Summer has finally arrived here in New Brunswick, my favorite time of year.

I love the long, lazy dog days of summer and all the fun they bring. For me, the highlight is waterwork with the dogs. It's the perfect time to grab the bumpers, float line, and buoys, and head down to the beach.

As I mentioned earlier, we have a record number of approved water trials this year. You can find all the details on our website at www.pwdcc.org, including information on the Ontario water camps. A big thank you to everyone involved in organizing these events.

Beyond waterwork, our dedicated and hardworking National Specialty committee has been busy coordinating the logistics for our Specialty — a significant undertaking! While we couldn’t organize a water trial in conjunction with the show this year, there are still plenty of opportunities to participate in a scent trial, rally, obedience, and, of course, conformation.

After our Board of Directors meeting in June, we will be taking a break in July and August, with plans to reconvene on Zoom in September. However, we will remain available during the break to address any urgent issues.

Important Reminder: The PWDCC Annual General Meeting will be held on October 29th at 7:30 PM EST. Please mark your calendars. Reports will be circulated to all members in September.

I hope you have some fun summer plans and can take a break from your busy schedules to enjoy time with family, friends, and your dogs. In August my dogs and I will be taking a road trip to Ontario to compete in the trials and I'm looking forward to reconnecting with friends who share my passion for waterwork. I'm also excited to spend time with three of our Board members who will also be involved in the trials.

Whatever your plans may be, I wish you a most enjoyable season, whether you're in or out of the water. I hope to see many of you on October 29th!

PUPOGRAPHY S PECIAL S KILLS : Looking just so adorable, sleeping on my back. I hear I inherited this from my dad, Taylor.

B IGGEST C ATASTROPHE : Nothing too dramatic, I hear I’m managed so I don’t get into trouble.

BATHING AND G ROOMING T OLERANCE : I’m pretty good for my baths, and brushing, trimming is tolerable, and if I’m distracted I hear I’m a good boy for nail trims. But standing on the table is just a bore.

FAVOURITE D ESTINATION : The country house is the best, our yard is really big with lots of different stuff to explore.

T OYS OF C HOICE : Any fuzzy toy that Brisa and I can play tug with and, of course, bullies.

M OST A SHAMED OF : Getting Roslyn up at 3:30am as I was hurling in my crate. And a few errant pees on the rug.

M OST P ROUD OF : Learning to be a good boy, sleeping in my crate, travelling quietly in the car, all the stuff a pup has to learn to live in polite society. AND LEARNING HOW TO SWIM! NAME : Seabury Vulcan Good Vibrations, “Brian Wilson”.

N ICKNAMES : The Baby, Brian, the first name only is just not right, I’m getting bigger, and please use my FULL name! In the litter I was known as mini Tay Tay, for obvious reasons, as I most resembled my dad, Taylor, who is known as Tay, or Tater Tots or just Tots.

DATE OF B IRTH : April 29, 2024.

W HAT I WOULD L IKE TO BE W HEN I G ROW U P : I want to be show boy like my mom and dad. Dad had a big career in the U.S., don’t know if I’ll do that as everyone is talking about the new border rules. (What’s a border?) And do Rally and Scent like them too, they tell me it’s lots of fun.

Brian Wilson lives in Toronto and Grafton Ontario with the Seabury pack, Roslyn Eskind and Leo Hui, his breeders/owners.

L EADER OF MY PACK : Mr. Franklin, who I address as Sir, even if he’s my grandpa. I try to be a good boy and not bug him too much, but those ears are so tempting.

E DUCATION : Well so far it’s been Puppy Culture and now I’m getting into the basics, sit, down, come, off and starting roll over. Apparently, leash walking is coming soon.

L EISURE T IME ACTIVITIES : Hanging with my cousin Brisa, she’s lots of fun to play with, we chew on those yummy crocs, zoom in the yard and pull on the dog beds.

P ET P EEVE : Waiting for my dinners, why is the service so slow?!

FAVOURITE N ON - CONSUMABLE : Grass is the latest, it somehow comes back out. Recently discovered the planter pots, not well received! I got yelled at.

Michelle Hammerschmidt tries new activities Hunt Retrieves and Tracking.

While most HRC members own retrieving breeds, participation in events is open to all UKC Gun Dog breeds. There are five ability-based (not age) categories that the dogs may enter in the HRC Tests: Started, Seasoned, Finished, Grand and Upland.

Unlike field trials, these are not competitive 1st, 2nd and 3rd place events, but tests where all dogs are judged pass/fail against a “Hunting Standard”. The HRC hunt test consists of four retrieves. Two in the field and two in water. Dogs must successfully mark and retrieve a falling bird at 75 yards.

Nokk takes to hunt retrieves as the versatile PWD she is.

So proud of these girls.

Crux UTDX Urban Tracking Dog Excellent A fun track, one I’ll never forget!, lots of wind brings some fringing dogs. Crux followed the flow across the road and insisted about 4 times we are to cross.

Finally found the track corner and followed to make couple beautiful hard surface turns. Down to her last leg which now I insisted to her it doesn’t go there!

She sure showed me!

Nokk goes back to back with her TD Tracking Dog pass on Nov 5th, now a UTD Urban Tracking Dog.

PWDCC Board Meeting Minutes Tuesday, March 12, 2024 – 7:30 pm EDT Approved April 22, 2024 1. Call to Order President Catherine Gadd called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm EDT. 2. Roll Call Present Jennifer Byers, Lorie Crouch, Tan Crombie, Michelle Hammerschmidt, Catherine Gadd, Denyse Martin, Mindy Selby (Past President-joined at 8:02 pm), Roy Vokes Regrets Diane Dirsus Guest Karen Matthews 3. Approval of Agenda (20240312-9) A motion to approve the agenda was moved by Roy and seconded by Jennifer.

The agenda was approved.

4. Approval of Last Meeting’s Minutes A motion to approve the minutes of the February 11, 2024 Board meeting was moved by Lorie and seconded by Roy. The minutes were approved. Tan will share with Roslyn for the Waterlog.

5. Report of the Treasurer With the Treasurer absent, the February report will be reviewed following the meeting.

6. Report of the Secretary Tan confirmed information on changes to the Board of Directors was provided to the CKC. She provided updates on blast emails and communications to members since the last meeting.

7. Report of the President Catherine shared information about the PWDCA Zoom meeting to review changes to the 2024 Water Trial Manual. Both Catherine and Lorie, along with other PWDCC members, joined the meeting.

The Board discussed whether to host a PWDCC Zoom meeting to update members on the changes. It was noted that many other clubs were hosting similar sessions, particularly to highlight changes to the Junior and Apprentice levels.

The Board agreed to look for a date in April to host a Zoom meeting for all PWDCC members to update on the changes and answer questions.

Canadian National Speciality Updates (Mindy) Mindy updated the Board on arrangements for the National Specialty being held August 1-4, 2042. The location was moved to Okotoks AB due to the high cost of the original venue. With a limited number of hotels in the immediate vicinity, a host hotel is not being arranged. Hospitality will be available at the venue itself. The call for volunteers has been sent with some interest to date. Final venues, scheduling and performance events that will comprise the Versatility Award program are being confirmed. Mindy will provide a budget for the speciality at a future meeting.

Mindy left the meeting at 8:20 pm.

The results of the members’ survey conducted in April 2021 were reviewed. The results, including an appetite for events focused on pet families, will be used in future correspondence to members. PWDCC members will also be invited to share suggestions for article topics in the Waterlog newsletter.

10. New Business The Board reviewed the Ontario proposed water trial budget. Catherine and Diane responded to questions. A motion to accept the budget as presented was moved by Lorie and seconded by Denyse. The motion was approved.

Michelle and Catherine responded to questions. A motion to accept the budget as presented was moved by Roy and seconded by Denyse. The motion was approved.

With these approvals, Catherine noted there will be a total of 7 water trials in Canada in 2024: three in Ontario, two in Alberta and two in BC. A question was raised about the Breeder’s List program and will be addressed at a future meeting.

She outlined the evaluation process being undertaken and next steps for rehoming the dog. Michelle confirmed she would be able to care for the dog for a few weeks as an interim solution if needed.

Water Trial Catherine advised the budgets for the Ontario and Western (BC) water trials would be reviewed at this meeting and the Alberta Portuguese Water Dog Club water trial budget had already been approved by their membership. An advertisement for all 2024 Water Trials will be placed in the Courier and Waterlog. Lorie noted the need to review the dates of the water trials in the upcoming Waterlog.

Report of the President Catherine shared a request from a member that the PWDCC consider allowing the AIS PennHip as an alternative test to OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) when evaluating hips to estimate the risk of osteoarthritis (OA) of canine hip dysplasia in PWDs. Following discussion, the Board agreed that while nothing is stopping breeders from using the PennHip test, the PWDCC would continue to support the OFA test as the recommended health test for breeding dogs.

Diane shared an overview of the March 2024 Treasurer’s Report noting an increase in membership numbers and expenses paid related to the recent rescue.

A discussion ensued around the term of a puppy membership and the Board agreed that while a puppy membership is normally for a calendar year, some leeway would be given for PWDCC puppy members who join later in the year being extended into the following year.

8. Committee Reports Rescue Jennifer confirmed that Trooper, the recent addition to the rescue program in BC, is now in a great home and thriving. The Board thanks everyone involved in this successful outcome. Lorie noted that an Ontario representative for the PWDCC Rescue program is still needed.

Complaints no report Breeder no report. The Board will discuss the PWDCC Member Breeders List at the May meeting.

Water Trial Catherine reported the April 7, 2024 Zoom call to discuss the 2024 PWDCC Water Trial Manual changes had 32 individuals registered with 26 in attendance. It lasted about an hour with good questions, training tips and positive feedback. The Board brainstormed ideas for other Zoom events for the membership.

National Specialty Denyse updated the Board that the scent trial is now CKCapproved and will be part of the speciality performance events. The proposed budget will come to a future meeting as plans are finalized.

4. Approval of Last Meeting’s Minutes A motion to approve the minutes of the April 22, 2024 Board meeting was moved by Roy and seconded by Diane. The minutes were approved. Tan will share with Roslyn for the Waterlog.

5. Business Arising TIMED ITEM (7:35 pm) National Specialty Budget, Website & Updates (20240514-27) Roslyn and Mindy presented the budget for the PWDCC National Speciality in Okotoks, Alberta in August. They highlighted the increased costs of required items and cost-savings in areas with greater flexibility. A discussion around opportunities for sponsorships and sourcing local suppliers for prizes ensued. A motion to accept the budget as presented was moved by Diane and seconded by Roy. The motion was approved.

Roslyn confirmed the National Speciality website and brochure are prepared and ready to go live. Catherine has shared her President’s message for the brochure.

The Board discussed the Versatility Awards Program point system. Points for the CKC Scent Detection area of competition will be updated to reflect a pass/fail result.

PWDCC Member Breeders List Roslyn and Deirdre spoke to the intent of the PWDCC Member Breeders List and requirements for inclusion. A discussion followed on why breeders may or may not join the list, what other national breed clubs use and previous initiatives to gather feedback from PWD breeder members.

Roslyn and Deirdre left the meeting at 8:25 pm EDT.

Membership Lorie raised a question about accessing the list of members through the website membership portal. Additional information will be gathered from the webmaster around accessibility, security and privacy.

The review of the PWDCC Committees including membership and board liaison was deferred to the June meeting.

10. New Business Tan raised a question about the process for proofreading draft issues of the Waterlog. Some errors in event information (dates, locations) had been noted by Board members and readers. The process will be confirmed with the Waterlog Editor.
