The 300-year war, and the big return to an outdoor pint!

Cycle to Work Scheme Please explain the cycle to work scheme in simple terms. I understand that a cycle to work scheme was introduced in recent years whereby employers could assist employees in the purchase of a bicycle. Is this correct?

The Cycle to Work Scheme is a tax incentive scheme which aims to encourage employees to cycle to and from work. Under the scheme employers can pay for bicycles and bicycle equipment for their employees and the employee then repays the employer through a salary sacrifice arrangement of up to 12 months. The employee is not obliged to pay any tax, PRSI or the Universal Social Charge on the repayments.

The scheme applies to new bicycles, bicycle helmets, lights, mirrors, locks and chains, pumps, puncture repair kits, reflective clothing and other cycling paraphernalia.

Generally, the employee will select the bicycle and equipment themselves, up to a limit of €1,250 (€1500 in the case of pedelecs or ebikes) and the bicycle shop will invoice the employer directly for the cost. The tax exemption only applies if the employer pays for the bicycle, it does not apply if the employee pays for the bicycle and is subsequently reimbursed by the employer.

The employee then repays their employer with deductions made from their gross salary. Employers may also buy the bicycle and equipment and not require employees to refund them.

The bicycle must be used in whole or in part for travel between an employee’s home and normal place of work.

Employers are not obliged to participate in the scheme. In the event that an employer does agree to participate they must offer the scheme to all their employees and not just a select few.

But it will be over 100 hours by then!

Well, we’ve waited over 400 days!

Now THAT’S silly!

It was a war OF SORTS…between the Netherlands and the Isles of Scilly. It was deemed to be a war for 335 years in fact, until peace was declared in 1986.

PEACE DECLARED? But there was no war!

Oh no, there WAS a war…just no blood.

Oh dear!

(They pause to imagine all the ‘war’ stories that must have been passed from generation to generation in the Scilly Isles) Anyways, as I was saying, it will be over 100 hours by Fri… Huh? You’re suggesting we go for an outdoor pint on FRIDAY! Yep, can’t wait!

That’s MY POINT! The outdoor dining will be back about 100 hours by then! This is torture!

No, my friend, we need to prepare! We need to savour it when it happens! Friday evening it is!

PREPARE? I’m SO thirsty!

My friend, you need to have you stuff in order!

Huh? Let’s just do one more pause first…

Green light for N5 Project!

Formal approval for Ballaghaderreen to Scramogue Road < DAN DOONER

The Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan yesterday (Wednesday) announced that the N5 Ballaghaderreen to Scramogue Road Project has been approved

by Cabinet and will now progress to the construction phase.

The project involves the construction of approximately 34 kilometres of new single carriageway road that will extend the existing N5 Ballaghaderreen Bypass to Scramogue, bypassing Frenchpark, Ballinagare, Tulsk and Strokestown.

Provision will also be made for pedestrian and cyclist facilities with the project estimated to cost €200 million and taking three years to complete.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy welcomed the news, saying the new infrastructure would open up north, east, and west Roscommon and provide an “economic bounce”.

He added that the new pedestrian and cycling provisions would be a major boost to local communities.

Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan described it as a “phenomenal Government investment in County Roscommon” and said it would make the N5 safer for people travelling on the route while also speeding up journey times.

“I know from Fine Gael Councillor Liam Callaghan in the area how much this will mean to the local community to keep people safe on our roads. The completion of the new N5 road is scheduled to take three years. It’s been many years coming but now we have dedicated Government funds and I’m delighted to support this project,” she said.

Deputy Kerrane said: “Water outages have been an issue in a number of parts of Ballaghaderreen for many years, however in recent months, they became very frequent, causing huge disruption – especially during Covid-19.

I have engaged with a number of residents affected, including those in the Knocknacunny area who have been especially affected.

“On meeting with Irish Water last January to push for these upgrade works to be prioritised, Irish Water acknowledged that there had been a number of outages in the Ballaghaderreen area over a period of three months, last year.

“Irish Water and Roscommon County Council began works on a 2km stretch of problematic old mains between Lung River and Cooney’s in Tibohine earlier this week.

This will see the pipes replaced and will restore greater water services to both Tibohine and Ballaghaderreen.

There will be minor roadworks on this stretch of the N5 and the works will continue until the end of August.

“This is welcome news for Ballaghaderreen and I thank Irish Water for keeping me updated as these upgrade works begin”, concluded Kerrane.

‘Our Voice FM’ hits the airwaves in Strokestown < DAN DOONER

‘Our Voice FM’, a new Internet radio station run by the Brothers of Charity, was officially launched in Strokestown on Friday morning last.

The station, which will feature volunteers including Brothers of Charity staff and those who avail of services, will broadcast across the world from a brand-new studio on Elphin Street in the town.

A production team of six will oversee programming and Brothers of Charity employee John Nugent, who also presents ‘In The Lobby’ on First Dance FM, will be lending his broadcasting experience to the project.

Dublin native John, who has been working with the Brothers of Charity for the last 14 years, outlined the aims of Our Voice FM to the Roscommon People at

last Friday’s launch party.

“Our job is to train people in broadcasting and presenting and find out what topics people are interested in and design programmes around that,” he said.

“It’s all about giving people a platform and featuring people in the community who haven’t had their voices heard”.

John presents the 11 am to 1 pm Friday programme with Patricia Carolan, who made a very successful broadcasting debut on last Friday’s launch show.

“There has been a huge takeoff in Internet radio stations and the reaction to Our Voice FM has been great so far,” he added.

Brothers of Charity Team Lead, Audrey Murphy, said the umbrella organisation has given full backing to the new venture.

“It’s all about allowing our people’s voices to be heard

and giving them a platform for their interests and passions,” she said.

“Our staff will partner with some of the talented people in our services and they will gain great experience in producing and presenting radio shows”.

Audrey said the Roscommon manager of Brothers of Charity services, Jody Healy, and Area Manager Padraig O’Rourke had also been brilliant in supporting the project.

She added: “Money raised from our café and secondhand shop and The Hub in Strokestown goes towards developing projects for the people we support.

“Without people you have nothing and we are so blessed here with the community support we have received”.

The local Town Team has also lent its backing to the project and so too

has the local community and public representatives including Senator Eugene Murphy, who himself has broadcasting experience.

“It’s fantastic to see this new radio station being launched. As you know, in my own career I would have a huge interest in broadcasting. This is a special time for what is a fantastic project,” Senator Murphy said.

“I wish them every success and it’s wonderful to see everyone so enthused by it. This is exactly the type of project I’d like to see progressed”.

Mark, who works in Brothers of Charity residential services, says there’s lots to look forward to this summer.

“Our aim is to interview people around the county and hear all about their sports stories,” he said.

“Each week we will be visiting a different GAA club in order to feature them on the show – that’s 33 in all! Myself and Kevin are joined on the sports team by Tommy Heaney and Peter Dolan and we will be discussing all the weekend sport,” he said.

Mark has a huge interest in sport and plays his football for St. Joseph’s in Kilteevan. When it comes to sporting debate, he will be kept on his toes by co-presenter Kevin Carroll.

Kevin is a big soccer and GAA supporter and cheers on local teams Kilbride and Strokestown United.

He said he is looking forward to a summer of sport and has already predicted Portugal to win the European Championships!

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK A column by Roscommon People editor Thursday Finally, we caught up with ‘Friends: The Reunion’, which we’d recorded.

It was entertaining enough, without being brilliant. I’d have some issues with the format, but as a sentimental journey for all involved in the show – and for millions of fans worldwide – it was a TV success, an emotional experience even.

Although its ten-year run ended in 2004, the show is enduringly popular, and now has millions of devoted fans who weren’t even born when Friends was first aired. Today, reruns are incredibly popular. Our daughters all love it. I’ve watched the odd episode in recent years and I must say it has aged really well.

Back to the reunion, and a format which I felt was unsatisfactory. The reunion was based outdoors, beside the fountain which features in the iconic opening scenes. There was a socially distanced audience. All six stars were present. Show host James Corden was fawning during the mostly embarrassing exchanges.

For their reported 5m dollars (each) appearance money, the cast members chatted to Corden, re-enacted some classic scenes (the lines at least), reminisced fondly, and spent much of the day visiting the Friends’ set, reconstructed for the occasion.

There has been much comment on how well or otherwise the passage of time has impacted on the stars. I was shocked and saddened by the sight of a clearly out of sorts Matthew Perry (Chandler). The actor, who has had addiction issues, looked lost. It was very sad. The other cast members all looked well, and all six seemed very happy to be meeting up. Matt LeBlanc (who played Joey) stole the (reunion) show, with a few funny quips and an infectiously good-humoured attitude.

Friends was a brilliant show, a big part of the lives of millions of people.

There were aspects of this reunion which were sad, most obviously the evidence of Perry’s decline. I suspect that time’s ruthless march was on the minds of cast members and viewers.

Still, it was nice to see that great cast together again. Friends meant a lot to millions of people from 1994 to 2004; its already great legacy is enhanced even further by the fact that it

Today, the young Castlerea boxer realised her greatest dream. Aoife, the European middleweight champion, qualified for the Olympic Games (in Tokyo) with a superb victory in the qualifiers in Paris, defeating Poland’s Eizbieta Wojik. She is now an Olympian, and, assuming the Games go ahead later this year, will represent Ireland in the greatest show on earth. It’s a huge achievement for Aoife, an honour for her family, and a source of great pride for the people of Castlerea, and for Roscommon people everywhere.

Friday It was just after 3.30 pm as we drove into Carrick-on-Shannon from the Boyle side. All was quiet and serene. Ray D’Arcy was chortling on the radio, people were walking their dogs, the cruisers, moored at the local jetties, were as enticing as ever. If there was a ‘British Bobby’ from the 1960s here, he’d be entitled to say ‘Nothing to see here…move along’.

Then we saw it. An extraordinary sight. Startling evidence of a phenomenon which we had assumed to be almost extinct. It was like going back in time; this was some sort of a twilight zone being revisited. We could hardly believe our eyes.

But it was real. From the minibus, a procession of ladies (or ‘hens’) in full hen party attire. It was Carrick’s past somehow returning. They seemed to be in great spirits, undaunted by the fact that the pubs were still closed.

Presumably they were heading for the hotel, where, as residents, they could party the night away. The intriguing merging of the old normal and the so-called new normal continues.

Sunday The front page of the Irish edition of The Sunday Times has a photo of Gardai with batons in Dublin city centre, accompanied by the headline: ‘Gardai under fire after baton-charging drinkers’. The front page of the Sunday Independent has a photo of young people enjoying drinks in Dublin city centre, accompanied by the headline: ‘Happy days are here again’. Go figure!

(Mind you, as a newspaper editor, I can appreciate how this can happen!).

Later on Friday Naturally, I struggle to watch an entire Republic of Ireland soccer international these days; this is not exactly a golden age. Besides, Andorra v Ireland ain’t box office. There was, however, a fascination in seeing how we’d fare, post the shocking defeat to Luxembourg (Andorra are also minnows). I noted it was 0-0 at half-time this evening. Oops. I went and did something constructive, and when I returned to check the score, I saw that Andorra were leading. Wow! I imagined the explosive fall-out that would follow another humiliating defeat. When I returned ten minutes later, Ireland were 2-1 up. Troy Parrott had scored twice.

After our 4-1 win, I listened to analysis on Off the Ball (Newstalk). Parrott may have tended to our wounds, but the boys on OTB were sick as parrots. I love this show, but I was

really taken aback by their negativity.

Okay, Ireland may have played poorly for an hour, and embarrassingly gone 1-0 behind, but…here’s the issue: for years we’ve been told that it’s results that count. Ireland were rightly criticised when they recently went several games without a win – or a goal. This evening, they won a match, and scored four goals. If it’s results that count, manager Stephen Kenny was entitled to expect some respite from the critics.

Imagine if Parrott had hit the crossbar twice (instead of scoring two). Imagine if we’d lost 1-0 and if a supporter of Kenny’s argued that we could have

won, that we’d been unlucky to hit the woodwork twice. The pundits wouldn’t have entertained it. “It’s all about results, not what might have been” we’d have been told. Well, tonight Ireland did score four times, and they won the match. I’m not even a fan of Kenny’s, but fair is fair!

Naturally, I just skip over those pages and move on…

Tuesday The Republic of Ireland draw 0-0 away to Hungary in the latter’s last game before Euro 2020, which kicks off on Friday (a year late).

It’s a good result for Stephen Kenny, a challenging one for his critics, and a great one for me, as it means I don’t have to alter or update what I wrote under ‘Friday’.

Lough Funshinagh overflow pipe works begin O’Donovan to visit the area < DAN DOONER

Flood relief works have commenced at Lough Funshinagh this week following the recent decision to install an overflow pipe in order to protect homes and farmland at Ballagh in south Roscommon.

Following a visit last week to Cootehall to view the newly opened John McGahern Museum, Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works Patrick O’Donovan, confirmed that he would visit Lough Funshinagh in the coming days.

“Lough Funshinagh is one issue that has been lingering around for a long time. One of the first things I did upon taking office was to write to the CEO of Roscommon County Council Eugene Cummins to clear up any ambiguity in terms of ‘legal line of sight’ when it came to works. I made it clear that he was the legal agent with responsibility.

“I also made it very clear that we would support Roscommon County Council and we took the initiative to remove any uncertainty around cost benefit analysis.

“I want to pay tribute to Eugene Cummins… a lot of work has been going on behind the scenes in recent months.

This is a Roscommon County Council led project and the CEO has the full support of the OPW to do what he wants to do,” he said.

The Minister of State accused some politicians of turning the Lough Funshinagh flooding into a “political football” but said that the local authority would be supported with “plant and machinery, human resources and finances” as work progresses.

In last week’s Roscommon People (edition dated 4/6/21) a business person based in Ballaghaderreen (who provided their name but asked for it to be withheld) wrote a ‘Letter to the Editor’ taking issue with the position of Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane and Sinn Féin councillor Michael Mulligan on the Ballaghaderreen Public Realm project. Both Deputy Kerrane and Cllr. Mulligan have requested a right of reply. These are their respective responses…

Kerrane outlines her contacts with local groups in Ballaghaderreen Dear Editor, I write in reply to a letter which appeared in your newspaper in relation to plans for Ballaghaderreen as of June 4th last. Unfortunately, the letter appears to focus less on the plan itself and more on me.

After my election last year, I wrote to a number of business people in Ballaghaderreen who I felt had great experience and knowledge of the needs of Ballaghaderreen, who were not part of any existing committees in the town but who I felt had something to offer.

I deliberately wanted to hear from business people who may not always be heard but I knew cared deeply about the town. I put together a survey and issued it to them, engaging directly with them on their views in relation to what was needed to improve life for everyone in the town.

Since being elected, I have either met with or engaged with several organisations, including both schools in the town, those involved in sports and recreational activities, new businesses both before they were established and afterwards, as well as

community organisations, to name but a few. I have had numerous meetings in relation to the resumption of a childcare service for the town (one of the greatest challenges the town faces) and with LEADER in progressing An Bealach, a multi-million euro regeneration project for Ballaghaderreen.

I have also engaged extensively with Irish Water in relation to water services in the town and with businesses and residents in relation to illegal dumping, including the clearing of a dumping blackspot (for a number of years) at an unfinished estate out the Charlestown Road.

All of this has taken place in adherence with public health advice that has limited us all in meeting and coming together. I provide a full-time office open five days a week in the centre of the town and I make myself available to anyone and everyone in my office both during the week and at weekends.

My office has been inundated with calls from concerned residents and business people in the town since these plans were announced. Those are the views I expressed

in my contribution in Dáil Éireann, however, in doing so, all I have called for and sought in relation to the plans is that there is consultation with those who will be directly impacted by such changes. The same level of consultation as exists for all other rural schemes. All views, for and against, positive and negative, should be heard, including the views of the anonymous concerned business person.

‘Anonymous letter writers are cowards’ Dear Editor, Normally I would not reply to an anonymous letter, because a person that won’t sign his/her name are only cowards, and often troublemakers. What I and Claire Kerrane TD (not Kirrane, as spelt at one point in the letter) have said is well documented in the newspapers, on Facebook and on radio - and we are well able to stand behind it.

The letter writer asked who gave us permission to speak and represent the business people. Very simple - the business people and residents. I happen to be Chairperson of the Town Centre Traders and represent 28 rate/taxpayers. You are obviously not a member. Claire Kerrane

TD has met with a vast array of people and organisations in her short time as a TD. I cannot for the life of me figure out where Sinn Féin has stalled progress in neighbouring towns, but you must be one of those people who blames Sinn Féin for everything.

As regards the town planners, it would be just good manners if they met with all of the traders and residents, not just a few chosen ones. Your letter is quite nasty and I will not be replying to Mr or Mrs ‘Name Withheld’ in the future.

Arts Centre celebrates Cruinniú na nÓg!

Free family events this weekend This year’s Cruinniú na nÓg, a day of free creativity for children and young people, takes place on Saturday, June 12th and Roscommon Arts Centre have two wonderful familyfriendly events taking place on the day. Both events are free and will take place online via roscommonartscentre.ie.

The first event on the day is a children’s theatre performance called An Ant Called Amy, written and performed by Ballaghaderreen native, Julie Sharkey (see interview on page 10).

This is suitable for children aged 5 to 8 years and is available from 9 am on Saturday, June 12th and Sunday, June 13th.

Also on Saturday, June 12th, the Arts Centre in partnership with the Live Network will present Sarah Bowies’ Observational Storytelling from 12 pm. Sarah is a cartoonist, writer, and co-founder of The Comics Lab. In this online tutorial, suitable for ages 12+, Sarah will show you how to take ordinary, everyday life and turn it into material for compelling storytelling!

This as an opportunity for young people to look beyond the surface of our seemingly mundane lives, and find the potential stories within. She will explore different ways of observing – observing ourselves (our moods, thoughts, activities and conversations); observing others (family members, neighbours, strangers, wildlife and pets), and observing our environment (our homes, our local park, the supermarket, the weather); looking at how to edit these observations and mould them into shape, as complete short stories in themselves, or springboards for longer fiction pieces.

Sarah is the co-founder of Ireland’s first Graphic Short Story Prize in partnership with The Irish Times. Her ‘Socially Distanced’ comic strip, an observational look at life in a pandemic, updates weekly on Instagram at: i@sarah__bowie and her latest picture books are available online.

Both events will be available to watch for free on www.roscommonartscentre.ie from Saturday, June 12th.

This Saturday, June 12th, the Arts Centre in partnership with the Live Network will present Sarah Bowies’ Observational Storytelling from 12 pm.

Julie Sharkey presents ‘An Ant Called Amy’ < DAN DOONER

Criunniú na nÓg, promoting creativity outdoors and online in County Roscommon, takes place this Saturday and Sunday (12th and 13th) and the opening event is a children’s theatre performance called ‘An Ant Called Amy’, written and performed by Ballaghaderreen actor, writer and drama facilitator, Julie Sharkey.

Julie says the play, which has been filmed for an online audience by Roscommon native Emma Brennan, is a poignant story with an important message for children aged 5 to 8 as well as

older audience members. “‘An Ant Called Amy’ came about in 2017 and 2018 when I was Artist in Residence at Roscommon Arts Centre. I had the opportunity to do a bit of writing and so wrote about a very busy little ant who must learn to slow down.

“This is a 30-miinute story about a hard-working ant called Amy who deals with grief by keeping herself busy. She doesn’t stop to deal with things that are happening in her life and when she wins ‘Employee of the Month’ she works even harder until it all comes falling down. There

are some lovely characters in the story including Amy’s brother Andy and a brown spider too,” Julie says.

The play is directed by Raymond Keane and produced by Natalie Wolde with a cinematic score by Cork composer Irene Buckley and support from Mikel Murfi and Martin Drury.

Julie says it was a very different experience to perfoming live but she was “blessed” to be given the opportunity.

“It has been different and we are all hoping we can get back out on the road and performing in the flesh again.

But this has been a special journey through Covid-19 lockdowns and the story itself will be very relevant to many children who have been unable to see their grandparents or who have lost loved ones,” she said.

Julie paid a glowing tribute to the staff at Roscommon Arts Centre for their “incredible” support and said the production would not have been possible without it.

‘An Ant Called Amy’ is supported by Creative Ireland. It is suitable for children aged 5 to 8 years and will be available from 9 am on Saturday and Sunday (June 12th and 13th).

John completes ‘Suck Valley Way in a Day’ Congratulations to Roscommon man John Fitzmaurice, who completed his ‘Suck Valley Way in a Day’ fundraiser in aid of Mayo Roscommon Hospice Palliative Care Nursing Services on Saturday last.

John, a Castlerea native who now lives in Fuerty with his family, has raised over €8,000 so far on his GoFundMe page ‘Suck Valley Way in a Day’. Well done John!

There were local winners at the 21st National Student Media Awards (Smedias) which took place virtually on Wednesday, June 2nd.

Roscommon native, Paddy Henry, took home Collaborative Journalist of the Year for NUIG, alongside Ellen O’Donoghue.

Paddy is the Editor of SIN (Student Independent News), NUIG’s student newspaper. He is a final year Journalism student in NUIG. Meanwhile, University of Limerick student Ivan Smyth from Ahascragh, who recently completed work experience with the Roscommon People, was named as Sports Journalist of the Year for his work with the Limerick Voice (UL’s student newspaper).

Hosted by Oxegen.ie, the Smedias allows students to showcase their work in journalism, radio, and TV production, and writing to an impressive line-up of judges national newspaper editors and high-profile TV and radio presenters.

Ciara Mahon, Manager of Oxygen.ie said: “We are delighted to have another successful year of the Smedia’s, even in the unprecedented situation that we are all living in today. This year’s standard was phenomenal and we were so impressed with the hard work of these students this year, especially as there was a big jump in entry submissions.

Funding for 14 staff at e-Mental Health Hub

newsbriefs Responsible Dog Ownership course in Ballyleague A five-week Responsible Dog Ownership training course begins this Saturday, June 12th at Ballyleague Tennis Courts.

Classes for puppies (from 12 weeks to one-year-old) being at 10 am and classes for adult dogs take place from 11.15 am to 12.15 pm with Kath Bell Dog Training Ireland.

Dogs will be trained by accredited trainers Andy Bell, Jo Bell, Chris Bergin, and Katie Bell.

Due to Covid-19 places on the course are limited and all bookings must be made in advance by calling 0866093287 or 090-6452947. Participating dogs must be up to date with vaccinations.

The initiative is organised by Roscommon town native, Helen Dolan, in response to increased dog ownership during the pandemic and growing demand for effective dog training.

Both Helen and Kath Bell Dog Training Ireland have acknowledged the support of Roscommon County Council, Cllr. Kathleen Shanagher, Theresa McCabe, Education Officer, Roscommon County Council, and Litter Warden, Annette Donlon.

Minister of State with Responsibility for Mental Health and Older People Mary Butler has now confirmed that funding of €1.4 million will be allocated this year for 14 posts at the e-Mental Health Hub in Castlerea after concerns were raised as to the status of services at the facility.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy said an email from the Minister of State confirmed that €1.4 million in funding was now in place.

Senator Murphy said he was happy to be able to “provide evidence of this fact in writing in a bid to rubbish other suggestions floating around in the media”.

The news comes after the HSE had issued a response to a parliamentary question from Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane stating that funding had been an issue at the €2.6 million facility which opened just last year.

Part of Minister of State Mary Butler’s email reads: “The release of funding is imminent and local services have been ap-

proved to proceed with developments this year”.

The Minister of State added that approximately €400,000 had been spent on refurbishment and €400,000 spent on staffing so far.

Meanwhile, local Independent TD Denis Naughten said it is frustrating that it has taken a full year for recruitment to commence at the facility.

“It is deeply frustrating that it has taken 12 months since the opening of the new refurbished facilities in Castlerea but it is now hoped that recruitment and the filling of these posts can proceed without further delay as there is no doubt that demand for such services has increased as a direct result of Covid-19,” Deputy Naughten said this week.

“The Castlerea e-Mental Health Hub has been developed on the site of the former Rosalie Unit on the Knock Road and this investment of €1.4m in full year staffing costs will be a significant boost to mental health services for both young people and older people not just in County Roscommon but across the region.

“While funding was provided last year to commence the recruitment of staff, there was a significant shortfall in the funding needed to fill the required staffing posts in both services”.

Deputy Naughten said the funding would be split between full year staffing costs for a new multidisciplinary team for the CAMHS Connect service and a full year of staffing costs for the Psychiatry of Later Life Day Hospital.

“This (CAMHS Connect) is part of a new e-mental health initiative to provide vastly improved patient experiences, particularly at out-of-hours times where currently a young person presenting to a facility with no on-duty psychiatrist must wait until one becomes available the following morning,” he said.

“A further €700,000 in full year staffing costs is being allocated for the Psychiatry of Later Life Day Hospital that would operate five days per week and serve people over 65 from Roscommon and North Galway”.

Back at the football as country reopens!

It’s Monday morning of the Bank Holiday weekend and after

months of lockdown, there is a sense of excitement in the air as things are finally about to return to a semblance of normality. In the words of the national media, the country is about to reopen again.

It’s as if we are getting a second spring; we’re about to experience a new birth and a whole load of new life, and people are definitely in a much more positive and upbeat mood.

Out here in Creggs, we don’t

Sympathy for victims of seagull attacks One of the casualties of the recent cyber attack on the HSE was the fact that a lot of normal medical events were postponed.

As such, an MRI that a member of my family was to have went by the wayside the very first day after the attack. However, last Thursday evening we got word to head for the old regional hospital in Galway for 5 o’clock in the evening to get the job done.

We left the house at three and just about made it with a few minutes to spare.

I told you a couple of weeks ago about another trip I had there, and how I was pleasantly surprised to find that the car parking was free. The sad news is that on Thursday, all was back to normal – the parking metre was working fine, and well able to clock up the charges!

Anyway, my patient went in for the MRI and as I stayed in the car, my eyes were drawn to two lads doing some work up on the fourth floor of the hospital. They were wearing Hi Vis jackets, and became a magnet for a number of seagulls flying around. I have often heard of dive-bombing seagulls in seaside resorts, and how they attack unsuspecting people

– usually those with some sort of food in their possession – but until Thursday I had never actually seen them in action. I can tell you now it’s a very scary sight.

A number of them kept flying at the two lads who were obviously terrified, and after a few minutes of trying to shoo the birds away, the lads gave up and ran for their lives. Whatever work they were meant to do was put on hold, and all I could see was the lads reaching the safety of the nearest door and disappearing inside, never to reappear (while I was there at least).

Up to now, I used to treat such incidents with a certain amount of amusement, but I have to say that the whole thing looked very frightening. The next time I read of a dive-bombing attack by seagulls anywhere, I will have more sympathy for the victims than I used to have.

The funny thing is that even after the lads disappeared, the seagulls were still doing their thing, so there is no chance that the lads got back out. I wonder are they still in hiding up on the fourth floor in University Hospital, Galway, or did they figure out a way to make their escape?

have to wait long for the first sign of the new dawn because, at 11 am in Mulhern Park, our footballers are making their first public appearance in more than six months. Even though it is only a challenge match, there is an unusual air of expectation and anticipation about the fixture.

The players in every club around the country must be chomping at the bit to get out on the pitch to show their wares, and now that

100 people can attend matches, it’s as if the shackles have come off and we have a certain amount of freedom back in our lives.

So off I went to Fuerty for the 11 o’clock throw in, and it was obvious that we were all in the same boat.

Quite a decent crowd turned up for a game that was remarkably high in quality and extremely competitive, and a great warmup for both clubs with the

championship looming. Our lads came out on top by a couple of points, but with both sides short a good number of regulars, neither will read too much into the result.

However, the big result for us all was the fact that the game actually took place with spectators in attendance. Hopefully it will be the start of a summer of great sporting action, with so many big national and international events to take place.

When it comes to big international events, there are none as big as the Olympics, and the achievement of Castlerea’s Aoife O’Rourke (daughter of Creggs Rugby legend Kevin and his wife Anne) in qualifying for the middleweight boxing finals in Tokyo ranks up there with the highest achievements of anyone from the west of Ireland in any sport, as she has become the first ever female fighter from west of the Shannon to become an Olympian.

Heartiest congratulations Aoife, well done – as a number of former teammates of your father will testify, he too had a fearsome left hook and powerful body shot. You’re heading for Tokyo later this year to represent yourself, your family, your county, and your country, and I have no doubt you will do so in the best possible way.

Before I leave sport, you may recall that last week I congratulated Denis Buckley on the occasion of his 200th Connacht Cap – a feat that made him one of only three players to reach such

an amazing milestone. I was saddened to hear later that there is no sentiment in professional sport, as only thirty seconds into his 200th game he suffered a serious leg injury that resulted in his having to leave the field. The injury may now mean he will miss a good part of the upcoming rugby season.

On the same subject (again showing how unforgiving sport at the highest level can be), Leinster’s Andrew Porter, also a prop forward, is going to miss out on what might well be his only chance to be a British and Irish Lion, as he too got injured in Leinster’s game last Friday night against Glasgow, and will miss this summer’s Lions’ tour to South Africa.

To miss out on what players regard as the highest accolade in rugby this side of the world, becoming a Lion, is a huge blow, and so I wish both him and Denis well in their recovery battles. Please God, we will see both back better than ever next season.

One of my favourite pastimes over the last few weeks has been wondering what local pubs would open up on Monday, June 7th and what, if any, efforts they had made to make their premises more welcoming for the outdoor drinker.

In last week’s Roscommon People, reporter Dan Dooner showed us the commendable work done by several publicans around the county, including Carol’s niece, Anouska, who runs Ned’s Bar in Knockcroghery.

Well, the good news is that our two local publicans, Joe Dolan and Mikeen O’Rourke (to give him his full title), have both put in Trojan work. Both places, along with Joe’s other premises, D’Alton’s in Fuerty, are more than ready to accommodate all their thirsty customers. In fact, they are so ready, willing, and able to look after us, that as soon as I have finished this piece, I’m heading for Creggs to sample the first pint of plain I’ve had in more than six months. Slainté!

Finally for this week …

Heartiest congratulations to our niece Anouska’s mammy (and my sister-inlaw) Eucharia, who last week celebrated a special birthday. I am not going to tell you what age she is, but she has once again caught up with me, so you can figure that out for yourself.

Throwback Thursday ... heroes of ‘51

Here’s another photograph from our files, one that reminds us of a special team and a special anniversary. This year marks the 70th anniversary of Roscommon’s victory in the 1951 All-Ireland Minor Football Final. 20 years ago this month, those heroes were honoured at Dr. Hyde Park (on the Golden Jubilee of their win). In that 1951 final, Roscommon defeated Armagh by 2-7 to 1-5. The 50th anniversary celebration at Hyde Park took place on May 18th, 2001. It’s always a pleasure to meet team captain Barry Molloy in Roscommon Town.

They sell everything for the family, from meats to fruit & veg and a full range of eggs and poultry, sausages, rashers, milk, bread, etc.

Roscommon Farm Shop carries a range of organic free range and conventional products and endeavours to suit all needs. Ray said they are always looking for new local products to complement their range. We put some questions to Ray about his business, Roscommon Town, and his well-known passion for the GAA!

How long have you been in business in Roscommon?

I started here with a mobile van just outside on The Square in February 2009. That’s over 12 years ago now.

How time flies by!

What made you make the change to move into a shop?

The mobile was great, and it gave us a strong customer base to build on. We made some great friends over the years. This shop unit here became available and I took the chance to move indoors. It was tough going outside in the cold, wet, wintry days!

How do you see the town centre surviving with all the roadworks that are ongoing at present?

Roscommon town is unique in that is has a lot of quality shops and restaurants/hotels in the town centre. At the moment there’s a bit of disruption but it will be a fine job when it’s finished and hopefully people can bear with it for a while longer.

Will the withdrawal of carparking spaces in the town centre have an impact on trade?

There is great off-street parking on both sides of The Square, both in the Tesco & SuperValu carpark and behind us over at the new civic

buildings. Both of these carparks are within walking distance of the town centre.

Do you see free parking being an advantage for Roscommon town?

Yes, it is good to have free parking, but it should not be abused. The onus is on employers to insist on their employees to park in the offstreet carparks and not to have their vehicles parked for the full day on the main streets.

What’s good about being in business in Roscommon?

Roscommon is a very nice town, there are great people all around us. As I said, I’ve been here for 12 years and have never heard a bad word said…only the finest of people.

You’re involved with the GAA in Roscommon. How do you see the county teams progressing this year?

Yes, we do a bit with the GAA, the ladies are actually going better than the men at the moment. I’ve been following Roscommon football since I was knee-high…back in 1974 I was brought to my first game in Croke Park by my father.

Roscommon were playing Kerry in a league final that went to a replay.

We have travelled the highways and

byways for almost 50 years now in search of the Holy Grail and came so close in 1980 – but the rest is history. The GAA is great for our young people and it is wonderful to see them back on the training pitches. Our local club is Shannon Gaels down in Croghan/Drumlion, just outside Carrick-on-Shannon.

Has Covid-19 had an effect on your business?

The last year has been quite an experience. The shop was unbelievably busy for a couple of weeks last March 12 months. There was

panic buying. Everything was closing down around us and people thought food would go scarce. The overall year has been a challenge on a lot of different fronts. We were open every day and never missed a day, thank God. Thanks to Mary for keeping the doors open and the show on the road. At the moment there is light at the end of the tunnel which is encouraging because I think people have just reached the pin of their collar with restrictions, etc. It’s great to see the vaccine being rolled out and it will give people more confidence.

Have you any plans to extend or develop your shop?

The last year has been all about survival mode. There were mornings when I drove up to Roscommon from Carrick-on-Shannon that I never met a vehicle on the road. People were frightened of this virus and were advised to cut down on their visits to shops, etc. Some were just doing one ‘big shop’ a week in a superstore, other people I wouldn’t have seen in our shop for over a year now through no fault of their own. They were just doing what they were told and staying indoors. We have got great support since we opened the shop here, especially over the last year in difficult circumstances. Some people were happier just to come in, not to be rushed and on a one-to-one level have a few kind words with Mary.

Shopping was a pleasant experience for most people before Covid hit but that has all changed. Hopefully it will come back and will become more relaxed. Online shopping became very popular with the bigger stores over the last 15 months, but people must get out and about again for their mental health and social interaction.

Our meat comes from Gilligan’s Farm just out the road. Molloy’s Bakery supply us with their bread products, milk comes from Aurivo Co-Op, duck eggs are produced in Tourlestrane, Co. Sligo, Velvet Cloud (Dairies) in Claremorris supply us with their yogurt and cheese, honey is produced locally in Strokestown and Knockvicar, Boyle, our goat’s cheese is from Lisa Gillard in Co. Leitrim and Greg Glancy supplies us with his washed Rooster potatoes. All our eggs and poultry are from our own poultry farm in Carrick-on-Shannon. My daughter Karina Gannon produces our Organic Eggs. We like

to source all our products as locally as possible.

What are the most popular products, and the bestsellers?

Gilligan Meats produce a very good product. Irish chicken fillets have a distinctive flavour and texture with nothing added or taken away. Free range and organic eggs and chicken are also a growing market.

Your eggs and chicken seem to be very popular here in Roscommon.

What is so special about them?

What’s the secret of the rich colour and flavour?

Eggs and chicken are our core business. I am the fourth generation of our family involved. The mixed climate and heavy soil cover here in County Roscommon give a distinctive texture and flavour to our products. All of our sheds are traditional flat-bedded units, with small flock numbers spread over multiple sheds. Now it is more important than ever for people to know where their food comes from and they like to source it locally. More people are now looking out for the ‘Bord Bia Quality Assured’ on products, that shows that they have been produced to the highest standard. Eggs and chicken are two products that are very versatile and can be made up into the most creative dishes from the most basic ingredients.

Don’t allow the cry of an injured animal go unheeded!

When I hear about an animal being neglected, abused, or abandoned, I’m filled with fury. As a former animal welfare officer – now a volunteer – I know that incidents of cruelty perpetrated on the most vulnerable and the most innocent of our society is becoming more commonplace. And when I say ‘society’, I mean right here on our own doorstep, readers!

Typically, the animals most at risk of being abused are dogs, cats, horses and livestock, with direct violence being the most prevalent crime. This is followed closely by neglect and abandonment, resulting in thousands of creatures dying horrifically painful deaths year in, year out across Ireland.

Now while direct violence is the most obvious form of mistreatment, animal neglect is a more common type of abuse – and not just by the animal’s owner. I’m talking about neglect by those who see an injured

and suffering little creature, one desperately in need of help, and, instead of doing something, they ignore the poor pet and walk by.

This brings me to Álainn (which means beautiful as Gaeilge – as named by her rescuer). She was beautiful. A beautiful, sentient soul who suffered, and died needlessly.

Last week, one of the volunteers involved with TNR South Roscommon was notified by people from a local village, who reported seeing a cat that was ‘limping across the road’. They explained that kitty ‘was in a bad way’ and being decent, humane individuals, they were concerned. Volunteer Áine answered the call, retrieved the kitty, and, despite the late hour, John Finnegan of Cloverhill Vets – our family’s vet, as it happens – administered emergency treatment to this beautiful little creature.

Sadly, due to the severity of Álainn’s wounds, in a bid to try and save her

precious little life, her damaged leg required amputation. The injury had become infested with maggots; fly larvae that had literally grown inside her decaying body, feasting on her tissue. Her other paws were bleeding badly. I’m not a veterinarian, but I’ve lectured in animal welfare, and I know this infestation did not happen overnight. Therefore I believe (as do my fellow advocates) that long before these kind locals called, someone must have seen Álainn on the street, dragging her broken little body around the village, crying and begging for help. If so, that someone ignored her. Shame on them.

My reason for telling you about Álainn is not to shock you, rather it’s to ask you, nay beseech you, to please, please, if you see an animal in distress, don’t walk by and assume someone else has acted; pick up the phone and call your local rescue or the Gardaí. Don’t allow their cries for help to go unheeded, because to

do so, you are, in my opinion, adding to their pain and suffering.

I believe one of the most powerful tools we have for preventing cruelty to animals – and others – is education. It’s clear that anyone who witnessed Álainn’s plight and walked on could have benefitted from having someone plant the seeds of kindness early in their lives. If they had, I’m certain they’d have been capable of feeling enough compassion for this helpless little creature to the extent that their intervention would have led to the prevention of her death.

Yes – heartbreakingly, this kitty’s injuries were so severe and had gone ignored for so long, that despite everyone’s valiant attempts to save Álainn’s life, (mainly volunteer Áine and wonderful vet John and his staff), she passed over Rainbow Bridge, leaving everyone feeling utterly distraught. I’m sobbing my heart out writing this. I’m also

Roscommon has now taken a major step towards getting back to business, and, it has to be said, normality! In fact, as far as ‘traditional’ pubs are concerned, last weekend was the first time they could reopen their doors since the beginning of this pandemic. Even though our local pubs, coffee shops and restaurants can only provide outdoor

services, (for now), I have to say, as far as their facilities are concerned, the Rossie business fraternity certainly did themselves proud!

Comhghairdeas to everyone on pulling out all the stops when it came to adapting their premises. You couldn’t move for the amount of diners/Bank Holiday revellers enjoying the out-

door heaters, gazebos, shelters and windbreakers, etc. Yes, the wonderful weather was a major factor in getting people out and about, but hey, we must also acknowledge those business owners who clearly went above and beyond to provide what was a comfortable, enjoyable and exciting hospitality experience for all. Roll on July!

mad as hell and wondering what’s so wrong with humanity that some people will only provide help to those who have two legs, caring nothing for those with four?

TNR South Roscommon, run by my good friend Orla Hanley, is not a rescue charity – it’s a trap, neuter and release charity, desperately in needs of funds. However, despite that, when the good people of this particular local village called, volunteer Áine didn’t hesitate. Despite the late hour, she rushed to the scene, and got Álainn to vet John Finnegan and his staff who fought valiantly to save her life. However, had someone called sooner, particularly anyone who spotted this poor creature’s difficulty, it’s very possible that Álainn would be recovering in foster care, preparing for her forever home.

RIP little Álainn, your life mattered to us. We are so sorry we weren’t given the opportunity to save you.

Too much, too young… nine-year-olds are not WAGs in training!

I’m no pearl-clutching conservative, but I have to ask who in their right mind decided it was a good idea to stock ‘sexy’ items of clothing and aim them at children?

Let me explain: high street retail chain New Look (a fashion chain I like) have been facing somewhat of a backlash this week for selling padded bikini bras for little girls in their ‘915’ range. The ‘915’ range means that these specific items are being targeted at nine-year-old to fifteen-yearold girls, and whatever about the upper age limit, in my opinion no nine-year-old needs, nor should be wearing, a padded bra. I mean, what are they…WAGs in training?

In the interest of being fair and balanced, let me say that New Look has defended its products, saying they ‘comply with industry standards’. I’m sure they do, this is a highly reputable retailer. However, these padded bikini bras are highly inappropriate for the simple reason the product is teaching young girls that their only ascribed value is their sexuality and physical sex

appeal, totally excluding all of their other wonderful characteristics.

I believe that when individuals, and in this case, impressionable nine-year-old little girls, are being held to a standard that equates their physical attractiveness above all else, that individual is being sexually objectified.

Maybe I’m getting cranky, but despite the fact I’ve shopped in New Look in the past and will do in the future because they carry good quality, affordable items, I’m afraid that for me, their ‘915 range’ padded bikinis falls under the ‘spectacular fail’ category.

New home needed for Hub Community Café < DAN DOONER

The Hub Community Café in Strokestown, which is run under the auspices of the Brothers of Charity, is looking for a new home in the locality following confirmation that its current premises on Church Street has been sold.

Support worker, Yvonne Reynolds, said the charity is currently looking at other buildings in the hope that the service can continue to be provided in Strokestown.

“We are looking at a few other places in Strokestown. We really want to continue to provide social enterprises for the guys because they come here to work and it’s a great outlet for them,” she said.

“For now, we can provide a day service for the people we support…there are four day services in Strokestown so we will be taking part in them. Ideally, we would be hoping to be relocated somewhere in Strokestown by the end of the year”.

Ezekiel foresees salvation coming to “birds of every kind” – thus, not just to the people of Israel, but also to the Gentiles, who will “take wing” through their new life in Christ. God indeed will “lift high the lowly tree,” as He solemnly promises.

Such salvation surpasses humanity’s most ambitious dreams. And so we express our gratitude in the Psalm: “Lord, it is good to give thanks to you”. It is indeed good, and better still to give thanks with praise. The Psalmist speaks of those who are just upon the earth, but looks to God as the source and measure of justice, of righteousness.

Like Ezekiel, he evokes the image of a flourishing tree to describe the lives of the just. The image, again, suggests the Cross as the measure of righteousness.

The Cross is a sign of contradiction to those who would rather “flourish” in worldly terms. As St. Paul emphasises to the Corinthians, we need courage. Our faith makes us strong, and it is proved in our deeds. He reminds us that we will be judged by the ways our faith manifests itself in works: “so that each may receive recompense, according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil”.

God Himself will empower the works He expects from us, though we freely choose to correspond to His grace. In the prophetic oracles, He scattered the seed that sprang up and became the mustard tree, large enough to accommodate all the birds of the sky, just as Ezekiel had seen. He gave this doctrine to His disciples in terms they were able to understand, and He provided a full explanation. Ballinasloe and Athlone benefit from Sports funding Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has welcomed the fact that Ballinasloe Community Sports Hub is one of ten new activity hubs to be funded as part of a major investment package of €5.9 million announced by Sport Ireland in Dormant Accounts funding.

“Dormant Account Funding will be allocated to establish and develop ten new Community Sports and Physical Activity Hubs, in addition the thirty-six existing hubs.

Ballinasloe Community Sports Hub will benefit from funding of €63,680, while an existing hub at Athlone Regional Sports Centre in Co Westmeath will receive €43,680 in funding, which is most welcome.

“The investment aims to engage communities across the country, focusing on people with disabilities, people who are educationally disadvantaged and from disadvantaged communities,” said Senator Murphy.

“This past year of the pandemic has made us all realise the importance of exercise, fitness, and sports in relation to our physical and mental health and wellbeing so it’s great to see this level of funding for sporting projects. This funding will help make a real difference to communities in Ballinasloe, Athlone and all over the country and will encourage more people to get fit and active by taking part in sports in their local community,” he concluded.

€750,000 for Roscommon regional roads Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan has welcomed €754,000 in funding for regional and local roads in County Roscommon.

This is part of an overall €17.3 million climate adaptation investment programme announced by Minister Eamon Ryan and Minister of State Hildegarde Naughton.

The Fine Gael Senator said: “The Climate Adaptation & Resilience Funds will help repair roads affected by flooding. County Roscommon has received over €750,000 for 13 projects across the county.

“There has been bad flooding in Coun-

ty Roscommon and high priority areas around Lough Funshinagh have been targeted to raise roads and embankments with €140,000 for L2005 and L20051 in Ballagh and €90,000 in Lisphelim.

“We also see €90,000 for Doovoge along by the Shannon in Athlone to raise embankments. Derrycahill, Corboley, Kilbegnett and other regional and local roads also see investment”.

Senator Dolan praised Roscommon County Council for their continued work in maintaining the county’s roads.

newsbriefs Two arrested over alleged Castlerea assaults Gardaí arrested two males in their late teens following an alleged assault which occurred at on Tuesday evening last (June 1st) in Castlerea.

According to Gardaí, a man in his sixties was allegedly assaulted by two males and a number of personal belongings were taken during an incident on Main Street, Castlerea at approximately 9 pm. The man was taken to Portiuncula Hospital for treatment following the incident.

Another man in his twenties was also taken to hospital for treatment following an alleged assault which took place nearby a short time later.

Two males in their late teens were later arrested and both appeared before Ballinasloe District Court on Thursday morning last (3rd). Gardaí are continuing their investigations.

oung Castlerea woman Aoife O’Rourke will represent Ireland in the Olympic Games in Tokyo next month following her sensational performances in the European qualifiers, which were held in Paris last weekend.

Aoife began her weekend with a convincing 4-1 win victory over Viktoryia Kebikava of Belarus, and followed that with her most impressive performance of the qualifiers in beating Polish fighter Elzbieta Wojcik to secure her place at the Tokyo Games which take place from July 23rd to August 8th this year.

Reacting to the Castlerea fighter’s heroics this week, Paddy Sharkey of Castlerea Boxing Club, who has coached Aoife since she began in the sport, says that she has always been incredibly dedicated to training and improving all the time.

“Since the first day she came in here she was so dedicated and focussed.

She trains so hard and she has the talent too,” he said.

Paddy says he knew that Aoife would be a special talent all along.

“I knew straight away that she would be good. I remember when she had just started we went down to a club in Mayo and told them that she was only a novice – they got some

shock when they saw her in action!

“I was talking to Bernard Dunne a few years ago and told him we had a girl in the club that was going to win an Olympic medal. That’s how confident I was about her ability. She is a great girl to coach. She works hard; she’s a great listener, takes direction and wants to learn. Her sister Lisa is a brilliant prospect too”.

The Castlerea coach can now look forward to watching his protégé in action on the biggest stage of them all for amateur boxers.

“She has every chance of winning a medal. I have great faith in her.

It’s brilliant for Castlerea, for Roscommon, and for

Connacht to have her going there”.

Paddy says that Aoife’s success will be a big boost to Castlerea Boxing Club in particular.

“We have about forty kids coming and going here all the time and Aoife’s success is a great help to us. If it means that another few kids come in and train and it gets them off the streets, then it will have been brilliant,” he concluded.

Aoife is the daughter of Kevin and Anne, and sister to Aisling, Áine, Ailish and Lisa (who is another very talented boxer). Dad Kevin is understandably very proud of the achievements of his daughter, but remains very relaxed and laid back about it all too.

“She trains hard and is very dedicated. Boxing is an individual sport and it’s grand if things are going well, but it can be lonely if things go wrong.

Thankfully it’s going well for her. It’s great to have qualified for the Olympics and she will be off in just a few weeks,” he said.

Kevin says that the family watched last weekend’s action at home in Castlerea.

“She finishes her fights strong, and that’s down to the training and hard work that she does. That’s what happened last weekend.

She has her feet on the ground and she won’t get carried away with this,” he added.

Kevin also had a special word of thanks for all the people who have helped Aoife become a success in the ring.

“There are people like Paddy Sharkey and Richie Feeney who have been such a help to Aoife and they deserve great praise for helping her over the years. We will all be looking forward to seeing her in the Olympics now and hopefully it will go well for her,” he concluded.

How Aoife qualified at the Grand Dome…

C

astlerea middleweight boxer Aoife O’Rourke began her weekend in Paris with a 4-1 victory against Viktoryia Kebikava of Belarus.

O’Rourke had too much class for the 35-year-old and secured a 4-1 split decision, picking up a

number of 10-8 rounds along the way.

However, it was in her next bout, on Saturday evening last, against a very difficult opponent, Elzbieta Wojcik of Poland, where Aoife really excelled. Behind on all the judges cards after the first round, she

produced a scintillating final two rounds to secure a unanimous decision and qualification for the Tokyo Games.

The number four seed from Poland had come out all guns blazing in that last round, but the Castlerea woman caught

her with a big right hook that forced a standing count and ended any doubts about who would win their middleweight quarter-final. Four judges scored it 29-27, with the fourth going 29-26.

On Monday, Aoife was narrowly beaten by World

Champion Lauren Price in the semi-finals and had to settle for the bronze medal, but the big prize of a place at the Olympic Games was already secured at that stage and she now will now represent Team Ireland in Tokyo in July.

“The whole town is buzzing. This is a huge achievement for Aoife and she will be an Olympian now for the rest of her life,” he told the Roscommon People this week.

“We want to add our congratulations to Aoife on her truly massive achievement. It’s a huge boost and reward for Castlerea Boxing Club, who were the first users of The Hub when it opened in 2004. It’s also payback for Paddy and Helen

Sharkey because these things don’t happen by accident…they take years of hard work and dedication”.

Benny paid tribute to Aoife’s coaches and also her own “dogged” determination.

“It’s half talent and half dedication and it’s not easy training nights and

through bad weather and difficult days,” he said.

The Hub’s hard-working committee and “unsung hero” Brian Stenson also received glowing praise from their Chairperson.

50 years ago this weekend: Smokin’ Joe’s ‘Fright night’ in Castlerea < PAUL HEALY

A

oife O’Rourke’s brilliant, careerdefining qualification for the Olympics coincides with the 50th anniversary of a visit to Castlerea by a boxing legend, an episode that has gone into local folklore!

Here at your favourite local newspaper, we never tire of recalling the extraordinary appearance in Castlerea of the then reigning World Heavyweight Champion, Joe Frazier, a superb boxer who will forever be linked with the great Muhammad Ali. ‘Smokin’ Joe’ Frazier’s visit to Castlerea wasn’t in a boxing guise, but as part of a bizarre career diversion into the world of singing and entertainment. No doubt to cash in on his celebrity status, Frazier and his band (‘The Knockouts’) went on a tour that included performing in several locations in Ireland. Unfortunately, Frazier’s ‘gig’ in The Casino Ballroom in Castlerea turned into

a night of chaos. Incredibly, the superstar and his entourage arrived in town while he was World Champion, and just a few months after Frazier had defeated Muhammad Ali. There were three Gardaí on patrol duty in Castlerea on the night of 11th of June, 1971. One of them was Garda John Cawley, a Ballina native. I spoke to him this Wednesday about his memories of the night.

“I served in Castlerea from 1969 to 1999. On the night in question, I was in the squad car with Sergeant Pat Mullarkey and Garda Harry Farrell.

“At around 1.10 am we got the word that Frazier and his entourage were arriving. There were huge crowds...I recall there being lots of people gathered at the bridge, in addition to the people inside the ballroom.

“He arrived in a big car, hired from the Shelbourne Vehicle Hire Company.

The vehicle was immediately surrounded by crowds. Straight away we could see that Frazier was afraid, he didn’t know

what to make of the crowds or what might happen...”

John estimates there were about 200 people assembled outside The Casino Ballroom, and 450-500 already inside.

There was chaos outside.

Three vehicles were damaged, eggs were thrown, glass was shattered, and there were reports that one Garda was struck with a stone.

“We shoved people back, trying to let the car get close to the door. In those days it was ten shillings’ admission to attend a dance there, but the price had been increased on the night to one pound. The people outside were angry about that. They didn’t want to pay the pound.

“They were shoving against the door, glass was broken. Frazier’s car was

damaged. We (the Gardaí) managed to get Joe Frazier and his entourage into the hall. Then we had to try to keep the crowd out”.

Once inside, a somewhat shaken Frazier and his band began to perform.

With tensions outside still very high, Joe Frazier and The Knockouts were on stage until about 2.30 am.

Now the challenge was to get Frazier safely out.

John Cawley: “Frazier’s car was still at the front, and the crowd outside expected him to come out that way. There was one man on duty in the Garda Station. We told him to close the station and come down. I reversed the squad car up to the side entrance...we got Frazier out the side door, and he got into the squad car with us.

I drove him to the Garda Station”.

In the station, the World Heavyweight Champion had to sit on a very odd seat – “It was the back seat of a car which we used as a couch” John said this week, laughing.

Frazier was friendly, and grateful for being ‘rescued’. Meanwhile, his entourage eventually made it as far as the station in the hired vehicle. Shortly afterwards, Frazier and the visiting party departed from Castlerea. Court proceedings followed, but there were no convictions.

It all unfolded 50 years ago, on June 11th 1971.

Just three months before his frightening experience in Castlerea, ‘Smokin’ Joe’ had defeated Muhammad Ali in the ‘Fight of the Century’. In all, they fought three times. Frazier remained world champion up to 1973.

“I remember it well. There was a crowd there maybe an hour and a half before Frazier arrived. There was great excitement.

“The big issue was the price...it was definitely an increase on the normal price. It was very high. I knew (or thought) I wouldn’t be going in!

“Joe Frazier arrived in a black, swanky car. It stopped just before the entrance to ‘The Casino’ but was surrounded by ‘the multitudes’ straight away. Me included. All of a sudden, the car was shaking. There was probably a bit of a mob mentality. The crowd were chanting ‘We want Ali! We want Ali!’ “I didn’t get that close, but I could see the chaos. The car was damaged at one stage. I was there with a few friends...and the local Gardaí actually pushed us in one of the doors! But as we were being pushed in, the

bouncers were trying to push us out!

I managed to elude the bouncers and got in.

“Inside, Frazier was popular, and all went well. I remember him singing Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’, but he had changed the words...he was singing about how he beat Ali his way!

“It was some experience to see the World Heavyweight Champion in Castlerea. I think the trouble can be put down to the price increase, but also to the fact that Frazier had beaten Ali a few months earlier. Ali was everybody’s hero”.

Ballagh Kilroosky native puts biodiversity top of the agenda for Irish Water To celebrate World Environment Day on Saturday last, Irish Water launched its Biodiversity Action Plan, an ambitious strategy to protect biodiversity in the company’s vast network of sites nationwide.

Roscommon native, David Fallon, now works as a Biodiversity Officer with Irish Water.

His role involves working with site managers and treatment plant operators to help them carry out biodiversity enhancement measures on their sites.

Speaking about the plan, David said: “Irish Water recognises the need to urgently increase and accelerate efforts to halt the decline of biodiversity. We are committed to ensuring that we build and manage our infrastructure responsibly so that our

ecosystems are protected, and where possible enhanced.

“We have developed a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) to help us to conserve, enhance and work with the natural environment. This plan clearly

“All of our sites, projects and activities interact with the ecosystems in which they are located, and it is our responsibility to protect these healthy ecosystems that benefit us all. A thriving natural environment helps provide us with food, quality drinking water and clean air.

“Growing up on a small farm in the west of Ireland I always had a strong interest in nature.

As I grew older I observed the decline in natural habitats and bird species around me as agriculture intensified and this led me to seek ways to address these challenges”.

David went on to study Forestry in the Galway Mayo Institute

of Technology, Environmental Science in University of Ulster before going on to complete a research Masters in Institute of Technology Sligo on Peatland Rehabilitation.

Irish Water has already begun its transition towards biodiversity protection and improvement across many of its sites in the northwest of the country with grassland management and nest boxes already in place at Lecarrow Wastewater Treatment Plant in Roscommon and at Swinford Wastewater Treatment Plant in Mayo.

David says that everyone can play their part to protect and enhance biodiversity.

The request for tender is open to applications for the rollout of a new model of contracted public employment service in four areas.

Deputy Kerrane said: “Having been kept in the dark about the changes to Local Employment Services for so long, we are finally seeing a Request For Tender, which encourages a ruthless shift to ‘services’ that focuses on profit over people.

very successful and are well-regarded. The reality is much, much worse and is a serious cause for concern. The ‘payment by results’ model put forward in the tender tells us that the government are looking to implement employment services that focus on quantity over quality.

“This is not the personcentred approach so successfully fostered by the Local Employment Services, and will only result in a focus on profit-driven results, which leaves those who need these services behind. What we are seeing proposed is ‘JobPath 2.0’,” she said.

Transport infrastructure vital to quality of life in the west – Ibec Ibec, the group that represents Irish business, has said that as the economy gradually reopens and restrictions ease, the delivery of world-class transport infrastructure is vital to the quality of life in the west of Ireland.

The group is calling on the Government to ensure that the National Investment Framework for Transport in Ireland (NIFTI) supports the delivery of an enhanced National Development Plan (NDP), underpinned by an ambitious programme of world-class public services and infrastructure development.

Ibec Senior Regional Policy Executive Helen Leahy said: “Investment is needed to make the region more resilient and globally

competitive due to Covid, Brexit and other global threats, with sectors such as tourism, leisure, and hospitality particularly exposed.

“Targeted and ambitious capital investment in transport, broadband, housing, education including a new Technological University, revitalisation of Galway metropolitan area and towns across the region, will be key to supporting the region’s economy to rebuild and ensuring it is better connected, more sustainable, and ultimately more competitive in the wake of the pandemic.

“In rural areas across the west, tourism is a key economic driver. Tourism should be placed at the centre of the infrastructure investment ambitions as it has huge potential

to contribute to the national policy of balanced regional development.

“Also, the delivery of key regional investment projects that will drive regional employment growth will be crucial post-pandemic. The Atlantic Corridor is key to balancing future development on the island. Strong transport links within the region and between regions are vital, and key projects need to be progressed with urgency and delivered.

“Covid has shown the urgent need for investment in digital connectivity, and the National Broadband Plan delivery must be accelerated to allow the region to embrace the economic opportunities remote working may offer”.

Minister actively working against farmers on CAP - Kerrane Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has accused the Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue of “actively working against the majority of Farmers on CAP”.

Speaking on the issue of CAP negotiations remaining unresolved, Deputy Kerrane said: “Currently, farmers are paid Direct Payments under CAP based on production levels from two decades ago.

“Most EU countries have already moved to a flat rate payment per hectare, a process that would benefit the majority of farmers here. A total of 60% of farms here would get more. Yet, the Minister is not seeking this, nor is he seeking frontloaded payments to benefit smaller

farmers, or a cap on the upper limits of CAP. In fact, he is actively working against any such fairness for farmers here when it comes to CAP distribution.

“The Minister is playing a very different tune to when he was in opposition. CAP is a critical income support for farmers, however, the current distribution of CAP does not benefit the small-to-medium farmer. In fact, last year €3.6 million in Direct payments went to just twenty farm enterprises. Some individuals are receiving payments of over €400,000, while many farmers in Galway are receiving less than €10,000 and much less in many instances”.

The Sinn Féin TD said that her party wants CAP payments to be redistributed.

“We believe that there should be a maximum upper limit payment of €60,000 and we believe that payments should be front-loaded to protect small and medium sized farms,” she said.

“Charlie McConalogue has joined a long line of Irish Agriculture Ministers who have been opposed to the redistribution of CAP funds that would benefit small-to-medium farmers. The Minister should stop hiding and come into the Dáil to explain exactly what he is looking for Irish Farmers in Europe,” Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane she concluded.

Farmers expect proper feed labelling – IFA IFA Grain Chairman Mark Browne has called on feed compounders to label feed with the exact percentage of ingredients, and whether it’s Irish or imported.

“We have seen compounders switch back to using high-quality Irish grain this year, which is welcome as the price of imported GM maize increased. This is good for the tillage sector as grain stores have emptied for the 2021 harvest,” he said.

Under statutory rules, all compound feed

should include a list of all the main constituents. The name of each feed material should also be displayed in descending order by weight.

These labelling requirements are also an integral condition of the Bord Bia livestock and feed assurance schemes.

“There’s an emphasis at Government level on increasing the tillage area in this country, and promoting the use of native grain and protein crops in livestock rations,” Mr. Browne said.

Irish grain carries a lower carbon footprint than third country imports, therefore proper labelling allows farmers to make informed decisions around sustainability criteria and supporting native grain production.

Mark Browne encouraged feed suppliers to go beyond the legal requirements by displaying the country of origin of the main feed constituents and called on farmers to support those suppliers who prioritised Irish grain and protein crops.

Cullinan: Minister must keep viability of farms at centre of CAP talks IFA President Tim Cullinan has said the Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue has to keep the viability of farms at the centre of CAP talks.

“The Minister has correctly identified the danger of making more farmers unviable. The focus between now and the resumption of the talks next month should be on securing the maximum flexibility that will deliver the best

deal for Irish farmers,” he said.

The negotiations in Brussels adjourned without a deal, which was the best outcome for now.

“The Minister for Agriculture was right to hold the line. The real problem here is that the EU is trying to achieve increased environmental ambition, but without increased funding,” Mr. Cullinan said.

“Under the current pro-

posals, a cohort of family farms in Ireland will suffer a triple whammy due to so-called Eco schemes, convergence and mandatory redistribution proposals.

“Many of these are our most productive farmers.

Our grass-based system is the most carbon efficient in the world, yet the Commission and the Parliament are going to destroy them,” he concluded.

Stock numbers were maintained at this week’s sale on June 3rd, with increased farmer activity and top quality lots topping out at €2.59 a kilo.

In the heifer ring, prices peaked at €3.10 a kilo – an excellent trade, helped by the better quality stock on offer and increased farmer activity. The weanling rings reported a good clearance, with a variance in price depending on quality. A Charolais bull 340kgs fetched €1,380 or €4.05 a kilo, while the heifer weanlings reported a good clearance with prices peaking at 2.90 a kilo.

The demand for cows with calves at foot remains strong, with €1,980 paid for a nine-year-old Charolais cow and her bull calf at foot. The dry cows were a lively trade this week, with prices peaking at €2.33 a kilo, while the calf trade with good numbers on offer were similar to last week.

Government policies threaten commercial family farming - ICMSA Speaking following a meeting with Taoiseach Micheal Martin, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar and other Government Ministers, the President of the ICMSA Pat McCormack said that is “deeply concerned” with the direction of current Government policy in relation to commercial family farming.

“To be clear, Irish farmers recognise their environmental obligations and we are and will respond as a sector but what we will not accept is the effective shutdown of our sector and politicians telling us to diversify when there are no credible alternatives,” Mr. McCormack said.

“ICMSA is very concerned at this stage from climate change to nitrate regulations to veterinary medicine changes that the current Government appears intent on squeezing commercial family farming out of this country. It appears to have forgotten the crucial role played by agriculture in the economic recovery and also its central role in rural Ireland from a social and economic perspective,” he added.

Mr. McCormack said that despite negative comments from vested interests, Irish agriculture has a proud record of achievement from an economic, environmental, social and rural perspective.

“The Government needs to recognise this, work constructively with the sector and ensure that our sector can grow and develop in a sustainable way.

“Farmers understand the climate challenge but the unique position of agriculture and food production needs to be recognised as acknowledged in the Paris Accord, sustainable agriculture needs to be supported with the maximum level of co-funding under CAP Post 2020 and Irish farmers will not accept the Government unfairly undermining our very future based on flawed policies,” concluded Mr. McCormack.

Government rejects Climate Council on farm methane – Naughten

Independent TD Denis Naughten.

Independent TD Denis Naughten has expressed disappointment that Environment Minister Eamon Ryan has rejected an amendment based on the Climate Change Advisory Council recommendation for a separate climate target for farm generated (biogenic) methane.

This, he claims, would ensure that the agricultural sector does not face a disproportionate share of the climate reduction targets over the coming years.

Similar approaches have been taken by the EU, the UK and New Zealand, a country with a similar climate challenges to that faced by Ireland.

“While Minister Ryan and his predecessor Richard Bruton both acknowledged there is a need to take a different approach to methane coming from agriculture and that coming from fossil fuels, the Climate Bill will not reflect this in law as a result of today’s debate, which I believe will place an unacceptable burden on family farms and on those managing marginal farmland,” said Denis Naughten.

“I expressed a real concern that, as currently drafted, the Climate Bill incen-

tivises other Government Departments to use agriculture as a scapegoat for the failure to meet their individual climate targets.

“Real climate action must be about encouraging people along the climate journey in a constructive and positive way with the aim of achieving the goal we all want: a long-term sustainable planet for our children and their children.

“I believe the failure to clearly reflect this recommendation of the Climate Change Advisory Council recommendation in the legislation will undermine the overall objective behind the Climate Bill, and lead to an unnecessary backlash from the farming community.

“Despite scaremongering by some socalled environmentalists this amendment does not mean that agriculture and farming should have a free pass. As I outlined at the committee, managing our land use better can take even more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, reducing its harmful effects on the climate and the oceans far quicker than shutting down farming,” Deputy Naughten concluded.

A good number of customers are continuing to bid online in addition to the limited numbers al-

There was a smaller entry of sheep on offer at our sale on Wednesday (9th) with an improvement in trade for spring lambs and cast ewes. Spring lambs made up to €159 for 44.6kgs, and stag ewes made up to €170.

Cast ewes made from €56 to €170 per lot, ewes with two lambs at foot made up to €340, and

ewes with one lamb at foot made up to €235.

McGahern Museum gets Minister’s seal of approval < DAN DOONER

The new John McGahern Museum, which was formerly Cootehall Garda Barracks and home to the writer during his childhood, received Minister of State Patrick O’Donovan’s stamp of approval when he visited the site last week.

The local community took on the project of renovating the building when the Garda station closed in 2012 and to that end, over €212,000 was spent on transforming the former barracks while a further €25,000 was spent on the exhibition itself with the Cootehall Community Development Committee contributing €52,000.

Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works Patrick O’Donovan told the Roscommon People that the newly opened museum at Cootehall is a real credit to the local committee.

“The John McGahern Museum at the former Garda Barracks in Cootehall is a real example of what we want to achieve when it comes to disused OPW buildings.

“The project is a great credit to the local committee and OPW

staff. The people of Cootehall are fortunate to have such a good local committee who put their shoulders to the wheel in conjunction with Roscommon County Council, LEADER and the Office of Public Works.

“The community is also fortunate to have had in their parish someone like John McGahern to celebrate. Not every community with a building like this to be disposed of has a writer of such national and international renown,” he said.

While Minister O’Donovan had high praise for the Cootehall committee led by Chairman Maurice Gannon, he was critical of other communities who he said failed to show similar initiative when it came to taking over former Garda barracks.

The Minister of State said the OPW would help to promote the new museum and said he would work with the local committee to that end.

“We are extremely grateful to the Office of Public Works for their support throughout this.

As of now, the Barracks is on a 5-year renewable lease from the OPW. We are hoping in time that it could come under the owner-

ship of the local authority and that would relieve some of the restrictions currently in place,” he said.

“The committee has a business plan for the Barracks including facilities such as a restaurant and tea rooms which would be a huge help in attracting tourists to the area”.

Mr. Bambrick said the John McGahern Museum, which features exhibits from the renowned writer’s time growing up at the Garda Barracks is a welcome addition to North Roscommon tourism.

“We have Lough Key Forest Park not too far away and we are right on the water here in Coot-

ehall which would allow tourists to avail of water-based sports,” he said.

Mr. Bambrick expressed the committee’s thanks to local Minister of State Frank Feighan for facilitating Minister of State Patrick O’Donovan’s visit to the area last week and for his support throughout the project.

Roscommon man to serve on prestigious Irish American Committee

Hilary Beirne, native of Boyle, Co. Roscommon, recently became the newest member of the Irish Ad Hoc Committee to Protect the Good Friday Agreement (GFA), in Washington D.C. He was selected to join the bipartisan committee, which is dedicated to protecting the Good Friday Agreement and maintain an open border on the island of Ireland, based on his recognized leadership among the Irish diaspora in the United States.

Mr. Beirne is one of only two Irish-born US citizens to join the distinguished group, which includes former members of the Clinton administration, two former US Congressmen, five former US Ambassadors, several prominent academics, and leaders of influential Irish-American

organizations.

“I remember hearing of the Irish Ad Hoc committee as a child in Ireland; they were then and are now, well-respected in both American and Irish political circles. So when I was invited to join, I accepted without hesitation,” said Beirne.

“I remember watching RTÉ news in the 1970s, when Tip O’Neill – then Speaker of the House and Chairman of the Committee – spoke of the “troubles” in Northern Ireland, and the US support for Ireland.

“I look forward to serving, in some small way, Ireland – the land of my birth – and the United States”.

The Ad Hoc Committee was formed by leading Irish-American political leaders and diplomats that

have a long-established history of supporting the peace process in Northern Ireland.

The committee’s brief deals with US–European policy, particularly concerning Britain, Ireland, and Northern Ireland. The committee’s current focus is protecting the gains of the Good Friday Agreement, post-Brexit. The group hosts weekly meetings with political leaders from Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States to discuss issues concerning economic and political stability in Ireland and Europe.

Hilary T. Beirne was educated in St. Mary’s College, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from University College Dublin and Galway, and has a Master’s degree in

Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences from City University of New York, Hunter College. He is the founding Chairman of the New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Foundation, Chief Administrative Officer of the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and an Honorary Member of the famed ‘Fighting 69th’ Regiment.

He has received multiple awards and honours for his involvement with the Irish community in the United States.

In March 2021, he was honoured by the Board of Legislators of Westchester County, New York, at their Irish History and Heritage Celebration. In April 2021, he was honoured by the Irish Echo Newspaper (America’s oldest Irish newspaper) with a 2021 Arts and Culture Award.

Anniversary Mass in Clooneycolgan Church on Sunday, 13th June at 9.30am.

On the occasion of her First Anniversary, the family of Mona Walsh, wish to acknowledge the care and kindness shown to her over the course of her short illness and the outpouring of support we received following her death.

We greatly appreciate the professionalism of Mona’s G.P., Dr. Valerie Morris, the care team at Roscommon University Hospital and the staff of the Oncology Unit at Galway University Hospital. In particular, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Palliative Care nurses from the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice. Words cannot do justice to the comfort received by Mona in her own home and the peace of mind that we felt as a result.

The late Rev. Fr. Raymond Browne, whom we remember fondly, was a frequent caller to Mona, prayed with her daily and administered the sacraments to her in her final hours. Mona’s Funeral Mass, at which Fr. Browne was ably assisted by Deacon Seamus Talbot, was a moving and spiritual celebration of her life, as reflected in the various contributions to the liturgy, with a special mention for the choir.

Smyth’s Funeral Directors handled Mona’s removal and burial with their customary unobtrusive efficiency. We extend our thanks also to members of the local community who prepared Mona’s grave.

Notwithstanding the COVID restrictions, we are eternally grateful to the many neighbours and friends who paid their respects to Mona and whose countless gestures of support and solidarity we will never forget.

At Mona’s First Anniversary Mass, we will remember you all in our prayers.

R.I.P. I, Mae Brennan, wish to thank everybody for the kindness and support shown to me on the death of my dear brother John Joe, who died on the 23rd of January 2021. He was formerly of Fairfield, Creggs and died in Croydon Hospital Surrey. I thank the nurses and doctors who cared for him in his final days, especially his neighbour Sharon.

I am very grateful to his friends and neighbours who attended his Funeral Mass in Croydon. May God bless the Priests of his parish who visited him, gave him the Last Rites and celebrated his Funeral Mass in Croydon. I thank the people including Garda Neilan who attended his Funeral Mass in Kilbegnet Church.

A special thanks to Fr. Morris for celebrating the Holy Mass and to Fr. Lohan for prayers and blessings in the graveyard.

I was really consoled by the respect and sympathy shown by so many faithful friends who stood prayerfully along the route of his final journey, first to Kilbegnet Church, and finally to Killyan Cemetery.

I thank Pat Smyth and Rowland Brothers Undertakers U.K. for organising his funeral so professionally. They made it possible for him to be buried in Killyan with his ancestors as he had wished. I thank the gravediggers who prepared his final resting place.

Sincere thanks to you who had the Holy Masses offered, sent sympathy cards, letters, phonecalls, messages of condolences and for all your prayers. I extend my thanks to the many Priests who contacted me and had Holy Masses offered for John Joe. ‘SHESchool’ course encourages women to get involved in politics If you have ever considered running for local election in Counties Roscommon or Westmeath of simply want to find out how your local county council works, then the ‘Introduction to Politics’ course from SHESchool could be for you!

This short course is free and runs on Zoom over two consecutive weeks on Wednesday, June 16th and 23rd. The course, delivered by the See Her Elected project, aims to empower women in Westmeath and Roscommon to engage in electoral politics.

Classes will run twice on each date with a morning option from 10 am to 11.30 am and an evening option from 7.30 pm to 9 pm.

Dr. Michelle Maher, Regional Development Officer with the SHE Project, explained: “We

want to see more women being elected to councils and to the Dáil. Our free online #SHESchool which is all about explaining local politics, where you fit in, and what you can do to have a say in what goes on.

“Only 24% of county councillors throughout Ireland are female and we have a much lower percentage of female councillors in rural counties compared to more urban centres such as Dublin. It is important to have a female perspective at decision making level as this will ensure more balanced decisions are made on a range of issues which matter to us as women whether that’s climate change, employment, parenting, care or violence against women for example,” she said.

The terms ‘flip-flop’ and ‘yo-yo’ are not often used in terms of Gaelic football but I have heard them many times in the past couple of weeks in the national media as the pundits discuss the merits of this Roscommon team.

The narrative is that the Rossies are too good for Division Two and not good enough for Division One. I suppose the evidence is there

with a number of promotions being followed by relegation the following season. The Roscommon players can put a stop to that by going to Armagh and winning this play-off on Sunday.

It will not be an easy task by any means but it is definitely within the capabilities of Anthony Cunningham’s side.

The league campaign so far has been a mixed bag. Roscommon did well at times against Dublin but were not helped by some very questionable refereeing decisions. Against Galway the team just didn’t turn up and alarm bells started to ring after that display.

There was far more intensity and purpose against Kerry ahead of the two most important games of the year. Armagh on Sunday and the

Connacht semi-final against Galway will define Roscommon’s season.

Travelling to Armagh will not be easy for Cunningham’s side but if Roscommon aspire to sit at the top table of Gaelic football then these are the challenges they must relish.

Armagh have been hit by a number of injuries in recent weeks, particularly in defence, however Kieran McGeeney’s side look a potent outfit from midfield onwards.

Roscommon have been hit and miss in the midfield sector again this year and they will need to be competitive against Niall Grimley and Jarlath Óg Burns. But it is up front that Armagh are most dangerous: their full-forward line of Rory Grugan, Oisin O’Neill and Stefan Campbell is as good as any in the game at the top

level. Roscommon will need to show the same intensity and aggression in the tackle as we saw against Kerry.

Niall Daly and Seán Mullooly will presumably lead the defence with the Daly brothers, Brian Stack, Davy Murray and the impressive Richard Hughes all in line to see action.

Shane Killoran played well against Kerry and he and Enda Smith could be deployed in the engine room at midfield. Up front, they need to hit the ground running on Sunday. Ciaráin Murtagh has been Roscommon’s best player so far but he needs more help in attack.

Time and again over the past five or six years, successive managers, pundits, and observers have stressed the need for Roscommon to be playing in Division One. A win this

After two good league wins, Roscommon were brought back down to earth with a thud in the sunshine at Markievicz Park last Sunday when they were deservedly beaten

by the home side in what was an ultra-competitive encounter.

While this was a disappointing display, it’s not the end of world for Diane O’Hora’s team as they had already qualified for the league semi-finals, but there were enough shortcomings evident in this performance to cause for concern.

Played in perfect conditions, Roscommon were always in the game but they never looked like winning it, and the ball was given away cheaply on numerous occasions by the visitors.

Roscommon did well in defence where Helena Cummins, Róisín Wynne, Saoirse Wynne, and Sarah McVeigh were prominent. But they were second best in midfield where Sligo’s Sarah Reynolds dominated.

However, it was in attack where Roscommon struggled most with the notable exception of Aisling Hanly who was far and away Roscommon’s best performer on the day. But too often she was left to plough a lone furrow as some of her more experienced colleagues never got into the game.

Hanly was a constant danger for Roscommon but at the other end of the field Kate Walsh, Denise McGrath and Emma Keaveney were causing lots of problems for the Roscommon defence. Sligo led by 0-8 to 0-6 at half-time which was not a bad position for Roscommon given the balance of play.

Roscommon’s best spell came in the third quarter after the management made a number of changes in an effort to ignite a response.

Four great points without reply from Hanly (2) and Rebecca Finan (2) saw Roscommon lead (0-11 to 0-10) by the 47th minute and the momentum seemed to be with the visitors.

But it was the home side who took the initiative in the closing stages, and Kate Walsh kicked three points (2 frees) in the final ten minutes to give her side a morale-boosting win.

Roscommon manager Diana O’Hora pulled no punches in her interview after the game with her assessment of the performance.

“We gave the ball away a lot and we have problems with our decision making. Sligo were on top of their game, they never gave us room to shoot and they got in some great blocks, especially in the first half when our forwards were trying to shoot from a standing position.

On top of that their half-back line attacked us all game. Sligo were by far the better team today,” she said.

The Mayo woman was disappointed with the lack of leadership shown by the team when the game was in the melting pot.

really stood up there today for us.

My heart went out to Aisling Hanly because the weight was all on her shoulders. It was tough for her when others on the team were not doing their stuff.

“We are very lucky to have come in here with the two wins because this performance today has really shown just how far behind (we are to) where we need to be and how much work we have to do. The girls will have to learn in a short space of time. We are blessed to have that game against Laois next week but looking at today’s performance I wouldn’t be too confident”.

Finally, Diane had huge praise for panel member Aoife O’Rourke who is the talk of the county since her qualification for the Olympic Games last weekend.

“The girls were all talking about Aoife today and Lisa (Aoife’s sister) was also on the panel and she is away boxing too. It’s great that they are having such success and everyone is so proud of their achievements but from my point of view, I have lost two players. We all wish Aoife the very best in the Olympics,” she concluded.

Roscommon now face Laois in a league semi-final this weekend in what will be another welcome challenge for the team ahead of the championship.

The best thing about a poor performance in team sport is that there is always a chance to put things right and that is certainly the case with Roscommon Ladies footballers who take the field against Laois

this Sunday with plenty to prove after last weekend’s defeat to Sligo.

Roscommon manager, Diane O’Hora, told People Sport that her players will be anxious to set the record straight after that two-point defeat to Sligo on Sunday last.

“It’s hard to put the finger on where it went wrong against Sligo. Maybe it was that the girls were too wound up about winning three games on the trot and were too nervous but we certainly did not play the way we are capable of. I’m delighted to get the chance to play again this week-

end and we will be looking for a much better display,” she said.

The Roscommon team won’t be picked until closer to the weekend but the management will be looking for the more experienced players on the panel to come to the fore. When experience and guile was needed last Sunday in Sligo only Aisling Hanly stood up to be counted.

Diane O’Hora will be demanding a return to the type of free-flowing football that was evident at times in the win against Down. Despite Roscommon’s poor display against Sligo there was only two

points in the game at the final whistle so it’s by no means a crisis.

Laois are a good side but went down by a point to Wicklow (2-9 to 1-11) last weekend. They are managed by former senior footballer, Donie Brennan, and are strong in the full-forward line where Mo Nerney, Sarah Anne Fitzgerald and Aoife Kerrane are all excellent.

Laois might start the match as favourites but Roscommon can bounce back from their disappointment last Sunday to reach the league final.

Boyle There are two cups up for grabs for the men in the next two weeks: The King Cup 18-hole Stableford takes place on Sunday (13th) while the Drumderrig Cup stroke competition takes place on Sunday, June 20th.

The ladies, meanwhile, will compete for the Jumble Cup this coming week and the Drumderrig Cup the following weekend.

Lorcan Egan and Mark Feehan won the Boyle round of the Holmpatrick Cup and will now represent the club in the area final. Tish Perry won the PGA Tankard competition and Seamus Gallagher won the men’s Thursday competition.

The men will compete in three interclub matches in the last week of June: Liam Whyte’s Pierce Purcell team are out on June 22nd; Paddy McLoughlin’s seniors play Rosses Point on Thursday 24th; John McGuinn’s All-Ireland Fourball team also take on Rosses Point.

This weekend’s action Racing this weekend starts this evening on the flat at Leopardstown, off at 4.15 pm. The flat meeting tomorrow is at Fairyhouse in the evening at 4.25 pm with a national hunt card on at Clonmel at 1.50 pm.

Saturday is day one of a two-day meet at Downpatrick with a flat card in the afternoon at 1.30 pm and national hunt racing in Limerick first race 1.50 pm. Racing on Sunday sees day two of the Downpatrick meet with national hunt racing off at 1.50 pm and the flat fare in on at Gowran Park starting at 2 pm. There is a national hunt meeting at Kilbeggan on Monday at 4.40 pm and flat at Gowran Park at 1.45 pm. There is racing at Sligo on Tuesday evening.

ITV4’s coverage on Saturday features four races from York, supplemented with two races from Sandown and two from Chester. Racing is also carried on UTV. There was top-class flat racing last weekend starting with the Oaks and Derby in Epsom on Friday and Saturday and finishing in Chantilly in France on Sunday with the French Derby.

Castlerea Golf Club extends deepest sympathy to the family of honorary member Deirdre McDermot, who passed away recently. Deirdre was Lady President in Castlerea Golf Club from 1998 to 2002, which must be a record in golf circles, and Lady Captain in 1975, a true testament to the high esteem Deirdre was held in. Deirdre and her late husband Eamon sponsored the McDermot Cup to the Ladies for many years. Hurlers crushed by rampant Lilywhites Allianz National Hurling League Division 2B Kildare 4-15 Roscommon 0-10 Roscommon hurlers’ woes continued at sunny Dr. Hyde Park last Sunday when they were put to the sword by a rampant Kildare team who were dominant in every sector and who had the league points in the bag by half-time.

A third defeat on the trot means that Johnny Keane’s men must now beat Derry next Sunday to avoid relegation.

It was 0-3 each after ten minutes with Roscommon’s points coming from Cathal Dolan (2) and Ben McGahon, but it was a false dawn for the home side as Kildare let loose from that point until the interval. The Lilywhites hit 3-10 without reply before the break.

David Slattery was on target

with two goals and Jack Sheridan grabbed one as the visitors opened up, and at half-time it was 3-15 to 0-4.

With the points already safely secured, Kildare made several changes in the second half as they began to look ahead to their final group game against Mayo.

For Roscommon, it was another painful day in a division where they have been out of their depth thus far.

Roscommon’s Camogie revival continues this weekend when Tyrone are the opposition in the National League Division Four semi-final.

Roscommon have breezed through to the last four with three

impressive wins and the blend of experienced and younger players has been a winning combination for manager Frank Browne and his selectors.

So far, Tyrone have won two of their matches (Antrim and Wicklow) but lost one (Cavan), and while they should be strong

opposition for Roscommon, the expectation will be that a final spot against Cavan or Mayo awaits Browne’s charges.

Indeed, with players like Rachel Dolan, Joanne Beattie, Áine O’Meara, Rachel Fitzmaurice, Niamh Coyle, and Shauna Fallon all in good form, anything other

than a Roscommon win would be a surprise.

Promotion was one of the main aims for Frank Browne and his management team when they took over the job a couple of months ago. They should be one step closer after this semi-final.
