Executor Duties and Responsibilities

My late aunt appointed me as Executor in her will. My brothers and I are the beneficiaries in her estate. I am unsure of what is expected of me. What exactly is an Executor and what do they do?

The Executor of a will is the person named by the maker of a will, Testator (male) or Testatrix (female), to carry out the directions of the will. The Executor is obliged by law to preserve, protect and administer the estate of the deceased person strictly in accordance with the terms of the will.

An Executor’s main duties include the following:

• Ensure that a death certificate is obtained.

• Ascertain the extent of the deceased person’s estate.

• Ensure that all debts owed by the deceased at the time of death are accounted for and paid out of the estate. The executor must also ensure that all funeral expenses are paid.

• Trace all of the beneficiaries outlined in the deceased person’s Will.

• Ensure that the deceased person’s estate is correctly and properly valued for Revenue purposes.

• Protect the assets of the estate until they are distributed e.g. ensure that any house or other such property is adequately insured.

• When the Grant of Probate has issued, the Executor must distribute the assets in accordance with the terms of the Will.

• When the estate is finalised and all bequests have been settled, the Executor must produce a set of Estate Accounts which outlines all money received and paid out.

Generally your Solicitor will assist you each of the above. It is advisable to consult with a Solicitor as soon as possible after the death of the Testatrix to commence the administration process.

I can’t believe it’s August!

It was August last week, when we wrote that week’s column!

Oh, was it? Sure I don’t pass much heed!

(Editor: You and…)

If it’s August, we won’t find it ‘til… DON’T SAY IT!

All I’m saying is it won’t be long ‘til the return of s…

Don’t mention the S-word!

Just saying it’s August, it won’t be long ‘til the return of the s… PLEASE! Don’t mention the return of school! PLEASE!

Oh I’m not talking about the return of school, I’m talking about the return of the soccer season across the pond. Actually, the soccer season HAS returned across the pond, that’s why the Editor was a nervous wreck on Sunday, when Leeds were playing!

Huh! Leeds! Sure they’re in the Championship now. I’m on about the return of the Premier League! Is it back soon?

Yes, this Friday!

(They pause to get their sunglasses out as the weather takes an unexpected turn for the better)

I can’t believe…

It’s August! Just accept it!

No, I can’t believe you’re still talking about running for election! But I’ve been inundated with offers! But have you the right temperament?

If you run for election next year – or the year after – is your focus local or national?

Well, I’m glad you asked me that…but I dunno, not yet!

Mmnn…

Mmnn what?

It’s a rather crowded field…

Huh!

Both locally and nationally. I mean, you might be better off opting for an easier life…

Nah! I’m up for the battle. It’s a dream team! Me as the candidate, you as my Director of Elections.

I think, er, you also need to be aware that there will be formidable opposition out there, you know, on the ballot paper… Nah! I can take them all! I’ll be the People’s Candidate! You and me together, we’ll be unbeatable! Besides, there are no other new candidates emerging.

Well, I’ve heard rumours…

Nah! The field’s open to me! With you as my Director of Elections!

I may have to come back to you on that offer…

Huh?

I’ve actually been approached by a number of people, asking ME to put my name forward! Hello? Hello? DON’T HANG UP! We can talk about this! You could be my PR Consultant! We could even talk to Noel Kelly! HELLO?!

(To be continued)

Headliners face backlash after Ballygar Carnival performance

< DAN DOONER

Irish Eurovision representatives, Wild Youth, have been slammed by angry concertgoers this week following their headline appearance at Ballygar Carnival last Sunday night.

The band – made up of Conor O’Donohue, David Whelan, Ed Porter and Callum McAdam - have also faced a backlash on social media for arriving late to the Ballygar gig and performing for less than an hour.

They had been scheduled to perform from midnight for around 90 minutes at the Mattie McDonagh Centre, but those present at the €20

Andrew will discuss recent archaeology dig and surveying of the local castle and surrounding area. This is a free event in keeping with National Heritage Week.

Heritage talk in Culleen Hall

St John’s Parish Heritage Group will host a talk from 7 pm to 9.30 pm on Friday, August 18th at Culleen Hall Community Centre in Knockcroghery (F42 EN12).

The event will celebrate the stone quarrying heritage during the 1800s and 1900s in Ireland including the unique limestone bedrock still being quarried in Lecarrow.

There will be a demonstration of lime mortar building and pointing of walls from 7 pm, and a talk by Eamon Leonard (MA in local history) at 8 pm.

per head concert claimed they only took to the stage at 1.20 am and had finished their set by 2.10 am.

The Dublin band had been performing at Cork Pride ‘Party at the Port’ earlier in the day, and are believed to have only left at around 9 pm for their Ballygar date.

A number of those in attendance have been in contact with the Roscommon People in recent days to express their dismay with the performance. Each asked to remain anonymous.

One woman, who regularly attends the Ballygar Carnival with her niece who has special needs, said the performance was the worst she had

ever seen.

“The lead singer had his back to the audience for most of the show…and they clearly didn’t care about their audience,” she said.

“My niece comes up every year from Wexford, she loves music, but she was so disappointed last Sunday night and wouldn’t even dance.

“It was like Wild Youth looked down on Ballygar… it was the worst gig I was ever at! They barely played an hour and the crowd were really angry at the end”.

Another attendee said that she and her friends had paid a total of €80 for tickets but were left bitterly disappointed.

“For a band who pride themselves on unity and kindness, their performance was anything but,” she said.

She added that many of those present were left perplexed by the performance of lead singer Conor O’Donohue.

“The backing singers appeared to be doing lead vocals…and the sound quality was so poor. The whole performance was of poor quality and not to a standard which I would expect at a festival”.

After a short set of about nine songs, she said, the band announced they were “wrapping things up”.

“There was booing from

the crowd, understandably. I thought it was a joke at first…” she added.

Another woman said it was her first time home for the carnival in four years and she had been excited to see the band live. She said the performance ruined her night and swore she’d never listen to the band again.

“There are plenty of young, hungry acts that would have jumped at that opportunity…sure this is a festival that

Boyzone played at back in the day,” she said.

This week, popular Facebook page ‘Ballygar Banter’ has been inundated with complaints from those present on Sunday night, with some branding the performance as “a kick in the teeth for the dedicated committee” following what was another hugely successful Ballygar Carnival.

A post by Ballygar Banter read: ‘It’s a real shame to

report that Wild Youth were a total disappointment from the many complaints to Ballygar Banter.

‘It appears they turned up late, were accommodated with everything they wished for but delivered very poorly. Many people were upset and seriously disappointed’.

Roscommon People has contacted Wild Youth’s management team for comment but none was forthcoming at the time of going to press.

Creggs ‘buzzing’ amid Pride of Place preparations

Creggs village is currently a hive of activity preparing for the visit of Pride of Place judges on Wednesday next, August 16th, as the village represents County Galway in the Biodiversity and Climate Action section of the All-Ireland awards.

Creggs was last nominated for the Pride of Place awards in 2019, in the community category on that occasion. This time the focus is on biodiversity and climate action and the community is preparing to showcase the many actions underway in the village in relation to biodiversity and climate action. Meetings have been held every Wednesday night at 9 pm in the Heritage Centre. All households in the parish are asked to get behind the effort and see what part they can play in this year’s efforts. A village clean-up was held on Saturday morning, with young and old represented. Another clean-up is planned from 11 am to 1 pm this Saturday morning. Last Saturday’s event was a great opportunity for people to see the community in action, and there was a great ‘buzz’ around the village – if you will excuse the biodiverse pun!

Creggs is currently working on a Biodiversity Action Plan, following the receipt of funding from the Community Foundation, which allowed Creggs Rural Development to engage the services of ecologist Sheila Murphy. The local development group liaised with village residents and those living further afield and also liaised with the local GAA and rugby clubs before collating the ideas in a plan, which will be published during Heritage Week.

Judges will visit Creggs on Wednesday afternoon, August 16th, having visited a project in Gort in south Galway in the morning. They will be shown a short presentation in the Heritage Centre by members of Creggs Rural Development before getting out and about to see at first-hand the work being done in the village in terms of biodiversity and climate action.

They will then enjoy refreshments in the school hall before leaving the village at approximately 5 pm. Locals are asked to gather in the school hall at 4 pm on Wednesday (16th) to meet the judges. All are welcome to attend.

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK

FRIDAY-SUNDAY Six-goal Gaels

The Roscommon club championships got off to a lively start over the weekend, supporters no doubt delighted that the action is underway. There’s nothing quite like the pride in one’s own parish/area which the GAA instills!

Performance of the weekend had to be Roscommon Gaels’ remarkable win away to Boyle in the SFC. Supporters of both clubs were scratching their heads in Abbey Park as the Gaels scored an astonishing six first-half goals.

Boyle, who steadied the leaking ship in the second half, will aim to bounce back from this shock. As for Roscommon Gaels, it’s a signal of serious intent from manager Frankie Dolan & Co.

SATURDAY Some mothers…

30 years or so ago, on an otherwise quiet day in the Roscommon Champion office, we received word that the great star of stage and screen, Michael Crawford, was ‘on vacation’ in the Tarmonbarry area.

It was a ‘wow’ moment – but not necessarily that far-fetched. After all, to this day some celebrities have holiday homes in the region, and/or have enjoyed a cruise on the River Shannon. Bono’s been known to drop in to Tarmonbarry for a bite to eat. Perhaps the ‘Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em’/ Phantom of the Opera star (who has Irish ancestry) had relations in Roscommon/Longford?

I thought of that rumour/report from long ago this very evening, while watching a delightful programme on BBC Four. Recently in this column I mentioned how there are gems to be found on some of the lesser known TV channels, treasures that ought not be overlooked in this streaming age. A number of years ago (after his longrunning show had ended) the great talk show host Michael Parkinson did a series in which he reflected on some of his more memorable interviews

with selected stars. I’ve seen a few of them (Peter Cook, Tommy Cooper, Barry Humphries/Dame Edna, etc).

This evening’s flashback programme featured a repeat of an hour-long interview with Crawford.

Those of us of the proverbial ‘certain age’ remember Crawford as a comedy sensation in the 1970s, when he starred as the accident-prone and generally idiotic (but endearing) Frank Spencer in ‘Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em’. It was a classic sitcom, Crawford creating one of Britain’s most-loved comedy characters. The series was notable for its brilliant comedy/action sequences, Crawford famously doing all his own stunts. Later, the wider public was surprised to see the actor cast by Andrew Lloyd Webber for the lead part in The Phantom of the Opera. Crawford went on to become a worldwide star in that

role. Now aged 81, he has had a glittering career.

In the Parkinson interview – recorded (I think) around 1999 –Crawford was a wonderful guest. The actor-singer came across as a charismatic and very likeable man. Modest about his great success, Crawford reflected on his career to that point with some brilliant anecdotes, while also treating Parkinson show viewers to some of the songs he was most associated with.

When the legendary Gene Kelly (‘Singing’ in the Rain’) met Crawford in a hotel room in America, he asked the rising star if he could dance. “No” came the reply. As the ‘audition’ continued, they ended up tap dancing together on a small coffee table, Crawford partly nervous, partly star-struck. Kelly offered him a role. “I’m look-

ing for an attractive idiot (for the part). My wife says you’re attractive… and I think you’re an idiot”.

Back in the Roscommon Champion all those years ago, photographer Gerard O’Loughlin and I set off on a mission: to find Michael Crawford. What an interview this would be! Now we weren’t fully convinced that the star was in Tarmonbarry, we had just heard a rumour. In those days, we didn’t need much prompting to ‘hit the road’.

Off we went, knocking on doors, asking locals for any lead they might have to help with our quest for an exclusive. But there would be no sighting of Michael Crawford. Not a single ‘Ooh Betty’ (Frank Spencer’s catchphrase) was heard. He wasn’t there.

To the best of my knowledge, it was a playful rumour, maybe even a prank

inspired by a Michael Crawford lookalike passing through the village! We didn’t mind. Our egos could take it. As I recall, Gerard and I made an afternoon of it, enjoying one or two liquid scoops to make up for the journalistic scoop that never was. It wasn’t quite our finest hour. I guess some mothers do ‘ave ‘em …!

MONDAY

Women’s World Cup

The Women’s World Cup has been entertaining. The other day, England looked potential tournament winners as they hit China for six (6-1). Today, it was a different story. Nigeria, against whom the Republic of Ireland earned a deserved draw, dominated the English in an absorbing 0-0 draw.

The twists and turns included a red card for England’s Lauren James (for a stamping offence), a penalty award for England being overturned by VAR, and Nigeria missing a host of chances (including hitting the bar twice). When it went to a penalty shootout, as often happens it was the better team on the day that lost out. A greatly relieved England were fortunate to advance to the quarter-finals (though their character was never in doubt, and they have more quality than was shown on this occasion).

An aside: By now, we are well used to the sight of some self-assured footballers wearing bright-coloured boots to stand out from colleagues; today’s game was a first sighting for me of Michelle Alozie’s even more fabulous footwear, the Nigerian player wearing two different coloured boots (apparently this is the norm for her).

Just a thought…

FRANK BRANDON

FRANK BRANDON’S unique take on life ...

Thriving carnival and festival season locally a far cry from our modest experiences long ago!

Our man Frank recalls the night a local festival committee took in just 36 pounds at the door; He muses on Pope Francis’ role as leader of the Catholic Church; And he highlights some local events….

For as long as I remember, the month of August was the time for carnivals and festivals in this part of the world. Out here in Creggs, as soon as Ballygar was over, our carnival would start off every year on the 15th of August. As with lots of local carnivals, Creggs has sadly fallen by the wayside. Meanwhile – remarkably – up the

road in Ballygar their annual one is going from strength to strength.

I’m told that on Thursday night last the crowds had to be seen to be believed. I don’t know whether it’s by accident or design, but the fact that Thursday was Ladies Day at the Galway Races was a huge help. Apparently there were several busloads of young ladies, all dressed to the nines, arriving into Ballygar on their way back from the races, and it all contributed to an amazing atmosphere. Not to be outdone, down the road in Castlerea the same story unfolded, with huge crowds flocking there to enjoy The Tumbling Paddies, who provided great entertainment.

Along with the longer established artists like Nathan Carter and Mike Denver, The Tumbling Paddies and Cliona Hagan seem to be the most popular acts out there this year. They are appearing at practically every festival that I see advertised locally!

Over the weekend Mike Denver packed them

in in Ballygar, while this Friday night Cliona is opening the festival in Screene’s of Guilka where she will be followed by Patrick Feeney on Saturday (12th). The following weekend, Denver, The Tumbling Paddies and George Murphy and the Rising Sons are all scheduled to appear.

Listening to the radio this morning, there was an advertisement for Bonniconlon Agricultural Show, which is one of the biggest in the west, and lo and behold who are on stage during the day only Mike and Cliona! They lost out a lot during Covid, but it does look as if our top artists are doing well this summer, and it’s great to see it.

Talking of Creggs Carnival, at one stage during the 1980s we in the rugby club decided to revive it for one year, but for some reason it just never took off. We had Geraldine Brannigan and her band the week after she represented Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest. As the dance took place on the same night as the Connacht Cham-

‘Heart’ of the community: Athleague/Tremane defibrillator group fundraisers

On the medical front, one of the big and very welcome developments in rural Ireland has been the deployment of defibrillators at strategic places in so many of our communities. Numerous lives have already been saved by these devices and hopefully that will continue to be the case into the future.

All over the country defibrillator groups have sprung up, all with the intention of providing their own immediate areas with this vital equipment, and fundraising initiatives play an essential part in buying and maintaining the actual defibrillators themselves.

Over the road, the Athleague/Tremane defibrillator group maintain six community devices which can

be used in an emergency – such as a cardiac arrest – and they also provide free CPR training in the community.

They are having a big fundraiser on Sunday, 20th of August. There will be a 5km walk at 12 noon from Athleague Community Centre, a 7.5km swim from Castlecoote to Athleague at 3 pm, and a Walk from Castlecoote to Athleague along the Suck Valley Way (from 3 pm) to accompany the swimmers.

Registration for the 5km walk takes place in Athleague Community Centre from 11 am. Entry is €10 per person, €15 for a couple and €20 for a family of 3+.

If you want to swim you have three different options and you need

to contact Adrian at 087 9460908 to confirm your attendance and find out the option that suits you best before Thursday (17th) at 6 pm. If you want to do the Suck Valley walk contact Paula at 086 1016794 to confirm attendance and get details of registration and fees, etc. There will be refreshments served afterwards and from 7 pm music will take place in the Bridge House with the very talented Kenneth McCormack providing the entertainment. The whole event is to raise funds for the Athleague/Tremane Defibrillator group so do your best to take part on the day or if you can’t make it you can contribute at idonate: Athleague/Tremane Defibrillator Group.

pionship game between Galway and Roscommon in Tuam, we were confidently expecting a bonanza.

As it happened, we took in a total of 36 pounds and it took a fair bit of not so friendly persuasion by my brother, the Rasher, to get the band manager to accept a 50-50 split. Despite being on a guarantee of some hundreds of pounds, the Eurovision singer and her band were lucky to get £18 for their trouble, while we got the other half of the takings. On another night, the late Brian Harkin and the Plainsmen were the band on stage and only eleven paying customers turned up. Brian did the decent thing and told the band to carry on while he joined some of us for a few pints, after which he royally entertained the eleven dancers.

As for the festivals just ending/winding up locally – and those still to come – I am sure none of them will have the type of experiences we had all those years ago. I hope they have all been viable successes for all involved.

Pope Francis proves to be a crowd-puller!

In the build-up to the Galway Races last week, one of the programmes from the archives touched upon the Papal visit of John Paul 11 to Ballybrit in 1979 and the fact that almost 400,000 people packed into the Galway racecourse. Carol and myself were among the huge throng that arrived there early. I can still remember five of us leaving Creggs after closing time on the Saturday night, making our way to a field outside Galway where we got parking, and spending a very uncomfortable sleepless night in the car. However it was all worthwhile when the great man arrived and to this day we will never forget his ‘Young people of Ireland I love you’ address to the massive crowd. At the time I was one of those young people and we were all so thrilled and delighted to get to physically see our Pope. In the intervening years the Church itself has been hit with so many scandals, and with allegations of so much wrongdoing, including abuse of every conceivable kind, that a lot of the believers that day in Galway have long since turned their back on their Catholic religion.

And so I cannot deny that I was more than surprised when I saw on this week’s papers that more than 1.5 million young folk braved extreme heat to see Pope Francis over the weekend in Lisbon, Portugal. They were there to take part in an International Youth Festival and along with 200 bishops and 10,000 priests the Pope prayed for peace in Ukraine. It just goes to show that no matter what troubles befall the church, people will always follow

whatever religion they belong to.

Pope Francis, at 86 years of age, warned our youth about the dangers of social media, asked them to pray for peace, and met with a delegation of 15 young people from war-torn Ukraine. For some reason, on a personal level I haven’t warmed to Pope Francis in the same way that I did to John Paul 11, but he does appear to be a good leader of the Catholic Church. Anyone that can get 1.5 million people to listen to his words has to command huge respect. He visited Ireland in 2018 and impressed all who met him. It’s a big job to try to reinvigorate Catholicism, but maybe Francis is the man to do it!

And finally…

Out in Creggs we had two big family reunions over the Bank Holiday weekend with the McGoverns getting together on Friday evening in Mikeen’s (and continuing the celebrations over the weekend), while on Sunday the Whites had their family get-together.

Members of both families travelled from as far away as the United States while there were many home from England too. The celebrations lent themselves to a highly enjoyable weekend in our little village and it was great to meet up with friends and neighbours who are domiciled elsewhere.

Gospel Reflection

Sunday 13 August

How do we find God in the storms and struggles of our lives, in the trials we encounter in trying to do His will?

God commands Elijah in today’s First Reading to stand on the mountain and await His passing by. And in the Gospel, Jesus makes the disciples set out across the waters to meet Him. In each case, the Lord makes Himself present amid frightening tumult – heavy winds and high waves, fire and earthquakes.

Elijah hides his face. Perhaps he remembers Moses, who met God on the same mountain, also amid fire, thunder, and smoke (see Deuteronomy 4:10–15; Exodus 19:17–19). God told Moses no one could see His face and live, and He sheltered Moses in the hollow of a rock, as He shelters Elijah in a cave (see Exodus 33:18–23).

The disciples, likewise, are too terrified to look on the face of God. Today’s Gospel is a revelation of Jesus’ divine identity. Only God treads across the crest of the sea (see Job 9:8) and rules the raging waters (see Psalm 89:9–10). And the words of assurance that Jesus speaks – “It is I” – are those God used to identify Himself to Moses (see Exodus 3:14; Isaiah 43:10). Even Peter is too overcome by fear to imitate his Lord. His fears, Jesus tells him, are a sign of his lack of faith. And so it often is with us. Our fears make us doubt, make it hard to see His glory dwelling in our midst.

Yet, we should know, as we sing in today’s Psalm, that His salvation is near to those who hope in Him. By faith we should know, as Paul asserts in today’s Epistle, that we are heirs to the promises made to His children, Israel. We must trust that He whispers to us in the trials of our lives – that He who has called us to walk along the way of His steps – save us whenever we begin to sink.

Speakers announced for Farming Rathcroghan Conference

The full list of speakers for the upcoming Farming Rathcroghan Conference ‘Preserving the Past-Protecting the Future’ – taking place during Heritage Week at Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, Tulsk, Co. Roscommon on Friday, 18th of August 2023 – has been announced.

The conference will be formally opened by the newly-elected Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, Cllr John Keogh, who stated that it is appropriate that this conference programme was announced on the same day on which the local authority launched its Roscommon Climate Action Consultation process.

He said: “Our ambitions and plans to engage with all community organisations in this process and the exemplary role that groups like the Farming Rathcroghan EIP are playing in adapting to our overall responsibilities under the climate change objectives and targets are welcome”.

The conference will hear from a number of representative stakeholders and policy makers from the political field including Pippa Hackett (Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine), Malcolm Noonan (Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage) and MEP for Midlands-NorthWest Constituency Colm Markey.

Minister Malcolm Noonan said: “The farming

community across Ireland are trusted custodians of our natural and cultural heritage and I am delighted to be able to attend this event to learn more of the Rathcroghan partnership, a project that is doing so much to care for the exceptional archaeological landscape of Rathcroghan.

“Our National Monuments Service has been working closely with the project and its participating

landowners over recent years in supporting innovative measures for the care of archaeological monuments, including against the impacts of climate change.

“This is critically important now that Rathcroghan, as part of the Royal Sites, has been included in the Irish Tentative List and its community strives to protect and promote the history and value of this

incredible landscape while meeting its ambition for UNESCO World Heritage status”.

At the event, Martina Earley, as CEO, will be representing Roscommon LEADER Partnership, and she will have an opportunity to showcase the EU Erasmus Climate Champions project as well as highlight Farming Rathcroghan success as a European best practice.

Other speakers from the cultural heritage arena such as Dr. Daniel Curley, Manager, Rathcroghan Visitor Centre; Dr. Sarah McCarthy, Failte Ireland; Dr. Ronan O’Flaherty (Crane Bag Consulting); Dr. Brendan Dunford (Burren Programme), and Dr. Therese Conway (NUIG) will contribute to the proceedings on the day.

Speaking in advance of the conference, the Conference Coordinator & Farming Rathcroghan Project Manager Richie Farrell stated: “We would like to thank all our speakers for their participation and support. The conference is another significant step in showcasing the success of the project to date and an opportunity to advocate strongly for its regeneration and renewal.

“We are keen to ensure that all the learning, trialling, innovations, developments and knowledge gained over the last few years will not be lost and that farmers as the ‘real heroes’ in this project will continue to be supported”.

The conference is one of a number of events in the Farming Rathcroghan promotions programme and a key event under the project finalisation procedures for the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine.

Preserving the Past-Protecting the Future

As Heritage Week 12th – 20th August 2023 approaches, the Farming Rathcroghan European Innovation Partnership are using the opportunity of this annual celebration of Ireland’s cultural, built and natural heritage to showcase the work being undertaken by the project, as it enters it’s final year of current cycle of operations. The events are closely linked to the 2023 Heritage Week theme of exploring the traditions, practices, knowledge and skills and to promote continuing community and public engagement with the project.

Heritage Week offers us the occasion to demonstrate the work underway and the achievements in preserving our archaeological heritage, improving the socio-economic circumstances of farming, testing innovations in the provision of a range of archaeological and environmental measures and promoting our sense of pride in our County. The archaeology, monuments and features will always be here and remain integral to this area of County Roscommon, giving our landscape its unique character.

The cultural significance of Rathcroghan as one of the great, late prehistoric Royal Sites of Ireland, together with the equally strong historical farming tradition in the area offers the best means of managing and enhancing the landscape, preserving our heritage and protecting this sensitive environment and demonstrate the work and innovations being developed. An important aspect of the project is the continuous awareness raising required and greater recognition of Rathcroghan as a national asset, not only as an archaeological site but also as a farmed landscape. It is important that the public have access, to hear and see the practical measures and activities that are being undertaken to protect and maintain this unique landscape as well as attempting to create a vibrancy of the community that call it home. We look forward to welcoming all visitors to Rathcroghan over Heritage Week 2023.

July being both world’s hottest and Ireland’s wettest month shows need for urgent climate action

Let’s

talk about ...

Step into any pub, office, or supermarket in the country and you’re bound to find a conversation about the weather underway. It’s the de facto national pastime, the go-to topic when the conversation has nowhere else to go, and it doesn’t quite matter whether it’s gorgeous, miserable, or completely inoffensively mild outside – it’ll come up either way.

Understandably though, it’s the wet weather that ends up getting commented on the most. We’ve got more words for rain than you can shake an umbrella at: it’s lashing, it’s spitting, it’s pelting, it’s pouring (the old man, for his sins, is perpetually snoring).

We would (and probably do) talk about the rain any chance we get, even when it’s barely worth bringing up. But these last few weeks in particular, discussions about the country’s rain have felt particularly warranted.

As we move into August, we are being greeted with headline after headline about how last month was Ireland’s wettest July on record.

I’m sure few are surprised by this; it would’ve been legitimately difficult not to take notice of the seemingly endless curtains of rain descending day in, day out, in recent weeks. But nevertheless, the exact measure of July’s rain still feels staggering. Expected rainfall for the month was exceeded by a massive overshot – 215% to be exact – with the country receiving an average 178.9mm of rain over the few weeks in question.

An aspect of this piece of news that feels especially novel is that directly preceding our wettest month on record, was our hottest one: Ireland experienced average temperatures of 16°C in June of this year, breaking the previous 83-year record by over half a degree.

With multiple examples of unprecedented weather trends occurring in such rapid succession, we can deduce at least two things with ab-

solute certainty. Firstly, that ‘small talkers’ across the country will be at no loss for chitchat material. And secondly, on a much grimmer note, that the climate crisis has arrived to Ireland.

Well, in truth, it’s a bit disingenuous of me to say the climate crisis has “arrived”, as if it’s only come into reality over the last few weeks along with this June’s heat and this July’s rain. The climate crisis is neither something we haven’t seen coming, nor something we could not have argued was already generally in effect before this; after all, we’ve been hearing about rising sea levels and global temperatures for literally decades by this point.

What I mean more so is that despite the theoretical awareness of the changing climate we’ve held for the last number of years, the past few months especially has been one of the first periods during which abnormal weather due to climate change has been so unavoidably notable here in Ireland. Until recently, our cognisance of the crisis came from hearing about it in the media, not from seeing it through the window.

But the same isn’t true everywhere else. Our considerably mild climate has shielded us from the extreme weather events other nations have been experiencing with increasing regularity and severity for years; deadly floods in parts of Europe, extreme temperatures in countries closer to the Equator, hurricanes in the US, record-breaking floods in Asia, etc.

This is what I mean when I say that, comparatively, the climate crisis has only really begun to arrive in Ireland, at least in a way that affects daily life – and even as it has, we have luckily not been met with weather events as extreme as those happening in other countries.

For example, here at home, we may have been lamenting the wet and decidedly un-summery July during our casual weather discussions, but globally speaking, last month was actually the hottest on record. Countries in other parts of the world experienced searing heatwaves and vicious wildfires, and in addition to the massive environmental and infrastructural damage this led to, the fallout included several deaths and serious injuries.

Climate change is not an equal opportunities crisis. It has, and will, affect some countries more than others. And historically, because of our milder climate and access to resources (like home heating to keep us warm during colder winters, etc.), we’ve been among the less effected.

As such, we have been able to take a largely calm, political, and economical approach to environmental discussions and climate policy, because it has not yet become an emergency for us in the way it has for other countries. We have been able to talk about the changing climate as casually as we talk about the changes in the weather day to day.

This is a huge privilege, of course, and shouldn’t take away from the responsibility we should feel to tackle climate change for the sake of other countries and the planet in general. But it also won’t be true for much longer; we are already seeing landmarks like our hottest and wettest months ever, and without major action being taken, the climate crisis will continue to affect us in an increasingly extreme way as we continue forward. And it will do so exponentially, at a rate we won’t be able to keep up with resource-wise.

At a recent press conference, UN secretary-general António Guterres commented that the era of

global warming has ended, and “the era of global boiling has arrived”. The window we have to limit global temperature rise to the 1.5°C threshold is rapidly closing and failing to do so will result in irreversible and devastating consequences for both human populations and the environment.

Closer to home, the Climate Change Advisory Council recently said Ireland is not on track to honour the climate targets set in the first and second carbon budget periods and that we “must see emissions fall consistently if we are to meet our national and EU legal obligations in full and on time”.

Both globally and nationally, the climate crisis is already beginning to wreak its effects, and both globally and nationally, the opportunity to act is at risk of passing us by. Dramatic, immediate climate action is needed drastically and it is needed now, before our daily weather chats begin to revolve around much more extreme weather than a bit of July rain.

Castlerea student set to compete at national Worldskills competition

Roscommon student, Daniel Connelly, from Castlerea, will put his talents and knowledge to the test this September, when he competes at Worldskills Ireland 2023, the country’s largest experiential skills, apprenticeships, and careers event.

Taking place at the RDS, Dublin from 20th-22nd September, Worldskills Ireland is expected to welcome over 22,000 people including students, parents and teachers, and will be a live celebration of apprenticeships, skills and careers with interactive demonstrations, career zones and employers who are ready to recruit.

Castlerea native Daniel will compete in the Carpentry competition, alongside a total of 160 National Finalists, who will go head-to-head in a range of skills-based

Frenchpark ICA 60th anniversary celebrations

The Frenchpark Irish Countrywomen’s Guild was established on January 15th, 1963 with 45 members paying four shillings for yearly membership.

Fast-forward to July 2nd, 2023 and the current members celebrated the guild’s 60th anniversary alongside invited ICA members from across the country, guest of honour and Frenchpark ICA founding member, Teresa Duffy from Ballinagare, and ICA National President Hilda Roche at the Douglas de hÍde Intreperative Centre in Portahard.

Two other founder members Bridie McLoughlin and Gertrude O’Connor were unable to attend while all deceased founder members were fondly remembered.

Regional President Mary Harkin from Sligo and local Federation President Marie Gorman each expressed their delight with their visit to the centre. The celebrations continued in Frenchpark Community Centre with a traditional ICA afternoon tea meeting up with old friends, music and dancing.

Secretary Kitty Harrington briefly outlined all the benefits which the association brought to the members of the community and there were also speakers on diet, feed the family, budgeting and advisers on buying the new and modern electrical appliances. There was also advice on gardening, poultry rearing, and classes in dressmaking.

Over the years since those early days, ICA members have been very much involved in every aspect of community life. For years

they ran the annual sports day while swimming lessons were also organized, and set dancing classes were enjoyed by many. There were also farm exchanges with women from Holland and from Northern Ireland.

At that time, you could not travel to Dublin and back on the same day on public transport and so started ‘Annie’s Bus’ which regularly was used for day outings to various parts of the country including trips to the Spring Show.

One of the highlights of

the year for the children was the First Holy Communion Breakfast and there were also many Senior Citizens’ parties which incorporated a celebration for any parishioner who had reached the age of 90. The Annual Breast Cancer Walk has been equally successful since 2000 thanks to the great support in the area.

The ICA continues to go from strength to strength in Co Roscommon with two new Guilds formed this past year in Tulsk and Kiltullagh.

McGovern Family Reunion in Creggs

A very successful McGovern reunion was held over the August Bank Holiday weekend at the family homestead in Corlackin, Creggs, Co. Galway.

Over eighty family members travelled from various locations in the USA, the UK, Wales, and of course more locally.

A ‘meet and greet’ evening was held on the Friday evening at Roarke’s Bar in Creggs; a celebratory dinner at Dalton’s in Fuerty on the Saturday even-

ing, and, the icing on the cake was a marquee event at the homestead on the Sunday evening where music, song, dance and memory making greeted

the daylight. The photo shows all family present on Sunday, August 6th at the family cottage in Corlackin.

€1.2m in extra funding for Boyle Library

A further €1.2m in funding was allocated for the Boyle Library project by Minister for Community and Rural Development Heather Humphreys last Thursday.

Originally the minister allocated €4,381,178 for the project, however following procurement tenders, Roscommon Co. Council sought a further €1.2m which has now been provided.

The Library for Boyle project is now costed at €6.9m when matching funding by Roscommon County Council is added.

Welcoming news of the extra funding, Deputy Frank Feighan described it as “a further economic and urban regeneration boost” for his home town.

“Only two weeks ago Minister Humphreys was in Boyle to open ‘An Rioga’, the former Royal Hotel in Boyle,

a move which was received with great enthusiasm from local people who for too long were looking at an old derelict building in their town. Now it will be transformed into a multipurpose creative centre that will host exhibitions and become a civic space for the town with a beautiful outdoor space to the rear of the building”. He continued: “The total cost of the two projects will mean a spend of

€10m for Boyle which I hope will further stimulate more investment, both private and public”.

Deputy Feighan thanked Minister Humphreys who he said had taken on board his request for the extra €1.2m to be granted in order to ensure that the project could proceed without delay.

He also acknowledged the work of staff of Roscommon County Council.

Reel Thing sessions to wrap up in style!

Closing out the summer sessions of The Reel Thing Music From These Parts in Roscommon Arts Centre is Dave Sheridan (flute) and Padraig McGovern (uilleain pipes) on Thursday, 17th of August at 8 pm.

Dave Sheridan’s flute playing has been described as “a highly accomplished free-flowing fluid style, with sound technique and solid driving

rhythm” (Hot Press Magazine) and a flute style which takes on ‘Lark like qualities’ (Roots Magazine). On the back of his critically acclaimed debut album Sheridan’s Guest House, he released his second solo flute album entitled Drivin’ Leitrim Timber in 2010. This album has received rave reviews.

Pádraig McGovern hails from Ballymagovern, a townland in the Cavan-Leitrim border area, but has resided in Monaghan town for the best part of a decade. He was taught by Belturbet piper PJ Flood and heavily influenced by accordionist Vincent Tighe and the Leitrim researcher and collec-

tor Fr. John Quinn. Pádraig has recorded with numerous artists over the past decade, including a duet album with Peter Carberry entitled ‘Forgotten Gems’ (2013) and more recently with the highly acclaimed band on their self-titled album ‘Garadice’.

His recording of ‘Easter Snow’ and ‘Sally Gally’ with pianist Ryan Molloy was shortlisted in the best folk track category at the 2021 RTE folk awards.

“The new Fertiliser Database sets out very tight and potentially unworkable timelines for farmers this autumn. We need much more flexibility and further discussions to develop a workable system,” he said.

From September 1st, any farmer who wishes to purchase fertiliser, including lime, must be registered on Agfood. Furthermore, as it currently stands, all farmers are required to enter closing stocks, even if no fertiliser is on the farm, by mid-October.

“The mid-October deadline is going to prove very challenging, particularly for farmers who will need assistance in registering. Extending this deadline makes sense and will ensure farmers have the time to comply with this requirement,” Paul O’Brien added.

The Department of

Agriculture are also seeking any farmers importing fertiliser from Northern Ireland to register as a Fertiliser Economic Operator. There was a sharp

Forestry programme ‘a lost opportunity’ - IFA

Following the EU Commission’s approval of the afforestation scheme under the new Forestry Programme, IFA Farm Forestry Chair Jason Fleming has described it as “a lost opportunity”.

“The funding for the scheme is very strong but unfortunately the way the scheme is constructed will turn many farmers off the programme. It is a lost opportunity,” Jason Fleming said.

Mr Fleming added that the IFA has consistently raised several issues with the programme, but the Government has not acknowledged these concerns.

“As a result,” he said, “the programme won’t meet the needs of farmers and lacks reassurance for farmers regarding the commercial viability of forestry investments”.

New Suckler scheme ‘a major disappointment’

The Irish Natura & Hill Farmers Association has expressed major disappointment with the newly announced National Beef Welfare Scheme.

National Vice-President Micheal McDonnell has called on the Minister and his officials to review the scheme stating that there needed to be an increase in the overall payment rate and as well as a full review around the IBR testing requirement.

“This scheme was eagerly anticipated by suckler farmers, especially those that didn’t join SCEP,” he said.

“While it is positive that there are no impediments to joining as there is with the Bord Bia requirement under SCEP, the reality is that for the vast majority of suckler farmers there is no great incentive to join”.

Mr McDonnell said that INHFA proposals had

increase in the level of fertiliser imported from Northern Ireland in 2023 due to the price disparity with the South. Accordingly, the process of

FARMING DESK

registering to import fertiliser directly must be kept as simple as possible.

“We are seeking a meeting with Department officials to raise the

above issues and ensure a more common-sense approach is taken,” the IFA National Environment & Rural Affairs Chair concluded.

“A significant chunk is going to support vets, labs and even the meal compounders, who will have less customers if suckler farmers go out of business”.

Mr Cosgrave said that he was also concerned about the lack of certainty regarding a scheme for 2024 and subsequent years.

“Farmers are in the dark about the long-term plans for the sector and this is having a serious impact, not only on planning for the future, but on mental health,” he concluded.

‘Scheme supports service providers, not farmers’

pointed for the need for a front-loaded payment on the first 10 cows and practical measures and payment rates that would encourage participation.

“Unfortunately, the €50/cow payment rate is well short of what is required and while some may argue that there is a front-loaded payment on the first 20 cows, most of the financial benefit will be off-set through the IBR testing requirement”.

New scheme lacks ambition – ICSA

ICSA Suckler Chair Jimmy Cosgrave has said the new suckler scheme ‘lacks ambition’ and demonstrates that the association was “100 per cent correct” when it campaigned for a coupled suckler payment in the CAP strategic plan.

“The unfortunate thing is the public is being led to believe that this scheme is delivering €28 million to suckler farmers when it isn’t in reality,” he said.

The IFA too has expressed dismay at the new National Beef Welfare Scheme, with Livestock Chairman Brendan Golden claiming the scheme is “a support for service providers, not farmers”.

“This is such a poorly designed scheme. The payment per farmer is far too low and on too few cows. Most of it will leak to vets, laboratories and others. The inclusion of IBR testing is a huge error of judgment by the Minister,” he said.

“The scheme is an insult to suckler farmers and fails miserably to deliver on his commitment to provide suckler farmers with a replacement scheme for BEEP-S with similar ambition and practical measures”.

Mr Golden went on to say: “Suckler farmers will not be taken for fools by the Minister with this pathetic offering. He must go back to the drawing board with his officials to identify practical measures that add value to our farms,” he said.

This scheme must be redesigned; practical measures included; payment rates increased; and ceilings brought in line with the BEEP-S it is replacing,” he concluded.

In the heart of the community!

Big fundraising day for Athleague/ Tremane defibrillator project

Athleague/Tremane defibrillator group was established in 2016 and is a not for profit organisation that provides CPR training in the community on a voluntary basis.

CPR is used when a person is in cardiac arrest and early CPR is crucial to give the person the best chance of survival.

The secret to commencing CPR early is to have people in the community trained and who are willing to respond when required. Currently, the group has a list of 49 volunteers who are trained to deal with a cardiac arrest and this early intervention is very important until the ambulance service arrives.

Of the 49 volunteers on their list, 36 have been trained directly

by the group. The remainder are people who have CPR training completed through other providers, mainly their occupation, for example nurses, ambulance staff and physiotherapists.

Training is carried out every two years and their instructors are affiliated to the Irish Heart Foundation and the American Heart Association and they themselves are recertified every two years to ensure their teaching is up to the highest standards. They also own a selection of training aids i.e. manikins and trainer defibrillators to ensure the volunteers are trained to the best possible standard.

As well as the CPR training provided, the group also own and maintain six defibrillators in the community that are accessible in the event of an emergency.

These defibrillators require regular maintenance to ensure they are in perfect working order at all times. This maintenance includes the replacement of the de-

fibrillation pads every two years, regardless if they were used in an emergency or not. The batteries, although having a lifespan of between five and seven years, are a costly item to replace when they reach their expiry date. The defibrillators are also checked on a monthly basis by local volunteers and any issues are reported to the committee to have them rectified.

Already this year, the group have spent over €800 on the replacement of the pads and over €300 on a new battery that had reached its expiry date.

To help them to continue to provide their training and keep their defibrillators maintained, they are having a fundraising day on Sunday, August 20th.

The day is based on a number of healthy activities to get people out and about, get a bit of exercise and meet neighbours and friends.

The day starts with a 5km walk at 12 noon from Athleague

INAUGURAL JOHN TULLY TRIATHLON…

Community Centre. Registration takes place from 11 am and refreshments will be served afterwards. Please be aware that the walk is on a public road and for safety reasons, all those taking part should wear a hi viz vest. There will be stewards on the route on the day and all instructions will be given before the start.

The cost to enter the walk is €10 per person, €15 per couple or a family of three or more is €20. The second part of the day is using the local amenities of the River Suck and the Suck Valley way by means of a swim and a walk.

At 3 pm, a swim starts from Castlecoote, starting at Castlecoote Stores to Athleague, a distance of approximately 7.5km (€20 entry).

Along this route, another swim starts at 4 pm from Castlestrange Bridge, 3km approximately (€15 entry).

Finally, at 4.30 a group will be

starting from ‘Rushes Bridge’ to Athleague, 1.5km approximately (€10 entry).

The aim is for everyone to finish at the Angling Centre in Athleague at the same time so there are plenty of options for everyone’s swimming ability. For safety reasons, tow floats must be used for the swim and kayakers will be in attendance on the routes.

Registration takes place in the Angling Centre from 2 pm and refreshments will be served afterwards. For further information or to confirm your attendance please call Adrian on 087 9460908 before Thursday, 17th of August.

While the swim is taking place, there is also a Suck Valley Way Walk from Castlecoote to Athleague, starting at 3 pm. Registration will take place in both Athleague Angling Centre from 2 pm and Castlecoote outside Castlecoote Stores from 2.30 pm and entry costs the same as

the 5km walk, also with refreshments afterwards.

To finish the day off, there is music in the Bridge House from 7-10 pm with local musician, Kenneth McCormack. Everyone is welcome to attend.

For further details on any of the events or to donate to the defibrillator group, please contact Adrian on 087 9460908 or Paula on 086 1016794.

You can also find them on Idonate at Athleague/Tremane Defibrillator Group.

Cox & Walsh Estate Agents: High demand sparks urgent call for properties across Roscommon, Longford, and Leitrim

Cox & Walsh Estate Agents, based in Dromod, Co. Leitrim, an up and coming name in the local property market, is celebrating a remarkable first half of the year with unprecedented demand from eager buyers across the region.

As the buzz in the market continues, the firm is urgently calling on property owners to seize this opportune moment and get in touch with them.

The surge in demand has left hundreds of prospective buyers feeling disheartened as they hunt for their dream properties. In particular, there is an insatiable appetite for renovation projects, houses in need of modernisation, and even derelict properties. Homebuyers are keen on turning these hidden gems into their ideal abode.

Turnkey properties have been ‘flying off the shelves’ in recent months, almost selling out, with qualified buyers ready to take the plunge. Cox & Walsh Estate Agents extend a direct appeal to property owners considering selling their properties: “Now is the time to act!”

To connect with the eager pool of buyers, property owners can reach out to Cox & Walsh Estate Agents via phone at 071 9658600 or through email at office@ coxandwalsh.ie. The team stands ready to facilitate seamless transactions for both sellers and buyers alike.

Adrian Cox, Partner with responsibility for Client Relations at Cox and Walsh, spoke enthusiastically to the Roscommon People: “The business community is equally active in the Shannonside region. Entrepreneurs and investors are seeking opportunities in the hospitality, retail, and industrial sectors.

“The region is brimming with potential, and properties suited for commercial ventures are in high demand”.

As the property market continues to thrive, Cox & Walsh Estate Agents invites all property owners to capitalise on the prevailing enthusiasm. Whether it’s a renovation project, a turnkey property, or a commercial opportunity, this is the time to make the most of the market fervour.

The family of the late Marion would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all those who offered their sympathies and support during this difficult time, following her passing in Brisbane, Australia on 8th July. We thank those who attended Marion’s Remembrance Mass in St. Croan’s Church, Ballymoe especially those who travelled long distances. Your presence on the day, phone calls, messages, and cards of condolence and support, have provided us with strength and comfort during this difficult time and we are deeply grateful.

We sincerely thank Fr. Julian for conducting the beautiful Mass, and Joe Healy and Grainne McDonnell for the music and singing that added a special touch to the ceremony. Our gratitude also goes to Noel Gibbons for his valuable assistance, Kathleen Coyne for preparing the church, Eileen Flynn for providing the refreshments, and Mahon’s Bar for their attentive care during the gathering after the service. Your kindness and support have meant so much to us, and we are truly grateful for all the ways you have shown your love and sympathy during this time of sorrow. Your gestures have made a difference and helped us find strength in the midst of grief.

May Marion’s soul Rest In Eternal Peace. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for the intentions of all.

Timothy secured a bronze medal in both the C3 scratch race and omnium at the UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow this week.

Timothy finished off a successful championships for Team Ireland with a third-place finish in the scratch race therefore earning a podium spot in the women’s omnium, which ranks riders on four events; individual pursuit, 500m time trial, 200m time trial and scratch race.

Speaking to media afterwards, the former Roscommon footballer said she was happy with the medal.

“It was a very negative race, no one was really trying anything because it was such a small group as well, but I suppose a medal is a medal so I’m happy with it now.

I’m kind of used to bronze and fourth places so it’s good going into next year and we’ll see what we can do,” she said.

Her performances in Glasgow set Richael up nicely for the Paracycling Road World Championships later this week.

< SEAMUS DUKE

St Dominic’s return to the senior ranks was a successful one as they had two points to spare against Michael Glavey’s in Knockcroghery last Friday night in a game that started in benign conditions but ended in a downpour.

Two goals in the first quarter proved crucial as Dominic’s went on to close out the win after Glavey’s had staged a comeback after half-time.

The fact that this was a poor, error-strewn match won’t bother Dominic’s as victory in this first

- Callington Ltd IFC Roundup Éire Óg off to a flier!

In Group A, last year’s finalists Éire Óg made a super start to their campaign as they travelled to Kiltoom and came away with a nine-point win. The Loughglynn side were 1-7 to 0-6 up at the break. Conor Cox scored 2-6 for them in what was a comfortable victory.

In the other game in that group, there was a very important win for Shannon Gaels in a local derby against Kilmore. The Croghan side came out on top by 0-9 to 0-4 in a low-scoring match, having led by 0-6 to 0-2 at the break.

In Group B, there were two very impressive performances from teams expected to be involved at the business end of this year’s championship.

St Croan’s defeated Kilbride by seven points, scoring 2-10 in the process, while Fuerty easily overcame St Aidan’s by 3-14 to 0-5 with Niall Kilroy scoring 1-7.

In Group C, Elphin, who were relegated from the senior ranks last year, edged out a gallant Pádraig Pearses side but it took a late appearance from Fintan Cregg to seal the win. Cregg came on with ten minutes remaining, scored two points and was influential as Elphin scored 1-2 late in the contest to prevail by 1-12 to 0-10.

Castlerea St Kevin’s started their campaign in fine style as they were the comfortable 1-10 to 0-5 winners against Creggs. The only goal of the game came from the impressive Adam McDermott (who scored 1-5) 12 minutes into the second half.

fixture in the group is very important with games against St Brigid’s and Pádraig Pearses coming up. By contrast Glavey’s are now on the back foot in the group after only one match.

Both sides lined out without several key players. Keith Doyle was an absentee from the Dominic’s side, while Glavey’s, without Andy Glennon, Cathal Heneghan, and Dylan Ruane, struggled up front. In the end, the introduction of Dominic’s subs Daire Keenan and Jamie Tiernan proved a major factor and swung the match for the home side in the end.

After Sean Burke had opened the scoring for Glavey’s in the first minute, the next two scores of the game were goals for St Dominic’s. In the second minute Tommy Hurley’s excellent pass was finished by the influential

Eoin McCormack, and in the 13th minute, Karol Feerick and Cian Kelly set up Hurley who volleyed soccer-style to the net.

Caoileann Fitzmaurice was keeping Glavey’s in the hunt with some excellent free taking and at half time it was Dominic’s 2-1 Glavey’s 0-4.

Glavey’s played their best football in the third quarter and twice they came to within a point, but the late introduction of subs Keenan and Tiernan who got three fine points from play between them, saw Tomás Gilleran’s side over the line.

St Dominic’s: Cormac Miley; Micheal Byrne, Jack Lohan, Anthony Naughton; James Miley, Eoin McCormack (1-1), Ethan Connaughton; Paddy Fallon, Senan Farrell; David Gately, Karol Feerick, Cian Kelly (0-1); James

Brigid’s down rivals while Clann beat champions

Following last weekend’s opening round of fixtures in the Hodson Bay Group Senior Football Championship, Seamus Duke takes a look back on the action which saw big wins for St Brigid’s and Clann na nGael…

Group A

Having shocked Boyle with a six goal salvo (see ‘Game of the Weekend’ match report), Roscommon Gaels are now in a strong position in this group with a home game against Western Gaels to come in round two.

In the other game in the group, St Faithleach’s and Western Gaels battled it out in Frenchpark. There was little between the sides in an evenly fought opening half with Finbar Cregg prominent for The Gaels and Ciaráin Murtagh for the Ballyleague men, as the sides went in at the break at 0-6 each. But Faithleach’s were the better side in the second half and they kept their noses in front and sealed an important victory with a goal from Cathal Gunn in injury-time. Dave Rooney and Ciaráin Murtagh scored 0-9 between them for Faithleach’s.

Group B

In the big game in Kiltoom, St Brigid’s just about deserved to pip their great ri-

vals Pádraig Pearses in what was a very tight match. Ben O’Carroll and Bobby Nugent led the scoring for the home side who led by 0-7 to 0-6 at half-time. With ten minutes to go, Pearses drew

level at 0-9 each but a point from play from Ronan Stack and a ’45 converted late in the game by Shane Cunnane saw Brigid’s over the line.

In the other game in this group, St

Dominic’s scored what could prove to be a crucial victory when they had two points to spare against Michael Glavey’s in Knockcroghery on Friday night (see match report above).

Group C

Clann na nGael put their recent poor form behind them to easily defeat a very disappointing Strokestown side at Johnstown. Goals from Ruadhri Lennon, Sea Henry and the impressive Ciarán Lennon (who scored 1-4) helped Clann to a 12-point win. Defending champions Strokestown will now be looking over their shoulders as they face Oran in the next round. Clann had led by 2-5 to 0-8 at the break.

Oran were the four-point winners against Tulsk in Creggs. Charlie Carthy and Ciaran Lawless scored 0-9 between them on the night for Sean Staunton’s men, who led 0-8 to 0-3 lead at the break having played with the breeze in the opening half.

Tulsk were much better in the second half but Oran were the deserved winners. Tulsk now face a tough match in the next round against Clann while the game between Oran and Strokestown will be the game of the next round with so much at stake at both ends of the table.

Gillooly leads Gaels in Boyle rout

game of the weekend

Hodson Bay Group SFC (Group A)

Round 1

Roscommon Gaels 6-8

Boyle 2-12

< SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon Gaels produced a ruthless first half of finishing at Abbey Park in Boyle last Saturday evening to swat away the challenge of a shell-shocked home side, and make a big early statement that they will have a major say in the destination of the Fahey Cup in 2023.

In all the years covering the Roscommon club championships, this writer

cannot recall any team scoring six goals in one half of a senior football tie but that’s what happened here the Gaels, aided by a first-half hattrick from Peter Gillooly, ripped the Boyle defence to shreds from the very first whistle.

It was only late in the second half that Boyle made any impression on the scoreboard and at that stage the game was long over as a contest.

On a sunny evening, the Gaels set about their task as early as the first minute when Gillooly buried a low shot to the Boyle net with barely 30 seconds gone. Rory Carthy pointed a 9th minute free for the town side and the warning signs were already there for Boyle.

In the 13th minute, the fleet-footed Gillooly twisted and turned before finding the net again to put his side seven points clear. Cian McKeon was by far Boyle’s best player on the day, and he pointed from a free and from play in the 18th and 23rd minutes to get his side off the mark.

But the Gaels were clinical and in the second quarter it looked like every time they went down the field they were going to score a goal. In the 22nd minute, Cian Connolly set up Kieran Kilcline who fisted home number three.

Gillooly was at it again two minutes later with his third goal following a superb run and side step. Then, in first-half injury-time, Kilcline was the provider as Richie Walsh raced in to fist home the fifth goal and just before the break Gillooly did the spadework for John McManus who flicked home, and incredibly at the half way mark it was Roscommon Gaels 6-2 Boyle 0-6.

The Gaels began the new half with points from Rory Carthy and Richie Walsh (both frees) before Boyle awakened from their slumber. In the 34th minute, Daire Cregg blasted home their opening goal at the third attempt to give them some hope, but in truth the outcome had been decided even at that early stage.

By the end of the third quarter, Frankie Dolan’s men were still 15 points up (6-7 to 1-7) and it was damage limitation for Boyle after that. McKeon kept battling away for Cian Smith’s side and in the 54th minute Enda Smith converted a penalty after he himself was fouled. Three late frees from Donie Smith took the bare look off the scoreboard from their point of view

This was a super display from the Gaels who will now be looking at a quarter-final spot when they face Western Gaels in the next round. Senan Lambe had a proverbial stormer of a

match all through and he and Cathal Dineen were excellent in defence. Further up the field, Mark Purcell, John McManus, Cian Connolly, Kieran Kilcline, Richie Walsh and Peter Gillooly were outstanding. For a very disappointing Boyle side, who now face a huge game against St Faithleach’s in the next round, only Cian McKeon stood out while there were some flashes of good play from Daire Cregg and Donie Smith. But their problems in defence will have to be ironed out if they are to have any chance of progressing to the business end of the championship this year.

Teams and Scorers: Roscommon Gaels: James Fetherstone; Ronan Gleeson, Senan Lambe, James Connolly; Brian Kelly, Ciaran O’Reilly, Cathal Dineen; Mark Purcell, John

McManus (1-0); Ethan O’Reilly, Cian Connolly, Rory Carthy (0-2, frees); Richie Walsh (1-4, 3 frees), Peter Gillooly (3-2), Kieran Kilcline (1-0). Subs: Ryan Conlon for Carthy (42), Paddy Fannon for R Gleeson (55), Fionn Hoare for O’Reilly (61).

Boyle: Rob Kearney; Daniel Casey, Luke Glennon, Killian Cox; Oisin Cregg, Enda Smith (11), Sean Purcell; Roch Hanmore, Cathal Feely; Dylan East, Tadgh McKenna, Cian McKeon (0-5, 2 frees), Daire Cregg (1-2), Donie Smith (0-4, 4 frees), Luke McGrath.
