It is with heartfelt appreciation that we share with you our Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2025 (July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025), detailing all that your support helped make possible for the more than 13,000 women who turned to Rosie’s Place. As you will see in these pages, in the past year, we have seen growth across all of our programs. Our reach has expanded, and our impact has grown. We are now helping more women in more meaningful ways than ever before. Because right now, our community needs us more. And over our 51-year history, when more has been needed from us—thanks to friends like you—we have always, always found ways to do more. Rising food insecurity in our community meant thousands more meals served in our Dining Room. Higher rents and skyrocketing costs of living drove a 32% increase in our eviction prevention work, keeping hundreds more women and their families safe in their homes. Through our intensive efforts to form partnerships with low-barrier programs, and our intentional relationship work with our guests—we have moved more women into transitional and long-term housing than we did last year. No one should have to spend a day worried and wondering where they will sleep at night. Last year, our Advocates answered more than 35,500 calls for our help, both in person and over the phone—a 17% increase from the year prior. The prescient decision our founder, Kip Tiernan, made to never accept government funding has protected our community, while our five-year strategic plan has positioned us to meet this moment. In response to the increased needs of our guests resulting from the current economic landscape, we have prioritized the growth of our emergency support services and accelerated the expansion of our Workforce Development program. We will give our guests more help with critical day-to-day needs and more opportunities for precious stability. So that, once again in a time of uncertainty, Rosie’s Place will come through for women who live in uncertainty every day. Our guests face challenges and circumstances most would find unbearable. And yet they find ways to move forward. And so, in turn, together, so must we. We remain devoted to removing barriers and replacing them with steppingstones; to countering division with community and to meeting need with more—more help, more compassion and more love. More Sanctuary... Boston has the second highest rate of homelessness in U.S. major cities. In 2024 the rate of homelessness rose by 50%, and the rate of families with children who are homeless rose by 74%.* A statewide study in 2025 found that “nearly 2 million adults” and one in three Massachusetts families don’t have enough to eat, while 24% of families have “very low” food security—the most severe form, when an individual must skip meals or not eat for the entire day. **

Because of Rosie’s Place, more women are in safe and supportive day and overnight shelter. More women are able to engage in self-care and maintain their dignity. More women and their families are eating healthy food, and fewer women are going without meals and nourishment. More women are healthier.
This year… In our Day Shelter, homeless guests found critical relief and accessed 3,895 showers and 1,312 laundry appointments—both increasing by over 40%. Guests also accessed 5,700 phone and computer sessions and received more than 4,300 hygiene kits.
Responding to the continued rise in food insecurity, our Dining Room served 187,000 nourishing, well-balanced meals—a 23% increase over the prior year—averaging more than 500 meals daily. Open 365 days a year, in our Dining Room, guests find more than nourishment, they find community and connection.
In our new Behavioral Health Program, 130 guests participated in counseling and support groups—developing skills for emotional regulation, self-awareness and maintaining positive relationships.
More than 8,800 women—8% more women than the year before—made a total of 78,000 visits to our Food Pantry, receiving healthy groceries and fresh produce. The Food Pantry serves an average of 323 women and their families every day.
152 women experienced much-needed respite for up to 28 days in our supportive Overnight Shelter. Our Shelter is open 365 days a year and provides warm, safe beds for 20 women at a time. A total of 29 guests moved into permanent or transitional housing following their work with us.
Guests accessed basic health care services in our Wellness Center in 1,300 visits through partnerships with Boston Healthcare for the Homeless and Regis College of Nursing.
Our Recovery Navigator ongoingly worked with 41 guests pursuing sobriety and healing from substance use disorders. 3
More Support... Boston is one of the most expensive cities in the U.S., with rents being the second highest in the nation. The cost of living continues to climb, and yet for many families, their income hasn’t kept up, resulting in food insecurity and significant barriers to health, housing, education and employment. *
Because of Rosie’s Place, more women have increased stability in their lives. More women are avoiding homelessness and staying housed. More women are supported in their access to the justice system.
This year… Our Housing Stabilization Program prevented the upheaval of eviction by supporting 70 newly housed women and women at risk of eviction through regular home visits and consistent contact with property owners and management companies, keeping 100% of the guests served through this program healthy and housed. Our team assisted with such services as funding for back rent and utilities, furniture, referrals to behavioral health programs and housing court assistance.
More than 6,000 women received assistance with urgent concerns like shelter access, rent and utility arrearages, housing searches and transportation. Our multilingual Advocates held over 35,500 meetings and calls—an increase of 17% over FY24—ensuring no woman faced crisis alone.
We helped 2,664 guests remain housed and avoid eviction—32% more guests than in the year prior—through the work of our Advocacy and Legal Programs. Our rent and arrearage assistance, and legal support, meant the difference between housing and homelessness, security and chaos, for these vulnerable households.
Our Legal Program supported more than 1,200 guests—14% more than last year—through services related to immigration, housing, family law, employment, CORI sealing and more. This work is enhanced through partnerships with pro bono attorneys, who help our guests access justice. 4

More Opportunity... Many immigrants in Massachusetts with bachelor’s degrees are underemployed—working in jobs that do not fully use their skills—because of limited English proficiency. The underemployment rate for this group is 50%, more than twice that of immigrants with strong English skills. *
Because of Rosie’s Place, more women are working toward financial stability. More women, many of whom are immigrants, are learning English and have improved literacy, language and computer skills. More women are preparing for the workplace through job training programs. More women are finding jobs. More women are learning to advocate for themselves. More women are civically engaged.
This year… More than 430 guests accessed employment support—a 42% increase, compared to the previous year—through a total of 878 one-on-one meetings with our Workforce Development Advocate. We saw a 200% increase in women accessing job training programs with 78 women participating, and 27 women were placed in jobs. For these women, this access to critical resources was a steppingstone to stability.
Over 340 women improved their reading, writing, and English language skills in our Women’s Education Center, which held 658 class sessions this year. An average of 10 students joined each class. Our Writing Cafe culminated in a published collection of student writing.
We engaged guests in civic action through monthly Public Policy Council meetings. By supporting guests in preparing and submitting testimony to state legislators, covering topics such as the Mass. Rental Voucher Program, rent stabilization, the Affordable Homes Act and the state budget, their voices were heard.

Rosie’s Place relies solely on the support of individuals, foundations and corporations and does not accept city, state or federal government funding. In fiscal year 2025, $18,118,463 was raised. Founded by Kip Tiernan in 1974, Rosie’s Place is the first emergency shelter for women in the United States. Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment to help poor and homeless women to maintain their dignity, seek opportunity and find security in their lives. “Never forget that charity is scraps from the table and justice is a seat at the table.
