that the mobile workforce arrangements, necessitated by the pandemic since last year, have left employers feeling increasingly vulnerable to data protection breaches.

Speaking of the findings, Michael Kavanagh (CEO of ACOI) said: “It’s abundantly apparent from this survey that remote working is a major issue facing

firms this year when it comes to data protection, with 34% of businesses voicing their concerns around the risks associated with it.

“Given how intertwined the two things are, it is perhaps unsurprising that risk of cyber attack was cited by 31% of respondents as their biggest concern. Indeed, the two are not mutually exclusive, with remote working increasing organisations’ vulnerability to attacks.

“85% of our respondents have more than 75% of their workforce out of the office at the moment, and while the survey suggests that the remote working landscape will certainly not look the same in twelve months, it is clear that the intricacies of having a national mobile workforce is something that all organisations will have to consider, both now and into the future, as flexibility around where people carry out their various roles becomes a key feature of modern-day business”.

“The preferential treatment of radio over local print media by the Minister needs to be equalised,” remarked Senator Cassells. “We need the same support for our local papers, or quite frankly they’ll be gone, and with them the coverage of local news and sport in towns right across Ireland”. Commenting on the need for support for local papers, Senator Cassells pointed out that 91% of advertising revenue for provincial papers comes from local businesses in their areas and the impact on their revenue streams during lockdown has been devastating.

“Support from the Minister needs to be provided urgently in order to address this or we will be extending condolences in a few months on their demise”.

‘Summary Rescue Process’ for small and micro companies

Rethinking Rural Ireland (RRI) empowers towns and villages in rural Ireland to regroup, rebrand and relaunch through innovative projects.

The social enterprise, which is already working with two small towns in County Roscommon, motivates and refocuses committees to help them develop innovative project ideas suited to their community’s needs and resources.

In relation to project funding, RRI helps communities source grants, write grant applications and effectively allocate funds. RRI also

“Through forward thinking, community-led solutions, we want to bring hope and motivation back to rural towns and villages”, commented Mr. Cogan.

We work with communities to help them develop and fund innovative projects, and we devise creative ways to help them re-brand their areas in order to give them a fresh identity”.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has welcomed the launch of a public consultation seeking views on the proposed ‘Summary Rescue Process’, by Minister for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation, Robert Troy.

The process is a restructuring framework suitable for the rescue of small and micro companies, to inform the development of the General Scheme of the Bill.

In keeping with commitments in the Programme for Government, it is proposed provision is made for a stand-alone process outside existing frameworks for the rescue of small companies.

Senator Murphy said: “This consultation is an extremely important phase in the development of the Summary Rescue Process. So many companies are struggling with the continued impact of Covid-19. The associated costs of examinership are beyond the reach of our small and micro enterprises and act as a barrier to access and this needs to be addressed.

“Some local businesses like local grocery shops or newsagents, cafes and hairdressers will play a very important role in our country’s economic recovery after Covid and the Government is committed to their viability”.

The Summary Rescue Process would be designed for ‘small’ and micro companies (as defined by the Companies Act 2014), which represent 98% of companies in Ireland.

It would be commenced by resolution of directors rather than by application to court and be overseen and assisted by insolvency practitioners.

It would also be provided that the rescue plan be passed by a simple majority in value of creditors and it would not require application to court for approval of rescue plan.

It is envisaged that this process will reduce the associated costs and regulatory burden for ease of access for small companies while also maintaining appropriate safeguards for creditors.

As we approach the First Anniversary of the passing of Liam Bracken, his children Teresa, James, Tim and Mike and their families would like to acknowledge the many people who provided them with emotional and practical support and those who helped in any way during Liam’s illness, at the time of his death and since his passing.

Your contribution and presence have made our loss more bearable.

Liam was cared for in his home in Grange until his death and this would not have been possible without a lot of help and assistance from many people. There were frequent visits from relatives, dear friends and good neighbours who kept him company and had a cup of tea and a chat with him, which Liam loved. We were blessed to have had fabulous carers – Danielle, Laarni, Ollie, Mary and especially Orla who were so kind and mindful of Liam’s needs. RSG Derrane were a great help to us with the provision of care in Liam’s home. Thanks to the wonderful Dr. O’Mara and all the staff in RUH for the empathy, kindness and great care they took of Liam through his illness and for the support and advice that they gave to our family during that time. Thanks also to the staff of the centres in the Sacred Heart Hospital and in Cuan Mhuire Western Alzheimer’s Centre Kilbride for the time and attention they gave to Liam when he attended their day services. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to Dr. Keenan, Dr. Quinn and the staff in St. Coman’s Medical Centre for the many years of care and treatment they gave to Liam. They went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure he got the best medical care possible. Thanks also to David and the staff in Hynes Pharmacy who were always friendly and helpful. The family are so grateful to a number of excellent health professionals who assisted us with support, advice and encouragement and in particular we want to mention Tricia and Abiola from the POLL service, the public health nurses, Vanessa the RUH speech and language therapist, the Palliative Care staff and the night nurses.

We want to thank the huge number of people who travelled long distances, came to the house, went to his removal and attended his Funeral Mass and burial. We received many messages, cards, donations to Western Alzheimer’s, phone calls and gestures of kindness, for which we are so grateful as it gave us immense support. There were lovely stories and memories shared about Liam and it has given us great solace in his loss. We are blessed with our extended family, friends and neighbours who were so good to our family and for this kindness, support and care we are indebted to you all.

Thank you to Tom and Pat Smyth, the undertakers, for the thoughtful, dignified and professional manner in which they handled and carried out all of the funeral arrangements. Thanks to the gravediggers, the altar servers and Enya Reilly for the music. We want to acknowledge the incredible spiritual support of our beloved parish priest, the late Fr. Raymond Browne RIP, who was a tower of strength to all our family and in particular to Liam with his regular visits, the time he spent praying with him and for the beautiful ceremony that he conducted for Liam’s Funeral Mass. We are so very grateful to him posthumously. Fr. Browne RIP was accompanied by Deacon Seamus Talbot, Monsignor Travers, Fr. Milton, Fr. Conaty and Fr. McLoughlin at the Mass and burial and for their presence and contribution we are very thankful. Thanks to the brancardiers, colleagues and friends of Liam’s for over thirty-five years on the annual pilgrimage to Lourdes, who carried him into the church for his Funeral Mass. It was a really special gesture and was much appreciated by the family.

A big thank you to Kilbride GAA club, the GAA Connacht Council, the Lourdes Invalid Diocesan Pilgrimage Committee and the Convent of Mercy Camogie Team for the Guards of Honour. Your presence and acknowledgement of his contribution to these groups and sport was a great comfort to the family and he would have been so proud.

Thanks also must go to Liam McNeill, Sean and Bernie Mulry, the Abbey Hotel and many good neighbours, family and friends who provided food, refreshments and help on the days before and directly after the funeral.

Liam’s funeral took place just a few weeks before the first lockdown in March and we were lucky to be able to celebrate his life in the way we did. Liam left this earthly world on St. Valentine’s Day and went to join his one true love, Alice, in their place of eternal rest just seven months after she had passed away. We are sure they are happy and at peace now - together again.

It is impossible to thank everybody individually and we hope that this acknowledgement conveys our sincere thanks and gratitude.

Liam’s First Anniversary Mass takes place in St. Brigid’s Church, Four-MileHouse on Sunday, 14th February at 11am. Due to Covid-19 restrictions attendance is not possible but it will be broadcast on 95fm.

GAA off until Easter! < DAN DOONER

The GAA has once again been forced to delay the resumption of inter-county action following a meeting of the association’s Covid Advisory Committee yesterday evening.

The meeting followed talks between GAA officials and the Government earlier in the week, where it was made clear that under current restrictions there was no clearance for inter-county games to resume.

GAA officials had sought clarity on inter-county activity after clearance was given during previous the Level 5 lockdown last year.

Briefing counties last night, the GAA confirmed that it would be at least Easter before any training or games could take place.

At the time of going to print, no decision had been taken on what competitions may or may not be facilitated in any revised fixture programme.

It was previously thought that there would be a four-week training period prior to the resumption of games which would suggest that National League games, should they go ahead, will now be delayed until late April at the earliest.

TG4 features Dermot Earley Junior tonight Tonight (Thursday) the popular TG4 series Laochra Gael will have plenty of Roscommon interest once again, with Dermot Earley Junior the subject of the programme.

Dermot was one of the most prominent players on the Kildare team that went down to Galway in the 1998 All-Ireland final (when he was just 19 years old), and the show outlines his determination to make a name for himself in the shadow of his late father.

On the programme, Dermot talks about his football career, his many injury problems, his battle with cancer, and the untimely death of his legendary father in 2010. The programme will be broadcast tonight at 9.30 pm.

Thank God – and Sky – for sport.

During Lockdown 1, we were bereft, live sport, to our horror, a high profile casualty of Covid.

Seriously! How fortunate are we now? Cast your mind back to last April/summer…when many sports fans were really grateful for re-runs of soccer matches from the Jack Charlton glory days, world snooker flashbacks from the BBC, and classic GAA encounters from BC (before Cluxton).

Close to a year on, and with All-Ireland Championships almost miraculously salvaged (respect here for the misfortune that visited Sligo footballers), the fact that live (professional) sport continues to escape Covid’s shadow is a huge positive in what are extremely trying times.

I wouldn’t dream of suggesting that all is well on the sports’ front. Events are still spectator-less, the atmosphere has suffered accordingly, amateur sport is in lockdown, and financial clouds aren’t so much hovering as descending with menace.

Still, what joy and respite and distraction the ongoing sport has brought. Think back to those awful weekends of last summer, when nothingness reigned.

Last Sunday, especially when you factor in that it’s early February and not summer, was one very special day of sport.

We want our sport to be competitive and entertaining, but we love some drama too. And Sunday did not let us down. From Peter O’Mahony’s disastrous sending off for Ireland in Cardiff, to Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson’s catastrophic gift-wrapping of three vital Premier League points for arch-rivals Manchester City, it was a riveting day’s TV viewing. Later, there was yet another stunning and time-defying Super Bowl triumph for Tom Brady, preceded a few hours earlier by a classic finale to the Waste Management Phoenix Open. This golfing shoot-out was considerably more exciting than the name of the competition suggests. And, in a significant move that was almost emotional, the golfing elite actually had a real live audience, with about 5,000 spectators allowed to attend.

Given the hype that surrounds the Irish rugby team (and the status of the annual competition), their Six Nations clash with Wales was probably the main course (for Irish consumers at least) on this inviting menu. We’re never really sure what to expect from Ireland. Briefly ranked top team in the world a few years ago, we’ve sadly mastered underachieving in World Cups. Happily, there have been some very successful Six Nations’ campaigns this century, and while a Golden Generation may have mostly moved into retirement by now, we’re still immersed somewhere in a Golden Age. Small margins can make big differences in rugby. On Sunday, the loss of O’Mahony – deservedly red-carded after a rash and dangerous challenge – was, on the face of it, a disaster for Ireland. Yet the team responded heroically, dominating the second quarter, and finishing strongly after Wales took control in the third quarter.

It’s tempting to presume that Ireland would have won had it not been for O’Mahony’s rush of blood. But who can say what would have happened? Teams often find some extraordinary inner strength when they are down a player. Ireland certainly left everything on that magnificent Cardiff pitch on Sunday. They might have won it too, had Billy Burns’ last-gasp penalty found touch (and delivered a dream attacking position). Burns’ error and O’Mahony’s folly attracted much commentary on social media. After the disappointment of Ireland’s defeat, it was over to Sky Sports for Liverpool v Manchester City.

I enjoyed the golf, won by Brooks Koepka, with 53-year-old Steve Stricker rolling back the years with a sensational joint fourth placing (on 17 under par). The tournament was notable too for a welcome return to form by Jordan Spieth, a player who once threatened to rule the game.

Intrigued by all the publicity that surrounds it, I finally stayed up to watch a Super Bowl. The actual sport doesn’t appeal that much to me yet, but I obviously respect how huge it is. There were more interruptions/stoppages than in a Ryan Tubridy interview with a top politician. I think I enjoyed the analysis (on Sky, occasionally switching to BBC) more than the action. Super Bowl 2021 was yet another epic chapter in the amazing story titled ‘Tom Brady’.

Now aged 43, the quarterback that Carlsberg would be focussed on if they were in this business, just keeps setting mind-blowing new standards.

By 3 am, it was time for me to concede to tiredness. It had been a wonderful day of TV sport, a memorable marathon…a resounding, spectacular and joyous victory for competitive, thrilling and entertaining combat, over…well, misery. Tough days mischieviously infiltrated…by one big, exuberant and somewhat madcap Happy Day. There will be more of them. A great sporting Sunday. I’m suggesting we go with a scoreline of Sport 4 Covid 0, and pandemic-defying high fives all round.

The racing in Ireland today is in the south at Thurles away at 1.45 pm. Tomorrow racing takes place on the all-weather Polytrack surface in Dundalk, first race at 4.30 pm.

Saturday and Sunday sees racing in Co. Kildare with Naas on Saturday away at 1.05 pm and Punchestown at 2 pm on Sunday.

Today's meeting at Thurles is subject to an early morning inspection due to the threat of snow, with officials set to check the County Tipperary venue at 7.30 am. TG4 will cover five races live on Sunday, starting with the 3 pm race. The feature race the Grade B Punchestown Grand National Trial Handicap Chase is on at 4.30 pm.

Racing Review It was Willie Mullins' 9 The Rest 6 as Closutton swept the boards at the Leopardstown Dublin Racing Festival last weekend.

On Saturday, Mullins and stable jockey Paul Townend won the first three races with Gaillard Du Mensil, Chacun Pour Soi, and Energumene, all Grade 1 races and all were favourites. Son Patrick was aboard Kilcruit in the Grade 2 bumper making it a four timer and again it was favourite. In this race, Sean Mulryan’s Whatdeawant finished third at 25/1, a nice e/w suggestion last week.

But the performance of the meeting was in the fourth Grade 1 race as the super mare Honeysuckle, beat Abacradras and Sharjah by 10l and 9l. Rachel Blackmore never looked in danger on Henry de Bromhead’s mare as she swept a class field aside with easily her best performance in extending her unbeaten record to 11.

Looking forward to the Champion Hurdle in Prestbury Park which will be some race between herself and defending champion, the English mare Epatante. Claimer Simon Torrens had a riding double in the handicaps with A Wave Of The Sea for Joseph O’Brien in the chase and Drop The Anchor for Pat Fahy in the hurdle.

Mullins followed up on Sunday with an even better five-timer as Appreciate It, Monkfish both ridden by Townend, and Kemboy ridden by nephew Danny won three of the four Grade 1 races on offer. THE GAIN LINE Creggs RFC Report Creggs Rugby Club gets ‘green’ light for complex

Creggs Rugby Club has received planning permission to build a sports complex at their grounds (The Green) in Creggs. The plan will see the construction of a sports building with a large gym, four dressing rooms, clubrooms and toilet facilities.

The club was also been granted retention of the 4G playing pitch, spectator stand and floodlighting on the grounds. Another unique aspect to this development will be dressing rooms, specifically for the women’s game, in line with their club charter.

These will have individual cubicle showers.

Planners have attached eleven conditions, as part of the planning permission. One of these will involve cowling the floodlights and directing them onto the all-weather surface 4G pitch. Development works are to be carried out between 8 am and 7 pm Monday to Friday and between 8 am and 5 pm on Saturdays.

It is expected that the project will take two years to complete.

Down to the final four!

The quarter-finals of the Roscommon Online Darts League took place last Friday night and featured top class performances from the county’s best players.

Two of the games went down to a deciding leg, with Paul Carton and David Doherty playing out an absolute thriller. There were 31 scores of 100+ between the two players over the eleven legs, including five 140s and two maximums for Carton. Doherty had a top finish on the night of 160 and hit a 16-dart leg, but it just wasn’t enough as Carton ran out the 6-5 winner.

Martin Fleming and Matty Connelly were involved in a similarly tight game, which featured 21 100+ scores along with five 140s.

Fleming hit two maximums along with 110 and 113 finishes and a 15-dart leg, while Connelly had a 17-darter and a 111 finish. It was Fleming who prevailed, however, to take a 6-5 victory.

Sean Fleming and Daniel McDermott both performed well in their match. There were 21 scores of 100+ between them as well as three 140s with McDermott hitting a 180 and a 13dart leg and Fleming contributing a 15-darter.

It was Fleming who earned his place in the last four, though the 6-2 scoreline was slightly flattering.

The final quarter-final was between David Concannon and Gary Concannon and featured 14 100+ scores and five 140s. David won on a scoreline of 6-0 however, and he will now face the in-form Martin Fleming in their semi-final this Friday.
