There were 500 confirmed Covid-19 cases in County Roscommon as of midnight on Monday following yesterday’s (Wednesday) news that an additional six cases had been added to the county’s total from Tuesday’s national figure of 432.

The news follows confirmation of cases in three secondary schools and a primary school in Roscommon last weekend.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Roscommon Town and District Vintners’ Branch, Larry Brennan, says Wednesday’s move to Level 3 restrictions is unfair on pubs.

Speaking to the Roscommon People, Mr. Brennan said: “It’s discriminatory against pubs because it’s Level 3 for every other business but Level 5 for pubs.

“Pubs have again been victimised. We all know that public health is the priority and that numbers are going up but there is no evidence that pubs that complied with the guidelines contributed to the current spike”. For more, see pages 3 & 13.

Please explain the new Government Stay and Spend Incentive to me. Do I have to go on a “staycation” to avail of this?

The Government has introduced a new scheme to encourage people to spend money on accommodation and food in Ireland. The scheme allows you to claim some tax back on accommodation, food and non-alcoholic drink (qualifying expenditure) bought between 1st October 2020 and 30th April 2021.

In order to qualify you must spend a minimum of €25 in a single transaction on qualifying expenditure and submit the receipt to Revenue.

A single person may submit receipts up to a total of €625 to Revenue or a jointly assessed couple may submit receipts up to €1,250.

Revenue will then in turn provide an income tax credit of up to €125 for a single person, or up to €250 for a jointly assessed married couple.

You do not need to go on a ‘staycation’ to avail of the scheme. You may can claim for expenses you paid in your local town or village if they meet the definition of qualifying expenditure i.e. minimum spend of €25 per transaction on food, non-alcoholic drink and accommodation.

Food and drinks may be served in a café, restaurant, hotel or pub. However, takeaway food and alcoholic drinks do not qualify.

In order to avail of the tax relief available, you must have receipts to prove your claim. Relief may be claimed electronically via Revenue. ie website. The Stay and Spend tax credit will reduce the amount of income tax you have to pay – up to €125 for a single person and up to €250 for a jointly-assessed married couple.

Reveue.ie website lists those service providers participating in the scheme. If a business wishes to register for the scheme, they may do so using Revenue’s ROS service.

NewsPeople €70,000 in Covid support funding Chairperson of the Dáil Committee on Community & Rural Affairs, Denis Naughten TD, has confirmed the allocation of €70,000 to support three local voluntary organisations to cope with the impact of Covid-19.

The three services are: Elphin Social Services (which is to receive €25,303), Ballinasloe Social Services (which is to receive €25,374 to

support its work with older people, especially those living on their own), and the Melting Pot in Roscommon Town (which is to receive €19,395 to support services throughout the community).

Funding of €93,449 is also being provided to Irish Rural Link, based in Athlone, to assist in the delivery of services throughout the region.

There were 500 confirmed Covid-19 cases in County Roscommon as of midnight on Monday following yesterday’s (Wednesday) news that an additional six cases had been added to the county’s total from Tuesday’s national figure of 432.

The news follows confirmation of cases in three secondary schools and a primary school in Roscommon last weekend.

There were also confirmed cases among staff at Smith’s SuperValu in Monksland, as a result of which all staff were tested and close contacts are self-isolating.

Nationally, a further 611 cases of Covid-19 were announced yesterday (Wednesday) and sadly there were five further deaths.

This comes after the entire country was moved to Level 3 restrictions at midnight on Tuesday.

218 of yesterday’s cases were in Dublin while there were 63 in Cork, 60 in Donegal, 35 in Galway, 31 in Kildare and 204 across 21 other counties. No figures for Roscommon were available at the time of going to print.

The Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Tony Holohan, who returned to his role earlier this week, said the situation had deteriorated since the last NPHET meeting last Sunday (October 4th).

Speaking at yesterday’s press conference, Dr. Holohan said: “Covid-19 is spreading in our community in a very worrying manner.

We have to break these chains of transmission.

“I have to get across the seriousness of the situation we are in. We are now beginning to see exponential growth in case numbers.

Unless we individually and

collectively take the message that we are giving seriously, it will become inevitable.

“Go back to the basics of hand washing and face masks, of avoiding crowded places. We are trying to

US dollar Covid pay – deadline nearing!

Councillor Anthony Waldron says there’s good news for people who worked in the US or are US residents in Ireland.

Irish people who worked in the US and have a Social Security number or US residents in Ireland, who are registered with the US Internal Revenue Service, (including non-filers) can now avail of a special Covid payment grant announced by the US government. The value of the grant is 1,200.00 US dollars.

Cllr. Waldron explains: “This Covid Payment scheme is available to anyone with a Social Security Number, even if it is many years since they worked or paid taxes in the United States. Application for the Covid Payment can be made online by visiting IRS.gov/coronavirus or call 00-1-800919-9835”.

The closing date for applications is October 15th, 2020.

NOTICE OF PASSING OF RESOLUTION TO VARY BASIC RATE OF LOCAL PROPERTY TAX The Finance (Local Property Tax) Act 2012 (as amended), makes specific provision that Elected Members of a local authority may pass a formal resolution to vary the basic rate of the Local Property Tax for their administrative area by a percentage known as the Local Adjustment Factor.

Article 10 of the Local Property Tax (Local Adjustment Factor) Regulations 2014 requires a local authority that has decided to vary the basic rate of the local property tax within its administrative area to give public notice of that decision.

Notice is hereby given that at the meeting of Roscommon County Council held on 28th of September 2020 a formal resolution was passed to the effect that the basic rate of local property tax should stand varied upwards by 15 per cent for the year 2021 with regard to relevant residential properties situated in the administrative area of Roscommon County Council. The variation in the Local Property Tax rate applies for a period of one year from the next local property tax liability date.

Tributes following tragic passing of Sr Bernard Tributes are being paid to the woman who died in a road traffic accident in Athlone town on Monday (October 5th). The woman was named locally as Sr. Bernard Lynch (93), who was originally from Arigna in Co. Roscommon.

Sr. Lynch had spent 50 years in Athlone, where she taught as well as serving as principal in a local national school for twenty years. She remained a very active member of the Athlone community following her retirement.

The Mayor of Athlone, Cllr. Aengus O’Rourke, said Sr. Bernard had the “warmest of hearts and the purest and most generous soul” and that he’d always remember her compassion in helping people. Tributes have

also been paid to Sr. Bernard on social media following the accident. A post on the St. Peter’s and Paul’s Parish Facebook page read: ‘A veil of sadness hangs over Athlone. Sr. Bernard Lynch was suddenly called home to be with the God she loved and devoted her life to.

‘Sr. Bernard has touched the lives of many families over her 50 plus years in Athlone and will be very fondly missed by all’.

St. Peter’s Football Club also paid tribute on its Facebook page: ‘All of us involved in St. Peter’s are deeply shocked and saddened at the untimely passing of Sr. Bernard. Sr. Bernard has spent over five decades involved in the parish and also St. Peter’s and Paul’s Church’.

Íarnróid Éireann apologises over shared taxi < DAN DOONER

Íarnróid Éireann has apologised to four passengers for a lack of social distancing provided during a taxi transfer from Roscommon train station last Sunday.

A signal failure led to a delay of over an hour and a half on the Dublin to Westport route service which led to the ten passengers on board being of-

fered road transfers.

Four of the ten passengers accepted the offer of a transfer but were then placed in just one taxi for their onward journey. Íarnróid Éireann offered an apology to the four customers in a statement to the Roscommon People earlier this week: ‘There was a signal fault at a level crossing at Roscommon on Sunday as a result of that there was a significant delay to

a Westport Bound service.

‘The customers onboard (there were ten in total) were given the option to continue their journey via taxi. Four customers opted to take the taxi. They were not socially distanced and this should not have happened.

‘We apologise to those customers and have protocols in place now to ensure that this does not happen again’.

All week…

There we all were, hunkered down in our communal plight, digesting the latest restrictions which the political establishment had sorrowfully imposed upon the people. At least we were all in it together…

It was August 19, and the nation was resigned to more hardship. Meanwhile, on the golf course in Galway, Supreme Court Judge Seamus Woulfe, perturbed by the weather, decided to finish his round after just nine holes. I am glad that he arranged to meet playing partner Lorraine Higgins – a former Labour Party Senator, now a barrister – for a drink in The Station House Hotel, prior to the meal. I am grateful he did, because it made it possible for me to read the following sentence in last weekend’s Sunday Times: “He (Woulfe) walked into the dining suite with Higgins and the Moroccan ambassador, and had not noticed a table plan in the hall”.

There’s something about that sentence – it reads like a line from a James Bond script – which sums up how out of touch and arrogant some of those involved in Golfgate are!

“He walked into the dining suite with Higgins and the Moroccan ambassador…”

It’s been a revealing weekend for those of us who still have any appetite left for Golfgate. I actually don’t think Judge Woulfe’s presence at the Oireachtas Golf Society event – ill-judged as it was – is in itself a resigning matter. I can see why Chief Justice Susan Denham (who conducted a review) concluded that it would have been “unjust and disproportionate” for Judge Woulfe to resign.

However, some of the responses given by Seamus Woulfe to Denham now cast serious doubt on whether or not he is actually befitting of his status as a Supreme Court Judge.

Transcripts from the exchanges between the two reveal a total absence of humility (and dubious judgement) on Woulfe’s part.

He takes no responsibility for what happened. He is critical of the media, and of Government; even allowing for the fact that his comments were made directly to Chief Justice Denham, it rankles that a judge would cross that line, i.e. criticising elected public representatives. Separation of powers?

His responses were arrogant, self-pitying, lacking in an appreciation of why the public was so angry. On balance, I don’t think this sorry affair should cost him his job, but I do think he has shown poor judgement, and a total lack of humility, and would be well served to issue a new statement and a suitably humble apology.

Meanwhile…anyone know how the Moroccan ambassador played on the day?

proach. It was fairly obvious, I think, that the Government would reject the proposal, but it is still the case that thousands of people went to bed on Sunday night deeply worried, maybe even traumatised, by the prospect of a full lockdown being imposed again.

On Monday, the Government confirmed that every county would move to Level 3 status with effect from midnight on Tuesday night. That’s a big setback for local pubs, restaurants and hotels – amongst other businesses – and of course it’s also inconvenient for the wider public.

I really feel for the publicans and restaurants owners who have had to close their doors so suddenly again. With Covid cases rising however, it is clear that the Government had to move to Level 3 at least. Hopefully if we all adhere to the guidelines with renewed discipline we can flatten the curve (again) and avoid even more grim restrictions being imposed in the coming weeks.

It’s been great fun these last couple of weeks, well, unless your name is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The football is exciting and the goals are flying in. A memorable weekend began with a great game between Leeds United and Manchester City. As a Leeds fan – and even though Marcelo Bielsa’s team have returned to the Premier League in style – I feared City would halt our gallop. The first 20 minutes or so were worrying, Pep’s men zipping the ball around with menace, Raheem Sterling threatening mayhem from the wing.

Leeds settled however, and once they did, they more than matched their illustrious opponents. Remarkably, Leeds had the greater share of possession. A superb match ended 1-1.

Sunday was bizarre. I don’t like giving out about players, but some of the Manchester United defending (against Spurs) was not just pitiful, it was an insult to the club’s proud history. Harry Maguire was pretty woeful, and Paul Pogba was a disgrace.

World Mental Health Day in Roscommon World Mental Health day is Sunday, October the 10th. This year’s theme is Mental Health for All – Greater Investment – Greater Access. Everyone, everywhere.

Covid-19 has left many people struggling with all the changes the pandemic has brought with it. Fear, uncertainty and stress about our current situation as well as the future is a very normal response.

World Mental Health Day encourages everyone to make not only their physical health but also their mental and emotional health a priority now more than ever.

The Roscommon Suicide Bereavement Liaison Service understands that with all the changes and restrictions to services, many have been left confused as to what supports are available. In accordance with this year’s theme, we would like to provide readers with signposts on services available to you. These services can be accessed through a range of means, depending on your current needs.

Mental health needs to be supported at all levels, not only when someone is in crisis. These services range from free to low cost, and while there are restrictions to ensure everyone’s safety, they can be accessed by those who have a need and fit the services criteria.

The Roscommon Suicide Bereavement Liaison Service is a free service dedicated to supporting individuals, families and communities bereaved by suicide. The service is hosted by Vita House in Roscommon town and Boyle Family Resource Centre in Boyle.

We have a wide range of supports available including information packs, one to one support in our Boyle and Roscommon offices, virtual and phone support. Promoting positive mental health Roscommon Children and Young Person’s Services Committee (CYPSC) and the Healthy Ireland Fund, supported by the Department of Health and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs, are working together with local partners (including Roscommon County Childcare Committee, the Family Resource Centres and Roscommon Sports Partnership) to launch a six-month campaign in County Roscommon to promote positive mental and physical health messages for young children and their parents.

The campaign will see a new message promoted each month that will inform parents about the connection between good mental health and well-being, and physical activ-

ity, sleep and rest, connecting to others and healthy eating. The campaign will also focus on providing children with opportunities to talk about their feelings/emotions, and highlight the implications that exposure to substance misuse can have on children’s health and well-being.

For October, this campaign will focus on the importance that physical activity plays in the development and maintenance of positive mental health for our young children.

Over 200 air ambulance trips since May The air ambulance service, which is based at Custume Barracks in Athlone, and which came about on foot of the highly controversial closure of Roscommon A&E Department, has had a busy summer period.

Over the three-month period of May, June and July, the air ambulance performed 188 missions. There were a further 60 during August. In all, the air ambulance has performed over 420 missions from January until the end of August this year (January: 31, February: 49, March: 44, April: 55, May: 61, June: 71, July: 56 and August: 60).

The figures were obtained from the HSE by Independent TD Denis Naughten, who said that the frequency of callouts “clearly highlights the importance of this service to communities throughout the region”.

The HSE also confirmed that there had been no interruption to service as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Concern over closure of bus routes Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has said that the decision by Bus Éireann to close down several of its inter-city routes, including Dublin to Galway, is hugely regrettable and will negatively impact older people in particular in parts of South Roscommon. Other routes to be affected are Dublin to Cork and Limerick.

“I understand that the measure is being taken by Bus Éireann in response to challenges posed by Covid-19, but I believe it is a hugely regrettable step, which will come as a massive blow to workers and passengers. Thankfully, the Dublin to Westport line is still intact, but it is very disappointing to see the Dublin to Galway route being axed.

“This will negatively affect older people living in isolated areas, particularly in parts of South Roscommon where the bus route was a life link to perhaps get to a larger shopping town, or meet friends or relations, and many of these older people used their free travel pass on this route.

“We have to examine the societal impact of these kinds of decisions, and not just base them solely on economic reasons,” said Senator Murphy.

Lough Funshinagh: IFA calls on politicians to act now A delegation of IFA representatives recently visited Lough Funshinagh in Co. Roscommon where they met with local farmers concerned with rising water levels at the lake.

The IFA Regional Executive, John O’Hanlon, Connacht Chairman Pat Murphy and Roscommon Chairman Jim O’Connor were given a tour by local landowners who claim the water levels are rising at a rate of four feet per year.

Mr. O’Hanlon said: “Under the EUs Habitat Directive, Lough Funshinagh is classed as a Special Area of Conservation, (SAC).

This means it is viewed as being environmentally important at both Irish and

EU level in terms of habitat and species and is to have a Conservation Management Plan and actions.

“The water levels, according to the farmers, are four feet higher than this time last year and that was four feet higher than the year before. The lake is filling up naturally because of rainfall run-off and waterways falling towards the lake but has no working exit point to let the water out anymore.

“Water is steadily claiming more land and has crossed walls, farm boundaries, gates and many acres. This is good productive farming land being taken out of production.

“The water levels are steadily rising and having a window of opportunity to try and dig around the exit area to possibly unblock it, is closing fast.

We were told by the men that twice during this year a film of ‘Blue Algae’ formed on the surface of the water as a result of the rotting vegetation and organic material trapped under the advancing water.

“To any visitor to the lake, it is clearly evident that the trees, now under the watermark are all dead.

They stand like skeletons with their arms up in the air. There are no birds in those trees and I’m not a scientist but I am sure the EU had something else in

mind when they accepted Lough Funshinagh as an SAC and worthy of preservation of its species and habitat”.

Connacht Chairman Pat Murphy stated that “it is the responsibility of the State to uphold the management and protection of this SAC and they could be answerable to the EU for not taking action to preserve the environment of this protected area”.

He added that “a new ecological survey of the area around the lake may not reflect what was there five years ago”.

It was recently revealed that an Office of Public Works plan to run a twofoot diameter pipeline

from Lough Funshinagh to the Shannon to manage the water level has last week been ruled out following a cost-benefit analysis.

John O’Hanlon slammed this decision, claiming that the “costs are firmly on the forty-two farmers and landowners around the lake” while the benefits “seems to be with the State, as it has decided not to manage water levels therefore leaving property and livelihoods at risk”.

Roscommon Chairman, Jim O’Connor, called on all Oireachtas members and local councillors to “get behind a plan of both action and finance to get the levels sorted before it’s too late”.

Damian and family to lead virtual fundraiser!

Due to Covid-19, the annual 2020 Run, Walk n Roll in Boyle is being launched as a virtual event this year. The run has been organised by Damian Regan and his family (pictured), as well as a team of local volunteers, for the last 25 years.

“It’s bitterly disappointing that we can’t celebrate its 25th birthday the way we would like to this year, but having my daughters taking on the virtual element has allowed more people to access the event. At the end of the day, raising much-needed funds for cancer research is the priority”, said Damian Regan.

St. Angela’s College goes virtual with Q&A session In a time when virtual events are becoming the norm, awe have learned to make the best of what is available – and that’s no different for students considering their CAO options for September 2021.

Typically, this time of year would see colleges and universities welcome students and parents/guardians to their open days and other information events where they can engage with staff and learn more about college choices ahead of their CAO application.

EuroMillions players in Ballyfarnon were frantically checking tickets yesterday (Wednesday) after it emerged that a €500,000 winning ticket had been sold at Healy’s Xpress Stop Service Station in the village.

Healy’s is a family business and has been run

by Frank and Anne Healy and their son, Mark, since 2002.

Yesterday Mark discussed how news of the win had spread in Ballyfarnon.

“It’s absolutely incredible, we still cannot believe

it! I got the call from the National Lottery late last night (Tuesday) and it still feels like a dream!

“Ballyfarnon is quite a small village so knowing that one of our neighbours could be a half a million euro richer is just fantastic.

We are situated in a rural area in Co. Roscommon so we would have a lot of local customers who rely on our shop and filling station for their day-to-day essentials. We certainly hope it’s a local winner.

“This really is a huge win for the town as €500,000 would mean a great deal to somebody living in rural

Ireland. We are absolutely over the moon for the winner we hope that they enjoy this life-altering win,” he said.

The lucky numbers in the main draw were 4, 21, 36, 41, 47 and the bonus numbers were 9 and 11.

The lucky numbers in the Lotto Plus were: 5, 29, 35, 40, 50. There was no winner of the EuroMillions jackpot of €17 million.

‘FeeF’ is the brainchild of singer and musician, Siobhra Jordan. A native of Kilglass, Co. Roscommon, FeeF is heavily influenced by the surrounding lakeland environment. Her music is genre fluid, and features alternative, folk, pop with blues, jazz and reggae influences. As a kid, FeeF absorbed the songbooks of pioneers such as Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell and was heavily influenced by the early Motown releases.

A niece of the heralded musician and singer Cathy Jordan, of Irish music stalwarts, Dervish, Siobhra has carved out her own place in the industry and continues to build on her ever-expanding repertoire. Her new single ‘Who Are You’ is set for release on Monday, November 2nd and will be available digitally from that date. The single features a full band as well as a complete brass section and an official video is set to accompany release.

€70,000 in Covid support funding for local groups – Naughten

Chairperson of the Dáil Committee on Community & Rural Affairs, Denis Naughten TD, has confirmed the allocation of €70,000 to support three local voluntary organisations to cope with the impact of Covid-19. The three services are: Elphin Social Services (which is to receive €25,303), Ballinasloe Social Services (which is to receive €25,374 to support its work with older people, especially those living on their own), and the Melting Pot in Roscommon Town (which is to receive €19,395 to support services throughout the community). Funding of €93,449 is also being provided to Irish Rural Link, based in Athlone, to assist in the delivery of services throughout the region.

A country family wedding in the Covid-19 era Our columnist Frank Brandon was very relieved when his daughter’s wedding – after all of the uncertainty around such events over recent months – got to go ahead last weekend…

It’s Friday morning, the sun is shining, and after weeks or even months of uncertainty, it finally looks as if our daughter Lisa’s wedding is actually going to go ahead.

The ceremony that was originally scheduled for April will definitely take place, even though the number attending has been slashed to 46 people. This has, however, made no difference to the mayhem that occurs in the bride’s house on the wedding morning.

From early on, the hairdresser, the makeup artist, the florist, the photographer, the videographer, and (most importantly) the breakfast supplier, are all coming and going, and with all this social distancing every square foot in the house is being used. At the last minute, my son Paul and I headed off to put up directional signs to the church around the area, and even though it’s a simple enough task it took a bit longer than it should have. By the time we got back, it was time for the pre-wedding shower and to get ourselves into our suits.

One or two of the suits had been bought a little while ago, and they had definitely got smaller during the lockdown. I was cute and didn’t buy mine ‘til a week or so ago, and I have to say that Cllr. Marty McDermott and John Corcoran turned me out like a new penny. I looked so good that one of the big fashion papers (I think it was the Farmer’s

Journal) wanted me to do a bit of modelling for them, but the money wasn’t great so I turned them down.

Anyway, we did justice to the fabulous breakfast that Mikeen and Carmel O’Rourke had supplied, and all of a sudden the wedding car was outside and Lisa and I were on our way to the church for her marriage ceremony. The good news was that her now new husband, Brian, had turned up, and apart from forgetting all the flowers (we eventually got them) everything was ready to go.

Our parish priest, Fr. Donal Morris, really excelled himself with the lovely wedding Mass, the best man remembered to bring the rings, and the music and singing was just beautiful. Before we knew it, Brian and Lisa were husband and wife and all the worry and uncertainty was a thing of the past.

Then it was off to the Lakeside Hotel in Glasson (formerly the Golf and Country Club) for the reception, with the usual traditional stop in Mikeen’s for an hour or so. I have to say the hotel really ticked every box, and made it a very special day for the bride, groom, and the 46 guests.

We picked Glasson as the venue because ‘the other side’ had to travel from Cork, and we told them it was about halfway.

Even though it was a little bit of a white lie, they all enjoyed their stay there and didn’t complain too much about the extra mileage.

In fact a number of them actually stayed the extra night, as did most of our family, and we all did our best to keep our distance.

One of the things that I never pay any attention to at most weddings is the wedding cake. However, as I’ve got older, my tooth has got sweeter, and the cake (made by Deelicious Cakes down in the neighbouring parish of Oran) was exactly what it said on the tin – delicious. It’s always good to acknowledge a local business that does

things that well, so take a bow, Deelicious Cakes! (It is spelt Dee…). After all the punishment I suffered on the football field in Oran down through the years (Google Tom Mahon, Billy Reaney, the Whyte brothers and many others), it was great to be on the receiving end of such a beautiful cake. It went down an absolute treat.

Covid-19 has made such a huge difference to our world and our society, and yet even though they couldn’t actually attend the wedding, our neighbours and friends all made a huge effort…lighting bonfires, lining the roads, and even bringing wedding presents. On behalf of us all, thank you very much.

At the end of it all, the overriding feeling is one of relief, and as I write this on Monday evening – with the whole country about to go into Level 3 – my heart goes out to all those brides and grooms who have their big days on the horizon. The uncertainty they will have to deal with is just extraordinary, and the stresses they will have to face will make their futures very difficult.

In Lisa’s case it was probably even more stressful as the original invites had all gone out, so it was difficult to ‘un-invite’ so many people. Luckily however, they all understood, and in the end it was whittled down to immediate family members and really close friends.

To be honest, even if Covid is eventually defeated, that is the way to go. The hotels wouldn’t be too happy, but it would make life so much easier for the couple themselves and everyone who would actually attend would feel really special, because they would know they were only there because they mattered so much to the bride and groom. However, as with everything, if normality ever returns, I’m sure it will all go back to big weddings with big crowds.

Before I leave Glasson, as I told you it used to be the Golf and Country Club, and the Golf Club is still there. So on Saturday morning Carol and I took out the clubs and headed out onto the lovely lakeside course.

Overlooking the beautiful Lough Ree, the scenery at the course was just spectacular, and remarkably the golf wasn’t too bad either!

Carol will be the first to admit that she is no Leona Maguire, but on Saturday she played very well, and to my everlasting shame she comprehensively outplayed me.

Revenge will be sweet, and please God sometime soon I will take her to Castlerea and regain my position as No. 1 golfer in the Brandon household.

The other amazing thing about the two days was the weather – for two October days it was just so wonderful. I played the golf in just a short-sleeved shirt, and even at that it was still very warm.

On Friday, the photographer had to wait a while for the sun to hide a bit so he could take his pictures.

All in all, an event that was so uncertain at times has finally taken place, and I don’t think it could have been any better.

Thank you to everyone who contributed in any way, including the pianist, Adrian Harrington (nearly forgot him), who was on hand on our arrival at the hotel, and who serenaded us all so beautifully until it was time for the dinner.

So that’s that, the happy couple has gone away (obviously around Ireland), and hopefully the new lockdown regulations won’t do anything to ruin their plans. I, meanwhile, am going back to normal life, whatever that will now mean. Before we know it, Christmas will be here, and no matter what, Santa always finds a way to make his annual visits.

John gets his medal …55 years later!

Finally for this week, I came across a lovely story recently when 81-year-old John Deacy was presented with the Westmeath senior football championship medal that he won playing for Athlone in 1965. Because he had moved from the town when the presentation function took place, he had never actually received it.

Despite mentioning it a few times down through the years, he didn’t get it, and had given up all hope of ever receiving the medal. So, when former Mayo footballer and present Athlone GAA team manager Liam McHale called to his house on the outskirts of Castlebar to finally hand over the long

overdue medal, he was – in his own words – utterly gobsmacked.

I don’t know if the long wait was worth it, but it certainly made more news than if he got it at the right time, because I have seen and heard him being interviewed on several media outlets in the last week or so. All I can say

is he looks hale and hearty and nothing like his 81 years.

Congratulations John! I’m sure that even after all these years, you will treasure it, because most club footballers go through their careers without ever even playing in a senior county final, never mind actually winning one, so good on you!

NewsPeople newsbriefs Man charged with possession of guns and ammunition A 33-year-old Dublin man has been remanded in custody charged with possession of three loaded pistols in his van when stopped by Gardaí in Castlerea on Wednesday night, September 30th.

Gary Bligh, a father of three from Rathvilly Park, Finglas, Dublin 11, appeared before a special sitting of Castlerea District Court last Friday.

He made no reply to the six charges, including possessing two Sig Sauer P226 pistols and one Sig Sauer P228 pistol.

He was also charged with possessing sixteen 9mm rounds in two of the firearms and fifteen rounds in the other.

Judge Faughnan remanded Mr. Bligh in custody but said he would re-examine the bail application at a special sitting of Castlerea District Court.

Murphy welcomes occupational therapist funding for libraries Senator Eugene Murphy has welcomed the announcement of funding for the provision of an occupational therapist for a sort fixed time period in order to undertake a comprehensive consultation process with three participating Library Authorities: Roscommon, Leitrim and Sligo.

The project is to assist people with autism, sensory needs and intellectual disabilities from across the three counties.

Vintners’ Chair: ‘Level 3 is discriminatory against pubs’ < DAN DOONER

The Chairman of the Roscommon Town and District Vintners’ Branch, Larry Brennan, says Wednesday’s move to Level 3 restrictions is unfair on the vast majority of pubs.

Speaking to the Roscommon People, Mr. Brennan said: “It’s discriminatory against pubs because it’s Level 3 for every other business but Level 5 for pubs. Pubs can remain open with restrictions, including fifteen people outside, but that means most pubs will close. Very few pubs have the facilities to cater for people outside and during the winter months in Ireland it’s just not practical.

“You can assure punters that you will do everything in your power to ensure that they don’t get Covid-19 but can’t guarantee they won’t catch pneumonia sitting outside,” he said.

Mr. Brennan was adamant that the majority of pubs had stuck rigidly to the HSE guidelines on reopening.

“Pubs have again been victimised. We all know that public health is the priority and that numbers are going up but there is no evidence that pubs that complied with the guidelines contributed to the current spike.

“Publicans and customers were getting used to the new guidelines and this is

Local GP, Dr. Martin Daly, has said the GAA were left with little alternative but to suspend club activity, prior to the Government’s announcement of Level 3 lockdown, following concerning scenes on social media last weekend.

Dr. Daly said the association acted in order for there to be any hope of the intercounty championships taking place later this year.

“It is most unfortunate that club competitions were suspended earlier this week. The championships were a great source of interest for people who had

been so restricted by the pandemic earlier this year.

“However, there were concerns raised (throughout the championships), including by myself, regarding breaches of guidelines in grounds and during celebrations.

“It’s a pity that there wasn’t leadership around club matches earlier with clear instructions around celebrations.

“The GAA drew the conclusion that all activities must be suspended and have acted because if we can’t arrest the growth of this pandemic then the inter-county championship is at serious risk,” he said.

Dr. Daly said that the recent scenes on social media following county finals made the GAA an obvious target for criticism.

The Ballygar-based GP added that the advice from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) earlier this week was “a shot across the bows” for the Government to act decisively following a rise in Covid-19 cases nationally.

Dr. Daly said a move to Level 5 would be “disastrous” and that the Government must now make a renewed appeal to the public to act responsibly.

That said, I’m sure readers will join me in wishing the US president (for now), and his wife Melania a speedy recovery as they fight off the effects of Covid-19.

RTE’s Saturday schedule reeks of the leftover and the third rate!

To my mind, many of the most boring Saturday night chat shows have originated in RTE. Yep, I’m talking about The Ray D’Arcy Show; a bloated disappointment if ever there was one. And now, with a winter spent in total lockdown hanging over us, our national broadcaster, instead of trying to cheer up a nation confined to cramped houses packed with Ikea furniture, has instead taken the decision to give Deirdre O’Kane, (left), her own show and put her on d’telly!

Now, while Deirdre has been described as ‘Ireland’s comedy queen’ in my opinion, having been to one of her shows, I have to say the woman’s comedy is about as unappetising and as flat as one of my Shrove Tuesday pancakes!

Therefore, even though I’m sure she’s a lovely lady, I’ll tell ya this much folks, given that RTE’s autumn/winter Saturday night schedule reeks of the leftover and the third rate, I for one won’t be tuning in.

Covid-19 in Ireland, resulting in 1,801 deaths. That’s an awful lot of families grieving the loss of a loved one; an awful lot of families who were unable to properly say goodbye and mourn the tragic death of a parent or a partner. An awful lot of families who couldn’t celebrate their dearly departed loved one’s life and provide them with an appropriate burial. The above limitations, and the sorrow they bring, are significantly heightened by these families feeling additional fear and anxiety regarding contracting this virus themselves; all of which can greatly complicate and impede their abilities to adapt, to heal and to recover.

Taking this into account, I found professional attentionseeker Sinead O’Connor’s reaction to Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis to be nauseating, and view it as being just another pathetic attempt on her part to remain relevant. O’Connor, (or Shuhada Sadaqat as she calls herself following her conver-

sion to Islam, and her aversion to footwear), in my opinion, possesses all of the finesse of a junior infant attempting foundations phonics for the first time, tweeted ‘Thank you God. #TrumpHasCovid’. For good measure, she added, ‘I couldn’t give a f*** what anyone thinks. I hope it takes him’.

These comments are not only

insensitive, they’re also insulting to every single bereaved Irish family who’s desperately struggling with a multitude of intense and crippling emotions.

Now I know it has been well documented that Sinead/Shuhada has experienced mental health drawbacks throughout her life, and I admit – apart from what I’ve read and seen

on TV during her many, many ‘pity me’ interviews, and her many name/religion changes, I know nothing about her issues.

However, that doesn’t mean I don’t have empathy with her, and if Sinead/ Shuhada is ill, she’s entitled to the same level of understanding and help as everyone else. Nevertheless, lashing out at a seriously ill 74-year-old pensioner, (even if he is the insufferable Putin’s pet), is unacceptable, it’s childish and it’s downright spiteful.

Then again, the Doc Martin-wearing warbler (when she’s not going barefoot on the Late Late Show), does, according to reports, have an early 2021 memoir and an album to peddle and, as she has (to my view) never been less entertaining or relevant, would be better off keeping her wounding remarks to herself.

Has Senator Garvey been infected with a dose of unconscious bias?

I don’t care if she’s apologised, I find Senator Róisín Garvey’s despicable comments delivered to Green Party activists advising them not to use ‘big words’ when trying to appeal to ‘rural voters and Travellers as they may not understand what they mean’ to be highly inflammatory!

According to reports, Ms. Garvey, who made the comments during a debate at the party’s National Convention last week, clearly believes we rural dwellers are so thick, words like ‘sustainable’ and ‘biodiversity’ sail right over our heads. Indeed, according to the tediously dull Róisín, when approaching us rural bubble-heads, it’s best to “talk about the flowers, talk about the cattle. Talk about the robin, the sparrow. I think colloquialism is important and I think simple vocabulary includes everybody”. Aw bless you hon, by coming out with such traducing tripe you’ve now reinforced my belief that vocalising unintelligent and stereotypical remarks is no barrier to ignorant buffoons being elected into powerful positions.

Now I won’t generalise, because I know

not every politician is nescient – eh, that means thick as a brick, love – I mean if they were, the entire Dáil would probably collapse quicker than you could say ‘here’s my travel and accommodation allowance’. However, given your faux pas – that means blunders – involving WhatsApp messages criticising Catherine Martin TD, (and, in a pathetic attempt to be droll), your use of the word ‘bigger’ regarding Minister Eamon Ryan’s shameful use of the derogatory ‘N’ word, it’s clear you may have become infected with a serious dose of unconscious bias!

To that end Róisín, given your obvious predilection – it means fondness, dear – to act the eejit, and given the fact some people seem drawn to electing individuals with questionable intellectual abilities, can I ask, would you possibly be better employed as the Seanad’s Court Jester? Then again, if you decide to remain a senator, perhaps an intensive course focusing on upgrading your metacognitive skills prior to opening your gob would be in order… call me!

IRISH ROAD SAFETY WEEK…

Motorists urged to ‘get a grip’ and check tyres FREE TYRE CHECKS! The Road Safety Authority (RSA), An Garda Síochána and the Irish Tyre Industry Association (ITIA), have teamed up for ‘Tyre Safety Week’ to remind all road users to check their tyres.

Sam Waide, Chief Executive of the RSA, said: “There is no component on your vehicle more likely to contribute to a crash than your tyres. They are your only contact with the road and if they are not fit for purpose, everything else is secondary.

“Based on the analysis of road collision reports, we estimate that defective tyres could be a contributory factor in as many as 14 deaths each year. But people don’t often think about their tyres – are they inflated correctly, are they below the minimum tread depth, are they damaged in any way?

“Don’t wait for your NCT to check if your tyres are roadworthy.

Do a regular walk-around of your car and check your tyres – look for cuts, cracks, or bulges. If you are unsure, or don’t know anything about tyres, get them checked by a local ITIA-registered dealer regularly”.

Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman, National Roads Policing Bureau, An Garda Síochána, said: “Defective tyres are a serious risk to all road users. Gardaí encounter many tragedies on Irish roads and have to deal with people who have suffered serious lifechanging injuries. Many of these can be avoided if your vehicle is

roadworthy and you drive within the speed limit. Have your tyres checked regularly, reduce your speed and together we can make the roads safer.

“Members of the Roads Policing Units across the country will be mounting roadside checks in conjunction with Road Safety Authority Vehicle Inspectors checking tyres on vehicles at the roadside during Tyre Safety Week. If you are found to be driving a vehicle with defective tyres you could face up to four penalty points if convicted and a fixed penalty of up to €120”.

Sue O’Neill, CEO of Irish Tyre Industry Association, said: “Irish Tyre Industry Association members are experts in tyre health and can reassure drivers that their vehicle is safe on the road.

“During Irish Road Safety Week, October 5th-11th, our members are offering free tyre checks, so don’t wait until your NCT comes around to check the roadworthiness of your tyres, do it today. To find your nearest ITIA registered dealer nationwide, visit itia.ie”.

Some tips The minimum tread depth of your tyres is 1.6mm/1mm on a motorcycle (replace with new tyres before you reach this level); the tyre pressure is in the owner’s hand manual or fuel cap; cuts, cracks, and sidewall damage or bulge are the dangers to look for on a tyre; and don’t forget to check the spare tyre.

Who was George Geraghty?

As our serialisation of the writings of George Geraghty comes to an end, PAUL HEALY has been finding out more about the man…

George Geraghty was the second youngest child of Patrick Geraghty (born circa 1821) and his wife Kate (nee Moran, born circa 1837). There were twelve children in the family (not unusual in those days).

George was born on February 7th, 1878. The family home was in Church Street, Roscommon, “opposite the entrance to Henry Street” according to one local historian.

His mother gave birth to that large family over an 18-year period from 1861 to 1879. Sadly, she died in September 1879, while giving birth to her last child (who also died).

George was only 19 months old at the time of his mother’s untimely death.

His father, Patrick, was “a mason and a builder”. Most of his sons followed in his footsteps. By the late 1880s, several of George’s siblings had moved on; John and Jimmy to South Africa, Martin, Peter, Francis, Patrick, Vincent and Annie to Australia.

In fact, the 1901 Census reveals that there were only three people living in the house in Church Street at that time; Patrick (then aged 70), daughter Kate (32) and son George (23). Kate would later die in the 1918 ‘Spanish Flu’ pandemic.

In South Africa, John and Jimmy Geraghty worked in the building industry. Jimmy married a South African woman, Marion Harford.

In 1899, the couple moved to Ireland with their infant son, Reginald, and Marion’s sister, Maggie.

After settling briefly in Dublin, they moved to Henry Street, Roscommon (by now they had another son). Meanwhile, John Geraghty sadly died in an accident while working as a mason in Pretoria (in 1901).

George Geraghty married Maggie Harford (his brother’s sister-in-law) on the 7th of January, 1904. The couple had three children: John, Edmund and Eileen. Margaret (Maggie) died in Goff Street, Roscommon on the 26th of January, 1908, three weeks after giving

birth to Eileen. She was just 32 years of age.

Jimmy Geraghty (George’s brother) died in Henry Street on the 2nd of April, 1910 (aged just 43). The 1911 Census revealed that George (now a widower) and Marion (now a widow) were living with their combined families in Henry Street at that time.

George married for a second time.

On the 27th of April, 1918, he and Ellen (Nellie) McDermott were wed. Ellen was a shoemaker’s daughter from Castle Street, Roscommon.

From an early age, George had been politically active. He served as chair-

man of Roscommon Town Commissioners. A founder member of Roscommon Gaels GAA Club, he was also a member of the 3rd Battalion of the South Roscommon IRA Brigade.

George participated in the 1916 Easter Rising (with the 1st Battalion of the Dublin Brigade). Subsequently he served time in Wakefield Prison and Fromngoch Camp.

Now, two years on, and less than a month after marrying Ellen, George was arrested while he was at work, carrying out repairs to the spire of the Sacred Heart Church in Roscommon. He was interned in Usk Prison in Wales.

Roscommon Gaels’ link…

Roscommon Gaels (football and hurling) club was set up in George Geraghty’s house (Castle Street) in 1901. At this meeting the amalgamation of both football and hurling as well as a literary section took place. It was motivated by ‘The Irish Ireland Movement’ of 1901 in Dublin. This movement’s objective was the revival of the Irish language and National Games and the support of Irish manufacture.

When the new club won a county senior hurling title in December 1902, George Geraghty was captain. It was the first of many successes.

The following January (1919) he took part in a daring escape along with Frank Shouldice (from Ballaghaderreen) and Joe McGrath and Barney Mellowes.

Described as “an ardent nationalist”, he was elected as a Sinn Fein member of Roscommon County Council the following year (2020) and served in that capacity for a number of years. During the War of Independence, he fought with the Dublin Brigade. After the Truce, he joined the Free State Army, serving as an officer.

His passion for and pride in Roscommon Town is evident from his writings. He was clearly very enthusiastic about sport, excelling in Gaelic football, hurling and cycling. In his spare time, he also played fife in the ‘Roscommon Town Independent Band’.

When Joe McGrath co-founded the Irish Hospital Sweepstakes in 1930, among the staff he recruited was his fellow prison escapee, George Geraghty. George worked with the Irish Hospital Sweepstakes until his death in 1952 (not 1953 as previously reported). He had spent his latter years living in Fairview in Dublin, where he was a keen golfer (he was Captain at St. Anne’s for three successive years). He died in Hume Street Hospital in July, 1952, and was laid to rest in St. Coman’s Cemetery in Roscommon. * This article is informed by local historians who kindly contacted the Roscommon People to provide information on George N. If my jotting down of any little notes that may in any way interest the few old townsmen left, and if the younger people will read them to learn what Roscommon was like before they were born, I will be pleased. I am a long time away from my old home town and as I advance in years the memory of the very happy days I spent with my boy comrades become more intense and as my thoughts carried me back to wandering in the old castle fields and the Lough grounds and from there to a walk though Mote Park I was tempted to write the foregoing few notes just as my memory dictated them.

‘The Work House’, and ‘The Union’, was a very miserable institution. It was planned and built under the English

Government then in occupation of Ireland and needless to say, anything was good enough for the Irish.

The crude masonry walls were never plastered on the inside. Just whitewashed. There was no water supply, and the sanitary conditions were appalling. The dining hall, a big cold barn with flagged floor which was always wet in bad weather.

The little chapel beside the dining hall no better. The beds in most cases composed of straw or chaff mattresses with very scant and rough bed clothing, the food poor and served almost cold. Tin saucepans for the tea and the bread cut in junks and left on the bare dirty table.

The men inmates wore badly tailored corduroy pants and a freeze jacket, and it was God help any old inmate that could not take care of himself. There were always a few able-bodied loavers who acted as wardsmen (voluntary). They had the pick of the food and unless they got well tipped they did nothing to help the old and infirm inmates.

Any inmates who died and had no friends were buried in Bully’s Acre, situated near the Railway culvert over the Hind River and a sad looking funeral it was. Two paupers and a donkey cart, a plain shabby old deal coffin covered with a dirty rub of ash colour paint.

But today the County Home is a home for the old and infirm in every way. Thanks to Mother Paul and the Sisters under her charge, the old building is transformed beyond description with proper bedding, food and sanitary accommodation and the English brand of Poor Law pauperism for the Irish gone forever.

How George’s memories hooked readers… < PAUL HEALY

Every keen reader knows that feeling you get when reading a particularly enjoyable or engrossing book…and you just don’t want it to end!

Personally, I often check to see how many pages are in the book and then George and Ellen’s wedding photograph do a quick (1918). calculation to work out how many I have left to read! I’m pretty sure that many readers can identify with this ‘I don’t want to get to the end of this book’ feeling.

It was a bit like that with the George Geraghty series. A number of months ago, the Roscommon People began a feature in the paper whereby we serialised the writings of George N. Geraghty, a Roscommon man who died almost 70 years ago. The column –‘Roscommon As It Was’ – featured George’s memories of life in Roscommon Town from the early years of the 20th century. It’s been a fascinating read; now, like a really enjoyable book, there is sadness that the end has come!

This all began when Martin Geraghty (a grandson of George’s) popped into the Roscommon People office in Abbey Street.

Martin informed me that he had a copy of his late grandfather’s writings. They had been published (at least in part) many, many decades ago. However, many generations of Roscommon people had never seen or been aware of the writings.

The last thing Martin was seeking was for some retrospective spotlight to be placed on the writings; instead, he was offering them to me in case I had any interest in popping an occasional extract into the People now and again.

He thought it might be nice to share them, in snippets. I immediately told him I was very interested, and would look at the A4 pages in due course.

A number of months passed before I followed through on that promise. When I began to read the content, I loved it. George Geraghty wrote well. He clearly had a tremendous knowledge of the town and its people. His written memories are an invaluable service to his town and to generations of people. George Geraghty loved Roscommon. He truly did his county some great service in recording his observations and views.

The reaction to our publishing of ‘Roscommon As It Was’ was very positive. People love to read about the past, and I know that readers were greatly intrigued and entertained by George’s remarkably detailed and invaluable writings.

Belgian police investigating Twitter hack – ‘Ming’ < DAN DOONER

Independent MEP Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan says Belgian police have been called in to investigate what he has called a suspected hacking of his Twitter account last week.

The Castlerea native claimed he was hacked after a tweet pertaining to ‘skinny dipping’ photographs of former Green Party candidate Saoirse McHugh was posted from his Twitter handle in the early hours of Monday, September 28th.

The tweet which prompted Mr. Flanagan’s social media secu-

rity review read: ‘Sapirse mchugh photo skinnydipping. (sic)’ and has since been deleted.

Mr. Flanagan has campaigned on a number of occasions with Ms. McHugh, who was an unsuccessful candidate in the 2019 European elections and in this year’s General Election.

In a statement to the media earlier this week, Mr. Flanagan said: “Directorate-General for Security and Safety of the European Parliament (DG SAFE) are assisting me with a police investigation into the unauthorised use of my Twitter

account which took place from a location in Belgium. A Parliamentary assistant of mine along with an appointed investigator from DG SAFE met with the Belgian Police on Wednesday morning (September 30th).

“I have now established that my Twitter account had been logged into on a third party app called Tweetcaster. This app allowed an individual to tweet from my account using an old password. This app was used twice to access my Twitter account from Belgium on September 28th. The same day

that an unauthorised tweet was posted and then deleted from my account.

“At the time the tweet was posted and then deleted I was in Ireland and have been since March of this year due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The police have been provided with the Belgian IP address associated with the use of my account on the Tweetcaster app on that day.

“They are now working with me to establish the exact location and identity of the individual who has carried out this malicious act of vandalism on my good name”.

Kerrane presses for single authority approach on River Shannon

Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane and colleagues have introduced legislation to establish a single Authority to manage and maintain the Shannon.

Currently there are twenty agencies from the ESB to Waterways Ireland to Local Authorities involved in water management and maintenance of the River Shannon.

Speaking in the Dáil while introducing the Bill, Deputy Kerrane said: “I think everyone who lives, farms and works along the River Shannon are sick and tired of the flood hitting, politicians coming out on boats, getting their photos taken, saying how awful it is and walking away.

“The flooding then recedes, and all is forgotten until the floods hit

again. This has been allowed to happen over and over again.

“These floods are devastating to homes, farmlands, and businesses.

They erode the quality of life in rural Ireland and jeopardise its very existence.

“The River Shannon needs to be maintained and it needs to be managed. A single Authority with sole responsibility for the management

of the longest river in the State makes sense. This Bill establishes the River Shannon Management Agency on a statutory footing.

“Businesses have had to close.

Families have had their homes destroyed. Farm animals have been drowned. It is well overdue that we put families, farmers and businesses first. I urge cross-party support for this legislation”.

Light shed on Oldwood estate!

Fianna Fáil councillor Marty McDermott has welcomed the provision of new lighting at the Oldwood estate in Roscommon Town. The need for lighting at the estate – located on the route leading from Hannon’s Hotel to Roscommon Golf Club – has been an issue for a number of years.

Speaking to the Roscommon People this week, Cllr. McDermott said that the provision of the lighting is a very welcome development.

“Local residents brought this to my attention during the 2019 election campaign and subsequently as well. They have been concerned about this lighting issue for a number of years, primarily from a safety perspective.

“There are families living there, with young children. It is imperative that people can go about their lives in safety. I am so glad to get this resolved. Confirmation of these works is very welcome and I would like to thank the planning department in Roscommon County Council for their part in this positive outcome”.

Cllr. McDermott said that he is working on a number of projects for residents in the wider Roscommon area and will continue to work closely with Roscommon County Council to achieve progress.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has welcomed actions by his Fianna Fáil colleague, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly TD, which will see “wide-ranging, affordable health measures” introduced from November 1st of this year.

Senator Murphy explained: “Fianna Fáil in Government are committed to ensuring healthcare is accessible for all. This is why Minister Donnelly has received Cabinet ‘sign-off’ on a number of measures that will make access to medical care and medicine more affordable.

“From November 1st, over 56k people over the age of 70 will now be eligible for a medical card. Income limits will be changed, allowing people in this age group to apply. This is the first change to the limits since they were introduced six years ago.

“Prescription charges will be reduced by 50c for all medical card holders. This means people under 70 will pay a maximum of €15 per month for their prescribed medicines, while those over 70 will pay €10 per month. The drug payment scheme will also be altered to the benefit of all participants”.

The dry cows and breeding stock reported good clearances also. Cows with calves at foot made from €850 to €1,460 per head and springer cows made from €860 to €1,070 per head.

Young calves made from €150 to €440 with runners making from €380 to €890 for the continental lots.

Roscommon MART WATCH Dry cows, heifers and bullocks: There was a very large entry of cattle on offer at Friday’s sale (October 2nd, 2020), which included a special sale of bullocks. There was a flying trade for bullocks, with plenty of customers in attendance resulting in the majority of lots getting sold. Prices ranged from an average of €2.36 per kilo up to €3.06 per kilo: heifers fetched from an average of €2.16 per kilo up to €2.67 per kilo, and dry cows made from an average of €1.62 per kilo up to €2.07 per kilo.

A special sale of heifers and a general sale of bullocks and dry cows takes place on Friday, October 9th, with 114 pens of heifers on offer.

Sales commence at 11 am, with intake from 7.30 am up to 9.30 am. Viewing is by appointment from 10-10.45 am, with limited access to the ring for buyers only. Our online bidding facility with LSL is also available. Gates close at 9.45 am.

Buyers were active online and at the ringside.

Another show and sale of weanlings takes place on Tuesday, October 13th at 4 pm, with bookings accepted up to 5 pm on October 8th.

Redefining your ‘socially isolating’ living space < MIRIAM KERINS

Whether we like it or not, Covid-19 has forced us to spend a lot more time in our homes, meaning we’ve possibly become more aware of how our space (or lack of it) affects our mood.

With that in mind, we’ve decided to put together a few interior design tips that we hope will go some way towards enhancing your current domestic situation. So, whether you’re carefully crafting new colour schemes, looking at lighting solutions or are simply musing over material swatches, grab a coffee, read on and allow us, your favourite newspaper, to ease you into your ‘socially isolating’ lifestyle.

A neglected occasional table Moved into a different corner, a coffee table – complete with a lamp popped on top – will not only provide a comfy reading or listening-to-music area, it’ll also offer you a bit of extra space on which to land the TV remote, a coffee cup, or even an empty brandy balloon. Then again, if you’ve got Nana’s old antique armchair stored in the attic, now’s the time to

rescue it, and repurpose it by having it reupholstered to match your décor. Aaah Nana would be so proud.

A pop of colour Painting your interior walls is possibly one of the easiest ways to transform an entire room. And, if you’re a parent who has been home-schooling the kiddies during lockdown, it’s highly likely that many of your walls may need a bit of a refresh.

However, while pinpointing the perfect colour for your room (whether it’s a sitting room, a bedroom or a kitchen) can often prove to be tricky, the colours set to dominate homes for autumn/winter 2020 are elegant neutrals like warm creams, moody blues, greys and avocado greens. Remember, you heard it here first – you’re welcome! Our top tip: If your room has a south facing, sunny aspect, opt for a mixture of light and dark tones. If it’s a north-facing room, warm it up with an earthy shade such as a duck egg blue or a rustic green.

The big design story for autumn/winter 2020 is (wait for it) chintz! Now don’t shoot the messenger, we’re simply relaying the

However, if you want to buy into this interior chapter, we suggest you start in a minimalist way by hanging some printed cotton curtains against a pale, earthy backdrop of a wall. Then again, for the more adventurous, why not drape a large dining table with a floor skimming chintz tablecloth complete with 1920’s-inspired ruffles?

Oh, here’s another idea: if you’re lucky enough to have a conservatory, furnish it with a chintzy set of wicker armchairs and a two-seater sofa, all accessorised by a matching, flowery, shabby-chic pouffe/footstool.

As we’re all partaking of the pandemic tipple at home, why not make the neighbours jealous with your very own art decoinspired cocktail cart – complete with a retro neon ‘bar’ sign. Did somebody shout happy hour?

Opulent finishing touches We’ve got one word: glamour! Whether you opt for a traditional-style arms and branches chandelier, (a la the classic Only Fools & Horses ‘A Touch of Glass’

episode), or the plastic, fake, but much more affordable ceiling light (or as I like to call mine, a hanging pendant – notions), you cannot underestimate the importance of lighting in a room. Depending on what you choose – whether it’s a decent lamp, a chandelier, some directional spotlights or a set of subtle wall lights – your room’s overall ambience, functionality and style will hang on your final decision. Our tip: Chat with your local DIY/lighting showroom assistant, explain to them the type of atmosphere you’re going for, discuss your overall room plan, (take a pic on your phone if possible and show it to them), and get them to throw their expert and experienced eye over your design before making your final decision.

Donald in Blunderland Former Fourmilehouse resident, MICHAEL DRYHURST, now living in the USA, sent us this overview of ‘Trump’s America’ recently!

There was a time when the world envied the USA, but since this president took office, those days are long gone.

Why? Well, primarily, because of the coronavirus.

At some 330 million inhabitants, the United States accounts for four percent of the world’s population, but when it comes to the pandemic,

the USA constitutes twenty percent, yes, that’s TWENTY percent, of the world’s confirmed cases, and by now some 210,000 plus deaths have been recorded here.

Remember Pinocchio? Every time he lied, his nose grew longer? Well, given the number of porkies he’s uttered by now, Donald Trump’s proboscis should be as long as Roscommon’s Circular Road, if not longer.

And his greatest lie has been his attitude to the pandemic. He has said consistently and publicly that “... it will go away”, “we’ve turned the corner”, “it’s just a strain of ‘flu”, and other such hyperbole when, as early as 28th January 2020, he has known of the devastating effects of the virus, the no-holds-barred details being given to him by his Intelligence Agencies on that date, with Trump deliberately keeping from the American people, the truth. Had he come forth, thou-

sands of American lives would have been saved.

Trump’s domicile is given as Florida.

His place of work is Washington D.C. Recently, Florida held its primaries before the general Election on 3rd of November. He and the First Lady voted by mail-in ballot, yet he and his administration are railing against mail-in voting – “...As it will lead to massive voter fraud” – sowing thereby the seeds of confusion to such an extent that if he loses the election, he’ll demand recount after recount to try to prove that cast were fraudulent votes.

Silence is not an answer. But the Republican Party, now The Trump Republican Party, stands by, mute, dumb, stum. The upcoming general election may well be the most important in the history of the United States. Just wish we had a younger candidate...

Still, gasoline (petrol) is only $1.71 a gallon of regular, that’s about €1.40...

mind you, a U.S. gallon equals only 3.785 litres, but much cheaper than anywhere in Ireland?

Be safe – wear a mask, maintain social distancing, wash those hands regularly and don’t mix with any sort of crowd.

Covid-19: Level 5 would have ‘dire impact’

In praise of Roscommon Hospital staff

Rooskey, Co. Roscommon Dear Editor, In my opinion, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan made a terrible mistake last weekend which has damaged his relationship with the Government and the Irish people.

The unexpected proposal from the CMO to put the country to Level 5 (effectively in lockdown) would have had dire effects for the mental and economic well-being of the Irish people had it been accepted by the Government.

What Dr. Tony did the other night was not right and it wasn’t fair. He left the Government in a very awkward position. To automatically recommend going to national lockdown at Level 5 was, in my opinion, absolutely outrageous and completely panicked almost the entire nation. People were left thinking that grandparents would be deprived of seeing their grandchildren all over again, that you couldn’t visit your sick relatives, that businesses would shut down, and that people would have to isolate all over again. We all remember what a shockingly traumatic time this was for everybody and we do not want to go back there.

I feel Level 3 on a national basis is a sufficient move at this time but it does need to be reviewed regularly. But I do not see Level 5 across the country as a tenable option at any stage. I think each county’s status should be taken on a county by county basis. To put counties like Leitrim and Mayo – where incidence rates remain very low – in a national lockdown whereby all their residents suffer is just not viable and not acceptable. This needs to be thought out long and hard before any definitive decision is made.

I would call on the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs to make some changes to the Pandemic

Oldwood, Roscommon Dear Editor, I would like to take this opportunity, in your widely read newspaper, to highlight the outstanding service which is being provided by all staff at Roscommon Hospital.

Specifically, I had recent experience of availing of the service provided at the Endoscopy Unit. I would like to commend the staff there for their friendliness and professionalism.

Following the passing of my father (RIP) last year, it was necessary for me to have a colonoscopy in Roscommon Hospital recently. My family’s experience, with the loss of my much-loved father, underlines for me the importance of early intervention with regard to possible cancer diagnoses/ other illnesses.

If people are worried about their health, I would strongly advise them to go to a GP and have a check-up. I know that many men, in particular, can be reluctant to do this, but I would urge people to please be proactive. In particular, people who have any family history (of serious illnesses) should have regular check-ups.

In conclusion, I would like to thank staff of Roscommon Hospital for their professionalism and courtesy. We are all indebted to them. Thank you.

Unemployment Payment. Recently I called for the PUP to be cut and for people to be encouraged to go back to work. But that was then and this is now…for those people whose lives are now disrupted by this latest development and who are out of work, they absolutely have to be reimbursed and the cut in PUP has to be looked at immediately – and I would say increased back up to the €350 for those who deserve it, i.e. for those who earned up to that level before the pandemic.

But to provide a blanket amount of €350 across the board is not viable. I would call on the social welfare people to amend their current system and request that applications are accompanied by an individual’s last three payslips. This would be a very simple step – and would ensure that appropriate payment levels will apply.

I understand that nobody wants to be in the position that we are in now and that the Government are saying that we don’t have the money to keep going, that the country is broke and that people are on the poverty line – but poverty will kill more people than Covid-19 does. A happy medium has to be found and needs to be reached as a matter of

urgency before this country and its people suffer any more.

He won the opening 4-Y-O maiden on Grady Hollow for Colin Bowe, and then struck 600 winners on First Love in the mare’s maiden making it 601 on Handy Headon for David Christie. O’Neill joins three of the sport’s greatest in Derek O’Connor, Jamie Codd and the late John Thomas McNamara as only the 4th man to ride 600 between the flags.

Creggs win in Monivea!

Cawley Cup (Round 3): Monivea 10 Creggs 29. Creggs maintained their 100 per cent early season success with their third win from three in the Cawley Cup via a hardearned win over Monivea at the Castle Grounds on Sunday.

The contest was much closer than the final scoreline suggests with Brian Diffley and Tom Fleming scoring late tries as Creggs pulled away in the last ten minutes.

Creggs got off to a good start when Brian Donohoe availed on an error in the Monivea line-out to touch down for an opportunist’s try after just three minutes of play.

However, Monivea hit back with a penalty before carving the Creggs’ defence open with an excellent try under the posts. The straightforward conversion put the home team ahead by 10-5.

Creggs responded with an impressive period of forward control which ultimately yielded a fine try for prop forward Jack Tucker when he crashed over for a well-worked score. Shortly afterwards, both

fifth try shortly afterwards, with Purcell again adding the conversion.

Depending on the then status of Level 3 restrictions, Creggs are down to face local rivals Dunmore on Saturday, October 24th in the final group game. Creggs will be hoping to preserve their perfect record in order to secure a home semi-final draw.

The teams were level 10-10 at half-time, but Creggs dominated the opening stages of the second half and were rewarded when full-back Shane Dowd scored a third try, impressively finishing off a sweeping move by the backline.

ties in the build-up to this try, and eventually the referee’s patience ran out as he issued two yellow cards in quick succession to the home team.

Team captain, Brian Diffley’s 70th minute try, converted by Shane Purcell, came following a series of scrums and line-outs close to the Monivea line.

The Creggs U-13 squad kicked off their season with a friendly game against Carrick-on-Shannon on the 4G pitch last Saturday evening. It was a big occasion for the youngsters and their first game on a large pitch, having graduated from Mini Rugby.

A total of 33 players got game time for Creggs and they all embraced the new experience of 15-a-side rugby.

A good, competitive game – with plenty of nice rugby played by both sides – ended on a scoreline of 24-22 in favour of Carrick-onShannon.

Short putts NEWS FROM LOCAL GOLF CLUBS Roscommon The Winter Leagues are now up and running at Roscommon Golf Club so good luck to everyone taking part.

The club’s Jack O’Sullivan team lost out to Gort during the week which ends Roscommon’s interclub involvement for another year.

Meanwhile, Jackie Maxwell won the recent ladies’ 9-hole qualifying competition with Veronica Clarke in second place.

Joan O’Gara was the winner of last Thursday’s competition with 37 points while June Halliday was runner-up with 35.

The senior ladies’ competition on October 1st was won by Phil Murray O’Brien. Larry Lalor was the runnerup. The men’s result was as follows: Peter Brady, Willie Doyle, John Cunningham and Tommie Gilleran.

Members are reminded that facemasks must be worn in the clubhouse and that slots are booked on BRS.

Castlerea

BREAKING BALL

Waiting game as Rossies plan for Armagh date The inter-county football and hurling scene is expected to be given the green light to resume on the weekend of October 17th.

However there is a doubt about the National League Division Two game between Roscommon and Armagh which was fixed for Saturday week at an Armagh venue.

Armagh have halted their training after a number of their players tested positive for Covid-19 last week. A statement on the status of this fixture is expected to be made this weekend.

Former Kilmore and Roscommon star Don Connellan was the manager as Moycullen won their first ever Galway SFC title last Sunday when they beat Mountbellew/Moylough by four points (2-12 to 1-11) at Pearse Stadium.

The Kilmore man is a member of An Garda Síochána, serving in Galway City.

Killoran back in squad Elphin man Shane Killoran is back training with the Roscommon senior footballers ahead of the forthcoming league and championship campaign.

Killoran suffered a serious injury in the league game against Fermanagh earlier this year but he has now made a full recovery.

Other players who were out with injuries – such as Ultan Harney, Sean Mullooly, Niall Kilroy and Andy Glennon – are also back training in preparation for the games ahead. Diarmuid and Ciaran Murtagh are also back on the panel.

St Brigid’s and Clann set up derby showdown in Junior Final

King & Moffatt Roscommon JFC ‘A’ semi-final St Brigid’s 3-11 Western Gaels 0-6 St. Brigid’s’ great year continued at a cold Dr. Hyde Park last Sunday when they easily accounted for Western Gaels to reach this year’s junior football final where they will meet old rivals and neighbours Clann na nGael.

With the aid of the very strong wind and rain showers at their backs in the opening half, Brigid’s needed to build up a big lead at the break and it took the Kiltoom side a long time to establish that gap, but they were always in control.

Tom O’Carroll scored a fine goal in the 6th minute to set them on their way. The Gaels battled well, but Brigid’s were working the scoreboard all the time, and with Oisin Reilly (who scored four points) and Eoin Egan especially impressive, they led by 1-8 to 0-1 at the break.

Western Gaels did improve on the restart and three points without reply in the opening nine minutes – from Niall Murray and Stephen Ryan (2) – gave them hope. St. Brigid’s reasserted their superiority with a Ciaran Reilly point. When O’Carroll pulled first-time to the net at the end of the third quarter, the outcome was a formality.

In the 53rd minute Ciaran Reilly finished a fine team move for St. Brigid’s’ third goal before Billy McDonnell and Egan finished the job with late points.

Having won their fifth Roscommon title in a row recently, Kilbride ladies went down to an impressive St. Nathy’s side at Bunninadden last Saturday.

It was a well contested match all through. The Sligo team got the vital breakthrough when Kathleen Coleman scored a goal in the opening half and by then they led by 1-4 to 0-4. Kilbride were soon level after Fiona Tully converted a penalty and at half-time Nathy’s were just a point ahead, 1-5 to 1-4.

St. Nathy’s were proving to be much the better team on the day as the second half went on and once they got their noses in front there was no way back for the Roscommon champions.

Playing against the very stormy wind in the opening half, Pearses provided some stern opposition early on, and for the first 25 minutes they were well in the hunt. Clann did have a goal on the board after 10 minutes when David Connaughton netted after his initial shot hit a post. But with David Grehan, Eanna Ryan and

questions!

So, when’s the final?

That’s the problem – it was meant to be this coming Sunday, but all GAA games have been called off.

Oh…what happens now?

Obviously Roscommon GAA will be anxious to complete the club championships’ schedule by getting this junior final played at a later stage.

A goal and a point before the break changed the complexion of the match. The outstanding Paddy Gavin scored a super goal in the 27th minute, and when equally impressive veteran Johnny Dunning pointed shortly afterwards, Clann went in leading by 2-5 to 0-3.

The second half was a very poor spectacle. Clann defended in numbers and Pearses were unable to break them down. Dunning scored another fine point early on, and when man of the match Gavin crashed home his second goal (in the 50th minute) it was all over.

Strokestown’s minor title triumph Roscommon MFC Division 2 Final Strokestown 2-9 St Ciaran’s 2-6 Strokestown withstood a late rally from St. Ciaran’s to win the Minor Division Two football championship after an excellent final at Dr. Hyde Park on Saturday last.

With Shane McGinley in outstanding form, Strokestown were on top in the opening half, and when Evan Moran bundled in a goal it set them on their way. Then Tommy Gibbons scored an excellent goal to put his side further ahead.

There was a glimmer of hope for St. Ciaran’s late in the half when Mark Dowd converted a penalty, but it was Strokestown who were seven points ahead at the break.

Indeed ‘The Town’ led by 2-9 to 1-3 with only a few minutes left. However, Ciaran’s were not finished yet. Another converted penalty and three unanswered points left only three points in it, but Strokestown had done enough and they deservedly won the title.
