Since its inception, the football programme at Rossall has established itself as a uniquely powerful force in the world of independent school sports. This exclusive collaboration between Rossall and Manchester City Football Club (Premier League, European and World Champions) has arisen from our common goal of ensuring that young people have access to a world class education whilst continuing their development as athletes.
Our programme is ideally suited for students who are looking to blend the best of British academic excellence with world-class football coaching and opportunities. The Elite Football Programme is quite unlike any other on offer in the UK. Students benefit from unparalleled football development, guided by Manchester City’s UEFA qualified coaches in a holistic environment that dovetails seamlessly with academic learning. To date, the achievements of our young footballers have been truly outstanding. Numerous professional contracts have been signed and a significant number of students have won 100% scholarships to the United States which is enabling them to pursue their sporting dreams at top universities. Others have progressed to the very finest universities within the UK and overseas. The programme provides pupils with the opportunity to study at a leading independent school within the UK whilst being immersed in the world of a Premier League football team and club.

Both boys and girls in Years 7 to Year 13 (11 to 19 years of age) are eligible for acceptance into the programme. Pupil participation in the programme is a minimum of one year. However, we do encourage membership to be for no fewer than two years, so that pupils have the opportunity to complete a formal academic qualification. Rossall School offers courses in English as an Additional Language, (I)GCSE, A Levels, the International Baccalaureate Diploma, and BTEC Sport Level 3 (Double and Triple). Consequently, we are able to put together personalised programmes of study suited to meet the needs of the individual.
Rossall embraces a progressive approach to education, emphasising not only academic excellence but also character building, critical thinking and soft skills. Students who enrol on the football programme benefit from the opportunity of studying a diverse range of subjects and engaging with cocurricular activities that provide opportunities for leadership and community engagement. This enables them to be able to develop into well rounded individuals capable of thriving in an ever-evolving world. Whether you have already played in an academy and have aspirations to play professionally, or you simply wish to develop your footballing ability, the programme is designed to develop players so that they can fulfil their potential. With no less than thirteen teams across all age groups and genders, there are plenty of opportunities to progress at various levels within the sport.

Pupils will follow an academy-style programme constructed and delivered by Manchester City for a full school year with their time divided between Rossall School, training at the Mill Farm Sports Complex, competitive fixtures and the opportunity to visit the Manchester City Etihad training campus.

Individual development will be regularly monitored and discussed between parents and coaches. Individual learning programmes and weekly player evaluations are in place to ensure training is tailored to every player’s needs, and targets are set and reviewed regularly.

Rossall utilises cutting edge strength and conditioning research and sport science techniques to help maximise youth athlete performance. The school takes a holistic approach to these areas, incorporating physical literacy or resistant training skills competency and athletic motor skills competencies (AMSC). Furthermore, the strength and conditioning programme is delivered with reference to factors such as maturation levels of peak height velocity (PHV) and in ensuring programmes are tailored for age, gender and physiological differences. Multiple strength and conditioning plans are created throughout the year, along with regular workload and intensity monitoring.

All sessions are delivered by Manchester City coaches, using the City Play model and following the same ‘Beautiful Football’ philosophy and methodology used consistently across all areas of the Club to develop players.

Rossall graduates of the Elite Football Programme are presented with a diverse array of potential pathways, each offering opportunities for personal and professional growth. While the dream of becoming a professional footballer is a driving force for many, it’s important to recognise that the path to success in this field can be challenging, and the reality is that only a small percentage will reach the very highest levels of sport.
However, through the comprehensive training and support provided by the programme, our students are equipped with the skills, knowledge and experience to pursue various avenues in football and beyond. For those with aspirations of playing professionally, the programme offers national level competition, outstanding coaching and exposure to professional scouting networks for students to showcase their talent.
Additionally, for students considering higher education, the possibility of securing scholarships to prestigious US colleges and overseas universities is a well established path for recent graduates. Equally, many of our graduates choose to pursue a wide range of football-related careers including coaching, sports management and physiotherapy at top UK universities, such as Loughborough, Durham, Bath or Exeter.
