Working from Home and Tax Relief I have worked from home on a full-time basis since March of last year. A friend told me that I might qualify for some tax relief because I work from home. Is this correct?

Many people continue to work from home because of the COVID-19 situation. If you work from home for substantial periods of time on a fulltime or part-time basis then you may be able to claim tax relief against the cost of some home expenses such as electricity, heat and broadbands.

In order to qualify for tax relief, you must work from home for substantial periods of time on a full-time or part-time basis. You are not entitled to claim tax relief if you bring work home from the office outside of normal working hours, for example in the evenings or at weekends.

Your employer is not legally obliged to make a contribution to you in respect of additional electricity, heating or broadband costs incurred.

However, if they choose to do so you may receive up to €3.20 per day from your employer without having to paying any tax, PRSI or USC on it. If your employer pays more than €3.20 per day to cover these expenses, you pay tax, PRSI and USC as normal on the amount above €3.20.

If your employer does not pay you an allowance for your expenses, you may claim for tax relief at the end of the year from Revenue. Your tax refund will be based on the number of days you worked from home and your electricity, heating and broadband costs.

Revenue currently applies a tax relief rate for the cost of running a home office at 10% of the total cost. Therefore, you may apply 10% of the cost of your electricity, heating and broadband costs against your taxes. Keeping copies of utility bills will be important to substantiate your claim.

Roscommon had an off-day against Galway on Sunday with our usually dangerous forwards struggling against difficult elements and tenacious opposition. We look forward to next year! Meanwhile, best of luck to all Roscommon teams still in competition.

Businesses across Roscommon were forced to grin and bear the recent inclement weather as outdoor dining and hospitality continued in the county.

Proprietor of the very popular Les Petites Tartres in Athleague, Anita Bruneteau, says staff and customers are taking it all in their stride, however.

“We have been open for over four weeks and we have been really lucky up until last weekend when the weather changed,” she said.

“But people are still smiling and having fun even through the rain! You have to be positive and I’m lucky to have great staff who haven’t complained at all.

They are really making the best of it”.

The French native, who has been living in Ireland for almost 30 years and who opened Les Petites Tartres seven years ago, has supplied her team with jackets and umbrellas so that they can continue to provide service to up to 60 customers outdoors.

“We have been really busy here since reopening and we are lucky to have such wonderful, loyal customers. People are just glad to be back out socialising and meeting friends and leaving the washing up to somebody else!

“The weather will hopefully improve soon and we are looking forward to the return of indoor dining, but for now, we are grateful to be able to provide an outdoor service for out customers and the wonderful community of Athleague,” she said.

newsbriefs Renewed appeal for information on caravan stolen from Elphin Roscommon Gardaí have renewed their appeal for information relating to the theft of a white Bailey Ranger caravan from Elphin on June 29th.

The six-berth caravan has a distinctive blue stripe from front to back and bears a blue ‘Ranger’ logo on the front and sides. It had been purchased just three weeks previously by the owners.

Anyone who may have seen a caravan matching this description on the roads since June 29th is asked to contact Castlerea Garda Station on 094-9621630.

Castlerea Swimming Pool reopens Castlerea Swimming Pool reopened yesterday morning (Wednesday) and will be available to the public Wednesday to Sunday until 7 pm.

The 33-metre heated pool will operate on a pay as you go basis with entry based on first-come, firstserved. There will be limited use of dressing rooms and swimmers are advised to come ready for the water.

No season tickets will be available for the pool this summer.

Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has said funding for the E-Mental Health Hub in Castlerea must be secured and guaranteed annually to ensure that staff and services are protected.

Deputy Kerrane was speaking this week following confirmation from the HSE that a number of posts for both the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and Psychiatry of Later Life (POLL) services at the facility will be progessed this year.

The HSE recently confirmed that staff including a Consultant Psychiatrist, Senior Psychologist, Sen-

ior Social Worker and Occupational Therapist have been approved for the CAMHS Connect Day Hospital and POLL Day Hospital.

Head of Mental Health Services for Community Healthcare West, Charlie Meehan, confirmed that the Consultant Psychiatrist for CAMHS and nonconsultant hospital doctor were already in place at the CAMHS service and that the Advanced Nurse Practitioner and social worker had start dates at the end of summer. Recruitment for the remaining posts is expected to start immediately.

Deputy Kerrane said: “It was hugely disappointing

to learn that no funding had been allocated to the eMental Health Hub in Castlerea, a small amount of funding was made available in 2019 but this did not continue into 2020 - this can never happen again.

“I welcome after first highlighting that the services were not in fact being funded that funding has now been made available.

“I had asked many questions about the e-Mental Health Hub and its staffing levels and services available. It shouldn’t have taken this in order to get the service funded”.

The Roscommon Galway TD said it was important that funding is now secured each year for the facility.

“Funding for the EMental Health Hub must be secured annually and I will be pushing this with the HSE. “I do not want to see half-

way through next year, funding being scrambled together to fund such critical services in our community. This is not acceptable,” she said.

Race against time to get the public vaccinated – Naughten Independent TD Denis Naughten has said Ireland is in a “race against time” to get as many people vaccinated as possible before there is a significant outbreak of the Delta variant of the Covid-19 virus.

The Roscommon Galway TD urged members of the public to avail of vaccinations as 39 local pharmacies began administering the Janssen one-shot Covid-19 vaccine free of charge to people aged 18 to 34 and those over the age of 50 from

Monday last.

“Pharmacies across Roscommon and Galway, in Ballaghaderreen, Ballinasloe, Ballygar, Castlerea, Cortober, Dunmore, Monksland, Mountbellew, Roscommon and Strokestown are now taking appointments for vaccination. On top of this, the local adjoining towns of Athlone, Ballyhaunis, Carrick-onShannon, Drumshanbo, Kilkelly, Lanesboro, Loughrea and Tuam also have pharmacies offering vac-

cination,” he said.

“We are now in a race against time to try to get as many people vaccinated as possible before there is a significant outbreak of the Delta variant of the Covid-19 virus.

“We have already seen that the reopening of our economy has been stalled due to the Delta variant, and it is important that as many people as possible avail of vaccination here as soon as it becomes available to them”.

Site identified for new St. Teresa’s Special School < DAN DOONER

The Department of Education has confirmed that a new permanent site at Parkmore, Creagh has been identified for St. Teresa’s Special School in Ballinasloe.

The Department has reached an agreement in principle with the HSE on a four-acre site for the provision of permanent accommodation for the school.

School principal, Anita O’Reilly, said it was a “brilliant day” for the school community.

“This is a brilliant day for the children and parents of children with complex needs in the region of east Galway and south Roscommon,” she said.

“St. Teresa’s Special

School has grown steadily over the years. We need a new school to give our students the education they deserve. Our board of management, staff, parents and friends who have supported us every step of the way will be so pleased with the announcement.

We all need to press on now and make this school a reality”.

Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan said the announcement was a “tribute to the commitment and vision” of principal Anita O’Reilly, vice-principal Geraldine Clarke, the board of management, staff and parents.

“It will mean a permanent special school in our area and this is just the first step towards a new school over the next number of years,” she said.

“In total there will be 36 students starting this September (which is evidence of the school’s growth) having started with eleven students nearly a decade ago. The school is at capacity and really was in dire need of more space for children.

“We are so fortunate to have St. Teresa’s Special School here in Ballinasloe for children with complex needs as there are only 126 such schools in the country”.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy also welcomed the news this week.

“This is most welcome, and I am glad to have been able to assist in achieving this goal. I am absolutely delighted for the students, staff and school principal Anita O’Reilly, who has

long highlighted the need for additional accommodation for the school,” he said.

Senator Murphy recently met with school principal Anita O’ Reilly and Deputy Principal Geraldine Clarke.

“I have long campaigned and highlighted the lack of space in St. Teresa’s Special School. The school caters for children with moderate to profound special needs and they have over thirty students at the moment. I have been in touch with Minister Foley on numerous occasions in relation to this matter and it is fantastic that a permanent four-acre site has now been agreed. We now need to see a timely progression of the new building,” he concluded.

Tidy Towns group slams Ballyleague littering

Concern as Covid cases rise in Roscommon

There has been growing concern in Roscommon due to a recent rise in the number of Covid-19 cases which has led to the temporary closure of a number of local businesses and facilities.

In response to heightened fears over the rising number of cases associated with the Delta variant of the virus, a walk-in test

centre was in operation in Roscommon town this week.

On Wednesday, the HSE confirmed that there had been a total of 239 tests carried out at the facility, which was located at Roscommon Arts Centre on Monday and Tuesday.

The HSE said that 75 people turned up to be tested within the first two hours of the centre being open on Monday.

The ‘pop-up’ centre was set up by Community Healthcare West in response to the recent increase in Covid-19 cases in the county.

It followed HSE confirmation that between June 16th and June 29th, Roscommon recorded 100 cases of the virus, giving the county a 14-day incidence rate of 154.9, which was the fourth highest in the country behind Don-

egal, Waterford and Sligo Meanwhile it has also been confirmed that an average of 150 people a day made use of the drive-in facility at Castlerea.

Head of Community Care in Roscommon and Galway, Breda CrehanRoche said the HSE was “very concerned” about the growth of the virus in the county and had called on members of the public to get tested.

Ballyleague Tidy Towns group has slammed recent incidents of littering near to the local marina, and said some members of the community have shown “scant regard” for their efforts to keep the area clean.

In a statement to the Roscommon People this week, the group said: “Despite the Trojan efforts of our Tidy Towns volunteers in endeavoring to keep the area, and most notably the marina area clean and welcoming for visitors and locals alike, there are some in the community or beyond who show scant regard for our efforts. They bring their grass cuttings and dump them at this site instead of emptying their bags and removing them.

“Furthermore, the compound is not for public use but its intended purpose of just being used for grass cuttings from the marina area is been abused to such an extent that the local Tidy Towns committee are evaluating the benefit of the composter, as it appears as per the picture attached to be Recent littering close to the marina in a magnet for litter”.

Fitzmaurice calls for more progress on driving test backlog Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice has said that more progress needs to be made on the clearing of the backlog for people waiting on driving tests.

“Every week we have young people or their parents contacting our office who are frustrated at receiving yet another email notification that their test date has been pushed back until August or September.

“It’s estimated that there 120,000 learners waiting on theory tests and over

70,000 people waiting on a full driving test.

“We were previously told that the number of driver theory tests would be stretched to 50,000 a month to clear the backlog, but there is no indication of that happening at present.

“While we await the arrival of new testers, we must be prepared to extend opening hours and open all of the test centers full time to get through the backlog”.

Friday Publicans and restaurant owners have been hit so hard by this wretched pandemic. Many times in this column I’ve expressed solidarity with them, a sentiment which I’m sure is shared by our thousands of readers.

Not only have they not been able to reopen indoors, they’ve been tormented by the saga of date changes. It really is the hope that kills you. And many of those business people who have some outdoor hospitality option have had to somehow muster the enthusiasm and finance to make the required investment.

A number of premises’ countywide have – despite the unpredictability facing their industry, the chronic loss of income over 16 months, and the erratic Irish summer weather – bravely taken the plunge and reopened outdoors.

I am aware of numerous venues that have been creative and courageous in providing safe and welcoming facilities. They are all to be commended and hopefully they will be well supported at this deeply challenging time for the hospitality industry.

Tonight we had a few drinks at Paddy Finn’s (Kilteevan), where proprietor Claudia has excellent outdoor facilities in place.

There was a nice crowd of locals presents, all socialising in safe conditions. It was a reminder of times past, and very enjoyable!

Saturday As a player, Rio Ferdinand was a star for ‘United’. Then he left Leeds and joined another ‘United’ (Manchester). He’s a nice guy too, but Rio’s getting very, very confident/arrogant about England’s Euro 2020 chances!

Tonight, England qualified for the semi-finals of the Euros with a very comfortable 4-0 win over Ukraine. Rio (one of the BBC’s pundits) is falling into the potential trap of getting much too cocky (Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker looking on warily). England were quite impressive against a limited Ukraine team.

I feel myself effortlessly moving into ‘supporting England mode’. I assume that annoying radio DJs are still lazily asking Irish people to text in and say whether or not they can find it in their hearts to support ‘the auld enemy’.

It is of course a tricky one for Irish people. There have certainly been times in the past when I’ve enjoyed England’s sporting discomfort. It’s somewhere in our DNA. But is it mature? They are our neighbours. The English players are a nice bunch. The Brits appear to support our sportstars (granted they try to claim some of them too). The vast majority of the English fans are the finest of people, and I certainly don’t begrudge them their run in the Euros. Some in the English media, retired footballers who are now pundits included, can however be very arrogant and overconfident.

On Wednesday, England face Denmark in the second semi-final. Personally, I’d like to see our neighbours reach the final. (To be continued!).

Sunday A confession: I watched about ten minutes of the RTE ‘debate’ on Thurs-

day’s Dublin Bay South by-election.

Halfway through those ten minutes (and already wilting), I actually browsed the channels, and almost stopped on a repeat of a repeat of Mrs Brown’s Boys. Instead (and I’m not proud of it), I returned to The Week In Politics for another five minutes.

There were about eight candidates surrounding presenter Áine Lawlor. I actually listened to three or four of the candidates earnestly rattling off what they reckon should be done to solve the housing crisis. Then, presenter Áine looked directly at me – solemnfaced and with no warning to any children who might be accidentally looking in – and announced that there would be more questions after the ad break, with even more candidates.

I am probably doing a disservice to Áine. The way she looked directly at me may have been a coded warning… that there was more of this tedious non-debate to come. The dog and I looked at one another, and before the first ad had come on, we’d both scarpered.

Still, it was an error of judgement on my part to have exposed myself to even ten minutes of a ‘debate’ on a byelection. I can only sincerely apologise

to both myself and to my loyal readers for this uncharacteristic lapse. While I can’t speak for her, I must say our dog looks suitably embarrassed too.

Later on Sunday Watching Roscommon v Galway was a very, very frustrating experience.

Galway deserved their win. Our ‘all men behind the ball’ approach was reasonably effective but awful to watch. When we broke upfield, most of our key shooters were not at their best. We stayed in touch with Galway for much of the match, but the visitors nudged a few in front, and then a messy second goal ended our hopes of a late comeback. It was a muted end to a very disappointing season.

Monday Across the water, dramatic news as Boris declares he’s had enough.

Or words to that effect. England will effectively scrap lockdown on July 19th. You never know what to expect from Boris. Flanked by an apprehensive looking Chief Medical Officer (Professor Chris Whitty) and an equally sombre Chief Scientist (Sir

Patrick Valance), Boris confirmed at a news conference that the leaks to the media were spot on…

England was going for broke.

Professor Chris and Sir Patrick looked like quiet schoolboys who had been talked into a revolt by the class extrovert.

It was quite a shock to hear the UK Prime Minister unveiling his latest plan. No more social distancing from July 19th. Face coverings will no longer be mandatory. All businesses can reopen. Crowds will be able to attend sporting events, concerts, etc. Nightclubs will reopen. Attendance limits will be lifted for funerals, weddings, etc. The guidance on working from home will no longer apply. And on and on and on…

Professor Chris and Sir Patrick were pretty solemn, as well they might be. Infection levels in the UK are soaring, mainly due to the Delta variant. Of course the vaccination roll-out is very successful. Also, Boris argues that as it’s summer, and with vaccination going so well, now is the time to try and live with Covid-19, to rely on people exercising personal responsibility. But he did not rule out a return of lockdown in the autumn (depending on the prevailing circumstances).

It’s a big gamble by Boris, and a sharp contrast with our very cautious approach in the Republic of Ireland.

Tuesday In Euro 2020, Italy beat Spain on penalties in the first semi-final (after a 1-1 draw). This is an excellent Italian side. They will almost certainly start favourites against Denmark or England in the final (result of second semi-final not known as we go to press). The final is this Sunday. There is no confirmation yet on how many official days of mourning will follow for soon-to-be bereft soccer fans...

Wednesday (7.30 pm) I’m going home to see if football’s coming home...(Rio and I will make our views known in due course).

Roscommon Playful Communities Playday 2021 All online events are still available on Roscommon County Childcare Committee CLG Facebook page #PlayfulCommunities #PlayDay Roscommon County Council Roscommon County Childcare Committee, in conjunction with Roscommon County Council, hosted Roscommon Playful Communities Playday 2021 on July 3rd, 2021.

Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, Councillor Joe Murphy, officially opened the Playday. In his opening address, Cathaoirleach Joe Murphy stated: “Promoting play and recreation activities is paramount to the wellbeing of children and young people”.

There were several online workshops on the day, including music, art and crafts, a scavenger hunt, storytelling, GAA, and FAI skills – including ladies GAA. The workshops were fit for different age groups, and there were cushion covers, backpacks, kids’ music, and movement and mindfulness for teenagers available.

There was a lot of interest in the online workshops and activities, with approximately 2000 views online on the day. The events remain online, allowing people to access them at their own leisure. This is the second online Playday to take place due to Covid-19 social distancing measures.

Local agencies and a number of private tutors provided the content for the online workshops/ activities.

In her closing comments, Irene Cafferky (Manager of Roscommon County Childcare Committee) said the purpose of the Playday was to raise awareness of the importance of play in a child’s

life and overall development. She thanked everyone involved and the local agencies for supporting the implementation of County Roscommon Play policy.

Many Playday play packs were compiled as part of this initiative. These play packs are to encourage participation in creative/active play. As part of this multi-agency collaboration, play packs were distributed by the Family Resource Centres in Roscommon Town, Castlerea, Boyle and Ballaghaderreen. Roscommon CCC delivered several play packs to The Emergency Relocation Orientation Centre in Ballaghaderreen and to RIDC as the traveller liaison service. Approximately 320 packs were distributed through the above avenues, and a further 75 play packs will be distributed through childcare services in Roscommon.

8 Broadband Connection Points

in County Roscommon as part of the Department of Rural & Community Development’s Connected Communities plan Broadband Connection Points (BCPs) are public locations which have been selected to bring high-speed connectivity to rural areas in advance of the National Broadband Plan rollout.

BCP locations have been selected by the local authorities and include public areas such as community halls, libraries, sports facilities, enterprise hubs, tourist locations and other public spaces. Each BCP will have up to 150Mb high-speed Vodafone broadband, with indoor and outdoor WiFi access for the local community. This will enable people living in the area, visitors or tourists to go to their local BCP for any kind of personal or business use that will require online connectivity.

Each BCP facility has been fitted with furniture and desks to facilitate remote working, studying, online classes/courses and many more activities that will benefit from a secure high speed broadband connection.

New footpath and lighting in Roscommon town welcomed The provision of a new footpath and lighting on the road between Hannon’s Hotel and Roscommon Golf Club has moved a step closer this week with news that a consultant has been appointed by Roscommon County Council to design and cost the project.

Independent Councillor Tony Waldron welcomed the news this week.

“This footpath and lighting is badly needed on this road which is used by dozens of people out walking every day. A couple of local residents have contacted me about near misses on the road in recent weeks and it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident if this facility is not provided,” he said.

“I first raised this matter over two years ago and I am glad that the council is moving the matter on. I would be hopeful that funding would be provided in next year’s estimates and that the work could be carried out as soon as possible as it’s a serious road safety matter.

“I will be following up on this issue with Roscommon County Council and I am confident that we will see work carried out on this project soon,” he concluded.

‘Rally for Life’ in Roscommon town

The Roscommon Pro-Life Group assembled in Roscommon town on Saturday last (July 3rd) as part of the National Rally for Life, which organisers say was aimed at highlighting “the 13,243 Irish abortions which took place in 2019 and 2020, since abortion legislation was introduced”.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, rallies took place at 55 separate locations in lieu of the national pro-life march.

Organisers say that there have been twice as many abortions in Ireland in the two years since legislation was introduced, as there had been the previous two years.

Model lifeboat and painting presented to Lough Ree RNLI Lough Ree RNLI volunteer crew were the recipients of a number of personalised gifts from a great supporter at a presentation on Sunday afternoon last.

Limerick man, Mark Conway (43), visited Athlone with his friend Tommy Corbett and key worker Ivana Kottesova. The creative artist, who honed his skills with the Brothers of Charity in Limerick, contacted then Operations Manager, Tony McCarth,

earlier this year to offer the replica as a gift to the charity.

At a special ceremony at the Lough Ree RNLI boathouse at Coosan Point, Mr. Conway met Tony McCarth, Operations Manager Jude Kilmartin, Treasurer Vincent Rafter and members of the crew and their families, where he presented them with the metrelong model of a lifeboat.

During the visit Mark had another surprise in store when he also

presented a painting of a lifeboat which was also his own work.

A great supporter of the RNLI, Mr. Conway’s key worker Ivana Kottesova said: “Mark has already made presentations to the RNLI at Lough Derg, Kilrush, Courtmacsharry, and Kinsale and hopes eventually to visit all RNLI lifeboat stations on the island”.

Lough Ree RNLI Operations Manager Jude Kilmartin expressed the charity’s gratitude

for the presentation and said he “looked forward to displaying the art in a place of prominence in the new RNLI boathouse”, which is on schedule for completion later this year.

During the weekend trip to Athlone, the Limerick visitors were guests of Viking Boat Tours for an afternoon on the River Shannon and Lough Ree which they thoroughly enjoyed.

Tremane GAA receives Texaco ‘Support For Sport’ funding Roscommon County winners in the recent Texaco ‘Support for Sport’ initiative, Tremane GAA Club, has been presented with a cheque for €5,000, which will be used to further develop the club’s grounds and interim clubhouse.

One of almost 400 clubs countrywide to make application under the scheme, Tremane GAA Club is a small but progressive club, committed to spreading ‘the majesty of hurling’ to the community and county of Roscommon.

Located in the parish of Athleague and Knockcroghery, it has a proud 75-year history and was the first non-Galway club to win the Connacht Senior Club Hurling Championship in 1977.

The presentation was made to the Club by Valero Energy (Ireland) Limited – the company that markets fuel in Ireland under the Texaco brand. Entries to the Texaco Support for Sport 2021 initiative will open this autumn.

‘Lotto luck’ out west!

The National Lottery has confirmed that the €6,489,165 Lotto jackpot winner from May 22nd has come forward. The winning ticket was purchased at the Applegreen Service Station at the Arcadia Retail Park in Athlone.

A spokesperson said: “We are delighted to confirm that the Lotto winner who scooped the €6.4 million jackpot on Saturday, May 22nd has made contact with our prize claims team. We are now in the process of making arrangements for the jackpot prize to be paid”.

On June 5th, an online player in Galway won the €2,475,303 jackpot to make it three consecutive jackpot wins over the course of three weekends.

Meanwhile, Lotto players in Ballinasloe are being urged to check their tickets after one player came within one number of claiming the €4,420,184 prize in the draw on Wednesday, June 30th. The ticket matched five numbers and the bonus to win €40,667 and was purchased at Ashtree Stores in Cleaghmore, Ballinasloe on Monday, June 26th.

The National Lottery spokesperson said: “We are encouraging all of our Lotto players in Galway to check their tickets carefully today, as one lucky ticket holder has a ticket worth €40,667.

SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION In commissioning the Apostles in today’s Gospel, Jesus gives them, and us, a preview of His Church’s mission after the Resurrection.

His instructions to the Twelve echo those of God to the twelve tribes of Israel on the eve of their exodus from Egypt. The Israelites likewise were sent out with no bread and only one set of clothes, wearing sandals and carrying a staff (see Exodus 12:11; Deuteronomy 8:2–4). Like the Israelites, the Apostles are to rely solely on the providence of God and His grace.

Perhaps, also, Mark wants us to see the Apostles’ mission, the mission of the Church, as that of leading a new exodus - delivering people from their exile from God and bringing them to the promised land, the kingdom of heaven.

Like Amos in today’s First Reading, the Apostles are not “professionals” who earn their bread by prophesying. Like Amos, they are simply men (see Acts 14:15) summoned from their ordinary jobs and sent by God to be shepherds of their brothers and sisters.

Again this week, we hear the theme of rejection: Amos experiences it, and Jesus warns the Apostles that some will not welcome or listen to them. The Church is called not necessarily to be successful but only to be faithful to God’s command. With authority and power given to her by Jesus, the Church proclaims God’s peace and salvation to those who believe in Him, as we sing in today’s Psalm.

This word of truth, this Gospel of salvation, is addressed to each of us, personally, as Paul proclaims in today’s Epistle.

In the mystery of God’s will, we have been chosen from before the foundation of the world - to be His sons and daughters, to live for the praise of His glory.

Let us, then, give thanks for the Church today, and for the spiritual blessings He has bestowed upon us. Let us resolve to further the Church’s mission - to help others hear the call to repentance and welcome Christ into their lives.

Lough Ree RNLI assist 25 people on stranded cruisers Last week, Lough Ree RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew assisted a total of 25 people on stranded cruisers with 11 people rescued from one cruiser alone last Friday.

The charity lifeboat responded to a call from the Irish Coast Guard at 8.30 am on Friday morning last. Under helm, Emmet Devereux, the crew reached

the stricken vessel which had run aground north of Inch Turk Island. The cruiser was towed to safe water with eleven people on board.

On Sunday, June 27th the crew had rescued four people from a cruiser which had been stranded on the Hexagon Shoal near Hare Island.

On Tuesday, June 29th, the Lough Ree lifeboat ‘Tara Scougall’ came to the aid of nine people on board a vessel which had run aground just off Hare Island.

Minutes later, the crew was back on the water, this time coming to the assistance of a 34-foot cruiser which had lost power off Carberry Island.

Tributes to the late Ray Fallon are still pouring in following the recent passing of one of the county’s best-known and well-liked GAA personalities.

With Tremane, Ray won numerous county senior titles and with Roscommon he was part of the team that won the Junior All-Ireland in 1966 and was captain of the Roscommon Jun-

iors when they won again in 1974.

When his playing career finished, Ray served many roles in GAA administration including the chairmanship of Coiste Iomána and he was also a well-respected referee. He was also involved in ladies football and was heavily involved in the Clann na nGael club after he moved to the area. Indeed he won the Clann ‘club person of the year’ award on no less than three occasions.

Ray was always a lovely man to meet; he

loved the craic and banter and was a great GAA man. He loved nothing better than to follow Roscommon at all grades of football, hurling, ladies football and camogie.

It’s Monday morning and on the face of it, everything seems to be coming back to normal. Crowds are returning to sporting fixtures, the sporting fixtures themselves are actually being

played, and most importantly, from today on, the vaccination programme is rolled out to the younger members of our society.

Yet, this horrible Covid pandemic is just now having its biggest and most profound effect on us as a family – once again, the awful restrictions on hospital visits are causing us large amounts of anguish and pain.

I told you a few months ago that Carol and I have become grandparents to our first grandchild Riley, but things haven’t gone smoothly for her, or her mother Lisa, in the meantime.

Both of them have spent quite some time in hospitals, obviously without visitations from any family members except Lisa’s husband, Brian.

Last Thursday, Riley underwent pretty major surgery in Temple Street Children’s Hospital, and Covid regulations mean that not only can family members not visit her, but remarkably, her two parents cannot be in the room with her at the same time.

Now, I am aware that regulations and protocols have to be followed, but as both of them are fully vaccinated, I find it hard to understand why

Sophie’s murder is back in focus One of the strangest and most talked about murder cases in this country was the brutal killing of Frenchwoman Sophie Toscan Du Plantier, which occurred twenty-five years ago in the beautiful rural setting of Toormore outside Schull in County Cork.

For the last while, I have been glued to Jim Sheridan’s five-part documentary, ‘Murder at the Cottage’, which digs deep into the entire terrible saga. Another documentary on the killing – ‘A Murder in West Cork’ – has also just featured on Netflix, and so, after quarter of a century, the still unsolved murder is once again back in the public eye. Of course, the big question still remains: who killed Sophie?

I have yet to see the Netflix offering, which I’ve been told points the finger squarely at former local journalist and An Garda Síochána’s prime suspect Ian Bailey, but the Jim Sheridan programme does not go down the same

route. The documentary is riveting viewing, and throws up lots of interesting questions.

It also shows that while having never been charged with the murder, and with seemingly little evidence against him, Ian Bailey has served a sentence albeit not one confined to a prison cell, that has been every bit as hard as if he had been convicted in a court of law.

Rightly or wrongly, he has had his life totally ruined by the events of Christmas 1996.

Sheridan admits that after extensive research into the case, which took several years, he still does not know who did it, but maybe, with all the new interest in the case, some new evidence may be found to finally convict or exonerate Ian Bailey.

For everyone’s sake, but especially the still grieving family of Sophie, it would be a blessing, and bring some closure to this enthralling story.

one has to go out of the room when the other comes in. The funny thing is that the three of them, Riley included, could go to Tesco or Aldi or any other supermarket together last week, but as soon as Riley went in for her operation, that all changed and only one was allowed to be with her.

Anyway, hopefully things are beginning to get sorted. Please God, Riley will soon be let home soon and we can go and see her.

However, of all the damage the Covid-19 pandemic has done to us as a society, I believe the impact it has had

on families who couldn’t visit loved ones in hospitals and nursing homes was the worst – particularly in cases where people passed away. It has to have been hugely traumatic and I feel some people may never get over its effects.

Some weeks ago, I told you of having met a woman who’d not been able to see her husband for a month while he was in hospital, and having now experienced it ourselves, I feel I truthfully underestimated the devastating effect it must’ve had on her – but I certainly know now.

Tribesmen triumphant but it’s not the same!

On Sunday, we had another meeting of Galway and Roscommon in the Connacht Senior Football Championship. While the ‘maroon and white’ prevailed, I have to admit that I didn’t have the usual euphoric feeling of putting one over the Rossies.

Admittedly, the weather conditions were atrocious, and I’ve no doubt that Seamus Duke will have a detailed report and analysis of the game elsewhere in the paper, but I honestly thought it was a very poor game – neither team played to their potential, and were very defensive in their approach.

Some years ago, Pat Spillane was hugely unpopular in the North (maybe he still is) for labelling the defensive tactics of most Northern teams as “Puke football”, but most genuine football supporters thought he was right. Thankfully, in the last few years things changed quite a bit, and teams have started to attack at pace again. We began to see higher scores being recorded in many county games.

Sadly, on Sunday we saw both teams revert to defensive mode, and while the knockout element and the weather may have played a part in that, the end result was a game that very few people will want to remember.

For Roscommon, it was a sad end to a dismal enough year. At least Galway have a Connacht final to look forward to, and while Mayo (if they overcome Leitrim) will be overwhelming favourites I wouldn’t write the Galway men off.

Once upon a time the craic in our border village would be ninety on the evening of a local derby, and, win or lose, the slagging and banter would be brilliant. For supporters of the losing team, it could be a tough night – however pride alone would mean that if you lost, it was vital to turn up, face the music, and not be accused later of hiding away.

Somehow, while both sides were well represented in the village on Sunday night, it wasn’t the same, and there was no real triumphalism dis-

played by the Galway side. While the craic was good, nobody rubbed it in.

The good news for Roscommon followers is that Gerry Keegan, our own Creggs clubman and Assistant Secretary of the County Board, promised me last night that things will be different next year, and in his words, Roscommon fans can look forward to some swashbuckling football – if that doesn’t happen, you can blame Gerry!

Finally for this week …

One of my sources (not a very reliable one) tells me he has a major international scoop especially for the Roscommon People – apparently the famous Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking festival may not take place this year. If so, then the little Spanish resort of Cabo Roig is preparing to step in and hold it, and they expect to have the uncrowned King of Lisdoonvarna, Willy Daly, in attendance to give it his blessing.

We have been to Cabo Roig a few times over the years; it is a very popular spot for Irish folk, and we have met several well-known Rossies there on different occasions. But now is the chance for lovelorn readers of the People to hit for the Costa Blanca and find love in the sun.

Get flights to either Alicante or Murcia, bring your Covid Cert, pension book, suntan lotion, bikini, sunglasses, and most importantly your dancing shoes, and then sit back and wait for romance to strike.

If it does, remember you saw it first in the Roscommon People, and if you see me on the lively Cabo Roig strip, you can buy me a nice pint of Guinness – you can take the man out of the bog, but you can’t take the bog out of the man!

‘Decade of Centenaries’ events in county this Sunday Minister to attend Castlerea event, where feared RIC Sergeant was assassinated on first morning of Truce < ALANNAH HEALY

This Sunday, July 11th, marks the Centenary of the Truce which brought an end to the Irish War of Independence.

To commemorate this milestone, a proclamation stone will be unveiled at the courthouse in Castlerea. The stone will be unveiled by Colonel Kevin Campion, and Minister Jack Chambers and Councillor Joe Murphy, Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, will also be in attendance.

Castlerea has particular significance in relation to the hours just prior to the

Truce taking effect. RIC Sergeant James King of the Castlerea garrison was shot dead less than two hours before the Truce came into effect at noon on July 11th, 1921.

This weekend’s commemorative events locally will begin at 1.20 pm with the laying of a wreath at the memorial in Tarmon.

At 2 pm in Ballinlough, the commemoration and unveiling of a plaque will take place in the square.

Following this, there will be the laying of a wreath at the memorial in St. Brigid’s Church, Cloonbonniffe at 2.45 pm, and the laying of a wreath at the

The ceremonies in Castlerea will begin at 4 pm at the courthouse. The Proclamation of the Irish Republic will be recited

by Colonel Campion, the original flag of the South Roscommon Brigade will be raised by a flag officer, a replica of the 1916 Proclamation will be unveiled and there will be an address by Minister Jack Chambers.

Music for the event will be courtesy of the Castlerea Brass & Reed Band.

Vintage cars present on the day will be provided

by Roscommon Sports and Classic Car Club. The events will be livestreamed on castlerea.ie, and all social distancing guidelines will be adhered to.

Castlerea was home to many significant historical events over the course of the Irish War of Independence. One such event was the assassination of RIC Sergeant James King of the Castlerea garrison, whose death occurred mere hours before the Truce came into effect at noon on July 11th, 1921.

King was a native of County Clare, but after be-

ing promoted to the rank of Sergeant in the RIC, he lived and worked in Castlerea for eight years.

During his time in the town, King garnered a reputation for ruthlessness, and had become a muchfeared individual in the locality. His involvement as leader of the infamous Castlerea Murder Gang had led to a number of brutal murders in the area, and he became a prime target for the IRA. On the morning of the Truce, King had left his house on Patrick’s Street and was heading towards the local RIC Barracks when IRA members Thomas Crawley and Ned Campion, who had been waiting for him to emerge from a nearby shop, opened fire. King was struck, and died immediately. The two men fled the scene, eventually finding safety by pretending to be sheepherders in a field on the Williamstown road.

King’s death occurred at approximately 10.30 am that morning, less than two hours before the Truce came into effect, making him one of the last casualties (or the last) of the two and a half year conflict.

Plenty of summer activity along Suck Valley Way! < DAN DOONER

There was more good news along the Suck Valley Way last week when the local committee took ownership of its new water sports equipment.

After receiving €8,000 in funding through the National Lottery Health and Wellbeing fund, the Suck Valley Way Committee secured 13 new kayaks, including eleven single and two double along with state-of-the-art safety equipment to be used by visitors to the amenity.

Local Independent councillor and Chairperson of the Suck Valley Way Committee, Anthony Waldron, said it was exciting news for the region.

“The equipment has been registered with Canoe Ireland and this weekend six people will take part in an intensive

training course.

“The new kayaks will offer visitors to the area the opportunity to navigate the River Suck from Ballintubber as far as the Offaly border. This is good news for the development of the Suck Valley Way and also for towns and villages located along the river,” he said.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that a new event, The Suck Valley Way Cycle, will be launched on Sunday, August 22nd from 9.30 am.

The cycle will take place from Cloonfad to Ballygare (approximately 65kms) with funds going towards two local charities, Mayo Roscommon Hospice and Jacinta’s Smile.

Cycling clubs and individual cyclists are invited to register by contacting Anthony Waldron, Chair-

man of the Suck Valley Way Cycle Committee on 086-7866774. Registration costs €25.

Cllr. Anthony Waldron said the cycle is planned to be an annual event and that participants would find the route both challenging and enjoyable.

CEO of Mayo Roscommon Hospice, Martina Jennings said: “Events like these have been incredibly important in helping us fund vital services in the community.

It is fitting also that this event is in its initiation as we near the completion of our 8-bed specialist palliative care Roscommon Hospice”.

Katie-Anne O’Toole of Jacinta’s Smile, the children’s bereavement charity, said those involved with the local cause were “thrilled to be one of the beneficiaries”.

The risks and responsibilities of vaccinating your child!

A decision to offer children as young as twelve a Covid vaccine has caused concern among many readers who are also parents.

While young children and teenagers have, in medical terms, been spared the worst of this virus – and I do understand that psychologically, they have, like the rest of us, had a difficult time – this latest development has caused a bit of a divide among parents. Some are delighted the vaccine will be available to their little darlings. Others are very wary.

I personally find the latter to be totally understandable.

When my first-born arrived six weeks prematurely, she was not only tiny; she had chronic asthma, meaning she had a compromised immune and respiratory system. It was left to me, her eighteen-yearold mammy, (her dad, my former husband, chose to opt out of major decisions), to decide whether or not to have her vaccinated against

whooping cough.

During the 70s and 80s, few subjects around infant and child healthcare caused the amount of controversy and concern as that which surrounded the then whooping cough vaccine. Back then, in rare cases, it was alleged that following immunisation, some babies developed what were described as ‘neurological conditions’ that were thought to have left them with ‘permanent neurological’ ailments.

Again, this was rare, but it was a major concern for me as a young, inexperienced mother who had no support mechanism.

I spoke with our family doctor who advised me to have my tiny asthmatic baby (who was highly susceptible to contracting whooping cough) vaccinated. However, I had to weigh up the risks of possible neurological damage to my child versus the dangers that whooping cough, should she get it, could do

to her little lungs. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make as a mother, and, while I chose to go ahead with all of her other childhood vaccinations, I made it clear she was not having the whooping cough (Pertussis) one.

I did everything in my power to keep my baby safe, and she was placed on a cocktail of medication to deal with her asthma. However, terrifyingly, when she was fiveyears-old, she contracted whooping cough. One day, when we were both home alone, during a coughing attack my baby girl suddenly collapsed in my arms and stopped breathing.

As a panicked 23-year-old with no phone, I somehow got the emotional and physical strength to remain focused and perform CPR on her, even dislodging a lump of mucus blocking her lungs. I got her breathing again, wrapped her in a blanket, bundled her into the passenger seat

of my Renault 5 banger and took off like a getaway driver into Dublin’s Temple Street Hospital.

This happened in 1987, during the non-consultant hospital doctors’ strike, meaning when I arrived screaming, there was no doctor available in the emergency department! Mercifully, a consultant called Mr. Haq saw me racing through the doors with my gravely ill baby in my arms. He snatched her and ran to a cubicle leaving me on my knees hysterical. Mr. Haq told me my quick actions saved my child’s life, however, to this day I remain convinced my decision not to vaccinate her against whooping cough had resulted in her nearly dying.

Why am I telling you this? I know what it’s like for parents to have to make a decision for their child regarding a controversial vaccine, and I don’t envy them one bit.

I believe there’s no such thing as the ‘perfect’ family, which is why I needed help rolling my eyes back into the forward-facing position when I heard ‘Loose Women’ panellist Stacey Solomon’s shrill announcement (and relief) that she was, after four sons, ‘finally’ pregnant with a girl.

You see, according to Closer magazine, before the big gender reveal, Stacey had reportedly said: “I know there’s a risk it’ll be another boy though.

If it’s not a girl – we’ll try again after”. Wow…’a risk’ that the child will be a boy! ‘A risk’ that the world will be populated by another member of the male species!

When I decided to stop having children following the birth of my two beautiful daughters, I was plagued by nosey parkers telling me ‘oh, you’ll have to go again’, bold-as-brass, hammering home the phrase ‘a gentleman’s family’ – meaning I ‘needed a boy’ to seal my place as a good ‘Catholic’ mother.

Indeed, by not producing the obligatory ‘son and heir’, it was as if I was an underachieving idiot weighed down by my dodgy reproductive organs.

When I announced I was having my tubes tied, a former sister-in-law lectured me for denying myself (and her brother) the chance to reach the pinnacle of my reproductive years and ‘produce a boy or two’ like her fabulous herself!

Having ‘one of each’ or ‘a pigeon pair’ is not, nor should it ever be, a parent’s ultimate goal. I know that gender disappointment is an officially recognised medical syndrome, but for me, having a baby was a glorious, miraculous lucky dip; a chance to be blessed with two precious humans I could love and cherish all the way to the moon and back.

Congratulations Stacey, I wish you and your ‘perfect’ family every happiness.

By the way, my baby girl is fine.

She’s the mother of my beautiful grandchild and is awaiting the arrival of my second grandchild. Her sister arrived eleven years later, and by then, as it had been found that there was no evidence supporting an increased risk of adverse effects to children from the whooping cough vaccine – i.e. it’s completely safe – she received her jab.

The moral of the story? When it comes to vaccinating your child, compromise is not necessarily a choice…they either get the jab or they don’t. However, in the case of a 12 to 15-year-old, I’d advise that both parents (not just one) should make the decision alongside their child, after all, as they’re the ones considering a vaccination, their opinion should count.

Why I’ve got no sympathy for a ‘reformed’ drug mule!

Revealing she ‘snorted cocaine off a table in McDonald’s’ may make some people think drug mule Michaella McCollum’s got street cred. But in my eyes, this little madam – along with her accomplice Melissa Reid – is, and always will be, a convicted drug smuggler.

When I read the tagline to promote the reformed bad-girl’s BBC documentary ‘High: Confessions of an Ibiza Drug Mule’, where she describes her ordeal, or as she calls it, her ‘journey’ from convicted trafficker to retired nun (my words, not hers), I laughed out loud.

I’d love to know who’s in charge of this former jailbird’s publicity, because fair play to them, they’ve singlehandedly managed to market what was, let’s be honest, a greedy, profit-making, callous, public-enemy-number-one drug mule into Mother Teresa.

Indeed, when Michaella, giving us a delicate flutter of lashes to show her (ahem) remorse, suggested that viewers “might wonder how a regular kid from Northern Ireland ended up here,” my reaction was one of rumpled perplexity!

Why? Because being honest, I couldn’t find it in my heart to give a fiddlers about this smug cat-who-licked-the-cream ‘reformed’ drug trafficker; oh but of course I do wish Ms. McCollum and her fellow smuggler the very best!

IFA calls for TAMS Costings Review to be concluded urgently IFA Rural Development Chairman, Michael Biggins, has welcomed confirmation by the Minister of Agriculture Charlie McConalogue that all applications submitted under tranche 21 of TAMS will be approved.

“70% of applicants had been approved for the last three tranches and unsuccessful applicants had been carried forward. Farmers were faced with uncertainty concerning their investments and plans were delayed,” he said.

Materials such as steel and concrete have seen steep increases, up to 40% in some cases.

“The review of TAMS reference costings must be finalised without delay. It has to include all tranche 21 applications, and those currently in the system where the work or purchase of equipment has not started.

“It would be unacceptable not to include all applicants. Excluding them would mean they would get a lower rate of grant relative to investment costs incurred,” he concluded.

Gardaí appeal for vigilance following local agri scams < DAN DOONER

An Garda Síochána have issued an appeal for vigilance following a number of fraudulent transactions targeting agricultural businesses in Counties Roscommon, Cavan, Laois and Donegal in recent times.

Gardaí were made aware of a number of transactions in Cavan last week where an individual contacted businesses to place an order of up to 80 rolls of silage wrap valued up to €7,000.

Payment was made over the phone using a credit card and the goods were picked up by a courier.

However, when the seller was later contacted by the bank and advised that the card used for payment

was cloned, leaving the business down the cost of goods.

There have recently been four such incidents in Co. Cavan and a number of similar incidents in Roscommon, Laois, and Donegal.

In May, similar thefts occurred using cloned credit cards and goods purchased included silage wrap and farm machinery.

On June 23rd, a second attempt was made to purchase 80 rolls of silage wrap from an agri-business in Co. Cavan. On this occasion, however, Gardaí were present when the goods were collected and two individuals were arrested at the scene.

They were taken to Cavan Garda Station before being released without a charge.

A file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gardaí have advised businesses to remain vigilant and report any such trans-

actions which have been found to be fraudulent to their local Garda station.

“There’s a spin out there that some farmers will gain under the agreement, ICMSA believes that all farmers will lose under this CAP agreement with less money in the budget and a whole raft of new regulations proposed,” he said.

“There’s nothing there in terms of paying the farmers for the additional regulatory requirements, nor is there anything on the need for food prices to reflect the increased cost of production and compliance”.

Mr. McCormack described the agreement as “an insult to Irish farm families” and said the Government must realise that “no one is being fooled by platitudes of support”.

“This CAP takes aim at our family farms and it’s especially concerning that our rural TDs seem so casual about that threat,” he said.

“We have page after page of exhausting and minute commitment and undertaking

and targets – and not a word or sentence that I could see that even pretends to concern itself with the income of the people who will be operating this system and expected to deliver on the hundreds of commitments. Farmers have become an afterthought in CAP and farmer incomes are even less important than that,” he added.

The ICMSA President claims the policy has been “hijacked and repurposed away from farming and food towards environmental stewardship”.

“It’s already obvious where this is going to fall down. The shift away from farming and food production to land-owning and non-activity is going to mean that family farms will be expected to meet endlessly exacting standards that our competitors can ignore.

“CAP has been taken over; it hasn’t been fit-for-purpose for at least 20 years but it limped on to where we are now. And where we are now is an agreement that undermines our commercial family farms, fails on real sustainability and ducks out on getting corporations and consumers to pay the real price of food”.

There were 500 cattle presented at last week’s sale with increased numbers of bullocks on offer.

The bullock ring witnessed a very lively trade, with exceptional prices paid for the quality light store bullocks – prices for those lots peaked at €3.25 a kilo. The heavier lots recorded equally strong demand with lots making up to €1,185 over or €2.78 a kilo, with increased northern demand evident this week.

The heifer ring also reported a good clearance this week with prices and trade similar to previous weeks. The dry cow trade remains very strong with cows making up to €1,900 and the top lots fetching €2.43 a kilo. Breeding stock remains a lively trade also with €2,510 forked out for a Limousin cow and her bull calf at foot.

The calf trade with fewer numbers on offer are still in strong demand. The weanling trade witnessed good farmer demand this week with prices reflective of quality.

Cows with calves at foot made from €1,400 to €2,510. Young calves made from €130 to €340 with runners making from €120 to €645 for the continental lots on offer.

Failure to backdate Fair Deal could be open to court challenge – Naughten Independent TD Denis Naughten has raised the prospect of a court challenge to the reform of the Fair Deal Nursing Home Support Scheme due to the failure to recognise farm transfers in advance of an older person entering longterm care.

“Under the new law, older people who transferred the family farm and entitlements to a successor prior to entering a nursing home will have to do so again under the changes brought about by the reform of the Nursing Home

Independent TD Denis Naughten.

Support Scheme currently going through the Dáil. This is in order to avail of the three-year means assessment cap for the farm,” he said.

Speaking during the discussion on the matter at Dáil Committee recently, Deputy Naughten said: “We are now placing a legal obligation on an older person to transfer an asset that was not in their name when they went into the nursing home, in order to avail of the three years on the means assessment”.

To avoid such a legal challenge Denis Naughten has proposed that the new cap on working asset, a business or farm, be backdated to the date of the Government decision to reform the law in this area, 24th July 2018.

“From that date, the Government decision has been taken not to charge older people for working assets beyond the three year period, and therefore no charges should apply to farm or business assets for those who had already paid the three years contribution

IFA welcomes Seanad amendments to Climate Bill < DAN DOONER

The IFA President, Tim Cullinan, has welcomed the decision at committee stage in the Seanad to accept two amendments to the Climate Action Bill, which he says give full recongnition for carbon removals on farms.

“IFA has been lobbying intensively for three amendments to the Bill.

Despite strong engagement, we were disappointed that the Minister accepted no amendments in the Dáil,” he said.

“We then took our campaign to the Seanad. In fairness to Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil Senators, amendments were put down and followed up, which have now been accepted by the Government”.

The IFA President said there were still issues surrounding the Bill, however.

“There are still serious issues, particularly around the ‘distinct characteristics’

of biogenic methane, along with the need to avoid any international carbon leakage arising from the implementation of the Bill,” he said.

Meanwhile, Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan said the legislation would enable Ireland to create a “climate resilient economy”.

“I’d like to thank Minister Eamon Ryan for accepting this amendment on carbon removals and this section was passed by the Seanad.

This means the definition of ‘carbon budget’ is now accepted in the legislation to include the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions minus carbon removals to be included as part of the calculation of carbon emissions.

“The Minister spoke about how this provides real opportunity and that agriculture is not the most difficult sector to bring about climate action and how action also needs to be taken on our transport systems.

Roscommon MART WATCH We had a good-sized sale again last Friday, with a solid trade for all classes. There was a good number of customers, both online and at the ringside, who were all anxious for stock.

Bullocks averaged from €2.55 per kilo up to €3.29 per kilo with lots making up to €1195 over their weight. Heifer numbers were small due to this week’s anniversary sale, and lots fetched from an average of €2.26 per kilo up to €2.50 per kilo. Dry cows ranged from an average of €2.21 per kilo up to €2.57per kilo.

War of Independence in Roscommon 100 years ago

Burnings, Assassination and Truce On July 11th, 1921, a truce between the IRA and British Crown forces came into effect, ending two and a half years of conflict. In the ten-day period leading up to the truce, many shooting incidents took place throughout the county.

On July 2nd, volunteers from the 3rd Battalion (North) Flying Column made another foray into the village of Tarmonbarry to try and pierce the RIC barrack armour. The RIC barracks, which was a well-fortified building with steel shuttering and barbed wire in place, had been the target of the IRA on previous occasions, but its security could never be breached.

On this occasion, a police patrol returning to the barracks from across the bridge came under fire from the column, resulting in wounds being inflicted, but the formidable fortress remained unscathed. Shooting incidents also took place in Ballaghaderreen and Rooskey, where RIC members were wounded.

On July 9th, at Southpark near Castlerea, another ambush took place when a number of shots were fired at an RIC patrol. However, the volunteers had to withdraw due to being outnumbered by the large number of police in the patrol.

On the night of July 10th, just hours before the commencement of the truce, a large contingent of volunteers were waiting on the north side of Strokestown, ready to ambush a foot patrol of police that usually returned to barracks before nightfall. But on this occasion, the patrol went a different road, and escaped what could have been a deadly ambush.

The burning of farmhouses by the Black and Tans, in reprisal for attacks on Crown forces, was a practice that had become rampant through the latter months of the conflict. This policy had escalated in the summer with the attempted burning of the town of Ballaghaderreen and the complete destruction of Knockcroghery by incendiary. A number of homes in the Athlone district were also torched by the Tans.

In response to this, the IRA began targeting the houses of people who were loyal to the British Crown. In the final months of the war, a few of those houses were burned to the ground.

Moydrum Castle, the residence of Lord Castlemaine, located on the Westmeath side of Athlone was destroyed by fire, as was Creggan House in south Roscommon, and Correal House near Four Roads, the abode of Resident Magistrate Percy McGann.

On July 9th (two days before the Truce) Southpark House in Castlerea, the residence of Major M.J. Balfe, was burned by the IRA as a reprisal for the farmhouses burned by the Black and Tans in that region.

The War of Independence in County Roscommon ended more with a bang than with a whimper. During the two and a half-year conflict, there were three high-profile casualties on the Crown forces side. One such casualty was Captain Wilfred Peake, commander of the 9th Lancers, who was killed in an ambush at Scramogue in March.

HQ, who was Officer Commanding all British forces in the county, including the rest of Connacht. The third high-profile fatality was that of RIC Sergeant James King of the Castlerea garrison.

Sergeant King had been the man who led the infamous Castlerea Murder Gang on the reign of terror during 1920 and 1921 in west Roscommon.

The Murder Gang, made up of RIC, Auxiliaries, Black and Tans and British Army had been guilty of many brutal killings during the period, targeting and eliminating known volunteers.

Sergeant King was a much-feared individual around Castlerea, and had earned the reputation of being ruthless and merciless towards members of the volunteer movement. His unit had been responsible for a number of atrocities where men were abducted and brutally beaten before being shot dead.

The bodies of their victims were usually dumped on roadsides or in fields.

Other victims were shot while they lay sleeping in their beds.

Sergeant King was an elusive figure; he stayed at the RIC barracks instead of his own home on occasions and only went out when in the company of the patrols. He only went to his house when he felt safe to do so. He probably suspected that he could be a target for assassination and therefore kept his movements irregular.

In the summer of 1921, talks took place between the British government and representatives of Sinn Féin, and rumours were rife of a possible end to hostilities. Then, it was announced that a truce would come into effect at 12 noon on July 11th. Previous to this, volunteers of the Castlerea active service unit had been monitoring the movements of Sergeant King. They noticed that when he did go to his own house, he always left early to go back to the barracks. He usually walked briskly, with his hand on his revolver.

On the morning of July 11th, King ate breakfast at his home in Patrick’s Street. At approximately 10.30 am, he emerged to go to the barracks, this time on a bicycle. Before he could mount the bicycle, however, two men appeared from a shop with revolvers.

They fired at their target and Sergeant King fell dead.

scene on bicycles, which they later abandoned, and took to the fields. The shooting of Sergeant King disturbed a hornet’s nest, as the RIC and Tans took to the streets searching for the assassins.

As the police and military scoured the town and countryside around Castlerea, the two culprits were away in a field on the Williamstown road, masquerading as farmhands helping round up sheep.

While the hunt went on for the two IRA volunteers, the clock struck noon, and the war was over. Sergeant King was the last fatal police casualty in Roscommon, (if not in Ireland) during the Troubles.

In October 1921, negotiations began between Sinn Fáin representatives and the British government. This eventually led to the signing of the Anglo-Irish

Treaty on December 6th in London.

The terms of the agreement were basically that Ireland would be divided; a 500 kilometre long border would carve the country in two. Twenty-six counties would become the Irish Free State, and the six northern counties would remain under British rule, and become known as Northern Ireland. The Treaty was debated in Dáil Éireann, and passed by a narrow majority of just seven votes.

The result was a divided country, both politically and geographically, a divided Sinn Féin, and a divided IRA. The ramifications of the Treaty led to a Civil War, which left a legacy of bitterness that is still evident to this day.

Ladies ready for ‘group of death’!

TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Intermediate Football Championship (Round 1): Roscommon v Kildare at 2 pm on Sunday in Duggan Park, Ballinasloe < SEAMUS DUKE

The Roscommon Ladies footballers will be putting what was a frustrating league campaign behind them when they take on Kildare in their championship opener this Sunday. With Laois also in the group, the three teams look well matched and there won’t be much between any of them.

Roscommon manager Diane O’Hora told People Sport on Tuesday that they had learned a lot from the league campaign, which ended in disappointment after defeats to Sligo and Laois.

“We took stock after the defeat against Laois and I include players

and management in that, We learned a lot and now we are in a really good place and the girls are raring to go again on Sunday.

“We played a few challenges and several girls who did not get a chance in the league have been involved and that has been very positive and has given us many more options. I can tell you it will be a very difficult team to pick,” she said.

The Mayo native says that Kildare will pose a significant challenge, but she has been impressed with the attitude shown by her own charges.

“Kildare are a fine team. They are very physical and their management team has been with them for four years so they know what they are about. They are an attacking team so we will have to be ready for the challenge they will present.

“But I have been so impressed with the attitude of the Roscommon players. They are so hungry and are chomping at

The three teams are all confident of getting through and our aim has to be to top the group and that has to start with a win on Sunday,” Diane said.

One win will ensure progression to the next stage while two wins would give any of the three teams huge momentum going forward. If Roscommon’s experienced players can lead from the front, they can get off to the best start possible.

Youngsters set for Kingdom showdown Electric Ireland 2020 AllIreland MFC (U-17) semifinal: Roscommon v Kerry at 2.30 pm on Sunday in Limerick < SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon and Kerry have spent the last 18 months working towards Sunday’s longawaited All-Ireland Minor Football Championship semi-final at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick.

Their championship matches have been spread out over 12 months and the only similarity is that both counties won their respective provincial titles in December 2020.

Roscommon manager, Emmett Durney, told People Sport this week said his charges have been busy in preparation since their Connacht final win over Sligo on Stephen’s Day last.

“We started training again on January 1st and of course with the lockdown it had to be done virtually until May. We have played a few challenge games against Offaly and Meath and a few in-house games too but it has been difficult – the same for everyone,” he said.

In their wins against Galway and Sligo in the Connacht Championship, Durney’s side showed incredible resilience and a neversay-die attitude, and if they bring that to the table again this Sunday they will not be far away.

“We have a couple of injuries to Oisin Cregg and Aaron Shannon but we are hopeful that they will be ready to play some part on Sunday. But the biggest problem we have had is that eleven players have been doing their Leaving Certificate and that had to take priority of course.

“Then there are eight players who are on this year’s minor team and they are preparing for the championship too so it has not been easy to juggle everything in terms of preparation,” Durney said.

Needless to say, the Clann na nGael man is expecting a huge challenge from The Kingdom.

“Kerry never have a bad team at any level and this will be no different. But we have a great bunch of committed young lads here and we are looking forward to this challenge immensely. Our lads are a really resilient bunch. They are determined to do well and they have given huge commitment to the cause for such a long period of time. I have great admiration for them.

“Winning a Connacht title is not enough for them. They want to go further and they are very ambitious which is great to see. We want to see them go out and do themselves justice on the day,” he said.

With no form to go on, it is impossible to make any kind of prediction about this match. Roscommon have prepared well and will be ready for the fray. They will need a great performance to win but will be expected to do themselves justice. We can ask for no more than that.

Irish racing this evening is on the flat in Leopardstown at 4.40 pm. Tomorrow sees a national hunt card at Cork at 4.30 pm and another national hunt card at Kilbeggan at 4.15 pm.

There are two meetings at Navan on Saturday from 1 pm and the national hunt fare at Greenmount Park in Limerick starts at 1.20 pm.

Sunday’s racing is at Fairyhouse at 1.55 pm and from 1.55 pm in Sligo.

On Monday, the five-day Killarney Racing Festival starts with three evening meetings starting at 4.40 pm, 4.20 pm and 4.25 pm and finishes with two afternoon cards both off at 1.40 pm. There is also flat racing at Dundalk on Monday afternoon at 1 pm.

In Newmarket’s Group 1 July Cup on Saturday, Ballydoyle have Lope Y Fernandez entered without jockey arrangements and must have a chance if he runs. An interesting runner here is Rohaan who David Evans has supplemented and is seeking a fourtimer. O’Brien runs Mother Earth in the Falmouth Stakes on Friday.

In the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes last Saturday in Sandown, St. Mark’s Basilica with Ryan Moore on board for Aidan O’Brien got the better of his older rivals Addeybb, ridden by Tom Marquand and Mishriff with David Egan by 3½l and a neck. Marquand had ample compensation riding a four-timer on Hurricane Ivor dead heating the first, Came From The Dark in the second and ending the card with Farasi Lane in the penultimate and Wink Of An Eye in the last.

O’Brien continued his Group 1 collection in on Sunday when Broome, ridden by Colin Keane, won the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in Paris. The 4-Y-0 led for most of the trip with Baron Samedi, trained by O’Brien’s son, Joseph, settled on his heels.

Baron Samedi started to drop back as Broome forged on, with Ebaiyra came with a late challenge to finish second, with Gold Trip in third with Arc runner-up.

Spoiled Rotten, trained by Denise Foster, just got up to beat Gallic Boy and Patricks Hill by a neck and ½l and Hallowed Star won for John ‘Shark’ Hanlon from We’ll Go Again and Powerful Out. The 2m handicap hurdle was won by the Matthew Smith trained Punter’s Poet by 1¾l and 6 ½l from Call The Fairies and Stealthy Tom. The winner was ridden by champion jockey Paul Townend, his only mount of the meeting.

Racing News Horse Racing Ireland, at the discretion of individual racecourses, will allow up to 500 people, including the 200-owner allowance, to attend a meeting from Monday last. The racecourses will decide the make-up of the additional 300.

Grade One-winning hurdler Skyace is in the Galway Hurdle.

Bought at the sales out of Willie Mullins’ yard for £600 for the Birdinthehand Syndicate, headed by Rossie Cahal McHugh, the mare has won five times, including Fairyhouse Mares Novice Championship Final and mostly at big odds. She also finished fourth in Cheltenham’s Group 2 Mares Novice. Hanlon expects her to get in at a nice weight and is bringing 10 to 12 horses to the western festival.

Roscommon Golf Club welcomed members of Roscommon Special Olympics Club on Thursday evening last as they took part in the Golf4All programme, a new initiative

by Golf Ireland. The evening was a resounding success so thank you to all club officials who had a big welcome for the Special Olympians!

Castlerea Castlerea hosted the Boys’ U-18 Connacht Interclub Qualifier recently with 28 golfers taking part. Roscommon’s Elliot Grealy was the impressive winner with 42 points.

In the Hayden Shoes Men’s competition, Keith McDermott came out on top with 66 nett while Ruth O’Sullivan took the Ladies’ with 43.

The Ladies’ 9-hole Qualifier also went to Ruth with 39 points while last Thursday’s event was won by Margaret Waters with 24.

Boyle The Men’s President’s Prize (Padraic O’Connell) takes

place in Boyle this Sunday (11th).

Recently, the James Shivnan Cup was won by Brian Furey with 41 points. Brian also won the 12-hole competition with a fantastic score of 33.

Last Sunday’s PGA Tankard was won by Tommy King with 44 points.

Best of luck to John McGuinn’s All-Ireland Fourball team and Liam Whyte’s Pierce Purcell team, who are both in action this week.

Carrick The winner of last weekend’s competition was Shamzuri Hanifa with an excellent score of 51 points. Oliver Curran was second with 43 and Martin Talbot finished third with 41. Danny Egan won the gross prize with 40.

The Junior Cup team lost out to Ballina in the second round on a scoreline of 3-2 while the club wishes the Jimmy Bruen team the best of luck this weekend against Roscommon.

Athlone Liam Hennelly won the 18hole Stableford on June 30th with 43 points while Eunan McBrearty took top prize in Meals on Wheels Stableford with 41. PJ Martin topped the leaderboard in the recent AWGS with 33.

The Ladies’ Meals on Wheels competition was won by Imelda Sheeran with 46 points with Sylvia McInerney taking the 9-hole competition with 22. Marion O’Shea won the ’97 Club 12-hole competition on July 1st with 39 points.

Handball

Onewall County Championships Handball made a very welcome return to Roscommon when Mount Talbot hosted the Onewall County Championships on Sunday, June 27th.

A large crowd of competitors and enthusiasts turned up to the outdoor venue and were rewarded with beautiful weather and some entertaining matches.

Like a number of other competitors, the lockdown encouraged Dylan Hanley and Cathal O’Connor to return to action after some time away. They contested the Men’s Open final with Hanley winning 15-8, 15-3.

The Men’s ‘A’ final saw another returnee Fionn Cusack beat Liam O’Ceallaigh 15-5, 15-11 while the younger of the Coggeran brothers, David, won the Men’s ‘B’ division, beating Cathal Treacy 15-4, 15-5.

The Men’s ‘C’ event saw Thomas Mahady (Kilglass) emerging victorious, beating John Galvin in the final 15-7, 15-4.

John Coggeran won the Masters event, beating Fergal Timmons 15-12, 15-3.

There only underage match saw Carragh Kennedy beat Allannah Coggeran 15-2, 15-2 in the Girls’ U-17 grade.

There was a badly needed boost for Roscommon football on Tuesday night at Dr. Hyde Park when the U-20 side swept past Leitrim to qualify for the Connacht semi-final against Sligo next Wednesday.

In very wet conditions, the home side made a slow start, but with Colin Walsh, Keith Doyle, Daire Cregg, Adam McDermott and Ben O’Carroll outstanding, Roscommon began to pull away. They led by 0-7 to 0-2 by the 23rd minute and then, when leading by four points in first-half injurytime (0-10 to 0-6), Leitrim midfielder Gavin Reynolds was black carded and Roscommon punished the visitors with a devastating burst of scoring.

Two goals within 60 seconds from Adam McDermott and Ben O’Carroll left Roscommon ahead by 2-10 to 0-6 at the break.

But worse was to come for Leitrim on the restart

when Roscommon grabbed two goals through Darragh Heneghan and James Fitzpatrick. It left the home side 16 points in front and the match was a non-event after that.

There were some eyecatching displays from the home side particularly from Doyle, Cregg and O’Carroll, while for a wellbeaten Leitrim team, Tom Prior stood out with some quality scores.

After the match the Roscommon manager Liam Tully was happy with his side’s display but says they have plenty to work on.

“We had a slow start but we got into the game well and I was happy with our attacking play in the conditions and we took our goals

well.

“We will be back training on Friday night and we are expecting a formidable challenge from Sligo but with so many players out we are very happy to get over this hurdle tonight and we can press on now,” he said.

‘Ref justice’ as hurlers edged by Derry Christy Ring Cup (Round 2) Derry 0-19 Roscommon 1-15 < SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon hurlers produced their best performance of the year in Athleague last Saturday but still came up short against a Derry side which played with a man less for 63 minutes.

The defeat means a relegation play-off against Sligo as the Rossies attempt to cling to their Christy Ring status for another year.

Manager, Johnny Keane was pleased with last Saturday’s showing but said luck had so far eluded his side.

“The character of these lads is phenomenal. We lost every single game we played this year and they still want to come back and that’s something to be admired. But we have never got a break this year.

Now we play Sligo… they knew

the draw all year, so they knew they would be playing Roscommon and have had months to prepare,” he said.

The Galway man was scathing in his assessment of the standard of officiating on show last Saturday.

“I don’t know what you had to do to get a free off the referee in the second half. You can’t talk to these guys either. They’re a level above us. We are treated like second-class citizens. I’ll probably get in trouble for this but who listens to me?

“I’m just sick of it. Every single day of the week we come out, you’re told to shut up. That’s fine, maybe I talk too much anyway but the amount of work that goes into this, and these guys turn up and rule the roost,” he said.

“I feel there’s a small bit of arrogance among referees and I’d like it changed…even the linesman won’t look at you or address you.

Maybe it’s me, but from talking to lads across the board, the same thing is happening,” he said.

This is a game Roscommon shouldn’t have lost against a Derry side which was reduced to four-

teen as early as the seventh minute when corner back Darragh McCloskey received his marching orders for an off the ball incident.

Derry were further depleted on 32 minutes when full-back Sean Cassidy was sin binned. Roscommon failed to capitalise and Cathal Dolan’s penalty was saved by Oisin O’Doherty.

The hosts did lead by 1-11 to 0-8 at half-time thanks to a goal from Conall Kennelly and some accurate free taking from Dolan.

Derry began to chip away at Roscommon’s lead and by the 59th minute had drawn level at 0-15 to 1-12. When Conor Kelly gave them the lead, they kept their noses in front until the full-time whistle.

Roscommon still could have snatched a draw deep into injurytime but Cathal Dolan’s 45-metre free sailed wide.

For Johnny Keane and his charges, it’s the last-chance saloon in Sligo.

“We lost by a point today but we should have got at least a draw and I won’t be worried at all about lifting the lads for that match (Sligo).

We will be ready for it,” he said.

Pain in the rain as Rossies exit early again!

A miserable year for Roscommon footballers came to a conclusion at a sodden Dr. Hyde Park on Sunday last when Galway were the deserved five-point winners in a forgettable Connacht Championship semi-final.

As the heavens opened, it was clear that the winners of this clash would be the team that made fewer mistakes on the day and that turned out to be the Tribesmen. They scored two goals that fell into the ‘soft’ variety from a Roscommon point of view and they were decisive. Down at the other end of the field, the home side failed to create one clear goal chance in the entire game and that was to prove costly.

There was huge effort from the Roscommon players throughout, but several crucial errors and a defensive game plan were their undoing in the end.

Despite the deluge of rain that fell before throw-in, the Hyde Park pitch stood up well though the sur-

face was slippery and difficult. The first quarter of the game was lifeless with both sides moving the ball laterally with possession the priority.

There were only four scores before the first water break. Sean Kelly and a booming point from Damien Comer for Galway while Diarmuid Murtagh and Enda Smith were on target for Roscommon.

Thankfully for the 1,049 people present, the game opened up somewhat in the second quarter. In the 21st minute, Galway made the breakthrough. Sean Kelly made a great run into Roscommon territory, off-loaded to Peter Cooke who spotted Paul Kelly free on the edge of the square and he fisted to the Roscommon net.

Roscommon’s response was immediate with Conor Hussey and Conor Daly pointing from play by the 26th minute. Paul Kelly fisted over for the visitors after a good run a minute later but Roscommon were level by the 30th minute with Conor Daly and Donie Smith on target.

sides went to the dressing rooms it was Galway who led by 1-5 to 0-7.

Despite the closeness of the scoring, one always got the feeling in the third quarter that Galway were the more likely winners. Their approach was far more direct and they were creating more chances.

By the second water break they led by 1-9 to 0-9 with Tierney (2), Paul Kelly, and Robert Finnerty on target. Roscommon’s replies came from a Donie Smith ’45 and a fisted point from sub Cathal Cregg who was forced to retire injured just five minutes after he had come on for Shane Killoran.

Galway were able to keep Roscommon at arm’s length until the clinching score came in the 66th minute when Sean Kelly once again did the spade work. The Roscommon defence had two chances to clear as the ball bobbed around in front of gaol and Matthew Tierney reacted quickest to fire past Colm Lavin and off a post to seal the win.

It was a very disappointing day for the home side for whom Enda Smith was by far the best performer on the day. Brian Stack, Donie Smith, Sean Mullooly and sub Ultan Harney were others who played well.

For the winners, Kieran Molloy was the People Sport ‘man of the match’ followed closely by Matthew Tierney, the Kelly brothers and Peter Cooke.

When Roscommon look back on this, they can have no complaints as Galway were the better team on

the day. Roscommon made crucial errors for both Galway goals and it is something that has happened this year on a number of occasions.

The arrival of Stephen Poacher as a coach has not resulted in an improvement and Roscommon’s style of play has become more defensive this year. It’s a style of play that does not suit the likes of Ciaráin and Diarmuid Murtagh, Conor Cox, Donie Smith and the other Roscommon forwards and the scoring rate has dropped alarmingly players are operating further away from the opposition goal.

With Division Two football coming up next spring, and some players coming towards the end of their careers, one got the impression after last Sunday’s game that it was the end of an era for a team that has given Roscommon followers some great days out with two Connacht titles and three Division Two titles in recent years.

In truth, 2021 has been a real struggle. A return to the traditional style of Roscommon football that maximises the talent in the team, particularly up front, would surely be a better way forward.

It will be February 2022 before we see Roscommon perform in a competitive environment again and it is a shame that there is not a second chance for teams knocked out early in the championship this year but that’s the situation in these Covid times. It leaves plenty of time for soul searching.

Speaking at the full-time whistle on Sunday last, Roscommon manager, Anthony Cunningham, expressed his dismay that another year has come to an end for his charges.

“I’m really disappointed that we don’t have a second chance. Normally we would be out again next Sunday. For the promotion of our games there has to be more matches and less training,” he said.

“To have straight knockout for football is really poor from the authorities. We see group stages in other sports like rugby, soccer and even hurling.

The GAA are going to lose out if they don’t have more games.”

Reflecting on Roscommon’s early championship exit, Cunningham was also disappointed at the concession of two soft goals.

“There wasn’t a lot in it but in the conditions when the opposition get a goal you have to fight that bit harder. We responded very well after the first goal but then to concede a soft goal like that at the end was a killer,” he said.

While he still has one more year left in his arrangement with the County Board, the Galway man refused to comment on his future.

“I’ve not going to decide anything this even-

ing; that’s for again but we enjoy working with the players. They give us everything. But there is a huge amount of work when you are at the top table. I don’t think many people realise just how much work goes on. It’s a seven-day a week job and it’s the same for all counties.

“We have highly-skilled professional people all working in the background and it’s a like a mini company that we are running now. It’s a job we enjoy but the amount of work involved is absolutely huge,” he concluded.

Note: This so-called ‘test event’ meant that a couple of hundred people had to sit out in the open on the concrete seats in front of the stand last Sunday in the torrential rain. Those people would have been much drier if they had been standing on the terraces even out in the rain. The amount of over cautious bureaucracy associated with this match was hard to fathom. One aspect of it all meant that the Roscommon People photographer Mick McCormack was denied access to the match. In fairness to Roscommon County Board and to the Connacht Council, they did what they could to resolve the situation but the people in Dublin who were in charge of the event stonewalled all attempts. Not good enough.
