Working from Home and Tax Relief I have worked from home on a full-time basis since March of last year. A friend told me that I might qualify for some tax relief because I work from home. Is this correct?

Many people continue to work from home because of the COVID-19 situation. If you work from home for substantial periods of time on a fulltime or part-time basis then you may be able to claim tax relief against the cost of some home expenses such as electricity, heat and broadbands.

In order to qualify for tax relief, you must work from home for substantial periods of time on a full-time or part-time basis. You are not entitled to claim tax relief if you bring work home from the office outside of normal working hours, for example in the evenings or at weekends.

Your employer is not legally obliged to make a contribution to you in respect of additional electricity, heating or broadband costs incurred.

However, if they choose to do so you may receive up to €3.20 per day from your employer without having to paying any tax, PRSI or USC on it. If your employer pays more than €3.20 per day to cover these expenses, you pay tax, PRSI and USC as normal on the amount above €3.20.

If your employer does not pay you an allowance for your expenses, you may claim for tax relief at the end of the year from Revenue. Your tax refund will be based on the number of days you worked from home and your electricity, heating and broadband costs.

Revenue currently applies a tax relief rate for the cost of running a home office at 10% of the total cost. Therefore, you may apply 10% of the cost of your electricity, heating and broadband costs against your taxes. Keeping copies of utility bills will be important to substantiate your claim.

Ordinary people infuriated by latest announcement – Fitzmaurice

Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice has criticised the Government’s recent announcement that the reopening of indoor hospitality has been delayed once again.

Deputy Fitzmaurice said ordinary people around the country had been left infuriated by Taoiseach Micheál Martin and that he has fielded a number of calls from angry constituents who have left bemused and frustrated.

“The Taoiseach needs to be very careful with what he is saying, as he is infuriating people right around the country,” Deputy Fitzmaurice said.

“Quoting advice from

NPHET and saying that the safest way to proceed with a return to indoor hospitality ‘is to limit access to those who have been fully vaccinated, or have recovered from Covid infection’ – is he living in the real world at all? Suggestions such as this are neither workable, nor policeable.

If this became a reality, it would cause mayhem on the streets. How would someone running a restaurant or pub know if someone had recovered from Covid?

“As well as that, the majority of the young people in the country have yet to be even offered a vaccine as part of the roll-out pro-

gramme – so they would be blacklisted from enjoying indoor hospitality from the get-go.

“This advice is completely impracticable, and frankly, it is frightening to

Minister of State Josepha Madigan visits St.Teresa’s Special School, Ballinasloe Minister of State for Special Education and Inclusion Josepha Madigan visited St. Teresa’s Special Needs School in Ballinasloe on Friday last following the announcement of two new classrooms for the school recently.

School principal Anita O’Reilly, vice-principal Geraldine Clarke and local Fine Gael Senator Aisling Dolan were on hand to welcome the Minister of State.

Minister of State Madigan said it had been a great experience to meet children and teaching staff at the school.

“St. Teresa’s caters to such a wide catchment area across counties of Galway, Roscommon, Offaly, Westmeath. Senator Aisling Dolan has raised the needs of students in the Ballinasloe area both here in St. Teresa’s and in Scoil An Chroí Naofa in Ballinasloe.

“The funding of two new classrooms here is a big step forward and will be so welcome to parents and students for this September.

I am also conscious of the plans for new school grounds to allow a new special needs school for the area.

“Thank you to Principal Anita O’Reilly and her excellent team, teachers, SNAs and all who have given me a great tour of all the wonderful activities and care for children in the school here. I really loved seeing the garden and the wonderful artwork,” she said.

Senator Dolan said: “Principal Anita O’Reilly, vice-principal Geraldine Clarke and staff do so much in this great school, however there were was no place for ten children due to enrol this September. This situation caused real stress and anxiety for parents and teaching staff alike.

“We have multi-disciplinary teams of specialists who help and support the staff provide speech and language, OT services, physiotherapy and many other therapies. These are vital supports which help the children

reach their potential.

“We have been here since 2010 and we have grown from 11 students to 36 enrolled for next September. I want to thank the Minister for taking the time to visit our school and to meet some of our excellent staff. The funding for additional classrooms was essential and I want to thank the Minister and the Department of Education for supporting our school and children in the area.

“It was lovely to have the opportunity for one of our students Lorcan Donoghue to make a small presentation to the Minister – well done to Lorcan,” she said.

The chairperson of Ballinasloe Area Community Development, Seamus Duffy, welcomed the addition of two extra classrooms at the site and said the group supports the development of organisations in both business and education at its site in Creagh, Ballinasloe.

According to the council’s planning website, the local authority has requested further information from Natural Forces Renewable Energy Ltd., which now has six months to respond to the request.

115 submissions were received on the application which has met with strong local opposition.

Local arrests as Gardaí investigate human trafficking As part of an ongoing investigation into human trafficking, organised prostitution, and money laundering, Gardaí attached to the human trafficking investigation and coordination unit at the Garda National Protective Services Bureau (GNPSB), assisted by members from the western region, conducted a number of searches in Roscommon, Longford and Donegal on Monday morning last.

Two women aged in their 40s and 30s were arrested and detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007 on suspicion of Organised Crime Offences.

The GNPSB has appealed to anyone who has been the victim of human trafficking to contact the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666111 or any Garda station.

Local publicans ‘left in limbo’ following reopening delay < DAN DOONER

Publicans and restaurant owners in Roscommon say they have been left in limbo following the Government’s decision to postpone the reopening of indoor hospitality.

David Regan of Regan’s Gastro Pub and Restaurant in Roscommon town said the delay was extremely disappointing.

“We are gutted to be honest that we can’t reopen.

We have been closed since before Christmas because we don’t have any outdoor dining facilities to avail of. It’s been very difficult for our team, our customers and for ourselves, both financially and mentally,” he said.

David said Regan’s had abided by all public health guidelines when allowed to reopen last year and said that socialising was safer in a controlled environment.

“We monitored customers here before Christmas when the arrived and we kept track of phone num-

bers and ensured there was no interaction between different tables. It is a controlled environment and far safer than say house parties or similar social events.

“Unfortunately we are at a disadvantage without outdoor facilities and we are totally reliant on indoor dining. There are double standards at play though when people can pay money to stay at a hotel and eat and drink indoors. The risk factors are the same so it flies in the face of what we are doing here”.

David also said that only allowing vaccinated customers to socialise indoors would be unworkable and that young staff members would still be at risk.

“There would be a huge risk on the shoulders of staff. We couldn’t run this place without students and we have a large number of staff in their 20s and younger. It would be putting them at risk and wouldn’t be fair to expect them to work indoors

when not permitted to socialise in the same setting,” he said.

David was unconvinced that reopening would take place in July, saying the situation was still far from certain.

“July 19th was not a date for reopening, a vaccine passport will probably dictate the new date but where does that leave us?

“This virus hasn’t gone away and a new variant is out there. The last thing any of us want is another wave come September or October but we do need some clearer communication when it comes to reopening,” he said.

Chairperson of the Roscommon Town and District branch of the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland, Larry Brennan, said the delay was not unexpected but has left publicans and restaurant owners in limbo.

“The most disappointing thing about this from a publican’s point of view is that the Government haven’t given us a defi-

nite date for reopening,” he said.

“Obviously we want to comply with public health guidelines and not risk another peak in this virus but we have been left in limbo without a confirmed date for reopening.

“We would have been happier if they put it back to September when a large

percentage of the population will be vaccinated.

Anyone who is tuned in to this situation knows that we were unlikely to reopen on July 19th.

“July 5th was never going to go ahead but the last thing we wanted was to be left in limbo,” he concluded.

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK A column by Roscommon People editor Saturday Out for a walk in Rooskey, we’re pleased to see significant activity on the river, not to mention a large number of campervans at the facility overlooking the Shannon on the Roscommon side of the bridge.

On this beautiful afternoon, holiday-makers on the cruisers are in good form, as well they might be.

We reach what are probably acceptable levels of jealousy while watching the familiar routine at the locks: rope your boat up, swig a beer or wine, smile and interact with fellow tourists, wave at locals, enjoy the magically slow pace of life which cruising on the Shannon offers.

We enjoy the atmosphere for maybe 15 minutes. Once the lock keeper has their work done, the cruisers are free to…cruise on.

Four young lads on one boat are in a merry mood. They thank an elderly couple on an adjoining boat for all their help and advice, while waving a friendly goodbye to us.

As their cruiser begins to exit the lock into the glorious, inviting expanse of water, one of the lads is in the mood to address the audience. Almost certainly a river novice, he’s been doing some research. Holding a beer in one hand and the rope you tie the boat up with in the other, he cries out: “The Spanish will NOT take our fish!” His friends laugh, we smile.

Suitably encouraged, he adds: “And don’t even start me on the French!”

Sunday On a long walk today, I saw an outbreak of normality in a modest but pretty front garden. Two small children zigzagged from toy car to toy something else. In the brilliant sunshine, their grandparents toed and froed, watching every tiny step with care and pride, while trying to play down any impression that they were on Cloud 9. It was like summer days are meant to be. While it was

Monday It’s not easy to set aside four hours or so to watch two Euro 2020 games the same evening – particularly as we’re enjoying beautiful weather – so I’m scrambling between recording the football, checking scores on Twitter, pausing the TV, and just generally making a hames of it!

With 80 minutes gone and Spain 3-1 up on Croatia, I decide to abandon what will inevitably be a tippy-tappy finale. I leave the room, locate my laptop and begin to do some work for the Roscommon People.

That’s when Modric’s Law kicked in. Incredibly, Croatia, inspired by their veteran maestro Luka Modric, scored two late goals to take the game into extratime. Spain were stunned, but the favourites showed great resolve to strike twice in extra-time, winning a classic by 5-3. On Twitter, someone (not unreasonably) wrote: “Now France v Switzerland will be an awful match”.

Under pressure to get some work done, and probably hurting because I’d missed the day’s football drama as it unfolded live, I decided to record the less appealing France v Switzerland. Hopefully my recording wouldn’t clash with Eastenders or Sister Wives.

By 9.15 or so, I just had to check in. France had come from 1-0 down to ease 2-1 ahead. I used to dislike Paul Pogba because he can be such a lazy sod, but now I’ve come to love his audacious skills. Suddenly he scoops a long-range shot into the net, a wonder goal which has surely sealed it for a team that’s dripping in talent. 3-1. Pogba’s celebration is a reminder of a famous one by another French show-off, Eric Cantona, many years ago. Pogba stands, arms folded, accepting the acclaim of mere mortals. Then he dances (on the Swiss grave).

Party time. Game over.

Not quite. Just after I’ve left the room again (I need to work away from the TV) Switzerland channel their inner Croatia. I really do need to stick with the live soccer. Like Croatia, Switzerland also score two late goals, stunning France, taking the game to 3-3 and extra-time. By now I’m back viewing again. It’s high drama, glorious end to end football.

The dreaded penalties. I detest penalty shootouts. Heroic teams should not see their dreams die because of this cruel sporting version of russian roulette. The Swiss won the penalty lottery. They were great, but the French didn’t really deserve to go out. It must have been riveting TV for those who stuck with it.

Last Friday I met a restaurant owner (in an adjoining county) and sympathised with his 16-month plight (while appreciating that we have all suffered). “I can’t understand how dozens of people can pop into Lidl

and we can’t have people in here” he replied, with the resignation of a man by then well used to crushing disappointment.

It’s heartbreaking to see the hospitality industry being dealt another huge blow today. Not alone will indoor dining not return next Monday, our despairing restaurant owners and publicans haven’t even been given a ‘new date’. It’s probably many decades since there was such a lowkey build-up to a Connacht Championship opener for Roscommon footballers. Roscommon town centre is still undergoing surgery. Normally, flags would flutter here and there in Main Street, locals would stop and chat about our prospects. Currently we have limited access to the town centre; we can barely assess the flag count! And meeting people for a chat remains a casualty of Covid.

Of course the main reason for the lowkey build-up is the fact that expectations have been lowered due to a lacklustre league campaign. It wasn’t even stop-start; it was stop-stop. Four league losses in four outings has certainly dented the sense of anticipation that prevailed before GAA resumed.

Roscommon were very poor against Galway and Armagh, but I was quite impressed with our display against Dublin at the Hyde, and more than quite impressed with how we performed against Kerry in our second home game.

I believe in this squad of players and have no doubt they are much better than the performances against Galway and Armagh suggest. We have a strong squad, one that’s graced by a number of quality forwards. However, slow build-up play is not getting us anywhere, and I suspect supporters would like to see Roscommon pressing more in their opponents’ half, and moving the ball with more pace when in possession.

Playing ‘football as chess’ is all very fine, but maybe we need to combine ‘the modern way’ with some good old-fashioned ‘go at them’ spirit, marked by passion, pace and pressing. We have an 8-page preview today. Best of luck to Roscommon on Sunday.

Kerrane: Government failing to tackle skyrocketing childcare costs Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has warned that the Government is continuing to fail families through its ongoing failure to address skyrocketing childcare fees, despite being in power for a year.

Deputy Kerrane said: “Childcare costs are far too high, and are simply unaffordable for families on ordinary incomes. The Government needs to properly fund the sector, so that childcare fees will go down and families’ finances will get a much-needed break.

“This time last year in their Programme for Government, the coalition announced a series of promises to reform the childcare sector. However, we are now a year on and not only have childcare fees not fallen, but they have actually risen even further.

“This failure is letting down families here in County Roscommon, who are faced with monthly fees of around €648 per child. Families with more than one child in full-time childcare must meet an even more significant financial burden on a monthly basis. Families urgently

Sad passing of Tommy Finnegan, stalwart of Roscommon Herald Minor 1951 All-Ireland winning team

SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION

As we’ve walked with the Apostles in the Gospels in recent weeks, we’ve witnessed Jesus command the wind and sea, and order a little girl to arise from the dead.

But He seems to meet His match in His hometown of Nazareth. Today’s Gospel is blunt: “He was not able to perform any mighty deed there”. Why not? Because of the people’s lack of faith. They acknowledged the wisdom of His words, the power of His works. But they refused to recognize Him as a prophet come among them, a messenger sent

by God. All they could see was how much “this man” was like them - a carpenter, the son of their neighbour, Mary, with brothers and sisters. Of course, Mary was ever-virgin and had no other children. The Gospel refers to Jesus’ brothers as Paul refers to all DOYLE & SONS Israelites as hisSbrothers, the children of Abraham (see Romans 9:3, 7).

That’s the point in today’s Gospel, too. Like the prophet Ezekiel in today’s First Reading, Jesus was sent by God to the rebellious house of Israel, where He found His own brothers and sisters obstinate of heart and in revolt against God. The servant is2060848 not above the Master (see Matthew 10:24). As His disciples, we too face the mockery and contempt we hear of in today’s Psalm. As Paul confides in today’s Epistle, insults and hardships are God’s way of teaching us to rely solely on His 5 grace.

Jesus will work no mighty deeds in our lives unless we abandon ourselves to Him in faith. Blessed then are those who take no offense in Him (see Luke 7:23). Instead, we must look upon Him with the eyes of servants - knowing that the son of Mary is also the Lord enthroned in the heavens.

‘Light Ballet’ illuminates Lough Key Light Ballet, presented as part of Brightening Air transformed the skies and surrounding landscape of eight counties from June 13th to 20th as this light installation floated down the River Shannon.

The journey began each night from dusk starting off on Lough Key, Co. Roscommon on June 13th and travelled through Leitrim, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Tipperary, Clare, ending its journey in Portumna, Co. Galway.

Light Ballet was presented as part of Brightening Air/Coiscéim Coiligh, a nationwide, ten-day season of arts experiences brought to you by the Arts Council, for June 2021.

Matthew Cregan said: “Light Ballet, surpassed my expectations. The Zoom calls during the day with the school children we collaborated with as part of the Light Ballet Education Project really made it for me.

“Light Ballet gave the children access to an Art Form that perhaps they never knew existed, opening their eyes to look at light in a new way”.

Mick Murray described ‘Light Ballet’ as a “mammoth project” and said the River Shannon boating community had been very supportive and engaged.

“They also helped spread

the word and to explain how to connect with the soundscape to others, creating a great atmosphere about Light Ballet on the water and from as early on at Lough Key. It was really nice to see an audience so engaged.

“For Culture Works, the opportunity to present a project like Light Ballet as part of a nationwide programme was a really important moment as we were able to bring this installation to people in their own communities.

“Brightening Air allowed us to work with Mick and Matt to realise their vision on an ambitious scale,” he said.

Threen NS pupils create new school murals!

Students at Threen National School have been busy in recent months, working with local artist, Emily Cuddy, as part of the ‘Artist in School Programme’, to create new murals and paintings for the school.

Working safely within the Covid-19 guidelines, the children were involved in all stages of the process, from brainstorming ideas to the painting of murals.

The process started with a poster competition, where students submitted some brilliant ideas.

As with all creative experiences, learning of different types took place and the children gained numerous skills and had valuable discussions about what might work in our space.

The aim was to create a child-friendly space that was bright and cheerful.

The design of the outdoor mural was created so all students could be involved in the painting, and the vertical stripes created a fantastic multicoloured backdrop for the children’s games. In addition to enhancing the outdoor space in the playground, the corridor in the school was given a new lease of life with two indoor murals.

The different elements

that the children consider important to school life are represented in the images painted on the wall. Elements such as the school’s Catholic ethos, inclusivity, the community, learning, sport, music and drama are included in the murals. The school garden, which plays a huge part in our school, is also represented.

All the children have been able to include their handprints on one wall too. This idea was important to the children as it is a recognition of us working as school community and the importance that teamwork plays in all our lives.

The handprints also signify that each student is unique, and have different talents and skills, but together create a successful school community.

Participating in the programme has benefitted all children as well as the school community. Emily Cuddy ensured that the project ran smoothly throughout and staff are delighted with the enhanced school environment.

Covid deniers are spreading nonsense and possibly damaging society!

Is it just me, or is anyone else sick of listening to the rantings of anti-vaxxers and pandemic deniers? I’m not talking about those who are unsure about getting the vaccine, nor am I talking about those who are waiting on their turn to have their jab. In fact, I’m not even demonising those who don’t want a vaccine for the simple reason that I was one of them!

I was scared stiff of getting jabbed with a new-fangled, speedily-developed dose of something that could hopefully protect me against contracting Covid-19, but at the same time, could potentially leave me with some nasty side effects. Everyone has a right not to be vaccinated, and I’m perfectly okay with that, but I’m not okay with the staunch anti-vaxxers and the Covid deniers (or as I call them, the

people who aren’t on the same page as the rest of us) refusing to accept that the pandemic even exists.

I’m not okay with them refusing to wear a face covering in public, and I’m not okay with them refusing to keep their social distance from me. I’m also fed up with them taking their unsubstantiated arguments to social media, raising their indignation to a level so unnecessarily dramatic, you’d nearly believe that it’s their rights, and theirs alone, at the neglect of those of us who’ve been vaccinated and ‘brainwashed’, that should be placed firmly front and centre.

At the time of writing, over 270,000 people in this country have been diagnosed with Covid-19, with tragically, over 4,900 dying

from the virus. It was based on these statistics, my own intensive research, and the fact that we have vulnerable loved ones we wish to protect, that spurred himself and myself to grab the opportunity to get our jabs with both hands. Indeed, when our lovely doctor told us we were eligible for the vaccine, the relief we both felt was palpable. Even though we knew we couldn’t exactly party like it was 1999, we were both thrilled that we could hug our granddaughter and my vulnerable parents again.

Let me make it clear – I don’t for one second believe, nor would I ever support, the notion that vaccinations should be made mandatory.

However, given the statistics around the Delta variant, I have to question the emotional capabilities of those anti-vaxxers and deniers (the

These thoughtless thugs, who don’t know what it is to give something back to their community, clearly have the intelligence of the plants they destroyed – plants and arrangements which are, let’s face it, a feature of the charming Ballyleague landscape. How dare they!

Some are actually refusing point blank to trust the advice of the medical professionals; even that of their own personal doctors. I do understand if they don’t have any trust in the Government – after all, their response to this pandemic has been somewhat bungled to say the least.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the deniers have no business challenging scientific experts, they have, but if these people are getting their information and taking advice from questionable sources on social media…well, d’oh!

A device, or, as it’s being called, ‘a weight loss tool’ has been designed to stop people who wish to lose weight from opening their mouths wide enough to eat food. I kid you not!

Dubbed the DentalSlim Diet Control, the device, which has been developed by experts in both New Zealand and the UK, consists of a set of magnetic components and locking bolts, which can apparently be fitted by dentists.

Now while this intra-oral contraption might prove attractive to some – especially since an article published in the British Dental Journal reports that a group of women who used it ‘lost a mean amount of 6.36kg of their body weight’, I have to say it’d never suit me. You see, sadly I suffer from what doctors have called ‘a very serious condition’, which prevents me from ever going on a diet…it’s called hunger!

ney was over, and that our lives had finally gone back to normality.

My first port of call on Sunday morning was a beautiful coffee shop called Esquires in Roscommon. After plenty of threatening, my wife Carol and I finally joined my sister-in-law Bonnie for a cup of the delicious coffee she’d been telling us about.

Having ordered our different beverages (I’m a tea man), we sat out in the lovely sunshine and enjoyed the chat and craic with some of the people who were also enjoying a coffee in the sun.

At the next socially distanced table were a couple from Frenchpark, who were returning from get-

ting their second jabs in the Abbey Hotel. They told us that it had been very busy, but very well organised, and we chatted about everything from football to politics and the effect Covid has had on all our lives. We also had the craic with a lady called Liz, who told me not to mention her name in the paper – a promise that I have pretty much kept.

When all that was done, we left the lovely secluded outdoor area of Esquires (where Carol told me the coffee lived up to its reputation), and later in the afternoon headed off to Galway to meet up with our son Mark and his wife Aoife. Gal-

Cruel world of sport strikes again!

I mentioned last week how cruel sport can be, speaking about how testing positive for Covid had cost John Rahm an almost certain victory in a major golf tournament in America. This week in rugby, Alan Wyn Jones (captain of the Lions touring party who are heading to South Africa) is another example, as he sustained an injury in their warm-up game against Japan in Edinburgh on Saturday.

So, instead of having the massive honour of leading the Lions, he won’t even be on the plane.

Another Welsh player, Justin Tipuric, suffered a similar injury, and he too is staying at home.

Of course, one man’s misfortune is another man’s gain, and two lads who were probably thinking they would never be Lions will be leaving for South Africa in their places. For Ireland’s Conor Murray, it has resulted in an honour he never would’ve imagined coming his way, as he has been elevated to captain of the Lions – an even

bigger surprise for a player that to my knowledge, has never even captained his country.

Anyway, along with this, and with the Olympics, and the Euros coming nicely to the boil, we can look forward to a summer of top-class international sport. And at home, the GAA championships will really take off next Sunday – at least in Creggs, where most of us can have one leg on either side of the border when Galway take on the Rossies in Dr. Hyde Park.

Despite the fact that only a few supporters will be allowed in, the rivalry will be as intense as ever, and with no back door, it will be the end of the line for one of the teams. As to who will win, I have no idea, with both teams coming in under a bit of a cloud.

As a Galway man I have to hope for a win for the Tribesmen, but if the Rossies do beat us once again, I will be gracious in defeat…and hide in my bedroom for a week at least!

After a bite to eat, it was time to say our goodbyes and head back to Creggs, where we rounded off the day with a couple of drinks in the very fresh air at Mikeen’s.

After such a day, you would be forgiven for thinking that the worst is over. Maybe because we both have had the second jab, it is for us, but back in Creggs, we heard about several young people who have recently contracted the virus.

While they may not be as badly affected as the elderly, nonetheless some of them are quite unwell, and

the sad news is that this thing has not gone away.

We now know that indoor dining and drinking is not going to happen as planned, and so once again, the publicans will be left facing an uncertain future. Those that have been unable to open so far must be despairing of ever getting back to business.

It is more apparent now than ever that until everyone has been vaccinated, life will continue to have difficulties for many strands of society. Thankfully, the vaccination programme seems to be going along very well. The quicker our youth get sorted, the better for everyone.

First bog visit in over fifty years…

One of the things I’ve managed to avoid for more than fifty years is going to the bog. This year however I have gone back to my youth and cut turf for the first time in more than half a century.

In fact, it could well be the first time ever that I’ve ever cut turf at all, because the last time I remember working in the bog was as a 13 or 14-year-old, when myself and my three older brothers used to do piece work footing turf for the ESB down in the bogs around Lanesboro.

Piece work meant we only got paid for whatever amount of turf we footed, and sadly, the summer we were there was one of the hottest and driest in years, which meant that I spent more time lying in the sun than working. If memory serves me right, I got dropped off the turf footing team for a complete lack of interest and effort.

To this day, I can remember a fellow we knew as Big Jim, who looked to me to be about ten feet tall, and as big as half a house. If ever a man dispelled the popular myth that a long back is a hindrance to footing turf, Big Jim did; he got more done than the four of us (until I got dropped) put together, and I always wondered how much he was earning every week.

Our first cheque came to 2 pounds 14 and a penny, and my brothers reckoned my contribution was the penny. After careful consideration, it was decided that I would be better off lying in the sun at home, and less expensive to run. So until last week, that was my last visit to the bog.

I have to say that this time I enjoyed it. I have actually got the turf turned – although I am leaving it to my sons to do the footing, as bending down at this stage in my life is not advisable and it’s possible I might never again straighten out.

People always talk about the peace, quiet and relaxation qualities of the bog, and I have to say that on a nice day, with the birds singing and the sun shining, it’s hard to beat.

It’s great to be back after fifty years or more, and I look forward to enjoying the fruits of the boys’ work later on in the year when the snow is on the ground, turf is blazing in the open fire, and us as warm as wool – can’t wait.

Finally for this week …

Out here in Crosswell we are celebrating the fact that our daughter Tara has qualified for the National Show Jumping Championships, which take place in the RDS in August, after finishing second out of 98 entries in a qualifier last weekend.

To qualify for the RDS is almost like qualifying for the Olympics, and for us, it is even more special as Tara is following in the footsteps of her mother, the then Carol Kelly, who also qualified for the national finals some years back. For Tara it has been a long road to get there, so we are all very proud of her, and wish her well in the finals in August!

Our good friend and occasional contributor TOM CURLEY has been in touch from ‘enemy territory’! Resident in Galway, but a devoted Roscommon supporter, Tom is very much looking forward to Sunday’s big game between the counties.

Tom, who recently compiled a journal on legendary Gaelic footballers – ‘Our Field of Dreams’ – sent us a photograph of his grandson, Samuel Ward (8), chatting football with Darren O’Neill (12) from Galway, who is a grandson of Mayo legend Johnny Carey.

A great man with the pen, Tom couldn’t resist musing on what might lie ahead: “The welcome return of inter-county football and hurling has raised much interest and debate, particularly now with the reintroduction of the old knockout system. No second hands of cards! Main talking points include Dublin’s strive for the coveted seven-in-a-row…while Kerry, following last year’s failure to Cork, with new talent on board will aim strongly at restoring old Kingdom glo-

ICMSA: Rise in construction costs wiping out farmers’ TAMS grants ICMSA Chairperson for Farm and Rural Affairs, Denis Drennan, has said that reference costs used to determine farmers’ TAMS grants must be updated immediately to reflect the substantial increase in construction costs.

Mr. Drennan said the rise in costs was

‘wiping out’ farmers’ grants: “Obviously, we’ve been speaking to farmers across the country and, across every county, construction costs have increased by unprecedented levels in the last year. The result is that a farmer expecting a 40% grant will end up get-

ting a substantially reduced rate as a result of increased costs and the failure of the Department to update reference costs.

“Minister Charlie McConalogue is going to have to revised the reference costs immediately and, in the interests

of fairness, we think that revised costs should apply to all investments under TAMS completed in 2021,” Mr. Drennan said.

The ICMSA Chairperson said that the construction increases are of double digit size and were putting unex-

pected and insurmountable financial strains on farmers trying to complete investments.

“If we’re going to grant-aid the construction then the grants must be based on a current and realistic costs,” he concluded.

MEP Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan has criticised the new proposals for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), as recently launched by the European Commission, saying that from an environmental point of view, it is a “denial of reality”.

“Looking at what’s been agreed upon from a wider EU context, it’s very clear that for those countries who have already completed full convergence, this CAP has little to offer from the point of view of progress when it comes to financial fair play.

From an environmental point of view, it is nothing short of a denial of reality”, he said.

“In Ireland’s case however, it is undeniable that significant further advancements have been made in this CAP reform when it comes to financial equality for over 72,000 farmers. Gains in convergence and the establishment of a mandatory redistributive payment, leave the Government with little choice but to implement a fairer CAP. The regulation also allows Minister McConalogue the freedom and flexibility that he spoke about to go even further with redistributive policies.

“On the environment, it gives the country an opportunity to fudge the challenge or alternatively, to step up and face reality. On land eligibility, it gives farmers in higher nature value areas the certainty to

look at future challenges without the fear of being taken out of the system and sacrificed in favour of those in the more intensive sectors,” he added.

MEP Flanagan said factory farming has been prioritised over family farming.

“One of the big-ticket items up for discussion at the negotiations was capping.

Well let’s cut to the chase. Capping is now living in the same residence as the dodo.

The proposal agreed upon at the Trialogue negotiations is meaningless when it comes taking money from those that are receiving obscenely large sums. The possibility of taking labour costs into account flies in the face of social justice and facilitates factory farming over the family-farming model.

“I heard the line over and over again from Minister McConalogue that he didn’t want to have his hands tied and that Ireland should decide what’s best for its own farmers. This agreed regulation offers him that opportunity. He has the freedom and flexibility to go for full convergence. He has the freedom to complete it sooner than the latest possible date of 2026. He has the freedom to take front loading further than 10% without any strings attached. Now let him do it. I’ll be watching him every step of the way. He needs watching,” concluded MEP Flanagan.

Ifac advice on TAMS II closing date Ifac, the farming, food, and agribusiness specialist professional services firm, is reminding Roscommon farmers that the closing date for the next tranche of the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS II) is fast approaching.

Philip O’Connor (Head of Farm Support) said: “The closing date for the next tranche of the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS II) is the 23rd of July. It is very important to note that the final TAMS II tranche will be on December 31st.

Farmers who won’t have an application ready for the 23rd of July only have five months before this last tranche closes.

“The grants available under TAMS II are 40% of €80,000 and this increases to 60% if an applicant is a

young trained farmer. Registered farm partnerships also allow for a ‘double’ ceiling of a grant claimable on a total spend of up to €160,000.

“The Low Emissions Slurry Equipment grant is another grant that is often forgotten about. The grants available here on certain slurry spreading equipment are 40% of €40,000 and this increases to 60% if an applicant is a young trained farmer. Registered farm partnerships are allowed an additional ceiling with a total spend of up to €60,000.

“The next tranche will open on the 24th of July, and like previous years, it would be expected to have two/three further tranches before the final deadline of December 31st. While a farmer won’t miss out on being able to apply for

TAMS II, if they apply in the wrong tranche it could delay their investments/ timescale for their investment proposal.

“Don’t rush the decision on investment for the sake of meeting a deadline, this could be far more costly than delaying your application and making the right investment for your farm.

When looking at capital investment, consider whether you should you make the investment, and if the capital expenditure gives a return on investment?

Consider cash flow pressures - have you adequately financially planned the investment, and if borrowing, have you the required borrowing capacity? Additionally, when it comes to tax-planning issues, consider Value Added Tax (VAT), Income Tax and Capital Repayment Trap”.

Castlerea MART WATCH There were 500 cattle presented for sale this week with no sign of trade or prices decreasing. In fact, prices were improved upon from last week, and the bullock ring recorded some very fancy prices for the time of year.

The top price was €1,270 over the weight for a 580kgs Chx store that made €1,850, while the lighter store bullocks attracted huge farmer interest this week with increased grass growth.

The heifer ring had a similar tone, with an excellent trade reported for both the stores and forward lots. The dry cow trade saw lots making up to €2.390, while cows with calves at foot made up to €2,080. Springer cows made from €890 to €1,310, and the weanling rings are noticing very strong demand at the moment, with bulls making up to €3.32 a kilo and heifers reaching €3 a kilo. There were lower numbers of calves on offer this week, but the smaller entry recorded a full clearance.

Proof needed that system for forest licences is working – IFA IFA Farm Forestry Chairman, Vincent Nally, has said that improvements to the forest licencing system are welcome but stressed the need for new targets and increased output so that the backlog can be cleared.

Mr. Nally welcomed improvements to the appropriate assessment procedures and the removal of the requirement to submit Natura Impact Statements by called

for more clarity for farmers.

“We need to see new targets and increased output of licences associated with these improvements,” he said.

“Farmers have heard similar promises from the Department in the recent past, but the increased output never materialised.”

A notification was issued to the industry recently detailing changes to private tree felling

licence (TFL) applications following an internal review of the system and appropriate assessment procedures.

Mr. Nally said that he very much hoped the changes would improve efficiency and get licences out quicker in the short term, until the recommendations from Project Woodland were forthcoming.

“These changes are very much

tinkering around the edges of a system that does not work for farmers. We are waiting on Project Woodland, which will hopefully lead to a complete overhaul of the forest licencing system, to deliver a new and improved system that will support farmers to plant more trees on farms,” he said.

“Each of these licences represents a forest owner who

wants to manage their forest.

Every additional week limits their management options and potentially reduces the value of their timber crop”.

The Farm Forestry Chairman stressed that a Natura Impact Statement may still be requested by the Department and under these circumstances it was vital that an environmental planning grant was introduced to support

farmers with the cost.

There are approximately 6,000 forest licences in the system, of which 1,860 which are privately held, and are for afforestation.

The Department’s target is to issue 4,500 new licences in 2021, or 375 licences per month. To date, approximately 1,500 have issued, with nearly 300 licences issued in May.

Tarmon NS is ‘Incredible Edibles’ champion!

Tarmon National School, Castlerea was recently crowned ‘Incredible Edibles’ Champion for 2020/2021.

Students at the school produced a bumper crop of vegetables from their poly tunnel, successfully hatched chickens, and reused old tyres to create flowerbeds.

The Roscommon school beat off competition from nearly 1,600 other entries to win the Agri Aware competition.

Minister of State for Public Health, Wellbeing and the National Drugs Strategy Frank Feighan was on hand to present the prizes to the winning school.

The submission from first

and second class taught by Michelle Flannery helped secure the title, however the entire school of 200 pupils came together to create a brilliant submission.

This year’s programme focussed on wellness while the biodiversity of the packs given to schools was enhanced by the addition of wildflower seeds for the first time.

Presenting the prizes to the winners, Minister of State Frank Feighan said: “I’m delighted to be here in my local area today to meet the winners of the 2021 Incredible Edibles and congratulate them all on their hard work.

ICMSA: CAP will ensure farmers ‘carry the climate change can’ President of ICMSA, Pat McCormack, has said the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) agreement will leave farmers “carrying the climate change can” both EU consumers and corporations.

Mr. McCormack said it would be “putting it mildly” to described the agreement as “a disaster for Irish farmers and the rural economy”.

“We’re going to discover whether Ireland had the sense to insist on maximum autonomy in terms of overall CAP application. And then we’re going to discover whether Minister McConalogue and his Government are really committed to preserving our

family farming sector,” he said.

“As we’ve said before, it’s not the motive of this model of convergence that we object to; it’s the outcome of this model of convergence, where the weight of payment has switched from farming to landowning.

“That’s fundamentally unfair and it’s deeply unpopular with the active farmers who are the engine of the sector and the sector’s exports. That group wants Ireland to secure and use the necessary autonomy to mitigate the worst aspects of the convergence commitment likely in the final agreement”.

On the Eco-schemes that the new

CAP will contain, Mr. McCormack said that all Irish farmers are facing a cut of around 25% in their BPS/ Greening payment to fund the Ecoschemes, with potentially another 10-15% to fund Frontloading/National Reserves etc. He said this was the blunt and uncomfortable reality that some people want to ignore and predicted that it will be a disaster for family farms throughout Ireland.

The ICMSA President said that there was no point in pretending that this CAP was anything other than a serious reverse for Ireland.

“This CAP should have been the occasion for the EU to face up to the systemic problems in the Union’s food supply chain and its impact on the environment.

“Instead of doing that, and actually starting to dismantle the absolutely ruinous ‘cheap food’ policy, the EU has decided to load all responsibility onto its farmers who – it’s now very clear - will be expected to carry the can for both consumers and corporations. It’s a failure of policy and a failure of political intelligence,” Mr. McCormack concluded.

Heifers ranged from an average of €2.46 per kilo up to €2.92 per kilo, and dry cows fetched from an average of €2.13 up to €2.58 per kilo. Buyers were active both online and at the ringside, resulting in a high percentage clearance of lots This Friday (July 2nd), we will have a special sale of bullocks and general sale of heifers, weanlings, dry cows, and suckler cows.

There was a smaller entry of sheep on offer at our sale on Wednesday (30th) with a slight dip in trade for spring lambs.

Spring lambs made up to €135 for 53.1kgs, and stag ewes made up to €160.

Our next sheep sale for lambs and cast ewes takes place on Wednesday, July 7th, at 11 am.

The yard opens at 8 am and all stock must be penned by 10 am.

‘Experience economy’ disappointed with decision to postpone indoor activities – Ibec

Such transparency would help dissipate some of the confusion that is rife amongst employers and employees as, internationally, countries have managed to keep their businesses in this sector open while at the same time managing the spread of the disease in communities”.

Community Finance Ireland has announced a €10 million AllIsland Recovery Loan fund, its first all-island loan scheme. The fund will offer flexible loans of €10,000-€500,000 to community sector organisations including faith-based groups, sports clubs and social enterprises in Roscommon.

Between 2016 and 2020, Community Finance Ireland financed loans to the value of €2.4 million for organisations in Connacht, including Strokestown Playschool and Strokestown Community Development Association in Roscommon.

Commenting on the launch, Anne Graham (Client Executive Manager at Community Fi-

nance Ireland) said: “Throughout the pandemic we witnessed the incredible resilience of the community sector, with many pivoting their offerings and exploring new opportunities for development. The All-Island Recovery Loan fund is open to organisations that want to build on these new opportunities to recover, rebuild or reimagine what they can bring to their local community.

“Despite the challenges of Covid-19 and public health restrictions, our client portfolios performed well over the past year and at Community Finance Ireland, we have nothing but confidence in the sector and its ability to play a pivotal role in

In his third year in charge, Roscommon manager Anthony Cunningham has been around long enough to know that the pressure is really on now. Roscommon’s league performances have veered from reasonable against Dublin and Kerry, to poor against Galway and Armagh, and he knows that a knockout game against Galway in the championship can make or break the season for his charges.

A win against his native county on Sunday will make up for a lot of the disappointment after relegation to Division Two was confirmed following that nine-point beating by Armagh. A loss would mean it will be February 2022 before the team takes to the field again.

Cunningham told People Sport that the mood in the camp is upbeat despite the poor league campaign.

“We were all disappointed after the Armagh game, and the players knew that they didn’t play well

enough after a good start. They are determined to get it right on Sunday. They are very motivated to do well and to put that performance behind them. The time for licking our wounds and preparing for this big championship game has been very short but there is a good buzz in the squad and the lads have been training hard,” he said.

Anthony says that Roscommon’s tendency this year to play well only in patches in big games is something they will have to eradicate: “We will have to concentrate for the whole 75 or 80 minutes on Sunday. We were excellent in the first quarter against Armagh, but faded after that, and we have to ensure that doesn’t happen again.

That certainly won’t be good enough on Sunday”.

The Roscommon manager says that the team’s poor display against Mayo in last year’s championship is something that they are especially determined to put right on Sunday.

“In the championship, every ball is treated like the last ball in the

game. Playing in spurts will not be good enough on Sunday. We were very disappointed that we didn’t perform in the championship last year against Mayo and we want to right that wrong,” he said.

Anthony knows what to expect from Galway on Sunday because Galway themselves will be under pressure to perform.

“This will be a very intense match. We will be concentrating on our own game, and Galway can look after their own camp, but we expect a fierce battle. There is never much between the two teams, and that will be the case on Sunday as well. Galway are a good side. They lost to Monaghan in the league relegation play-off there recently, but that’s a game they should have won. They have plenty of very good players and we are well aware of that,” he added.

In terms of injuries, Roscommon have a fairly clean bill of health.

“Ronan Daly is recovering from his injury and we hope he can play some part. Ultan Harney is back

and playing well and that’s a bonus too so we are not too bad in terms of injuries. We won’t be picking our starting fifteen until the end of the week,” Cunningham said.

Playing at Dr. Hyde Park is an advantage says Anthony, despite the fact that there will be a very small crowd there (1,050): “We are glad to have the game at home.

I always said that we want to use Dr. Hyde Park as a fortress and do not want to lose matches there, and this is a game we want to win at all costs. The early start doesn’t make any difference at all. It just pushes our match day preparations forward a few hours.

“There has never been much between these two teams. Galway will be coming here to win and we will have to match their intensity and play flat out for the whole game. Starting well and fading out after that will simply not be good enough and we know we will have give it everything for the entire game if we want to win it. We are certainly good enough to win it”, he concluded.

Journalists love clichés when it comes to big games. Teams are often ‘at a crossroads’, or ‘the last chance saloon’, or maybe even, ‘it will come down to the team that wants it more’. You can take your pick, but in plain English, this match on Sunday in Dr. Hyde Park has a lot more riding on it than qualification for the Connacht final - for both teams!

Of course, our primary interest here is with Roscommon. This group of players has given us great entertainment over the past five or six years, with two Connacht titles and three

National League Division Two titles. We have some excellent players but have probably over achieved in terms of our place in the pecking order.

But now Roscommon are under pressure. This year’s league threw up matches against Dublin and Kerry that no one expected could be won, however the form of the team in the games that were winnable was very worrying. Anthony Cunningham’s men never got in a blow against Galway in Pearse Stadium, and after a good start, there was a calamitous collapse in the relegation play-off against Armagh. Sunday will require Roscommon to come

up with their best display of the year if they want to entertain thoughts of a win.

There have been problems with the kick outs, and also at midfield, but Roscommon’s style of play seems to have become more negative in 2021. In several matches – notably against Galway and Armagh – Roscommon enjoyed plenty of possession, but too often the ball went laterally or even backwards when a more direct approach was needed. Roscommon have some excellent forwards but that’s not much good if they are not getting the ball. At times this year, they have been starved of possession.

‘Joyce under pressure but Galway can prevail’ Ollie Turner has been the voice of Galway football for over twenty-five years. On Sunday, he will take his place in the commentary box at Dr. Hyde Park to cover yet another Roscommon v Galway championship match for Galway Bay FM. While he agrees that Galway and Padraic Joyce will be under major pressure on Sunday, he says that this is a match that Galway should win.

“Since losing to Monaghan, Padraic Joyce has done no interviews at all, which would indicate to me that he is a man under pressure. But while he has not had a good run over the team, there is no one calling for his head here in Galway or anything like that but this is a really big game for him and for the Galway players.

“The facts of the matter are that Galway have won just one game since last March, and that was against Roscommon in the

league there recently, so it has been a miserable time.

I know that they are very determined to win this game on Sunday, and also to set the record straight against Mayo in the Connacht final.

“A lot of Galway players have left the panel in the past twelve months, which is worrying. Lads like Ronan Steede, Ian Burke, Michael Daly, and Adrian Varley have all gone for one reason or another and that has added to Joyce’s problems. In fact, the turnover of players over the past twelve months has been concerning. On the plus side, Damien Comer is back for Sunday’s game and there are a lot of the All-Ireland U-20 winning team who are progressing well.

“What Galway do not want on Sunday is to be drawn into a dogfight, which would suit Roscommon. I was disappointed with some of the decision making from some of the

Regulations beginning to test supporters’ patience < SEAMUS DUKE

There was plenty of excitement and anticipation when it was announced that the Connacht SFC semi-final between Roscommon and Galway would be one of the Government ‘test events’ as they attempt re-open society.

Under the 15-20 per cent guidelines, it was thought that between

2,500 and 3,500 people would be allowed to attend the game. However, that figure has been fixed at 1,049, a percentage of the seating capacity at Dr. Hyde Park. So now we will have vast terraces on Sunday with no one there at all.

The decision simply makes no sense. They could have easily accommodated at least 3,000 people on Sunday in total safety and prop-

erly stewarded with people on the terraces socially distant and in full compliance with the regulations. If you go Grafton Street this Saturday or to Galway City you will see thousands of people going about their business – and not socially distanced either.

The decision on the attendance means that each county will get about 350 tickets, with the rest

going to the players and their families. Talking to County Board officials this week, they are in a complete no win situation. Who do they give the tickets to, and who do they exclude? Everyone I spoke too has said it would be far easier if no one was allowed, because there will be a row regardless of how they manage the distribution of tickets. A test event? Not this one.

Fundraiser launched to save Strokestown playground Roscommon senior footballers Cathal Cregg, David Neary, and Sean Mullooly are joining forces with the Strokestown playground committee to save a local amenity that has been at the heart of the community for several years.

On Monday last, a summer mega online raffle was launched for the cause on the Irish led platform Idonate. Prizes include a much sought-after Sony Playstation 5 (digital) with two controllers, a Kuhn Rukon Tabletop Gas BBQ and Grill sponsored by Strokestown Hardware, a picnic bench sponsored by Derry Canon Wood products, three €100 fuel vouchers sponsored by Westward Scania and J. Harrington Solicitors, a one-night bed and breakfast stay at Kilronan Castle sponsored by Hanly Quarries and many other wonderful prizes.

Entries to this mega raffle can also be purchased in person at locations in Strokestown (please see Facebook page for more details). The raffle will take place live on social media on the 2nd of August.

While attending a social distanced mini launch of the fundraising drive, Cathal Cregg, well known Roscommon footballer and father of two, who lives in the locality, said: “The playground is a conveniently-located community space where we were able to escape to during Covid-19 to meet family in a safe, outdoor environment. It provided a welcome distraction. You cannot underestimate the value of outdoor play in a community playground”.

Roscommon footballers David Neary and Seán Mullooly added: “The community playground is a very worthy cause that benefits so many in the area and it is vital that everyone supports these fundraising efforts. It helps kids with both physically and socially development”.

Playground Community Committee member Michelle Dockery explained: “Over the last six years, there has been good support of the playground from various local sponsors, other sport and voluntary organisations, Sliabh Bán Community Benefit Fund, and CLÁR. “However, the playground incurs annual costs such as insurance and maintenance. Its upkeep requires fundraising, which, due to Covid-19 restrictions, has proved to be very challenging. Therefore the playground remaining open is now in jeopardy. In order to meet the ongoing costs and ensure the community playground remains open and safe for use, we appealing to the local community to support our summer fundraising drive and be in with a chance to win some super prizes”.

Also in attendance at the launch was recently elected Cathaoirleach of Roscommon Council Joe Murphy, who commended the local voluntary committee on the many years of work carried out to develop such safe play environment for children of Strokestown and surrounding areas.

He said: “While the playground provided endless hours of entertainment for the children of Strokestown and surrounding areas, we are now calling on the parents and the community to dig deep to save our playground”.

‘Hike to Hope’ in aid of Vita House Dan Magan and Micheál Duggan are hiking from Malin Head to Mizen Head in support of Vita House in Roscommon. The two men started their ‘Hike to Hope’ on Saturday last and are expected to cover over 545kms in sixteen days. Their route will see them travel from one end of the country to the other via Muff, Enniskillen, Cloone, Killashee, Nenagh, Charleville and Bantry.

All funds raised will go to Vita House, the Roscommon based counselling service that has been such a major support to the Magan family in recent years.

A Gofundme page (Hike to Hope Malin to Mizen 2021) has been set up and over €10,000 has been raised so far.

The family of the late Bernadette (Bernie) Compton of Clooncagh, Strokestown, Co. Roscommon and formerly of Derrylea, Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo, who died on May 29th, 2021, would like to thank most sincerely all those who sympathised with them on the loss of their dearly loved mother and wife.

We are eternally grateful to our many friends, neighbours and family who attended, sent cards and left condolences online.

2021 Club Championship set for August throw in < SEAMUS DUKE

The draws for the 2021 Roscommon Football Championship took place on Sunday last, and defending senior champions St. Brigid’s are in Group C with Tulsk, St Croan’s, and last year’s Intermediate champions, Oran. The other groups in the senior championship are Group A, made up of Pádraig Pearses, Western Gaels, Strokestown, and Clann na nGael, and Group B, made up of Boyle, Michael Glavey’s, Elphin,

and Roscommon Gaels.

In the Intermediate championship, the groups are Group A, made up of Fuerty, Castlerea St. Kevin’s, Creggs, and Shannon Gaels, and Group B, made up of St. Aidan’s, Clann na nGael, Ballinameen, and Kilbride.

Group C features St. Dominic’s, St. Faithleach’s, Kilmore, and Éire Óg.

The Junior A championship will be Group A, made up of St. Brigid’s, Boyle, St. Ronan’s, and St. Michael’s, Group B, made up of St.

Barry’s, Roscommon Gaels, Western Gaels, and Kilglass Gaels, and Group C, featuring Pádraig Pearses, Elphin, St. Joseph’s, and St. Dominic’s.

The format will be the same as 2020, with the top two teams in each group going into the quarter-finals, and the three third-placed teams playing for the remaining two places in the last eight. The bottom teams in each group will battle to avoid relegation.

The action starts on the weekend of August 14th and 15th.

The Roscommon U-20s footballers begin their 2021 Connacht Championship campaign next Tuesday night at Dr. Hyde Park when they face Leitrim at 7.30 pm.

It’s a match that Roscommon will be expected to win, but manager Liam Tully told People Sport that there are a number of players injured and he is taking nothing for granted.

“We have been training away and there is a good atmosphere in the camp, but we have a good few injuries. Shane Cunnane, Jonathan Hester, Joey O’Malley, Aaron McDermott, Shane Keenan, Sean Trun-

dle and Charlie Carthy are all carrying injuries at the moment. We’ve played a few challenges and looked at a lot of players, and it will be a hard job to pick the starting fifteen, even given the injuries we have.

“Leitrim will be formidable opposition. They are very strong up the middle of their team and will be hard to beat. We are certainly expecting nothing soft from them. They are always capable of putting it up to Roscommon so we will need a good performance on the night if we want to win it and hopefully we will get that,” he concluded.

At home in Dr. Hyde Park, Roscommon should have the firepower to beat Leitrim and qualify for the Connacht semi-final against Sligo a week later. Galway meet Mayo in the other semi-final.

Feeley quick off the mark in 2021!

Having finished the 2020 season at the top of the Cycling Ireland Rankings, Roscommon cyclist Daire Feeley has started the 2021 season with intent.

There was a later than usual start to the season with racing only given the green light just a month ago due to Covid-19 restrictions. Despite the long lay-off Daire has emerged in superb condition.

With just six races completed, he has already taken three victories with some outstanding performances, particularly in the Noel Teggart Memorial promoted

by Banbridge Cycling Club.

The 24-year-old, riding for All HumanVeloRevolution was best in the final sprint to the

line after a quality field cancelled each other out in the attacks that characterised the race. Daire came up against some very fast finishers on the line but he managed to see off Olympic hopefuls Mark Downey (Cruese Oxygene) and Fintan Ryan (EvoPro Racing) to win.

With his first win under his belt, Feeley went on to take victories in the John Holian Memorial and the Athenry GP. It was a great start to the season with Daire having to work hard for every victory, especially with the increase in fitness levels of the A1 category. The young Rossie will surely progress further as the racing calendar gets back to normality.

Irish racing today on two fronts, with the first of Bellewstown’s three-day festival at 4.25 pm for a flat card. There is a national hunt card on at Tipperary at 4.45 pm.

Tomorrow sees the second day of Bellewstown with another card on the level at 4.20 pm and the festival ends with national hunt racing on Saturday, first away at 4.35 pm.

On Friday evening, the action over the jumps is in Wexford at 5.15 pm and the flat meeting on Saturday is in Naas from 1.20 pm. There are two more meetings on Sunday with racing on the level at Greenmount Park in Limerick from 1.05 pm and national hunt racing in Tramore at 1.55 pm.

Tuesday sees another meeting at Lenebane here in Roscommon with an evening jumping card away at 4.25 pm.

There is television coverage from Sandown and Haydock on ITV on Saturday and carried on Virgin Media 1.

Curragh Review

On the opening day last Friday, Jim Bolger’s Beyond Happy gave young Luke McAteer a win in the Apprentice Derby. It was Bolger’s fifth win in twelve with the 4/1 second favourite making all to win by 1¼l and 3¼l from Allora Yeats and Tudor City.

Ross O’Sullivan won the TRI Equestrian Handicap with Longbourn ridden by Joey Sheridan Solene Lilyette and Miss Myers filled the minor places.

On Saturday, the supplemented Hurricane Lane brought the cash across the small pond for trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick winning by a neck from compatriot Lone Eagle trained by Martyn Meade and ridden by Frankie Dettori with the best of the home side Aidan O’Brien’s Wordsworth ridden by Seamie Heffernan with the favourite High Definition a very disappointing 10th of the 11 runners.

The Group 2 Railway Stakes also went for export with Go Bears Go trained by David Loughnane and ridden by Rossa Ryan, both Galwegians, beating Fozzy Stacks’ Castle Star and Donnacha O’Brien’s Masseto 1¼l and the same.

The Group 3 Arm International Stakes provided the closest finish of the first day of the festival and was won by Jessica Harrington’s Cadillac ridden by Shane Foley from Joseph O’Brien’s Dawn Patrol with Shane Crosse and Willie Mullins’ True Self and Billy Lee and Ger Lyons’ Thunder Kiss and Colin Keane by a shorthead, a neck and the same.

The opening race on Sunday Barronstown Stud Irish EBF Maiden provided an

by Ger Lyons and ridden by Colin Keane, just held on in a blanket finish with distances of short-head, nose, and two heads separating the first five home. Point Gellibrand just failed to get up under Shane Crosse for Joseph O’Brien with his father Aidan and Ryan Moore third with Shark Bay. Johnny Murtagh’s was fourth under Ben Coen and Jim Bolger’s fifth under son-in-law Kevin Manning. The unlucky horse was the runner-up who had to find his way through the wall of horses.

The Group 2 Airlie Stud Stakes for 2-Y-O filles was won by Joseph O’Brien’s Velocidad ridden by Declan McDonagh by 2¼l and 1¾l from his father’s, Yet, and Fozzy Stack’s Cheerupsleepyjean.

The feature Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes provided a similar result as O’Brien Jnr. again beat O’Brien Snr. as the Shane Crosse ridden Thundering Nights beat Santa Barbera and Ryan Moore. Jessica Harrington’s Cayenne Pepper, the favourite, finished third.

On Tuesday in Lenebane, Noel Meade’s Lincoln winner Layfayette stayed on well to beat Aidan O’Brien’s Hector De Maris and Dermot Weld’s Haparanda in the jewel of the Roscommon flat races, The Lenebane Listed Stakes. The winner ridden by Chris Hayes had 1 ¼ l and a neck to spare at the line.

Champion jockey Colin Keane enjoyed a treble on Tuesday in Lenebane, winning the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF for Ger Lyons on Once Upon A River at 4/5 from the Sean Mulryan owned, Joseph O’Brien trained, Canter’s Well and Ballydoyle’s Minister Of War in third. The winning distances were 4l and 4½l. He followed up on La Joconde for Aidan O’Brien in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden beating Karatayka and Ubuntu by 1¼l and 1¾l. The treble was completed in the final race on Dermot Weld’s Florence Camille who finished a head and 4¾l ahead of Ballinlough Gale and Patience.

It was a case of ‘third time lucky’ for Seamie Heffernan, who rode Willow to win the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Oaks Trial at Naas last Wednesday. Heffernan was declared to ride High Heels, withdrawn off feed, he was then on La Joconde, withdrawn due to change in going and finally got up on Willow. All three are trained in Ballydoyle.

The race was 24 minutes late in starting due to an injury to jockey Gary Carroll when his mount Holly Golightly reared and threw him at the start.

This week former owner, trainer and gambler Noel Furlong passed away at the age of 83. He is best remembered for his gambles on his own horses The Illiad and Destriero. Having pulled off a huge gamble in the Ladbroke Hurdle in Leopardstown with the Illiad he reinvested his winnings on the first day of Cheltenham 1991 backing both horses to win. Both trained by Andy Geraghty and ridden by Pat McWilliams, Destriero won the opening Supreme Novices Hurdle and reputedly took £1 million out of the ring. The Illiad, who would have cost the bookmakers millions in singles and doubles if he won, trailed in last of the 21 finishers. Noel Furlong, an excellent poker player, won the main event at the 1999 World Series Of Poker and the Irish Poker Open twice. May he rest in peace.

Cam/Dysart comeback heroics!

Cam/Dysart U-18s staged a remarkable last comeback to clinch the RDYFL Division One title recently.

Trailing 3-0 to Ballinagare Manor with just 18 minutes left last Saturday evening, the combined side struck back with goals from Oisin Canny, Mikey Lohan and Adam Cummins to take the match to extra-time. Ronan Doyle completed the comeback in extra-time to clinch Cam/Dysart’s first ever underage title.

Athlone Liam Egan won the Wednesday Open on June 23rd with 38 points while Benny Kilroy topped the Singles Stableford leaderboard last weekend with 42.

Lily and Lizzie O’Sullivan won the recent Australian Spoons Foursomes competition with 42 points.

Congratulations to the Athlone team which beat Roscommon in the first round of the Women’s Challenge Cup. The team is as follows: Kathleen McDonnell, Imelda Sheeran, Annmarie Hynes, Margaret Geoghegan, and Sylvia McEnerney. Team captains are Mary McHale and Wendy Kearon.

The women’s Minor Cup team which beat Mountbellew in round two: Lizzie O’Sullivan, Frances McGettigan, Sheila Geraghty, Anna Walsh, and Brid Kenny. Team captains are Noirin O’Rourke and Anne Evans.

Yvonne Walsh Alacoque O’Connor finished third and fourth overall respectively in the Connacht Senior and Junior Ladies Championships recently. Catherine Mannion took the top gross score on the day.

Castlerea The recent Harmac Medical competition was won by Michael McGovern with 43 points while Mary Gunning took the ladies’ prize with 40.

Castlerea will host the Connacht U-18 boys Interclub competition this week and the course committee have been busy preparing for their arrival.

Castlerea Golf Club extends deepest sympathies to Liam, Olivia, David, John and Isla Walsh and the extended Hawkshaw family on the death of Breda, mother of Liam Walsh, who passed away recently.

Breda was a former Lady Captain, who loved her game of golf and took great pride in the golf club. She was a very astute and elegant business lady, and owned a bookmakers in Castlerea.

As a mark of respect, mem-

bers of Castlerea Golf Club formed a guard of honour outside St. Patrick’s Church and accompanied Breda’s remains to her final resting place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Condolences are also extended to Daryle and Mervin Kelly on the death of their father Tommy, who passed away recently.

Paddy McLoughlin’s Seniors team came extremely close to making it three out of three for Boyle against Rosses Point, but the ‘sudden death’ finish went against Boyle this time around.

Carrick Stephen Sheeran won the gents’ competition on Saturday, June 5th with 41 points and the competition on Sunday, June 6th went to Jamie Mulligan with 48.

Sean Martin topped the leaderboard in the Lynch Cup Qualifier recently with 41 points while the Divinos GOY competition went the way of Keith Duggan with 62 nett.

The Cryan’s Hotel competition was won by Darren Conlon with 48 points and the Ladies’ Monster Open was claimed by Terri Gray (42 points) with the men’s prize going to Ben Guckian (43).

Hurlers beaten in Christy Ring opener Christy Ring Cup Round One Wicklow 2-18 Roscommon 1-11 Last Sunday in Aughrim, Roscommon hurlers produced arguably their best performance of what has been a miserable year, but it still wasn’t enough to prevent Wicklow from ending the match ten points to the good. Roscommon had reduced the margin to just four points midway through the second half (1-13 to 1-9), but despite being down to thirteen men, the home side weathered the storm and ran out convincing winners in the end.

In the 51st minute, when Cathal Dolan was pole-axed on his way towards the Wicklow goal, referee Thomas Gleeson sent Bryan Kearney to the sin bin and issued a straight red card to Gary Byrne after an incident that followed the tackle.

Cillian Egan sent the resultant penalty to the Wicklow net. But Johnny Keane’s men couldn’t make the numerical advantage pay, and it was Wicklow who

finished the stronger team.

Despite some good play from Peter Kellehan, Cathal Dolan and Conall Kennelly, it was Wicklow who dominated the first half exchanges, with the strong wind at the backs. A well-worked goal from Gary Hughes helped the home side into a 1-9 to 0-4 half-time lead, with Cathal Dolan (3) and Cillian Egan the Roscommon point scorers.

Roscommon held their own in the third quarter, until that Egan penalty brought them back into the match. But instead of taking the initiative, it was the home side who battened down the hatches, and ‘man of the match’ Mikey Lee sealed their victory with a goal in injury-time.

Now, Roscommon will have to beat Derry at home this Saturday if they want to extend their season. Shane Naughton, Cillian Egan, Cathal Dolan, and Conall Kennelly were Roscommon’s best players but it was another disappointing day all told.

Underage GAA Round-Up

The Oran/St. Croan’s combination proved too strong for Roscommon Gaels when they won the Division One U-14 football final in Strokestown. Ryan Hanley scored four points for the winners in a man of the match display, while Eoin Morgan scored both goals for the amalgamation, who led by 1-7 to 0-4 at the break.

A Gaels’ goal from Jack Raftery gave them hope but Oran/Croan’s, who were jointly captained by Eoghan Murray and Ryan Hanley, had done enough to take the title.

In the Division Three final, Castlerea St. Kevin’s defeated St. Brigid’s by 5-15 to 6-8. John Curran scored 3-1 for the winners.

Clann find that bit extra to see off neighbours Roscommon JFC ‘A’ 2020 Final Clann na nGael 1-14 St. Brigid’s 1-13

After waiting nine months to play this final, these two great rivals served up a nail-biting encounter at Dr. Hyde Park last Friday night that could have gone either way. In the end it was Clann who prevailed after no less than four periods of extra-time.

The small crowd of 200 who were allowed to attend were treated to a roller-coaster game that took almost three hours to reach a conclusion. Referee Pat Casey threw the ball in at 7 pm and it was almost 9.45 pm before there was an outcome.

In another very interesting twist, the Clann manager Niall Shine was married the following day to bride Hayley, who is a big St. Brigid’s supporter!

Played on a dry but cold night, there was never much between the teams. Clann were marginally the better side in the opening half and with veteran Johnny Dunning and Sea Henry playing well, they led by 1-4 to 0-5 at the break, their goal coming in the sixth minute from Killian Bannon following good work from Callum O’Brien and Henry.

But Ciaran O’Reilly, John Cunningham and Eoghan Derwin did well for Brigid’s and it was nip and tuck all the way through the second half.

The football was not of the highest standard but there were some great scores kicked on both sides and the outcome was in doubt to the very end. Sea Henry edged Clann a point ahead in the 55th minute but two minutes later Gavin Byrne levelled the scores

and the sides were deadlocked: St. Brigid’s 0-12 Clann 1-9.

In the first period of extra-time, Brigid’s looked to have finally done enough to take the trophy.

Oisin O’Reilly pointed a free and then Gavin Byrne scored a fortuitous goal despite the efforts of Darragh Egan on the Clann goal line. At that stage there were four points in it at 1-13 to 1-9. But a point from Killian Bannon reduced the gap to three and in the second period Clann took over.

Callum O’Brien pointed two frees and captain Oliver Harney sallied forward to score a super point and the sides were level again at 1-13 apiece.

It was decided that two further periods of five minutes would be played before the requirement to go to penalty kicks and we saw just one further score, a well-taken point from Killian Bannon, a minute into the fourth period of extra-time that turned out to be the match winner.

As the teams got tired tempers

frayed, and in the final few minutes and referee Casey booked a number of players. He sent off Brigid’s goalkeeper Cormac Sheehy on a straight red and sub Ciaran Quinn who got a black to add to an earlier yellow. It was a pity for the players involved as both sides had put so much into trying to win the title and it was never that type of game.

So it was Clann who edged through in the end and they were certainly the more economical side in front of goal but Brigid’s will point to the fact that during the course of the game they missed at least four clear goal chances and those misses proved costly in the end.

If the rest of the club fare in 2021 offers half as much excitement and drama as we saw in Hyde Park last weekend then everyone will be very happy indeed.

One of the interesting subplots to last Friday’s Junior final was that Clann na nGael manager, Niall Shine, was married the very next day to a St. Brigid’s woman!

“Hayley Irwin is the girl I’m getting married to. She’s a big Brigid’s supporter so she won’t take this too well (laughs),” he told People Sport last Friday.

“Look, we knew that this would be tight but we didn’t think it would go to a second

round of extra-time. We have a nice blend of youth and experience and we did very well.

We knew we had a strong panel of 34 players and we knew that we would need subs and they all did well tonight.

“We have been training for this for the past two months in Johnstown two or three nights a week and we are so delighted to have won and now we go up to Intermediate football which is great.

“They missed some chances but then again so did we. I thought when they went four

points up we were in trouble but in fairness to our lads they dug in and were patient and we knew that the likes of Callum O’Brien, Johnny Dunning, and Sea Henry would do it for us on the scoreboard.

It was easy to motivate the players for a county final and we are just delighted to have won it.

“The aim when I took over was to make progress in the league and get a few good games behind us. Our focus now is to get into the O’Gara Cup semi-finals,” he said.
