My partner and I have lived together for the past two years. I own the house where we live. My partner recently told me that he made a will and he is leaving his entire estate to me. He is not particularly wealthy but I understand he has a large life insurance policy.

I don’t want to sound ungrateful but if my partner passed away would I be left with a very large inheritance tax bill?

A person is entitled to receive a gift or inheritance up to a certain value without being liable for inheritance tax which is also known as Capital Acquisition Tax. The amount of tax payable depends on the amount of the gift or inheritance and the relationship between the parties. For tax purposes the relationships are categorised into three different groups namely Group A, B and C. Group A applies where the beneficiary i.e. the person receiving the gift or inheritance is a child of the person giving that gift or inheritance (disponer).

This includes a stepchild and an adopted child. It may also include a parent, foster child, and a favourite niece or nephew in certain limited circumstances.

Group B applies where the beneficiary is a grandparent, grandchild, great-grandchild, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, nephew or niece of the disponer. A parent who does not qualify under Group A will fall into Group B. Group C applies to any relationship not included in Group A or Group B. The amount that can be received tax free is known as the threshold. The current threshold for Group A is €335,000, Group B is €32,500 and Group C is €16,250. A gift or inheritance up to the threshold amount does not attract Capital Acquisition Tax. A gift or inheritance above the threshold amount will attract tax of 33% on that amount in excess of the threshold.

If you receive a gift or inheritance from your spouse or civil partner, you are exempt from Capital Acquisitions Tax. Unfortunately, the same exemption does not apply to partners living together. Therefore, if you are living with someone and not married or in a civil partnership then you will only be able to inherit up to €16,250 from your partner tax-free. The remainder will be taxed at 33%.

With the support of the Diocese of Elphin, the Father Flanagan Group has completed the renovation of the presbytery in Ballymoe to become the diocesan and national focal point for commemoration of Father Flanagan in Ireland, where visitors can learn about his life and mission.

The renovation work, costing approximately €70,000, commenced in 2021 with funding for the project obtained through donations, from the Diocese of Elphin, as well as very generous sponsorship moe. The garden is carefully laid out to reflect the life and work of Father Flanagan.

From a family of eleven, Edward Flanagan emigrated from Ballymoe to America with his sister Nellie, sailing out of Queenstown in Cork on the S.S. Celtic and arrived at Ellis Island, New York on August 27th 1904. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Omaha

on July 26th, 1912.

Often described as Ireland’s greatest gift to America, his life story was made famous by the Hollywood film ‘Boys Town’ starring Spencer Tracey and Mickey Rooney in 1938. The film won Spencer Tracey an Oscar for his portrayal of Father Flanagan. Upon receiving the Oscar, he gifted it to Father Flanagan at Boys Town, where it remains today.

Father Flanagan was also a close confidante of US President Harry Truman.

He undertook several foreign missions on behalf of the US Government, to highlight the plight of displaced and abandoned children in Japan and Europe after World War II. It was on one such foreign

Presidential mission in Germany in 1948 that he died. He is buried in Boys Town, and his tomb there receives thousands of visitors annually.

The cause for the Canonisation of Father Flanagan was opened in 2015 by the Father Flanagan League in Omaha and is currently with the Vatican. He has the title of Servant of God Edward J Flanagan. Recently, Father Flanagan has been included in the primary school religious education programme, ‘Grow in Love’ as a Christian Hero under the social justice lesson for 6th Class.

A delegation is expected to arrive in Ballymoe from Omaha as many Nebraskans will be in Ireland this month to see their football team, the Nebraska Huskers, play in the Aviva stadium, and some will take the opportunity to visit Father Flanagan’s home village of Ballymoe during their trip.

All are welcome to join the celebrations in Ballymoe on Sunday, August 21st. The Father Flanagan Visitor Centre will be open from 11 am to 2 pm, Monday 22nd – Saturday 27th August.

Participants can learn more about the ecology, wildlife and biodiversity of local streams, rivers, loughs and wetlands while also gaining some practical and hands-on engagement.

Ken Whelan and Jackie Hunt will be on hand to introduce you to the fascinating ecology and wildlife of the rivers, streams and loughs found along the River Suck.

The course will be held this Saturday (August 13th) from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm, and on Sunday, August 14th from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm.

Ballintubber Castle Conservation Project formally launched Fine Gael Deputy Michael Ring, Roscommon Councillor Anthony Waldron and castle owner Pyers O’Conor Nash were at Ballintubber Castle last week to formally launch the castle conservation project and traditional skills programme funded by Roscommon County Council, The Heritage Council and the National Monuments Service.

Over 75 people attended the launch of the project and heard from historians, archaeologists, conservation experts and heritage consultants involved in the conservation programme about how it will benefit and restore parts of Ballintubber Castle.

Cllr. Waldron led the extensive efforts made by the Ballintubber Heritage Group to secure funding for the restoration of Ballintubber Castle and was delighted with the success of the launch.

He said: “It has been years in the making and we are very happy for Ballintubber, for Roscommon and indeed the country. It is in the national interest that we protect such a wonderful castle and make it accessible once again for the public to enjoy”.

In the afternoon, discussions focused on the restoration work already carried out by specialists Cunningham & Marine

of Westport on the south-west tower. Details and methodology of removing invasive ivy and repointing walls with traditional lime mortar were shared with the participants, as well as potential future works required to make safe and maintain the 14th century Castle walls.

As part of the launch event, the Heritage Council sponsored a Traditional Skills Course at the Castle and over 45 participants learned techniques used by medieval craftsman to build the stone wall structures.

Lime pointing and ancient masonry tools were ably demonstrated by Master Plasterer and Heritage Mason Damien Condon from Calx Restorations and Edward Byrne from the Traditional Lime Company discussed the merits of using lime for mortar and how the ancient lime kilns were once operated.

After a full day of expert talks and demonstrations of traditional building methods and conservation techniques for protecting medieval structures like Ballintubber Castle, the Traditional Skills course participants were presented with a certificate of attendance by Cllr. Waldron and organizer Chris Southgate of conservation specialists Southgate & Associates.

50th Roscommon Show officially launched < DAN DOONER

There was a good turnout for the launch of the 50th Roscommon Agricultural Show last Thursday evening at Hannon’s Hotel ahead of the big day at Hannon’s field on Saturday, August 20th.

Honorary President Christy Tully said the show had survived many challenges since 1970 and said there would be no show without hardworking volunteers and loyal sponsors.

Chairperson of Roscommon Industrial and Agricultural Society, Damien Hannon, also paid tribute to the show’s hardworking committee as well as loyal sponsors.

Mr. Hannon also emphasised the need for younger generations to get involved in the agricultural show.

“Unless we get the younger people involved we are going to fail,” he said.

He also thanked the Irish Shows Association, An Garda Síochána, Roscommon Civil Defence, Roscommon County Council, Roscommon Leader Partnership, the Local Enterprise Office, and ASI. Detailing this year’s horse section, Mr. Tully highlighted the All-Ireland Yearling Filly Championship and the €2,000 prize on offer. This year’s horse section also features three new classes including the Irish Draught Foal Championship, the Quality Filly Foal and the Quality Colt Foal.

The pony section features a combination of in-hand and ridden classes with the John Mooney Perpetual Cup up for grabs for the ridden championship and the Don Dalton Cup on offer for the in-hand classes.

Head of the cattle section, James Gleeson, highlighted classes for pedigree and non-pedigree cattle as well as handling and stockperson classes.

Pat Naughton told those present that the sheep section this year would feature 31 classes while there are three goat classes while Oliver Flanagan highlighted the seven classes on offer in the fowl section.

This year’s show will also include the usual classes for poultry, pets, farm and garden produce as well as arts and crafts, photography, the ever popular dog show and a Local Enterprise marquee for small local businesses.

Founding member and guest speaker on the night, John O’Beirne, shared fond memories of some of the thrills and spills he experienced during previous shows and said Roscommon had the best cattle in the country.

Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council Tom Crosby, Pat Leonard of Roscommon IFA, and Mark Donnelly of Roscommon Mart congratulated the committee on reaching such an important milestone and wished all concerned continued success.

A minute’s silence was observed last Thursday for deceased committee members Irene Hanlon, Annette Tully, and Gerry Hanlon, who have passed away since the 50th Anniversary show was Roscommon last held in Au- Agricultural Show 2022 gust 2019.

Tánaiste to visit Roscommon today (Thursday)

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar will visit Roscommon town this afternoon (Thursday), where he will officially open local Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan’s office on the Square.

The Fine Gael leader is expected to address the media on the new-look Square following the opening.

Workers still waiting on pandemic payments – Kerrane Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has called on Taoiseach Micheál Martin to directly intervene to ensure that frontline workers receive the pandemic bonus payment which was signed off on by Cabinet nine months ago.

“It has now been more than nine months since the Cabinet signed off on a pandemic bonus payment for frontline health staff. Despite this, many workers still have not received this payment that they were promised,” she said.

“Frontline workers in Roscommon and Galway have been let down badly by this government’s failure to follow through on their promises.

“This is absolutely unacceptable.

Sinn Féin’s Health spokesperson David Cullinane has written to the Taoiseach this week, urging him to intervene directly to ensure this payment is paid promptly. The Taoiseach needs to get a grip on this issue, so that

this disrespect to frontline health staff ends”.

Murphy: ‘Retailers facing energy crisis’

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has warned that a number of retail supermarket owners now have serious concerns regarding rising electricity costs.

Speaking this week, Senator Murphy said a number of local retailers had been in contact with him in recent weeks.

“In some cases where an average size supermarket was paying €8,000 per

bill, that has now almost doubled to €15,000 and if this energy crisis was to continue they would end up with an annual bill of over €180,000. This will not be sustainable on an ongoing basis,” he said.

Senator Murphy called on the Government to offer some sort of concessions to retailers and also encouraged businesses to consider erecting solar panels to offset costs.

has this week announced funding of €23,000 for 14 walking trails in County Roscommon as part of a €1 million allocation nationally.

Welcoming the news, Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan said: “The community groups can use this funding to maintain, improve and promote its use to locals and visitors. This vital work is done by the groups which are known as Community Trail Management Organisations.

“I really look forward to the work being done on the Roscommon side of Shannonbridge all around the fortifications there which date back to Napoleonic times. These walks will be a boost to local community and tourism in the area and also great to have a café and craft shop open at the Fort. Well done to the Shannonbridge Action Group and volunteers here.

“The Cloonfad Scenic Walks group have received funding for seven sections of the walking route in the area which will very much assist with maintenance. And well down to Ballintubber Tidy Towns and Enterprise Kiltullagh for successful applications for walks in their local area. The National Famine Way and the Miners Way will also receive funding”.

Local Minister of State Frank Feighan also welcomed the news and said Leitrim groups would receive €14,600 while €2,000 had been allocated to Sligo.

Mourners hear of ‘special bond’ between siblings who tragically drowned in Kerry

newsbriefs Tulsk History Society Open Day Tulsk History Society are holding an open day for National Heritage Week, on Sunday, August 21st, from 12.30 pm to 5 pm.

The events taking place as part of the open day include the unveiling of Tulsk Cemetery Information Panel, the official opening of the society’s new office (including library and archives), the launch of the Tulsk Morning Howl bulletin, and the opening of the Tulsk Macra na Feirme History Exhibition. There will be traditional music performed at the Macra Hall on the day by local musicians, as well as tea and coffee. The event is open invite, and it is hoped there will be a good attendance.

Tulsk History Society (THS) continues to work on larger projects, with a significant outdoor refurbishment project due to begin in the forthcoming autumn season – more information to follow soon.

THS is now accepting and encouraging new articles for the September e-newsletter. The new, printed paper bulletin will be available for free pick-up locally, and has been named ‘The Tulsk Morning Howl’ after the newsletter that Percy French ‘edited’ as a youth (with contributions from his sisters and cousins).

Approximately 150 years after those early days in Cloonyquinn, THS is proud to resurrect the old title, which will now consist of old newspaper reports, and just a few interesting facts from the history of the parish!

Graveyard masses in Kileenan and Ardcarne Mass will be celebrated in Kileenan Graveyard, Knockvicar, on Saturday, August 20th, at 3 pm. Mass in Ardcarne Graveyard will be celebrated on Sunday, August 21st, at 12 noon.

There will be a collection taken up in Ardcarne car park.

The proceeds of this collection will go towards the cost of lighting of Ardcarne Church and Graveyard.

The funeral of the brother and sister who tragically drowned last week in County Kerry heard how they loved their adventures together and that they had a special bond.

Lecarrow man, Dessie Byrne (50) and his sister Muriel Eriksson (62) lost their lives after getting into difficulty in the water on Thursday evening last. Both were originally from Baylough, Athlone and had been holidaying in the Ballybunion area when the tragedy happened.

Mr. Byrne had been living in Lecarrow for a number of years with his family while Mrs. Eriksson was home on holidays from Malmo in Sweden where she lived with her family.

There was an outpouring of grief in the communities of Athlone and Lecarrow following the tragedy as Taoiseach Micheál Martin and a number of local public representatives led tributes to Dessie and Muriel.

The joint funeral mass took place at St. John’s Church in Lecarrow on Tuesday where the Lecarrow Lazers Cycling Club took part in a guard of honour which also included a local vintage car club. A motorcycle cortege had accompanied both hearses to the church.

Prior to the mass, a montage of pictures of both siblings was streamed online depicting the happy times they had shared with family and friends.

Parish Priest Fr. Ray Milton said Dessie and Muriel were the youngest and eldest siblings in the Byrne family, and that they “had been close in life, died together, and we pray they will be reunited in heaven”.

Describing Dessie and Muriel as generous and giving people who had lived life to the full, Fr. Milton said there had been shock and disbelief when news of the tragedy filtered through and that the community’s hearts went out to their families.

Photos of Dessie and Muriel were brought to the altar during the offertory procession along with a cycling jersey and miniature vintage car.

Moving tributes were paid by their nephew Keith Byrne, Muriel’s son John, and one of Dessie’s sons, Dean.

Keith Byrne told mourners that Dessie was his partner Paulette’s soulmate for 24 years and that his sons, Dean and Josh, were “his whole life, his entire universe”.

He described how Dessie had loved his adventures with Muriel and how they had a special bond.

He thanked the emergency services and staff at University Hospital Kerry for the love and care, particularly to Dessie’s son, Josh.

Muriel’s son, John, said his mother was the “most loving, caring person” he had ever met, adding: “much like her mother, Una, the best thing she knew was kids”.

Dessie’s son Dean told the congregation that his father was a great man and that they did everything together.

“He was always out somewhere at a show or car boot sale bringing me and Josh with him for the spin in his blue van,” he said.

He thanked the community for their love and support and Dessie Byrne, RIP. concluded by saying: “It’s sad enough losing your dad, but it’s so much worse when you not only lose your dad but your aunt.

“I haven’t been able to fully grieve for Muriel yet, and it hasn’t fully sunk in that she’s gone. I’ll miss being handed the phone and seeing her big smile on Facetime asking me about school and work”.

Mr. Byrne was laid to rest in the local cemetery while Mrs. Eriksson’s cremation took place yesterday (Wednesday) at Lakelands Crematorium in Cavan.

Successful Tractor/Vintage run for a heartfelt cause in Loughglynn

There was a large turnout in Loughglynn recently for a Tractor/Vintage/ Bike Run in aid of the Heart and Lung Transplant in the Mater Hospital.

The worthy cause had a special local connection as one of the organisers, James Creaton, underwent a heart transplant operation in late 2020.

James’ wife, Kathleen, said the Creatons were blown away by the level of support they received.

“It was a great success…we never expected it and we are overwhelmed by the support,” she said.

“A group of local people came together to organise the event and we decided to do it for charity. James had a very successful heart transplant at the end of 2020 so the Heart and Lung Transplant Unit at the Mater Hospital was the chosen charity”.

All-flat card for Roscommon Races on Monday Despite the poor weather, Roscommon Racecourse was rewarded again with another large crowd and some great action for the last fixture on August 2nd, and action resumes on Monday evening (August 15th) with an all-flat card.

Monday is Londis Roscommon Family Evening, and we are putting on plenty of free entertainment for families and our younger racing fans to include Toy Ride Carousel, Inflatable Basketball, Inflatable Hoopla and Face Painting.

The recent rain was welcome and with some parts of the country experiencing extremely dry conditions, last week’s rain has been a huge help for our racing surface.

We have two 2-year-old races here next week, and we hope to attract some good horses to compete at Roscommon.

Helvic Dream, a Group 1 winner at The Curragh last year for Noel Meade, won at Roscommon in 2019, before going on to better things and we are expecting all the major flat yards will be represented here at our next fixture.

Have the GAA fouled the ball on OAP tickets?

Our man Frank on GAA ticket prices, the dangers of bargain hunting, and a victorious Irish visit to Martha’s Vineyard…

A few years ago when I reached the ripe old age of sixty-six and qualified for the Old Age Pension, I have to admit that I had pretty mixed emotions. On the one hand, I was proud to have made it that far against all the odds, while on the other hand I realised that being an OAP meant exactly what it said on the tin, and I was now officially branded as an old man. And yet there were, and still are, loads of little perks; like the free travel, and from seventy onwards, free TV licences, and for a while the GAA made allowances for our advanced years and we got half price admission to local championship matches and a €10 reduction on the price of intercounty games.

I have to say that I got great delight arriving into our Creggs matches and producing my spanking new pension card, and even though it was only saving a fiver (usually it’s €10 admission into local intermediate championship games), I used to think that it was the GAA’s way of thanking all of us old age pensioners for a lifetime of service to the very popular organisation. And so I feel very let down and even a bit cheated that the GAA have

done away with our half price reductions.

For all the club championship matches that took place all around the country at the weekend, the only ones that were offered reduced admission were under 16s, with no mention of us older folk. Now you might say that it’s a small thing, but when you consider all the OAPs who would have gone to see their local clubs play last weekend, it represents quite a big saving for an already very wealthy organisation at the expense of the most vulnerable section of our society.

The other thing that annoys me is that, unless you wanted to go to watch a few matches, you had to go online to book your tickets. If you wanted to go to more than one match you could buy tickets with cash at the various County Board offices last Thursday afternoon. Once again the OAPs are the section of society who have the most difficulty going online and a lot of them, particularly those who live on their own, might have to stay at home rather than going to the match and supporting their local club, simply because they cannot work the online booking system.

On Saturday night I met a man of similar vintage as myself, who told me he played club football until he was 40-years-old and he was very annoyed at the experience he had when he went along to see his own club (not Creggs) play over the weekend.

He didn’t know he was supposed to have booked online and when he arrived at the grounds with cash in hand he was told that

sadly he couldn’t come in. I won’t say what match he was at, as a kind official actually let him in, but he told me he was embarrassed, upset and annoyed by his experience and he won’t be going to any more of his club’s games.

We all realise that everything is going cashless and obviously the GAA is also going that way, and from a security point of view maybe rightly so, but surely it would be possible to have a specific area at all club matches where people like me who may not be tech proficient could show our pension cards, keep our half price perks and pay by cash. I don’t think it would be asking too much and it would show the most powerful sporting organisation in the country still values all of those older folk who have supported it for many, many years.

As it happened I coughed up my €10 after my young lad did the online booking for me, and I attended a really good game between St. Croan’s and Creggs on Saturday evening, played on the super new pitch they have down there in Ballintubber, a development that is a credit to everyone involved in the rural club. A draw was a fair result and I would think both clubs would be happy enough to have escaped with a point apiece. Each will realise that while they could have won the game, they could just as easily have lost it, so a draw left both of them still in the hunt for quarter final qualification, and looking forward to the next round in two weeks’ time.

Buyer beware of so-called ‘bargains’…

I am a sucker for a bargain and there is no doubt that my defences go down any time I see a sale sticker on anything, but it is no surprise all the special offers we see in our supermarkets may not be as special as we are led to believe.

Santis O’Garro, a budgeting expert, says we tend to forget that supermarkets are businesses whose job is to make money and their special offers are all part of the bigger picture. Apparently they carry out research to find out what triggers the consumer to spend extra money and in a lot of cases we end up buying stuff we didn’t need at all. Deals

where we get €10 off when we spend €50 are particularly dangerous because we often buy items we had no real need to buy just to get to €50 in order to qualify for the reduction.

Funny enough, the number of times that I have had to rush away from the till to pick up a few items to bring my bill up to €50 is quite worrying and, in truth, I would literally pick up anything at all as long as it brought me up to the required amount.

O’Garro advises you should stick to a shopping list, or else end up with stuff you had no plan for, and which will be thrown out because it went out

of date. I have to admit that was another piece that rang a bell with me because we are guilty as charged of throwing out way too much foodstuff, but from now on I am going to change my ways.

Bargains have always tempted me and I told you before of the lad over in London who drank in Jack Grady’s pub, the Golden Lion, where I was working, and who came running in to tell me of a fellow selling three pairs of new shoes on the street outside for £5. Knowing I couldn’t leave the busy bar as I was the only barman on duty, he asked me to tell him my shoe size and he

told me he would very kindly get them for me. Handing over my £5 I started to think of my lovely new shoes which I would wear to the dance in the Galtymore the following Saturday night. However as the minutes went by and my new friend didn’t come back I began to realise that this was a bargain that wasn’t coming my way, and I never again saw the man and I never saw the imaginary shoes. And so I got a very early lesson about the validity or otherwise of bargains but sadly the lesson went unheeded and to this day the thought of a bargain still excites me - I don’t suppose I’ll ever learn.

Finally for this week…

We all know how far the tentacles of the Roscommon People can stretch but even I was surprised to hear that we go all the way across the Atlantic to Martha’s Vineyard in Boston where Fiona Finneran, formerly of St. Jude’s, Ardsallaghmore, Roscommon now resides. She manages to get her hands on the People most weeks and shares it with some of her American friends, especially the Lowe family, Eric and Sheryl.

Anyway a couple of friends of mine stayed for a night or two with Fiona last week, and in the course of their visit they were introduced to an American game called Cornhole…a sort of a twist on pitch and toss except you toss bean bags at a board with holes at either end. If you get the bag into the hole it’s worth three points and if it lands on the board it’s worth one point.

An American team consisting of Eric, Sheryl and daughter Emily Lowe along with nephew Nash Pelky took on an Irish team of Ciara Dowd and Shane Finneran (4 to 2 seems a bit unfair to me) and in a result that sent shockwaves all around the Cornhole world, the Irish team were victorious and are now the unofficial world champions.

The Lowes had intended to visit Ireland in the near future but after their surprise loss they will never show their faces this side of the Atlantic such is their disappointment at their defeat.

Despite all of that, however, my friends had a great time in Martha’s Vineyard, where Michelle Obama was out jogging most days, and before they left they invited the Lowes to come to Roscommon for a rematch. If it happens I will keep you posted but until then regards to Fiona and the Lowes in the US and if I ever get to Boston I will have a go at Cornholing.

Why I never joined the ‘exclusively breastfeeding’ #EBF club!

August is ‘World Breastfeeding Month’ with campaigns and initiatives galore being launched in a bid to encourage expectant mothers to forgo the formula and favour the breast; which ‘is best’, according to every ‘expert’ I’ve ever come into contact with.

Maybe it is and maybe it isn’t, I’m no childcare specialist; rather I’m just an imperfect parent. Mind you, I do bow to the superior knowledge of those who profess to be ‘perfect’ and who, interestingly enough, insist that breastfeeding makes your child ‘smarter’, ‘healthier’ and, according to a WHO study, “can cut the chances of a child becoming obese by up to 25 per cent”.

Wow, given those odds one would almost be forgiven for coming to the conclusion that all breastfed babies grow up to be fabulously slim, super-fit, filthy-rich, nerdy-anoraks who live charmed lives.

On the other hand, if Ireland has one of the “lowest breastfeeding rates in the world” (according to the Irish Maternity Indicator System), would it be fair to assume that those of us who’ve been bottle-fed are a bunch of overweight, work-

shy slackers, saddled with an inferiority complex and a low IQ? Nonsense!

As far as I’m concerned, (and as a mother who eventually bottle-fed both her babies), while breast milk provides many positive benefits (yes, we get it); there are numerous situations when it’s just not an option, and no mother should ever feel guilty, nor should she feel ashamed because she chooses formula!

When I was pregnant with both of my daughters, every medical expert I came into contact with – my family doctor, my obstetrician, the nurse testing the urine, the midwife facilitating the antenatal classes, even my in-laws – tried to brainwash me into breastfeeding. I’m sure many Roscommon mothers will be able to relate to my experience because it is not unique.

When my own daughter tearfully told me how she’d felt ‘pressured’ and ‘bullied’ to breastfeed my granddaughter, I became very concerned. Remembering how inadequate I had felt all those years ago as a teen mother guilted into breastfeeding, I immediately identified the ‘bully’ who was

applying the ‘pressure’ and discreetly (and respectfully) told her to back off and mind her own business.

Don’t get me wrong readers; I’m all for breastfeeding if that’s what a mother wishes to do and I’d be the first to support any ante-natal initiative which supplies education and training around this process as actively as it does around labour and giving birth. However, it’s my opinion that, rather than place an emphasis on the romanticised version – where mammy is bathed in a rapturous glow a la Duccio di Buoninsegna’s Madonna and child – the programmes should provide expectant mothers with the full facts.

Lesson one should focus on the cracked nipples, the screaming-hungry infants, the emotional highs and lows, the marathon pumping/expressing sessions, the leaking boobs, the milk-stained t-shirts and the physical toll breastfeeding takes on your body. Oh I nearly forgot, the fact that Irish culture is so flippin’ uptight, the slightest accidental flash of a side-boob in a public area is likely to cause some wellintentioned curtain-twitching

busy-body to cover you in a ‘decency shawl’.

Full disclosure! I did try breastfeeding my babies…I lasted three whole months on my six-week-premature number one infant before I gave up. I threw in the towel (literally) after only three days on number two because I just could not cope with a ten pound creature, (adorable and beautiful though she was), attached to my boob 24/7!

Again I’m not anti-breastfeeding, it just wasn’t for me, but I do know that many women – the members of that exclusively breastfeeding brigade #EBF – have had wonderful experiences doing it; and that’s great, fair play to them. In fact, one of my friends didn’t wean her kid till he was six years old; even expressing and freezing her milk in a flask for the ‘little milk monster’, as I jokingly called him, to drink at school. (Yep, I just threw up in my mouth too at the thought of it).

By overstating the benefits of breastfeeding and skimming over the drawbacks, it’s my opinion and my experience that (some, not all) ‘lactation consultants’ are doing a grave

disservice to mothers. No one should feel guilted, shamed or harassed into signing up to that #EBF club as part of their #mammysquadgoals.

Breastfeed or formula/bottle feed whenever, wherever and however you like ladies; the choice is yours and yours alone…it is not your partner’s, your mother’s or your in-laws’, and it’s definitely not your pushy lactation consultant’s. Before those fingers

start pecking away at the keyboard, composing those letters of complaint to the editor, I do know that not all lactation consultants are pushy.

Oh by the way, I looked it up and like a ‘birth doula’, being a ‘lactation consultant’ is an actual job. Who knew? Fair play! Maybe I should consider becoming a ‘complex bottle-feeding consultant’.

If I did, my motto would be #prochoiceformammies!

It’s going to be scorchio!

Complaining is not just our nation’s national pastime, it has quite literally become part of our identity. Sure it’s who we are; i.e. a miserable bunch of whingers with every single aspect of our lives being viewed as a certified disaster. Am I right? You know I am.

It all began with what I call the great persecution when we were controlled by the Brits and told what language to speak. Next

came the great suppression, where every aspect of our lives was influenced, restricted and restrained by the opinions of the Catholic church, enshrouding us all in a cloak of negativity and criticism. In fact, (and I hate to admit this), if I haven’t ripped apart some aspect of my own life before breakfast I don’t feel I can face the rest of the day!

(That’s being dramatic but you know what I mean).

With that in mind, and as the mercury’s set to rise to the high twenties this week, I’d like to offer readers a bit of advice…and it’s this: enjoy the sun while you can. For a few days, forget about your climate anxiety (yes I suffer from it too) and ignore the apocalypseis-nigh snowflake alarmists who continuously moan, groan, whinge and whine off the Richter scale about the lack of rain.

Yes we’re in the midst of a climate crisis, I get it, and I’m personally very concerned about it. However, given the majority of us are struggling from pay packet to pay packet in order to make ends meet, can we throw shade (pardon the pun) at the doom and gloom nay-sayers and just this once, drop the guilt and take pleasure in (responsibly) feeling the sun on our faces!

It has been my experience that all too often people are quick to criticise, complain and point out where others have, (in their opinion), fallen short and are, by contrast, extremely slow to highlight it when someone has been helpful or provided them with a good service.

It’s for that reason I’d like to mention the men who work at the Roscommon Civic Amenity waste and recycling centre on the Lanesboro Road and say thank you for being such a genuinely decent, helpful and friendly bunch of lads.

Myself and himself make monthly visits to this Roscommon County Council-run centre, which provides a great service to the public; and even though a visit takes up part of my Saturday morning and leaves my car smelly, I’m very grateful to be

able to avail of it.

However, I’m often baffled by the virtue-signalling-you’vestolen-my-dreams-earth-warrior-whingers – Greta Thunberg wannabes – who, crushed by their responsibility to Mother Earth, (you’d think we’d entered Mad Max territory the way some carry-on), suddenly morph into petulant prats if the lads politely and respectfully ask them to stop dumping contaminated, nonrecyclable items into the wrong bins!

Listen up folks…these lads are paid to work, provide a service, and guide the public on what items are acceptable and what aren’t. They are not there to be subjected to verbal abuse by holier-than-thou, moral grandstanders…so cut them some slack, have some manners, sort out your rubbish and say thank you!

NewsPeople Gospel reflection Sunday, August 14th Our God is a consuming fire, the Scriptures tell us (see Hebrews 12:29; Deuteronomy 4:24). And in this week’s Gospel, Jesus uses the image of fire to describe the demands of discipleship.

The fire He has come to cast on the earth is the fire that He wants to blaze in each of our hearts. He made us from the dust of the earth (see Genesis 2:7) and filled us with the fire of the Holy Spirit in Baptism (see Luke 3:16). We were baptized into His death (see Romans 6:3). This is the baptism our Lord speaks of in the Gospel this week. The baptism with which He must be baptized is His passion and death, by which He accomplished our redemption and sent forth the fire of the Spirit on the earth (see Acts 2:3).

The fire has been set, but it is not yet blazing. We are called to enter deeper into the consuming love of God. We must examine our consciences and our actions, submitting ourselves to the revealing fire of God’s Word (see 1 Corinthians 3:13).

In our struggle against sin, we have not yet resisted to the point of shedding our own blood, Paul tells us in this week’s Epistle. We have not undergone the suffering that Jeremiah suffers in the First Reading this week.

But this is what true discipleship requires. To be a disciple is to be inflamed with the love of the God. It is to have an unquenchable desire for holiness and zeal for the salvation of our brothers and sisters.

Being His disciple does not bring peace in the false way that the world proclaims peace (see Jeremiah 8:11). It means division and hardship. It may bring us to conflict with our own flesh and blood. But Christ is our peace (see Ephesians 2:14). By His Cross He has lifted us up from the mire of sin and death - as He will rescue the prophet Jeremiah (see Jeremiah 38:10).

And as we sing in the Psalm this week, we trust in our deliverer.

Changing Places Michelle’s journey from Soweto to Castlecoote < A SERIES BY CARMEL KELLY PALMER

Michelle Hlongwane thought she had her dreams all wrapped up but first she had a long and winding road to tread.

“I was born in a province which is called Kwa-Zulu Natal. I am the youngest of three girls. I was still a toddler when my family left to go to live in a town called Soweto, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

“As my mother did not work, we were free to move around to live in different places. I moved again to a town called Kempton Park, where I remained up until I moved to Ireland. My sister, Susan, moved to Ireland in the mid-2000s and I then

moved from South Africa to stay with my sister in 2012, my mother joining us in Ireland to live here also,” she says.

It would be true to say that Michelle has been ‘on the move’ like a whirlwind, since arriving here.

“Upon arriving in Ireland, I did transition year in Virginia College, Co. Cavan.

I was absolutely resistant to doing it as in my head it was like taking a step back in my education.

“Now, looking back, it did me good, allowing me time to adjust to the culture shock, the accents, which were totally different to what I was used to, the school system, and also the cold weather!

newsbriefs Annual ‘Bat Talk’ at Roscommon Castle To celebrate National Heritage Week, Roscommon Tidy Towns Association has organised the annual ‘bat talk’ which will be given this year by ecologist David Fallon in Roscommon Castle on Tuesday, August 16th from 9 pm to 10 pm.

David will give a talk on bats and will bring along a bat detector for people to try. Please wear sturdy shoes, suitable clothing and bring a torch for safety. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Archaeology lecture on Ardcarne A lecture on the archaeology of the Parish of Ardcarne will take in the Church of Ireland, Ardcarne, this Saturday, August 13th, at 8.30 pm sharp.

The lecture, which is taking place as part of National Heritage Week, will be given by Dr Kieran O’Conor of NUI Galway. Admission for this event is free.

Cloontuskert Cemetery Mass and grotto unveiling The annual mass for all the deceased who are laid to rest in Cloontuskert Cemetery will be celebrated at 6 pm this Sunday (August 14th) and all are welcome.

Meanwhile, the unveiling and blessing of the reconstructed grotto in Cloontuskert will take place at 7 pm on Our Lady’s Day, August 15th. All are welcome to attend.

Talk to mark National Heritage Week in Oran Oran-Ardkieran Cemetery Committee are hosting a talk as part of National Heritage Week on Thursday, August 18th at 8 pm in Cloonycolgan Community Centre. The talk will discuss the results of a recent study which was undertaken at the historical ecclesiastical site of Oran by Earthsound Geophysics. Admission is free of charge.

me; acting was top of the list but funding was difficult to come by. This led me to joining Eir in Dublin, where I worked for about ten months. I enjoyed being in an office setting but was also thinking about acting and that is where the conflict between the two began”.

Michelle refused to let go of her dream of being an actor, and before she left her position at Eir, she joined an agency called MovieExtras.

“I left Eir and started working full-time as a background actor for many productions including ‘Into The Badlands’ (an American martial arts series), ‘Taken Down’ (RTÉ), ‘Blood’ (RTÉ) and many more,” Michelle explains.

“It was through background acting that I found an acting agent. However, agent or no agent, actors live life having a full season of work, and then zero work!”

Unfortunately, Michelle went from having plenty of work to being out of work for over a year at the age of 21.

“It was the dark side of an acting career and it affected me mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Depression kicked in and all that goes with it. I went through this phase for almost two years. Reading self-help books, self introspection and prayer helmed me and I eventual-

ly picked myself up. It was time to find another job and I soon found one as a Process Executive with a company called Cognizant Technology Solutions in Dublin, where I still work today,” Michelle said.

Michelle found her new role – reviewing and processing data – interesting.

“I started working in Cognizant in February 2020 and soon after an interest in technology sparked in me, which inspired the decision to apply for college,” she said.

“I enrolled in Athlone Institute of Technology to study Software Design With Artificial Intelligence for Cloud Computing.

“I then found a beautiful place to rent in County Roscommon, a county totally unknown to me at that time”.

Michelle talks about Roscommon and her

move here. She has been fortunate to have chosen an idyllic setting, Castlecoote, just outside the town and surrounded by the lush green fields of Roscommon.

Michelle says: “I absolutely love Roscommon.

I love the scenery; trees, lakes, the greenery, and the farms and animals which are so much a part of the ground we tread upon.

I would love one day to perhaps own a farm. I also love the amazing peace and quiet of the countryside, and also the people.

Everyone is so kind and hard-working too with all the diggers and tractors to prove it!”

Michelle is happy here and while her hopes and dreams revolve around software development in the creative industry, acting will always be a big part of her.

Journey through America into the path of recession Dateline: Cleveland, USA Summer 2022 The queue was getting longer by the second at the Walmart shop checkout till and the customers in the line were slowly but surely beginning to lose their patience. For over thirty-five minutes, they had waited quietly in line so that they could check through the contents of their supermarket trolley and get home from the heat of another scorching day in the state of Ohio – but for all that time this queue hadn’t moved one single inch. None of them had expected this torturous delay when they arrived at the store in Cleveland’s heartland but the lady at the top of the line was inconsiderably difficult, and the visitors from Ireland behind her in the queue were about to personally meet the first prime example they had seen of the recession now threatening to strike the USA and much more of the western world.

I have been a visitor to Walmart stores many times over the last thirty years of journeys to the east coast of the States. My brother and my late sister and her family have lived there for decades, and I don’t think there has ever been a visit when we haven’t been in the store. The pedigree of this trader is massive. The firm is a popular multinational retailer that operates a chain of spacious supermarkets known locally as supercentres, discount department stores, and grocery stores with 10,585 shops all over the States and in another twenty countries.

Putting it bluntly, nobody on this planet can lay a hand on Walmart when it comes to selling groceries and other stuff under one roof. They are the world’s largest company by revenue, with about 570 billion US dollars in annual revenue, and if the US economy is turning they usually know it first.

The problem at the top of the queue was fairly straightforward; the lady who was trying to check through the contents of her trolley was unable to do so because she didn’t have enough money to pay for them, but it was the way in which she was trying her very best to get around the problem that proved a real eye-opener.

account to buy qualified items such as ointments or medicines, baby nappies or even just wipes and the health plan usually allows you to purchase over the counter products with no money out of pocket.

So all is good, I hear you say. The card gives extra benefits. Well, that’s the plan anyway but that’s not the way it worked out when we visited the store in Cleveland. It became clear as the lady tried to pay for her stuff that not all the goods in the basket were going to covered by the medical

Like so many other leading supermarket chains around the world, a visit to the checkout till at Walmart is not just about taking out your cash or your debit card anymore and trying to pay your bill. It’s now become a much more sophisticated administrative experience dominated by payments which involve plastic discount cards.

Here in Ireland, we are well used to the inquisition about the store loyalty cards – the first question normally faced when it comes to paying up at the till, but as I learned in the Walmart queue, the US experience is a much more complicated one – albeit one aimed at helping people to pay their

discount cards in her wallets. It was clear that not all of the stuff she was buying was based on the medical needs of herself or her mother (whose card she also was using) and no matter how many times she tried to re-tweak the shop and take our ordinary groceries like bread and milk, a deficit of between ten and twenty dollars remained on the cash register. When the woman opened her purse to try and meet that deficit, the situation did not improve unfortunately. She told the cashier in the end she had four dollars in cash and that was it.

The basket was taken away from her and she left.

This unfortunate woman at the head of the till in Cleveland is not alone at the moment – in what is supposed to be one of the world’s richest countries. We learned last week that the US economy will likely fall into recession by the end of 2022 as the Federal Reserve raises rates to tame prices.

Economists over here warn that financial conditions will tighten further, consumers’ sentiment is souring, energy and food supply distortions have worsened and the global growth outlook has deteriorated.

Sobering news This sobering analysis comes as the US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that “unacceptably high” prices are likely to stick with consumers through 2022 and that she expects the US economy to slow down. Rising gas prices right now are also crippling people on low incomes here and no matter which way the lady at the till may turn it’s not going to improve for a while.

The city of Cleveland was deemed the poorest big city in the US in 2019 with 114,000 people living in poverty, including 37,700 children. The data reports 32.7 per cent of people are living in poverty now, a median household income of $30,907 from 2015-2019 and the median gross rent of $719 a week.

At times like this, the people can only turn to organisations like the Boys & Girls Club of Northeast Ohio who try to fill the gap. A bit like our St. Vincent de Paul or Lions Clubs, they were collecting funds outside Walmart’s on the day we visited. For the past two years, Joseph Greathouse has been the director of the Boys & Girls club location in Cleveland’s Broadway neighbourhood.

He said for many children, the Boys & Girls Club is the only place for them to really feel safe.

“They know when they enter these doors, one, they’re going to feel loved, two, they’re going to feel safe and they will be fed, so it’s like a home away from home,” he said, “these kids are going home to pay electric bills, put food on the table and they have to grow up quicker and it’s just that cycle over and over and over again that keeps (them) stuck in that same type of way”.

To end our story from the USA, a glimmer of hope. In the end, a passing Good Samaritan followed the lady into the Walmart’s vast car park and gave her the 20-dollar bill she needed to get her critical shopping. She is covered for this week.

A plaque will be unveiled in recognition of the Grehan sisters, who were part of the folk music and song revival of the sixties in Ireland and further afield. The plaque will be unveiled this Saturday, August 13th at 2 pm at their former home, Grehan’s Bar on The Crescent, Boyle – now the current location of the ‘Food Fusion’ restaurant.

The Grehan sisters were a group of singers and musicians consisting of Frances

on banjo-mandolin, Helen on guitar, and both Helen and Marie on spoons. Music and song was part and parcel of their early lives and it was no surprise that they were to excel as entertainers in adulthood.

Boyle and its hinterland was steeped in traditional song and music. The AllIreland Fleadhs of 1960 and 1966 in the town of Boyle established it as a magnet for fellow musicians and singers and left a legacy that remains to this day. Ireland in the six-

ties was emerging from the dark gloomy days of economic stagnation experienced in the fifties.

Irish groups began to have international success with the Clancy Brothers in the United States and The Dubliners from the country’s capital.

During their formative years the girls were influenced by another renowned Boyle resident singer named John Reilly from the ‘traveller’ community, residing in Green Street. Grehan’s Bar and

home became a mecca for emerging Irish folk and ballad singers. One of the most significant singers they influenced was Christy Moore. Christy first heard John Reilly in Grehan’s and adopted a number of John Reilly’s songs such as ‘The Well Below the Valley’ and ‘Raggle Taggle Gypsy’.

In the mid-sixties the Sisters began to entertain, at first in their own premises, then branching out to other venues in the region. After some time, they became tagged as ‘the female Clancys’ and their reputation and opportunities expanded. An all-girl group was unique then. They toured Ireland and then they began making inroads into the folk clubs of England, Scotland and Wales. Their repertoire included a range of ballads such as ‘Henry Joy McCracken’, ‘The Wind that Shakes the Barley’ and ‘On the Galtymore Mountains’. Their style

extended from the slow laments to rousing renditions of popular ballads.

Christy Moore is quoted as saying: “We often travelled up [to Boyle] to hear these girls sing, for they melted our hearts with the energy of their playing and the exuberance of their three voices, and we loved them”.

Around 1965 the sisters moved to Dublin to develop their playing and singing careers. They were included in a short musical comedy film with the Dubliners called ‘O ’Donoghue’s Opera’. They released a number of records including an LP titled ‘On the Galtymore Mountains’ which featured a mix of traditional music and Irish rebel songs.

They moved to the larger folk landscape of the UK, basing themselves in Manchester. They were a popular attraction on the British Folk Club Circuit and the major urban concert

venues. They were regular guests on UK Radio particularly a series called ‘Country Meets Folk’. A stand-out occasion was a concert in the Royal Albert Hall with Paul Brady and The Johnston’s, compered

by Dominic Behan brother of Brendan.

They ceased touring as a group in the early seventies but their interest in music and performing publicly continued. Grehan’s Bar changed hands in the midnineties.

Frances linked up with fellow musicians Frank Montgomery (known as just Monty) and Brendan O’ Dowd, and for quite a number of years they were very popular entertainers in the region. The Sisters came together on special occasions such as the 2014 concert in Boyle with Christy Moore in tribute to John Reilly, when a plaque in his memory was also placed on the Grehan house.

In 2015 they were honoured with being the recipients of the Annie McNulty Award at the opening of the South Roscommon Singers Festival. Helen B. Grehan launched a book of her songs and poems, fusing the political with the personal, just two months ago. Political activism was also an important part of their lives. Frances went for election to the County Council in Boyle in the seventies.

Frances married Pat Malone who sadly passed away in early 2018. Frances and the family live in Dublin. Marie married John Clarke and raised their family in Manchester.

They were regular visitors to Boyle. Marie and John returned to Ireland in later life and lived in Leitrim for a number of years. Marie and John died in December 2020 and both were buried, on the same day, in Assylinn graveyard to the sound of the music they loved.

Walking in the footsteps of the Lost Generation of Black 47 Many years ago, Patrick Kilmartin recounted to his children (and they, in turn, to their children) the events of March 13th 1846, when aged fourteen, he and his family, their neighbours, and friends were evicted from their ancestral homes in Ballinlass near Mountbellew. It was the beginning of months and years of sorrowful events, leading to the loss of thousands locally through death and emigration – a loss that still has not been repaired.

175 years on, Mountbellew Heritage and Tourism have planned a public ‘Famine Walk’ in order to share the story of Patrick’s family and many others as part of Heritage Week. The walk will take place this Sunday, (August 14th), and is one of a series of events organised by Mountbellew Heritage to mark this pivotal year in Irish history. Earlier in the year, the ‘Emigrants and Exiles – the East Galway Story’ Conference was held over Zoom, with speakers from

three continents participating, and for National Famine Commemoration Day, a Walk of Remembrance was held to remember the victims of An Gorta Mór.

Patrick’s family were one of many who took the road to Dublin and the road to Liverpool. Eventually he ended up in Australia and was separated from his siblings, who had emigrated to the United States. Just this year on the 175th anniversary of Black 47, Patrick’s descendants in Australia, Natalie and Robyn, made contact with his siblings’ descendants via DNA through the East Galway Genealogy and DNA FB group (facebook.com/groups/eastgalwaygenealogy).

However, their family was not the only one of this Lost Generation to be split apart. The Kelly family in Mountbellew town saw their son Thomas leave for the United States, and although he returned to Mountbellew in late 1867, it was as a fugitive from ‘British justice’. He was a Fenian Leader whose letter in March 1867 proclaiming an Irish Repub-

lic had led to a price on his head.

He was captured but then freed in Manchester, before returning in a disguise lent by the Franciscan community to bid a last farewell to his widowed mother. The death of a policeman in the audacious escape led to the infamous Manchester Martyrs deaths of Allen, Larkin and O’Brien.

Then there were Ellen Hansberry, Mary Flanagan, and Mary Ann Taylor, three girls sent to Australia from the local workhouse as part of a group of thirty in order to answer the labour and woman shortage of the new British colony of Western Australia. Their voyage aboard the Palestine in 1852-53 is well documented, as is the later voyage in July 1853 of the Primrose, which carried fifty more young women to Canada.

These are some of the stories that will form part of Mountbellew Heritage and Tourism Network’s inaugural ‘Famine Walk’.

‘A Lone Furrow’ returns to Roscommon Arts Centre

Roscommon Drama Group are delighted to return to the Arts Centre on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (18th, 19th and 20th) of this month with Tommy Murray’s play ‘A Lone Furrow’, which ran to packed houses three years ago.

The play captures the main events in the life of Aleen Cust, a woman of integrity, intelligence, and exceptional determination. She was the first woman vet in Britain and Ireland, who practised in Athleague for over twenty years (19001923), but because she was a woman she was not allowed to register as a Veterinary Surgeon by the (all male) members of the Royal Council on Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).

William Byrne, an enlightened veterinary surgeon who had a practice in Athleague, and whose monument stands in the Square, Roscommon, defied the RCVS and appointed Aleen as his Veterinary Assistant. The local priest was

equally incensed at her appointment.

The play dramatizes her long struggle for recognition as a professional vet and the obstacles placed in her path, both locally and on a broader front. It is a story of courage and persistence, needing to be told some 100 years on.

Since this is the 100th anniversary of Aleen Cust receiving her hard-fought Diploma and getting her name on the register of Veterinary Surgeons, an Aleen Cust Memorial Society has been set up, led by a small group of retired or semi-retired veterinary surgeons in Roscommon and East Galway to remember and pay tribute to this extraordinary woman who has been forgotten by history. Roscommon Drama Group is pleased to be part of this tribute.

Celebrate bogs’ natural and cultural heritage this Heritage Week National Heritage Week is taking place from August 13th to 21st and this year’s theme is sustainability and biodiversity. Kilteevan Tidy Towns, in partnership with Connecting Communities with Peatlands and National Parks and Wildlife Service, is hosting a bog walk and moth identification event for National Heritage Week on Cloonlarge Bog on Saturday, August 20th from 11.45 am to 2.30 pm.

For the past five years, Kilteevan Tidy Towns with the support of bog owners, landowners, stakeholders, and the local community developed the Cloonlarge Loop Walking/Cycling Trails. Cloonlarge Bog is part of Lough Ree Special Area of Conservation.

They reopened former bog roads and integrated them into the existing road infrastructure and developed 5km/7km or 10km walks around Kilteevan bogs.

Kilteevan Tidy Towns’ actions to engage the community with their bog are great examples of community-led initiatives to develop a recreational facility in the area while promoting the importance of the bog for biodiversity and the environment.

On the bog walk you will meet members of the community who worked to complete numerous projects, installations, and publications and learn about how they achieved it. You will also meet the conservation rangers to learn about the restoration works on the bog, and delve into the world of moths with the opening of a moth trap and identifying these misunderstood creatures.

Aoife Kirk, project coordinator of Connecting Communities with Peatlands said: “This is a great opportunity for the public to visit a bog in a Special Area of Conservation. The looped walks allow the public to explore and engage with the biodiversity and learn about the benefits of conservation and the role the local community can play in enhancing and advocating for biodiversity and conservation of our bogs”.

Roscommon teenager attends Foróige’s International Youth Leadership Conference A Roscommon girl joined 250 teenagers from around the world in County Kildare recently for Foróige’s International Leadership for Life Youth Conference.

Jennifer Rogers joined other young people from the United States, Ukraine, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, South Africa and Ireland to learn how to become leaders in their own lives.

During the week-long conference the teens learned crucial life skills such as empathy, decision making, communication skills, critical thinking and teamwork.

Seán Campbell, CEO of Foróige, said: “It’s so important for this event to be

back again in person. The conference gives young leaders the opportunity to not only learn from the speakers and facilitators, but to learn from each other in a fun and safe environment.

“Young people are playing a greater role than ever before in highlighting the issues that really matter and youth activism and community action are central pillars of our Leadership programme.

I’m always in awe of what young people can achieve when given the opportunity”.

As part of the week-long conference, the delegates got a chance to meet inspirational guest speakers including Yemi Adenuga,

the first black woman to be elected as a public representative in Ireland, Professor Mark Brennan, the UNESCO Chair for Rural Community, Leadership and Youth Development at Pennsylvania State University and Jordan Lee, professional high jump athlete on the Irish Paralympic team.

When asked about speaking at this year’s event Yemi Adenuga commented: “As a woman who is very passionate about building women and young people, I am always thankful for every opportunity to inspire, empower and impact the youth so their future can be brighter and their lives better than ours”.

Alannah Ita Healy If you walk down Dominick Street in Galway this week, you’ll be met with a sea of Pride flags that stretch all the way down the road, jutting out from above the various bars, shops, and chippies. This is because Galway is celebrating its 2022 Pride festival this week, and the area is set to play host to a fair amount of the festival’s events.

I’d seen the street lined with Pride flags like this earlier this summer, back when Pride Month was being celebrated in June. However, during that time, while Dublin Pride and similar celebrations happened, Galway did not hold its full festival. Not until now, two months later. But Galway Pride not taking place during Pride month (as one might expect) is not an outlier; the case is the same for many counties across the country.

The Irish Pride movement first began gaining real traction in the 1970s, with the first Pride march taking place in 1974 with ten marchers in attendance. It was almost ten years later before the first large-scale march took place, and when it finally did in 1983, it, devastatingly, was in response the brutal murder of an Irishman, Declan Flynn, in a homophobic attack, and the subsequent release of the five men responsible for his death. Evidentially, the Irish

Pride movement was facing an uphill battle, and it was not helped by the fact there was very little strength in numbers.

And so, in deciding to host events at different dates in different counties, more people could travel around to attend them.

This tradition has continued forward to today (explaining Galway’s August Pride celebrations), despite modern attendances not presenting the same issue - thousands were in attendance at Pride events in Dublin and Cork this year after the Covid hiatus, and no doubt Galway will see huge crowds for Saturday’s parade. Irish Pride today has moved way beyond ten-person marches, and just seeing how far the movement has come is testament to how our societal attitudes around LGBTQ+ issues have progressed in Ireland.

After all, in the last few decades, Irish society has consistently edged towards more progressive territories when it comes to LGBTQ+ issues and rights.

Of course, there remains more that could be done, but historically speaking, Ireland has continually been on a path of progress. That said, in the more recent past, I’ve felt there seems to be renewed fire lit under anti-LGBT+ sentiment bubbling up now in Ireland.

For example, though we

might reflect on Declan Flynn’s murder in 1983 and think of it as backward times, it was only this year that a lesbian couple were violently attacked in Dublin and two men passed away as a result of a suspected homophobic attack in Sligo.

In addition, despite the issue being raised more and more in public discussion recently, Ireland to this day has failed to outlaw the practicing of conversion ‘therapy’, which has been so incredibly damaging and traumatising for many LGBTQ+ folk over the years (not to mention being entirely ineffectual and rooted in bigotry).

But perhaps the most evident example of Ireland’s backsliding on LGBTQ+ issues, can be found by looking at the increase in anti-trans sentiment that we’ve been seeing recently. Just a few months ago, RTÉ

were criticised for enabling transphobic hate speech when callers’ anti-trans views were put to air. Even side-lining the question of what RTÉ should rightfully platform, the incident highlighted the surprising extent and popularity of antitrans opinions.

Flash forward to this week, when the IRFU followed in the footsteps of the RFU and World Rugby to ban trans women from contact rugby to “ensure fair competition and the safety of competitors”.

I’ve written before about how the opinions of those opposing trans women’s inclusion in sports are often rooted in transphobia and an unwavering belief that biological women are inferior to biological men, but then disguised as an attempt to ‘protect women’s sports’.

In this case too, the IRFU’s

decision seems much more linked to the controversy around trans sportswomen at the moment, as opposed to actual concerns about women’s sport – especially considering how often they’re under fire for mistreating women players (one recent example being in 2021, when Connacht players were forced to change beside the bins at Donnybrook stadium).

These types of events, the increasingly blatant sense of homophobia and transphobia that seems to be permeating into Irish society, are incredibly disheartening. We have, in so many instances, been an example of progress and inclusivity, but recently there has been a changing of the tide. It feels as though in some ways, progression on LGBTQ+ issues is not the (relatively) steady march forward it once was.

Perhaps this is purely reflective of the much more divided political climate we’ve all landed in the past while. PostCovid especially, there has been a deeper global sense of political polarisation. We have seen how so many people’s attitudes have diverged to extremes, and perhaps progression for LGBTQ+ issues is just one of the latest casualties of this.

Ireland, for all its past (and recent) transgressions and strides when it comes to LGBTQ+ issues, remains a country that is testament to how much things can change – both for the worse and the better it seems. Hopefully the political polarisation and rise in extremist anti-LGBTQ opinions we’ve seen recently fades away soon, and the path to progress from here on out is clearer.

ICMSA accuses Government of ‘three card trick’ over destocking ICMSA President Pat McCormack has accused Government Ministers of attempting a ‘three card trick’ over compulsory destocking of family farms.

Mr. McCormack this week contradicted claims

by Ministers that compulsory destocking was not being sought.

“Such compulsory destocking has already begun and just because it is happening via the amended Nitrates Regulations does not make it any less of a harmful fact,” he said.

Mr McCormack said that there are family farms who will have to destock at the start of 2023 and may have to further destock in 2024 due to policies agreed by Government.

He said the net affect of this would be the removal of the family farm model to be replaced by the industrial scale farms seen in other countries.

“This policy is being driven by the changes introduced under the Nitrates Regulations which were proposed and designed by

our own Government and cannot be blamed on the EU,” he said.

The ICMSA President added that politicians – both local and national – seemed “completely unaware of the effects the changes would have on full-time commercial dairy family farms who, were constantly assured, policy was attempting to protect”.

Mr. McCormack accused the Government of introducing massive policy changes without consultation and he cited the amended nitrates rates as an example.

“Government policy amounts to a ‘three card trick’ where farming communities were distracted and told to focus on one highly visible area while ruinous policy changes were smuggled past without any worthwhile consultation or analysis,” he said.

“We have always said that farmers are happy and willing to play our role in this historic drive to sustainability, but we seem

to be the only element that remembers that there was meant to be room for economic sustainability as well.

ICSA Chair: ‘Sheep farmers are being fleeced!’

ICSA Sheep chairman, Sean McNamara, has slammed meat factories, claiming they have taken over €4 million out of sheep farmers pockets over the last number of weeks.

“Lamb prices have been pulled sharply again and again in recent weeks; we’re now back €1/kg compared to where we were in the second week of July. That is around €21/kg slashed from every lamb processed at the 21kg weight limit. With an average of 50,000 lambs processed per week, that’s €1.05 million denied to sheep farmers per week, or over €4 million over the course of four weeks,” he said.

“Sheep farmers simply cannot absorb that kind of hit. Inflation is hitting us hard and input costs have gone through the roof. The processors tell us that we are getting the same as last year, but what good is that to us? Last year’s prices are not enough to keep us in business this year. We cannot survive as a sector when we cannot cover our basic costs of production”.

Mr. McNamara urged all sheep farmers to resist any further price cuts: “There is no justification for these price cuts and the way processors are treating their suppliers is unacceptable”.

“It’s up to our rural representatives to insist that our farming communities get at least the same level of consultation and consider-

ation that the Government seems very happy to give everyone else,” concluded Mr. McCormack.

Castlerea MART WATCH Larger numbers of stock presented for sale this week with trade and prices holding well, and in some cases improved this week especially for the forward lots, while the quality stores made some very fancy prices.

The bullock ring witnessed prices peaking at €2,360 and the heifer ring noticed lots making up to €2,330, while the dry cows peaked at €2,320. The weanling rings have started very brightly with the bulls making up to €3.67 per kilo, while the heifer weanlings peaked at €4.25 per kilo.

Markets justify stronger beef prices – IFA

IFA Livestock Chairman Brendan Golden.

IFA National Livestock Chair, Brendan Golden has said that market conditions are favourable for beef as prices in our key export markets stabilise and in some cases strengthen.

This, he said, when aligned with the tighter supplies of suitably finished cattle, is adding to the increased demand from factories for cattle.

He said to date 997,516 cattle have been processed during 2022, an increase of 89,716 head or 10% from the corresponding period in 2021.

Prime cattle throughput has increased by 45,677 head with cow throughput

increasing by 34,122 head.

Brendan Golden said cattle supplies off grass are expected to remain steady and there is an expected increase in demand for exports of forward store and finished cattle as the year progresses.

The IFA National Livestock Chair said there is room for stronger beef price returns in the market place with the Irish Prime Composite Price at €4.82/kg now a full 19c/kg below the Prime Export Benchmark Price of €5.01c/kg.

He said attempts by factories last week to reduce quotes further did not

succeed and as the week progressed prices offered to secure cattle increased.

Mr. Golden said the live export trade has performed well so far in 2022 with cattle exports running 13% ahead of 2021 levels. There were 215,539 cattle exported from Ireland up to the week ending 10 July 2022.

The IFA National Livestock Chair said exports of weanlings are ahead of previous years, driven by the increase in cattle being exported to third country markets and also some increase to customers in the EU.

Murphy urges the public to support local shows Speaking following the launch of the 50th Roscommon Agricultural Show at Hannon’s Hotel on Thursday night last, Senator Eugene Murphy complimented those involved in show since 1970 and welcomed funding for agricultural shows across the country.

“It is great to see the shows back.

I would like to congratulate the Roscommon Show committee for

putting a full programme of items together and I urge the public of Roscommon town and the rural community throughout County Roscommon to come out in large numbers to this year’s Show,” he said.

Senator Murphy also welcomed what he described as the Government’s commitment to agricultural shows in Roscommon.

Average Roscommon rent is up 99% from its lowest point With the release of the latest Daft.ie Rental Price Report the findings show that market rents in the second quarter of 2022 were an average of 12.6% higher than the same period a year earlier.

In Roscommon, market rents were on average 18.1% higher in the second quarter of 2022 than a year previously. The average listed rent is now €980, up 99% from its lowest point.

Overall, rents in Connacht rose 15.6% yearon-year, reflecting very low availability. There were just 65 homes available to rent on August 1st, down 36% compared to a year ago.

The average market rent nationwide between April and June was €1,618 per month, up 3.3% on the first three months of the year.

New tourism signage in Ballyleague unveiled

As has been consistently the case over much of the past decade, the increase in market rents around the country is driven by a further tightening in rental availability. The scarcity of rental homes has been unprecedented over the past year. Compared to 2009, rental availability has fallen by 97% nationwide.

Commenting on the report, Ronan Lyons, Associate Professor of Economics at Trinity College Dublin and author of the Daft Report, said “A resurgent economy over the last year has accentuated the chronic shortage of rental housing in Ireland.”

“The shortage of rental accommodation translates directly into higher market rents and this can only be addressed by significantly increased supply.”

Ballyleague’s new tourism signage, commissioned and erected by Ballyleague Tidy Towns, was recently revealed at an unveiling ceremony, held to recognise the hard work and effort put into this project. The ceremony was hosted by Rev Daniel Udofia MSP. The signage includes a number of finger-post signs between The Ballyleague Marina, the Promenade, and the North Quays areas, which will guide visitors to amenities such as toilets/showers recycling facilities, the ‘Access For All’ boat service etc.

In addition, there is signage pointing towards the 16th century Castle/Tower House and St. Fáithleach’s Well, as well as a new ‘Tourism Information’ sign by the Ballyleague Marina. This sign was produced by Mary Fleming of Rusty Lemon Design, in conjunction with the Ballyleague Tidy Towns committee, and features information on Lough Ree and the biodiversity associated with the lough and surrounding areas. The sign also focuses on visitor attractions and places of interest in both Ballyleague and Lanesborough, in addition to visitor attractions in the wider counties of Longford and Roscommon.

Ifac urge local SMEs to ‘get credit under control’ Ifac, Ireland’s farming, food and agribusiness specialist professional services firm, is advising Roscommon SME and start-up business owners to make sure they avoid poor credit control to ensure their survival.

Julie Burke, National Credit Controller at Ifac said: “I like to think of a

business as a person. At the heart of that business, is credit control. It brings money into the business.

This in turn means it can be pumped back out in many different directions to keep the business alive.

And of course, if it doesn’t, come in, it can’t go out and the business suffers”.

Ifac highlighted common

mistakes businesses make in their first five years including overtrading, not following up for payment, extending credit limits, and being underprepared for unpredictable events.

The group has advised businesses to follow up consistently on debts, speak to customers when there’s a problem, and put

credit control at the top of the agenda with regular analysis.

Julie continued: “If you are looking to start this process today, my advice is to start with your worst and work backwards. For example, look at all aged debt over six months, pursue every lead, follow up and chase this debt. When

you are satisfied you have done all you can, move the goal post and work from 60 days credit and so on.

The key to this is breaking it down into manageable portions so that you can manage it.

Connacht Rugby Charity Cycle

Creggs RFC are assisting the Connacht Rugby #care4claire charity cycle this Saturday, August 13th.

This cycle has been organised for Claire Carpenter, the partner of Connacht staff member Ross Mannion. In February this year, after a few days of feeling unwell, Claire, who is only 35-years-old, suffered a stroke at her home in Coolaney. After being rushed to the ICU unit of Beaumont Hospital she was placed in an induced coma for over a week following a life-saving operation.

Claire is now thankfully on the road to recovery, however, significant funds need to be raised to allow her to continue her rehabilitation in Dun Laoghaire, and eventually lead an independent life at home.

This cycle is 218kms from the Sportsground in Galway to Sligo RFC with a number of stops along the route. Western Gaels GAA Club in Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon, have kindly allowed their grounds be used as one of the feeding stops on the journey.

Creggs RFC members will help out at this stop which is expected to be between 12 noon and 1 pm.

Stars of the current Connacht team will be there to sign autographs, jerseys and flags for those attending.

Connacht U-18 girls defeat Ulster Ballina RFC were the hosts for three matches of girls’ and women’s rugby last Sunday involving Ulster opponents.

Connacht were the better prepared team on the day and their training over the summer showed in a one-sided win.

It was a busy weekend for Roscommon handball as a number of players played in 60x30 Connacht Finals and St. Coman’s hosted no fewer than eight matches across the weekend.

In the match of the weekend, Lisacul’s Denis Creaton won the Masters singles title in a humdinger against Williamstown’s Ollie Conway.

Played in Conway’s home court, Denis was faster out of the blocks and always stayed slightly ahead to nick the first 21-18.

All seemed to be going his way again in the second as he held a 10-point lead, but Ollie suddenly went into kill mode and reeled off a long sequence of kills that Denis could only admire.

This brought the Galway man right back into the fray and he made it count, taking the second 21-17.

The tie-breaker was nip and tuck the entire way with Denis holding his nerve to win by the tightest of margins 11-10. Denis had beaten Ballaghaderreen’s Campbell Brennan comfortably in their semi-final the previous weekend.

St. Coman’s’ Colm Walshe won his Junior ‘B’ semi-final against Mayo’s Chris Gavigan in Collooney, Co. Sligo. The skilful left-hander was never in any real trouble and exhibited some lovely killing on his way to a 21-5, 21-13 win. His final opponent and date has not been finalised at the time of going to press.

St. Coman’s’ Carragh Kennedy was in top form on Friday last as she took the Minor Ladies Connacht title with an easy victory over Galway’s Emma Kinane. Carragh’s hard-hitting gave her a comfortable win in two straight games.

St. Coman’s’ Rory Carthy lost out to Sligo’s outstanding Cormac Finn in the Minor Boys singles final, which was a repeat of their superb 40x20 encounter last February. Unlike the previous match, this time around Rory had extremely limited preparation, due to county football commitments, but nonetheless he put in a very impressive display against one of the rising stars in Irish handball, giving Finn plenty to think about before succumbing 21-8, 21-9.

In the Connacht finals played in St. Coman’s, two former Roscommon players now sporting the maroon of Galway had mixed results. Ballymoe’s Prionsias Maughan had a titanic struggle with Mayo’s super-fit Michael Ginley in their Golden Masters singles match, before Prionsias emerged victorious on a 21-17, 1621, 11-5 scoreline. Brendan McDonagh returned to play in his hometown but couldn’t repel Mayo’s impressive Jonathon Conroy in their Over 35 ‘B’ singles match. Fitness played a big part in Conroy’s 21-10, 21-11 win.

Two in a row for Thomas!

Thomas Concannon made it two wins on the spin in the Hollywood Bar Superleague last Friday night as he overcame Ciaran Hickey in the final on a 3-0 scoreline.

Top finishing on the night came from Ken Turkington (100), Sean Fleming (105) and Thom-

as Concannon (144). However, the top checkout on the night went to Sean Fleming, who took out a 160 finish.

Ciaran Hickey qualified for the deciding match with a 3-2 win over Les Rawson in the last 16 before beating Sean Fleming 3-1 in the quarter-finals and

Mark Finneran 3-2 in the semifinals.

Concannon, meanwhile, beat Aaron Shannon 3-0 in the last 16, Ken Turkington 3-1 in the last eight and Kieran McCormack 3-0 in the semi-finals.

While Hickey set the early pace in last weekend’s final and

proved to be a constant threat, Concannon’s big scoring visits kept him in front and clinched a convincing 3-0 win.

Horses for Courses Racing this weekend starts this evening (Thursday) with a national hunt card in the sunny southeast at Tramore off at 5.30 pm, the first of the four-day summer festival. There is a flat card at Leopardstown featuring the Group 3 Desmond Stakes away at 5.20 pm.

Tomorrow (Friday), is national hunt again in Tramore at 4.50 pm and flat action is at Cork starting at 5 pm.

Saturday racing is on at The Curragh featuring the Group 3 races, the Royal Whip Stakes and the Irish St Leger Trial Stakes at 1.45 pm and day three of Tramore is on the level first race at 4.55 pm. there is a flat card down for decision in Lenebane on Monday evening starting at 5.30 pm.

Saturday sees cross channel racing on ITV, there are five races from Newbury, and two races each from Newmarket and Ripon.

Racing at the Curragh on Saturday opened with Joseph O’Brien training his 1,000th winner as Al Riffa at 1/2f under Dylan Browne McMonagle. The Group 3 Phoenix Sprint Stakes went for export as David Loughnane’s Go Bears Go did go under Rossa Ryan to win.

Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore won the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes, for the 17th time, with Little Big Bear at 13/8. The colt is now ante post favourite for the Guineas at 5/1.

Kilbeggan Review The Saturday Summer Festival took place at Kilbeggan last Saturday with punters shading the layers as four of the seven favourites won. Racing opened with Nikini winning the 2m maiden hurdle for Willie and Patrick Mullins at 4/7.

The Mahon Hospitality Group New York Handicap Hurdle went to a 12/1 shot Tincurra Lad, trained by Willie Martin in Wexford and ridden by James O’Sullivan.

The 2m 3f maiden hurdle saw the favourite Esperti, second in Galway, win for Peter Fahey and Kevin Sexton. Hurdle racing finished with the 9/4 favourite Darver Star, third in the 2020 Champion Hurdle, returning to form to give Gavin Cromwell and Keith

The final two races are both over 1m 4f the first of which is The Murray Ambulance Apprentice Maiden with 23 entries and racing closes with the Sean Cleary Memorial Handicap with the largest entry of 35 horses.

The 3m Kieran Kelly Memorial Handicap was won by the Charles Byrnes trained, Mark Walsh ridden Pairc Na Ngael, again favourite at 9/4.

The 2m 3f Kilmurray’s Homevalue Hardware Handicap Chase went to Arrycan trained by Liam Cusack in Laois with Sean Flanagan in the plate at 5/1. The 2m bumper gave Willie Mullins a double with Hermine coming home in first place under Jody Townend at 5/2 as Patrick rode the disappointing favourite Leitrim Park.

Roscommon Preview Racing opens with a claiming race for 3-Y-Os+ over 1m 2f with 21 entries followed by the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden over 7f.

The third race is the featured Irish EBF Auction Series Race for 2-Y-Os again over 7f and 14 possible runners.

A service to celebrate the life of Lester Piggott will be held in St. Luke’s Church in Chelsea, London on October 27th. Piggott was a giant of the saddle, counting nine Derby winners among his Classic haul and being crowned champion jockey 11 times. He died aged 86 in Switzerland last May and was laid to rest with a private family funeral.

Athlone Athlone has had quite a successful run in recent weeks as they reached four Connacht Area finals.

The Men’s All-Ireland Fourball team unfortunately lost out to Connemara Isles after a titanic struggle in Roscommon last Sunday.

The Ladies’ Senior Foursomes take on Roscommon this Saturday while the Ladies’ Challenge Cup team play Tubbercurry. Both matches will be played in Gort.

The final Area Final takes place on Saturday, August 20th when the Junior Cup team hosts Sligo.

The annual Fundraising Classic takes place on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd of September. It’s open to visitors and all members are asked to support.

Castlerea The Ladies Gala Day was held on Friday, August 5th in and it made for a

wonderful day of golf in ideal weather conditions.

Camógs power to All-Ireland title Tesco All-Ireland U-16 ‘C’ Camogie Championship Final Roscommon 5-17 Armagh 0-3 < SEAMUS DUKE

A devastating first-half display of powerful attacking camogie saw Roscommon sweep to this All-Ireland title in one of the most onesided national finals played at any grade for several years.

When referee Enda Loughnane blew the halftime whistle in Kinnegad last Saturday Roscommon led by an incredible 5-14 to 0-1 and the destination of the title had long been decided. The second half was a much more leisurely affair as Roscommon protected their lead and incredibly just five points were registered in the final

30 minutes of play by both sides.

On a perfect day weather-wise, Roscommon set about their task from the throw in and they totally dominated the play. Kathlyn Egan and Lilly Murray were in control at midfield, while up front Siofra Hession, Hazel Kelly and Tara O’Brien tore the Armagh defence apart with a succession of great scores.

By the 10th minute it was 0-9 to no score with Hazel Kelly on target with five points (four frees). In the 19th minute Alannah Sutton pulled first time from close range to score Roscommon’s opening goal and after that the floodgates opened.

Roscommon scored three further goals in a 60-second blitz from the 23rd minute with Tara O’Brien (2) and Siofra Hession on target as the Armagh challenge crumbled.

The Orchard County got

their only score of the first half in the third minute of injury-time when Naoise Hughes pointed a ’45, but there was still time for the outstanding Hazel Kelly to fire home Roscommon’s fifth goal before the break.

The second half saw a slight improvement from Armagh, but they were never going to threaten Roscommon’s whopping lead and we went a full 21 minutes without a score from either side as the game petered out to it’s inevitable conclusion.

Best of an outstanding Roscommon team on the day were goalkeeper Andrea Fallon, midfielders Egan and Murray and clinical attackers Kelly (who was awarded player of the match), Hession, and O’Brien.

After the game joint Roscommon manager Sean O’Brien said he was delighted with the way his side had played.

“We were expecting a tough battle today, and when you see what happened in the second half we knew Armagh could be competitive. But look, they didn’t settle in the first half and we did and that was the difference. We knew that if we opened up and played

like we know we can play we would be hard to beat and that’s what happened today,” he said.

“We got some great scores in the first half and our teamwork was excellent. This side has no real star players and they work very well as a team and it

showed today. To score 5-17 in any game is phenomenal.

“When we played them (Armagh) earlier in the year the pitch was wet and the conditions were different and we came out of that game winning by four or five points but it was a bat-

Pearses lay down an early marker SFC weekend roundup

Hodson Bay Hotel SFC (Group A) Oran’s narrow win against Roscommon Gaels puts them in pole position in this group (see match report). In the other game, Elphin and Michael Glavey’s were neck and neck until Stuart Daly scored a match-winning goal for Glavey’s with six minutes left on the clock. Andrew Glennon scored five points for Glavey’s.

Group B Boyle were the emphatic winners against Western Gaels. Cian Smith’s side did the damage in the first half with goals from Daire Cregg (2) and Donie Smith.

Indeed, Cregg scored a personal total of 2-5 on the night in what was an impressive performance. The Gaels’ came back well in the second half helped by a goal from Finbar Cregg, but it wasn’t enough.

In Johnstown, two bad defensive errors

by St. Faithleach’s in the final quarter decided their match against Clann na

nGael. The Ballyleague side were doing well up to that point and they actually led at half-time by a point (0-8 to 0-7). However, two mistakes resulted in goals for Cathal Shine and Josh Lennon and that saw the home side victorious.

Group C Performance of the weekend came from the defending Roscommon and Connacht champions Pádraig Pearses, who swatted away the challenge of Tulsk with a 16-point win. Tom Butler scored the only goal of the game but it was a commanding display from the champions who have put down an early marker that they will be the team to beat again this year.

St. Brigid’s withstood a second-half comeback from Strokestown to open their campaign with a win in Kiltoom.

Ben O’Carroll (0-8) and Shane Cunnane (0-5) were outstanding for Brigid’s on the night. However, Diarmuid McGann was in flying form for Strokestown and he scored a superb goal in the second half as ‘The Town’ staged a revival which just came up short in the end.

Group A The game of the weekend in the intermediate championship was at Enfield where St. Croan’s and Creggs ended in a draw (1-14 to 2-11) after a thriller. An early goal from Enda Conneran helped

Creggs into a two-point lead at the break.

Damien Goggins got a goal for Croan’s mid-way through the half but Conneran got his second goal for Creggs on 40 minutes. Croan’s looked to have won the match late on but points from Ronan Dowd and a late free from Shane Dowd

rescued Creggs.

A late goal from Cian Murray was enough to see off a battling Kilmore as Fuerty started their campaign with a win in Kilmore. Paul Garvey was influential as Kilmore fought tooth and nail against a fancied Fuerty side. But Murray struck

late to give Fuerty the win in what will be a very difficult group for all sides.

Group B

Championship favourites St. Dominic’s saw off Shannon Gaels at Tulsk after an enjoyable encounter. Darren Donnelly

made a ‘man of the match’ contribution scoring 1-10 as the Knockcroghery men held off a Shannon Gaels side who played well on the night. Dominic’s were without Keith Doyle, Jack Lohan and Daire Keenan.

In the local derby at Dr. Hyde Park, St. Brigid’s were too good for St. Aidan’s in an entertaining clash. Brigid’s sowed the seeds of victory when they led 1-8 to 0-2 at half-time and despite an Aidan’s revival after the break the Kiltoom men held on for a comfortable win.

Castlerea St. Kevin’s produced an impressive second-half display to overwhelm Kilbride at O’Rourke Park.

Adam McDermott was the Castlerea star on the day scoring 1-6. Éire Óg pipped Clann na Ngael at James Timothy Park. The home side, for whom Conor Cox scored 0-8 on the day, led by 0-7 to 0-3 at half-time. But Clann came back well in the second half and goals from Niall Connaughton and Shane Gavin saw them back in the hunt and it took a late Liam Creaton point to settle the match by the minimum margin.

The spoils and the local bragging rights belong to Oran, at least for now, after they prevailed by two points against their neighbours Roscommon Gaels, in a tense and closely fought encounter played in perfect weather condi-

tions before a big crowd at Rockfield on Friday night.

Oran were marginally the better team and they led almost all the way through. They were more dangerous up front and in Charlie Carthy they had a match winner from play and frees. At the other end, Roscommon Gaels struggled to get scores and their total of ten wides tells its own story.

There were far too many mistakes on both sides to label it as a football classic; nevertheless the outcome was in doubt right up to the final whistle. Indeed, The Gaels’ best player, Mark

Healy, had a goal chance in the dying seconds, which would have given his side a dramatic win but the ball was cleared and Oran survived.

The sides shared four points in the opening ten minutes but by the 23rd minute Oran raced into a six-point lead (1-5 to 0-2) with Carthy prominent up front for the home side. He kicked three points (two frees) and set up a great goal for Ciaran Lawless and it was looking good for Billy Donnellan’s side at that stage.

But Frankie Dolan switched Mark Healy into full forward and the Gaels got back into the match almost immediately. Healy set up Richard Walsh for a super goal in the 26th minute and John McManus clipped over a fine point in first-half injury-time. But Oran were three ahead at

the break (1-6 to 1-3) after Gearoid Keenan was on target just before the short whistle.

The Gaels narrowed the gap to one with points from Kieran Kilcline, Richard Walsh (frees) and Mark Purcell (which was a goal chance), but Oran kicked on again and led by 1-12 to 1-8 by the 61st minute with points from Gearoid

Keenan and Shane Walsh.

The Gaels never gave up the ghost and Joey O’Malley bundled home a goal in the 63rd minute to narrow the gap to the minimum but Carthy settled the home side’s nerves when he converted from 30 metres in the 5th minute of time added on.

Oran will be very happy to have put one over on their

near neighbours but they will have to stop giving the ball away needlessly if they want to progress in the championship this year.

Thomas Fetherston, Ciaran Lawless, Michael Staunton and Shane Walsh played well for them but Charlie Carthy was their ace in the pack and he was outstanding from play and frees.

For the Gaels, Mark Healy

was by far their best performer on the night. James Fetherstone was excellent between the posts too and made a couple of superb saves. Senan Lambe, Richard Walsh (second half) and Kieran Kilcline did well too, but the town team were very poor up front and they will have to address that failing if they want to progress.

Who’s next for Roscommon hot seat?

Former Dublin Ladies manager, Mick Bohan, has once again been linked to the vacant Roscommon manager’s position.

Oran and Tremane face off < SEAMUS DUKE

The Kepak Senior Hurling Championship continues this weekend and both Tremane and Oran can reach the semi-final as they clash on Saturday. Tremane went down to Athleague last time out while Oran just scraped by Roscommon Gaels. There won’t be much between the teams in this one.

Pádraig Pearses were disappointed to do down to Four Roads last time out but they should get back on track against a St. Dominic’s side, who are struggling for consistency this year.

The old rivals Four Roads and Athleague meet with Four Roads unbeaten and already into the semifinals. They should maintain their winning streak on Sunday.

Interviews to commence < SEAMUS DUKE

The deadline for nominations by clubs in the county for people interested in replacing Anthony Cunningham as the Roscommon senior football manager passed on Tuesday at 5 pm. With no indication as to who is in the frame, speculation is continuing to rage as to who might take up the reins.

A five-person committee will

be chosen by the board executive at the end of this week to commence the interview process. Names mentioned include the former Dublin senior ladies manager Mick Bohan (who was in the frame previously), Pádraig Pearses manager Pat Flanagan, and former Kilmore and Roscommon player Don Connellan, who has been a big success with Moycullen in Galway in recent years. However, it

would be fair to say that there is no obvious candidate to replace the manager who stood down surprisingly last week after four years in the job.

The post is certainly an attractive one, with Roscommon in Division One of the National Football League in 2023, and several talented young players ready to step up to the senior ranks, including players who were involved with the 2021 U-20 team that reached the

All-Ireland final.

However, the appointment will have to be made quickly, as the club championships have already started. With a packed calendar in 2023 on the way, preparations for the new season will have to start almost immediately.

The Roscommon People contacted Roscommon County Board on Tuesday on the matter but no one was available for comment.
