My son was recently diagnosed with autism.

There is no family history of autism whatsoever.

I always thought that his care at the time of his birth was poor. Please tell me if you have ever come across a case where a child’s autism diagnosis was linked to his birth management.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be regarded as a developmental difference which relates to how a person communicates and interacts with others, and how they experience the world around them.

As a result of the ability to think and process the world differently from what society expects, those who possess these differences in thought are called “neurodivergent,” while those who do not are called “neurotypical.”

ASD has a tendency to run in families, but the inheritance pattern is usually unknown. I note that you say that you have no family history of autism.

Well, thing is… I was in our shed…

So you said…

I’ve texted my wife and received the grim news. So I peep out, see four young lads walking to our front door, giggling…

Yeah?

I had no money or sweets for the trick or treaters… I didn’t know what to do!

Mmnn…

So I’m pretty sure they haven’t seen me…

Okay…

So I think, ‘Hey, Halloween’s all about fun! And scaring people!’

NO, PLEASE, NO! Beside me in the shed, there’s a large white sheet near the cans of paint…

NO! You didn’t…

It was a spur of the moment thing. I put the sheet over my head, knocking over a few cans in the process. I saw the boys – all excited – ring our doorbell…

NO! So I raced out of the shed and began shouting ‘I’m the Halloween ghost! Can I help you?’

What happened?

Well, they were briefly er, terrified, but then they realised it was a joke.

So all good?

Well, just then my wife came home, and saw me dressed as a ghost, explaining myself to the boys…

AND? I told her my rationale. And then, from our living room window, I heard that scary theme tune for the end of EastEnders!

It’s been a GOOD week for…

Evidence continues to emerge of a suggested association between ASD and birth injuries and also other conditions in the immediate post birth phase.

For example, brain injury can occur in circumstances where there is a lack of oxygen or other brain trauma during a baby’s birth, thereby increasing the risk of ASD.

Also, a well-known study has identified a link between hypoglycaemia and ASD. In situations where a newborn’s blood sugars become low a condition called hypoglycaemia can develop and if not treated quickly, brain injury can potentially occur, increasing the risk of ASD. I understand that this is a sensitive subject and if you would like to call me in confidence, I will be happy to speak with you.

was built in 1783 at the sole expense of Mrs Walcott and that the building is now home to the Roscommon Library headquarters, however, brought to life in this new book are numerous ‘movers and shakers’ who assisted in that project.

Details of the original lease from Thomas Goff to Edward Mills of the Treasurer of the Infirmary, of one acre, one rood and thirteen perches for the building is noted. The yearly rental of £7 was high for the times.

Some of these registers are available online on the Library website and reveal the ordinary sufferings of rural people from all parts of East Galway and Roscommon in the course of their daily lives. These are a muchunderused source for genealogical research.

been published before, this book is packed with local history. The 32 chapters are arranged in digestible segments so the reader can dip

in and out at leisure over the long winter months.

FRIDAY Wonderful Westport

Westport never disappoints.

How could it?

(It turns out that the same cannot be said of the Mayo county final, but we’ll come back to that).

We arrived in wonderful Westport this evening, our destination for a welcome weekend break being the Westport Plaza Hotel.

Fiona and I are veterans of Westport hotel breaks by now, stretching back over 20 years to when we joined the ‘couples with very small children’ circuit. Happy memories (restaurant tantrums included), when venues like the Westport Woods, Castlecourt Hotel, the Harbour Mill apartments (and adjoining Westport Coast Hotel) were favourite locations.

After some very nice bar food, we embarked on the familiar stroll across the bridge, expectantly proceeding ‘down town’ to Westport’s bustling strip.

Of course we popped into Matt Molloy’s. As ever, traditional music emanated from the bottom end of the main bar, and as ever, it wasn’t easy to locate seats.

As I browsed the fascinating display of mostly black and white framed photos on the walls – featuring famous visitors to Matt Molloy’s – a man with a long ponytail led guests in a stirring version of the classic Lynyrd Skynyrd song, ‘Freebird’. The atmosphere is always great in this unique pub.

SATURDAY World Cup final

Tonight’s Rugby World Cup final started slowly, and in terms of attractive, attacking play, it was never a classic. But it was utterly gripping, a tense and fascinating battle, yellow cards (and one red) permeating the action at intervals as if to purposely add suspense and an air of unpredictability.

I picked South Africa as likely tournament winners a few weeks ago, probably because of the Jim McGuinness factor. Like Donegal (for a period under Jim) they know how to win matches, and tend to mercilessly grind their opposition into submission.

It’s not pretty, but let’s give credit to this South African team. In the past fortnight they beat each of France, England and New Zealand by a point.

That’s some marriage of resilience and brilliance. This is a truly great team.

SATURDAY/SUNDAY A special Friend

Returning to our hotel tonight, I was shocked and saddened to read online of the death of actor Matthew Perry, best known for playing Chandler Bing in the phenomenally successful US sitcom, Friends.

Friends ran from 1994 to 2004, and while it was massively popular then, the show has acquired millions of further fans worldwide in the years since.

Indeed it was an eye-opener in our house a few years back to witness our daughters discover a show which ended almost 20 years ago. As in so

many other households, our children quickly fell in love with Friends.

An interesting point about this iconic sitcom – focussed on the everyday lives of six young friends who live in Manhattan and spend most of their time together – is that a case can be made for each character being the most popular! Unlike in Fawlty Towers (Basil), and most sitcoms, there arguably isn’t a lead character – each of the six have a massive following. This is a tribute to great writing, inspired casting and the brilliant performances of the six (Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer).

And yet, while the stars were generally given a fair share of the top storylines and razor-sharp one-liners, I have often observed that Chandler was the favourite of so many fans. Indeed Perry’s character was chosen for that accolade in a recent poll.

Matthew Perry’s ‘personal demons’ have been well documented. His death at just 54 years of age is a huge loss.

Perry worked tirelessly to help others who, like him, were battling addiction.

He was an electrifying presence in a sitcom that has a special place in the hearts and minds of millions of fans,

from 1994 to the present day. Chandler’s smile, wit, brilliant comic timing and sheer likeability will always be remembered. Perry was a great actor.

His courageous work on addiction also points to a great man. (See Alannah Ita Healy column on page 15).

SUNDAY MORNING Wake-up call!

Me (at 10 am): Enjoying a second successive ‘Full Irish’ in the Westport Plaza Hotel, my mind wanders, and I guiltily wonder if I should ‘use’ the imminent start of November to inspire some sort of personal fitness regime.

Me (at 11 am): Back in our room, I check my Twitter feed and read that someone has already run (and won) the Dublin City Marathon, this morning.

Run and won the 26.2 mile marathon before 11 am in the morning.

Interesting.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON Few laughs in Jester Around 40 customers (mostly Manchester United diehards) are gathered

in The Jester Bar for today’s big derby, as my father-in-law, Seamus Beirne, gratefully secure two barstools. On the big screens, the assembled at Old Trafford pay an emotional farewell to the peerless Bobby Charlton, in front of the stand named after him.

On a smaller screen behind the counter, the Mayo County Final is on. A few locals keep an eye on it, but most of the focus is on Manchester.

United start reasonably well, but City’s familiar slick passing game soon sets the tone. I can feel the dubious optimism around me begin to wilt. A Haaland penalty casts gloom around The Jester. United try to rally, but City go on to win 3-0.

Behind us, a United supporter is spitting fire… about the manager’s tactics and team selection, and the (alleged) frailties of selected players.

Give the barstool expert the job!

In front of me, a weary looking man is doubled over and looking the worse for wear, but it turns out not to be a demoralised United supporter; it’s just a Halloween ‘dummy’.

The Manchester United supporters were more sad than angry. The TVs switched to the second half of the Mayo county final, which really was dire. I felt sorry for Aidan O’Shea, empty-handed in another final.

But Breaffy didn’t deserve to win.

Neutrals watching this very poor game (Ballina won by 0-6 to 0-4) might suggest that nobody deserved to win it.

MONDAY Homeward bound

The staff at the Westport Plaza (and adjoining Castlecourt Hotel) were fantastic. These are two excellent venues.

Before heading home to Roscommon today, we took a drive through the breathtakingly beautiful ‘Doolough Valley’ (part of the Wild Atlantic Way, between Louisburgh and Leenaun).

Highly recommended.

New Web Summit CEO has Roscommon connections The new CEO of Web Summit, Katherine Maher, has connections to Co. Roscommon.

Ms Maher, who is originally from Connecticut in the United States, has Irish roots with her mother’s side of the family coming from the Tisrara/Mount Talbot area of County Roscommon and her father’s side of the family coming from Templemore in County Tipperary.

Last week, the company appointed Ms Maher as its new chief executive, replacing former CEO Paddy Cosgrave after he stepped down due to the backlash he received following comments he made about the Israel/ Hamas war on the social media platform ‘X’, previously Twitter.

Murphy says public’s voice must be heard

Fianna Fàil Senator Eugene Murphy has called for the views of the people of Strokestown to be listened to before Roscommon County Council presses ahead with a planned redesign of two prime streets in the historic town.

Senator Murphy says he is committed to the spending of public monies in the town but he wants consultants who were employed to devise the plan to “listen with respect to the people of the town and the surrounding areas”.

As part of the Town Centres First initiative, Roscommon County Council is seeking Part 8 planning permission for the Strokestown Public Realm Enhancement Scheme. The scheme involves a redesign of the current streetscape in Church Street and Bawn Street.

While there is some support for the Council’s planned redesign of the two streets, a number of retailers and other individuals are strongly critical of the plans, as reported in last week’s Roscommon People.

Senator Murphy issued a press statement on the matter this week.

“I am particularly concerned about the debate around parking and the fear that our classy wide and rambling streets could be desecrated by any new plan. There is also a need for the consultants to acknowledge the need for common sense to prevail when dealing with parking spaces close to the entrance to Scoil Mhuire and St Mary’s Primary School.

“I hope traffic movement will be studied in and around the busy school times and not when schools are on a break. It would be a disaster to put restrictions on traffic parking in this region…”.

Senator Murphy also hinted that he is not in agreement with aspects of the landscaping works which have been proposed.

“People are making it clear” he said, “that they want the good points of the plan implemented and the negative points of the plan – particularly those pertaining to new parking arrangements – to be scrapped”.

Pat and Vincent Pierse were presented with a special award by Philip Dolan on behalf of South Roscommon Singers Circle on Friday night last in Murray’s, Knockcroghery.

The award was presented in recognition of their dedication and contribution to the traditional arts of singing, storytelling and balladmaking over several decades, locally, throughout Ireland and overseas.

All associated with the South Roscommon Singers Circle send Pat and Vincent huge congratulations on their award!

‘Constructive dialogue’ at Strokestown submissions clinic Organisers of a clinic held in Strokestown last Saturday to facilitate members of the community in preparing submissions concerning the ‘Part 8 Public Realm Enhancement Scheme’ in the town says upwards of 80 people attended over the course of three hours.

The volunteers who hosted the clinic say a number of those attending were seeking clarity on the proposals for both Church Street and Bawn Street before they completed their submissions. In a press statement, the hosts of the clinic say that a constructive dialogue was held amongst all who attended.

Emmett Corcoran, one of a handful of local people who volunteered to assist members of the community on the day, reflected on how it went: “In general, the mood at the clinic was one of hope. Those with concerns felt their issues could be satisfied if ‘common sense’ was to prevail”.

The hosts say there was a general sense of confusion about the plans.

One attendee alluded to such confusion around the proposed impact on parking… and affirmed their belief that 260 car parking spaces was more than adequate, a view not held by the majority.

Mr. Corcoran said: “Virtually all who attended the clinic agreed the parking scheme was deficient, at least in its proposed layout… the number of spaces in, and layout of, the proposed parking scheme was certainly the number one issue raised by attendees. Those in favour of a more orderly parking scheme con-

ceded that such a scheme should be introduced on foot of the establishment of ‘backland’ parking areas on Church Street and Bawn Street and with a greater degree of consideration for the rights of existing property and business owners and those with mobility issues.

“A close second in matters of concern was the inclusion of excessive vegetation and green areas in the plan… the main basis of objections to more green areas was the lack of a maintenance plan”.

Mr Corcoran added that the issue of preserving the built heritage of the

town was not as large a bone of contention as was expected.

He continued: “The positives in the plan were also noted in submissions.

They included the introduction of pedestrian crossings; relocation of the bus stop from Bridge Street to Church Street; introduction of uniform seatings and signage, and the appropriate resurfacing of carriageways/footpaths”.

According to the organisers, those in outright opposition to the plan were in the minority, with the vast majority of those who attended wishing to see the plan

progress, but with amendments.

The press statement added that while the minutiae of the amendments people sought varied, the ‘broad strokes’ were clear: 1: The parking scheme needs to be revisited, and if the existing on-street parking is to be reduced, off-street parking, in appropriate locations, should be provided.

2: Any new green areas or planting need to be resourced with a concrete plan for maintenance; however, the overwhelming majority do not wish to see new green spaces under any circumstances.

3: Access to properties, in particular businesses, needs to be prioritised.

Not just in terms of the provision of parking but also in terms of removing obstacles such as raised kerbing, vegetation, and cycle lanes. It was also felt that the project needs to be ‘future-proofed’.

Emmett Corcoran told the Roscommon People: “The local stakeholders’ position is quite clear. Any investment in Strokestown needs to be done in a sustainable way which is respectful of the needs and wants of the majority”.

The plan, either in its current form or with amendments, is set to be brought before the December meeting of the Boyle Municipal District, at which point the elected representatives will vote to either accept or reject the plan. *Organisers of the clinic point out that the closing date for submissions to Roscommon County Council is on or before 5 pm on 3rd of November 2023.

Local elections in focus: Shifting sands in Boyle gather votes from people of all political persuasions in his community; a testament to his dedication, and his ability to put his community ahead of his party.

Cllr Mulligan’s protege, Claire Kerrane, shocked punters in 2020 when she narrowly defeated sitting Fianna Fáil TD, Eugene Murphy, winning the first Dáil seat for Sinn Féin in Roscommon in living memory.

With the wind at Sinn Féin’s back and Cllr Mulligan’s track record, he is unlikely to be moved at the next local election. But will the wind be strong enough to drive Strokestown’s Rory Williams-Doyle over the finish line, and if so, at the expense of whom?

ELECTION EYE EMMETT CORCORAN

PART ONE: Boyle Municipal District In the summer of 2024, the people of Roscommon will take to the polls for local and European elections. This week I have decided to take a deep dive into who are potential runners and riders in the Boyle Municipal District.

The basics

The Boyle Municipal District is, naturally, constituted of the town of Boyle, but also takes in Ballaghaderreen, Strokestown, and virtually all electoral divisions along and north of the N5 corridor which crosses the county from Tarmonbarry to Tulsk, onto Frenchpark and exits the county into Mayo, at Ballaghaderreen.

County Roscommon is divided into three areas – the Boyle Municipal District in the north; the Roscommon Municipal District in the centre (constituted of Castlerea, Roscommon Town, and Ballyleague along with their hinterlands); and the Athlone Municipal District in the south of the county, with its main population centre being in Monksland, near Athlone.

The local authority divided the eighteen seats evenly across the three MDs. This means each MD can elect six county councillors.

Boyle MD

The Boyle MD currently is home to six councillors across the political spectrum. They are Valerie Byrne (Independent, Elphin); Liam Callaghan (Fine Gael, Castlerea); Tom Crosby (Independent, Tarmonbarry); John Cummins (Fianna Fáil, Boyle), Michael Mulligan (Sinn Féin, Ballaghaderreen) and Joe Murphy (Fianna Fáil, Strokestown).

As we go to print, the state of play appears to be that Councillors Joe Murphy (FF) and John Cummins (FF) will not be contesting the next local elections. Cllr Murphy, whose day job is as a postman, is standing down to focus on his family life, following his wife Nicola’s diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease.

Given that these high profile Fianna Fáil torchbearers are standing down, there will undoubtedly be a scramble by some ‘Young Turks’ and also by members of the ‘Old Guard’ to fill the political void within Fianna Fáil and retain the two seats for the party.

All indications point to the remaining

four sitting councillors in the Boyle MD seeking re-election. Valerie Byrne gathered a massive vote not just in her home town of Elphin last time out, but also in Boyle and Strokestown. The question is not whether Cllr Byrne will be elected if she runs again, but if she will top the poll or come a close second, as she did in 2019, with north of 1,500 first preferences.

Cllr Crosby lost his seat due to the constituency boundary changes in 2014 but he regained it with a healthy margin in 2019. The senior member of Roscommon County Council, Cllr Crosby will be hard shifted as he works doggedly for his constituents and consistently delivers for voters in his catchment area. However, Cllr Crosby is likely to face stern opposition in his backyard.

In all likelihood, Andrew Reynolds of Rooskey will seek the nomination to run for Fine Gael alongside sitting councillor, Liam Callaghan. If he seeks the nomination, Mr Reynolds will likely get the nod to run.

In 2019, Mr Reynolds acted as a great vote-sweeper for Cllr Callaghan with his transfers being essential in reelecting the sitting councillor.

As a candidate on his doorstep, Reynolds is likely to put some pressure on Cllr Crosby, but if past performance is to be an indication of future performance, Crosby will probably stay ahead of Reynolds in early outings.

A possible further challenge to Cllr Crosby comes from Strokestown where two new names are being touted as contenders (Cllr Crosby has historically taken a significant vote in the Strokestown area).

The two ‘Young Turks’ being talked about in Strokestown are community activists Rory Williams-Doyle and Jonathan Cassidy.

Mr Doyle has been an active community member in recent years. A software developer by trade and a trainee barrister, he volunteers with several community groups in the Strokestown area and is an active member of Sinn Féin.

Last Friday evening, the 27th of October, Mr Doyle secured the Sinn Féin nomination to contest the local elections alongside established councillor Michael Mulligan of Ballaghaderreen.

Articulate and bright, Mr Doyle will put pressure on others in this area.

The other potential candidate from the

BOYLE

ROSCOMMON

ATHLONE Strokestown area is Jonathon Cassidy.

From a well-known family, Mr Cassidy is a nurse in Mullingar Regional Hospital. In recent years, he has been extremely proactive with local community groups such as Strokestown Tidy Towns and Strokestown Town Team.

Mr Cassidy’s political affiliations are not publicly declared but his track record as a hard worker and well organised activist would likely make him a serious contender for a seat, regardless of his political persuasion.

The Fianna Fáil void

With sitting Boyle MD Fianna Fáil councillors John Cummins and Joe Murphy indicating they won’t be running in 2024, Fianna Fáil has a body of work ahead of them to fill the void.

Boyle will elect at least one councillor; it simply must, given its population, especially when you consider its large rural hinterland. There is the potential for the town to elect perhaps two councillors, which would be a shock to the status quo in the area. But who will the largest town in the MD elect?

Sources advise me that Sinn Féin are considering running a third candidate in the MD, with a potential nomination coming out of the Arigna area, in the north. Such a nomination would create a phenomenal candidate spread for the previously lethargic Sinn Féin organisation in the area.

Community activist Noel McTiernan

was touted ahead of the 2019 local elections as a possible independent contender in the north of the MD, following his successful efforts to improve road safety at the Cootehall and Croghan junctions. With John Cummins bowing out, perhaps the stage is set for the effective community organiser to make a run.

Or will Keith Suffin of Fine Gael, a local from the Boyle area, who managed to pull a respectable 622 first preference votes in 2019, manage to take a seat this time out? Mr Suffin stayed in contention for a seat right up to the seventh and final count in 2019, at which stage he had amassed 1,076 votes. 200 additional first preferences, or a similar number of additional transfers, could see him take a seat.

Wind at their back

By all accounts, Sinn Féin’s Michael Mulligan appears to be an immovable object in Ballaghaderreen. A longstanding member of the Council, Cllr Mulligan has historically been able to reach outside of the Sinn Féin tent and

How did it all go down in 2019?

Keith Suffin from Boyle was narrowly beaten by Cllr Joe Murphy in 2019, with the bulk of Andrew Reynolds’ transfer on the seventh count transferring locally to Joe Murphy rather than along party lines.

Independent candidate Sajjad Hussain, from Ballaghaderreen, garnered a healthy first preference vote of 527. If Mr Hussain was to contest the next election, he would be worth an each-way bet, especially in light of his having stayed in the fight until the fifth count in 2019.

A regular contender for Fianna Fáil over the years has been Aidan Sampey from Frenchpark. Regularly getting the nod from the party and finding himself on the ticket, he has historically struggled to gather enough first preferences to get into contention. With Joe Murphy bowing out of the race, perhaps Mr Sampey will be in contention for a seat if he can be supported by the powerful Murphy machine.

Conclusion

With so much political volatility in the air, Fine Gael may well fancy its chances in the upcoming local elections. If the party focuses on a two-candidate strategy, with the aim of electing two councillors, it might pull off a coup and take a seat from Fianna Fáil, especially given the leadership vacuum in the area. It’s hard to see Sinn Féin taking two seats in this MD, but it was also hard to imagine the party securing a Dáil seat in 2020 and yet it did precisely that.

It is far too early to make any prediction for the local election, particularly given how wide open the field is to new contenders. However, despite inevitable shifts, it is difficult to see any major upsets taking place; the majority of the ‘Old Guard’ seem secure for the time being.

If I were to place a bet at this juncture, the shifts in the political landscape are more likely to come from the retirement of sitting councillors than a significant upsurge in support for any new candidate.

Three CRAOL awards for RosFM

Pictured at the annual CRAOL awards held in Athlone on Thursday night were Bernie Kearney (Chairperson, RosFM), Therese Hanly (presenter, RosFM), Ciara Lawless (RosFM), and Seamus Duke (station manager, RosFM).

RosFM, Roscommon’s only community radio station, won three major awards at the annual CRAOL (Community Radio Forum of Ireland) conference, which was held recently in Athlone.

The ‘Traditional Irish Music and Folk Show’, presented by local musician Therese Hanly, won a silver award for her innovation in bringing in local musicians to share their stories and play their music live on air.

Three Ukrainian women who settled in Roscommon Town due to the war in their country and who presented a weekly 30-minute segment called ‘Our Friends From Ukraine’ which outlined many aspects of Ukrainian life and culture won a Gold award. That programme was also selected for a ‘Standout Award’ as one of the best radio programmes of the year on community radio nationally.

Speaking after the conference, station manager Seamus Duke said that the awards were a recognition of the effort that was being put in by the 35 volunteers who work at the station.

“I am thrilled for Therese Hanly and for our Ukrainian friends, but this award is also for the many volunteers who contribute to RosFM every week and who work very hard to keep the station on the air”, he said. “It is great recognition for the station on a national stage and it proves that RosFM can produce top class programming on a consistent basis”.

FRANK BRANDON’S unique take on life ...

Life begins at 40 (plus) for thriving Creggs Harvest Festival! bards, including yours truly, recited their compositions in an attempt to win the Vinny Keaveney Memorial trophy, along with a very attractive monetary award of €500.

John Ralph from outside Ballygar was a very worthy and deserving winner, while sadly, although not surprisingly, my effort did not make it into the prize-winning enclosure – the first four got varying amounts of prize-money, while all ten of us got nice certificates. What amazed me was the fact that there were almost 100 entries. On the night there were bards from Tramore, Monaghan, Raheny, and Sligo in attendance, while second prize went to an entrant from Clonakilty, Co. Cork, who was unable to make it.

Our own Mary White was called on to recite three entries for people who couldn’t be there, and she was so good you would swear she had written them herself. Anyway, it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and a new experience for me, and I have to say that I had picked John Ralph out as author of the best offering on the night, so well done John, your poem was just fantastic.

Our man Frank reports on another successful annual Creggs Harvest Festival; On making his debut as a ‘budding bard’… and how Ireland’s World Cup exit proved costly for publicans It’s Bank Holiday Monday as I write, and yet another Harvest Festival is almost over. For something that is more than 40 years old, the good news is that it is alive and well. As they say, there’s life in the old dog yet!

Friday night kicked off with stylist Maria Carton helping the large crowd of ladies present with some tips on how to look your best, while both quizzes, junior and senior, were well attended. I don’t know why there was no stylist for us men, but I suppose we look so well we couldn’t be made to look any better.

After the quizzes and the style forum (doubt if that’s the right word), it was the turn of the Boogeymen to take the stage in Mikeen’s, and as I told you before, they are (and were) just brilliant. The enthusiastic audience were hopping and bopping around the place.

Now I have to say that over the entire weekend the quality of the music in both pubs was top class, with Strings & Things wowing the crowd in Gannon’s on Saturday night, and country star Jason Travers doing the same on Sunday night. Down in Mikeen’s, local lad Sean Donoghue was in top form on Saturday night, aided by a lady whose name I don’t know but who was superb on the fiddle. Then on Sunday night, young Kenneth McCormack went down a treat with his wonderfully diverse repertoire.

It’s a pity that music has almost died out in country pubs, but last weekend proved that the talent is certainly there – all that’s needed is the market.

In case you think that there was nothing else on except public house activities, the dog show, craft fair, fancy dress parade, and bake sale were all well attended, while the Eleanor Shanley and Mike Hanrahan concert on Sunday evening was a highlight for a number of our festival visitors.

aney memorial football match between the Mountain and the Valley, and after an epic battle the Valley beat their much-vaunted rivals by a goal – the final score being 3-11 to 2-11.

The late Paul Devaney was a member of a renowned footballing family, a former Creggs player himself, and a man who was called from this life way too early. The huge crowd that turned up for the game was a fitting tribute to his memory – seasoned observers reckoned the crowd was the biggest seen in Creggs all year, even for league or championship fixtures!

his wife Olga presented Creggs GAA Club with a bench which will be placed outside the dressing rooms as a permanent reminder of the time the popular physio spent with us. On our behalf, the club commissioned a framed photo of Oleg, which will be placed at the entrance to the dressing rooms so the players that he looked after so well will see his smiling face every time they walk in the door.

When all the formalities were completed, the players and committee members, along with Olga and their daughter, and All-Ireland referee Shane Curley, who officiated at the Mountain/Valley game, retired to the school hall for a beautiful meal served by the Maloney brothers of Delicious Catering. Afterwards, the craic was

great as the Valley boys celebrated their win. The truth is that nothing compares to the rivalry that can exist between the two distinct areas of our half-parish.

Anyway, the cup rests for this year down here in the Valley, and it will be 12 long months before the Mountain lads get a chance to win it back – it will seem like a lifetime.

Budding Bards!

It’s now Monday evening, and I have just got back from the Bard of Connacht competition, where ten budding

As the rugby World Cup came to an end on Saturday night, it seems that publicans around the country are counting the cost of Ireland’s failure to qualify for the semi-final – a match against Argentina that we would almost certainly have won.

That would have put us into a World Cup final, and in the words of Kerry publican Ollie Favier, who owns two pubs in the Kingdom, “if we made it past the quarter-finals, we would have had two more bumper days”, which would have brought them through to this Bank Holiday weekend. He said it all fell completely flat on its face after our exit, with the last two rugby weekends being nonevents (for publicans).

It’s funny how everything is connected, and while we were all sad at our exit, we didn’t really think of the knock-on financial impact of our quarter-final loss. I know it’s four years away again, but if only to keep our publicans happy, please lads get to the semi-final at least!

The Roscommon Association in Dublin will remember its deceased members, friends and supporters, as well as those of the former Roscommon GAA Supporters Club, at its 63rd annual Mass, taking place at 11 am on Sunday, November 5th, in St Columba’s Church, Iona Road, Glasnevin, Dublin.

The following who died during the past year will be particularly remembered at the Mass: James Carley (Rathcoole and Strokestown), Liam Connellan (Foxrock and Strokestown), and Theresa Murray (Navan), widow of the late Joe Murray (Strokestown).

For those who may not be able to attend, the Mass will be streamed live on ionaroadparish.ie Following the Mass, the Association invites members and friends to join them for the customary lunch at the Maples House Hotel adjacent to the church. The 70th Annual General Meeting of the Association will be held immediately after lunch.

Great turnout at reactivation of Kilbride Active Age

On Wednesday of last week, there was a great turnout at the reactivation of the Kilbride Active Age group.

All-Ireland baker Margaret Sexton gave a talk on making barmbrack and scones and provided recipes for same, which were enjoyed with a cuppa on the day.

Patricia Kearney had a Halloween colours-themed flower arrangement, and a pumpkin lit up and decorated with fruit, nuts, and lights to add to the theme. Ciaran Mullooly of Roscommon LEADER advised the group on how to go forward for the future.

There was a further meeting on Tuesday of this week, and our next meeting will take place at 2 pm on Tuesday, November 7th. This meet-up will consist of a visit to Strokestown House and Famine Museum. The community bus is available to collect members. It was good to see new members attending, and as always, all are welcome.

The blessing of graves will take place in Kilbride this weekend on Sunday, November 5th. A blessing of graves will take place at Ballinderry cemetery at 12 noon, and a collection for the maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery will also take place on the day. Another blessing of graves will take place at Derrane at 1 pm.

Confirmation of temporary library in Ballaghaderreen

A temporary library for Ballaghaderreen will be opened in the former Tusla office (near SuperValu) in the town.

This is pending the reopening of Ballaghaderreen Library at Dillon House in the third quarter of 2024.

Sinn Féin TD for Roscommon/Galway Claire Kerrane received an update from Minister Heather Humphreys last week. Deputy Kerrane said, “I am glad that while works are completed in Dillion House, a temporary library will be opened at the former Tusla office up near SuperValu. I have repeatedly said that while the mobile library has been available, it is no replacement to a library building. The library in Ballaghaderreen was never just books – it was an essential social hub for people of all ages.

“While it has taken a long time, particularly due to the legalities, I am glad that the temporary library, operated by Roscommon County Council, will open and this will be done as quickly as possible once a change of use planning permission is granted”.

Deputy Kerrane said that while the reopening of the library is taking longer than anyone expected, it will reopen.

“It has taken far longer than anyone would have liked but as a listed building, planning permission was required at various stages, a tender for mechanical and electrical consultants for the project last year received no bids, and this process had to be started for a second time – all of this meant more and more delays”.

She said she has been advised by Roscommon County Council that invitation to tender will be published before Christmas.

“Roscommon County Council have advised that pending a successful tender invitation and the appointment of a building contractor in early 2024, the proposed works are identified as requiring 32 weeks to complete, which will result in the project being completed in late summer/ autumn 2024, with the library at Dillon House to reopen in Q3 2024”.

Launch of Boyle author John Mulligan’s ‘American Parcel’ Launch is on November 11th Roscommon County Council awards an annual bursary to the winner of its Chapbook Competition. A chapbook is a small book of short stories or poetry, and the bursary is a grant that covers the cost of publication.

Previous winners have included poets Sinéad McClure and Rory Duffy, and authors Anne Byrne and Kevin Hora.

This year’s winner is Boyle author John Mulligan, with his short story collection ‘American Parcel,’ a collection of four American-themed stories. The book will be launched in King House Tearooms at 3 pm on Saturday, November 11th, by Senator Eugene Murphy. Copies of the publication will be

available at the launch, priced just €5, and all the money from the sales will be used to help defray some of the costs of the annual King House Christmas lunch.

With the aid of some volunteer staff, Dorothy Shannon (the popular owner of the King House Tearoom business) provides a Christmas lunch each year for anyone in Boyle who is alone at Christmas. The author is delighted to show his support for this altruism and hard work by helping in some way with the expense of providing this fantastic local service.

So, make a note of the time and date, come along and enjoy a glass of nice wine or a coffee, and buy a copy or two of the book. Everyone is welcome, bring a friend if you like, and let’s start Christmas early!

Roscommon success at Connacht Scór Final St Brigid’s Hall in Tubbercurry played host to the Connacht GAA Scór Sinsir Final 2023 on Saturday last. The cream of GAA talent from across the province gathered in the Sligo town to contest Connacht GAA’s cultural showpiece and earn the right to represent club and county in the All Ireland Scór Sinsir Final.

The first event for decision was the Tráth na gCeisteanna Boird.

After challenging rounds of questions, Bornacoola (Leitrim), Castlebar Mitchels (Mayo) and Kilglass Gaels (Roscommon) qualified from the preliminary table quiz at the expense of Caltra (Galway) and St Molaise Gaels (Sligo). In the stage final, it was the Leitrim representatives who came out on top, with Mayo and Roscommon placing

second and third respectively.

The Rince Foirne competition saw teams from Aghamore (Mayo), Mohill (Leitrim) and St Dominic’s (Roscommon), turn in graceful performances of their dances. It was the Leitrim standard bearers who took top honours and secured their place in the national final.

The Amhránaíocht Aonair event was hotly contested. John Butler (St Mary’s, Leitrim), Christina Ralph (Castlebar, Mayo), Sarah Snee (Eastern Harps, Sligo) and Orla Hession (Abbeyknockmoy) delivered great renditions of their songs. But it was Sarah Keane of St Dominic’s, Roscommon, who won the hearts of the adjudicators with her performance.

In the Recitation/Storytelling, Aidan Dockery (Bornacoola,

Leitrim), Patrick Mullooly (St. Dominic’s, Roscommon) and Saoirse White (Sligo) challenged strongly before giving way to Mayo champion, Kevin Henry (Ballyhaunis). His delivery proved very popular with the large crowd, securing Mayo’s only win of the night.

In the Ballad Group competition, Abbeyknockmoy gave a spellbinding performance on route to winning the coveted provincial crown. In doing so, they overcame the gallant efforts of Bornacoola (Leitrim), Padraig Pearses (Roscommon) and Ballyhaunis (Mayo).

In the Novelty Act competition, the challenge of Kilfian(Mayo) and Abbeyknockmoy (Galway) gave way to Elphin of Roscommon. The Roscommon actors

entertained the audience with their humorous take on the Irish Dancing Feis and in doing they secured their club’s second title of the night.

The Ceol Uirlise, while short on entries, delivered some of the evening’s highest standard in competition. Elphin and Abbeyknockmoy both gave fantastic performances of their tunes. But it was the top class delivery of the Galway group which got the nod from the adjudicators.

Abbeyknockmoy finished off a hugely successful night with a win in the Rince Seit, ensuring a hat-trick of titles for the East Galway club. Pitted against them were St Dominic’s (Roscommon) and Sean Ó’Heslin’s of Leitrim. The Galway champions delivered a rousing performance

of the Longford Set. A huge well done to all the competitors who represented their clubs and counties on Saturday.

A massive word of thanks to the committee of St Brigid’s Hall for their assistance and help to ensure the event ran smoothly. A word of appreciation also to our wonderful Bean an Tí, Aoife Ní Chonghaile, who kept proceedings efficiently moving, and to our Quiz Master, Eamonn Brennan and the adjudicators for their diligent services.

The All Ireland Scór Sinsir Final will be held in the INEC Killarney on Saturday, November 18th.

This will be an all-ticket event and County Cultural Officers/ Scór committees will be in contact in the coming days with details and more information.

Roscommon student awarded PhD bursary Roscommon student Kevin Mullaney has been awarded the PhD Kappeler Bursary to undertake research at the National Centre of Excellence for Home Economics, ATU St Angela’s.

Kevin, who is from Croghan in Co. Roscommon, is a recent past graduate of the Home Economics and Biology teacher education professional Masters programme. He was recently awarded the opportunity of a full bursary to undertake the PhD Home Economics programme based on the innovative approach displayed in relation to his chosen research topic and his overall enthusiasm for Home Economics as a discipline.

ATU St Angela’s have a proud 70-year reputation in delivering Home Economics education. The National Centre of Excellence for Home Economics at the ATU St Angela’s Campus provides a key platform for the growth and development of the discipline Home Economics and is a vehicle through which Home Economics teaching and research continues to be developed and extended.

Remembering Perry as a sobriety advocate first, and as Chandler second Let’s talk about ...

As I would assume is the case with most people, the immediate association I make when I hear the name Matthew Perry is the role he played in Friends as the witty and goofy-yetcharming Chandler Bing.

And it’s not because I’m a super avid Friends fan or anything; it’s more so down to how inescapably iconic the show and its characters are. The ubiquity of Friends as a TV staple and cultural reference, and its immense popularity during its airing and still now – even decades after its end, even among generations who were born long after it started – has made the unshakable association that now exists between its actors and characters kind of unavoidable.

It’s the same for all six main cast members; you might know them for other stuff too, or like them better for other work of theirs, but in the case of most people, it’s probably safe to say that if you think of Jennifer Aniston, you think of Rachel; Matt LeBlanc, Joey; David Schwimmer, Ross; Courteney Cox, Monica; Lisa Kudrow, Phoebe – and Matthew Perry, Chandler.

That is why, when news broke this week that Matthew Perry had passed away in his Los Angeles home at the age of 54, most outlets included a reference to this role in the headline – prefaced his name with ‘Friends actor’, or followed it up with a “best known for playing Chandler Bing” etc. Which makes sense. Putting what a celebrity is best known for when reporting about them is so commonplace, that it normally wouldn’t be notable at all. I mention it only because of a quote of Perry’s that began circling last year, shortly after he released his memoir, and which has been doing the rounds again now following his passing.

Last year, during a podcast appearance promoting his new book, Perry spoke about the other major thing (apart from Friends) that people have come to associate with him: his journey with addiction – a journey which eventually led to him becoming a passionate sobriety advocate, particularly in recent years. Referring to this work, Perry said, “When I die, I don’t want Friends to be the first thing that’s mentioned. I want that to be the first thing that’s mentioned and I’m going to live the rest of my life proving that”. The memoir itself reportedly shares the same sentiment, with Perry adding, “I know it won’t happen, but it would be nice”.

Evidently, he was right in this prediction. Not even solely in the way noted earlier, with headlines reporting his death unwaveringly referencing his part on the ‘90s sitcom, but in the reactions from the public too. Online tribute after online tribute make reference to the show or his character, sharing artwork with the caption, ‘The One Where We Lost a Friend,’ (in a nod to the Friends episode

title format). His former castmates’ reactions are among the top related searches around his passing. The memorial for him created by fans in New York City is located outside the building used as the exterior shot for Chandler’s apartment. The examples go on…

And of course there’s been this reaction. Friends is a beloved show. Chandler is a beloved character.

And it’s undeniable that Matthew Perry delivers in the role, undeniable what his acerbic comedic chops and acting ability added to the show – his performance, after all, did win him an Emmy.

But as correct as Perry was in calling that people would talk about Friends when he passed before they talk about anything else, he was just as correct to remark how much more valuable it might be if his work as a sobriety advocate took precedence.

Perry’s struggles with alcoholism and addiction, the ups and downs he went through on his journey towards sobriety, have been a highly publicised topic for a very long time. And over the years,

sometimes it’s been handled empathetically, yes, but very often, it’s just been used as tabloid fodder, his rehab visits used as a scandal to splash across gossip rags. This is not a case unique to Perry (although his lead role on one of the most popular shows of all time surely exacerbated the ‘scandal’ angle), it’s how we for a long time have treated stories of celebrity drug use and addiction.

It’s sort of indicative of the attitude we hold towards addiction that stories centred around those dealing with it are treated as scandalous, as opposed to acknowledging the seriousness and debilitating nature of addiction as a disease. I feel it can only feed into the line of thinking that addiction is an inherently shameful thing, something that shouldn’t be given mention to. And given how many people struggle to open up about having issues with substance use in the first place, this is just a recipe for more harm.

Addiction is something we need to talk about more, and something we need to understand a whole lot better. The same way our approach towards mental health struggles have evolved radically in recent years, we need to be doing the same for addiction so we can actually help those who struggle with it.

This is something Perry understood. His memoir has been praised for its candid honesty and his openness around addiction, which many have cited as having directly bolstered their commitment to sobriety. He spoke regularly about what addiction is, how it actually affects people, and how to actually help people get better, during his public appearances. He strove to help others in more direct ways too; he converted his mansion in Malibu into a sober living house. He became a spokesman for the National Association of Drug Court Professionals.

Perry was right to predict Friends would be the first thing people spoke about after he passed.

There was no changing that, and it’s not a bad thing. But hopefully as time goes on, his legacy extends beyond the show, and the impact he had as a sobriety advocate in humanising addiction, fostering understanding and compassion, and directly helping people will get its due appreciation too.

HeArt4U calendars for sale in aid of Irish Cancer Society The Community Art Group Ballaghaderreen has published a calendar for 2024 in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. The calendar is made in loving memory of two members who sadly passed away due to illness: Mary Caulfield, one of the founders of the group, and Kathleen Harford, who was a member for nine years.

The images contained in the calendar are reproductions from the group’s HeArt4U project. As part of the HeArt4U project, the group produced a number of small 10x10cm canvases with different

artwork, all featuring a heart, which were offered to the public for free, the aim being to make art available for everyone. The canvases were wrapped in cellophane and distributed in public places for people to find and take home. The group hopes the hearts put a smile on people’s faces, and that with this calendar, even more people are able to enjoy them.

The calendar is currently for sale in nine outlets in Ballaghaderreen: BB Hair, Molloy’s Pharmacy, Brian Mulligan’s, Michael Mulligan’s, Padhraig Mulli-

gan’s, Newsround, School Supplies, SuperValu, and Imelda Towey’s.

Mary Rose and Louise are winners of Hanna Greally Awards 2023

Two top class literary works won the adult prizes at the annual Hanna Greally Literary Awards held in Roscommon Library on Saturday, October 21st. The event was organised as part of the annual Siarscéal Literary Festival.

Announcing the two winners at the event, Gwen McNamara Bond, the founder member of Siarscéal back in 2006, pointed to the “exceptional number of entries this year, with the work being of an extremely high standard”.

She said she was thrilled to announce the two winning adult entries for 2023: Mary Rose Tobin, who won with her short story, ‘The Life and Times of Jimmy Mullins’, and Louise G Cole, who won with her winning poem, ‘My Heart is a Bow Shaped Kintsugi’.

At the event, Ruairí Ó hAodha of Roscommon Library, and Mary Branley, the new Creative Coordinator of Siarscéal, congratulated all those who had been short-listed and said it was great to see the large volume of entries.

They also congratulated the winners of the Siarscéal competition for young people, and presented prizes to Dana, Robin, Caoimhe, Abigail and Erica in this catego-

ry, after which they each read from their work, to the delight of the attendance. These new, emerging local authors’ works will be broadcast on RosFM in the coming weeks.

From Roscommon to the Tate Modern and back!

Strokestown-born artist Siobhan Cox-Carlos has had an even bigger adventure since her travels in 2019/20, when she went full-time in her art practice as a painter and visual artist.

When Siobhan randomly went to an evening class in painting back in the 1980s, little did she think that it would become her passion and give her a life full of amazing opportunities. She went to college in GMIT and Limerick College of Art and Design where she was awarded an honour degree in Fine Art in 2004.

Some of the opportunities Siobhan has had include showing her work in solo and group shows, both here at home in Ireland and over in America and Europe. She has had her work hung alongside some of the greatest artists such as Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol (in Fort Lauderdale, Florida) and George Braque (Miami). She is represented in the North of Ireland by Hambly and Hambly where she was a finalist in the first John Richard French Residency Award two years ago.

Siobhan shows her work regularly here in Ireland, and this year alone she has shown in Cuige Studios, Mullingar, Boyle Arts Festival, BallaghDREAM, and King House on Culture Night. She is now preparing for Art Source, the national Arts Fair of Ireland, which is held in the RDS in Dublin.

Roscommon County Council and the Local Enterprise Office have been a fantastic support to Siobhan over the years.

Social media plays a huge part in reaching one’s audience and it is where Siobhan, along with two other women,

last year set up an international art group with women from America, Australia, Italy, England and Ireland. They launched their group ‘Global ARTelier21’ online last year and had their first in-person group show in The YAH Factory Milan last May. This was a huge success, so much so that the gallery toured it to their sister gallery on the French border. They are planning another group show for next year.

Over the past two years, Siobhan had many Artist-in-Residencies in schools throughout Roscommon and Longford, where she decided to concentrate on murals, which gives her the opportunity to work on a large scale, which she so enjoys.

Siobhan will have work hanging in Áras an Chontae (Council HQ) in Roscommon in the coming weeks. She will be exhibiting her newest works: three portraits of famous Roscommon figures, which were shown first in King House in Boyle on Culture Night. *Siobhan has some tickets available for Art Source which takes place from the 10th to 12th of November. Castlerea MART WATCH There was a big turnout of cattle on Thursday last as a result of the recent inclement weather conditions. Trade and prices have remained firm with a good attendance of customers present.

The heifer ring witnessed a good demand for the quality stores, with a top price of €2240 paid for a 555kg Charolais heifers or €4.03 a kilo. The weanling rings reported good numbers on offer with the bulls peaking at €4.50 a kilo while a whopping €3420 was paid for a 370kg Limousin heifer or €9.24 a kilo, a price that left one local suckler farmer very happy. Dry cows peaked at €1990 while cows with calves at foot hit €1890.

Smell the blossoms (A plea by James M Moran)

Note the luxurious whitethorn blooms and symmetry of field shapes: we have such a beautiful countryside of sheer magic and beauty – and some of it man-made.

Hedgerows have no preservation status in legal terms, except for limited protection during bird breeding season, which is impossible to police.

These linear nature reserves are the equivalent of the rain forests in the Irish context. They are the breeding, feeding, and safe places for flora, fauna, entomology and other. They sustain our pollinators and are one of the most important

elements in keeping the environment stable and healthy. With their banks, ditches, and grassy, shrubby headlands, they act as low-maintenance flood and pollution control barriers, slowing and absorbing water runoff.

With the return of landlord-type farming, with its industrial system of land management, farm purchase, and leasing, the first casualties are the hedges and field systems, done in favour of making large open tracts for the use of machinery and the growth of sterile mono-crops that depend on artificial inputs to grow. These environmental threats must be checked.

No sanction will compensate for the loss of a hedgerow that is hundreds of years old. Even if

restored, its own ecosystem cannot recover.

This is no romanticism for the old sod. It is the fact that as we destroy and desecrate the natural world, our health and quality of life is also destroyed. We must be aware that what is pleasing and beneficial to us all is not obliterated for the financial gain of the greedy few.

Smell the blossoms in spring, hear the bees hum in summer, pick the berries in autumn and shelter from the storm in winter. Bob (Dylan) said, “the times they are a changing”. He also asked, “where have all the flowers gone?”

What will we tell our grandchildren? That we did not care? This fate must not befall our hedgerows.

Fitzmaurice accuses President Higgins of ‘bare-faced hypocrisy’ Independent TD for Roscommon-Galway Michael Fitzmaurice has vehemently criticised President Michael D Higgins for recent remarks in which he called for more to be done for Irish citizens facing flash flooding. While expressing his solidarity with those affected, Deputy Fitzmaurice didn’t mince words in calling out what he perceives as “barefaced hypocrisy” on the part of the President.

Deputy Fitzmaurice says that President Higgins, during his tenure as a government minister, had signed the Habitats Directive into Irish law on the 26th of February, 1997.

According to Fitzmaurice, this statutory instrument has been det-

rimental to the people of Ireland: “Of course everything should be done for those affected, as is the case when all acts of God and natural disasters impact on people, but the bare-faced hypocrisy is sickening: Michael D is the very man who, when he was a government minister, signed the Habitats Directive into Irish law, a directive that makes it harder to help people impacted by flooding.

“This is the statutory instrument that has been directly responsible for the delaying and abandoning of hundreds of infrastructure projects across the country.

“All over the country, local authorities and people cannot even do the ‘real world’ emergency

works needed to prevent or alleviate flooding which puts their lands, homes, and businesses at risk, because Europe’s definition of an emergency, as defined in ECJ judgements, says an emergency must be constant and ongoing.

“In Ireland, the European Communities (Natural Habitats) Regulations 1997 (S.I. No. 94/1997) was signed to transpose the Habitats Directive, which is part of the Natura 2000 framework.

“The impact of this statute is such that before you can get planning permission in this country, you need to satisfy 38 different consents related to the Habitats Directive. And even if a person complies with the environmental

impact assessments, hydrology assessments, ecological screenings, etc., they could still find themselves in court with a challenge under this directive.

“The then-Minister Higgins was either not cognisant of the broader environmental and land use issues which his policies would cause, or he didn’t care. Neither are acceptable in my book.

“To be honest, Michael D should apologise to the people of Ireland for laying the foundation for Europe to be able today to restrict our use and enjoyment of huge swathes of our lands. And he should also apologise to the emergency service workers who are on the ground in flood-stricken areas, actually helping the people”.

Clarification needed on access to Knowledge Transfer opportunities for women and young farmers – Kerrane Sinn Féin spokesperson on Agriculture, Claire Kerrane TD, has called for clarity to be provided on eligibility for the new Knowledge Transfer (KT) Programme.

Concerns have been raised that eligibility criteria for the KT Programme may require participants to be herd keepers rather than joint herd owners, which in turn could result in many women farmers and young farmers being excluded from the opportunity.

Speaking on the issue, Deputy Kerrane said, “The new Knowledge Transfer Programme is really welcome and will no doubt build on the valuable guidance, advice and targeted skills development that the previous programme delivered. However, it is really concerning that many women farmers and young farmers may be locked out of this opportunity as a result of the programme’s eligibility criteria.

“It appears that there may be a requirement in the Department’s terms and conditions for the scheme that participants be herd keepers rather than joint herd owners.

Many women in agriculture and young farmers will be

part of farm partnerships and are often a joint herd owner, rather than the registered herd keeper. That the Department only allow for one herd keeper is an ongoing issue which representative groups, such as the Women in Agriculture Stakeholder Group (WASG), have long raised with the minister.

“This an issue the minister and his Department will be well aware of, and it would be incredibly disappointing if eligibility for the KT Programme is hinged on participants being herd keepers, rather than allowing for joint herd owners to participate too.

“I have sought clarity on the criteria for the scheme and would urge the minister to make clear that joint herd owners will be eligible to take part in the Knowledge Transfer Programme.

“The minister has repeatedly stated his ambition to support women in agriculture and young farmers, but this must be reflected in access to schemes and opportunities which support knowledge transfer and skills development amongst those groups”, concluded Deputy Kerrane.

by MEP Colm Malarkey regarding the European Parliament mission to Donegal to discuss deleterious material in concrete products.

MEP Flanagan said, “I read and listened with astonishment to the comments of Fine Gael MEP Colm Markey. He states that it’s ‘quite significant’ that politicians from Europe are coming to Ireland and that ‘The EU is listening’.

“It’s quite significant alright. The reason they are here in the first place is because those people affected were not listened to and are still not being listened to by his Government. This is the very reason I, along with colleagues from the Left Group in the European Parliament, organised this mission.

The very reason why I suggested to the campaigners in the first place that they should petition the European Parliament’s PETI committee.

“For three days MEPs have met with those families affected. They have sat in destroyed kitchens.

They have stood in mouldy and damp bedrooms. They have listened to their stories. Stories laced with sheer frustration. Frustration that this happened in the first place.

Frustration at what is an impossible puzzle of a redress scheme.

Frustration and despair that this

is still happening to this very day.

Frustration at local and national government for a complete and utter failure to carry out market surveillance of construction products.

“When I first heard that Fine Gael MEPs would be attending, I was surprised to say the least. Given that the only reason the event needed to be held in the first place was because Fine Gael has let people down for years.

“Another reason why I was sur-

prised to hear MEP Markey’s comments was because those attending had been requested not to speak to the press in advance of the mission”.

MEP Flanagan concluded, saying, “Now that the mission is completed, the committee has the information that it needs to write a report, which will help unlock people from the prison of despair that they have been put in. Particular thanks must be given to the PETI committee Chair Delores Montserrat MEP. Without her attendance this mission would not have taken place”.

TFI Local Link enhances bus service from Castlerea to Sligo via Ballaghaderreen TFI Local Link Donegal Sligo Leitrim is enhancing bus services from Castlerea to Sligo via Ballaghaderreen from Monday next, the 6th of November.

This enhancement is part of the Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan, which is a major national public transport initiative developed and funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA) as part of the Transport for Ireland (TFI) Network.

Route 977 will be enhanced to operate up to eight daily return services Monday to Saturday between Sligo and Ballaghaderreen – four of which will extend to Castlerea – and three daily return services on Sunday, with all services extending to Castlerea.

Uisce Éireann says its investment in Ireland’s wastewater infrastructure is benefiting communities around the country by supporting sustainable growth and development, enhancing water quality and protecting the environment, with Roscommon Town, Ballaghaderreen and Lecarrow among the local areas to benefit recently.

The latest EPA Urban Wastewater Treatment Report, published recently, shows the progress being made in tackling long-running issues like raw sewage discharges, while also underlining the need for continued investment in our essential wastewater services.

2022 saw the highest annual investment in wastewater to date (over €450m) as Uisce Éireann continues to make progress in priority areas such as locations where there is raw sewage entering the rivers, lakes and the sea, sites identified by the European Court of Justice under the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive and sites where urban wastewater is a significant pressure.

For those plants that are not currently achieving compliance, Uisce Éireann has a plan of action to address any deficiencies and bring them up to the appropriate standard as quickly as possible.

In County Roscommon, this investment by Uisce Éireann has led to improved wastewater treatment in a number of communities, including Roscommon Town.

The Roscommon Town Main Drainage Scheme, which is due for completion before the end of this year, will increase the capacity of the sewer network, allowing for population growth.

Uisce Éireann’s update on investment and works in wastewater infrastructure

There was a very large entry of stock on offer at last Friday’s Special Heifer Sale with over 600 on offer.

Heifers fetched an average of €2.71 per kilo up to €3.91 per kilo. There was also a larger entry of dry cows and they made an average of €1.83 per kilo up to €2.38 per kilo.

There was a good entry of top quality weanlings on offer at our sale held on Tuesday evening last with a very strong trade for both bulls and heifers. Bull weanlings fetched from an average of €3.01 per kilo up to €4.49 per kilo, while heifer weanlings made from an average of €2.73 per kilo up to €4.10.

We also had 30 in-calf heifers and these were met with a strong trade and a top price of €2,500 on the night.

There was a very good attendance of customers ringside for both sales, with online buyers also active.

Four Roads’ Connacht Club championship campaign ended at the first hurdle when they were defeated by impressive Mayo champions Tooreen in Athleague on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon.

The 2-14 tally amassed by the Roscommon kingpins might suggest this was a close contest, but Four Roads’ two goals came in the final four minutes of play when Tooreen had already more than comfortably secured their semi-final spot.

The first quarter was in fact competitive and hardfought, with Four Roads giving as good as they were getting at that stage. It was 0-4 apiece after 18 minutes, with Johnny Moran and Cathal Dolan particularly prominent for Shane Curley’s men.

But once Shane Boland got motoring for Tooreen, the Mayo side began to take control. Some of their passing, movement and score-taking was a joy to behold. They outscored the Roscommon men by 0-10 to 0-4 in the final 11 minutes of the first half, going in at the break leading by 0-14 to 0-7.

Four Roads needed a good start to the second half if they were to get back into contention. Instead, it was the Mayo team which started best, quickly putting the outcome beyond doubt. In the 34th minute Kenny Feeney capitalised on hesitancy in the Four Roads defence to fire home the first goal of the game, a strike which created a 12-point gap.

David Kenny and Stephan Coyne were majestic in the Tooreen half-back line as the Mayo team continued to march to victory. Cathal Dolan was keeping the scoreboard ticking over for Four Roads, but Tooreen’s gallop could not be halted. In the 46th minute Eoin Delaney took advantage of another mix-up in the Four Roads defence to crash home a second goal for the Mayo men, now 2-18 to 0-13 in front.

In fairness to Four Roads, they kept plugging away. Veteran Michéal Kelly blasted home a free from 25 metres for a brilliant goal in the 59th minute, and four minutes later – three minutes into injury-time – he converted a

penalty after Brendan Mulry had been fouled.

While those two late goals gave the scoreboard a more respectable look from the perspective of Four Roads, Tooreen had done more than enough to book another outing. Indeed a club that came close to All-Ireland intermediate glory earlier this year will be determined to go one better in this new campaign.

For Four Roads, it was another indication that although they are fresh from dominating the Roscommon championship, there is a big step up when they meet teams like Tooreen.

Death of pioneering jockey Helen McDonogh Helen McDonogh, wife of trainer Des and mother of jockey Declan, has passed away at the age of 82.

Using her maiden name, Helen Bryce-Smith rode in point-topoints, winning 109 races between 1959 and 1974, 34 of them on one horse called Still William.

She was one of a small band of pioneering women who lobbied to ride against the men in races under rules in the late 1960s, clearing the way for Nina Carberry, Katie Walsh, Rachael Blackmore, etc.

Her biggest success on the track was on Monksfield in the BMW Amateur Hurdle at Down Royal 1980, the 19th and final victory of the Champion Hurdle-winning stallion’s illustrious career. May she rest in peace.

BALLAGHADERREEN Well done to Marie Cassidy who won the ladies 18hole Stableford competition with 35 pts which was held over the weekend of the 20th of October.

Ogie Moran won the ladies 18-hole Stableford competition over the bank holiday weekend with 36 pts.

ROSCOMMON Congratulations to J Reilly who won the Roscommon Herald-sponsored men’s 18-hole competition with 43 pts. The competition was held on the 21st and 22nd of October.

P Quinn was the winner of the Ladies Christmas Hamper competition, which was held on the 28th and 29th, with a score of 35 pts, while C Walker won the weekly 9-hole competition with 21 pts.

Winter rules now in play: Please note winter rules are now in play which means there is placing on both the fairways and in the rough. Competitions will now be non-qualifying for handicap purposes.

Creggs RFC Report

Racing this weekend begins this afternoon (Thursday) over the jumps at Thurles, with tapes away for the first at 12.55 pm.

Tomorrow afternoon Down Royal has the first of two days of jump racing at 12.29 pm featuring the Grade 3 Bottlegreen Hurdle and there is evening racing on the allweather at Dundalk at 5.30 pm.

On Saturday the second day in Down Royal, featuring the Grade 1

Ladbrokes Champion Chase, has a 1.57 pm start.

On Sunday, Cork hosts the national fare featuring the Cork Grand National at 12.41 pm, with flat racing at headquarters on the Curragh.

Weather plays havoc Weather continues to play havoc with the calendar as Doncaster and Newbury fell on Friday, Newbury on Saturday, Leicester and Redcar on Monday, Bangor on Tuesday, Nottingham yesterday and Ffos Las tomorrow.

The Curragh went ahead on Tuesday after an early morning inspection.

Storm Babet has just left our shores but a new storm, Ciaran, is about to strike so keep checking if going racing.

Down Royal is unraceable at the moment after 25mm of rain on Tuesday night but is holding another inspection this morning to determine if its two-day fixture on Friday and Saturday can go ahead.

Thurles today goes ahead on soft ground with no inspection planned.

Terrestrial television coverage on Saturday features ten British races,

five from Weatherby (featuring two Grade 2 races), the bet365 Hurdle and bet365 Charlie Hall Chase, and five races from Ascot with two Premier Handicap Chases on ITV4.

It is Breeders Cup weekend in Santa Anita and there is coverage of five races on Friday on ITV3 and nine races on Saturday from the US track, also on ITV4.

Aidan O’Brien’s Diego Velazquez ran a disappointing 6 of 7 runner in Doncaster’s Futurity Stakes, won by Charlie Appleby’s Ancient Wisdom at 5/4f (ridden by William Buick) on Saturday.

Athenry-based trainers has a treble at Galway last weekend as the father and son pairing Paul and Jack Gilligan won the featured WB Gavin & Co Handicap Hurdle with Buddy One on Saturday.

In the following race, The Colm Quinn BMW Handicap Hurdle, Pat Kelly, a neighbour of the Gilligans, trained Shotgun Jack to win under Charlie O’Dwyer.

On Sunday the Gilligan team again combined to win the Ann Walsh Memorial Novice Hurdle with Sequestered. Both Gilligan horses could appear in Cheltenham later this month.

THE GAIN LINE

Creggs U-13s defeat Buccaneers

In what can be described as true rugby weather the Boys U-13 side took to the field at home for their third league game of the season versus Buccaneers.

The opening exchanges were even with both sides having good attacking opportunities, but it was Creggs who broke the deadlock on seven minutes with a converted try. Creggs dominated the next period of play but the weather played its part as conditions led to a high number of handling errors. With 15 minutes gone Buccaneers took a scoring opportunity very well, but with the conversion missed it left the score 7-5 to Creggs.

The second half would be a tale of defences rather than attack as both sides battled to gain the upperhand. A superb team defensive display from Creggs was the highlight of the second half. With only five minutes left Buccaneers came at Creggs in an attempt to score the winning try, but a staunch defensive

effort led to a knock-on and a two-point win for the Creggs.

This performance was a squad effort with everyone digging in when the backs were to the wall, a great trait for such a young squad. With two wins from three games the team moves on to play Ballina at home next weekend.

Boys U-17s Creggs played another round of the league on Sunday afternoon against Loughrea but lost the game 12 points to 20.

The team have great potential but have not gelled yet to get the winning performance they need.

Mini Blitz: On Saturday morning Creggs mini

rugby hosted Claremorris Colts RFC. Approximately 300 children from U-6s to U-11s attended.

Prior to the blitz Conor Galvin from Connacht Rugby held a coaching session for the Mini coaches.

Boys and Girls U-12s: Creggs RFC U-12s travelled in big numbers to the showgrounds in Galway to watch Connacht play Glasgow on Saturday afternoon. This trip involved welcoming the teams onto

the pitch and playing at half-time. Players got autographs and photos taken with the Connacht players afterwards.

World Cup Scratch Card: Creggs supporters had more interest in the Rugby World Cup final than expected as the buyer of the scratch card with the time of the first try won €1000. Congratulations to the winner and a big thank you to all those who sold and purchased tickets.

Lotto: The club lotto jackpot was not won and will now be €10,600 next weekend. The lucky dip winner was Fiachra Galvin. Please join and support the club.

The appeal of the GAA club championships was underlined once again

in Dr Hyde Park on Saturday last when St Michael’s, a small rural club from the north of the county, captured their first adult football title in 30 years – defeating one of the biggest clubs in the county, Clann na nGael, in the final.

They did it in some style too, playing some marvellous football as they swept Clann aside. This very enjoy-

able final also provided us with one of the best individual performances seen in a county final in many years at any level, as Michael’s centre half-forward and joint captain Fiachra Henry scored an incredible 2-12 (from play and frees) in what was an astounding display.

On a perfect day for football, the two teams provided the good-sized

attendance with some enterprising, attacking football early on, and with 16 minutes gone it was 0-4 apiece.

Neil Cox, Cathal Guckian, Fiachra Henry and Jack Lane were prominent for Michael’s, while Ronan Gavin, Cian McManus and Cian Fallon were doing well for Clann.

For a young player (he’s only 22) who had just delivered a once in a lifetime performance for his club in a county final, Fiachra Henry was remarkably composed when he spoke to the Roscommon People after the match. Henry contributed an amazing 2-12.

“It was a brilliant team performance out there today. We were slow to start but we really got going after 15 minutes in the first half. We got ahead and we drove on well in the second half”.

St Michael’s play open, attacking football, and Saturday’s game suited them.

“We like to play open football if we can, and we like to exploit the spaces.

It’s a brand of football everyone likes to see so we are glad we got a chance to do that today”.

The St Michael’s joint captain played down his own massive contribution by paying tribute to his teammates.

“The hard work from all the lads winning those frees played a huge part and was the difference between the teams today.

“We were a few points up coming into the second half but we were playing into a strong wind and we just drove on.

It was our day. It was a brilliant team performance” he concluded.

when Henry began to show his considerable array of skills, the Cootehall-based club started to pull away. Three points on the spin from Henry (two frees) opened a three-point gap, and four minutes before half-time their first goal arrived.

Jack Lane made a searing run into the heart of the Clann defence. His shot was well saved by Gary Mannion, but the ball rebounded to Lane and he passed across the square to the inrushing Fiachra Henry, who fisted to the net. Another pointed free from Henry ensured that Michael’s went in at the break leading by 1-8 to 0-5.

St Michael’s were superb in the second half. Led by the majestic Henry, they pulled further and further away. Between the 47th and 54th minutes they scored 1-4 without reply, with all those scores coming from the boot of the rampant Henry.

The goal came with six minutes to go – and it was a peach. Niall Sheerin did the spadework, before Henry put the ball in the top corner from 15 metres out. It was a spectacular way to cap his contribution on the day.

The final whistle brought about emotional scenes as the people of Cootehall, Corrigeenroe and Knockvicar and surrounding areas raced on to the field to acclaim their heroes.

30 barren years had been swept

away, and the celebrations will last long into the winter. Many a tear was shed as the cup was presented to joint captains Fiachra Henry and Brian Reynolds.

Apart from Fiachra Henry, Michael’s had other heroes too.

Neil Cox and Michael King were excellent in the full-back line, while further out the field Cathal Guckian, Alan O’Hara and Jack Lane featured prominently. One of the biggest cheers of the day was reserved for

club legend Ronan Cox, who came on as a sub in the 57th minute to play his part in the victory.

Clann can have no complaints.

They started well, but faded badly as the game went on. Veterans David Flynn and Graham Pettit did well, as did Cian McManus and Ronan Gavin. But this final will be remembered as the day when St Michael’s came back into the winners’ enclosure. It may well also be remembered as the ‘Fiachra Henry

final’, and with good reason too.

Credit also to the St Michael’s management team of Ciaran Kennedy and Daniel Beck (from Mohill) and locals Anthony Farry and Tom Conlon. Michael’s have had a marvellous year, winning the Tansey Cup and now adding the championship. Their next task will be to consolidate at intermediate level.

But that’s for 2024. For now, the winter will be short one for everyone involved.

Great wins for Castlerea and St Michael’s

What an exciting weekend that was on the GAA club front locally!

Let’s take Saturday first. I have fond memories of calling to Cootehall while (occasionally) boating on the River Shannon over the years, and a stop-off to O’Regan’s and/or Henry’s – then the two landmark pubs in the village – was always a pleasure. O’Regan’s had the benefit of the cruisers mooring behind their premises; across the green in Henry’s, GAA talk was always high on the agenda (with a mix of politics perhaps).

Henry’s was one of those quaint, traditional Irish pubs, full of character – and characters. I have happy memories of calling in from time to time with my late father, when a chat with Jim Henry and locals was always a very enjoyable experience.

I was delighted to see St Michael’s end a 30-year wait for championship silverware last Saturday, with the Cootehallbased club romping to victory over Clann na nGael (see Seamus Duke’s report).

Indeed a text I received from Seamus from the Hyde (we were away for the weekend) drew attention to a phenomenal individual performance

by St Michael’s forward Fiachra Henry, who scored a remarkable 2-12 in his side’s Roscommon Junior Football Championship A final win.

Real Roy of the Rovers stuff.

Naturally I assumed that Fiachra might have a connection with the GAA fanatic Jim Henry, and sure enough, I am informed that the late Jim would be Fiachra’s grand-uncle.

Anyways, Cootehall is a beautiful village, and St Michael’s a proud club with a great passion for the GAA. It’s lovely to see this hard-earned success being achieved. New heroes down Cootehall way!

On to Sunday, and Hyde Park played host to a pretty epic Roscommon Intermediate Football Championship final between Éire Óg and Castlerea St Kevin’s.

There are two immediate points to be made. Firstly, congratulations to Castlerea on a dramatic victory – they scored the winning point in the fifth minute of injurytime. It’s great to see this proud, historic club – which has given Roscommon GAA so many wonderful players over the decades – back at senior level. Secondly, there will be much sympathy countywide for Éire Óg, not just because they were beaten finalists for the second year in a row, but also because they looked likely winners for periods on Sunday. It was hard luck on Pat Doorey and his players.

Having said that, full credit to Castlerea for staying in contention and then finishing so strongly. Hero of the hour was Adam McDermott, who scored that tremendous late winner.

Roscommon GAA and Club Rossie have just announced a hugely exciting event – An Evening with Jim Gavin – which will take place at the luxurious Hodson Bay Hotel in Athlone on Friday, November 24th this year.

The six-time All-Ireland winning manager will be special guest on the night and will talk culture, innovation and success.

“We are really looking forward to the event. Jim Gavin is one of the biggest names in GAA and one of the most successful managers of all time and it’s fantastic that he’s joining us,” said Brian Carroll, Chairperson, Roscommon GAA. MC on the night will be RTE Sport senior presenter and commentator Darragh Maloney.

Also on stage will be Roscommon senior football manager Davy Burke and a number of the players.

The event will also include a drinks reception, premium dining, comedy and a brilliant auction & raffle, plus a whole lot more.

“We’ve already received a great response to what promises to be a wonderful evening.

Numbers are limited so please get in touch if your company or organisation would like to purchase a table for this super event. Huge thanks to the Hodson Bay Hotel who are hosting the night and are event sponsors,” said Aidan Brady, Commercial Director, Club Rossie.

All proceeds are going to Roscommon GAA as they continue to develop their facilities.

Darts are flying again!

Roscommon Darts League continued last weekend with some great darts being played.

This year’s format is the best of 7 games, 2 games of doubles

and 5 games of singles. A new rule this year sees a bonus point awarded for any team winning a game of doubles using a player who does not play in the singles. It is hoped that this will encourage teams to use as much of their panel as possible on the night.

The results were as follows: Holly Tree 4 Sportsman’s 3 (4-3 on bonus points); Flanagan’s 1 Cosy Bar 6 (1-6 on bonus points); Spells 5 An Bothar Rua 2 (6-2 on bonus points); Dalton’s 1 McDermott’s 6 (1-7 on bonus points). Hollywood v The Village Inn was postponed and will be played at a later date.

The Roscommon Darts League continues this Friday night, with the following fixtures: McDermott’s v Hollywood, Sportsman’s v Dalton’s, Holly Tree v Flanagan’s, An Bothar Rua v Cosy Bar and The Village Inn v Spells.

‘€3 to hear Dermot’ – extract from latest John Scally book

Curraghboy native John Scally’s new book 100 Extraordinary GAA Occasions gives an illuminating new insight into Dermot Earley’s family dynamics. Scally writes:

In a dislocated age like ours, our often frail and brittle lives are glued together by an everdecreasing circle of constants.

Dermot Earley was born into a life punctuated by work, family and religion, a world which lingered like a whisper in his subconscious.

Although the winds of change have swept through the country in the most dramatic of ways since his childhood the one constant was his family – they still kept his feet firmly on the ground. They talked on for a while and just as he was finishing Dermot asked: ‘Will I see you on Tuesday night?’

‘At Castlerea for my talk.’

‘Do you think I would pay three euro to go and hear you?’

Oran are U-19 champions Oran were crowned Roscommon LGFA Division One U-19 champions when they defeated St Brigid’s by 2-18 to 4-2 in a superb game in Enfield on Sunday.

Oran started brilliantly with a flurry of scores, St Brigid’s responding with a goal. Megan Flynn reasserted Oran’s dominance with a superb goal before seven unanswered points moved them comfortably ahead at half-time, 1-11 to 1-1.

Oran continued to sparkle in the second half, with some great passing moves, Andrea Fallon netting their second goal. However, St Brigid’s did not make things easy, scoring 3-1 in the second half.

This was a great win for Oran, for whom every midfielder and forward scored. They were managed by Gerry Morris, Anne Connolly, Annette McDermott and Deirdre Regan.

Bruen praises character of players and influence of bench < SEAMUS DUKE

Dara Bruen, a Castlerea man through and through, stood in the rain and looked at the mayhem around him as Castlerea players and supporters celebrated on the Dr Hyde Park pitch after their dramatic win.

The winning manager never doubted his charges’ ability, but he admitted that it was such a tight squeeze in the end.

“I can’t tell you what kind of a game it was because when you are on the line you are looking at mistakes and what you can do to change the system and how it’s going.

“We were under pressure for a lot of the game but they (Éire Óg) never pulled five or six points clear.

We felt that if we were in the game with ten minutes to go we had a great chance. I said that to you

when you were down in Castlerea for the preview and that’s the way it worked out” he commented.

Bruen paid tribute to his squad and said that the players introduced from the bench had played a crucial role.

“I always felt that we had a strong bench and that’s the way it worked out today. We may not have got it (the kick from the bench) on the scoreboard but we got it in terms of energy. The margins are so tight in a game like this”.

The Castlerea manager paid tribute to Éire Óg for their part in such a competitive and exciting final.

“That’s a savage Éire Óg team and I know that they have had a tough year. I know some of them so well. It is a disappointing day for them but there has to be a winner and thankfully we edged it in the end”.

Reflecting on a fantastic year for

his club, he continued: “We have had a super year, to be honest. At the start of the year we couldn’t have dreamt that we would finish up here at the end of the year as the intermediate champions. We are back up to senior now. It’s fantastic for everyone involved in the club”.

Dara also paid tribute to Castlerea hero Adam McDermott who came good in injury-time to kick two spectacular points to win the game, having earlier missed a relatively simple free.

“He showed great character, but that’s Adam. He showed for the ball all day. He didn’t have his best game today but he never hid. But there were plenty of other heroes today. Sean Joyce was phenomenal in the half-back line. I thought he was the best player on the field.

But look, it’s a team game and we are so happy to have got over the line” he concluded.

Adam McDermott, the scorer of the winning point in the 5th minute of injury-time, reflected on that dramatic and decisive score when he spoke to the media after the game.

“I have done it so many times in training, coming around the loop at the back of the play. It was a perfect lay-off, and I looked up and there was no one in front of me and I said ‘Why not?’ I’m going to have a go for this”.

The Castlerea hero said it took him

a while to get going in the match. “I couldn’t get my shooting right in the first half. I needed that settling score from a tap-over free. The confidence kept building as the game went on although I don’t know how I missed that easy free near the end”.

Winning the Intermediate Championship means so much to the Castlerea players and everyone in the club, as Adam explained.

“This title means everything to us.

When we were growing up, Castlerea were a senior team. When we went

down, maybe the club took their eye off the ball with regard to underage, but there is a reason that Castlerea have seven senior titles to their name. We are a senior club and that’s where we belong” he concluded.

Castlerea crowned as audacious Adam ends Éire Óg dream Callington Ltd Roscommon IFC Final Castlerea St Kevin’s 1-13 Éire Óg 0-15 < SEAMUS DUKE

In the most dramatic circumstances imaginable, a superb long-range point five minutes into injury-time from the boot of Adam McDermott ensured that Castlerea St Kevin’s won the 2023 Roscommon Intermediate Football Championship in a thrilling final played at Dr Hyde Park on Sunday.

Incredibly, that score (from about 40 metres) put Castlerea in front on the scoreboard for the first time in the game. It was such a dramatic way to win a title. As for Éire Óg, they will spend the days and weeks ahead wondering how they actually managed to lose a game that they looked like winning for most of its duration.

But full credit to Dara Bruen’s team.

They never dropped their heads, and the arrival of subs like Nathan Bligh and Ronan Curran in the second half re-energised the team and drove them on to make that final push which got them over the line.

In wet and windy conditions, the big crowd were treated to a super game which featured some fantastic scores and excellent play on both sides. It was a pity that there had to be a loser. Éire Óg were the better side for most of the first half. Jamesie Greene and Enda Crawley were winning the midfield battle and with Conor Cox deadly accurate from play and frees, the early signs looked very good for Pat Doorey’s men.

By the end of the first quarter Éire Óg had built up a decent lead, with Cox (2), Liam Creaton, Brian Greene and Tom Greene on target. Castlerea refused to panic and the breakthrough they were looking for came in the 22nd minute when Shane Keenan drove a long ball into the danger area and Jonathan Hester rose highest to fist the ball past Colm Lavin.

That goal reduced the margin to just a point, but Éire Óg produced an excellent response. Two pointed frees from Cox saw them go in at half-time 0-10 to 1-4 ahead. Éire Óg took up where they left off on the resumption, and for most of the third quarter they kept Castlerea at arm’s length. Points from Conor Cox (2), Liam Creaton and Jamesie Greene helped them into a 0-14 to

1-7 lead by the 44th minute, with Adam McDermott (2) and Darren McDermott on target for Castlerea.

Slowly the tide started to turn as Castlerea got more of a grip on proceedings. Sean Joyce, Michael Conroy and Jonathan Hester were gaining more possession around the middle, and Adam McDermott came powering into the game. Two converted frees from McDermott narrowed the gap to two with 10 minutes to play.

McDermott was now on fire and Castlerea’s belief was growing. He pointed a free in the 50th minute and three minutes later the Castlerea followers were on their feet when sub Nathan Bligh levelled the scores with a super point from play.

Indeed Castlerea had a chance to go ahead in the 57th minute, but the normally ultra-dependable McDermott pulled a 25-metre free wide of the posts. It looked a very costly miss when Éire Óg went down the field and after Brian Greene was fouled Conor Cox pointed the resultant free to edge them ahead inside the final minute of normal time.

The board showed that there would be five minutes of injury-time so there was still time for either side to win it.

It was Castlerea, and McDermott particularly, who were not to be denied. The young attacker steered over a long-range free from 43 metres in the 62nd minute to level the scores again.

The tension was now almost unbearable as the final whistle loomed. Éire Óg missed a couple of half-chances, and then as the clock moved towards the five-minute mark Castlerea worked the ball upfield with purpose. Sean Joyce and Jonathan Hester exchanged passes before Adam McDermott took it on.

Then, from just inside the 45-metre line, McDermott wrote his name into the Castlerea St Kevin’s history books with a booming point. It was

a score fit to win any big game.

The final whistle sounded on the kick-out and Castlerea were back at the top table of Roscommon club football. Their followers, who could scarcely believe what they had just seen, celebrated in the rain as their players embraced each other following a truly astonishing win.

Spare a thought for Éire Óg, who will be devastated after this loss.

They looked the likely winners for most of the way but never kicked on when they were in a commanding position in the middle of the second half. Hopefully they can take solace from the experiences of the likes of St Dominic’s, Oran and Fuerty in recent years, all of whom had to endure painful defeats before finally getting their hands on the Jimmy Murray Cup.

For the new champions, David Finneran, Sean Joyce, Jonathan Hester, Shane Keenan, Darren McDermott, the mercurial Adam McDermott and sub Nathan Bligh were all excellent.

For Éire Óg, Enda Crawley could do no more on the day, while Joe Hester, Liam Creaton, Brian Greene and Conor Cox were always prominent.
