Traders voice concerns over town centre design Local traders remain divided on whether or not the west side of the new-look Market Square in Roscommon town should be reopened to traffic.

Last month, Roscommon County Council indicated that a one-way traffic system will operate there, with the reopening likely to take effect from later this month.

Today, the Roscommon People presents a special online video report featuring the views of some local people (see our social platforms), along with a news report in this issue. The redesign of the Square has itself been widely welcomed, but the mooted return of traffic on the ‘west side’ is dividing public opinion.

In Dan Dooner’s report on page 21, a number of well-known Roscommon traders welcome plans to allow traffic west of the Square, but voice frustration over the removal of parking spaces and load-

ing areas, steps which they say have had a negative impact on their business.

One trader said more space should be given to loading bays in order to prevent illegal parking and traffic congestion.

I am a part-time farmer and I understand that I will inherit my father’s farm after his death. He is quite elderly and in poor health at present. Whilst I will obviously be very grateful for the farm I am very concerned that I may be left with a large tax bill. I believe the farm may be worth around €750,000 at the moment. I understand that the relevant tax date will be the date of my father’s death. Please advise me.

At present, a child may inherit up to €335,000 from their parents without being liable for tax. Any inheritance valued in excess of this amount will be taxed at a rate of 33%. This tax is called Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT) or more commonly inheritance tax or gift tax.

However, farmers may qualify for a very valuable relief called Agricultural Relief. If you qualify for the relief then the CAT will be calculated on 10% of the market value of the agricultural property received as a gift or inheritance. You essentially get 90% of the market value of the agricultural property tax free.

Example, if you qualify for Agricultural Relief the value of the farm you are scheduled to inherit will no longer be valued at €750,000 for tax purposes. Instead it will be valued at just 10% of its value and you will be considered to have received an inheritance of €75,000 for tax purposes, well below the tax threshold resulting in €0 inheritance tax liability.

In order to qualify for this 90% Agricultural Relief you must pass two tests i.e. be a “farmer” and also an “active farmer” as defined by the Revenue Commissioners.

The farmer test is a financial test whereby 80% or more of your gross assets, after receiving the agricultural inheritance, must comprise farm assets.

You must also be an active farmer for 6 years after you get the inheritance of agricultural property OR you must lease the land to a person who is an active farmer for the 6 year period. An active farmer is a person with a formal agricultural qualification or if you do not hold one of the formal agricultural qualifications you must spend 50% of your normal working time farming agricultural property.

Such criteria applies to a gift or inheritance of agricultural property.

May I respectfully suggest that you liaise with your Accountant and secure tax planning advices so as to ensure you are best placed to qualify for agricultural relief in due course.

Flurry of live local events this summer! < DAN DOONER

Summer 2022 promises to be the busiest season for festivals, shows, and other live events in many years as organising committees return to action following two years of Covid-19 restrictions.

Agricultural shows will be high on the agenda in the coming months and while the Castlerea Show committee staged a very successful car wash fundraiser last weekend, the Strokestown committee was unveiling its plans to members of the local media.

First up is the extremely popular Boyle Arts Festival, which takes place from Thursday, July 14th to Saturday, July 23rd. The event will be officially opened by New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade champion, Hilary Beirne, and will play host to up to 50 events including an impressive mix of live music, visual art, drama, storytelling and comedy.

The O’Carolan Harp Festival and Summer School makes a welcome return to Keadue from July 29th to August 1st with live musical performances and a number of workshops. First held in 1978 to commemorate ‘the blind harper’ Turlough O’Carolan, who lived in the area, the festival features céilithe, harp recitals, lectures, music ses-

August will see a number of events taking place including Ballygar Carnival over the August Bank Holiday, and the Ballintubber Heritage Festival.

Plans are being put in place for Castlerea Agriculture Show on the August Bank Holiday weekend while Roscommon Agricultural Show returns to Hannon’s Field on August 20th.

Last Thursday night, the Strokestown Agricultural Show committee detailed their extensive plans for the return of the event on Saturday, September 10th.

With restrictions lifted and communities coming together to plan major events again, Summer 2022 promises to be a busy festival season!

Appeal for public to foster or adopt kittens The Roscommon Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Roscommon SPCA) is once again appealing to the people of County Roscommon to please consider fostering or adopting one of the many kittens and young cats being surrendered to them at the moment.

‘Kitten Season’ is in full swing (April to September), and the Roscommon SPCA has already been inundated with reports of very young pregnant cats and very small kittens requiring their care.

Just last week, a number of different litters of kittens were surrendered to the Roscommon SPCA – that’s a lot of cats in the space of a few days to find homes for when all the current foster homes are full! One of the litters reported was four beautiful black kittens found on their own beside the canal in Athlone. The kittens are now safely in the care of one the Roscommon SPCA fosterers and have to be hand-reared as they were far too young to be taken from their mother.

The Roscommon Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is completely volunteerbased, and they rely solely on the animal fosterers who take care of the animals on their behalf.

The Roscommon SPCA takes care of all food, lit-

ter, and any medical costs that might arise while the animal is being fostered. If you do not have the time or resources to adopt a pet, perhaps you could foster cats/kittens for a time until they find their forever home?

Roscommon SPCA Foster Homes are filling up fast and the Roscommon SPCA is appealing to people to please consider fostering an animal on their behalf while it awaits adoption. ‘Local Museum Day’ at reimagined National Famine Museum in Strokestown

Following a €5 million investment, the newly-developed state-of-the-art National Famine Museum will open to visitors at Strokestown Park in early July 2022. Ahead of its general opening, the Irish Heritage Trust is inviting local communities to see the reimagined National Famine Museum on this Tuesday, June 14th, as part of International Museum Week 2022.

“We are delighted to be hosting our ‘Local Museum Day’ on Tuesday, June 14th, and look forward to welcoming the Roscommon community and those further afield as our guests to see the development work undertaken here over the last eighteen months,” commented John O’Driscoll (General Manager, The National Famine Museum, Strokestown Park).

“International Museum Week 2022 is the perfect opportunity to showcase Ireland’s new National Famine Museum at Strokestown Park where the unique story of the landed gentry and their tenants is told in an authentic and moving way”.

Guided tours of the museum on the day will be at 12 pm, 2 pm and 4 pm.

“There will also be information on local employment opportunities and the Irish Heritage Trust Volunteering Programme, as well as the chance to learn about the benefits of Irish Heritage Trust Membership” said Mr. O’Driscoll.

Saturday As sequels go, this evening’s prime time thriller didn’t disappoint. Stylistically, it was significantly different to the original.

Last time, the impact came via one dramatic, short scene. This time, viewers were in suspense right up to the final shot.

In the first instalment of the dark Cody-Shefflin handshake franchise, the protagonists had gone for that short, sharp, scary impact…stunning viewers.

That original – ‘The Icy Stare’ – was quite terrifying, and had Cody in the lead role. Fans were already familiar with some of Cody’s earlier work, including his memorable performance in ‘Marty Morrissey, say one more feckin’ thing and I’ll eat you for breakfast’.

This evening’s sequel to ‘The Icy Stare’ wasn’t like the original – which revolved entirely around one dramatic, spine-chilling moment that will live in our memory forever – but was more of a drawn-out suspense thriller.

For starters, Shefflin had more air-time.

The action began (at the final whistle in the Leinster Hurling final) with Cody (playing the villain) bounding on to the stage (Croke Park). Meanwhile, his brilliant protégé-turned-rival surprises viewers by standing rooted to the spot, arms stubbornly folded. Viewers are kept guessing.

Next, in a production which is all about a handshake, Cody shakes hands with almost everyone…bar his great rival. In a clever twist, Shefflin, who used to dance around Croke Park while Cody stood largely expressionless on the sideline, now stands largely expressionless on the sideline while Cody dances around Croke Park. They’re playing with our minds now.

After all this almost unbearable suspense, the finale…Shefflin suddenly sprints towards Cody, viewers are on the edge of their seats, Cody steels himself, moves forward slowly, they meet, there’s a brief handshake, Cody appears to mutter something, and just when you think that’s it, Shefflin – camera still rolling – retreats, while shaking his head several times. As sequels go, this was good!

(In the great tradition of the cinema, the main feature had been preceded by a light warm-up film, in which 30-odd men are seen pucking about with hurleys and a sliotar).

Sunday An odd front-page graphic on the Sunday Independent, which shows a photo of each of the main party leaders – McDonald, Martin, Varadkar and Ryan – along with their poll ratings. Plonked in the middle (on 50% approval rating) is Queen Elizabeth, hardly a prospective future Irish Taoiseach. Lamely seeking to justify the Sindo’s silliness is a sub-heading – ‘Queen more popular than all party leaders’.

What a stretch! It’s not as if those polls were comparing like with like, i.e. respondents weren’t assessing the Queen on her approach to the housing crisis/Coalition options!

I mean, if they had asked the people of Ireland what they thought of Harry Styles or Ed Sheeran or Ant & Dec, any of the aforementioned would presumably have polled higher than our political party leaders!

Sunday Tony Kelly’s sideline cut to catapult today’s Munster hurling thriller into extra-time was

beyond stupendous. This is sport at its most wondrous.

Limerick – the team of the era – in front by a point, in possession, time almost up.

As Limerick defenders try to escape their pursuers, Clare pressure forces sliotar and man across the line. Kelly arrows an extraordinary score between the uprights from an utterly unforgiving angle.

Limerick went on to win this classic in extra-time, but Kelly’s astonishing skill and audacity under pressure was the stuff of childhood sporting fantasy.

Monday It’s nice the way bank holidays effortlessly slow everything down, stripping the streets of traffic, an air of serenity descending.

It seems as though everyone (well, maybe bar people who have to work on the day) routinely slows down their own personal ‘Pace of Life’ dial on a bank holiday.

What to do? Well, being self-employed and with another Roscommon People going to print on Wednesday, I could work…but there are other options. The garden. Or a lazy day! Could we even begin a Netflix series, or finally watch – without feeling guilty – an old black and white movie? Where’s Alfred Hitchcock when you need him?

Problem is, you feel you need to be doing something. So I find myself (I can find little else there) in the shed, ready to declutter it again (official title: ‘Rearranging things in a largely pointless exercise’).

Various mysterious DIY-type items I’ve bought over the years rest on shelves, as if hinting at our sometimes tense relationship. The strimmer lies against a wall, and suddenly I remember I have to put a new line into it. A job for Thursday!

But I digress.

By mid-afternoon, we decide to go for the proverbial ‘spin’. So, at the expense of the strimmer and Alfred Hitchcock, we hit the road. A couple of hours later, we’re in Sligo, which is as appealing as ever.

The guest is all smug analysis, but I’m completely distracted by the absolute mess his study/bedroom is in! I’m sorry, sir, but we cannot take your political commentary seriously if you’re prepared to go on live TV with a pile of rubbish in the background!

Another man dealing with his own ‘mess in the background’ is the embattled Prime Minister. While Johnson wins the vote, far from being a great endorsement, it’s a pretty disastrous result. As Sky reporters keep gleefully reminding us, 148 Tory MPs have rebelled against their own leader.

Boris has won a battle, but he may be about to lose the war. At best, distraction lies ahead for the Conservatives; at worst, civil war.

In whirlwind interviews with delighted hacks, Johnson loyalists twist logic in a desperate attempt to spin this as a good result. In the shadows, even in the open, rebels are sharpening their knives. Alfred Hitchcock would have loved it.

N5 bypass contract to be awarded next year < DAN DOONER

Addressing the Seanad on Thursday last, Minister of State Pippa Hackett confirmed that the contract for the N5 Ballaghaderreen to Scramogue bypass project is expected to be awarded early next year.

Work on the 33km stretch came to a shuddering halt earlier this year when contractor Roadbridge entered receivership.

Speaking in the Seanad, Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy said residents along the route had been dealing with “horrific accidents on the road morning, noon, and night over the past 40 years”.

“It is not an exaggeration to say that when one looks back over those 40 years, in excess of 30 people have been killed on the road and 60 to 70 have been injured,” he said.

Senator Murphy also highlighted safety concerns at Frenchpark, adding that there had been a “litany of accidents” in the village.

Responding to Senator Murphy, Minister of State Hackett said expressions of interest had been received.

“Roscommon County Council is currently engaged in the process of procuring the services of a new contractor to progress the construction of the project. The tender process is underway and

expressions of interest have been received,” she said.

“Subject to the successful outcome of a tender process, it is intended that the award of the main contract will happen in the first quarter of 2023. It is currently anticipated that the construction of the main scheme will take three years”.

Minister Hackett added that a pavement improvement scheme had commenced along the route in 2022 and a feasibility and options report had been received for a safety scheme at the junction of the N5 and R361 in Frenchpark.

“This will proceed to the next phase and TIl will provide the necessary funding. Active travel improvements for towns and villages along this route are also being investigated” she said.

“Approximately €51.6 million has been allocated to the N5 upgrade. It is a significant project and it is important that it be completed as soon as possible. I hope to see the tender process completed and construction starting, as projected, in the first quarter of 2023”.

Senator Murphy welcomed the news, saying that he hoped the project would be “up and running before too long”, before paying tribute to local public representatives who have continued to highlight safety issues at Tulsk and Frenchpark.

Town and Village Renewal Scheme 2022 The Town and Village Renewal Scheme supports the revitalisation of rural towns and villages. Priorities for this year’s scheme include projects which bring vacant and derelict buildings back into use and projects to develop parks, plazas, public outdoor dining spaces and recreational spaces/ amenities.

Roscommon County Council is seeking expressions of interest from towns/villages and will select, by means of a competitive process, proposals for development into detailed applications to go forward to the Department of Rural and Community Development for consideration.

Project proposals should be in the region of €250,000 and match funding will be required from successful groups.

In order to facilitate community groups to prepare an Expression of Interest Roscommon County Council will host an information session on Thursday 16th of June 2022 @ 7pm in Áras an Chontae, Roscommon, F42 VR98.

County Roscommon Slimming World donations ‘in the bag’ for Irish Cancer Society Slimming World members across Roscommon are celebrating their fabulous weight loss by donating the clothes they successfully slimmed out of, to the Irish Cancer Society.

The Slimming World groups from Roscommon Town, Castlerea, Strokestown, Boyle, Ballaghaderreen, Ballygar, Kiltoom and Athlone have collected over 350 bags of clothes that they have now slimmed out of.

Dangers of excess weight Being overweight and obesity is the second largest preventable cause of cancer in the UK and Ireland, and more than 1 in 20 cancer cases are caused by excess weight. The 2017 study in the Irish Medical Journal showed that 4.5% of newly diagnosed invasive cancers attributed to being overweight or obese, a yearly average of 784 new cases and 310 deaths. Losing just 10% of a person’s body weight can start to significantly reduce the risk of thirteen types of cancer including cancers of the breast, uterus, cervix, ovaries, and gallbladder.

Daybreak Knockcroghery nominate Ballymurray NS for €1k donation Tom Gately, Principal at Ballymurray National School, has thanked Luke Mee of Inver Daybreak Knockcroghery for nominating the school as recipients for their 2022 ‘Leading Lights’ €1,000 donation.

Mr. Gately said: “We at Ballymurray National School are delighted to be nominated by

Inver Daybreak Knockcroghery.

Our school, like others, will make great use of this donation.

“The school is currently developing a new mainstream classroom, a school car park and replacing our old sewage treatment system. We are converting the older part of our school into a Special Education

Area and the money received from Inver will be put towards that project.

Roscommon’s first ever Irish language family event

The parents association of the Gaelscoil de Híde Roscommon, were successful in their application to host Roscommon’s first ever Irish language family event, and were awarded funding by Conradh na Gaeilge in association with Seachtain na Geailge le Energia and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media.

The event is set to take place in Roscommon Library on Saturday, the 18th of June between 11

am and 1 pm. It is hoped that this first ever Irish language event for Roscommon town will be enjoyed by all in what is a magnificent facility.

The event is aimed at promoting speaking the Irish language in a public setting and is open to all! You don’t have to be a fluent speaker. All are encouraged to come and enjoy this family event and try your cupla focal! The Irish language is an important part of our culture and society and

it is great to be able to provide the opportunity for society to experience the living Irish language through a fun and enjoyable day out.

There will be some amazing spot prizes, gift bags, a raffle, colouring stations and a fantastic music session provided by the pupils of Gaelscoil de Híde and anyone else that wants to bring an instrument is welcome to join in.

Art competition winners will be announced on the

day, with prizes (kindly sponsored) to be won.

Entries for the art competition can be submitted to the Roscommon Library main desk up to the 15th of June. Art entries can be submitted on an A4 page using any medium, and the title of the art competition is ‘An Gaeilge’ (the Irish Language).

The five categories are Preschooler, Junior and Senior Infants, 1st and 2nd Class, 3rd and 4th Class, and 5th and 6th Class at primary level.

Kerrane: Health service needs more than promises < DAN DOONER

Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has said the health service needs more than mere promises from the Government.

She was commenting on figures published in the Roscommon People (June 3rd edition), which show that over 50,000 people are currently on outpatient waiting lists in the Roscommon-Galway constituency.

Among the figures, a total of 2,521 people are currently awaiting cardiology treatment, 3,781 are waiting for general surgery, while 2,042 await neurology services and 75 await neurosurgery.

The figures were released in response to a recent Parliamentary Question from the Roscommon TD. “The health service needs more than promises. We need a serious plan to reform the health service, boost capacity and staffing levels, equip our healthcare professionals, and cut wait times to deliver the timely care that patients need and deserve,” Deputy Kerrane said.

“The current Government has failed to introduce any meaningful reform, and their minimal-change regional health area plan will not face down the many challenges facing the health service”.

We often talk about people and places punching above their weight, and even though I probably shouldn’t say it, out here in Creggs there is no doubt that when it comes to playing facilities we are punching every bit as hard as Tyson Fury.

Everyone knows about the wonderful facilities (arguably the best in Connacht) that the local rugby club has, but on Saturday evening last, after more than three years, our totally revamped GAA grounds hosted its very first game – and the new playing pitch has to be seen to be believed.

As large as Croke Park is, it will test the fitness of any lad or girl that gets the chance to play on it. All I can say is thank God I was long retired before this pitch arrived or I would surely have blown my head gasket. For all our young up and coming footballers, male and female, it is a fantastic development. The completed job will compare with any set-up anywhere in the county.

I have said it before, but if any alien spaceship ever lands in Creggs, they will be amazed at the quality of the playing pitches – five in all, and eventually six – that can be found within a couple of hundred yards of each other in a little rural village of less than a hundred people.

As it happened, we won our first game back on our own patch, getting the better of St Barry’s. But in case you missed out on that one, our lads are back in action this Friday night when we host Ballinameen in the next round of the Tansey Cup. Come along to support the lads and take in the brilliant reborn grounds.

After almost three years since our last home game, it’s great to be back. The many local volunteers and workers that made it possible should be rightfully proud. As for me, I am particularly pleased that there is a brand new footpath on the far side of the pitch, as I watch all the games from that side!

make a lot of difference to me anymore as every day is sort of a Bank Holiday for me now. But as I greet this lovely June morning, I am thinking back to last night’s Britain’s Got Talent final – more specifically the performance of a 14-year-old girl called Eva Abley.

Now I am the first to admit that I am not a big fan of the show, and only happen on it occasionally – usually if there’s nothing else on. I also have yet to figure out how anything can have five semi-finals, as I always believed that every competition

should only have two!

But regardless of all of that, even though she didn’t win the first prize of £250,000, the young stand-up comedienne from England’s Black Country (wherever that is) was, in my opinion, the undoubted star of the show.

Being a stand-up has to be the toughest gig of all, but to be one at 14, all while suffering from cerebral palsy, showcases an altogether different type of courage. The homeschooled girl joked about her condition and the benefits she gets because

of it, including receiving free Botox.

As Eva charmed her way into the final, it very much showed everyone that she will not let her disability define her in any way.

Where her career goes from here is anybody’s guess – as showbusiness is a notoriously treacherous and difficult industry – but whether Eva continues as a stand-up or goes down a totally different life path, she definitely has what it takes to be a success. Eva Abley was my undoubted winner of BGT’s most inspiring person award.

As it happened, it was another comedian, Axel Blake, who won the show. Along with the money, he gets to appear in front of the Queen on the Royal Variety Show. I’m sure he was a worthy winner and will have a hugely successful future, but on the bigger picture, Eva Abley showed, as so many brave people have done before her, that disability can be overcome and does not have to limit your capabilities.

Well done Eva, you were the star of a weekend that was full of so many different types of stars!

Queen Elizabeth delighted millions of viewers by appearing in a surprise comic sketch with Paddington Bear to kick-start the Jubilee concert last weekend.

A Munster final that’ll be talked about for years I could not let this week pass without acknowledging the amazing, extraordinary, and compelling hurling match that was the Munster hurling final between Limerick and Clare. If ever a game deserves to be talked about for years to come, this was it.

After the terribly disappointing Leinster final on Saturday evening, when Kilkenny beat a very poor Galway side in a horribly dull game, the Munster final delivered to such an extent that words are barely adequate to describe the incredible action. As they always do nowadays, Limerick found just enough to take their fourth title in a row, but if the counties were to meet again later in the year, can you just imagine the feast of hurling that would be?

Whether that happens or not is anyone’s guess, but either way, Sunday’s battle had everything that a game could have: ferocious intensity, unbelievably physical contests, outrageous skills, and – for the most part – great sportsmanship.

We often say that hurling is the best field game of all, and when it is played like that it is hard to argue. All I can say is that all of us who were lucky enough to see it will remember the 2022 Munster final for many years to come.

Queen…a real trooper!

Whatever you think about the monarchy, or indeed the monarch, is your own business – even over in England the population is pretty much divided – but over the weekend, as the United Kingdom celebrated Queen Elizabeth’s amazing achievement of ruling her kingdom for seventy years, I think the people agreed that whether you like the notion of having a queen or not, she is a real trooper.

Nobody does a party quite like the English, and they certainly gave it a lash, with events going on all over the place. But for me, the sketch she secretly performed with Paddington Bear was the highlight, showing that even at 96 years of age, Queen Elizabeth is still up for a laugh.

I doubt she gets the Roscommon People, so she might not read this, but on a personal basis I wish her well, and hope she enjoys a few more years as Queen of England. The future after her may be less secure, but for the moment, congrats Lizzie and very well done!

And finally…

One of the things that I do quite a lot is pocket dialling. I am continually contacting people accidentally and consequently getting numerous calls wondering what it was that I wanted. As such, I am always being told to turn off my phone, but it usually falls on deaf ears.

However, over in Texas, two-year-old Barrett Golden went one better when he recently got hold of his mother’s phone and ordered thirty-one cheeseburgers from his local McDonald’s – even leaving a $16 tip! The bill for the burgers came to $91, and his mother Kelsey distributed them amongst the lucky neighbours.

I occasionally ring our very good local takeaway, Hot & Tasty in Creggs, for an odd treat, but if I ever order thirty or so burgers, maybe Hazim should give me a buzz just in case I have pocket-dialled again! Even for me, thirty quarter pounders would be a bit much.

Lismoil National School is hosting a taster day for all primary school aged children on Saturday, June 11th, from 10 am to 12 noon. Enrolment will also take place for next year (September 2022).

Parents and children are welcome to attend on the day.

Lismoil NS is a small, twoteacher school, situated in an idyllic setting in the heart of the countryside. This school is situated in the parish of Kiltoom and Cam, and is about fifteen minutes from both Roscommon town and Athlone town. Lismoil NS prides itself in its fantastic resources, extracurricular

activities, and a low pupil to teacher ratio. We have two mainstream teachers, a Special Education teacher, and an SNA working in our school.

Its little size does not hold it back. Sports include swimming, hurling, soccer and Gaelic football. The school has just successfully received its eighth green flag and are busily preparing for their Junior Entrepreneur sale. We are a pilot school for the Modern Foreign Language programme, and this year, the children from 3rd to 6th class have been learning French as part of

this programme. All subjects are taught and enhanced with the aid of interactive whiteboards in each classroom, chrome books and iPads and a vast array of resources and library books.

We have a large play area and pitch and this summer we are hoping to enhance our outdoor learning area by developing a sensory garden.

individually tailored to the needs of the child. Children receive individual attention both in the classroom and in a 1-1 situation with a Special Education Teacher if required.

With smaller numbers of students, hands-on learning is easy to organise and manage and the learning outcomes are greater. There is much more freedom for collaborative student work and fun activities.

We all have a right to feel safe and happy at work According to Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights…‘All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood’.

Put simply, this means we all have a right to feel safe and valued in society. However, given the contents of a reader’s heartbreaking letter urging me to ‘consider writing about bullying in the workplace’, and the results of NUI Galway’s study which shows workplace bullying is costing the economy ‘€239 million per year’ it’s clear there’s a culture of intimidating behaviours occurring across all sectors of our society.

As someone who has dealt with a bully (not mine – someone I love was being bullied),

I can tell you there’s nothing quite like that soul-destroying, gut-wrenching feeling of fear and foreboding that creeps in every Sunday night in direct response to returning to a toxic workplace environment the following morning.

Therefore, on foot of this reader’s request, and as we all readapt and realign ourselves back into our workplace situations following the pandemic, I hope you’ll indulge me while I address what I believe to be the profound psychological torture visited upon those facing a tormentor every single day.

Before I go on, let me stress that objective commentary and evaluation or monitoring an employee’s/colleague’s performance in a polite, respectful and helpful manner shouldn’t be considered bullying behaviour. However, if there’s a pattern of subtly

distributed, slow, insidious, health-harming mistreatment being delivered by one or more colleagues/bosses, whether it’s verbal or non-verbal (for example sabotaging another’s work), which prevents those on the receiving end from doing their job, then that’s bullying.

I’m no behavioural expert, but it’s my belief that bullies possess not just a controlling nature, they also possess what I call people-reading skills, which they use to gain and maintain power and control over their victim, often tormenting them for years via a series of psychological and physical behaviours. A bully possesses no empathy, none; they’re narcissists who fail to consider the pain they’re inflicting upon the sensitive, caring, highly confused and stressed-out soul on the receiv-

As someone who believes our nation still carries the after-effects of the hangover left by British colonialism, I have to say every time an Irish news programme carried a report relating to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, I flicked channels.

However, two items did manage to catch my attention for the simple reason I found them both to be highly offensive. The first relates to the BBC’s guest commentator, Jamie LowtherPinkerton, describing the Irish Guards as “the Micks”. If that wasn’t inflammatory enough readers, whilst adding further commentary to the pomp and pageantry that is the Trooping of the Colour, this ill-mannered oaf described the performance as “a great Mick cocktail”.

The second erroneous fizz-up (again involving the BBC) occurred when the broadcaster displayed our tricolour – yes, our Republic of Ireland flag – during a ‘proud to be British’ montage! Deliberately provocative

In fact, it’s my belief the victim’s confusion becomes so strong (as was typical of the scenario in my loved-one’s situation), it can actually choke the victim’s confidence, preventing them from reporting the abuse, hoping and praying it will somehow magically go away. It won’t… not unless the victim or someone close to them does something about it.

With that in mind, I’d like to implore those of you who are being bullied at work to please find the courage to take action today. This could be talking to a family member or a friend, taking another colleague into your confidence, going to your company’s HR Officer, or, if you’re a member of a union, speaking with your rep.

Remember, employers are required by law to prevent bullying/harassment in the

workplace. That means being deliberately intimidated and targeted – whether physically, psychologically or sexually, etc. – by an aggressive individual at work is deemed to be illegal behaviour. Not only that, it is also illegal for the bully to punish you for reporting them… it’s called victimisation, the details of which should be highlighted in your workplace’s employee safety handbook.

To those who witness a colleague being bullied at work, please display some backbone, step up and offer your help. To remain silent and do nothing makes you not just an enabler or accomplice, it also makes you as guilty as the creepy egomaniac perpetrator.

Bullying is so traumatising, it can have serious and lasting negative mental health effects for those on the receiving end.

Therefore it is crucial we all have the information and the resources to help those worn down by it.

I sincerely hope my ‘musings’ this week have gone some way towards helping the reader who wrote to me.

However, as they wish to remain anonymous (and I fully respect that), it’s difficult to reach out to them further.

If any reader who, upon making a complaint through their employer’s procedural informal or formal practice regarding bullying behaviour, feels their situation remains unresolved, perhaps the time has come to make contact with the Work Relations Commission (WRC) on workplacerelations.ie or 0818 80 80 90. Alternatively, if you believe your safety is under threat, please contact your local garda station.

Free contraception is a basic element in Irish women’s essential healthcare

I’m old enough to remember the highly controversial vote back in February 1985 when our then-government dragged us out of the dark ages by approving the sale of contraceptives.

During that time, as a very young mother of one, I remember how difficult it was for myself and my then husband to employ, er, creative and so-called ‘natural’ methods of birth control in a desperate effort to prevent me from becoming a very young mother of two.

As someone who believes it’s nobody’s business what I do or how I utilise my uterus (before my hysterectomy), I found the power, the oppression and the ‘don’t do the deed ‘till you’re married’ (and when you are, ‘don’t use contraception’) approach of the Catholic Church to be brutal. Therefore, the availability of the contraceptive pill, with restrictions, marked a major turning point in my life.

Indeed, given the fact that this coming August, (a disgraceful thirty-seven years later), free contraception for young women between the ages of 17-25 years will be made available, it’s farcical to remember our leaders once prided themselves on placing severe restrictions on the sexual and reproductive rights of women across this land.

In those dark days, when I insisted on planning my

parenthood – as in, I wanted to wait a while before having another baby (I waited eleven years) – a doctor told me I was not being ‘sensible’. Rather, what I was doing was promoting ‘moral decay’.

When I’d stopped falling about his surgery laughing at this misogynistic dinosaur, I hopped into my battered old Renault 4 and drove straight to the Irish Family Planning Centre, located in Dublin’s Cathal Brugha Street.

There I was met by a diverse posse of rosary beadcarrying, prayer book-waving devout Catholics, who threw holy water at me and accused me, and young women like me, of ‘spreading venereal disease’.

That was then, this is now… thankfully. As a mother of two young women and a grandmother of two girls, I believe our government’s decision to make contraception freely available is not just a game-changer – it’s actually a basic element in our essential healthcare. C’mon da sisterhood!

Therefore ladies, come August, regardless of our race, religion, ethnicity, socio-economic status, or our sexual orientation, etc, we and we alone (not me, a hysterectomy and menopause have solved my reproductive issues) will have the power to decide if, when, and under what circumstances we will become parents. It’s about flippin’ time!

One man who looks sure to be well represented next week is Gordon Elliott, who said: “Our horses are in good form, and we will enter (some) for The Tote Connaught National.

It is a great track and they do an excellent job down there.

Good news for good causes…

My own research suggests National Lottery funds are supporting good causes There’s a new ad on the telly that has been creating some argument and debate around the country (including in our own house) in recent weeks. It’s presented and paid for by the National Lottery company and depicts a scene where a lady who has been selling lotto tickets in a shop in the countryside has claimed to her neighbours and customers that ninety per cent of the money taken in by the big lottery operator actually goes back out to good causes or stays in the local community.

The ad depicts the shopkeeper making the initial claims and then what could only be described as a sceptical response coming from the people who are there with her, those gathered outside the building, and one particular lady in front of her who more or less implies that the shopkeeper has lost her marbles by even suggesting such a statistic could be accurate in the first place.

The ad concludes when a man who might be described as a lookalike for Doc Brown, the eccentric scientist in ‘Back to the Future’, steps forward with a mad invention-type gadget akin to a lie-detecting machine and punches in the info – only to be told within seconds that it is indeed a fact that ninety per cent of all the money taken in by those gambling in the National Lottery games is then redistributed in the community to projects, paid out in prizes or in commission to the shop owners, and finding its way to a plethora of good causes.

Sceptical There was a time when I would also have been one of the people who might have been a wee bit sceptical about the amount of National Lottery takings that actually made its way back from the cash registers to good causes around the island – but that day has fortunately long gone. I first discovered the truth about the ‘take’ made by the lottery when I researched this local ‘dividend’ claim last summer. I was part of a group which was nominated to take part in a competition to determine the best good cause winner in the country that had actually received National Lottery money from the lottery or the Government’s sports capital grants in the previous 12 months.

Around about this time last year I was proud to stand with my colleagues and the volunteers from the Lough Ree Access for All Boat in Ballyleague and compete in the national finals – where Roscommon town’s Dorothy O’Riordan Coyle was about to become somewhat of a national celebrity.

Dorothy is a wheelchair user and one of those brave people in society who has never let her physical disability hold her back from doing anything in life. I suppose that’s why she became involved as a volunteer for the Access for All boat which had initially been funded to the tune of over €100,000 by the EU LEADER programme through Roscommon LEADER Partnership.

I work with Dorothy now every week on the same project – attracting hundreds of people with disabilities from all over the island to come to Ballyleague and enjoy the social impact of the

boat trip – and I can confirm that the €38,000 the lottery sent back to the sports capital grant section who sent it on to us was well spent two years ago in helping to pay for the original price of the boat and trailer.

Last week the lottery PR people unveiled the names of some of the good causes from County Roscommon and elsewhere in the country who are going to fight it out for the right to become this year’s national ‘Good Causes’ champion. We were thrilled to see some very decent local representatives on the list of county winners. The Lottery says that a dragon boat club from the west of Ireland, a blood bike group serving the northeast region, an Irish language radio station based in Dublin, and a refuge providing emergency accommodation to victims of domestic violence are amongst the 118 groups, sports clubs, community projects and organisations from all over Ireland who have been announced as county winners.

Apart from singing the praises of those in the finals now, the National Lottery CEO, Andrew Algeo, went on to make a very big political point on the day of the launch.

He described how significantly more individuals, charities, groups, projects and organisations all over Ireland could benefit from Good Causes’ funding if a ban on lottery betting were to be introduced.

Betting ban “If the practice of betting on lottery games were to be finally banned in Ireland, as it is in most EU countries, our research shows that National Lottery sales would increase by at least €228 million, which would result in approximately €63 million in additional funding for the Good Causes fund which would have a huge impact on communities all over Ireland” Algeo claimed.

“Last year, Benefacts established that 34% of all charitable giving in Ireland in 2021 was attributable via the National Lottery. We believe that even more charitable and community groups would directly benefit if a ban on lottery betting was put in place”.

Whatever about that scenario, two groups from County Roscommon and a further seven from the extended area around Lough Ree are now in the mix with the chance of winning up to €35,000 for the honour of being the best good cause. The popular Melting Pot ‘Dinner For U’ social enterprise, based in Roscommon town, is among the winners in the community section and the Ballinlough-Granlahan Heritage group will fly the flag in the heritage section. St Mary’s National school in Newtowncashel on the east shore of the lake will fight it out in the arts and culture section and Cian’s Kennels, a terrific charity (with Roscommon links) which allows very sick children to have their own pet stay at the Crumlin Children’s Hospital, is a worthy winner too in the counties’ section.

There is a decent pot of funds to be won here.

The total prize fund for the Good Causes Awards is €130,000 and each of the 35 finalists will win €1,000 when they are announced in June. At the awards ceremony in October, each of the seven category winners will receive €10,000 and the overall Good Cause of the Year will take home an additional €25,000.

The overall winners will be revealed at a Gala Awards Dinner in Kildare on Saturday, 1st of October. We wish them all well. Fuel prices ‘likely to get significantly worse before they get better’ PEOPLE PROFILE The BIG issue RP: Neil, we are all aware of the inflationary pressures on many businesses which are directly affecting the consumer. You have been very active on Facebook forewarning your audience of pending changes as you become aware of them. Can you tell our readers what it is that you see happening at present?

NC: Price increases are having a very detrimental effect on our customers. The costs associated with heating our homes is very real and things are likely to get significantly worse before they get better. Coal is to rise with almost immediate effect – by up to €200 per tonne. Many people are now trying to build up their personal supply for the coming winter.

This is a difficult but worthwhile exercise for those with dry storage space and for those who can afford to do so.

We are seeing many consumers mix their purchase of coal with some turf and timber, both softwood and hardwood. Old-style coals, e.g. Polish and Columbian, are on the decline.

Smokeless egg-shaped ovoids for use in open fires and closed appliances currently make up for 95% of our coal sales. The current ban on the use of smoky coals in built-up areas is set to extend to all areas on September 1st.

Online ordering has massively increased, especially since Covid, and payments by card, phone, watch devices etc. are now the norm.

Because of our free delivery service, almost all of our fuel goes out in our delivery vehicles.

There is also a move towards kiln-dried timber.

The picture on the future use of turf is unclear at present. As peat-based briquettes continue to be hit with carbon tax increases, they are becoming less attractive. They are set to be phased out by new regulations and are rapidly being replaced by briquettes made from timber rather than peat. These do not attract carbon

tax and have a very real future. However, there are many versions on sale now and there is a huge difference between them in quality terms.

We always advise customers that we are happy to deliver a single bale to try out before they decide to purchase a larger amount for the first time. This way, they will be making an informed decision as to which one best suits their open fire or closed appliance.

RP: So prices haven’t peaked yet…there’s worse to come? Why is fuel currently costing the householder so much?

NC: I had been advising my customers to hold off on purchasing more fuel than they need right now. I was hoping that there would be signs of those involved in the Ukraine war coming around the table by this time. I was wrong – the longer it (the war) goes on, the worse things will get. Coal is being bought up for industry and for electricity generation as gas becomes scarce and expensive. Even slack is in high demand in the US. The big players in the world of fuel are having to compete for the purchase of fuel like never before and this is driving prices upward. My advice has now changed – while I don’t want to create panic or to scaremonger, prices will increase rapidly.

Everyone should ‘price around’ as some fuel merchants will have more old priced stock than others and be in a position to defer the inevitable price increases. I don’t see rationing happening any time soon with regard to solid fuel and gas. However, while our gas comes from Norway through the UK, if there is a shortage across the EU member states, we will be expected to reduce our gas usage in line with our fellow EU citizens. I do see a return to home working – this will ramp up demand for home heating during the day.

RP: How are your customers reacting to the price hikes on fuel products and can you explain or justify the level of the increases?

NC: Customers are being hit very hard in the pocket. In real terms, many people are not spending more money on fuel. Their fixed

income dictates their budget for fuel, so they are getting less fuel for their same weekly allowance. There is fuel poverty out there. Some are grateful that we are heading into what is normally a warmer spell. There is also a dread of the coming winter – the longest day of the year is around the corner, and we all know the direction the short nights will be going after that. We, as fuel merchants, resist increasing prices where possible, but every increase is directly related to what it costs us to purchase the fuel from our own suppliers.

RP: Is your business model of free delivery with no minimum order sustainable?

NC: Yes, it is costing us more to deliver. I have always vowed to quit the business before I would impose a delivery charge or dictate to customers what their purchase should be. We will have to plan our routes more carefully e.g. we will now cover the Longford region on Tuesdays and Fridays, while we go to Galway on Wednesdays and Saturdays. We will never leave a customer stuck though, especially when they run out of the larger gas cylinders unexpectedly. Some very fine dedicated fuel merchants up and down the country have reluctantly given up their businesses this year. I really feel for them, their staff, their families and their customers. We intend to survive what is a very difficult period and have fortunately been able to do so thus far. We aim to increase our market share rather than focusing on a higher margin. I don’t think anybody can predict the future with any degree of certainty.

I really feel for the end user of the products we supply – they are taking the real pain in this inflationary period. With our climate, fuel is a necessity – not a luxury. I would love to see the carbon tax reduced as the current high prices are sufficient deterrent from over-reliance on fossil fuels. A decrease of the current 13.5% VAT rate to 9% across the solid fuel range would also make a tangible difference to consumers. I look forward to better times ahead for my customers and will endeavour to keep them informed of developments as I become aware of them.

Gospel Reflection

Sunday June 12 In today’s Liturgy we’re swept through time in glorious procession – from before earth and sky were set in place to the coming of the Spirit upon the new creation, the Church.

We begin in the heart of the Trinity, as we listen to the testimony of Wisdom in today’s First Reading. Eternally begotten, the firstborn of God, He is poured forth from of old in the loving delight of the Father.

Through Him, the heavens were established, the foundations of the earth fixed. From before the beginning, He was with the Father as His “Craftsman,” the artisan by Whom all things were made. And He took special delight, He tells us, in the crowning glory of God’s handiwork – the human race, the “sons of men”.

In today’s Psalm, He comes down from heaven, is made a little lower than the angels, comes among us as “the Son of Man” (see Hebrews 2:6–10).

All things are put under His feet so that He can restore to humanity the glory for which we were made from the beginning, the glory lost by sin.

He tasted death that we might be raised to life in the Trinity, that His name might be made glorious over all the earth.

Through the Son, we have gained grace and access in the Spirit to the Father, as Paul boasts in today’s Epistle (see Ephesians 2:18).

The Spirit, the Love of God, has been poured out into our hearts – a Spirit of adoption, making us children of the Father once more (see Romans 8:14–16).

This is the Spirit that Jesus promises in today’s Gospel. His Spirit comes as divine gift and anointing (see 1 John 2:27), to guide us to all truth, to show us “the things that are coming,” the things that were meant to be from before all ages – that we will find peace and union in God, share the life of the Trinity, and dwell in God as He dwells in us (see John 14:23; 17:21).

Return of traditional Leaving Cert a missed opportunity for exam reform Let’s talk about ...

THE LEAVING CERT

(A student’s perspective)

Alannah Ita Healy Over 131,000 students began their Junior and Leaving Cert exams this week, marking the first time that the traditional written June exams have been held since the beginning of the pandemic.

Unlike last year, this year’s Leaving Cert students do not have the choice to opt for accredited grades in place of written exams. Instead, the academic challenges faced by students in the past couple of years will be accommodated with a ‘tailor-made’ exam paper that gives students more question options and covers less material.

But this return to traditional exams flies in the face of the resounding consensus voiced by students in the past couple

of weeks, who have been advocating for a hybrid examination model to be implemented.

They feel that the proposed hybrid model (giving students the option of sitting the paper, doing predictive grades, or doing both) would better account for the disruption done to their education as a consequence of the pandemic – especially in the case of marginalised and disadvantaged students, whose education was disproportionately impacted.

Students en masse feel that the format of the Leaving Cert fails to make adequate accommodations in light of Covid’s impact on their education the past two years, and it’s hard to discount that view.

As it stands, the set-up of the

traditional Leaving Cert is inherently flawed. There’s no accounting for previous academic performance, there’s a greater prioritisation of rote memorisation over actual application of knowledge, and sit-down exams themselves – as opposed to alternatives such as continuous assessment or a hybrid format – put students under an inordinate amount of pressure. And this is without considering the impact of a global pandemic.

The toll that the Leaving Cert exams take on students’ mental health is irreconcilable; a six-year grind towards one make-or-break exam period is a recipe for burnout and anxiety. This rigid kind of set-up, the kind without any real person-to-person accommodations, is not going to be one that showcases the true aptitude of students, and the necessity to cram in order to succeed won’t serve them either.

Over the past couple of years, there has been such a shift in societal values, such a stress put on the importance of ‘learning from the pandemic’. Significantly, one of

the inadvertent consequences to arise from people’s negative experiences of living through lockdowns and isolation is a renewed focus on mental health, and on maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Following on from the pandemic, we’ve learned to accept a blended/hybrid working model, one with flexibility that accommodates different people and what suits them best. Surely then it’s not unreasonable

to suggest that a hybrid model for Leaving Cert assessment would not just be the best option for 2022’s students, but the best option in general?

Protest over delayed reopening of Ballaghaderreen Library < DAN DOONER

A silent protest took place outside Ballaghaderreen Library on Friday last to highlight the ongoing delays in reopening the local service, which has been closed since the outbreak of Covid-19 two years ago.

The library is now not expected to reopen until 2023 at the earliest due to the upgrades required for the My Open Library Service. As a listed building, it had already gone through a lengthy planning process for proposed upgrade works in 2020.

Speaking following the protest on Friday, David Creighton, whose sister Deirdre had worked in the library prior to her recent death, questioned the reasons behind the facility’s closure.

“My sister Deirdre had been librarian until the library closed during the pandemic.

She sadly passed away in January of this year. Two years ago, the library received a grant for upgrades but instead it closed.

Deirdre then had to commute to Roscommon while her colleague was relocated to Boyle,” David said.

“It’s hard to understand why the library closed indefinitely with no planning permission for the upgrades, or contractor in place to carry out the works”.

David said the library was a wonderful local amenity and a place where local people could meet and learn. He said that following Deirdre’s death the Creighton family received many cards and letters highlighting the valued service she and fellow librarian Eithne McDermott had provided in Ballaghaderreen.

See our social platforms for special video exclusive A number of well-known Roscommon traders have voiced their concerns this week over the county town’s new-look Square, claiming the removal of parking spaces and loading areas has had a negative impact on business.

Greg Glancy of Glancy’s Fruit and Veg says a narrower Main Street has made deliveries difficult.

“I have been working in this town for 40-odd years and I’ve never had a problem before…now though there are huge problems – it’s a joke!

“We are forced to break the law every time we deliver to businesses in the town by parking on double yellow lines. If we pull in on the Main Street like we used to do then we block up the whole town,” he said.

Mr. Glancy believes more space should be given to loading bays in order to prevent illegal parking and traffic congestion.

Local businessman Ray Gannon of Gannon’s Farm Shop said that while the Square was a welcome addition for outdoor dining, leaving it closed to vehicles (thus far) has created problems for some businesses.

for a quick few bits and pieces. It’s difficult to trade in that respect,” he said.

“Roscommon is a beautiful town to come to, and it has been a very good market town, but like any town it’s changing and people have to readjust,” he said.

Mr. Gannon added that many towns were redeveloping in a similar way but that for Roscommon, the transformation may have come too early, resulting in a hit to small local businesses.

“Roscommon needs more tourist attractions for it to become a destination town for people to visit and enjoy the likes of the new Square …then perhaps businesses can recreate themselves and divert into new horizons,” he said.

On-street traders have also been impacted by the new Square with local fruit and vegetable sellers critical of the lay-out.

Colm Lennon said finding a spot for his lorry on Main Street has become a major issue every Friday and Saturday.

“There is no parking left anymore… years ago customers could pull in alongside us here on Main Street and pick up their bits and pieces. The atmosphere is gone now on a Friday and Saturday because there’s less footfall,” he said.

“Covid had an impact too but the last year especially since this (redevelopment) started up, trade has suffered big time. It’s become a ‘drive-thru town’.

They should have left some part of the Square open to parking, either the far side of the bank (Bank of Ireland) or the near side,” he said.

Colm said he has now been forced to park his lorry on the footpath due to the lack of designated trader spaces on Main Street. He also claims that Roscommon

County Council never approached traders to seek their opinion.

“The Council has never come to me and asked me how business was going.

They never came to any of us,” he said.

“We knew it was going ahead but we didn’t think it would be like this…now business is suffering big time”.

Fellow trader, Padraig Muldoon, said his family have been trading on Main Street since his great-grandfather’s time.

“Trade-wise it’s gone very quiet and we are down in income. They’ve done a fine job (on the Square) but it’s gone to the stage where the older people are too afraid to come to us for the likes of 5 and 10kg bags of potatoes because it’s too far to walk back to the car parks,” he said.

“The other problem I have here some Fridays and Saturdays is that there might be someone parked in my spot.

Even though we pay a licence for the area it’s not held distinctly for us…there are no markings on the streets. If there was some way of recognising our area it would be beneficial to us”.

As for a possible solution to the current problems posed by Roscommon’s Public Realm Enhancement, Padraig believes reopening part of the Square to traffic is the only way forward (as the Council has pledged to do).

“I want to be able to have cars pull up beside me so any bags they need they can get. Before this there used to be plenty of space to double-park alongside me but that has been stopped,” he said.

“The only way we might be able to do that again is if people are able to pull in there between ETL and Gleeson’s and then drive out the other side”.

RosFM is on the move!

RosFM Community Radio are moving studios this weekend from the Athlone Road, where they have been since 2010, to the Lanesboro Road, in the building formerly used by the HSE. Chairperson of the board, Bernie Kearney, said that the move would signal a new era for the station: “We have been very happy in the Athlone Road for the past twelve years and would like to thank the Brothers of Charity for their kindness over that time.

“The move to the Lanesboro Road will start a new era for the station, with easy access and plenty of parking, and we will be welcoming members of the public to call in to see the new studios when they are completed”.

The station will be off the air on Friday, June 10th, to facilitate the move, but will be back to its normal schedule from Monday, June 13th.

Age & Opportunity grants for 27 Roscommon groups Twenty-seven Roscommon groups have been allocated funding totalling €13,470 as part of the Age & Opportunity Active National Grant Scheme. Nationwide, 995 groups will receive grants totalling €514,120.

The grants scheme, a combined initiative from Age & Opportunity and Sport Ireland, aims to support sport and physical activity in older age groups. The scheme provides an accessible and enjoyable means for older people in communities nationwide to reap the health rewards from doing physical activity.

Thanks to Roscommon GAA there will be some skills drills and games, while Connacht Rugby will facilitate tag rugby. There will also be soccer drills and games taking place as well as other sports day activities such as fun races, kids versus parents events, egg and spoon races, arts & crafts, and even an area for toddlers to enjoy.

Everyone who attends will be asked to put their handprint on a map of Roscommon to show how we are all part of the one local community. Strokestown Famine Museum: another fantastic chapter penned < PAUL HEALY

The other day I got a phone call from an old acquaintance whom I haven’t met or spoken to in over thirty years. He’s a ‘true blue’ Dub, born and bred in the capital, and still happily living there. Naturally, we had a good chat, but what prompted the call was interesting…he’d been making enquiries about the National Famine Way, and that had led him to me and the Roscommon People.

The National Famine Way is a 167km walking and cycling trail from Strokestown to Dublin that invites people to literally follow in the footsteps of 1,490 emigrants who took that route during the Great Famine.

The call brought home to me the extent to which the phenomenal development of Strokestown Park House (and grounds) and

later the Famine Museum and related amenities has put the area on the map, with the obvious benefits in terms of the local economy, tourism, etc. Of course the greatest contribution the Famine Museum is making is in keeping alive the story of this tragic chapter of Irish history for current and future generations.

To be fair to governments of recent times, there appears to have been steady support for the ongoing development of this wonderful, historic amenity on our doorstep. Of course most of the credit must go to Jim Callery and the Callery family, the Westward Group and all the hard-working people (like John O’Driscoll) who have driven this great project over the years. In particular, Jim Callery’s initial vision and determination is what made the ambi-

Wit of ‘The Doc’ This week (June 7th) marks the 17th anniversary of the untimely passing of one of County Roscommon’s most prominent, colourful, and controversial politicians, Sean Doherty, the uncrowned king of Cootehall.

It’s not my intention to namedrop with the following anecdote (‘The Doc’ knew everybody!) but he was quite friendly with my late father.

Rooskey Fianna Fáil cumann meetings in the 1980s were held in our pub in the village (following a tradition established when it was run by the late Kevin and Eileen Hanley of the renowned local business family). Sean Doherty and Terry Leyden often attended those meetings.

One night, Sean was having a pint with my father (Rutledge).

At the time, he would have been Minister for Justice (Sean, not my father). Addressing my father, Doherty joked (I’m pretty sure it was a joke): “Sure one day I might run for President. I’ll end up in the Phoenix Park (Aras an Uachtaráin). I might graze sheep there!”

As my father laughed, Sean had a great punchline.

“Rutledge, when I end up in the Park, sure you’ll always have a place to stay any time you’re in Dublin!”

This follows a €5m investment, with funding of €3.75m from Fáilte Ireland and €1.25m from the owners of Strokestown Park House, Westward Holdings Ltd, in partnership with the Irish Heritage Trust. Members of the public can enjoy a sneak preview on Tuesday, June 14th.

I congratulate Jim Callery, the Callery family, Westward Holdings Ltd and all associated with this fantastic new chapter in the history of Strokestown Park.

Disappointment at lack of student helpline support

Local Independent TD Denis Naughten has criticised the HSE for its “refusal” to consider establishing a mental health helpline for students currently sitting the State exams.

Deputy Naughten said this week that he is now prepared to raise the matter in the Dáil with the Taoiseach.

“The West Regional Health Forum had recommended to the HSE that the National Office of Mental Health and Wellbeing establish a mental health helpline for those sitting State exams this month,” stated Denis Naughten.

“I raised this issue directly with the Minister for Health and the HSE has now informed me that it believes establishing a national student mental and emotional helpline is not an effective means of providing information and support to this group of young people and that is extremely disappointing”.

Willie on warpath…

There was some rather funny political commentary from the Willie O’Dea School of Self-Promotion in last weekend’s Sunday Independent (of course it wasn’t meant to be funny).

Willie may not be responsible for the headline (‘Fianna Fáil is only going in one direction – downwards’) but the views expressed by him obviously inspired it.

The veteran FF TD began by announcing that he rarely attends parliamentary party meetings these days. This revelation was presumably meant to impress readers, to back up the carefully constructed image of Willie as a frustrated champion of the ordinary people, who – just like him and his fellow poor party backbenchers – aren’t being listened to by the Taoiseach and senior ministers.

One would have thought if Willie is genuinely so frustrated with Micheál Martin & Co. the very thing he should be doing is attending parliamentary party meetings! Instead, the bould Willie fires off another beauty to the Sindo News Editor.

Further on (and yes, Willie had me wilting by now) I noted that The Man Not Appointed to Cabinet by Micheál Martin spared Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien from his criticism. Naturally, Willie had it both ways: nothing much is getting done on housing, but Darragh is “determined” and “at least O’Brien listens”.

Nurse Bernie crowned Roscommon Rose 2022!

Roscommon town nurse, Bernie Ryan, was crowned Roscommon Rose for 2022 at the county selection night in the Abbey Hotel on Sunday night.

Representing Roscommon Racecourse, Bernie is a daughter of Michael and Kathleen Ryan and is currently working as a Clinical Nurse Manager in Critical Care at the Mater Hospital Dublin.

Bernie impressed during her on-stage interview in front of a large gathering and the judging panel including local businessman John Ward, 2001 Limerick Rose Paula Glynn, and Lorren Kelly, owner of The One I Love bridal boutique. She told radio presenter and compere Fergal D’Arcy that she had completed three of the six world major marathons, raising money for various charities in the process.

The young nurse also plays Gaelic football for Roscommon Gaels and has represented her

county at underage level.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Bernie worked in the Mater’s Intensive Care Unit and also completed a post-graduate Diploma and Masters in Critical Care. She also worked with the HSE’s Organ Donation and Transplant Ireland team in 2021.

She told judges that working with the team was very important to her and that she would raise awareness around organ donation if selected to represent Roscommon.

Speaking following the event, Bernie said she was shocked but “over the moon” to be selected as Roscommon’s Rose, and said outgoing Rose Eimear Reynolds would be a “very hard act to follow”.

“I just can’t believe it … it doesn’t feel real. The Roses this year were unreal…the best bunch of girls you could ask for. I think any one of us would have been a worthy winner and wonderful ambassador for

Roscommon. Shout out to all the fabulous escorts for supporting us all and special mention to John Neilan for his Escort of the Year award,” she said.

“I’m honoured to be selected and to represent the other girls and Roscommon down in Tralee. I love this fabulous county and I won’t let you down,” she said.

Bernie, who will now go on to represent Roscommon at the International Rose of Tralee Festival from August 19th to 23rd, thanked her own sponsors Roscommon Racecourse, MC Fergal D’Arcy and the judging panel, and the Roscommon Rose Centre, including Yvonne Corrigan Donohue and Sharon Taylor.

Meanwhile, Athleague man John Neilan was named Roscommon Escort of the Year on Saturday evening and he too will be making his way to the Dome in Tralee in August.

Strokestown Show to return in September < DAN DOONER

The Strokestown Agricultural Show will make a welcome return on Saturday, September 10th following a two-year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year’s show will take place over one jam-packed day rather than the usual two on the grounds of Strokestown Park House. Established in 1876, and widely regarded as one of the leading commercial cattle shows in the country, the show will feature three All-Ireland classes.

Classes include the All-Ireland Beef Bullock Final which draws exhibitors from all over the country. Sponsored by the Sweeney family from Corigeen, this class has a total prize fund of €6,000.

The Greenvale Animal Foodstuffs-sponsored All-Ireland Beef Heifer class features a prize fund of €2,500 with €1,000 first prize, €600 for runner-up and €300 for third place.

The All-Ireland Breeding Heifer class is also sponsored

by the Sweeney family, while there are two All-Ireland calf classes with a €1,500 prize fund kindly donated by the Hanly family of Hanly’s Eurospar and Hardware, Strokestown.

The leading cattle societies will be hosting classes at the show and there will be multiple Angus classes on the day.

Meanwhile, Show sponsor Jim Callery of Strokestown Park House has once again provided significant backing to the event in the form of a €9,000 prize fund for the Irish Draught Brood Mare Foal at Foot Final. The winner will collect €5,000, second place will win €2,000 and third place will earn €1,000. There will also be prizes for fourth, fifth and sixth.

Mr. Callery has also offered €3,000 in prize money to the top yearling filly (€1,000) and

two-year-old filly (€1,000) and Best Irish Draught (€1,000).

Strokestown Show Chairperson, John O’Beirne, told last Thursday’s launch that Mr. Callery has had a lifelong interest in Irish Draught horses and that his support of the show helps to maintain the breed’s prominence.

Tony and Blaithin Stephenson will sponsor the Connemara Pony section. There will also be the usual sheep classes and two stockperson classes (15 and under and ages 16 to 18).

The very popular Food Fair ‘Flavours from the heart of Ireland’, will feature cooking demonstrations and an appearance by celebrity chef Shane Smith. There will be stands for artisan food producers and entries are still being accepted at info@strokestownshow.ie.

Or rather, something is dancing up a storm at Cruinniú na nÓg – Ireland’s National Day of Free Creativity for Children. At 2.15 pm this Saturday, June 11th, Roscommon Library will play host to the launch

of ‘The Yippee Yaroo & The Barefoot Dance’.

Who is Yippee?

‘The Yippee Yaroo is a very intriguing fellow.

He is hairy and orange, and pink, blue and yellow!

He is the Principal Yippee Yaroo.

And he wants you to be all that is you!

He is a Teacher of The Most High Class.

And he’s a hoot and a fiddle and a blast of gas!’

Arts Centre announce new traditional music concert series This summer, Roscommon Arts Centre is launching a new concert series called ‘The Reel Thing: Roscommon Families’. The series is curated by Roscommon musician John Wynne.

Roscommon is widely recognised as a very strong and vibrant county when it comes to the traditional arts. The county’s musical style and stature is held in high regard and there are many musical families in Roscommon who have been the custodians of that tradition. This new series will feature a number of those families.

The first family to feature are the Guihens. There is a rich and significant tradition of flute and harp playing in the very northern part of County Roscommon, encompassing the Keadue, Ballyfarnon and Arigna areas in particular.

It is from this scenic region and musical tradition that siblings Fiachra and Aoife Guihen hail. They were both naturally drawn to the huge influence and compositions of 17th century harper Turlough O’Carolan, who spent his final years in Ballyfarnon, and equally to the legacy of the legendary Josie McDermott, ‘The Bard Of Coolmeen’.

The Guihens themselves are a very musical family.

Grandfather Tom played melodeon, and the siblings’ uncle Tommy is a well-known and highly regarded flute player. Both Fiachra and Aoife were started off on their musical journey by local music teacher, Padraig Sweeney.

Aoife’s main instrument is the flute while Fiachra plays harp flute and guitar.

Aoife and Fiachra Guihen’s performance takes place at Roscommon Arts Centre on Thursday, June 16th, at 8 pm.

O’Carolan Harp Festival dates confirmed Organisers have confirmed that the 2022 O’Carolan Harp Festival will take place in Keadue from Friday, July 29th to Monday, August 1st.

The festival started in Keadue in 1978 to commemorate famous harper, Turlough O’Carolan, who lived in the area and who is buried in Kilronan Cemetery between Keadue and Ballyfarnon. Often referred to as ‘the blind harper’, O’Carolan was a prolific composer and performer of both songs and instrumental music, the most famous of which is probably Carolan’s Concerto.

The festival includes ceilithe, harp recitals, lectures, music sessions, and a harp competition sponsored every year since it started by local business, Arigna Fuels Limited. The famous door dancing competition will take place on Monday, August 1st.

The festival is preceded by the summer school, which starts on Monday, July 25th and runs for the entire week. There will be tuition in many instruments including the harp, singing and dancing.

Countdown is on for Hospice Sunflower Days!

The final countdown is now underway for ‘Together for Hospice’, the national Hospice movement’s Hospice Sunflower Days on-street collection, which is set to return to towns and villages across the country on Friday, June 10th and Saturday, June 11th.

Volunteers nationwide will be selling sunflower merchandise to raise vital funds for local hospice and spe-

cialist palliative homecare services. Members of the public who wish to support ther local Hospice by donating online can do so by sponsoring a virtual sunflower in memory of a loved one at www.togetherforhospice.ie/ sunflowerdays.

Hospice care and homecare is all about providing help and support to those living with a lifelimiting illness and their

families. Hospice care is provided either in specialist units in the hospice or in the person’s own home with specialist palliative trained homecare nurses.

With hospices nationwide needing to raise approximately €20 million each year to continue to provide their person-centred loving care to patients and their families, Hospice Sunflower Days aims to raise as much

funding as possible for hospice and specialist palliative homecare services across Ireland, with all funds raised locally staying locally.

Speaking ahead of the return of the on-street collection, Martina Jennings, CEO, Mayo-Roscommon Hospice Foundation said: “We are thrilled to be able to return to our traditional on-street collection this year as part of our fundraising campaign and

we are calling on members of the public throughout the country to donate what they can to help support their local hospice or homecare service”.

Now that Sheds are making every effort to reconnect, Ballaghaderreen Men’s Shed are hosting a series of workshops during National Men’s Health week 2022 (June 13th-19th).

The past two years have been quite destructive for some men, who are finding a clear path forward difficult to navigate.

All types of questions are coming to the surface in terms of availability of services in our health system, and the picture of life itself has left some men wanting to take back control of their personal circumstances and their wellbeing.

Certainly, getting out and about and embracing all the life has to offer is important. Clarity around who does what and how one’s emotional state is looked after is a fundamental need.

With this in mind, Ballaghaderreen are providing a series of workshops to the public in their Shed, which is located behind Solan’s Bar off the square at F45DC80. Numbers are limited so get there fifteen minutes before the time, as latecomers will not get access. All workshops are a duration of one hour and admission is free.

The first workshop, to be held at 7.30 pm on Monday June 13th, will be hosted by solicitor Kenneth McDonnell and will discuss the ‘Importance of Planning and Making your Will’. The second workshop takes place at 4 pm on Tuesday June 14th, where Dr Martin Garvey will discuss prostate cancer/mental health awareness.

On Wednesday June 15th at 7.30 pm, Grainne Murphy of Murphy’s Total Health will host a workshop on ‘How your local pharmacy looks after the wellbeing of the family’. Thursday June 16th will be an open day at the Shed from 10.30 am to 3 pm, so all are welcome to call in and chat to any member. Finally, at 7.30 pm on Friday June 17th, Bernadette Finneran of the HSE will discuss ‘The Importance of looking after your skin and the signs to look for around skin cancers’.

New counselling service in county to help on harmful gambling A new support service to assist people dealing with harmful gambling is now available at Boyle Family Resource Centre, Roscommon.

The ‘National Problem Gambling Support Service’ was officially launched last week by Gambling Awareness Trust. The service is a collaboration between Gambling Awareness Trust and the Family Resource Centre National Forum (FRCNF), which will see twenty Family Resource Centres (FRCs) across the country provide professional and confidential counselling services to those experiencing harmful gambling and their families.

Speaking about the service, Pam Bergin (Executive Director of Gambling Awareness Trust) said: “I would strongly encourage anyone in Roscommon who is experiencing harmful gambling to contact their local FRC. “Harmful gambling can have serious consequences for people’s mental health, their employment and relation-

ships. International research reports that for every single person identified with a ‘gambling disorder’, up to six other people are impacted significantly. Given the estimated prevalence of 55,000 problem gamblers in Ireland this presents a significant number of individuals affected in Irish society and highlights the need for increased services and supports in this area.

“The National Problem Gambling Support Service will provide vital community-based support to help those experiencing harmful gambling and their affected others.

Through the FRCs, Gambling Awareness Trust wants to end the stigma attached to problem gambling by sending a strong message to those affected that professional and confidential support is available”.

ICMSA: Inflationary measure for public construction projects but not for TAMS? Deputy President of ICMSA, Denis Drennan, claims farmers have been left bemused by the ‘Inflation Cooperation Framework’ announced by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform last month.

In the announcement, Minister Michael McGrath outlined a mechanism by which the State recognised the inflationary pressures currently being experienced throughout construction

and most specifically with regard to public works contracts.

Mr Drennan noted that as a result of this new measure the State undertook to bear up to 70 per cent of additional inflationary related costs. He said that the question occurring to farmers generally and ICMSA specifically is why the State was so unwilling to recognise precisely the same inflationary measures in the area of farm grants.

Mr. Drennan accused the Government of leaving TAMS applicants “swinging in the wind” and said that reference costs for the grant “should be increased immediately to reflect the actual costs being faced by farmers”.

EU Commissioner for Agriculture says ‘Farm to Fork’ must be re-visited The EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Janusz Wojciechowski said the EU Farm to Fork policy will have to be re-visited in light of food security concerns.

Mr. Wojciechowski was addressing the IFA National Council in the Irish Farm Centre, a meeting which was attended by Roscommon IFA Chairman, Pat Leonard.

Mr. Leonard said the Commissioner acknowledged the need for EU policy including Farm to Fork to be adjusted to respond to the current food security crisis.

“He acknowledged that the huge increase in input costs was putting huge pressure on farmers and food production. As Agriculture Commissioner he committed to seek more support for the sector at Commission level,” Mr. Leonard said.

IFA calls for immediate action over rising costs

The rising costs of farming, a potential fodder shortage later this year, and fears over food security were among the topics up for discussion at a public meeting held by the IFA at Roscommon Mart on Tuesday evening.

Addressing those in attendance, Roscommon IFA Chairman Pat Leonard said the aim of the meeting was to highlight the difficulties faced by the agricultural sector to local public representatives.

Farm Business Chair Rosemary McDonagh called on the Department of Agriculture to provide new funding and highlighted ongoing confusion and delays around the sileage growing scheme and EU funding.

“This crisis is out of farmers’ control but rising costs are having a massive impact on the business of farming,” she said.

“We need new money and funds into the pockets of farmers to alleviate the fuel, fertiliser and feed costs”.

Cashflow issues exacerbated by farmers being required to pay up front

for fertiliser and also the exit of Ulster Bank from the Irish market were also raised.

Teagasc Dry Stock advisor James Kelly said rising costs are having an impact across the board with some suckler farmers faced with cost increases of up to €200 per head. He said Teagasc has advised farmers to cut sileage early as quality may prove critical towards the end of the year.

Connacht IFA Chair Pat Murphy highlighted the association’s six-point plan which called for a reduction in VAT charged by contractors, an increase in ANC payments, lower interest loans, a review of the fertiliser industry, a freeing up of GLAS restrictions, and incentivisation of cash crops.

A number of local public representatives also addressed the meeting with many admitting they were in no doubt as to the seriousness of the situation facing farmers.

Deputy Naughten also called for Carbon Tax to be removed from fuel prices.

Senator Eugene Murphy said details of the fodder scheme would be released in coming days and applicants would receive payment by year end.

Senator Aisling Dolan said farmers faced “massive challenges” and that

while this was very much a global crisis concerns raised at the meeting would be brought back to Government.

Cllr. Laurence Fallon told the meeting that “it was up to Government to use fire brigade action to keep agriculture afloat”.

“It will be with great regret that we will see thousands and thousands fewer farmers in the years to come”.

Cllr. Emer Kelly said farming had been constantly targeted and that the Government was often “two steps behind” the rest of the world when it came to taking action.

“Young people want to engage in farming but the

rising costs are discouraging this. It’s time to get fairer prices just like the rest of the EU,” she said.

Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice warned that “we can’t afford to lose our farmers” but that “predatory selling” by big retailers was taking its toll. He also called for a relaxation of solar panel restrictions on farm buildings.

Cllr. John Naughten said the current situation was an “unprecedented crisis” and that unless swift action is taken a significant part of the rural economy would be wiped out.

Cllr. Kathleen Shanagher also expressed her support for farmers gathered at the mart on Tuesday.

Castlerea MART WATCH Good numbers of stock presented for sale this week as we enter the first week of June.

The bullock ring witnessed increased numbers on offer with forward lots making up to €2,350.

The heifer ring, with similar numbers on offer, saw prices peak at €2,300 with excellent demand on offer and good clearance taking place.

The dry cow trade remains strong also with lots making up to €2,300 while the cows with calves at foot made up to €2,860 for a Simmental cow and her Limousin heifer calf at foot. Springers made up to €1,810.

The calf trade witnessed excellent demand with lots making from €75 to €550. The weanling rings witnessed bulls peak at €3.65 a kilo while the weanling heifers peaked at €1,350 for 325kgs Limousin heifer or €4.15 a kilo.

Fleming’s SuperValu celebrate 50 years in business On Thursday, May 26th 1972, Liam Fleming and his wife Lilian opened the doors to Fleming’s VG on Main Street, Roscommon. On Thursday, May 26th 2022, Liam’s son Shane and his wife Orla acknowledged that day in 1972, fifty years to the day, by having a celebration for both staff and customers in store.

To mark the occasion, a wall to ceiling montage of memories was displayed, depicting the many staff members employed over the years. A beautiful cake, food tastings, and treats were available to sample throughout the afternoon.

Among the guests were Declan and Mary Molloy of Molloy’s Bakery and Fine Food Emporium, and John

Campbell of Champion Milk, two businesses that have supplied what was then VG and is now Fleming’s SuperValu throughout the Flemings’ fifty years. Two local family-owned businesses that have also stood the test of time in Roscommon town.

As a thank you to customers, the Flemings sold a number of products at 1972 prices on the day! Shane, who now runs the business with his wife Orla, also launched a promotion where special scratch cards allowed customers a chance to win their shopping for half price on the day. There were plenty of celebrations among lucky customers who won this nice prize and the promotion continues over the next few weeks when you spend €50 or more.

NBI’s RISE Community Fund opens to Roscommon townlands

Irish Water has said that works set to begin in Elphin later this month will result in better water quality for “generations of local people”.

The body has confirmed that it will begin replacing more 1km of old cast iron pipes in the town later in the next few weeks.

Declan Cawley (Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead with Irish Water) said water quality in the town has been a constant challenge for businesses and residents.

“Over time, cast iron pipes can become encrusted and affect water quality and pressure. New pipework, installed as part of these works, will significantly improve water quality,” he said.

The essential works, which will take place along the Main Street, Chapel Street and Druid Lane, will also reduce the number of outages and save treated drinking water from being lost into the ground.

“We are aware that works of this nature can cause some disruption.

We would like to assure the public that, together with Roscommon County Council and our contractor Farrans Construction, We are working to minimise any inconvenience over the course of the works,” Mr. Cawley concluded.

Rossies face Clare in crunch qualifier

All-Ireland SFC qualifiers (round two): Roscommon v Clare on Saturday in Croke Park at 3.45 pm < SEAMUS DUKE

Following the disappointment of losing the Connacht final to Galway, hopes will be high in the Roscommon camp that Anthony Cunningham’s men can return to winning ways when they meet Clare in round two of the qualifiers at Croke Park this Saturday.

Supporters will not need to be reminded that the Banner County defeated Roscommon in the qualifiers in 2016 in Salthill while there has never been much between the sides in any subsequent NFL fixtures.

The sides met as recently as February in a Division Two match at Dr. Hyde Park when they played out a draw. Clare come into this qualifier on the back of an excellent 1-11 to 1-9 win against Meath last weekend.

From a Roscommon point of view, the three-point margin in the Connacht final disguised what was a poor performance. The Rossies are capable of far better than what they showed in Pearse Stadium that day and now have an opportunity to set the record straight.

The starting fifteen will be named later this week but Eoin McCormack is surely one player who has made a strong case for a starting berth while Richard Hughes must also be in the shake up for a place in the half back line. Keith Doyle is another player who has done his chances of a start no harm in recent weeks while the calls for Diarmuid Murtagh to get a starting place in the attack are growing with every game.

Anthony Cunningham was understandably cautious following the draw on Monday morning.

“Clare are a very difficult side to beat and Roscommon people will remember well the last time the teams met in the championship so we will be taking this match very seriously indeed,” he said.

“The lads have applied themselves well since the Galway match. A number of our lads did not play up to scratch in the Connacht final, they know that and they are determined to put that right against Clare.

“Clare have a well recognised system and they are a very well managed and coached team. They set up defensively and we will have to try to break them down.

The league game we played earlier was played on a very bad day but it was very tight and ended in a draw.

Colm Collins has done a great job with Clare and they have some very good players.

“We watched their match against Meath and they play to a system and are very tenacious so we will prepare accordingly but it’s a challenge that we are looking forward to”.

There is a big carrot for the winners on Saturday and that should spur on the players according to the Roscommon boss.

“We want to get to the quarter-finals and another appearance in Croke Park. That was our aim all along and we are one match away from that. We will be hoping for a much improved performance (from the Galway match) and we want to see our players doing them-

selves justice on Saturday,” he concluded.

Clare will be very difficult to break down and their experienced manager Colm Collins has worked out a way to maximise their potential and they have some excellent performers.

Croke Park should suit Roscommon’s strong running game but they must revert to the style that saw them unbeaten this year until the Connacht final. A more direct approach to get the ball quickly into the attack has been a proven formula so far this year and we need to see a return to that on Saturday.

Rossies take on Armagh The Roscommon junior camogie team will be hoping to remain on track for a top two spot in their Glen Dimplex AllIreland Premier Junior Camogie Championship group when they take on Armagh away from home this Saturday at 5 pm.

The Orchard County have so far dominated Group One with huge wins over Limerick and Antrim while Roscommon suffered defeat to Antrim in round one before bouncing back in impressive fashion against Limerick in round two.

While Roscommon suffered an unsettled start to the year, things seem to have improved under new manager Liam Gordon, and he will be hoping for another encouraging performance this weekend.

The Boyle Celtic juggernaut rumbled on last weekend as the Premier Division champions beat Castlerea Celtic 3-0 in their Premier Division Cup semi-final clash to set up a showdown with either St. John’s Athletic or Ballinasloe Town.

Because of the Bank Holiday weekend, a number of teams were not in action and our boys’ U-18, U-16 and girls’ U-16 teams are taking a break from competitive games during the exam season.

Our older U-14 team lost out away from home to high-flying Skyvalley Rovers.

Town III played at home to Moylough and emerged comfortable winners on a pleasant evening for football in Lisnamult. Phellipe Carvalho and Lewis Smyth netted braces and goals from Dara Kelleher, Joao Vitor Santes and Niall Timon saw Town cruise to the three points.

The U-12 girls’ team reached the Shield quarter-finals. They lost out at home to Kilkerrin United with Emer Timon scoring the goal. In the only U-12 boys’ game, Sam Martin scored twice but Town II lost out to Ballinagare. Our boys’ U-7 teams played Glen Celtic on Saturday morning.

Playing the game, enjoying the game and learning from the game is what it’s all about.

Horses for Courses This weekend’s action Racing this weekend starts this evening (Thursday) on the flat at Leopardstown, off at 5.15 pm, featuring the Group 3 Ballycorus Stakes. There are two meetings tomorrow, over the jumps at Powerstown Park in Clonmel, away at 5 pm and on the flat at Fairyhouse from 4.45 pm and featuring the €150,000 Emerald Mile Handicap and the Group 3 Gallinule Stakes.

Racing starts in Limerick on the flat at 2.05 pm on Saturday and over the sticks at Downpatrick from 1.45 pm.

On Sunday, Downpatrick race again with another NH card away at 1.45 pm and there is a flat meeting at Gowran Park off at 1.55 pm. Racing returns to the midlands on Monday in Kilbeggan at 5.30 pm featuring the Paul and Carmel Fay Memorial Hurdle, and Tuesday at Lenabane, featuring the Tote Connaught National Handicap Chase, provisionally away at 4.35 pm.

ITV covers three races from York, two from York and one from Chester on Saturday.

From Tuesday next, the annual Royal Ascot meeting takes place, running until Saturday with TV coverage all five days.

Epsom Review

On Friday history was made in the Oaks when Aidan O’Brien trained his 41st English Classic winner as Tuesday and Ryan Moore beat the unlucky favourite Emily Upjohn ridden by Frankie Dettori, by a short head with Naswha third, ridden by Hollie Doyle attempting to become the first lady to ride a classic winner.

Tuesday is O’Brien’s 10th Epsom Oaks winner. People are talking about a rematch, maybe at the Curragh, but I can’t see the syndicate willing to take the runner-up on again.

Earlier, the Group 1 Coronation Cup was won by the Eoin Burrows trained Hukum with Pyledriver second and the Aidan O’Brien trained High Definition third. The winner has a fractured hind leg which required screws and is out for at least the rest of the season.

Swings and roundabouts.

On Saturday, the Derby was easily won by the Michael Stoutetrained favourite Desert Crown who was given a lovely ride by Richard Kingscote, having only his second ride in the race. The 150/1 outsider Hoo Ya Mal second and Westover third. Changingoftheguard was the best of Aidan O’Brien’s in fifth. The winning distances were 2½l and a head.

The Prix du Jockey Club in Chantilly on Sunday stayed at home with Cristophe Soumillon riding Jean-Claude Roguet’s Vadeni to victory over El Bodegan with Modern Games third for Charlie Appleby and rider William Buick. Aidan O’Brien’s Ivy League, Ryan Moore, and The Acropolis, Frankie Dettori, finished 12th and 14th respectively.

Slevin had a quick double in the next, riding 8/1 shot Darkened to victory for Denis Hogan.

In the New Midland Hospice Beginners Chase, of the six that went to post only three finished with Gordon Elliott’s Call Me Lyreen, the easiest winner of the day, beating Custer’s Mistake by 44l. The favourite, Watch House Cross, was pulled up by Rachael Blackmore.

In the feature race, the Entegro Handicap Chase, nine went to post and the locally trained Jack Hackett gave Mark McDonagh a double, winning for Ciaran Murphy at 3/1 favourite. Punters made it three from seven in the bumper with the Willie Mullins’ trained Uncle Phil under Jody Townend winning easily from Dawn Around and Guadriole by 14l and 16l. Racing returns on Monday next.

The card opens with an amateur maiden hurdle over 2m followed by an Opportunity Handicap Hurdle over 3m. Next up is the featured Paul and Carmel Fay Memorial Handicap Hurdle over 2m. The late Paul and Carmel were well known supporters of racing in the west and rarely missed a meeting in Kilbeggan or Roscommon.

A mares’ condition race over 2m 2f is next on the cards. Then the Belvedere House and Gardens Beginners Chase is the first of the races over the major obstacles followed by the Galway Plate Trial Handicap Chase over 2m 3f and finishing with a bumper for amateur and 7lb claiming professional jockeys.

The Men play Tuam this Friday in the All-Ireland Fourball, the finals of which will take place in Athlone in September.

John Barry (45 points) won the 18-hole Stableford to kick off Open Week recently. Thomas O’Connor took gross with 37 while Maeve Holmes was best of the Ladies with 39.

The Sheffield Jewellers’ competition was won by Catherine Fitzgerald with 40 points. Maeve Holmes continued her good form to finish runner-up, also with 40 points.

Michael O’Leary was in flying form as he won the Mellotte O’Carroll Solicitors’ competition with 40 points with Anne Evans best of the Ladies on 37 points.

Eamon Hardiman was best of the Gents in the Sidero competition with 34 points while Brid Kenny topped the Ladies’ leaderboard with 37.

Boyle Open Week returns to Boyle from Monday, July 4th to 8th with competitions for Ladies and Gents each day. The big event will take place on Friday, 8th with a 9-hole Scramble, barbeque and music from Adam Daly.

Congratulations to Mark Whelan who won the Bart Moran Cup with 60 nett, eight shots clear of Michael McHale in second place.

Racing News On Sunday, a very successful raiding party went to Scotland where Gordon Elliott trained a double in the first two races at Perth with Enki Falacke, 4/7, and Ash Tree Meadow, 6/4, both horses were favourite.

In the bumper, Stuart Crawford’s I Love My Baie was a winning favourite under Daryl Jacob making it three for the Irish.

In nearby Musselborough, Joey Sheridan rode the Tipperary trained Only Spoofing, the 2/1 favourite, for Kevin Coleman to victory in the 6f Apprentice Handicap.

Gordon Elliott and Eddie O’Leary paid tribute to Cheltenham Festival winning amateur Lisa O’Neill, who has hung up her boots after riding The Friday Man to victory at Tramore on Friday for Elliott. With a combined total of 101 winners under rules and in pointto-points, O’Neill is one of the most prolific female Irish amateurs in history.

Thriller in Kiltoom!

Rossies edge Lilywhites to reach quarter-finals TG4 Ladies Football All-Ireland Intermediate Championship Round 1 Roscommon 4-10 Kildare 2-14 < SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon are through to the All-Ireland Intermediate quarterfinals following this thrilling two-point win against Kildare in a superbly entertaining contest played at Kiltoom on Sunday last.

There has been a lot of comment in the national media in recent weeks about negative football but there wasn’t an ounce of negativity to be seen in this match as the two teams drove at each other from the first minute.

At the end of the day, Roscommon’s superior firepower proved the difference between the sides and it was noticeable that Ollie Lennon’s team played a much more direct brand of football than we saw against Leitrim in the recent Connacht championship.

Played on a dry overcast day, and on the splendid Kiltoom pitch, Roscommon led by 0-3 to no score after six minutes with Jenny Shine kicking two points and the other coming from the boot of newly crowned world boxing champion Lisa O’Rourke, who had a fine game in the middle of the field.

But Kildare got into the game

in the 8th minute when the outstanding Grace Clifford powered through to score a great goal for the Lilywhites. Then, after Niamh Feeney scored a fine point for Roscommon, Kildare grabbed a second goal in the 11th minute when Aoife Rattigan crashed the ball into the roof of the net from 15 metres.

Both sides attacked with pace, and Roscommon had two goals on the board by the 17th minute.

Fiona Tully was first on the mark after a great pass from Natalie McHugh on the 13th minute and four minutes later, Jenny Shine raised a green flag after a superb pass from Aisling Hanly.

With the sides level at 2-5 apiece, Roscommon struck for goal number three in the 25th minute.

Aisling McAuliffe played a brilliant pass in to Aisling Hanly and her pass was fisted to the Kildare net by Fiona Tully which gave Roscommon a 3-6 to 2-6 lead at half-time.

With Aoife Rattigan always a danger, Kildare drew level at 2-11 to 3-8 after 47 minutes.

Points from Niamh Feeney and Fiona Tully edged Roscommon ahead again, but Kildare refused to lie down as Rattigan and Ciara Wheeler pointed to level the scores again with two minutes to go.

Roscommon struck the crucial score with just one minute of normal time remaining. Jenny Shine turned provider and sub Rosie Lennon applied the finish to finally break the Kildare resist-

ance. Kildare sub Ellen Dowling narrowed the gap in injury-time with a point and Grace Clifford had a final chance in the 64th minute but her effort flew wide of the post and Roscommon survived to win in dramatic fashion.

Ollie Lennon and his selectors will be looking to shore up the defence for the tougher challenges ahead but he can be well pleased with his charges after this vital win.

“It turned out to be a bit of a shootout but we expected that.

Kildare came here with their season on the line and for us we knew that if we won we were into a quarter-final. We have it all to play for next week when we play Longford to see who tops the group,” Lennon said at full-time.

“We were trying something new against Leitrim (in the Connacht final) and while it worked for 20 minutes. We played a good few challenge games since and we tried a change of style again today and we kicked the ball in a good bit more and were more direct. We have the forwards in there to do damage and that’s what happened”.

The Roscommon manager acknowledged the threat posed by the visitors: “We said it at half-time that they were going to try an isolate their dangerous forwards in the second half. We did a good job but they still had a number of chances and one at the end could have gone into the net but it was our day today thankfully,” he concluded.
